Young by Name Guys and Trolls “We don’t do Halloween in our house, because it’s all about fear and ingesting too much sugar,” said a friend of mine, halfway through October. With two children under five in her household, the second point alone was something to fear. While her comment didn’t lead to my cancelling the Halloween party I’d promised my daughter (13), it did remind me that prior to becoming a parent, I’d been anti-Halloween too.
Who’s that Guy? Even so, when I was a child, we never celebrated Halloween. My first taste of “trick or treating” was when I spent a year in the USA, at the age of eight. No-one over there had ever heard of Guy Fawkes Night. “Fireworks,” they told me, “are for the Fourth of July, not the Fifth of November.” Back on home turf, we resumed our annual family Guy Fawkes parties. As a child, chucking an effigy on a bonfire and watching it burn never bothered me. These days, that spectacle horrifies me! Even if Guy Fawkes was caught red-handed in the act of attempted mass murder, burning him in effigy for hundreds of years afterwards is hardly a civilised response. It’s not far removed from re-enacting a public hanging with a mannequin, or seeing a dressmaker’s dummy hung, drawn and quartered…
Variation on a Horrid Theme These days most Guy Fawkes Night parties have moved away from the original cast, losing any historic justification in the process. Some communities even have elections to choose who to burn in effigy. I daresay there will be plenty of Donald Trumps atop our nation’s bonfires, this month. I’d preferred Guy Fawkes Night, believing it to be a more patriotic tradition, until I discovered recently that Halloween was a British export to America.
I hadn’t realised how strongly I felt about this issue until I read a request from our local Fireworks Party committee. They wanted the scarecrows from the recent
village scarecrow trail, so they could use them to grace this year’s bonfire. I was aghast, and not just because four new IKEA lime-green blankets went into the giant “Very Hungry Caterpiller” in our front garden. Most of the other scarecrows were equally lovable figures, including a sweet elderly couple with a zimmer frame, outside the local retirement home. I imagined local children being traumatised by seeing their favourite storybook characters go up in smoke - their parents worrying that granny had wandered into the danger zone by mistake. So, my vote goes for a humane rethink of Guy Fawkes. By all means, keep the bonfires and the fireworks. I’m even happy for you to make a Guy. But when you’ve finished, please don’t burn him at the stake. Just chuck him in your cellar, lock the door, and throw away the key. Or export him to the States to stand as President. They could do with a good guy as candidate. Debbie Young, www.authordebbieyoung.com @DebbieYoungBN

With the holiday months largely behind us, October has been yet another busy month for the Lions Club. A group of us went across for a joint meeting with our neighbouring Lions Club in Chippenham. It is always interesting to see how other Clubs operate and perhaps pinch good ideas for raising charity monies. Direct comparison is perhaps unfair, as Chippenham is many times larger than Tetbury – but we believe we compare well, of course! On 2nd October eight of us went to support our friends in the Rotary Club with their Horseless Team Event, held in the wonderful grounds of Badminton park. The weather was very kind and a good, if tiring, day was had by us all.
I was also pleased to go, with Dave Hicks, the Chairman of our Welfare Committee, to meet with Jon Bell, who is the new Head Master at Sir William Romney School. He is keen to encourage his senior students to build stronger ties with the local Community. Working more closely with Tetbury Lions may be one way to achieve this. A further follow-up meeting is planned to discuss practical ideas for future co-operation. Sadly, our regional District Governor was unable to visit us for our October Meeting as planned due to ill health. We wish him a speedy recovery from his operation and look forward to meeting him again later in the Lion’s year. As a charitable organisation, our worldwide motto is “We Serve”, and the Club does focus many of its activities on service to
Lion’s Den the community. However, there is time for social relaxing too, and in October, the Club enjoyed another outstanding Treasure Hunt, organised yet again to perfection by Basil & Judy Mason-Smith. Their knack for guaranteeing fine weather, a challenging route and a magnificent meal to finish is second to none. Well done, again! All the Lions were moved by the pictures on the TV of the hurricane disaster in Haiti and, at their last Meeting, immediately allocated £1,000 from reserves to be sent towards the Lions World-wide appeal. Because the Lions Organisation worldwide is so large, it was able to immediately send $1 million U.S. for relief purposes. As many of you know, we held a street collection on Saturday the 15th of October specifically for Haiti - and you generously gave us just over £300, which will be added to the £1,000 donation made by the Club. My thanks to the Lions who took part at short notice and to all of you who gave so generously. As I write, our annual Charter Night is looming, celebrating the charter undertaken to form Tetbury Lions fortytwo years ago. It is a great honour for me to be Lion President, particularly as this is the Centenary Anniversary for the Lions Organisation worldwide.

Cotswold Voluntary Wardens Stinchcombe Hill The Cotswold Way long distance path makes a circumlocution of the hill above Dursley, to take in the fine views. We have spent another session clearing a section of the route with saws and brush cutters to remove encroaching vegetation and to retain the views. On the adjacent golf course greens, we noticed a lot of scratching damage. The groundsman tells us this is done by badgers – and has never been so bad. Too many badgers and not enough food for them? What do you think?
Horsley Woods By invitation, we spent a session coppicing hazel in Horsley Woods, to produce stakes and heatherings. These will be used later, in the winter, both for our hedge-laying work and for hedging competitions. We also felled an ash tree which had become dangerous at the entrance to British School, Wotton-under-Edge.
walling stone from Knockdown Quarry and to take it to a field in Sopworth, to rebuild the field boundary wall around the stile itself. Others in our group used brush cutters to gather the overgrowing brambles from another footpath, as requested by the council.
Newark Park We have been doing more clearance work at Newark with brush cutters and other devices and we’ve erected new way mark posts for new circular walks on the site, for the National Trust These walks are fairly short, around two miles in length – but can be recommended for their views of a variety of stunning scenery through woods, sheep fields and gardens.

Mayor’s Piece This month’s Mayor’s Piece almost did not happen. Whilst undergoing a Windows 10 update a week ago, my laptop gave up the ghost and despite several attempts to restore the machine to health by a number of worthy experts, the last comment was ‘It’s had it’. During the week of attempted restoration, I had to make do with my ‘iPad’ coupled to a separate keyboard and a great deal of patience. Finally, the decision was made to buy a new laptop but the fun did not stop there, my new computer had to be set up to perform as required and this took even more patience before things were put right. It’s a bit similar with traffic in Long Street, where it will also take a great deal of patience to reduce the amount of heavy traffic using this important Tetbury thoroughfare. I have just read that congestion for motorists has jumped by up by 40% in four years. Don’t we know it. There is an 18-ton weight limit in this street and vehicles over this weight should not travel along it, but as we all know they do - and it’s high time that once again action is taken to reduce the number of heavy trucks. The voluntary Lorry Watch is once again being set up, whereby photographs will be taken of offending vehicles, the owners will be written to advising that their vehicle is breaking a traffic regulation, and they will be asked to desist. If a repeat occurrence takes place, the vehicle and the owner will be reported to the police. There are a number of local companies that are allowed to drive through the town, but these are the exceptions. We are also attempting to reduce the congestion in Long Street by reducing the number of vehicles that illegally park and those
that take a very long time to unload over the pavement. There are too many vehicles blocking two-way traffic in the street which causes long tailbacks in both directions. The Co-op delivery lorry is a constant offender and we are trying to achieve a change in its delivery times to early morning and evenings. Recent repairs have been carried out at the Hampton Street / Long Street junction. “Not before time!” I hear you shout. We are constantly reporting to County Highways instances of potholes and street lighting that has failed, in an attempt to maintain the quality of our roads. This is a never-ending job. Please do not hesitate to report road faults to the Council Offices. We log every situation to ensure that no repair requirement gets forgotten. Since my last Mayor’s Piece it has been revealed that the site in Bath Road that contains a 39-home development plan has been bought by Hills Homes of Swindon. Residents of Southfields and Longfurlong Lane must be disappointed with this news. There was a long and hard-fought battle to avoid planning permission being given for this site, so much so that the Secretary of State called in the plans and gave final approval for the development. Another development that has crept in recently, completing the new housing along Cirencester Road, is for 40 houses next to the Bovis Homes. Traffic along Cirencester Road gets busier and is becoming a rat-run to avoid Long Street. No doubt our Speedwatch team will be employed along here. In a month’s time Christmas will be arriving in Tetbury, the switchon Celebrations are on Thursday 1st December and plans are afoot to make this a great evening for all the family. See you there, you may not recognise me! Stephen Hirst, Mayor of Tetbury

