Young by Name Banking on Thanks A phone call, purportedly from the fraud department of my bank, is not the ideal start to my Saturday, waking me from a much-needed lie-in. Yet I’m alert enough to remember early morning raids are a classic means of targeting people at their weakest. Could this woman asking for my personal details be a fraudster herself, trying to catch me off guard? I glance at the phone screen: “Number withheld”. Suspicious, I hang up, haul myself out of bed, and call my bank’s fraud helpline to check. Turns out she was genuine. A flurry of failed debit card transactions in the last twenty-four hours has alerted the bank to potential theft of my details. In addition, my latest online statement reveals a series of successful transactions that are not mine: cinema bookings, fast food bills, and reservations at budget hotels.
Small Change My emotions are mixed. I’m cross that
someone has stolen my card details. (The card itself is still safe in my purse). I’m grateful to the bank for spotting the problem before it escalated out of control: I’m only £207 down so far, which will be restored to my account by the end of Monday. But I’m also disappointed at the downmarket nature of the fraud: KFC, a trip to the flicks, cheap rooms. My criminal lacks style. Has she no ambition?
Low Budget Years ago, my husband had a similar experience. By the time he noticed his credit card was missing, it had been used for a string of identical small purchases at Asda. We pictured the thief going in to the store and buying a case of cheap lager, finding he’d got away with it, then repeating the process until he was too drunk to navigate the aisles.
In a way, I’d be happier if my thief had been more lavish, splashing out on a slap-up meal at the Ritz and tickets for the Orient Express, diamonds glinting as she keyed in my pin number. My chicken-eating cinemagoer just makes me sad. If that’s the height of her aspirations, she’s probably hard-up and leading a dull and difficult life.
Short Shrift But whatever her backstory, she is still a thief with no regard for MY backstory. For all she knew, she might have left me unable to pay rent or mortgage or buy food for my family, while she treated herself - with my money - to non-essentials. Then I realise that the people whose backstories I should be thinking of are the bank’s fraud department. Slogging through their daily case-load, its clerks get little thanks from people like me whose immediate (albeit natural) response to their bad news is shock and anger rather than gratitude and good manners. So, I’ll close by thanking these small-scale superheroes who daily save the world from financial disaster, one stolen bank card at a time. Bank clerks, I owe you. Our monthly meeting was again held at The Priory and our discussions proved as diverse as ever; we also welcomed a prospective new member in Derek Harvey. I hope we didn’t scare him away! We had a presentation by Lion Ben Manluctao, 2nd Vice District Governor, and by David Hurst, President for the Visually Impaired. Both have recently returned from the Philippines, where they were able to complete the drilling and installation of pump wells for three isolated communities. These wells now deliver clean water and are helping to eliminate sight issues for the local children – a fantastic result.
At the start of my year as President I committed to keeping you updated on fundraising efforts and where we spend the money raised and also generously donated by you. Since the 1st of July last year I’m proud to tell you that we’ve distributed in excess of £30,000 – a fantastic achievement. We still have more to do!
200 Club
Lion Alan, head of our Community Services team, recently attended a presentation at the Avening Social Club Café. He was presented with a scroll in appreciation of the support rendered in helping the “coffee shop” to start. It’s proven to be a huge hit, helping people to stay in touch and working to eliminate loneliness for folks living on their own in the town. Lion Ken continues to lead our efforts with Men in Sheds, and he and his supporters are making great progress. Five hundred pounds in donations, together with fencing from Cherrington Forge and building materials from Eagle Plant, have made the allotment site in Herd Lane secure and safe. An eight feet by four feet shed is now on order and should provide further entertainment as Ken’s group plan to assemble it themselves shortly after the Easter break.
With continued communication in mind, we’ve booked a stand at the “Get to know your Town” open day, planned for the Dolphins Hall on the 22nd of June. Attending will be many organisations and voluntary groups and the event is aimed primarily at our new neighbours in the recently built developments on the

An annual payment of £13 buys you into the Lions 200 Club lottery. We use these subscriptions to help local causes – and you get the chance to win a cash prize! Application forms can be obtained from Malcolm at Tetbury Hardware. Each quarter, the Tetbury Lions 200 Club makes a special prize payment of £100. This month’s £20 prizes were won by Alan Cross, J A Huntley, Mrs V Ball and Caroline Miles. Many congratulations to them from everyone in the 200 Club. Lion Gail North
Since they have more to do to tidy the site as well, the assistance of more men would be welcome. The project offers a community space for men to connect, converse and create; no special skills are required, just a willingness to take part, so if you’re sitting indoors for longer than you’d like, and you want something a little different in your life, do please join them. Currently, they meet at the allotment on Wednesday from 10.00 am for a couple of hours, but this is not set in stone and if members want to meet on another day or even on more than one day, that’s also possible. There’s no joining fee and no annual subscription: all you have to do is turn up. Ably coordinated by Lion Saxon, we’ve been selling tickets for our Easter Raffle and holding our annual Bucket Shake outside Tesco. As a result, we have raised in excess of £1,000 in aid of Longfields, our Charity of the year, so on behalf of all at Lions thank you to everyone for your continued support. Thank you to all the local business who contributed prizes too, and congratulations to all the winners. Some of our Lions colleagues supported a Quiz Night at the Bowls Club recently, - and a great night was had by all. We were again delighted to be able to support them with their recent developments.

Dolphins Dramatic Society The Ghost Train has now pulled out of the Dolphin’s Hall station; the passengers are at their proper destinations and having a well earned rest. Even the parrot is resting. No eggs, though! Well done to all involved with building and painting the set - very authentic; such clever people - Ian Smith, Alexander Ball and Anne Smith. Also, a special ‘Well done!’ to Alexander Ball, our Director. A lot of work is involved in directing a play and a lot of patience with the actors is required. Alexander has this – and talent in abundance. After twelve years, we now have to say goodbye to David Hudson, our wonderful sound and electrician man. It really is a sad day, but travelling to Tetbury twice a year from Cornwall, all the work and the equipment he puts together for us and the amount of time he is away from his wife Jo, have combined to let him know that it’s time to call it a day. He has been brilliant, and he has done so much for us. Those of you who came to see ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ should know that it was David, with help from Anne, who built the whole set - as well as providing the sound and lighting. He will be very, very much missed by all The
Dolphins. An enormous ‘THANK YOU!’ then to David, for all he has done for us. We wish him and Jo all good things for the future. Other ‘thank you’s’ need to be extended to The Snooty Fox, for displaying our promotional banner and lending a special chair, to Tetbury Town Council for displaying a banner, to all the traders that placed an advert in the programme, to the shops that displayed posters, and to the fabulous Jean Lockey for helping to put those posters up, far and wide. A special thank you to IHS Markit for all the printing they did, Matt
thank you for being so understanding with the delays that occurred and also thanks to Malc Philby – Tetbury Hardware – our amazing Box Office Manager. Where would we be without you all? Last but not least a big thank you to Cotswold Costumes, who have been terrific. The Society is now busy voting for the autumn production. What will the pantomime be? Who will be directing it? I’ll tell you soon! Terri White, Dolphin’s Dramatic Society

Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun All Fools Day has passed - and the Government has been so preoccupied with Brexit… …that there was no parliamentary time left to deal with the severe increase in probate court fees intended for those estates with a gross value of more than £300,000. I suspect they will not give up, as this is
their second attempt; the last one was abandoned before the 2017 general election. I will therefore be advising more clients to opt for joint ownership, which

means that on death the deceased owner’s interest passes to the survivor, without needing a grant of probate. I believe, anyway, that young widows or widowers in particular should be given as much freedom as possible to re-establish their lives, without restraint from trustees or others. Control is basically what a lot of our law is about. Lasting powers of attorney are about handing over control to others - and these can be even more tricky than wills. If there is a mistake in spelling or with an address in a will, this can easily be rectified, and addresses are not necessary anyway. However, in a power of attorney, such errors can be fatal. In one of my more recent cases I acted for a widow who had appointed her son and daughter as her attorneys. Three years later the son, over from the Channel Islands, complained that the bank was refusing to recognise his appointment because his address did not match his driving licence. My records indicated that he had been in two years ago to check the contents of the power. The lesson I have learnt is that in future I cannot simply rely on others to check the details - but that I shall need, in many cases, to check ID on the attorneys. We are here to protect our clients, not just ourselves.

