nce upon a time there was the “Ethical Packaging Charter - Shared principles for the conscious design, production and use of packaging”, that is the thoughtful decalogue presented in 2015 to open a debate between all the players in the production and distribution chain and among citizens/consumers. The document, drawn up by the Department of Design, Milan Polytechnic (scientific directors: Professors Giovanni Baule and Valeria Bucchetti), desired and promoted by Edizioni Dativo - ItaliaImballaggio, and sponsored by the Italian Packaging Institute, was presented on 22 May 2015 during the Ipack-Ima trade fair. Well, that project, which aimed to make packaging evolve with respect to the needs of the user, the consumer, the environment and society, is now renewed and takes on a different connotation and more concrete prospects.

At the time, the idea of promoting a new culture of packaging might have seemed ahead of its time, particularly because of its explicit reference to ethics, or rather to the need for a code of conduct on the part of the industry and those working in it, but today all this seems more topical than ever, if not urgent, in the light of the evolution of the market.

One cannot give up hope. At a time when politicians are struggling to come up with alternatives, only the will of individuals, or rather groups of individuals, can set in motion effective processes of change. Thus, on 29 May 2020, during the first lockdown, the Ethical Packaging Charter Foundation was born: Anna Paola Cavanna, president of the Italian Packaging Institute, signed its memorandum.

«I strongly supported, and in perfect harmony with the director of the Italian Packaging Institute Francesco Legrenzi, the birth of the Foundation, of which I have taken on the chairmanship, to make explicit the key words and arguments contained in the ten points of the Ethical Charter and to translate them into concrete facts» Cavanna told me. Facts and not (just) words. As President of the III, Anna Paola Cavanna has already shown she knows how to do things. And how! In less than three years of office, she has achieved a robust increase in the number of member companies, thanks to the expansion of the services provided. And now with the Foundation she is ready to work on several fronts, such as project in the training and cultural sphere (for instance the Advanced Training Course – CAF in Packaging Management, in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics of Rome’s La Sapienza University, or the Foundation’s Algorithm, a dossier which will soon provide companies with a valuable scientific tool for calculating the sustainability of packaging starting from the 10 points of the Charter, correlating them with the 17 objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda). A project open to all. The Ethical Packaging Charter Foundation also plans to carry out research and international awards, as well as organising initiatives with the aim of promoting the entire packaging chain, without distinguishing between the various materials. «To achieve these goals, we need the support of all those involved in the design, production, use, consumption and reuse of packaging. Companies, enterprises, bodies, associations, consortia and foundations can, among other things, contribute in a practical way to affirming an ethical and sustainable business culture for the packaging chain, by signing and adhering to the Charter as Ambassadors. And these figures are decisive, since the Ambassadors undertake to operate in line with the ten points of the Charter, to disseminate it as appropriate, to promote its values and contents. Applications for membership are open; till now, the Foundation’s board of directors has accepted the applications of the first “Ambassadors”, signed by Acimga, Cellografica Gerosa, Contital, Corapack, Laminati Cavanna, Pack Media, Warrant Hub and Coop Italia. In short, judging from the enthusiasm of all those who are working on this initiative and from what can be read on the website “fondazionecartaeticapackaging.org” (well done, clear and incisive), the Foundation is a worthy initiative from all points of view. Proof that packaging is a living thing, made up of women and men capable of facing the present by influencing the birth of events, in order to dream of a future that is better.

Giovanni Ronzoni: architect, artist, poet Ronzoni was born on December 5, 1952 in Lissone (MB). Between photography, poetry, sculpture and painting, he has created works in which the paper is content and container, subject and object, flat surface in search of the third dimension through folds, gashes and color interventions with unexpected formal/ plastic results. The most recent works of the series “Memories” derive from extreme synthesis of “language” and “zeroing by subtraction”, which combines the concept of poignancy with that of lightness and simplicity. He has received numerous awards and national and international first prizes, is present in group and solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad: recently at the Venice Biennale on the island of San Servolo, the Biennale of Contemporary Art of the Murgia “Environment-Memory-Future”. ECO-DESIGN: THE CONAI COMPETITION - episode 3

Called upon to join the jury that will have to analyze the 319 products entered in the 2021 edition of the CONAI Call for Proposals and declare the winners, Barbara del Curto* talks about the new awareness of the industry in designing sustainable packaging. In addition to establishing the rules of less environmental impact, among their priorities are the analysis of the end of life of a packaging, the methods of collection and recycling, as well as new ways to make consumers more aware.

A

s a juror of the CONAI Call, how would you describe the trend you have seen in the “sustainable” behaviors of companies in recent years? In what directions are they moving, when they review their packaging in an eco-design key? The really interesting trends emerge when companies that approach the topic of sustainability understand that it is not just a marketing choice, but a lever to make innovation. Being sustainable, therefore, ceases to be a limit or an obligation to be fulfilled, but a starting point. Many companies, over the years, have begun this journey by replacing one material with another. This is not always the right choice: sometimes replacing a material, such as plastic, is not enough if the impact of a product throughout its lifecycle is not fully assessed. It must be said that, especially in more recent years, many companies are realizing this. They’re committing to doing broader assessments of the overall impact of what they sell, starting with an awareness of what the end-oflife of their packaging may be: it’s essential if they really want to know what impact a product may have on the environment. With this in mind, I want to add another thought: there is a growing awareness that sustainable is not synonymous with “poor” or “sad”. The search for packaging solutions with lower environmental impacts can also bring beautiful and definitely practical innovations!

èHas any type of innovation struck you in particular? Over the past few years, we’ve seen companies focus on several interesting aspects. For example, many have chosen to work on the sleeve of bottles or flasks, making it detachable. This may seem like an insignificant intervention, but it’s a very smart design change, because separating the packaging from its cover label makes it easier to recycle both. Then let’s think about the recent introduction of the cap on plastic bottles that remains attached to the ring joined to the neck of the bottle: if attention is paid to hygiene, this is a great innovation that helps not to disperse the caps for recycling. I am also reminded of the Sprite brand which renounces the iconic green color of

its bottle by opting for a bottle made of transparent plastic, which can be more easily recycled. In short, the focus is shifting from the substitution of the material to the recyclability of the material itself: after all, a truly sustainable design can take place only if the recycling processes and the difficulties that can hinder them are well known. èOn which research and development activities is the business world of our country oriented today to make its packaging more and more sustainable? Companies are increasingly interested in investigating the end of life of a packaging and in knowing the processes that lead to recycling it. We can see this, for example, if we think of polylaminates: there is more and more attention to give the consumer the possibility to separate different materials in order to confer them separately in segregated collection. I believe that the business world is also increasingly thinking about the possibility and the ways to reduce both the

