We look ahead to the future t o evolve to meet the needs of the many communities in Lincoln County. For

example, we are planning college-credit offerings at our Lincoln City site with the intent that over the next few years students will be able to complete a two-year degree in Lincoln City. We are very excited to bring Seatauqua back to Lincoln County. Check out our exciting new offerings this Spring such as Watercolor Paper Jellyfish Sculptures and The Art of Seaweed Pressing. We continue our Williams Lecture series with a focus on Immigration. Local author Virginia Gibbs will present on her book, “Shattered Dreams: The Story of a Historic I.C.E. Raid in the Words of the Detainees.” We have added community education classes in surfing, cartooning, and graphic design. Our SBDC continues to help small businesses prosper with classes like business law and “Winning with Google.” And, a new Community Development Block Grant through Lincoln County offers tuition scholarships for business owners across the county, based on income. If it has been a while since you have taken advantage of all we have to offer, now is the time to take another look. I am so pleased to be working at OCCC, and to plan for the future of the college together with our wonderful students, faculty and staff. We see great things ahead, including growth of the college, expanded offerings, s erving more students and learners, a nd helping to further develop a college-going culture in our county. We look ahead to additional ways to fulfill our mission to enrich the economic and civic vitality of Lincoln County and beyond. In this class, students will learn how to manage their computers, and will learn all the basics, including how to send emails, prepare documents, how to safely surf the Internet, how to download and upload material, how to run diagnostic tests, and how to keep their computer safe from viruses and other maladies. Estate Plans: Wills and Trusts

Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissent in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class will cover the strategies needed for effective management of assets as we age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. We will also consider questions of planning that include IRAs and other retirement assets.

AARP Smart Driver Training

This course explains the changes that occur in vision, hearing, and reaction time as we age, and provides useful driving safety tips to handling these changes, Designed for drivers aged 50 and older who wish to participate in discussions surrounding safety and aging. Oregon State law provides a discount on your auto insurance premium for completing this course. If you have already taken this or a similar course, most insurance companies require that a refresher course be taken every three years to continue to receive the discount, or every two years if you are 70 or over. Understanding Medicare

Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) will present two free Medicare classes this term. The classes cover the history of Medicare, the basics of Medicare (Parts A-D), and those add-ons that can be very confusing. The class is designed for anyone eligible or new to Medicare. It is a valuable class for current beneficiaries that would like a better understanding of their Medicare benefits and options for changes. Spouses and other relatives are also welcome to attend the class. By the end of this class, you will have a better understanding of Medicare and won’t feel so overwhelmed by all of tis complex parts. Handgun Safety

This course will cover the basic fundamentals of safety, the cardinal rules, and responsible operation of a handgun. This course will teach students to understand how to design with type and understand font selection and the basic type families. The projects will be designing “Logotypes,” which are Trademarks based on letterforms alone. As an example, Coca-Cola’s heavy script font is a very memorable Logotype. Students will apply their knowledge of the design development process, from concept to exploration sketches to design refinement. This kind of specialty design is useful in promotional and marketing for print or web. Students will exhibit professional level presentations that are portfolio quality. Internet safety is a shared responsibility between the public, the Internet industry, and the legal community. However, parents remain the ‘first line of defense’ in protecting their children against Internet safety dangers. Disaster Preparedness for the Northwest

Learn what environmental, meteorological and man-made events have struck our region and how to prepare for them in the future. Recognize the need for disaster preparedness, learn about the necessary supplies your family will need to ride out a short-term disaster, and what you’ll need to stay comfortable in the event of a long-term emergency. Surfing for Beginners You’ve never been in the ocean in a wetsuit ... but it’s right there, calling you! It’s time to discover why surfing has become so popular here on the Oregon Coast. Tony Gile (pictured), a local surf-shop owner and experienced instructor, will lead a three-session class designed to make anyone (aged 16 or older, please) comfortable in the water. You’ll learn how to read and understand a surf forecast, to decide when it’s safe to hit the water. You’ll practice “pop-ups” and paddling in the pool at the Lincoln City Community Center, and the class will culminate with a session on the beach, when conditions are just right for your first time. OREGON COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT PROFILE – ANDREA BALTHASER

ndrea Balthaser started attending classes at Oregon Coast Community College in Fall term of 2011. Her goal was to obtain her AAOT and then transfer to a four-year college and work towards a Bachelor’s degree. From there she plans to apply for her Master’s degree in teaching.

