AGENDA - REPORT

Report AGENDA

Ipack-IMA and MEAT-TECH 29 May - 1 June 2018, Milan (I) Organizers: Ipack-Ima Srl team in close collaboration with the two organisations participating in the joint venture, Ucima and Fiera Milano.

IPACK-IMA and MEAT-TECH: the reasons behind a success The recently concluded shows IPACK-IMA and MEAT-TECH marked the most successful editions in the history of the events, fully meeting exhibitors’ expectations and recording significant growth in all key indicators. he 1,503 exhibitors (9.6% more than in 2015) welcomed the large numbers of visitors arriving in Milan in a net exhibition space of more than 62,000 square metres, 11% larger than at the last edition of the show. Growth in numbers of non-Italian exhibitors was particularly significant (+17%). A total of 68,802 visitors arrived at the Fiera Milano exhibition centre during the four days of the show, an all-time record for the two events and more than double the number who attended in 2015.

T

The reversal of the two shows’ fortunes was underscored by the strong international attendance: a total of 18,577 international visitors from 146 countries, 27% of the total and two and a half times more than in 2015. More and more international The figures for countries of origin of visitors also confirm the international reach of the two events. Europe was the top area of residence of visitors, accounting for 57% of all international arrivals (particularly Germany, Switzerland, France and Spain), while one visitor out of every four came from Eastern Europe. Some 15% of int e r n a t i o n a l v i s i t o r s c a m e f ro m t h e Mediterranean region, indicating that the show is seen as a key international event for players in the region (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia were the best represented countries).

Asia was the second largest continent in terms of visitor origins accounting for more than 20% of international attendees (China, India, Turkey and the Russian Federation were the best represented countries), followed by the Americas with around 10% (most significantly USA, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina). The success of the shows was also confirmed by web activity, with 600,000 views of the interactive catalogue and 870,000 visits to the event website. IPACK-IMA and MEATTECH have generated 2.45 million interactions on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter in the last three months. Allied in innovation This important result confirms the success of the plan to relaunch the shows carried out by the Ipack-Ima Srl team in close collaboration with the two organisations participating in the joint venture, Ucima and Fiera Milano, which made significant contributions in terms of organisation and professionalism. The fact that the large Italian machinery manufacturers belonging to Ucima had returned to the show together with other leading international companies in the sector helped to make the event even more interesting for visitors and further expanded the wide range

of product offerings, including process and packaging machinery, materials, end-of-line technologies, tracking, coding and labelling, industrial components and robotics. The exhibition layout proved very popular amongst exhibitors and visitors, with the halls organised mainly according to business communities and not - as is normally the case in exhibitions in the sector - just by the technologies on display. The aim was to make visiting the show easier for professional buyers who are keen to minimise the time they spend at trade fairs. Another major factor behind the success of the exhibitions was the joint scheduling with the other industry shows in The Innovation Alliance. The events Plast, Print4All, Intralogistica Italia, IPACK-IMA and MEATTECH were all part of a single exhibition project attended by 150,110 visitors, including 105,770 buyers, and showcasing innovation and technologies for the world of plastic and rubber processing, processing & packaging, converting and printing, and internal logistics.

Pharmintech 2019 10-12 April 2019, Bologna (I) Organizers: Pharmintech Srl (Milan); Organizing Secretariat: BolognaFiere Cosmoprof Spa.

LIFE SCIENCE 4.0 at Pharmintech Life Science industry represents an Italian excellence: Italy is one of the leading pharmaceutical producers in the European Union, thanks to investments in innovation of the entire supply chain. Pharmintech, the event organized by BolognaFiere and dedicated to the pharmaceutical, nutritional, cosmeceutical and biotech industry, will be back in Bologna (Italy) in 2019, from 10 to 12 April, focusing on what’s new for the supply chain and on the interaction with new technologies.

he Italian pharmaceutical industry continues to grow, and in 2018 it is preparing to overcome the rates of German production for the leadership in Europe for the production of pharmaceutical products. According to data recently released by Farmindustria, growth by 3% on production, 12% of export and 2.3% in terms of employment is being registered. In Europe, the cornerstone of global pharmaceutical production together with the United States and Japan, Italy accounts for 26% in terms of production and 19% for what concerns the market. Farmindustria states that the Italian pharmaceutical production has reached a value up to 30 billion euros, 44 when considering also related industries, with 2.7 billion euros invested in production, research and development, for activities with a high level of innovation. From 2010 to 2017, industrial production grew by 13%, exports by 52%, the productivity index by 19%.

New technologies such as IoT, cybernetics, augmented and virtual reality, require the management of huge amounts of data, through the interaction between new information systems on one side, and machines, equipment, instruments and medical devices on the other, calling companies to think about new business models. From a research carried out by Farmindustria, it emerges that the data generated every day by measuring, transmitting and disseminating biometric and biomedical information amount to 2.5 million terabytes.

The excellence of the Life Science sector highlighted by these data is closely related to the high quality and technological know-how of the Italian manufacturing industries of the entire system: a trade show like Pharmintech in Italy, therefore, is the right occasion to give visibility to the entire sector and to its production excellence, representing the best of process technologies, packaging, laboratory instruments, packaging, components and the best digital and automation solutions applied to the sector, from IoT - Internet of Things to data governance. Nowadays, in every segment of Life Science, science and technology are in strict conjunction: the partnership between pharmaceutical, biotech, nutritional and cosmeceutical companies on the one side, and companies specialized in artificial intelligence on the other, is leading to a real revolution that leads to the concept of ‘Life Science 4.0’, a natural evolution of the phenomenon that experts have called “Pharma 4.0”. Due to the increase in life expectancy, a series of autoimmune diseases, intolerances and cancers are emerging, that require more and more personalized drugs. The dialogue between genomics and Big Data, between pharma and ICT makes it possible to produce these drugs in a sustainable way. The “Pharma 4.0” revolution consists precisely in realizing what was not possible before.

AFI (the Italian Pharmaceutical Industry Association) has recently conducted a survey involving 200 professionals and companies in the pharmaceutical sector, to evaluate the development of a corporate attitude taking advantage of the opportunities generated by a new approach to data governance and its brand-new production steps. The scenario emerging from this survey shows how it is necessary to continue investing in this area to maintain the levels of development and growth of the sector, as well as the leadership reached at an international level in recent years. The lack of adequate data governance, in fact, risks compromising the qualitative level of drugs production and distribution, and consequently can constitute a real threat to the excellence of the Italian pharmaceutical industry. Taking as a starting point these data provided by AFI, Pharmintech wants to anticipate these phenomena, trying to create greater awareness on the part of the management of large pharmaceutical groups, which are investing in technologies for adequate management and data security. During the exhibition, these issues will be discussed with specific seminars and round tables, while the most advanced technological solutions for adapting the industry to the ongoing revolution will be exhibited by companies representing the international excellence of the pharmacy system.