quantity and the complexity of the materials used for packaging. èWhat are the criteria to be followed in choosing the packaging material according to its content? How important is this binomial container-content? I would answer by bringing some examples. In the food industry, the aspect of protection is fundamental: packaging must act as a barrier to avoid contamination and waste. Let’s not forget how food that, in some regions, still ends up in landfills produces more CO2 than the equivalent produced during the lifecycle of the plastic film used to preserve it. Other packs, on the other hand, must have particular characteristics in terms of

opening: those of detergents, for example, must be safe so that children cannot open them, while those of medicines must be easy to handle, even for categories such as the elderly with reduced mobility or those who have difficulty using their hands. So understanding what a package will contain is fundamental! Sustainability must be environmental and social at the same time, facilitating consumption for vulnerable users. èGiven the strong attention paid to environmental issues, as a university professor, what new frontiers do you think Italian companies will have to overcome? Let’s start with a very topical issue: e-commerce. It will continue to grow, those who started to shop online during the lockdown or red zone months will continue to do so. It’s a new world that needs suitable materials for its packs: it’s necessary to understand how to make them increasingly sustainable. Also of great interest is the world of digital information delivery: QRcodes and similar tools allow the origin of products to be traced with increasing ease, and not only in the food and wine sector. Companies cannot ignore this, because consumers are more and more interested in knowing the production chain of what they buy and they expect to have the tools to do it. Finally, I believe that the corporate world must commit itself to overcoming soon the paradigm that is guided only by marketing and

therefore imposes on the market the choices preferred by consumers: consumers must be trained and made aware by providing them with the information to be able to make correct purchasing choices. They must therefore be able to understand that one package has a greater environmental impact than another. So, to give an example, companies can no longer afford to choose black trays just because they are more stylish and consumers prefer them. Companies need to find a way to tell shoppers that black trays are harder to recycle because at waste facilities, on the black conveyor belt, the optical reader doesn’t recognize them: in this way, customer tastes can become more conscious and, cascadingly, sustainable.

The Neverending Palette CIRCULARITY AND HIGH RANGE What is the life cycle of a cosmetic? And more... is it possible to recover the materials that compose it? These are extremely topical questions, to which Sana, Cosmofarma and Cosmoprof, together with the Italian cosmetics industry, provided a concrete answer with The Neverending Palette: the story of how a make-up product is born and lives again.

ow that issues such as circularity and sustainability of materials, actions and production processes are central both upstream and downstream in the life of a beauty product, the three events Sana, Cosmofarma and Cosmoprof are focusing their attention on this theme. In fact, with the support of the made in Italy cosmetics supply chain, they have supported The Neverending Palette project, which translates concepts into concrete evidence of an approach that is increasingly perceived as essential as well as transversal to the entire beauty world, both in terms of creative development and industrialization, as well as in relation to consumer perception. A product that looks to the future. Each component of the eye make-up palette created ad hoc for this project has been selected to trigger

The project, whose creative direction has been entrusted to Omar Pallante of AVP ArteVetrinaProject, has as its protagonists - in addition to the institutional realities already mentioned and Hera SpA - some partners of excellence in the reference chain, with the precise aim of making tangible a product projected towards a shared future and sharable in terms of both design and production. The bet? To reinvent, without neglecting the haut de gamme appeal and contemporaneity - the formula is vegan - a product that today is often multi-material, difficult to recycle and does not derive from a circular economy. The conscious choice of alternative materials and processes, on the other hand, means looking at the world

from a different perspective. And suggesting these possibilities, reading one’s own time and anticipating trends, is at the heart of every exhibition. Leaving a mark. To seal the commitment to a perpetual - never-ending - dialogue between man and the environment, the symbol of infinity integrated with the graphic sign of communication, taken up both in the palette itself and in the installation of the same name that, from September 9 to 12 at SANA 2021, will visually and spatially support the reading of the project. Planned inside the new Pav. 37 of the Bologna fairgrounds that has hosted the event, the installation have welcomed all guests by narrating the four life cycles of the product through the combination of organic shapes and transparencies. As many spatial sections of the exhibition area were dedicated to packaging, production, collection and recycling - consequential moments in the life cycle of the palette - in which the various focuses and the contribution to the initiative of the individual partners has been be explored.

he 2021 edition of the Best Packaging Oscar will certainly be remembered for a decisive stance on the ethical and sustainable value of innovation in packaging: the conceptual core of the contest, in fact, it has guided companies on a path of development from which it is now impossible to shift from. This is, after all, the basic thought that the Ethical Charter of Packaging Foundation wanted to share and disseminate by supporting the contest, on the strength of the 10 principles of

the Ethical Packaging Charter. These same principles will correspond to 10 prizes, assigned by a technical jury to the packaging deemed worthy because it is Responsible, Balanced, Safe, Accessible, Transparent, Informative, Contemporary, Forward-looking, Educational and Sustainable. We would like to remind you that this year the contest is once again supported by Altroconsumo, Brera Design District, Conai, the Milan Polytechnic and Ipack-Ima 2022, in the role of main partner.

A journey through values and projects. The exhibition “Best Packaging 2021, a journey through values and projects”, was on display in Milan from 4 to 10 September 2021. The installation, hosted by the Mimmo Scognamiglio Arte Contemporanea Gallery in the Brera Design District during the Fuorisalone, was composed of two complementary entities: the representation of the world of the values of the Ethical Charter of Packaging through the imaginative language of Claudio Bonoldi’s stop motion shots and videos, and the real, actual, packaging, finalists of the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio contest.

Monoclip hangar for Men’s/ Women’s underwear under the Coop brand that, with a simple manual adaptation, allows consumers to reuse it as a hanger or pincer/clip. It’s produced with plastic material from the recycling of industrial waste (70% from industrial regeneration and 30% from internal scrap). Thanks to the attention paid to eco-design, the shape of the hanger has been modified to reduce weight and bulk. The hangar is reusable at home: a double-sided tag is placed on the product label, providing a simple explanation of the reuse mechanism through intuitive text and graphics, generating immediate interaction. The hanger has been designed in plastic material coming from the recovery of industrial waste, with a design that guarantees reduced dimensions, in particular, with respect to the lateral encumbrance (about 20% less) and 27% less weight, benefits that translate into an optimization of transport logistics. The possibility of reusing the hanger then removes it from the disposal circuit, saving on its management as packaging waste.

