Young by Name Train of thought… Growing up in a London suburb, half an hour by train from Charing Cross, I became a seasoned railway traveller at an early age. The slam of compartment doors and the rattle of trains on the line are part of the soundtrack to my childhood. When I went ‘up north’ to university, I enjoyed the longer train rides because I always met interesting people. From my current perspective as a parent, the thought of a teenage girl seeking out strangers on trains makes me shudder, but for the ‘teenage me,’ it was all an adventure. On boarding, I’d choose my compartment carefully, walking through the corridor to find the most interesting-looking passengers. Before the first stop we’d be sharing the sweets and biscuits bought for the journey, while discussing the meaning of life. We felt we were striking up life-long friendships, but of course they never lasted beyond our destination. This is probably just as well, particularly with the middleaged lady who invited me to bring my swimming costume and sunbathe in her garden any time I liked.

Mr Right in the form of a random fellow passenger? I wondered whether she had a season ticket. If you didn’t want to chat, too bad. The Quiet Coach had yet to be invented. For a bit of peace, you went out to stand in the corridor. These days, when travelling by train, I always book a seat in the Quiet Coach to avoid irritating mobile phone conversations. This week, too weary to trek to my reservation at the far end of the train, I settled down in a normal carriage, bracing myself for the noise. To my astonishment, it was as silent as the Quiet Coach. Every occupant was staring at an electronic device, most

& I wasn’t the only one to treat train travel like a social occasion. Once, as I followed a group of girl students into a compartment, its only prior occupant, a middle-aged lady, gave a deep sigh. “So we’re all girls together.” She sounded disappointed. Was the sole purpose of her trip to search for

of them further isolated by earbuds or headphones. The train might just as well have had no windows, because none of them once looked out to enjoy the view. The ever-changing view: another great benefit of railway travel. I still can’t board a train without Robert Louis Stephenson’s poem “From a Railway Carriage” popping into my head at some point along the way “…And ever again, in the wink of an eye, Painted stations whistle by.” So I was pleased to learn recently of a care home that has mocked-up a railway carriage for the benefit of elderly residents, too frail for real trips. Complete with scrolling scenery behind fake windows, and with an excellent refreshment service, it offers them all the pleasures of train travel without them having to leave the building. I bet they’d be great conversationalists too. Debbie Young www.authordebbieyoung.com

Lion’s Den to the Jet Age Museum at Staverton and a canal boat day out, from Bradford on Avon. Our own Lions ‘Community Services’ team held another Film Show at the Goods Shed recently, for the pupils of St Mary’s, among others. Many thanks to Lion Warren Hateley for his work in organising these events – and for the support of both the Goods Shed staff and the teachers from St Mary’s. We will be planning additional shows in the Autumn.

We had an interesting monthly meeting this month, in a new meeting location. With support from The Priory Inn we enjoyed a lively time in their Café room, dealing with lots of topics. We paid special attention to membership, engagement,

good ideas captured, and we’re looking forward to the fruit of those discussions and to the challenges the future holds. We were also fortunate enough to entertain two speakers! Roger Bellairs from the ‘Friends of Tetbury Community Transport,’ and Lisa Hepworth, Social Prescriber and ‘Community Link Worker’ from Tetbury’s Phoenix Surgery. Roger revealed some astonishing facts about FOTCT. In 2018 they organised fiftytwo minibus and two hundreds car trips, delivering seven hundred passengers to their destinations - covering eight thousand miles in total, at a cost of £300. All other costs were covered by contributions from their passengers. Fabulous. I’m pleased to be able to say “Well done and thank you” to all their volunteer drivers. They are always looking for additional volunteers, so if you can help please see their contact details on Page 3. Lisa Hepworth, Social Prescriber, then joined us. As you may have seen on the ‘Tetbury Cares’ page last month, Lisa provides a valuable link to resources for those in our community who need support from the many voluntary and care organisations available. She works to help organise contact for those suffering from loneliness, bereavement and many other issues – and I’m pleased to say is also actively helping Lion Ken White with our ‘Men in Sheds’ incentive. She really is a fantastic lady! Socialising recently, our club members enjoyed an evening out at ‘Number 65’ in Long Street. It really is one of Tetbury’s ‘little jewels.’ Upcoming social events include visits

An annual payment of £13 buys you into the Lions 200 Club lottery. We use these subscriptions to help local causes – and you get the chance to win a cash prize! Application forms can be obtained from Malcolm at Tetbury Hardware. Each quarter, the Tetbury Lions 200 Club makes a special prize payment of £100. This month’s £100 prize winner was Mr P R Williams. Many congratulations to him from everyone in the 200 Club.

We Lions have several public events to take part in, during April. On the 6th and 13th of April we will hold our annual Easter Raffle with tickets for sale at several locations on the streets of Tetbury. We’re hoping for your continued support of course – or perhaps just a big “Hello!” Additionally, on the 12th of April, we will hold our annual Bucket Shake at Tesco; many thanks to them, again, for their support with this.

And last – but of course never least – the eighth running of our signature ‘Wacky Races’ event is looming. We’ll be unleashing soap-box carts from all over the country on the unsuspecting public, on Bank Holiday Monday the 6th of May. Be sure to come along and enjoy the fun, won’t you? It’s now a very established event in the Tetbury calendar, with big-screen TV’s to get you close to the action, lots of stalls and attractions

for the whole family to enjoy, and of course the thrills and spills of those soap box carts trying to out-do each other on the run to the Millennium Green. Since Chipping Street has been beautifully resurfaced recently, we’re hoping for some blindingly fast times. Come along and give generously! All funds raised from these days will be used to help Longfield’s Hospice, who we are supporting throughout this Lion year. Our next Club meeting will take place on Wednesday the 3rd of April at our new venue, the Priory Inn, so please feel free to join us if you’d like to see what we’re up to in the area, or if you think you might like to help.

Dolphins Dramatic Society Nearly there! By the time this hits your doormat we will have just three weeks to go before The Ghost Train pulls into The Dolphins Hall, New Church Street, Tetbury. Tickets are on sale at Tetbury Hardware, London Road - and as always Malcolm will be doing a grand job as our box office. You can also buy tickets online at www.dolphinsdrama. uk - and you should hurry; you really don’t want to miss out on this show. It has a great set, suspense and comedy, and a wellstocked bar to keep you hydrated! I mentioned that Alex Ball, our Director, had spent a session with the actors getting to ‘know and understand’ their character. Several people have asked me what it entails, so if you are wondering what this is all about – here’s the answer. Most acting books and teachers use similar principles as a basis of their pedagogy: i.e. Stanislavski’s system. Constantin Stanislavski is regarded as ‘The Father of Modern Acting,’ and every acting technique is based on his seven questions, which are an invaluable foundation on which to build a character.

Basically, Stanislavsky didn't want actors to simply create a facsimile of an emotion. He wanted them to feel the emotion. Therefore, if a scene calls for extreme grief, actors need to put themselves in the mindset of the character's situation, so that they can genuinely experience the feelings of intense sadness. Naturally, the same goes for all the other emotions. Sometimes, of course, the scene is so dramatic and the character so human that these intense emotions come naturally. However, for actors not able to connect with the character's emotional state, Stanislavsky’s teaching encourages

performers to reach into their personal memories and draw upon comparable life experiences. Well that’s what Alex encouraged all of us to do – and it works! Come along and see for yourself between the 25th and the 27th of April. You will definitely have a good night out. As mentioned in the last article we need to borrow some props. Luckily someone has lent the society a railway lantern, but we still need a parrot cage. (One that is easy to carry.) If you are able to help, please contact Jenny Miles on 01666 503059. PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATORS

LEARN HOW TO USE THEM! In April, the Town Council will install four new public access defibrillators to serve the town. Find out where they are and learn how to use them at our free training sessions and YOU will be able to help when someone is in need. ANYONE can use public access defibrillators in an emergency, even without training. You shouldn’t be afraid of using a defibrillator if someone has had a cardiac arrest. They are very easy to use – different models look a little different but they all function in broadly the same way. The machine gives clear spoken instructions and all you have to do is follow them; the machine won’t shock someone unless that is what they need. If you come across someone who is unconscious, unresponsive, not breathing or not breathing normally, they’re in cardiac arrest. The most important thing is to call 999 and start CPR to keep the blood flowing in their brain and around their body. After a cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces someone’s chance of survival by 10 per cent. If you’re on your own, don’t interrupt the CPR to go and get a defibrillator. If it’s possible, send someone else to find one. When you call 999, the operator can tell you if there’s a public access defibrillator nearby.