Bispenser: Easy, Secure, Practical and Ecological Bispenser by Tacom is innovative dosing system on carton. It combines the reliability of the classical reclosable dispenser with a dispenser with “incorporated sprinkler”. Alternative to traditional glass or plastic cylindrical spreaders for granular food products, Bispenser is an advanced, resealable, dosing system. The dispenser in special waterproof certified cardboard is a monomaterial pack (but it also exists in the bioplastics version).

It allows the package contents to be poured through the adjustable hole, depending on the granularity of the product and the desired flow. The side flaps control and direct the flow making Bispenser more efficient then traditional sprinklers. It fits for all products that require a dispenser equipped with sprinkler, like salt, sugar, sweeteners, flavourings, thickeners and seasonings. The nozzles can be recycled with the case or separated and sent for composting.

When an idea becomes glass Since the fifties the Zignago Vetro Group has been the undisputed protagonist of the Italian and international market for glass packaging. With a wide, versatile and diversified offer and a quality difficult to equal, the Group is present today in the cosmetics&perfumery and in the food&beverage sectors, recognized and established as a global reference brand. The wide range of products and the novelties of the standard collections remain the core business of the Group, evermore oriented towards enriching the quality and the efficiency of its own services. In the cosmetic sector, the Zignago Vetro Group is working to propose complete packaging solutions, in order to be able to satisfy “all-round” customer needs; this is the case of the Licata product, where the glass container is proposed together with the accessories (plate, capsule and tray). This, however, is not the only Group tendency; in fact, the company is also working to create a new line of green recycled glass cosmetic packaging, confirming its commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment.

“Marina”, the first dispenser with motor outside the bottle Taplast SpA devised a new range of pumps, which enable the delivery of a greater dose of product, but at a competitive cost and small footprint, while also providing a premium experience to the consumer. Marina is a dispenser that fits on all bottles with 28/410 necks. It is ideal for traditional and viscous liquids up to 10,000 cps for the food, household and personal care sector. Made of plastics and steel spring, the transfer of power unit from the outer cap onto the bottle enables a smaller pump, with a stroke length of 11 against the 25 mm currently on the market today. It is 20% lighter, made in 8 pieces instead of 11: compact to transport, it optimizes logistics.Marina allows consumers a premium experience thanks to the visual flow, meaning the possibility of seeing the liquid in the dispenser body and the suck back, which keeps the dispenser clean.

Cryovac Optidure™ New generation of hi-tech bags by Sealed Air: available in two different structures, represent a complete solution for packaging food products subject to wear, combining sturdiness (also against punctures and abrasions) and low gauge.Multilayer and coextruded, these pouches, resistant to stress and with high heatshrink capability, are perfect for ensuring food safety and the reduction of food waste along the distribution chain. The OSB system avoids adhesion between stacked bags and favors high output while the sealability notably reduces leaks and consequent risk of contamination, even when the distribution chain is long, as in the case of exports. It is ideal for seasoned products (cold cuts, meats, cheese). Sustainability parameters: thin material, available in 75 and 95 μm (thickness). The high heat shrinkage, combined with a thin structure, attains levels of protection equal to thicker materials while minimizing environmental impact. As for image & design, it assures excellent luminosity and transparency deriving from the innovative composition of the structure. The valorization of the brand is obtained thanks to the pack’s bright, shiny appearance and print possibilities.

ITALIAN DESIGN

Seven “Best Packaging” items featuring technical and technological innovation, without overlooking design quality and the environment: the results of the 61st edition of the contest promoted by the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio, this year in collaboration with Ipack-Ima 2018. Focus on the winners and the jury’s motivations.

Packaging Oscar 2018:

WHO WON

AND WHY

his year’s success was also guaranteed because, beyond the results achieved by the individual companies, the contest organized by the Istituto Italiano Imballaggi remains a valid moment of encounter for the packaging sector. As ever the awards ceremony (which took place on June 30th during Ipack-Ima, partner of the event) was well orchestrated, featuring a professional informality we have become accustomed to, among other things benefiting from an evocative location: indeed the large foyer of the Fiera Milano service center, illuminated by Fucksas’ sail, welcomed a host of operators. The encounter was packed and the winners full of enthusiasm, drawn on by the actress Debora Villa who, with measured irony and a by now proven experience, marked out the various moments of the ceremony.

T

The proceedings were opened by the President of Ipack-Ima, Riccardo Cavanna, who reaffirmed his approval of the long and fruitful collaboration between the exhibition organization and the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio. The stage also saw the “debut” of the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio’s new president, Anna Paola Cavanna, who - smiling at the homonymy - summed up the highlights of her governance program for the 2016-2018 biennium: close-up on companies, with actions designed to bring entrepreneurs and management closer together, but with an eye to communication to all targets, in particular the consumers. President Cavanna also closed the event, re-launching the historic alliance of the Istituto with Italy’s National Packaging Consortium Conai, that will be co-organizer of the 2019 contest, the sixth to be dedicated to the environment.

As per regulation, the benefits that the new packaging solution were seen to have, while performing the same functions as the solutions currently existing on the market, were taken into account. The reference market was also considered, evaluating the maturity or level of growth and development, focusing on the real needs expressed by the sector in which the solution was used. Of particular interest were the packaging solutions realized with new materials, the result of technical research, and the innovative solutions that allow energy saving, the optimisation of the production cycle, production costs and times. Similarly the focus was on solutions that prevent waste and increase product shelf life, in other words, smart packaging, and what is best suited to the needs of emerging markets, in particular vending and e-commerce.

The motivations behind the choice. The evaluation criteria adopted by the Jury, called to examine the 19 products in the running, were set out by Maurizio Boccacci Mariani, Full Professor of La Sapienza, who presided over the 2018 edition, with a focus on technical and technological innovation. Î

Sustainability criteria: monomaterial, 100% recyclable; it allows an up to 21% increase of pieces transported on trucks, representing a saving of 102 g of CO2 equivalent per km per pack. The “vertical” and “all-in-one” logic of 1Derbox® and its structure enable an attractive, tidy shelf and immediate identification of the product by the operator who can position it quickly and conveniently.