Since 2018, the Research, Innovation and Packaging Development experts at [comfort zone] have been working to optimize the primary packaging of the best-selling references of its Sublime skin, Hydramemory, Remedy and Renight facial lines. In this case the objective was to reduce the weight of the jar and use a quota of recycled material, while maintaining the same aesthetic appeal and functional performance as the virgin material, and the same safety, usability and aesthetics of the packaging itself. Compared to the previous version, the weight of the jar has decreased from 115 g to 98 g, with a raw material saving of 14.7% (17 g). Also the PP cap now weighs less (from 10g to 7g). The use of water-based in place of solvent-based coatings has a lower environmental impact. The materials used are glass with 42.6% post-consumer recycled glass, for the Jar; for the cap PP, Polespan (PE); Safeguard (PS); biobased PE (from sugar cane) for the labels; FSC certified recycled paper, for the case. The packaging components are easily separable and can therefore be channelled into the correct material collection and recycling flow, thus enabling a virtuous end-of-life. The project also allowed to optimize logistics and reduce the environmental impact related to incoming transport, with the shift of the production of the vase from Asia to Europe.

Realized by Ferrero’s in-house design team for a pilot project in collaboration with Loop and Carrefour in France, Reusable Nutella Jar is a reusable 750 gr jar. With this collaboration, Ferrero is experimenting the adoption of circular economy solutions, as can be seen from the steps of the project: Shop & Use, Return and Clean-RefillReuse. Consumers buy the Nutella jar in Carrefour pilot stores and on the website, paying a deposit. Once the product has been consumed, the customer can return the empty jar to the Carrefour store and get a re-

fund of the deposit. Loop ensures that returned jars are collected, shifted and cleaned. The cleaned jar is returned to Ferrero to be refilled and then repurchased by the next consumer. Each can is therefore reused several times. The development of the special embossed image on the front of the glass jar made it possible not to use the paper label, thus underlining the uniqueness of the project with a particular design. An optimized label, containing nutritional and other essential information, is instead placed on the back of the jar and can be easily removed during the pre-washing process, thus removing glue residues from the glass. Finally, a guarantee seal is applied to the rim of the jar using an induction welding system: this also avoids glue residues and makes it easier to wash the jars.

Recyflex® PE is a line of recyclable packaging for the packaging of food and non-food products. In particular, the “Recyflex® PE mozzarella” entered in the competition is a product developed for packaging in the presence of liquids and can be machined on form-fill-seal packaging machines (tested with Galbani). The objective of the project to replace a traditionally multi-material packaging with a mono-polymer recyclable pack with the same performance of machinability and protection of the content. The material chosen as the basis of the packaging is polyethylene, as its collection, sorting and recycling flow is the most developed currently in Europe. The laminate was designed in accordance with the most current “design for recycling” guidelines (CEFLEX, RECYCLASS). The recyclability of the product has been certified with the Recyclass protocol by an accredited third party, obtaining a rating of 94% and a Recyclability Class B, which attests to the possibility of re-introducing the recycled material into a closed-loop scheme (circular economy).

Ge0 Pack RESPONSIBLE | EQUILIBRATED | SAFE | ACCESSIBLE | FORWARD-LOOKING

“Zero waste” in the packaging of food products with the recyclable packaging Ge0 Pack, whose eventual residues in the recycling stream are completely biodegradable, so as not to create waste. Thanks to the materials made with patented systems, it guarantees a reduction of over 56% of plastic and 15% of CO2 emissions. Ge0 Pack is intended for applications in the confectionary sector, it is used on Galbusera’s BelleBuone line. It is made with polycarbonate consisting of semi-transparent FSC paper with barrier properties and a special fossil-sourced polypropylene that, thanks to an enzymatic addition technology, biodegrades after a set service time (28 months) and does not require dedicated composting facilities. Inks and adhesives are also biodegradable. The semi-transparent paper which allows the vision of the

product - is equipped with an invisible code (StealthCode technology by BeeGraphic) that makes the pack interactive and connects it to a mobile device thanks to a free app. The materials chosen do not affect yield and industrial machinability. Paper from renewable sources is compatible with current recycling systems and guarantees the parameters for the application of modified atmosphere for the preservation of the product. PP is added with prebiotic enzymes that, after the established service time and exposed to natural environmental conditions, activate and degrade the polymer chains that make up the plastic until they are transformed into mass, CO2 and water, allowing it to return to nature. Studies conducted by third parties have shown that there is no release of microplastics and that it is not an oxo-degradable plastic.

Gualapack Tethered CAP, for faby food, drinks and snacks, has been designed following the proposals of the Single Use Plastic directive (in force since 2024), whose main objective is the reduction of single-use plastic waste in the environment. The cap is made up of three essential parts: Core (sealing system inside, design development outside), Ring (ring that hooks the cap onto the straw and which, coupled with Core, acts as a tamper-proof system) and lanyard (junction area between the two parts, which allows the cap to remain attached to the straw). In the various designs created, we distinguish: anti-suffocation versions and a smaller, more economical version.

Pouch5 RESPONSIBLE | EQUILIBRATED | SAFE | INFORMATIVE

Pouch5 is the first flexible packaging with high performance spout for food use (fruit purees, yoghurt, baby food, juices, or flavored waters), suitable for hot filling with pasteurization, cold filling; sterilization applications are under development. Pouch5 is made in polypropylene mono-material, PP >90%, multilayer polylaminate high barrier to oxygen and water vapor. Designed to be recycled in the PP chain, Pouch5 is correctly recognized by infrared readers in sorting plants. Pouch5 applies the same technologies as the typical multilayer PP in the world of food packaging, but replaces the traditional raw materials (PET, Aluminium, OPA and PE) with three layers of BOPP, OPP and PP: printing layer, intermediate layer with a high barrier against oxygen and humidity, and sealing layer in contact with the product. EUMAKEIT is an upcycling design project based on the functional reuse of the primary and secondary packaging of the EUMAKERS spool (patented) for PLA filaments through multicomponent design and integration with 3D printing technology. The goal is to define a zero impact product, reconverting waste into functional objects: from a single EUMAKERS spool it is possible to obtain up to 11 EUMAKEIT design objects, in regenerated and biodegradable material. The models in the eumakeit collection are 3D printed (additive manufacturing), a technology that, by definition, does not produce waste or scrap, optimizing the use of raw materials. Materials used: - biodegradable, compostable, non-toxic and odorless PLA, virgin and/or regenerated, available in the form of filament for 3D printers in over 100 colors and used to create design objects of the eumakeit collection; - the multi-component spool on which the filament is wound [primary packaging] is made of polystyrene and polycarbonate; - cardboard is used for spool packaging and multi-item shipments.