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal advises that “freedom of speech is not an unqualified right.” Making offensive or abusive comments to another firm or about that firm or its client, or to unrepresented individuals, can land you in trouble with the Ethics Tribunal as a solicitor. This can be very challenging. I have already made my views clear on the government’s intended probate fee increase. If I were to express similar views on how other legal organisations conduct themselves, I could be in trouble - but that is just as well, because making offensive comments is not going to assist in finding solutions. Although the right strongly expressed comments can sometimes provide a wakeup call and a little self-analysis, resulting in a helpful outcome. Michael Hodge, Lansdowne Legal

St Mary’s Playgroup What a busy month we have had… …our children have enjoyed so many fantastic sessions with visits to the library and fire station, as well as forest school each week! The children celebrated Mother’s Day with cards and gifts as well as our annual Mother’s Day morning. It was a special time to invite in all the wonderful mothers, grandmothers and special ladies in our children’s lives to share in tea, cakes and special gifts to say thank you for all the hard work they do in looking after our little ones. As a playgroup we have a very limited outside space on site which is why we spend lots of time going out and about enjoying our town and local spaces which helps teach them road safety as well as how to adapt their behaviour in different situations and surroundings. We are however are currently developing our outside area to allow free flow during each session and is already looking great with new shelves, hanging baskets and space saving ideas to store and display equipment, as well as a brand new mud kitchen to bring a touch of forest school to playgroup. A huge thank you to our local ‘heroes’ for their muscle-power and continued support with this project and Forest school – you know who you are! In a few weeks’ time we are holding a joint open afternoon with llsom house to showcase the care home and introduce the ‘secret
garden’ to local residents and families. There will be activities both inside and out as well as afternoon tea – we are looking forward to seeing the children and residents both enjoying a warm drink and a sticky jam scone! We have seen so many benefits for both young and old from our children spending time with the residents - they really do bring out the best in each other and we are so excited to see how this will continue to flourish and look forward to developing our partnership in providing more opportunities for both age groups to enjoy together. Our ‘famous’ Easter egg hunt is now in full swing around the town, with ten golden eggs hidden in shop windows this year for local children to find. We have been inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate factory as our theme this time and have some very creative and ‘wonky’ scenes to spot. We hope many of you had fun looking for them over the Easter break. We have welcomed so many new children this half term and our playgroup family is really growing. Please join us at our friendly toddler session on Monday mornings from 9am at the Christ church to see what we are all about, chat with staff and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee whilst your children enjoy the lovely activities on offer. We also have some exciting new sessions from September so please keep a look out for more details of this over the summer term! St Mary’s Playgroup

Tetbury Camera Club Over the months of each year we have some of the South West’s most creative minds come and talk to Tetbury Camera club to share their expertise, techniques and knowledge. Sometimes this is technical, other weeks it is simply experience but always it is worthwhile knowing about, so here are a few tips we have had which will hopefully help everyone reading this improve their picture-taking this spring. As Louis Pasteur, famous microbiologist and slightly less famous photographer said: ‘The best camera is always the one you know how to use.’ Very true. To help you get the best phone images it helps to remember the ‘rule of thirds.’ To help maximise the impact of a picture first
divide the scene into nine segments, then try to avoid having the focus of attention in the centre. Place people - or faces - to the right or left third, the horizon in the lower third, and so on. To help you do this most phone cameras incorporate a control which will enable you to place a grid on the screen, which will also help you to take
pictures which are level, not at an angle. Want to avoid taking blurred shots? The tripods used by professionals tend to be bulky and heavy, but an effective alternative can be to use your elbows. Just rest them on a wall, table or other solid surface. Alternatively, hold them firmly against your side. That will avoid camera shake and the peril of blurred images for a great many pictures. As one of our recent speakers said, pictures are taken, photographs are made That means printing your best shots out onto paper. That way you are much more likely to share them with friends and enjoy them in the future. Try googling for printing them from your camera for instructions if you don’t already have the software.

You don’t have to wait for everything to be perfect to take great shots. This month’s picture, which was taken by Paul Bullivant, who was a recent guest speaker, is arguably more intriguing and interesting showing the two people looking out to sea than it would have been if he had waited for them to turn around and be face-on to the camera. Another helpful tip from Paul was to encourage people to look upwards when pressing the shutter. A by-product of this is that for portraits people appear to look younger and more interesting. If you are trying to capture a small group of people, ask them to touch each other, by resting a hand on an arm or shoulder. The result is a group looking less stilted, more interesting and often happier having their picture taken. Like to read more of these tips and techniques? Have a look at our web site, www.tetburycameraclub.org.uk or come along to our regular meetings on Tuesdays at 7.30 in The Priory Inn. We are happy to see new faces and will do our best to make you welcome. We would also be delighted to see you in person in the Tetbury Market House on May 27, (Woolsack Day,) from 10.00 am, when we will be staging a free exhibition of some of the recent work taken by members.

Mayor’s Report part that the Americans played in the D-Day landings and what was done at the Malt House during this crucial time. If you don’t know what happened, then come along and find out! Some of you will remember I unveiled a plaque, nearly four years ago now, in commemoration of the work done at the Malt House during the Second World War. Do you have any memories that have been passed down of events during the 1940’s? If so, we would love to hear from you. You can contact us at the Tetbury Town Council offices; Tara and Georgina will be happy to capture any details or to photocopy any old pictures that are relevant. I had the pleasure to join Addie for her 100th Birthday Celebrations and it was a joy to see her with all her friends round her - and to greet her children and her grandchildren from Australia, who flew in especially for the occasion.
Dear Tetbury Residents - this will be my last Mayoral piece,
time for all their hard work and dedication.
It is lovely to see so many Tetbury people standing for office, twenty-two in total; this is a fantastic number and just what we need! No doubt some present Councillors will return, and some new faces will appear; as long as everyone works for the good of the people of Tetbury, the town will be in safe hands. I would like to thank Jason, Caroline and Emma who are not standing again this

as we have the elections coming up in May and there will be a new Council on board. It has been a memorable year - and I have enjoyed serving you as Mayor and Councillor.
Tetbury Town Council is leading the D-Day celebrations this year, and we are hoping to embrace both the locals of Tetbury and its shop owners in this event. We also hope to have the Goods Shed involved with exhibitions, displays and 40’s food served at the Whistle Stop Café.
On another note it is sad to see shops closing in the town, often due to high rental prices. Whilst we have no control over these rents as a Council, I will be writing to Geoffrey CliftonBrowne to protest the situation and to see if there is anything that Parliament can do to put a cap on these high rents. I have often said, over the years that I have been on the council, that we need ‘start-up shop premises’ for those people who could then start small and grow. Is there an entrepreneur out there who would like to make this happen? The old Abbeyfield House would be an excellent space. Think about it and let me know.

Luckington Community School As a parent and a governor, I was lucky enough to be part of some of the Luckington School World Book Day events. To mark the day, our class one teacher had planned a great selection of activities for all the children from Reception to Year 6. To start the day off, parents were invited into the school to share one of their favourite books with a group of children. The children were lucky enough to be served toast and hot chocolate by the teachers while listening to a story-what a treat! Every inch of space was in use as parents read in the hall, library and classroom. The atmosphere was really lovely; the children were enthralled, their parents were enjoying sharing their stories and it was particularly lovely to see how children of different ages collaborated, as is so often the case at our school. During the day, the children had a chance to use their favourite story to share with friends. This was reported on very favourably by my own children, who
enjoyed the opportunity to talk about books with their peers.
that we could play as families to get the creative juices flowing!
To mark World Book Day, both classes have been lucky enough to have ‘author visits,’ kindly funded by our Parish council. In each case, the authors came in, talked about their writing, showed their published books and helped the children plan their own stories. On World book day itself, two of the authors ran a workshop for families about story ideas. This was very well attended by our families. We learnt games
Finally, there was a Share a Story photo competition. There are some wonderful photos of our pupils and staff sharing stories with someone in unusual places; they are displayed in our school entrance hall. Please feel free to pop into school to admire them. Thank you to the school community for making our Book Day such a success. Jane Henshall, Parent and Governor

Probus warmed up as we moved to sunny Morocco and the southern United States, for airconditioning trials. The seemingly insoluble difficulties encountered by another member, trying to holiday in Africa with only Saudi Arabian riyals as currency, were challenges no-one else had faced. More tales and points of interest included being told that Seven Springs, near Cheltenham, was justified in being regarded as the true source of the Thames, (not the Thames Head,) - because of its greater height above sea level, longer distance from the river mouth, and constant water flow. It was also explained why the Thames statue, now at St John’s Lock, might be regarded as being bisexual.* There were no dull moments!
An Arctic no-show was not due to snow, but because an unfortunate car accident stopped our speaker getting to us on the 21st of March. So, instead of seeing some glorious Arctic tundra as planned, several members rose to fill the void.
Interesting personal experiences flowed, appropriately the first being an account of testing motor vehicle instrumentation in seriously sub-zero Swedish and North Norwegian temperatures. This led to a discussion of the techniques used to keep traffic flowing in northern territories, including Fairbanks, Hudson Bay, and even the runway of Trondheim Airport. Things

