Young by Name What’s in a Book Title? Now that we’ve made it past Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night, I’m spending a little time each day promoting my festive book, “Stocking Fillers.” I intended the title to signal that it contains short stories, to avoid upsetting any readers who feel shortchanged by fiction that isn’t in the form of a novel. Only after the book was published did I appreciate the subliminal helpfulness of a title that is also a serving suggestion: “Makes a great, er, stocking filler”, as I have been known to tweet! At any time of year, the choice of book title is a sensitive issue for any author and a make-or-break decision for publishers, who will spike an author’s preference if it’s not commercial. Not that title is an infallible predictor of sales: “Best Seller”, by Timothy B Sagges, languishes in obscurity.

Before and After Classics “The Last Man In Europe” smacks to me of smug tabloid phraseology, reminiscent of The Sun’s infamous 1992 headline, “If Kinnock wins today, will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights”. In 1948, George Orwell’s publishers preferred “1984”, which quickly passed into popular culture as shorthand for an oppressive, controlling regime. Yet if a book with that

title were published today, we’d assume it was a nostalgic memoir of the year in which Sweden won the Eurovision song contest with a song called “Diggi-Loo, DiggiLey.” Now there’s a title of questionable judgement, unlike their compatriots’ allconquering “Waterloo” ten years before. Which leads us neatly into consideration of “All’s Well that Ends Well,” an inappropriately cheery working title for the huge, serious, philosophical tome about the Napoleonic Wars eventually published as Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.”

I discovered too late that in the US, they prefer the term “stocking stuffers” to the one I’ve used for my festive book title. If it wasn’t for its Christmassy cover, they might presume my book is all about legs. I’d like to thank the team behind the perfectly-named Tetbury Advertiser for another year of dedication, hard work, patience and good humour, and to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2016. See you next year! Debbie Young

Even the most carefully chosen titles for international classics can cause confusion. Or is it just me? Until I read it for the first time this autumn, I didn’t latch on to the significance of Harper Lee’s title, “To Kill A Mockingbird” (originally written as “Atticus”). Part way through the book, Miss Maudie explains that it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird, because it does nothing but give people pleasure. It’s thus a symbol of innocence destroyed. Dare I confess that I’d previously assumed a mockingbird to be an annoying parrot-like mimic, an unsurprising target for any short-fused American with easy access to handguns?

Thank Goodness for Book Covers It’s not easy to come up with names that work around the world and across cultures. Vauxhall found out the hard way that in Spanish Nova means “doesn’t go”.

Dear Readers, I was reminded of the Lion’s place as “The Knights of the Blind” the other day, by our District Governor. His personal crusade is to ensure we continue to find and recycle as many pairs of spectacles as possible, so prompted by him I asked Lion Robin Levin if he would check our recent progress in town. He tells me that both Haine and Smith and Poole Optometry continue to provide collection boxes for Vision Aid Overseas and to send the contents off every month. Good! Please contribute your old specs when you upgrade this Christmas will you? Every little helps. Another core aim, our “We Serve” pledge, came up recently when an elderly resident phoned me to speak of her forthcoming house move and to ask if I might find her some help within our ranks. Yes! We will

be assembling a team to do so in the near future – I’ll tell you about it in the February issue I hope, when the bruised knuckles and bad backs will have faded into memory. On the social side we had an excellent car Treasure hunt to take part in this month, arranged by Lion Basil. The fiendish clues led to many a disagreement, I’m delighted to say, and a few householders must have wondered quite what was going on as troops of Lions wandered past their windows trying to figure out things like “How many horses are there at number 21?” The hunt was won by Lions Dave Hicks and Paul Farrow, completely fairly and with no cheating or use of Google to assist them, or moving of clues. No, really! What else? Well I’m afraid we’re going to try and take some of your money again this month, assembling as groups of dogooders in reflective clothing both in the

Spectacles Recycling

Lions Den town centre and also at Tesco. We’ll be selling raffle tickets and taking a collection as usual – and as usual too, I suspect when we do the draw I won’t have won. Now, please do not feel compelled to give if you can’t – just saying hello will keep us happy while we’re standing about; we’re a simple lot who enjoy friendly faces as much as raising money, I promise. Speaking of which, a couple of months ago we passed the hat around at a Lion’s meeting to raise money for Jasper the toy poodle. Giving grants for pet operations is outside our charitable guidelines, unfortunately, but we were very glad to contribute as individuals. I’m delighted to say, then, that Jasper has had his operation and his owner Mrs Robins has been kind enough to send me a letter thanking everyone who contributed, collected and organised the extensive fundraising – particularly Marion Savage.

Donate unwanted glasses and change someone’s life. Imagine if you could help a child read. An adult succeed in his job. A senior maintain her independence. And provide a community with more opportunities to grow and thrive. To help with a continuing Lion’s initiative you can drop off your usable eyewear at either: Haine & Smith Opticians, 5 Church Street Tetbury GL8 8JG Tel. 01666 503610 or Armstrong & North Opticians, 2 Church Street Tetbury GL8 8JG Tel. 01666 502 913 Or contact Brian Gammon briangammon@tiscali.co.uk for information or collection.

Lastly - well it’s not all sunny. (When is it ever, this close to Christmas?) I should have liked to print an ever bigger Advertiser this month, to cater for all the varied contributions received; sadly I cannot – and Mrs McKenzie has written to tell me that there have been several attempted break-ins of late, especially in the area near the top of Chavenage Lane. Householders would be well advised to make sure their property is secured she tells me, lest their festive preparations be spoiled. I thank her for her wise council – appropriate for any time of year. Many thanks to all our Advertisers, Contributors, Distributors and Readers; do have a fabulous Christmas and let’s catch up in February, in the New Year. 0660615

As we head into December, the first days of the month are all about preparations and counting down: parents making lists, and children opening their Advent Calendars. But it does make you wonder about God’s preparations for the first Christmas, because they seem a little haphazard … nowhere for Mary and Joseph to stay, a makeshift cradle, and an odd assortment of visitors. As Milton Jones jokes in his book 10 Second Sermons: “You can imagine Joseph at the inn in Bethlehem holding a crib of straw and saying ‘No, I asked to see the manager!’”

And yet, there are also the angels - the skies filled with the Heavenly Hosts and a Joyful Fanfare to announce the birth of Jesus. That’s an impressive alternative to birthannouncement cards and emails! So perhaps there’s a message somewhere in all this, not to mind too much if we can’t do everything on our list, or make it all perfect. We just need to make enough space for the real joy of sharing and generosity and love at Christmas.

Special highlights have been our Remembrance Sunday service which is always so poignant. And then we had all the children from St Mary’s School – all 287 of them – on stage for concerts on Thursday 12th November doing “iSingPop” – mixing pop and faith together to produce a great mix of singing with lots of dance moves. It was fabulous to share that with so many people.

Every Sunday at our 9.30am service, children enjoy stories and crafts in our Little Fishes Sunday School. We also have the candle-lit Christingle Service with carols on Sunday 13th December at 4pm. And we have our Crib Service on Christmas Eve at 4pm, with special help from children at St Mary’s Primary School.

As November draws to a close, it is wonderful to reflect on how much we have shared with the wider community this month.

As you read this we will hopefully have just had a successful Christmas Fair on 28th November, complete with Reindeer Rodeo, mulled wine, Christmas gifts and games as well as wonderful raffle prizes. This event is one of our main fund raising events of the year by FOCS – our Friends of Crudwell School – and will go, in the first instance, towards three theatre trips for Reception children, Years 1 to 3, and years 4 to 6. More news of all of these events in our next newsletter! During the first week of this term 36 of our children in Years 3 to 6 took part in

a Cross Country competition organised by Malmesbury School. Altogether 300 children entered the event and, for the first time in two years, the event wasn’t cancelled due to water logged grounds! It was perfect cross-country weather! One of our girls’ teams ran particularly well ending up in 3rd place. Another smaller group of children have enjoyed taking part in a Boccia competition at Devizes School. Boccia is an indoor game, similar to Boules, where each team aims to be close to the Jack. This was the first time we’d taken part in this activity and the children enjoyed learning and improving their skills as part of the event. The competition was intended especially for

Crudwell C of E Primary School children with SEN needs or difficulties with coordination, so some participants taking part were wheel-chair bound. We’re already looking forward to our next Boccia event. As I write, we have teams of boys and girls all looking forward to the forthcoming football and netball tournaments. Outcomes of those events next time. Apart from our fundraising for the school, we have continued to be busy with our fundraising for others. Our Harvest collection this year was for Malmesbury and District Food bank, when the children succeeded in filling my car boot with lots of dried goods to support those in need in the local community. Looking further afield, a number of our children have packed shoeboxes for the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Appeal. Early in the New Year we hope to find out which country they have gone to. I know several of the children have enclosed a short message too. As I write, I have just heard the school choir practising their first Christmas Carol. I also know that our Christmas production of Babushka in Years 1 to 3 and our Reception class’ Nativity will be well underway by the time you read this. So, on that note, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas. Kathrine Hume, Headteacher

Mayor’s Report

new costumes. Well done to everyone who took part.

