DARTFORD LIVING MAGAZINE
PRINTED BY:
Dear Dartford Living Readers,
Welcome to our special 200th edition magazine - we hope you like it!
We continue to live in challenging times, but as usual the magazine is jam-packed with lots of local information and local businesses. Please support as many as you can - use them or lose them! Like never before, your community needs you.
In case you weren’t aware, we run Dartford Living alongside volunteer members of the local community for the local community. It’s the only independently run magazine serving the local area with information, fun, good news and positive local stories!
Please get in touch if you would like to write an article for the magazine. If writing is not for you, then perhaps you could volunteer to deliver 100 or so magazines to your neighbours. You will guarantee your copy of the magazine and get a little exercise as well!
If you email editor@dartfordliving.com we will add you to our e-newsletter mailing list and you will join over 50,000 local people who read the magazine and/or follow us on social media each month.
Take care, Vijay

DARTFORD LIVING TURNS 200
It's fantastic to reach 200 magazines. We'd like to thank our readers, volunteers and advertisers. Without all of you this magazine is nothing!
There are a lot of positives for living in Dartford and Dartford Living magazine is definitely one of them, it’s a great source of community information.
Full of local businesses, interesting articles and competitions, it’s like the whole of Dartford in a magazine, I enjoy my monthly read.

Congratulations on another incredible milestone!
It’s a reflection of the hard work and huge commitment that Vijay’s team has, to all the individuals and businesses within the Dartford community and to the quality of this excellent magazine.

One of the strengths of Dartford Living is that unlike some publications it was born here in the town. It’s a Dartfordian. Being run and distributed by local people means it has that authentic community feel and it’s obvious from every page that it has the local interest at heart. Time and again, I run in to people who tell me they found out about some event or news from Dartford Living and it’s clear that people trust it. That’s not something that happens overnight.
Dartford Living has been with the town through thick and thin. Communities can sometimes be complicated but Dartford Living manages to inform and entertain with a huge dose of kindness and optimism. It’s not looking to create controversy or push an agenda and I think people love it because it’s reliable and friendly. It’s obvious that it’s created by people who aren’t from outside looking in but who are part of the community themselves.
I know that advertisers find it useful because it gets right to the heart of what small towns are about - supporting local businesses and getting good service from people who care. I’m not sure all readers appreciated how much Vijay, Dave and the team do for Dartford beyond the monthly magazine but they are hugely important to the community. They embraced digital - a big step for an independent community magazine - which was crucial in getting information to people during the pandemic and the Dartford Living live events help small businesses grow and network. They sponsor things, organise things and promote things. Dartford is very lucky to have them.
Jeremy Kite MBE Dartford Borough Council Leader
Many congratulations on the upcoming celebration of the magazine. So happy to be a part of such a successful and much needed community resource.

Having been retired for a few years and having free time during the evening, I decided to join Dartford Living Community Group as a Moderator. It's a great group and Dartford Living Magazine also gives news and community information. The magazine and the group were very welcome during Covid and the lockdown periods. It's good that it isn't a run of the mill selling site. Congratulations to Vijay and David on the 200th edition.

Congratulations to all at Dartford Living. Such a wonderful, local magazine, by local people. We have enjoyed working with them for many years now and it really isn’t just advertising, it is about being part of the community, which they are very passionate about.
Dartford is a thriving community to live in, and Dartford Living magazine reflects that in it's great content every month, showcasing what's going on locally and celebrating our town. Their Facebook group is also a go to for lively discussions and info on current events!
I personally appreciate being able to share things like campaigns and litter picks I am running, eco events such as the recent tree planting and was delighted to have had such great support for The Dartford Hedgehog Project, which is striving to help these vulnerable creatures flourish locally.
I know how hard the Vijay and Dave work to put the magazine together every month and wanted to say a massive thank for all they do in keeping local people informed and creating a great online community.

DARTFORD AVIATION CLUB
Dartford Aviation Club is an open group in Kent open to anyone interested in becoming a pilot regardless of age. They plan to register as a charity in the coming months.
Their intention is to arm members with strategies and resources for free to achieve their aviation dreams, despite the enormous cost associated with flight training.
The founder of Dartford Aviation Club is a Commercial pilot. He struggled finding his way as he entered this new world, self-funded his entire training and navigated through financial hassle. His desire is to provide the advice he would have loved to find at the time.
The recurring meet-up they organise will gather professionals in the aviation industry, financial advisors, recruiters etc (all volunteers) to provide free guidance and help plan their
career path to become pilots.
They also create inspirational content, such as their pilot stories series, interviews of student pilots and Airline Pilots, showcasing the variety of pilot backgrounds and journeys (available on YouTube).
Dartford Aviation Club is hosting its first meetup on Saturday 11th March, 11:30AM at the Temple Hill Community Centre, Dartford. This charitable event is meant to breakdown the steps on how to become a pilot, and invite participants to attempt a take off and landing on a simulator. DARTFORD JUNIOR PARKRUN
By Stuart McTeer
If you walk through Dartford’s Central Park at 9AM on a Sunday, you can’t miss the sight of dozens of children smiling and enjoying themselves as they take part in the weekly junior parkrun.
Everyone is welcome at this free and fun event for 4 – 14 year olds to walk, jog or run 2 kilometres around the park. The children can complete the 2-lap course every Sunday while being cheered all the way round by the friendly marshals.
Parents are very welcome to join their child for junior parkrun. There is no time limit and no one finishes last thanks to the role of a volunteer tail walker. Why not get together a group of friends or classmates and come and join us? Just register on the parkrun website www.parkrun.org.uk/register/
The first Dartford junior parkrun took place in May 2016 and since then it has been held more than 260 times with 1200 children having finished. It is one of around 400 junior parkruns that take place across the UK each week.
The event has become a regular Sunday morning fixture for many of those who take part, and regular attenders are awarded a special wristband for completing it 11, 21, 50 and 100 times.
As their confidence increases, some of the children go on to join local athletics clubs or take part in the longer 5k parkrun event held in Central Park every Saturday morning, which is open to anyone aged over 4 years.
Dartford junior parkrun only takes place thanks to a community of enthusiastic volunteers who come together on Sunday mornings to ensure a safe and fun event that can be enjoyed by everyone. However, it is always looking for new people to come along to help and most of the roles are very easy to do.
For more information about taking part or volunteering at Dartford junior parkrun, visit the website at www.parkrun. org.uk/dartford-juniors or take a look at our pages on Facebook or Twitter

