Herbs for Anxiety and Stress
Oil Painting Using the Wet on Wet Method
People everywhere are struggling with challenging emotions, unhealed trauma, and depression. This class will discuss how to incorporate calming herbs and plants into a daily routine for a more balanced, peaceful and pleasurable life. The class will focus on nourishing the nervous system through adaptogenic, tonic, and nervine herbs. The class is a hands-on educational experience and participants will sample the plants as it covers them. Participants will also craft a stress balancing and uplifting tea blend. Each participant will go home with a bag of the group’s co-created tea. A handout with recipes included.
Learn how to paint an oil painting using the wet on wet method. This method begins with painting the entire canvas with a light coat of oil paint for an easy blending technique. Learn how easy it is to blend and detail as you go, even if you don’t have any previous painting expertise.

Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissension in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches the strategies needed for effective management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. The class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. and will also consider questions of planning that include IRAs and other retirement assets.
“This class is about assisting people in understanding that our own personal belief system and self-talk set us up to perceive the world either negatively or positively,” explains instructor Violet Young. “We are influenced and become preconditioned by and through our upbringing and life experiences. As this happens so slowly during our lives, and we become resigned to the ‘usual outcome,’ we are not conscious of the patterns being formed. After resigning ourselves to the ‘that’s just the way it is’ way of life, there is often the onset of depression and anxiety. By exploring and learning to recognize our own patterns and triggers as well as recognizing that we can give ourselves options to view situations from different perspectives, we can then be open to make choices that painlessly create new growth and joy. During the class there will be time for personal exploration and sharing of personal experiences by class members. The meditation that will be taught has its roots in Zen practice. Birding Basics Do you find yourself listening to an odd chirp while walking or gardening? Are you fascinated by the random rustlings in the bushes? Do you notice and enjoy the birds in your world, but wish you knew more about these clever and busy neighbors? This is just the class for you. Participants will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing. Bird identification, adaption, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this two-week class. Participants will have access to guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. The final day of class will be a field trip to identify birds in the area.

Love Lives Forever “This is a series of three classes designed to assist people who are dealing with the effects of grief and loss, which include anxiety and depression,” wrote instructor Violet Young. “My classes are also appropriate for anyone who is interested in making connections beyond the veil. My classes discuss the concept that Love Never Dies and that connecting with deceased loved ones is possible. I will be presenting my own experiences since my husband crossed over on April 6, 2015, as well as my experiences with other family members prior to this loss. I will also share experiences that I had with my mother when she was in hospice. This will be a forum for people to share their own experiences and thoughts about the possibility that they have received messages from their loved ones. This class is spiritually based, however not religious. I will be assisting people in becoming more open and aware, discerning and receptive of possible messages from loved ones. In my experience, many people have experienced messages and visitations but are often self-conscious or afraid to actually believe it. These classes help people to feel less isolated and confused, leading to more selfacceptance and self-love to assist with the grieving/healing journey.”

It’s time for a little Lab work Pet Manners In this Basic Manners class, we not only help you and your dog learn the basics, but help your dog listen to cues around distractions. We use real-life scenarios so the skills you learn in class can easily be transferred into your home. During this five-week class, you’ll discover how to: • Teach your dog basic cues like sit, down, stay and come. • Practice loose leash walking - even around other dogs, people, and other distractions. • Get your dog to focus on you - especially when you really need it. Five weeks of training total. The first class is an informational session for people only. Requirements • Your dog must be at least 4 months of age for Basic Manners. • Your dog must be spayed or neutered (for dogs under 6 months of age, the spay/neuter requirement is waived). • We require that your dog has shown no known aggression to people or animals. • Your dog must be current on vaccinations appropriate for their age, DA2PP and Rabies required, Bordetella recommended.

AARP Smart Driver Training
Drivers Education
This course explains the changes that occur in vision, hearing, and reaction time as we age, and provides useful driving safety tips to help handle these changes. The course is designed for drivers aged 50 and older who wish to participate in discussions surrounding safety and aging. Oregon State law provides a discount on your auto insurance premium for completing this course. If you have already taken this or a similar course, most insurance companies require that a refresher course be taken every three years to continue to receive the discount, or every two years if you are 70 or over.

