Young by Name Golden Slumbers “If 60 is the new 40” – my spirits lift as I read the start of this meme on Facebook, only to fall at its ending: – “then 9.00 pm is the new midnight.” Sensitive to the approach of a Big Birthday next year, I reluctantly agree. Once an ardent burner of midnight oil and two-ended candles, the older I get, the earlier my bedtime. Not so for the rest of my household; we operate on three different time zones.
Sleepers My teenage daughter follows the classic morning-sloth-cum-party-animal schedule. My husband, long free of nine-to-five commitments, stays up so late and sleeps in so long you’d think he was working nights. One warm, dry night in May, I was surprised by the sound of a lawnmower starting up after nightfall. Yes, he was cutting the grass in the dark. A few nights later, at midnight he leapt up from his seat in the kitchen, rubbed his hands together enthusiastically, and announced, “Right, back to work in the garden!” Gardeners’ lore states that potatoes should be planted by the light of a full moon, but he’s not growing potatoes. Still, who needs daylight when you have a headtorch? Longing for my bed by 9.00 pm, I’m first up every morning, yet I’m often awake for an hour or two half-way through the night. Does that make me insomniac? 681010 March Roofing:Layout 1
Wakers Apparently not. It turns out my twostage sleep has historical precedence. According to Roger Ekirch, author of “At Day’s Close: Night in Times Past,” this was how everyone slept until artificial lighting skewed our body clocks, encouraging us to pursue a single shift of seamless slumber. Not only did our forbears to go to bed at dusk and wake at dawn, they also got up in the middle of the night and were active for an hour or so. Many cultures and languages, including Homer’s “Odyssey,” Virgil’s “Aeneid,” and Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales,” refer to “first sleep” (dusk till around midnight,) and “second sleep” (early hours till dawn) as if they are the norm. While to

twenty-first century ears it sounds absurd for monks to celebrate Matins at 2.00 am, to the average medieval person it was a constructive use of standard waking hours.
What you will Those without holy orders could do what they liked between sleep stages. Activities that didn’t require illumination would be more practical - and no, not only what you’re thinking: 2.00 am was also prime time for theft. Me, I favour a cup of tea and a biscuit, with a few chapters of a good book.

So now when I wake at 3.00 am I do so happily, knowing I’m simply following a classic habit enjoyed by our ancestors until relatively recently. Until I stumble across a YouTube interview with Roger Ekirch describing two-stage sleepers as “not insomniac, but pre-industrial”. Doesn’t that make me one removed from antediluvian? Now I really do feel old.

Lion’s Den Services, who we managed to aid with a one-off fillip for their excellent work, Lions International “Sight Aid” and “Water Aid” programme donations and Tetbury Girlguides – assistance with their books. Still with me? If you’re not actually seeing stars yet, please attempt to read that in the last twelve months we’ve also:
Succession is of course completely immediate. I suspect that it probably travels even faster than light speed. The ‘power to rule’ must instantaneously pass from one individual to another at a truly immeasurable rate, no? Voilà! A new King! Ah, but Lion Presidency doesn’t work that way… As regular readers will undoubtedly recall, Lion President Bill Walsh took his leave of us in last month’s Lion’s Den column, having hugely improved our modest club during his upbeat tenure. And after formal handover, Lion Tony Sykes will soon assume the mantle of Tetbury Lion’s Presidency once more, no doubt then to lead us onward and upward toward even better and brighter things. Who could doubt it?

Meantime, I find there’s a hole here on page five. As your editor I’m honour-bound to try and help, of course! Flicking through some of the piles of Tetbury Advertiser back copies I’m inevitably surrounded by, why don’t I fill you in on some of the high points from Lion Bill’s year of Presidency? I shall. With your funds, encouragement and assistance, together we’ve managed to help support, in no particular order – please take a giant breath before you attempt this run-on sentence – the following: Tetbury Bowls Club in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Tetbury Playgroup who we’ve helped with their ongoing essential refurbishments, Tetbury Fiesta (this year renamed to “Tetfest”) to whom we’ve given financial support, Tetbury Food Bank, now a “regular” cause, Gloucestershire Fire
Phew! Not a bad year’s worth, really.
An annual payment of £13 buys you into the Lions 200 Club lottery. We use these subscriptions to help local causes – and you get the chance to win a cash prize! Application forms can be obtained from Malcolm at Tetbury Hardware. Each quarter, the Tetbury Lions 200 Club makes a special prize payment of £100. This quarter the prize goes to Jackie Cleaver. This month’s £20 prizes were won by Kevin Farnham, Mel Maslin. R H Henson and Malc Philby! Many congratulations to them from everyone in the 200 Club. Lion Gail North

Being part of Tetbury Lion’s isn’t all about being able to gather your donations to distribute as grant money of course although that really is great fun - it’s about fellowship, socialising, and the “We Serve” things we also do, like supporting town parades, marshalling the Rotary Firework Night, doing litter picks and raffles, and being involved in many other events. Good fun! Yes, we are a flourishing club, but we are always very happy to welcome new members. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at the Priory Inn at 8.00 pm, so if you feel you’d like to contribute to our activities, or if you would just like to see how rowdy we can get, please come and join us. Would you like to help distribute the Advertiser, perhaps? It’ll get you out in the fresh air! Lion Richard Smith, Editor and stand-in.

Dolphin’s Hall In early June we held our AGM. Thank you to everyone who came! The public asked some excellent questions and also offered some welcome encouragement. Overall the meeting was very positive and made the trustees feel that their efforts were both appreciated and supported.
Hopefully, you have noticed we now have new picnic tables on the recreation ground. These are designed to be incredibly robust and should last us for many years to come. Thank you to Tetbury Town Council who funded the tables for us. Very soon, the children’s playground on the rec will get a much-needed clean and fresh coat of paint. We have also secured a grant for £2,500, which will be used to purchase a new piece of equipment for the playground.
The AGM is also where six resident trustees are elected to serve on the committee for the next year. This year six people came forward, so no election was required and all six were appointed unopposed. The six resident trustees are Alex Ball, Sue Brown, Jon Easterbrook, Paul Jones, Jamie Ponting and Steve Scott (Scotty). At the first trustees meeting later in June the hall and Memorial Recreation Ground user groups were able to each nominate a trustee. At the first meeting, the chair was elected, and the trustees each chose which committees they wished to join. With all that done, the trustees can now get back to running the hall, the recreation ground and pushing ahead with the redevelopment project. Of course, as I write this, the meeting has not yet taken place, so I am hoping it goes as it is supposed to - so that this is all factually correct!
We will hopefully get this done in time to be enjoyed over the summer holidays. The next edition of the Advertiser won’t be until September. By then we should have made a lot of progress with the redevelopment project. Keep an eye on our website for details of upcoming consultations and opportunities to have your say on the future of the Dolphins Hall. Steve Scott (Scotty,) Dolphins Hall Trustee

Girlguiding Guiding members are always up for a challenge, and our new Ambassador is no exception. Anna McNuff is an adventurer and she is certainly inspiring our girls to have a go. She has just started a 100-marathon run from Shetland to London – all whilst running barefoot! She will be passing through Gloucestershire in October and we are hoping that some of us will get to meet her. Meanwhile, the Rainbows had an evening without socks and shoes to find out what going barefoot would be like. They walked through tissue paper, cornflakes and sticky paint! They then thought of how to describe Anna and wrote it on a canvas postcard for us to send her. We posted a photo on Twitter as we weren’t sure where she would be on her marathon run…
as leaders and Guides helped serve teas at Hooks House Pottery during their open gardens event. We had some wonderful feedback on how great the girls were, and I’m pleased to say they enjoyed it too.
We had a chance to fulfil the service part of our programme over the May half term
Congratulations

