was moved along at a breath-taking pace by race commentator Philip Taubenheim of Wotton Auction Rooms, and Philip, who is a veteran of many related frog-racing events, enjoyed the evening so much he also announced that he would love to come back and do it all again next year. Many thanks to those who came - we hope you can join us in 2019. One highlight of what proved to be a fiercely competitive evening this year, was Past President Alan Cross receiving £100 in prize money, on behalf of his syndicate of Rotary Club friends. We have a total for the race night of £708, which will give us a surplus of over £500 after prizes and expenses have been paid.

We had a short sharp shock at the beginning of March with the “Beast from the East” bringing us snow – and then another episode mid-month; we should now have some milder weather to come, let’s hope.

Avening WI After an inspiring talk about Longfield Hospice… …we have decided to donate the proceeds from our Spring village quiz, to be held on the 27th of April, to their cause. Jan Ryder was the speaker. She gave a very good presentation on the work to enable adults to live well with life limiting illness. All services are provided free of charge, with more than 80% of the charity’s income raised from the general public through their shops and fundraising activities. Our sewing morning, making bunting in green and white fabrics, was a great success - and we produced over 150 individual flags. Liz Knowles made a further string with Avening WI on it, to complete the job. In view of the snow and continued bad weather, it was much better than a walk!

Our March speaker was Celia Hargrave, describing her Cotswold garden, in Sheepscombe. The development of the garden has been a labour of love over many years and the results are so stunning that the garden has been featured in many magazines and is regularly open to the public through the National Garden Scheme. After much discussion fuelled by lots of coffee and cake at the committee meeting, we have decided our summer outing this year will be a visit to Savill Gardens in Windsor Great Park. Our WI members approved the choice. It will take place on 27th June when we hope everything will be in full bloom!

Eating Out Something seemed to call from afar this week, so, when the opportunity presented itself, Flossy and I ventured further afield: out into the wilds of Leighterton, to The Royal Oak. It’d been ages since our last visit and it’s fair to say their food had been variable on recent occasions. Dishes like venison with bone marrow croquettes, or cubes of port jelly with cheese had disappeared completely, to be replaced with pretty bog-standard pub fayre. So, imagine our pleasant surprise to find a return to starters like smoked haddock soufflé, game terrine, sushi roll or crepes, and mains which offered a near-bewildering selection of deliciousness, from Balinese pork curry, through pheasant ballotine, to Persian vegetable and lime casserole – and more! The starters arrived just as we wondered if they were taking too long – but the reason for the time involved was obvious: everything had clearly been made from scratch. Flossy’s soufflé had lovely texture, though it could’ve had more smoked haddock flavour, and was complimented by the sea salad and sea water pearls (no, I’d never heard of them, either; basically, very small, sea-salty jelly beads – nice!) My leek, cheddar and walnut crepe with tomato, kale and lentil concasse was much lighter than it looked. Where I’d been anticipating the kind of pancake I might turn out on Shrove Tuesday, this was fluffy and delicate, with a balance of cheesiness, leek and crunch from the walnuts. Mains were a chicken, leek and cider suet crust pie with chicken gravy and mash, and a cod loin steak with potato and tarragon croquette, shallot veloute, garlic kale and crispy cod skin. Once again, the individual pie had obviously been raised by hand – the pastry was spectacular! Flossy felt it could’ve benefitted from more gravy in the pie, but nonetheless it was very moreish. And the mash was wonderful: smooth, thick and buttery! My cod (nearly the size of two ramekins atop one another) was beautifully cooked, the croquettes were crisp and tasty, and the veloute deeply flavoured - with the garlicky

butter from the kale it was almost irresistible. Even the crispy cod skin (which I know is not everyone’s cup of tea) was prepared like a tuille and added an enjoyable extra texture. With all mains except the steaks coming in at £15.95 or less, we thought their pricing was pretty keen – and for such nice food, it felt like a bargain. Maybe the chef’s not being paid enough!

Our current officers all offered themselves for re-election, duly approved, and Charles Grene was welcomed as a new member of the committee. Our chairman, Malcolm Lomax, was given a special vote of thanks for all he had done to ensure we had enjoyed another successful year. Our archivist, Dennis Brunsdon, started our forty-third year by reminding us briefly of the club’s history since its inception on the 3rd of February 1976. He highlighted an interesting selection of distinguished speakers, key events, meeting places and places visited, displaying historic photographs. He revealed that the club has had 176 members so far, the majority of the current members adjourning to the Priory Inn for a buffet lunch after the meeting. Unfortunately, our meeting scheduled for the 1st of March had to be cancelled due to bad weather, but we’ll be travelling to sub-zero China, experiencing life in WW2-occupied European countries and unravelling the mystery of Agatha Christie over the next few weeks. My response to the instruction “take that dog out” was that every dog was entitled to an identification parade, just like humans. Happily, Lady Devlin accepted that there was doubt about the identity of the dog. In civil cases, the standard of proof tends to be a balance of probabilities, whereas in criminal cases it is of course “beyond all reasonable doubt.” Civil judges can get away with saying that they prefer the evidence of X as opposed to Y, which gives ample discretion. I once employed a man who we shall call Sydney, who used to point out to me in a very tactless way that my father was “a much better advocate” than I was, and I “just did not have the skills.” He was right, but as he had an obnoxious way of putting his point across, one was reluctant to heed his advice. I was employed by the Lord Chancellor as a part time Civil Judge for 10 years and came across advocates who were not only impressive, but who also had a gentle way of putting across their case. Some of them went on to become very distinguished judges. Sydney had a substantial criminal practice. Many of his clients were convicted, however, as Sydney tended to upset the forum adjudicating his case. The Police were always keen on a high conviction rate

A pleasant manner and the ability to hold the attention of the Judiciary in Court is a good start, whereas a shouting and difficult advocate is likely to bring out the worst in everybody. There are occasions, though, when one must stand up to a bullying judge or to a bullying advocate. There was an occasion when Sydney appeared in front of me in Court for an institution and lost but was evidently pleased and applied to me for a job, which he got. Anyway, I would prefer to take a punt on Sydney rather than be condemned to death for sitting in the front row.

