Young by Name Why I’m Learning Latin From an early age, I counted myself as a traveller. Born in an era when most British families took holidays in their own country, and only one a year, usually in the summer, I had a fortunate head start at the tender age of eight.

An American Road Trip My father’s job as a computer engineer required that he spend a year in the USA, and he took the whole family with him – my mum, my older brother and sister, and me. Initially posted to Philadelphia, he was asked after a month to relocate to Los Angeles. My father’s natural sense of adventure had been nurtured by his earlier service with the Royal Navy, including two years during the Korean War on HMS Belfast, now a museum on the Thames. He negotiated swapping our expenses-paid plane tickets for petrol, and so began our great American road trip in the family car. Our scenic route was designed to take in world-famous, memorable landmarks such as Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone Park and Las Vegas. Before I turned nine, I had seen more of the US than many American adults.

The Railways of Europe His subsequent posting to Germany during my last four years of high school saw me hopping on and oﬀ trans-European railways in my school holidays, a confident solo traveller. Only recently, as my own teenage daughter started travelling abroad independently, did my parents reveal that they were much less insouciant about my train trips than I was.

picture. Our English language has of course been enriched by many more tongues since the Romans left English soil, via immigrants, invaders and imported texts. Whatever happens politically in the next few months, nothing can take away our rich linguistic culture. Every time I pick up my pen, I celebrate our long heritage of the blending of Anglo Saxon with French, German, Greek, Latin and many more European languages.

In adulthood, I have made countless journeys abroad, not only for pleasure. Business trips have taken me as far afield as Hong Kong and the Caribbean. Yet now, with the likelihood of trans-European travel becoming less straightforward post Brexit, coupled with concern for my carbon footprint, my appetite for foreign jaunts is waning.

A World of Languages Therefore, my recent decision to start learning more foreign languages may seem incongruous. I already have some French and German from my schooldays and a little tourist Greek from evening classes, which for many people might seem plenty. But when my daughter introduced me to Duolingo, a free app that makes learning another language fun, she sparked a latent desire. The languages oﬀered by this app are not only the obvious ones from the school curriculum. Hankering after Hawaiian? Keen on Klingon? Duolingo has those too. I’m starting with Latin, because I’ve long wanted to have a better grasp of the roots of English. But Latin is only a small part of the

Lion’s Den Laurence Binyon’s poem ‘For the Fallen,’ which includes those immortal lines “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old …” always aﬀects me, capturing as it does their enormous sacrifice. Toward the end of November, several of our Lions went back to help celebrate the anniversary of the opening of Avening’s Village Café. We donated toward their facilities last year and we’re delighted that they’ve made such a success of what’s now a very busy social hub for the village. Do pop in for a visit – they’re a fantastically welcoming bunch.

I reported last month that our ‘Big Lions Quiz’ at the Great Tythe Barn was a roaring success… …(yes, that’s a Lions’ pun!) – and I can now announce that the quiz raised £1,144.80 for charitable causes. An astonishingly good sum! The Great Tythe Barn was packed to the rafters and the atmosphere was wonderful. Notwithstanding all the fun we had, the main reason for organising these events is to raise money - and we simply could not have done that so successfully without the huge generosity of the Tythe Barn, the Wotton and District Silver Band

and Quiz Master Leslie Taylor. (Leslie is a wonderful and cheerful character, even if our photograph doesn’t capture the fact!) Thank you to all of them, and to all those who came and competed. A final huge “Thank you!” to Lion Penny for making it all happen. Simply wonderful! On Remembrance Day I was very proud to attend the service at St Marys’ Church. The church was packed, and the service a very moving aﬀair. I then led a large contingent of Lions in the parade through town to St Saviour’s Church, to lay a wreath at the war memorial. Tetbury residents turned out in their hundreds to join a very fitting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in one of the two World Wars, or in other conflicts since. I have to say the words of

And just when we thought we might draw breath in preparation for Christmas, along came an opportunity too good to miss! Our club was given the chance to dig up as many Christmas trees as we could handle – to pot and prepare for sale. We rallied the troops and between spells of horrendous weather, dug up and potted over two hundred trees. Huge thanks to Dan Bailey Building Contractors for supplying a digger to make the back-breaking work much easier, Miller Homes for a supply of top soil and the Westonbirt Ground Crew for additional labour.

Why buy a new PC when your old one could be running just fine, saving you money and also helping to save the planet? Hardware requirements for Windows 10 have not really changed since 7 was released, so many computers can be upgraded without having to shell out for new kit. If you have a minimum of 3GB RAM and a hard disk with at least 50GB of free space, then you should be ready to go.

Chelworth Bookworms the rumours of a rebel organisation, the Brotherhood, really exist. Quite unexpectedly, a girl declares her love for him, and they begin an illicit aﬀair. Whilst dangerous to arrange, their meetings bring some joy to his life, even though he knows that the relationship cannot last and that ultimately, it is doomed. When he is eventually contacted by the Brotherhood, this is the trigger for his arrest. ‘1984’ is an uncomfortable read - and although at times it can feel like a political thesis, it certainly makes you think. Despite being written shortly after the end of WWII, there are many scenes that sound uncomfortably similar to things that have since happened. Is Alexa really listening to us, just like the telescreens? Is the media being manipulated to create ‘fake news’? Is the situation in North Korea a real-life example of total state control and the enforced worship of the leader? Prophetic in so many ways, we can recognise many references that have been incorporated into everyday language: Room 101 and even Big Brother himself have evolved into being part of popular culture. Perhaps Orwell just got the date wrong? Merry Christmas!