I love to see the autumn colours and although I am no lover of the cold weather I do love seeing the different seasons. As the weather is getting colder can we all be “good neighbours” and if we know of anyone who struggles to get out and about that we offer help if it is needed. There has been a Malt House Meeting and we have a better understanding of what needs to be done – but nothing comes cheap as we all know, and a lot of money will need to be found.

The German Choir visit was a great success and it was lovely to see them and to hear their singing. The Goods Shed have now launched their calendar and all profits from the sale of each calendar go directly back into the Goods Shed Fund raising pot. If you haven’t bought your calendar yet please do! It is lovely and can be purchased several retailers in the town, as well as from the Town Council offices.

weekend to commemorate Remembrance Day and to have a look round our town. We hope that we will be able to strengthen the ties, especially for our youngsters in the town. Our thanks goes to Maggie Heaven for arranging this. The Dolphins Hall now has a new chairman, Maggie Heaven. I am sure the trustees will welcome her and support her in these exciting times ahead. The youth group are upper most in our minds and hopefully they will have new accommodation in the near future, they so need it.

Thank you to the Lions for their kind invitation to the Charter Dinner, it was a lovely event.

Whatever you are doing this Christmas, whether you are at home or away, Tetbury Town Council send our good wishes for a very Happy Christmas.

Several of us on the Council had the chance to be “Dragons” at a special Dragons Den hosted by Sir William Romney School. There is a wealth of talent at the school and some brilliant ideas. We were impressed with them all, but unfortunately we only had one pot of money to give – however, I did give a special prize from the Mayor’s allowance to the Drama Group, for some

Tetbury Camera Club On the 20th of October we were treated to an informative view behind the scenes in the life of professional photographer Matt Bigwood. Matt is well known to our Club having been a member for some years and it was interesting to see the scope of his professional work in both still and video. Along with numerous anecdotes, there were some very moving and thought-provoking images taken on his visits to Rumania and Kosovo. More recently, Matt has been exploring the concept of capturing the passage of time in a single image. He showed us some very accomplished examples to illustrate the point, including a time lapse sequence capturing a night’s worth of Perseid meteors streaking across the sky. All in all, a very enjoyable and informative talk. On Thursday the 22nd of October, nine Club members gathered at Cheltenham Station for a visit to Birmingham. This was our third visit to Birmingham in the last couple of years, such is the attraction of the centre of this city. This time we were seeing

the recently opened and remodelled New Street Station for the first time, with its airy atrium and shiny exterior reflecting the surroundings. Then it was on to Selfridges, the Edwardian Tea Rooms of the City Museum and Art Gallery and Millennium Square, including their new-ish library. On the following Tuesday, Mike Hawkridge gave his “Starry Starry Night” talk on landscape astrophotography – a beginner’s guide to the ins and outs of this fascinating branch of photography. He covered some basic astronomical theory relating to our galaxy, the Milky Way, to set the scene. He then explained what was needed to take photographs of the Milky Way and the landscape. Throughout the talk he showed us night sky images taken in various locations. Hopefully a few more members will now feel confident to try this out for themselves – British weather permitting! (A list of useful links is included on the ‘Information’ page of the Club website.) The next meeting was an internal competition judged by Ted Wilson of Gloucester Camera Club. The winning image in the print section is reproduced here, taken by Liz Cooper.

Most recently, we had a ‘Show and Tell’ evening. It was very interesting to see how each of the seven club members involved had different photographic histories and their images covered a very wide spectrum. If you wish to improve your photographic skills (or just enjoy looking at pictures) why not come along to a meeting? Please feel free to visit as a guest at some of our meetings and see what goes on, hopefully with a view to becoming a member. Tetbury Camera Club meets at 7.30 pm on Tuesday evenings at the Priory Inn, Tetbury. We are a very friendly group and anybody with an interest in photography will be very welcome to visit and get an idea of our activities and meet club members. Have you checked how much you are paying for Broadband? Many providers have increased their costs recently. Do check how much you are paying as you may get a much better deal elsewhere. A number of my clients have recently seen their costs for Broadband, telephone and other add on services significantly increase over the last few months. Although most Internet Service Providers have put their prices up, some have found costs have jumped significantly. If you are with BT, do check that you are not being charged for BT Sport if you do not want it. If you are in contract the sport is usually £5 a month, but once your contract ends, this can jump to £20. The recent option to upgrade to Fibre within Tetbury is an ideal time to renegotiate your contract and hopefully reduce your costs. A renegotiated 18 month contract could see your month debit reduce and you may also be entitled to a new router at the same time.

If you only need Broadband and telephone calls, do shop around as there are some great deals around at the moment. At the time of writing, one provider is offering 18 months of free unlimited broadband with only the £17 line rental to pay. Evening and weekend calls are only £3 per month, but you will pay for all other calls. How does that compare to your current tariff?

Be safe online With the various security breaches that are making the headlines, do be careful. Never reuse passwords, make sure passwords are never just words with simple numbers, use capitals with special characters if you can and substitute letters for numbers, to make them more difficult to break. If possible, do not save your credit/debit card information on websites. If you would like more help with this, do get in touch.

Cash back websites Over the festive season many of us will be buying online. If you are, do make use of cash back websites that can give you

Computer Advice money back just by clicking through them to the website of your choice. This cash can be paid back directly in to your bank or PayPal account. This can also be done for insurance, energy switching and broadband etc. The money can run into £100’s so do check it out. If you would like more information, do get in touch. Well, here we are almost at the end of 2014. Thank you so much for your support over the last year and I do hope my editorials have been useful to you. Do have a great Christmas and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year. If you have any queries or would like to book your PC in for a security check, need help setting up your new computer/ laptop/tablet or to have an annual service, please do get in touch. The Committee of the Patient Participation Group (PPG) has met in September… …and October under their new chair Jennifer Skillen. There was much to discuss including news from the practice given by the Practice Manager Kesh Makhecha. Doctors Jones and Willis have both left the practice; it would seem that to those in the decreasing pool of GPs small market towns are not their first choice. We are delighted then that this did not bother Drs Shaikh and Truckle, who have temporarily stepped in to breach the gap. Alison Cole

the new head nurse has settled in well and is supported by nurses Anne Green, Rachel Grey and Pippa Ashley and health care assistant Michelle Bailey. The always smiling Sam Lloyd, receptionist, has also left and her place has been taken by Angela Harrison whom many of you may recognise from elsewhere in town. The PPG wishes them all well. Kesh reports that there is no news on the premises front, but that the dialogue continues. It is Flu Vaccination time again and reminders are everywhere for elderly people and others, who, because of existing health problems, are at risk, to be vaccinated. Please don’t be polite and

Patient Participation Group wait for the letter to come through your door inviting you to come to the surgery for your jab. Be proactive and make the appointment yourself and save the practice the additional work of chasing up those who are at risk but have not been vaccinated. For further information you can also visit the NHS England website and click on Stay Well This Winter. Another way you can help the practice, especially with the winter approaching when the doctors are at their busiest, is to consider using the app ASAP Glos NHS, or, the website www.asapglos.nhs.uk or, phone NHS 111 or, pop into the pharmacy to ask the pharmacist’s advice, before making an appointment to see the doctor as the first port of call. The Therapeutic Water Exercises continue at Cirencester pool every Tuesday afternoon and a group goes from Tetbury on free door to door transport. All who attend really enjoy themselves as well as feeling the benefit of the exercises. There are a few spare places on the bus so if you would like to join the group please contact Pat Hodges on 01666 502706. In conjunction with the surgery the PPG is planning to hold an evening session for patients on Social Prescribing when Helen Edwards and Sarah Clifton-Gould will come and share their vast experience in this area with patients. Look out for posters or look us up on our new twitter account for more information. https://twitter.com/@ romneyPPG. Many of you will have taken part in the Family and Friends Survey held in the surgery which was part of a national NHS study. The results of this very brief survey are currently being analysed at the surgery. The PPG is looking for a minute taker to take minutes at their meetings. This is not an onerous task and there are no other secretarial duties involved. If you feel you could undertake this job you would be made very welcome. Guiding

If you were a Brownie or a Guide I am sure that some of your favourite memories involve camps and pack holidays. Charlotte and the other Leaders of 1st Tetbury Brownies gave up 3 days recently so that another 18 Brownies will have some wonderful memories! Here is Charlotte’s report: “Our Pack Holiday theme was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and not only did the girls complete a sweetastic challenge badge but they also earned the Brownie holiday and entertainer badges. Hannah came away with the bravest Brownie award having overcome home sickness – and as she managed to take part in the whole pack holiday we were all super proud of her. Kira was named the most helpful Brownie. The “Marshmallow Pillows” won the best six of the Pack Holiday having won 21 chocolate coins, although all the girls were really well behaved. Our activities included making truffles and coconut ice; wonka hats and edible jewellery. We tried glass painting, chocolate tasting and “sweetastic dancing” - a fun activity involved trying to manoeuvre chocolate squares from foreheads to mouths without using hands! We were lucky with the weather on Monday evening so were able to have an outside camp fire with singing. Here are some of the things the girls said they enjoyed: Hannah loved making the sweet jewellery and the leaders helped her feel better when she was missing home. Kayla liked the outside camp fire with the songs. Ella enjoyed spending time away from her parents and with her Brownie friends. Rebecca actually enjoyed helping to keep the Brownie house clean and tidy. Mckenzie enjoyed making her wonka bedroom hanger and Chloe just enjoyed chilling with her monkey! I would like to say a big thank you to Fran, Carlie, Kate, Claire, Leomi and Kerry for all their help during the Pack Holiday.