THE MILLERS’ TALES: WALK THROUGH HISTORY IN POWDER MILL LANE
By Clair Humphries
The boundary of Dartford / Wilmington / Hawley is fairly unremarkable – as anyone who’s driven down Hawley Road, past its housing estates and industrial units would probably agree. However, did you know that this unassuming part of the borough has been the subject of archaeological excavations, council crisis talks and even explosions? Matters of life and death – literally in some cases – have occurred in the area around Powder Mill Lane, so why not walk through its history and discover more…
Did You Know?
The first recorded mill in this location was in 1086, according to the Doomsday Book.
Clearly, the clue to its history is in the name, Powder Mill Lane. Dartford has a long tradition of industrial milling, thanks mainly to the River Darenth running through it. Records show evidence
of Saxon and Roman settlements all along the river, and it is believed that the waterway would have been used to transport grain. Corn and wheat were other valuable resources, and so the foundations for processing and distributing goods were established along the Darenth Valley route.
Locals will be familiar with the Papermaker’s Arms, further along Hawley Road, now sadly boarded up. The pub’s origins date back to the 19th century but papermaking was central to the area from the 16th century – and had the royal seal of approval no less! German entrepreneur Sir John Spilman founded the first successful paper mill in England on the banks of the Darenth in 1588. Queen Elizabeth first granted him a licence to print white writing paper and the paper mill flourished, employing around 600 local people. Apparently, Queen Elizabeth was so taken with Spilman that she invited him to become her own
18 www.dartfordliving.com
POWDER MILL LANE / RIVER
Can You Spot?
Sir John Spilman’s tomb in Holy Trinity church? In 1858, the Legal Society of Papermakers paid to have it restored, as a testament to his legacy. His mill led to the mass production of paper, which had previously been unavailable to all but the very rich.
However, it was gunpowder rather than paper which made the biggest impact on Powder Mill Lane. In 1732, Dartford’s first gunpowder mill was opened on the site, after one had been established in Faversham. Again, proximity to a river was key and the mill became so successful that by the early 19th century it was one of the largest powder mills in the UK!
It seemed nothing could stop this thriving industry, as demand for gunpowder grew (mainly by the military). At one point, the powder mill site included over a hundred buildings, with much of the local population employed there. Many workers lived on site, including its owners, the Pigou family, who believed their presence reassured others that the mills were safe…
Out With a Bang!
…Which, sadly, wasn’t the case. Minor explosions occurred regularly until 1833, when a huge blast destroyed seven mills and tragically killed seven
mill workers. Homes were razed to the ground and it signalled the decline of gunpowder manufacturing in Dartford. By 1907, works ceased completely and much of it was derelict by the 1920s.
Which may have been the end of the story, if it hadn’t been for exciting new discoveries in the twentieth century. In 1983, as Sterling Homes began developing the site, concerns over conservation were raised – most notably by the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit. They queried the disruption caused by building on the footprint of what had been the North, Central and South mill, along the banks of the River Darenth. Powder Mill Lane was of great historical interest, and to their credit, Sterling Homes (in consultation with Dartford council) re-routed proposed river channels in an effort at conservation. I must reference an excellent book on the subject entitled The Dartford Gunpowder Mills by Brian Philp (Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit) if you’re keen to learn more. Here’s hoping you are – and that, next time you pass the nondescript industrial estates of Hawley Road, you remember its explosive history of paper, powder and people power.

