Bevande: TREND TECNOLOGICI Gli utilizzatori chiedono impianti di riempimento sempre più flessibili, sanificabili in ogni componente, automatici e connessi a monte e a valle da software “aperti” a possibili crescite future.

O

biettivo: confezionare una crescente varietà di bevande, spesso delicate, garantendo la migliore qualità organolettica e una lunga vita senza problemi. A partire dalle esigenze del mercato, ecco come risponde la R&S.

L’IMPIANTISTICA PER IL RIEMPIMENTO • Disponibilità in pronta consegna e massima flessibilità operativa sono le due principali caratteristiche richieste agli impianti di riempimento per bevande e alimenti liquidi, di qualunque tipo e comunque confezionati. Accomunano gli utilizzatori anche esigenze di qualità ed economicità, a cui si aggiungono - più concretamente - richieste specifiche di basso consumo energetico, minor numero di operatori, rapidità di cambio prodotto e formato del contenitore, compatibilità fra le diverse macchine che

costituiscono una linea.

• Alquanto differenziati, invece - in funzione del prodotto, del tipo di contenitore e dalla stessa concezione della macchina - i sistemi di alimentazione, che possono essere volumetrici, gravimetrici o in contropressione. I primi sono impiegati soprattutto per le bottiglie di PET a perdere, che presentano delle misure fortemente standardizzate e permettono di dosare con precisione, tramite un flussometro induttivo, la quantità di liquido (fattore critico, perché il riempimento per difetto non è ammissibile e quello per eccesso aumenta i costi di produzione).

• Tecnologie specifiche sono dedicate rispettivamente alle bevande piatte e a quelle addizionate con anidride carbonica, anche se esistono processi combinati che permettono di trattare entrambi i prodotti nello stesso impianto. A seconda del tipo di bevanda si decide anche

Objective: to package a growing variety of beverages, often delicate ones, guaranteeing the best organoleptic quality and longest shelf life with no problems. Starting from the market demands, here’s how R&D has responded.

FILLING EQUIPMENT • Just in time availability and maximum operational flexibility are the two main characteristics in demand for filling installations for beverages and food liquids of any type and

packaging. Other universal demands are quality and economy, as well as more concretely - specific requests for low energy consumption, less operators, quick product and container format change and compatibility between the different machines that constitute a line.

• Rather varied, on the other hand according to product, container type and machine conception - as far as feeding systems go, which can be volumetric, gravimetric or with counter-pressure. The first are used

• Finally, some issues of ever increasing relevance in the conception of a filling plant should at least be mentioned: - Hygienic Design plays a fundamental role in all components which enter into direct contact with the product. CIP automatic production line washing systems, the use of automatic jet dispenser devices for washing the external surfaces of various machines and the adoption of inclined work tables to prevent stagnation of liquids are all expanding; - heating flat beverages prior to filling is a simple way to lengthen average product life; this process is used for glass bottles, cans and special PET containers called hot fills; - hot filling non-alcoholic beverages in

Un monoblocco ad alta tecnologia Più che positivi i risultati registrati da Ronchi Mario SpA (Gessate, MI) all’Hispack di Barcellona (11-15 maggio scorso). L’azienda lombarda, specializzata nella produzione di macchine automatiche per il riempimento e la tappatura, ha portato in Spagna soluzioni che incorporano le più avanzate tecnologie, presentate da un personale altamente qualificato, che privilegia un rapporto stretto e consolidato con il cliente. Una filosofia aziendale premiata dall’interesse degli addetti per il monoblocco di riempimento e tappatura Exacta/R 18/6S, lanciato per l’occasione e in funzione presso lo stand.

Questa macchina garantisce prestazioni di sanificazione e lavaggio di alto profilo, assicurate da una tecnologia allo stato dell’arte che incorpora riempimento con flussimetri, teste tappanti controllate da servomotori, basamento inclinato per migliorare la pulizia delle superfici. Particolarmente evoluto il sistema di lavaggio e sterilizzazione CIP/SIP, e il dispositivo di lavaggio automatico a circuito chiuso gestito da pannello, che riducono sensibilmente i tempi operativi e i residui da smaltire dopo il lavaggio e cambio prodotto. Da menzionare, infine, lo svuotamento automatico delle bottiglie prima del lavaggio e/o del cambio prodotto.

A high technology monoblock More than positive results for Ronchi Mario SpA (Gessate, MI) at Hispack in Barcelona (last May 11th15th). The Lombardy concern, specialized in the production of automatic machines for filling and capping, brought to Spain solutions that incorporate the most advanced technologies, presented by highly qualified personnel that value a close and well-founded relationship with the customer. A business philosophy which was awarded with the interest of experts in the Exacta/R 18/6S monoblock filling and capping machine, launched for the occasion and operational at the stand.

This machine guarantees high performance in sanitizing and washing, ensured by state-of-the-art technology which incorporates filling with flow meters, capping heads driven by servomotors and an inclined baseframe surface to ensure accurate cleaning. Particularly advanced are the CIP/SIP cleaning and sterilization system and the automatic washing system in a closed circuit, managed from the operator's panel, which considerably reduce operating times and wastes that need disposal after washing and changeover. Worth mention, finally, is the automatic emptying of the machine by removal of all bottles inside before a washing and/or product change operation.

La pressa più veloce del mondo In collaborazione con Assocomaplast, l’associazione dei costruttori italiani di macchine e stampi per materie plastiche e gomma, a maggio Sacmi Closures & Containers (Imola) ha presentato in anteprima al Chinaplas 2009 di Guangzhou la nuova CCM80. La Continuos Compression Moulding machine è stata proposta come la pressa a compressione più veloce del mondo, capace di produrre in un minuto più di 2000 capsule con soli 80 stampi e un tempo ciclo di soli 2,4 secondi.

CCM80 lavora i diversi tipi di materia prima (PP, HDPE, LDPE...) e realizza capsule con diametro fino a 33 mm, h max 25 mm e peso massimo di 6 g.

The world’s fastest press In May, in collaboration with Assocomplast, the association of Italian manufacturers of machines and moulds for plastic materials and rubber, Sacmi Closures & Containers (Imola) presented at Guangzhou’s Chinaplas 2009 a preview of the new CCM80. The Continuous Compression Moulding machine was proposed as the fastest compression press in the world, capable of producing in one minute more than 2000 capsules with just 80 moulds and a cycle time of just 2.4 seconds. CCM80 works with different types of raw materials (PP, HDPE, LDPE…) and creates capsules with a diameter of up to 33 mm, max h of circa 25 mm and maximum weight of 6 g.

• Vanno, infine, almeno citati alcuni aspetti sempre più rilevanti nella concezione di un impianto di riempimento: - l’Hygienic Design gioca un ruolo fondamentale in tutti i componenti che entrano a diretto contatto con il prodotto.

Crescono gli impianti CIP per la pulizia automatica delle linee di produzione, l’impiego dei dispositivi automatici di erogazione a getto per lavare le superfici esterne delle varie macchine e l’adozione di piani lavoro con superfici inclinate per evitare ristagni di liquido; - riscaldare le bevande piatte prima del riempimento ne allunga in modo semplice la vita media; questo processo viene impiegato soprattutto per bottiglie di vetro, recipienti speciali di PET chiamati hot fill e lattine; - cresce il favore per il riempimento a caldo in bottiglie di plastica di bevande analcoliche, per le linee combinate (e dunque massimamente flessibili) e per il riempimento in asettico.

I PROGRESSI DELL’ASETTICO A FREDDO

• Il vantaggio per antonomasia dell’asettico è la sicurezza microbiologica, migliorata nel corso del tempo per effetto di un più efficace trattamento esterno delle bottiglie, di una più precisa demarcazione fra aree sterili e non, dell’adozione di materiali igienici come l’acciaio ecc. Logico, dunque, che nel riempimento delle bevande più delicate (tipicamente, quelle senza conservanti) che soffrono il riempimento a caldo, si sia sviluppato un procedimento asettico “a freddo” a cui, infatti, si fa crescente ricorso. Viene impiegato anche come alternativa al riempimento di bottiglie e lattine con processi di pastorizzazione a tunnel.

Diverse le tecnologie utili: la sterilizzazione dei contenitori e delle chiusure con acido peracetico e vapore (asettico a umido); quella a secco, che impiega perossido di idrogeno (H2O2) e spopola nel latte, nell’imbottigliamento nei contenitori di PET e in tutte le situazioni carat-

ADVANCES IN COLD ASEPTIC • The advantage par excellence brought by aspetic techniques is microbiological safety, which has improved because of more effective external treatment of the bottles, a more precise division between sterile and non-sterile areas, the adoption of hygienic materials such as steel etc. It is therefore logical that for filling more delicate beverages (usually those with no preservatives) which do not fair well in hot filling, a “cold” aseptic procedure has been developed, whose use is spreading.

It is also used as an alternative to filling bottles and cans with tunnel pasteurization processes.

There are various useful technologies: sterilization of containers and closures

with peracetic acid and steam (wet aseptic); dry aseptic, which uses hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and is popular in milk, bottling in PET containers and in all situations characterized by high water consumption and refluent water disposal costs.

There are also expectations for plasma sterilization, which has been talked about for years, but has still not “broken through”.

We also highlight the growing attention towards specific aspects of cold filling, which has been the object of developments which aim to further optimize the process: - clean rooms are becoming smaller and smaller, thus reducing energy consumption and increasing safety; - the spread of aseptic methods has also fostered that of PET bottles in various liquid food sectors; - the sterile condition spreads beyond

Il mezzo litro sempre più leggero Secondo le stime delle aziende che hanno sviluppato il progetto, si tratta della bottiglia da mezzo litro più leggera oggi disponibile. È stata realizzata in prototipo su una macchina a stiro-soffiaggio della Krones AG, impiegando un nuovo tipo di polistirene messo a punto in Basf e denominato BX 3580. Grazie alla maggiore leggerezza di questo materiale rispetto al PET, la bottiglia pesa solo 7,5 grammi. Ma non è solo la grammatura a “fare notizia”: in fase di sviluppo Basf ha verificato l’idoneità delle tecnologie di stiro-soffiaggio a produrre bottiglie leggerissime, e dunque a costi inferiori e con minor consumo di risorse.

Inoltre, e questo è il terzo, fondamentale, vantaggio che la nuova bottiglia presenta, grazie alla più bassa densità del polistirene rispetto al PET si ottengono contenitori di peso inferiore ma con pareti di pari spessore.

Viste le peculiarità del PS BX 3580, Basf ne consiglia l’impiego nella produzione di contenitori per liquid food a base latte.

The lighter and lighter half liter According to estimates by the concerns which developed the design, it represents the lightest half liter bottle available today. A prototype was created on a Krones AG stretch-blowing machine using a new type of polystyrene developed by Basf and called BX 3580. Thanks to the greater lightness of this material with respect to PET, the bottle weighs just 7.5 grams. But the “real news” isn’t just its weight: in the development phase, Basf verified the suitability of stretch-blowing technologies for producing extremely light bottles, and therefore lower costs and with less consumption of resources.

Moreover, and this is the third fundamental advantage of the new bottle, the lower density of polystyrene with respect to PET enables obtaining containers that are lighter but with walls of the same thickness.