The Ecosustainable Liquid Absorbing Tray - Vale is patented for fresh or frozen food products, and is made of compostable paper material. Thanks to a perforated upper layer and an absorbent one underneath, the liquids released from meat, fish or vegetables are captured and retained inside the tray itself. Biotape adhesive tape is made with raw materials from renewable resources of plant origin (PP derived from tall oil, obtained from the extraction of cellulose present in wood waste). “Green”, bio-renewable and food-compliant inks From Sun Chemical, the range of SunVisto Aquagreen inks for food packaging, produced with a high percentage of raw material from vegetable sources. The high bio-renewable content (BRC) is proven by carbon isotope C14 analysis. As a manufacturer of inks - an integral part of the finished packaging that has a significant impact on its characteristics - Sun Chemical has always paid the utmost attention to sustainability issues, and is strongly committed to developing and promoting low environmental impact solutions that are widely used in many applications in the packaging industry. Among the eco-friendly proposals, there is the series of bio-renewable water-based inks, SunVisto Aquagreen, whose formulation contains a high quantity of raw materials obtained from renewable vegetable sources instead of petrochemical-based inks of fossil origin. These inks are, in fact, made up of a significant part of vegetable-derived resins (starch, sugars, by-products of cereal production...) and are indicated for food packaging that is more natural, cleaner and more ecological. Bio-Renewable Content (BRC), test-proven The percentage of bio-renewable material present in

inks and coatings can be found by carbon isotope fractionation analysis. The presence of the C14 isotope of carbon in biologically-derived material - which is not contained in fossil material - allows the amount of plant-sourced carbon in the ink to be measured and thus yields the percentage of renewable carbon to total solids (BRC). The analysis complies with ASTM D6866-18 Method B. Sustainability and high performance in many application areas In addition to containing a high amount of bio-renewable resin, SunVisto Aquagreen inks - TUV Austria “OK compost HOME” and “OK compost INDUSTRIAL” certified - are suitable for printing compostable packaging. The different formulations available allow to cover a wide range of packaging applications, both in paper and in treated plastic films. During printing they have good drying speed and high resolubility. Prints resist well to dry rubbing and abrasion. Aquagreen inks can, for example, be used to print various types of packaging, including sandwich boxes and wrappers, small take-away packages, bags, paper cups for hot and cold drinks, food wrapping paper, paper and bio-film shopping bags.

Gentlebrand for Arax vodka Creativity and know-how in the bottle The renowned Armenian vodka Arax originates from an infusion of tarragon, an aromatic herb that, together with local mineral waters, constitutes the key element of the precious distillate. With a view to expansion on a global scale, the brand produced by F54 has decided to completely revise its image, entrusting Gentlebrand with the creation of a packaging with distinctive shapes and design, in line with the premium positioning of the product. Made of frosted glass, the bottle seems to have been sculpted in ice, conveying the sensation of a fresh distillate ready to be served. Four-monthly observatory of the packaging supply chain: situation updated to September 2021 Barbara Iascone

T

his report provides a cross-section of the trend of the manufacturing industry sectors where the consumption of packaging is most intense - and their consequent evolution divided into food and non-food macro-areas. The evolutionary frameworks of the manufacturing sectors have been taken from sector analyses elaborated by trade associations, the databank of the Italian Packaging Institute or Prometeia. In general, we can say that the sectors that, even at the beginning of the pandemic, registered positive inputs (food and beverages, FMCG, pharmaceuticals), now reveal a physiological slowdown. Other sectors that were hardest hit during the same period are currently registering a more energetic recovery; this is the case of the construction area and its allied industries (intermediates, furniture, etc.). It is interesting to analyze, sector by sector, how much the Italian manufacturing industry has recovered compared to the pre-covid period, comparing the trends of the period January-May 2021 with the period January-May 2019. It should be noted that both food and FMCG were affected by changes in purchasing habits in times of pandemic: once the so-called “stock effect” of the period of greatest restrictions (with the accumulation of pasta, flours, canned food, household cleaning products) vanished, the purchasing trend returned to normal. Food industry (food and beverages). As previously mentioned, this is among the areas of production that was least affected by the negative effects of the pandemic. constraints on the entire Ho.Re.Ca sector, the sector registered a recovery, compared with the pre-covid period, of +3.6%. FMCG. This sector encompasses all goods for domestic use that are commonly purchased from largescale retail outlets, from food products to personal and household care, through to “semi-durable” goods (clothing, books and newspapers, etc.). In short, it is a vast area with “extensive use” of packaging. Here the gap between 2019 and 2021 is negative (the trend in 2021 is -1.6% compared to the same period in 2019). Pharmaceutical sector. After registering positive rates even during the lockdown - the only manufacturing sector to do so - the sector experienced a natural slowdown, up to reaching stability. If we compare the period January-May 2021 with that of 2019, the gap turns out to be +0.4%. Construction supply chain. Thanks to government incentives and the newfound interest in the home environment due to the months of forced confinement, this macro area has given an important boost to the recovery of manufacturing. The “furniture and furnishings” sector alone led to a recovery of +11.3%, while the household appliances sector registered +25.7%. Also significant was the recovery from the pre-COVID period for building materials (+9.6%), and chemical intermediates also performed well (+11.7%). Fashion sector. Still in difficulty, the fashion system is among the few that has not yet recovered (- 13%). Cosmetics and perfumery. Hit hard in 2020, we are witnessing a significant recovery of the sector in the first half of 2021, with a registered growth of 8%.

General economic picture

After the crisis registered in 2020, the global and obviously national economic situation is reawakening. The recovery hypotheses mentioned at the beginning of 2021 are slowly coming true and Italian manufacturing is driving the recovery not only nationally but also at a European level. The World Bank, in June 2021, raised its GDP estimates for the year from 4.1% to 5.6%. The USA and China are leading the recovery and are expected to register +6.8% and +8.5% respectively. However, it must be stressed that the pandemic continues to create disastrous situations, including from an economic point of view, in developing countries. At European level, the second half of the year closed with a 2% increase in GDP (19-country Eurozone), which stands at 1.9% for the 27-member Europe. With GDP growing by 2.7%, Italy registered an excellent performance: second only to Spain (+2.8%), and better than Germany (+1.5%, averting the crisis at the beginning of the year) as well as France (stable at +0.1%: an important achievement given the negative trend registered in the previous quarter). According to Confindustria. The latest surveys provided by the Confindustria (Confederation of Italian Industry) research center in September show that, despite some critical issues (shortages of certain raw and semi-finished materials, resumption of contagion), macroeconomic indicators are holding up, also maintaining the positive trends of the second quarter in the third quarter. In fact, the consumption of Italian families has returned to growth (+5%); thanks to the slowdown of the pandemic, the spread of vaccines and the less severe measures on the movement of people. Travel has also resumed: Italians have anyway preferred staying in the Bel Paese, rather than traveling abroad. In the third quarter of 2021 industry slowed down while services accelerated. In fact, industrial production has felt the scarcity of productive demand, while services have felt the positive effect of tourism, the same as consumption. According to Prometeia. In the first part of 2021 the Italian manufacturing industry managed to make up most of the losses registered in 2020, i.e. in the worst period of the crisis. The trend registered between January and May 2021 (although it is an absolutely partial figure compared to the whole year) is close to +25%. The recovery of exports, which are growing at a better rate than other European countries, is certainly helping Italian manufacturing activity. Italian exports in the period January-April grew by +4%, while in France and Germany they fell by a -6.7% and -1.4%, respectively. In the coming months there could be a slowdown due to a rise in supply costs, which could erode profitability margins and negatively affect the turnover trend of the manufacturing industry. è

The packaging sector At the time of writing this analysis, the final figures for 2020 can be communicated.