Tetbury Camera Club Tetbury Camera Club take on Allcomers! As any professional sportsman will tell you, there’s not a lot that’s more likely to sharpen the senses than a bit of serious competition, and few things more satisfying than taking the top spot. With this in mind, for a number of years now we’ve taken part in annual competitions with a pair of neighbouring groups of photography enthusiasts from Cirencester and Stroud clubs. Both are larger than Tetbury, with more members to provide images, which means that the odds are a bit against us, so it is good to report that in the first few months of this year it has been a case of “won one and lost one,” with both “battles” marked very closely indeed. We won the first event against Cirencester and were then just

pipped to first place by Stroud. We’ll be showcasing some of the images featured in these competitions in the Market Hall, to coincide with the Woolsack Races on May the 28th - so if you’d be interested in seeing

We were also delighted, last year, to be invited to participate in a contest new to us – the “Tom Crowe Challenge.” Started some years ago by Thornbury Camera Club in honour their former chairman, entry requires clubs to produce pictures to illustrate a number of set subjects by eight different members. This means that it’s a kind of “team competition,” highlighting how good overall competing clubs are – having one or two talented individuals is not enough. For the 2017/2018 Challenge eleven clubs, ranging in location from Bristol to Barry and Tynedale to Tetbury, were invited to compete, with all entries being judged by Sheila Haycox, secretary for eighteen years of the Devon Photo Group - and an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. Sheila scored each image out of twenty and gave top marks to pictures that “had something special about them” - an extra ingredient – “the photographer’s input.” One of the highest scoring pictures in the competition was the image here, called “The Last Smoke”. This enigmatic shot scored twenty out of twenty and was taken by one of our members, Liz Cooper from Sherston. It helped us win joint fifth place overall - we tied with north west Bristol. This was an excellent result for a first entry into this contest, especially when you consider how much larger the north west Bristol club is than Tetbury, with access to far more members. (Even though our town seems to be growing at the fastest ever rate at the moment!) One final thought for this month: “You can find inspiration in everything, and if you can’t, look again.” That’s the title of a book written by Paul Smith, one of the country’s foremost fashion designers.

Mayor’s Piece Firstly - and most importantly… …I must warmly thank those people who braved the recent snow and ice, to check either on their neighbours or on people that they know, to see that all was well and perhaps whether any food shopping or urgent jobs needed doing. It’s good that in times of need our community pulls together, to assist those who may need extra help on a day-to-day basis. I still get asked many questions about Tetbury’s new housing developments, so here are a few of the “frequently asked questions,” with the relevant answers. Will there be more affordable housing in Tetbury? Yes, every housing development in Tetbury, except for Steepleton, has a number of affordable houses included. Both the Highfield Farm and the SIAC development have a good number of affordable homes yet to be released, as does the Bath Road development and the just-started project on Cirencester Road. Will there be Housing Association housing in the future? Yes. A new provider, Merlin, is dealing with the affordable homes on the Highfield Farm development. Developers also offer “easy purchase” schemes for firsttime buyers.

Where will future housing developments in Tetbury take place? There are two planning applications in the planning pipeline. They are on the site between the Tesco Filling Station and Northfield Road and at the Wells Masonry site on Cirencester Road. There, planning permission for new homes has been granted but the developer has proved slow to start.

How can we get more businesses in Tetbury, so that we don’t just become a “dormitory” town? To a large degree we already are a dormitory town, since employers like Autonumis and SIAC have moved out and their sites have become housing developments. But surrounding us are large employments sites; Dyson in Malmesbury are continually growing, Kemble Airfield has a good number of businesses and so does Babdown Airfield. These locations provide more employment for Tetbury people than ever before. What will the S106 money from the current 900 houses being developed be spent on? We have obtained over £1.5 million from S106 Agreements and these include over 400 affordable homes, The Goods Shed Arts Centre, The Dolphins Hall redevelopment, Sir William Romney’s Sports and Leisure Centre, provision to expand St Mary’s Primary School, provision for the elderly and town centre improvements. Will Tetbury get a bigger, better Doctor’s surgery? Plans for a new surgery are currently being worked on and several

parcels of land are currently being seriously studied for selection. I hope that a new surgery will be available within three years, but in the meantime the number of G.P.’s working at the existing Romney House Surgery has been increased. Another opportunity to ask questions about Tetbury will be at the Annual Town Meeting, where the Council and Councillors put themselves in front of the public for questions and comments. I just hope I’ve got my sermon sorted by Easter morning. It’s a tough one … Easter Day and April Fools both on the same day. How do you deal with that? I only hope my sermon is better than the “hilarious Easter pranks” that are being suggested online. For example, wrapping grapes up in coloured foil to look like little Easter eggs. Oh dear!