Given the peculiarities of PS BX 3580, Basf recommends its use in the production of containers for milk-based liquid foods.

Ultra fresco in alluminio Yoplait lancia Dizzy, una nuova generazione di bevande ultra fresche a base di latte, e la commercializza in una bottiglia d’alluminio da 250 ml prodotta su linee dedicate da Boxal (Beaurepaire, F). Del tutto inedito e fortemente distintivo, il contenitore rompe tutti i codici tradizionali e buca lo scaffale, conquistando l’attenzione dei consumatori (target principale, i giovani fra i 15 e i 25 anni). Inoltre assicura la massima qualità del contenuto in termini di freschezza, igienicità, integrità e durata di vita. Ma non basta: la bottiglietta dei Dizzy è integralmente riciclabile, brillantemente stampata ad alta definizione sull’intera superficie, leggera da trasportare e infrangibile.

Si segnala, inoltre, la crescente attenzione per alcuni aspetti specifici del riempimento a freddo, oggetto di sviluppi che mirano all’ottimizzazione ulteriore del processo: - le camere senza polvere diventano sempre più piccole, riducendo così i consumi di energia e aumentando la sicurezza; - la diffusione dell’asettico ha sostenuto anche quella delle bottiglie di PET in vari segmenti del liquid food; - la condizione di sterilità oltrepassa la zona di riempimento estendendosi a monte e a valle, soprattutto a raccordi, rubinetteria e ausili per la preparazione del disinfettante, dell’acqua e dell’aria sterili, del vapore e dei gas inerti.

IL RUOLO STRATEGICO DELLA LOGISTICA

Anche in un mondo in cui gli acquisti vengono fatti via Internet, con un click del mouse, la merce deve comunque essere trasportata fisicamente fino al consumatore, con il conseguente aumento del traffico e il grande sviluppo delle reti distributive a livello nazionale e internazionale.

Muta di conseguenza, e a gran velocità anche la logistica, in funzione della varietà di prodotti e contenitori, della ridu-

zione delle dimensioni dei lotti e dei tempi di consegne (che sono anche sempre più frequenti), delle disposizioni del regolamento CE 178/2002 sulla rintracciabilità dei prodotti, e dei nuovi sistemi di codifica ( EAN 128 e EDI).

In questo contesto, è evidente la necessità di automatizzare i flussi, per razionalizzare e integrare le varie operazioni.

Ecco, per sommi capi, come si muove l’industria delle bevande.

• I produttori lavorano perlopiù con magazzini a blocchi e, per ottimizzare gli spazi, si orientano verso l’alternativa verticale (magazzino a scaffali). Mezzi di trasporto e macchine di servizio effettuano lo stoccaggio e il prelievo dei pallet in modo mirato, minimizzando i costi di gestione.

THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF LOGISTICS

Ultra-fresh in aluminium Yoplait launches Dizzy, a new generation of ultra-fresh milkbased beverages, and markets it in a 250 ml aluminium bottle made on lines prepared by Boxal (Beaurepaire, F). Brand new and highly distinctive, the container breaks every convention and stands out on the shelf, winning the attention of consumers (primary target, young people aged 15-25 years). It also ensures maximum quality of contents in terms of freshness, hygiene, integrity and shelf life. And as if that’s not enough: the Dizzy bottle is entirely recyclable, brilliantly printed all over in high definition, lightweight and unbreakable.

Even in a world in which purchases are done via Internet with the click of a mouse, goods still need to be physically transported to the consumer, with the consequential increase in traffic and the considerable growth of national and international distribution networks.

Consequently logistics is also changing fast, affected by the variety of products and containers, the reduction in lot sizes and delivery times (which have also become more frequent), the provisions of regulation CE 178/2002 on product traceability and the new coding systems (EAN

128 and EDI).

In this context, the necessity of automating flows is clear, in order to rationalize and integrate the various operations. Here, in brief, is the direction in which the beverage industry is moving.

• Manufacturers work for the most part with block warehouses and, in order to optimize available space, are moving towards the vertical alternative (shelf warehouses). Vehicles and service machines store and retrieve pallets in a targeted fashion, minimizing handling costs.

• Every commercial chain organizes the layout of its products in at the POP according to its own criteria.

Consequently, some request deliveries on europallets, while others prefer smaller pallets (one half, one quarter or one eighth in size). The various box-pallet and display-pallet shapes, preferably on moveable carts,

ItaliaImballaggio is an independent magazine, published by Edizioni Dativo Srl, Milan, whose aim is to give voice to the Italian packaging industry in as capable and professional way as possible, while rejecting a conformism that all too often confuses information with advertising.

The magazine is divided up into five basic sections - covering marketing and design, statistics and sector trends, management, environment and legislation and lastly, technological and product innovation - all of which including indepth features and news in brief.

Extra, ergonomico, elegante Si chiama Farchioni il maggior produttore di olio di oliva dell'Umbria e il terzo in Italia, con una gamma di oltre 10 brand il più famoso dei quali è il Farchioni Classico di cui si producono oltre 12.000.000 bottiglie all’anno, vendute in tutto il mondo. Abito e simbolo di eccellenza, la bottiglia di vetro da un litro prodotta nello stabilimento di Aprilia della O-I, per la quale è stata voluta una forma ergonomica (l’incavo sui fianchi migliora la presa, anche di una mano piccola, e la rende sicura) e fortemente distintiva. Su entrambi i lati spiccano il marchio, realizzato a sbalzo sulla parte alta del corpo della bottiglia, e le etichette.

Extra, ergonomic, elegant Farchioni is the biggest olive oil producer in Umbria and the third biggest in Italy, with a range of more than 10 brands of which the most famous is Farchioni Classico (12,000,000 bottles a year are made and sold worldwide). Both garb and symbol of excellence, the one liter glass bottle produced in O-I’s Aprilia facility, for which a highly distinctive and ergonomic shape was requested (the indentations on the sides provide better and more secure grip, even for a small hand). On both sides the trademark appears, embossed on the upper part of the bottle’s body, as well as the labels.

• Ogni catena commerciale organizza secondo criteri propri la disposizione dei prodotti nel punto vendita. Di conseguenza, alcune chiedono consegne su europallet, mentre altre preferiscono pallet di dimensioni inferiori (dimezzate o ridotte a un quarto o a un ottavo). Le varie forme di box-pallet e display-pallet, preferibilmente su carrelli mobili, sono sempre più ricercate, alimentando anche la domanda di attrezzature dedicate (per esempio gli impianti di ri-confezionamento) e di soluzioni per la gestione degli ordini.

• I sistemi di trasporto automatici senza conducente stanno conquistando anche il beverage, permettendo di ottimizzare la logistica interna e i suoi costi.

Bag in box alla prova salute Anche se la loro dannosità per la salute umana non è provata, alcuni produttori di acqua minerale preferiscono evitare l’impiego di contenitori che cedono ftalati del tipo bifenolo A. Secondo le stime di Rapak Europe, questo fattore sta trainando il successo dei bag-in-box anche nel grande segmento delle acque minerali, assieme a economicità, igienicità, robustezza, impilabilità, comodità d’uso, riciclabilità… Per massimizzare tali vantaggi, Rapak ha adottato un film a basso tasso di contaminazione che, fra l’altro, mantiene integro il gusto dell’acqua, eliminando un ricorrente motivo di contestazione dei consumatori. Inoltre, il sacchetto interno ad alta barriera “implode” man mano che il liquido viene erogato, evitando ogni contatto con l’aria e i relativi rischi di contaminazione batteriologica.

I contenitori della Rapak sono disponibili con capacità da 0,75 a 1.400 litri, anche per il vending, e possono essere stampati con efficacia sull’intera superficie esterna, massimizzando l’impatto del marchio a scaffale.

Health testing for bag-in-box Even though their danger to human health is unproven, some producers of mineral water prefer not to use containers which release Biphenol A type phthalates. According to estimates by Rapak Europe, this factor is driving the success of bag-in-box solutions, also in the large segment of mineral waters, along with economy, hygiene, robustness, stackability, ease of use, recyclability…

In order to maximize these advantages, Rapak has adopted a low contamination film which, what’s more, maintains the integrity of the water’s taste, eliminating a frequent complaint of consumers. Furthermore, the internal high barrier bag “implodes” as the liquid is dispensed, preventing any contact with air and related risks of bacterial contamination.

Rapak’s containers are available with capacities ranging from 0.75 to 1,400 liters, also for vending, and can be effectively printed all over, maximizing brand impact on the shelf.

Large formats: transition to plastic Sipa SpA (Vittorio Veneto, TV) comes out with a new proposal for an integrated installation for the production and filling of 15-40 liter containers. The solution includes design of the preform and container, stations for injection and blowing (oneor two-stade) up through to filling and handling.

Intended for the food, water and beer sectors, it also serves for packaging chemical products, enabling conversion to PET of traditional large format packaging, usually HDPE or metal, with considerable advantages in terms of cost, speed and ease of production, as well as logistics.

Sipa designs, produces and markets internationally systems for the production of plastic containers, from the PET granule to the palletized bottle; the acquisition of the Berchi Group, formalized last September, enabled the integration of specialized skills related to filling and end of line.

Associate alle adeguate finiture Bericap per colli, assicurano riduzioni di materia prima fino al 28%, rispettano le condizioni richieste nei processi di riempimento in asettico e sono disponibili anche in versione DoubleSeal™ per la tenuta nei climi caldi. In vetrina a drinktec anche gli sviluppi a marchio HexaLite® per la chiusura di bottiglie di acqua minerale non gassata (da 26 e 30 mm).

Following this program with perseverance and ample investments in R&D, Bericap has developed a selection of solutions which accommodate the cost savings, performance and environmental sustainability demands of the market. These solutions are also the subject of the June conference (17-18/6/2009, Massa Martana, PG), where Bericap’s Italian subsidiary (Melzo, MI) has invited the beverage industry and manufacturers of preforms, bottles, moulds and blowing lines to take stock of the technological situation. Particular attention is dedicated to the downgauging of necks for PET bottles, also on show at the next drinktec in Munich where, along with the 38 mm closures for aseptic filling and various 28-38 mm solutions with oxygen scavenger, there will be the latest additions to the SuperShorty® brand family of products for beer, carbonated beverages and flat drinks (enhanced by 35 mm), and the version for hot fill applications. Featuring Bericap’s fine finishes for necks, they ensure a 28% reduction in raw materials, meet the requirements for aseptic filling processes and are also available in a DoubleSeal™ version for optimal seal in warm climates. Also on display at drinktec are the developments in the HexaLite® brand for closure of non-carbonated mineral water (for 26-30 mm).

PREFORME DECONTAMINATE A SECCO - Predis è il marchio registrato di un sistema di decontaminazione a secco messo a punto da Sidel, che permette di sterilizzare le preforme di PET senza impiegare acqua. Installato su un Combi (impianto integrato di soffiaggio, riempimento e tappatura) Predis assicura benefici sul piano economico e ambientale: rispetto alle lavorazioni in asettico, l’utilizzatore risparmia fino a 2-300 m3 di acqua al giorno e riduce fra i 150 e i 200 l al giorno il fabbisogno di prodotti chimici. Non richiede energia supplementare né produce effluenti liquidi e apre possibilità di riduzioni del peso delle bottiglie (fra i 2 e i 6 g rispetto alla media). Semplice, sicuro ed economico il ciclo produttivo, garantisce una sterilità commerciale di 1/10000. Le preforme ottenute hanno pareti interne lisce, più facili da pulire; tutte le bottiglie vengono soffiate direttamente con aria sterile, a partire da preforme decontaminate. L’assenza di residui di acqua e un impiego minimo di agenti sterilizzanti assicurano la qualità del contenuto (meno di un litro all’ora di perossido di idrogeno serve una produzione di 36.000 bph).