Our talk by Tom Davis on the 4th of April about the history and present-day uses of the Castle Combe Racing Circuit was full of information. Formerly the perimeter road of a wartime airfield, the circuit opened in July 1950. With a reputation for being a very fast and dangerous track, a lap record of 130.93 mph was established in 1997. There are now eight main motor racing and two motor cycling racing days annually. In between are historic and classic car parades, cycle racing and special guest appearances. Famous racing names abounded, as Tom explained how motor racing had changed during the 69-year history of the 1.86mile circuit. Two chicanes were installed in 1998/99 to slow cars down, and increasing noise abatement pressures continue to this day, precluding the racing of larger and noisier cars. Club championships include saloons, sports and GT cars, as well as Formula Fords. Track days which permit drivers to experience the track with their own or with borrowed cars are a sell-out. Call 01249 782417 for details of this and racing school experiences! Many car shows and regular car boot sales are held. Tom stressed that motor racing - and the public’s conception of it - has continued to change considerably since the turn of the century. Increasing safety rules and regulations had led to increased expenditure, but classic car sport had boomed. Asked about the possible introduction of electric racing cars, Tom thought that this was probably inevitable, especially in view of increasing opposition to car emissions. But a simple ‘whoosh’ seems unlikely to properly replace the exhilarating roar and thunder of a conventional racing car. So now onto bonsai trees, the Great Western Railway and a magic lantern show, during May. Theo Stening, Probus. 01666 504243 *Ed: Or ‘intersexual’ perhaps. Sadly, having died in 1881, sculptor Raffaelle Monti was unavailable for comment.

Chelworth Bookworms ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’ by John Kennedy Toole Ignatius J Reilly is grotesque. Tall, obese, rude and flatulent, his character is as unpleasant as his appearance is strange. Considering himself a literary genius, although never actually getting around to publishing anything, his long-suffering mother Irene turns to drink. However, after crashing her car, she finally forces her son out onto the streets of New Orleans to look for work in order to raise enough money to pay for the damages. Ignatius’s search for work introduces us to a strange collection of characters, none of whom are much more appealing than he is. From the timid policeman to the shady bar owner, the senile office worker to the shrewish wife, we wonder what’s the point of introducing all these disparate people?
Indeed, it is only in the final quarter of the book that the pace quickens and the trail of lies and excuses that Ignatius leaves behind him finally come together.

Although very well-written, with quick penpictures of the characters that allow you to visualise each scene with clarity, some in the Book Club found it hard to care about any of the people involved, or about their eventual fate. Classed as a work of comic genius by some, (it won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction,) this book undoubtedly divided opinion - and received mixed reviews.

Are you paying too much for Broadband? You may have noticed that most of the internet service providers have been increasing their monthly subscriptions recently. Now is the ideal time to check if you are paying too much. If you have a limited download quota, you are certainly on a legacy package. With video streaming and catch up TV, all providers offer as much data as you need, negating extra data costs, so you
do not have to worry about extra charges. However, some providers may throttle your data at peak times, so do check this if this could be an issue for you. Packaged accounts can save you money by subscribing to broadband, home phone, mobiles and a TV service all with one provider, but do your sums carefully as incremental price increases can wipe out any savings. If you make calls from your landline, consider paying a fixed price for all of them. However, if you already pay a fixed price, do make sure you can justify it.
Computer Advice Also, if available, do pay annually for line rental as it can save you a chunk of cash. PlusNet, for instance, offers this facility. If you already have a bundled package, check if there are features you are not using, such as TV channels you rarely watch. TalkTalk now charges ÂŁ4 per month just to have the option of using their TV service! If you are happy just to use Freeview, you can stop paying this, but if you would still like the option of viewing premium channels, leave this payment in place. Also bear in mind that if you cancel any premium recordings you have made will be deleted. Have you thought of upgrading to fibre? The maximum ADSL2+ connection speed is up to 24 mbps, with most within Tetbury getting between 14 and 18 mbps download speed and 1mbps upload, depending upon your distance to the exchange. Fibre offers speeds which are in excess of 35 mbps download and 9 mbps upload. If you are on a legacy package, it could be cheaper for you to upgrade. It will give you a faster connection, particularly if you upload anything onto the internet, use an online backup service, send large attachments or use video conferencing. Another reason to upgrade to fibre now, is to ensure you have the connection before your local fibre cabinet becomes oversubscribed. If this happens, you may have a long wait!
0550519
Town & Country News
If you have more than one phone line, consider transferring one of them to your internet connection, which will save paying line rental, usually over ÂŁ180 per year. Providing you have a decent connection speed, it is very easy to do.

More information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or you can phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666-503926. We meet on the first Wednesday of most months in St Michael’s Hall, Silver Street, Tetbury at 7:30 pm and you will find that we are a friendly group welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached.
In April, Elisabeth Hancock of Five Mile Framing based in Avening gave us a talk on ‘The Art of Framing’. She first started framing thirty-five years ago in Birmingham and later, until recently, lived with her late artist-husband in Tetbury. Starting with the frames themselves, she told us that there was a range of possibilities from buying basic ready-made frames through to having an heirloom framed with conservation-grade materials and a special glass. To reduce the cost and to have a frame that was sympathetic to the picture, you could buy a bare wooden frame and finish it yourself to suit the picture. An oil painting requires a deep, generous sized frame although sometimes it is possible to extend the painting around the side of the canvas and do without a frame at all. If the work is to be sold, then the frame should be a more neutral colour so that it will suit most people’s homes. Elisabeth then told us about the mounts used to support and display a picture within the frame and hold it away from the glass and about types of glass. And the frame and mount should not be stronger than

There was advice too on how to attach a painting to a mount board, pre-stretching watercolour paper, storing a picture and about hanging it. It was a very informative evening and was well-received by her audience. Girlguiding For one weekend, thirty Guides and two Brownies found their courage, tried new things, worked in teams, learnt trust, helped and encouraged each other, and ate lots of food! Our PGL residential was a great success. Teamwork was particularly great, and even stretched to keeping dormitories clean and tidy – the best we’ve ever seen. We were lucky with fantastic weather on the Saturday - and made the most of it, but we were a little disappointed with the cold wind on the Sunday. However, in March it could have been so much worse… PGL – many people think it stands for parents get lost, but it is in fact the initials of the man who started the company – and what a good idea that was. Our activities included a tree top trail, the vertical challenge, (Wow, that was high!), aeroball, a challenge course and crate stacking. Although some girls were reluctant to
begin with, it was wonderful to see them have a second try at something – and succeed. As already reported, we were able to offer this residential at a greatly reduced price, thanks to the generous donation from the Tesco blue token scheme. Guiding
is all about offering opportunities in a safe girl-only environment and we certainly fulfilled this aim during the weekend. Thank you to the five volunteer leaders who gave up their own weekend so that the girls could enjoy the experience. Rainbows have had fun with food recently - they used fondant to reproduce their Rainbow ‘swoosh’ logo for the top of cakes, and then made a heart to go on another cake for their Mums. They’ve also made chocolate krispie cakes. Scrumptious. They’ve had two evenings outside this term, one when they practised teamwork by playing games – football, boules and team tag - and another night using what they could see to make up a story. They then heard the Brownie story from Nicky, a Brownie leader, whilst enjoying hot chocolate under the trees. Their final meeting included awarding a pot of gold badges to the girls moving up to Brownies.
1010319
The leaders from Tuesday Brownies have taken it in turns to help at a Rainbow meetings this term, which is a great way to help the Rainbows feel comfortable about moving on to Brownies. We are still looking for a volunteer or two to help at Rainbows on a Monday evening though, to assist Rhiain, so please get in touch if you would like to help. Brownies have been busy {as always!} and have gained a lot of interest badges from the new badge book. They’ve also made chocolate truffles and Mothers’ Day tea pots. An egg hunt, bunny ears and chick biscuits could only mean that it was the meeting before Easter! A total of thirteen new girls have recently been enrolled into the two Brownie units. Now that the clocks have changed we hope to spend lots of meetings outside and we have promised to help the Council by doing some litter picking.

the millions who have been forced to flee the war in Syria. Our journey through Holy Week was a profound experience, sharing and reflecting together on the final events of the Last Supper and Jesus’s arrest, trial and crucifixion. Then, on Holy Saturday, we met at 9.00 pm to light the ‘Easter Fire’ outside the church. This symbolises the return of light: Jesus risen from the dead. That evening our service finished with fireworks, bells and a glass of bubbly to celebrate. That was followed by a joyful family service – with an egg hunt – on Easter morning!
April 2019 was been a memorable month for St Mary’s Church! We have had so much to celebrate. It began with the completion of our fantastic new West Door entrance. With its wide sweeping steps and ramp, it looks like arms open to welcome people in. It’s beautiful! If you haven’t seen it already, do call by. And that was matched by the wonderful news that our Christian Aid 100-Mile Walk had raised the money needed, so that with match-funding from the charity ‘Bread for the World,’ET a total of £100,000 goes help 720310 Lumley:Layout 1 to 19/2/10