Tetbury Goods Shed and Raillands Trust On December the 2nd 1889, Tetbury town was “en fête.”

Most shops were closed for the day, there were flags, bunting, marching bands, processions and triumphal arches. And why? Because after years of campaigning, Tetbury had at last got a station - and this was the day the first steam train would leave the station on the new branch line to Kemble. Hundreds of people turned out to watch.

This December it will be 130 years since that first steam train left. To celebrate that event, and the end of a Heritage Lottery project, Tetbury Goods Shed is holding a special evening event showcasing the history of the Branch line. The line was closed in April 1964 as a result of the Beeching cuts.

As part of the Heritage Lottery award a 15-minute film has been made, with local people recounting their memories of using the line. These memories range from stories of the Maharajah of Jaipur using the line to bring his polo ponies down to play at Cirencester, to the men who worked on the train and the school children who used it.

As well as premiering the film, there will be an exhibition by the History of Tetbury Society showing some of their archive material from across the years – including pictures of the first steam train and the festive arches put up in the town in 1889 to celebrate that first train. It’s also hoped to bring to life archive newspaper reports of that day; the event was also celebrated with some really bad poetry! Tetbury Model Railway Society will also be there, and they hope to be able to exhibit their finished model of the station yard.

Brash (rubble) has been used to construct a ramp back down to the railbed so users can continue along the Trail to the Trouble House. Mayor’s Report The Autumn has continued to be busy in the town, and with Christmas preparations now well under way I am looking forward to the Festive Season and to seeing many of you out and about in the town and at events taking place. The Tetbury Christmas Light Switch On is on Friday the 6th of December, starting with a Christmas Lantern Parade from St Mary’s Church at 5.40 pm, followed by Community Carols at The Market House with representatives from local schools and youth organisations. I’ll be switching on the lights myself, accompanied by the student from St Mary’s Primary School who won the art competition. There will be late night shopping, stalls, children’s Christmas Crafts in The Market House - and of course Santa’s Grotto. Please do come and enjoy an evening of festive cheer and please note that Church Street, (from The Market House to St Mary’s Church,) will be closed from 3.00 pm to 8.00 pm. I recently took part in the ‘Big Daily Mile’ with the children from St Mary’s School – lapping the running track. I’d intended to power walk, but the children persuaded me that I really needed to speed up! I was heartened by their enthusiasm, not only for this daily exercise, but their interest in what a Mayor does and how the Town Council works just like their School Council. I think I spied some budding Councillors of the future! I have also recently attended the ‘Greening Tetbury’ meeting - and the Town Council Working Group for Climate Strategy are going to work in partnership with them, to define and develop plans and projects for our town. Finally, I attended the recent Business Meeting at Steepleton, to discuss the idea of a Tetbury Loyalty Card, with Councillors Painter and Hirst and representatives from the Visitor Information Centre and local businesses. Eating Out The run up to Christmas is a good time for surprises and this month revealed another hidden gem. A while back, we went with friends to a restaurant we’d never heard of, let alone visited, so it seemed best to revisit Giuseppe’s at Nailsworth to see if it really is as good as we first thought. The answer? A definitive ‘Yes’! Our first visit saw us struggle to find the entrance, there being no helpful internet images of the outside. But, down an alley full of outdoor ‘objets,’ (I think due to a branch of Domestic Science being there,) we went up some metal stairs and ‘Voilà!’ Or whatever the Italian equivalent may be.* We entered past the bar and through a lounge area into what is, eﬀectively, a rustically decorated loft with white emulsioned walls, simple furniture and no more than thirty-odd covers. Everything on the menu, which changes every week, is freshly prepared and delicious-sounding! Of course, second time around, we knew where to go - and what to expect.

When I called, Giuseppe told me he was fully-booked and, he said, he doesn’t like to do double-sittings, because he wants to allow customers time to relax, enjoy their food and their evening - a rare and welcome attitude these days. However, since he seemed to remember us from before, he said if we were happy to finish by eight then he’d be happy to grant an early table.

