Young by Name The Reluctant Murderer “I have a no-murder policy,” said the tall, softly-spoken man in black. If, like me, you were obliged to sit beside him for the next hour, would you be reassured by that remark, or alarmed? What if that statement had a similar impact to those “Keep off the lawn” signs that make you want to do nothing so much as kick off your shoes and run barefoot across it, desperate to feel the cool blades of grass tickling the soles of your feet? Or to those tantalising signs in the swimming pools that list all the things that you’re forbidden from doing: “No diving, no bombing, no running”, etc – I’m sure you can reel off the list as well as I can – at the same time helpfully providing a clear line drawing, showing you exactly how to commit each of those offences. Having a murder policy of any kind might even exert the power of suggestion, in the same way that the instruction “Don’t think of oranges” immediately makes you think about oranges.
It’s All About the Context Of course, context is all. If the man’s statement had been an unsolicited chat-up line in a wine bar, or his opening gambit at a speed-
HEAVENLY
dating session, I would have been worried. What else might he have up his sleeve? “I have a no wife-beating policy.” “I have a nocoveting-my-neighbour’s-ox policy.” As it happened, it was music to my ears, as what had brought Darren and I together was an invitation to speak on a panel at the Oakwood Literature Festival in Derbyshire last weekend, and he was describing his approach to writing his psychological thriller, “Child Taken”. As I am a writer of crime novels that are more Miss Marple than Nordic Noir, I really have to force myself to kill people for the sake of the plot. I’ve even started describing myself to readers as “the reluctant murderer”, which no doubt comes as a relief to my

friends and relations. Listening to Darren, I was glad to know I wasn’t alone in my reluctance. So as introductions go, his opening line was much more innocuous than one might assume. Although it turned out his surname was also Young. Now that WAS creepy. The Lions Club of Tetbury held Wacky Races again on Bank Holiday Monday the 7th of May, and the event proved to be a tremendous success. The day itself was blessed with fantastic warm and sunny weather. Our guest for the day, BBC Points West Presenter Alex Lovell, was absolutely delightful, and clearly
enjoyed herself, staying with us for the rest of the day and making herself available to the competitors, the crowd and the organisers. The superb weather (a very welcome change) really encouraged record crowds to venture into the town to watch the teams steering their karts down a course made more difficult, this year, by the introduction of a jump or a chicane as an obstacle.
200 Club
This month’s £20 winners are Viv Shipman, Ros Tildesley, M Callahan and R Jeffreys, all local residents, or known to most of us. An annual payment of £13 buys you into the Lions 200 Club lottery - and we use these subscriptions to help local causes. You get the chance to win a prize! Application forms may be obtained from Malcolm at Tetbury Hardware. Watch out for the next announcement – it`s the quarterly prize of £100. Lion Crad
Regrettably this is my last Lion’s Den article, because I will be handing over the Presidency to our current Vice President Bill Walsh, from July. My year of office has been challenging, rewarding and extremely
Really brave drivers managed to go over the jump much to the enjoyment of the crowd watching and cheering. I really hope you all had a great day out. My thanks must go to Lion Tony Sykes and his team of organisers who along with a group of hardy volunteers (without whom we could not run such an event) including those running the additional car parks, enabled the day to run so smoothly. The awards ceremony took place at the end of the event and we were delighted to award the trophy for the fastest kart to Steve Thomas in C12. The Wackiest kart was that constructed by the Parry Clan and the winner of the junior prize was George Jaggers. All drivers received a medal, as recognition for enthusiastically taking part. I received many congratulations to the Lions Club for staging such a wellorganised event in Tetbury, some from people visiting our town for the first time.

In last month’s magazine Lion Gail North described how she is heavily involved in the Willberry Wonder Pony Charity. This charity raises money for osteosarcoma bone cancer research and puts on equine-related events and outings, for the terminally ill. At a recent Lions Club meeting it was agreed that we would donate £1,000 to this worthy charity. At the same meeting Richard Glanville became a new member of the Lions Club of Tetbury and we welcome Lion Richard to the club.
enjoyable. It has been a real privilege to preside over such a great club with some wonderful and supportive people, and I am sure Bill will have a very successful year. Steve Parr, President, Tetbury Lions PS: Should anyone be looking to install a stairlift soon, there is one available in Tetbury at no charge. It should be available in July, and will require that you arrange uninstalling, transportation and reinstallation elsewhere. If you are interested, please contact me on 07525 487870 for more details.

Tetbury Camera Club Shine the best light on your pictures Is it a drawing, is it a painting, or is the picture with this month’s Tetbury Camera Club article a photograph? Actually, it’s the latter - or maybe a combination of all three? Inspired by our recent article on “painting by numbers,” our chairman John Jennings decided to try and work some of his own photo editing magic on a picture – and this was the result, an image showing what a combination of all three visual arts looks like. There are different attitudes to photo manipulation; should you use the technology or just create them in the camera viewfinder, as was the case historically? There is no right or wrong answer - as with all art, the attitude to photographs is completely subjective and it has been for a very long time. One of the country’s best-known portrait photographers was Jane Bown, who worked for the Observer newspaper for more than fifty years. She hardly ever used flash and preferred to shoot in natural light. Using her creative eye and a combination of light and shade from a convenient window, she captured her sitters’ personalities with a skill most of us can only dream of. If you’d like to be impressed, do look at her work and form your own opinion. It’s at the completely opposite end of the creative spectrum to another great female
photographer called Annie Liebowitz. An American, Annie has worked for publications as varied as Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. While Jane Bown travelled light, with just a small hand-held camera and some rolls of film, Annie Liewbovitz is well known for highly crafted images often created in large studios, with the help of a small regiment of assistants, set builders and a battery of lights. Having said that, there are tips and tricks that can be useful in helping us all achieve better images if we want to. After painting by numbers, here are a few other tips which could be termed “photographing by numbers.” One of the most commonly quoted is “the rule of thirds,” which is simply one to help you stop, think and consider the image you will capture before you shoot. To use it you simply mentally dissect the shot you are taking into a grid of nine boxes; three
across and three vertically, then align the features in the picture to help balance or enhance interest in them. For example, set the horizon along a bottom, or top line, rather than in the centre. If it’s a person who is the main feature of the picture, try placing them to the right, or the left, rather than centrally. Another useful tip, for this time of year, is to make use of “the golden hours.” This is a term used for the hour before sunset and the hour after sunrise, when you will often find atmospheric and diffused lighting. This can soften a picture and help make it look a lot more romantic or dramatic. It’s a time when you will likely see those keen on landscapes shooting their favourite scenes. If those sound like the type of images that would interest you, do feel welcome to join us for our weekly meetings at The Priory Inn from 7.30 pm each Tuesday. Iain Smyth, Tetbury Camera Club

Tetbury in Bloom Oh Those Summer Nights! This month is the busiest for the Tetbury in Bloom team. Not only do the hanging baskets arrive, with the ‘Day Team’ delivering them to the shops and residents that have ordered them, but they also take delivery of those that go on the lampposts, assisting the Council groundsmen to install them. Around the town there are thirtythree flower beds and forty-two troughs and tubs to prepare, in readiness for the entire ‘In Bloom’ team to come out each Tuesday and Thursday evening, to help plant up the summer displays. It’s a huge operation which takes the entire month to complete, but the result of adding all the summer bedding provides an immediate splash of colour that continues right through to the end of summer. I hope you agree: it is well worth all the effort. Historically associated with bold formal displays in public gardens, we use summer bedding less formally at the front of borders
and for filling in the bare soil under the many shrubs. It’s like painting with plants. The smell when planting the geraniums, conjures up memories of my Dad, who grew his cuttings on my bedroom window sill… Happy memories, but not one of my most favourite fragrances! Sturdy, sun-
loving geraniums are well suited to hot, dry conditions and flower all summer through to the first frosts; they are the perfect plant for the flowerbeds and tubs in Tetbury. Begonias are one of the most versatile summer bedding plants, well-loved by my Dad for their large flamboyant blooms in a wide range of colours. Because of their ability to thrive in sun or shade, we use large-headed varieties in our hanging baskets and the smaller ‘semperflorens’ varieties in some of the shadier locations. Antirrhinums are another family favourite from my childhood. Appreciated for their architectural flower spikes and incredibly long flowering period, they add height and interest to a number of Tetbury’s flowerbeds. In next month’s issue of the Tetbury Advertiser, look out for our advert regarding the Tetbury Open Gardens Day where eight local gardens will open to the public between 1.00pm and 5.00pm on Sunday 29th July. There will also be more details in my article and nearer the time on our website www.tetburyinbloom.org.uk Happy gardening, Liz Farnham

Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun Marbles I was instructed to attend a learned legal fellow, to assess his mental capacity, without which his signed will would be open to challenge. He was signing a third codicil, which in effect was an addendum to his will. Invariably with passing years one’s assets can be depleted, and the generous thoughts of one’s youth might become impracticable later, when there is immediate family to consider. It was this very point that was relevant because the solicitor, who had drafted the third codicil, feared that certain intended beneficiaries might challenge it – either because of
“undue influence from the family,” or on the supposition that the gentleman amending his will was so deranged that he did not know what he was doing. Some beneficiaries - notably charities - can be very difficult or litigious.