DRY DECONTAMINATION OF PREFORMS - Predis is the registered trademark of an innovative dry decontamination system developed by Sidel, which enables sterilization of PET preforms rather than of the bottles, without using any water. Installed onto a Combi (blowing, filling and capping integrated system), Predis guarantees safety, quality and food preservation at room temperature or in the cold chain. Its main benefits derive from the fact that it does not require any water; compared to traditional aseptic procedures, the user saves up to 2-300 m3 of water per day and reduces between 150 and 200 liters per day consumption of chemical products. That’s not all: the system does not require extra energy or produce effluent liquids and, most importantly, opens the door to significant reductions in bottle weight (between 2 and 6 grams with respect to the average).

Gli articoli possono essere ottenuti tramite stampaggio e soffiaggio, stampaggio a iniezione o coestrusione. Il catalogo standard, che include bottiglie multistrato, flaconi dalle forme geometriche complesse e packaging a 2 o 3 colori o a strisce, è molto ricco e ogni anno viene ampliato con nuove linee. Lablabo ha presentato una serie di dispenser con erogatori airless, ideali per prodotti farmaceutici e creme cosmetiche ad alta viscosità. COEXTRUDED FLACONS - KIV Kunstoff Industrie is specialized in the production of plastic flacons for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, chemical and food sector, with 3 ml to 5 l formats.

The articles can be made via blow moulding, injection or coextrusion moulding. The standard catalogue, that includes multilayer bottles, flacons with complex geometric shapes and 2 or 3 color or striped packaging, is very rich and each year is extended with new lines. The German concern has recently devised a new compostable material that uses different materials with a low environmental impact and a minimum part of maize starch (www.kivpackaging.com).

Lablabo presented a series of airless dispensers suitable for high viscosity cosmetic creams and pharmaceutical products. The new dispensers are equipped with an internal pouch, “EasyFoil”, which enables not only protecting the contents from oxygen and UV rays, but also maintaining the viscosity of the products, always dispensing precise doses. The EasyFoil pouch is made from a multilayer aluminium film sealed around an upper plastic ring and a lower “cup”. The use of aluminium foil also enables the use of the dispenser for products containing alcohol and those that are particularly sensitive, such as pharmaceuticals for transdermal applications. Il Polo Tecnologico della Cosmesi (sotto l’egida di Reindustria, l’agenzia di sviluppo economico della provincia di Cremona che si occupa di marketing territoriale) riunisce l’intera filiera cosmetica in un’ ottica di sistema. Ha presidiato Cosmopack fiera con uno stand collettivo di 100 m2 che riuniva molti degli aderenti all’iniziativa (altri hanno privilegiato la presenza diretta). Agostino Savoldi, presidente di Reindustria, ha espresso soddisfazione per i risultati ottenuti e per l’interesse suscitato dalla presentazione del volume “Levres de luxe - le rouge est mis” di Jean Marie-Martin Hattemberg. Appassionato della storia dei grandi marchi di profumeria e cosmetici dal 1880 ai giorni nostri, Hattemberg possiede una collezione di 400 rossetti storici, pezzi unici creati dai grandi marchi internazionali che hanno fatto la storia del make-up.

Il gruppo Quadpack (filiale italiana a Milano) ha portato a Cosmopack diverse linee di contenitori di plastica, innovative per immagine e per funzione. Fra le molte, segnaliamo l’economica e lineare Jupiter Collection in PP riciclabile, costituita da vasi a parete singola da 150 ml, tubi (in PE) con capacità da 3 a 10 ml, confezioni airless da 3 a 50 ml ed erogatori per lozioni da 150 ml.

Trendy containers The Quadpack group (Italian branch in Milan) has brought several lines of plastic containers, innovatory in terms of image and function, to Cosmoprof. Among the many, we highlight the economical and linear Jupiter Collection in recyclable PP, comprising two single wall 150 ml jars, tubes (in PE) with capacities from 3 to 10 ml, airless packs of from 3 to 50 ml and 150 ml lotion dispensers. A mention too of the Airless Jar Collection in PP for creams and “sensitive” tricological products (see photo), available with a host of decorations for max personalisation and with dispensers also patented for viscosities between 20 thousand and 40 thousand cps. EXTENSIONS OF RANGE Creativity, design, technology and flexibility are the criteria that have guided MeadWestvaco in the extension of its pump lines Calmar Melodie and Clikit™ IP sprays. Thanks to the extension of this range, today MWV is capable of serving all types of companies associated with the various positions of beauty products, no longer only for selective channels but also for the mass market. The new models are printed and decorated according to the customers’ wishes, available in a variety of colors, finishes and coatings - and iridescent, metalised, gleaming and soft touch - these are products in all sizes useful also for integrating with even the largest containers (with neck diameter from 13 to 20 mm). New measures also for the Calmar Aria Airless, Prelude Airless and Pearl Mini Airless.

A pole in order to act as a system The Technological Cosmetics Pole (under the aegis of Reindustria, agency for economic development of the province of Cremona that deals in territorial marketing) organizes the entire cosmetics chain as a system. They presided Cosmopack with a collective stand of 100 sq m combining most of those who have joined the undertaking (others preferred a direct presence).

Agostino Savoldi, the president of Reindustria, expressed his satisfaction with the results at the fair and the interest shown at the presentation of the volume entitled “Levres de luxe - le rouge est mis” by Jean Marie-Martin Hattemberg.

Beauty closure Seaquist designs and creates closure, pump, dispenser and aerosol spray systems and is represented in Italy by Somova (Zibido San Giacomo, MI). Here a rapid overview of new features: • the much awarded PinPoint™ applicator (1), developed by Seaquist Closures and chosen by L’Oréal for Biotherm Bio-Pur stain treatment traded in 15 ml tubes. It combines hygiene and accuracy and dispenses its contents with max delicacy from a conical shaped silicon valve. Its PP closure has a diameter of 19 mm; • the One Touch™ (2), standard or personalised, is present as interactive packaging. In particular the model with 2” diameter, as well as its flared shape, comes with a press-and-release button that enables the top to open showing the dispensing horefice. Ideal also for top down containers; • the Camelia closures (3), obtained via bi-injection and destined for containers of various forms for high range beauty. The line has been integrated with a Snap Top 24-410 that creates a strong brand identity.

Astucciatrice a balcone V2000 è un’astucciatrice orizzontale, realizzata da V2 Engineering Srl (Zola Predosa, BO) seguendo un criterio costruttivo “a balcone”. La macchina, costruita secondo le indicazioni GMP, è dunque facilmente ispezionabile e sanificabile; inoltre vanta un cambio formato semplice e rapido, con un numero molto ridotto di parti da sostituire, e regolazioni con indicatori.

Il posizionamento dei magazzini di astucci e foglietti è ergonomico, per agevolare il caricamento, e la macchina è equipaggiata di un nuovo tipo di sistema forzato per l’apertura degli astucci. Fra le altre caratteristiche da citare: la versatilità; le movimentazioni (trasporto prodotto, astucci e trasmissioni macchina) con cinghie dentate, per ridurre le emissioni sonore e aumentare l’affidabilità; il pannello di comando dotato di interfaccia operatore con touchscreen.

Cantilevered cartoning machine V2000 is a horizontal cartoning machine, made by V2 Engineering Srl (Zola Predosa, BO) following a cantilevered construction principle. The machine, built according to GMPs, is hence easy to inspect and sanitize; as well as that it features a simple and speedy format change, with only a limited number of parts that need replacing, and regulation with indicators. The positioning of the case and sheet magazine is ergonomic, to facilitate loading, and the machine is fitted with a new type of forced system for opening the cases. Among the other characteristics worth citing: its versatility; feeding (product, case transport and machine transmissions) with toothed belts, to reduce noise and increase reliability; the command panel fitted with operator interface with touchscreen.

CAPSULA ANTI-EFFRAZIONE - VG Emballage (Paris Cedex) ha messo a punto una nuova capsula anti-violo tamper evident che, dunque, “denuncia” l’eventuale rimozione dell’apposito sigillo di sicurezza. È realizzata in PP con tecnica di bi-iniezione, in due colori, con personalizzazioni in tampografia, e si inserisce sui flaconi del gruppo senza richiedere utensili dedicati e con un semplice fissaggio a pressione. Una volta rimosso il sigillo, l’estetica della confezione non resta compromessa (www.vg-emballage.com).

A TAMPER EVIDENT CAPSULE - VG Emballage (Paris Cedex) has devised a new tamper evident capsule that hence signals any attempt to remove the special safety seal. It is made in PP with bi-injection technology, in two colors, with personalisations in pad printing, and can be inserted on flacons of the group without demanding dedicated tools and attached by simple pressure.

The removal of the seal is not detrimental to the pack’s visuals (www.vg-emballage.com).

Innovare col design e i materiali «Tutte le nostre creazioni - afferma Dorien Bianco, marketing manager Toly Products Ltd. - sono progettate per offrire al cliente un’esperienza unica, che può andare dal concept design al prodotto finito». Questa global company non offre infatti solo compatti o articoli per la cura della pelle ma anche astucci di presentazione, scatole pop up, packaging di alluminio o in lega metallica Zamac, capsule per profumi… Toly si presenta dunque come fornitore unico, e come ogni anno, ha lanciato molte novità a Cosmopack.

• Tra i compatti ricordiamo Mercurine, la cui forma ergonomica si adatta al palmo della mano, e la linea Tiffany caratterizzata da una forma inusuale.

• Per la prima volta è stata inoltre lanciata una serie di vasetti airless per creme (il modello Slimline è dotato di bottone laterale per l’erogazione precisa della dose).

• Utilizzando una miscela di fibre di legno e materiali “tradizionali” come ABS, SAN or PP, Toly ha prodotto la nuova serie di compatti Bobble. Presentata come linea “eco-friendly”, in quanto più del 50% del materiale utilizzato è costituito da fibre legnose, è disponibile in vari colori e modelli.

Innovate with design and materials «All our creations - Dorien Bianco, marketing manager of Toly Products Ltd. states - have been designed to offer the customer a unique experience, that can run from concept design to the finished product». This global company in fact not only offers compacts and skincare articles, but also cardboard compacts, pop-up boxes, aluminium and Zamac alloy packaging, fragrance caps. Toly is a one stop supplier and, as in every year, it has launched numerous new features.

• Among the compacts we cite Mercurine, with an ergonomic shape that falls well within the palm of the hand, and the Tiffany line that features a striking shape.

• For the first time the fair saw the launch of a series of airless cream jars (the Slimline model comes with a side button for accurate dose dispensing).

• Using a mix of wood fibre and “normal” materials such as ABS, SAN or PP, Toly has produced the new stock Bobble compact series (photo). Available in various colors and models, it’s claim to being “eco-friendly” is due to the fact that it is up to 50% made from renewable resources, i.e. wood.