In June of 2013 she accomplished the first goal, and graduated from OCCC with her AAOT. She was then accepted to Western Oregon University, where she began classes in September of 2013. If all goes as planned she will graduate in June of 2017 with her Bachelor’s Degree. Andrea has always loved “Kitty’s style of teaching made math and has always dreamed me think outside of the box and of pursuing encouraged me to want to teach a career in teaching the same way with my future high school students,” Andrea said. mathematics. Since arriving on campus at Western, though, she has decided high school math is not the grade level she wants to teach. She has realized that elementary or middle school is where her passion lies. She believes that without the foundation and understanding of math for younger students, the rest of math will never make any sense. Preparing students for high school and college math is what she wants to do, so that they don’t struggle later in life, “when it really counts.” Her goal as a math teacher is to get children to not only love school, but to love math as well. Andrea loved her time here at OCCC and was inspired by her instructors. She felt their dedication to the students and their success was shown through their teaching and their communication with students. Katherine “Kitty” Pavlish was the biggest inspiration of all.

“Kitty’s style of teaching made me think outside of the box and encouraged me to want to teach the same way with my future students,” Andrea said. Andrea also made many new friendships throughout her journey here at OCCC and she says they were also an inspiration to her along the way. When Andrea began her adventure – going back to school – it was not an easy decision. She was a mother to two little boys, ages 5 and 1. However, she wanted to be able to provide for her family and she wanted to set an example for them, showing them that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. seatauqua Octopus Gyotaku

The eight-legged marine octopus fascinates everyone, and also make for a spectacular guotaku- or fish prints. In this class you will be working with small market size octopus, and learning the steps of traditional gyotaku of applying ink to the body of an octopus and pressing rice paper to recieve the image. You will have the opportunity to create at least 10 to 12 gyotaku on rice paper with one specimen, or create an entire “school” of octopus. An additional $15 materials fee is required for this class. Paper Urchins

Join Sarah Gayle for a new paper arts project. Using recycled materials and a simple few simple techniques you can create these organic sculptures during a 6 hour workshop class. Class instruction will cover cutting options, the use of text as value, adding color, glue and assembly step as well as materials for experimenting and a rock to build it all on. Watercolor Paper Jellyfish Sculptures Sarah Gayle’s watercolor paper art sculptures have been part of many community events, and now you can take a class and make some yourself.

This workshop will teach cutting and folding techniques, wet on watercolor, curling and texturizing papers. Mixed media will be incorporated for tentacles. Hung from fish line they make great art pieces and with the addition of small glow sticks, it can even be fun in the dark. Shell Printing

This is the ultimate beach experience and anyone can do it! You will be using acrylics on different papers, pressing the shells, then using metallic washes, creating many pleasing results. You’ll finish by carving your own CHOP (stamps) and you’ll even learn a few Japanese phrases. Later you can print these wonderful works of art and use them in collages, fabric, book covers, wrapping paper, note cards and more! Learn about our local marine algae and make lovely designs with seaweeds dried on paper. These pressed seaweeds can be used for cards, or framed for display, or for a herbarium collection. The forms, colors, and textures of our local red, brown and green seaweeds lend themselves beautifully to this Victorian art form. The class will begin with a short collecting trip to a local beach and then we will meet in the classroom to identify, prepare and then press our collected specimens onto paper. An additional $15 materials fee is required for this class.

williams lecture series: IMMIGRATION

The Story of the Postville Raid

Virginia Gibbs, professor emerita of Spanish now living in Newport, will present a reading and discussion of her new book “Shattered Dreams: The Story of a Historic I.C.E. Raid in the Words of the Detainees” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 24, in the Patrick O’Connor Community Room at the Oregon Coast Community College Central Campus in Newport. The talk will also delve into the challenges immigrants face here in Oregon. The presentation is part of OCCC’s Williams Lecture Series. Published last spring, the book gives the testimonials of 10 workers whose lives were devastated by the largest immigration raid in U.S. history when, in 2008, local and federal authorities entered the Agriprocessor meat packing plant in Postville, Iowa, and arrested what amounted to some 25 percent of the small town’s inhabitants. With special emphasis on women and children, the stories share the lives of each person, beginning in childhood and ending after the raid and subsequent jail sentences. The narrations give voice to the immigrants who were detained and imprisoned for identity theft, though the Supreme Court has since declared that action unconstitutional. In the book, for the first time, the detained workers told their own stories of how and why they came to the U.S., of working conditions in the meat packing industry, of the violent raid itself, and of families torn apart. “Since I first met and heard these immigrants’ stories,” Gibbs said, “I was struck by how much they wanted to tell people who they were and what had happened to them.” Gibbs and co-author Luz María Hernández decided they had to give these men, women and children that opportunity. These true stories vividly portray the fear, violence and harassment suffered by the undocumented, but also show their strength in the face of poverty and inhumane working conditions. U.S. Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez has said that “Postville is . . . still an image that haunts and inspires me. It is a story that must be told and remembered.” Professor Erik Camayd affirms that the “long-silenced voices of the humble migrants victimized by the federal raid at Postville, Iowa, are recovered at last in this volume.” Gibbs moved to the Oregon Coast two years ago and has been a volunteer with Centro de Ayuda and The Immigration Information Response Team. Wendy Williams created the Williams Lecture Series in 1993 in honor of her husband, William Appleman Williams, a noted historian. Williams was known as the “Father of Revisionist History.” He taught American diplomatic history and foreign policy for over 30 years as OSU. His last teaching assignment was at OCCC, where he taught maritime history. Nurses take Capitol steps The second-year OCCC nursing students travelled to Salem on February 10, 2015, to attend the annual “Nurse Lobby Day” sponsored by the Oregon Nurses Association. During Nurse Lobby Day, nurses and student-nurses from across the state join together to learn and discuss legislative issues that are priorities for the nursing profession. The morning session involved speakers on current legislation such as the Safe Staffing Bill, Blood Drive Safety and School Nurse Staffing ratios. The afternoon included lunch at the capitol building, followed by scheduled meetings in small groups with nurses, their representatives and senators to deliver the concerns of the nurses and to ask for support of our issues during this legislative session. The students described feeling motivated by being a part of the political process and by seeing the potential nurses have when working collectively on shared concerns. The Oregon Coast Community College nursing students were active participants in the event and represented our college proudly. – BETTE PERMAN

