Young by Name Casting on for Autumn Winning first prize in the knitting category at a village show has ignited my winter addiction to knitting a little earlier than usual. It generally kicks in as the clocks go back, the evenings become long and dark, and any excuse will do to spend more time in my armchair by the fire. Knitting gives me the feeling of doing something constructive, while just sitting down and having a rest. The rhythmic, repetitive movements of the needles and yarn quickly send me into a pleasant meditative state, especially now I’ve swapped old-fashioned steel and plastic needles and artificial yarns for smooth bamboo and natural fibres, warm and soft against my hands. Every stitch feels like a caress.
Childhood Pattern I learned to knit at the age of five, and under my mother’s coaching quickly learned to knit and read simultaneously. Before long, I rose to the dizzy heights of having my own named box in the backroom of Rema’s, our local wool shop. Here were stored the requisite number of wool balls for your current project, and you’d buy them one at
a time as it progressed – effectively buying a sweater on an instalment plan… In those days everyone knitted, because home-made jumpers were significantly cheaper than shop-bought ones. The downside was the slower speed of delivery. When I was ten, I grew faster than the

Later, I knitted countless sweaters for boyfriends. At university I knitted the same Fair Isle pullover in different colourways for two different boys in quick succession. (I must have been keen!)

jaunty orange, green and brown striped sweater on my needles. On completion, I had to keep pulling on the sleeves to make them reach my wrists.
These days I prefer to make small items for charities, and I’ve found enough outlets to keep my needles busy through the winter. The most innovative is a Canadian project to provide small knitted dolls instead of Styrofoam chips in humanitarian medical aid boxes. ‘Twiddlemuffs’ are another great idea: knitted hand muffs adorned with buttons, beads and other decorations to comfort people with dementia. But for now I’m keeping it simple, making blanket squares to be taken to India at half term by pupils of Westonbirt School. (Frankenstein blankets, as my friend Charlotte calls them, for obvious reasons!) My teenage daughter is doing the same for Syrian refugees. It’s humbling to be able to help others while, with our pretty yarns and silky-smooth needles, we’re just indulging ourselves in a soothing hobby. But my prize-winning knitted tea cosy, with its thirty-plus individually knitted flowers and leaves, all sewn on by hand, isn’t going anywhere. Well, they do say charity begins at home. We welcomed a world class competitor to our August Lions’ meeting in the form of Freddie ‘Apples’ Aplin who, at the age of 10,
a short talk on the trip of a lifetime and thanked the club for our assistance. She went on to announce that she had won the competition and was now World Power Lifting Champion, as well as being the British and European Champion. We were given the opportunity to look at the medals and certificates. Another great success story for this town and its amazing people. We gave her a rapturous round of applause!

October is also the month when Tetbury Lions Club celebrates its Charter night with a dinner at the Royal Agricultural University. Our next meeting promises to be a memorable affair and if all goes to plan, we may see our numbers grow by three which would take us to the largest membership in my memory and possibly since the club first started in 1973. Avening WI
We are busy planning activities for the Autumn! Our next walk will be at the beginning of October starting in Preston Park and making our way to The Trouble House for their usual excellent lunch.
The August walk took place in Framptonon-Severn. The weather was dry until we encountered a torrential downpour - just as we were nearly back for our lunch at The Three Horseshoes. The dogs were already rather wet having had a cooling dip in the canal on the way… Our winning team in the heats of the Federation quiz will be taking parting in the final this Autumn and we hope they do well! Our ‘walking netball’ sessions with Kemble WI are great fun, and will be continuing. We play twice a month, alternating between Kemble and Avening. Our catering teams
have been busy over the summer with various functions in the village. It will be our birthday month in October, and we shall be running the Avening Community Café on Tuesday the 15th of October to showcase our WI. The Gloucester Federation will be celebrating their Centenary anniversary in October and three of our members will represent us at a service in the Cathedral on the twelfth. After bidding a fond farewell to our wonderful y6 leavers at the end of the last term, it is ‘all change,’ as pupils and staff settle into their new classes and routines. We have two new members of staff : Mr Hall as the Hawks (y3/4) class teacher and our new teaching assistant Miss Birch in the Kestrels class (y1/2). We have also welcomed seventeen new children into our reception class, who are being supported beautifully by our team of ‘Year One Experts.’ Classes are currently electing members for this year’s school council which is also teaching the children about the democratic process.

With a new term always comes a brand new class topic. The Hawks class are looking at the workings of the human body in their topic ‘keeping fit,’ while next door in the Owls Class (y5/6) their topic has a scientific theme as they explore and experiment with ‘muck, mess and mixtures.’ The Kestrels class are currently discovering about the Great Fire of London while the Eagles are learning about each other in their topic ‘all about me.’ The Owls class have been in their classroom for a matter of weeks and already they are preparing to leave it to travel to Devon for their class residential at the end of September. Pupils and staff will take part in activities from rafting to beach-combing to climbing the high ropes. Not only is the trip aimed at encouraging children to be active and try new things, it also enables the children to get to know each other properly and to establish new friendships.

History of Tetbury Society
On the 5th of September Professor Jennifer Tann spoke to HOTS about the historic Woollen Industry. The full title of her talk was ‘Pictures and Places, Gloucestershire Woollen Industry through Contemporary Illustration.’ Professor Tann has studied the Woollen Industry in Gloucestershire in depth - and the Woollen Mills in particular – and is the author of a novel on the subject. Written records are her principal source of information, but she finds that pictures can put more ‘life’ and atmosphere into the research. She showed us many examples, but admitted you often need to beware of the artist’s tendency to present an attractive picture - and to use a rural setting that distorts the truth.