Well done Charlotte! It all sounded wonderful and I was sorry that I could not fit in a visit. Your fellow volunteer leaders all know how much time and effort has to go into organising such an event and I know from seeing some of the comments you have had that the Brownies and their parents appreciated it too!

Guide Hannah will be fundraising for her International trip and the Brownies will be selling cakes!

Please support our stalls at the Christmas lights switch on evening. Ist Tetbury

We must never forget our ethos at Tetbury Town Football Club; football for all, where children of all abilities are welcome to join and be part of a ‘family’ that can provide individuals with so many life skills. As the children get older the football becomes more competitive and this has never been more evident than for our under 15’s. The squad has grown over the season to 20+ and the players can be

commended on the work ethic they show at training, to the performances they give on the pitch. Over the next few years, these players will progress into our seniors, strengthening the squads in place and also rewarding the coaches who work so hard with these players. Well done boys, keep up the good work! We are a progressive and well-run football club and have people who donate hundreds of hours to running the club, the teams and to looking after all our players.

Tetbury Town Football Club It has always been the aim at Tetbury Town Football Club to offer football for all. That’s what we do and that’s what we are good at! Looking ahead, the club has revealed exciting plans to create a youth council that will allow youngsters to have an input on how they want the club run and ideas for the future. With Christmas fast approaching, final preparations are in place for our Christmas party. Mr Whizz will amaze us with his magic; DJ Sweet and Lightening will provide a disco that the children always enjoy and presents are now on the production line at the elf factory. Fingers crossed they will arrive on time! Celebrations start at 1.30pm in the Dolphins Hall on Saturday 19th December. There will also be fancy dress games at the Recreation Ground, where our under 11’s and 13’s will be playing fun games against parents. Last year’s highlight was when Scooby Doo played a one two with Father Christmas, passed the ball inside to an elf, who unleashed an unstoppable shot with his wellington boot flying past Mrs Doubtfire’s head! Our large team of coaches will also be dressing up again when the Football Club’s annual fancy dress charity pub crawl takes place. Saturday December 12th will see a small army of various characters making their way around the town. I am particularly looking forward to seeing our Under 11 coach as one of the seven dwarves – Happy!

Tetbury Art Society In a departure from our usual demonstrations, on 4th November we had an ‘inspiration swap’ evening… …the last of the greatly-enjoyed evenings arranged by Maureen Hawkridge for 2015. The idea was that we should each bring materials and an interesting object for somebody else to work with for the evening. This was something new for us and seemed to be enjoyed. As a deliberate change from my usual very formal watercolours, I tried printing using acrylic paint and leaves brought along by Lesley over a blue background applied using a washing-up sponge – my young grandchildren would have felt quite at home (but with washable paint!) Meanwhile, with a little help from Anthea, Allan was discovering the pleasure of pastel painting and Doreen was using a pencil to do some figure-drawing. In another corner, some Chinese brushpainting was in progress.

there will be time for visiting the museum or doing a little Christmas shopping. Then on 2nd December, we hold our Christmas Social which marks the end of the 2015 programme. Margaret Morgan, our Social Secretary, has sold 50 tickets to members to fund her catering which, I am sure, will be magnificent. There are no other activities then until our AGM on 3rd February apart from the committee’s background work of wrapping up 2015, for instance finalising the accounts, and preparations for the AGM - finalising the programme for 2016. As we approach the end of 2015, we wish readers

of our column a Happy Christmas and Good Health in 2016. Information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666503926. We meet on the evening of the first Wednesday of most months in St Michael’s Hall, Silver Street, Tetbury at 7:30 pm and you will find that we are a friendly group welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached. A coach trip to the Royal West of England Academy exhibition in Bristol is being arranged for Saturday 28th November by Barry. We go most years and I am told that one of our members has a picture on display this time. After looking around the exhibition,

Probus One Keep Out! This was the message conveyed by the large defensive earthwork King Offa constructed, between his kingdom of Mercia and the neighbouring kingdom of Powys, in the 8th Century. According to folklore, any Welshman found to the east of the dyke had his ears cut off. The Welsh hanged any Englishman found on the western side. Nothing as extreme occurred on the 15th of October, when Bob Browning described his ten-day 187-mile walk along the route of the dyke from Prestatyn to Chepstow. Instead, we heard amusing stories of the people he met, places he saw, accommodation in which he stayed and of the hazards he had overcome. Only 80 miles of the ‘ditch and bank’ construction remain, but views of these and the Welsh mountains and rivers, coupled with Bob’s reminiscences, all resulted in an entertaining tale. From land we went to sea on the 29th of October, when Denis Cartwright relayed the events leading up to several maritime collisions and the results of the subsequent enquiries. Having explained how the calculation of naval ship tonnages differed from that used for civilian ships, Denis included accidents involving the Olympic, Andrea Doria and Queen Mary in his concise and characteristically informative talk. Several of the smaller ships involved in some of the collisions he described by no means came off worse - because of their reinforced bows, intended for ice-breaking or ramming an enemy ship. Nonetheless, the major losses of life which resulted were often inevitable.

explaining the arrival in 1530, and the influence of, the old-established Order of St John. Peter then described how and why Malta had been besieged by the Turks in 1565, by Napoleon in 1798, and finally in 1940 - 1942 by the Axis powers. He had been living in Malta since 1935, enjoying a happy boyhood. Illustrating his talk with many scenes of Malta, he mentioned that the Turks had used human heads for cannonballs and explained that the Knights of St John, although a naval force, could not repel Napoleon, as they were not allowed to fight another Christian nation. Eventually evacuated to Gibraltar and then England, Peter told us first-hand stories of life in Malta during the siege of this strategicallyimportant island, and relayed accounts of subsequent events such as the arrival of relief convoys. It was a very personal story, told to a very attentive audience. The very firm message, once again, was Keep Out! Merry Christmas, Theo Stening, Probus 01666 504243

wounding ten others. Eskimo continued the fight, though, using her rear guns. After the battle, her bulkhead was shored up with Norwegian timber in the Lofoten Islands and she then steamed across the North Sea without a bow. She was then repaired and returned to service. The shipyard did a good job; she survived the remainder of the war, going out East in 1945 and returning to Portsmouth in 1946, with my father as Chief Engineer. Richard Glanville

Not many people have been under siege in their lifetime, but Peter Payne is one who has. In his talk on the 5th of November he summarised the early history of Malta,

Dear Editor, Some of your readers may like an explanation of the photo of HMS Eskimo used to illustrate the November Probus article. Her bows were blown off by a torpedo fired from a German warship at the second battle of Narvik on the 13th of April 1940, killing fifteen crew and seriously

Tetbury in Bloom Thank You! We continue to receive many complements about the quality of Tetbury’s floral displays – thank you. I was delighted to hear that some residents have been inspired by the Tetbury in Bloom planting schemes. What is it they say? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! It has been another wonderful season despite the challenges the weather has thrown at us. The spring displays of narcissus brought an early splash of colour and were particularly beautiful. The geraniums blossomed in the midsummer sun, transforming the flowerbeds and tubs. The begonias made a spectacular display of hanging baskets, despite the cold weather in May and first half of June, giving them a very difficult start. The Open Gardens Day on 28th June was another great success. A special thank you to

