Basic Japanese for Travelers 2

This class is designed for beginner students to learn commonly used vocabulary and phrases through conversational practices. The topics include asking how to get to your destination, public transit by using simple verb sentences. Besides language practice, cultural understanding will also be emphasized. Love Lives Forever

This series of three classes is designed to assist people who are dealing with the effects of grief and loss which include anxiety and depression. “My classes would also be appropriate for anyone who is interested in making connections beyond the veil,” wrote instructor Violet Young. “My classes will be discussing the concept that Love Never Dies, and that connecting with deceased loved ones is possible. I will be presenting my own experiences since my husband crossed over on April 6, 2015, as well as my experiences with other family members prior to this loss. I will also share experiences that I had with my mother when she was in hospice. This will be a forum for people to share their own experiences and thoughts about the possibility that they have received messages from their loved ones. This class is spiritually based however not religious. I would be assisting people in becoming more open and aware, discerning and receptive of possible messages from loved ones. In my experience, many people have experienced messages and visitations but are often self-conscious or afraid to actually believe it. 3D2: Beyond the Basics

3D Printing: In this class, designed for those with some familiarity with 3D printing, participants will be introduced to more advanced principles of digital design and fabrication. Understanding these processes will enable you to envision and create your own unique designs. The class will cover: • 3D design software including Autodesk’s 123d Design and the more powerful Fusion 360, both of which are free applications. • The different types of printers, their strengths and limitations, the different types of plastics available and how to choose which one to use. • Slicing software, including Cura and Simplified 3d, which are used to process your digital design and prepare it for 3D printing. By the end of the class, the group will have conceptualized, designed and digitally fabricated our collaborative creation. Spanish for Beginners

Students with little or no experience in Spanish will learn the basic vocabulary needed for essential communication such as personal information, everyday questions (how much? where is the restroom? etc.) basic grammar and the conjugation of the verb to be. Creative Writing Workshop

Workshop is vital for writers who want to improve upon a specific piece of writing or their writing style in general. The workshop experience and constructive criticism is meant to help writers better understand the complex relationship between a piece of literature and its audience. Though it can feel uncomfortable, it is meant to produce respectful suggestions for improvement and to give an opportunity to express appreciation for what needs no improvement. Both novice and professional writers are welcome but this is not an introductory or instructive writing course. It is designed for the writer who has a piece (or pieces) that they are wanting constructive criticism for. Each writer will have two, thirty minute maximum length opportunities to read their work to the group and receive feedback. Copies of the writing sample need to be provided for the group when you are slotted for your reading. First class meeting will be orientation. We will discuss the course details at that time as well as guidelines for the constructive criticism. The remaining four classes will be practical application of feedback.

AHA Basic Life Support This course is designed for healthcare professionals. Provides education and training in infant, child and adult CPR, AED and bag valve masks for people who are responsible for delivering emergency care and for ensuring the public safety. Everything is a Story

Break through the barriers of fear and myth with this hands-on, basic approach to a pastime both rewarding and addictive. Learn how to assemble feathers and furs on hooks to fool and catch fish. Solve the riddle of when, where, and how to use which fly patterns. (Starter tools and materials graciously provided by the Central Coast Fly Fishers.) Get expert help choosing your own gear. Practice casting and presenting wet and dry flies.

The basics of narrative writing whether fiction or nonfiction. By workshop and analyses, this course introduces participants to the role of story in science, journalism, history, and fiction. Whether we are dreaming, daydreaming, planning the future of a city, or describing the results of a scientific research, we usually express ourselves in story form. It’s a universal human practice. Birding Basics

Do you find yourself listening to an odd chirp while walking or gardening? Are you fascinated by the random rustlings in the bushes? Do you notice and enjoy the birds in your world, but wish you knew more about these clever and busy neighbors? This is just the class for you! Participants will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing. Bird identification, adaptions, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this 2 week class. Participants will have access to bird guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. The final day of class will be a field trip to identify birds in the area.

Zen Meditation

Meditation is now mainstream and is being practiced in many different places in many different ways. The meditation that will be taught has its roots in Zen practice. In our everyday lives we can see how complex life can be and how we need to have a place to relax and catch our breath sometimes. In this class students will learn that this place of rest already exists in our own bodies. The most important point in this class is to learn how to, Just SIT, and be very comfortable and restful, a practice and tool that can be applied to any life endeavor. Intoxicated on Life: Uses of Essential Oils

Explore the world of aromatherapy. In this course, students will be introduced to the properties and qualities of essential oils. What is Your Home or Real Estate Worth?