Tetbury already had machines outside the Visitor Information Centre and Tesco – the four new ones will be at the Goods Shed, on the Football Clubhouse at the Recreation Ground, outside the St Marys Centre on St Mary’s Road and on the Football Clubhouse at Preston Park. The Doctors Surgery has a defibrillator (during open hours only.) The First Responders at the Fire Station have another for their own use. The cost of installing the four new machines was reduced from around £6,500 to around £1,000, thanks to the generosity of Cotswold District Council, Tesco and the Tetbury Lions Club joining with the Town Council. R&J Pearce have also kindly offered to install one at no cost. Our warmest thanks go to all our partners, for their match-funding and assistance. Why don’t you learn how to use a defibrillator and get some other first aid skills? FREE training for 45 people has been arranged with Gloucestershire County Council at the following three sessions: • • •

Leighterton Primary School At Leighterton Primary School, learning how to stay safe, is one of the most important things we do. Recently, PC Leah Davis, one of the School Beat Officers, came to visit us and teach us about staying safe online. As a whole school, we worked together to complete a quiz so that she could see what we already knew. She asked us about the type of information we share with other people when we are online, and from this, we agreed which information we should definitely not share. We all watched a film that reinforced the message about not to share information online in an exciting way. PC Davis also worked with the Year 5 and 6 children, in Ridge Class, in a workshop about Internet Safety. We discussed what we use the Internet for and talked about the games we play online. We found out

The children felt proud of the certificate presented to them by the NSPCC

about PEGI ratings which tell us how old children should be to play individual electronic games and why it is a good idea to keep these in mind when we are choosing games to play. We also talked in more detail about which

information is safe and is not safe to share online - and we played a game where we had to sort information into what can be shared and what should not be shared. Did you know that you should never share the name of your school, your address or pictures of your house, so that strangers cannot find out about where you live, or might be? It is also important that you keep passwords private, so nobody else can access your information. An important aspect we discussed was about using mobile phones safely - and thinking very carefully about what photos we send and who we send them to. We also watched a film about a child who had sent a silly picture to a friend and that this picture had been shared with many of their friends and with strangers. We learned not to share anything that we wouldn’t want our Granny to see, or to know about us. This week we have welcomed the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to our school and they delivered the ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ programme. They ran assemblies for each class, and they did more work with the children from Ridge Class. This workshop reinforced the message about staying safe online, too. We discussed Childline and talking to an adult that we trust, if we are worried about anything. This week we will also be fundraising for the NSPCC by bringing in spare change and making a line of coins in each class. We will measure the lines to see which class has made the longest line and these coins will be sent to the NSPCC to help them with their work. By Rory and Holly If you would like to find out more or come and look around Leighterton Primary School, you are very welcome to contact the school office on (01666) 890273 and we would be delighted to show you round at a convenient time. who are considering offering their muchappreciated support. Our club Opening Gala takes place on Sunday the 14th of April - the first members’ get together of the year to try out our newly refurbished home green and to see if our bowling muscles are still working. Hopefully they will be, as it’s straight into friendly and senior’s games midweek and weekends from the following Wednesday, with Ladies and Men’s League matches following swiftly on, on Mondays and Tuesdays. We have a packed schedule this year and could really do with some more players to help. Speaking of which, we have an Open Day on Saturday the 27th of April, for those of you who’d like to come and see what

Tetbury Bowls Club bowling’s all about. The club will be open from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, with members there to introduce you to the basics of the game and provide equipment for you to have a go yourself. It’s free, just turn up wearing flat-soled shoes. For more information see our advert this month, too. Social Fridays are still popular and will continue into the summer season, although they become more relaxed as most social members come to meet friends and watch a match with a cuppa or a drink from the bar. Last year we spent a lot of time under sun umbrellas – here’s hoping for more of the same this year! Tetbury Bowls Club

It’s almost time to dust off our outdoor kit and polish our bowls, ready for the start of our new season – and we can’t wait! The big beech hedge at the back of the green has been trimmed and tidied thanks to KP Enterprises, and our new fence at the front is sporting the advertising boards for last year’s sponsors who will hopefully continue to support us this year too! There is still plenty of room for more boards; we’re waiting to hear from several other sponsors

Tetbury Cricket Club Good day fellow athletes, another month seems to have flown by and our thoughts are quickly turning to preseason preparations. Quite where the last six months have gone, I don’t know...

We have the first of our pre-season friendlies - and ‘Cricket Force Day,’ on Sunday the 7th of April, where we will be working on The Rec and the facilities, getting things ready for league cricket. Which means it is also probably time for me to consider venturing up into the loft, to dust off my own pads.

One thing I do know though, is how great it is to see so many girls joining in at our Winter nets, with last week’s session seeing enough for two teams attending! The girls are progressing at a great speed under the guidance of our Head of Youth Development, Ryz, with some of the older ones even starting to train with proper cricket balls! It’s great to see numbers increasing each week and if there is anyone else out there who wants to join in, do come along on a Friday evening at SWR Leisure from 6.00 to 7.15 pm on a Friday evening.

Thanks again for taking the time to listen to the latest goings on at our cricket club, should you be interested in playing, volunteering or just finding out a little more, just drop us a note at tetburycricketclub@ gmail.com. Speak soon, PJ

The last month has also seen us hold an extremely late (for several reasons) End of Season presentation and it was a fine evening hosted at the Snooty Fox. There were a few sore heads on the Saturday morning, but it was great to have the opportunity to celebrate individual achievements from 2018 with our players, sponsors and key members of the local community. Even more special that I managed to pick up a gong or two myself...

Eating Out coatings, but the arancini lacked any depth of blue cheese flavour – a shame considering how many delicious blue cheeses there are - and they didn’t boast much mushroom, either. The bon-bons needed more spice for my taste but they were still good. Both probably needed more seasoning but perhaps that’s my weary, ageing taste buds…

If ever a dreary day called for treating oneself, this was it. Having gone out with Flossy to do some errands, we decided it’d be nice to cheer things up with a spot of lunch – but where...? When she asked me to choose, my increasingly addled brain couldn’t remember all the places I’d written about, so we chanced The Ragged Cot, concluding that, if it had been ‘done’ before, it must’ve been ages ago. And, as we’ve seen, in the pub restaurant world, many things can change, even in a short time.