Phoenix Surgery News We are delighted to announce that Dr Sarah Cardew has now returned from maternity leave… …and joins us in Tetbury as a partner. She will lead a personal list which is shared with Dr Emma McMyn. This now gives us three personal lists in Tetbury. The personal lists are a very popular system, which provides the best continuity of care and patient safety and which has run successfully for many years in Cirencester. The other two lists are held by Dr Angus McMyn and Dr James Woodward. Dr Rohit Sethi continues to see patients in Tetbury for two sessions each week, but does not hold a personal list here.
We have engaged the services of a Dispensary Consultant to improve the Dispensing offering across the group. Initially this has resulted in increased opening hours, and once we are fully staffed the Dispensary will be open from 8.30 am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday. We would like to extend our dispensing service to all eligible patients, to offer this improved service. Eligible patients are those who live more than one mile away from a pharmacy, which includes many patients living in the surrounding villages. We will also be trialling a delivery service soon - and if this is successful, we will have a Phoenix Vehicle to deliver drugs and practice supplies to the whole group. We have placed a fully automatic Blood Pressure Monitor in a discreet corner of the waiting room, to encourage patients to take their own blood pressures and to hand the results in to us to record on your notes.
General Handyman Services Incl. Loft & Garage Clearance
It is important that your blood pressure is regularly monitored, as it provides an early warning of possible future health risks such as stroke and heart disease. This is particularly important if you have not had your blood pressure taken in the last five years. Please take advantage of this new service when calling into the surgery and hand in your readings to the receptionist. We had the first of our new Patient Participation Group meetings at the end of March, where we elected a chairman, Mrs Pat Hodges, and two vice chairs. Minutes of the meeting are available to read at the surgery or on our website. The next meeting will be held on the 27th of June at 6.30 pm at Phoenix Tetbury. Please contact the surgery if you wish to join us.

Tetbury Cricket Club is on Sunday the 12th of May, with a 10.30 am start. Speaking of the girls, over the last few weeks we’ve challenged them to design their own logo for their new T20 style blue kit, and the entries we’ve had have been fantastic. The winner, chosen by our Vice President Emma Monks, (and thank you for your donation toward the cost of the kit too Emma!) - uses a clever play on words with ‘empowHER’ emblazoned across the front of the shirt in a colour scheme which give a nod to the ‘This Girl Can Campaign.’ Clearly, we’re building a very talented squad here, and not just from a sporting sense.
Good day fellow athletes, is it really May already?
gets you ready for the season like a couple of weeks on a bumpy outfield, compared to a smooth Sports Hall floor!
Given that the answer is obviously “Yes,” I find myself wondering why we worry about not having cricket for six months, as year-on-year the next season seems to come around faster than ever.
The season starts on Saturday the 4th of May for our senior teams and even earlier for the girls, on Wednesday the 1st of May. We’re particularly excited about fielding a girls’ team for the first time and we would encourage any of you who have an interest in women’s sport to show your support when they have a home game at the Memorial Recreation Ground. The first one
Winter nets have finished and both senior teams and our new girls’ team are now facing the prospect of braving the elements and training outdoors. Nothing
April has also seen us hold our ‘Cricket Force Day’ at The Rec, and some of you may have spotted us tidying up the surroundings the pitch and the garage in preparation for the season ahead. Who could have guessed the amount of rubbish you can collect in a small garage over a twelve-month period? I’d like to take the opportunity to remind any new residents of Tetbury, or indeed any ‘retired’ players, we’re always willing to welcome new or returning faces to the club, and 2019 is no different. Whether you’re 14 or 70, bowl at 90 mph or 10, take your cricket seriously, or just want to enjoy a more sedate pace and enjoy the social (drinking!) side of the game, we’ve a place for you. Pop along to one of our outdoor training sessions (either on a Wednesday or Thursday,) or drop us an email at tetburycricketclub@gmail.com to meet the team and join in the fun. Even if you don’t want to play, we have several non-playing membership options available too. That’s enough from me; thanks again for taking the time to listen to the latest goings on at our club. I really MUST go and find that kit out of the loft, otherwise I’m going to be late for the start of the season.
We look forward to bringing colour and cleanliness back to your favourite floor coverings. Contemporary or traditional, large or small, piled or flat woven, hand knotted or tufted, shaggy or sheepskin, wool or silk – your rug will be cleaned using the right tools and techniques for the job. You can drop off or we can collect by appointment and either way you're very welcome to visit, discuss your requirements, and see us in action.

THE BENEFITS OF LASER TREATMENT The laser is used as an adjunct to other medical treatments. Our aim is to use a multi-modal approach to improve both your pet’s and your own quality of life without putting them through lots of invasive procedures or additional stress. Our therapeutic laser works by emitting infrared radiation at a specific frequency and wavelength which ensures it penetrates to the deeper target tissues.
The laser has a multitude of uses ranging from chronic osteoarthritis, to traumatic wounds and even ear infections. By changing the settings on the laser, we can target different tissues and therefore create different responses.
• Osteoarthritis • Soft tissue sprains/strains • Acute traumatic injuries - bruising, swelling • Joint problems • Tendon damage • Haematomas • Gingivostomatitis (gum inflammation) • Otitis externa (ear infection) • Surgical wounds • Traumatic wounds • Anal gland abscesses
It stimulates the body’s normal cells to do their job faster, to:
• • • •
Reduce inflammation Reduce swelling Relieve pain Improve/speed healing
With laser treatments there are no side effects. As with all treatments, some animals will respond better than others but there are no negative effects in the short or long term. There are certain areas of the body that we do not want to laser, such as the eyes, thyroid and lumps but as long as we don’t apply the laser directly to these areas, we won’t cause any damage or stimulate lumps to grow. The majority of insurance companies will cover laser therapy.
The main thing to know about laser is that it is safe, noninvasive and very well tolerated. The procedure can be done during a normal consult slot, no clipping of fur is required, and the patient does not need to be sedated. There is no heat nor other sensations generated by the laser so generally the patient remains quite relaxed.
We ‘ve had some fantastic success stories whilst using the laser, improving the lives of a number of our clients and their beloved pets. If you would like any further information please speak to one of our Client Care Team, or please email me: dogandcat@georgevetgroup.co.uk
The procedure usually lasts about 20 minutes. All laser courses are tailored to the individual animal and condition but in general, for the chronic cases such as osteoarthritis, there is an induction course of six sessions over three weeks and at this point we would drop to weekly or even fortnightly treatments to maintain the benefits seen. Laser can be used on all animals and so it isn’t restricted to just dogs and cats. A range of conditions can benefit from laser therapy

History of Tetbury Society ‘The English Civil War in the Cotswolds’ was the subject of Dr. John Paddock’s talk to HOTS on the 4th of April. He explained that he would cover the principal events during the first English Civil War from 1642 – 1646. Gloucestershire was at the centre of operations because it lay between Oxford, where Charles I set up his headquarters (London being strongly pro-Parliament,) and Wales. The population north of the county tended to favour the King, with Evesham being a royalist stronghold, whereas the ‘west country’ was strongly for Parliament. This meant that the two main roads through Gloucestershire – the Fosse and Akeman/ Ermin Street - were ideal for moving troops. It was also important to control the ports of Bristol and Gloucester. The royalist troops needed uniforms and bedding and the
clothier merchants in the Cotswolds were regarded as easy targets. However, one of the prime causes of the war was the King’s shortage of money. He had tried to raise money by imposing ‘Ship Money’ tax on inland towns, which was regarded as illegal. In 1642 much of Gloucestershire not committed to the antagonists Gloucester City favoured Parliament, in 1643 Cirencester was another of

At the beginning of hostilities Tetbury was one of the towns that favoured the King, although it was not openly supportive. HOTS has a copy of a Charles I letter ordering that Tetbury be spared in the hostilities as he had dined well there. Importantly, Beverston and Berkeley castles were royalist strongholds and the royalist ‘high tide’ was 1643. However, in the summer of 1644 Colonel Massey made raids on royalist strongholds and captured Berkeley and Beverston castles and the surrounding area. Parliament was then in control of Tetbury, until the end of 1646. Dr. Paddock stressed the dreadful effect of the Civil War on the lives of ordinary people. Civilians were killed and homes at that time were generally timber built, so Page 1 were easily burned. Stock was plundered to feed the armies, crops were down-trodden by marching troops and cavalry, and cloth was stolen for uniforms, tents and bedding because the King had so little money. The hoards of coins and valuable possessions that can be dated to those times are witness to the panic action. Beverston castle was deliberately damaged (‘slighted’) at this time. It is estimated that the numbers killed in the entire Civil War was a much larger proportion of the population than in WWI. Generated by: Jukeboxprint.com

first towns openly to favour Parliament. On the 2nd of February 1643 royalist troops attacked Cirencester with mortar and gunfire, setting fire to homes and locking the inhabitants in the church. From the 10th of August to the 5th of September, a large royalist force lay siege to Gloucester - but Colonel Massey famously held them at bay and saved the small Parliamentary garrison and townspeople. The siege was relieved when Parliamentary troops under the command of the Earl of Essex arrived from London.
We enjoyed a very interesting talk which was well illustrated. Our next meeting is also about warfare! Alan Dolling from the Battlefields Trust will speak about the ‘Battle of Nibley Green’. That is on Thursday, May 2nd at 7.30 in Christ Church.