Travel spotlight –LGBTQ+ HolidaysHolidays for a wider community
by Harden Holidays
For most people going on holiday is simply a case of wanting to be as relaxed, carefree, and as open as possible. An LGBTQ+ holiday should be no different. Most holidaymakers take certain things, such as holding hands in public and booking a double room, for granted. That’s not always the case for members of LGBTQ+ community. Being in an LGBTQ+ accepting location is important for peace of mind. Whether you’re off on a romantic same-sex holiday, fancy partying non-stop with your LGBTQ+ friends, or you simply want peace of mind for your LGBTQ+ family, here’s our guide to destinations where everyone is welcomed.
Malta
Frequently voted the most LGBTQ+ friendly place in Europe, Malta is a sunny island in the middle of the Mediterranean. It’s crystal-clear waters and diminutive size make it ideal for LGBTQ+ families, its beautiful buildings and sense of history appeals to romantic same sex city-breakers, while the buzzing nightlife of Paceville welcomes LGBTQ+ party-goers.
Spain
Spain has no end of LGBTQ+ friendly destinations which spring to mind. Pick a Pride! There are so many from which to choose. Barcelona hosts from 19 to 29 June and Gran Canaria has two: 05 to 14 November and 05 to 15 May. The warmest of welcomes continues with the wonderful climate, sun-kissed beaches and dunes, and the vibrant nightlife of both the mainland and the islands.
Portugal
The combination of mountain, ocean and city makes Lisbon holidays immediately likeable. It’s
22 www.dartfordliving.com
an enchantingly attractive city too. It’s also home to the best LGBTQ+ nightlife in Portugal, hosting an annual Pride event and Pride Village with stages, bars, lounges and family areas. During 2023 the city is hoping to host EuroPride, 19 to 28 June, the world’s biggest celebratory LGBTQ+ event in Europe.
Greece
Mykonos has long been a magnet for the LGBTQ+ traveller, so its inclusion here will come as no surprise. Pride may be celebrated from 18 to 25 August, but the picturesque windmills, traditional whitewashed sugar cube houses, beautiful coastline, excellent sandy beaches, first class hotels and great nightlife are available all summer long. Go and relax on one of the world’s most cosmopolitan islands.
The Seychelles
The Seychelles is a burgeoning holiday destination for LGBTQ+ travellers. In recent years these idyllic Indian Ocean islands have made great strides with equality laws, and social attitudes might not be as conservative as you may think. Out and about, discretion is required for all public displays of affection, whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community or not, but you’ll find the hotels and resorts cater for the needs of LGBTQ+ holidaymakers.
South Africa
Cape Town and Johannesburg are home to the country’s largest LGBTQ+ communities, and it’s ahead of some European countries with same-sex marriage being legalised back in 2006. Experience
this fascinating country with our selection of South Africa tours, including private, small-group and self-drives.
The Maldives
Many gay couples travel to the islands each year. We feature properties in the Maldives that ensure they are welcoming to members of the LGBTQ+ community and offer honeymoon benefits to same-sex couples. It may be a matter of making informed decisions before travelling beyond your chosen resort island, but that won’t be a hindrance to enjoying a holiday in this superb island paradise.
Vietnam
Amongst all the Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam is one of the more progressive when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights and has made recent strides in support of the LGBT community. The annual VietPride marches in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City work to raise visibility and awareness of LGBTQ+ issues.
And last, but not least Virgin Voyages with their new adult only cruise offerings. Virgin Voyages take every opportunity to create a positive, welcoming and familiar environment for LGBTQ+ passengers – and it really shows in their hiring practices, entertainment, and the overall experience onboard

THE BODYGUARD MELODY THORNTON INTERVIEW
of aloof and unaware of some of the issues that are going on behind the scenes. When someone starts sending letters and stealing clothes from her home and dressing room, a bodyguard is sent in to protect her.
Rachel is really focused on her son and trying to create the best life for him. She’s a single mother who is extremely high-functioning, so misses all the signs that something is wrong - but her team is also hiding the fact she has a stalker from her! Most people will know you from The Pussycat Dolls, one of the most celebrated girl groups of all time. How does your experience as a world-renowned songstress influence your interpretation of the role of Rachel Marron – are there any parallels? It’s just you doing the best job that you can, and the job of a popstar is a full-time, all-energy position. Everything you do is for that job. So, I can relate to the character in that way. There are also certainly things going on behind the scenes that your team aren’t going to bring up to you. But I would hope someone would have let me know if I had a stalker!
The Bodyguard is a much-loved movie, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary! Were you a fan of the movie growing up and did you rewatch it again after being cast?
You know strangely I never watched the film when I was a kid. Ok, this is the honest truth - I watched the film for the first time when I knew I was doing The Bodyguard musical in China. I’d never seen the film, but the soundtrack was giving me life throughout my entire childhood. I love the movie now; I’ve seen it a million times!
I had a ticket for a special screening of The Bodyguard for the 30th Anniversary. I went to the movie theatre on my own and was so excited. Of course, only this would happen to me and a room full of Whitney Houston enthusiasts – the film starts playing… and it was a cartoon! The venue had messed up and were no longer able to show the film. People wanted to cry, including myself!
Can you briefly summarise the plot (without spoilers) and tell us about your character –Rachel Marron. How would you describe her?
Rachel Marron is a popstar/ actress who is at the height of her career. She is definitely a diva, but kind
I’ve definitely experienced some enthusiastic fans who would forget that we were also people and would show up in Los Angeles and find us on the street. I had to hide in a restaurant one time for a couple of hours until security came to get me.
You were the youngest member of The Pussycat Dolls. What was that like for you? Did you receive any guidance from people within the industry? In the early 00s it was very much sink or swim. I’m not resentful in any way for that, because I now have a structure that works for me that I created for myself. Of course, there were lovely people to jump in and say, ‘You might want to try it this way or that way’, but in the early 00s it was a lot of people minding their own business. However, there are so many people that I owe for my being here, and I’m grateful to them to this day.
Given the life experience you now have, what piece of advice do you wish you could have given your younger self, ahead of being propelled to global stardom?
I’d say that some of the fears you created in your head around interacting with other people are just projections. People aren’t as scary as you think. I was very avoidant of others, trying to just do my job and not create any relationships, when in actuality networking and relationships are what