Well, firstly, the stylish and understated décor was as before and the dining room just as light and spacious, so that was a good start. Unsurprisingly on such a drizzly day, it was busy, but they readily found us a table - another plus. The menu had lost some of its previous sparkle to my mind but, that said, there were some very tasty-sounding choices all the same. For example, our starters were blue cheese and mushroom arancini and Indian spiced cauliflower bonbons with chutney and raita. In truth, both lacked the ‘punch’ they’re always talking about on MasterChef. They were good to eat, with lovely crispy

To follow, there was chicken breast, bubble and squeak, winter greens and onion jus, and pork loin, chive mash, pan roasted beetroot and green peppercorn sauce. Flossy’s chicken was a tad dry – a bit disappointing because, whilst cooking whole chicken breasts at home can be tricky, I’d expect an experienced chef to be better able to carry it off. Since the winter greens were separate, she felt the bubble and squeak had been somewhat ‘deconstructed’, too, but that’s a minor point. Conversely, my pork loin was just about the tastiest piece of meat I’ve had in a very long time. Along with the thick, juicy pork, the mash was smooth, the beetroot sweet and earthy and the sauce rich and creamy. There were too many peppercorns, I thought, but that didn’t stop me wanting to mop the plate! Since we were ‘treating’ ourselves, I plumped for dessert - chocolate and orange cheesecake, chocolate ice cream and white chocolate shard – and ‘plump’ turned out to be the operative word when a saucer-sized individual cheesecake arrived! The lightly flavoured cake was smooth, but dense and filling, and the orange curd jelly disc on top was wonderful. Allied to the ice cream and white chocolate shard it was several spoons too far for me so, horror of horrors, I couldn’t finish it. Okay, a touch expensive for a ‘drop in’ lunch probably, but there are still some very good things here if ever you feel you need a treat. Fill

St Mary’s Playgroup Spring has sprung at Playgroup! We saw some amazing ‘efforts of love’ at our popular Valentine’s Disco starting off our fundraising for 2019. Once again, there was an amazing turn-out. Then, during the half-term, we ran our “Hungry Caterpillar

a bell tent and all amenities for full days ‘out in the forest’. We had a great team of volunteers from nationwide HQ in Swindon help our staff to make all this possible. On Thursday the 25th of April we’ll host a ‘Secret Garden Open Morning,’ with a range of activities for children and residents to enjoy. This will also provide an opportunity to the public and local councillors who have helped along the way, to celebrate this wonderful project. If you’d like to come along to see what’s going on, please get in touch for more details. Back at Playgroup, the children have been enjoying a practical focus with our new ‘creative station’ - and adding to a special display celebrating their creations. We’ve seen lots more engagement with painting sticks and fabric and lots more mark-making, (the early stages of writing,) especially from our boys, when ‘thinking outside of the box.’ Chalking on the floor, big painting, wet painting, drawing upsidedown or with crayons on the wall (on paper!) are just a few of the more imaginative ways we are inspiring the children to ‘have a go’ at making marks. Our Seedlings baby and toddler group continues to run on a Monday morning from 9.00 until 11.00 with plenty of fun and exciting activities for your little one to enjoy. These sessions are run by all of our

Welly Trail’ at the Goods Shed, which saw lots of families stretch their legs along the path, finishing up with tea and sweet treats! Thank you so much to all those involved, as well as everyone who came along to support us - between the two we raised an amazing £350. We have two Easter fundraisers coming up during April - starting with our ‘famous’ Easter Egg Hunt, for the third year running. Please tell your friends and family and get as many people involved as you can! We are also running another Easter Fair, which will be held on the 12th of April at the Market Hall. Please see our Facebook page for confirmed times.

Over the last term our Forest School has really flourished, with spring flowers appearing and warmer weather putting a spring in all our steps. The garden at Ilsom house gives us a fantastic place to explore and the support from the Town Council and HC-one Management has allowed us to expand from our four “on the go” rucksacks to a fully functional facility, complete with

DO YOU REMEMBER HOW THE FUTURE

USED TO LOOK? As you may already know, there’s an election on the 2nd of May - and a question often asked is, “Why should I vote?” After all it’s more of the same in prospect: promise the earth and give us nothing! Indeed, many of us are turned off by the political bickering and interparty squabbling which fuels the real enemy; apathy. That’s why change is needed. So, what is the “True to Tetbury” Initiative all about? Well, it’s not a political party. It’s a plan to give us our voice back. It’s a diverse group of residents, committed to representing the community as totally independent councillors. By being independent, our priorities will always lie with the welfare of our town. We will not only work for you but with you as well - able to work from the grassroots level upwards, using our foundations and our common sense. We will not make irresponsible promises in the shape of a manifesto, as many of us now see today’s manifestos as tomorrow’s broken promises. We DO however have the ideas, wishes and common sense in mind of those of you who know what the town needs and wants. We need a shakeup – starting with a transparent and accountable form of council. It is time to deliver real change and say farewell to petty party politics and agendas! Our town needs a new voice, so it can lobby on behalf of common sense and the core values that we need. One local resident said to me “Things could be worse!” and I replied “No! They could be better – a lot better!” My name is Kevin Painter, and I’m currently Deputy Mayor - but I really believe our council needs new freethinkers and a new level of passion, so I welcome this new initiative. Colin Pearce, Martin Lea, Simon Mitchell,

Gary O’Connor, Trolly Wood and Saxon Greenaway are just a few of the independent thinkers who have gathered together, and I’m sure more will now come forward to give us a team that will work - and which works for us.

HOUSING: Are you happy with the number of new homes we have? Their location, their layout, their mix? Their affordability? How many houses are allocated? Will you benefit?

HIGHWAYS, PARKING, TRANSPORT: Are you happy with the state of the roads and paths? Are you happy with Parking? Are you happy with public transport? Traffic – and the effect of all the many new homes, all of which have cars?

WORK, BUSINESS, SHOPPING: Are you happy with the amount of work here? Do you feel there are prospects? Do you find using the Town Centre shops and services easy? Should we pay to park? Should we have the first two hours free?

CARE AND PROVISION FOR THE ELDERLY: Are you concerned about the future of suitable affordable homes for the elderly? Do you feel that the elderly have enough care or facilities? Are they being listened to?

YOUTH PROVISION AND EDUCATION: Are you happy that we have not had a youth club building since 2011? Do you feel that the youth of the area have enough? Are you happy with their educational prospects?

POLICING: Are you happy with the level of policing we now have? Are you happy with the crime rates? Now – please don’t misunderstand me! We live in a great town and our people are hardworking and friendly. I am very proud of Tetbury - and it is the people that make our town. But if you had a reason to say NO to any the questions above, then you probably agree it is time to change for the better. It’s time to Vote YES.

Promoted by Kevin Painter on behalf of Kevin Painter of 10 Bartley Croft, Tetbury, GL8 8ER

A good number of these things, obviously, the council does not control. However, if you have a proactive council and councillors, they can lobby on your behalf. Whether it be lobbying or even courting new businesses to come to our town. Do you believe - as we believe - that our town deserves the same consideration and the same resources that many of our neighbouring towns have? With the many new people and families that will be moving into our town, surely we should have the same as our neighbours? Better parking, better roads, better infrastructure, better healthcare facilities and better leisure (including a swimming pool!?) Many older Tetburians and longer-term residents will remember when our town had a sixth form, a swimming pool, a hospital with beds, a police station, banks, a newsagent, several petrol stations, two surgeries, a street cleaner and free parking! I was fortunate enough to live through what many are now calling that “Golden Age” - but what really mystifies so many is why do we pay much more council tax now, for fewer resources? This is why ‘True to Tetbury’ was formed: to give support to independent prospective councillors who want to make a difference - and who will be working from the grassroots level of the Town and District Councils. Many of us are dismayed by the farcical situation which seems to prevail because of party politics. It’s bad enough when it is just one tail wagging the dog… Being independent, our only responsibility is to you – so we are hoping that you will come out and vote and make a difference. Vote with common sense, vote with your conscience – and vote for a positive change. Above all, vote for the person you feel will listen to you and represent you and who will stand up for not just for what you need, but what we all need. Please remember this is not a party - this is how it should be - the people’s “free vote.” A paid-for

Tetbury Camera Club Even the smallest of today’s cameras, as well as smart phones, are crammed full of technology and computing power. It’s there to make mastering picture-taking as simple, or as creative, as you could wish. Cameras like the one in our picture are a miracle of modern science and technology, and to prove it some keen photographers are even making award-winning movie films using smart phones and pocket cameras. In the 1950’s most cameras had a fixed lens, so you just had to learn how to hold it still, focus it, (if it had the sophistication of adjustment,) and most likely you’d then have just one button to push. Fancy being a bit more artistic? Then remembering how to work out setting the aperture and shutter speed to expose the right amount of light on the film inside would produce an image that would either please or disappoint you.