Surprisingly, the map of the Muster Roll Jennifer brought, showing the number of able-bodied men who could be required to do military service, also provided information about the numbers of people working in the woollen industry. She also showed a picture of workers setting up a ‘Tenter’ rack on which the famous ‘Stroud Red’ cloth was dried in the open.
In her first illustration, the artist showed a ‘boy meets girl’ scene not in a rural setting, but at the girl’s place of work. Of particular interest was that it showed a Spinning Wheel in detail. Although it was undated, the couple’s clothing made it clear that it was an early picture. Jennifer also had

Jennifer spoke at length about a large picture that hangs in the Museum in the Park, Stroud, which shows tenter racks* on the hillsides and the StroudWater Canal threading its way between the miller’s house and his garden. Details of the picture show items relating to the woollen industry such as bales of wool and dyeing equipment. A photograph of Dunkirk Mill illustrated that the mill owner had his house further up the hill, where it was quieter…

Too often the setting is ‘prettied up’ with sheep or picnickers in the foreground and trees added to enhance the rural effect. The buildings may be given an enhanced grandeur too, either by picturing a classic façade or showing them ‘larger than life.’ Some also seemed to have too many tall chimneys!

The present state of near-anarchy in parliament is present in other departments of government too: I have noticed it in the matrimonial and probate courts. Apart from the ‘decree absolute,’ the most important document to emanate from the divorce court is the ‘final financial order,’ which deals with the redistribution of financial assets following a divorce. In most cases, this is an agreement signed by both the parties and their lawyers. Even if the parties agree, a Judge may decline to make an order, which may have its implications if mortgages or equity release are involved.

To complete the sale of a property an executor needs a grant of probate, but there is nothing to prevent an executor from putting a property on the market or entering into a binding contract before a grant is obtained - if safeguards are put in place, particularly where lenders are involved. The probate registries tell us not to contact them - but then send us emails omitting the ‘c’ in the spelling of ‘.com,’ which then disappear into oblivion! Sales are falling through due to delays that are the fault of the courts… Why have these once-respected institutions lost their grip? Historically, snobbery played its part in military, educational and legal circles. Officers in the Grenadiers referred to certain regiments as ‘Charlie’ regiments. If they thought they were better, they had to maintain standards. I was once negotiating with a partner in Withers, a long-established central London matrimonial firm, who treated me with disdain until I mentioned I used to work for Charles Russell, which had an equal or better pedigree. He instantly changed his tune. These institutions have built up reputations over generations. Respect must be earned - and will be lost if the courts continue as they are for much longer. They have been respected for years but following the cuts over the last ten years have become a shambles. I do not believe they have any pride in what they do. They are not trying to offer a good service. If they want to retain their reputation, they will have to try harder. Tetbury Rugby Football Club Tetbury Rugby Football Club has assumed legal ownership of Pike Field… …at Quercus Road in Tetbury and has signed a partnership deal with McGurk Group (Est. 1963,) to construct a new rugby facility in the town. Pike Field is a 12-acre site in the northwest of Tetbury which is currently unused. All planning permissions and environmental licenses have been
successfully granted, and the project will now begin construction. The build will be delivered in three phases. Phase 1 is the construction of two full-size RFU specification rugby pitches, a training/ Minis area, plus access roads and car parking. Phase 2 will bring lighting to the pitches, and Phase 3 will see a clubhouse added to the site. A project committee made up of professionally qualified volunteers from the Club’s membership has been working over the last 18 months to reach this stage, and Phase 1 is expected to take twenty-four months to complete, with further work taking place after that.
TRFC Chairman Roger Peill said, “After many years we are now finally able to realise our dream and create a first-class rugby facility, bringing together our large and growing membership of all ages, genders and abilities in one place. Our plan is to answer an immediate need, but also ensure a lasting legacy for the Club and the Town.” He continued, “I’d like to thank everyone that has been involved so far, in particular the Land Trustees who have ultimately made this possible.” Eamonn and Brian McGurk of McGurk Group added, “We are delighted to be partnering with Tetbury RFC at this exciting point in their development. We hope to bring our considerable construction capability and knowledge to the project and deliver a superb facility. It’s also part of our continued support of grassroots sport in Gloucestershire, something we are very passionate about. We are confident that Tetbury RFC is in safe hands as The McGurk Group commit to go above and beyond expectations and have excellent customer retention because of this.” Construction work is set to begin in the next couple of months. Eating Out both were tasty and well-judged in terms of portions. The pâté was richly flavoured and the pakora perfectly spiced and light. Maybe the salad garnishes were more salad-sized than garnish-sized but, hey, that’s hardly an issue.
Some weeks back, we were pottering about in the backwoods of Gloucestershire and found ourselves driving through Miserden. Having only ever heard of it previously, we found a tranquil village with signage and paintwork in the estate livery, a ‘corner-shop’ and… a village pub! So, ever the adventurers, we resolved to lunch at The Carpenter’s Arms when an opportunity arose.
Pulling into the car park, banners boasted of a beer festival that we’d missed, and a chalkboard exclaimed that ‘Full English Breakfasts’ were served ‘All Day.’ All the customers but two were outside on benchtables, soaking up the September sunshine. Inside felt quite untouched, like a genuine country pub. Given the good-sounding meals on the menu and Wye Valley beers, I felt we’d made a real discovery. However, I should point out we’re not talking cordon bleu, here; these were pub standards but, encouragingly, most dishes were homemade with locally-sourced ingredients. Starters were pâté on toast and some vegetable pakoras. Neither was fancy but