helps to propel your career. They can’t get a feel for you if you don’t put yourself out there!
I always try and forgive myself, because there are things you don’t know so you have to accept that if you’d known better, you’d have done better.
You’re no stranger to the role, having previously starred in The Bodyguard abroad. What made you want to return, and will you be approaching it differently this time around?
I loved the show, I was jubilant doing it! I want the challenge. I’m really enjoying revisiting the show.
Whitney Houston is also very dear to me, and what she means to Black America. What she went through as a black girl singing pop music was brave. She battled a lot of preconceived notions in the industry, and what she did for me was help to create a lane for the little black girl in the pop group. She is important to me in that respect, so anytime I have the opportunity to sing Whitney’s hits I’m going to do it.
The Bodyguard features an incredible soundtrack, with hits made famous by Whitney Houston. Do you have a favourite number to perform?
My favourite number to perform is ‘Queen of the Night’, but my favourite song is ‘All The Man That I Need’. I watch Whitney’s live performances, because I’m always looking for what I call ‘bail outs’ - moments in the song that we know commercially to be sung a certain way, and then how she does them live. She was such a master, she would find ways to hit a note, working around the difficulty. In her performances of ‘All The Man That I Need’ I think she’s singing to God, as she grew up in the church. If you listen to the song, to me that’s what she’s saying – He’s all the man that she needs.
The songs in the show require powerhouse vocals night after night! How do you vocally prepare for this? Do you have methods you use
to sustain your vocal health?
I actually taught myself to sing listening to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, and since being in the industry and working with different vocal coaches I’ve learnt how to take a lot of pressure off my voice. For me it’s about sustainability to sing night after night. I want it to be the best quality every night, which is a challenge that I’m working on. I tested it out recently on the Masked Singer Australia which went really well.
When it comes to vocal hygiene, I make sure to clean my nose every night with a nasal wash. Something I learnt from my time in China, is to drink cold water when you’re done singing to bring any swelling down. We’re all so programmed to drink hot! These are just some of the things I don’t live without.
What do you hope audiences across the UK will take away from this production?
I look forward to hopefully inspiring some kids to want to work on stage. The beautiful thing about theatre is that it’s live. I’m grateful to be the age that I am, and to have begun at the age that I did before people were relying on autotune. This sounds crazy, but what I look forward to are the mistakes, because it’s real. I think it’s beautiful to see a performer pick up the pieces and keep going if something goes wrong. I love that because it gives me room to just perform as an actress and sing as a singer.
The Bodyguard comes to The Orchard Theatre from Mon 27 March until Sat 1 April, with tickets from £14.50. Book online at orchardtheatre.co.uk.

LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS
By Jane Stevenson
Hello Again
Anyone else got the post New Year doldrums? Despite my cautiously upbeat view of 2023, I confess to having a strong lack of motivation currently.
I’m bored with the never-ending overcast days. I know it’s very on trend to embrace all shades of grey, but does it really need to extend to the weather? The view from my window of the constant clouds and drizzle is not conducive to a positive outlook.
Just to escape the living room today, we took a drive to the bay. There’s more shingle on the road than on the beach, the wind had whipped up the waves into a heaving grey miasma of water, and we learned part of the cliff has fallen into the sea.
It worked its magic though. We saw many people taking an almost childish delight in being drenched in sea spray while taking photos or videos. A few other cars drew up just to stare at the view. Sitting in the cosy warmth of our vehicle, leaving the outdoors to the more adventurous, we swapped smiles and gestures with others, and took a vicarious pleasure at the sheer enjoyment the force of nature offers.
We arrived back home more relaxed and less miserable with renewed energy to do stuff.
‘Stuff’ in our household is choosing paint and wallpaper. Neither Other Half nor I have a clue about interior colour schemes. I overthink everything. I have enough tester pots to redecorate every room in the house and still can’t make up my mind!
I’ve never been particularly practical when it comes to DIY. My dear old dad couldn’t even change a plug without drama so it’s obviously in the family DNA. I’d rather pay someone to climb ladders, mend things, paint and wallpaper a room. I have no less than ten samples of wallpaper sellotaped around the place –whittling it down to even a couple I like has been a mammoth task. I am in awe of some of the people in our local DIY store, who march in firm of resolve, and pick up the supplies they need seemingly without a second thought.
Despite hours spent online I still have little idea if Nutmeg White really will suit the kitchen, or Mineral Mist will look OK in the living room. At least they aren’t any shade of grey.
Once the house is sorted I must work on myself. When living on the North Island. I had a
26 www.dartfordliving.com
wonderful hairdresser, who reined in my wilder desire for coloured hair and kept me looking spic and span with well-shaped brows and a minimum of chin hair.
I couldn’t persuade her to move over here! The upshot is that although I’ve been to the hairdresser twice, I don’t feel ‘right’. The most recent stylist asked if I’d thought about having my hair balayage. I’d rather have a decent style before I start messing about with anything else. I know change is good, otherwise complacency sets in. A new stylist might look at me differently and enhance my look or suggest a colour I wouldn’t have considered before. It is the fear of change more than anything – what if the new person is nowhere as proficient as the previous expert? I ‘d have to grow out the results of such experiments or buy a hat.
Some things I wouldn’t change, and thanks to technology I don’t have to. I still have sessions with my trusted therapist via video call. My dentist has agreed to keep me on as an NHS patient, so an annual trip to Abbey Wood to have my teeth checked can be rolled into a visit to meet up with old friends. It’s the yin and yang of life.
Best wishes for the future