Over the two visits we’ve sampled a range of quality starters: simple, fresh mozzarella salad, antipasto misto – a scrumptious plate of the finest, thinly sliced Italian cured meats - beautifully cooked scallops, and Giuseppe’s favourite from home, ‘pipi, patate and salsiccia’, which is a heartwarming Calabrian plate of fried potatoes, peppers and Italian sausage, with a touch of chilli if desired. To follow, Flossy had cod loin in ‘guazzetto’ - a tomato, wine and fish stock sauce – both times, because it was so good the first time, the fish being moist and flaky and the sauce finely balanced. On visit one, I had a perfectly cooked, light pasta whose name I’ve forgotten, covered in a wonderful, deep-flavoured ragu sauce. On the second, I splashed out on fillet steak with dolcelatte, which was far and away the most expensive dish… but absolutely divine! The meat was as soft as butter and the melted blue cheese oozed irresistibly over the edges. Followed by desserts such as profiteroles with amaretto ice cream, espresso pannacotta or ‘torta della nonna’ - a smooth, lemony kind of custard tart - we felt we’d been treated to some of the finest cooking in the area. The well-chosen wine list is small – just two or three of each colour – and overall, for three courses with wine, it’s not cheap. However, with a lovely atmosphere, your table for the whole evening, such excellent food and Giuseppe’s wife as the friendly, helpful and very welcoming host, I have to say Giuseppe’s really is a rare treat that’s well worth the money. It’s that time of year – when the committee change hats! We are fortunate to have a splendid and hardworking party of ladies running our WI, who have lots of ideas for activities throughout the year. Our members, in return, support the committee by contributing to the happy and relaxed atmosphere at our meetings. They are always willing to contribute homemade goodies to help with our catering and do the washing up. But! “Rules are rules,” and we do have to make changes.

Our President, Gwyneth, has served for five years and is stepping down. Our ‘Bite to Eat’ chief, Liz, has been persuaded to take her place, although we hope she will still oversee the catering, with lots of help. I am bowing out as Treasurer, after so many years I don’t want to think about it! The job will now move into the modern world. Much to the disgust of the banks, small organisations still rely on cheques and, dare I say it, cash! Avening WI usual homemade cakes. We sold lots of cards for the Cobalt Trust and we were able to show the display that we had created for the cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral. Many WI’s took part in the events at the Cathedral, making it very interesting for visitors that weekend. Three WI members attended the service on the Saturday morning, and I understand the singing of Jerusalem was amazing! Sadly, we recently had to provide food for the wake of another of our members, Irene Viveash, who had served as secretary many years ago, as well as working hard for the Tetbury ‘Meals on Wheels’ service. The Village Quiz was well attended, and Derrick was kept busy in the bar at the Social Club. The buﬀet supper was soon demolished at half time! The raﬄe prizes donated by members were splendid and we raised over £200 for Longfield Hospice. We have created a lovely planter, filled with plants and bulbs, which has been placed in the centre of the village by the main road and will look stunning all year round. The speaker at our Annual Meeting entitled his talk ‘A Gloucestershire Christmas’, which put us in the mood for the many WI activities planned for next month. As usual, there was a collection for the Stroud Food Bank. Several ladies joined the Federation Christmas Shopping event at John Lewis and lots of people are coming on our visit to Stratford upon Avon at the end of the month, for the Christmas Market. 2020 looks very busy for Avening WI as it is our 90th birthday and we already have a visit planned to Charlton Down House garden arranged for the spring! History of Tetbury Society ‘Stand and Deliver!’ was projected onto the screen, as we arrived at HOTS on the 8th of November. John Putley, from the Archives Dept., stood and delivered some very interesting facts about ‘Highwaymen and Highway Robbery in Gloucestershire.’ The mental picture many of us have of a masked man armed with a flintlock pistol and riding a fast horse, lying in wait to hold up a coach and horses, is almost certainly wrong. Guns were available because they were ‘left over’ from a recent war, but once fired, they had to be reloaded. This meant ramming a new gunpowder charge and shot down the barrel and then re-priming the firing point and resetting the hammer. Not fast. Moreover, they only had a short range and could go oﬀ ‘half cock’ injuring the owner, so a gun was unlikely to have been the first choice of weapon. A knife or sword were the alternatives and much easier to obtain.

A horse also was unlikely to be used either, since they were expensive to buy and maintain and, whilst the man could cover his face with a bit of cloth, the horse was very recognisable. So the Highway robber was probably a ‘foot-pad’ who would attack an individual he had reason to believe carried coins or tobacco, his principal targets. A

A map of ‘hold ups’ in the county indicated that routes leading towards London were favoured, because travellers could be carrying cash to London. The top of a hill with a good view of the surroundings was favoured, so not surprisingly, Birdlip was often involved! The earliest record is in 1373, when the Gloucester ‘Gang of Three’ were in business. This, of course, was before the Enclosure Acts when there were few fences and gates and more rough hiding places from which to assault passers-by. By the 1700’s there was more travel, though speed was only about seven miles per hour – and by the time of the stage coach, travel was very organised and much more difficult to raid. Pubs were the base from which to operate - and the landlords and barmaids would often assess the money travellers were carrying.

John gave us some names of Gloucestershire Highwaymen - and of a few women. With tongue in cheek he included Tom Long - but admitted that we have no idea how the signpost in the centre of Minchinhampton Common got its name. We know names from court records, because Highway Robbery was a capital oﬀence and hangings were regarded as a public entertainment… It has recently been discovered that the Gloucester gibbet was close to the main road near Over. Ex-soldiers, old servants who had been taught to use guns, young family members of prosperous families and bankrupt tradesmen were all mentioned as people who became ‘Knights of the Road’ – the violent criminals that we call Highwaymen. Our next meeting is our Christmas Social in the Market Hall, for which numbers must be restricted. On the 2nd of January at 7.30 pm in Christ Church we will have an ‘Archive Meeting,’ to which members are encouraged to bring interesting items they’d like to show.