Then we have our wonderful service at 10.00 am on Easter morning, Sunday the 1st of April. It includes an Easter Egg Hunt in the churchyard for the children, and Easter craft activities. For the second year we will also have our Easter garden created under the altar. I find it so evocative and moving. Do pop in to see it on Easter morning - or another time. So, I wish you all joy this Eastertide - and I’ll leave you with one thought, courtesy of our lovely Daisy Hinton. She wrote: “We are our own rainbows. Miss Jackson and Mrs Wilson travelled to Ethiopia to meet our new friends and teachers and spent time teaching and learning new things. When they returned back to Tetbury, they told us all about their trip and we were all very excited and eager to hear about their time spent in Africa. They told us all about “injera” – a pancake made from a locally grown cereal called “t’ef,” which is only found in Ethiopia. Other dishes are placed on top of the injera, such as vegetables, stews and spicy sauces, and you tear bits off with your fingers and eat them all together. They also showed us photos and videos of the children from Assai Primary School and told us about their school day. Each morning, the children attend a ‘raising the flag’ ceremony in the school grounds and sing together. It is a great way to start the day! Assai Primary School is very different to St Mary’s as they have blackboards, sit in rows and there are forty-two children in

Tetbury Civic Society This is the year of our 51st Anniversary! On the 28th of February 1967, at the Town Hall, the Tetbury and District Civic Society came into being, in the presence of over one hundred people who were interested in becoming members. Without going into detail on the many things the society has done or achieved since then, let me say that we are still keeping watch over the towns planning, architecture, heritage and conservation activities, while also continuing to undertake beneficial projects on behalf of the community.

Neighbourhood Plan I have referred to this several times in earlier articles, since over the last three years or so the society has played an important role in

the Neighbourhood Planning team, which was formed to produce the fifteen-year plan for Tetbury and Tetbury Upton. The plan has now been approved by Tetbury Town Council, the Cotswold District Council, the Government Examiner and by an overwhelming vote in favour in a recent public referendum. For those unaware of its contents, why not go to the Library and read through its interesting pages relating to the environment, housing, open space, traffic and much else? The society intend to ensure that its policies and provisions are sensibly upheld.

Historic Plaques The society consider that more plaques should be displayed on certain buildings within the town centre. The purpose of so doing is to help raise its historic profile, both for tourists and for residents. Having recently carried out a survey and consulted the records of our many listed buildings, we now feel that at least twelve more buildings, structures and pathways could be commemorated. The Town Council is supportive of this idea and have generously agreed some financial assistance – and the History of Tetbury Society will also be assisting with information from their archives. Investigative work has already begun, involving the seeking of agreement from property owners and considering the written content, design and manufacture of the plaques. The activities of the Civic Society involve time being devoted to matters which are interesting to the members. This especially applies to the time given by the Executive Committee, which would welcome additional support. The Joy of Tulips When I was very young I remember my parents taking my sister and me to the tulip gardens at Keukenhof, in the Netherlands. Perhaps that is where my love of these bright blousy flowers comes from? When I think of Keukenhof, I think of tulips planted in dramatic drifts of the same colour and variety, perhaps interspersed with hyacinths. Personally, I much prefer Tetbury in Bloom’s mix of varieties, heights, shapes and colours, for those of us with more modest gardens and open spaces to care for. Nowhere can the displays of tulips be better seen than in the flowerbeds around the town, which are also planted with different

coloured foliage shrubs and perennials all bursting into life again after a long cold winter. For example, the coppery coloured new growth of the spiraea “gold flame,” the dark leafed heucheras, the bright yellow variegated leaves of the euonymus and the fresh new growth of the evergreen choisyas; they all compliment the brilliant colours of the tulips and offer a promise of warmer weather from now onwards. We leave the bulbs in situ from year-toyear, we just remove the deadheads so the tulip doesn’t waste energy trying to make seed. In June, we remove all foliage, before mulching with a mix of compost and well-

History of Tetbury Society The HOTS meeting on the 1st of March was “snowed off!” Our Chairman, Jane Haines, decided to cancel the meeting “with a heavy heart.” It means our AGM will be held a month late this year, but the reports have been circulated and the officers expected to be re-elected. The talk about the “Battle of Nibley Green” will be re-scheduled to a later meeting. With no meeting to report you may find a snippet from our archives interesting. It is taken from an original Tetbury Advertiser issued in March of 1889, but it reprints an extract from a book published in 1770, so it gives an impression of Tetbury and Long Newnton from about 250 years ago: ‘Tetbury is a tolerable good town pleasantly situated on a rising ground. The houses in general are near and handsome; but there

is a great scarcity of water, the inhabitants being obliged to fetch it from wells and brooks at a considerable distance. The market house is in a good condition, and great quantities of yarn are sold at it weekly by the poor people, who, in return take