Caffarel Pochette A history of passion, tradition and taste that begins in 1826: that of Caffarel, the Turin house of gianduia chocolates. The packaging for these sweets should be nothing less. Created by Industrialbox, which with integrity and dedication has developed a GZ paperboard pochette weighing 380 gr and featuring the classic yet festive colors of the historic candy maker, an ambassador of Made in Italy. Hot gold foil stamping with relief micro-incision on the same surface conveys a sense of prestige and elegance to the packaging, while the dark brown, effected by 5-color printing and opaque UV varnish, is used to evoke the delicious and unique products contained within. eady to eat foods, with or without a quick preparation: ready to use, therefore, or semi-prepared (only requiring heating for example) or again frozen and that still require cooking.Popular abroad for a long time, convenience foods are also becoming established on the Italian market, mainly in large retail outlets but also through delicatessens and, lastly, via online purchases that are increasing sharply. In Italy the phenomenon has established itself above all to replace the “usual sandwich” during the lunch break with a food considered healthier and tastier, and also cheaper when compared to lunch consumed at the restaurant.Abroad the phenomenon is even wider and also involves domestic habits: according to some analyses covering central and northern Europe, only in one house in three is cooking done every day. In recent times the use of ready meals has also been linked in some way to the economic crisis. This is the case, for example, in Germany, where the reduction in consumption has led people to more frequently replace restaurant dinners in favor of important quantities of ready-made or more often semi-ready meals to be consumed at home.

In Italy: an expanding phenomenon The most significant target for convenience food is still that of singles, although, in the case of “ready to eat”, one should consider the “curiosity factor”, especially with regard to ethnic foods, difficult to prepare but now widely available also in Italy. Suffice it to say that in 2017 sushi consumption alone increased by almost 50%.The range of convenience products is wide and diversified (from appetizers to desserts). Like any new growing market, it shows double-digit growth rates: in 2017 in Italy growth in volume should be around 12%, which becomes 15% if we look at the trend in value. As often happens in terms of food, in Italy the market for ready meals has characteristics all of its own: in this the Italians do not deny themselves and demand high quality, a wide variety - that respects and reflects the habits of the Mediterranean diet - and healthy foods. One should consider that according to the Nomisma study “International trends in the fresh cut convenience produce market”, Italy is the European Union country with the highest per capita consumption of fresh cut produce (washed and cut fruit and vegetables): 1.6 kg per year (just under 3% of total vegetable sales) versus 1.4 kg in the UK and 0.5 kg in Germany. In Italy in 2017 12,647 t/000 of convenience products were packaged, with 80% attributable to first courses including frozen foods, ethnic first courses and soups. 12.7% is accounted for by fresh cut convenience fruit and vegetables (salads, fruit salads, cooked vegetables, etc.). Fresh fish products include both starters and main courses - sushi is not included among this listing - and account for 1.3%. The frozen food listing (1%) includes pizzas, while the “other” listing (5% of the entire convenience food range) includes various meat-based preparations (veal in tunafish sauce, meatballs, various stews, etc.), savory pies, sushi and desserts.

The right packaging Given that these foods are high in service content, their packaging has to be likewise (the food must be stored in an optimal way, respecting the organoleptic qualities and shelf life, which can go from one day to several months, as in case of deep-frozen products).Analysing the Istituto Italiano Imballaggi database, it is clear that in this market area, in 2017, about 473,000 tons of primary packaging were produced. If we add secondary packaging, or carton boxes used mainly in the frozen area, the figure reaches 480,000 tons. As for the packaging in direct contact with the product, it is totally made out of plastic. The typologies used are in fact the trays in PET and/or polystyrene (85%) and the pouches and trays in flexible polylaminate (15%). The total packaging used for packaging products in the convenience food sector (trays, bags and pouches) accounts for some 34% of total plastic packaging used in the food sector (excluding beverages). • Trays. They are mostly made of PET, but we also find trays in laminated converter flexible materials: intended for various types of products, they have the characteristic of being printable and have a thickness of not more than 0.2 mm.• Pouches. They are made in laminated converter flexible materials and are used to package fresh cut convenience fruit and vegetables. • Closures. Used on the trays of ready dishes, they are made 90% in laminated converter flexible film and are heat-sealed to the tray. They enable the storage of products with a shelf life of more than 48 hours and all foods packaged in modified atmosphere. In all other cases a plastic film or a lid of the same material as the tray can be used.

With Granarolo G+, less sugar Produced with 100% Italian milk, the product is already available both at the refrigerated counter and on the long-life UHT shelf: Granarolo G is the first and only “milk drink” in Italy with 30% less sugar than milk. This result is obtained thanks to an innovative filtration technology that reduces sugars without altering the fat, protein, vitamins and mineral content and thus keeping all the nutritional elements

unaltered. Also lactose-free (<0.01%), the complete line of “functional” solutions, comprising 2 high-temperature pasteurized refrigerated references, to be found on the environmental shelf, both in the 1 litre format. The long-life functional references on the environmental shelf in the half-litre format are proposed in three distinct formulations: one with magnesium, vitamin B6 and B12; one with fibre and source of vitamins A and D3, one with omega3 (EPA and DHA)..

Single-dose with built-in applicator The Lameplast single-dose becomes even smarter: not only does it combine practicality, security and the right amount of product, but it also acquires an especially designed applicator and comes in different variants (simple and smooth, with brush, sponge or with irregular and massaging surface...) to thus to favour the correct application of a liquid, gel or cream. To guarantee quality, the single-dose is made in one step and the applicator is immediately inserted into the container, thus eliminating the risk of loss of product and keeping it sterile until opening. The single-dose with applicator has a cap with a high fin, that can accommodate a label with the product information as required by law. A Data Matrix or QR Code can in fact be inserted, in accordance with European and American anticounterfeiting (EU FMD and US DSCSA) standards, which will shortly come into force. Single or in strips, the Lameplast single dose can be used in the medical, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, veterinary and cosmetic fields and, thanks to the knowhow of the Modena based company, can be produced with various plastic materials guaranteeing high chemical resistance, or with bio-based materials.

Pusterla 1880: growing in the luxury segment With the acquisition of 51% of the capital of the company Virojanglor by Pusterla 1880 a group has been created that is positioned among the leaders in secondary luxury packaging. The turnover of the new company, made entirely in the world of high-end products, in particular in the wines & spirits and perfumery & cosmetics sectors, will reach €100 million in 2018. The project is based on the cross collaboration of leading technological production plants in their respective sectors, covering a complete range of packaging materials, namely cases and boxes covered in cardboard, complex cardboard boxes assembled manually, boxes in metal, PU, wood and multi material, as well as all the components of thermoforming and injected plastic. The complementarity of the industrial models and the convergence of medium-term strategic visions will allow the Group to benefit as quickly as possible from the commercial and operational synergies underlying the project, creating a European company able to offer customers complete and complex solutions, including the packaging of the finished product and the related logistic service.

Molecule 90-60-90 The first 100% certified Italian cola now also has its glass cladding: thanks to Verallia whose task, in the Molecola project, went beyond the provision of the glass version of the bottle for the Ho.Re.Ca channel, adapting their production processes to a creative idea developed for another material (PET). The real mission entrusted to Verallia was to translate and apply to glass a design which gives life to a totally new Italian style icon, perfectly in line with the beverage created by entrepreneur Francesco Bianco who, for the cola inspired by an ancient Piedmontese recipe from the late 1800s, only wanted national ingredients mixed with the coded knowledge of Italian tradition. The elegance of the bottle is enhanced by its sinuous shape and by the proportions of the same, modelled according to the mythical post-war feminine beauty standards (hence the name, Molecule 90-60-90), but also from the precious weft on the glass, which stresses the tailor made nature of the product, with the bottle that features as an elegant piece of bespoke tailoring.

