Zen Meditation 101

Meditation is now mainstream and is being practiced in many places in many different ways. The meditation that will be taught in this course has its roots in Zen practice. In our everyday lives, we can see how complex life can be and how, sometimes, we need to have a place to relax and catch our breath. Participants will learn that this place of rest already exists in our own bodies. The most important point in this class is to learn how to just sit, and be very comfortable and restful – a practice and tool that can be applied to any life endeavor. Introduction to Topical Herbal Medicine Making

Salves and herbal oils are delightful balms for soothing skin irritation, dryness and inflammation. Botanical infused oils act to extract and preserve the medicinal qualities of herbs, providing a convenient and pleasurable form of topical application. In this class students will learn how to craft two herbal preparations. This is a hands on educational experience. A discussion on which plants to utilize and their medicinal properties will be included. We will begin by making an herbal infused medicinal oil with local wild plants. This resulting medicinal oil can be used as a topical massage oil or

crafted into salve. The class will transform our herbal oil into a healing salve and everyone will go home with a tin of our co-created medicine. Introduction to Food as Medicine

Many medicinal herbs are tasty and can be prepared as food, rather than what we typically picture as medicine (teas, capsules or tinctures). The herbs used are generally safe to consume in larger doses, and have been traditionally used as food plants or culinary herbs. In this class students will learn how to craft three herbal medicinal foods. This is a hands on educational experience. A discussion on plants to utilize and their medicinal properties will be included. We will begin by making an herbal infused vinegar with wild + organically grown herbs, then move on to crafting Herbal Honey’s and Herbal Elixirs. Everyone will go home with a sample of one of the herbal medicines. Japanese Food and Culture

This interdisciplinary class will be led by Sachiko Otsuki (Ph.D equivalent of Japanese art history and the owner/chef of Yaquinadon). This cutting edge approach to Japanese art history is different than a conventional or chronological method, and is designed to get sense of Japanese art in a broader context. Examples are shown by slides and through actual cooking. She will talk about art elements in Japanese culture (art history), and then cooks a dish that links to the theme (cooking class) each session. After cooking, the whole class can enjoy the foods for lunch. The tentative topics are following as: Japanese tea – Introduction, a concept of art.

Rice balls – Art of wrapping.

Udon with egg – Mitate (sense of parody or copy,) implication, codes, multiple meanings behind. Cooked veggies – Good luck symbols and their meanings.

Chirashizuzhi – Sense of colors, art of sushi.

Curry rice – Adoption and mingling cultures, creating new cultures. Nature Printed Note Cards

Learn the technique of nature printing while creating as series of beautiful original note-cards. With screen printing inks, students will learn the basic process of inking and pressing to transfer leaf images to paper. The ink will be applied in layers, then blended resulting in harmonious color combinations. Each student receives 12 blank cards and envelopes, as well as a variety of rice papers for additional images. Kelp, Rattle and Roll

The bull kelp that abounds in our local waters is an extraordinary material - at various times it has the quality of fabric, leather, or wood. In this class, you will have the opportunity to work with the various sections of kelp, making a variety of kelp beads, a kelp rattle, and then twisting and rolling it around a tube to dry in different configurations. The beads and rattle will dry in a dehydrator in the classroom, and you will be able to decorate both the rattle and beads. The remaining rolled kelp pieces will be taken home for drying. Gyotaku: Fish Printing with Fish Replicas

Gyotaku, or fish rubbing, is a Japanese art form in which ink is applied to the body of a fish, and paper pressed onto the fish to receive the ink. The resulting images show the features and shape of a fish with remarkable detail. In this 3-hour workshop students will learn how to print a fish with the use of rubber fish replicas, plastic and plaster casts of fish, and even fish toys. Students are asked to bring: 1 box baby wipes, optional -selection of brushes for acrylic paints and optional acrylic colors. Oil Painting Using the Wet on Wet Method

