2010 PARSONS A AS GR APHIC DESIGN
FROM THE DEAN_
The AAS Graphic Design program is an important part of the School of Art, Media, and Technology here at Parsons. The school is a locus where varying disciplines, ranging from the experimental to the practical, interact and coalesce into a shared optimism about the role of design in a global context. AAS students bring to this community their experience in a variety of fields, a hunger to learn more about design-specific domains such as typography or interaction design, and broad interests in humanitarian design, social technologies, and global exchange. The result of that interaction is what you see here: a clear demonstration of their potential for positive impact on the real world, presented here with great pride. –Sven Travis
001
It is with great pleasure that I share with you the work of our most recent AAS Graphic Design graduates. Once again, dozens of students have come from around the world and gathered here to broaden their horizons, gain professional expertise, and, most importantly, realize their commitment to change within this intense and accomplished program.

FROM THE DIRECTOR_ What’s dawned on the business world in the past decade is something that we’ve known for far longer: that creativity is key to running a successful business. Good design is good business. Design thinking means researching, innovating, prototyping, and questioning all assumptions but one: that every process and product can be made better. Our graduates learn this lesson well. They leave us with the ability to design, of course, but what’s more, they learn to think as designers think. That, combined with their previous degrees and rich life experiences, is a recipe for success. And the stories of our most recent graduates that are presented in this book bear it out. To showcase earlier alumni’s accomplishments would require a book on it’s own. This said, we do not focus on the past successes as much as we implement new thoughts and ideas to remain on the forefront of innovation.
2010 PARSONS A AS GR APHIC DESIGN
As I said before, excellent individuals make for a successful program. In addition to our incredible staff, there are dozens of dedicated instructors, and legions of hardworking and talented students. The thing that binds all of us together -- all of us -- is a compulsive pursuit of excellence. Yes. In AAS Graphic Design, excellence is a habit! –Katarzyna Gruda
003
No program runs itself, and no director of a program is alone responsible for its success. A secret to effective leadership is to hire excellent individuals and to let them do their job. One of those excellent people -- most excellent people -is Thomas Bosket, Assistant Professor in General Studio and the Coordinator of Graphic Design and General Studio in AAS. Thomas is my left hand (he’s lefthanded and I am right-handed), and our seamless partnership goes back over a dozen of years. In addition to being a great person to work with, Thomas is an outstanding teacher, the recipient of the prestigious teaching excellence award from New School University, and a phenomenally talented painter.

Franz raised his arm. ‘Up there! Look!’
On the fourth floor a man and woman had come to the window and were looking down helplessly. The man lifted the woman on to the ledge and she crawled out and clung to one of the waste pipes. Bottles were lobbed up at them and bounced down among the police. A wide crack split the house from top to bottom and the floor on which the man was standing dropped and catapulted him backwards out of sight. Then one of the lintels in the first floor snapped and the entire house tipped over and collapsed. Franz and Gregson stood up, almost knocking over the table. The crowd surged forward through the cordon. When the dust had settled there was nothing left but a heap of masonry and twisted beams. Embedded in this was the battered figure of the man. Almost smothered by the dust he moved slowly, trying to free himself with one hand, and the crowd started roaring again as one of the grabs wound in and dragged him down under the rubble.

store and a new supermarket. An old sign running across the front had been painted over and evidently the ownership had recently changed. The present tenants had made a half-hearted attempt to convert the ground floor room into a cheap stand-up diner. The Fire Police appeared to be doing their best to wreck everything, and pies and smashed crockery were strewn all over the pavement. The noise died away and everyone waited as the winch began to revolve. The hawsers wound in and tautened, and the front wall of the house staggered outwards in rigid jerky movements. Suddenly there was a yell from the crowd.

HELLO_

Anybody who teaches can tell you how much they learn, standing in front of a classroom of watchful students. And it’s true. As your thoughts crystallize and align, something happens: piggy-backed ideas become a philosophy, organizing principles become a process. It’s heady, aspirational stuff. But that’s the hope, really.
Because when it functions, to teach can provide a future template for students to arrive at their strongest ideas and to execute them seamlessly. ’Course, there’s A LOT of work involved. But that’s also the hope. Truth told, when the process is strong, it shows in the product. The thing is, no matter how diverse the group of students, every one of them is in the room because when they were young, someone (a parent, teacher, friends... somebody ) told them what they were doing was great. What excitement, to imagine something and put it out in the world, make it real. Now, all these years later and in school -- headed fast into the real world -- the focus is still to get what’s inside one’s head, out. To crystallize ideas, to story-tell visually. This objective, triangulated with things such as the formal design challenge, client objectives, specific audience, and maybe most important, how to make an emotional connection through the work, forms the basis of design process. What excitement, to see it all come together in the form of a smart design solution, out in the world, made real. - William Morrisey