Flossy then chose steak and ale pie, chips, peas and gravy, while I went for salmon fishcakes, chips, salad and tartare sauce. The pie looked glorious. A big, square, golden box of pastry, drizzled with gravy - hardly a summery-looking thing, I know, but appetising all the same! The pastry was good (though, judging by its softness, it’d probably been home-baked then microwaved,) and the filling was unctuous and savoury. Flossy was a little disappointed with the amount of actual meat inside, but I guess you can never be certain with an individually baked pie, can you? My fishcakes were lovely. Firm, with lots of salmon, a good blend of herbs and seasoning and just a hint of chilli. Each one was about the size of a tin of tuna fish, so we’re talking a pretty substantial meal here and, surprisingly, I was still eating mine long after Flossy had finished (though, to be truthful, I did help a bit with her pastry…). With the chips and extras, we both felt fully stuffed! Embarrassingly, it wasn’t until I went in to pay that I realised we’d missed another whole menu - the vegetarian one – offering things like beetroot burgers, bell peppers stuffed with garlic mushroom cous-cous and baked aubergine stacked with roasted vegetables! Maybe if we’d been less keen to just get on with eating, we’d have taken more time to look around and would’ve made different choices, I don’t know. As it is, we’ll just have to go back again soon to try the other ‘board’. And, given that two starters, two meals, a beer and a large wine came to just about £45, we’ll definitely be going back. Mayor’s Report Following a busy summer, September continued in the same vein! Firstly, I would like to thank the Town Councillors, who all gave their time over the summer to ensure that the Police Museum could be opened on Saturdays for our residents and visitors. In fact, they continued this into September, with the museum opening on two Heritage Weekends as well. If anyone is interested in becoming involved with maintaining the collection, or in opening the museum to the public outside Town Council office hours, please contact our Curator Maria via the Town Council office. At the start of September, I attended the historic ‘Beating of the Bounds,’ the traditional annual walk to ‘beat the boundaries’ of our town, followed by the presentation of the Feoffee and Thirteen accounts and a very welcome cup of coffee. Working Groups seem to very busy now there is a lot to do in our town. At the start of September, I chaired the first working group meeting regarding Leisure and Recreation - and at the end of September the first working group meeting to look at Climate Strategy in the town. With the start of the ‘Greening Tetbury’ group, next month
I shall be attending a meeting with their representatives and with District Councillor Rachel Coxcoon, Cabinet Member for Planning Policy, Climate Change and Energy. I shall also be attending the Gloucestershire Rural Community Council Climate Strategy event, at the end of October. After years of planning, the Town Council - in Partnership with the Feoffee, the European Union and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust - held our ‘Community Planting’ day, starting off the Wild Towns scheme, with the planting of the Bluebell trail on the Rail Lands. Thank you to everyone who took part in this event and I look forward to watching this scheme develop and the potential return of waterflow through Preston Park. This month sees the return of the ‘Dolphin Inspirational Awards,’ and I look forward to
updating you regarding this evening, next month. Finally, Christmas is coming! COULD YOUR ORGANISATION BENEFIT FROM A TOWN COUNCIL GRANT? Tetbury Town Council has approved a new Grants Policy, whereby grants may be applied for in two ‘windows’ during the year. The first window for applications was in June, with a number of town organisations being successful. The second window for applications will be the 1st of November to the 30th of November – with decisions to be made at the end of January 2020. When considering the applications received, the Council will give the highest priority to its ongoing commitment of paying ‘strategic’ grants to the Dolphins Hall, the Youth Club and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau each year. Funding for ‘minor grants’ (i.e. those other than Strategic Grants,) is not guaranteed, since they will depend on the funding amount which remains after the Council’s Strategic Grants have been paid/committed. Minor grants are intended to provide ‘one off’ funding, rather than to be an ongoing commitment by the Council. Recipients of a minor grant last year will normally be declined assistance in 2019/20. No other grant funding shall be issued outside the above process UNLESS the Council agrees that it is the only possible source of funding for an essential town organisation at risk of ceasing to function, OR that an important town event would be at risk without the Council stepping in. This caveat should not be used by applicants who have missed the application window. Organisations wishing to apply for a grant should contact the Town Council Offices for an application form.

As I write this, we have entered autumn: the early mornings are chillier and the evenings are getting darker - but today, the sun is shining. As the tress change their colour our wonderful Cotswolds are always very beautiful before the leaves begin to fall. Two weeks ago, we welcome our new Parish Priest Fr Philip Thomas; we hope that he will be happy here in Tetbury and in Cirencester! We look forward to moving forward with him as our shepherd and guide. We said a fond goodbye to Fr Isidore during the first weekend of September and we wish him well in Swindon. During the last weekend of September, we celebrate our Feast of St Michael the Archangel; we commenced on Friday with a music evening. On Sunday, Fr Philip will Celebrate Mass followed by a ‘Breakfast,’ organised by a family of the parish. All are invited to join us at Mass on Sunday morning at 9.00 am, whether you are new to Tetbury or have been away from church for whatever reason. You are assured of a warm welcome; families too because we will have Children’s liturgy for them.