He said he had enjoyed the recent publication of “the Secret Barrister”, a sad commentary on the present deplorable state of our legal system. So far so good. But when it came time to sign the codicil, we both appreciated that since we were in the country and miles from anywhere, there were few witnesses to call upon.
• EMPLOYMENT • BUYING AND SELLING A BUSINESS • PLANNING PROBLEMS • TAX PLANNING
Mrs Watkin offered to be the second witness, as she was not benefitting from the third codicil, but my suspicion was that as the point of the third codicil might reduce other legacies, that consequently she would be disqualified as a witness. Otherwise she would have been fine especially if I had known the contents of the earlier testamentary documents.

The recipient of this particular visit, who we shall call Watkin, had returned from a hospice. When I arrived, there was a call from the head of the “Bertie Wooster” society, who was preparing Watkin’s funeral oration. I was led up to his bedroom where he was sitting up in his green pyjamas, having made what I assumed to be a remarkable recovery. This would not be good for assessing his mental capacity, because some learned fellows live in that rarefied atmosphere of fantasy land and he could perhaps have thought I was a litigant, so I advised Watkin that I had come to report “on whether or not he had lost his marbles.”
Eventually the codicil was signed, although Watkin executed the document as if he was signing a court order - i.e. in the wrong place – and we then had a dispute resulting from his desire to charge downstairs in his pyjamas to chat up the new witness! I threatened him by saying that if he continued to insist in doing so he would get into severe trouble with Mrs Watkin, and that I would have to reconsider whether he had indeed lost his marbles. He got his way though - and was indeed duly admonished by Mrs Watkin. In many ways, with modern technology for storing data, codicils are pointless. If the original will were to be reprinted with up-to-date amendments, the beneficiaries would never have known about the intended reductions. A high-spirited Watkin in a state of recovery would be more difficult to assess than Watkin in a hospice. Eccentricity is fine; delusion is dangerous, where wills are concerned. Due to popular demand, there has been a small change in the youngest age group; the theme of the fancy dress is still “Super Heroes,” but it will now be for 2- to 5-yearolds. For the 6- to 9-year olds, the theme is “Film Characters,” and for the 10- to 14-yearold entrants the theme is a 1918 military one, or something from the fashion of that era which commemorates the passing of 100 years since the end of World War One. Don’t forget that the prizes are fantastic! 1st Prize is £25, 2nd prize £15 and there’s a 3rd prize of £5 in each category - plus winners get a certificate, so it really is worthwhile taking part.

News from St Marys’ Church Choir. Arrive half an hour beforehand for a practice, and then boost our singing. All are welcome! In other news, we are delighted that our Curate, The Rev’d Rob Church, will be ordained priest on Saturday the 30th of June at 3.00 pm in Gloucester Cathedral. Do go along to support him at the Cathedral – and then come to his First Eucharist on Tuesday the 3rd of July at 7.00 pm in St Marys’ Church, with a party on the Vicarage lawn afterwards. It will be a great celebration – and Rob will then have two more years with us to complete his training. Wacky Races provided both a brilliant community day and lots of fun! Many congratulations to all involved.
I thank God for the BBC’s “Songs of Praise”! It is a great way to share the wonderful hymns that are part of our heritage, and which continue to be written today. It’s a sort of shared poetry - or shared prayer. The English fashion designer and businesswoman, Vivienne Westwood, once said: “Being part of a community with a church at its centre and singin’ hymns is a great thing to do.” And I know lots of people would agree. As summer arrives, St Marys’ will fill again and again with wedding guests – and music will be at the heart of the celebration: the organ fanfare as the bride enters; popular hymns from school favourites like “One More Step along the World I Go” to roof-raisers like “Jerusalem”. And it’s the same for other important life events – from christenings and funerals to gathering as a community on Remembrance Sunday or for Christmas celebrations - and week in, week out on Sunday mornings. Our hymns are at the heart of all our services.

So, on Sunday the 6th of June at 6.00 pm we’ll be celebrating all of this with St Marys’ annual and traditional “Friends of the Choir” Choral Evensong. Our Festival Choir will be singing and it’s a beautiful service, not to be missed. Do come along – and perhaps become a Friend of Tetbury Choir if you’re not one already? Or be inspired to sing with us? The Festival Choir is trained for major festivals through the year by the talented composer and Choir Director Ian Higginson. Then on the third Sunday at our 10.00 am service we have a “pop-up” Congregational
Finally, some more words of wisdom and encouragement from our lovely young people. This month they are written by Yana and Daisy: “We are all unique, celebrate our differences - be thankful for who we are, all over the world! We should be there for each other, when we need a helping hand.” With love and prayers, Poppy. The Revd Poppy Hughes Rector, The Benefice of Tetbury, Beverston, Long Newnton and Shipton Moyne

Tetbury Art Society May was a busy month for our society. On Wednesday the 2nd of May our monthly meeting featured Brian Jones from Avening giving a wood carving demonstration, then, over the long Early Spring Bank Holiday weekend, we held our Spring Exhibition in the Tetbury Market Hall. And there is more to come in May after the date
of writing this article - but that will have to await the next issue of the Advertiser. Starting with the wood carving demonstration, Brian arrived complete with wood to carve, tools, a portable workbench and lighting. He told us that on leaving school, he had entered the printing trade as a compositor, which led him into an interest in letters and typographybased graphic design. Later, he combined woodworking and calligraphy into the carving of such things as house signs and mirror frames. Brian starts by hand-drawing the required letters on paper, for example in Roman square capitals or in italics, and then the letters are traced onto wood ready for carving with his set of well-maintained and beautifully polished chisels. This must be done with care and, in places, the use of techniques to prevent some individual cuts from splitting the wood. Brian did this for fifteen years before retiring. The preview of our Spring Exhibition was held on the Friday evening preceding the holiday, and guests included the then mayor, Stephen Hirst. The exhibition was open to the public from the Saturday until the Monday and people came along ‘in ‘clumps’ as usual – giving us a quiet spell and then a sudden influx. We sold fourteen pictures, which was very reasonable although still a little down on our average. Voting slips were handed to visitors for them to choose their favourite picture, and at the end of the exhibition it was found that Gill Ashley had amassed the most votes – well done Gill.