One of the problems was that you wouldn’t know which, until you eventually filled the film with images and took it off to Boots, or another local developer or camera shop.

Back in those days, David Bailey and Terence Donovan developed a pictorial technique that was ‘grittier’ and more realistic than the norm - and they had enough creative confidence to become what nowadays would be called ‘disrupters’ – innovators who had a different and distinctive photographic style. They made enough of a mark to open doors that had previously been reserved for a different type of artist, generally ones who spoke with a more refined accent and dressed in a more traditional way. The equivalent of Carnaby Street compared to Savile Row. Sadly, Terence Donovan is no longer with us, but you’ll find some of his muchadmired fashion and portrait photography on the internet if you Google his name. David Bailey is still very much around – and has even been known to leave his studio with a small pocket camera of the type seen in the illustration with this article.

It’s going to be a busy and challenging time for shops and businesses in Tetbury, so the need for a Chamber of Commerce as a business support group is even more important. Following on from our Open Days, it’s been pleasing to get the support of many local businesses. It would be true to say that the Chamber has recently been operating a ‘skeleton team,’ and in the past even suspending its’ subscriptions, so it was decided to get a few projects running and then to hold an AGM later, with the aim of getting more people involved.

Firstly, I should like to thank Sally Walker and Carra Bacon, who at very short notice helped to enhance the Christmas Light Switch-On event. Sally and Carra are now working on bringing the Food Festival back to Tetbury - and a provisional date of the 31st of August has been set, with events to run from the Thursday night until Sunday. Having been to a few of their functions, I am sure this will be a major success for the town; if you would like to find out more or to get involved, please contact Sally direct on 07788 273499. The ‘Tetbury Guide’ is also soon to make a welcome return. It’s being compiled right now and will then be distributed through many varied outlets externally to Tetbury, as an ideal showcase to bring new people

Tetbury Chamber of Commerce into our town. It will spread ‘The Tetbury Experience,’ and publicise the uniqueness of our shops and businesses. Please note, there will be several variations of how the guide will look, before the final version is agreed. As I mentioned, the Christmas Lights Switch-On was enhanced by more businesses getting involved, and this year the Town Council have handed the event over to the Chamber of Commerce, so now the Christmas event will be an ideal opportunity for shops and businesses to not only showcase what they have, but to also have a longer switch-on, and some Christmas-themed promotional late-night shopping events. If you would like to be involved please contact me, as we will be holding the first meeting to discuss these ideas with other key stakeholders soon. It has also been suggested that the Chamber should be more proactive in assisting businesses to get the maximum help available for what is now a very costly exercise. Again, your suggestions would be appreciated. Lastly, although in a similar vein, many people have suggested that the Chamber should be proactive in courting and attracting businesses that will complement and enhance our town. It’s been mooted that if Tetbury is such a popular town, why has no major business been attracted to it?

The Feoffees and the Thirteen Spring is underway and with our gardens and allotments bursting into life, we look forward to the lighter evenings and the chance to enjoy the great outdoors. If you are walking or running or just enjoying a visit to Preston Park and the old Railway line, do take the opportunity to use the new ‘Trim Trail.’ This Trail is free to use and has twenty stations – ten for exercises and ten for stretching - between Wiltshire Bridge and along the Railway line. We must thank Gloucestershire County Council and Councillor Hirst in particular, for helping to access money for this project from the ‘Growing our Community’ fund. Tetbury Town Council, The Goods Shed Trust and Mr Geoff Turbott should also be thanked for bringing this project to fruition.

commanding the 3rd Army Division, he prepared its tactical withdrawal from Dunkirk, with few casualties. Gerry detailed key features of the decisive victories of the 8th Army under Montgomery’s command over German forces at El Alamein in 1942/3. Passionate about good training and leadership, he always sent moraleboosting personal messages to his troops.

‘The Marmite General.’ Like the yeast extract, loved by some and hated by others, Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery (1887-1976) had the unhappy knack of upsetting people by speaking his mind! Gerry Churchard summarised Montgomery’s life and career for us, in his well-paced illustrated talk on the 21st of February. The son of an Anglican minister and a disciplinarian mother, Montgomery was severely injured in the First World War, then served in the UK, Ireland, India and Palestine. Early in the Second World War,

The invasion of Sicily and mainland Italy followed, not without disagreements with his fellow American generals. Recalled to the UK to plan ‘Operation Overlord,’ launched in June 1944, Montgomery became Supreme Commander of all Allied ground forces. Although ‘Operation Market Garden’ at Arnhem failed, he enabled a major enemy attack in the Battle of the Bulge to be repelled. After accepting the surrender of all German armed forces on the 4th of May 1945, he commanded the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR). Now Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, his controversial views on historical and political matters continued. But, as Gerry told his attentive audience, few could deny he was a great inspirational army commander. What was heralded as a light-hearted talk about statistics proved to be a fascinating talk by Alison Hesketh on the 7th of March, about the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and how it gathers information. The ONS, a non-ministerial government department, collects and publishes statistical data relating to the UK economy, population

Probus and society. This, together with information from other sources enables the government to assess resource priorities and aids the formulation of economic and social policies such as the introduction of fuel allowances and bus passes for the elderly. Alison explained how she and six others work within Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties. Interviewers are selected depending on their background and experience. Letters are sent to a representative cross-section of residences asking their occupants to confirm their willingness to take part in a survey. She described many of the unforeseen, intriguing and sometimes threatening situations she had encountered in visiting thirty respondents a month, who ranged from titled land owners and celebrities to travellers. Examples of the questions she might be required to ask were quoted; deciding whether the interviewees were competent to answer them - or merely creating dubious statistics - was not always easy! Everything was explained clearly to us and Alison also kept us all amused. Looking ahead, we’ll be told about the history of the Castle Combe Racing Circuit on the 4th of April. Whether or not British Leyland was doomed from the outset will be reviewed on the 18th of April, and Bonsai trees studied on the 2nd of May. Theo Stening, , Probus, 01666 504243

Cotswold Voluntary Wardens Building a Bigger Bridge It was a big job for the Cotswold Wardens work party in February, when we built a bridge over a stream at Horsley. We have assembled similar components and installed many footbridges to the ‘standard design’ for footpaths, but for this one, the County Council had agreed that it should be wider. One-and-a-half metres wide, in fact. This was to allow access for mowers and quad bikes, because the footpath is now the access to a field acquired by Horsley Parish Council, for use as a village recreational amenity. So, more wood supplied and a bigger job than usual, but successfully accomplished.

Dry Stone Walling near Tetbury

At the request of the Dursley estate, who supplied the stone, we returned to extend the wall alongside the bridleway not far from the Trouble House. We re-laid the foundation and started the wall rebuild – and will return when time allows. In previous years, lengths have been built as both walling competitions and teaching courses, with the Wardens joining in and completing sections as necessary.

Local Walks in April Local circular walks lead by the Wardens in April are:

Friday the 5th of April at 10.00 am from Coaley Village Hall car park for 7 miles via Silver Street, Coaley Peak and Cotswold Way. Bring a packed lunch for a break at Coaley Peak viewpoint.