WALKING WITH THE DARTS
by
Palmer,
Hello again, welcome to another edition of Walking With The Darts, a monthly update on all things related to Dartford FC, courtesy of Dartford Living Magazine.
Since my last piece in these pages, the Darts have been busy on the pitch and, at the time of writing, remain at the top of the National League South table.
The end to 2022 was celebrated with a superb performance at local rivals Ebbsfleet United on Boxing Day. Goals from Luke Allen, Luke Coulson, and Maxwell Statham in an eleven-minute spell saw the Darts shock their opponents before anyone had time to get comfortable. Alex Wall netted a fourth later in the first-half, before Ebbsfleet pulled a goal back before the break. Alan Dowson’s side weren’t to be denied though, as they controlled the game to win 4-1.
The New Year was then welcomed in with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Ebbsfleet at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park on New Year’s Day. Goals from Alex Wall, Malachi Napa, Charlie Sheringham, and Connor Essam secured the win and double over our rivals to put a six-point gap between the two sides at the top of the National League Table. In-between the two Kent sides sat Havant & Waterlooville, who at the time, had closed the gap to within five points of the Darts.
The double was then followed by a trip to newly promoted Cheshunt in appalling weather conditions. With the hosts hitting a rich run of form recently, it was expected that a tough fixture was on the cards, yet Tom Bonner and Co worked hard to secure a good 3-1 victory. In-form winger, Luke Coulson was once again on the scoresheet, as was skipper Tom Bonner, who put the icing on the cake after an own-goal by Rowan Liburd had set the Darts on the way to three valuable points.

Unfortunately, Dartford’s unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Hemel Hempstead. The rejuvenated Tudors proved to be a tough nut to crack, as they put on a solid display in front of the Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park faithful, eventually winning a tight contest by three goals to one.
As far as cup competitions are concerned, the adverse weather has played its part once again and our Kent Senior Cup defence at Ebbsfleet United was once again cancelled, as was our London Senior Cup tie against the Metropolitan Police. At the time of writing, a new date for the fixtures have yet to be announced, so keep an eye on the Dartford FC website and social media platforms for more news regarding those.
The squad has seen a few players leave the club recently. Loanees Davide Rodari and Joe Young have both returned to their parent clubs, while
forward Dan Roberts has left for pastures new. We thank them all for their efforts while wearing the Dartford shirt and wish them well for the future.
Moving on to Connor Dymond’s Dartford FC Women squad, they returned to action last weekend (Sunday 15th January) after a quiet period off for the Christmas festivities. Unfortunately, Lizze Adams and Co’s return wasn’t a positive one, as they fell to a 5-3 defeat in the Kent Cup SemiFinal at the hands of Aylesford Ladies FC. Goals from Emily Vaughan and Shauni Griffiths, plus an Aylesford own-goal weren’t enough for the Darts on this occasion. However, they can now focus on their league form and, hopefully, get a good run going and climb the London & South East Regional Women’s League table.
As always, thank you for your continued support and thanks for reading.
DANGERS OF OLDER PEOPLE GETTING TOO COLD
By Christina Uppenkamp - Home Instead
Older adults very often need more support to maintain their core body temperature. With a thinner layer of fat under the skin, and the difficulties they face in being physically active, they are more susceptible to cold temperatures. On top of that, conditions common in elderly people, such as diabetes, stroke, severe arthritis, Parkinson’s, peripheral artery disease and kidney disease can restrict blood flow and lower body temperature.
blockages in the respiratory system and also increases the likelihood of catching a cold or other infections.
• Stroke: cold temperatures make blood vessels constrict, which can increase blood pressure and cause a stroke.
• Reduced strength: the cold results in muscles losing more heat, making them contract. This causes tightness throughout the body and muscles to lose their range of motion. That puts older people at greater risk of falling.
Tips
It’s easy to see why elderly people might be concerned about paying their bills. Older people can take these simple measures to cut back on their bills:
• Speak to your energy provider: Often, older people aren’t aware of discounts or offers available to them. It helps to give your energy provider a call and see if there are any options available to the elderly that can cut costs.
The risks associated with older people getting too cold include:
• Hypothermia: this occurs when body temperature drops below 35 degrees. It can lead to a complete failure in the heart and respiratory system.
• Respiratory disorders: cold air is very often dry air. When we inhale dry air, that fluid evaporates quicker than normal; often, quicker than it can be replaced. This causes the throat to become dry, and a dry throat leads to irritation and swelling which worsens the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
Cold weather also increases mucus production, but the mucus produced in cold conditions is thicker and stickier than usual. This causes
• Warm Homes: Age UK receives funding from energy suppliers through Ofgem’s industry initiative. In turn, Age UK funds local partners across England and Wales, who deliver the Warm Homes programme in their local area.
This targets those over the 65 years old who are at least one of the following:
- on a low income (means-tested benefits or on an income below £16,190 per annum)
- has a long-term health condition
- lives in a ‘hard to heat home’.
Age UK also provides benefit entitlement checks to ensure older people aren’t missing out on what they can receive. In previous years they claimed £3000 on average for each older person that they assisted.