We are getting used to the differences in routine and the “practice pieces” which begin each session - and we’re being kept on our toes with a new batch of songs to learn. Nicki is carrying on the tradition of the TCC, which is to have fun whilst still endeavouring to be the best that we can be in terms of musical ability. We hope to show the results of this at our next concert, which is still some way off, but meantime we will be helping to provide entertainment for the Holiday@Home event.
Exciting times! Tetbury Community Choir has flourished in the years since it was first formed, greatly increasing both in number and in ability. This is due in no small part to the leadership of Richard George, our previous and wellliked Director of Music. His was a tough act to follow, but our new choir leader, Nicki Atwell, is proving that she is up to the task. She is equally enthusiastic and has as much energy as the rest of the choir put together! We are looking forward to even more exciting prospects on the horizon.
This will be held at Christ Church in the Chipping on Thursday the 1st of July, and again on Friday the 2nd of July. This is a much-loved annual event organised through TACT, and it aims to provide a fun and entertaining day for all of those in Tetbury whose lives are restricted in some way, preventing them from being able to get away for holidays. This of course includes many of our Senior Citizens who have limited opportunities for a holiday break. It’s always a privilege to take part in an event for the benefit of our fellow Tetbury area residents. All of us at Tetbury Community Choir are looking forward to the rest of the summer term, and this latest phase of our ongoing involvement with - and love of – singing. Why not come and join us on the journey? We hold practice sessions at Christ Church in the Chipping on Monday evenings, beginning at 7.00 pm and finishing at 9.00 pm. The cost is
Tetbury Community Choir £5 per session, payable on the night, with the added benefit of the first two sessions being free, so do come along and try us out. We would love to see you! It was a great couple of days enjoyed by many. We’re already looking forward to returning next year! Dr Catherine Pullin
Last week saw a celebration of Science for many,
Auction night raises £2,200 A wonderful array of auction lots plus delicious cheese and wines proved a successful formula for the Social Spaces team last month.
as groups of students from SWR enjoyed two days at Cheltenham Science Festival.
Hosted in association with Vinotopia, the evening began with a wine and cheese tasting and quiz, at which the participants had their wine knowledge tested and their taste buds tickled. The wines went down exceptionally well, and the selection of cheeses and accompaniments meant everyone could move onto the next part of the evening feeling nicely replenished.
Students from Years 7 and 8 were treated to a ‘Ridiculously Rapid Reactions’ lecture demonstration in the Town Hall, and Year 9 and 10 students were inspired by some prominent scientists who shared their life stories and pathways to their chosen STEMbased* careers, typically in a very engaging and informative manner. ‘The most memorable talk was from Dr Ronx. I was really impressed to find out about how she started from such a hard background, and how she still managed to work her way up to become a doctor and a TV presenter.’ Y9 student Students were also given the opportunity to get hands on and explore many aspects of Science, by taking part in a variety of activities within The Discover Zone, the GCHQ Cyber Zone, the EDF Energy Zone and the GE Pavilion. ‘It was fun and interactive for everyone. Lots of competitions and challenges, like ‘Crack the Code’, ‘Escape the Room’, and ‘Banana Surgery’. We got lots of freebies too!’ Y7 student ‘I liked trying out the different activities.’ Y8 student 720310 ET Lumley:Layout 1

‘I enjoyed cracking a safe open in the Cyber Technology Zone most, because Jacob and I topped the leader board!’ Y9 student ‘I had an AMAZING day. I really liked eating the crickets!’ Y7 student ‘I enjoyed the Discover Zone where I got to model surgery by sticking a camera into the knee and using medical scissors to remove a bullet.’ Y9 student 20:37
Bidding was fast and furious as Stephen Hirst, ably assisted by Ed Riddington, offered up over twenty-five auction lots to the assembled guests, from spa breaks and beauty treatments to gym membership, car servicing, sporting events, days out, and even a pair of Ellie Harrison’s boots! The evening ended with £2,200 raised for the first phase of the project, to create the new alfresco communal area. Huge thanks must go to the many businesses and individuals who generously donated prizes, and to all who bought tickets and bid on auction lots. The monxey raised takes us on towards our fundraising target, but we still need to raise much more.

Cotswold Voluntary Wardens Badminton Plague Cottage The Wardens were recently asked to erect an explanatory notice board at the remains of the ‘Plague Cottage.’ This is now on the bridleway from the A46 to Badminton, where it crosses the Duke’s private grass airstrip, near the aircraft hangar. In the middle ages, ‘the Plague’ and ‘the Black Death’ were a major scourge in town and countryside alike, with the propensity to wipe out whole communities. In this location, which is still remote from any other habitation, people with the disease were brought to die in isolation, so as not to affect surrounding villages and hamlets.
Repeat Requests Every five years or so the Wardens need to return to maintain their previous work. One such job last month was at the recreation ground in Hawkesbury Upton, to clear and burn the intruding scrub and hedge-line growth on one edge of the field.

A fallen Willow tree across a footpath near Hawkesbury was cut up and removed, as it was obstructing a stile and the bridge across a stream – and a new Kissing Gate was installed to replace the stile onto the recently designated ‘Lantern Way’ footpath, from the road at Cam Green; another was installed at nearby Ashmead Green. Badminton Estate Badminton is home to the Duke of Beaufort, the Beaufort Hunt and the Badminton Horse Trials. A footpath runs across the deer park from the village of Badminton to the hamlet of Little Badminton, where there is a tiny church and a large and impressive Dovecote. The estate extends beyond the deer park to the villages of Luckington and Didmarton - and includes tenanted farms. The Wardens have worked at several of these, on footpath maintenance, hedge laying, coppicing and charcoal burning.

Ducal Transport Before the present day’s aircraft arrangements, Henry Adelbert Wellington FitzRoy Somerset, the 9th Duke of Beaufort agreed in 1902 that railway tracks could be laid across his land. His conditions were that a ‘Badminton Station’ would be built at Acton Turville, and that he could himself stop any eastbound express train, should he wish to travel to London. The station closed in the mid-1960’s, although the building is still in use and the line remains busy carrying express trains to the Severn Tunnel and to South Wales.

Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun gratification is not instant. The next chapter is delayed. In divorce proceedings, dealing with financial matters tends to fester. Historically, in matrimonial matters, I saw the issue of proceedings as a helpful act because ultimately there would be a relatively quick answer. Now we must go through protocols drafting the dreaded “Form E,” which is essentially a glorified tax return. The momentum is lost through delay - and if a solution is not found then you must go through the whole process again.
My friend Rupert was an articled clerk in a distinguished firm of solicitors in Lincoln’s Inn over 40 years ago. A customer came into the office, demanding to know the whereabouts of the litigation department. Rupert’s principal pointed east, saying “the lavatory is over there.” I am not sure if he was pointing to another firm of solicitors, which might have been mine
S
at the time, or to somewhere else in his own office building. For a young man earning his spurs, litigation can be fun, but forty years on I see it as my duty to seek a solution to a problem. Litigation, like war, means failure. Banks operating from their call centres often do not set out to solve problems, but resort to litigation because they have not thought through any other solution. Some seem to compete with their own departments - and failure to communicate means they again seek instant gratification through litigation. The trouble with litigation is that