wool and such necessaries as they are in want of. The church is a venerable Gothic structure, and in it are several handsome monuments. Here is a free school, and an almshouse for eight poor people; and at the end of the town is a very high bridge of considerable length, half of which is in Wiltshire. The government of this town is vested in a bailiff, who is chosen annually and assisted by some of the principal inhabitants. The weekly market is on Wednesday; and the town is distant from London 99 miles.’ ‘Near Tetbury are the remains of Beverston Castle, formally called Bureston, from the number of blue stones found near it. A little to the north of Malmesbury is another village, called Newton, or Long Newton. It is pleasantly situated, and commands an advantageous prospect of Malmesbury church, as also of Charleton House and park, where the Earls of Berkshire had a seat before the civil wars, when it was demshotolished by the soldiers. At the upper end of the village was the seat of Sir Giles Estcourt, lord of the manor. It is said that this village was built instead of one that stood near it a little higher in the fields; and this is confirmed by the foundation of houses being frequently discovered by the plough. The old ones being destroyed by fire, the inhabitants rebuilt it on the present spot, from whence it received the name Newton or New Town.’ The way the wool trade operated in the •market hall is interesting. The church referred to is the original St. •Marys’ that was demolished in 1777. Long Newnton was in Wiltshire until •1930. not have a copy of an etching •thatWeisdoreferred to in that Advertiser. We shall shortly be opening the train carriage, since Will Cook and his hard-working gang have spent all their spare time bringing this Finnish carriage up to scratch. Half will be used to host various workshops and small training sessions, so if you are looking to run craft lessons, or if maybe you are a local artist, poet or music teacher, we want to hear from you. The other part of the carriage will run in conjunction with the Whistle Stop Café, which will be starting up again soon after its winter break.

We launched on the 22nd of March with the movie “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.” During the school holidays we will also be showing movies in the afternoon for a younger audience, including, (we hope,) “Coco.” For now, we will be showing films every Thursday at 7.00 pm, (doors open at 6.30 pm). Roles include: manning the Box Office, serving refreshments, and Projectionist/Technician. This April we have something for everyone, whether it’s tribute band “Wrong Jovi,” music from Tetbury’s very own Community Choir, or “Iron and Oak,” featuring local musician Heather Bristow. For both children and grown-ups alike, “Little Howards Big Show for Kids” promises a great afternoon of fun and laughter. We present “Watching Out” by the Everyman Theatre, and a weekend when we have a series of events with acclaimed pianist William Howard, starting with “In Love with the Piano” in the morning of Saturday 21st. That afternoon, join William as he explores Chopin’s 4th Ballade. A Recital follows on the Sunday when William presents a programme of romantic piano works before finishing off on the Monday with an event aimed primarily at Year Ten pupils, but suitable for all ages, as he performs a selection of short piano works spanning a range of styles, discussing the distinctive features of each piece before inviting comments and questions from the audience. Sir William Romney’s School Spelling Bee Finalists Over the last few months, all Sir William Romney Y7 students have been taking part in the National Languages Spelling Bee competition. As the school’s champions, Chandra Andrews, Kitty Harris and Marjiya Rahman went on to represent the school at last night’s regional finals. They had to spell as many French words as possible in under one minute. The words are randomly selected from a list of 150 words. The competition was grueling, having to face many schools from the entire South West, and although they did not progress to the Cambridge University national finals, Chandra, Kitty and Marjiya gave their best performance on the night and came very close. We are so proud of them! Our Y8 champions (Iola Hillicker and Lucie Dannemann-Scott) will be taking on the Spanish Translation Bee competition regional finals in Westminster University in June. Girlforce! To celebrate International Women’s Day in March, we took 14 students to the Girlforce Festival in Gloucester to celebrate the benefits of having an active lifestyle on women’s physical and mental health. Our amazing girls got the chance to try self-defence, pilates, disco spinning, cardio tennis and cheerleading - and they loved them all! After a feel-good glittery makeover, the last fifteen minutes of the day involved everyone joining together to celebrate girl power with an amazing neon “clubbercise” workout. We will be able to bring some of the activities into school in the not too distant future. All the girls were a credit to themselves, their families and the school. Well done girls!

Having got to know many of the regular faces visiting us at The Priory, we knew we wanted to make sure our menu had food that everyone would love. Whether it was a light lunch, a classic fish and chips or one of our signature pizza wood-oven pizzas you fancied, this menu was designed by our chefs not to disappoint. The menu also features daily specials, depending on what’s in season, local, and tasting delicious. We also wanted to continue our commitment to having a huge focus on the province of ingredients, working with the very best local suppliers of the region.

With our hand-stretched mozzarella from Godsell’s in Leonard Stanley, local leaf grown by Ros over at Adeline Farm, and our Butcher Jesse Smith’s only up the road, these are just a few of our amazing suppliers, delivering us great, local produce every day. Our February theatre trip was to the Bristol Hippodrome to see the musical “Wicked.” This show is based on the characters of the Wizard of Oz. Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s 2003 musical is billed on the untold story of the Witches of Oz and is adapted from the Gregory Maguire’s 1995 fantasy novel of the same name. It portrays the life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West and describes how and why she

became so wicked. It looks at “another side” of Oz and is effectively a prequel to the famous tale. This was a truly colourful performance, the scenery and the costumes were wonderful, and it was a very uplifting show. Some of our coach party did not attend the show but had a trip to Bristol to shop or visit friends. If you see details of any of our trips, do contact the committee if you just want the coach ride. Our March outing was to the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, which is a lovely old ornate theatre. We left Tetbury in

