OCCC30
Oregon Coast Community College: established by Lincoln County voters on May 19, 1987
Since 1987, Oregon Coast Community College has served the communities of Lincoln County. From humble beginnings marked by rented classrooms in a former tavern, OCCC – which the Oregonian once dubbed “The Little College that Could” – has grown steadily. Last year, OCCC served more than 2,000 students – more than in any past year. Thanks to OCCC, thousands of local students have saved millions in tuition they might have paid four-year institutions, as they’ve earned Associate and Transfer degrees at OCCC and furthered their careers and livelihoods, right here at home. Through last June, OCCC has graduated more than 150 nurses, many of whom are caring for patients right here in Lincoln County today. More than 100 aquarists have graduated from OCCC’s innovative Aquarium Science Program, with either a one-year certificate or two-year degree. Aquarium Science grads can be found across the United States, at many major aquariums, zoos and other wildlife facilities. The College has become a key gathering place in Lincoln County, for social events as well as thoughtful, even highly charged, debate and discourse. For example, when Newport’s fishing community rallied to fight to save the Coast Guard helicopter station located here, they met face to face with Coast Guard officials here at their College – along with hundreds of other community members. Senators, members of congress, and countless other elected and appointed officials reach out to the coast through Oregon Coast Community College. Dr. Birgitte Ryslinge The school is also home to one of the state’s most active Small Business Development Centers, runPresident, Oregon Coast Community ning one of Oregon’s largest Small Business Management programs and offering free business advising to any entrepreneur in the county. And, through its busy calendar of non-credit community education courses, featured in the pages of this very publication, the College provides free and low-cost access to courses covering a vast array of topics, such as emergency preparedness, music, dance, history, religion, fishing and home brewing, among many others. In all these ways and more, we equip students for their own success, today and in their futures, and we enrich the economic and civic vitality of Lincoln County and beyond. Thank you for your support of OCCC in its first 30 years. As we begin our next 30, I hope you’ll join us as a student, a participant, or even as a supporter of the OCCC Foundation, whose generous donors help make dreams come true for some of Lincoln County’s best and brightest.
our mission At Oregon Coast Community College we equip students for success by providing educational pathways and supports in response to the diverse needs of our community. Through accessible and engaging programs, we enrich the economic and civic vitality of Lincoln County and beyond.
Congratulations to Oregon Coast Community College on its 30th anniversary! The College has been a catalyst for positive change in the community for three decades, empowering individuals to achieve their dreams and helping local businesses to thrive in the growing Lincoln County community. Thank you, Lincoln County, for supporting higher education, local businesses and workforce training on Oregon’s central coast. The future is bright! Pat O’Connor Former president

Creative Writing Workshop
Workshop is vital for writers who want to improve upon a specific piece of writing or their writing style in general. The workshop experience and constructive criticism is meant to help writers better understand the complex relationship between a piece of literature and its audience. Though it can feel uncomfortable, it is meant to produce respectful suggestions for improvement and to give an opportunity to express appreciation for what needs no improvement. Both novice and professional writers are welcome but this is not an introductory or instructive writing course. It is designed for the writer who has a piece or pieces) that they are wanting constructive criticism for. Each writer will have two, thirty minute maximum length opportunities to read their work to the group and receive feedback. Copies of the writing sample need to be provided for the group when you are slotted for your reading. The first class meeting will be an orientation, and slightly shorter than the rest of the sessions. We will discuss the course details at that time as well as guidelines for the constructive criticism. The remaining four classes will be practical application of thoughtful feedback. Lincoln City Tues & Thurs • 5:30-8:30pm April 20-May 4 • $50 Instructor: Kimberly Shott To register, call 541-996-6222 or visit oregoncoastcc.org/ communityed

Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. We will also consider questions of planning that include IRA’s and other retirement assets. Real Poetry in Real Life
Starting with neuroscience and best loved poems, this course will give participants the confidence to read poetry aloud in a way that makes it intelligible and powerful. Reciting and reading poetry was a normal part of civic life around the world until recently. The instructor, a widely published writer of non-fiction, fiction, and poetry, will explore poetry from Homer to Heany, from Papua, New Guinea to presidential inaugurations. Participants may work on and present their own poetry as illustrations, but writing poetry is not required or central to the course. Enjoying the reading of poetry and finding ways to regain a place for it in civic life (not just in poetry readings) is at the center of these presentations and discussions.
Dog Smarts