Since I last reported, we’ve also held our Free Picnic on Millennium Green, which took place on a wonderful sunny day in September. It was great to see so many attendees and to have so many people confirm their interest in helping to make Tetbury a greener place.

So, what have ‘Greening Tetbury’ been ‘greening’ since my last report? We’ve thought long and hard about the areas we are dealing with, and we’ve incorporated them into our new logo. Each fold of the umbrella represents one of the five groups in Greening Tetbury, which are: Energy, Minimal Plastic. Food, Transport and Communication. By concentrating our eﬀorts on each discrete area, we can maximise our chances of making an impact. As we explore in groups how we go about making Tetbury greener, we’ve concluded

of your custom. Have a clear-out at home and swap toys with other parents – there are always things that the kids have grown out of or which they’re just no longer using and won’t miss. Presents - give gifts that spread a ‘green’ message when you can – which are recycled and recyclable. Things like water drinking bottles, wax wraps, whole-life shopping bags…

Cards - avoid foil and glitter finishes! These are difficult to recycle. Wrapping Presents – you can use scrap fabric or brown paper that can be saved and used again, and instead of tape use string or ribbon, which can also be recycled. Christmas dinner - only buy, cook and eat what you can. So much food is wasted! News from St Michael’s Church November is the month in the Catholic Church for Holy Souls, (although we remember those who have passed away at every celebration of the Mass,) and during November we remembered those who lost their lives during the two World Wars and in the conflicts since. Fr Philip celebrated a very moving Mass on Remembrance Sunday including laying of a wreath, which he carried in procession to the War Memorial after the service at St Marys’ in the afternoon.

Since I married my first husband, thirty-eight years ago, I too have always displayed a crib in our home and when my husband died eighteen years ago, the crib was the only display that I had. During the past twelve years that I have been with my husband Graham, we too have displayed a crib. All are welcome to attend our Mass on Christmas Eve at 5.00 pm and on Christmas Day at 9.00 am. If you are new to Tetbury, have been away from church for a while, are a regular parishioner on your own, or a couple or a family with children of any age a warm welcome will greet you. Tetbury in Bloom and Tetbury Upton Parish Council for their generous donations. Also to the many residents and traders who have supported us by buying one or more of our hanging baskets or Christmas trees, as well. A special word of thanks must go to the Tetbury Civic Society which, after fifty years of existence, has sadly had to fold due to the lack of active members. We were truly honoured to learn that Tetbury in Bloom was chosen, along with three other organisations within the town, to receive an equal share of the monies left in the Tetbury Civic Society bank account. Our share has already been used to purchase the Spring bulbs needed to supplement those already in the flower beds around the town. Without the financial support we receive, we wouldn’t be able to continue the work we do in making the town look as good as we can for the benefit of everyone and we thank everyone very much indeed.

The Christmas period is now upon us… …and during this time, having dressed the trees that adorn the shop premises and liaised with the contractors regarding the town’s Christmas lights, we take this opportunity to give ourselves a short break from going out twice a week to tend the beds and do various housekeeping jobs. The break isn’t for long though because come the 2nd of January we’ll be back out

taking all the lights OFF the trees again - and putting them in to store for Christmas 2020! At this time of year, we also like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has financially supported us over the past year. My family have produced lawyers without skipping a generation for well over a hundred years - and I have been involved in the practice of law, whether as an employee or employer, for fifty years. My father and grandfather did not tell us much about their wartime service, but they passed down a lot of information about how things were when they were young solicitors. What I was doing in London or Yeovil in 1969 would have been recognisable by my grandfather, who in 1912 was working as a solicitor’s clerk in Shepton Mallett. When I was at law school, I was handed a blue book to study called “Master and Servant,” which was in fact employment law. I was oﬀered employment in Lincoln’s Inn on account of who I knew, rather than because of any innate ability. My son applied for the

same job forty years later and was rejected after psychometric tests, on the basis that that they were looking for company commercial lawyers; ironical because the same firm had built its reputation on the

Things are getting dramatic! The whole school has been focusing on ‘kindness’ this term with national anti-bullying week taking place in midNovember. During the week, each class focused on talking about kindness and respect and took part in activities around these values. Children-in-Need took place at the perfect time during our ‘kindness’ week and children and staﬀ were asked to come into school in sporty clothes to raise money for the event. The School Council led an energetic ‘Pudsey’s Big Work Out’ event!

KS1 children are getting excited about their forthcoming theatre trip to watch ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ starring Michelle Collins and Chris Jarvis, at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon. There are another two trips taking place this term in KS1 too, with the Kestrels visiting the John Moore Museum in Tewkesbury as part of their learning about The Great Fire of London. Meanwhile, the Eagles will be putting on their wellies and waterproofs and going in search of the Gruﬀalo on the trail at Westonbirt. At Leighterton Primary School learning is always fun,

They designed and made flags that they would plant on Mars when they arrived. Before they left, the children did some exercise because astronauts need to be fit and healthy. They did press ups, squats, hurdles and star jumps to start them oﬀ.

and Ridge and Bowldown Classes both started this term with a ‘Wow’ day. Haymead Class began the term with a visit to Caerleon Museum.