SVILUPPO IN TEAM - Per essere ancora più vicini al cliente e creare soluzioni “su misura”, la divisione Beauty & Home di Valois - produttore di pompe e sistemi di erogazione per l’industria cosmetica e profumiera - ha rafforzato i propri servizi creando lo Specific Development Pole: un team di 25 persone è in grado di seguire le fasi che riguardano la produzione di una bottiglia di profumo (esclusa la realizzazione del flacone di vetro). In questo modo Valois può offrire, con la massima tempestività, una soluzione di packaging completa e gestita interamente al proprio interno, dal design al processo di confezionamento. Tra le numerose proposte, ricordiamo l’ultima creazione firmata Kenzo: un flacone, disegnato da Ron Arad, che si adatta perfettamente alla forma del pollice. Valois ha inventato un sistema spray costituito da nove parti per il campione da 40 ml.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT - To be even closer to the customer and create tailored solutions, the Beauty & Home division of Valois, producer of pumps and dispensing systems for the cosmetics and perfume industry, has reinforced its services with its Specific Development Pole. The team, made up of 25 people, can currently take care of everything when it comes to creating a perfume bottle, with the exception of the actual glass bottle. In this way, Valois can offer a packaging solution managed 100% in-house from the design phase to the packaging process. Of the many proposals on offer it is worth mentioning the latest creation by Kenzo: a bottle designed by Ron Arad which fits the form of your thumb. Valois created an internal spray system with 9 parts for a 40 ml bottle.

Materials & Machinery Bagging well Thanks to a partnership with the Gruppo Deles (Uboldo, VA), producer at world level of bagging systems in APS bags, enters fully onto the Italian market. To seal the agreement, during Ipack-Ima, Deles officially presented the AB180 Onestep of its Autobag range, a bagging machine that uses bag-on-roll for a rapid set-up, quick roll change and a production that touches 80 bags a minute.

From the small and manual PS125 (550 mm x 480 mm by 37 kg) suited for medium-to-low production volumes up to the integrated and automated system, these machines enable the optimisation of processing times, without the conspicuous investments of traditional flat film systems. On all Autobag modules an integrated heat transfer printer can be installed for reproducing logos, barcodes and all other personalised indications.

“Reclosable” technology Mydrin, Italian company of the Bostik group, presents its “Reclosable Technology” devised for food trays and offered as an alternative to reclosable bags using zips, labels or adhesive strips.

These are two hot melt PSA M3156 and M550 adhesives that, used for extrusion in making PE, PP or other films, do not affect the airtight properties of the tray seal, and, at the same time, guarantee easy re-opening after the lid has already been opened for the first time.

The material comes in granules and satisfies the international requisites imposed by the American FDA: the organoleptic properties of the foodstuffs are not altered, the material guarantees preservation with max hygiene, offering excellent transparency and ensuring the reclosing of the trays at least 10 times.

The two variants have different specific qualities of cohesion and adhesion: the M550 offers a more extreme performance, while the M3156, for its lower melt rate, is easier to work. As far as use and functioning is concerned, the adhesive is applied between the seal layer and the layer immediately subsequent to that. After the first opening of the tray, the PSA hot melt layer splits leaving traces on both surfaces, guaranteeing properties of “stickiness” and airtightness in time.

Multimarket Imbustare bene Grazie a una partnership con il Gruppo Deles (Uboldo, VA), il produttore di livello mondiale di sistemi per imballaggio in buste APS entra a titolo nel mercato italiano. A suggellare l’accordo, durante Ipack-Ima, Deles ha presentato in via ufficiale la AB180 OneStep (1), gamma Autobag, imbustatrice che utilizza le buste-in-bobina (bag-on-a-roll) per un set-up rapido, cambi formato veloci e una produzione che tocca gli 80 sacchetti al minuto.

Dalla più piccola e manuale PS125 (550 mm x 480 mm per 37 kg, foto 2) idonea a volumi di produzione mediobassi fino al sistema integrato e automatizzato, queste macchine consentono di ottimizzare i tempi di lavorazione e senza cospicui investimenti per sistemi tradizionali a film steso.

Sui tutti i modelli Autobag è possibile installare una stampante a trasferimento termico integrata per riprodurre loghi, codici a barre e ogni altra indicazione personalizzata.

Tecnologia “richiudibile” Mydrin, società italiana del gruppo Bostik, presenta la sua “Reclosable Technology” studiata per le vaschette di alimenti, e proposta come alternativa alle bustine richiudibili con zip, con etichetta o banda adesiva. Si tratta dei due adesivi hot melt PSA M3156 e M550 che, impiegati per estrusione nella realizzazione di film di PE, PP o altri, non incidono sulle proprietà ermetiche delle saldature delle vaschette e, al contempo, garantiscono l’apertura facilitata dopo che il lid è già stato aperto. Si presentano sottoforma di granuli e soddisfano i requisiti internazionali imposti dalla FDA americana: non alterano le

proprietà organolettiche degli alimenti, ne garantiscono la conservazione con la massima igiene, offrono eccellente trasparenza e assicurano la richiudibilità delle vaschette per almeno 10 volte. Le due varianti hanno diverse qualità specifiche di coesione e adesione: L’M550 offre prestazioni più estreme, mentre l’M3156, per il suo melt index inferiore, si lavora più facilmente.

Quanto all’impiego e al funzionamento, l’adesivo viene applicato tra il layer saldante e il layer immediatamente successivo. Dopo la prima apertura della vaschetta, lo strato di hot melt PSA si divide lasciando traccia su entrambi gli strati, garantendo ancora a lungo proprietà di “appiccicosità” ed ermeticità.

Pilfer proof and convenient The Finnish concern Stora Enso has devised a laminated material called CDM Sinuate capable of making blisters and shell shaped packs pilfer proof and at the same time easy to open. The secret lies in the CDM technology: a thin laminate makes the pack perfectly sealable, the opening of which is made easier at the cash desk, exploiting the delamination of polymers induced through electricity.

It is recommended for use on packs of small but valuable products, (portable phones, MP3 multimedial players, accessories and components for computers and other consumer electronics). In similar applications, the transparent packs have to be protective and difficult to steal, but these same characteristics create problems for the consumer, who finds them difficult to open after purchase. The CDM Sinuate stands as a practical, low-cost, tried and tested solution, combining anti-pilfer features and convenience.

Anti-furto e comodo La finlandese Stora Enso ha messo a punto un materiale accoppiato denominato CDM Sinuate in grado di rendere blister e confezioni “a conchiglia” a prova di furto e al contempo facili da aprire.

Il segreto è nella tecnologia CDM: un sottile accoppiato rende la confezione perfettamente sigillabile, la cui apertura è resa poi agevole durante il passaggio alle casse, sfruttando la delaminazione dei polimeri indotta mediante elettricità. Ne viene suggerito l’impiego sulle confezioni di prodotti piccoli ma di valore, (telefoni portatili, lettori multimediali MP3, accessori e componenti per computer e altri oggetti d'elettronica di consumo). In simili applicazioni, le confezioni trasparenti devono essere protettive e difficili da rubare, ma queste stesse caratteristiche creano problemi al consumatore, che trova difficoltà ad aprirle dopo l'acquisto. Il CDM Sinuate rappresenta una soluzione pratica, conveniente e collaudata, coniugando proprietà anti-furto e comodità.

L’RFID PER IL FASHION Presentati i risultati delle iniziative condotte dal RFID Lab dell’Università di Parma nell’ambito dell’industria della moda (tessile e abbigliamento). Ecco una sintesi. i è concluso il primo anno di attività di ricerca del Board of Advisors Fashion di RFID Lab - Università degli studi di Parma, ovvero il comitato di aziende del comparto tessile e abbigliamento che indirizza le attività di ricerca del laboratorio e che beneficia del relativo trasferimento tecnologico. Due i risultati immediatamente evidenti. Da un lato, è stato completato lo studio “L’impatto della tecnologia RFID nella supply chain fashion”, che ha contribuito a determinare il ritorno dell’investimento derivante dalla gestione della supply chain fashion mediante tecnologia RFID ed EPC Network; a latere, sono stati condotti anche test tecnologici, per valutare le prestazioni dell’RFID applicato ai prodotti tessili. In secondo luogo, grazie alla collaborazione con un pool di partner tecnologici di riferimento, è stato realizzato il progetto “RFID fashion store”: un punto vendita “fashion” gestito tramite tecnologia RFID, in cui toccare con mano e valutare dal punto di vista quantitativo i benefici della tecnologia applicata a livello retail (lo standard di riferimento è l’UHF Class1 Gen2).

L’IMPATTO DELL’RFID NELLA SUPPLY CHAIN

Il progetto di ricerca “L’impatto della tecnologia RFId nella supply chain fashion” ha avuto come obiettivo quello di progettare e verificare la fattibilità tecnico-economica di una soluzione basata su tecnologia RFId per ottimizzare i principali processi logistici forward e backward e di punto vendita della catena logistica. La supply chain esaminata inizia con il ricevimento dei capi ai centri di distribuzione e coinvolge tutti gli attori fino al punto vendita (PV). L’analisi è stata inoltre estesa alla logistica di ritorno dei prodotti resi. La fattibilità è stata valutata in relazione a un’applicazione RFId a livello di pezzo singolo (item), imballo secondario e, dove presente, pallet.

La progettazione ha riguardato aspetti tecnologici (supporti e dispositivi di lettura) e gestionali (BPR - business process reengineering).

A supporto dell'intero progetto, e soprattutto della parte tecnologica e di reingegnerizzazione dei processi, è stata svolta un’estesa attività di testing della tecnologia applicata al prodotto/packaging, svolta presso RFID Lab, per quantificare numericamente le prestazioni.

Mappatura, sperimentazione, modelli Durante la prima fase del progetto (map-

patura “AS IS”), sono state condotte 11 visite sul campo, tra Ce.Di. e punti vendita dei membri del BoA Fashion, corrispondenti a più di 40 ore di rilevazioni dei processi produttivi e logistici e interviste con i responsabili e gli operatori dei sistemi informativi, della logistica e dei punti vendita.

L’analisi ha evidenziato una notevole eterogeneità tecnologica tra le realtà visitate.

In parallelo si sono messe in luce le criticità connesse al sistema logistico produttivo attuale, che provocano inefficienze come incremento delle attività manuali, errori e conseguente aumento dei costi totali logistici del prodotto. Tali criticità hanno rappresentato il punto di partenza della seconda fase, la reingegnerizzazione “to be”.

THE IMPACT OF RFID ON THE SUPPLY CHAIN

The results are in for the initiatives conducted by the University of Parma’s RFID Lab for the fashion industry (textiles and clothing). Here is a summary.

RFID for fashion The first year of research has ended for the Fashion Board of Advisors of the University of Parma’s RFID Lab, a committee of textiles and clothing sector concerns which guides the laboratory’s research activities and benefits from resulting technology transfers. Two results are immediately clear.

On the one hand, the completion of the study “The impact of RFID technology on the fashion supply chain”, which contributed to determining the return on investment of managing the fashion supply chain

with RFID and EPC Network technology; additionally, technological testing was carried out in order to evaluate the performance of RFID on textile products.