I

n the estimates released in the previous months we rated a sector with losses of around 3%; in the final balance we can state that things have gone better than that. In 2020, the production of packaging (including MSW bags) expressed by weight should settle at around 16,620 t/000, marking a decline of around -1.7% compared to 2019. Turnover, which is expected to be around 33 billion euros, is down by around 2.8%. Contributing to reducing the losses is the performance of the sectors with the greatest use of packaging; in fact, in some areas of manufacturing, the demand for packaging has not fallen considerably. Analyzing the various materials, the positive trends of rigid laminated packaging with a prevalence of paper as well as steel packaging stand out, where production grew by +6% and +3.5% respectively. For both these types of packaging, the more than good performance of the food preserve sector has indeed been crucial. Paper and cardboard packaging also registered an upswing: production expressed in tons grew by 1.1%. The production of plastic packaging showed a

drop (-3%), a trend largely influenced by the -4% in the production of flexible packaging. Rigid plastic packaging, bottles and flacons, were in fact seen to be substantially stable. Foreign trade showed downtrends both in exports (-2.7%) and imports (-2.8%). The trade balance remains positive: with a value of approximately 763,000 tons, Italy continues to export more than she imports. The commitment to adopt sustainable packaging declared on product labels convinces Italian consumers, leading to an increase in sales. This is confirmed by the data collected by the eighth edition of the Immagino Observatory of GS1 Italy, of which we report an extract.

GREEN CLAIM on the label T

he survey carried out by the Immagino Observatory (which examines the period between June 2019 and June 2020) highlighted how, among the various types of messages that recur in packaging communication, the claims relating to the reduction of environmental impact on the labels of more than 24,000 products have influenced the purchase choices of consumers. In particular, the aspects associated with packaging sustainability have a fundamental place in the communication of brands, with a twofold purpose: on the one hand, to signal the commitment of companies to rethink the packaging of products in an eco-compatible way, and on the other, to help consumers to correctly dispose of it under segregated waste collection after use. By examining in detail the different types of claims relating to the sustainability of packaging, significant trends can be highlighted. Compostable packaging. Products that make this claim show the most substantial growth in sales with a 54.4% increase in sell-out, and appear to be increasingly widespread in many categories of the food sector, such as ice cream in tubs, disposable table accessories, ground coffee and cheese. Packaging with “less plastic”. A double-digit increase (+29.5%) in the sell-out of products bearing this message, which is especially widespread among washing machine detergents and personal care products. Packaging made “with recycled material”. There has been a strong increase in the offer (+29.9%) of products whose claim states the intention to save resources and which have seen a 6.9% increase in turnover, particularly

with regard to shampoos, laundry and washing machine detergents, dishwasher detergents and garbage bags. Recyclable packaging... and where to dispose of it. Analysing sales figures (pondered according to the composition of the “average” supermarket trolley), the Immagino Observatory found that 47.3% of the more than 21 billion units sold can be attributed to 28.2% of products that communicate recyclability of packaging on the label: in June 2020, products with this indication saw a 2.8% increase in units sold. At the same time, for the second year in a row, the sell-out of products that do not communicate this indication fell (-1.0%). However, although the sell-out of these products increased by almost 3% in absolute terms, their incidence remains relatively low: in fact, considering the 115,429 FMCG products surveyed in this edition of the Immagino Observatory, only 28.2% of them (about 32,500) indicated on the label the recyclability of the packaging, by means of pictograms or symbols such as the voluntary labeling system proposed by Conai, the chasing arrows (the triangle with the arrows chasing each other, accompanied by a number and a specific acronym for each material) or the green dot. In contrast, therefore, 71.8% of products on the shelf do not specify how to dispose of the

packaging. This does not mean that the packaging is not actually recyclable - on the contrary, 6.4% of the same are fully recyclable, 76.2% for the most part - only that the information has not been made explicit on the label.

Brazil and CE: regulatory convergences and specificities The latest edition of NR 12 in June 2019 has brought the Brazilian regulatory landscape much closer to the European one, both in terms of design and manufacture of industrial machinery. It is also important to keep in mind that the main document contained within a Laudo De Validação according to NR 12 consists of the risk analysis which today, unlike in the past, can be fully accepted if it is based on the ISO 12100 standard with application of the hybrid method ISO/TR 14121-2 and calculation of the Performance Level according to ISO 13849-1. Finally, in the case of machines installed in a classified environment, or which generate potentially explosive enclaves within them (whose legislative references are contained in: NR 10, NR 12, NR 20 and Portaria n. 179/2010), the attention during the construction phase should be focused only on the electrical components, leaving out, for example, the risks due to overheating of moving parts. In most cases, a presumption of conformity can be based on IECEx certification. In case of application of EN (ATEX) standards or previous editions of currently applicable IEC standards, a gap analysis of acceptance requirements can be carried out.

s part of the disclosure of issues related to sustainability in the world of packaging, the magazine ItaliaImballaggio and the Packmedia.net platform have for some time been paying close attention to the business choices made in this area by manufacturers of goods and manufacturers of packaging systems. Together with the market players we are therefore discussing the strategic and ethical importance of sustainability, focusing on results and future achievements. Following the worldwide trend to increasingly involve women in technical profiles, as advocated by the international movement Women In Tech, we aim to listen the vision of leading female actors who are playing a key role in combining innovation, technology and sustainability.