Tetbury Town FC reached the climax of their season… …during the weekend of Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th of May 2018 – the Annual Presentation!
On Friday evening, we celebrated our U10’s, U12’s, U14’s and U16’s, with a more formal event, including a nacho station, music and dancing. On Saturday morning, our younger members - Tiny Tigers, Tigers, U7’s, U8’s and U9’s - enjoyed fun and games against mums and dads with lots of parents choosing to wear fancy dress! Every player received a trophy in recognition of their contribution and commitment during the 2017/2018 season, and individual trophies were presented to commend those who demonstrated values during the season based on commitment, attitude, performance and respect. As always, these award decisions weren’t made lightly. The senior presentation took place on Saturday evening; everyone enjoyed a Hog Roast and were entertained by local band ‘unDISCOVERED’. All three senior teams finished the second half of the season strongly and we were impressed by the quality of young players breaking through to the senior squads. We can all look forward, then, to building on this next season. I would like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work to make these presentations such a success. But everything doesn’t just stop here, as planning is already underway for next season and beyond. The 2018/2019 season will be an exciting one, as we continue to grow our club and its reputation as one of
Tetbury Town Football Club the best in the area. Next season we will once again look to provide football for all age groups, from aged three to adults. This will involve over 200 children participating in football - a fact of which we are justifiably proud - and the continued development of the membership of our senior squads. With a fantastic spirit and a family atmosphere being built at the club, I am looking forward to a terrific season, and beyond! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the club members and local traders who have helped us move forward, in a relatively short amount of time, through all the work which has also been done off the field, building the foundations of our longterm future. Togetherness has been shown - along with great patience and support for the club. A lot has been achieved so far, but with still a lot more to do, Tetbury Town FC will remain committed, focussed, strong and - most importantly - ‘together’. Look out for future developments, training dates and other activities taking place over the summer on our website www. tetburytownfc.com and social media pages. The Tetbury Trail The Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust has been working… …to extend the multi-user path known as the “Tetbury Trail,” that mainly follows the course of the old Tetbury to Kemble Branch Line. An agreement was made with Mike Tucker and a public bridleway was dedicated and opened across his land in November 2016. Since then, the Trust has been working with both the Duchy of Cornwall and Gloucestershire County Council, to create a bridleway along the Duchy’s section of the old railway line. On Wednesday the 11th of May we were informed by the Duchy’s solicitors that the deed of dedication was complete and that their section of railbed was legally now a public bridleway. We are grateful to His Royal Highness and the Duchy for granting this right of way.
The small section of land that connects the end of the Duchy’s section of railway line to the Trouble House was kindly donated by Patrick and Joanna Keen and has already been dedicated as a bridleway. This links up with the existing bridleway which runs along the left of the Trouble house and then angles off to the right to meet the road between Culkerton and Cherington. Cyclists can now turn left when they get to the road and after half a mile meet the NCN 45, which they can follow to Kemble Station and Cirencester. The Tetbury Trail now stretches for three miles from the Malmesbury Road to the Culkerton-Cherington road and can be used by walkers, riders, joggers and cyclists.
We intend to lay a crushed limestone surface, like the original cycle/foot path section, which will be suitable for all users and particularly for people in wheelchairs and those using mobility scooters. Ever since the old branch line closed in 1965 the railbed has been used informally by local people for walking, riding and cycling. Unlike the Nailsworth branch, the railbed was sold off to individual landowners, and four years ago a large fence was erected near the Trouble House to stop people travelling further along the line towards Culkerton. If you have used this section of the railbed in the past, please get in touch with Paul Lockley via telephone on 01666 503785 or email paul_lockley@hotmail.com Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust

The fun continues on the 16th of June with Elvis McGonagall – stand-up poet, armchair revolutionary, comedian and broadcaster and then on the 22nd of June is the Goods Shed Comedy Night. Saturday 23rd June brings something completely different! ‘Here Comes Trouble’ is a rigorous personal investigation into womanhood and Keira Martin’s individual identity, rhythmically weaving together traditional music, authentic song and gutsy dance. “Just Jive Dance Night” is back on the 29th of June, and the month draws to a close with the Cotswold Camerata performing Beethoven, Strauss, Brahms and Hayden on Saturday the 30th June. Our Cinema is open every Thursday starting at 7.30pm. Films this month: Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri, Darkest Hour, The Mercy and A United Kingdom. Puddle Ducks Calling all ‘Roundabouters’ and Puddle Ducks, past and present… As many of you will know, Puddle Ducks will be closing the door for the very last time on the 20th of July this year, however we really couldn’t go without saying “Thank you and Goodbye!” to all the wonderful children and their families who have been a part of our story over the last ten years - and part of the Roundabout Nursery Group for the ten-plus years before that. We are planning a ‘bring a plate’ picnic on the recreation ground on Wednesday the 11th of July, from 3.30 to 6.00 pm and would love any current or ex-Puddle Ducks and Roundabout staff, children and families to join us. We will gather at the Football Club end of the rec near to the Dolphin’s Hall car park, and have our fingers crossed for some lovely summer sunshine. Huge thanks go to Richard Norris for letting us use the amenities in the Football clubhouse - we really appreciate your support. Do come along if you can, and spread the word to all your old pre-school friends and families. We’d also really like to see any old photos that you have too.
But, of course, we are not done yet! There has been plenty going on to keep everyone busy and having fun at Puddle Ducks, lately. We have been making the most of our garden with bug hunts and planting and enjoying going out without the need for coats and wellies. Inside, the children have been busy creating a fantastic spring display for our wall and adding to it each week. It’s a real masterpiece. In the months between January and July we run special pre-school sessions for those children who will soon be making the transition to primary school, to help them prepare for some of the new challenges that lie ahead for them. They have all been fantastic at getting changed for PE (something their future teachers will be very pleased to hear!) and have been enjoying the slightly more structured games and activities. As the weekend of
the Tetbury Wacky Races approached, we thought we would try our own version, and held the Puddle Ducks “Wacky Relay”! The children who will be moving on to St. Mary’s have had several opportunities to visit the school. We joined the reception classes for forest school and found out how to make a paintbrush out of the natural materials we found lying around. We also had a chance to explore the classrooms and play area and, finally, we celebrated the Royal Wedding by joining the whole school for a picnic celebration. We would like to thank the staff of the foundation stage for providing the children with these opportunities to become familiar with the school before their big move. As this article goes to print we will have one half-term left to enjoy – and we intend to make it one of our best, so watch this space! Puddle Ducks

Computer Advice Windows 7 support ends in eighteen months – get a Windows 10 upgrade for free! The official cut off for the free upgrade was a couple of years ago, but it is still possible to get one now. To put this in context, Windows 7 will be no longer supported in a year and a half’s time, so if you think you would like your current PC or laptop to run on longer than this, then I would recommend you seriously think about a free upgrade to Windows 10, whilst it is still possible. Don’t worry that you will not be able to cope with the new version, as I can make it look and feel much like your current system. The same menus, your favourite card games, such as Solitaire and Free Cell and a photo viewer/editor just like the ones included with Windows 7 and older. You can still access all the new Windows 10 features and you can use either the new or old menu style, the choice is yours!
requirements are pretty much the same as any computer that is currently running Windows 8, 7 or even Vista. Hopefully you are not still using the latter as it went “end of life” well over a year ago, but although the minimum hardware requirements for all these versions of Windows are very similar, I would recommend upgrading to at least 3GB of memory. If your existing system is running fine, but slowly, I can breathe new life in to it by installing a new solid-state hard drive, combined with Windows 10. This can revitalize an older machine and it is certainly cheaper than replacing it. Most systems that you can buy at the budget end of the market have very small drives, with your data having to be saved on the cloud/internet. I can fit a much bigger drive which you can use to install all your

A Marathon Month It’s been a busy month for the Tetbury Dolphins Running Club with a record number of runners successfully completing marathons and ultra-marathons, all over the UK. And two of Tetbury’s finest athletes took part in this years’ London Marathon! Susan Rawle and Fiona Dougan represented the Tetbury Dolphins Running Club on 22nd April, completing their run on the hottest ever marathon day. Despite recent injury and no training, Fiona was the first over the line for the Dolphins in under 5 hours. She even had
time to stop for some vital physio at various points on the course! Susan completed the course in just over 6 hours. An incredible achievement and an emotional day for everybody involved. Susan was running for the RFU Injured Players foundation. The Running Club have close ties with Tetbury Rugby Club and have spent the last four months fund raising for their chosen charity, raising £2,646.78. Amazing. Feeling inspired by the club’s success in London, Nick Moore, Lisa Mustoe, Sarah Cromarty, Caroline Hill-Trevor and Steven James all successfully completed the Newport Marathon. The team had been
Tetbury Dolphins Running Club through some intense training, led by coach Steven. Their hard work and determination certainly paid off. Nick Moore, who only started running a year ago, finished the course an hour quicker than expected, crossing the finish line in 3:31. Sarah and Caroline crossed the line with their coach Steven shouting them on all the way in 4:13, closely followed by Lisa in 4:35. Two weeks after the London Marathon, Fiona then went on to complete the Belfast Marathon with a new personal best of 4:13, along with fellow Dolphins Fraser Mackay and Penelope Mackay who also achieved a new personal best of 4:15. Meanwhile, in the Brecon Beacons, Darren ‘Flipper’ Mustoe took part in the Ultra Marathon. A seriously tough trail covering thirty-three miles of ups and downs over the Brecon mountains, finishing in 7:53. The running club caters for all abilities and started its most recent ‘Couch to 5k’ programme on the 10th of May. The course has been a huge success over the last 18 months and is aimed at complete beginners. Give it a try! Many House Points were earned, and all Houses won the House Points trophy the next week because of the tremendous efforts they had made on their ‘Clean Up mornings’. Another group of workers organised refreshments for their team and everybody appreciated stopping for a short break to enjoy the sunshine and admire their hard work.
At Leighterton Primary School we have sorted all of the children into four Houses… … Dragonflies, Foxes, Owls and Snakes. All of the children from the same family are in one House. We are all busily preparing for the ‘Grand Opening’ of our new school extension on Wednesday the 23rd of May, when Adam Henson from BBC1’s “Countryfile” will be coming to celebrate the opening of our new classrooms and entrance. To prepare for this, each House has taken turns to come in on Saturday mornings and has helped to tidy up in school. We called these ‘Clean Up mornings’ and they have been very successful at both preparing for the opening and in bringing people together to