Tetbury Camera Club Those still at school might not look forward to the ending of the summer holidays, but for members of Tetbury Camera Club there is the opposite feeling. We can’t wait for our regular Tuesday evening gettogethers to start again! Over the summer months we made informal visits to the beautiful gardens at Miserden and the historical naval docks in Portsmouth, went on an evening cruise round the waterways of Bristol harbour and - closer to home - headed to Castle Combe and the colour and movement the lakes in Cotswold Water Park. One of the benefits of having photography as a hobby is that having a camera in your hands stimulates you to take an interest in your surroundings. For some of our members their favourite subjects
are landscapes, then there are those who prefer wildlife. Some like sports, others architecture, botany or portraits. Knowing this, our programme is always planned to try and ensure that there are evenings to suit everyone.

If you want to, it is still possible to learn something new every day, so we have a stimulating series of guest speakers booked in to entertain us over the coming months. Looking ahead to our autumn season there are photographers who have developed styles that we have never seen before, such as graphic designer David Jenner, who has perfected a way to produce panoramas which he takes over the space of several hours. We then have another guest speaker called Ruth Davey who uses time in a completely different way. She is going to encourage us to slow down, look at the world around us with a more enquiring mind and produce pictures which will be not just relaxing to look at, but also more pleasurable to take. No wonder we have been keen to be back together at our regular weekly meetings at Tetbury’s Priory Inn! Our tastes may be diverse, but the cameras we use give us all a common denominator. Even though they are different the pictures they produce give us a topic of conversation we can share when we break for the bar at half time. That’s also a convenient time for us to discuss hints, tips and advice if there are new members keen to broaden their knowledge. If you are wondering what inspired this month’s picture, it was taken when we met up with members of the Tetbury Amateur Dramatic group, as well as other clubs and associations, at an event organised in the Dolphins Hall to let recent arrivals to the area know what goes on in the town. If you couldn’t attend that day but would like to know more about the camera club, that’s easy. Just come along to The Priory for 7.30 pm on a Tuesday. We are always there, happy to talk pictures and to welcome new members. to our team, too: Clare, Lisa and Alison. Clare has been helping us on a Monday for the last year and is now working toward her Level three Diploma. She’s working three days a week at playgroup and at our forest school site. Lisa and Alison are our new ‘bank staff.’ They are all fantastic with the children and fabulously kind and caring. We are very grateful to have them join our team.
We have had a wonderful start to September, welcoming lots of lovely new children and their parents this term, who have all settled in very well and are enjoying their time at playgroup and at forest school. We would like to welcome some new staff members

We are very excited to share that we are now running new sessions and taking children from 2+ on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning at playgroup (whilst Friday is our pre-school session only.) We are also running three fantastic Forest School sessions a week for children 3+ on a Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning and Thursday all day. These new sessions are working extremely well - and we are looking forward to meeting even more local families looking for high-quality provision in an exciting and nurturing environment! We’d like to say a big “Thank you!” to the Coop for the support and funding which has given us the opportunity to buy shelving and storage units on wheels. Girlguiding Plans are well underway for our Centenary celebrations next year. They start with a Thinking Day afternoon tea in February and end with a Christmas party! We will also be joining a Region takeover day at Legoland and going on a residential at our County HQ near Cheltenham. There will be a craft show with an exhibition of our archives and a treasure hunt around Tetbury. We are hoping that past members will visit the archive exhibition – and hopefully find photos of themselves when they were younger! Details will of course be in an Advertiser article next year. A vital part of the celebration will be to design badges and publicity for each event, and we are hoping there may be a graphic designer reading this who might like to help us to get it right! At the end of the summer, 2nd Tetbury Guides had an old-fashioned outing to the seaside, (which included the inevitable rain showers.) They caught the train to WestonSuper-Mare, walked along the pier and visited the amusement arcade, followed up with a fish and chip lunch. After lunch they played some games on the beach and finished off with an ice-cream before
catching the train back. The girls used the train journey to complete a clause of the new navigator badge, studying timetables, checking out the on-board facilities and discussing safety and other aspects of both the journey and the railway. Plans for this term include looking at Tetbury through the eyes of a visitor and taking part in ‘Parliament Week’ activities. They will also continue our service commitment to the town with a session of litter picking.

Dolphins Hall and Recreation Ground Don’t Mess with Tetbury! The Dolphins Hall and Memorial Recreation Ground is a public space and the trustees work hard to maintain it, and to ensure the community can enjoy it all year round.. The Recreation Ground only has a tiny income from the sports clubs who rent their pitches and unfortunately our funding over recent years from the Town Council has been cut too - and our grant application this year was only supported in part. Being able to keep the space to the required standard for people to enjoy safely, then, is becoming increasingly difficult. Sadly, this is made even more difficult by the antisocial behaviour of some users of the facility - not
treating it in the way they should. The trustees remain committed to not only managing but improving the space for our own and future generations, but we do need your help and support – and for the ground to be used responsibly. We want to issue a public plea, then, to remind everyone of some simple rules: 1. Please put litter in the bins provided. 2. Dogs should be on a lead at all times and any fouling picked up and deposited in the bins provided. 3. The play park is for use by children of an age appropriate for the equipment 4. Equipment should only be used for the purpose it’s intended. It makes me sad that we even need to say this, but we’re a small team struggling to
stay on top of what needs to be done and some things we deal with frankly make us wonder how we can ever succeed. For example, there is one piece of equipment, a small train in the children’s play park, from which someone keeps unbolting the seat and throwing it into the hedge! This is not an easy thing to do. It requires plastic caps to be removed from several bolts before those bolts can then be undone with a spanner. This is not something that can just happen by accident, or because someone gets a bit rough with it, it’s deliberate vandalism. Sadly, if people continue to be unable to follow these simple rules, then we will be forced to take further action, so please don’t be one of the few who spoil it for the many. If the current level of littering, vandalism and antisocial behaviour continues, the trustees may have no option but to begin closing some areas. To end on a more positive note - we know there are far more people who love the Recreation Ground and treat it with respect than those who don’t. We would love for more of you in the former category to get involved in the upkeep of the ground and to be part of the team. Whether it’s helping with litter picking, simple playground maintenance, or just in gently and politely asking others to pick up their litter or dog mess, if you think you could help, in even some small way, please email me via chair@dolphinshall.org Steve Scott