the morning, so we could shop and lunch, which makes for a great day out. The performance we saw was “Pressure,” which is a thriller about the planning for the D-Day landings and how vital it was to know the weather in advance, in order that the plans were possible and to ensure that thousands of servicemen were not killed before they had even landed. The acting was superb. The cast was headed by David Haig and included Malcolm Sinclair and Laura Rogers, but the whole cast were amazing, and everyone gave a very slick performance. In April the Theatre Group is going to The Water Mill at Newbury to see The Rivals, which is a comedy by Richard Sheridan and in May we are going on a day trip to Malvern for a matinee performance of “This House,” which is from the National Theatre and West End. Westonbirt School’s 90th Birthday There has been a house on the site of Westonbirt School since at least the 13th Century, and Westonbirt is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1066, when Lord Ednoth lived at the Manor. Beyond this, there is little information about the house until 1665, when Westonbirt House came into the Holford family as Richard Holford married the young heiress of the estate, Sarah. From then on, six generations of Holford’s owned and managed the estate for over 250 years. The first three generations did not live at Westonbirt but married and made their homes in London. There, they worked as lawyers, managing the estate as absentee landlords. Their wealth was greatly increased by their lucrative jobs as “Masters in Chancery,” and by investments in property and shares. In 1823, Sir Richard’s great grandson George Peter Holford retired to the new house which had replaced the original manor house at Westonbirt. Together with his son, Robert Stayner Holford, they laid out new gardens and planted the first trees, in 1829; this later became

Westonbirt Arboretum. At the age of 30, Robert inherited the estate - and in 1864 he employed architect Lewis Vulliamy to design and build the grand country house at Westonbirt that still stands today. Robert’s son George Lindsay Holford inherited from his father in 1892 but died in 1926. That year, Westonbirt House was listed for sale in The Times newspaper. It was not a financially secure time, being less than ten years from the end of World War 1, and there was an economic recession looming. Even Lord Rothschild considered Westonbirt House to be too expensive for him to run. There was a real possibility that it might have to be pulled down, just as many other Victorian mansions were at that time. Thankfully, there was a charity at the time called “The Martyrs Memorial Trust,” which was actively seeking potential properties to convert into boarding schools. The

Reverend Percy Warrington, a Trustee and Vicar of Monkton Coombe near Bath, was advised if its availability. In August 1927, he was persuaded to have a look at Westonbirt House and was bowled over when he saw it. Three weeks later he signed the contract for it to become a girls’ boarding school. The trust paid £25,000 for the site – around one twentieth of what it had cost to build, some 55 years earlier. The news was reported in the local press in 1927. On 11th May this year, Westonbirt School is to celebrate its 90th birthday, having opened its doors on 11th May 1928. The house itself will be 150 years old in 2018. Westonbirt School is celebrating this auspicious milestone with the publication of a full colour commemorative book and a grand gala evening to be held at the school on 11th May 2018. all the things we love about our Mums, and inviting all the wonderful women (Mum’s, Aunties and Grandmothers,) into playgroup for a morning of pampering, cake and special gifts. After Easter we are excited to be having some special ‘Easter Eggs’ into playgroup, which we will be able to care for and rear before watching them hatch – with the help of ‘Hatching for schools – Wiltshire’, we will have a local expert on hand to provide the equipment and knowledge to look after our very special ‘eggs’. Woolsack Races We “Woollies” are very much in full swing, organising this year’s Woolsack races, which will take place as usual on the second May Bank Holiday, the 28th of May. The usual stalls and traders are being booked and entertainment for young and old is planned. We are, of course, accepting entries for the chance to run in our world-famous races, too! “Beating a boy,” 1847 mourners. On looking round he saw that she had fallen down over a grave. She was drunk.

After the boy had made his statement to the bench, the defendant called a witness who contradicted it, and said that the boy had made use of some very improper language towards Mr Sly, which induced him to give him a few stripes with a small stick, by way of wholesome correction. The magistrates, therefore, decided on dismissing the case.

The external staircase

After a lot of hard work, we are finally to get a new display board to be fixed immediately behind our side gate a “Banksy-style” image of a copper. Look out for it when you’re passing. Plans are also in hand to restore the external staircase to the old police station, which used to be used for prisoners to be taken from the cells up to the courtroom on the first floor. Tetbury Art Society In March, Robin James gave us a fascinating talk about mosaics Robin has an unusual background for one of our demonstrators - she has two degrees and started her working career in a role in the community. Her earlier artwork was centred on textiles, colour and form, but through working with children, she became interested in mosaics.

On display were a large quantity of materials and tools, as well as samples of her work such as the “Leaping Fish” in the picture. Robin methodically talked her way through using backing materials and adhesives, and the mosaic materials that may be used, such as tiles, pebbles, shells, slate, glass and even buttons. When working with children, they have even brought along bits of Lego and “Minions” for her to embed in a mosaic! She also covered the processes involved - either starting with the backing and adding cement, tiles and grouting or else starting with the tiles face-down and adding grouting and then cement, which is left to cure. Adding an upper layer of pieces extending over the frame helps give the work some depth. Robin’s work includes a outdoor pieces, and she has produced large (twelve-metre!) mosaic, in Norway. We were advised that there are potential problems with outdoor mosaics and that, for instance, water can get into pieces of broken crockery if they’re used. Robin also told us that the cycle of wet, cold and frost, followed by drying, tends to damage glazes. Whilst there was not time for a full demonstration, we were shown how to break up a tile to produce fragments and how to use “nippers” to shape a piece for use.