In some weeks there have been as many as thirty people helping, and they have made a huge difference. Some of the jobs that they have been doing are rubbing down the metal railings and repainting them, gardening (which has included weeding and planting), creating a Year 6 privilege area, washing the signs, painting wood preserve on to the fences and power washing equipment. The House Captains had a long list of jobs
Leighterton Primary School is very smart now and everybody is looking forward to welcoming the invited guests and showing them around our wonderful school. The children will be performing dances and people will be making speeches before the red ribbon is cut by Adam Henson who will officially open our new building. After that, complimentary cream teas will be served to all of our guests and the children will enjoy a picnic with their families – who have all been invited - in the marquee that will be erected on our school playing field. We hope the sun will shine on our special day and that everybody will be impressed by our new building. By Will and Dora If you would like to find out more or come and look around Leighterton Primary School, you are very welcome to contact Miss Stark or Mrs Davey in the school office on (01666) 890273 and we would be delighted to show you round at a convenient time. Some glorious weather prompted Flossy and me to seek out a ‘meal with a view’… …and it took only seconds to think of The Crown at Frampton Mansell. As ever, I phoned too late to get an evening reservation. However, if we were prepared to take a punt, they said, arrive early and we might get a table outside, which aren’t reservable. There’s no waiter service outside but that was hardly a problem.
Eating Out
Perhaps it was too much sun, but we took the gamble. Unsurprisingly, given the warmth and blue skies, the outside tables were also full when we arrived. There were some spaces, but Flossy’s reluctance to share meant we got a drink and sat inside. Then she made an inspired suggestion: sit outside on the wall so we could pounce if a table became vacant… and, after about twenty minutes, success! The menu was interesting: some pub food standards, of course, but several dishes, like the smoked haddock, leek and pearl barley risotto with poached egg starter, or venison
meatballs, wild mushroom gravy, thyme crushed potatoes and spring vegetables, were imaginative and appealing. The specials board boasted soup-, fish- and sausages-of-the-day and several other fishbased dishes, including prawn cocktail – not something I’d considered ‘special’ since my younger days at Berni Inns! Flossy’s starter of welsh rarebit on toasted sourdough with rocket and watercress ‘lacked sufficient mustard’ but was ‘passable’, she said, somewhat haughtily. I chose the ‘duo of goat’s cheese, port roasted figs, red wine shallots, lambs lettuce and a mixed nut crumb’, which was delicious but small, the ‘duo’ being two crispy-crumbed balls of cheese, each the size of a Subbuteo ball. Still, they were hand-made… Flossy followed with sweet potato falafel, grilled vegetables, vinegar slaw, homemade wrap, apple tzatziki and humous. She felt the falafel were a little under-spiced and the veg seemed a bit ‘uncared for’, to use her phrase, but it was a cheery, interesting plate (the curly endive providing some comedy moments) and the wrap was very tasty – though the side of chips was a welcome addition, size-wise. Being a sucker for a good piece of fish, I chose the special of brill, oyster sauce, potato dumplings, peas, asparagus and lemon and cucumber dressing. The fish was lovely - maybe a little over - and the dumplings, sauce and dressing were platelickingly moreish… which, sadly, Flossy wouldn’t let me do. Ho-hum. Anyway, given that brill is an expensive fish (I’ve paid well over £20 for a piece), it was good value, too, at £16.75.

Though Flossy was full, I couldn’t resist the Shipwreck Tart dessert: basically, treacle tart with nuts and rum. Well, I say that… it was more like rum tart with treacle and nuts, with rum and raisin ice cream. Sweet, deep-flavoured and heady with rum, it was wonderful. With a couple of drinks, it came in under £60. Sure, I’ve had cheaper, but with a warm evening settling into the valley, it 260313 Wayne Hardiman:1090406 Wayne Ha was definitely worth it. Fill

Probus Not since 1066… …has our country been occupied by a foreign power, but on the 19th of April we were told by a first-hand observer what had happened when Germany invaded the Netherlands on the 19th of May 1940. Hermine de longh, the daughter of a Dutch pastor, was almost six years old when she saw paratroopers descending on The Hague, where she lived. The initial apparent friendliness of the invaders led to increasing harshness, particularly against the Jews. She told us all Jewish professors were dismissed, and lecturers in fields such as arts and music were required to conform to strict regulations. Eventually, all Jews were sent east to concentration camps such as Auschwitz. Increasingly, the impositions were stepped up. Houses were searched for anything of value. Conscripted labour was sent to Germany, civilian travel was curtailed, and gas supplies failed. Civilians contravening
occupation regulations were liable to be shot, and Dutch cattle were also shipped to Germany, severely depleting home supplies. Food hardships led to near-starvation in some areas, only relieved in part by RAF Bomber Command dropping food parcels as the Allies moved progressively across the Netherlands between June and September 1944. Hermine mentioned in particular the

No such hardships were involved when fortytwo members, wives and guests enjoyed an excellent lunch at the Minchinhampton Golf Club on the 26th of April. Our chairman, Malcolm Lomax, welcomed our guests, thanked all those who had undertaken duties for Probus One during the year, and highlighted notable events. Gerry Churchard described to us in detail, on the 3rd of May, the precision low-level bombing raid on the 18th of February 1944, coded “Operation Jericho.” Eighteen Allied Mosquito bombers, accompanied by thirty Typhoon fighters, breached the walls of Amiens Prison in Germanoccupied France, to try to facilitate the escape of three to four hundred French resistance patriots being held there prior to execution. As a result, two hundred and fifty-eight escaped (only for one hundred and fifty-five to be recaptured the same day), and one hundred and two were killed, together with thirty guards.