Mosaic Tiles
A basic introduction to the art of mosaics. Including a brief history of the art form, as well as the techniques applied over time. The opening project will be the production of a mosaic mirror, utilizing the so-called “direct method,” a task that will be completed by the end of the first session. The second session will involve a review of the many materials used in mosaics, and hands-on exercises using a range of tools and techniques that the students will then use during the remainder of the term. It will include illustrations of some of the basic techniques used by mosaicists. The second session will conclude with the students selecting from a large corpus of mosaic pieces a work that they will then proceed to build during the next classes. Whether
they complete this single work or proceed to another will depend upon the degree of complexity of their selected work as well as the abilities of the students to master the necessary techniques. The size of the individual projects will vary, and will generally be in the area of 12” x 12”. The remaining sessions will be devoted to the mosaic tasks, and, when needed, additional instructions, including gluing, grouting, mounting, and framing. Because each student will be selecting his/her unique object, the methods, materials, and processes will vary considerably. Small Business Classes Free Business Advising
Doing Business in Lincoln County
This Spring, the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center is pleased to continue “Doing Business in Lincoln County,” a jumping-off point for would-be entrepreneurs and business owners. If you’re considering starting a business on the Oregon Coast, are simply curious about how a typical business gets started, or if you’ve recently launched a business here, this is a class you shouldn’t miss. Start with a solid understanding of break-even analysis, learn how to register your business locally and with the state, and determine if you have “The Right Stuff ” for entrepreneurship in the first place. The class is taught by Craig Grant, who’s been advising Oregon Coast business owners for more than 13 years here in Lincoln County. Lincoln City Wednesday, May 17 • 10am-1pm Tuition: $25 • Instructor: Craig Grant Register at oregoncoastcc.org/sbdc, or call 541-994-4166.
craig grant
One of the core services offered by the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center for nearly 30 years is free, confidential, one-on-one business advising. “Any business owner, or anyone even considering starting a business at some point in the future, is welcome to come in and discuss whatever is on their mind,” said Dave Price, Director of the SBDC. Many think the SBDC serves mainly start-up enterprises, when in fact only 30% of SBDC counseling clients are start-ups. The majority of SBDC clients have been in business for years. “A number of our clients represent businesses that have served Lincoln County for decades, even generations,” Price said. Counseling clients often meet first with Craig Grant, OCCC’s lead business advisor. He has helped businesses value their firms prior to sale and address new competitive forces and changes in the marketplace, and he’s helped countless would-be entrepreneurs explore the potential of their new business ideas. Registering for counseling is simple. Click the link at www. oregoncoastcc.org/sbdc. Appointments are available at the Lincoln City or Newport OCCC locations.
Real Estate Broker’s License Pre-Exam Class Just one look at the scenery around us, and it’s no wonder that Lincoln County is such a promising place to work as a Real Estate Broker. And, this Spring, Oregon Coast Community College will present a 10-week Real Estate Pre-License course, a course designed to help aspiring Real Estate brokers launch their careers here on the Central Coast. This Spring, the course will be presented at OCCC’s North County Center in Lincoln City. The class revolves around online coursework completed independently between weekly classroom sessions, and it meets the 150-hour Oregon Real Estate Agency requirement to qualify to take the
Oregon State Real Estate Broker License exam. Once a student completes this course, they will be able to submit their broker application to the Oregon Real Estate Agency and they’ll be able to take the Oregon State/PSI Real Estate Broker exam. Lincoln City Tuesdays, April 4-June 6 • 5:30-8:30pm Saturday, June 10 • 9am-5pm Tuition: $600 • Instructor: Linda Laughlin Roy Register at oregoncoastcc.org/sbdc, or call 541-994-4166.