I am very happy if I know my opposite number well, because this adds an element of trust, which aids settlement. The same applies in a property transaction. If you have a difficult problem and do not know the buyer’s representative while you are acting for the seller, you are more likely to hide behind the curtain of the rules rather than jointly to seek a solution. You may be acting for an intransigent buyer, who refuses to part with his cash on the completion date of the purchase because there is rubbish alleged to be on the site. What is rubbish? The buyer could lose the property and his deposit through his intransigence unless there is a way round the problem negotiated. A powerful estate agent can help, because he can talk to all the parties. He can be a mediator. Too often now we are left to negotiate terms that have been neglected by the agent. We can only talk to our opposite number - whereas the estate agent can find out what is troubling the parties and achieve a solution, rather just keep on ringing up the lawyers asking what is happening. Sometimes it helps when dealing with particularly intransigent people, to make the other party believe that he has “won” even if your own client has in fact obtained a good deal. Divorce is particularly difficult, because there are always other people who say that he or she “got a better deal.” Each case is different. That makes the job interesting and worthwhile. Tetbury in Bloom Having finished planting the town’s summer displays, our focus now is to keep them looking their best. Until September/October we’ll be working on a two-week maintenance rota, visiting each of the beds and containers every other week. For this purpose, we divide the town into four sections: 1) The ten troughs in Market Place and at the front of the Market Hall, the six tubs on the Chipping Steps, the trough in the Chipping Car Park and the one at the Chipping public toilets, the two beds and six tubs in London Road ‘gardens,’ opposite Combers Mead. Also, ‘Anniversary Gardens,’ which is in Eccles Court and which runs between The Ferns and The Chippings. 2) The frontage of Old Coombe House in New Church Street which we took on as a project in 2007 and have continued
The roundabout during Summer 2009 maintaining ever since, The front and side beds at The Dolphins Hall, the troughs at the gates of St Saviours church, the fire station bed, the Library, the ‘Twizzle’ bed, which is adjacent to the footpath that runs from the Library to Long Street, and the bed and small trough on The Knapp.

4) The bed at the entrance to the Priory Industrial Estate in London Road, the two beds at the Tesco filling station, the bed at Braybrooke Close and the large roundabout on London Road - which is actually composed of six very large beds.

In 2006, when we first planted the roundabout, there were no houses and almost no pedestrians needing to cross the London Road in that area. Thirteen years later the situation has changed dramatically. Crossing London Road by the roundabout, which at present is still in a 40 mph speed limit, is proving difficult for residents of the new housing estates, especially if crossing with children and pushchairs. Reducing the speed limit and improving the crossing will take time, but to improve visibility almost instantly during July, together with the Town Council ground staff we will be taking out all the large shrubs from the central area. We will then replant in a less dense fashion, making crossing the road a much easier task and giving the roundabout a new look. Sue Hirst, Team Leader, Tetbury in Bloom

Avening Primary School Copsegrove Farm, where they took part in a variety of outdoor activities ranging from den building to bug hunts. Sport always plays a big part in school life at Avening, but this term in particular has been bursting with physical activity. We have a lot of cricket events, with tournaments at Frocester Cricket Ground for KS2 children as well as a day trip to Cheltenham to watch Gloucestershire play Leicestershire. There have also been rounders warm up matches and then a tournament, and children who qualified from last month’s district sports meet have taken part in the area sports tournament, where children from local schools compete in a variety of events from ‘speed bounce’ to running races.
Here we are again! Another academic year has gone in a flash and now we are in our final weeks of term. This is always a wonderful time of year: a mixed bag of emotions as some children leave to start secondary school, other children move up to a new year group and we welcome our new reception children, who will join us during the move-through days in July. The children have been out and about a lot during this final term, with The Hawks
(y3/4) spending a day at The Cheltenham Science Festival, where they took part in an oil-slick clean-up workshop, among other exciting activities. On a similar theme, the Owls (y5/6) paid a visit to ‘We The Curious,’ (formerly known as @Bristol,) where they got to take part in hands-on experiments and activities which support their current term’s topic ‘We are the future.’ It is not just the KS2 children that have taken their learning outside of the school; the Kestrels (y1/2) spent a fabulous day at
Y6 have plenty still to do before they put on their leavers’ hoodies and say goodbye to Avening School. After completing their cycling proficiency test in the middle of June, dispersing to their respective schools for their inductions days and preparing for their leavers’ assembly at the end of term, the y6 children will put on a tea party for parents, staff and volunteers, attend their leavers’ disco with their y5 fellow Owls and enjoy their treat day at Cattle Country. That just leaves us to say thank you for reading our articles all year and supporting our school. We look forward to carrying on reporting in the new academic year! we will be entertained by the soprano, Elin Manahan Thomas, who sang at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Two members are going to London to take part in the Climate Change Lobby at Westminster at the end of June, taking advantage of the coach transport being provided by Glos. Federation. We hope they don’t get arrested! Gwyneth, our President, recently attended the National WI AGM in Bournemouth. It was a long day but the speakers, Lord Keith Bradley, Chair of ‘Care Not Custody Coalition,’ and Maggie Philbin, who started her TV career on Swap Shop, were very interesting. At this time of the year it always seems strange to be ordering our Christmas Carol Concert tickets for Cheltenham Town Hall. This year
Our Skittles team triumphed in their match against Tibberton and Taynton. The picture shows our Skittles Captain, Wendy, finding the pins! The third round will be played against Uley WI at the beginning of July. We are making the acquaintance of so many friendly WI ladies in our matches and each time our team members are different too, due to holidays and other commitments. It has been a very enjoyable season. Our June walk to Miserden was on a dry morning, although the dogs got wet due to a frolic in the lake! Lunch was taken at the Garden Centre and was voted a great success. In July we are visiting the grounds of Woodchester Mansion. We are looking forward to our evening at the Goods Shed hosted by Tetbury WI. After our wonderful talk about SS Great Britain we are hoping to arrange a follow up visit in September.

Longfield wrote to thank us for our donation in memory of our late friend, Eileen Ind. The funds had been raised at our Spring Village Quiz. The Village Fete on the 9th of June was as busy as usual and we served endless mugs of tea, cream teas and slices of cake all afternoon. Our members provide lovely cakes for the occasion. We have been discussing our contribution to the Centenary Craft Exhibition being held in Gloucester Cathedral in October. Sadly, we had to cancel our plans for a visit to the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens near Romsey. Many members were keen to go on the trip but not enough to make it worthwhile. We are hoping to visit a local garden instead. Visitors to our meeting are always welcome. Shirley Hand, Avening WI

‘The Immortalists,’ by Chloe Benjamin When four children sneak out of their apartment in New York to track down a fortune teller, none of them realise the impact the outing will have on their lives. Varya, aged thirteen, is the oldest of two sisters and two brothers. Simon, aged seven, is the youngest. The gypsy woman they find living on Hester Street has a very specific talent – she can predict the day of your death. Daniel and Klara are excited, Simon is just going along for the ride, but Varya is very apprehensive. On their return home, all four children are subdued, contemplating what they have been told. It is only nine years later, when they are reunited for their father’s funeral, that they talk warily about what happened that day. Simon, still only sixteen, just says
he was told he would die young, Varya was predicted to live into old age. What do you do with that information? Do you believe it and try and make the most of what time you have? Or do you reject it, and live your life in defiance? Does this amount to the same thing? Following the stories of each of the four siblings in turn, ‘The Immortalists’ also tracks the wider events that moulded the lives of those living in the USA over thirty years. Although each member of the family feels that they are acting independently, they are also tied to each other and to their common history. Gripping, with an underlying sense of dread, we progress through the book, wondering how each one will fare and what their ultimate fate will be. Ghilly Vincenti, Chelworth Bookworms

Tetbury Bowls Club
This is a short article as I’m so busy bowling these days! Our men made a good start in their League matches but results since have been up and down and our first Ladies League match was cancelled due to inclement weather. Top Club and Interclub are both under way, with teams playing both home and away. Although we’re still early in the season there have been more than usual matches rained off – we can’t play on a waterlogged green. Let’s hope things start to improve soon. Their commitment to running weekly Cub and Scout groups and in giving up many weekends (and more) for camps is amazing. The range of activities they organise and manage is breathtaking and even over the last year has included camping, hiking, firelighting, cooking, bowling, narrow boating, canoeing, survival skills and expeditions! Both Jean and Mike are very unassuming but work tirelessly for scouting - and are always there with the enthusiasm, smiles and sense of humour that is frequently required. So, it is my very great pleasure to nominate then both as ‘Unsung Heroes’ for this month. I hope you agree?