ill-fated battle of Arnhem, which had been supported by the Glider Pilot Regiment from Down Ampney airfield. It was a fascinating and sensitively-told story of increasing deprivation during a ruthless occupation.
Gerry described the detailed preparations which were made for the raid at very short notice, despite reconnaissance flights having been completed fifty-eight days previously - and how the precise time of attack at 12.00 pm was essential to ensure all the prisoners were in the exercise yard. The aircraft flight paths and damage caused were all well-illustrated with film excerpts. Strangely, this brave and successful raid was not reported publicly until eight months later. But the Air Ministry will not comment further - and all records have disappeared. Was it really necessary? Who requested it? Or was it part of the overall plot at the time to confuse German authorities about our likely invasion plans? It remains a mystery. Now we look forward to being told about an auctioneer’s lot on the 7th of June - and, on the 21st, how health care in the UK has evolved from 1900 to the present day. Since Scouts returned after the Easter Holiday they’ve had a fun evening up on Minchinhampton Common playing wide games. Harry also took the opportunity to attend two expedition training weekends and successfully achieved his Expedition badge. The Scouts also had an evening at Penn Wood, our District campsite, where they cooked a selection of meals on “Triangia” stoves, both as training for lightweight camping and to taste the type of food you would take on an expedition. The food was very quickly consumed at the end of the evening, although some dishes were tastier than others – indeed, one dish was humorously compared to ‘cat sick’. It’s rather worrying that one of our scouts knew how that tasted! The Scouts are now starting to prepare for the camping season, with a couple of camps being planned. There are more details to follow, but let’s hope they have now learnt how to ensure the food is nice! #skillsforlife Finally, as a District we celebrated St George’s Day with a short hike up to Baden Powell copse on Rodborough Common. This was a great opportunity to celebrate all things Scouting – and yes, to also get some free ice cream! Happy Summer days! Girlguiding is keen to ensure that the views of our young members are always heard, and several units have been taking part in a survey called “Future Girl”. The results are on their way to HQ, and we all look forward to receiving the special badge as a thank you for taking part. The girls discussed issues that affect them from bullying to animal cruelty and Donald Trump to girls’ rights.
Please continue to put your Tesco blue tokens in our slot in the Tetbury store. We are hoping that every unit can benefit by offering them an adventurous activity later in the year. Rainbows started the term with a games evening and Rhiain led her first Promise ceremony with Elsa, Daisy and Martha making their Promises. As part of the Future Girl badge they have made rockets to zoom into the future! 1st Brownies have been out and about on a walk around Tetbury and have had a chocolate challenge evening. 2nd
Girlguiding Brownies spent a lively evening at Kingsley House planting up some beds to create some colour for the residents. They worked hard and were delighted to catch up with Trish Dent, our previous President, who is a resident there. 1st Guides have started the summer term learning about fire lighting – the first activity was making edible camp fires – this went down really well after an evening spent concentrating on the Future Girl badge. 2nd Tetbury Guides have been reinvigorated with 10 new girls – most of whom have transferred from our Monday unit. They were also caught in the woods fire-lighting and enjoying making and eating dampers. They are pleased to have welcomed Gabs as a new leader. Our leaders work really hard to ensure the girls have exciting meetings, but we could really do with another leader in each of the Brownie units and the Rainbows to help with planning and organising. It really is great fun and the adults get a lot out of volunteering too! Sue Doidge, Girlguiding Tetbury District Commissioner girlguidingtetbury@gmail.com

The wonderful Malthouse has had repairs to the roof, guttering and areas of loose mortar, and more repairs to other areas of the building will be happening shortly. This has been made possible due to the fundraising done in 2016 - but the full makeover will have to wait, due to lack of enough funds at present. Research is being done toward making the building part of a charitable organisation, but finding the right way is important. The Management Committee are working tirelessly for the good of the building, its users and those who hire it for classes, and they are welcoming new classes to use the halls. Anyone interested should email tetburymalthouse@gmail.com The Scouts and Cubs, under the leadership of Tom Glover, are going from strength and are enjoying the space on the 1st floor, although at this time of year they can spend more time out of doors, and the Guides have recently conducted their usual very successful book sale.

Mayor’s Piece
given me the opportunity to meet many superbly interesting people, some of whom have recently come to live in our town in the new housing developments and some who have lived in the town for many years. They all have one thing in common - they praise our town for its friendliness and the great community spirit that exists.
Goodbye and “Thank you!” to Cllr Stephen Hirst… I must clarify something that has confused some people who read my Mayor’s Piece, in May. I did say that the Tetbury British Legion branch had decided that they could not continue and have had to wind down their activities; this was only the local branch. The British Legion Poppy Appeal and the Service of Remembrance continue - and indeed this year, 2018, which is 100 years since the end of World War One, will see special events happening in Tetbury. Jane Haines will most definitely carry on organising the very successful Poppy Appeal, as she has for some years, and nearer the time will be seeking volunteers to sell poppies in Tetbury. Many people are continuing to knit poppies, which will form part of special displays in the town to commemorate the end of the Great War. I am writing this article under false pretences as I am no longer the Mayor of Tetbury, my term of office having run out on Monday 21st May. I am being succeeded by Cllr Sandra Ball who held the post some years ago and is well known. I am confident that she will once again do a good job.

Secondly, I am pleased to confirm the appointment of Darby Law to the Thirteen, who we welcome. We look forward to working with him on our many projects in the town.
Over the last month or so we have seen a number of changes in the Thirteen, firstly Pam Bird – our hardworking and historically, the first woman in history to be voted as a member of the Thirteen – decided to stand down after eighteen years. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Pam for her contribution to our work in the town and particularly The Market Hall over this time. Pam has been presented with flowers and the Thirteen of Tetbury Emeritus, along with a farewell afternoon tea at the Close Hotel.
Many of you may not realise that the Feoffee have several parking spaces available for rent in the town, both in The Chipping and at the bottom of Gumstool Hill, for which we hold a waiting list. Recently an opportunity has come up for one space at the bottom of Gumstool Hill and if you are interested in renting this, please contact us via our website. Finally, we hope to meet you at one of our events over the summer months, the dates of which are given below: 29th June, 6.00 pm Barbeque on Millennium Green
8th September - Beating of the Bounds 15th/16th September - Heritage Weekend If you want to know more about us and the work that we do within the town and grants available, please speak to any member of The Feoffee or Thirteen, or check out our website www.thefeoffeesoftetbury.co.uk and we would be pleased to hear from you if you have any projects which you feel may be of interest to us. Unsung Hero
Dear Editor, I’d like to recommend a tireless worker for the town who has been around for a very long time now, Mr David Hicks, for your column. Could you please make him your “Unsung Hero” for June? As well as working hard and cheerfully for the Tetbury Lions for many summers, until recently taking a very active role as the “Welfare Officer,” Mr Hicks is also a very studious member of the Feoffees, having first been one of “The Thirteen,” which he joined in 1986. I often see him now looking after the Market Hall, which he obviously regards as a great personal responsibility, since he’s forever sweeping up around it, making sure the lights work and the building is presented as well as it can be. As well as serving both the Lions and the Feoffees well, Mr Hicks is also generous
with his time personally “doing anything for anyone who asks.” He’s a proper asset to the town and I hope you’ll look on this request with favour. Yours faithfully, Name and address withheld Ed: I’d be very pleased to have ‘Orse contact me soon, so I can ensure he receives the voucher for a meal for two at the Priory Inn, which he’s definitely earned. Even though members of the Lions don’t usually accept personal gifts, I hope he will! Many thanks to Rob Goves of “Relish” for providing it. If there’s someone you know who repeatedly contributes selflessly to the community, then please do let me know - my details are on page three of the magazine. They certainly don’t have to be a Tetbury Lion, although I’ve enjoyed making this exception…

Tetbury WI It’s been another busy month for the ladies of Tetbury WI. Several of our members headed to Bristol for a night out of tasting and blending gin; wonderfully educational and great fun too. Our thanks to Roger for driving us all safely back to Tetbury. Our enthusiastic skittles team made a valiant effort when playing Kemmerton WI, which provided an enjoyable defeat… Once again, our Supper Club have been out and about, this time more than twenty members had an excellent evening at the Snooty Fox. Of course, the Snooty
Fox remains a favourite for our monthly coffee mornings, the next of which is on the 25th of June at 10.30 am. Last month’s occasion was interrupted by an electricity outage, but of course our ladies carried on regardless and enjoyed the regular chitchat and catch up that is such an important part of this event. They were rewarded with power returning in time for the coffee, too. Our May monthly meeting provided three of our members an opportunity to share some of their life experiences with us, on our “Meet a Member” night. We heard all about life as a young girl in the Liverpool fire service in 1960’s England. One member told us a family tale of how her aunt left religious life to marry her uncle - who also left his order to be with her. And in keeping with the diversity of our club, we then enjoyed a make-up demonstration which left one of our group fresh-faced and ready
for sleep. The evening was topped off with a much-anticipated exhibition of the skills of Tetbury WI’s very own Ukulele Group. We have lots of events planned in the coming months. The next club meeting is on Monday June the 11th with “Gimson and the Barnsleys at Sapperton”. Our WI members are from Tetbury and the surrounding villages and meet at the Dolphin Hall on New Church Street. We welcome anyone who’d like to come along and join us. Finally, Tetbury WI (in association with Tetbury Lions,) would like to warmly invite residents to an Open Meeting at 7:30 pm on Monday the 9th of July at the Dolphins Hall, to hear Mark Weir talk about “Men in Sheds”. There is no charge, but donations would be gratefully received! Jennifer Walsh, Tetbury WI