Pat and Lance Vick, and Sue and Stephen Hirst for opening their beautiful gardens to the general public; to the Womens’ Institute for their many delicious cakes and for running the cafe; and to everyone who visited for all their support. Weren’t we lucky with the weather? The annual Race Night on 24th October was a lot of fun, raising a smile and valuable funds for Tetbury in Bloom and Christmas in Tetbury projects. Thank you to the race sponsors: Bell House Dental Practice, Clark and Maslin, Highgrove Enterprises, Perry Bishop and Chambers, Priory Gym, Tetbury Hardware, The Lions Club of Tetbury, and The Tetbury Tailor. Thank you to Highgrove Enterprises (our main sponsor), Tetbury Town Council, The Lion’s Club of Tetbury, the Feoffees, The Rotary Club of the South Cotswolds and St Marys’ Parochial Church Council and the many residents and small businesses within the town, for their financial support. Tetbury Community Choir Which elf sings “Love me tender?” Santa’s little Elvis! First of all – a Merry Christmas to all choir members and to all our supporters in Tetbury. We had our last session in November, practising Christmas music and getting ready for the big switch-on on 3 December. This was as usual a great local festive event, and we really enjoyed singing with the Avening Silver Band.

singing, and other patrons were very kind in allowing us to ‘entertain’ them, with our impromptu renditions of some of our favourite tunes. They returned to Zwingenberg laden with gifts from Tetbury, and some return visits have already been organised! We start our new term in early February with the AGM; the first singing session will be the week after this. Check the website

Before this we had the visit to Tetbury from the Unisono choir from Zwingenberg. Both Choirs had a marvellous time, starting with the Civic reception, where the Mayor and our Choir welcomed them to Tetbury at the Market House.

The concert the next day was a really uplifting event. Thank you to all the Tetbury residents and not-so-locals that came out to Long Newnton church to see us. The programme was a charming mixture of songs old and new. We were able to cross the language barrier when both Choirs sang the German folk song made famous by Elvis – Wooden Heart. On the Saturday we hosted a delicious dinner for them at the Horseguards, Brokenborough. We were unable to resist

It’s a while since I heard the ‘call’ of a lunch in town, so it seemed only right and proper to heed it by coaxing ‘Flossy’ out to one of the daytime specialists Café 53, which, unusually for Tetbury, remains relatively unchanged since opening. Yes, it’s grown a little, and the garden’s been developed for outside eating, but the ambience, menu and casual décor (influenced by ‘Domestic Science’, to which it’s connected) have been consistent

throughout. And by the way, I also recommend the shop as a charming way to spend some time before treating yourself in the café. Another good thing about Café 53: it’s one of the only places I know that offers a ‘proper’ sandwich i.e. two slices of fresh bread with a filling, instead of an inadequately stuffed ciabatta - often the tired go-to of many outlets these days. So, with sandwich in mind, we headed inside.

Eating Out Beating the lunch-rush, we had plenty of time to study the menu and, chalked onto boards above the glass garden doors, the tempting specials, including soups, chicken cordon bleu, spare ribs and a home-made scotch egg, which we readily agreed was perfect to share as a ‘starter’. A far cry from the ones my mother used to make (but not quite keep together), or those supermarket deli counter things of seemingly pretend egg wrapped in pinkish wadding, this had a nice crunch on the outside of tasty sausage meat, with a just-hard-boiled real egg, served on fresh, dressed salad. Very nice. Having set my heart on a sandwich thereafter, I chose a well-filled chicken and mayo, which was a good size and un-fussily presented. Since so much else there is ‘home-made’, it would’ve been nice for the mayo to be so, too, but that’s being picky. The granary bread was good - a tiny bit dry but not enough to warrant complaining. However, on paying the bill I mentioned it to our very welcoming host, who apologised sincerely, telling me that ‘heads would roll’ as a consequence… Flossy chose the house burger with bacon, cheese, fries and salad and oh, my goodness… it was absolutely delicious! The burger was probably the juiciest and tastiest she’s had and was fully complimented by having real cheddar on top - not that scary, square orange stuff that comes in pre-prepared slices. I was told years ago that much research has gone into developing processed ‘cheese’ slices that stick only to the burger and not to the bun – as if the lack of any real cheese flavour wasn’t already enough of a worry! Anyway, the bacon was also very tasty; the portion of fries was good, too. An excellent choice, for sure.

0050315

To finish, some desserts were available, but more appealing to me were the home-made cakes on the counter. Unsurprisingly, Flossy was full, but I couldn’t resist a slice of lemon and lime polenta cake – rich and buttery, with a gentle citrus tang that was very moreish. With a rich, deep-flavoured latte or two, the whole thing was highly enjoyable and, at £33 all in, pretty good value, I reckon. I’ll be sure to heed that call again… 340208 Piano Tuition

Tetbury Nursery Playgroup Children and parents came back… …after half term to a new playgroup room and everyone really liked the changes. Some children wanted to know where the other room had gone, and they keep looking up at our ceiling in awe!

We are aiming to do the double glazing in the summer break of 2016, so at Playgroup we are also busy raising money for this. We are hoping to have a spring ladies shopping event leading on from the success of our first one. At Playgroup and Crèche this month we have been looking at Diwali, Bonfire Night and Remembrance Day. The children have made lots of displays to

Not only did we have the ceiling lowered we also had the walls painted and we rearranged the areas to lower the display boards into the children’s eye line. We are already seeing the benefits of these changes; it is warmer, the room is quieter, children stay on task better and they can have total control over where their work is put.

Harvard Place For Wycliffe Sixth Former. Wycliffe student Amelia Henley, has been awarded a place at Harvard – the world’s top university. friend of his father. He performed magic and escapology as an amateur in the Bristol area for around 30 years and still lives locally, at Kingscourt.

We were extremely pleased to have a visit recently from Alex Nichols, the celebrated author and collector of handcuffs and restraints, who donated the museum’s display back in 1987. In the 1960’s Alex worked for the Somerset, Bristol and Gloucestershire Probation Service, visiting various penal institutions and his interest in handcuffs began in his late teens when shown a pair belonging to a policeman

The collection was previously housed in the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham and whilst we were aware that it is the largest on public view in the UK, it seems our collection is probably the largest on public display in the world! We are now looking into the prospect of registering it as a ‘national collection’. And now for another of the Cold Case Files we know many enjoy reading.

Highway Robbery 1884 A serious case of highway robbery and attempted murder occurred on Thursday night at Tetbury, a village a few miles distant from Stroud.

Est. over 25 years by Gill Butler, Veterinary Nurse. Small, family run business with heated facilities and walks included.

A man named William Clarke, 64 years of age, who attended a sale with the object of buying some pigs, was heard to remark that as prices were too dear he would have to take his money back again. This was overheard by two men, Samuel Rigsby and Frederic Hind; fortunately it happened that they were followed by a fourth person, for reasons of his own.

Daily boarders welcome. Elderly/pets on medication accepted. New improved clipping facilities. www.woodlanekennelscattery.co.uk : Email woodlane3@btinternet.com Bath Road, Willesley, Glos. GL8 8QX : Tel: 01666 880314

Rigsby and Hind were later discovered beating Clarke - and on being interfered with by some persons passing, they for the time desisted, making the plea of drunkenness for their conduct. However the assault was afterwards continued and Clarke was found insensible in a pool of blood. He recovered consciousness, when he then said “They have robbed me of £10!”. Clarke was found to be wounded in almost every part of the head, and he was one mass of bruises. He is not expected to recover. The men Rigsby and Hind have been arrested.

Switch-On Event Remember that the annual switch-on of the town centre Christmas lighting displays will take place on at 6pm, prompt, on Thursday 3rd December. For a full calendar of events, please refer to last month’s Advertiser article, “What’s On” on page 3, or check out our website: www.christmasintetbury.org.uk. Look out for entertainment by the Big Brunch Band and the Wassailers of Stroud. Also view the “Best Christmas Window” displays.

Thank you to Katie Rowlett for her support with switching on the lights and to Mr and Mrs Lowsley-Williams for their kind donation (once again) of the majestic trees that stand alongside the entrance to the Market Hall. Many thanks also go to the bell ringers, Avening Silver band and the community choir for adding that festive note to the evening. Christmas in Tetbury work in dressing the Market Hall, all the trees that adorn the shop premises and supporting us with the road closures. Also to the first aiders and police for their support and oversight – without whom it would not be possible to put on such an event. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Highgrove Enterprises who have sponsored all the new lights within the town and the gifts Santa will give to the children when they visit the Grotto on the Switch On evening. Another big thank you to Artique for not only their very kind donation, but for their help with creating such a magical Santa’s Grotto. Also to Tetbury Town Council, the Lions Club of Tetbury, The Feoffees, Elite Wealth Management, Martin White Jewellers, Moloh, Taylor Black, Bay Gallery and The Tetbury Tailor, without whose generosity we would not be able to fund the lighting displays or the evening of entertainment. Still to look forward to, is the Christmas lunch on Sunday 6th December at the Royal Oak - this has become a wonderful addition to the fundraising calendar and is an excuse to dress up. All tickets are now sold. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Christmas in Tetbury committee. Liz Farnham Christmas in Tetbury

Avening WI Runners-up in the Gloucestershire County Quiz Our team Penny Fernando, Gill Thomas, Ina Turner and Di Wall achieved a magnificent result, up against the best WI brains in the County. We are so proud of them! Our Skittles team are in the final of the Plate Competition this month, having won their semi-final match at Harescombe against Marle Hill WI. The Willow Weaving session was greatly enjoyed by the members that took part at the Social Club. This year we made reindeers, Christmas decorations and wreaths, no end to our talents! Another successful craft session produced some beautiful little dresses made from unwanted pillowcases. These will be sent abroad for needy children.