An introduction to the basic math, vocabulary, and methods of property valuation. (Much of this also applicable to business valuation.) The course would include, if possible, a visit to the assessor’s office, a session with a professional appraiser and/ or mortgage lender. Wealth, Poverty & Economics

The course will consist of an in-depth study of wealth, poverty, and the economic system in which they are grounded in the United States, building on related introductory theories and concepts across disciplines (Sociology, Economics, Political Science and Psychology). “While I do see this as an advanced class requiring student maturity,” the instructor said, “I intend to make it very accessible to all.” The course is proposed as an innovative course bridging disciplines to develop systems understanding in the growing economic inequalities of American society. Estate Plans Wills & Trust

Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissension in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches you the strategies needed for effective management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. Introduction to Home Brewing This class for the first-time brewer explains the basic equipment needed to home-brew and how it works. Participants see first-hand the process of brewing, bottling, and tasting home-brew. The class will teach you to brew an extract batch of beer from start to finish in three, two-hour sessions. Students will see the instructor brew a batch the first day. The second session, two weeks later, the group will occc photo bottle up the batch. The final day, two weeks after bottling, will be a summary with Q&A. The best part? The class will get to open some bottles. Everyone will get a six pack to take home to share with friends and family. Participants must be over the age of 21. Nature Printed Journal

This class teaches the use of items from nature such as leaves, flowers, shells, seaweed and bark to create pieces of art on heavy rag paper, then turn it all into a handmade journal. This 5-hour class introduces the art of nature printing using a range of media, including acrylics, paper dyes, block printing ink, embossing powers and matte medium. Students will create an assortment of prints on sheets of paper and then do a simple binding with a cover to create a journal, suitable for writing or additional artwork. Introductory Drawing

This is a class to introduce the student to the basics of drawing. Students need no prior art or drawing experience. Drawing tools introduced in the class are vine and compressed charcoal, conte crayon, graphite sticks, brush and ink. In addition, different drawing papers will be used, ex. BFK Reves. The student will practice, with assigned drawing problems, the rules of perspective, gestural line drawing, blind contour drawing, brush and ink. At the end of the class, the student will have improved hand/eye coordination and a drawing vocabulary to work independently. Beachcombers’ Nature Printing

Learn about the treasures that you might find in a beachcombing trip on the Oregon Coast, and then learn the basics of nature printing to make small images or cards with these items. You will be able to choose from a selection of crustaceans, seaweeds, corals, driftwood, stones, invertebrates, and shoreline plants found on our local beaches. You will print with water soluble inks onto thin rice paper, and can expect to leave with 6-10 finished images. Oil Painting

Octopus Gyotaku

Learn how to create an oil painting using the wet on wet method. This method begins with painting the entire canvas with a light coat of oil paint for an easy blending technique. Learn how easy it is to blend and detail as you go, even if you currently don’t have any drawing capabilities.

The eight-legged marine octopus fascinates everyone, and also make for spectacular gyotaku, or fish prints. In this class you will be working with small market size octopus, and learning the steps of traditional gyotaku of applying ink to the body of an octopus and pressing rice paper to receive the image. You have the opportunity to create at least 10-12 gyotaku on rice paper with one specimen, or create an entire “school” of octopus. An additional $15 materials fee is required for this class

Mosaic Tiles

Pieces of the Past is an introductory course in the centuries-old art of mosaics. Traces of ancient mosaics extend as far back as the earliest document writing methods, around 3100 BC. Over time, the methods of making mosaics, their uses, and the materials used, have all changed. The initial class will be devoted to producing a mirror, using the “direct method,” which will be completed by the end of class the first day. The second session will be devoted to the various mosaic styles, a review of suitable tools, adhesives, grouting, and frames. At that class, students will be asked to select a mosaic work which will be their major task for the term. The method to be used will depend upon that previously utilized. At the third class, they will mount this piece on a board and begin the mosaic process. The appropriate tools for each project will be provided by the instructor. Throughout the term, students will be introduced to techniques including mounting, framing and gluing. This class is about assisting people in understanding that our own personal belief system and self-talk set us up to perceive the world either negatively or positively. We are influenced and become preconditioned by and through our upbringing and life experiences. As this happens so slowly during our lives, and we become resigned to the “usual outcome”, we are not conscious of the patterns being formed. After resigning ourselves to the “it’s just the way it is” way of life, there is often the onset of depression and anxiety. By exploring and learning to recognize our own patterns and triggers as well as recognizing that we can give ourselves options to view situations from different perspectives, we can then be open to make choices that painlessly create new growth and joy. During the class, there will be time for personal exploration and sharing of personal experiences by class members. Digital Camera Basics

Drawing for Beginners

Students will bring their camera and camera manuals. They will have hands on practice in the following areas: Camera modes, image quality settings, shutter release, focusing modes, area of the frame, flash modes, white balance, metering modes, the exposure triangle and histograms. From properly sharpening a pencil to basic perspectives, this class will help sharpen skills and prompt personal projects. Students will be able to use skills learned in this class to enhance observational skills as well as the ability to render form, volume, and perspective in drawings. The wheel world: OCCC hosts drivers education This Winter, you can find Jerry Conrady’s ODOT-approved Driver’s Education course at Oregon Coast Community College’s Central County Campus in Newport. Students must have a valid driving permit and be 15, 16 or 17 years of age. Students who turn 18 before the end of the course do not qualify for DMV drive test exemption. This course is composed of 34 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and 6 hours of observation. The behind-the-wheel and observation will take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, depending on student schedules.

