Franklin won three games in 2018, but the Knights could take a big step forward this fall with an experienced team back, including all-time passer Ian Haynes leading a high-powered passing game. Haynes is already third in District 10 history with 6,906 passing yards and has thrown 71 touchdown passes in three seasons. He threw for 2,398 yards and 25 touchdowns as a junior, and if the Knights make a run this season, he could approach 10,000 career passing yards. Franklin’s leading rusher last year, Eli Stewart, is back after rushing for 219 yards and two touchdowns on 46 carries, while Cade Adams returns after a breakout sophomore season with 49 catches for 976 yards and 10 touchdowns. Dorian Gordon is also back after hauling in 34 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns, but the Knights will have to replace Trey Carulli, who finished with 32 catches for 520 yards and four touchdowns. With Gordon and Stewart in the backfield and Dalton Buckley and Adams at wide receiver, the Knights have some talented offensive pieces in place. Franklin also brings back Holden Cook at fullback and Josh Nettles, Cole Docter, Ryan Wood, Dustin McMullen and Jordan Slagle on the offensive line. The Knights also return most of their starters on defense although they struggled defensively as a team in 2018. Buckley, Adams, Stewart and Gordon are back in the secondary, Haynes, Cool, Michael Long and Wyatt Wadding return at linebacker and Nettles, Doctor and Wood are returnees on the defensive line. Nettles had 75 tackles, while Wadding had 52, Docter had 47 and Stewart had 44. Franklin will have to replace its top two tacklers in Dominic Miller (115) and Mason Powers (90), but Wood had a breakout freshman season with five sacks and Nettles had four. Aaron Burkhardt, Carson Wible and Slagle are all underclassmen who could step up in a big way this year. Franklin has one of the top passers in D-10, along with an experienced backfield and a solid line back this season. The Knights went through some growing pains last year, but they could pay off this fall.