Many thanks as usual to Rob Goves of “Relish” for providing it. Rumours of the demise of the “Unsung Hero” feature are inaccurate – of course – so If there’s someone you know who repeatedly contributes selflessly to the wider community, then please do let me know - my details are on page three of the magazine. Sopworth Classic Car Show
David Sheppard Building Contractor
Until the late 1960’s and early 1970’s Britain had a strong car industry, with many UK companies producing cars that have since become classics of their era. Most of these companies have long since disappeared but, at least for those of us of a certain age, who can forget names such as Riley, Wolseley, Humber, Bristol, Sunbeam and Austin Healey? The cars they produced have disappeared in large numbers, but thanks to the efforts of many classic car enthusiasts, examples remain and are usually maintained to a higher standard today than they were when in regular use. Classic car shows offer an opportunity for these enthusiasts to show their cars - and for others to see them and talk to the owners. A car show can make a great day out for the whole family, particularly when combined with other attractions such as stalls offering a variety of produce and competitions for children as well as adults.

Additionally, a small army of volunteers delivered an envelope to every house in the area, inviting people to give toward bettering the maternity services in Sierra Leone, where currently one in ten mothers die in childbirth.
This year we did not go back to pick up the envelopes as we have in years past – we invited recipients to put a donation in their envelope and to hand it into the Post Office, Perry Bishop estate agents, or the King’s Arms at Didmarton. Eating Out Flaming June seeming doused and not yet having shown a flicker, there was only one thing to do – head off for lunch somewhere in search of some kind of cheer. It wasn’t the kind of day for a pleasant country drive, so we headed straight to The King’s Arms in Didmarton. It’d been a while since our last visit and it seemed the perfect opportunity to see how things were going. Its rather gloomy but tastefully decorated interior was as before and, while there were fewer specials than I might have expected, the quite small main menu was very appealing, with dishes like pea and broad bean tortellini, chicken breast with smoked sweetcorn puree and chard, medley of pork belly, cheek and tenderloin with BBQ beans, chorizo, apple and fennel and lamb rump with anchovy, pickled baby gem and hasselback potato.
The starters were somewhat plainer, though hot home-smoked salmon with pickled cucumber, wasabi, crème fraiche and tapioca crisp sounded lovely, as did Flossy’s Wye Valley asparagus with heritage radish, egg yolk and pea puree and the
SHB Window Cleaning
As this was a cheer-up treat, we decided to have desserts. Flossy went straight for one of her favourites – sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream - and I couldn’t resist mango crème brûlée with kaffir lime ice cream. Her steamed sponge was light but rich (and disappeared very quickly!) and the brûlée was creamy and deeply mango flavoured. The kaffir lime ice cream was completely new to me – ice cream with flavours from Thai cuisine? It was really something!
SHB uses the latest technology in reach and wash cleaning systems, offering an environmentally friendly, reliable and professional window cleaning service. We clean all windows, frames and sills leaving a spotless streak-free finish.
It has to be said that, with beer and a G&T, this wasn’t a cheap lunch and Flossy felt that, desserts aside, the portions weren’t very generous for the money, either. But, given that there’s a bar menu offering a handful of classics, too, there’s no need to break the bank to have a cracking meal here.
Our water-fed poles can reach up to 35 feet, enabling access to the highest of windows.

Flossy was a bit surprised that the asparagus was cold – so, basically a salad – and felt it was rather small, but it was very tasty. My terrine was very nice indeed: a good-sized portion of gently braised ham hock pressed with chicken, crunchy gherkins and lightly toasted sourdough, and the ‘cheddar custard’ was basically like a cream cheese but with a custard-y texture. I’d happily have made a meal out of a couple of portions! To follow, Flossy chose hake with cannellini beans, mushrooms and tenderstem from the specials and I picked aromatic poached plaice with crab ravioli (in squid ink pasta), buttered samphire and sea lettuce crisp, from the menu. Both pieces of fish were expertly cooked, the plaice being especially soft, and both dishes were well-conceived and very enjoyable. The combination of soft plaice, crab and samphire was delicious. There were a couple of very minor minus points, though: the broccoli was undercooked to Flossy’s mind, and my sea lettuce crisp wasn’t at all crisp – though it tasted wonderfully sea-salty!

History of Tetbury Society South Cerney- is where HOTS had their first visit of the summer on D-Day, June the 6th. We were met by Peter Jay who was to be our guide around this ’charming village’ (as the web site states,) and we were soon to discover that it is!
It has three manor houses, Atkyns, connected to Sir Stafford Cripps, The Manor House and another. At one time it had five pubs and five churches too. It now has only three pubs and several churches. All Hallows church yard has a Roman sarcophagus and a Roman arch in which hangs a 15th century door allowing access into this ancient church. A wooden building dating to 1181was sited here previously: inside, a replica of a relic from Compestela is housed in a niche, this being a beautifully carved head and foot. Also in the church yard is a carved stone tomb, the Cutt’s tomb, the family of whom formed ‘The Cutt’s Charity,’ still in existence. Monies were collected from the sale of hay, the church and the parish to be given to the poor. Another church, the Congregational Church where we began our tour, has a foundation stone laid by H. O. Wills, the tobacconist. Clarks Hay (Clerics Field) now built upon was the basis for the hay for the Cutt’s Charity The village has connections to an ‘Ann’ and an ‘Alice.’ The ‘Ann’ link is to Ann Edwards, who married a vicar and then set up St Edward’s College in 1834. Subsequently, the primary school was and still is named after her. The ‘Alice’ link is to Liddell House. Alice’s uncle was a vicar whose best friend was Charles Dodgson - aka Lewis Carroll. Did Charles get his idea for Alice from here?
As with many other villages and towns, the railway came and left, arriving in 1883 and departing finally in 1964, having closed to passengers in 1961 and to goods in 1963. Unlike Tetbury, the station was linked to Southampton and Cirencester. The main heart of this charming village is still based around the crossroads. Although the village population has increased greatly, very few houses are weekend cottages. Those tend to be provided by the seven hundred holiday homes around the lakes.

As you enter the village the sign ‘The Village of Saxon, Origin 999 A.D.’ welcomes you, which means that the village celebrated their Millennium before the rest of the country.

The village contains a Mill Leet, which was probably for the flour mill, leading to a pretty row of renovated cottages. A building close by, once the schoolhouse then a factory and now the village hall, is the only thatched village hall in Gloucestershire. There is a 500-year-old Preaching Cross fairly close to the Memorial Cross, on which are listed the thirty-seven men lost out of a population in 1926 of 873 - which now numbers closer to four thousand.