Thursday the 1th of April at 10.00 am from Coaley Peak car park on the B4066 for 6 miles via Uley Bury, Uley Church and Owlpen.

Monday the 5th of April at 10.00 am

from the Tunnel House near Coates for 5 miles via Tarlton and Rodmarton.

Thursday the 25th of April at 10.00 am from the Fleece Inn, Hillesley, for 5 miles via Kilcott and Alderley. Walks held every Tuesday by the Tetbury Footpaths Group resume in mid-April for the summer, right through to October – and they hold a Walking Festival after Easter, Friday the 26th through to Monday the 28th of April. Chelworth Bookworms Friends of Tetbury Hospital

The annual quiz and film nights, organised by Ann Walsh of the Friends of Tetbury Hospital committee, were a great success. The quiz night was fully booked, and after taxing the grey matter the quizzers enjoyed a delicious fish and chips supper. Thanks go to Caroline Baker, Quiz Mistress, The United Services Club for providing the venue, and Tetbury Fish and Chips for the delicious fish and chips! The evening raised over £500 for Tetbury Hospital Trust.

“The Tattooist of Auschwitz” by Heather Morris Lale sees Gita for the first time and is smitten. Despite the difficulties put in their way, they fall in love and make plans for their future. But this is no run-of-the-mill ‘Boy Meets Girl’ love story, because the place where they meet is Birkenau, the labour camp attached to Auschwitz. Due to his privileged position as Tattooist, Lale is spared the worst of conditions and can help his fellow prisoners by smuggling in extra food. For two years Lale and Gita live for their fleeting meetings, doing whatever is necessary to survive. Then, suddenly, as news of the Russians’ approach filters through, the camp is emptied, and the lovers are separated. Will they ever see each other again? With only short glimpses of the true horror surrounding them, at times you feel that Lale must have nine lives as he always manages to survive against the odds. Indeed, it sometimes feels unrealistic for them both to survive – but this is a true story. Not only do both Lale and Gita survive, but in the epilogue, we learn that Lale continues to use up his nine lives as he negotiates life behind the Iron Curtain after the war. Having endured further imprisonment, he finally manages to emigrate to Australia, where as an old man he relates his story to the author.

‘Swimming with Men,’ an endearing film about friendship and self-worth, was the chosen film for our film night. It was a successful evening and thanks go to Tetbury Goods Shed and The Tetbury Film Society. We will report on the final figure raised next month. Thank you to all who supported us; we hope you had a good time and will join us again next year!

taking place in the last eighteen months, proving very popular with our patients. The most significant of these is the ‘Personal List’ system, successfully trialled in Cirencester, which the partners believe is the best way to provide the most consistent continuity of care. This has also been what patients said, in the feedback received through our ‘Friends and Family Test.’ The test shows that patients overwhelmingly agree they’d recommend Phoenix Tetbury and have left us very complimentary comments about our doctors, nurses and reception staff. We also compare favourably to neighbouring practices in the National GP Survey, with improving results in the latest one. This year’s survey by Ipsos MORI on behalf of NHS England is currently being sent out to over two million people. If you receive one, please complete and return it so that your views will be heard. We’ve recently restructured staff arrangements in Tetbury and there are some new appointments, including my own as Practice Manager. I’m very much looking forward to getting to know more of our patients - and one of the ways I will be doing so is through our Patient Participation Group (PPG). The purpose of a PPG is to allow patients and staff the opportunity to make positive suggestions - and to provide ‘a patient’s perspective.’ It’s a forum where information about what’s happening in a practice can be shared and discussed by a group of people representative of the demographics of the whole practice. Quarterly meetings are held at the surgery; details are available on our website and the PPG notice board in the waiting room. We’d like to encourage a diverse membership of this group, including young people, people with young families and carers, so please contact me or ask at reception if you would like to join. We hope soon to be able to bring you further news on the new surgery building, as negotiations continue to secure the land. Judy Sharp, Practice Manager

Avening Primary School We are curious, at Avening School! As we head swiftly towards the Easter holidays, it is with pride and satisfaction that we can reflect on the spring term which has been packed full of trips, visitors, sports tournaments and celebration. World Book Day was a roaring success with the school being transformed overnight into the Indian jungle. As children entered through the gates on Monday morning, they walked underneath vines and greenery to jungle sounds being played through an amplifier in the playground. We had tigers, panthers, jungle girls and boys, elephants, bears, snakes, monkeys and a crocodile congregate in the hall for morning assembly, where children were introduced to the story of ‘The Jungle Book’ and then sorted into their houses ready for a day of activities. Throughout the day, each house enjoyed a session outside in the school garden

creating jungle themed craft and listening to The Jungle Book being read to them as they toasted marshmallows over the campfire and drank jungle juice. There was also a dance and movement session in the hall; a singing session; and an art class

where the children all contributed in their houses to a gigantic jungle collage. At the end of the day, the whole school performed a dance routine in front of parents and family. It was a very special day! A week later, the Hawks(y3/4) headed over the River Severn to South Wales to visit the Roman museum, amphitheatre and baths in Caerleon. Not only did the children get to visualise and explore the baths and barracks, they also took part in a lesson at Roman school in costume. Our Avening netball players competed at a High5 netball tournament against other local schools at Kingshill in Cirencester. At the beginning of April, a group of swimmers from the school will take part in the annual small schools swimming gala in Cirencester. We have plenty still to look forward to before the end of term with the Kestrels class (y1/2) journeying to ‘We the Curious/@ Bristol’ for a day of experiments and discovery; a dance festival at SWR; a special Easter assembly followed by the annual school Easter egg hunt and Avening school talent show on the last day of term. For further information about this busy place of learning please see our school website: www.avening.gloucs.sch.uk Happy Easter and see you in the summer term! 150208Primary MathsSchool & English Avening

As this issue is being delivered, we hope the weather is warm and sunny, as thirty seven of us are at PGL near Swindon enjoying an outdoor adventure. We were able to offer this weekend at a greatly reduced cost thanks to the grant from the Tesco Blue Token scheme, so thank you to everyone who gave us their tokens last year. Rainbows enjoyed an evening experiencing what moving on to Brownies might be like - organised by their Young Leader. This was one of the last things Freya had to complete, to gain her Young Leader qualification. The Rainbows also enjoyed two meetings outside: one playing team games and one in the forest school.

Brownies have had several new girls join them and they have learnt about the Brownie story, making their own Brownie ponds. (‘Twist me and turn me and show me the Elf, I looked in the water and there saw _____.’ How many of you can remember that last word?*) The new baking badge is proving very popular and several have been given out already. Guides continue to work on ‘Skills Builder’ badges - and our last group of BP girls are well on their way to completing their award. They have been making posters, and enjoyed a meditation and mindfulness evening. We held a District Leaders meeting last month and discussed ideas to celebrate our centenary in 2020. We will start our celebrations with a ‘District Thinking Day’ event next February. There was enthusiasm from all units about holding a weekend residential at our HQ in Cowley - and a

Girlguiding weekend has now been booked. A town treasure trail, craft show, disco or ball and a ‘Decades’ challenge are all ideas to be further explored. I know some leaders are already drawing up plans for the inevitable celebration badge! We were honoured to have been given half of the proceeds from the retiring collection after the service of Thanksgiving for Trish Dent. We will ensure that every member benefits from the generosity of those who attended, and we are investigating the best way to spend it. Trish was our past President and had been a leader for many years. She was also a member of Ingleburn Trefoil Guild, which is the adult section of guiding and open to anyone aged 18-plus. They meet once a month and often have speakers or go on outings. They are holding their AGM on Monday the 15th of April from 7.30 pm in the hall at St Mary’s Primary School, so if you would like to find out more about what they do, please consider going along. The fourteen core walkers have raised their target of £100,00 for Syrian Refugees. Yes, not only did they walk the 100-mile birthday challenge in January, ringing the bells at churches en route, but they have since reached their £100,000 target for refugees - and money is still coming in! A big, big “Thank you!” to everyone for your generous support - and of course to the walkers who did it.