Tetbury Camera Club faces at our meetings and we look forward to encouraging them to share their work with us as the weeks progress. Our 2016 chairman, John Jennings, has already been seeking to widen our horizons by organizing the first shoot we will have made as a group to Oxford. We’ll be aiming to find a platform for some of the shots that result from this outing in the coming weeks, alongside our regular Tuesday evening events, which have also had a stimulating start. So far we have had several interesting and entertaining presentations by some of the most skilled and highly regarded photographers in the south west region. We have also managed to squeeze in the first of our monthly competition, which was judged by Prof Bob Ryan, joint author of a stimulating new book called “The Master Photographer – From Good to Great”.
From Daylight to Darkness At the time of writing this, in mid-October, only six weeks have passed since the start of our new season, but already our group of photography enthusiasts has grown in size and we’ve been busier than ever. Here’s a small sample of what’s been going on. We began with presentations by about half a dozen club members showing examples of images from the fortnightly location shoots that had been organized in the summer break. These varied from a conducted tour by boat around Bristol’s floating harbour to evening visits to some of the most interesting, scenic and historical areas of the region, including Stroud, Chalford and Sevington. Behind the scenes, our webmaster, Steve Romain, has been busy revamping our internet presence, giving our web site a much more contemporary and informative layout, www.tetburycameraclub.org.uk In the weeks since the start of September we have been delighted to welcome five new members. It is always a pleasure to have new
Bob’s views on photography are always stimulating and constructive, so our competition entrants were delighted to hear him say that he’d noticed a great improvement in the quality of our images since his last visit to us, which was about two years ago. One of the shots he selected for an award is the portrait illustrating this month’s article. It was taken with just the available light coming through a sitting room window. It shows just what can be achieved with careful placement of a subject and control of a camera’s shutter speed and aperture. Looking ahead to November and the other end of the lighting spectrum, photographing fireworks is something many people like to try, but find difficult to capture. Here’s a tip from one of our members: Try setting your camera on manual focus and focusing on something in the distance before the fireworks start. Set the shutter speed to between a half and a sixth of a second and try to stay still. You might be impressed by what you can achieve! Avening School
and managed to raise a whopping £36. As they still have some Beano’s left, they hope to run another stall again soon.
Harvest, Half-Term and Halloween! The first half of Autumn term ended last month with our annual Harvest Festival, which was attended by parents as well as pupils and staff. Donations were brought into school for the very worthwhile charity Stroud Foodbank and will be delivered personally by members of our School Council at the beginning of November. Autumn term has so far been a busy one with school trips, workshops, sports events and an open morning during which prospective new pupils and their families visited our school and were shown around by members of our School Council and Year 6 House Captains. We received some truly wonderful comments in our visitors’ book, particularly about the quality of the guided tours! We had another reason to be proud of our pupils last month when two members of the Hawks class, Ollie and Louis, ran their own stall after school one Friday selling Ollie’s extensive collection of ‘Beano’ comics to raise money for ‘Best for Ben’, a campaign very close to our hearts here in Avening which is raising money to help a local family adapt their home after a life-changing accident. Ollie and Louis sold over 70 copies
Sport, as always, has featured regularly on the school calendar. Our Quick Sticks hockey team were overall winners of a Cirencester schools’ tournament. Our rugby players also shone in a Stroud schools’ competition. All of the children took part in the World 5000m challenge at the start of October and our Year 4 children took part in a water sports morning at the lakes in South Cerney.
Avening turns spooky this month with the annual Halloween school disco organised by FOAS for all our witches, wizards, cats, skeletons and even the odd spooky ghost! The rest of this term, as well as the usual topics and lessons, will be spent preparing for the Christmas productions, held in midDecember - see next month’s article for more details! For further information about our happy, busy place of learning, please see our school website www.avening.gloucs.sch.uk. Avening School

Tetbury Theatre Group The Group travelled to Oxford in September… …for their theatre visit and arrived early enough to go to a museum, or around a college or just have lunch. The play attended was Alan Ayckbourn’s “Relatively Speaking,” which had its world premiere in Scarborough in 1965. The London production in 1967 at the Duke of York’s Theatre was Ayckbourn’s first London West End hit. It also helped to launch Richard Briers’ career, and featured Michael Hordern and Celia Johnson. It has since been staged a few times by professional and amateur companies, and in 2013 a revival ran for three months at Wyndham’s Theatre in London, starring Felicity Kendal as Sheila. Thank you to Mrs Anne Glanville for writing the following review:
Tetbury Cricket Club Are looking for a Groundsman for the upcoming 2017 season. Duties include preparation of the cricket square and wickets. All equipment provided.
One of the best things about Alan Ayckbourn is that you can have watched one of his plays many years ago and yet still laugh at his timeless humour, now. This is exactly what happened when we sat in the comfortable seats of the newly refurbished Oxford Playhouse in mid-September, to watch his 1965 play “Relatively Speaking.”
If you would like more information please contact:tetburycricketclub@gmail.com or call Alex Evans on 07854 234703
As always Ayckbourn had chosen a clever title with hidden meaning for one of his most enduring plays. With Robert Powell and Liza Goddard as two of the four characters in the play, the slick and witty dialogue kept us hooked, as we followed the hilarious twists of the plot and misunderstandings between all the characters.

Tetbury Probus Walking the Zambesi Zimbabwean-born David Lemon, a local journalist and author, certainly took on a challenge in 2012 when at the age of 67 he started to walk the 3,000 km length of the mighty Zambesi river. He told us on the 15th of September how his adventure had involved undertaking the trek carrying a 75lb pack. But after the first 1,800 km, which had taken six months, he had lost 60lb’s in weight himself. A break in the UK allowed him to recover his strength before completing the 292-day walk in 2014. David illustrated the limited facilities and simple life in rural Africa as he made his way through Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The going was incredibly tough at times, but included sights such as the Victoria and Sioma Ngonye Falls as well as Lake Kariba, which to him was still home. It was a fascinating account of an unusually courageous journey, involving frustrations
with local officialdom, fighting mosquitos and malaria, and even dodging crocodiles when washing... But he made it! A less arduous journey was undertaken on the 28th of September when 17 members and wives enjoyed a tour of the BBC studios in Bristol. Our chairman has reported it began with a visit to the roof garden where