«We welcome the growing attention of consumers to the environment and, consequently, the demand for increasingly green products» declares Marta Schiraldi, Safety, Health, Environment and Sustainability Head of Gruppo Nestlé Italia. «We must realize that the planet is one and it belongs to everyone, so each of us can and must contribute to its protection, even with small daily gestures such as, for example, the proper separation of waste. We want to act positively by working on awareness; the path of innovation must include substantial issues such as, for example, attention to quality and food safety, which in our great challenge, must remain unchanged while making sustainable choices. Consumers are increasingly demanding greater activism from companies, starting with the product. That’s why we have developed “Where do I throw it?”, a

It is in this perspective that we asked some key figures in the management of green policies, what they think of the role of “carriers” of innovation and best practices with respect to the complex issue of sustainability and how this role is played by the companies in which they work. Sales volumes, international markets, large and articulated supply networks on entire supply chains are in fact conditioned by those who are making sustainability a cornerstone of industrial strategy. By creating a virtuous circle between ecology, economics, consumer or supplier education, these companies in fact become, the protagonists of the green revolution based on a marketing that takes on an ethical value as well as an economic one. Here are some excerpts from the statements made by the (female) managers we interviewed on the subject.

was less developed. This too is a sign of the times, which makes us look to the future with optimism. The Nestlé project is open to other brands and partners, precisely in order to extend the effectiveness of sustainability action. Well-known names, such as Lactalis, have already taken up the common challenge and are participating with their products in the app, thus supporting the effectiveness of mindful end-of-life management, with the active support of Nestlé».

Remaining in the world of Food & Beverage, the incisiveness of the action is also strong in another company of the Nestlè Group, the historic brand Sanpellegrino where Fabiana Marchini, Head of Sustainability, says: «There is a strong ethical correspondence in our way of doing sustainability. For Sanpellegrino it means taking care of the territory in which it operates, giving value to the communities, with actions related to the protection of natural heritage, developing plans that allow us to achieve production efficiency and energy saving. We are therefore talking about hybrid savings, ecosustainable logistics, territorial projects in partnership: all examples of what it means to do sustainability through the reduction of packaging or the path of innovation with R&D, in favor of natural capital, which is our wealth. On the new lifestyles front, we are active in promoting the relationship between health and sustainability. These themes are linked to recycling education, for example, because although consumers are evolving, they need clear suggestions about possible solutions to orient themselves. With Levissima’s Regeneration program, we educate people about recycling and segregated waste collection, but we also focus attention on other things. I’m thinking of the Levissima fitness area in Milan’s Sempione Park, which we helped restore and requalify, where we combine green issues with a healthy lifestyle, recalling an essential aspect linked to our “water” product, namely proper hydration. Through the Sanpellegrino Observatory, we are also engaged in an articulated program to promote the benefits of proper hydration. With “Water School”, we teach children the importance of healthy drinking and the need to recycle packaging, thus combining the idea of a sustainable future with consistent and healthy

lifestyles. Returning to the valorization of the territories in which we operate, and our commitment to the valorization of sources and water, last November we obtained AWS (Alliance for Water Stewardship) certification, which attests to the sustainable and shared management of water resources and testifies to what we are committed to doing, with a view to progressively reducing the amount of water we use. The group aims to certify all its plants by 2025. A decision that demonstrates how essential we believe it is to manage water responsibly. Biodiversity is also an area of commitment for us. With Acqua Panna, for example, we have started a collaboration with Federparchi to enhance the territory of the Panna Reserve thanks to a census of the fauna and flora present in the areas where we operate. This commitment demonstrates how much we care about the natural capital that we manage, also through the creation of an extraordinary team, which I have the pleasure of coordinating. Another example that shows how Sanpellegrino’s approach is systemic; the expression of a vision that comes from afar, in respecting water, in doing things that anticipate the needs of the consumer, in choosing eco-sustainable and light logistics, in using energy from 100% renewable sources in our factories, where we have a very low factory impact in terms of emissions».

Sustainability is a concept that cuts across different markets. In the beauty sector, for example, there are companies like Davines that place this issue at the center of their actions at all levels, from the involvement of the territory and its economic fabric to the active participation of suppliers and clients in their actions, acting in a systemic logic that is the basis of circularity and greenness.«It’s clear that Davines works as a system on every possible occasion» says Sonia Ziveri, Chief Sustainability Officer of Davines SpA. «Our President, Davide Bollati, is very active in the city and, with Parma Io Ci Sto, has contributed to the dream of

Parma as Capital of Culture, pushing for the candidacy of Green Capital 2022. A goal that has been missed, for now, but which has shown how companies, the administration and other stakeholders can work together for the common good. Working with other companies, Davide Bollati launched the idea of kilometroverdeparma, which then became a Consortium, under the coordination of Maria Paola Chiesi of Chiesi Farmaceutici, which is also a B Corp. This group aims to create a tree barrier that will curb fine dust and reduce the impact of the highway along the stretch that runs in front of the companies. An initiative that has already set the standard, leading to the adhesion of other companies, which have created new planting areas, compared to the original kilometroverdeparma. Also by Davide Bollati is the idea of the Alliance for Carbon Neutrality of the Province of Parma. In this case, the Municipality and Province of Parma, I Parchi del Ducato and the Emilia-Romagna Region join forces with the University of Parma and Unione Industriale to measure emissions and define a reduction strategy, carrying out offsetting actions. A philosophy based on teamwork, which also includes the 6 countries where Davines has branches: London, Paris, New York, Deventer in the Netherlands, Hong Kong and Mexico City, where the involvement in the territory is strong even where there are only representatives: the common key is the sharing of values and approach».

Returning to the world of food and beverage, here is the voice of a historic brand of the sector, Lavazza Group, where Francesca Squillace, plays the role of Packaging and Materials Director. «Recently, our CEO spoke about the guiding principles towards a sustainable future, which are embodied in the Roadmap to Zero. This is a gradual path undertaken by Lavazza with an ambitious goal: by 2030, the impact of CO2 emissions generated along the Group’s supply chain will be totally reduced to zero. This principle must be extended to all activities. Therefore, from the point of view of R&D our commitment is to design green packaging, respecting first and foremost the safety of the consumer, i.e. using food grade materials in the design phase and, subsequently, monitoring the products intended for consumption, until the end of their shelf-life».

The circle is closed by a big player of the largescale retail trade that, thanks to a longterm strategy, has today the ability to influence in a green direction the whole chain that starts from the producer and arrives to the consumer, passing through packaging and communication. Here’s what Chiara Faenza, Sustainability and Innovation Values manager Coop, thinks about it. «For Coop, packaging and product sustainability are a unicum, where the dialogue between consumers, large-scale retail trade and the market is constant, involving environmental protection, respect for the territory, safety, and sociality, to the point of composing a virtuous circle that describes the new lifestyles and consumption driven by the large players, which are in turn conditioned by them, and not just for now I can remember actions that, in the early ‘80s, promoted the collection of plastic shoppers, which we already then saw as an element not to be dispersed in the environment. In the 1990s we did a campaign on the proper collection of waste and packaging, at a time when, for both examples, no legislation or even public opinion, called for something similar. Much more recently, in 2021, we installed Seabins. These are garbage baskets used as floating collectors, placed in the waters of rivers and lakes in Italy. The placement took place during public events, which involved members and institutions in moments of awareness, designed as real actions on the territory. With the sponsorship of the 2019 Jova Beach Tour, we launched the 30% recyclable bottles that were collected by volunteers during the 17 concerts and then used to make T-shirts. Finally, we should not forget the 100% recyclable bottle, which we have on the