Small Business Classes Website Essentials 2-Part Class
Did you pay a lot for a website and still can’t be found on a Google search? Do you know how much traffic your website is getting? Where is that traffic coming from? What search words do people use to find your services? Google Analytics is a free, powerful, independent tool that can provide you with real answers to how and when visitors are finding your website, and what type of users visit the site, and your social media platforms. Prerequisite: A website with Google Analytics, and access to your report with at least 30 days of traffic – students unsure of how to load Google Analytics on their site should contact the instructor prior to class. To do so, simply call 541-994-4166. Session one of this class will cover: • How to read your Google Analytics report • How to evaluate what different reports mean • How to filter out spam traffic from the report • How this information can be used to improve your website • Learn which pages on your site generate the most visits • Understand bounce rate, and how it affects your ranking • What search terms are sending clients to your page • How to block foreign traffic from your site
Session two of this course will ask if it’s time to update your website or start your first website. Whether you’re going to hire someone to build a website for you, or if you plan to tackle the project yourself, this class will cover the essential steps to make your website a success. Topics will include: • Picking the right domain name • How your content has a direct role in your Google placement • How search engines will index your site • How to build a design that will help make selling easier • How to encourage visitors to stay on your website • How to measure the success of your website • The pros and cons of the many do-it-yourself website platforms • Asking the right questions when talking to a professional
While no one can guarantee Google placement, knowing and understanding your website traffic and the behavior of those clients that are actively using your site can help you improve your results and, ultimately, grow your sales online and in-person.
Independent Contractors Vs. Employees In today’s economy, entrepreneurs are looking for every way to run their businesses more efficiently and effectively. In an effort to minimize the hassles involved with payroll, it can be tempting to attempt to reclassify workers as independent contractors. This presentation will provide an explanation of the differences between independent contractors and employees in order to help employers make informed decisions regarding the proper classification of their workers. It will focus on ORS 670.600 - the statute that guides the Oregon Department of Revenue’s compliance checks - as well as the Administrative Rule and consequences of misclassification.. Advanced Social Media Marketing 2-Part Class
Designed for business owners with established accounts on Facebook, this two-session course will delve deep into powerful new paid (and free) advertising opportunities, including an in-depth look at Facebook’s remarkable Power Editor tool, which affords businesses new ways to target advertising very specifically, even here on the Oregon Coast. Session two will ask if you are using the right social media tools for your business. There are many platforms, and each one works differently. Each can provide different results for different types of businesses. They also have different tools, strategies, clients and markets. How can a small business keep up, and find the time to manage their social media effectively – while also having enough time to, you know, run their business? This class will cover the many changes, updates and functionality of each platform, and how to determine which may work best for your particular business. Even in a world of mass marketing and noise, proper use of social media can help you talk directly to clients when they are in the market for your product. This class will highlight changes in social media platforms like: • Facebook’s Instant Articles • Facebook target marketing • Instagram contests • Twitter and Twitter leads • LinkedIn: Marketing, groups, jobs and business pages • Content management and time-saving tricks Newport Friday, April 21 and 28 • 9-Noon • Tuition: $45 Instructor: Misty Lambrecht Lincoln City Friday, April 21 and 28 • 2-5pm • Tuition: $45 Instructor: Misty Lambrecht Waldport Special one-session version of this Advanced Social Media class. It’s never too late for college! Residents 65 or better receive FREE tuition for OCCC credit classes The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong process, and OCCC is pleased to offer senior learners the opportunity to enhance new and existing skills through challenging and intellectually stimulating programs. If you are an Oregon resident who is 65 or older, you may be eligible for free or discounted tuition rates. Seniors get free tuition for credit classes when taken for an audit grading option. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed. The only way to secure a spot in a class is to register early and pay full tuition. Auditing students must be registered for eight credits or less per term. Simply find the credit class you want to audit on pages 12-14, then complete the waiver form found at oregoncoastcc.org (or call 541-867-8501 and request one), and bring it to the first day of class. Your instructor will need to approve the audit. After that, you’ll give the signed form to Enrollment Services Coordinator to verify enrollment and waitlist status. Finally, pay course fees and purchase textbooks and/or other materials not covered by the tuition waiver, and you’re ready! For more information about tuition waivers and credit class schedules, call 541867-8501 or check the schedule in this publication or at oregoncoastcc.org.
Larry Damron is one of OCCC’s volunteer tutors. He also takes advantage of the senior waiver program... and, tutor coordinator Jody Becker notes, “he is quite a character.”

Meet Kelly Gutierrez
Single Mom, Special Olympics Coach & OCCC Student Kelly is a recipient of the OCCC Foundation General Scholarship “Pursuing an education is something I always dreamed of, but kept delaying due to my hectic life. I did not see how I would be able to manage school along with work and my biggest priority, my daughter. I’ve had to make sacrifices due to my daughter’s special needs and I realized how crucial it was to have a career that would financially support both of us for the rest of our lives. “Finding the right career to motivate me through college was important. Being a Special Olympics coach, I discovered the joy of working with our local special needs community. I want to continue those friendships within my career, along with learning skills that would benefit my own daughter. Combining all my passions I discovered my dream job – to be a pediatric occupational therapist assistant! “One of the MANY challenges of going to college is the expense. The day I received the news I had been awarded a scholarship was one of the most challenging days with my daughter. That email gave me hope, it put light on a very dark day, and I could not be more thankful for that. I realized that someone believes in me enough to financially support my education. This scholarship has encouraged me so much! Since classes have started I have had days that I ask myself, ‘What were you thinking going to school? As if life isn’t hectic enough being a single working mom with a disabled child!’ I then remind myself why I am doing this – and of the support I have to do so. This scholarship has contributed to my drive, and I am so incredibly thankful!” You can make a difference! Please give to the OCCC Foundation and help support students like Kelly.