• Nesta’s boiler challenge: Nesta is a non-profit organisation that works to achieve social good. Recently, they launched a campaign to encourage people to reduce the flow temperature of their boilers to 60 degrees; a trick that saves energy usage without compromising on heat. An average household can save around £112 a year from their energy bill.
• Don’t make your fridge and freezer too cool: Some of us will find that our fridges and freezers are at a lower temperature than they need to be, adding to energy bills. According to the Food Standards Agency, fridges should be kept at 5 degrees and freezers at -18 degrees. Turn up the temperatures, while staying within the guidance, if they’re unnecessarily low.
• Don’t heat the whole home unnecessarily: Thermostatic radiator valves stop water through that particular radiator when the room reaches a certain temperature. It takes into account the temperature of other rooms in the house, not just where the main thermostat is, meaning that radiators don’t end up being any warmer than they need to be.
• Draught excluder: It’s a simple item, but draught excluders can work wonders to prevent any door draughts around the home. According to Money Saving Expert, it can cut 2.5% off energy bills.
• Fit a water-saving shower head: Don’t forget about items that prevent water usage, not just energy usage. A shower head that restricts the volume of water that flows through it, yet gives the sensation of a proper shower, knocks more off the utilities bills.
Once alterations have been made around the house to minimise energy bills, your older loved ones should look at what they can do day-to-day to maintain core body temperature. Here are some tips:
• Heat the person, not the home: Don’t forget about the simple items like thick socks and blankets which you can wear to prevent the risks that come with a cold home. Layering up with thermal undergarments such as vests is a great base layer, in addition to normal clothes. At night-time, a blanket underneath a duvet will add an extra layer of warmth and prevent somebody getting too cold. In the daytime and a flask filled with a hot drink by your side will help maintain warmth.
Caution is advised when using wheat bags and hot water bottles; if the rubber is old and thin, it can burst and scold the skin. Ensure that the product used isn’t old.
• Use an electric blanket or an electric throw: There was once a time when the safety of electric blankets was questionable. Thankfully, modern electric blankets are considered commonly safe when used correctly. It’s another item that older people can use to stay warm in bed. There is also a great range of affordable electric throws which can be used when sat on a chair or sofa to give an extra layer of warmth. These are cheap to run and generally cost a few pence per hour of use.
Get moving: Spending much of the day immobile, which is common for older people with difficulty being physically active, puts them at increased risk of getting too cold. Encourage your older loved one to do some gentle physical activities, whether that’s some light housekeeping or easy exercises. They can even do this sat on a chair if they are unable to stand safety. YouTube provides a good selection of exercises they can use as inspiration

In this month’s article we look at a new electric SUV and two concepts to showcase future technologies and features.
By Dhiren Ganesh
BMW i Vision Dee - New BMW i Vision Dee previews the future of the BMW 3 Series saloon along with futuristic features. The concept car showcases an artificial intelligence (AI), called Dee, as well as an advanced head-up display which will form part of the next generation BMW cars. Most notable among those will be the nextgeneration BMW 3 Series, due in around 2027 –the saloon’s shape was used as inspiration for the i Vision Dee’s design. Its head-up display is one of the earliest features that will make it to production into vehicles from 2025. With five stages to choose from, drivers can decide how much digital content they want to see on the display, ranging from vehicle information to complete virtual environments.
2023 Hyundai Kona SUV – Hyundai Kona SUV gets a more spacious interior plus petrol, hybrid and fully electric power options. This follows the looks of other recent models from Hyundai such as the Ioniq 5, with a distinctive visor-style front LED light bar and a matching pixelated partner at the back. The new Kona will be offered with petrol, hybrid and fully electric power. For the petrol and hybrid models respectively, the 118bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and 139bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine (with 43bhp electric motor). The fully electric Kona EV will get a 64.8kWh (usable) battery that’s good for an official range of 285 miles. Inside, the Kona gets dual-screens for both the infotainment screen and driver’s display – both 12.3in in size. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but the Kona is expected to start from around £30,000 when it goes on sale in Spring 2023.
Peugeot Inception revealed - New Peugeot Inception previews the technology, features and designs we’ll see on the French brand’s electric models from 2025. This is an electric car is powered by two electric motors – one on the front axle, one on the rear – giving it fourwheel drive. Together they produce 671bhp for a 0-62mph time of less than 3.0sec. The motors get power from a 100kWh battery, for an estimated range of 497 miles on a single charge. That’s further than any electric car currently on sale in the UK can do. The Inception comes with 800V charging, which increases the voltage to cut the time it takes to fill the battery. Styling wise, the Inception features a sharp, angular body shape. A single piece of glass across the front merges the front grille with three emblematic ‘claws’ at each end. While Peugeot doesn’t plan to put the Inception into production, it uses new underpinnings designed for electric and plugin hybrid cars that will feature on all its new models from 2025.