Looking forward, on Wednesday the 4th of April Ray Hedger will give an oil painting demonstration and on the 2nd of May, Brian Jones will give a wood carving

demonstration. Over the long Early Spring Holiday weekend, we will hold our Spring Exhibition in the Market Hall. Ronan’s Trust is a small Gloucestershire charity that supports bereaved families, providing nurture and support through gardening and being creative together. We provide opportunities for bereaved families and individuals to work together on the land, on allotments and through seasonal gardening and craft events. Working together on the land and through crafts offers the opportunity for people to create friendships and reduce stress. Ronan’s Trust is for anyone who has suffered a close bereavement - the loss of a partner, sibling, child or parent or close friend. We have a calendar of events on offer throughout the year as well as local allotment groups and craft groups to join. Our Tetbury Bereavement Support Gardening group are starting their planting again at our allotment at Close Nursery if you would like to come along and join in they meet once a fortnight on Thursday afternoons. We also run our Bereavement Support craft group at Close Nursery and quarterly flowerarranging sessions; we hope to be adding more nature-inspired crafts soon. Tetbury WI At the end of January, we went to Bath theatre to see some modern and traditional Tango. Tango is almost balletic in its grace and we were very enthusiastic about the performance - it cheered up a winter evening consider. Also in that month, some of our members went to the GFWI ACM in Cheltenham to hear Michael Portillo speak; they were very impressed by his eloquence and how at ease he was with his audience. In February our speaker was the Gloucester poet, Peter Wyton, who appealed to those of us who enjoy verse. Socially, we also enjoyed an excellent Italian lunch at Casa. Our annual New Members’ Evening, held in February, is an informal occasion where we are able to get to know more about each other - the new ladies who have joined in the preceding year and the committee. Our monthly coffee mornings are taking place as usual. The next one will be on April the 23rd at 10.30 am in the Snooty Fox. Please come and join us if you’d like to know more about us. Patient Participation Group Urgent Care and Centres of Excellence Four times a year the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) hosts a network meeting for the PPG chairs, where new information about services is shared. At the recent meeting in February we were told of several new initiatives.

New Clinical Computer System

Having access to our online medical records has been welcomed by many people. Once you get your special password and instructions from the surgery, it is easier to book appointments online than ring the surgery. You can also order and manage your prescriptions, check test results and read your medical record. RHS has been using “Systmonline,” but integration with Cirencester means we will be switching to “EMIS.” This will allow everyone across

As the government hasn’t found enough change down the back of their sofa, the NHS has to develop a new plan for meeting the needs of patients for the next 20 years. The CCG is told what they have to do by NHS England, but they have some leeway in how they do things. The Clinical Advice and Assessment Service (CAAS) and Urgent Treatment Centres (UTC) are being mandated from the top, so the CCG must have them. But that doesn’t mean that these are not useful developments. There is enough “wiggle room” for the CCG to make sure that these new initiatives take into consideration the local area and patients. To support this NHS 111 will be developed further, both online and via telephone, which will direct patients to the right place for the right treatment at the right time.

Although we are a small school, clubs are an important part of school life… … and there are plenty for the children to choose from at Leighterton. Many of the children love sports and the first club each week is our Running Club. This is very popular with all the children and they run around our lovely school grounds. During the session, some of them run several kilometres and all try their very best. Another popular club is our Dance Club which is run by Sarah, from ‘Dazzle’ and the older children love our recently introduced

love; they’ve been making secret book boxes using containers that look like books, and decorating them so they can be disguised, filled and hidden on a book shelf. Lots of children attend Construction Club, building using kits and “junk.”

Many older children run clubs for the younger children. They plan what they will be doing during each session and organise resources and time. This term we have a group of leading Fun and Games Club. The children play a variety of games, including board games. They have also been making things and last week they created book marks and “fortune tellers.” Another group of Year 6 children are leading a Coding Club for the children in Haymead and Ridge classes. They are working on programs such as “Scratch” on the laptops, to find out how coding works. The club members work on challenges, and are planning on exploring a program called “Kodu” to write simple games. Breakfast Club runs in school from 7.30 am each morning. The children are given breakfast and can socialise and play with their friends before they go into class. After School Club is also popular and runs from the end of the school day until 6.00 pm. The children have a range of planned activities to choose from, or they may choose their own. They are also given a snack.

Music is important at Leighterton too and a huge proportion of our children learn to play a musical instrument. These children sometimes work together as an ensemble and rehearse as an orchestra – and we also have several Recorder clubs, where intermediate and advanced recorder players are taught. Dolphins Dramatic Society Oh, my goodness, how time flies! Just two weeks and it will be curtain up on “Abigail’s Party.” Our Director Helen Ryder and all the cast have been rehearsing tirelessly and as such, Amelia Frederico, Ian Smith, Martin Porter, Jackie Rymer and Carla Gallagher have taken on the persona of the characters, they are truly amazing, so the play is as near to the original as amateur dramatic society could possibly get. As one would expect a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to produce such a challenging production and this one is no exception. Rick Hicks has been in charge of making furniture - 70’s style shelving unit with the drop down bar space. As usual, Anne Smith, Jenny Miles and Ian Smith have constructed papered and painted an authentic set and to ensure the production is shown in the best possible light, David Hudson will be beating his usual track from Cornwall to Tetbury to work his special magic. So do come and see for yourselves