the daily weather forecast is given and then on to the Natural History Unit where Countryfile and Springwatch are made. The Radio Bristol studios were next, followed by the popular Points West programme with its array of TV cameras. The visit then became much more interactive. Half of the group performed a mini-episode of The Archers complete with farmyard sound effects while the others hosted a TV programme featuring News, Sport and the Weather Forecast. It was a most successful visit. A new Tetbury Probus era started on the 6th of October when we welcomed the Probus Two members, who are joining us. We shall enjoy their company at our future meetings. We also welcomed Dr Tony Walsh, one of The Thirteen, who walked us through Tetbury’s history from its earliest times as a stronghold in the Barton Abbotts area. He listed key people, explained the meanings of nearby settlement names, and described how Tetbury became a very prosperous market town. The lucrative market leases bought by Sir William Romney were left to the town in 1611. They were to be managed by the King’s Bailiff and twenty townsmen, thirteen of whom were name, and the profits used for specified charitable purposes. The leases expired in 1619, but were subsequently reacquired by the town. The Manor of Tetbury and other properties were bought by the town from Lord Berkeley and his mother in 1633. Feoffees were appointed to be the trustees of the Lord of the Manor Trust, a practice which continues to this day. Tony listed the properties now held by the seven Feoffees, described the charitable work of the Romney Trust undertaken by The Thirteen, and clarified the interactions between the two bodies. Explanations of the possible origins of the Tetbury dolphins and of the traditional beating of the bounds added to a very informative and interesting talk, for which Tony was sincerely thanked. Evesham. So, it seemed only right and proper to pay a visit… The décor in ‘Casa’ certainly seems a step up from previously, with subdued lighting and comfortable, stylish furnishings, but the menu is actually quite similar, with a preponderance of pizzas and pasta dishes available. That said, there are also a good number of dishes from the grill and a selection of risottos, too, so there’s plenty to choose from. Flossy started with a quite substantial antipasto platter, which she said was very nice, though maybe didn’t need so much rocket, and I had the gamberoni: four sizeable, juicy king prawns (shell on, so be prepared for a buttery chin!) in garlic, white wine and chilli butter with homemade garlic-brushed ciabatta, all of which was very tasty. Had I had a spoon, I’d have finished off the buttery ‘liquor’, too. To follow, Flossy’s al dente ‘Risotto Verdure’ (freshly grilled asparagus, broad beans, peas, zucchini, green beans, mint and parmesan) was deliciously fresh-flavoured and very more-ish. By way of a change for me, I chose ‘Saltimbocca Maiale’: pork fillet with crispy Parma ham, roasted new potatoes, green beans and a white wine and butter sauce which, for meat lovers, is well worth a try. The veg were well cooked and the sauce’s well flavoured, but the most impressive

thing was the veritable slab of pork which almost covered the plate - moist and tender and very nicely done. As it was our first visit to a new establishment, we felt it incumbent upon us to try some desserts – in the spirit of research, you understand! Flossy chose the waffle (not homemade, we think) topped with banana, chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream, which, she felt, was a bit heavy on the waffle – in both senses – and could’ve done with more banana, and I had the creamy lemon cheesecake. I’d have preferred more lemon and less cream, but that’s just me, I’m sure. Probably not a good choice if you’re weight-watching, but it was very smooth and had a lovely crunchy biscuit base. Accompanied by a nice bottle of reasonably priced Grillo white wine, which I’ll be looking out for in the shops, the bill was just over £70. Not the cheapest meal in town, perhaps, but we didn’t think that was bad for three courses each and a bottle of wine. The waiter said they’d gone for a ‘soft opening’, without much advertising, etc., hoping that word of mouth would bring in the customers. I’m sure we’ll be going back to try something else, so this mouth, for one, is suggesting you give it a whirl… Fill
Casa La Cucina Italiana. New Italian Restaurant has opened in Tetbury, Long Street; serving authentic real Italian food. Casa opened its doors for the first time last month, with many in Tetbury welcoming the new restaurant which owners describe as “the only one of its kind for miles around.” The restaurant is in Long Street in the site of the former “Ciao” restaurant which had been unoccupied for some time. It is already proving very popular, with a high number of bookings already taken. Mr Zoku of Casa says “The response from the local people has been fantastic and we have been made to feel most welcome in the town.” “We believe in producing the food in-house so it is as fresh as possible, and we also use local producers, so that way the quality of food is guaranteed. We make 98% of our menu right here on the premises and that includes the desserts. Our Tiramasu is to die for – you won’t find better anywhere else!” “Our ethos is to produce good quality food in portions of an excellent size – and the quality is there as well. We also have a specials menu which will change every three to four weeks, so we’ll always be worth a visit.” “The amount of interest has been far more than we ever could have expected and already we have taken a lot of bookings for the coming weeks.” “All the design and overseeing the building work was done by ourselves, as opening a restaurant is a very personal thing for us. We also have restaurants in Melksham and Evesham.”

Singing in the choir really reduces stress – and here’s the science – it’s because the hormone cortisol, produced when you are stressed, is reduced when you sing. And singing boosts cytokines, proteins released by the immune system that help fight off illness, according to a Royal College of Music study. As if that wasn’t enough, singing has been identified as one of the top ten mood boosters in University of Sussex research. No wonder some of us
just enjoy singing. Please contact us if you are interested, see details below.

Leighterton Primary School This month our children will tell you… …about the exciting opportunities they have recently taken. Our oldest Year Five and Six children have experienced a visit from Tom and a group of his animals that are usually found in the Rainforest. Eleanor reports on their visit: “Last week was an exciting week for Ridge Class as Tom, from Wild Kids Reptiles, came in to visit us due to our topic being ‘Journey to the Rainforest’. He came in with seven fascinating animals – an African Bullfrog, a Stick Insect, a Bearded Dragon, a scary Scorpion, a Rose Tarantula, a Ball Python and last, but certainly not least, a Sulcata Tortoise. It was a fabulous experience to learn about and feel the animals. Our most popular, by far, was the Sulcata Tortoise or African Spurred Tortoise, as it is also known. It was huge! It is the third largest tortoise after the Galapagos and the Aldabra and is the largest mainland tortoise. Adults can grow up to 83 centimetres long and weigh about 105 kilogrammes. This was a great experience for Ridge Class, one we will never forget.” During the summer holidays three of our Year Five children took part in a Chinese Immersion Course and Tabatha has written about it: “Last August I went to Oakham School in Leicestershire with two friends, Owen and Darren, to learn Chinese for a week. On the first night we had a quiz about China and my team won! We did three Chinese language lessons in the morning and two to four Chinese culture events each afternoon. There were 50 children from all over England. We stayed in dormitories of up to eight children. We went to eat in a canteen for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food was delicious and they had a wide range of dishes even if you were vegetarian or vegan. The teachers who taught language were very kind. Most of them were Chinese and made the learning fun. We were in classes of eleven and had names of animals. I was, along with the two other children from my school, in Monkey Class with a teacher called Mrs Tatum.
We loved handling the Ball Python. In the afternoons we did awesome activities to help us learn about China. We made Chinese t-shirts which we wore when we did a performance for our parents on the last day. We also did Chinese calligraphy and made pandas. In the mornings we did exercises where we learned a routine to music and performed it for our parents. Also we did ‘Lion Dancing’. We watched it and then had a chance to do it ourselves. One evening we
went swimming at the school pool as well. My two friends and I had lots of fun and we are now running a Chinese Club for the younger children at our school.” We would be delighted to show you around our school. Please contact Mrs Davey in the school office on (01666) 890273 or through our website – www.leighterton.com to arrange a convenient time. Meryl Hatfield Leighterton Primary School

I cannot believe that as I write this we are in October. This year has flown by - or is it that I am getting older?! It is cooler now and the nights are drawing in and we have darker mornings. What does this all mean? When I worked full time I used to hate leaving home in the dark and returning home in the dark, never seeing the house in daylight.
However, autumn can be a lovely time, the trees are changing colour, which can look lovely especially with the sun shining on the leaves. The other seasons also bring different thoughts; winter brings childhood memories of the cold and snow, with the milk bottles at school with ice on - and the fun in building snowmen! Spring with flowers creating beautiful displays in the garden, lambs being born - a time of new birth. Summer with warm sunshine and visits to the seaside which were always great fun as a child! We are reminded when