After that the children made rockets and carried out scientific investigations to find out how to propel water into space using different materials, such as bicarbonate of soda, energy tablets and effervescent tablets and they concluded that the effervescent tablet together with a half load of water was the most effective.

Ridge Class Ridge Class all came to school dressed ready to travel into space. The costumes were amazing. Some children had bought theirs whilst others had made them. Everybody looked fabulous. When the children got to school, they found out that they would be travelling to Mars for the day and arranged themselves into groups that they would stay with throughout the day.

Another activity was to prepare food to take on the mission. They had to choose from either soy milk or coconut milk and mix it with either plain or vanilla yoghurt, and either cocoa powder or strawberry powder. Each group invented a diﬀerent type of food. Some of these were tastier than others. Each group had to decide which six items to take with them and it was interesting to hear the reasons why each group packed what they did.

Haymead Class On Monday morning Haymead Class went to Caerleon Museum to learn more about the Romans. Everybody felt super excited because we all love going on visits. First, we looked around the main area where there were lots of mannequins dressed as Romans and some people were a little nervous of them. We went to look at what the Roman bedrooms would have looked like. They were very diﬀerent because they slept in bunk beds and there were lots of beds in each bedroom. Their mattresses were stuﬀed with hay – which was not very comfortable. We also looked at the amphitheatre and tried on armour. The visit made me feel glad that I live now and not in Roman times. Probus ‘The Crocus and Cornﬂower’ was the intriguing title to our meeting… …on the 17th of October. Fifty-one members and lady guests enjoyed the reallife wartime story in which John Macartney described the thrilling escape of an Austrian aristocrat and his Jewish wife from imminent Gestapo arrest. Hans Koch, the importer of the Coventrybased Standard Motor Company and SS (subsequently Jaguar) cars, was known to be opposed to Hitler’s views. He and his wife escaped independently in early 1939. Monika travelled through Hungary, Poland and Sweden before her Americabound ship fortuitously broke down and was towed into Aberdeen. She slipped away and headed southwards, eventually reaching Coventry penniless. Flown out of Vienna at a moment’s notice by a friend

who was mortally-wounded by pursuing Gestapo but successfully crash-landed the plane in Italy, Hans made his way by foot and bicycle to Lyon, suﬀering considerable hardship, then to Paris and Brittany by train before sailing to Cornwall with Irish seamen. He was reunited with Monika after also making his way to Standard who looked after them. Interned in the Isle of Man as enemy aliens

when war was declared in September 1939, they were eventually released in 1943 and employed at Standard. Returning to Austria after the war to restart their business, Hans recovered the wealth he had hidden in his yacht before scuttling it in a lake. Many personal touches included the crocus Hans gave to Monika on their engagement and cornflowers given to her by a friendly Standard employee. It was an amazing and at times harrowing story of survival, skilfully brought to life, and followed by an excellent light lunch provided by Allium Catering. On the 7th of November Denis Cartwright described the construction of the 1,872mile long transcontinental Union Pacific Railroad between Omaha in Nebraska and Sacramento in California. Standard gauge and now 150 years old, it was authorised by the US Federal Government in 1862. The eastern and western sections were built by the Union and Central Pacific respectively

Denis summarised the background to its planning, the key people involved, their financial aspirations and the funding system. Laid through difficult virgin territory by manual labour over plains, wooden trestle bridges, blasted and bored rail beds, there were challenging mountains and harsh environments to be overcome, as well as hostile Cheyenne and Sioux Indians protecting their traditional hunting grounds. Construction materials had to be brought to the western end by sea round Cape Horn: the work force included ex-soldiers, Irish and in the west, mainly Chinese labourers. The two sections met at Promontory, near Salt Lake City, on the 10th of May 1869, a golden spike being driven in. Denis showed slides of work scenes and described some of the novel features of the large locomotives developed. Details of automatic coupling devices, braking systems and operational running procedures were compared with those in the UK. What happened next was revealed at our following meeting. We recently visited The Swan Theatre in Stratford upon Avon… …to see “A Museum in Baghdad,” by Hannah Khailil. This was a story about treasured history, desperate choices and the remarkable Gertrude Bell. In 1926 Gertrude Bell, British archaeologist, founded a museum in Baghdad - and in 2006 Ghalia Hussein is trying to reopen it, after the looting in the Iraq war. Decades apart, these two women share the same goals - to create a fresh sense of unity and nationhood, to make the world aware through the museum and its treasures. But in such unstable times, questions remain: Who is the museum for? Whose culture are we preserving? And why does it matter, when people are dying? It was a very thought-provoking play. Arab women are all too often overlooked, both in life and in history, but these were very strong-

The Swan Theatre is delightful. It opened in 1986 and is a favourite space for many actors, directors and audiences. An intimate theatre seating 426 people on three sides of a deep thrust stage, The Swan belongs to the Royal Shakespeare Company and is built on the side of the larger Royal Shakespeare Theatre, It was closed for extensive refurbishment and reopened in 2010.