Secondly, thanks to a collaboration with a pool of important technology partners, the “RFID fashion store” project was created: a fashion point of purchase managed using RFID technology where the benefits of this technology applied to retail can be experienced firsthand and evaluated in quantitatively (the reference standard is UHF Class1 Gen2).

The research project entitled, “The impact of RFId technology on the fashion supply chain” had the objective of projecting and verifying the technical/economic feasibility of a solution based on RFId technology for optimizing primary forward and backward logistical processes, as well as those of the point of purchase. The supply chain under examination begins with the receival of articles at the distribution centers and involves all agents up to the point of purchase (POP). The analysis also covered the backward logistics of returned products. Feasibility was evaluated in relation to an RFId application at the level of individual item, secondary packaging and, where present, pallet.

The project covered technology (supports and scanning devices) and management (BPR - business process

re-engineering) aspects.

In support of the entire project, especially the technological and process re-engineering part, extensive testing was conducted on the technology applied to the product/packaging at the RFID Lab in order to qualify performance numerically.

Mapping, experimentation, models During the initial phase of the project (“AS IS” mapping), 11 visits in the field were conducted at Distribution Centers and POPs of Fashion BoA members, corresponding to more than 40 hours of observation of productive and logistical processes and interviews with management and employees of information systems, logistics and POPs. Analysis revealed considerable technological heterogeneity between the businesses visited. Meanwhile, critical points related to current production logistics

In particolare la progettazione ha contemplato precise scelte di natura tecnologica e gestionale. Le scelte tecnologiche effettuate sono state costantemente supportate dalla sperimentazione di laboratorio, per verificare in modo oggettivo le prestazioni ottenibili con la soluzione RFId ipotizzata. Sulla base dell’intenso lavoro sperimentale è stato possibile, per ogni processo, identificare una o più configurazioni capaci di garantire un’accuratezza del 100%.

La terza e ultima fase ha visto la creazione di un modello di calcolo avanzato per la fattibilità economica, in cui lo scenario “to be” progettato è stato valutato criticamente, utilizzando tecniche quantitative e

I protagonisti tecnologici - I membri del Board of Advisors Fashion hanno fornito i capi di abbigliamento da utilizzare per le sperimentazioni, mentre un pool di partner tecnologici ha messo a disposizione l’infrastruttura e le risorse hardware e software necessarie.

In particolare, Microsoft e Id-Solutions, spin-off dell’Università degli Studi di Parma, sono alliance partner dell’iniziativa: oltre ad averla finanziata, hanno realizzato un sistema RFId integrato, in grado di gestire i processi di filiera, a partire dalla preparazione dell’ordine e spedizione dei capi dal centro di distribuzione fino al check out sul punto vendita.

La soluzione, sviluppata e integrata dal team di Id-Solutions, si basa su piattaforma Microsoft Biztalk RFId e integra i più avanzati dispositivi RFId forniti dagli altri partner tecnologici, citati di seguito (in ordine alfabetico).

• ADT ha messo a disposizione uno smart shelf RFId, con il quale identificare direttamente i capi presenti sulle scaffalature. L’azienda ha inoltre fornito un sistema anti-taccheggio misto RFId magneto-acustico (distaccatore AMD-3050 Supert Tag Power Detacher, varchi Ultraexit 2M, contapersone CBC-4020 Ultralink) in cui si integra la tradizionale tecnologia magneto-acustica con l’innovativa tecnologia RFId; • Arema ha fornito la propria cassa elettronica di fascia alta (PC Touch Corios e Easy Zaphyr Lite) per effettuare il check out, integrata con lettori RFId; • Jamison Doors ha fornito un portale Gnome RFId, con cui è stato realizzato un varco anti taccheggio basato unicamente su tecnologia RFId; • Mojix ha installato il sistema per gestire in tempo reale l’inventario e localizzare i capi mediante tag passivi. Il sistema è formato da una Star (elemento ricevente) e da sei eNodes che coprono tutto il fashion store; • Tracient ha fornito il lettore brandeggiabile bluetooth Padl-R UF RFId Reader con cui effettuare letture manuali, particolarmente adatto per forma dimensioni e peso a un ambiente retail; • Avery Dennison, Follow me, Lab-Id, Smartres e UPM hanno fornito gli inlay e i tag RFId con cui vengono identificati i capi esposti nell’ambiente demo; • Label Store e SML hanno fornito una serie di tag appositamente convertiti per applicazioni in ambito tessile (etichette composizione, tag logistico in cartone, etichetta tessuto, etc.).

• Sono stati coinvolti 15 processi di cui otto relativi al Ce.Di (ricevimento, storage, inventory, replenishment dell’area di picking, prelievo, packing & marking, spedizioni loading e processi legati ai resi) e sette al punto vendita (ricevimento, operazioni di antitaccheggio, inventory, replenishment, riprezzatura, check out e processi legati ai resi). È importante sottolineare come l’impatto riscontrato sia funzione del livello tecnologico di automazione - molto eterogeneo - delle procedure informative di partenza.

Sono stati poi analizzati in dettaglio due contesti - “the best” e “the worst” - che rappresentano le configurazioni di partenza in cui la tecnologia RFId genera il massimo e il minimo impatto economico.

Chiaramente, tanto più alto è il livello tecnologico di partenza, quanto più basso sarà l’impatto della tecnologia RFId e viceversa.

• Il processo di reingegnerizzazione ha individuato come rappresentativa la filiera composta da un Ce.Di. e 20 punti vendi-

The third and final phase saw the creation of an advanced calculation model for economic feasibility in which the scenario “to be” projected was evaluated critically using quantitative and qualitative criteria. Quantitative analysis was based on the relationship of costs eliminated to costs incurred, and enabled determining the main indicators of economic advantage (ROI, VAN, TIR and PBP). The qualitative analysis, on the other hand, highlighted strategic elements connected with the projected solution for every process examined.

Labeling & Coding Rfid Fashion Store As found in the research, the POP is the element of the supply chain in which the benefits of RFId technology are greatest. For this reason the “RFID Fashion Store” project was initiated, providing for the creation of a retail POP in 1:1 scale to be used as a demonstration area in which the application of RFId hardware and software technologies can be tested and their respective quantitative advantages can be evaluated. It occupies a surface area of circa 30 m2 and is located at the RFID Lab in Parma.

Technology leaders - The members of the Fashion Board of Advisors supplied the articles of clothing to be used for the testing, while a pool of technology partners provided the infrastructure and necessary hardware and software resources.

In particular, Microsoft and Id-Solutions, a spin-off of the University of Parma, are the initiative’s alliance partners: in addition to financing the project, they created an integrated RFId system capable of managing supply chain processes, starting from the preparation of the order and shipping of the articles from the distribution center up to checkout at the POP. The solution, developed and integrated by the Id-Solutions team, is based on a Microsoft Biztalk RFId platform and integrates the most advanced RFId devices supplied by the other technology partners, listed below (in alphabetical order).

• ADT provided an RFId smart shelf for directly identifying shelved articles. The concern also supplied a mixed magnetic/acoustic RFId anti-shoplifting system (AMD-3050 Supert Tag Power Detacher, Ultraexit 2M gates, CBC-4020 Ultralink person counter) in which traditional magnetic/acoustic technology is integrated with the innovative RFId technology; • Arema supplied its own top of the line electronic cash register (PC Touch Corios and Easy Zaphyr Lite) for checkout, integrated with RFId scanners; • Jamison Doors supplied a Gnome RFId gate, with which a 100% RFId-based anti-shoplifting gate was created; • Mojix installed a system for managing in realtime inventory and locating articles using passive tags. The system is composed of a Star (reception component) and six eNodes which cover the entire fashion store; • Tracient supplied the bluetooth Padl-R UF RFId Reader for manual scanning, particularly suitable for shape, size and weight in a retail environment; • Avery Dennison, Follow me, Lab-Id, Smartres and UPM supplied the inlays and RFId tags with which the publicly displayed articles are identified; • Label Store and SML supplied a series of tags specially converted for textiles applications (composition labels, paperboard logistics tags, fabric label etc.).

In entrambi i casi, il 20%25% del costo riguarda il Ce.Di. e il rimanente 75%-80% è relativo alla reingegnerizzazione dei 20 punti vendita.

• In relazione ai flussi di cassa, i risultati appaiono estremamente interessanti sia nel caso di uno scenario AS IS ad alto livello tecnologico (417.000 euro/anno) sia a basso livello tecnologico (1.720.000 euro/anno). In entrambi i casi, la voce preponderante nella definizione dei costi è rappresentata dal costo di acquisto dei tag, che ammonta a 656.000 euro/anno. È però necessario sottolineare l’approccio cautelativo utilizzato per quantificare questa voce: il costo del tag è stato fissato a 0.08 euro/tag, ben al di sopra del recente record di 0.058 $/tag.

Sulla base delle precedenti considerazioni, la supply chain fashion trova convenienza nell’adozione della tecnologia RFId, indipendentemente dal livello tecnologico di partenza. In particolare, un VAN a 5 anni pari a 207.000 euro, un PBP di 5 anni, un TIR del 10.90% e un ROI del 9.09% sono i risultati ottenuti partendo dalla configura==>

Considering the above, the fashion supply chain would benefit from the adoption of RFId technology, regardless of initial technological level.

In particular, a 5 year VAN equal to 207,000 euro, a PBP of 5 years, a TIR of 10.9% and a ROI of 9.09% are the results obtained from the worst case configuration, while a 5 year VAN equal to 3,795,000, a PBP of 3 years, a TIR of 76.2% and a ROI of 76.35% were found for the best case configuration. In an even more cautious hypothesis that does not take into account any increase in revenue due to greater efficiency in logistics and POP processes -thus contrasting with experiences in the field -positive indicators of gains from the investment

In particolare, nel caso the “best” si ha VAN a 5 anni pari a 585.000 euro, un PBP di 4 anni, un TIR del 10.90% e un ROI del 15%.

• È infine importante sottolineare come non sia stato possibile quantificare in termini di impatto economico tutti i vantaggi strategici che l’implementazione della tecnologia RFId è capace di generare. Tra questi, la maggiore accuratezza di ricevimento e spedizione, la possibilità di effettuare controlli estensivi (non a campione) sui flussi di prodotto, la riduzione/eliminazione degli errori di allocazione merci, la possibilità di certificazione RFId del contenuto dei colli imballati, oltre che di effettuare inventari puntuali di riallineamento, la tracciabilità della merce lungo l’intera supply chain (in particolare quella presente nel retro negozio e sull’area espositiva) e, buon ultimo, la ■ lotta alla contraffazione.

• Lastly, it is important to emphasize how it was not possible to quantify in terms of economic impact all of the strategic advantages which implementation of RFId technology is able to generate. These include greater accuracy in receival and shipping, the possibility of conducting extensive controls (as opposed to sample controls) on product flows, the reduction/elimination of goods distribution errors, the possibility of RFId certification of the contents of packaged items, not to mention that of conducting punctual realignment inventories, the traceability of goods throughout the supply chain (in particular in the warehouse and display area) and, last but not least important, combating counterfeiture. ■

Ipack-Ima 2009 è stata l’occasione per presentare l’ampliamento della sezione print/apply di Altech Srl (Bareggio, MI) con due nuove versioni della linea ALcode.