News from St Michael’s Church we think of the seasons of God’s creation, when he made everything for its time.
During the last week of September, we celebrated the Feast of St Michael the Archangel. We held our annual music evening, with a local choir, soloists, musicians, younger members of our Parish, student from Westonbirt, Fr Isidore Obi and Canon Tom Gunning from Stroud taking part. The evening was very much enjoyed by those taking part and those who attended. On the Sunday Fr Isidore celebrated Mass in the Chapel at Chavenage House and we enjoyed tours of the house before we sat down for lunch. We are now approaching November, a month dedicated to Holy Souls, when we remember all who have died from Stillbirth to those fortunate to reach over 100 years of age. We remember and give thanks for those who lost their lives in World Wars I and II and other conflicts when the country stands silent and wreaths are laid in remembrance. Puddle Ducks We have been having lots of fun at Puddle Ducks as usual. It seems unbelievable that we have already completed the first half-term of the year. We spent a week looking at ‘where we live’. We thought about our homes and families and made some fantastic junk model houses. We talked about the town that we live in and made a large map of Tetbury, adding our houses to it and some of the important places in Tetbury that we visit regularly. Of course a favourite place for us all is our lovely Library and we all really enjoyed a visit there to share a story and craft with Kylie. Thank you for making us all so welcome Kylie. We had a great time and loved being sharks all the way back to Puddle Ducks!
We then had fun with our pet week, making puppets and paintings and setting up our own veterinary surgery to tend to all the poorly toys with lots of role-play. We also enjoyed visits from a real pet when Pearl the Whippet came to play and Polly the (pretend but very realistic) Parrot caused much excitement! We learned how to take care of different pets and have been practising the Makaton signs for some animal names as our ‘signs of the week’.
school child please feel free to contact Catherine Chidley on 01666 504257 who will be pleased to arrange a visit for you during one of our morning sessions or do come along to Ducklings Toddler Group on a Friday from 1.30-2.45, usually in the main hall - please come to the side door. Sharon Sverdloff, Puddle Ducks
The weather had been generally kind which had enabled us to pull on our wellies each day and get outside for some wonderful autumn sunshine in our fully enclosed garden where the children are safe to explore and enjoy activities which stretch across all the areas of learning and build upon our weekly topics. We especially enjoyed going ‘on a bear hunt’ around the garden and we were surprised to find a bear hiding in our wigwam cave who chased us all the way ‘home’ again!

History of Tetbury Society
The ‘Great Severn Estuary Flood in 1607’ was the subject of the talk to HOTS on 6th October. We had first met our speaker, Rose Hewlett, two years ago when we visited Frampton on Severn, and it was then we learned of the impact of the flood in that village. Rose is now studying at Bristol University and her thesis will be about this flood, but she also has great interest is the history of old houses. Although 1607 is the generally accepted date of the flood the calendar has since changed so you may find it reported with a 1606 date. The weather seems to have been wet and stormy beforehand, so that when the sea broke through the defences as the tide came in the water may have quickly travelled over already saturated ground. The surge of the sea water was almost certainly the result of a ‘spring tide’ (a particularly high tide caused by the phase of the moon) coinciding with a gale force wind from the south west that forced water up into the funnel shaped Severn Estuary. Some have claimed there was a tsunami but Rose thinks this unlikely given the accounts of the weather conditions. A pamphlet published at the time was in no doubt that it was ‘God’s Warning to the People’. There were reports of flooding and damage by the high sea from Cardigan south-eastwards along the Welsh coast and from north Cornwall to Gloucester on the English side of the estuary. Lowlying parts of towns and villages were flooded, bridges damaged and ships lifted onto dry land. Limestone cliffs were damaged in South Wales and a new breakwater at the port of Aberthaw was swept away. But it was the widespread flooding of fields with the salt water resulting in deaths of cattle and sheep that caused the most concern. The Somerset Levels were flooded almost to the foot of Glastonbury Tor with reports of water deep enough to reach the tops of houses and trees. The illustrations published at the time may have exaggerated the depth, but several churches on the Gwent Levels and one in Somerset have floodmarks indicating that it was 4-5ft deep.
In Gloucestershire, the vicars of both Almondsbury and Arlingham made extensive reports of the death of cattle and sheep and devastation in their localities. At Bristol the morning tide was said to have been 9ft higher than in the evening. Bridges on the Cam and Little Avon were damaged. Only the higher ground to the south of Arlingham was above water and so the river virtually took a short cut across through Saul. At Frampton many properties were flooded but subsequent rebuilding makes it difficult to be sure of the extent of the damage. Gloucester was probably the limit of the damage but the weirs were constructed later so some effect may have been felt further north. Rose spoke for almost an hour without notes! She has prepared talks on other subjects so we may hear from her again in the future. HOTS next meets at 7.30pm on Thursday 3rd November in Christ Church when James White will speak about ‘Rex Warreford VC. Highworth’s Zeppelin Zapping Hero, 1915’. News from St Marys’ Church
Do please contact me or our Parish Office (01666 500 088) if you are interested in coming along. The Quiet Day is followed by
It will be a privilege to share Remembrance Sunday with everyone again this year. I remember vividly my first experience of Remembrance Sunday in Tetbury in 2013. Growing up in London, I had never seen anything like it: the way the community comes together to involve everyone, young and old. St Marys’ Church is packed, with all the children and young people so beautifully turned out in their uniforms, to present their colours. Then there is the march through town with the brass band. And it is all the more moving because we share the service as Churches Together in the Tetbury Area, with ministers and readers drawn from all our churches. Do join us for this very special service on Sunday 13th November at 2.30pm in St Marys, followed by the observance at the War Memorial. After that – before we know it – we are moving into Advent. We will be having a Quiet Day on Saturday 26th November in the Village Hall in Shipton Moyne. It will be a chance to take a step back and reflect on what it means for us for Jesus Christ to born into the world – Emmanuel, God with us.
our Advent Carol Service at 6pm on Sunday 27th November in St Marys’. Do also make a note of some special events coming up in December. On Saturday 3rd December we have our Church Christmas Market in the Market Hall, 10am-12.30pm. There is the children’s Christingle Service at 4pm on Sunday 4th December, with a wonderful Christmas concert given by Festivus (Heather Bristow, Sarana Verlin and their band) that same evening. We then have a treat in store, with a candlelit performance of Handel’s Messiah in Church on Sunday 11 December at 5pm. Please go to the Tetbury Music Festival website or call 01666 503552 for tickets and more details. More of course in the December edition. With love and prayers, Poppy (The Revd Poppy Hughes, Parish Priest)

Dolphins Hall !
The trustees of the Dolphin Hall have appointed…
! !
By Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales P & S Timbrell Decorators Painters and Decorators
…Clark & Maslin, Architect’s from Malmesbury, to re-design the existing Dolphin Hall. This is in place of the “New Build” plan, which had to be abandoned due to the severe lack of funding. By the end of the year both new front doors and front windows will be fitted and a new notice board is on order and will be with us quite soon, too. We welcome events to be advertised there, free of charge. The Tea Dances have become very popular, with those interested in dancing coming from all over the county. The next one is on November 5th – and next year there will be one every two months. A fully stocked bar is in operation and proving to be very successful. This is manned by volunteers.

Patient Participation Group Wrap up warm! With the cold weather upon us it is worth thinking about how temperature affects our bodies and our health. When we get cold our heart rate and blood pressure rise. Our hearts have to work much harder to keep our bodies warm. This can cause changes to our blood that can increase the risk of blood clots and lead to heart attacks or a stroke.

We have what is known as “excess coldweather deaths” in the UK. This puzzles people because in countries that have very cold winters, they don’t see this effect. When researchers looked into it, they realised that what was happening was people were going out in the cold without wrapping up well, then having a heart attack or stroke several days later. No one had linked the two! In countries with very cold winters, people dress up really warmly when they go out. But in the UK we only have mild cold winters. We feel we can get away with not wearing a hat, or maybe not putting mittens or gloves on, and many people don’t bother to do their coat up. This can lead to our body temperature dropping and the changes to the blood that go with that. So the message is, wrap up when you go out, even if the sun is shining and you don’t feel it is that cold.