In 2018 we joined the Pledge Campaign within the Plastic Strategy of the European Commission: we are the only Italian player among the first 107 signatories of the Circular Plastic Alliance: today we are 293. The role of Ambassador of the Ethical Packaging Charter also goes in this direction and we consider it both a starting point and an arrival point. On the other hand, our dissemination activity has not been “a straight line”, but a circle, which goes back on itself, reproducing the logic of infinite circularity at the basis of sustainability. For us, adhering to the concepts of the Ethical Charter means networking, creating synergies and medium and long term relationships, certainly not “hit and run”: a style that has always belonged to Coop and that shows the full sharing of the concepts expressed by the authors of the Charter and the Foundation that promotes it. In short, sustainability in the round, from the content to the container, which should not be separated but must be bearers of the same values».

The corona pandemic only unfolded its full impact on the market in the course of the second quarter of 2020. Sales of deodorants and hairsprays - like the entire cosmetics sector suffered in the first half of 2021 because consumers went out less due to the pandemic. That is why the deliveries to the deodorant market, which is dominant in terms of volume and which accounts for

around 60 percent of all deliveries in the industry, fell by almost 2 percent. Deliveries to the hairspray segment were hit much harder and fell by a clear double-digit rate. The development in the food sector was very positive, as consumers spent more time at home and cooked the meals themselves. Worldwide deliveries to this market, which currently still has to be described as a niche market, increased by almost 50 percent. Although the AEROBAL members are very concerned about the skyrocketing aluminum price, the topic of sustainability and decarbonization is still at the top of the agenda in the aluminum aerosol can industry. In particular, customers’ requests to use recycled material in aluminum aerosol cans

he forward-looking intuition of a group of strong international investors has led to the creation of an innovative and eco-sustainable beverage start-up in Finland, H2O4U Finland Ltd, which packages natural spring water of the highest quality. The source is in Lahti - the leading green city in Finland and a leader of environmental work appointed as the European Green Capital 2021. The city has been recognized for its strict regulations for environmental and groundwater protection initiatives. H2O4U Finland is highly committed to health both for final consumers and for the planet. The company’s mission is to offer LAHQUA®, high quality water in its authentic pure state, and with minimum impact for the environment. Goal of the project For that reason, H2O4U Finland reached out to Robopac to participate in a 360° turnkey project targeting at best available technologies from sourcing to packaging and logistics – to guarantee 100% product quality and safety while using minimum of resources. Robopac was involved in responding to the need to create a complete end-of-line system to be installed in the green field plant of H2O4U Finland in Lahti, where they are planning the creation of a production site of over 7 thousand square meters. The Finnish company was looking for a collaborator capable of developing a 360-degree “turnkey” project. Robopac fully satisfied this need, proving to be the ideal part-

Focused on evolving trends and consumer needs, H2O4U Finland aims to develop a range of packaging formats suitable for different consumption occasions, with objective to offer convenient and eco-friendly solutions. 3 types of packaging At the production level, it translates into the need to study extremely versatile end-of-line solutions for packaging, able to adapt to different materials and formats, and guarantee green technologies that reduce energy and raw material consumption to a minimum.

Automation and flexibility, therefore, were the keywords imposed by the customer on Robopac who studied a tailor-made layout of the structure, optimizing and enhancing the available space. It was also essential to create a plant with a lower environmental impact and that would guarantee reduced consumption. The strong point for the development of the project was the intercompany synergy between Robopac, OCME and the English branch Robopac UK, based in Oakley, collaboration that allowed to identify the ideal choices to satisfy the customer. MONTBLANC REPAIR POWDER Salchi Metalcoat, an Italian company specializing in the production of coatings for the building and packaging industries, has developed a white repair powder completely free of titanium dioxide (TiO2) for the internal protection of the side seam of three-piece food cans. The “MontBlanc” project was created to find an alternative to the titanium dioxide, which has been the subject of European discussions over the past year about its health impact. Recently, in fact, the European Commission has classified

Handling pasta packages with a vacuum gripper system Precise and delicate handling of different formats and layers of pasta, increased production rhythms and a considerable reduction in costs: these are the advantages of integrating Piab’s Kenos® KVGL gripper on a cartoning plant realized by Selematic. Producer of machines for the secondary packaging of pre-packed food products, with an important focus on the segment of pasta factories, Selematic was looking for a solution to be integrated on one of its case packer systems, able to perform in a versatile way the gripping and the positioning inside the cartonboxes of different types of packaging: double square bottom packages of short pasta, gusseted packages of nest pasta and pillow packages of long pasta, etc... The choice fell on Piab’s Kenos® KVGL vacuum gripping system, driven by a Cartesian robot; once put into production, the solution, precise and flexible, made it possible to achieve the manufacturer’s objectives: increasing productivity by minimizing machine downtime for format changes and the rejection of packages accidentally damaged during gripping, with a significant reduction in costs. Project specifications The Selematic system fills the cartonbox from above by means of the progressive overlapping of several layers of pasta packs. Faced with the high number of formats and layers of the packages, the first need was, therefore, to reduce to a minimum the replacements of the gripping organs to manage the format changeover. Engineering Services, responsible for the project, explains: «Before the collaboration with Piab, the pasta packages were picked up by means of a blower with a gripping plate designed and built internally. When the size of the packages and/or the layering of the packages inside the cartons changed, the plate had to be replaced. This entailed costly machine downtime, significantly extending cycle times. Another problem was represented by the frequent breakages, which occurred mainly with paper packages and with certain types of pasta (for example pens). The Kenos® KVGL gripper solved both problems». The Piab system allows to pick up with a single gripper system (with a length equal to the mouth of the pallet box) any pasta format, even of different sizes, without causing any damage to the packages. The Kenos® KVGL vacuum gripper has been equipped with Piab’s piGRIP® suction cups with BGI lips with a diameter of 34 mm. Thanks to the solutions adopted, the maximum production capacity achieved by the case packing plant now ranges from 80 to 120 packs per minute, depending on the product. Quality and service, the added values of collaboration However, technological excellence is not the only characteristic that Selematic has appreciated in its

partnership with Piab. Before choosing the Kenos® KVGL system from Piab, we tested solutions from other suppliers that worked quite well, but were decidedly more expensive. Piab convinced us also because of the advice provided during the project realization phase. The technicians of the Italian branch, in collaboration with the authorized distributor Tesfluid Srl, assisted us in choosing the right vacuum pump and in identifying the most suitable type of suction cups to be combined with the Kenos® KVGL system».