FACTS & FIGURES

Eastern Europe: slowdowns, with positive notes for plastics According to the study, macroeconomic and political turbulence should slow down growth in key Eastern European markets. The growth estimated by 2020 is in fact just 1.2%, for 279 millions in value. The use of sustainable packaging and of cheaper materials such as plastic (stand-up pouches first and foremost), driven by the consumption of the middle class and residents in urban centers is expected to increase. PET bottles will grow at a CAGR of 2.2%, reaching around 4 billion units sold by 2020, while glass bottles will be the preferred packaging for premium food and beverages. Among the product categories, energy drinks will have the highest growth (+6.1%), especially in Hungary and Poland. In addition to thin walled plastic containers, which will reach +2.6% in 2020, the food market will be driven by flexible film (155 billion units sold in 2015). The Beauty and Personal Care sector (8.7 billion units in 2015) will grow more slowly, with cardboard packaging leading the way, followed by glass packaging (+3%). The Home Care sector (4.4 billion units in 2015) will generate low volumes, due to weak economic conditions. Middle East and Africa: up by +5.3% The Middle East market is estimated to grow by 5.3% to 211 billion. An acceleration of flexible packaging is expected (CAGR 5.7%), which will replace traditional packaging. Thin-walled plastic containers (+7.8%) and PET bottles (+6.6%) also showed strong growth, while glass bottles will see smaller increases of +2.2%. In the period forecast, the most attractive product category for consumers will be cookies, with sales that, by 2020, will add 750 million packs to the 2.2 billion units sold in 2015. The food segment (86.1 billion units in 2015), in addition to driving the growth of thin-wall plastic containers (+7%) thanks to the increased consumption of yoghurt and milk, will see a surge in the stand-up pouches (+11.5%), while in the beverage segment (68.5 billion units in 2015) there will be a 4.7% increase in packaged products, driven in particular by PET bottles (+9.4%) and metal cans. The Beauty and Personal Care sector (5 billion units in 2015) will put in a good showing, with a CAGR of 6% forecast between 2015 and 2020, with flexible packaging leading the way at +7%, followed by cardboard packs (+6%). The pet food market (282 million euros in 2015) remains marginal, where the aluminium/plastic bags will be replaced by cheaper tins. Home Care (3.4 billion products sold in 2015) is expected to grow by 2020 (4% CAGR), driven by flexible plastics (+5%) and recyclable containers.

The merger between All4Labels and Nuceria was completed in record time. Four months were enough to put together a global packaging group of over 500 million in turnover, 29 production plants and 3,000 employees, which aims to have its say on the international markets. Keystone of the operation: the sharing of values by the protagonists, all with a clear entrepreneurial identity and a common vision. A question and answer session with Guido Iannone, general manager of Nuceria Group, and now also Vice-President Sales & Business Development of the group ... who speaks to us between the lines of the difference between courage and recklessness.

Nuceria:

growth and continuity By Stefano Lavorini

www.packmedia.net

I N D U S T RY

From the left Î Guido Iannone (VicePresident Sales & Business Development All4Labels Group) and Antonio Iannone (CEO Nuceria Group).

f we want everything to remain as it is, everything must c h a n g e” w r o t e G i u s e p p e Tomasi di Lampedusa in Il Gattopardo. Is there anything of this paradox in what you have achieved? Everything stems from the desire to aim for something that projects our industrial reality into another dimension... A carefully conceived and programmed “quantum” leap, that we all faced with enthusiasm and determination. In fact, a true and proper merger between two important concerns has been completed: Nuceria, benchmark in Italy in the field of labeling and integrated packaging and All4Labels, among the prime global packaging groups. For our part, consistent with our vocation for change, at the very time of our greatest growth (in 2017 Nuceria’s revenues amounted to € 65.5 million, Ed.) we once again chose to be disruptive and innovative: we have therefore reinvented our business model to respond to the demands of a global market that requires proximity, that is made up of multiplant concerns, but with local cultural roots. We are convinced that today there is only one way of doing business and that is to as quickly as possible implement projects to acquire new market shares, and diversify and expand one’s product portfolio.

What advantages have you gained? Becoming part of a larger family, which shares with us the passion for the development of packaging solutions designed for new and more sustainable ways of consumption, allows us to expand our know-how and consolidate our relations with our customers. This means ensuring a longer and more solid timespan for our companies, also thanks to the process of world wide diversification. Hence at the basis of all this lies the strong sharing of an industrial project, designed in the interest of our partners, our companies and our employees.

”I

www.packmedia.net

How did you get to make the merger with All4Labels? Decisive the fact that All4Labels was born from the merging of three companies - Rako, X-label and Baumgarten: all family businesses, with a strong identity and a leader in their respective markets, who decided to come together to offer a better service to their customers and explore new business opportunities. The reason why we became part of this group is because it was built on the respect and strengthening of the different identities. Hence at the basis of the operation there is the common belief in the “value of entrepreneurship”, so that the individual realities are able to continue to guarantee their customers commitment, closeness, empathy, listening and speed. And indeed if the operation took place in such a short time it is because there is a combination of ideals, of values, approaches, entrepreneurial styles and managerial skills. At the basis of our success, is the fact that for some time we have embarked on a path of managerialisation in continuity with our roots and our Italian character. With this in mind, the merger has accelerated the process, because we have grafted our resources, skills and knowledge onto an already efficient model.

What changes in organizational terms? Technically, the merger was carried out through a share exchange, which makes the Iannone family shareholder of the group and that keeps it in charge of the activities in Italy, taking on additional responsibilities within the new globalized structure. All members of the Nuceria team are called upon to contribute to the common growth, taking on global challenges: My father Antonio continues to be the CEO of Nuceria Group and my sister Paola, while maintaining her role as head of sales for the paper converting division, has joined the group’s marketing board. For my part, I am honored to be part of the All4Labels shareholders board, representing the family, as well as the group’s Global Management Board as vice-president, heading one of the global sales business units.

I N D U S T RY

Will your growth be focused on multinational players? Ours is a project of all-round growth. Safe to say the merger meets the needs of multinationals, but the goal is also that of wishing to offer all our customers greater competitiveness. We will therefore strive to allow local market to grow, which will benefit from some concrete competitive advantages of the group’s overall activities, developing the Italian structure.