Learn how to paint an oil painting using the wet on wet method. This method begins with painting the entire canvas with a light coat of oil paint for an easy blending technique. Learn how easy it is to blend and detail as you go, even if you currently don’t have any drawing capabilities. This class has been extended to 8 sessions this term. Instructor Georgina Nielsen. Seatauqua The Seatauqua (see-TOK-wa) was a series of workshops, lectures and excursions that ran for decades in Newport. Coordinated by Oregon Sea Grant, the programs encouraged chautauqua-style discussions by all participants about arts, sciences, coastal ecology and more. In 2014, with the help of Heather Fortner, Maryann Bozza and others, Oregon Coast Community College and the Hatfield Marine Science Center began the process of reviving Seatauqua, with special classes and workshops. Drawing into Watercolor

Intermediate Drawing Designed for students who already have a grasp of basic drawing techniques, this class takes you deeper into form, structure, and expression. Beginning Landscape – Seascape Oil Painting

In this course, Lincoln City artist Katia Kyte (pictured at left) will share her knowledge and experience with students and help them develop a foundation in the fundamentals of painting landscapes and seascapes. If you are new to painting in oil, or just want to brush up on your skills, this is an excellent class to take. You will learn about value, color, and techniques, how to capture light effects and simplify objects. Types of canvas, oil mediums, and how to paint with a palette knife will all be discussed. Students will learn the essentials of oil painting and become comfortable with solvents, oil mediums, brushes, and oil paints. Students will learn basic elements of painting such as values, composition, color, edges. If the weather permits, we paint outdoors. Love Lives Forever

Join this series of five classes designed to assist people who are dealing with anxiety, depression and other effects of grief and loss. “My classes would also be appropriate for anyone who is interested in making connections beyond the veil,” says instructor Violet Young. “My classes discuss the concept that Love Never Dies and that connecting with deceased loved ones is possible. I present my own experiences since my husband crossed over on April 6, 2015, as well as my experiences with other family members prior to this loss. I also share experiences that I had with my mother when she was in hospice. This will be a forum for people to share their own experiences and thoughts about the possibility that they have received messages from their loved ones. This class is spiritually based, however not religious. I will be assisting people in becoming more open and aware, discerning and receptive of possible messages from loved ones. In my experience, many people have experienced messages and visitations but are often self-conscious or afraid to actually believe it. My classes help people feel less isolated and confused, leading to more self-acceptance and self-love to assist with the grieving/healing journey.”

This class is designed for people with no, or very little, Spanish skills. Students will learn the basic vocabulary needed for essential communication such as alphabet, personal information, greetings, usual questions (Where is the bathroom? How much does this cost?), plus numbers, games, food, fun facts, music and dances from different Latin countries. The class will be tailored to the students’ interests and needs, whether that be travel, shopping, health, or other goals. Estate Planning: Wills and Trusts

Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissent in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches you the strategies needed for effective management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. We will also consider questions of planning that include IRA’s and other retirement assets.

Home Brewing

This class for the first-time brewer explains the basic equipment needed to home-brew, and how it works. Participants observe firsthand the brewing, bottling, and tasting process. The class will teach participants to brew an extract batch of beer from start to finish in three, two hour sessions. The group will brew a batch the first day. The second session will feature bottling the batch. The final day will be a summary with Q&A. The best part? The class will get to open some bottles. Everyone will get a six-pack to take home to share with friends and family. Break through the barriers of fear and myth with this handson, basic approach to a pastime both rewarding and addictive. Learn how to assemble feathers and furs on hooks to fool and catch fish. Solve the riddle of when, where, and how to use which fly patterns. (Starter tools and materials on loan from Central Coast Fly Fishers.) Get expert help choosing your own gear. From global warming to the local battle about aerial spraying, environmental issues more often divide than unite us. This class uses six hot issues to explore how science and conflict resolution practices can help create mutual understanding and the discovery of common ground. Each class discuss one issue. In the 2nd and following classes each session begins with a short follow up on the previous class. The goal is not to solve these big problems, but to find constructive ways to talk about them and to use the relevant science, economics, and ethics. Birding Basics