Tetbury in Bloom establish themselves before the longest, hottest, driest few weeks for the past few decades arrived, we then had the relentless and almost-desperate task of trying to keep them all alive.
With May arriving, the spring display is almost over, and we’ve spent the past few weeks visiting the beds and deadheading the daffodils and tulips in an effort to keep everything looking as neat and tidy as possible. Unfortunately, with the bulb leaves now having to be left to die back naturally, to allow the goodness to be reabsorbed for next year’s display, the next few weeks will look anything but neat and tidy! On a positive note, the perennials have started to fill the beds with fresh new growth - and the early flowering shrubs and those that produce colourful new foliage, are coming into their own. Although the beds won’t necessarily look
their best this month, at least it won’t be long before the 4th of June arrives, and we start planting the summer displays. This will be our fourteenth summer season and the planting schedule has now become a well-practiced operation, with everyone on the team coming out each Tuesday and Thursday evening throughout the month of June, to plant the thirty-three beds and forty-two tubs and troughs which we tend throughout the town. In 2019 all we’re really hoping for is that we don’t have to contend with the same challenging conditions that we had last year! Having finished planting all the summer bedding plants at the end of last June, because they hadn’t had time to
Our efforts did pay off though and it highlighted the advantages of our sustainable mixed-planting style of using shrubs and long flowering perennials to form the mainstay of the beds. Apart from having to water the newly planted bedding geraniums and antirrhinums, the amount of water required to keep the other plants alive was minimal, and once the ‘normal’ British summer conditions returned, everything made up for lost time and thrived. 1110609 Jo Gale:Layout 1 19/5/09 Sue Hirst, Team Leader,

Tetbury Bowls Club Winter is now officially over, and we’ve had our last off season Friday evening Social – Bingo!
At the end of March, it was ‘all hands on deck’ for the big spring clean. Lots of us arrived early in the morning, rolled up our sleeves and got stuck into washing, polishing, sweeping and dusting inside, with weeding, painting and tidying outside. All pristine and ready for our Opening Gala - great to get the kit out and start playing again on our lovely refurbished green. Well done again to those who made it possible! Thanks to Victor, John, Brian, Rob and Glyn, along with their team, for all their hard work this winter in installing the new watering system and fence. And they’ve installed a new trophy cabinet in the club room too! Where would we be without you, guys? We had a great Saturday social event when we were challenged by The Lions to a quiz night at the bowls club. It was a full evening’s entertainment with a ploughman’s Supper half way through, a raffle and big money prizes. Well done to Alan Greenway for putting together such a varied and fun quiz. Same again next year?

Georgina Osman Independent Candidate For Tetbury with Upton Ward
‘Putting our Community First’
Local District Elections – May 2nd It’s important now, more than ever, to vote in the local elections. The services the District Council provide have a great impact on our town and our day-to-day lives; this election is our opportunity to push for changes and improvements which will benefit the town. The three-priority areas I would like to focus on are: Community: Improving our Youth Provision, School Holiday Day-care, Foodbank, Elderly Day-care and Loneliness. Highway Matters: Speeding, Parking and Potholes on our Roads and Pavements. Town Improvements: Leisure Facilities, Street Cleaning and Dog Fouling. I’ve been at the heart of the community, working with Tetbury Town Council and Cotswold District Council for over eleven years; I’ve helped shape the town and surrounding areas in many ways - I know I could bring that experience to bear as your local District Councillor. Cotswold Voluntary Wardens times and second only to London in importance, placed as it was on a strategic crossroads on the Fosse Way. Tetbury and Malmesbury, with their ‘bury’ endings are Saxon names. ‘Bury’ is a corruption of ‘burh’ which means ‘hill fort’ or ‘fortified place.’ We have worked at Wotton this month – a place blessed with a name which just means ‘Wool town under the Cotswold edge.’ We’ve been carrying out further enhancements to the community amenity area on the site of Holywell Mill. It’s a nice location by the stream at the edge of the town on the Cotswold Way, and it now has more hedges and trees, seats and a millstone set into the remains of the mill wall.
Local Walks in May:
Not Dursley! A correction to last months report! The dry stone wall we are working on at the moment is at the request of the Duchy Estate, so on Prince Charles’ land near the Trouble House – not “Dursley” as was printed in the April issue. We have returned there again for more walling in the past month. I wouldn’t want any readers to worry that Dursley is trying to take over our Tetbury countryside! *
What’s in a Name? Many of our community names date way back to the Dark Ages. The names ‘Tetbury’ and ‘Dursley’ originate from Saxon times. Lots of places end with ‘ley’ locally – which meant ‘field’ in Saxon times, as of course
‘lea’ still does. ‘Dur’ and similar, I’m told, meant ‘wet’ – and indeed it often seems wet when the Wardens go to that area on Stinchcombe Hill or Coaley Peak. You can see the approaching storms being driven up the Severn Vale by the prevailing southwesterly winds. Gloucester, by reputation, is even wetter: “Doctor Foster went to Gloucester, in a shower of rain. He stepped in a puddle right up to his middle – and never went there again.” Names ending in ‘chester’ or ‘cester’ mean ‘military camp’ – like Frocester, were we have installed stiles and gates for the footpaths. Frocester is on the Roman road to the River Severn crossing at Arlingham. Cirencester was very important in Roman
Circular walks lead by the Wardens in May are: • Sunday the 5th of May at 10.00 am from the Old Lodge Inn on Minchinhampton Common for 7 miles via Amberley, stopping to eat your picnic lunch at Nailsworth before the steep climb back via Box village. • Thursday the 9th of May at 10.00 from the Hunter’s Hall at Kingscote for 5 miles via Bagpath. • Friday the 10th of May at 10.00 am from Stinchcombe Hill public car park beyond the Golf Club for 6 miles to Stinchcombe Village and back up the hill. • Friday the 24th of May at 10.00 am for coffee at the King’s Head pub café at Kings Stanley, departing at 10.30 am for 5.5 miles via the Cotswold Way up to Coaley Peak, returning via Leonard Stanley. Leighterton Primary School
Mr Clark talked about the tractor he brought in too… and we drew it
Our Reception children in Apsemore Class have a firstrate start to school life at Leighterton Primary School. They have a new, purpose built classroom, with an integral toilet area and an attached outside learning environment. The classroom is large and airy and when our bi-fold doors are open, both inside and outside become one large learning space.
Apsemore children are busy, both in and out of school. They have taken part in a multi-skills festival with other Reception classes at Sir William Romney. This was a great opportunity for them to meet children of the same age from other local schools as well as developing their physical skills. They took part in lots of activities, which included throwing, catching, relay and running.
– Bowldown. From here, the children move into Key Stage Two, where they start in Haymead Class and move on to Ridge Class before going to secondary school. All of our classes are named after thickets of trees around Leighterton. The children chose the class names and we think we will be unique as a school with these names.
If you would like to find out more or come and look around Leighterton Primary School, you are very welcome to contact the school office on (01666) 890273 and we would be delighted to show you round at a convenient time. Further information about school is also available on our website - www.leighterton.com Leighterton Primary School
We love mark making outside
Apsemore children also participated in a dance festival with the rest of our school and other local schools. We all travelled on a coach to meet the other schools and performed our dances. Apsemore children joined our Key Stage One children from Bowldown Class to perform together and they were all amazing. Parents were invited to watch the performance back at school too. Our youngest class have been working inside and outside their classroom, and using their new outside learning area. Both inside and outside, the learning environments have been set up so the children can access the various early years curriculum areas independently. We have very small class sizes so that the children benefit from lots of support from both the class teacher and the teaching assistant. This ensures that they all get off to a flying start. At the end of the Reception year, the children move into a Key Stage One class