This special year for Highgrove marks twenty-five years of the organic Royal Gardens being open to the public. Dating back to between 1796 and 1798, the house itself was built in a Georgian neo-classical design on the site of an older property. When His Royal Highness moved to Highgrove it possessed little more than a neglected kitchen
garden, an overgrown copse, some pastureland and a few hollow oaks. Since then it has undergone many thoughtful and innovative changes, all influenced and overseen by The Prince of Wales.
From the early days the public has enjoyed visiting the gardens which surround the house, and they now welcome around thirty-seven thousand visitors a year. Visitors can discover how The Prince of Wales has transformed the land adjoining the house into a series of highly individual ‘outdoor rooms,’ which embody his gardening ideals and organic principles, while they enjoy the rich variety of flora and fauna always on display. The grounds of this Royal estate offer a special experience – a place of peace and tranquillity, where the Prince’s unique passion and imagination has been etched onto the Cotswold landscape through a series of exquisite, organic gardens that sit in harmony with nature. “My aim has always been to try and enhance the setting of the house
in the landscape and, above all, to please the eye, warm the heart and feed the soul. One of my greatest joys is to see the pleasure that the garden can bring to many of the visitors - and that everybody seems to find some part of it that is special to them.” HRH The Prince of Wales: “The Gardens at Highgrove”
Mayor’s Report One of the first community events which I attended after my election as Mayor, not in an official capacity but as a volunteer, was the new Tetbury Parkrun. I would like to promote ‘Living Well Longer’ in our community and help to reduce rural and social isolation this year. The new free weekly event - Parkrun - can help with this. You do not have to be a runner to take part, you can run, jog or walk the 5k course, which starts and finishes at the Goods Shed every Saturday at 9.00 am, or you can become a Parkrun volunteer marshal. Afterward, you can meet other participants over coffee and cake or breakfast in The Whistle Stop Café! For more information either pop into the Goods Shed at 8.30 am any Saturday, or contact tetburygoodsshedhelpers@ parkrun.com There is also ‘The Coffee Pot’ at Christ
Church on a Wednesday morning. You can come and meet old and new friends for refreshments and a chat - and in August it will be Holiday at Home – please contact Allan or Jenny Norwood - 01666 504075, e-mail: aandj@mailcan.co.uk who are compiling the Invitation list. For other details, contact: Brian and Sue Cook - 54 The Street, Didmarton, Glos. GL9 1DS - 01454 238222, or e-mail bacwoodb@aol.com. It was good to see so many residents and visitors enjoying themselves at the Annual Woolsack Races and French Market, congratulations to the organisers for putting on this free community event. My first official event - and one at which I was very proud to represent the town was the church service and the salute at the annual Royal Air Force Air Cadet Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing parade on the 8th of June. To see so many young people marching and our community coming out to support them was wonderful. As part of the D-Day celebrations we also had exhibitions at The Malt House – thanks to HOTS and Elisabeth Hancock – and many shops and businesses took part by dressing their windows 1940’s style. Woolsack 2019 What a fantastic day we all enjoyed on the 2nd of May Bank Holiday; we counted at least 4,000 people, so thanks to each one of you for your support! The day started with the stalls, French market and Funfair opening at 10.00 am, followed by Morris Dancers, ‘Ilu Axe’ and the Swindon Silver band throughout the day. We welcomed Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards to open the races at twelve, and to present all the participants from the three primary schools with medals. St Mary’s Primary School won once again, closely followed by Avening and Rodmarton. The women’s races were next with eight entrants, won by Kim Ingleby running for British Heart Foundation and MIND with a time of 1 minute 8.18 seconds. She then joined a team of three with Richard Burton from the Snooty Fox and her friend Sophia also running for MIND, so she ran another TWO lengths – and was
then interviewed by Claudia Winkleman for her Radio Two show. Amazing! Check it out on our website. Ben Sellick won the men’s individual again, with a respectable 54.66 seconds, beating a field of sixteen. He then joined the George Vets men’s team in victory with a time of 3 minutes 25.4 seconds. BPF - our
main sponsor - managed a win with their mixed team, in a time of 3 minutes 32.43 seconds. Impressive! ‘Big up’ to the four teams from the Tetbury RFC under 15’s and 16’s; team two won with an amazing time of 3 minutes 4.03 seconds. Tetbury Rugby Club also ran the parking on the Memorial Recreation Ground; thanks guys!
We supply and install high quality uPVC, aluminium, timber, and composite windows and doors As well as replacing existing windows and doors, we can form openings for new ones using our skilled construction team
Thanks too, to Westonbirt Arboretum, the Tetbury Lions, the Army Cadets, workers from the Town Council, and to all those who donated prizes for our raffle. As well as thanking our sponsors on the website we also appreciate the efforts of residents, businesses and holidaymakers for parking elsewhere and being very good-natured. We will make presentations to Rodmarton Primary for their minibus fund, to the SWR Social Spaces Project and to local youth sports clubs as soon as possible.

St Mary’s C of E VA Primary School We are very fortunate to be so well supported by our local community. As a Church School, we are provided with many opportunities to link with our local Church and the Diocese. Our Year 6 children attended the annual Leavers’ Service at Gloucester Cathedral at the start of June. Many of them had not had much experience of visiting a cathedral and were visibly in awe of their surroundings. This is what one of our pupils wrote:
Joe – Year 6 Our links with the Church over this year have provided numerous opportunities for children to learn about and celebrate the major Christian festivals as well as asking and reflecting on some of the big questions in life. Poppy, Rob and members of the Church run a weekly ‘Faith Explorers Club’ and once a month children and their families come to school on a Sunday to participate in singing and craft activities with Poppy in the school hall. Every week, members of The Open the Book Team come into school to enact Bible Stories for children which help them to reflect on the Christian values and how we live out these values in our lives.
‘On Tuesday 4th June, children in Year 6 went to Gloucester Cathedral for a special Leavers’ service. We were shown to our seats at the front of the cathedral and given song sheets. As we had arrived early, we had plenty of time to take in our wonderful surroundings. We joined many other schools to sing ‘Welcome to our Family’ and other I Sing Pop songs. Bishop Rachel gave each child a key ring in the shape of a cross which was made out of olive wood form Bethlehem.
The generous support we have from some of the groups in the town have also significantly enriched the experiences we can offer our pupils. Donations from the Feoffees in recent years have enabled us to improve the learning environment for our pupils as well as purchase resources such as iPads and books. Money raised by The Tetbury Lions has meant that pupils have been able to go on school trips to The Living Rainforest, The Black Country Museum and Chedworth Roman Villa.
The message we remember from this service is that God will never forget us even though we are moving on to new schools. We had a very special time.’
We also have an amazing group of committed, supportive and driven governors who work behind the scenes to secure the best possible outcomes for
the children of Tetbury. The PTfA also give up huge amounts of their time to raise funds for the school so that we can make improvements to the children’s play areas and enrich their experiences in school. And thank you also, to those members of the community who come in to school to hear children read – because they know how much of a difference that can make to a young person’s life. All these things would not be possible without many Tetbury people. Have a great summer everyone. Mrs Woolley, Headteacher

Tetbury Theatre Group One of the joys of the Theatre Group is the variety the committee tries to offer. In May we saw the musical, ‘Calendar Girls.’ In contrast, for our June trip we travelled to Malvern to see ‘Mindgame,’ a psychological thriller. Not only did the plot play with the reality experienced by Styler, a writer visiting a psychiatric hospital to visit a serial killer – or was he? – and Dr. Farquhar, the psychiatrist – or was he? – but the audience also was confronted with doors that sometimes opened on to cupboards, sometimes on to
corridors, a chain that sometimes stretched and sometimes didn’t and a photo of a golden retriever that became a snarling wolf. Other props changed in the interval – congratulations if you noticed the difference in the china on the tea tray, the
We’re now looking forward to our summer outing in July and our visit to Sonning in August to enjoy lunch together before seeing ‘Private Lives,’ both of which events are sold out.