History of Tetbury Society On the 3rd May Barry Barnes told HOTS about his Army experience. He joined the Army as a boy soldier and, initially, went on a two-year course at Tenby College to gain the Army First Class Certificate. He then had a choice of three Regiments and decided to sign up for The Royal Horse Guards. He served twelve years, but in 1967 Government cuts resulted in a merger of the Royal Horse Guards and the Royal Dragoon Guards and he decided to leave.
He found that the senior officers were from aristocratic families, but that life for Troopers was ‘cleaning, cleaning, cleaning.’ He also went to barracks in Knightsbridge, where those performing the ceremonial duties in Central London were posted. It was particularly hard work to clean the dress uniform. After rain, the breast plate became covered in spots that had to be polished out and the sopping wet fur was difficult to dry. He was told not to worry if you were not too sure of the various manoeuvres, because the horse would know exactly what was required. He became an Armoured Car Driver as part of the Rapid Deployment Force using ‘Ferret’ Scout cars and affiliated to H.M.S Albion, the Commando Carrier. He took part in ‘Operation Starlight’ in Libya. There were exercises on Salisbury Plain and in Scotland – a long journey driving in convoy at 30 mph! However, the experience he really wanted to tell us about was his posting to Germany in 1962, with the British Army of the Rhine. He was housed in a former German Panzer Barracks at Herford near Hanover at the time
of the Cuban Missile crisis, so the defence of Western Europe from the Russian threat was high priority. They took part in NATO exercises and were trained to drive Saladins and Saracens armoured vehicles. Winter of 1963 saw Barry patrolling the armed border with East Germany, a 10-metre-wide area of uncultivated and mined ground with barbed wire fences, stretching from the Baltic south. There were Watch Towers at intervals, and villages in the east were occupied by East German Troops. He had photographs of check points, with East German frontier guards ensuring that nobody could cross. Officers weren’t allowed to show any indication of rank or regiment and Barry said they all had to be most careful not to disclose any information, when talking to civilians. There were animal deaths, such as when deer ventured into the minefield, and he showed us a photograph of the grave of a journalist shot by the East Germans. Barry gave a very interesting and well-illustrated talk. On 7th June we visit Cricklade, but we have been asked to restrict numbers. Alan Twelvetree, Tetbury History Society

His first posting was to the Household Cavalry Barracks in Windsor. He took a taxi from the station and marched proudly through the main gate to be brought to a halt by a Sergeant Major loudly calling “Have you read the notice at the gate?” He hadn’t - The Royal Horse Guards was further up the road!

Tetbury Town Council Tetbury Town Council is celebrating the award of ‘Quality Gold’ status under the Local Council Awards Scheme. The award scheme is a national one, open to all 10,000 parish and town councils in the country, with assessment carried out by the various county associations representing the parish sector. The Town Council submitted a lengthy written portfolio earlier this year, and the Validation Panel for Gloucestershire visited Tetbury on the 1st of May to interview the Mayor, two Committee Chairs and the Town Clerk.

The Panel stayed for two and a half hours and asked a range of probing questions to test whether the Council genuinely met the criteria. They visited various Council projects too, to look for evidence that we are serving the Tetbury community to ‘Quality Gold’ standard. Councillor Stephen Hirst said “The fact that the Panel visits applicants and spends quite some time asking very probing questions gives us assurance that the award scheme has genuine value, and is far more than just a ‘feel-good’ or ‘tick box’ exercise.”

There are fewer than forty Quality Gold Councils in the country - and only five other Councils in Gloucestershire have that status. And we have achieved a first – Tetbury is the first in the Cotswold District to get it. Stephen Holley, Town Clerk

Tetbury Nursery Playgroup It’s snowing again at playgroup, but this time it is blossom blowing from our tree! The children have enjoyed gathering the blossom off the ground, taking part in “blossom-craft” activities and making potions in the garden. Now we are getting nicer weather, the greater part of the sessions/learning is taking place in the garden. During the Easter holidays, staff reorganised the garden and set up a planting station which has proved popular –
and already we have planted bedding plants in tyres, grass seed in shallow trays and inside herb seeds, which will be put outside once they have taken. The children are very good at ensuring the flowers outside are watered, using their watering cans and obtaining water from the water butt. Aside from the planting activities we are using our outdoor resources to work on our counting and number recognition skills.
carriage out of boxes, with some degree of success, and using lots of glue. At pre-school the children have had the opportunity to do a “Welly walk” with their parents, and have as a group gone to visit the primary school, looking at the classrooms and other facilities the school offers. They have just introduced the “Take Home Bears,” so we’ve been getting some lovely pictures and tales about the adventures the bears have had with the families.
Before the half term, our craft centred around the Royal Wedding. We made bunting and flags before the event and then after the weekend the children were able to re-enact what they had seen on the television or in newspapers. We even attempted to make a
“Play and Stay” is continuing to go well - the children have enjoyed gluing with coloured sand, painting activities, and the opportunity to use our parachute outside. In the crèche the children are having the opportunity to do craft work including painting, and even the babies get a chance to explore paint. They are also joining us in the garden, where they particularity like to sit in our sand pit - so lots of sandy nappies! As a playgroup we are very proud to announce that we have once again achieved the “Bristol Standards Quality Assurance” certificate. This enables us to continually reflect on and improve the quality of our practice, which raises the outcomes for the children. This was completed with lots of hard work by all staff, especially Linda Selwood, who collates and puts the folder together. If you wish to contact us about any of our facilities you can do this by ringing 01666 504855 and asking for Karen or Linda or by email on tetburynurseryplaygroup@ eygloucestershire.co.uk. Tetbury Community Choir On a warm spring evening in April, we presented our Spring Concert in Tetbury Goods Shed. It was well attended and seems to have been enjoyed by all, including the choir! The feedback from those present has been very positive, so all the hard work was worth it; even the rather tricky “Seal Lullaby” was successful. We all breathed a sigh of relief after that particular piece. We were extremely lucky to have the very talented and experienced mezzo soprano Domingo, among many others. Her other Maria Jagusz as our guest soloist. Maria passion is sharing her vast knowledge of has had a varied and successful career, singing with others, and she holds regular performing with &many famous singers 22:05 150208 Maths English 22/2/08 Page 1 workshops. Hopefully we will be able to incorporate this knowledge into our singing at the next choir event. Do come along and join us for a practice session, you can just sit and listen if you would prefer to do that. The first two sessions are free “tasters” so, be brave! It is a good idea to let us know if you are coming, then we can make sure that you are given any help you might need. We practice on Monday evenings at the Goods Shed, and sessions begin at 7.00pm and finish at 9.00pm with a short interval of around ten minutes. St Mary’s CE VA Primary School At St. Mary’s CE VA Primary School, we are committed to ensuring children stay healthy and happy, and at this time of year we use our fantastic school grounds and facilities to give children plenty of wonderful opportunities to learn outside, to play and to develop the healthy habits which we hope they will take with them, as they move into the next phase of their education. In recognition of the work the school does to promote healthy lifestyles, we have recently been awarded the Gloucestershire Schools “Healthy Living and Learning” Award. This award celebrates the excellent teaching of personal, social and health education - as well as recognising the good work schools do in promoting healthy eating, exercise and both physical and mental well-being.

So, the children at St. Mary’s only eat healthy snacks - and chocolate, sweets, cake, crisps and biscuits are saved for very special treats, only. Children are also encouraged to drink water throughout the day, and we aim for every child to complete a ‘daily mile,’ which involves walking or running around the school field each day. We find the children are far more settled and focused when they come into class, if they have completed their daily exercise and have had healthy food. Just before half term we held a well-being week for the whole school. Instead of teaching our normal daily mathematics 1200917 reading and writing, the children experienced a rich and varied curriculum of sports such as rugby, mountain biking, skipping workshops, zorbing and rugby.