What qualitative and quantitative goals have you set yourselves? The speed of change is fundamental and we aim to reach 1 billion turnover in 5 years, both through organic growth in all regions of the world and through new M&A operations. Strength and enthusiasm are the driving force behind this process of creating wealth and human value. What we like to think is that, thanks to the new structure, we can aspire to leave a mark on our industry, rewriting the rules of the game. And indeed, internationalization has always been the priority for us: Our Milan facilities represented a first step to establish our presence in Europe. However having facilities in Italy alone was not enough seen as an international company. Now Nuceria is part of a large group with 29 plants throughout the world, a turnover of over 500 million euros and 3,000 employees. A totally different ballgame.

After the merger, in terms of your offer, have you identified overlapping areas? The All4Labels group makes about 75% in the self-adhesive label market and 25% in the flexible packaging market, an area in which we were already planning significant investments thanks to the mini-bonds issued in January. Indeed in our Nocera plant the flexible division is coming into being, with wideweb printing machines. Hence the entry of Nuceria into the group brings an additional capacity of proven value. Things are different as far as the folding division is concerned in terms of converting, which for the group translates into a diversification of the offer. It is certainly a further element of synergistic positivity, so much so that already in these months the cross-selling effect on All4Labels customers is having positive repercussions. The group strongly believes in the “one stop shop”, and for this reason we will invest even more in the flexible and folding sectors in the coming years. In short, we have nothing to be afraid of, only a great desire to get down and do things.

Ultimately, in the light of events, what distinguishes courage from recklessness? Strength of spirit and determination in facing risks and sacrifices, with awareness and a sense of responsibility towards ourselves and others... This is what courage is for us, which is quite another thing from making rash, unpondered choices. We are certainly not “sleepwalkers on a ledge” and the sense of the entire operation lies in a care for planning that has always featured in our entrepreneurial approach. Certainly it was not our first courageous choice. Courage and lucid madness belong to our DNA and have always characterized the most important phases of our growth. Being able to see what others do not see. This is what I learned from my father Antonio, who not only founded Nuceria but who once again acted as a great visionary, and by driving change, opend the way to the future.

Thus, alongside its competences in the soft drinks, mineral water, wine, spirits and food sectors - for which more than 750 closure systems and more than 500 inspection and control systems are designed each year - as of today the great experience of Tirelli enters into the world of cosmetics. The Arol Group can now count on more than 750 specialists in its 5 Italian production sites and in the 14 operational locations on 4 continents, which serve a base of over 31,400 installed machine

ISO/TC 313 Packaging Machinery Group The new international technical committee ISO/TC 313 Packaging Machinery has been set up under Italian chairmanship. Ucima and the global packaging machinery industry are at the centre of a major new development in the field of international technical standards. In April this year, the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) approved the proposal from Italy to set up ISO/TC 313 Packaging Machinery, a new international technical committee that will be responsible for drawing up standards for packaging plant and machinery with particular reference to aspects of safety, design and efficiency. This decision further confirms the leadership of Italian packaging machinery manufacturers, an industry that generates 80% of its revenues from exports and controls a very large share of the global market. As the architect and promoter of the new Technical

Committee, Italy has been assigned the international secretariat for regulatory work involving all countries that are major producers or users of packaging technology. Andrea Malagoli, CEO of IMA (photo) has been appointed Chairman of ISO/TC 313 Packaging Machinery after being nominated by the Board of Ucima, of which he is Vice Chairman. Born in 1965, Malagoli has a degree in Economics and Commerce from the University of Modena and is a member of the Vacchi family, the majority shareholder of the IMA Group. The creation of the new Technical Committee will bring considerable benefits for companies operating in the industry. Unified standards will now apply worldwide and not just in Europe, resolving the sectoral conflict between European, American and other countries’ standards.

ROBOPAC, ONE GLOBAL COMPANY Internationalization, a local-for-local approach, strategic buy-ups: the growth of Robopac, which in recent years has implemented a series of actions as part of a highly ambitious development plan, continues. An entrepreneurial line devised by the Aureli family and achieved with the precious contribution of the company’s management, that sets itself the goal of becoming the global reference for the supply of end-of-line machinery and combined solutions for packaging. The agreement with Ocme, a historic Parma based company finalised in May 2017, should be read in this light: operating as a system by pooling one’s strongpoints, adding experience and expertise and attaining the required critical mass in order to better control the global market. Robopac and Ocme today have a total turnover of over 300 million euros, 1,400 employees (75% of which in Italy and 25% in the rest of the world), with the sale of more than 25,000 packaging and wrapping installations to their credit, 16 international offices, 9 production plants in Italy, Brazil, USA and China and more than 200 post sales assistance field engineers spread throughout the world.

As of last June Sotemapack, with a thirty-year history behind it, has also become part of the Robopac world: a new partnership that reinforces the range of solutions available to customers. Sotemapack - whose main shareholder is the De Martis family - has a turnover of around 10 million euros. As with Ocme’s Gatteschi family, here too the two families found a tally in terms of values, constituting a joint-venture. Robopac has become majority shareholder, while considering its partner’s contribution in terms of technological and commercial innovation as fundamental. Lastly, at the beginning of the year Sacmi also chose Robopac as a partner to improve its end-of-line technological offer: in particular Sacmi Packaging solutions for various sectors such as Tissue, Food, Home and Personal Care and Beverage (end-of-line automations and handling of the finished product) have passed under the control and management of Robopac.

ITALIAN MARKET

The industry at the t The signs revealed showing a good run of the packaging and food processing sector are consolidating, thanks to the reinforcement of the growth dynamic across the entire sector (suppliers of technology, materials and services associated with activities of processing and packaging food and other products, and the users of these products and services). Bolstered hence by the figures and by good expectations for the future, Italian operators in the materials and packaging and process machinery sector have created the 2018 edition of Ipack-Ima and Meat-Tech (Fiera Milano, Rho, 29 May- 1 June): a comprehensive event in terms of format and contents, also in virtue of the contiguity of the set of fairs that go to make up the bone structure of the Innovation Alliance (Print4All, Plast, Intralogistica Italia). To those who have chosen to show technology and skills live for the occasion, we asked them for the reasons behind their choice.

But we also asked them to more broadly reflect on the moment in time which we are experiencing, aiming at sharing an approach to entrepreneurship that, given the results of the most recent studies, still seems to be positive. We hence decided to repropose a “collective” reflection by way of a survey online focussed on “The industry at the time of Ipack-Ima”. We thank all those who took part in the undertaking, with which we wished to offer an updated scenario of the market and the general feelings as to the same. Once again we focused on the value of the tradition of Italian manufacturing, the good and concrete business administration, the contribution that research and technology offer for the success of a product, without obviously overlooking what it means to live and operate in a global market. irst of all, a figure already registered in our previous surveys has been confirmed: Italians say they do not want to take production elsewhere. They continue to express a moderate interest in starting up business networks or growing externally, while about half of respondents believe it is important to grow internally. Hence, the great attention to research, decisive factor in qualifying both the offer of advanced technological products (preferably new) and services, which must always be more extensive and specific. It goes without saying, therefore, to develop here it is necessary to invest generously in human resources and new professional skills.