The football transfer saga of the January transfer window finally ended with Chelsea pipping Arsenal to the signing of Ukraine forward Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal worth up to £89m. Mudryk agreed an eight-and-a-half-year deal for 70m euros (£62m), plus a further 30m euros (£27m) in bonuses.
Mudryk has scored seven goals in 12 league appearances for Shakhtar this season.
The interesting thing about this transfer is that Shakhtar Donetsk president Rinat Akhmetov has pledged to donate £22m to the Ukrainian war effort following the transfer. The Shakhtar president said money from Mudryk’s transfer fee would go towards providing medical and prosthetic treatment, psychological support and meeting specific requests in order to help Mariupol defenders and the families of fallen soldiers.
I hope this is genuine and the money does go towards supporting soldiers and their families, although we will probably never know for sure.

‘APPY TO HELP – MAKING THE MOST OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE NHS
By Dr Julie Taylor
The COVID pandemic accelerated the use of technology and new ways of working in the NHS. Many will have experienced the use of telephone and video consultations by both GP surgeries and hospitals. Patients are able to submit online consultations (e-consults) to GP surgeries via the practice website or NHS App. You may receive a text message to submit photos in advance of a telephone consultation or to answer questions about your health.
The amount that practices and hospitals have engaged with these new ways of working has varied. Practices and hospitals are constrained by the space they have to see everyone face to face due to the significant increase in demand. In some areas, hospital outpatient departments are being used as wards. The investment in additional staff in general practice, such as physiotherapists, paramedics, clinical pharmacists and mental health nurses, mean that there aren’t enough consulting rooms in practices for everyone to have one. The NHS, by necessity, has had to evolve. Some patients benefit from the advantages of remote consultations – they can carry on with their day to day life, rather than sitting in a surgery waiting room, and don’t need to take time off work. But it doesn’t work for all. We offer a mix of face to face and telephone consultations and if a patient booked for a telephone consultation needs to be seen, we will book them in. Most practices work in this way.
We recognise that there is great demand on services. There are some apps and websites that can help you to help yourself. Here are my top 10.

INTERVIEW WITH THE COMMITMENTS STAR NIGEL PIVARO
here we are now at the starting point, tantalisingly close, and I’m really excited about it.”
In the show Pivaro plays Da, the father of aspiring Irish music manager Jimmy Rabitte. Based on Doyle’s 1987 bestselling novel and Alan Parker’s hugely popular 1991 film adaptation, it revolves around working-class Jimmy’s bid to transform a bunch of amateur musicians into Dublin’s finestever soul band, much to his father’s dismay.
“Da provides the dramatic tension,” Nigel says of his character. “There’s lots of friction between Jimmy and the members of the band, but the constant tension in the narrative is between him and his Da. The latter thinks his music is a load of rubbish because it’s not Elvis, basically. As far as he’s concerned, if it’s not Elvis then it’s no good.” Without giving spoilers, the actor adds: “Let’s say he eventually becomes open to persuasion.”
Returning to live theatre for the first time in nearly 20 years, Nigel Pivaro admits: “There’s a slight hint of apprehension.” But the Coronation Street legend is thrilled to be starring in the 2022/2023 UK and Ireland tour of Roddy Doyle’s The Commitments, enthusing:“What’s not to love about it? It’s such an iconic show and I’ve always loved the story and the music. It means I get to spend nine months going up and down the country, and I’ll get to stretch my acting muscles again on stage.” He laughs. “In a way, it’s heralding the fact that I’m back in the business.”
Having worked mainly as a journalist for the past 15 years, the man who came to fame as Terry Duckworth in the beloved soap hasn’t been on stage since 2003, when he toured with fellow former EastEnders star John Altman in Bouncers.
Nigel’s journey back to the stage in The Commitments actually started in 2020. “When it came along it felt like a golden opportunity, but then of course it was postponed because of Covid, then last year it was postponed again. But
The show is packed with great tunes like Try A Little Tenderness, In The Midnight Hour, I Heard It Through The Grapevine and Mustang Sally. Much of the singing is left to the younger cast members. But Nigel, 62, says: “I get to sing a few bars of Elvis rather than the old Motown and Stax classics.” He laughs again. “That’s probably just as well really.”
There’s some common ground between him and Da. “You always find something in any character that you can relate to. He’s a bit of a cynic and as I get older I get more cynical too. I can seriously relate to that. At this age you’ve kind of seen it all, which is where the cynicism comes from.”
The Manchester-born actor studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, made his stage debut in Short Of Mutiny in 1983 and that same year landed the role of bad boy Terry Duckworth in Corrie. He left the soap five years later but returned on a regular basis until 2012, with Terry causing all sorts of headaches for his parents Jack and