• La prima, denominata ALcode LL (foto 1), si basa su una tecnologia di etichettatura che permette l’uso di materiale adesivo in continuo, senza supporto siliconato e senza fustellatura, con importanti vantaggi per l’utilizzatore (minor costo dell’etichetta), la produttività (maggiore autonomia di lavoro) e l’ambiente (nessuno scarto di materiale). Lo sviluppo del sistema è il risultato di un accordo con Irplast (pioniere e detentrice di brevetti) che ha concesso ad Altech la licenza per lo sfruttamento della tecnologia.

• La seconda soluzione in mostra (foto 2) si chiama ALcode TS (Touch Screen) e prevede l’adozione di una cassetta comandi separata, nella quale è alloggiato un pannello di interfaccia macchina-operatore per la trasmissione di comandi e informazioni in modo facile e intuitivo. Il nuovo quadro può essere posizionato e orientato nella posizione più co- 2 moda, con indubbi vantaggi in fatto di ergonomia. Lo sviluppo della nuova cassetta comandi comporta l’arricchimento delle funzioni della ALcode, che diventa più flessibile e facile da usare, e la semplificazione dell’assistenza tecnica grazie al fatto che le parti elettroniche sono riunite nello stesso vano.

Sleeve “effetto carta” Conferisce al prodotto una connotazione più naturale, mantenendo le caratteristiche e le prestazioni delle classiche etichette tubolari retraibili. La sleeve “effetto carta” è l’ultima novità di FP Sleeve (Vedano Olona, VA), presentata a Ipack-Ima 2009 e realizzata con l’impiego di inchiostri e finiture che hanno permesso di ottenere una resa visiva e tattile simile a quella dei materiali cellulosici. Specializzata nella produzione di “maniche” shrink stampate in roto, la società raccoglie le esigenze espresse dal mercato e lavora a ottimizzare l’uso dei materiali per migliorare il rapporto qualità/prezzo. Inoltre, il reparto R&S mira a valorizzare le caratteristiche di nuovi supporti fra cui emerge l’OPS, proposto come valida alternativa al PVC. La sua offerta comprende sleeve stampate su materiale metallizzato (per una maggiore barriera alla luce) o su film trasparente con inchiostri a effetto metallizzato, perlescente, matt, a specchio e UV luminescenti. Il servizio prevede anche lo sviluppo del progetto, prove di stampa e macchinabilità, prove colore, e soluzioni personalizzate (anche di tiratura e tempi di consegna).

Continuously linerless The recent Ipack-Ima fair in Milan provided Altrech with a good opportunity to display its expanded print/apply section, with two new versions of its ALcode line.

• ALcode LL, based on a labelling technology involving the use of continuous adhesive material, without liner and diecutting, thus offering a few clear advantages for the users, the productivity and the environment: a lower cost per label, increased length of the work runs, and no paper waste.

This system has been developed following a manufacturing transfer agreement between Irplast (a pioneer and patent holder) and Altech.

• ALcode TS “touch-screen”, which has a separated control box equipped with a userfriendly panel displaying a wide range of useful information and

controls for the operator. The new panel can be positioned and oriented in the most comfortable position, thus featuring enhanced ergonomics.

Moreover, the technical assistance is much easier, as all electronic parts are fitted in the control box.

The development of the new control box has further widened the ALcode functions for increased flexibility and userfriendliness.

“Paper effect” sleeves It gives the product a more natural look while maintaining the characteristics and performances of classic tubular shrink labels. appearance and texture similar to those of cellulosic materials.

Moreover, FP Sleeve’s R&D division aims to take advantage of the characteristics of new supports, such as OPS, which is proposed as a valid alternative to PVC. PMR (Bovisio Masciago, MB) updates and expands its range of labeling systems. The concern has been active in this sector and in that of packaging for more than 35 years. There are new print & apply systems, a new range of labeling heads with touch screen operator panel and also important updates on the M3010 automatic line, improved to guarantee greater reliability in the automatic labeling of products of various shapes, not to mention reduced setup times.

Systems custom designed in order to meet a vast array of market requirements, made interesting not only by their good quality/price ratio, but also by the excellent post-sales service provided by the concern in Italy and abroad (supported by a very extensive distribution network), not to mention by flexibility in designing special solutions that boast the concern’s experience and constant attention to quality.

GS1: AGGIORNAMENTI NEL 2010 S econdo Indicod-Ecr (l’organizzazione italiana per la codifica, responsabile dell’assegnazione dei codici e del rispetto delle regole a livello nazionale), il 1° gennaio 2010 dovrebbe essere avviata l’introduzione di un nuovo codice a barre battezzato GS1 DataBar (già noto come RSS - Reduced space symbology).

Messo a punto da GS1 (l’organizzazione internazionale che coordina la diffusione e la corretta implementazione in oltre 100 Paesi dell’omonimo standard, in passato denominato Ean/Ucc), il nuovo codice è frutto di una collaborazione fra produttori, distributori, aziende farmaceutiche, associazioni di categoria e membri del network internazionale GS1. Tra le sue caratteristiche principali ricordiamo le dimensioni contenute: più piccolo rispetto all’Ean/Upc, è però in grado di contenere un maggior numero di informazioni e può essere dunque ap1 plicato ai prodotti più difficili da marcare. Tra i vantaggi del nuovo standard, dunque, si segnala la capacità di “tracciare” un’intera filiera produttiva e di aprire le porte ad attività mirate

di controllo dei flussi logistici e di category management. Come termine di riferimento è stato definito il 2010 per dar modo alle aziende di adeguare al nuovo standard i sistemi di scanning e di data collection, anzitutto nell’identificazione di prodotti freschi, alimenti a peso variabile e farmaci da banco per i supermercati.

«I costi di raccolta e gestione delle informazioni si sono significativamente ridotti dall’introduzione del barcode Ean/Upc», puntualizza sull’house organ di Indicod-Ecr Alain Haberman, presidente della task force GS1 DataBar «inoltre la grande disponibilità di tecnologia, combinata allo sviluppo di efficaci strumenti di identificazione automatica dei prodotti come GS1 DataBar o Epc, possono aumentare ulteriormente il valore e la qualità delle informazioni codificate, raggiungendo livelli impensabili solo qualche anno fa».

GS1: 2010 updates It’s extremely small but can contain a large amount of information; that’s how it can “trace” an entire production chain, improving logistical flow control and opening new doors to category management. We’re expecting it for next year.

According to Indicod-Ecr (the Italian coding organisation, responsible for assigning codes and nationwide regulation), by January 1st, 2010 a new bar code known as GS1 DataBar (already known as RSS - Reduced space symbology) should be up and running.

Developed by GS1 (the international organisation that coordinates the circulation and correct implementation in more than 100 Countries of the standard of the same name, formerly known as Ean/Ucc), the new code is the result of a collaboration between manufacturers, distributors, pharmaceutical concerns, category associations and members of the international GS1 network. Its main characteristics include small dimensions: although smaller than Ean/Ucc, it can

Lo standard di riferimento L’industria della salute sta lavorando a livello globale per definire uno standard internazionale riguardo l’identificazione e la codifica dei prodotti, dei farmaci e dei medical device e, come abbiamo visto, le soluzioni che si vanno accreditando sono basate sull’adozione del codice GS1 DataMatrix. Standard di riferimento sono il GS1 e la sintassi GS1-128 nel caso di confezioni di grandi dimensioni oppure, per le confezioni di piccole dimensioni - un codice a barre bidimensionale, che impiega lo standard GS1 DataMatrix e la sintassi GS1-128. Entrambi fanno perno su un identificativo univoco di prodotto: il GTIN assegnato a ciascun farmaco del produttore e collegato al numero di AIC (autorizzazione all’immissione in commercio) attribuito dal

The set standard The health industry is working on a global scale to define an International standard regarding the identification and coding of products, drugs and medical devices, and, as we have seen, the solutions garning recognition are based on the adoption of the DataMatrix GS1 code. The set standards are GS1 and the GS1-128 syntax in the case of large dimension packaging or, for small dimension packaging - a two-dimensional bar code that employs DataMatrix GS1 standard and the GS1-128 syntax. Both depend on a unique product identification code: the GTIN assigned to each of a manufacturer’s drugs and connected with the AIC (“commerce authorization”) code issued by the Ministry of Health; the expiry date and lot number can also be printed.

What it is - GS1 DataBar is a linear bar code which uses the application identifiers already employed by GS1-128 symbologies to encode, in an extremely reduced space, the GTIN as well as supplementary information (e.g. lot number, net weight, price etc.).

Data di adozione - A partire dal 1° gennaio 2010, la simbologia GS1 DataBar andrà ad affiancare - su base volontaria! - la simbologia EAN/UPC nella codifica dei prodotti in vendita presso la grande distribuzione organizzata. La data del 2010 è stata fissata per consentire alle aziende di adeguare i propri sistemi di scanning e data collection al nuovo standard.

Si tratta del logger di temperatura a marchio Easy2Log© modello A927Z: un tag semi passivo UHF a basso costo, che consente di monitorare i prodotti sensibili alla temperatura durante le fasi di trasporto o stoccaggio.

Technical characteristics Easy2Log is compatible with the EPC C1G2/ISO18000-6C protocol, operates with a frequency range of 860-928 MHz, with a scanning distance of circa 10 m in area (2.5 on metal) at 2 W ERP. The temperature gap ranges from 20 to 70 °C, with an accuracy of 0.1 °C in a temperature range of between -10 and 40 °C, and of 0.2 °C under other conditions.

Questo il progetto sviluppato nel magazzino torinese di Iveco da Kuehne+Nagel, attore di statura mondiale nel campo della logistica, in collaborazione con la stessa Iveco e con Alfaproject.net, che è valso alla società il “2009 RFId Italia Award” nella categoria Miglior Progetto Aziendale (assegnato in giugno durante il Summit RFId Italia organizzato dal Lab#ID dell’Università Carlo Cattaneo - LIUC di Castellanza, VA). Reduced end-of-line footprint Baumer (Castelfranco Emilia, MO) is presenting its new generation of wrap around casepacking and heatshrink bundling machines with some advanced technological features: the operator control panel offers a series of utilities that facilitate format change, diagnostics and analysis of productivity; the 90° patented feed system means any product can be processed (including parallepids, ovals and particularly unstable shapes) with heatshrink film or wrap-around board in extremely tight spaces, in that a product channel divider is not required. This special system enables the production of continuous motion through a rotating thruster that, maintaining constant speed, guides the product without applying pressure and guarantees the absorption of two or more production lines.

Among the common features of Baumer machines one has: synchronisation of mechanical

In attesa di brevetto, manipola il prodotto una sola volta durante la preparazione dello strato (e questo è il suo punto di forza). Il prodotto viene posto su tapparelle mobili sincronizzate con i robot di preparazione, il tutto viene quindi trasferito al robot di palettizzazione, che preleva la tapparella e il prodotto. Nella fase di deposito il robot muove la tapparella che rilascia il prodotto sul pallet. Il prodotto è guidato dai compattatori regolabili posti sulla testa del robot. Dragon, nel ritorno, rilascia la tapparella vuota nella catenaria sotto al punto di prelievo e successivamente riprende la tapparella con il prodotto pronto. Vengono così risolti i problemi di formazione strato, incrociando gli strati in modo da aumentare la stabilità del pallet ed eliminando il più possibile le falde tra gli strati, lavorando sino a 200 confezioni/min. Il prodotto inoltre non subisce sfregamenti durante la fase di preparazione dello strato, e quindi non si deteriora. L’utilizzo di Dragon accorcia drasticamente la linea di pallettizzazione, mantenendo la massima flessibilità ad alta velocità.