Abigail’s Party is one of the most iconic plays of the 20th century, thanks partly to the BBC’s now-legendary ‘Play for Today’ series, which in 1977 launched it as a comedic tour-de-force and imprinted it on the English national psyche; it’s as popular today as it was in 1977. Girlguiding The Rainbows have been having fun learning about different sports… …from the winter Olympics - and even trying some themselves. With some creativity and imagination, they enjoyed cardboard skiing, an ice luge and peg skiers racing downhill. World Book Day prompted them to talk about their favourite books. They had great fun acting out “The Gruffalo” then making up their own stories and we will also be having a go at writing our own books. The 2nd Tetbury Brownies have been doing their Science Investigator badge. The girls have taken part in experiments, made indicators from blueberries and grape juice, made fizzing bath bombs and slime, and constructed buildings out of spaghetti, marshmallows and giant polydrons. After donating mince pies, chocolate coins,

selection boxes and everyday items to the Food Bank, they have received a letter of thanks and an invitation to visit the distribution centre in Cirencester.

Summer Show and Parade Yes, I know it’s not till August - Sunday the 12th of August to be exact… …but there are exciting things happening and it is important you all know well in advance so that you can plan for the event! As always there will be the wonderful Flower Show aspect of the day with the big white marquee displaying fabulous flowers, vegetables, cakes and craft exhibits. The entry forms for these will be at Tetbury Hardware or online from 1st June. On the recreation ground there will be a plethora of stalls organised by Kathryn Lemoi and a wide variety of activities arranged by Penny and Nigel Dobson. All this, plus a variety of food and drink to ensure you keep up your energy levels. The Parade will take place once again – this will be its fifth year - and because it has grown much larger there now has to be a road closure to ensure that the participants are safe from the general traffic. The majority of those who live and trade in Long Street have already received a letter stating the date and time, but just in case the note has gone astray please note that the road will be closed on Sunday the 12th of August from 12.15 pm to 1.15 pm.

Entrants will also take part in The Parade and their outfits will be judged at the recreation ground by Summer Show President Ken White and our very generous sponsor Hayley. There will be three theme categories: 3 – 5 years - Super Heroes 6 – 9 years - Film Characters 10 – 14 years - 1918 military theme, or fashion of the era (to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War 1.) And, of course, prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each category will be awarded £25, £15 and £5 respectively. Participants will need

to complete an entry form and these can be picked up from either Capelli or Tetbury Town Council also from 1st of June and returned no later than Monday July the 2nd. Let’s make the Summer Parade bigger than ever! Take part either with your children, organisation or representing your business. Last year Capelli came as the Land Army Girls and Boxer paraded many of their vehicles, plus the Eggsplorer Wacky Race cart. Tetbury Town Council entered their truck “Hawaiian style,” with staff and councillors dressed for the occasion. Tetbury Community Choir Singing is a universal expression of emotion, not just of birds, but of many other forms of animal life, in the air, on the earth, and in the sea. Recordings have been made of rather haunting “Whale Song” deep in the oceans and human beings across the planet all sing about their life experiences, both happy and sad. meet our nine new Beavers after Easter. The Scouts returned after the half term holiday to an evening of making, cooking and tossing pancakes. The Scouts were “quite” successful with the tossing and not too many pancakes landed on the floor. They have continued working on the skills challenge too, and last week they brushed up on their map reading skills by having an “indoor car rally.” The Scouts had to work out grid references to be able to answer questions, this enabled them to get pieces of equipment to make a pioneering project car. They particularly liked the “refuelling spots,” where chocolate was consumed to

They made water filters, looked at the rubbish that can harm wildlife, and made presentations about endangered animals. We’re particularly proud of how the Beavers have raised money for an orphanage in Malawi to help them create a rocket stove, to cook for the children in their care. The Beavers took on an environmental challenge to save energy and their families sponsored them. We’ll be sad to say goodbye to eight of our Beavers over the next few weeks but wish them well in our new Cub pack - and we are excited to

Tetbury Nursery Playgroup Spring has sprung at long last, at playgroup! We have been outside looking at the changes in the garden. With all the rainfall our water butt is being kept full and the children have plenty of water for their mud kitchen and watering the garden. Inside, the children in the crèche and playgroup room have been making a spring and Easter display. Before breaking up for the Easter holidays we held an Easter hunt and cake/ biscuit sale, raising money for playgroup. In the past month the children have been looking at “shapes.” They have enjoyed hunting for them in them in the environment. The children have also been doing a lot of cooking, with the emphasis on healthy eating, the mini quiches were a big hit at snack time.

In pre-school the children have enjoyed a further visit from Teresa Bell from St Mary’s school. This time she made treasure boxes out of egg boxes. The pre-school children now come into playgroup on their own, saying goodbye to their parents at the door, in preparation for school. The letter basket has started, and already we have had some interesting items bought in for each letter. The play-and-stay group has gone from strength to strength, and it has been lovely seeing so many families enjoying the facilities and activities. However, as always, health and safety must be considered, so whilst we welcome all families we are now having to limit the numbers. Once the number limit has been met, a board will be put outside to indicate that we are full. We understand this may be frustrating for you, but as always, the safety of families is our priority.

The staff have been undertaking further inhouse training and we have had a speech therapist come to give us a talk about speech and communication in young children and babies. The evening was very useful, and everyone came away with some fresh ideas on how to help children progress in their language development. Wacky Races With just a few weeks remaining before the seventh running of the Tetbury Lions Wacky Races event, the club can advise that all arrangements are going well for this hugely popular event, and that fifteen teams have already signed up. Guaranteed to give thrills and spills, (and on ocassion a bruise or two,) the event will take place on Bank Holiday Monday the 7th of May, this year.