Vera (Bill Tarmey and Liz Dawn).
Nigel has many fond memories of his time on the show. “It was so much fun behind the scenes, especially with Bill and Liz, Michael Le Vell, who plays Kevin Webster, and Brian Mosley, who played Alf Roberts. He was so funny off-set. He’d always try and make you corpse when you were waiting to go on. He’d stuff a grape up his nose and daft stuff like that. He was always one for practical jokes and he was nothing like his stuck-in-themud character.”
Over the years Pivaro has also done a lot of stage work and cites groundbreaking drama Just Frank, about an AIDS sufferer, at the Theatre Royal Stratford East as a personal favourite. He’s also been in Funny Peculiar, A View From the Bridge and An Evening With Gary Lineker, to name just a few of his stage credits.
Another theatrical highlight was winning the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 1st award for No Further Cause For Concern, of which he says. “That’s probably the thing I’m most proud of. I found the play myself, put on a reading at Stratford, got the money together to put it on in Wales, Edinburgh and then London, and it was so well received.”
His decision to embark on a second career as a journalist at age 39 might have surprised his fans. “But I’d always been intrigued by journalism and good journalists, and I’ve always been interested in history and politics.” After finishing a postgraduate course, he worked for regional papers and now freelances for national publications as well as making documentaries for the BBC.
A return to acting wasn’t on the cards but in 2019 Nigel bumped into writer Jim Cartwright, who he’d worked with when he toured in The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice in 2000. Cartwright asked him: “When are going to get back into acting? We miss you.” That whetted Nigel’s appetite. He secured representation, scored some auditions, and did plays on BBC Radio 4, including The Corrupted opposite Toby Jones.
“I thoroughly enjoyed it,” he says of doing radio work, “and it was a great reintroduction into acting. There was no pressure because it wasn’t in front of the camera or a live audience. From there I did a few adverts and a lot of voiceovers. I really started to believe in myself again as an actor.”
Nigel is now ready to step back on stage in The
Commitments, which is an all-new production of a show that originally opened in the West End in 2013 before embarking on a countrywide tour three years later. The West End production at the Palace Theatre garnered such rave reviews as “Wonderfully funny and touching” from The Daily Telegraph and “A sweet-soul, solid-gold, five-star blast” from The Sunday Times.
The actor is modest about starring in the new tour, saying: “The show, the story and the music are the real stars. And the music is so beloved by people who grew up with it and younger people who have been introduced to it over the years. The songs are a major factor in its success, along with the skill in which the music and the story are woven together without it ever being ‘Oh, here’s an excuse to sing another great song’.”
Where possible, he’ll be driving himself to and from the tour venues but he won’t be relying on GPS. “It’s anathema to me,” he explains. “I’d rather look at a map and plan my journey that way. And I do love an interesting drive. If I spot something I’ll write it on the map, like ‘Nice 13th century pub here’ or ‘Good cafe there’. It makes touring even more appealing.”
As for what else he’s looking forward to about being back on the road for the first time in nearly two decades, Pivaro says: “Theatres full of happy punters who are having a rollicking night out and really getting into the show, letting themselves go with the music, the story and the joy of it. and being able to forget, at least for a couple of hours, what we’ve all been through over the past two and a half years and all the problems that are still around. I’m sure they’ll go away feeling uplifted.”

Aida - Ellen Kent and the Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv
WED 8 MARCH, 7.30PM
Senbla presents Opera International’s award-winning Ellen Kent Production featuring the Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv, with international soloists, highly-praised chorus and full orchestra.
Aida, the grandest of all Ellen Kent’s operas, returns to the UK with a stunning new traditional production, boasting an impressive set built by Set-Up Scenery in the UK, who also build sets for the Royal Opera Covent Garden.
In Aida, the splendour of Egypt is set against the grandeur of the Coliseum of Rome with Ellen Kent’s direction influenced by the ancient Greek dramas of Euripides and symbolising the powerful religious hold of the priests of Egypt. This tragic story of war, jealousy and revenge at whose heart is the doomed love of the beautiful Ethiopian slave girl, Aida, and the Egyptian hero, Radames, is brought to life in a production set against one of the greatest pieces of music Verdi ever wrote with the well-known arias “Celeste Aida”, “Ritorna Vincitor” and the classic “Triumphal March” featuring a temple dance, cascades of glittering gold and amazing fire performers.
Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

HOMEMADE ‘JAFFA’ CAKES
By Debbie Dickinson
Although not identical, these ‘Jaffa’ Cake inspired bakes are fun to make and delicious. And you can make them in a variety of combinations using different flavoured jelly, jams/marmalades, and chocolate!
You will need:
125g Caster Sugar
125g Margarine
Vanilla Extract or Lemon Juice/Zest
2 Large Eggs
125g Self Raising Flour
25g Plain Flour
½ pack of jelly cubes – any flavour
Jam or Marmalade
200g Chocolate
You will also need:
Shallow tins to set jelly and bake cake in. Circle cutters – assorted sizes
What to do:
Make up the jelly with just half the recommended amount of water. So, for 6 cubes use about 140ml water to make a strong jelly. Pour the jelly into a large shallow tin so you can ‘cut out’ circles once set. A silicon traybake tin would be perfect!
Mix the Sugar with the Margarine until creamed. Add your preferred flavouring. Add the Eggs, one at a time, adding a spoonful from the flour if the mix looks to be ‘curdling’. Once the eggs are combined, add the rest of the Flours and mix – only until just combined.
Pour into a large, shallow brownie tin so the mix is less than 1cm deep. Bake at 150°C for 20 minutes or until baked.
Once baked (and an inserted skewer/knife comes out clean) leave to cool completely.
When cooled and the jelly is set - cut out circles of cake using a cookie cutter, and smaller circles of jelly.
Use the jam/marmalade to stick the jelly circles to the top of the cakes and place on a wire cooling rack, set above a sheet of baking paper.
Break the chocolate into pieces and put into a plastic bowl. Microwave in 30/15 second bursts until about ¾ of the chocolate has melted. Stir until all chocolate has melted.
Pour over your cakes and carefully spread using a spatula or a knife. Allow to set on the rack. If you like you can then turn them over and pop chocolate on the bottoms too. If you’d like the chocolate to set a little better you can refrigerate them.
Enjoy!