IXON COMPLIES WITH IEC 62443 STANDARDS FOR CYBER SECURITY IXON works alongside machine builders to guarantee the security of their IT/OT technologies. The Dutch company, which provides remote services and IIoT solutions for machine builders and system integrators, has obtained certification to the IEC 62443 security standard through collaboration with Applied Risk, a recognised partner in the field of cyber security. In complying with these standards, IXON aims to provide customers with valuable support in completing certification and in building systems and machinery with the highest levels of security. The IEC 62443 family consists of 14 standards divided into 4 categories. IXON complies with both IEC 62443-4-1 and IEC 62443-4-2 standards, which contain the technical guidelines for developing secure industrial components and products and are aimed at manufacturers of industrial devices. Compliance with these standards ensures that IXON’s components are secure, thereby contributing to the part of IEC 62443 that machine builders consider most important, namely IEC 62443-3-3. This section of the standard ensures that an entire system or machine is secure in terms of cyber security.

Tethered closure solutions Tethered caps - caps that remain attached to containers during product use (including opening and closing) - will become part of our daily lives in Europe starting in 2024. In fact, with the aim of reducing the impact of certain plastic products on the environment, EU Directive 2019/904 requires that lids and caps on single-use plastic bottles and composite packaging with a capacity of up to three liters remain attached to containers throughout their use. AROL (closure, feeding and cap orientation systems) is already working with packaging and bottling line manufacturers to

minimize the impact of this change (although, in most cases, a simple cone replacement will suffice) In recent months, AROL has been working with Coca-Cola, along with several closure manufacturers, in the validation process of the new GME 30.40 closure system for PET bottles for carbonated soft drinks (CSD), both at the laboratory level (at AROL’s headquarters) and at the industrial level (at the CCEP production line in the Barcelona Spain plant). The GME 30.40 closure system for PET bottles (CETIE code) is the first international standard developed specifically for tethered closures, in order to ensure their compliance

with the EU UAS Directive. The industrial trial carried out at the CCEP plant in Barcelona involved the production of more than 6 million saleable bottles in 500 ml format closed with the new 26/22 CS collar caps.

X20 Embedded from B&R: maximum performance in half the space B&R has introduced X20 Embedded, a new family of PLCs that combine high performance with numerous integrated interfaces in a 55 mm wide housing, just half the width of comparable devices. With their powerful Intel Atom processors, the new PLCs are also suitable for demanding applications with short cycle times. They are highly compact and capable of handling robotics applications, bringing savings for machine builders in terms of both cost and cabinet space. They come as standard with two USB ports, an integrated flash memory card and two Ethernet ports. An integrated switch supports daisy-

chain cabling without any additional network infrastructure. The devices are equipped with hardware interfaces for Powerlink and RS485. Despite their high performance, the PLCs do not require any fans or batteries, making them fully maintenance free. Versions are available with optional interface slots to support additional fieldbus protocols. All B&R interface cards can be combined with the X20 Embedded series, and all X20 I/O modules can be connected as normal.

TAU RSC PRINTER PORTFOLIO IN ITS NEW CROSS-PLATFORM DESIGN To address new market demands of delivering long runs in the shortest possible time with environmentally friendly label production, Durst has updated its Tau RSC platform and further improved the successful Tau 330 RSC and Tau 330 RSC E presses for short and medium runs. Even various Tau RSCi solutions for hybrid printing and inline processing can now be offered, thanks to the expansion of the product range with various partners. The Durst Tau RSCi can be configured with optional flexo stations before and/or after the digital print unit. Therefore, challenging materials can be used by adding a primer or combination printing between flexo and UV inkjet. By printing white over with the post-press flexo station, more applications can be added. The user-friendly flexo stations fit to available printing widths of 330, 420 or 510 mm of the Tau RSCi and are equipped with a slide in/out carriage to aid loading and unloading of the ink pan, pick-up and anilox roller.

Packaging pouches in various shelf-ready formats Made by Cama Group for a multinational food company, the plant for the secondary and tertiary packaging of stand-up pouches in various shelf-ready configurations for the large-scale retail trade responds promptly to the requirements of high productivity, ergonomics, rapid and flexible format changeover.

In recent times, various factors at global level have influenced the behavior and lifestyles of billions of people. Like other sectors, the food sector has seen a rapid evolution, following the exponential growth of eCommerce, accelerated during the pandemic, and the affirmation of new marketing and consumption models, with the advent of campaigns, offers and diversified product lines, in all distribution channels, GDO in primis. In this scenario, the supply of ultraflexible production and packaging systems, which can be configured quickly and easily according to needs, is an essential condition for competitiveness. Cama Group, at the forefront in addressing the demand for greater efficiency, has recently supplied a multinational company in the food sector with a secondary and tertiary packaging plant, capable of combining high production rates with extreme flexibility in format changeover. Specifications of a made in Italy project The plant supplied by Cama packages

a daily use product for feeding children in a pouch with an open and close cover: an advantageous choice, that of the re-sealable Doypack format ready for consumption “on the go”, for the benefits of practicality, product dosing, storage, and transportation that this format provides. Cama has therefore proposed a solution designed to package standup pouches in SRP (Shelf Ready Packaging) cases made from flat blanks. Following that, the same cases must be encased in a wraparound case, suitable for handling in supermarkets. Cama’s intervention has also made it possible to replace the two pre-

existing production plants - one for pre-glued boxes and another for flat cardboard wrap-around packs - with a single packing machine, capable of carrying out all the packaging steps at the end of the line. FW746: more operations with a single machine The different steps are carried out by a single, very compact machine: the FW746 model by Cama Group (derived from the FW748, standard machine) can create crates with dimensions up to a quarter of a pallet (400 X 300 mm) for products that require reduced packaging due to the demands of the large-scale retail trade. The FW746 model can be integrated into a monobloc robotic unit to create a complete packaging system with box formation, loading, and closing: the product enters with primary packaging, and the box exits ready for shipment.

From the pouch to the SRP. The checked and sorted pouches are inserted into Shelf Ready Packaging boxes made from flat blanks (previously a pre-glued cardboard was used) for multipack boxes of four pouches of 100 g each or microwave for other formats (with hot glue closure). This is the current weight for the pouches, but different sizes (85, 90, 100, 128, 130, and 180 grams) are possible depending on the production programs. It will be possible to include larger formats, such as the 500 gram one. Speed ranges from 30 to 72 SRP packages per minute (4x100 gram format). The Shelf Ready Packaging boxes (four pouches) are grouped and placed in corrugated cardboard wraparound boxes made from flat blanks (closed with hot glue). There are three cases in each wrap case. Speed ranges from 10 to 20 cases per minute.