They may also try and get payment details from you, as they may say your last debit has not gone through and you need to make an immediate payment. Don’t let them get away with this! No security package can protect your personal details, once you have handed over control of your device…
I first alerted you to phone and email scams over nine years ago, and the threat has not diminished! It really is big business, often associated with organised crime and much of it originating in Asia - but not exclusively so. They are most often out to mislead you by fooling you into thinking you have problems with your computer, your online accounts, your phone line or your broadband connection. They are very persuasive and very easy to fall for - but do not be tricked! It’s very important that you do not respond to any
such calls or emails unless YOU initiated the contact – and that you hang up the phone or delete the email. One such ruse begins with a caller saying they’re from BT, TalkTalk, or Microsoft, for instance. The gist of the conversation will be to say your connection is going to be terminated – or that your computer is ‘infected with viruses’ or ‘running slowly,’
I hate to repeat myself, but this can be very serious! You can have your credit card and bank details, your personal information and your ‘identity’ stolen this way. If you give them control of your computer, they can also download all your data and documents to sift through at their leisure, so do not be fooled. If you are concerned – or if you think the call may be genuine hang up and dial the company in question directly. Use a different phone and dial the number you have on file or on your last bill or correspondence. I too get these calls and they can be very persuasive. If some of your details have been ‘hacked’ or compromised elsewhere, don’t be surprised if the caller has some genuine information about you. They may be fishing for more, so do not give anything further away.

Leighterton Primary School It’s been a real pleasure to welcome our new children in Apsemore Class to Leighterton Primary School. All of our children, including those who have only just joined us, have made a fantastic start to the new school year and everyone was pleased to see their friends again to catch up. The children are excited by their new classes and their topics. Our oldest children in Ridge Class are learning about, ‘Earth and Beyond’ and will be going on a ‘Mission to Mars’ during their ‘wow’ day, which is coming up in the next few weeks. ‘The Romans’ is the topic that Haymead Class will focus on this term and they are reading ‘Tilly and the Time Machine’ to help to take them back to the Roman period. Bowldown Class’s topic is, ‘The Great Explorers’ and they will be asking questions to find out why Neil Armstrong, Tim Peake and Mae C Jemison are important. ‘Toybox Tales – What shall we play?’ is the topic for our newest learners in Apsemore Class.

Probus were introduced into weirs, but fords and restrictive bridges became more common as the population increased. By the 1700’s, shipping was increasingly thwarted. Easy to listen to, Richard’s wealth of experience and advice gave us much to think about. We held our August Exhibition in the Market Hall between Saturday the 24th and Monday the 26th of August. Twenty-eight artists submitted work of good quality and well over two hundred and fifty people came through over the three days. But somehow, they were holding onto their money! We sold only four pictures rather than the usual seventeen or eighteen. We issued voting slips to visitors so that they could select what was their favourite picture in the exhibition; the winning picture was ‘Old Friends’ by Dr Robert Stevens, with Jackie Sapp’s ‘Poppies’ only two votes behind. On Wednesday the 4th of September, Stewart Geddes PRWA gave us a talk entitled ‘Go On Admit It – You Want To Go Abstract.’ Stewart drew from his 40 years of experience. Starting as a student at Bristol Art studios, Stewart graduated in 1983 and then did an MA course in London. He then went through a crisis - he wasn’t enjoying his art anymore. He became more and more interested in colour and harder edges. He investigated collage. He loved tearing,

Stewart stated that he began by accurately painting what he was actually seeing, but now sees that there is a place for abstraction. News from Christ Church Dear Friends, it has been great to be part of the growing ‘Greening Tetbury’ initiative, looking at how we can minimise our carbon footprint and live more sustainably and more joyfully on the part of planet Earth that is Tetbury. We have start-up groups looking at food, transport, energy and plastics - and an over-arching group looking at how we communicate what we are doing and how we enable people to embrace change. Lots of exciting things bubbling up! Our next meeting is on Tuesday the 22nd of October at 7.30 pm – the venue has yet to be confirmed. Take a peek at our website to see what it’s all about: www.greeningtetbury.org A few times a year I do a short Bible study series. It lasts about an hour and half and you don’t have to come to church to share in them. They are on Wednesday afternoons at 2.30 pm and finish by 4.00 pm. We read a Bible passage, share our thoughts about it, and see how it relates to matters in our own lives. We seek God’s truth for us, both individually and together. We’ll be doing this on Wednesdays 9th, 16th and 23rd of October and anyone is welcome to join us. Every couple of years we hold a service near All Saints Day. This year we will have a service on Sunday the 3rd of November at 4.00 pm, to give thanks for those we have known and loved who have died within the last two years. We read the names of those who have died, reverently remember them and light a candle in their memory. It is a poignant and touching occasion, and many find it a helpful space, a little after the funeral itself, to acknowledge their continuing love for one who has parted from them into God’s hands. As Autumn approaches and the allotments start to empty of their produce from the summer months, plans start for the winter and planting starts for the spring. The Feoffee are proud to be involved with the ‘Wild Towns’ scheme, where we are working in partnership with Tetbury Town Council, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and the European Union. The start of this was the Community Planting Day at the end of September, where Bluebells were planted along the Rail Lands to create the Bluebell Trail. This scheme will now look at the entire area from Preston Park to the Goods Shed, and hopefully we will see a return to waterflow in the stream and improvement to the whole area.