Our Fun Quiz went very well and we had lots of visitors for a brain-teasing evening and a tasty ploughman’s supper. Derek was kept busy at the bar of the Social Club. We shall be giving a donation to Shelter Boxes from the proceeds – and we were so lucky with the weather for our walk around Malmesbury in October. The sun shone and it was more like a day in summer; the dogs took full advantage of the river to cool off! Afterwards we had lunch in the garden of “The Smoking Dog” in the town.

We are looking forward to our Christmas shopping trip – this year going to Cardiff at the end of November and our usual minibus will be taking us to the Federation Carol Concert in Cheltenham Town Hall at the beginning of December. Our Christmas lunch has been arranged at The Snooty Fox. We have our Christmas party and “Bring-and-Share” supper at our meeting. In November it is the AGM and our speaker Tim Mayo is giving us a talk entitled “There is nothing like a Dame.”

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, A quick update for you on the progress of matters involving the Malthouse: The survey of the Grade II listed building is now finished so when it is received the renovation plans can be drawn up. Fundraising is starting, too, so I would urge your readers to please look out for us at the Christmas in Tetbury Evening on Thursday 3rd December. Juliet Fenton Malthouse Renovation Committee Dear Editor, The Tetbury Scout Group Christmas post will take place in December and boxes will go out in shops around Tetbury on the 1st December, for posting on Saturday 19th December. Please post your letters at Tetbury Hardware, Tetbury Tourist office, Tenovus, Hampton Stores and Tetbury Treats and Sweets. Local post only please!

Four hundred pounds was raised – a fantastic effort by all concerned. Many thanks and Compliments of the Season, Maureen Clarke Dear Editor, As you confirmed in print last month, Tetbury is about to witness an explosion of house building initiatives in the coming months, giving us, in my opinion, an excess of housing required for a town this size. What it offers, whether we like it or not, is a wide selection of 2,3 and 4 - bedroom houses. Yet recently Tetbury Town Council approved the building of a single new 2 - bedroom house on a very small green field site in Cutwell, on a steep hill with a blind entrance behind an old cottage close to a bat nesting site, more in keeping with a conservation area than a site for a new build. On a completely inappropriate site, where exactly is the demand for this new house?

Merry Christmas,

Hopefully this application will be full reviewed by the proper channels at the CDC. Let’s hope they do the job our local council failed miserably to do.

Christine Higgs

Dear Editor, The Save the Children committee would like to thank everyone who supported our coffee morning on Oct 14th – and particularly David at the Priory Inn, who sponsored the event.

Dear Editor, Listening to the local TV news this evening I gather a lad from Tetbury called Danny Kent has just become the World Moto3 Motorcycle World Champion at a race in Spain over the weekend.

Might this make interesting news in the Advertiser? If he’s not racing perhaps he might come to judge the Wacky Races next year? Or even take part? Alan Cross Ed. Indeed! Heartiest of congratulations to Danny from us all; his is a memorable achievement. There’s always room for an entrant in the Wacky Races of course – if he’s 530212 Pat testing:Layout 1 17/1/12 willing to dispense with an engine!

“The Bloodhound” supersonic car – and Tetbury traffic At the October meeting of the Civic Society members and visitors listened and watched an enthralling presentation by the Bloodhound Ambassador, Martin Evans. Many points of great interest arose and a few of them I have set out below: The Bloodhound is a jet- and rocket-powered super Sonic Car built using both vehicle and aircraft technology. It is 13.4m in length with 4 wheels weighing 7.5 tonnes and having 135,000 horsepower, which is more than six times the power of all the Formula 1 cars on a starting grid put together. 250208 JS Painters & Decorators

It has been built in Bristol. The driver is an RAF fighter pilot, Andy Green, and the car with all its technology has been shaped and built around the driver. Without Andy the whole project of seeking to break the existing land speed record of 753 mph could not be carried out. It is hoped to reach at least 800 mph at the first attempt, with a later target of 1,000 mph. The car is to be tested at various low speeds (up to 200 mph) at Newquay’s Cornwall Airport within the next few months - and the attempt on the record will take place in South Africa next year. There are several competitors building other cars to break the record, but it is understood that their projects are not as advanced. 22/2/08

Tetbury Civic Society Tetbury Traffic Now to the other side of the spectrum Tetbury town centre traffic. First I must refer to the excellent wide-ranging and eminently supportable article on Page 32 of the November issue of the Tetbury Advertiser, written by a Newcomer to Tetbury. I refer to only one of the named opportunities for improvement to the town; reducing though traffic. I have to say that this is essential otherwise it will simply get worse and worse, especially with all the new housing development taking place. Tetbury must not be allowed to suffer the decline in environment and prosperity which will result from doing nothing. The Civic Society has already put forward a detailed scheme in preparation for both the Neighbourhood Plan and the Cotswold Local Plan to the Tetbury, Cotswold and Gloucester councils. Yes, through traffic can be reduced and other traffic and environmental improvements can be made, given the willingness of the authorities to take action. Hopefully, the Atkins Town Centre Study referred to by the Mayor which is due to take place in the next few weeks will take full account of this. Roy Angell Tetbury Civic Society

Tetbury Library “…how would it be if you came and had tea with me?” Mr Tumnus from ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis You are invited to enter Narnia via Tetbury Library doors - to meander past snowy trees and have tea in Mr Tumnus’ house! Once you are nicely full of ‘buttered toast’ and ‘sugar topped cake’ then you can make an amazing snowflake to hang up in the snowy forest. We will be running the free drop-in craft activities throughout December and each week there will be a different type of snowflake to make – from salt-crystal paintings to 3D structures. Everyone’s welcome!

From Monday the 4th of January you will be able to enter the ‘Up-cycle a Book Competition’. Choose an old, withdrawn library book, fill in the entry form with the fee (10p for Primary School children, 20p for Secondary School children and 50p for Adults) then take home your book and make it into something else! You can construct it into something functional or pure art just as long as it looks as if it was once a book. Return your creation to the library on or before Wednesday the 3rd of February for a chance to win a prize!

Many of our clubs will be taking a short break for Christmas: Baby Bounce and Rhyme will be enjoying Christmas songs and making special foot-print calendars on the 16thof this month, then resuming on the 30th of December. The final opportunity for Grandmasters at Chess Club this year will be on the 19th of December, recommencing on the 8th of January. The last Library Club of 2015 is on the 18th of December and includes some festive nibbles!

“The Cuckoo’s Calling,” by Robert Galbraith Cormoran Strike is a private detective, down on his luck with personal problems – nothing new there you might think. But Strike is not a run of the mill, one-dimensional character. He is the illegitimate son of a famous rock star, his mother was a new-age hippy, and he won a place at Oxford to read English, but left to join the army, serving in the military

Bookworm

police. Wounded in Afghanistan he has returned to the UK and started a new life as an investigator using his contacts in the civilian police. You might think Strike’s history was sufficient for a book in itself, but The Cuckoo’s Calling follows his attempts to find out what really happened the night that Lulu Landry, a famous model, fell to her death from her balcony.

and their motives gradually unveiled so the book holds your attention and gathers pace to the end, where the outcome is finally revealed - even if the hero’s powers of deduction, based mostly on intuition rather than hard evidence, seem to verge on the psychic at times.

Writing as Robert Galbraith, this is JK Rowling’s first novel for adults and it grabs your interest from the start. Urged by Lulu’s brother, Strike and his secretary Robin delve into the young woman’s background and the world of fashion, to try and discover if this really was suicide or something more sinister.

The Chelworth Bookworms enjoyed the book as their summer read and would recommend it to everyone, even those who would not normally pick up a crime thriller. Well done to JK Rowling – there is life after Harry Potter!