Staying warm in the house is important too. Fuel is expensive, so it is understandable that people want to keep the temperature low. It is worth trying to keep at least one room warm, and also wearing layers of clothing. Moving around is a good idea too, so getting up at least once an hour, perhaps to have a hot drink or to reheat the hot water bottle, is a good idea. Police Constable 2221 Stay safe in Tetbury!
Put up a deterrent sign
At our latest NCG Police meeting it was raised by the floor that vulnerable residents are still being targeted by COLD CALLERS in the Tetbury area. Below is excellent advice from Age UK:
You could put a ‘no cold callers’ sign up on your door or window, which should deter any cold callers from knocking on your door. You can cut out this free sign from Action Fraud – below left – which is also available from Tetbury Police at the Council Offices.
Scammers commonly target older people for doorstep scams. In fact, 85% of victims of doorstep scams are aged 65 and over, according to National Trading Standards. Doorstep scams are when someone comes to your door with the aim of scamming you out of your money, or trying to gain access to your home to steal items from inside. While there are many legitimate tradespeople and officials, it’s wise to be on your guard when you answer your door. Doorstep scammers can be pushy and persuasive and it can be easy to fall victim. It’s especially important to be vigilant and aware if you live on your own.
Nominate a neighbour Find out if you have a nominated neighbour scheme where a neighbour can help to make sure if callers are safe. Contact your local Neighbourhood Watch or your local Safer Neighbourhood police team to find out more.
Check their credentials
Protect yourself
You should always check a seller or trader’s credentials before agreeing to purchase their products or services. See the guide “Avoiding scams” on the Age UK web site for tips on how to do that.
Whenever you answer the door remember to lock, stop, chain, check.
Call the police
Lock: Secure all your other outer doors as the person at the door may intend to distract you while an accomplice gets in through a back door.
Stop: Think about whether you’re expecting anyone. Chain: Put the door chain on or look through the window or spyhole to see who’s there. Check: Ask for an identity card and examine it carefully - you can always tell the caller to come back another time when someone will be with you.
Finally, remember that you can dial 999 if you’re suspicious or if the caller won’t leave. Call the police non-emergency number 101 if you’re not in immediate danger but want to report an incident. If you’ve been the victim of scam, there’s no shame or embarrassment in falling victim to a scam – it happens to lots of people. If you report it, it may help to prevent others from experiencing the same thing. You can report it to Action Fraud – they may be able to track down the fraudster. You can also contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service for advice. I hope this is beneficial, many thanks. Stay safe! Leah, PC Davis 2221

Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun Recent developments in time 2016 has been very challenging for us. I had the pleasure of spending New Year’s Eve enjoying the hospitality of the Great Western Hospital in Swindon and subsequently seeing more of my family than usual before returning to the office ten weeks later.

When I had just qualified as a solicitor, conveyancing property transactions were charged per the scale fee, which meant that a solicitor in central London was charging on the same scale as his country counterpart. The whole exercise remained competitive in its way, because a solicitor had to do a good job to attract clients rather than a cheap job. In the 1980’s, time recording was adopted universally in a big way, which had the effect of relegating the status of the person doing the job to the lowest cost, in many cases. Insurance premiums rose as a result of an increase in the number of negligence cases and I believe relationships with clients deteriorated too, because those in charge were encouraging their employees to chalk up chargeable hours against the client. I recall a judge, who I respected, stating that thinking about a client on a car journey would be permissible when one’s bill was scrutinised by the court. One must avoid being hypocritical here because in probate and commercial matters I do see

Happily, having faced this onslaught, there have been positive developments too, like our professional indemnity premium being reduced by 50% in two years. We have also been joined by Nigel Collie, who is an experienced commercial property lawyer. This has enabled me to concentrate of providing a better probate, wills and matrimonial service. I have had time to notice other things going on too, including an article in the national press stating that some of the golden circle London firms had been putting pressure on their staff to produce more chargeable hours, including a charge on clients for thinking about them on a lavatory break!
I like to think that if I think I am working slowly I discount time - and although I do think about cases when driving along, I do not inflict those thoughts on my time sheets.

With modern communications one imagines one is in touch but nothing substitutes the physical presence in the office. While enjoying the process of recuperation, one is oblivious to its negative effect on staff and clients. The result was immense strain on others and its domino effect on the practice, being subjected to locums and other problems. St Mary’s C of E VA Primary School Developing Young Leaders at St. Mary’s CE VA Primary School At the start of every new school year we assign very important roles to the children which enables them to develop as young leaders. Some Year 6 children write a letter to Mr Meadows, our Assistant Headteacher, explaining why they would make a good prefect and after very serious and thorough consideration by the Year 6 teachers we were delighted to present prefect badges to 11 of our oldest pupils. These children will help the staff and younger children around the school and take on special responsibilities as ambassadors for our school as well as assisting with the day to day management. The children have also voted for their House Captains and Vice House Captains who were presented with their badges in assembly. These young leaders have the
job of leading their houses and organising house events as well as awarding certificates to children who have earned lots of house points over the week. Children at St. Mary’s are also given the opportunity to stand as school councillors. Miss Jackson, our Deputy Headteacher, ensures there is a fair and democratic election process. Children nominate
themselves for school council and have to give a short presentation to their class on why they think they would make a good school councillor. Classes then vote for their representative on their ballot papers which are put into the ballot boxes (borrowed from Tetbury Town Council). We then count all the votes and announce the winners in assembly. Katie Wright is this year’s Chair.

The School Council representatives meet regularly with Miss Jackson to discuss ways they can improve outcomes for pupils. This has included ordering new PE equipment and inviting inspirational adults into school such as Emily Diamond, Olympic Athlete who achieved a bronze medal in Rio 2016. Other Young Leaders in our school include our Peer Mediators who do a fantastic job at playtimes supporting younger children in their play. Peer Mediators are trained in resolving minor disputes and quarrels that occur on the play grounds but they also play with the younger children which our little ones love! We hope that by providing these opportunities, the children at St. Mary’s leave our school with the ability to take on responsibility and work effectively as a team to make decisions for the benefit of others. The meeting on Wednesday the 12th of October… …was devoted to a demonstration of landscape painting in water colour given by Steve Hall. Steve had taught building and architecture and took up painting ‘later in life’; he took it up with gusto and frequently now leads painting workshops and gives demonstrations. It was both an interesting and an amusing evening as Steve has a sense of humour and put his audience at ease.
Working from a photograph of a sunlit country lane, Steve lightly suggested with a pencil where the major shapes were to go – the road and tree masses. Then he loosely applied a weak first coat of paint allowing the colours to bleed into one another and suggesting the main areas in the work. He then started to build up the image using thicker mixes of paint and creating strong contrasts by having darker areas next to lighter areas. He was still adding in extra components such as a few more individual trees. This was followed by putting in branches with a finer-pointed brush. By now he was
Tetbury Arts Society no longer copying the photograph but developing the design to make a wellbalanced and interesting image. The last stage was to add strong shadows across the road and strengthen a few areas to give the completed work. This all only took him one hour! After tea brewed by Christina and Doreen, and a minor delay caused by the electricity supply tripping and plunging us briefly into darkness, Steve went on to tackle boats on a beach. Our next meeting is on Wednesday the 2nd of November, when Liz Lippiatt will be leading us in an evening textile screen-printing workshop. Barry Barnes is arranging a coach trip to Oxford on Saturday the 12th of November. From Friday the 25th until Sunday the 27th of November we have a sale of members work in the Market Hall in Tetbury. Finally, the Christmas Social on the 7th of December will mark the end of our activities in 2016. Information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry on 01666-503926. You will find that we are a friendly group welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached. Michael Kingham, Tetbury Arts Society