Palletising in beverage Dragon Tapparella© is a hi-speed palletiser robot, particularly suited for the beverage industry, recently launched by Elettric 80 (Viano, RE).

Patent pending, it handles products once only while preparing the layer

(and this is its strongpoint). The product is placed on mobile, slats synchronised with the preparation robot, all subsequently transferred to the palletisation robot, that picks up the slat and the product. In the downput phase the robot moves the slat that releases the product on the pallet. The product is guided by adjustable compactors placed on the robot head. On the return movement Dragon releases the empty slat into the catenary duct under the pick-up point to subsequently re-engage the slat loaded with product.

Thus layer formation problems are solved by cross layering so as to increase pallet stability, eliminating the dividers between the layers where possible, processing up to 200 packs/min. The product what is more is not harmed by scratching or scraping during the layer preparation phase. The use of Dragon drastically shortens the palletisation line, maintaining max. flexibility at high speed.

And to be certain that the result is always up to scratch, or that the complex movements of the hot stamping machines of the precious brand are masterfully harmonised and controlled, the supplier has chosen to fit itself out with a high

grade motion control system, that is to say the PMC of the German concern Pilz (Italian headquarters in Novedrate, CO) combined with the control and servodrive technique made by the same company. These are the reasons behind this choice.

OBJECTIVE PRECISION Ungerechts Maschinenbau GmbH (Mönchengladbach, D) is specialised in the building of machines for producing cellulose based packaging.

Its “products”, normally demand the coordination of a great quantity of drives, to guarantee the same the German company has adopted the Pilz motion control solution (also usable for complex automation like

functioning via controller and the movement of high dynamic drives, including all aspects governing safety). «This choice - as Rainer Ungerechts, general head of the company bears witness to - was seen to be all the more precious when we began designing the new hot stamping machine on which we make the packs for our high ranking confectionery customer.

In this type of working, in fact, two results need to be guaranteed aboveall: the absolute accuracy of the positioning and the application of the gold lamina on the preprinted gloss wrapping material, with the maximum reduction possible of waste that, here more than elsewhere, generates high costs».

LA STAMPA A CALDO In sostanza, la macchina è costituita da due sistemi avvolgitore/svolgitore a rulli uno per il materiale da incarto e uno per la sottile lamina d’oro - e dall’unità per la stampa a caldo. Il materiale per l’imballaggio è prestampato e segnato con i marcatori che indicano la posizione finale del marchio dorato e in rilievo. Nel caso in esame il materiale è largo 33 centime-

tri, ma la macchina è in grado di operare con rulli larghi fino a un metro.

Ecco come funziona. L’azionamento del rullo avvolgitore stabilisce il ritmo della lavorazione: è la cosiddetta parte “master” del sistema, e avvolge 80 metri di materiale al minuto, a ritmo costante. Tutti gli altri azionamenti, di fatto, sono parti “slave” e si adattano al ritmo dell’avvolgitore.

Fra le altre funzioni assicurate dalla macchina occorre menzionare almeno il corretto tensionamento della bobina di materiale cartaceo da sovrastampare in oro, e la determinazione del diametro del materiale in ogni fase di avvolgimento, in funzione del diametro del rullo.

Il cuore del processo avviene nell’unità di stampa a caldo, dove il materiale per l’imballaggio passa, a velocità costante, sullo stampo che determina il rilievo. A intervalli regolari, lo stampo si attiva e - con precisione estrema - applica la quantità esatta di foglia dorata necessaria a realizzare lo stemma nel punto previsto; in seguito, con la stessa accuratezza viene eseguito il rilievo nel foglio d’oro. Un sensore controlla in continuo la posizione del materiale e lo riallinea automaticamente ad ogni eventuale spostamento.

IL RUOLO DEL MOTION CONTROL A provider of automation safety solutions, Pilz offers components that can be implemented in systems singly or in combination with others: sensors; motion control devices; control and measuring devices and systems; control and indicator buttons; and software.

HOT STAMPING Basically, the machine is made up of two roller winding/unwinding systems - one for wrapping materials and one for the thin gold lamina - and by the hot stamping unit. The packaging material is preheated and marked with markers that indicate the final position of the gold relief brand. In the case in question the material is 33 cm wide, but the machine is capable of operating with rollers of up to a metre wide.

This is how it works. The winder roller drive sets the work pace: this is the socalled “master” part of the system, and winds 80 metres of material a minute, at a constant pace. All the other drives, are slave parts and adapt to the pace of the winder.

Among the other functions ensured by the machine one should at least mention the correct tensioning of the roll of paper material to be overprinted in gold, and the reading of the diameter of the material in all stages of the winding phase, in relation to the diameter of the roller.

The heart of the process is in the hot stamping unit, where the packaging material passes over the mould that gives the relief at a constant speed. At regular intervals, the mould is activated and - with extreme accuracy the exact quantity of gold foil required to make the crest in the preset point is applied; following on from that, the gold foil relief is attained with the same accuracy.

A tutta sicurezza (integrata) L’integrazione della sicurezza nell’azionamento - anche detta safe motion - assicura tempi di reazione più rapidi e costi ridotti, senza necessità di ulteriori componenti esterni. Questa tecnologia apre, dunque, nuovi orizzonti all’interazione tra uomo e macchina, permettendo di effettuare impostazioni in tutta semplicità a una velocità ridotta, ovvero in sicurezza, anche con i ripari aperti. I tempi di allestimento quindi si riducono, e la disponibilità della macchina aumenta, così come la sua produttività.

Pilz presenta la sua linea di servo-drive, denominati PMCprotego DS, utilizzabili anche come interruzione di emergenza, controllo sicuro del movimento e frenatura in sicurezza.

Eccone le principali, moltelici, funzioni.

• Disattivazione coppia in sicurezza - Interruzione sicura dell’alimentazione al motore direttamente nel servo-drive; non causa movimenti pericolosi.

• Arresto in sicurezza 1 - Il movimento viene rallentato in maniera controllata, ad esempio tramite pulsante di interruzione d’emergenza o interrompendo una barriera fotoelettrica, così da indurre il “controllo motore fermo”. Anche in questo caso, l’azionamento, che avviene in fermo macchina, non può generare movimenti pericolosi.

• Arresto in sicurezza 2 - Il movimento del motore viene rallentato e quindi portato in “controllo motore fermo”. In questo stato, le funzioni di comando dell’azionamento restano disponibili.

• Controllo motore fermo - È parte della funzione “Arresto in sicurezza 2”; controlla la posizione di arresto raggiunta dall’asse e ne impedisce lo spostamento dall’area di posizione sicura.

• Velocità limitata in sicurezza - Questa funzione controlla che l’azionamento non superi la velocità massima predefinita: in caso di superamento, l’azionamento viene disattivato.

L’operatore può avvicinarsi alla zona pericolosa senza dover arrestare la macchina.

• Range velocità di sicurezza - Rinforza la funzione precedente, effettuando anche il controllo della velocità minima.

Non è possibile superare la velocità massima né la minima stabilite, altrimenti l’azionamento si disattiva.

• Direzione sicura del movimento - Garantisce che il movimento di un motore avvenga in un’unica (e definita) direzione, altrimenti l’azionamento viene disattivato.

• Comando sicuro dei freni - Consente di comandare i freni in sicurezza e di evitare quindi la caduta di carichi sospesi.

Per calcolare il livello di sicurezza di un freno è necessaria questa funzione.

• Test di sicurezza dei freni - Rileva eventuali guasti del sistema frenante o nella meccanica dei freni stessi, e consente anche di aumentare il livello di sicurezza, ad esempio nelle applicazioni con carichi sospesi.

This synchronism is the result of delicate “adjustments”: the embossing cylinder has a circumference of 350 mm and initially rotates without contact at constant speed; subsequently it accelerates up to rotating synchronously and comes into contact with the packaging material.

All-round integrated safety Integrated drive safety - also called safe motion ensures speedier reaction times at lower costs, without the need for further external components.

This technology at any rate opens new horizons to man-machine interaction, enabling settings to be made simply and at a reduced speed, or that is safely, even with the protective gates open. Hence set up times are reduced, and the machine’s availability as well as productivity increases.

Pilz will be presenting its servodrive line, called PMCprotego DS, also usable as emergency stop, safe control of movement and safe braking.

Here are the main multiple functions.

• Safe torque off - Safe interruption of motor power directly in the servodrive; does not cause hazardous movements.

• Safety stop 1 - The movement is slowed down in a controlled manner, for example via emergency stop button or interrupting a photoelectric barrier, so as to trigger “the motor stop control”. In this case too, the drive, that is shut down safely when the machine has run down fully, does not generate dangerous movements.

• Safety stop 2 - The movement of the motor is slowed down and hence brought to “motor stop control”: in this state, the drive command functions are still operational.

• Motor stop control - This is part of the “Safety stop 2” function; it controls the stop position reached by the axis and stops any shifting from the safe position area.

• Safety limited speed - This function controls that the drive does not exceed the max preset speed: if this is exceeded, the drive switches off. The operator can access the danger area without the machine being stopped.

• Safety speed range - This reinforces the preceding function, also controlling the minimum speed. The max and min set speeds cannot be superseded; in these cases the drive switches off.

• Safe direction of movement - Guarantees that the movement of a motor occurs in a single (and defined) direction. Otherwise the drive switches off.

• Safe brake control - enables safe commanding of brakes and avoids any falling of suspended loads. To calculate the level of safety of a brake this has to be functioning.

• Safe brake test - Shows up any brake system failings or failings in the mechanical brake parts, also enabling an increase in the safety levels, for example in applications with suspended loads.

At this point, the relief mould detaches from the paper and slows down, going over to stand-by; when the subsequent crest is carried out the process starts up over again.

SIMPLICITY The accuracy of the motion control is ensured by the “open” hardware and software. But this is not the only advantage of this solution: the Pilz system - the people at Ungerechts underline - is also easy to use and intuitive.

The central element of the automaton is the Pilz PMCprimo 16+ controller, thanks to which the complex multiaxial motion control functions are implemented. The curves needed for the cycle are defined in the simplest of ways: the operator inserts the data set in the terminal (length of

packaging, position of the section to be relief printed, etc.) and the system calculates the movement profile for the running time.

È partito l’8 giugno da Torino l’Automation Roadshow di Bosch Rexroth che, attraversando la Penisola da nord al sud, intende presentare dal vivo le soluzioni per l’automazione industriale, approfondendo le tematiche legate alla connettività delle soluzioni Rexroth e a tutti i vantaggi che derivano dall’integrazione tra tecnologie per tutti i settori industriali. In cinque tappe, in mostra sul truck l’ampio ventaglio di prodotti e soluzioni Bosch Rexroth: in particolare l’intera gamma di controlli e azionamenti elettrici con il nuovissimo Frequency Converter FE, l’Indradrive CS con interfaccia Ethernet multiprotocollo e i sistemi di avvitatura.