There is lots to do in preparation so we can all come together to celebrate this very special time of year. The summer season is well and truly coming to an end,
I’m happy to say that the formal beds in St Marys’ churchyard which we redesigned last year, have worked! We’re very pleased with those and with the removal of the old diseased yew trees along the main path. It has opened the churchyard up, allowing a lot more light to reach the beds.
and if we haven’t started already, we’ll very soon be stripping out all the annual bedding plants. In their place we will be replenishing the bulbs, ready for next year’s spring display. The roundabout project is almost complete, but like all gardening, it’s quite possible that things won’t necessarily ‘grow to plan.’ If that proves to be the case, we will tweak it as it develops. This will not only ensure that the roundabout looks its best, with more colour throughout the year, but it will allow us to maintain the improved visibility for those crossing the London Road, to and from the Highfield housing development.
Last year we gave the Diana, Princess of Wales memorial bed a new look - but that hasn’t quite worked to plan, so we’ll be giving it a bit of tweak before next year’s season gets underway.

The profit we make from each basket goes directly into the funds needed to keep the town looking as attractive as we can possibly make it, which we know, from the number of lovely comments we receive, is much appreciated by many residents, traders and visitors alike. But it’s not just children, is it? I think adults are perhaps worse. We might say “Thank you!” - but so often we are discontented with what we have - and feel life has cheated us in one way or another. At St Mary’s School this term, I have been helping the children to think about cultivating thankful hearts, with the slogan “A Thankful heart is a Happy heart.” We’re actually growing a thankful heart - in a pot! We put in the seed of prayer, asking God to make us thankful. We added the soil of faith, believing in God’s goodness, and we are watering it with hope and letting it grow in the warmth and light of God’s love. It’s growing beautifully and is now covered in the children’s “Thank you!” prayers. And as the harvest is gathered in, this is the season to be thankful for all the wonderful things we enjoy in life. So, on Sunday the 13th of October, we have our Harvest Festival service at the usual time of 10.00 am. It includes, of course, a special harvest ‘Little Fishes’ session during the service, with a Bible story and craft activities. Come and give thanks - and join in a rousing chorus of “We Plough the Fields and Scatter.” Then there’s a special harvest lunch afterward in church – all are welcome. But before that, of course, we will be delighted to welcome the Tetbury Music Festival to St Marys’ Church again this year. The special Benefice Music Festival Eucharist on Sunday the 6th of October at 10.30 am is a real treat. And it will be my last service before I go off on a three-month sabbatical (returning in mid-January 2020,) so I hope lots of people can come along. We shall have something nice to drink in the Vicarage afterward, to mark the occasion.

It is the beginning of a new school year at St. Mary’s - and with the start of the year comes a sense of optimism and hope. Children have arrived for the start of the school year with new shoes, smart haircuts, pencil cases, PE kit and bags of curiosity, enthusiasm and excitement. We are all feeling very positive about the year ahead. Over the summer we have
had the decorators in and new carpets have been laid. We have a super new outside learning space for our Reception children and work has been completed on our school roof. We are very grateful to the PTfA and the parents and community who support their events, the Diocese, the Feoffees and The Hills Group who are building new houses in Tetbury, all of whom have made generous donations to our school improvements. The optimism extends to our pupils’ numbers too, as the school has grown to almost 350 pupils on our roll this year and we were delighted to welcome our new cohort into school at the start of September, as well as new members of the teaching team. We’ve also introduced a new project called ‘The Water Lily Project,’ with the children. This provides children and staff with opportunities for reflection - and an opportunity to ask questions about life and what is important to us. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful piece of artwork completed by Frankie Church, wife of Curate Rob, which we are using as a cover for our Water Lily books - and Poppy has worked with some of our children to create a beautiful Water Lily ‘stained glass window.’ We look forward with optimism and hope to the term ahead. Our Year Six pupils have started their final year at St. Mary’s with their week’s residential visit to Morfa Bay, where they participated in abseiling,
St Mary’s CE VA Primary School assault courses, cycling, archery and body boarding. We have Harvest Festivals to look forward to, school trips and sporting events planned. On the 16th of October we will be holding an Open Day for any families who have children due to start school next year. Prospective parents are invited to come to school at 9.30 am, when you can meet me and listen to a presentation about the school, our values and our aims and then have a tour of the school with pupils, governors and staff. Tetbury and District Football Group Last Walks for 2019! Another summer has passed, and this month marks the end of the program of walks organised by the Group for 2019. It has been a good and varied season of walks, with a range of lengths and difficulties, and good support from both members and visitors alike. The weather has also been varied, from hot, (perhaps too hot on one occasion!) to cool and damp - but it has only been really wet on a very few occasions during the time that we were walking. If you have been wondering whether to walk with the Group, then give us a try this October and join in one of the last five walks for this year. Tetbury Bowls Club What a lovely season we have had! Plenty of friendly games in warm sunshine – how quickly we forget the rain! All our club competitions are now finished and we’re looking forward to our Closing Gala at the end of September and our Presentation Evening meal. We’ll be receiving all the lovely, shiny trophies we’ve won, on the 12th of October. Fundraising for our Club House development with disabled facilities is going well - we have almost reached the halfway mark against our target of £60.000. As part of the fundraising we will be holding an Open Bowls Auction on the 21st of September, with a game of bowls in the afternoon followed by a barbecue, then the auction. We are delighted to be joined for this event by the Tetbury Lions, who are always good company and great fun. A massive “Thank you!” to all those Tetbury folk and local businesses, who have provided lots for our auction. We’ll let you know next month how it all goes.