This service is very much needed – but you will need to “use it or lose it” with Save ‘n’ Borrow! Not enough people are using the facility to make it worthwhile opening every Thursday from 2.00 pm until 4.00 pm. It’s not too late to save for Christmas or next year’s holiday or for something quite different. And if you want a loan, don’t be shy, come to see us and take advantage of our very low interest rates. It would be a shame to decide to make use of this community venture only to find that it is no longer there. So make haste! Alison Hesketh
Several groups have already committed to take part or have expressed interest, but more are required – and of course if any residents have spare decoration materials to share, we’d be most grateful if they’d drop them in at the council offices to help us make things in the church look extra cheery.
For an “entry form” or more information about this incentive please contact me via the email below, or give the town council a ring on 01666 504670. Many thanks, Rachel Moody moodyhouse@hotmail.co.uk TACT – Tetbury Area Churches Together Dear Editor, I was really honoured to be nominated last month as an “Unsung Hero” in the Tetbury
Ed: It was very nice to receive this note from Lesley, a very worthy recipient – and I’m also happy to confirm that she does indeed have seven children, not five as reported last month. I’ve made a note to keep up with her progress in the future. If there’s someone you know who repeatedly contributes selflessly to the community, then please do let me know; my details are on page three of the magazine.

Every day we are told in the media that health care professionals - doctors, nurses and administrators – are hard to come by. In Tetbury we seem to have difficulty in hanging on to them! One could understand if they had reached retirement age or if they had been made an offer they could not refuse, but in this case, as with other leavers over the last few years, this has not been the case. So why can’t Romney House keep its staff? Is it us, the patients? Is it the town in general? Or is it the practice itself which fails to provide a happy working environment so that its staff feel that they just have to get out for their own self-preservation?
Lesley Jablonski
We’re very grateful to have the support of Charlton Park, who are helping us along.
Dear Editor I was very saddened this week to hear that Dr Catharina Nehrig is leaving the Romney House Surgery. I know I will not be alone when I say she will be very much missed. She is a quiet, conscientious and skilled doctor who has provided excellent care to her patients 5 days a week until 9 in the evening and then regularly visited her palliative care patients at weekends at a time when GPs do not, on the whole, undertake out of hours visits. She will be sorely missed.
I am looking forward to the meal at the Priory very much.

Thank you from the Food Bank volunteers to all those who regularly or occasionally give food for those in need of it – and to the Churches who have given the gifts from their Harvest Festivals. All your gifts are really appreciated by our clients. It is good to know you care. As I write, this week we fed 31 people in one session of an hour and a half.

Dear Editor,
Local organisations are being invited to supply and decorate Christmas trees to adorn the inside of St Saviours, (like the “Memory Tree” incentive of last year) with which to help celebrate this special time of year.

Tetbury in Bloom
backdrop to the showier summer and spring displays. Plants such as berberis, choisya, spiraea, phormium and euonymus.
Planning ahead Once the dormant season is well and truly upon us, it is time to plan ahead. Whilst the bedding plants, with their summer colour, have long gone and the perennials have largely died down, many may think of November as a dreary month, but not Jane Bell, one of the Tetbury in Bloom helpers. For her and the team it is a busy month; a time to reflect on the great summer planting and to plan ahead for the spring. We are busy bedding down for the winter, tidying up the flowerbeds. There is also still the opportunity to move poorly placed plants and divide overcrowded perennials while the soil is still warm. It is a time to take stock and appreciate the shapes, colours and textures of the structural plants that form the
Each year we add to the spring flowering bulbs and this year is no exception – we will be planting a further 5,000 bulbs around the town. Every autumn after planting, we wait with anticipation to see how they all come up and then we consider how to improve the displays further. Sue Hirst has pored over the catalogues, and packaged up the bulbs by height, colour, variety and type for different flowerbeds tulips, daffodils and crocuses in profusion together with alliums and grape hyacinths. Earlier this year we planted ‘snowdrops in the green’ and English bluebells along the verge outside the hospital and added more snowdrops under the trees in London Road and the Twizzle bed, (the bed that lies alongside the footpath leading to and from the library and Long Street.)
As Jane points out, it must be a funny sight for passers-by to see the team in their highvisibility jackets, with their heads down and bottoms in the air, digging holes. (Kevin, my husband, calls it “the Tetbury in Bloom salute”!) At the end of planting, Jane usually has a blister on the palm of her hand but a huge feeling of satisfaction and anticipation as she looks forward to the display to come in a few months’ time. Last month’s Race Night was another success. Thank you to everyone who attended and particularly to the sponsors: Highgrove Enterprises, Artique, R&J Pearce Ltd, Scentiments, Skeins of Tetbury, Yellow Lighted Book Shop, Filly’s and Martin White Jeweller. Thank you to Jane and all members of the team – it may be hard work but it is also lots of fun. We hope that the spring displays bring as much pleasure to you as they do us. If you go down to the Goods Shed today you’re sure of a big surprise, if you go down to the Shed today you’d better go in disguise! (Boiler suits are a good option - preferably accessorised with some shiny secateurs.) There were a lot of “bears” gathered there today as the Council, the Tetbury in Bloom Society and the Rail Land volunteers cleared up the parkland around the site and did a bit of pruning before winter sets in. Margaret and Rob Gibbs are ordering 200 wild daffodils from a specialist grower in
Tetbury Rail Lands Trust
Somerset to herald in 2017 and cheer up the approach with a host of golden daffodils. If you peep into the shed from the side door you will be amazed by the transformation to our “Sleeping Beauty’s castle”. The cobwebs are all gone and a smart new floor has been laid complete with underfloor heating, the walls are all insulated and freshly plastered and painted white, the beams in the roof space look beautiful now they have been sandblasted and oiled and before the scaffolding was taken down Graham Cleaver worked with me to install all the wiring for a superb speaker system. We enjoyed our day and were congratulated by Aiden on the tidiness of the job! Estimates are coming in for the double
glazing of the windows and we are optimistic that this will shortly be resolved at a competitive price. This will help with the soundproofing and will prevent heat loss and condensation. The kitchen and toilet extension is now fully built complete with all its doorways and serving hatches and the wiring and infrastructure is in place ready for the final fitting out of our high spec commercial kitchen, that will have an impressive six burner Falcon Dominator range cooker at its heart. We have sourced a top quality stainless steel commercial kitchen from Nisbets for around half the price of our previous estimates and believe we can get it up and running early next year for under £20,000 as we are doing most of the fitting ourselves. The “sponsor a seat” campaign is coming along well. We have sold 112 and we now have only about 65 seats to go before we can say the money is in the bank and we can place our order. We have been touched by the solidarity and generosity of our friends in standing with us and saying “Yes, I will help you to achieve this part of your dream.” Thank you and apologies to anyone who inadvertently received a second form after they had already donated. It is only the hopefully forgivable - result of having too much enthusiasm! Every single sale has been celebrated and appreciated by our members. Jill Dodge is still selling dahlias at every opportunity and her combined sales have made over £400 and it has all gone in the bank, along with the takings from the last Car Boot Sale which took place last Sunday in the station yard.

The completion of Phase One which will deliver an updated main Goods Shed with a ready to fit kitchen will be upon us by Christmas and the chocolate Father Christmases are already in the shops so in the famous lines of a James Bond movie it will soon be time for “all crew to stand by on the gantry”. If you would like to help us now, it is an exciting time to come forward. You can ring me on Tetbury 01666 502877 or go to our website www.tetburyraillands.com. Priory Inn Blog According to the founder of British Summertime, William Willett, many hours of daylight were wasted on people staying in bed long after the sun rose, during the warmer months. Thanks to this “icon of daylight”, the clocks have now “fallen back” and lighter mornings are with us until the Spring, when British Summertime will again be marked with another hour change. More productive mornings, which are crucial for our early-rising farming community are also accompanied by the drawing-in of nights and associated slow-cooked, warming, comfort food.