Tetbury Town Football Club coached the children at the Recreation ground, and we learnt how to play frisbee and cricket. Dystonia Awareness Day: Elise Fullard, one of our Year 10 students, independently organised a fundraising day at SWR. She’s an incredibly brave and strong young lady who suffers with a disorder called Dystonia and as part of Dystonia Awareness week, we held a non-uniform day on Friday 11th May, where each student could pay £1.00 and wear a green item of clothing. Students and parents also donated cakes for a very popular cake sale with all funds being donated to Dystonia Awareness.
We are extremely proud of Elise’s resilience and independence, which helped her to raise £500 for Dystonia Awareness in a single day. Please use this link to find out more information about the Dystonia Society. https://www.dystonia.org.uk/

FIVE MILE PICTURE FRAMING
Sir William Romney’s School would like to take this opportunity to pay our respects and remember one of our former teachers. Harold ‘Danny’ Drinkwater has recently peacefully passed away at his family home. Former staff and students may recall that Mr Drinkwater was appointed as Head of Art at Sir William Romney’s School in 1961 and taught at our school for 25 years when he retired in 1985. Mr Drinkwater was a passionate supporter of the arts, both in school and across the local community, and will be sadly missed by all. On behalf of the entire Sir William Romney’s community, we would like to pass our condolences on to Mr Drinkwater’s family and friends and thank him for his inspiration and commitment to art, our students and our local community. 340208 Piano Tuition

The sun has brought a smile to everyone’s faces, including those of the children, and the summer term is now in full swing; this term has seen us have some new additions to Playgroup, with the arrival of twelve eggs that are being incubated, providing the children the opportunity to see week-byweek changes, using a light to see into the eggs (a process called “candling”).As the photo shows, today we saw the magical arrival of three baby chicks. What a birthday treat for our Playgroup Leader, Heidi Baliey!
The children have also been looking at plants, flowers and vegetables and drawing what they see - a very interesting activity for them, with plenty of colours and shapes being shown. They have also planted their own beans and watched them grow, ready to take home to continue with their growth. They’ve also had plenty of water play, enjoying the water pumps and water stations. This term we will foster lots of talk about summer holidays, ice-creams and the beach, in our role-play area. The Pre-School children have enjoyed
St Mary’s Playgroup introducing the younger age group to Forest School and were very good at following them and telling them the rules in this area. The pre-School children have also started some taster sessions at “Big School,” and look forward to sports day and a teddy bears picnic soon. They have also started to have a PE session on a Tuesday; their independence skills are progressing very well. As always, thank you for your continued support in fundraising - we had a sweet stall at the Tetbury Wacky Races, largely organised by Holly Bell and with a handmade cart, which I am sure you will agree was fabulous, from Tim Shute. In 2018 the Seedlings group continues every Monday morning from 9.30 to 11.30 at the front of the Christ Church. It is run by our lovely mum and Playgroup Deputy, Kelly, who offers fresh and exciting activities each week, as well as a welcoming smile to greet everyone through the door. All ages and stages are catered for and everyone is welcome, so please drop in and join the fun. Avening Primary School Avening School gets out and about! With less than two months until the end of term, school is busier than ever with a lot of time being spent outdoors. The Hawks class have been busy with a Quad Kids sports event at SWR where they really got to put into practice the strong team working skills that they learn in class. Thank you must go to Reverend Gerald who recently spent an afternoon with the Hawks class giving them a personal tour around Avening Holy Cross Church which they found incredibly interesting. Later on in the term they look forward to a class visit to the Cheltenham Science Festival. We also have the school sponsored walk coming up in a couple weeks which the entire school will participate in along with some parent volunteers and the odd
canine companion or two. The Owls class have had a busy time lately with the Y6s coping amazingly well during SATs week. The entire class are looking forward to taking part in a junior engineering workshop challenge later in the month run by STEM Works.

Our very exciting news is that our resident master of sports, Mr Wilkinson, recently entered a competition run by the BBC and won first prize! He sent in a photograph of our pupils doing “Supermovers,” which are videos to teach pupils maths and English skills while being active. Having won first prize in the competition, school will be visited by the one and only PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL TROPHY! We are understandably very excited about this and will be taking lots of photos on the day that it arrives so watch this space! A team of children are looking forward to flying the flag for Avening school in a couple of weeks at the annual Tetbury Woolsack races which we compete in each year and showcase the children’s incredible teamwork skills and determination.

Avening WI
many years ago, when a lady moved to the area from Avening. We are hoping that they will be able to visit us later this year. Hurray! We won the preliminary round of the County Cup skittles against Randwick WI. The match was very friendly, and we are now looking forward to the next round against Tibberton and Taynton WI in the north of the county. It will be played in Painswick, to suit both teams, later in May.
We are having our usual busy time in Avening WI. Our April walk was blessed with a clear warm day and we could appreciate the views across the Severn Valley to the Brecon Beacons on one side and across the Nailsworth Valley to Rodborough on the other. Lunch was taken at the Fieldfare Café near Nympsfield, once again enjoying the views, sitting with our five dog companions in the spring sunshine. In May, our walk will be around Preston Park in Tetbury, with lunch at the Royal Oak.
Our speaker at the May meeting was Rita White, who had spent her career as a member of cabin crew. She had progressed to become in charge of all the training in safety procedures for cabin crew with British Airways. A big responsibility! We enjoyed learning about a subject we all take for granted when we fly. Our June speaker has entitled his talk “Get off my land”!
Our Spring quiz was a great success, with lots of prizes for the winning teams and the supper demolished to the last crumbs! We are sending £200 to Longfield from the quiz proceeds.
Following the talk a few months ago by Celia Hargrave about the development of
A party embarked in three cars to Staunton and District WI north of Gloucester, to join them at a tea party to celebrate their recent 80th birthday. The event took place in a barn attached to the farmhouse owned by one of the members. The barn was used by the local community for classes, hand bell ringing, the choir and all sorts of events. We had a walk around the lovely garden and then listened to a talk, illustrated with slides, by the farmer - showing how the ŝƌĞŶĐĞƐƚĞƌ ĞŶƚĂů WƌĂĐƚŝĐĞ family farm had evolved under their care. We had an excellent afternoon tea. Our WĂŐĞ ĚǀĞƌƚ ^ƉƌŝŶŐ ϮϬϭϴ sĞƌƐŝŽŶ Ϯ association with Staunton WI was formed
her beautiful garden in Sheepscombe, a large group of members visited the garden. Finding the garden was tricky and even the trusty sat-nav sent us to another house. Having found it eventually, Celia made us very welcome. The garden was delightful set on a south facing slope with stunning views. After strolling around it, we had tea and cakes on the terrace and returned with lots of plants to remind us of our visit. We have our aprons at the ready for a busy time on the catering front. A tea in Cherington, a lunch in Avening and the usual cream teas at the Avening Village fete on June the 10th. Plans for the supper at the group meeting are well in hand, when we will entertain Tetbury and Kemble WI’s on the 21st of June. Fortunately all this activity will be followed by our summer outing to Savill Gardens in Windsor when we shall not have to provide any food! Shirley Hand, Avening WI

News from Christ Church be starting at the Goods Shed at 2.00 pm on Sunday the 17th of June. It’s only three miles, so why not join us? It is an idea of Pope Francis’ who said, “Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age.”
We took our Eco Church commitment a few steps further, by planning to see how we can encourage more wild flowers and wildlife in our graveyard at the bottom of the Chipping Steps. We also agreed to twin our toilets with toilets in a developing country. It’s a good plan to promote sanitation and health care and you can find more information on the initiative at www.toilettwinning.org
We also decided to take part in the National Weekend of Invitation in June, to invite friends and family who have drifted out of the habit of coming to church, or never been in the habit, to give us a try and see if the worship of God can bring a spark to some more people’s lives, as we feel it does for us. We’ll be doing that on Sunday the 10th of June at 10.30 am, our normal service time.
At the meeting we agreed to join the “Share the Journey” walk in solidarity with migrants and refugees around the world. Organised mainly by St Michael’s CAFOD group, we will