Tetbury WI The new members of Tetbury WI enjoyed an evening at Linda’s house on May the 20th, these evenings offer an opportunity for new members to get together with each other in the company of the committee members to further familiarise themselves with the various activities on offer at our Institute. On the night, seventeen of our new members joined us for a lively evening of drinks and chat.
Several of our ladies enjoyed a day out to Bristol where Brian escorted them around the SS Great Britain, giving them a taster of what life would have been like on board, pleasant enough for those in first class but not so much fun for those in steerage. The interactive museum proved well worth the visit with some of the ladies even catching up with Mr Brunel himself! Many thanks to Jan for putting together such a successful trip. Meanwhile, Book Group Two are very well settled in their new venue of the Snooty Fox, meeting every alternate month for discussion of our book choice followed by supper on ‘Curry Night’ in the restaurant where we’ve been made so welcome. There are presently three book groups within Tetbury WI, each catering for differing groups of ladies. As our institute grows, perhaps there will be room for some of the newer members to create a Group Book Four? At our monthly meeting we heard from Jacky Robertson who gave an enlightening talk entitled “Bald, 1 Breast and 50”. A widow at 44, and in search of herself, she became an Air Evacuation Medic at 45. She went on to serve for five years with the RAF and saw active service during the Iraq war. She developed breast cancer in her early 50’s. Following surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy she went on to have extensive reconstruction surgery and now heads up the Charity ‘Keeping Abreast’ in the South West. This charity supports ladies
through Breast Reconstruction and Jacky has truly proven how good life can get. Judi travelled to Bournemouth for the NFWI Conference, she gave a comprehensive report on the event and mentioned how spine tingling it was to hear over five thousand members singing ‘Jerusalem’ together as one WI family. Our next coffee date will be on Monday July the 22nd at 10.30 in the Snooty Fox, come along for an informal cuppa and chat. Tetbury WI welcomes members from Tetbury and the surrounding villages and are always happy to welcome new members. Our next institute meeting is on Monday the 8th of July at 7.30 pm at the Goods Shed, where Paul Denney with tell us about his ‘Snow Business.’ Jennifer Walsh, Tetbury WI

What is ‘Bimbling?’ I think it’s a cross between ‘ambling’ and ‘bumbling along.’ The idea is that there are many who enjoy walking, but who want to do it at their own pace, avoiding styles and Nordic poles, and over a relatively short distance (say two to three miles.) It is as much a social occasion as a walk - and it will suit those who want to stop and look, to take a photograph, or just to discuss the view or life in general. There is of course the very successful Tetbury and District Footpath Group and the Cotswold Voluntary Wardens, for those who enjoy a longer walk!
To find more information on the care we can offer you or your loved one, please visit our website, or contact our Home Manager, Tracey Connor. W hc-one.co.uk T 0333 321 4694 E careline@hc-one.co.uk A Ilsom, Cirencester Road, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, GL8 8RX
In a recent piece of research ‘Bimbling’ came out in the top seven activities that potential new U3A members might want. Among many others were: Visiting Historic Buildings, researching Family History, Quiz Nights, Table Tennis competitions, Creative writing and Science and Technology research. The difference is that we have volunteer leaders for all of them except ‘Bimbling,’ so if there is anyone out there who has lots of ideas for short walks and who might also be prepared to lead such a group, would they please contact me? The U3A expects to formally launch in July. If you would like us to keep you informed of progress, or just to volunteer to lead a ‘Bimbling’ group please contact Jeremy North at jeremy@ jeremynorth.com Jeremy North, Tetbury U3A

Tetbury Scout Group
Every adult who gives their time to Scouting supports the development of young people: without them Scouting and the adventures it offers simply would not happen. However, there are those who make an extra special contribution – and in Tetbury we are especially grateful to Jean Buxton and Mike Purcell, both Tetbury “outsiders” who have given over forty-five years of dedicated service to Tetbury Scout Group. We are delighted that Jean has been awarded the Chief Scout’s Bar to her Award of Merit for outstanding service of over twenty-two years – keen, conscientious, imaginative service over a sustained period. This recognises the impact Jean has had on so many of Tetbury’s young people and the wider Gloucestershire District. Just this month Jean and two of our intrepid Scouts enjoyed (endured?) a weekend Survival Course. The Scouts spent the bank holiday weekend at Miserden Park sleeping in shelters they had built out of sticks and leaves found in the woods. They had twenty-four hours cooking all their food on a fire with no utensils or pots - and they lived to tell the tale! Jean is now busy preparing for our next weekend adventure; a ‘Strategy Camp’ in Cirencester Park. If this was not enough, she is also leading the Gloucestershire contingent this Summer to the Haarlem Jamborette in the Netherlands! Thank you, Jean, from all of us, for the dedication you have given Scouting, Tetbury is very lucky to have you. Of course, we are always looking for new leaders and therefore if Jean has inspired you then please get in contact.

Talking about great leaders, our fantastic Cub Leaders Karen and Tony (and Mike again!) are ensuring the Cub section is full of fun and outside adventure. The Cubs are working towards the Navigators Stage 1 badge by finding out about the Green Cross Code, making posters, and looking at road traffic signs around town. They are also completing their Scientist and Athletics badges with Phil, Tetbury’s fittest postman, running a ‘boot camp’. Another highlight was a great evening at Penwood, where the Cubs collected wood, made fires to toast marshmallows to eat with chocolate biscuits and explored a climbing wall! As if this was not exhausting enough, the Cubs are also looking forward to a great evening at the Cotswold water park, where they will be making rafts and working towards a water safety badge. Last, but not least, the brilliant Beaver leaders Sheena and Bruce recently organised a visit to Tetbury fire station, where they learnt all
messages using semaphore. Their reward? Ice creams. Next month the Beavers are looking forward to Forest school at St Mary’s and some pond dipping.

Leighterton Primary School Our children have many opportunities to take part in various events and competitions… …and we are always extremely proud of their wonderful attitudes and good behaviour, when they represent us. During recent weeks the children in Years 3 and 4 have taken part in Quad Kids, an athletics tournament where they did long jump, throwing, 50-metre and 400-metre sprint. They also played relay games, took part in a ‘Kwik Cricket’ festival and worked with teams made up of several other schools. They were coached for the start of the session and after that they played matches on the pitch. Haymead Class will also be taking part in Mini Red Tennis with other local schools. There will be coaching, followed by opportunities to play matches. Our younger children will work with children from the Cotswold Vale Cluster of schools to participate in Cluster Sports events. The Reception and Year 1 children from the other schools will spend the day at Leighterton, hosted by our Sports Leaders who will organise sporting activities and races for children in the other schools. Our Year 2 children will spend the day at Brimscombe, working with other Year 2 children from the CVC schools.

Looking after our world for future generations is extremely important and Dottie, Milly and Phoebe are passionate about reducing the use of single use plastics in school and in our community. They spent a long time preparing a presentation for the whole school on ways that we have already reduced using plastic and asked the children for their ideas so that we can put these into practice too. They shared a quiz about recycling too. Our girls cricket team as they set off for the Cirencester cricket tournament.

Probus coach train scheduled to run non-stop from Paddington to Plymouth, en-route it slipped coaches destined for other seaside resorts. The slimmed-down eight-coach train was then able to tackle the more demanding gradients beyond Newton Abbot. Water for the thirsty engine was scooped up from troughs fixed between the rails. Two hundred and fifty miles of new track were laid in the early 1900s to shorten routes and to speed up services.
“The Holiday Line…” …was the enticing name the Great Western Railway used in the early 1900’s to promote its London to Penzance route. This served England’s largest tourist area. Michael Turner, a West Country railway enthusiast since boyhood days, told us on the 16th
of May how GWR pioneered the marketing of railway services as workers’ holidays increased in changing sociological times. It set an example with its arrangements for its own employees. Michael said the pride of the line was the Cornish Riviera Express. Initially a twelve-

Michael explained that the GWR’s strenuous marketing efforts continued until 1939. Books describing places of interest and holiday haunts were published, attractive paintings of the route’s scenery commissioned, pictorial posters and postcards printed - and children’s jigsaws and other puzzles made available. Refreshment cars were introduced - and prepacked snack lunches sold at GWR refreshment rooms. Lantern lectures entitled ‘Cornwall’ and ‘Romance of the South’ could be borrowed. The introduction of public Bank Holidays boosted the growth of day trips. Resorts such as Minehead, Paignton, Torquay, Weston and Weymouth were transformed: GWR memorabilia abounded. Michael stressed how the totality of the GWR marketing campaign had led to its success. He too scored very highly for his clear factfilled presentation. We had a magic lantern show on the 30th of May, when Pat Furley returned to us. He demonstrated how the early projection system invented in Germany in about 1650 had been developed using painted and then photographic images sandwiched between two glass plates. After showing us early projectors which had used candles, oil or acetylene from carbide as light sources before electricity, Pat, like a traditional travelling magic lantern man, started his show. Advertisements followed by humorous scenes led into a visual journey around Gloucestershire and neighbouring towns. Early examples of moving pictures 16:51developed in the 1850s were included in his wide-ranging collection of historical lantern slides. His fast-flowing commentary linking the slides together with relevant anecdotes, rhymes and musical interludes kept us wellentertained. As one member observed, Pat’s detailed knowledge and enthusiasm shone through too! Looking ahead, our talks during the next two months include the story of the Cuban missile crisis, a description of the role of bees in gardens and the help we can give them, and a history of police use of aircraft. We meet at 10.00 am on the first and third Thursday of each month at the St Mary’s Day Centre, and still have some vacancies. Please ring me on 504243 for further details.

