Hickory had a rare down season in 2018 and will be under new leadership as Bill Dungee takes over as the head coach. Dungee coached with Jarrett Samuels at Farrell and with Jim Wildman at Sharon before applying at Hickory. The Hornets won just two games last year and missed the District 10 playoffs. Hickory had a quarterback change during the 2018 season that could pay off this fall. Michael Henwood threw for 592 yards and five touchdowns on 44-of-96 passing as a sophomore. He is a top returning player for the Hornets after leading the team in rushing with 197 yards and one touchdown. The Hornets have several weapons for Henwood to utilize, including Hunter Stoots, Kam Fisher and Braelin Stewart at running back, Julian Burns and Nate Richards at wide receiver and Rocco Iacino at tight end. The offense also has Dalton Beatty back on the line, but rebuilding the rest of the offensive line was a big priority in camp. The Hickory defense has five starters back and several players to fill in some holes. Stoots and Iacino are back to lead the linebackers, with Henwood, Fisher, Richards, Stewart and Burns in the secondary and Beatty on the line. Kuldera Delgros led Hickory with 128 tackles but is gone to graduation, while Iacino had 72 and Stoots had 70. The Hornets could receive contributions from new and younger players, including sophomores Ramarion Whitehead, Jackson Pryts, Clay Wiesen, Joey Fazzone, Sammy Mancino, Nick Maule and junior Matty Cannone. Hickory has depth at the skill positions, including state track and field medalists. The biggest priority for Dungee will be to rebuild the offensive and defensive lines. If the Hornets can open some holes and buy into Dungee’s system, they could return to contender status this fall.