Tetbury Footpath Group The first “Tetbury Walks Festival” weekend took place at the beginning of May,
If you are not a member and would like to walk with us, then please contact the leader of the walk that you are planning to join, before the day of the walks. All walks start from the long-stay car park by the Goods Shed off Cirencester Road. The walks use mainly footpaths and tracks and may be muddy and there may be stiles to cross. People walk at their own risk. Details of the Group’s walks program can usually be found in the Tetbury Advertiser or at other local outlets.
Tuesday 26/06/2018, 10.00 am, Cars needed, we will be following Laurie Lee`s Wildlife Way which is rather strenuous, but the views are wonderful., Length: 5.00 M 8.00 KM, Level: C, Leader: John Burton 505777.
Ian Thomas, T & DFG Committee
Walks Program for June 2018: Levels: A = easy to D = hilly Tuesday 05/06/2018, 10.00 am, Cars needed, A walk around the rim of Minchinhampton Common to take advantage of the beautiful views all around., Length: 5.00 M 8.00 KM, Level: A, Leader: Kevin 505357, Optional stop en route for Ice Cream. and, as is the way of the British - my first comment must be that “the weather was not ideal.” It was cool, cloudy and windy, but fortunately it did not rain significantly during our walks. Over the days from Friday to Sunday, six local walks of differing lengths were organised by the group and led by members. They were supported by a good number of people, (particularly on Sunday,) who do not normally walk with the group - both Tetbury area residents, and those from further afield visiting Tetbury. Despite the gloomy weather people seemed to have enjoyed the walks and were pleased that they had come.
Tuesday 12/06/2018, 10.00 am, Cars needed, A walk in and around the lovely Lasborough Valley, Length: 4.50 M 7.25 KM, Level: B/C, Leader: Nigel 503076. Tuesday 19/06/2018, 2.00 pm, walk past the Sewage Works, on towards Eastcote Grange Farm, up Long Furlong Lane and down to Beverston Road and crossing the fields into Tetbury via Newleaze Gardens, Length: 4.00 M 6.50 KM, Level: A, Leaders: Chris & Shirley 502164, All are invited to Tea afterwards but please. advise Shirley by 18th.
We had big brekkies, bridge parties, church collections, coffee and cake, house-to-house collections, lunches and street collections in Christian Aid Week, with different things happening at different times throughout Tetbury and the surrounding villages. I’ll be able to let you know just how much we raised to help the poorest people in the world in next month’s Advertiser. Meantime, thank you to everyone who helped in any way, and of course thank you to all those who gave. It’s not too late to give if you missed all of these and want to contribute! Many thanks, Alison Hesketh, 10 The Green.

Before and since that weekend, the group have continued with our normal program of walks every Tuesday. Our walks have been varied, so far between four and seven miles fairly flat - and up to six miles with rather more “ups and downs”. This is normal, as we try to provide a variety of walks in length and degree of difficulty, on differing routes. Some members walk with the group nearly every week, others less frequently, but all are welcome, as are new members who would like to join us.

Share the Journey
Share the Journey in Tetbury! Come and help us to walk 24,900 miles - the distance around the whole world. Why? It is an act of solidarity, to “share the journey” with our global neighbours, who are fleeing their homes. Every step we take together will send a message to world leaders that they must step up too - and endorse ambitious new UN agreements on refugees and migration in 2018. We believe that no matter where we come from we are all connected as children of God. This initiative has come from Pope Francis in 2018. The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), Christian Aid and Tetbury Area Churches Together (TACT), with the support of the Tetbury and District walking group, are organising a walk to take place on Sunday the 17th of June at 2.00 pm, meeting at the Goods Shed Car Park, Tetbury. The walk will be along the old railway line and return by a parallel lane. It is three miles, approximately.

Tetbury Police Museum & Courtroom Good news! I am pleased to report that the Town Council have appointed Maria Marsh as the new Honorary Curator, to take over from me. Maria is an experienced curator, having held the position at the Athelstan Museum in Malmesbury; she is a member of the Museum Association, the South West Federation of Museums and Art Galleries, the Council for British Archaeology, the American Institute of Archaeology – and she is currently working toward her Associateship of Museum Association qualification. We are extremely lucky to secure her services for the museum! Now, another Cold Case file for our avid readers:
Shocking suicide at Tetbury, 1887 On the 18th of November, a most determined suicide was committed by Henry Cuss, of the Eight Bells Inn, by drowning himself in the reservoir under the cellar. The deceased had been “queer in his head” for a considerable period, and during the last week of his life his wife was anxious about him and feared he would do something rash. When it was discovered that the deceased was in the reservoir, the fire engine was got out and set to work to pump out the water,
but it was about an hour before the body could be got out. The reservoir is 11 feet deep, and the opening was only 20 inches by 11 inches covered by a board, which Cuss had removed. The deceased was a stoutly built man, 54 years of age, and must have made a considerable effort to get through the opening. The inquest was held at the Police Station on Monday last, by Mr Coroner Ball; Mr J. S. Brown being the foreman of the jury. Mrs Cuss, the widow, deposed that at intervals during the last four years the deceased had complained of pains in his head, and more especially during the last week. On the 18th instant, at 6.30 pm he said he wanted to go into the cellar to stop a leak in the tap, and she accompanied him, and told him to not to get into the reservoir. The deceased and witness returned from the cellar together, when the former said he would go to bed, but they went into the back room together. At that time Mrs Sweet went to the tap room for some ale. While witness was drawing the ale, the deceased quietly opened the cellar door and went down. Witness heard him in the cellar, and at once went down, but being quite dark she could not see nothing. She went upstairs and called for John Cleaver who went to the cellar. Mrs Sweet deposed that she saw the deceased going into the cellars whilst she was waiting for her ale. Cleaver proved going into the cellar at the request of Mrs Cuss, taking a candle. He

found the board removed from the reservoir, and the deceased’s hat and jacket near. He heard deceased in the water, and tried to get him out, but could not reach him. The jury, after a short deliberation, returned a verdict that deceased committed suicide whilst in a state of unsound mind. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday was attended by the Foresters of the Tetbury Court. Chelworth Bookworms “Housekeeping” by Marilynne Robinson Ruthie and Lucille first arrive in Fingerbone when they are left without warning on their grandmother’s doorstep. A small town, notorious for a rail disaster many years ago, but little else, Fingerbone is defined by the dark lake and tall mountains that surround it. Indeed, the cold and the water seem to suffuse and absorb everything – including the girls’ mother who drives her car into the lake without a backward glance.
to fit in and leaves the ramshackle house as soon as she is able. Ruthie, however, is a loner who worries that she is too much like Sylvie. Eventually it becomes obvious that Sylvie does not know how to keep house or look after a child and the townspeople seek to rescue Ruthie from becoming a transient like her aunt. What starts as a beautiful and evocative description of time and place, gradually turns darker and more foreboding as Ruthie becomes haunted by the past and

The girls seem to accept their new life without complaint, but when their grandmother dies too they wonder who will look after them now. After a brief spell with some maiden aunts, it is their mother’s sister, Sylvie, who arrives to take over. However, a transient used to riding the railroads without possessions, she appears other-worldly and always seems to be on the point of leaving. Indeed, it is more often the girls who look after Sylvie rather than the other way around. At first inseparable, the girls explore the lakeside at the expense of school. Selfsufficient, but aware that they are different and separate from the rest of the town they gradually begin to want different things. As they grow, Lucille becomes desperate
those lying at the bottom of the lake. Housekeeping split the book club 50/50 – half of us loving the beautiful language, the other half disturbed by the looming presence of the lake, which was almost a character in its own right. Read it for yourself and decide.

Tetbury Cares What have we missed out? Well, of course, a holiday is not the same without some good food! A three-course lunch is provided in the middle of the day, with a traditional ‘tea’ later in the afternoon. No one goes home hungry! The project is staffed by over 40 volunteers and the whole day is provided FREE to all our 60 guests. This is due largely to the generous sponsorship of the project by Tetbury Feoffees we have been grateful for other private donations as well. We really do appreciate all the donations and support.
Holiday @ Home 2018 – in our 14th Year! The Holiday@Home project is organised and run by Churches Together in Tetbury (TACT,) and is well established in Tetbury. This is a simple idea to provide a one-day holiday for, usually, those more elderly members of our town unlikely to have a main holiday, or just don’t get out as much as the rest of us, either because of age or disability.
or just a chance to chat. Photo displays of times past provide the start of plenty of memories and conversation. We usually have a good sing at some point - some of the old songs are never forgotten. Various other entertainments and Time for Thought carry on through the day, until guests are taken home (with a ‘goody’ bag) at the end of the afternoon.