Almost a year ago, Oregon Coast Community College’s Small Business Development Center secured a generous economic development grant from Lincoln County. With it, the SBDC built the Oregon Coast Digital Media & Marketing Studio (DMMS). Assembled throughout the summer, the studio is now open for business. Any small business in Lincoln County can use the studio to photograph their products (food, crafts, artwork and more), or record video or audio marketing materials. The DMMS has already been used to photograph sculptures, paintings, sketches, glass art and more. Its large green screen has been used for video recordings and two businesses have recorded radio advertisements. The acoustically-paneled DMMS features a still- and video DSLR camera (Canon 5D MkIII), a Kaiser copy stand (for highquality photography of paintings and other two-dimensional pieces), a chromatic green screen, and an Apple iMac with Camtasia, Final Cut Pro and other software. The SBDC is recruiting for a part-time studio host with applicable photography, software and editing skills to assist businesses using the studio. In the interim, SBDC staff are available to schedule 1- or 2-hour appointments in the studio. OCCC students may also reserve the studio for class projects. This Winter, the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center is pleased to continue “Doing Business in Lincoln County,” a jumping-off point for would-be entrepreneurs and business owners. One of the core services offered by the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center for nearly 30 years is free, confidential, one-on-one business advising. “Any business owner, or anyone even considering starting a business at some point in the future, is welcome to come in and discuss whatever is on their mind,” said Dave Price, Director of the SBDC. Many think the SBDC serves mainly start-up enterprises, when in fact only 30% of SBDC counseling clients are start-ups. Real Estate Broker’s License Pre-Exam Class Just one look at the scenery around us, and it’s no wonder that Lincoln County is such a promising place to work as a Real Estate Broker. Did you pay a lot for a website and still can’t be found on a Google search? Do you know how much traffic your website is getting? Where is that traffic coming from? What search words do people use to find your services? Google Analytics is a free, powerful, independent tool that can provide you with real answers to how and when visitors are finding your website, and what type of users visit the site, and your social media platforms. WordPress is a powerful and versatile platform for blogs and websites used by countless small businesses and non-profits. One of its advantages is the ability to maintain and update the site yourself without special software or any knowledge of HTML coding. Even if an outside vendor built your website, this class is designed to help office staff, volunteers or business owners make updates and improvements to their website themselves when necessary. Build Your Own Website

This four-week course features 12 hours of instruction time, in four three-hour sessions and lab time of four three-hour sessions, to build a website with hands-on help from the instructor. Session One: Hosting, domain name, website layout, plan and strategy. Session Two: Picking your template and adding the pages for content and images. Session Three: Picking the right plug-ins for advanced functions and customer use. Session Four: Launching your site, tracking success. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to create a site using a template and modify its content, add special features to the website with plug-in modules and choose where to host the website. It’s never too late for college! Residents 65 or better receive FREE tuition for OCCC credit classes The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong process, and OCCC is pleased to offer senior learners the opportunity to enhance new and existing skills through challenging and intellectually stimulating programs. If you are an Oregon resident who is 65 or older, you may be eligible for free or discounted tuition rates. Seniors get free tuition for credit classes when taken for an audit grading option. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed. The only way to secure a spot in a class is to register early and pay full tuition. Auditing students must be registered for eight credits or less per term. Simply find the credit class you want to audit on pages 12-14, then complete the waiver form found at oregoncoastcc.org (or call 541-867-8501 and request one), and bring it to the first day of class. Your instructor will need to approve the audit. After that, you’ll give the signed form to Enrollment Services Coordinator to verify enrollment and waitlist status. Finally, pay course fees and purchase textbooks and/or other materials not covered by the tuition waiver, and you’re ready! Meet Daniel Edwards, a recipient of OCCC Foundation Scholarship support, thanks to donors like you. I am 25 years old and am currently on track to earn my Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree (AAOT). Fourteen months ago I was struck by a car while on a motorcycle. Thankfully, the paramedics were there within minutes after I was hit and immediately did their job with efficiency and empathy. Though my injuries were not life-threatening, they were devastating enough to be life-altering. This painful experience, combined with my desire to help people and a craving for education and knowledge, helped me find my purpose â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to become a paramedic here in my beautiful home state. The pain we endure in life is what defines us. Not what the pain is, but how we respond to it. My accident could have broken me in more ways than physically, and it almost did. The financial set-back is something I am still recovering from. But I rose up from this pain and made it into a lesson rather than a punishment. I was given the courage to take the plunge into higher education. At some point in our lives we will all need a helping hand. Whether weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re being hoisted into an ambulance, are having financial woes, or just simply need a shoulder on which to lean. When I look around OCCC, I see people of all ages working hard to make their dreams and goals a reality. Some of us struggle

more than others, and with opportunities like the Oregon Coast Community College scholarship, those goals are made that much more achievable.