Do you find yourself listening to an odd chirp while walking or gardening? Are you fascinated by the random rustlings in the bushes? Do you notice and enjoy the birds in your world, but wish you knew more about these clever and busy neighbors? This is just the class for you! Participants will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing. Bird identification, adaptations, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this 2-week class. Participants will have access to bird guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. The final trip of the class will be a field trip to identify birds in the area. (Field trip dependent on weather conditions.) Drivers Education

ODOT-approved Driver’s Education course at OCCC Central County Campus in Newport. Students must have a valid driving permit and be 15, 16 or 17 years of age. Students who turn 18 before the end of the course do not qualify for the DMV drive test exemption. The course is composed of 34 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of observation. The behind-the-wheel and observation will take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, depending on student schedules. D2L Darkness to Light

The Stewards of Children / Darkness to Light training lasts 2.5 hours; the program is an evidence-informed prevention solution that shows community organizations, administrators, staff, parents, educators, and volunteers how to implement effective prevention policies, recognize the signs of sexual abuse in children, and react responsibly if abuse occurs. The training is provided by Certified D2L Facilitators through the Children’s Advocacy Center of Lincoln County. The training qualifies for two units of CEU’s. An Introduction to 3-D Printing

This class will teach the fundamentals of guitar playing. Offering group instruction as well as one on one instruction at times according to the musical interests and the level of ability.

Understand the principles behind additive 3-D printing. Learn the basics of this emerging technology and discuss its many applications, both present and future. 3D Printing: In this class, designed for those with some familiarity with 3D printing, participants will be introduced to more advanced principles of digital design and fabrication. Understanding these processes will enable you to envision and create your own unique designs. I’m from Tucson, Ariz., where I taught elementary school for 27 years. I was the technology person in my building, and instructed the faculty in computer skills and helped with tech equipment and maintenance. After retiring, I worked for the district’s Informational Technology department, repairing computer equipment and managing accounts for teachers and staff. In 2007 I Joined the Arizona Highways Photo Workshops. As a volunteer trip leader, I helped participants with photographic skills as directed by the professional photographer. These workshops ranged from one-day sessions up to week-long workshops.

Techniques for Creating Inner Peace in Stressful Times This class is about assisting people in understanding that our own personal belief system and selftalk set us up to perceive the world either negatively or positively. We are influenced and become preconditioned by and through our upbringing and life experiences. As this happens so slowly during our lives, and we become resigned to the “usual outcome”, we are not conscious of the patterns being formed. After resigning ourselves to the “it’s just the way it is” way of life, there is often the onset of depression and anxiety. By exploring and learning to recognize our own patterns and triggers as well as recognizing that we can give ourselves options to view situations from different perspectives, we can then be open to make choices that painlessly create new growth and joy. During the class, there will be time for personal exploration and sharing of personal experiences by class members. One way OCCC demonstrates this commitment is by offering GED classes to prepare individuals to pass the GED State Exam. GED classes are offered both days and evenings at OCCC’s Newport and Lincoln City locations. These classes are open to anyone 16 or older (students who are 16 or 17 must obtain an official release from high school and submit it to their instructor prior to registering for classes). Real Estate Broker’s License Pre-Exam Class Just one look at the scenery around us, and it’s no wonder that Lincoln County is such a promising place to work as a Real Estate Broker. And, this Fall, Oregon Coast Community College will present a 10-week Real Estate Pre-License course, a course designed to help aspiring Real Estate brokers launch their careers here on the Central Coast. This Fall, the course will be presented at OCCC’s North County Center in Lincoln City. The class revolves around online coursework completed independently between weekly classroom sessions, and it meets the 150-hour Oregon Real Estate Agency requirement to qualify to take the Oregon