Recently, GED testing switched from a paperbased version to a computer-based version. Below is the new GED testing information. REGISTERING FOR GED TESTING • Go to the GED Testing Services website at gedtestingservice.com or GED.com • Sign up for My GED. • Watch the short video for information. MAKING AN APPOINTMENT FOR TESTING • Locate a testing center. • Provide the information requested. • Check the testing schedule. • Choose an appointment day and time. • Pay for the test (credit or debit card, voucher). GED TESTING FEES • The fee for each test is $38 • During the year 2014 (and possibly 2015) a testing candidate will be able to take two re-tests

per subject area (8 total). The re-take fee will be discounted to $10. When the special re-take discount rate expires, the fee for each re-take will increase to $38. All initial and re-take fees are paid when a testing appointment is made.

Candidates should refrain from bringing to the testing center large items such as backpacks, purses, laptops and other electronics, notebooks and books. Your personal items must fit in small lockers provided to you during testing. You will be asked to remove large watches and other large jewelry items before entering the testing room. The only things candidates need to bring to the testing center are their ID and car keys (if applicable).

Tuition scholarships available for businesses county-wide Thanks to tremendous support from Lincoln County and the cities of Newport, Lincoln City, and Waldport, and diligent effort by the SBDC staff, the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center has secured a Community Development Block Grant that will help cover the cost of tuition in most SBDC classes and programs for Lincoln County business owners with five or fewer employees, and who meet certain income criteria. Many, if not most, Lincoln County business owners would qualify for grant support if they request it. The process is simple: Just call the SBDC at 541-994-4166 to request a meeting with an SBDC advisor. They’ll provide the necessary forms to determine if you’re eligible, and then will work with you to determine what courses and support are necessary for you to reach your goals, whether it’s simply to rampup your online marketing efforts, or to more broadly improve your business operations across many areas. Before you set up your online store, you first need to know some of the basics. In this class you will learn how to understand the actual processes of selling online. Get Your Recipe to Market

Have you always heard friends tell you, “your strawberry jam is the best I’ve ever had!” Is your grandmother’s famous celery-seed salad dressing just too good not to share? Are you ready to take your favorite recipe to market? In this class, led by Lucinda Whitacre, you’ll learn the fundamentals needed to master and achieve your goals. In the first session, you will answer the question, “What’s the big idea?” You’ll learn to check out the competition, to find out who your target market is and what they will pay for your special delight. Ramp-up your job-seeking skills

Are you preparing to apply for work locally or in other areas? Are you ready to do the research needed to apply? Do you feel prepared to interview and present yourself in the best possible light? Here is an opportunity to learn the skills that will make you more competitive in the job market. This series of four workshops was created for those looking forward to applying for employment. The class will meet from 4 pm to 6 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, May 5 to 15. The workshops are presented by the Small Business Development Center at Oregon Coast Community College and the Rotary Club of Newport. Each of the 12 participants will be mentored and supported as they gain a better understanding of completing a job application, writing a winning resumé and cover letter, and more. It all starts with a COMPASS placement test. 1) Take the College Placement Test Call 541-867-8501 (Central Campus) or 541-996-6222 (North Center) to schedule an appointment to take the COMPASS college placement test to discover which reading, writing and math courses are the best match for your academic level. After the test, you will schedule an appointment to attend a New Student Orientation/Advising Session (see #3, below). 2) Transfer Students If you have previous college credit, call 541-867-8501 to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor. 3) Attend a New Student Orientation/ Advising Session (Required for all new credit students.)