March sees us at the Oxford Playhouse for “The Woman in Black“- and in May we are oﬀ to The Mill at Sonning (a lovely theatre in the spring,) to see “House on Cold Hill.” Details have not yet been released to members for all our 2020 trips. Although the weather affected our annual Fireworks and Bonﬁre Spectacular on Saturday 2nd November, the crowd enjoyed a fantastic pyrotechnic display put on by Cotswold Fireworks. They seem to put on a better display each year! This year we also had a bonfire, having been able to source some linseed bales. Two guys entered the “best guy” competition - and as our club President Peter Wyman could not decide which was best, both shared First Prize and the fate of being burned!

Although the event was not a financial success, as intended, it provided a safe environment for families in Tetbury and the surrounding area to enjoy a wonderful firework display at a modest cost. Although organised by the Rotary Club of the South Cotswolds, it involved Tetbury Lions, who helped on the gate and as stewards, Tetbury Rugby Club, who provided hot food refreshments, and Sir William Romney’s School PTA, who provided hot drinks and snacks. At Christmas, our float will be visiting the villagesd of Minety, Lea, Crudwell and the borough of Malmesbury, with static collections by club members at Waitrose

News from St Marys’ Church We tell the story of the Nativity every year, and we may risk becoming so familiar with it that it can feel like it loses its impact. As we reach December, we begin Advent. It is a special time of preparation, when we get ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a time to pause and reflect, and to open ourselves to an encounter with the living God who has come to be with us. Even if we know the Christmas story inside out, we are invited to hear it afresh. To wonder and marvel at what it means that God became a helpless new-born baby; as vulnerable as any one of us.

I now have a new appreciation of waiting for a baby to be born, as my own daughter who was born this autumn kept us waiting for several long weeks past her due date! I know the pressures of this time of year can seem relentless, and for many it’s a time which can be painful. Yet we are all invited to make our journey to the stable, and to meet the Son of God, no matter how chaotic the rest of our lives are. Children and families especially enjoy our annual Christingle and Children’s Crib Services – two very special occasions. All the children are invited to dress up as sheep, shepherds, angels, stars or the even the donkey, to help bring Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. Lots of children are involved in telling the Christmas story, and every child is

invited to be part of the nativity scene. The service of Nine Lessons and Carols will be on Sunday the 22nd of December at 6.00 pm, with our Festival Choir conducted by Ian Higginson. We will hear the Christmas story as told in the Bible, and sing all our favourite carols. It’s followed by mulled wine and mince pies.

Tetbury Scout Group Sheena, Bruce and Logan once again showed how exciting it is being a young scout in Tetbury. The Beavers worked hard on their first aid badges and we were glad they did not need to put their new skills to the test whilst working on their cook’s and cycling badges. The District also organised a sleepover with a Cowboys and Indians theme – this was the first night away for many of this section and they not only really enjoyed it but represented our scout group superbly. Now that the clocks have gone back the Beavers are making the most of the dark nights. They have searched for pirate treasure on a night hike around Chavenage and welcomed our eight new Beavers to a firelight investiture in St Mary’s forest school. The Beavers are now looking forward to Christmas preparations where they will look at the celebration of the festival in other parts of the world.

The Scout Association aims to promote the development of young people… …in achieving their physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. It is therefore a great privilege to congratulate Logan Smith,

who completed his training, to move from a Young Leader to a new Adult Leader, with the District Commissioner formally investing him last month. Scouting also develops the skills of our adults (whilst they have a lot of fun!) and it is great to see more adults coming to help our sections – we hope that they decide to become full leaders in the future. The Beaver and Cub sections finished oﬀ the half term with a visit from the Shooting Stars circus skills team. Steve had everybody juggling, balancing peacock features on their chins and stilt walking. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Scouts had a really busy half term including investing nine new members into the troop. Regular weekly activities have included making picture frames from dowelling, knots and lashings, competing in a Monopoly Run in Stroud and making chocolate mug cakes.

The Scouts also enjoyed many nights away starting with Jean accompanying five scouts on an Air Activity Weekend where they learnt all about flying light aircraft, weather conditions and navigation. The highlight of the weekend was when they each took to the skies in a twin seater light aircraft and even took a turn at piloting the aircraft. A couple of weekends later eight scouts and three leaders took to the water for the weekend on a seventy-two-foot narrowboat on the Kennett and Avon Canal. They travelled from Aldermaston Wharf to Reading and back, each of the scouts taking turns at steering the boat as well as operating the locks, they cooked all their own meals and even more impressively, and to the amazement of many parents, did the washing up!

News from Christ Church Throughout December there will be a space in church… …that seeks to recreate the tent the magi might have stayed in on their journey towards Bethlehem. The real event is shrouded in mystery, so I make no apology for saying we have used our imagination in creating this. We have designed a prayer space for people to reflect on the coming of Christ into the world, but also a fun space, so there will be dressing-up clothes for adults and children, to dress in the garb of the magi, and if you like, take a photo of yourselves. Something for your Christmas cards perhaps? Beyond that it is hard to describe. You’ll have to come and see!

Tetbury Art Society government didn’t check with us and it can be difficult to change dates at this time of the year! Fortunately, there is no clash of venue and our social will still leave members with plenty of time to do their democratic duty. After the Christmas social, members will be fully occupied with the build-up to the festive season. January will see the committee preparing for the AGM in February, when we will finally lay 2019 to rest and start oﬀ our 2020 activities with a programme devised by Gill Ashley.