Avening Primary School …..it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Play scripts have been handed out, parts given - and the sound of singing has been seeping out from under classroom doors and echoing around the corridors. The countdown has begun for this year’s Christmas Productions. Held in the last two weeks of term, the productions this year are The Christmas Café (KS1) and Shakespeare Rocks (KS2). The children are already bursting with excitement and rehearsals are well under way. Another performance the children are looking forward to this month is this year’s pantomime trip to see Sleeping Beauty at the Bristol Old Vic. Last month’s Halloween disco organised by FOAS was a roaring success with a wonderful turn out of witches and vampires and all things ghoulish dancing the evening away to a fantastic array of spooky tunes. The weather may have been gloomy recently, but nothing dampens the spirits of our football and tag rugby players who have been taking part in in tournaments over the past few weeks and representing the school brilliantly with their enthusiasm, fantastic attitudes and skill. Forest School lessons continue right up until the last week of term. These have been such a rewarding addition to the school timetable and have ignited within the children an enthusiasm for being out of doors no matter the weather; building, whittling, creating and exploring. As this term draws to an end, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us throughout 2015 whether you have attended one of our FOAS events, helped out at school or even just read our articles. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and look forward to reporting again in the New Year. Best wishes for 2016 on behalf of all at Avening School.

Bonfires At three sessions in early November, including on the fifth, we had bonfires at different locations in the Cotswolds. One was particularly difficult to get going, due to everything being so damp from the rain. This was on the bridleway (a former Roman Road) from Chavenage Green towards Beverstone. We cleared a section of the route here, removing overhanging trees and scrub in the corner of two fields for burning. We installed fencing along the boundary between a stile and a gate, both of which we had installed in earlier sessions a couple of months ago. We also tidied up a length of dry stone wall which was in disrepair.

we have been clearing scrub to return substantial areas to pasture land. This opens up the views and, incidentally, allows the National Trust to claim agricultural grants for these areas.

Newark Park We have also been assisting the National Trust at Newark Park. This is an old hunting lodge, with magnificent views from the gardens and grounds. Here the task was to erect post-and-rail wooden fancing alongside a steep path going down from the house towards the lake. This path has been closed for some time for safety reasons, but will be re-opened when our fences is complete.

The other two bonfires were on National Trust land, on Rodborough Common and in Woodchester Park. At both these locations

“I Sing Pop” As a school we are very fortunate to be so well supported by our local community. When the opportunity arose for the children to participate in the “I Sing Pop” initiative we approached St. Marys’ Church and asked for their support in raising the

funds to enable us to do this. They were very supportive and raised £400 through their second Sunday fundraiser to pay for the children to take part. The children learnt an amazing set of specially written pop songs with a Christian message, recorded a CD - and then performed a fantastic concert in the

St Mary’s CE VA Primary School church which all the parents and members of the community came to watch. As one member of our community wrote: ‘Thank you for filling St Mary’s Church with such joy – all those marvellous messages which you sang so splendidly with those amazing actions. I shall never forget “I Sing Pop” and I don’t think you will either.’ We would like to thank everyone at St. Mary’s Church for raising the money to enable us to do this and for being so accommodating in the Church. It was brilliant! We also continue to be well supported by the Feoffees, who have recently given us a very generous donation towards our IT development. We are now looking forward to an exciting end to the term and the year. We will be performing at the Tetbury Lights Switch on and perhaps singing a song from our concert. Our youngest children will be putting on a production of ‘Straw and Order’ (!) for Christmas and we have an art project planned and a visiting author. All in one month! Happy Christmas everyone and best wishes and thanks from everyone at St. Mary’s CE VA Primary School. Mrs Jo Woolley, Headteacher

Leighterton Primary School Our Class 4 children have been learning to write persuasive letters this month‌ ‌and found out about keeping wild animals to perform in circuses. They used newspaper articles, books and the internet to carry out research before they drafted letters to David Cameron. Purple polishing pens were used by the children to edit and up level these letters before they were word processed ready to send to number 10. We were all absolutely delighted when a white envelope, with the 10 Downing Street address was delivered to Leighterton Primary School. The delight built as the letter made its way to the classroom and the children sat in excited anticipation as they opened it. One of the correspondence officers had replied on behalf of the Prime Minister saying how much David Cameron had appreciated the letters and that they were going to be forwarded to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

whole school workshops and assemblies about this and have learned about how to stay safe in the online world too. Our PTFA work very hard to raise funds to buy extras for the children. Already this term they have run a school disco and a clothes sale, both of which have been great social occasions too. Many shoe boxes have been kindly donated by our children and their families to support children who are less fortunate than us. This was organised by our School Council. Our Governors have been working together to formulate plans for the next few years at

Leighterton and we have a very exciting time ahead of us. The governing body has a vital role to play in making sure that every child receives the best possible education. This is achieved by ensuring that governors have the skills and commitment to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school and work together as part of a team. We have a vacancy on our governing body and if you are interested in finding out more information, then please contact Mrs Harris in our school office on (01666) 890273. Merry Christmas! Meryl Hatfield Headteacher

This week Class 4 received a reply from DEFRA, thanking them for taking the time to write to them to persuade them to protect wild animals from having to perform in circuses. It stated that the Government were committed to introducing a bill when parliamentary time allowed and explained that it would help to protect the wild animals that are currently performing in travelling circuses. The children were able to see that by writing letters, they could persuade more influential people to understand their views and put them forward for them. Anti-bullying week takes place each year and at Leighterton everyone has been learning about what bullying is and what to do if we think that either our self or one of our friends is being bullied. The bonus for us is that we are able to support these great local people and provide our guests with authentic food that is fresh, top quality, and speaks volumes for itself. We thank our back and front-of-house staffs, who have worked so hard throughout a very busy year and festive season. Sir William Romney’s School

Tebury mayor Sandra Ball, with Jack Thorn and Madeleine Wardle

Girl power at SWR’s computing club! A computing club for girls has been launched at Sir William Romney’s School. Focusing on 14-19 year-olds of all abilities, FutureTechGirls aims to get them interested in careers involving technology – with girls teaching other girls.

SWR students enter the Dragons’ Den and win Council Cash

I am flabbergasted and can’t wait to implement our plan.”

In a bid to win a £500 cheque from the local council, pupils from Sir William Romney’s School in Tetbury recently pitched ideas – ranging from vending machines and drama equipment to 3D printers to music recording equipment – in a Dragons’ Denstyle event.

“I’ve created the club as a result of completing the dissertation for my M.Ed where I looked at why there was a lack of female students taking IT at GCSE level,” said ICT curriculum coordinator Matthew Duke. “One of the recommendations of the dissertation was to launch a club aimed just at girls. I don’t know of any other local school running such a club.” FutureTechGirls Club will be run by Year 8 Hattie Nixon who comments: “It is good to give girls the opportunity to learn new skills in what is often seen as a boys-only topic.”

Tetbury town councillors Sandra Ball (Mayor), Dr Tony Walsh (Deputy Mayor), Stephen Hirst and council administrator Tara Niblett played the role of ‘Dragons’ while twelve groups from all years made presentations, trying to persuade them to give the allocated £500 kindly donated by the council. In the end, Year 7’s Jack Thorn, Madeleine Wardle and Stella Streetman won the prize for their idea, ‘Make A Movie Day’ and will be able to purchase new cameras and equipment. Jack commented: “I had no clue our group would win. I thought there were so many good ideas that we didn’t stand a chance.

Sandra Ball was so impressed by the idea for new drama equipment by Year 7’s Sophia Hines, Nell Grant Evans, Matilda Simonin and Layla Jordan that she promised she would donate money from her own Mayoral Fund. Dr Walsh added that the council would also help find funding for other ideas, including the music recording equipment. “A huge thanks to the council for donating the £500,” said Year 8 Learning Manager Donna Findlay, who helped organise the event. “It was so kind of them and a fantastic experience and opportunity for the pupils to get something they feel will benefit them. “They presented their ideas with confidence and I felt very proud of them all. Jack was in shock when he won and his face was a picture! What is even better is that the councillors spoke to all students and said they could help point them in the direction of funding for their projects – so everyone was a winner.” Sir William Romney’s School

Dolphins Dramatic Society Doesn’t time fly when you’re enjoying yourself? This production seems to have flashed past. The set has been taken down, the bus has gone back to the depot, the costumes are back in the cupboard and the actors are all feeling a bit lost! The Society really needs to say a huge thank you to Anne Smith and Jenny Miles who have worked tirelessly on the production of `Summer Holiday.’ They have, as always, put their hearts and souls into it. Anne works out everything and as Jacky Bray said, “Anne seems to be able to look at something and say “Yes, that will work”, or “No, cut that out.” She spends hours painting the set and making things, too. Anne and Jenny go to Cotswold Costumes and choose all the outfits, they make a personal list for each actor so all the actor has to do is go and try them on. If Anne and Jenny can’t find what they want, they make it. Unfortunately none of the costumes chosen for Stella fitted, but the resourceful Janet Grzyb stepped in and loaned a wonderful selection including shoes and jewellery, thank you Janet. There are many other people The Dolphins need to thank because without them we really wouldn’t be able to put on a production. They are as follows:

From top left: Ian Smith as Jerry, Terri White as Stella, Victoria Palmer as Don and Fay Warner as Barbara have either gone on to University or to very demanding jobs and this, coupled with the shortage of men, limits the choice of plays we can stage. If you would like to join the drama group please do call Anne Smith on: 07887 377139. The next production is ‘The Odd Couple’

It was appropriate that the second half of the HOTS meeting on 5th November should be a truly historic entertainment. We were given the kind of picture show that a Victorian or Edwardian audience would have enjoyed - a Magic Lantern show. Its hey-day was before 1914.