To address the situation, the recreation ground and the Tetbury Town Footbal Club site in Cirencester Road, will be available for all day parking at a small fee. There are two other major new initiatives being intrduced this year. Firstly, in addition to the big screen near the start in the Chipping car park, there will be a second big screen for all those who watch the event from near the finish at Millennium Green. A further camera will allow full coverage of the event and so help minimise what is otherwise considerable pedestrian movement. The season really kicks off with our Open Day at the Sir William Romney’s School courts on the 15th of April, where new members are particularly welcome. Please see our website, or posters around town, for details. This year, we are going to renew that quest with free “rusty racquets” sessions for new joiners. The coaching programme for 2018 carries on with Steve Johnson and looks like: Easter camp for juniors in the afternoons •from the 9th to the 13th of April. • Monday evening coaching and fitness. • Saturday mornings: 1 - 1.30pm – pre-school children. 1.30 - 2.30pm – school age children – bookable through Steve. 2.30 - 3.30pm – “pay and play” session.

In 2018 we will be holding club tournaments on the 20th of May, the 15th of June and the 9th of September, and our usual ballot for Wimbledon tickets, (open to all members,) will be held during club night in late April. News from Christ Church Dear Friends, I have had many a moment, transcendent in nature, where I feel deeply connected to something bigger than myself. I expect you have, too. I often think in church life we spend too much time indoors, so I was delighted to discover a thing called “Forest Church.” Forest Church is what happens when a group of people meet in the great outdoors, to explore our relation to God within creation itself. It is a newish expression of worship which draws on much older traditions, when sacred places and practices were outside. You might be familiar with Forest School and there is plenty of evidence that spending time in the open air is good for our physical and mental well-being. Forest Church is open to all ages, and is not “just for kids,” but really can bring folk of all ages together. It can take a range of forms; going on meditative walks, making outdoor labyrinths or making pictures and sculptures from natural materials we find around us. I think of it as church “getting your hands dirty.” Often local stories of the land are celebrated and valued. We are looking to explore this, and to that end we are inviting Reverend Cate Williams, the Diocesan Missioner, to come and give an introduction to Forest Church. The date has yet to be confirmed, but it will be in April! Cate has got quite a bit of experience of leading forest church groups, and I am sure hers will be an inspirational introduction to the subject. News from St Michael’s As they say, “Time goes faster as one gets older.” I can’t believe that we are in spring! Each season is lovely, but although the snow is lovely to see, it does cause disruption. Schools were closed, public transport stopped, and supermarkets ran out of food, in March. Talking to a long-time friend whom I started school with, we said how we were expected to attend school in the snow, even if it meant walking a few miles! The only time I can remember my school closing due to snow was at the end of my secondary education, in the late 70’s.

Isidore will join priests and parishioners from throughout the Clifton Diocese for the Celebration of the Chrism Mass in Clifton Cathedral. Bishop Declan will Bless the Oils of Catechumens, Chrism and the Sick, to be used in each parish throughout the year. On Maundy Thursday we recall the washing of the feet of the disciples, before the celebration of the Last Supper when Jesus offered up His Body and Blood. Well - back to spring. When the sun has come out it has been lovely in the longer evenings. A couple of weeks ago, I arrived at St Peter’s Church in Cirencester and just sat in my car for a few minutes, listening to the birds tweeting. The sun was shining, and as I walked along the path from the drive there were snowdrops in the ground. It felt good to be in spring! Since the beginning of the year we have held a Quiz evening, a cake stall and an Irish night. We have further events planned in the months after Easter. Each year we fundraise for parish refurbishment, local charities, “Achieve Africa” and CAFOD. Achieve Africa is a charity in Nigeria set up by Fr Isidore a few years ago. Last year you may recall that Fr Isidore raised money for the charity by taking part in the Wool Sack race on Bank Holiday Monday.

My name is Jennie Gray and I am an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Adviser, covering the South Cotswolds. Understanding and adapting to the challenges presented by dementia can be difficult. As a Dementia Adviser, I have built up a working knowledge of things that can help with these challenges. I am able to pass this knowledge on and provide both support and strategies that can help you or your loved one adapt and cope with these changes. Our service offers non-medical support to anyone diagnosed with dementia, and to their family and friends. The support is very much tailored to each individual and is normally done during a home visit, although I can meet you at a mutually convenient location. I can provide information, signposting to useful organisations, and specialist knowledge around the changes brought about by dementia, as well as empathy and support. There is a wealth of information available to people living with dementia and this can

be very confusing and overwhelming. I can work with you to identify what information is helpful and will offer further explanation and clarification as required. There are many organisations that can provide support to help people with dementia to remain living independently in their own homes. I can explain who these organisations are, what support they can provide and even refer you to them. I can also explain how the process works after referral. Our service is often requested at particularly challenging times. Key touch points with the service tend to be around the time of diagnosis, when changes start to impact on everyday living, when people may need more support to live independently, when symptoms become more challenging and when independent living is no longer an option. As a Dementia Adviser I am a listening ear for those that need it and will provide empathy and understanding at these times, alongside practical help. For example, a decision to move into residential care can be very emotional and I can support with coming to terms with this, as well as provide information on suitable local care homes.