Il Siplace SX messo a punto da Siemens Electronics Assembly Systems (SEAS) è un modulo di montaggio che si adatta alle svariate richieste e necessità dell’industria elettronica (1). Si tratta della prima macchina con tecnologia full gantry modularity che garantisce l’eliminazione di costose riconfigurazioni delle vecchie linee SMT. Realizzata per creare un nuovo concetto di produzione nell’industria elettronica, rappresenta una soluzione efficiente in grado di soddisfare i frequenti cambi di prodotto e le più svariate richieste del mercato. La macchina è la prima stazione di montaggio al mondo i cui portali possono essere sostituiti in meno di 30 minuti, da un solo operatore e con un facile sistema di scambio. Questo approccio costruttivo di portale permette di dissociare la prestazioni di montaggio dalla capacità (dei componenti), mettendole entrambe a disposizione sulla linea in base alla necessità.

Automation on the road Technological integration and systems for connectivity on the road: June 8th the Bosch Rexroth Automation Roadshow starts off from Turin, first stop in a schedule that will take it right down the Italian Peninsula, giving a live presentation of industrial automation, going into topics linked to the connectivity of Rexroth solutions and all the advantages that derive from technological integration for all industrial sectors.

Structured in five stages, the truck will show the main elements in the broad array of Bosch Rexroth products and solutions: in particular spotlight on the entire range of electrical controls and drives with the brand new FE Frequency Converter along with the Indradrive CS with multiprotocal Ethernet interface and screw systems.

Also on show the latest developments in pneumatic solutions and line technology, to confirm the value of integration between, electronics, pneumatics and mechanics. After Turin the roadshow, providing a sectorial view in line with the orientation of the concern, is scheduled to stop off in Cernusco sul Naviglio (Bosch Rexroth’s Italian headquarters, Milan), Padua, Bologna and Rome.

The Siplace SX devised by the Siemens Electronics Assembly Systems (SEAS) is an assembly module that is suited to the various demands and needs of the electronics industry (1). It is the first machine with full gantry modularity technology that guarantees the elimination of costly reconfiguration of old SMT lines. Made to create a new concept of production in the electronics industry, it stands as an efficient solution capable of satisfying the frequent product changes and the most varied market demands. The machine is the first assembly station in the world whose portals can be replaced in less than 30 minutes by a single operator and with an easy exchange system. The portal construction approach enables the assembly performances to be disassociated from the capacity (of the components), making both available on the line according to contingent needs.

Another new feature in the Siplace range is Siplace MultiStar, the first placement head that combines the Collect & Place modes operating in mixed mode, combining speed and flexibility in a single assembly cycle.

In the software and service field, the new Siplace Feeder Care (2)was also been presented, with which the productivity of the SMT lines can be increased integrating all the most important procedures within the feeder care process, effectively and preventively seeing to feeder maintenance, thus eliminating costly downtime during production.

La TB3 messa a punto da Gandus (Cornaredo, MI) è una termosaldatrice a impulsi per la chiusura e la codifica di tubetti di plastica (1). Semiautomatica, a funzionamento elettromagnetico, è semplice e compatta e può saldare tubetti di lunghezza compresa tra i 100 e i 230 mm; disposti nei caricatori, i tubetti vengono portati in posizione di saldatura con un particolare sistema leva-eccentrico (un set di due caricatori è incluso in ciascuna macchina). È disponibile anche in una versione completa di sistema di codifica a punzoni, in grado di imprimere, in fase di chiusura, un codice alfanumerico di max 10 caratteri all’interno della fascia di saldatura. High performance image processing The iMage S company (Mariano Comense, CO) proposes itself to the Italian market as a distributor of image processing products selected to resolve vision issues in various markets: industrial, military, medical and scientific. A recent proposal is the 10.1 version of Common Vision Blox (CVB), a library of instruments for programming and developing machine vision applications by the renowned European supplier Stemmer Imaging.

Bench heatsealing machine for tubes The TB3 developed by Gandus (Cornaredo, MI) is an impulse heatsealing machine for closure and coding of plastic tubes (1).

Semi-automatic, with electromagnetic functioning, it is simple and compact and can seal tubes with a length between 100 and 230 mm; laid onto the loaders, the tubes are placed in sealing position with a special odd-removal system (each

machine includes a set of two loaders).

It is also available in a version complete with a punch coding system able to imprint, in the closure phase, an alphanumerical code of up to 10 characters inside the sealing band.

An important accessory proposed by gandus is the new VM/300 T.B.P. semi-automatic table doser unit (2), suitable for medium-low runs of cream, fluid or semi-fluid products. Complete with bypass valve head for dense products, 30 l stainless steel hopper, stainless steel tabletop base with command pedal, air feed attachment with filter, pressure reduction unit, manometer and air exclusion sleeve valve, screw nozzle.

Fingerprints for medical products AlpVision, a Swiss concern specialized in security and anticounterfeiture systems for

branded products and valuable documents, launches at Interphex (New York, July ’09) the world première of a new patented system against counterfeiting of tablets, which complements already existing protection systems dedicated to pharmaceuticals that operate on primary packaging (blisters) and secondary packaging (cases).

It’s not by chance that the solution takes the name of Fingerprint™: the exact shapes of the mould used by the manufacturer for the tablets are memorized in an image database and later used to verify product authenticity using a normal office scanner. Verification is thus based on the unique shapes that distinguish the moulds and specific settings used by the tablet manufacturer.

The system is offered to licensed users with the corresponding software.

Lenze Gerit presents the BFK458-xxL brake (where “L” stands for Long Life), specially designed for repetitive applications that require durability and reliability in the component. The L version of this brake, in fact, has numerous technical improvements that combat wear and tear: the thrust disc is low play and has a reinforced torque support; the springs are equipped with pivot guides and deeper holes in order to increase resistance to cutting; the rotor is attached to the hub through an intermediary serrated polyamide ring which reduces friction and play.

What results is an increase in component life, measured in number of interventions admitted (tenfold): from 1 to 4 million with a standard brake; from 10 to 15 million with BFK 458 xxL. There’s no doubt about product quality: it is accompanied by a two year guaranty, which includes the new piece and flat rate replacement service.

A multi-purpose rewinder

Impiegata con funzioni di controllo, opera tramite fotocellula (in versione a ultrasuoni per etichette trasparenti) e non richiede alcun settaggio. Il controllo tramite microprocessore permette di impostare il contapezzi e la velocità di ribobinatura, e di fermare il motore a bobina ultimata in caso di rottura della carta o di mancanza di etichette.

Wide Range (Cusago, MI) has developed RW Counter Check, a multi-purpose instrument for pressure sensitive labels that enables rewinding reels clockwise or counterclockwise onto chucks of various diameter (46110 mm), counting labels in progressive or regressive mode and, finally, verifying the presence of labels and halting the process if one is missing. Impreglon (in Italia a Lainate, MI) offre un aiuto concreto ai produttori di film, molto spesso alle prese con problemi di usura dei rulli. Su sollecitazione di una società svedese, ha infatti rivestito i rulli con PlasmaCoat (rivestimento ceramico particolarmente duro), consentendo agli operatori di tagliare il film con utensili affilati e appuntiti senza più preoccuparsi di danneggiarne la superficie. A oggi, gli interventi del genere sono stati circa 70, in tutta Europa: in questi casi, il ricorso al rivestimento ha consentito di evitare costose riparazioni ai rulli rovinati dai tagli (che, per inciso, possono distorcere e sgualcire il film, interrompendo i processi produttivi), a tutto vantaggio della sicurezza degli operatori, che non corrono più il rischio di ferite provocate dal logoramento della superficie dei rulli. Il rivestimento può essere anche impregnato con un prodotto antiaderente, variante ideale quando la superficie della plastica è stampata o appiccicosa.

Nilpeter (ufficio italiano ad Assago, MI), ha messo a punto nuove tecnologie per la stampa flexo UV e inkjet e, in particolare, delle unità servo-guidate per le macchine da stampa FB-3300 per etichettifici e trasformatori di packaging. Rivisitate con l’obiettivo primario di velocizzare i cambi lavoro e, in particolare, la sostituzione dei cilindri, hanno una luce massima di 420 mm e lavorano a 228 m/min. Le lampade per l’essiccazione UV sono integrate con cilindri raffreddati ad acqua per le lavorazioni di materiali sensibili al caldo; fra gli optional si trovano, inoltre, moduli per l’applicazione di foil a caldo e per la stampa serigrafica.

Fra le ultime realizzazioni della multinazionale di origine danese, e oggi prim’attore globale nelle macchine da stampa a banda stretta, figurano inoltre la piattaforma Caslon, che combina stampa inkjet drop-on-demand con una o più unità di stampa flexo e di coating e con taglierine rotative, e la FG-Line, che rappresenta una via di mezzo fra la più semplice FA-Line e la FB-Line ad altissime prestazioni (foto), dotata di unità di stampa con doppio servo drive e attrezzata con maniche leggere allo stato dell’arte.

Scanning transparent or reflecting objects An optic design which guarantees high performance in scanning transparent, translucent or reflecting objects, including those of irregular shape and with a response time of 500 microseconds. These, put briefly, are the most important characteristics of the new QS30ELVC series of sensors presented by Banner Engineering* (in Italy Turck Banner Srl, with headquarters in Bareggio, MI).

The QS30ELVC series is part of the family of sensors with Banner WorldBeam® universal plugs; equipped with a case designed for use in difficult environments and adaptable for working at high speeds, these sensors are suitable for bottling, food and beverage packaging, but also in the verification of transparent plastic pouches containing pharmaceuticals and other products. Each sensor has three thresholds which can be selected in

order to optimize performance in scanning a wide range of objects.

Configuration requires simply aligning the sensor with the target and setting the commutation point (using a button or remote control with wire). The configurations are then maintained when the system is turned off and are modified only if the sensor or reflector is moved. An automatic algorithm compensates the effects of dust, contamination and changes in room temperature.

The compact case is equipped with a display with large bar graphics which are easily visible to simplify configuration and monitoring of signal intensity during operation. It is moreover classified IP67 (NEMA 6) and can resist an 8.3 Pa wash according to NEMA PW12.

Swedish company, the concern in fact coated rollers with PlasmaCoat (a hard ceramic coating), enabling operators to cut films with sharp and pointed tools without the worry of damaging the surface. As of today, interventions of this type have been circa 70 across Europe: in these cases, the use of coating has enabled the prevention of costly repairs to rollers worn out with cuts (which, incidentally, can twist and wrinkle the film, interrupting productive processes), benefiting the safety of the operators, who no longer run the risk of wounds inflicted by the worn surface of the rollers. particular, some servo-guided units for FB-3300 printers for packaging converters and labelers. Revamped with the primary objective of speeding the changeover process and, in particular, cylinder replacement, they have a maximum width of 420 mm and work at 228 m/min. The UV drying lamps are integrated with water cooled cylinders for processing heat sensitive materials; other optionals include modules for hot foil application and silkscreen printing.

The creations of the Danish multinational, today a global leader in narrow web printing machines, include the Caslon platform, which combines drop-on-demand inkjet printing with one or more flexo printing, coating and rotary slitter units, and the FG-Line, which represents a halfway point between the simpler FA-Line and the high performance FB-Line (photo), equipped with double servo drive printing unit and state-of-the-art light sleeves.