Patrick Furley laid out for us to see his extensive collection of Magic Lantern and early Gramophone equipment. There was a large brass horn on the top of the wooden cased gramophone that certainly caught the eye. The equipment would have been expensive when it was first available so it would have been only the more prosperous people who would have enjoyed a picture show. However, his display included two drawings of men who carried their equipment on their backs and

Housekeeper / Nanny Required We are looking for a reliable and responsible person. We are a professional couple with three young children (5,3 & 6 months). Would ideally suit a mother/granny who enjoys looking after a family & home.

History of Tetbury Society obviously would set up their itinerant show for a village audience The ‘slide’ used for the Magic Lantern is two 3-inch square pieces of glass with the picture inside the ‘sandwich’. Early images were drawn, sometimes in colour, but by 1840 photographic images were used. Slides could be bought or hired and were often produced in ‘sets’ so that the images told a story or showed a series of a location. Humorous slides were much enjoyed, especially those where part of the image could be changed by the projectionist. Patrick’s display included a picture of a fountain that appeared to shimmer when part of the slide was quickly rotated.

Duties will include general house work, ironing, school runs and basic cooking. Occasional weekend help would be useful but not essential. Ideally Mon to Fri, 8 - 2pm, but some flexibility available.

Some were much older that others and there were humorous sets well as slides advertising historic products. He had promised to show slides of the Gloucestershire towns and villages and he had found three of Tetbury in his collection. One showed the Market House with cars parked either side of the steps and we thought that photograph must have been taken about 1930. Another of the side of the Market House showed the front of the White Heart. The third was on the corner of Long Street/ New Church Street. Really observant locals also noticed the Royal Oak but he had located that image to Whiteshill. That concluded a most enjoyable evening. Our December meeting is our social which is a Members-only occasion. We will then have an open meeting on Thursday January 7th at 7.30pm in Christ Church for an ‘Archive Presentation’ to which members are asked to bring any items of Tetbury interest. Kathleen Wells has been our Archivist for a number of years and has done a really great job to set up our website, so that many of our records can be accessed on line. Unfortunately she will be unable to continue, so the Society needs to find somebody with IT experience who would be willing to take on the task of recording archive material onto the HOTS website. Please get in touch with Jane Haines (504196) if you can help. Alan Twelvetree History of Tetbury Society

Tetbury WI It wouldn’t be Christmas without Hobbs House Bakery

In November, we held our monthly business meeting as normal and this was followed by our Annual Meeting. Two of our members described their visits when groups went to the mosque in Gloucester and the synagogue in Cheltenham. In contrast, another visit was to McCarthy and Stone in Tetbury. Here, afternoon tea was provided, along with a tour. We also had annual updates from all our groups. These are established for our members so that we can get together in smaller groups. Our Annual Meeting consists of reports from Treasurer, Secretary and President along with the election of next year’s committee. This was followed by a Beetle Drive so the evening was a very sociable one despite the formalities. This has been a very enjoyable year for us. We have celebrated the WI Centenary - especially our exhibition based on our own personal contributions - along with all the usual social events and speakers. I congratulate all those members who made such important contributions to the success of these projects. This is also a good opportunity to congratulate Tetbury Lions on their Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service which they received this year and to wish them continuing success in 2016.These good wishes for Christmas and the New Year go to everyone in Tetbury from us all. We shall be at the Dolphins Hall on December 14th for our Christmas meeting. Chris Gibson Tetbury WI

Tetbury Rail Lands Trust Sue Stoner, our late secretary… …and one of the inaugural members of the Rail Lands Regeneration Trust, one day made the suggestion that we should produce a fundraising calendar for our Goods Shed. Naturally we all began to feel a little nervous wondering what she might have in mind, but she went on to describe the historic fashion shoot that Norman Parkinson undertook in Tetbury in 1942. We could follow in his footsteps, she thought, setting up all the shots against the backdrop of our historic Goods Shed using wartime props and clothes to emulate his style. So another idea was born and Brecon and Karen Quaddy (who freely provide us with all our expert graphic design work) offered to produce it in collaboration with Jessica Mallincrodt.

Strangely enough it was around this time that our “super persuasive” mathematician member, John Andrews, bumped into Colin Peacock,(a superb professional photographer) whilst walking his flatcoat retriever “Flint” in Preston Park. John asked Colin and his wife if they’d like to get involved with the calendar and they generously agreed to do all the photography for nothing and the local businesses included in the calendar each commissioned their own pages, so we are in the fortunate position of being at breakeven point from the sale of our very first copy. Months of intensive hard work by Karen, Brecon, Jessica, Colin and our generous traders culminated in a sparkling Launch Night on the evening of the 30th October. We celebrated with canapes and wine and raised about £1,000 on the opening night. We included a smiling photo of Sue, our muse, at the evening - knowing how delighted she would have been with the 2016 Goods Shed Calendar. We would love

to sell every copy and will be in the slip road by the Market House every Saturday in the hope of achieving this target. Last but by no means least we would like to thank the Tetbury Advertiser for surprising us by putting our cover shot on the front of last month’s edition! November’s Car Boot sale was well attended and raised around £200 for our funds but Jill Dodge soon eclipsed this by taking £1,000 at her storming Bring and Buy Sale when she turned her bungalow into a Christmas Aladdin’s Cave. Well done Jill, David and her team of helpers. Jill would like to thank Tesco’s for their £10 voucher, Mayners, for donating a blow dry, and Lyndsey’s for donating two £5 vouchers. Jill set herself the target of £1,000 but no one thought she could make it. Amazing work everyone! We had a very good meeting with Clare Welsh the Events Manager from New Brewery Arts in Cirencester last week and she suggested we hold joint events in the future. If you would like to get involved please ring me on 01666502877 or go to our website www. tetburyraillands.com. Thank you all for your continued support. Tetbury Model Railway Club How time flies! The Tetbury Model Railway Club is already approaching its 3rd anniversary and the clubroom is bursting at the seams. The first junior layout has practically reached completion and has been instrumental in the development of our junior members’ skills; they are now turning their attention to working with a couple of the more senior members to produce a small industrial shunting layout to exhibition standards. This will be themed on “British Railways in the 1950’s” - representing the era of the transition from steam to diesel motive power. In particular, one of the junior members will take on responsibility for the planning and installation of lights and electronic controls within the industrial buildings. Our large exhibition layout, St Petroc, continues to develop and expand. The majority of the benchwork, track and wiring have been installed. Attention is now turning to the structural and scenic aspects of the layout and, if you visited our marquee at the Classic Car Show in September, you may have seen a corner module with the viaduct, hills and a stream under construction.

A couple of members have been further updating “Kleaver Hill” the compact N-scale GWR themed layout and the results will hopefully be displayed in the Tetbury Tailor’s shop window over Christmas.

Our mini-exhibition at the Classic Car Show attracted many visitors and we were amazed at how many people mentioned their interest in railway modelling. Many stories were re-counted of time spent in sheds and attics “playing trains”(!) and we gained a couple of new members as a result.

Puddle Ducks

this term talking about fireworks, colours, shapes and numbers. Phew.

