Note From The Dean SVEN TRAVIS School of Art, Media, and Technology
The Parsons School of Art Media, and Technology is a community of widely varying disciplines ranging from experimental fine arts to hardcore commercial practice. Knitting them all together is a shared belief in making things that positively affect the world around us. The AAS Graphic Design program is a central constituent in this community, and as such, vital to the process of defining Parsons foci. The AAS Graphic Design student is a concerned, dedicated citizen who has made the decision to work for change— in his or her own professional practice and in the broader world. Whether
their interests lie in design specific domains such as typography, print, or digital, or they have broader interests such as humanitarian design, social technologies, or global exchange, the AAS Graphic Designer is hell-bent on massive positive impact in the real world and we have come to expect no less from graduates of this intense and accomplished program. This impressive book is a perfect demonstration of this attitude. It is with great pride that Parsons School of Art, Media, and Technology calls the AAS Graphic Design program one of our own!

Note From The DIRECTOR Katarzyna Gruda School of Art, Media, and Technology
Each semester I meet with newly admitted students and tell them, “Now that you are an AAS graphic design student, forget your previous life. You will not have time for anything but your coursework.” This is always met with laughter. No one thinks I’m serious. But this is the point exactly: because we accept (already) accomplished people with degrees ranging from business to liberal arts to fine arts they are here to work. And to turn them into bona fide designers in the short span of three semesters, we push them beyond capacity. This, of course, does not happen by itself. It requires determination of the
8
students (hence, the lack of life) and the dedication of the faculty. Our alumni prove the point year after year, and the workbooks we publish document the journey. They are a happy reminder of what is possible. I sign this new book with both pride of what we accomplished and a little sadness at saying “goodbye” to a group of talented, terrific people who often become friends for life. To get a glimpse of it all in progress, I invite you all to follow our blog at graphicdesign.parsons.edu.

I’ve always had a strong interest in design but it took me a while to fully embrace it and turn it into my career. Growing up in Sweden, I completed my undergraduate studies in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, and then received a Masters in Human Computer Interaction. It was during my Masters studies that I realized I wanted to make a career change towards design, and after researching the best schools around the world, Parsons’ AAS degree program stood out as the perfect fit for me. Parsons’ AAS program was an intense and inspiring year and a half of living and breathing design; it was an experience that gave me the foundation from which to build and grow a successful career in design.
great teachers, but its conceptual focus. I truly believe this is the combination that sets the best schools apart from the rest. I always knew I would one day have my own design studio, and after working as an art director in both London and New York, I founded Windup Design in New York City in 2002. Today, I am the co-founder and Creative Director of Cloudberry Creative, a 10-person strategic creative agency that helps primarily Fortune 500 companies with branding, design and user experience. People often ask me if I would recommend Parsons’ AAS program—I believe the fact that I’ve been a part-time faculty member for six years and have hired many of the program’s graduates speaks for itself.
Looking back, what I appreciate the most about the program is not only its