With the end of the year approaching, we held our last meeting on Wednesday the 6th of November, when Christine Russell visited us to demonstrate oil painting with knives. I know it sounds dangerous and possibly also illegal, but these ‘knives’ are really trowels used to smear buttery blocks of oil paint, premixed on a palette, onto the surface on which the painting is being made. This technique allows a picture to be built up quickly, as long as you do not want to get too detailed.

The paint dries in two week but takes up to six months to cure sufficiently for varnish to be applied, if wanted. Christine kindly allowed us to keep the finished work which we plan to raﬄe at one of our exhibitions in 2020, in aid of the charities which we support. Our thanks go to Lesley Kenny for setting up the splendid 2019 programme, which we have all enjoyed. Barry Barnes has been spearheading arrangements for our Christmas Social, which will be held on Thursday the 12th of December. Yes, I know that it is Election Day - but we made our booking first, the

Tetbury Town Football Club With the local RNLI on standby for the past few weeks… …at SWR and The Recreation Ground, it has been a challenging time for all the coaches and kids to keep the games going and enthusiasm high. However, onwards we go and with our bright orange kits the children have at least made it easy to identify them when floating across the pitches. That said, games have been played and the youth section has once again started in tremendous fashion both in attitude and energy levels. Results have been extremely positive with some notable wins in the U7’s and U12’s teams (well done both teams!) and the growing development of the children’s core skills is visibly improving week over week. Well done the children, but also to the coaches who put such much eﬀort into the planning and execution of their sessions and games, especially given the trying conditions.

After previously mentioning our continued growth in numbers, we have now reached nearly 300 children we are supporting, many now coming from surrounding areas in Nailsworth, Malmesbury , Cirencester and further afield, further showing the continued investment back into the

coaching skills and equipment really is making Tetbury the best place to be for youth football in the area. For the Seniors the first two months of the season have been and gone and our three sides have had mixed fortunes. Despite a terrible start, losing 4-1 and 5-1 in the opening two games, our first team have won the last four league games scoring nineteen goals and only conceding twice to find themselves third in the league! Manager Joel Skinner has fielded no fewer than five of last season’s youth players and with another five making their debuts in the reserves and thirds, the future certainly looks bright. One might even say “Orange…” Benj Spragg’s reserves have found the going tough thus far in a very competitive Stroud League 3. Selection problems and a lot of bad luck see them propping up the division but after a 10-1 victory in the cup last week, spirits are high and league results won’t be far away. The third team under Dave Udall’s watch boast a similar story to the firsts, some very strong performances see them up in third place as they push for promotion this term. Sadly, both firsts and thirds have fallen out of the County Cup at the first hurdle, but the reserves stormed into the next round with that superb 10-1 win. The weather that has wreaked havoc in recent weeks has hopefully abated and November and December look to be jampacked with fixtures for all three teams. If you fancy supporting your local side, the firsts and reserves play home games at Preston Park and the third team at the Rec. There are games most Saturdays, kicking oﬀ at 2.00 pm. Following his recent resignation from the Thirteen, I would like to start my column by thanking Mike Francis for all his hard work for our organisation and the town over the past nineteen years. He will be missed - and we wish him well in the future. “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” At St. Mary’s playgroup we run Forest School sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These outdoor sessions help to build the children’s confidence, they encourage independence and they help to raise self esteem through small achievable tasks. The children can move, discover and explore at their own pace, and it gives them a chance to connect to the natural world. Our children spend their days outdoors at our beautiful Forest School site on the grounds at Ilsom House Care Home, all through the year; climbing trees, learning how to use tools safely, foraging, bug hunting, digging, playing imaginatively and generally learning about our wonderful environment. With the weather getting colder, we have been making sure to stay warm by lighting fires, having warm milk and squash at snack time, wrapping up with hats and gloves and keeping very active. After all, “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing!” If you would like to find out more about what we get up to at Forest School, then please get in touch so we can arrange for you to come and see us in action.

We have recorder groups playing carols and mini shepherds, sheep, cows and angels appear around every corner. I can still remember the sensation of tinsel around my head as I stood dressed as an excited angel in the Nativity play and the overwhelming sense of community, peace and love in the Gloucestershire village church in the evening as we sang our carols to our proud parents.

It is the time of year when a church school really comes into its own. We know it is exhausting and there is a lot to do but the joy on the faces of the children, the pride when they sing and dance their hearts out and the tears in the eyes of the parents make us all feel part of something really special. Tetbury Nursery Playgroup ‘Guiding children to make sense of their world and community’ is a key learning and development requirement from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS,) the set of standards that all early years providers must adhere to. During November, we had plenty of opportunity to put this into practice as we helped the children understand the importance of Remembrance, explored Diwali - the 4-5 day long Festival of Lights celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists, and enjoyed activities around the Bonfire night theme. The children (and staﬀ ) also got into the spirit of Children in Need, raising money by wearing their pyjamas to playgroup. Another element of the EYFS is to promote the teaching and learning required to

ensure ‘school readiness.’ An important part of each year for us is easing the transition for children into primary school, and it starts quite early on. This means working together with the local schools and parents, to understand how we can best prepare our pre-schoolers, and that is often far more about their self-care and promoting a level of independence such as putting on their own coat and wellies, pouring their own water from a jug, buttering bread and sitting for stories. During November we began P.E. sessions, not only to teach the importance of being healthy and exercising, but to support them recognising their named P.E. kit and changing into it themselves. As we move into December, preparation for Christmas becomes our main focus, with our much-anticipated nativity play, Christmas party and possibly even a visit from the man in red himself! At the time of writing we’re putting the final planning into our stall at St. Mary’s Primary School