There is a meeting to share our experiences on Wednesday the 3rd of July 2019 at 7.00 pm at Christ Church, where we will discuss with representatives from the town how this reduction in the use of plastic can be sustained.

The pictures of plastic in our oceans are awful. The stats likewise: “330 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year.” “1 truck-load of plastic enters the ocean every minute.” “Over 90% of seabirds are likely to have plastic in their gut.” “It takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to break down in the ocean.” (Taken from ‘How to give up Plastic’ by Will McCallum)

Yet the seas and oceans are created by God to be a source of wonder and delight, ‘Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them.’ ‘Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep?’
Robert W. Carter B.D.S. 7 New Church Street . Tetbury . Gloucestershire . GL8 8DS Telephone (01666) 503788
It is not that plastic is inherently bad, some uses are life-saving - the problem is that we have developed a ‘throwaway culture’ around single-use plastic that is not healthy for society or the oceans. Two of my greatest pleasures are walking the South West Coast Path, and swimming in the sea. There is so much we can and should do to protect the creatures of the ocean, to maintain and celebrate the beauty of our seas.

The “Ogust” convention. In case you and your partner do not have enough options to worry about, here is a new one! For use with weak twos, (which are reasonably frequent,) when your partner opens 2 Spades, Hearts or Diamonds with a six-card suit and 6-10 HCP. (Remember, 2 Clubs is still strong).
The Ogust convention is useful when you, as responder, have a strong hand with 15 plus HCP. (An occurrence which is not so frequent). The Ogust response is “2NT” forcing for one round. Your partner, as weak two opener, must then make an artificial bid as follows:

News from St Marys’ Church I hope the summer brings promises of fun and relaxing with friends and family. For starters, make a date to come and join in the fun of St Marys’ Church Summer Fete on Saturday the 6th of July, between 2.00 and 4.30 pm. It’s the best of an English summer … held on the Vicarage lawn with games, stalls, dog show and delicious cream teas. I can never decide my best bit: choosing the “Vicar’s Favourite” in the dog show or a lovely plate of scones, jam and cream. Let’s hope and pray that the sun shines – but if it’s rainy, join us in the church instead.
to wonder and ask the big questions in life. We are so looking forward to sharing all this with our lovely St Mary’s children. In St Mary’s School this month we are holding our sixth iSingPop CELEBRATE for all the family, on Sunday the 21st of July starting at 4.00 pm in the school hall. Run by all the churches in Tetbury, our theme this month is being good neighbours. And there will be crafts, a Bible story, time for prayers, singing iSingPOP songs and tea for everyone. Do join us!
I hope we can help make your summer fun and relaxing, one way or another. And that matters – after all, God rested on the seventh day, and the Bible tells us that God says that our R&R is holy and blessed - so God bless you this summer. With love and prayers, Poppy. There are more furry creatures involved in our Animal Service in St Mary’s Beverston on Sunday the 7th of July at 11.15 am. Our hymns will include ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ of course – and there’s always lots of giggling when the dogs join in with the singing. Then we have prayers and I go around to ask for God’s blessing on each of the cats, rabbits, dogs. Do come along and bring your beloved pet – the more variety, the merrier! And if you miss the service in Beverston, we have another Animal Service in St John’s in Shipton Moyne on Sunday the 25th of August at 11.15 am. Also in July, our Curate Rob and I will be working with the children at St Mary’s School during Wellbeing Week, to launch our ‘Waterlily’ project. We’re using the image of a waterlily to help the children think about how, spiritually, we can grow and flourish. Have a look at the illustration by Rob’s talented wife, Frankie. The flower is “the me you see” but this is rooted in our hopes, our dreams, our beliefs, our faith and our values. The water is all the things which help deepen our roots and sustain our spiritual life - things like stillness and quiet, beautiful music and nature, or time

Tetbury Hospital We’ve just celebrated Tim Smith’s retirement. Tim has had a long-running career with us, for thirteen years, as maintenance manager, arriving at 6.30 every morning to meet drivers and to open up the hospital. He is well loved by staff and consultants alike and has been a Tetbury resident all his life. I asked Tim to reflect on his time at Tetbury Hospital: “I’ve enjoyed seeing people from all walks of life coming to the hospital for small ops and they’re always happy cheerful people. I’ll say good morning to everyone whether an employee, a patient or relation. For some of the people I’m the first one they see, I’ll help anybody, and I’ll miss that. “My job is a lot different from when I first started here thirteen years ago, because it is much more ‘hands on’ now, and I’m involved more with things around the hospital. You’re learning all the time with equipment maintenance.
“The staff here are wonderful, and I can’t fault any of them. We all have our off days, but I’ll miss them being part of my everyday life – apart from Jo (my wife and colleague,) of course - who I’ll now be cooking for on a daily basis! I’m leaving with a sad heart; it’s been really good here and I’ve really enjoyed my career.”

June saw the last of our extremely popular afternoon tea concerts down at the Shed for the time being. Will Cook and his team of volunteers put on a wide variety of entertainment - and we are all very grateful to all the performers, who gave of their time and talent to help us raise much needed funds. Thanks to the popularity of these afternoons and all the positive comments, the afternoon tea concerts will return in the Autumn when we hope to welcome back the Stroud String Ensemble. Equally popular are our Thursday Cinema nights and we are always looking at ways to improve the experience for our visitors. Plans are in place to improve the speakers and to install a system designed to assist those experiencing hearing difficulties. Another development coming soon will be the introduction of a voucher scheme, enabling you to purchase ten Adult tickets for the price of nine - a perfect gift for all those film buffs out there. So if you know anyone with a birthday or anniversary coming up - this could be ‘just the ticket.’
Who knew that Bridge players are such and fun and supportive bunch of people? A big big “thank you” goes out to South Cotswold Bridge Club for putting on a fabulous Charity Bridge Night in aid of the Shed – raising eight hundred pounds! A particular “thank you” is due to organisers Jim Edwards and Anita Stride who, backed up by Shed Volunteers, ensured it was a full house on the night.
We are delighted to welcome back Ros from Aunt Addies Farm every Saturday morning, bringing her super fresh selection of vegetables (often picked that very same morning.) She is delaying her arrival slightly so as not to get in the way of the parkrun which takes off from alongside the Shed at 9.00 am every Saturday with the super speedy arriving back just 20 minutes later, followed by those taking it a little easier over the next hour – often with their young children – some in buggies - as well as dogs of all sizes. So if you come down for about 11.00 am you can enjoy a relaxing coffee in our Café and catch up with Ros at the same time. For up to date news on all ongoing developments, do keep an eye on our website - or better still why not sign up to our regular newsletters and “What’s On” alerts? You’ll then be among the first to learn what is happening down at the Shed. Go to www.shed-arts. co.uk and follow the links. That’s it for this month but do remember we are always looking for Volunteers to come down and help at the Shed. We are a superfriendly group, offer full training where appropriate and you will be assisting a valuable community hub for the people of Tetbury and beyond.