Last month we kicked off the season with the drama “Red Joan.” I’m sorry to have missed it. This month, on the 16th, we are showing the Danish thriller, “The Guilty” (cert 15). Consigned to emergency dispatch duties whilst awaiting a disciplinary hearing, Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren,) receives a call from a frightened woman who claims to have been kidnapped. When the call is suddenly disconnected, Asger takes matters into his own hands…! On Wednesday the 23rd of October we will also be screening our fundraiser in support of Longfield, “Sully: Miracle on the Hudson” (cert 12A). Tickets cost nine pounds and can be purchased from the Longfield charity shop on Long Street. It’s not too late to join as a member. Just come along and Carol will help you. It’s been busy down at the Shed this September! The Parkrun every Saturday morning is proving to be a real success and Sasha and her team in the Whistle stop Café are kept busy serving up some very tasty bacon rolls to attendees…

26 As soon as the runners have come through, then Ros from Aunt Addies’ can set up her stall of fresh vegetables and the queue very quickly stretches the length of the Goods Shed. Keeping her company is ‘Volunteer Supremo’ Jill Dodge, supported by a loyal team of helpers selling beautiful bunches of flowers and other items, and raising valuable funds for the Goods Shed. We are very grateful for all their hard work. We depend on our volunteers in so many ways: helping in the café, ensuring our many and varied events run smoothly, manning the steward’s desk in the foyer answering visitor questions, or helping behind the scenes - be it decorating, gardening or moving equipment and staging about. They are a vital and important part of our success and we thank them all. If you feel you might want to come along and join a really great team of people, we would love to hear from you. Our Wednesday afternoon tea concerts are back, to the delight of many. Every week a different performer - sometimes a duo or even a group of musicians - play to an enthusiastic gathering, who are enjoying the chance to get out, meet friends for a chat and have a nice cup of tea. The ‘Just Jive’ team of Jimmy and Sarah have returned for their autumn season of dance classes every Tuesday evening and are as popular as ever. There cannot be many in Tetbury who do not know Dr Tony Walsh - retired town GP and a Feoffee. He is also something of a history buff especially the history our town and it was great to spend an informative hour or so as part of the Heritage Weekend when he took the audience through the origins of Tetbury, the various influences over the years, how the Feoffees came to be and the reasons why a pair of dolphins are used as a symbol of our town. We aim to bring a wide range of music and entertainment to the Shed – ranging from folk, to jazz through classical and rock. Comedy and theatre are also on the menu together with informative and entertaining talks not forgetting our weekly Cinema. Do you try to use local suppliers for your materials?
Yes. All my suppliers are local. Having worked in the area for over fourteen years I have some wonderful contacts – it’s great to keep all the business local.
How big an area do you cover?
About thirty miles. For example, I have regular clients in Cirencester and Corston and enjoy the range of grounds I attend to. I’m also fortunate to have regulars very locally, as little as two minutes away.
Have you ever rescued any wildlife, while at work?
I always try to be as considerate as possible and to make sure I don’t disturb nests; I keep an eye out for hedgehogs during bonfire season - and generally I’m mindful of nature and how I need to work in harmony with it. Part of the job!

Westonbirt Shopping Fair – supporting local charities - has changed dates this year to Wednesday the 30th and Thursday the 31st of October. There’s a slight change of name too, to ‘Westonbirt Shopping Fair’ from ‘Charities Fair,’ to better reflect what the event is all about. It is one of the only fairs in the country that gives all its profits to charity. Tetbury WI Summer may be fading, but the WI programme for autumn started on a high, with Danielle Mills giving an inspiring talk about Medical Detection Dogs. These dogs help with the diagnosis of illness, using their powerful sense of smell. Dogs detect smells at a very low concentration, and this has proven highly useful in the early, noninvasive detection of diseases, saving many lives. Each dog takes four to six months to train at the Head Office in Milton Keynes. Danielle went on to speak about Medical Assistance Dogs, which are trained to work on a one-to-one basis with an individual who has a life-threatening illness, such as diabetes or epilepsy. The dog spend 24 hours a day with their partnered owner, to alert them prior to an event, giving them time to gain assistance or medication. This
talk was very well received by our members with many questions from around the floor. Our Gala night followed later in the week, and sixty of our members gathered at the restaurant at Steepleton. After a welcoming