Tetbury WI A rare bright and dry November day… …welcomed twenty-two of our ladies to Whatley Manor, where Ricki, Sous Chef in Niall Keating’s Two-Michelin-Star Kitchen, gave us a tour of the kitchen and the kitchen garden. After a wander around the gardens we enjoyed lunch in the Brasserie, where the food and the experience rated very highly. We will be back!

Stephen Hirst, Town and District Councillor, had less upbeat news to share, with detail of the changes in waste collections for domestic homes. He faced a good grilling from our ladies whose points he will relay back to the council. The Annual meeting was the main focus of our monthly gathering at the Goods Shed, with reports from the various and varied groups, and an inspiring address from our Lady President Chris. We welcome Heather as a new member of the committee and thank Mary and Patricia for their combined 20 years of service as they step down. The night marked the month when the club reaches its 50th year, bringing to an end a yearlong program of celebrations. With one final glass of fizz we toasted Tetbury Evening WI, which now has a very healthy one hundred and eleven members. The December meeting will be held on Monday the 9th at 7.30 pm in the Goods Shed where Christmas Celebrations will include a Secret Santa along with entertainment from Lizzy Lindsell and Jonathan Atkins. We ended 2018 having decided to approach redeveloping the Dolphins Hall in multiple phases and having asked the people of Tetbury for their first opinions of our plans. That first public consultation feels so recent, yet it was almost a whole year ago. In the Spring, we presented our updated plans for the first phase of the project, a new youth centre and sports facility along with the first draft of a new Dolphins Hall. People had lots of great feedback on our ideas which we fed back to our architects. The main thing I have learnt in the last nine months is that building a public building is both a slow and expensive process. So, what have we been up to since Spring? Firstly, we had to review several alternative hall designs which incorporated the feedback. After that, we had numerous decisions to make on what style of building best fitted the new designs, stood a reasonable chance of getting through planning and, with some successful fundraising activities, we could aﬀord to build.

We have also had to commission numerous reports on a whole host of things that planners will query. Right now, we are in the middle of the process of “pre-planning.” Pre-planning is where you work with local planners, conservation officers, etcetera, to ensure that the plans you eventually submit should be acceptable to Cotswold District Council. The feedback we have received to date has been very positive. We now feel in a confident enough position to, once again, ask the people of Tetbury for their opinions in another round of consultation.

U3A The U3A in Tetbury already has twentynine activity groups in full swing… …and several more under development, in just four months. One of the most popular is Mah-Jong and it is a very good example of how the self-teaching ethos of the U3A comes into play. When the group started a few months ago, it was made up of beginners, people who had not played for some time and a few with more recent experience. Many had played under diﬀerent rules in diﬀerent countries, although none in China! An initial meeting agreed to buy a few copies of a Mah-Jong hand book from the resources library at U3A National Office, which is well illustrated and includes lots of special hands in an easy to read format. Tetbury Bowls Club

Things are moving on apace with improvements at Tetbury Bowls Club. A small band of our members is there every morning, working hard, and they have already removed the old changing rooms and store ready for the foundations for our

new ladies and men’s changing rooms. Lots of timber is being stored to be re-used in the new building. There is also a lot going on behind the scenes with planners, architects, builders and fundraising events as our improvements are not going to be cheap but willing members will do as much work as possible to keep our costs down. We were delighted to nominate Victor Bridgeman for the Tetbury Inspiration awards for all he does for the club as greenkeeper and development work. Our AGM at the end of October went smoothly and was probably the shortest on record with our new Constitution approved, and some new members welcomed onto the committee. We said goodbye to outgoing President Joyce Keating and welcomed new President John Hughes. Twenty-four of our members will be

playing a friendly match at Cotswold Indoors at the end of November. This will be fun as indoor bowls is very diﬀerent from outdoor and takes time to get used to, so even our best outdoor players will end up in the ditch or on the next rink at first. Thankfully we will be taking along some of our more experienced indoor bowlers until the others get the hang of it. Friday night socials are still happening with a great Music Quiz and ever popular Bingo in the last couple of weeks. Up and coming are a Table Top Challenge, Christmas Bingo (we are promised it’s Bingo as we’ve never seen it before), Skittles Night and Balderdash quiz with a variety of food to keep us going. With its continuing strong sense of communit y, it will keep pace with gro wth, whilst at the same time preserving and celebrating its heritage and stunning cou ntryside.” Fast forward five years, our two-y ear-old daughter is at Tig gers which she lov es, and as a local small busin ess owner, I have enjoyed getting to know the local commu nity – but my wife works fro m home, in the mi ddle of what has been a building site for the past half-decade. Surro unded by noise, du st, traffic and general commo tion, like many of us, she’s pretty fed up.