Eating Out Sometimes one hears about a place and it takes forever to actually get there. This was the scenario with the Thistledown Café at Nympsfield. I’d seen it mentioned, looked it up, then took nearly a year to go. But, in true London Bus style, two visits came along in quick succession! On the first, I was nearby when I persuaded myself I’d earned lunch, so I went to explore. Built with a rustic look, with lots of pine, and wooden furniture, it was very busy and they asked if I’d booked – which, of course, I hadn’t. Luckily a bench table was free, so I sat down and ordered a burger, with ‘cheese, bacon, pickles, sweet mustard and ketchup on a salt bake house brioche bun, salad, slaw and roasted veg’. Given how busy they were, I expected it to take a while but, when two tables who’d arrived after me were served first, I got a little cross. I could see that the waitress had confused my order with the table next to me and that consequently, they got my burger and had to wait for the other person’s pasta, whereas I had to wait even longer. To be fair, when I explained my irritation, staff were extremely apologetic and offered
a free cake – something I hardly needed, because the burger was delicious. Meaty and homemade, with lovely pickles and sides, I began to see why the place was popular. Then, last week, Flossy and I were out when I suggested we visit, so she too could sample their delights. And there are some lovely things on the regularly changing menu (though there are some regulars). Luckily, we arrived before the rush. To start we ordered a large labneh – a middle eastern soft cheese made from strained housemade yogurt - with wild garlic and basil, toasted sourdough, fig and date chutney, pistachio dukkah. We’d never heard of this, so it was a shot in the dark. However, everything about it was lovely: the slightly sour cheese with sharp chutney and crunchy dukkah was wonderful. Then we chose two burgers – one chuck steak, the other a butter bean and thyme,
figuring we’d split them. Both came with celeriac slaw, salad and roasted veg. The speed of service was good this time, and both sorts of burger were very ‘more-ish.’ Unfortunately, there was still one small glitch. As we finished off, we realised no roasted veg had appeared on either plate. Okay, we hadn’t needed any, but we thought it worth pointing out. Once again, staff were hugely apologetic; the chef came out personally to offer us some if we wanted it. They also offered free coffees, which was thoughtful, at least… Situated on a hill that looks over towards Stroud, with a lovely bright conservatory, it’s a great place to spend a sunny lunchtime. There’s loads of room for kids to play and trails to walk. And it won’t break the bank. Even though there were a few ‘hiccups,’ I’m definitely going back to try something else. Fill

During the early Spring we have had two most enjoyable walks in Westonbirt Arboretum, taking advantage of the ‘Bring a Friend’ offer. During our walk in March we saw an impressive array of beautiful Camelias, Rhododendrons and even a Magnolia bursting into bloom. The weather experts are telling us that our Spring this year is
occurring earlier than usual, and it certainly seems to be true. In April we enjoyed a walk around the North Meadow at Cricklade, to see the thousands of Snake’s Head Fritillaries. So far this year our speakers have been both varied and well up to standard. Our March speaker Graham Payne, accompanied by his wife, came to us all the way from Bognor Regis to present a very polished talk entitled “A Trip on the Royal Train.” Graham covered the first journey

Avening WI taken by Prince Albert from Paddington to Slough all the way up to the present day, with some amusing anecdotes about Royal passengers down the years. Our April speaker was Rose Hewlett, who spoke about the history of our houses and how we may find out information about them from deeds, censuses, Parish Records and from the County Archives. It was really interesting to look at just a few of the examples Rose had studied - and at the detailed information she had discovered. Our skittling ladies have been practising their aim at two friendly meetings in the Social Club, in preparation for the first round of the County Competition against Upton St. Leonards at the end of April. And our plans to take part in ‘walking netball’ are also taking shape. Kelsie from Kemble WI is taking a course to learn all about it and Nailsworth WI have also expressed an interest in taking part in the new sport. Four ladies attended the Gloucestershire Federation AGM in Cheltenham Town Hall and we were thrilled that one of our members had her name read out as the top prize winner of the ‘200 Club.’ The principal speaker was Dr Helen Pankhurst CBE, great granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst whose work is recognised as crucial to achieving women’s suffrage. Helen has herself spent her career promoting equal opportunities for women. A good crowd attended our WI village quiz, held at the Social Club on the 5th of April. Brains were taxed and thirsts quenched at the bar. A hearty ploughman’s supper was tucked into at half time and our members donated lots of raffle prizes. Proceeds from the quiz are being donated to Longfield in memory of our member Eileen Ind, who was a volunteer at the Minchinhampton shop. Our summer outing this year will be to the amazing Hillier’s Gardens near Romsey on the 19th of June, when the gardens should be at their best. Last - I am very glad to be back to writing my report, after having been absent to have a knee replacement operation. Many thanks to my colleagues for sharing Avening WI news so well, meantime. News from Christ Church
For me, diversity within a larger unity is a strong position, rather than a weak one. I believe this reflects the diversity within the larger unity of the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each Gospel casts a slightly different light on Jesus and they do not agree on every detail, although - and this illustrates my point - some Christians will disagree with me on that!
As churches in Tetbury, we work together whenever we can. Our grouping is called ‘Tetbury and Area Churches Together’ – so ‘TACT’ for short. All the churches in Tetbury are represented on this: Christ Church Methodist and United Reformed Church, Five Valleys Christian Fellowship, St Marys’ Church of England and St Michael’s Roman Catholic Church. We don’t always agree about everything, but that’s OK. I think that God has enabled different traditions and perspectives to grow in the church. Our diversity can be a
strength as long as we love one another, and respect and honour each other, and in Tetbury there is this strong united spirit between the churches.
We offer a professional and reliable cleaning service for your: • Windows - inside and outside • Window sills • Fascias and gutters • Conservatories • Solar Panels

TACT works together on the Lent lunches at St Michael’s. We worship together on Palm Sunday and on Good Friday and are also jointly visiting the new housing areas, giving new arrivals in the town a pack which informs people about the activities in all the churches. We organise Holiday at Home together and the ‘iSing Pop’ Sunday afternoons at St Mary’s school have come about through churches working together. This month another TACT initiative is the joint Christian Aid and Cafod Service at 6.00 pm at St Michael’s on Sunday the 12th of May. Christian Aid is the global development branch of the mostly Protestant churches - and Cafod is the global development arm of the Catholic Church. On that day we will celebrate what God is doing across the world to bring bread, water, shelter, clothing, health, education, dignity and hope for the future to all God’s people. With every blessing, Noel Sharp, Minister of Christ Church Tetbury

CDC local election is about bins – not BREXIT While all the political shenanigans continue at Westminster, your Conservative representatives in Tetbury continue to work hard for our town and the Cotswolds as a whole. In addition to everything we already collect, from November 2019 Cotswold District Council (CDC) will be increasing your kerbside recycling collections to include small electrical equipment, textiles and cartons, meaning we collect more recycling from your kerbside than almost any other district council in the country.
independent organisation. We will continue to work as hard to keep council tax as low as possible while maintaining fantastic services.
Cllr Maggie Heaven
CDC is also investing over £500,000 in a fleet of new waste collection vehicles and £180,000 in new recycling receptacles a new larger food caddy which has an animal proof lock so it can be kept outdoors. From November 2019 we will be asking you to separate your food waste from your garden waste and your food waste will be collected weekly. This is so we can send our food waste to anaerobic digestion plants which convert the material to methane which in turn is used to generate green electricity which can be sold to the national grid. A much more environmentally friendly solution than we currently operate. We continue to fight hard to support our high street and local businesses. CDC has extended its “Free After 3pm” parking scheme to encourage visitors to our high street throughout the entire day. We continue to offer grant support to the Tetbury Tourist Information Office and are working extremely hard to communicate the governments business rates discount scheme for small-sized high street properties in England which have a rateable value below £51,000. We are doing everything within our mandate to support our amazing local shops and businesses. Cotswold District Council has the 11th lowest council tax rate in the country, and the district council is ranked the 2nd most efficient council in the country by an

Our CDC councillors continue to work hard to provide grants for defibrillators across our district, with new devices located at Preston Park, Shipton Moyne The Goods Shed, Long Newnton, Kingscote, Didmarton and Cherrington. Our CDC councillors also continue working to improve youth services across our area. A new town twinning relationship has been set up with Chatillion-Sur-Indre so young people of Tetbury can experience a different culture. Cllr Maggie Heaven has secured a grant from CDC financially supporting Avonvale football club at Shipton Moyne and renovations for their clubhouse, Cllr Richard Morgan secured a CDC grant for a new youth club in Avening and Cllr Stephen Hirst has obtained another grant to support Tetbury Youth Club. We are pleased to confirm that Cllr Maggie Heaven will again be standing again for Tetbury East & Rural, Cllr Stephen Hirst will again be standing for Tetbury Town and we have a new excellent local candidate Richard Norris standing for Tetbury & Upton. Many people will know Richard from his years of dedication to Tetbury Town Football Club and the recent twinning with the French town of Châtillon sur Indre. Cllr Richard Morgan will stand in Grumbolds Ash with Avening. Tetbury Conservatives are a friendly bunch of people who are motivated to make Tetbury and the Cotswolds an amazing place to live and work. If you would like to join us, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We have a fantastic social event planned for 11 May where Chippenham MP Michelle Donelan is coming to Tetbury to tell us all the latest news from Westminster so please let us know if you would like to attend.