Ali has organised a Supper Club event in October with an evening booked at the Snooty Fox. As we are a large institute these smaller groups allow for more intimate chats, offering an opportunity to build on friendships forged at the monthly meetings. The Snooty Fox is also the venue for our monthly coffee mornings; these casual drop-in events generally take place on the 4th Monday of each month, with the next scheduled for Monday 28th of October from 10.30 am. Do drop in - we’d love to see you there. Tetbury Library Our library will be festooned with knitting and crocheting again this year, for National Libraries week from the 7th to the 12th of October. This is due in the main to our lovely ‘yarn bombing’ group, busily creating magnificent pieces and decorations. It is truly an amazing sight to see - and there are so many wonderful things to spot. It’s well worth a visit. If you are inspired by the decorations, why not give it a go yourself? The group is open to everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you have no idea how to do it, or whether you are accomplished. You would be welcome. There is usually cake and coffee too! The theme for this year’s Libraries Week is the digital world. Lots of things are done online now, so if you would like to learn a bit more about using email, shopping online, keeping safe online, or anything to do with using a computer, simply book your free slot with our computer buddy on 502258. For an early year’s practitioner observing and learning about the habits, preferences and behaviours of a child becomes even more important when that child finds expressing them very difficult. Playgroup staff are also now halfway through four evening sessions of Paediatric first aid training.
Our Autumn term is in full swing, with lots of new starters and younger children moving up from our creche. We have been busy settling them in, helping them to explore their new surroundings, investigate new toys, and gently ease into their routines. One of the most popular areas of our playgroup room has been the role-play corner; over the summer holidays we recycled our plastic food-play toys and brought in a lovely new wooden kitchen set, which the children love. A much-anticipated part of our daily routine is ‘snack time.’ All children are provided with a balanced mid-morning snack including toast, using bread kindly donated by Hobbs House Bakery, a piece of fruit or vegetables, and milk or water. To support development of their independence we encourage them to spread their own butter on the toast and pour their own drink - and they wash up their plate and cup, and recycle any leftovers in the food-waste caddy. During September all our staff, together with staff from St. Mary’s playgroup, were joined by a Senior Educational Psychologist, who delivered training to help us work with children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It was a really insightful session, where previously complicated terms and labels were clarified, ways to provide a more enabling environment for children with the disorder were discussed, and further pathways to support opened up. One particular insight was learning about ‘Theory of Mind’ – this is our ability to understand that people all have different beliefs, thoughts and intentions. Theory of mind is usually developed during early childhood, for instance in learning that others don’t like the same foods that you do, that a friend’s favourite colour is different

All of the youth coaches are fully qualified FA coaches; part of our investment in the children’s learning and development and many congratulations are due to our newly-qualified FA coaches, who took their courses over the summer. They include Victoria Kennett, who becomes our first female coach, (U11 “Sentinels,”) which we hope will inspire many more mums and girls to take part in the game. Especially following the fantastic world cup performance from the England Ladies team in June. We now have the ability to take children from aged four upwards - with teams in structured leagues from U7’s right through to U16’s, so we have a great opportunity for kids of all ages to come along and take part - a great pathway into senior football. Tetbury Town seniors have already begun their season after their brief summer break and have reason for optimism – and all three teams have now kicked off their league campaign with ambitions higher than the last. After the successful County Cup campaign for the first team, all three sides will look to run deep in their respective cup competitions, which begin in early October. The second team under manager Benj Spragg will look to be finishing in the upper half of their league, whilst promotion is a more than realistic aim for Dave Udall and his third team after narrowly missing out last season.

U3A Tetbury’s new U3A is hitting its stride! The summer saw several committee meetings and much ‘behind the scenes’ administration to set up efficient communication systems between members and leaders. One or two groups held their first meetings in August, but most picked up their batons in September and now have schedules of dates in diaries until the end of the year and beyond. The range of interests is extensive (over twenty-nine now,) and can include any subject for which a member has the expertise to lead an informal group. The Boules group got off to an early start, with enthusiastic new members playing informally with a view to more serious action later. The next monthly talk will be at the Goods Shed on Thursday October the 17th and will be given by Douglas Looman about the work of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Doors open at 10.00 am for a 10.30 start. The talks are open, admission free, to members only and it is still possible to sign up on line at tetburyu3a.org.uk You can also collect a membership form from the Town Hall, or come to the talk and join at the door for the annual fee of fourteen pounds.

Having read the Mayors August report I am appalled that the town council appear to be distancing themselves from the plight of the Wednesday and Friday Day Centre. This is effectively a small enterprise with turnover of approximately £22k and an annual deficit of £10/12k. The mayor stated: “This is a valuable community facility, which supports not only the clients, but their families for fifty weeks of the year - and one which we do not wish to lose, like many other towns in the area have.” One might imagine then, that the Council would provide some financial support from the Tetbury precept, (which incidentally is increasing significantly because of the number of new houses,) and/or by using the Section 106 monies we hear so much about. Is it the best the council can do to suggest establishing a Community Enterprise Company, with all the associated costs?

Dear Editor, In April of this year, the Tetbury Lions Club helped send me off to Athens, to volunteer with Medical Volunteers International (MVI). This is a small charity that since 2016 has provided free medical care to refugee in Athens, Lesvos and Thessaloniki. The conditions treated range from the coughs and colds and small scrapes that are often a result from living in tough conditions outside - to more serious conditions such as depression and psychosis. As a medical student I knew that my skills were limited, but my curiosity and drive was not - and I soon saw that the single most important thing we can all do is to treat these people with the dignity that they deserve. Although this doesn’t solve all their problems, it is a way of giving them little moments of joy and hope away from their situation.