SE THE SECRET

www.packmedia.net

I TA L I A N S T R AT E G I E S

Rooted in the heartland of Bologna’s packaging valley, Marchesini Group has long since ventured onto the global market with state-of-the-art processing and packaging solutions in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food product field. Lately it has implemented a policy of buy-ups and partnerships, that is leading the group to further extend and specialise its offer in terms of technology, markets and production. A process that, aiming at valorising and making the most out of the wealth of expertise, technology and manpower of the companies purchased, works as a considerable growth accelerator. Hence what is their secret? The reflections of Pietro Cassani, group CEO, gathered at their stand set up at the recent Ipack-Ima, might highlight an “Italian style” in this field as well. And for once, we spoke of men and not machines.

T OF GROWING By Stefano Lavorini

he lead thread, that ties together the events that have marked the history of the Marchesini group over these last few years - the buy-up of Schmucker, SEA Vision, Vibrotech and Dumek, to the inauguration of the Thermoforming Hub at Carpi - seem to aim at a precise goal: build the future without shedding or discarding knowhow and expertise. Where to now having achieved all this? We want to grow, because as I always say companies are like the moon: they cannot stay at a standstill, they either wax or wane. And hence, since we don’t want to “wane”, with German and Chinese competitors on our heels, we are compelled to grow quickly at the rhythms imposed by the global world. Our path towards growth is via internal means, but also via an effective strategy of buy-ups: the combination of these two factors is decisive.

T

www.packmedia.net

(a lot and well)

What is the optimum size threshold on the global market? Let’s say that some important synergies are triggered also thanks to size. The most significant opportunities come along when a company reaches or exceeds a billion in turnover, because, clearly, this enables you to wield a greater weight in terms of customers and suppliers, as well as anticipate innovatory trends and take part bye playing a leading role in the international scenario of buy-ups… As occurs in national state politics, even if in the world of enterprise the best opportunities arise out of the network and via relations, from the capacity to influence and not be influenced. Hence our objective is to grow and to continue to grow. But for sure, I think that the best strategy is not to create a sole, gigantic concern, because it would be highly complex to run. Often, indeed, when you get beyond a certain size - the physiological “threshold” is generally a workforce of a thousand - you risk getting tangled

up in the web of bureaucracy, becoming inefficient, sustaining pockets of unproductiveness. What works though is harbouring the synergic contribution of many companies within one group, so that they are governed, presided over, yet that they preserve a good level of independence and entrepreneurial autonomy, conducive to passion, motivation, creativity and dynamism… That is to say… buying a company is easy, running it and valorising its wealth of expertise and experience is a lot harder. Some groups have fallen into the error of implementing purely financially based purchasing models, with forceful policies of integration that only consider the numbers and not the contribution of the people involved.

ITALIAN STRATEGIES

It is highly important to gain a deep understanding of the characteristics of a manufacturing concern, valorising and making the most out the the expertise of those who work there: something that demands time, attention and hard work, but that allows one to provide an enterprise with real prospects. For a company with the right expertise, its purchase by a leading group like Marchesini means being able to enjoy important benefits in terms of organization, promotion and visibility, as well as being able to count on the support of an extensive commercial network. In this case the purchase is a catalyser that accelerates growth. And the results show it. We adopted this approach with Dumek, a “highly” Bolognese concern, small in size but with an important history and a technological culture that has made it a landmark in the field of cosmetics sector processing machines (turboemulsifiers and fusers). Our contribution, as Marchesini Group, has been mostly that of providing more evolved instruments for management control, as well as new commercial opportunities, without dismantling the consolidated network of suppliers and expertise built up by the company over the years.

30 • 1/2018 - selection

At any rate, like in cuisine, there is no such thing as one single recipe… When you buy a company to relaunch its products, the brand and its expertise, you need to combine integration with a good level of autonomy; the right balance obviously depends on the context, the people, the situation of the main markets. Experience though teaches that incorporating a concern without valorising and making the most of its human capital, is equivalent to destroying its value, because stimuli and enthusiasm are stifled.

Indeed Marchesini is facing a great challenge in looking beyond its historical vocation anchored to mechanical engineering - according to the Bolognese tradition - in order to seize new opportunities... Although the expansion of the technological offer and the outlet markets go hand in hand, this does not mean that mechanical engineering and kinematic skills take second place: indeed, they continue to be Marchesini’s core business. But even in the world of industrial automation, which requires maximum reactivity in capturing new trends, software has acquired an increasingly important weight. This is why we are exploring the potential of artificial intelligence, self-learning and vision, to be used on our packaging machines. And this is also why we continue to focus on human resources, through the inclusion of new qualified professional figures, investing in them with ongoing, specially suited internal training. As an example I cite that we recently created a prototyping plant with 3D printers for metal and plastic, with laser cutting and sheet metal forming machines. The project has achieved a twin objective: in addition to speeding up the construction of in-house prototypes, it allows us to update our technicians on new design standards and, consequently, on the most modern production technologies.

Recently, with the purchase of SEA Vision, you also entered into the world of software: is your goal to explore its potential in new sectors? Software in particular is a market projected towards the future, that offers us new opportunities in areas of application, in line with our traditional target market. What is more, digitalization is revolutionizing the entire industrial landscape, and is a fundamental knowhow, first and foremost in the applications for traceability and serialization of pharmaceuticals. But we see excellent prospects for software applications in other areas - food or cosmetics for example - where, even though legal obligations are less binding than with pharmaceuticals, digital tracking systems guarantee the authenticity of the products, their non-counterfeiting, their quality, and the “made in” aspect.

www.packmedia.net

I TA L I A N S T R AT E G I E S

Here might you not also implement training sessions for your subcontractors? Indeed this is something we have already done, inviting them to the new facilities to show them that there is a real opportunity of realising projects according to logics completely different from the past. We also want them to also become acquainted with and follow these evolutions, in order not to find ourselves forced to take supplementary measures. The objective, hence, is that of a coherent and extended development, which involves not only the company but also the supplier industry and the entire territory, to which Marchesini has always paid the utmost attention. And this is a challenge that not only involves us, but the entire Bologna packaging system, given that - and it is a well known fact - many companies “share” suppliers. And still within a view of the supply chain, we firmly corroborate a thesis put forward by Confindustria and reiterated on various occasions by Maurizio Marchesini himself: the subcontractor of a healthy, export-oriented company must obtain a creditworthiness comparable to that of its customer, since the former in actual fact constitutes a sort of extension of the latter.

www.packmedia.net

Hence skills and expertise are evermore a resource that needs to be preserved and fostered to enable growth... Certainly so. And it is a principle of attention that we also apply internally to safeguard our history and our culture. This is the starting point for the recent project concerning Rinova, a Group reality founded at the beginning of 2018, which deals with repairing, reconditioning and selling used machines. In fact, we realized that for Marchesini, producer of high quality and long-lasting packaging systems, the management of used machines could represent a business opportunity; there is indeed a significant range of users who, in not choosing a cheaper alternative and a lower technological level (perhaps Chinese), prefer a used and guaranteed top Italian brand machine. Rinova... innovates in this market, because it is independent, it has its own works, although not far from our Pianoro headquarters, and because it carries out a parallel and complementary activity, with working methods obviously different to those followed in the construction of new machines.