The Feoffees and the Thirteen who are new to the town or have never attended before, this is a ‘free of charge’ community event, an opportunity to meet your friends old and new and enjoy a burger or hotdog – just bring a blanket, chair, drinks and yourselves – everyone is welcome and we look forward to meeting you all there. Beating of the Bounds – The annual walking of the boundaries of the town, followed by the presentation of our annual accounts.
May is a busy month here in Tetbury… …and I would like to start by wishing the organisers of Wacky Races and Woolsack Day all the best for successful events. Meantime, the Market Hall redecoration has begun, and we are doing our very best to keep any inconvenience caused to a minimum. However, if you are experiencing problems, please let us know. Recently Thirteen member Nikki Ind and our Clerk Alison Mackay were pleased to attend the opening of the Children’s Zone at Tetbury Library, after the recent refurbishment. The Feoffee were pleased
to be able to give a grant to the library for this refurbishment, which is a valuable community asset and used by residents of all ages. The new sofa is already being put to good use by the younger members of our community! Grass Keep – does anyone wish to apply for the grass keep in Preston Park? Due to the nature of users – Dog Walkers, Runners, Families – this probably suits cattle best. If you are interested, please contact Feoffee Will Cook.

Tetbury Theatre Group We had a good journey down to Bristol for our March trip, arriving early so we could have a wander along the Bristol Water front, visiting one of the many cafes and having a leisurely drink. We were going to The Hippodrome to see “Annie,” which is a terrific musical. I am sure most people know the story of Annie, who was in an orphanage when she was discovered singing and selected to appear on a radio show, where ‘Daddy’ Warbucks then announced that he would give 50,000 US dollars to the couple who can prove they are Annie’s parents. Several couples arrived to claim the money of course, including Lily and Rooster relatives of Miss Hannington, matron of the orphanage. They really only have the money in mind – but the story does have a happy ending… Anita Dobson played Miss Hannington and was just right for the part. She was very brash and amazingly fit. Belying the fact that she’s over seventy she did lots of dancing. Since this was the matinee performance, she would be doing the same routines again in the evening!
The children were very good, loud and enthusiastic, and it was lovely to watch their faces - especially the younger ones. They were aged between eight and eleven, so really very young, but really enjoying every moment. The Bristol Hippodrome is a lovely theatre. It opened in 1912 and its architect was Frank Matcham. When the weather is dry and hot it has the benefit of an opening roof - which is most unusual - and it seats just under two thousand people, so generates an excellent atmosphere. Later in April we are going to Oxford and in May we see Calendar Girls at the Millennium Theatre in Cardiff. On the 5th of June we are again visiting the lovely town of Malvern for a day trip and seeing ‘Mindgames.’ On
the 24th of July it is our annual outing and we will be going around Bristol harbour, then on to Avon Valley Railway. Details of our trips later in the year are all on our website. Members will have all details mailed or posted to them – but please note, they do NOT necessarily come in chronological order, since some tickets we have to pay for much earlier than others. If you are interested in joining our group, in joining the coach for any of these destinations, or if you have any other queries, please contact our membership secretary Diana Challis on 01666 502768 Celia Bayes, Tetbury Theatre Group

Acclaimed pianist William Howard brought us some beautiful and romantic piano music and we enjoyed diverse Jazz offering from the Brubeck Project and Class Act. Our afternoon tea concerts are proving really very popular and provide the opportunity for people to come out, meet friends, have a chat over a cup of tea and enjoy some music to boot. Will Cook has been the driving force behind these afternoons, and we are grateful to him and the musicians who give their time and talent for free.

The youngsters that make up the Corinium Players Guitars Ensemble went down a storm and our Open Mic sessions bring along a wealth of local performers. A big thank you to Heather Bristow for organising these Open Mic nights. Due to public demand, we ran the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ again, as part of our Thursday cinema evenings and a great crowd turned up once more, for a night of rock and nostalgia. We said “Goodbye!” to Bath Textiles Artists and “Hello!” to local artist Peter Unsworth recently; he launched his exhibition “Distant Views” with a well-attended Private Viewing, and his paintings are now on show at the Goods Shed until the 27th of May. As always, we are grateful to our valuable, enthusiastic and supportive volunteers, upon whom we rely to put on all these events and happenings. Do get in touch if you want to join our team! Opportunities range from running events, helping in the Café, looking after artists, managing the box office or working behind the scenes on our Thursday evening cinema showings. Finally, I’ve just space to tell you we have changed our address – although locally, people know how to visit us, too many visitors from further afield were getting stuck at the bottom of Gumstool Hill – so officially we are now Tetbury Goods Shed Arts Centre, Old Station Yard, Cirencester Road, Tetbury GL8 8EY. As Scouts, we believe in preparing young people with skills for life. We bring communities together and contribute to society. Above all, we aim to build better futures. Last month I wrote about our new attendees at the Scout Group; this month it is the turn of our leavers. The Beavers are saying goodbye to six members who are turning eight years old, and we hope that they will be able to enjoy their time at Cubs as soon as space becomes available. We have also said goodbye to three of our older Scouts, who have reached the end of their time with us. They have all been members of the troop for many exciting years and will be missed by everybody. We wish them all the best with their future
Tetbury Scout Group
pursuits and hope that Scouts have provided them with some useful skills for life! The Beavers have had an ‘egg’cellent time (!) this month with a trip to the police museum, a beautiful evening at St Mary’s Forest School creating cards and gifts for Mother’s Day, and an Easter egg rolling competition. Our thanks to everyone who gave up their time to make the visit to the police museum so enjoyable. With summer arriving, the Cubs headed out for their first outdoor night of the year. Enjoying the weather, they played many rounds of ‘Capture the Flag’ at the Goods Shed. Each team tried their very hardest to evade capture and hunt down the opponent and their flag - a frisbee in this case. Over the last few weeks the Scouts have been cooking pancakes and building a missile projector from bamboo canes. We ended the term with a game of Cluedo,
running around the district campsite at Penn Wood. Well done to Harry for being the first to solve the mystery, winning himself an Easter egg. The Scouts are now looking forward to spending most of the next terms meetings outside as the nights get lighter and warmer. The annual ‘Jambowlree’ at Stroud bowl saw all three sections, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, joined together for an evening of fun and entertainment. Everyone, including the leaders, participated in multiple rounds of bowling. They not only had great fun but also participated in a worldwide bowling tournament. It was a fun-filled evening for everyone. Tom Glover, Group Scout Leader gsl@tetburyscoutgroup.org.uk
COULD YOUR ORGANISATION BENEFIT FROM A TOWN COUNCIL GRANT? TETBURY TOWN COUNCIL HAS APPROVED A NEW GRANTS POLICY. For 2019/20, the Council will operate a system whereby Grants may be applied for in two ‘windows’ during the year. The first window for applying will be 1st June to 30th June – with decisions to be made on 22nd July. The second window for applying will be 1st November to 30th November – with decisions to be made at the end of January. When considering the applications received, the Council will give the highest priority to its ongoing commitment of paying ‘strategic’ grants to the Dolphins Hall, the Youth Club and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau each year. Funding for ‘minor grants’ is not guaranteed, being dependent on the funding remaining after the Council’s Strategic Grants have been paid/committed. Minor grants are intended to provide ‘one off’ funding, rather than to be an ongoing commitment by the Council. Recipients of a minor grant last year will be declined assistance in 2019/20. No other grant funding shall be issued outside the above process UNLESS the Council agrees that it is the only possible sourcing of funding for an essential town organisation at risk of ceasing to function OR that an important town event would be at risk without the Council stepping in. This caveat should not be used by applicants who have missed the application window. Organisations wishing to apply for a grant should contact the Town Council Offices for an application form.