In exchange, we hand out vouchers to the current market value of the produce, which can be used against food and drink at The Priory Inn. The growing year of 2016 was a bumper one for the hardy gardeners and our twenty regular contributors have received over £1,300 in vouchers, the “winner” receiving over £190 and enjoying family meals throughout the summer.

St Mary’s Nursery Playgroup Where has the time gone?! We are excited to be back for a new year and have been very pleased to welcome some wonderful new children as well as our now new preschoolers! We have been really pleased with the intake already so please do get in touch if you would like to register your interest or find out more information. Last month we said a sad goodbye to Louise Smith who has been our Chair for the last two years and has been a huge part in seeing the playgroup flourish over the last year – we really wouldn’t have done it without her! However, we can now welcome the new Chair of the playgroup committee, Darby Law - we are very pleased to have her on board and excited for the future. A big thanks to an active together grant from the council which will help us see changes being made to our outside space, which we are all looking forward to. We have now had new AstroTurf laid outside (a big thank you to Tim Shute for inspiring us and laying this!) and will soon have a new mud kitchen, water walls and potting
troughs, all of which the children (and staff ) will love. Fast approaching us is the festive season and so an explosion of glitter and tinsel can be expected, as well as lots of exciting Christmas crafts and activities. So far this term we have been “under the sea” as we focused on kindness and sharing, been shopping in our ‘St Mary’s supermarket’
Decorating and building supplies
and sailed on a boat (a giant box) which eventually turned into a recycling lorry! This has led to a full-blown recycling centre being created and a great opportunity for us to talk about looking after our world, as well as the creatures in it. Next week we will be ‘rescuing’ animals in the garden. We have also just had a pyjama day to raise money for Crackerjacks Children’s trust, which supports children with severe disabilities and their families. Thank you to all our families for getting on board and helping us to raise nearly £50!
We have been nominated at Co-op! Opening hours Monday to Thursday 7.00am – 5pm Friday 7.00am – 4pm Saturday 8am – 4pm Follow us

Participating in the BBC’s #LovetoRead campaign, Tetbury Library invites you to share your reading joys and passions by recommending a great book. During November, you can come to terms with the end of your enthralling read by writing a few words about it on a #LovetoRead heart. This will then go on display in the library to guide and inspire other readers in their book choice. On the morning of Saturday 5th November you can join the UK’s #LovetoRead Selfie Weekend by popping into the library and take a selfie (or staff can photograph you) with your favourite book and emoji (to show how it made you feel). Then share your picture at #libraries #LovetoRead.
New Build Before
You can also take part in the country-wide #LovetoRead online poll to find the nation’s best-loved book - go to www.goscl.com/ lovetoread/ before the end of the month. (If you would like some help getting online, don’t forget that there is a free Computer Buddy available by appointment in the library.) Many thanks to everyone who kindly donated wool etc., for the Yarn Bombing group at the library. For anyone interested in helping with the knitting/crocheting, in order to ‘yarn bomb’ (decorate) the library for an upcoming event – please let a member of staff know.
Landscaping After
For those already feeling the seasonal spirit, there is a lovely selection of charity Christmas cards for sale in the library. Also, look out for festive family craft events.

Avening WI It’s all aboard the coach to Windsor… …where we will see the exhibition “90 years of style from the Queen’s wardrobe”. We had no problem in filling the coach as this exhibition has had excellent reviews from Buckingham Palace where it has been on display this summer.
Our October speakers were Kate and Neil from Stroud Waitrose talking about the fresh produce and how Waitrose tries to use as much meat, fruit, vegetables and flowers from British suppliers as possible. The fish is all from sustainable sources and Waitrose even has some of its own fishing boats. Neil also showed us how to fillet a sea bream and of course made it look easy!

Plans are afoot to take members to Bath later on in November to visit the Christmas Market, which is one of the largest in the country. Our Christmas lunch is booked again at the Snooty Fox, where we have always been well looked after and had very good food.
We had a beautiful day for our walk at Haresfield Beacon but the view had disappeared due to heat haze! We sat outside at the Railway Inn for lunch afterwards. The three dogs had a good time too! Our friends from the Prestbury Group duly arrived at Cherington Village Hall, we all enjoyed meeting up again on a lovely afternoon and as usual our ‘Bite to Eat’ team had prepared a lovely afternoon tea for them. Several members attended the Gloucestershire Federation Autumn Council meeting at Pittville Pump Rooms. The members at the meeting were entertained by a singing duo Cantare who were enthusiastically received. The Autumn quiz will take place at the Avening Social Club on 4th November and the proceeds will be donated to the Air Ambulance Service.

Avonvale Football Club The club has got off to a good start this season… …with the U13’s currently placed 3rd in the North Wiltshire 3rd division having beaten Wroughton 5-2 away in their first game of the season. With a few injuries to the side, up stepped new signing Johnny Edwards to bag himself a brace. Unfortunately, the cup didn’t start of quite as well as the team lost to Division 1 leaders Swindon Supermarine in the second round. The boys put up a good fight in what turned out to be a close match but couldn’t quite see it through. The U14s got off to a great start as well, currently coming second to neighbours Tetbury Town in the North Wiltshire

The U18s are currently joint top of the North Wiltshire 3rd Division with the maximum 15 points. They were 2-7 victors over Highworth Town, George Dandridge scoring five. Not to mention the two 4-0 victories prior to that with Theo Martin scoring incredible hat-tricks in both. They have been drawn against Malmesbury, setting up a second round derby in the cup. The men’s team, who play in the Stroud and District League, have struggled to get off the mark in division four, winning only one of their opening four games. However, things are looking up as they won their last match against Abbeymead Rovers 2-1.

Computer Advice
Do you have a BT or Yahoo email account? You may have heard about the hacked Yahoo accounts last month. If you have either a btinternet.com address or Yahoo, you need to take action now, if you have not changed your password of late. News of the huge data breach at Yahoo came to light only recently, although many have surmised as much given the amount of accounts that have been compromised with spurious emails being sent out from the entries in the online address book. This has included stranded holiday appeals for cash or emails with odd emails links to iffy websites, etcetera.
also setting up your mobile number as a means of unlocking or getting security updates on your account [if available].
Anyway, now that the problem is in the open, you do need to change your password, if you have not done so within the last few months. BT, who still uses Yahoo to host some of its mail, has been sending out a message encouraging customers to do just this. However, do be careful, as there are many scam messages circulating with a similar headline, so never click any links or open attachments if you are not absolutely positive where the email has originated from. It really is not worth the risk. To be safe, go straight to the BT or Yahoo website and change it from there. If you have any concerns or you would like some help, do please get in touch.
Given this data breach at Yahoo, the bad guys are also taking the opportunity to call users and try to glean as much personal and financial information out of you as possible, so please do not respond to anyone cold calling you. If you are at all concerned, do contact BT on 150 if you have a BT phone line. Yahoo will not contact you directly, so reject any such calls.
If you have used your BT or Yahoo email address and the same password to access other websites, you also need to take action now. You really cannot afford to let someone hack your accounts. This could lead to identity theft and loss of your hard earned cash. With data breaches at TalkTalk, Sage, Nationwide, HM Revenue and Customs [to mention but a few], you really cannot afford to be complacent.
If you would like your computer cleaned, booked in for an annual service or to discuss any of the points above, do get in touch. For more information about Windows, including my previous articles from the Advertiser, go to my blogs on the website below.
Many BT users still seem to be using the default password given to them years ago, such as Broadband123, London123 or similar. If this is you, change it immediately! Whilst you are in your account settings, it would be worth checking your security information and

Tetbury Police Museum We do try to ring the changes here at the museum, but with limited resources it isn’t easy. That’s where donations from visitors and groups happy with the curator’s presentations come in – they enable us to improve the displays which otherwise might not be possible. So, coming soon will be Sergeant Smith brought to life (you’ll have to pop in to find out for yourself what he’ll be doing!) and a large panel sited behind the side gate on Long Street to screen the rather scruffy yard from view (you’ll be impressed by what it’ll entail!).
The first charge was reduced to one of common assault, to which the accused pleaded guilty. For the defence it was pointed out that the accused was the principal sufferer in the affair. A sentence of six months’ imprisonment for the assault and two months’ imprisonment for the attempted suicide was passed, the sentences to run concurrently. Source: The Western Daily Press, 21st November 1901 Further research shows that ten years later the couple were still together living near Witney. George was now a farm labourer; and their family had increased by another two children. Research: Sally Brown, a Museum volunteer.