I suppose that, in this case, people capable of governing the “old” mechanical engineering are needed. An expertise that is becoming increasingly difficult to find, given the preponderance of mechatronics you might say… That’s right. And in fact it is no coincidence that in Rinova, we pair off younger human resources with those whom we call the “historical memory” of the company. Working side by side with expert operators on projects in which mechanics still has a part to play, is an important and decisive on-the-job training experience, which allows people to acquire a wealth of fundamental skills, which might prepare them for their subsequent entry into Marchesini. Marchesini, in short, becomes the champion of an intelligent “Italian way” of growth. Moreover, it should be remembered that you never succumbed to the collective delusion, which has led many companies to move production to China. We are proud of having resisted the temptation, and it was no mean thing, because China has been seen by many as the promised land. Indeed the phenomenon has caused serious damage to European companies. Chinese suppliers have actually learned how to produce some components with “made in EU” quality tolerance specifications, and have thus become dangerous competitors. But now that labor costs have grown there as well, transferring production to China is no longer really economically viable, as shown by the ongoing re-industrialization process underway. Indeed, only considering one’s immediate advantage can be dangerous, when you lose a more extensive view of things.

If current conditions are confirmed in the coming months of 2018, GIMA TT estimates revenues of more than 180 million euros and a gross operating profit (EBITDA) of about 75 million euros. In commenting on the Company’s results as of 30 June, Sergio Marzo, Chairman of GIMA TT, declared: The results achieved by the Company in the first six months confirm GIMA TT’s ability to continue creating innovation and value. The increase in revenues and profits was achieved thanks to growing demand for packaging lines from the tobacco industry. The size of the order book and the trend in

new orders acquired allow us to forecast a year of significant growth compared with 2017. This trend confirms the validity of the path that GIMA TT has undertaken in terms of both technological excellence and ability to respond to the needs of this market, with an increasingly innovative production range for the packaging of tobacco products and, in particular, the new generation of reducedrisk products. The agreement signed a few weeks ago in Beijing with Shanghai Tobacco Machinery Co. Rotoprint: virtuous example of circular economy They invest in the green economy, they are attentive to the issues of recovery and recycling, and at the same time they fight pollution and climate change, because their virtuous practices contribute to saving energy and avoiding CO2 emissions.

These are the Italian companies, small and large, that Enel and the Symbola Foundation have evaluated to cite them as an example in the “100 Italian circular economy stories report. Among the 100 Italian concerns - that include Eataly, Cariplo Foundation, Intesa San Paolo, Legambiente and many other prominent names - one has Rotoprint Sovrastampa: a family business founded in 1978 by Gian Carlo Arici who brought something unique to the market, a system that allows companies to fully recover their packaging stocks that cannot be used due to errors, defects, updates on labels ... which happens more often than you think.

Industrial pride and research. As stated by Giovanni Luca Arici, CEO of Rotoprint and son of the founder: ÂŤWhen, forty years ago, we invented our overprinting system with rotogravure machines, which allows us to intervene on packaging already printed with millimetric precision, there was still no mention of circular economy. The environmental awareness that exists today had not yet developed, but for us the concept of recovery was already central and the customers immediately rewarded us. Even today we are the only ones in Italy to be able to save unusable materials by overprinting, giving them a new life Âť. Suffice it to say that, in forty years of activity, Rotoprint has saved 950 thousand km of material from the landfill. This also means a huge amount less CO2 because, if you reuse the obsolete material, you also avoid producing new ones. The initial idea of Rotoprint has now four decades of history, but in the meantime the company has evolved with the technology and the needs of the market, because any overprinting is technically complex and always customised.

Today the company, as ever under the guidance of the Arici family, continues to update internally, focusing on environmental sustainability. The latest new feature in this direction is the introduction of water based colors in rotogravure printing processes. ÂŤWe are almost ready for this important milestoneÂť explains Arici. ÂŤWe have invested in research and study because water based colors are particularly difficult to handle and solvent inks are commonly used for rotogravure printing. Hence, in overprinting the technical problems are even greater. However, we believe that the competitiveness of Italian production plays on innovation, quality and sustainability. And once again we want to be the first to bring to our customers, in Italy and abroad, an important added valueÂť.

The residual debt of 25 million euros has been bullet rescheduled to 2022. The new industrial plan With a turnover of 140 million euros, Manucor has the largest production facility in the sector in Europe and its films are used by leading European food & beverage brands. Now Manucor can focus on the re-launch phase and return to growth. The new 2018-2022 business plan includes investments

of 15 million euros for the redevelopment of production capacity to support the improvement of the sales mix. The agreement marks another important milestone for the Pillarstone platform, which now manages around â‚Ź 2 billion in bank debt with over â‚Ź 200 million invested in 9 companies. Pillarstone invests longterm capital in companies with solid business models but with financial difficulties, which are supported by the experience of the Pillarstone team to help stabilize, grow and create value for all stakeholders. 4.0 vertical food packaging and weighing machines Among the companies recognized for reliability and international competence, for over twenty years Comek has been designing and building automatic weighing, packaging and wrapping systems. The latest developments in a range of machines, all dedicated to the food sector, on show at Ipack-Ima.

The extreme environmental conditions in food production companies (dairy, meat, frozen foods, filled pasta...) require robust, stainless steel, easily cleanable structures. For this purpose Comek has designed and manufactured the OMNYA EVO vertical packaging machine (1). Its new open frame in AISI 304 stainless steel, in addition to simplifying cleaning by eliminating profiles and areas where deposits can build up, also ensures excellent accessibility for maintenance,

quick release without tools for format change, replacement of the film tow straps and reel change. The horizontal box motion type welding unit, combined with sealing bars with special execution, enable high packaging performance to be obtained even with packaging materials that are difficult to heatseal.Further advantages of the machine are the servomotor power supply system in DC voltage bus with energy saving, the latest generation brushless servomotors with

COMEK SRL (Castiglione delle Stiviere, MN) designs and manufactures vertical, multi-head and linear weighing machines, as well as cup, auger and pneumatic volumetric dosers, plus automatic devices for inserting gadgets and fillingsealing-capping machines. Î possible to avoid contacts and overlap between products, with a steady rhythm that allows for the optimization of production capacity. Innovative packaging for companies and the end consumer The overwrapping and secondary packaging stages have also been carefully studied, given the strong correlation between these and the communication strategies of the client’s brand, the shelf placement and the material saving. The primary packaging line Sitma 8002 can be connected to a pizza cartoning machine and, after that, an end-of-line system for the stacking of cartons and the packaging of the piles.