Optimum Mobility
Genuine advice and best value from the local specialist
With the blossom on the trees and sine we continue to celebrate spring with the children,
* Wheelchairs, manual and powered * Scooters and portable scooters * Powered rise/recline armchairs * Household, bathroom and walking aids * Large display with private test area * Disabled facilities, easy parking * Proper maintenance * Part exchange, new & reconditioned * Adaptations
it is a poignant time to reflect on the sad passing of a former colleague recently, Sandie Pithie, who contributed greatly to the playgroup for many years. Thank you, Sandie. Before the Easter holidays, the pre-school children had a visit from Poppy the vicar, she spent the morning joining in with the children’s Easter craft, the children really enjoyed the visit. So, we would like to thank Poppy for giving up her time to spend it with us. On the last day of term, we had an Easter egg hunt, raffle and cake sale, we had a good turn out and parents were very generous. As with all money raised it will towards improving our setting and buying new resources for the children.

During the Easter holidays the new blinds were put up, they make our new windows look smart and will be great for keeping the sun out of the children’s eyes, when we do get it! Planting has started in the garden, so far, we have some herbs, and over the coming weeks we will be adding to the garden. Our next big project inside is new flooring and improving the children’s toilet area.

Try Tetbury Hardware First before you travel, remember we are your store and we can deliver locally.
The children are continuing to measure rainfall using rain catchers. The homemade rain catchers are made from a plastic bottle cut in half, with the top half inserted upside-down into the bottom part. We mark the catcher with lines and number each line, then the children can see how much water has fallen via the markings. The activity will then lead on to some of the children recording the numbers and some using the water to irrigate our plants. Thus, we cover capacity, number recognition, mark-making and knowledge and understanding of the world. *

Sir William Romneys School It was an absolute pleasure to watch our ‘whole school’ production of Annie. Not only were students enjoying the pleasure of performing but they were also typifying the qualities that we believe are so important as a school community; aspiration, resilience, collaboration and confidence. Throughout this term students across the school have enjoyed participating in a wide range of extracurricular activities, ranging from theatre trips, world book day and the French Spelling Bee, to STEM visits to Renishaw.
Many students displayed both confidence and aspiration in our inaugural SWR ‘Arts Star’ Award, showcasing their diverse and often spectacular talents. The final was streamed live to the whole school on Twitter and it was a tense final. Our girls’ netball teams have enjoyed participating in a wide range of fixtures and a PGL residential; congratulations to our Year 9 girls’ team that finished third, only losing to the eventual winners of the tournament, and to both our year 7 and 8 teams who displayed great collaboration and sporting behaviour, too. A special mention must also go to our year 7 boys’ football team, who finished second in a district tournament. An even more stunning achievement, since our team had not reached the finals for over sixteen years! In December the Archery
SWRS Social Spaces The SWR Social Spaces Project is really moving forward: we have fabulous designs for our external communal area, including new seating in a tranquil and inviting alfresco eating area. If you want to know more about how you can get involved, or to see the fantastic designs, follow the links on the SWR school site. This inspiring project will enrich the everyday lives of all our students. To support this project, we are organising a Charity Auction with some amazing lots and a cheese and wine tasting on the 3rd of May. You can obtain tickets from Tetbury Hardware, the school office, or email to register at socialspaces@swr.gloucs.sch.uk Silent bids will be accepted in advance by email or just bring a completed bid slip to the school. The full list of lots is available on the school’s website and Facebook page. We hope that you can join us, so that this exciting vision for the school can become a reality! The Open Spaces Committee, Sir William Romney’s School
team attended a district competition; it was very close with the leader changing several times. They got to the semi-final and took fourth place against teams who have weekly clubs, despite training only in a six-week block. Most of the team are year 10, and the students displayed a very mature attitude. World Book Day was a wonderfully memorable and exciting day, with students and staff getting fully involved and dressing up. Characters ranged from Hagrid to the Joker and form Epos the Flame Bird to the Lorax and Lady Lavinia. We held a ‘Get Caught Reading’ campaign; staff were pictured on ski slopes, up mountains, on beaches and even in an organ. Students were seen reading on a horse, underwater, and at Tetbury’s Police Museum. A group of year 10 students were recently treated to a ‘Food Chemistry Workshop’ by local company Taste Connection; following an introduction to the chemistry behind our perception of taste, students were able to take part in some practical investigations. Another group from year 8 and 9 visited Avening Playgroup, so their children could meet the students who had designed and painted three large murals which now form a great display on the outside wall of the playgroup building. The children had decided on themes of superheroes, nursery rhymes and nature. I am already looking forward to seeing the opportunities offered to students through the course of the summer term and during ‘Enrichment Week.’ Sir William Romney’s School newsletter can be read in full on our website. Here at the museum it’s spring cleaning time, to get the place in shape for the summer. We will be checking our displays for any problems and pests, as well as doing quite a bit of glass cleaning! We have really enjoyed having a few groups visit, especially the Beavers. It would be lovely to see more local people come in; please do bring your friends and relatives to see the museum when they’re visiting our lovely town.

The fire bell was tolled, and the fire engine was quickly brought to bear on the flames, there being a plentiful supply of water. Considerable damage was, however, done (we believe to the amount of upwards of £100,) the machinery was damaged, and gas pipes melted. A heap of coal was on fire, and but for the fortunate circumstance of the conflagration being discovered before it had assumed very large dimensions, the destruction to property must have been very great, The damage is covered by insurance.

Tetbury WI
Our Institute welcomes members from Tetbury and the surrounding villages and we always welcome new members. We are happy to have welcomed several new members over the past months and will be holding an evening reception especially for them on May the 20th. This relaxed event is a good way to for these new members to get to know each other and for the committee to get to know them better too.
The WI is affiliated with the Associated Country Women of the World, the largest International organisation with links to the UN and UNESCO. It aids by empowering women worldwide, with funds given to women directly for specific projects. Supporting women from both rural and urban communities and working collectively for the improvement of the quality of life, relief of poverty and sickness and the advancement of education.
There will be no coffee morning in May as the date falls on a Bank Holiday. Our next Institute meeting is at The Goods Shed on Monday May the 13th at 7.30 pm, when we will hear from Ian Caskie who will tell us about the “SS Great Britain: Launch to relaunch,” a perfectly timed talk, given our planned visit.
Tetbury WI holds an annual collection for this worthy organisation and this year the funds of a raffle will be donated. One of our ladies has crafted the wonderful raffle prize; “Linda’s Lambs” are now happily in their new home with our member Pauline.
The Supper/Lunch Club held another successful event, with a trip to No. 65 on Long Street. Eighteen of our ladies had an evening with lots of laughter and smashing food! The next Supper Club event will be in May, with lunch at the Trouble House. This annual visit always proves popular with our members. Jan has been busy with plans for a trip to the SS Great Britain in June, a bus will take our members to Bristol to enjoy a tour on board, with time for some lunch and shopping, too. The celebrations of our 50th anniversary continue with plans well underway for the Group meeting in June. We will be joined by Avening WI and Kemble and Ewen WI at the Goods Shed for a special evening with supper and a guest speaker to entertain us. Our Gala Dinner later in the year will also form part of the yearlong celebrations for our Institute.

At our April meeting we enjoyed “Tales from the Turf,” a talk given by Peter McNeile, the events manager for Andoversford Point to Point, this funny and fascinating talk on Steeplechase in the UK, also gave due respect to the Irish trainers and punters who inject some quality horses and fun into the sport.

The organisers of the exhibition want to encourage children and adults to take great shots, and to show them here. So much is possible in a photograph: a story, a moment, a look – and anyone anywhere can take a good “shot” and apply. There are six categories, and the photographs should relate to these categories. They are: “On our Doorstep,” “Further Afield,” “My Family and other Animals,” “Water,” “Capturing the Character,” and “Wildlife.”

orthopaedic consultant but will refer you to the Musculoskeletal Triage Service (MSKAPS). The triage team will assess your condition and decide on the correct course of action, which may include physiotherapy, X-ray, review of medication, injection therapy, a pain management referral or an orthopaedic referral. Our NHS physiotherapy services at the hospital are delivered by Gloucestershire Care Services on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. You can self-refer by picking up a referral form from our physiotherapy department, or by using the information on our website to telephone or refer online. Private appointments are also available by telephoning 01666 501773. If an X-ray is required, we can also do this for you, and since there are no waiting lists for our X-ray department, very often you can be seen the same day. Once you have been referred all you have to do is telephone our X-ray department on 01666 501771 and agree a suitable appointment. If the triage team refer you to see an orthopaedic consultant, you can certainly still have an appointment at Tetbury hospital for hand and wrist, foot and ankle, knee, hip, spinal and pain management. Remember, as an NHS patient it is your right to choose - so ask the triage team for your appointment to be at Tetbury Hospital! We also carry out many orthopaedic procedures in our day surgery unit, which means that in some cases all your care can be delivered close to home. I am excited to report that in the near future we will be offering an even wider range of orthopaedic procedures; I’ll be sure to keep you updated as this progresses.