Can’t resist taking photos of our lovely town? A snowy Market House? Summer in full bloom? The Christmas illuminations? Or maybe it’s the architectural gems or the quirky events such as Wacky Races or Woolsack Day? We would love to see what pictures you think sum up Tetbury. Enter our FREE competition for both children and adults with your favourite photo (or photos) and be in with a chance to win:

Celia and Heather then entertained us with tales of the early years, which included reminiscences of the first meetings in the headmistress’s office at the school - and a very rainy trip to Weston-Super-Mare! Those of us who are relatively new to the Tetbury Institute felt as though we were part of a long and happy heritage. This was the first of several events planned by our Institute in celebration of this special year, with a Gala evening planned for the autumn.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tetbury Evening WI… …and we started celebrations with a very special champagne afternoon tea in the Orchard Rooms at Highgrove House. Nearly ninety of our members enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with two of our founding ladies, Celia and Heather, cutting the celebration cake which was made and decorated by Linda.

At our monthly meeting, Helen Price gave us an inspiring insight into her time on “the Inside.” Helen retired early from her teaching career to retrain as a specialist in Dyslexia teaching and she then worked as a volunteer in Bristol Prison, helping inmates suffering from Dyslexia to improve their situation and better prepare for life on “the outside.” Often, these young men had come from hostile environments and many also suffered from low self-esteem. Each benefited from the one-to-one teaching that Helen provided. Her engaging talk was followed by a lively question and answer session. With winter nearly behind us now there are several events planned for the coming months. The lunch/supper club has plans for gatherings at both Restaurant No 65 and the Trouble House. These events are organised so that smaller groups come together, and fellow members can get to know each other better - perhaps making lifelong friends. Jan has also been busy

Tetbury WI elsewhere, with plans for trips to Stratford upon Avon and the SS Great Britain already well underway. There will be no coffee mornings at the Snooty Fox for the next two months, April and May, as the regular dates fall on Bank Holidays, we will resume coffee dates again in June. Our next meeting will take place on Monday April the 8th at 7.30 pm at The Goods Shed, where we will hear from Peter

McNeile with his “Tales from the Turf.” Our Institute includes ladies both from Tetbury and the surrounding villages, and we are always glad to welcome new members. Jennifer Walsh, Tetbury WI

Dolphins Hall Green Angels Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Service

March was a month for getting lots done.

We only use natural, non-toxic products and methods

For the new build project, we have been going back and forth with architects ironing out issues highlighted in the various reviews of the initial hall plans. We have also commissioned companies to undertake required tree and topographical surveys. It is likely that sometime during April we will be holding another consultation day, to look at the next revision of the new build plans. We don’t have a date yet so please keep an eye on our website or Facebook page for details. There is still an awful lot to do before we will be ready to start the process of pre-planning, but we are making good progress. On the Memorial Recreation Ground, two substantial new picnic benches have arrived and will soon be put in place. Some essential playground maintenance is also being organised, and we also think we have managed to obtain some funding for a new piece of equipment for the playground.

Although the hall is scheduled to be replaced, keeping it in great shape for all its users is very important to us. At this time, we are looking for a new caretaker/cleaner for the hall. If this is a role you might be interested in, then please do get in touch. It is quite a challenging role that requires a little flexibility with times and availability. On the subject of “seeking people,” another area we are looking for help in is a minutes secretary. This is someone who can attend a monthly meeting - usually, the third Tuesday of the month, take minutes and then prepare and distribute the minutes after the meeting. If this is a way you could help us, then please do get in touch.

As I seem to have turned this month’s column into a recruitment drive, I might as well go all the way and talk about trustees. As I mentioned last month, we are coming up on the time of year when we will be holding our AGM, where we will be voting for and appointing six resident trustees. The success of the hall relies on having good trustees. Please do consider if this is a way you could support your local community facility. The AGM will be in early May. The exact date will be in next month’s column and once again on the website and Facebook page. Tetbury Scout Group This month we were pleased to welcome ten new members… …into the forty-million-strong membership of the World Scouting family. The District Commissioner joined us to invest six members into our Beaver lodge, three members into the Cub Pack and to welcome Bruce as an Assistant Beaver Leader, having completed his initial leader training. The investiture ceremony is an important ceremony across Scouting and helps young people and adults understand the commitment they are making, when they make the scout promise and become a member of the movement. During last month the Scouts had the opportunity to learn circus skills, build bridges, cook a vegetable curry, work toward their navigator badge, take part in a District swimming event and build a Ballista. Tetbury and District Footpath Group April’s here – and we’re at the start of a new season of walks for the Footpath Group. The first walk for the 2019 season is on Tuesday the 2nd of April and is a fairly gentle one, to start us off. This, and the other walks arranged for April, are detailed below. We welcome new members and visitors to join us; for all walks we meet at the free car-park at the Goods Shed. Some walks start directly from there and for others we use cars to get to the start/finish location. Visitors may just turn up at the start but if possible, please contact the leader in advance. The leaders contact information is shown in the walk details. Walkers are not insured against personal injury or incapacity by the group - everyone is

responsible for their own safety and ability to complete the walks.

News from St Michael’s

Good Friday; 3.00 pm: The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion recalling His crucifixion.

As they say time goes faster as one gets older; I can’t believe that we are in Spring! Easter is later this year and we are preparing our services for Holy Week - the Easter Triduum is a wonderful experience, recalling the Lord’s Last Supper, his crucifixion and rising from the dead on Easter Sunday.

Easter Sunday; 9.00 am: Mass of Easter Day It is not just at Easter that you are welcome to attend Mass with us; on any Sunday you will be most welcome. The church may also be open on Wednesday and Friday, if I am in the office. You are welcome to come in

We start with Palm Sunday when we recall Jesus’s journey into Jerusalem when palms were waved. On Wednesday of Holy Week (which has been known as ‘Spy Wednesday’) some parishioners, with Fr Isidore, will join priests and parishioners from throughout the Clifton Diocese for the Celebration of the Chrism Mass in Clifton Cathedral. Bishop Declan will Bless the Oils of Catechumens, Chrism and the Sick to be used in each parish throughout the year. It is a wonderful experience to be part of Diocesan event. I have been going for many years (although not every year,) and naturally although the format of the Mass and readings do not change, some things do.

a pray for a while, no matter how long or short. No-one will know except God - and He understands. May I take this opportunity on behalf of our Parish Priest Fr Isidore Obi and the Parishioners of St Michael’s, to wish you all God’s Blessing this Easter? Maundy Thursday we recall the washing of the feet of the disciples before the celebration of the Last Supper when Jesus offered up His Body and Blood. After Mass has ended, we sit or kneel in prayer for an hour before the Blessed Sacrament, which is exposed in a Monstrance. The quietness in prayer is something wonderful - there is nothing like the stillness of a Church. Normally, at the end of the working day, I sit in the church on my own in the peace and quiet. The Passion of Good Friday we recall the Crucifixion, when Jesus died on the cross to save us. The Mass is not celebrated today but those present may receive Holy Communion that has been held in reposition. On Easter Sunday we celebrate Jesus’s Resurrection - and the Mass should be celebrated with great solemnity; we recall our own baptism by renewing our baptismal promises. Children look forward to receiving their Easter Eggs! As I child I remember feeling quite grand wearing a new dress and hat on Easter Sunday, to church. I am not so sure about that when I see the photographs! Easter is a time for new life, renewal and thoughts about which direction our life is going in. If you are new to Tetbury, visiting the town or family and friends, or if you’ve just been away from church for a while, you are very welcome to join us for our Easter Sunday morning Mass at 9.00 am.