State Real Estate Broker License exam. Once a student completes this course, they will be able to submit their broker application to the Oregon Real Estate Agency and they’ll be able to take the Oregon State/PSI Real Estate Broker exam. This four-week course features 12 hours of instruction time, in four three-hour sessions and lab time of four three-hour sessions, to build a website with hands-on help from the instructor. Session One: Hosting, domain name, website layout, plan and strategy. Session Two: Picking your template and adding the pages for content and images. Session Three: Picking the right plug-ins for advanced functions and customer use. Session Four: Launching your site, tracking success. What search words do people use to find your services? Google Analytics is a free, powerful, independent tool that can provide you with real answers to how and when visitors are finding your website, and what type of users visit the site, and your social media platforms. Businesses in Lincoln County are invited to schedule a oneor two-hour appointment in the Digital Media & Marketing Studio at OCCC’s Small Business Development Center in Lincoln City. Studio host Gretchen Ammerman will work with business owners and representatives to help them learn how to shoot their own photographs, videos and audio recordings to help better promote and sell Lincoln County products online across many channels. It’s never too late for college! Residents 65 or better receive FREE tuition for credit classes

Senior citizens age 65 and above get free tuition for credit classes on a space-available basis and taken for an audit. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed. To use the waiver, find the class you’d like to take in the class schedule, but don’t register yet. Print out the senior waiver form and contact the instructor on the first day of class. Get the instructor’s permission to take the class and have them sign the form, then return to Student Services in Newport or Lincoln City. After the waiver has been applied to your account, log into myOCCC and pay any fees not covered by the waiver. Registration prior to the first day of class will void the waiver and charges for the full tuition and fees will apply. Note: you must be an OCCC student to use this waiver. Newport natives find their MBA foundation at OCCC Every one of the OCCC sharks is on a journey. The story of Newport native Dylann Deeds proves that a career path is rarely straight and narrow. In her case it began at Newport High School, then led to Sweden, and then to Portland, before landing her back on the Oregon Coast where she and her husband, Nick, are taking foundation classes for their MBAs. Dylann first connected with OCCC in high school, when she took a few college courses to augment her NHS studies. Back then, the courses were held in a rambling, rented office space on Hwy. 101 in central Newport. As a local girl with big dreams, she was less than inspired. “The classes were in a tiny little facility that was literally falling down around them. This new facility is awesome,” she said, looking around the vaulted ceilings in the cavernous Student Commons at the Newport campus, which was opened in 2009. After graduating high school, Dylann (Crichton) Deeds studied music in Sweden, then returned to the Northwest. It was back home in Newport that she met Nick, who was serving in the Navy. The couple were wed in February 2009. When his service was complete, Nick and Dylann made their home in Portland. But they grew tired of the urban pace and the constant traffic, and eventually moved back to the coast, where Dylann could be close to her newborn nephew and the rest of her family. Despite finding some personal happiness, both realized they had unfulfilled academic goals. They decided that their marriage could use two MBAs, which would give them more earning power and professional freedom for the rest of their lives. But how? Enter the ASOT-B, or the Associate of Science Oregon Transfer in Business. Thanks to a close working relationship between OCCC and Oregon State University, this program allows students to take foundational degree courses that are automatically transferred toward the business programs at OSU. The Deedses enrolled in our ASOT last summer, and are scheduled to complete its requirements next June. The next stop in the journey will be a move to Corvallis, where they will continue their coursework. As OCCC tuition and fees are lower than those at OSU, Dylann and Nick are saving money. That’s just part of the reason, however, that they chose OCCC. “The fact that we get to see my family every day means a lot,” she said. “And, Portland was great, but I’ve lived on the beach my entire life, and I had a hard time with no ocean.” She’s also been happily challenged by OCCC’s robust offerings and

Dylann Deeds talented faculty, which she believes are preparing her for the rigors of the master’s degree that lies ahead. “Both Marge (Burak) and Amanda (Zerr) love math, and that comes across. I really enjoyed their passion for it. I also got to take Writing 122 with Robert Roger. He’s really cool – he dropped out of high school, went to community college and eventually became a district attorney. An amazing story!” “I feel like this college is going up and up, and getting better and better,” Dylann continued. “The classes are small, and people really care. You know everybody – and you recognize everybody. You’re not just a student number – they know your name. And that’s something you’re not going to get anywhere else. And I greatly appreciate that.”
