The mental and physical benefits of sunshine can’t be disputed - just ask all of the Canadian ‘snow birds’ that head down south each year as our days become shorter. It’s been proven that when we surround ourselves with nature, sunshine and clean air we improve our sleep, our cardiovascular health and our stress levels. These days, as we spend so much of our days with our faces basking in the glow of a computer screen, it only becomes more important to enjoy the benefits of outdoor living.
More than ever, home building and renovation choices reflect this desire to experience the natural light and fresh air that outdoor living offers. Heath Pierson, owner of Blue Ridge Builders, knows first-hand how a functional outdoor space encourages homeowners to spend more time outdoors.
“There is no doubt that a home with a functional and comfortable outdoor area leads people to spend more time outside,” says Pierson. “Utilizing this space on your property just makes sense – it can expand the entire living area of your home.”
“A nice deck or backyard retreat, with a barbeque and comfortable seating will add to your quality of life.”
Although backyard living is important, Pierson stresses that people should not forget about the front of the home. “It’s all about curb appeal of course,” he says.

“The front of your home is what everybody sees when they’re driving down the road and when they’re coming to your house. It needs to be both functional and attractive.” At The Real Home Show, Blue Ridge Builders will have experts on hand to answer consumers questions on any deck-related project. They invite you to come ask about your dream deck reno or build, or about any framing, garages and indoor and outdoor

All-Craft Decks and Sunrooms, a full service outdoor living renovation contractor, will also be returning to The Real Home Show. At their booth you can talk to staff about all aspects of creating or renovating decks, sunrooms, gazebos, screen porches and more, from design to completion.
““We have a full design service that provides a client with numerous options, either complete plan drawings or as full 3-D colour renderings if they want to see a lifelike image before the project begins,” says Brian Johnson, All-Craft’s project consultant. “This alleviates a lot of worries about what the finished project will look like once it all comes together.”
At The Real Home Show, All-Craft will be showcasing a variety of products, from outdoor LED lighting systems to a “full display of alternative decking and railing products,” says Johnston. Specifically, AllCraft will have displays featuring the top
composite deck materials, including Trex, AZEK and TimberTech, as well as exterior shades – the newest trend hitting outdoor living spaces.
“Outdoor shades are really popular,” says Johnson. “They are the ideal solution for blocking heat and the glare of mother nature. Exterior roller shades can be used in decks, screened porches, pergolas and other outdoor patio structures.”
All-Craft will also have examples of Regal’s Crystal Railings (which offer a railing and post-free view with extra-thick tempered glass) and a remote-controlled, louvered roof system which controls the amount of sunlight coming in. This feature can also be programmed to work with a home automation system. They can even tell you about their custom tree houses and play areas!
Open-air family living experts Archadeck will also be at the Show. This award-winning company knows how important finding sanctuary in this busy world is to families. Maurice Meagher, the owner of Archadeck Nova Scotia, is excited to showcase the latest in outdoor products, including new low- maintenance railing profiles - both composite and aluminum. A stop by their booth will also give you a look at cable railing, which the local building code department now allows to be installed in our region.
“We will also be showing new pressuretreated wood in a cedar colour, and will feature the new colours and profiles of composite decking,” says Meagher. “As well, you can feel welcome to browse our photo portfolio of some of our more recent deck, screen porch, patio, and sunroom projects.”
“It’s also important for homeowners to realize they don’t always need to start from scratch,” explains Meagher. “We have examples of fantastic outdoor living areas that were created using existing structures. Sometimes building on is just as good as building new.”