Phoenix Health Group Managing Demand in General Practice There is an ever increasing demand for appointments in General Practice and we are not immune to this increase in Tetbury. Although we have good availability compared to other GP practices, we need to protect appointments to ensure the GPs can spend more time with patients that have more complex needs and need the extra time.

It’s been estimated that over 90% of all NHS contacts take place in primary care. Whilst there are conflicting views about what is causing the increasing workloads of GPs, the solutions are few and far between. What can we do to help ensure that appointments are used in the most appropriate way? At least part of the solution may be in reducing avoidable demand for GP appointments by directing patients to the most appropriate source of help. GPs often find themselves seeing patients with minor ailments, whose concerns are more relevant to other primary care services or third sector providers. Medical advice is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the NHS 111 service. Calls are free, they are recorded and you will be given advice such as what local services can help you or what to do in any given situation.

Tetbury Art Society tackled. Various tips were given during the evening; for example, Irene keeps a second piece of the paper that she is using on her board to test colours and the top lip should be coloured darker than the bottom lip. For July and August, we sketch and paint outdoors on Monday afternoons, weather permitting. With the good weather that we had last summer, these sessions were well attended, but this is Great Britain and the weather is in the lap of the Gods, so who knows how well we shall fare this year?
Annual Exhibition
To end our Spring Programme, on Wednesday the 5th of June Irene Stuttard visited us, to give a demonstration of portraiture in pastels. In fact, she did two portraits: one of 13-year-old Keira, and one of her grandmother Sally who is a member. Irene works in a variety of mediums and
paints and exhibits in our area. Her work includes landscapes as well as portraits. Starting on a tonal sketch of the younger sitter, Irene says that it is important to get the eyes right and their relationship with nose and mouth. When the line work, done with Conte pencils, was satisfactory and the darker areas filled in, Irene simply finished the face with cream pastel and applied the highlights. After a tea break, a portrait of Sally, Keira’s grandmother, was

Tetbury Nursery Playgroup Once again it is time to say goodbye to our older children, who are moving on to their ‘big schools.’
luck in the next stage of their education and hope they all have a great time at their new schools. We would like to thank all our families for their help and support over the last school year and look forward to seeing those coming back and our new starters in September.
If you wish to contact us about any of our facilities you can do this by ringing 01666 504855 and asking for Karen or Linda or by email on tetburynurseryplaygroup@ eygloucestershire.co.uk Tetbury Nursery Playgroup
During this final term they have lots of opportunities to get to know their new school and St Mary’s in particular always organize a comprehensive transition process, including our taking the children to visit, teachers visiting us - and activities at the school for parents to take their children to. This term we are looking at transport and holidays. The children have a good knowledge of different ways of getting from place to place and the ‘Fantasy Cube’ was put in the garden, where the children enjoyed using it as an ambulance and roleplaying emergency scenarios! Cars and trucks were used to make marks in paint, onto paper and onto the path. For Father’s Day the playgroup children, creche children and play and stay group all made transport style cards for their Dads, Grandads or Uncles. Outside, we set up a car wash, this involved lots of bubbly water and sponges! This role play helped the children with their turn-taking and communication skills. For the holiday/ travel we had lots of maps out for the children to look at to see where different countries are, leading to discussions about the other countries. We have also looked at local maps, looking at familiar landmarks and the preschool children drew a map of their route to playgroup. We set the role-play area up as a travel agent, to book our holidays! Whilst we are concentrating on the children making the transition into big school, we are also supporting those that are using the creche with their move into the playgroup room; a few have lunch with us which really helps familiarize them with the room and different staff.

With children moving up it means that there will be spaces in the creche for occasional or regular care. The creche is ideally suited for parents who want their children to start to learn to socialise, or for parents who need to go to appointments etc on their own. The creche takes children from three months old and can be used for regular care or a one-off. Our Thursday bingo evenings continue, the next one is on the 27th June, then there will be one more in July before a break for summer. The bingo then resumes in September, if you are interested in coming along and winning some lovely prizes whilst helping to raise funds for playgroup please contact us for more information about dates and times. We would like to wish all our leavers good

I’m writing in to tell you about the “Child Ambassador” we are looking for this year, as an accompaniment to the Tetbury Summer Show. Any parent, grandparent, teacher or member of the public can nominate a child that has shown special kindness this year – or done some other public act such as raising money for charity. All they have to do is email us about who they’ve nominated, including a short explanation as to why they’ve made the nomination and what the child has done to deserve the title. Emails to tetburyflowershowparade@gmail.com please. Kind regards, Hayley Ogden

spending most of my time on. The logo is one thing which is very close to being ready to unveil, so keep an eye out to see if you can spot it around the town soon.
It was certainly a wetter June than we’d hoped for,
A very big “Thank you!” is owed to everyone who has filled out the TAYCT survey. It’s great to get input from across the age ranges of what is important and needed in our community.
which meant last minute rearranging of activities for the team as our outdoor plans had to move inside, however it has meant we’ve managed to do plenty of cooking, which is always a favourite at The Pod. We have welcomed a new bank staff worker, Ben Jackson, to the team; great news. Ben has volunteered for us at the cinema evenings and he’s now agreed to help when other team members are on holiday or sick, too. It’s great to add another member of the community to The Pod team.
Nothing is instant and it is all dependent on finances and people, but it certainly helps point us in the right direction of where we need to be focusing our efforts. So thank you for your opinions and your time.
Youth Cinema Evening
End of Year Barbecue It’s hard to believe that we are coming to the end of another academic year! We will be holding an end of year barbecue for our last session on the Memorial Recreation Ground on the 19th of July - weather permitting. We would love to catch up with our regulars there - and to also see some old faces. Thanks to Tetbury Tesco for the donations of food for the event. The Pod will re-open on the first week of September. There has been quite a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ work going on over the last
couple of months, to do with our charity identity, our new website, working on a logo, exploring additional funding opportunities, networking with agencies, developing the pilot for the counselling project and keeping our five star rating for Food Hygiene - as well as keeping all the other services we offer ticking over. This work is often not seen, but as a small charity all of these aspects are very important and what, as the project manager, I am
The next Youth Cinema evening is on Friday the 5th of July at 6.00 pm, down at the Goods Shed. This is one way we are offering more for young people in Tetbury. We will be showing Spider-man: Into the SpiderVerse (which I’m quite looking forward to seeing!) so 11- to 18-year-olds, DO make use of having a cinema in our town! Parents and carers of young people, please do encourage your young people along. There are low cost refreshments available and tickets are only £2.50 beforehand or £3 on the door. We hope to see you there. Jo and the Pod Team, Tetbury Area Youth and Community Trust (TAYCT)

Think you don’t need a water softener?
Health
Clothes
Children in hard water areas are 54% more likely to suffer from eczema. Hair washed in hard water is duller and rougher.
Detergent
Washing clothes in hard water makes the texture rougher and colour duller. Clothing life is reduced by up to 40%.
Utility bills
It’s hard to get a lather up in hard water and this can mean up to 50% more soaps, shampoos and detergents used.
Hot water
Limescale build up in pipes can increase your energy bills by up to 25%.
Pressure
Heating a tank of water can take twice or even three times as long as in a soft water area.
Water flow through a shower head can reduce by 75% in just 18 months of untreated hard water.
The Cotswolds lie in a hard water area where the minerals in water create limescale deposits when heated. The most visible sign of limescale in your home is furred up kettles and hazy glassware, but the hidden problems are costing your household hundreds of pounds a year. Can you afford to ignore your hard water? Contact us at The Tetbury Soft Water Company for a FREE survey and we can help. Our water softeners are ‘fit and forget’ and come with a 10 year Warranty.