This winter, you can take an ODOT-approved Driver’s Education course at our Central County Campus in Newport. Students must have a valid driving permit and be 15, 16 or 17 years of age. Students who turn 18 before the end of the course do not qualify for the DMV drive test exemption. The course is composed of 34 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of observation. Food as Medicine Many medicinal herbs are tasty and can be prepared as food rather than what many typically think of as medicine. The herbs this class will cover are GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) and have been utilized traditionally as food plants or culinary herbs for centuries. This is a hands-on educational experience. Students will learn how to craft herbal medicinal foods, and will discuss various plants and their medicinal properties. The group will begin by crafting a nutritive herbal oxymel with wild and organically grown herbs and foods, then move on to herbal electuaries and elixirs. Participants will go home with a sample of one of the herbal medicines, and a handout with recipes.

Topical Herbal Medicine Making Salves and herbal oils are delightful balms for soothing skin irritation, dryness and inflammation. Botanical infused oils act to extract and preserve the medicinal qualities of herbs, providing a convenient and pleasurable form of topical application. In this hands-on class, students will craft two herbal preparations and will discuss various plants and their medicinal properties. The session will make an herbal infused medicinal oil with local wild plants which can be used as a topical massage oil or crafted into a salve. The group will transform its herbal oil into a healing cream and all participants will go home with a tin of the cocreated topical remedy. Handouts and recipes are included.

Gyotaku Fish Printing Gyotaku is the Japanese art of fish printing. At its core Gyotaku uses the actual fish to achieve a detailed image of the specimen. During this introductory two-hour session, students will gain an appreciation of the art’s history, print a variety of fish species, and learn techniques to paint fish eyes. This workshop is technique driven and focuses on refining each print through critiquing and reviewing . Participants should come with a spirit of adventure and anticipation.

Seatauqua The Seatauqua (see-TOK-wa) was a series of workshops, lectures and excursions that ran for decades in Newport. Coordinated by Oregon Sea Grant, the programs encouraged chautauqua-style discussions by all participants about arts, sciences, coastal ecology and more. Basket Weaving
Create an Open-Weave Tule Basket Learn about western Oregon Tribal history, the importance of Tule for Native American people, Tule plant identification, proper gathering and processing methods along with learning traditional Native American weaving techniques to create a Tule basket. The class is taught by Stephanie Craig, a member of the Grand Ronde tribe and cultural ethnobotanist, a specialist in Northwest Native American basketry. In the class, students will gain insights and skills in how to traditionally process local materials and learn different local tribal weaving techniques and practices.

Nature Printing in Reverse
Mosaic Tiles
Nature printing is the process of deriving a print from a natural object with the use of pigments or inks, in this twist of nature printing, a bleach product (Soft Scrub) is used to remove color from natural fiber fabrics. We’ll use leaves or sliced shells as the carrier. The bleach pastes on the object reacts with dyes and changes or removes the color. The resulting tones can often be a surprise. This is a fun and easy class, who hasn’t accidentally gotten a bleach stain on clothing? You’ll be using your own t-shirts and clothing: they must be a natural fiber (cotton preferred) and the less expensive the product, the easier it bleaches. Students are asked to bring in 3-6 cotton pieces of clothing or fabric.
A basic introduction to the art of mosaics. including a brief history of the art form, as well as the range of techniques applied over time. The opening project will be the production of a mosaic mirror, utilizing the so-called “direct method”, a task that will be completed by the end of the first session. The second session will involve a review of the many materials used in mosaics, and hands-on exercises using a range of tools and techniques that the students will then use during the remainder of the term. It will include illustrations of some of the basic techniques used by mosaicists. The second session will conclude with the students selecting from a large corpus of mosaic pieces a work that they will then proceed to build during the next classes. Whether they complete this single work or proceed to another will depend upon the degree of complexity of their selected work as well as the abilities of the students to master the necessary techniques. The size of the individual projects will vary, and will generally be in the area of 12” x 12”. The remaining sessions will be devoted to the mosaic tasks, and additional instructions, including gluing, grouting, mounting, and framing. Because each student will be selecting his/her unique object, the methods, materials, and processes will vary considerably.