Our other Holy Week Services are: Palm Sunday; 9.00 distribution of Palms

History of Tetbury Society The Tetbury Advertiser in its current form was first published in October 1974. That’s when the Lions Club issued a small black and white ‘Advertiser,’ - but Jane Haines told HOTS on the 7th of March that the title had existed previously. She gave us a general survey how news has been printed since the seventeenth century but told us that the first newspaper in Tetbury was the ‘County Oracle and Political Intelligencer’ printed by J. Wilton in 1797. From 1803, John Gale Goodwyn and his son had a business in Long Street next to ‘The Ormond,’ as a ‘Printer, Bookseller & Stationer’ - but that they did not print a news sheet. It was not until 1864 that Isaac Cooley published the ‘Tetbury Journal & General Advertiser’- priced at 1½d. Only the front page carried local news - the rest was national news and advertisements. A peculiar entry read: “Extraordinary - Having seen in your “Journal” the birth of a child named Cleaver, I find it has still living in this town, a father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandfather and great great grandmother. This early version of the ‘Advertiser’ ceased publication in 1865 ‘because it occupies too much of our time and it has not been appreciated by the public.’ There was another short-lived publication by the Liberal Party called the ‘Tetbury Star of Freedom’ priced at ½d. In 1879 Thomas Hill took over Goodwyn’s business and began the publication of ‘The Tetbury Advertiser.’ Tetbury local news was on page two, then District News and Births, Marriages and Deaths. Later, he introduced the ‘Looker On’ and ‘Owlpen’ columns, in which he gave his pointed opinions on local incidents and people. A particular target was the evangelical vicar Thomas George Horwood who was of High Church persuasion and who antagonised Thomas

Hill. He published the Vestry meeting verbatim, and:

“Can anybody tell me what has become of the Vicar of Tetbury? I am about the town a great deal, but I never come across him by any chance, nor can I find anybody who sees him. Surely this is a season when good shepherds should visit their flocks. But perhaps he is preparing for the end – which he says is soon to come.”

Horwood went to his solicitors about some of the published comments and Hill had to ‘frankly and fully retract all imputations upon the character or work of the Vicar and apologise to him for their publication.’ HOTS has an incomplete collection of this publication that it often puts on show when we have an exhibition in the Market House. All editions carry advertisements of local business, often with wording which we find colourful, today. Jane started our meeting by dealing with the AGM which accepted the reports and accounts for last year. We reappointed the officers and committee and welcomed Kathleen Wells back onto the committee. Our next meeting is at 7.30 pm on the 4th of April in Christ Church, when Dr John Paddock will speak about ‘The Civil War in the Cotswolds.’ Alan Twelvetree, The History of Tetbury Society

And this month – at the heart of our worship – is the journey through Holy Week to Easter. This begins on Palm Sunday (the 14th of April) at 10.00 am, when we meet in the Market Place to re-enact the procession as Jesus entered Jerusalem. Processing to the church, then we prepare for the week to come by listening to the dramatic Gospel account of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion.

Each evening through the next week, our 7.00 pm services go to different churches in the Benefice, providing times of quiet reflection and prayer. Thursday the 18th of April is Maundy Thursday, when we remember the Last Supper at a special service at 7.00 pm at St Marys’, Tetbury. Then on Good Friday, we follow Jesus’ journey to his death and burial. We join the Churches in the Tetbury Area for the Procession of Witness at 11.00 am, starting at St Mary’s Primary School, followed by our Good Friday service in St Marys’ at 2.00 pm. Finally, at St John the Baptist in Shipton Moyne that evening (7.00 pm), we share in a short and moving service to mark the burial of Jesus.

An outline design was lightly marked on the paper before the sky was washed in, then distant buildings were blocked in while the sky was still damp, so that their edges were softened. After adding foreground buildings and a roadway, Brian used a knife to remove paint from buildings to just suggest details such as doors and windows – an illusion giving the viewer a chance to use their imagination. From there, he continued adding details, such as figures and shadows. Not content with just one picture, Brian dashed off three landscapes and a seascape, each as a fifteen minute exercise. There was a lot to learn from his very informative visit.

On Wednesday the 6th of March we kicked off our 2019 programme… …with a visit by local artist Brian Smith, who gave a demonstration in watercolour. News from Christ Church Lent is a time to learn to travel Light, to clear the clutter From our crowded lives, and Find a space, a desert. Deserts are bleak: no creature Comforts, only a vast expanse of Stillness, sharpening awareness of Ourselves and God. So writes Ann Lewin in her poem, simply entitled ‘Lent.’ It is quite a scary thing to do to dare to face the ‘vast expanse of stillness,’ and most of us, most of the time, tend to fill days ‘being busy.’ It’s scary because we might discover there is nothing there, or we might

be confronted with aspects of ourselves about which we would rather remain unaware – or perhaps because, just possibly, we might glimpse a deeper Presence. At Christ Church we are sorry to be holding the two funerals of people who have in earlier days been very involved in the life of our church. We celebrated Lewis Smith’s life recently and, at time of writing, we are shortly to hold a service to remember the life of Bill West. It is moving to hear someone’s life story from the mouths of those who have loved them, and together in worship, to offer them in thanksgiving back to God.

along Jesus’ journey from Palm Sunday through Maundy Thursday - and Good Friday to Easter Sunday. If you have time, pop in and see what it’s all about. We hope that through it we too will sharpen our ‘awareness of ourselves and God.’ With best wishes, Noel Sharp, Minister of Christ Church

In the week before Easter, Christ Church will be open for people to come and take part in a ‘Holy Week Journey.’ We will have places to reflect and pray that take you

classical music and musical theatre but has developed a love for watching and singing opera. She one day hopes to sing the role of Mimi, in Puccini’s ‘La bohème.’

2018 was a productive year for the choir, with successful concerts and the chance to both learn new songs and welcome new members. Regrettably, we also had to bid a sad farewell to some members due to re-location or ill-health. And as readers will probably already know, the news that our MD, Richard George, was leaving us at Easter necessitated a search for a new MD. We’ve been fortunate to have several talented applicants, and we’re very pleased to announce the appointment of Nicola Atwell to be our new Musical Director. Nicki teaches music at Westonbirt School and at interview we were struck by her lively dynamism and her great commitment to working with a community choir. She is young and go-ahead and has great vision for the future, so we are all delighted to welcome her, starting at the beginning of the summer term. Over the last three years Richard has developed the choir to its present high standard and has also increased the membership substantially, so we bid him a big ‘Thank You!’ He’s left Nicki with a good base to build upon. At present we are working toward our concert at the Goods Shed on April the 10th

If you wish to come along to see what we are about, do come and join us at our first rehearsal of the Summer term on Monday 29th April at Christ Church at 7.00 pm. For more information please visit our website www.tetburycommunitychoir.co.uk. John Saynor, Choir Member, Tetbury Community Choir

She’s has been a member of Gloucestershire Youth Choir and has performed at Cheltenham Town Hall, Tewkesbury Abbey, Birmingham Symphony Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall. She has also sung in concert with Italian Tenor Luca Ercoles, and with Soprano Patricia Hammond. Lissy loves to sing light

Renishaw visit:

Our Social Spaces are taking shape! Plans have been drawn up for the canteen, outdoor seating and inner courtyard areas, which will be inclusive and accessible to enable the school to improve its support for all pupils and particularly for those with additional physical, social, emotional or mental health needs. We will create three sustainable and environmentally friendly spaces, connecting a light and airy refectory to a multi-purpose outdoor space. At the centre of the school will be a spiritual garden, offering students an oasis of calm. We will link the innovative new Horticultural

area, with its wonderful home-grown produce, to the outside area through the creation of a tree-lined green pathway for all to enjoy. Improving flow and giving pupils more space to relax and enjoy healthy food will support and improve their physical and mental health, which can only help their learning. This ambitious undertaking aims to develop the outside and dining areas of the school to embrace and reflect the vibrancy, creativity and inclusivity for which the school is renowned. A team of committed, energetic and passionate parents and staff are now fully supporting both projects, using their expertise in fundraising, communications, and architecture and leading the design aspects of both projects.