Compared to the previous series, one of the main innovations in Sitma 8002 is the option of wrapping pizzas directly inside a special multilayer film, getting rid of the cartoning stage, thanks to a special air welder. Another innovative feature that makes Sitma 8002 truly unique is the option of welding in a lateral position, which enables the packaging surface to be kept clean and easily readable, to allow for better branding and communication. Thanks to this system, the weight and volume of the packaging can also be reduced, which can lead to significant savings for the end customer. This is because such characteristics enable the streamlining of the product’s distribution and storage throughout the supply chain. Finally, the end user can also benefit in all phases from transportation to freezer storage, up to the packaging disposal stage.

Falcon™ X4 mobile computer Error-free labeling on cans with In-Sight Cognex Corporation (systems and products for machine vision and barcode reading) has provided the US system integrator Matrix Technologies, specialized in the engineering of automated production lines, with the In-Sight vision system for perfecting the process of labeling bright or reflective containers in the food and beverage industry. New approach to inspection Taking advantage of recent advances in vision system technology, Matrix Technologies has developed a specific approach to automatic inspection of luminous fields and reflective areas, developing a Brightfield Microscopy Inspection Solution (so called because light or reflective metal can create a bright background that makes characters difficult to read), based on vision system that reads the product code comprising the characters printed on the package and matches it to the Universal Product Code (UPC) barcode on the label. A reminder that labeling lines operate on hundreds of thousands of cans at an average speed of 1,000 pieces per minute, so the challenge is to find the incorrectly labeled can amidst the onrush; the manufacturer is held responsible for the incorrect labeling of a product.

40 • 1/2018 - selection

The solution lies in the Cognex In-Sight vision system, capable of inspecting product codes on the bright reflective background of cans at a rate of 1,000 products per minute. Rather than reading individual characters, the application is configured to search for an image that matches the product code. In this sense, the Cognex “pattern matching” tool named PatMax is simpler, more rugged and more efficient as well as more economical compared to other systems. Summing up, the operation of corresponding product code images has proved to be a much more reliable solution than, say, trying to convert images into fonts, and the personnel attending the system are able to maintain and program the equipment to read new product codes without any difficulty.

A world leader in the fields of automatic data acquisition and industrial automation, Datalogic launches the new Falcon™ X4 mobile computer. With a CPU about three times faster than its predecessor, it is the new solution proposed by the Bologna-based company to manage logistics activities with maximum efficiency (back office inventory management, shipping/receiving, picking, rolling inventory, etc ...). A valid aid also for the retail sector, it facilitate shelf replenishment, price verification, stocktaking and order entry.Falcon X4 offers significant advantages in terms of user experience: ergonomics, intuitive user interface, computing and data acquisition capabilities, combined with exceptional robustness, are unlikely to be the same in other products of the same category available on the market. Lastly we cite the machine’s excellent quality/cost effectiveness ratio.

Despite being a new player within the United States market, Galdi has already made several installations on the North American territory. Galdi filling machines have been installed in California, Colorado, Nebraska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The Cumberland Dairy case Relations with Cumberland Dairy began in 2013 when Carmine Catalana, president of the US company, visited the Galdi booth during the Chicago International Dairy Show. In 2015, the interest

in the solutions proposed by the Italian manufacturer had a concrete outcome, with the purchase of the RG270UCS filler for ESL products. Focusing on transparency, guaranteeing minimum lead time and competitive costs, Galdi has managed to win the trust of the historic East Coast company, which in 2016 bought a second machine, confirming the positive development of the collaboration. As Rachele Catalana, Quality and Operations Manager of the company tells us: «We were happy with the purchase of our first machine, but we asked ourselves: Galdi is

very well known and appreciated in Europe and Russia ... will it be able to give us the same support in the United States? After a period of time, we no longer have any doubts about it ». The Delaware Service Center Encouraged by the partnership with Cumberland Dairy, in 2015 Galdi opened a service center dedicated to the American market in Delaware. Thanks to the presence of senior on-site technicians and spare parts warehouse in New Jersey, the company can thus guarantee minimum intervention times and dedicated assistance right across the continent.

ClearSkinPack™ Coextruded Polyethylene, barrier up to 7 layers, is a very light food packaging, although it is highly protective as a second skin, to extend the shelf life of the product and save costs. It seals either on trays which are laminated with PE (liner), on monomaterial trays (APET, PP, PS and PVC), or on cardboard, for a total recyclability. It is easy to open, enables the perfect separation of the different packaging components, and printable with both traditional and digital technologies. ClearLidPack™ is a top thin film for trays in MAP (Modified Atmosphere

Packaging), made of coextruded polyolefinic resins of up to 7 layers. It does not require further lamination to bi-oriented supports. Very light, it has a maximum thickness of 25 μm, is printable with traditional or digital technologies. Its antifog and high barrier against oxygen properties do not compromise its excellent properties of brightness and transparency. Combioflex are bioplastic films that contain raw materials from renewable sources and are totally compostable according to EN13432 (corresponding to ASTM D6400) with a new

barrier version to oxygen and gasses. These films can be laminated to other compostable materials or paper, or used as a monofilm. With an excellent transparency, they are also printable with compostable inks. Pack Ready Lamination (in collaboration with HP Indigo) A new coextruded film with high performance in term of adhesion to bioriented films printed by HP Indigo digital press. No need for adhesives and no cure time. When these films are thermal-laminated to PE, the final package is totally recyclable.

G2 was founded at the end of the 60’s when Bologna already was, as it still is, the centre of excellence in automatic machine development and production, fully deserving its title of packaging valley. The company, originally established as a start-up, has today become a multinational, world-wide leader in the production of capsule fillers, solid and liquid pharmaceutical product capsule filling solutions, automatic machines for packaging and end-of -line, with a production paradigm which has remained unchanged over the years, based on reliability, quality, accuracy and production efficiency. MG2 is the result of the innovative approach of Sig. Ernesto Gamberini, renowned then and now as a brilliant and passionate automatic machine designer, who at the time the company was founded, in cooperation with other young partners, believed he could revolutionize the industry by placing the onus on efficacy and flexibility. This revolutionary approach became MG2’s driving force over the decades, in 50 years transforming the company, now headed by the third generation of the Gamberini family, into a concern with not only solid local roots, but with an equally strong international calling, also thanks to its by now historical and active presence on the US market through MG America. MG2’s American sister company, that controls the US market thanks also to its direct contact with the customer, recently celebrated its 30 years of activity. With a total turnover exceeding 30 million Euro in 2017, and thanks to its complete range of products, MG2 represents the perfect partner, that has been capable for more than 50 years of guaranteeing reliability, productivity, accuracy and ongoing product innovation during all production steps, from R&D to end-of-line.