Octopus Gyotaku The eight-legged marine octopus fascinates everyone, and makes for a spectacular gyotaku - or fish print. In this class you will be working with small market size octopus, and learning the steps of traditional gyotaku of applying ink to the body of an octopus and pressing rice paper to receive the image. You have the opportunity to create at least 10-12 gyotaku on rice paper with one specimen, or create an entire “school” of octopus.

Painting in Oils: Still-Life
The bull kelp that abounds in our local waters is an extraordinary material- at various times it has the quality of fabric, leather, or wood. In this class you will weave the flexible dry stipes (stems) of the kelp into a wall hanging, supplemented with other seaweeds such as sea palm, witches’ hair, and feather boa. A piece of driftwood holds the warp, and you select the colors and sizes of the kelp to weave to make a unique and organic wall piece. Students may bring in a piece of driftwood no longer than 15 inches. (optional)
What could be better than painting a colorful still-life indoors with other likeminded people on a cold rainy day? Join Lincoln City artist Katia Kyte for a weekly still-life painting class. Simple, colorful arrangements are a great way to experiment with color, composition, and brushwork. This class will focus on the essentials of oil painting from life and will explore fundamentals of color mixing using a simple six-color palette. Katia will teach students how to set up their own still-life, concentrating on lighting and positioning. Using demonstrations and individual assistance, Katia will explain her process of creating energetic paintings by manipulating values, colors, edges, and brushwork. Personal attention will be given to each student according to his or her current skill level and personal goals in art. All materials are provided ($40 materials fee payable to instructor at first class). Beginning to advanced artists welcome.

It’s never too late for college! Residents 65 or better receive FREE tuition for credit classes Senior citizens age 65 and above get free tuition for credit classes on a space-available basis and taken for an audit. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed. To use the waiver, find the class you’d like to take in the class schedule, but don’t register yet. Print out the senior waiver form and contact the instructor on the first day of class. Get the instructor’s permission to take the class and have her/him sign the form, then return to Student Services in Newport or Lincoln City. After the waiver has been applied to your account, log into myOCCC and pay any fees not covered by the waiver. Registration prior to the first day of class will void the waiver and charges for the full tuition and fees will apply. Note: you must be an OCCC student to use this waiver. Have you been doing your books by hand, on a spreadsheet or not at all? Is QuickBooks too expensive or too complicated for your small business? Wave Apps offers a free online cloud-based solution for small business owners. This class will cover Wave Apps services such as generating the reports needed for loans, taxes and business performance evaluation. Wave Apps works with your checking account with direct downloads from most banks. Wave Apps works from mobile devices, allowing you to generate receipts on the road, invoice on the job site, and take credit cards for a fee of 2.9%, plus 30 cents. Don’t depart another job site without leaving behind the invoice or collecting a payment. There are no monthly fees for Wave Apps, and it is cloud based, so you needn’t be stressed about that old computer you plan to back-up some day. Two years ago, the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners and the Economic Development Alliance of Lincoln County, through their annual Economic Development Grant program, funded a digital studio at the SBDC in Lincoln County. This year, the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center, working hand-in-hand with local hospitality businesses, will present the Lincoln County Star Excellence in Hospitality Certificate program. The course will initially last just two weeks (Tuesday and Thursday evenings), and may be expanded in later terms to allow for more time in the kitchen, focusing on more in-depth culinary skills development. The program is made possible by the support of the Lincoln City Culinary Center, a stunning space on the fourth floor of Lincoln City’s city hall structure, featuring a world-class learning kitchen and restaurant environment. Instruction will be delivered at the OCCC North County Center in Lincoln City as well as inside the Culinary Center.