We at Puddle Ducks begin to get very excited at this time of year! The room takes on an extra sparkle as the giant tubs of glitter are found and if you walk past our room at the right time of day, you will hear the wonderful sound of the children practising their songs and carols for our Christmas concert. We are feeling festive! 2015 has been such a busy year. In the weeks since the October half term we have been learning all about light and dark and nocturnal animals and we are looking forward to a visit from our local Help A Hedgehog hospital, hopefully with a special spiky friend. We are very grateful to them for taking the time to come and talk to the children about hedgehogs and what we can do to help them. On the 11th November we listened out for the loud bang to mark the start of the two minutes of silence for remembrance. The children and staff were all curious as to what made the bang, so we sent Claire out with the iPad to see what it was. It was not a canon after all as we had thought, but a large firework! We looked at the celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights and the start of the Hindu New Year and have also spent some time

Now we begin to look at winter and Christmas, where we will be sure to produce some decorations that will undoubtedly become family treasures to be brought out each year as well as lots of cooking, games and of course singing. The aforementioned Christmas concert this year will take place on the 15th December when the children will perform a variety of classic carols and

a couple of new favourites too. It is always a real highlight of our calendar and every year we are amazed and proud of what the children achieve. We will also keep our fingers crossed that a Very Important Person might be able to squeeze in a visit to us during his very busy schedule at this time of year. We have all been very good! Our pre-school runs from 9.15am – 12.15pm weekday mornings, term-time only with an optional lunch club until 1.15pm for children aged between 2½ and school entry. If you are interested in your child joining us, please contact Catherine Chidley on 01666 504278 who would be pleased to arrange for you to visit during a session. Puddle Ducks will close our doors for 2015 on 18th December for the Christmas break and will be back on Tuesday 5th January. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all the children and families who have given us their support over the course of the year and to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year – we look forward to seeing you in 2016! St Mary’s Playgroup Glitter Galore! The nights are drawing in and it’s getting colder outside but our craft cupboards have been ablaze with fireworks, Diwali and Christmas lights. You may also have seen our new “green jumpers” popping up around town With our new logo in place. Activities and snacks have been largely seasonal with colour film painting, clay pots with tea lights in and hot chocolate and hot dogs to help set the mood. The children have enjoyed learning about fire safety with the bonfire including the use of emergency vehicles in their small world play. The children have also visited St. Saviour’s church to look at the Poppies.

which can be uploaded for parents to see instantly. Parent are e-mailed each time an observation is uploaded and they are able to make comments. We are also hoping that this will improve the free flow of communication between playgroup and home, giving parents the chance to upload home activities too. If you are interested in our on-line approach and would like to know more we would welcome you to get in touch or visit us. Our popular toddler group will continue every Monday morning from 9.39-11.30 and is run by one of our lovely mums Jackie Hunt. Jackie is also one of our playgroup assistants

and her familiar face for the children who come up to us from the toddler sessions help them settle quickly. We always have a seasonal craft activity during the session and there are always plenty of toys and games for all ages and abilities. Everyone is welcome, from babies to pre-schoolers, so drop in and join the fun. Please visit our new website www. stmarysplaygrouptetbury.co.uk or call 01666 503777 to learn more about us or with any enquiries, we are always happy to hear from you. Vikki Morris, Playgroup Committee Secretary

We are now starting to think about Christmas and the glitter is already making its presence known. There will be lots of craft activities including decorations for the children to sell. This term has seen the introduction of a new assessment format with an on-line system called Tapestry. This has been made possible by the fundraising efforts of all involved and a successful 40th birthday party which has meant that we could purchase 3 iPad minis for staff to use - thank you. These iPads are used daily to capture videos and pictures of the children engaged in learning activities

Due to timing of our theatre visits and the publication date of the Advertiser, this article refers mainly to future events rather than past visits. The November issue of the Advertiser carried our report on the October trip to Sonning (Mill Theatre); our November trip is planned for Saturday the 28th when fifty-four members have booked to visit the special Christmas attraction at Longleat - the “Festival of Light.” While there, we will also include visits to the Adventure Park and the House. Here’s hoping the weather will be kind to us as we have a long day! Read all about it in the next issue.

Following on with future plans, we are going to an evening musical concert at Gloucester Cathedral on Thursday December the 10th with thirty three members booked to attend - and in the New Year we have our Annual General Meeting at 7.00pm on Friday, January the 29th. Please make a note of this and try to attend, as it is very helpful for the committee to get feedback from members to improve the quality and attraction of events. On Wednesday February the 3rd fortyfour members have booked to visit the Hippodrome, Bristol, to see “The Last Tango” featuring the Strictly Come Dancing stars Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace. Due to all the Christmas and New year festivities those members who booked

Save ‘n’ Borrow money is helping others who may need to take out a loan.

Yes, Save ‘n’ Borrow Credit Union has come to Tetbury, opening on the 5th of November at The Town Council Offices at the bottom of Long Street! It will open every Thursday between 2 – 4 pm. (except Christmas Eve when the Council Offices are closed. Save ‘n’ Borrow provides ethical finance for those who either live, work or go to school in Tetbury. Come to support the venture by making a one off payment of £2 to become a member. You will need to bring with you photo identity – either passport, driving licence or similar - a utility bill to prove where you live and also your National Insurance Number. These are stipulations laid down by the Financial Conduct Authority which regulates Save ‘n’ Borrow. Once a member, you can make payments into your account, hopefully on a regular basis, and receive annual dividends for doing so. Some people, who may not want to save regularly but who want to support this venture, become members and then just make a one off payment into their account in the knowledge that their money is safe and that they can withdraw it by giving a week’s notice and that their

Loans are made responsibly at a very low rate of interest - lower than high street banks and much, much lower than pay day lenders and other high street money shops. This can be done because it is a community venture run by volunteers who are there to provide a service - not to make a profit. It is also possible because Tetbury Council is letting us use their premises free of charge and Tetbury Lions gave us a £500 grant for set-up costs. Without this help it is doubtful whether we would have got off the ground and we are extremely grateful. Should members request help with managing their money then volunteers specially trained in this field are available to help.

Please do not get the impression that Save ‘n’ Borrow is being run by a group of unprofessional, untrained, gossiping dogooders as nothing could be further from the truth! All volunteer cashiers are reliable, fully trained and bound by confidentiality rules. Save ‘n’ Borrow is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, is regularly audited and savings are guaranteed by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, so your money is very safe. It is strongly promoted and supported by the Diocese of Gloucester and by Churches Together in Tetbury (TACT). Points West is making a programme on Credit Unions - and Tetbury, the latest branch to set up, will be featured! For further information contact: alison. hesketh1@btinternet.com 01666 505113

NEWS FROM TETBURY TOWN COUNCIL Winter Gritting Policy Gloucestershire County Council Highways Department has overall responsibility for gritting all roads. Tetbury Town Council (TTC) operates a winter gritting programme of footpaths to enable residents to move about the town centre in a safe manner. During adverse winter weather Gloucestershire Highways (GH) resources are focused on keeping the strategic carriageway network running, with priority being given to bus routes, schools, and routes with emergency services such as hospitals, doctors, fire and ambulance. During the winter months TTC is committed to prioritise staff resources to compliment the activity provided by GH in gritting footways, refilling grit bins and where possible to clear snow from pavements in pedestrian areas. TTC will spread grit and salt on the pavements in the following priority areas: Long Street, Church Street, Chipping Street and the Market Place, Silver Street, Fox Hill and the route to Tetbury Hospital, Old Brewery Lane as this is the route to the two public Car Parks, The Ferns as this is the route to the Doctors Surgery, London Road through to St Mary’s Road, St Mary’s Primary School, Love Lane Note: Other areas on above map will be done as resources allow. TTC will provide piles of grit on request in other areas where safety is of concern. The grit bins are provided for pavements and dangerous road junctions or very steep slopes; they are NOT to be used for personal driveways. Should time allow TTC will also assist Traders in Long Street, Church Street, Chipping Street and the Market Place to clear ice from the pavements whenever possible.

STREET CLEANING CDC has allocated £2,000 per ward member to provide extra street cleansing and environmental activities. If you know: • Any areas in Tetbury that need extra attention? • Or are you holding an event that would require the streets to be cleaned the next day? • Or do you live in a road which needs the road sweeper to remove debris in the gutters? If you can answer yes to any of these questions please contact the town council 504670. A paid-for feature

NEWS ON THE GOODS SHED REFURBISHMENT I am pleased to announce that at the meeting of full council on 16th November 2015 Tetbury Town Council (TTC) unanimously agreed to pledge further support and funding to the Goods Shed refurbishment. The Goods Shed and surrounding land is owned by TTC and we have spent some time agreeing the way forward with this valuable community asset. In partnership with the Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust (TRLRT) we have been working hard to secure the best project for the building and we will be commencing the refurbishment in early 2016. The plans for refurbishment have altered considerably over the years but with the support of TRLRT who will run the building for the community once completed we have agreed a small extension to the south elevation of the building which will house the toilets, store and kitchen leaving the main area to provide a multi-use facility. Working closely with our architects Clarke and Maslin the plans were approved by Cotswold District Council in October and the works will commence ASAP. The funding of the project is made up of grant funding raised by both TRLRT and TTC, S106 contributions (donated by new developers), TTC free reserves and a Public Works Loan taken out by the council. The council feel that it is the right time to invest and move this project forward which will result in a community asset worth in excess of £1.5 million. The building will meet the needs of a growing Tetbury providing an excellent venue to host new and exciting events. If you would like to learn more please visit our website at tetbury.gov.uk or tetburyraillands.com or pop in to the council offices. Natalie Haines, Town Clerk