At our meeting in October we were happy to welcome three new members. I think they will have enjoyed our speakers, Gloucester Film Makers, who showed clips of old films from all over Gloucestershire. In particular, the film of King George and Queen Elizabeth visiting Cirencester in 1947 to plant a tree at the Royal Agricultural College was very well received. Some films were quite amusing especially the Sausage eating competition and the cheese rolling on Cooper’s Hill. We also saw footage of the Woolsack races here in Tetbury.

Over the last few months our Needlework group has been very busy. The organisers of Westonbirt Charities Fair asked us to create 25 knitted reindeer in all shapes and sizes. They are to be placed around the fair at the end of October for people to hunt. We had great fun making them and even more fun giving them all a name! We have enjoyed supper at the Ormond and are looking forward to our annual Christmas meal in November. Our next meeting is on November the 14th at the Dolphins Hall at 7.30pm.

Chelworth Bookworms “Life After Life” by Kate Atkinson Ursula is born on a snowy night in 1910 – but that fact is the only fixed point in this story. From the moment of her birth, her life starts and stops with events repeated but never quite the same. Almost as if she is given the chance to ‘get it right this time’ she eventually manages to reach adulthood where her precarious existence is further complicated by the London Blitz. 2050315

Once you have accepted the curious premise of this book, and the fact of our heroine’s regular demise, this is an engaging story that highlights the unpredictability and fragility of our existence and the effect that seemingly minor decisions can make on the rest of our lives. Whilst Ursula’s story is constantly changing, that of her family seems to follow a set course. Gradually we get to know more about her parents, Sylvie and Hugh, and also the wayward aunt, Izzy. However, it is Ursula’s experiences during the war that form the heart of the book, at times graphically describing the horrors of war and its effects on the civilian population. There are random excursions into history, one of Ursula’s lives being played out in Germany where she becomes a friend of Eva Braun, however most of the book is very firmly set in England.

A story of perseverance with a sense of purpose that is ultimately uplifting, I would definitely recommend this book – though it is perhaps not for the faint-hearted. Ghilly Vincenti, Chelworth Bookworms

where many folk tales of slaying giants are to be found. In British folklore there are tales of Jack the Giant Killer, a Cornishman who is said to have rid Wales of all giants. The first play on the subject, according to some sources, was produced by David Garrick in 1773 at Drury Lane, taking its theme from an early eighteenth century folktale. The hero, Jack, a poor boy who lived with his mother and their cow, is a typical folklore hero, lazy, unscrupulous but with a heart of gold. In the Pantomime Jack is sent by his mother, usually called Dame Trott, or Dame Durden to sell their favorite, and only cow ‘Daisy’ or ‘Milky White’ as they were so poor.
You are invited, as a special guest of Tetbury Lions Club to attend the production of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ on Wednesday 23rd November. In the usual version of the tale, the giant is unnamed, but many plays based on the story name him as Blunderbore; a giant of that name also appears in Jack the GiantKiller. The giant’s traditional cry of “fee, fi, foe, fum” dates back at least as far as 1605. The first Pantomime version of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ was in 1819, which also marked the appearance of the first ever female ‘Principal Boy’, Eliza Povey, in the role of Jack. The earliest printed edition, which has survived, is the 1807 book “The History of Jack and the Bean-Stalk.” The story does not then appear in print in any form for another seventy years. Many variations of the tale’s themes exist in different countries but it is the English version that is the most popular and best-known variation. The events causing the beanstalk to grow, as well as the motivation for stealing from and killing the giant, does however differ across versions. So the Dolphins Drama group Autumn production is an old favourite that will allow for a great deal of audience participation. The show will run from

We are pleased to report that the Annual Beating of the Bounds was well attended, with over twenty people completing the walk, followed by the presentation of our Accounts, whilst enjoying a welcome cup of coffee and apples from the Community Orchard. In addition, this year we had a display from the pupils at St Mary’s School in the Market House, about the Market House. Thank you to everyone who was involved. Our Thirteen Member Dr Tony Walsh has recently made a presentation to The Probus Club – “A walk through Tetbury and the origin of the Tetbury Dolphins” – this was well received and we are pleased to say that The Probus Club made a donation to The Goods Shed following this event.

Tetbury Community Fire Station We need you! Have you got what it takes? Hello! My name is David Smith and I am Watch Manager of Tetbury Community Fire Station, part of Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service. Over the last three years sadly we’ve lost seven firefighters from Tetbury fire station - some through reaching retirement age, some for personal reasons. We’ve managed to replace four firefighters but we’re keen to find people to fill the other three places.
or how many times a week for certain!) Full training is given and so is all the support and encouragement you could need to become fully competent and qualified. So if you are looking for a new challenge, want to make a difference and you’re willing to make a commitment, please call in on a Monday night and see me or one of my Crew Managers and we will answer your questions. More information available on the internet- www.glosfire.gov.uk At the moment there are ten of us at Tetbury fire Station; we are a close group and all enjoy looking after the community of Tetbury and the surrounding villages. We respond to all types of calls, road traffic collisions, chemical spills, animal rescues, medical emergencies (co-responding with the ambulance service) and even fires! We respond 24/7 365 days a year and can be called upon to support the rest of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire on larger incidents. Since 2013, when I took charge of Tetbury Fire Station, we have been presenting the Firefighter of the year award. FF Mike Houghton won it the first year, CM Sacha
Ward 2014 and FF Stephen Chidley last year. The trophy used to be a large chrome bell on a plaque, taken home by the winner for the year. However, this soon turned into a station joke as the winner had to try and find somewhere for it and also to keep it polished. Or more likely, their wife had to keep it polished! Last year however, we were highly honoured to receive a donation of money at the request of the late Mrs. Maureen Webber, from the proceeds of the collection at her funeral. We wanted to use this money to remember Mrs. Webber and to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication given by the Firefighters of Tetbury Station. We commissioned a new award in her name - The Maureen Webber Firefighter of the year award. A chromed firefighter’s axe mounted on an oak board, the winners name is engraved on a small plaque and mounted on a matching board. This is kept on station for all to see, and it will form part of Tetbury Fire Station history for years to come. Dave Smith, Tetbury Community Fire Station

I have used Howard Palmer to buy, sell and let properties for over 20 years. He is a true professional, experienced, a good communicator and cares for his clients. I have no hesitation in recommending him to those in the residential marketplace. Director, Edward Blake Ltd CHP Lettings, organised our tenancy with great professionalism and courtesy. Perhaps the best recommendation we could give is that we are now considering buying a property to let and would have no hestitation in asking CHP Lettings to manage it. Tenants CHP Lettings provided us with an admirably speedy service, with courtesy and consideration. We would not hesitate to recommend their agency. Tenants CHP Lettings offered a genuinely first class personal service with a sound knowledge of the property. His services were strides ahead of the competitors. He had an excellent rapport with the landlord and it was negotiated with kindness and discretion. Nothing was too much trouble and we are exceedingly grateful. He went beyond our expectation of a letting agent. Tenants