Last month, students from years 9 and 10 visited Renishaw HQ in Wootton-underEdge. Students enjoyed a tour of the ‘Innovation Centre’ and saw first-hand how and what Renishaw design and manufacture. The highlight of the day was the ‘Technology Teardown’ activity. This was an exciting opportunity for students to break out the screwdrivers and discover how everyday gadgets such as computers, mobile phones and printers are assembled and begin to think about how they work. Dr Pullin and Mr Hutchinson would both like to thank Renishaw for providing students with a fantastic STEM experience. Our students certainly appreciated the opportunity: ‘For me, this most interesting part of the day was the ‘Technology Teardown’ as I enjoyed exploring the mechanisms inside.’ (Y10 female student) ‘I enjoyed the trip so much, it was a real eyeopener for me. Taking apart the computers was probably the best part - just seeing what was inside and finding out how much effort it took someone to make.’ (Y9 female student)

St Mary’s CE VA Primary School ‘Dressing-up days’ in primary schools… …tend to divide opinion - and last month we had two dressing-up days in the space of a fortnight! Children love them, but teachers and parents often groan, when they wake up on the morning of a dressingup day… This year we had a fairy tale theme for ‘World Book Day’ - and everyone came dressed as Princes, Kings, Princesses, Little Pigs, Big Bad Wolves, Grannies, Witches, Woodcutters, Snow White’s, Red Riding Hood’s and ‘Hansel’ - among other things! World Book Day is all about celebrating books and reminding ourselves about how much enjoyment we can get from a book, so lots of time is spent sharing books, talking about books and just reading for

pleasure. Children of different ages got together to share their favourite stories, and we had a visiting Book Fair so children could buy a book at the end of the day, with their parents.

The second dressing-up day was Red Nose Day and the children and staff came dressed in red to raise money for Comic Relief. This year our fundraising was quite low-key, but we spent some time exploring injustice and inequality and how we can address issues of disadvantage and deprivation through our actions.

Our Year 3 children had a fabulous trip to Clearwell Caves in March. Children, staff and parents were kitted out with lamps and helmets and they explored the depths of Clearwell learning about rock formation and what it would have been like to be a miner in the past. Children developed huge resilience and team work as they crawled through tunnels and explored the caves and they had a very exciting experience when all the lights were turned out to sense what pitch black is really like! A very memorable day out for everyone. Mrs Jo Woolley, Headteacher

TICK, TICK, TICK… With winter behind us, and the weather warming, ticks become more of an issue for us and our pets. Here is all you need to know to keep your pets protected.

Ehrlichia: This is a bacterial infection of the white blood cells. In dogs the signs include fever, reduced appetite, weight loss, stiffness and prolonged bleeding. This is rare in the UK and is most commonly seen in pets that have travelled abroad; however, we are increasingly seeing it in animals with no history of travelling. Babesia: This is a tick-borne disease that infects the red blood cells. Clinical signs include loss of appetite, fever, anaemia, weakness and brown discoloured urine. It is rare in the UK but like Ehrlichia, can be seen in pets that have travelled abroad – in particular Europe, Africa and Asia. In rare cases we can see outbreaks in pets with no travel history.

HOW DO I REMOVE A TICK?

WHAT ARE TICKS?

Ticks are small, eight-legged creepy crawlies with a round white-ish body and are commonly found in grassland and woodland, but can also be seen in your garden if you live in an area with lots of wildlife. They are most active between March and October and are most commonly seen in warm wet weather. Sitting at the top of grass stalks, ticks wait for you or your pet to brush past, then jump on and attach themselves. They bite and then feed on blood almost tripling in size; once they are full they will then drop off.

WHY ARE TICKS AN ISSUE?

Ticks have very sharp mouthparts that can cause inflammation around the area of the bite. They can also act as ‘vectors’ which means they can carry microorganisms and spread disease between animals and humans when they feed. In the UK these include Lymes disease, Ehrlichia and Babesia. Lymes Disease: This is an inflammatory disease caused by a bacteria found in their saliva. The clinical signs in your pet manifest as a distinctive bulls-eye circular rash around the area of the bite, lameness and fever. In humans the symptoms are extreme tiredness, muscle pain and weakness, joint pain, headaches and the bull eyes rash. However it is important to know that you won’t always see a rash.

To reduce the risk of infection it is best to remove the tick as soon as possible. It is important that you remove the entire tick including its mouthparts as otherwise, if this is left behind, it can cause inflammation and infection. You must also remove it without squeezing the tick’s body. The best way to do this is by using a tick hook as it safely and effectively removes the tick every time and is easy to use – these can be purchased from any of our branches. Simply slide the hook around the tick, keeping it level with the skin, and gentle twist anti-clockwise. Once loose, pull the hook away and dispose of the tick by flushing it down the toilet. Avoid methods of removal such as burning or covering in Vaseline or alcohol as this stresses the tick and can cause it to regurgitate its meal back into the host – increasing risk of infection.

HOW DO I PREVENT TICKS?

There are many products on the market such as spot-ons and tablets that diffuse the anti-parasitic treatment into the fatty layer of your pet’s skin and will cause the tick to detach itself but the tick will still have to bite for this to be effective. If your pet is particularly prone to ticks there are also anti-parasitic products available that both repel and kill ticks – it’s worth discussing this option with your vet. Keep up to date with any flea and tick treatment and this is essential if you are travelling with your pet as tick-borne diseases are often more common in other countries. If you have any questions please feel free to pop into one of our local branches and one of our team will be happy to advise you further.

The DO’s and DON’Ts of TICK REMOVAL *DO* Remove a tick as soon as you notice it *DO* Remove gently, ensuring to remove the mouthparts *DO* Contact us if you’re worried – we can demonstrate how to remove a tick *DO* Keep your pet’s flea and tick treatment up to date

*DON’T* Use Vaseline to deprive tick of oxygen *DON’T* Burn it or put alcohol on it *DON’T* Squeeze the ticks body while removing it *DON’T* Try and remove anything if unsure about whether or not it’s actually a tick

Tetbury in Bloom While working in St Marys’ churchyard last month, it suddenly struck me that it is exactly ten years ago that we started our project to improve its appearance - and over that time, we’ve spent literally hundreds of man-hours doing our best to make it looked loved and cared-for. At this time of year thousands of self-seeded primroses come into flower growing amongst the grass, and they look absolutely beautiful. Very early in the project we extended this naturally-occurring spring display by adding hundreds of snow drops and cyclamen under several of the trees, and clumps of daffodils and bluebells in amongst the gravestones. The six formal beds that we created alongside the main paths add to the overall spring display from February onward, with a mixture of crocus and daffodils. This month the tulips start coming into flower, in colours chosen to complement the red-leafed trees and the stonework of the church itself.

Other beds and planted areas have been created using either formal or informal schemes. Among them is the semievergreen woodland-style fern bed at the north east corner of the church building, which has brought life to an otherwise dark, dank and empty area. Snow drops, crocus and narcissi, followed by lily of the valley, form part of the spring display here.

A few steps further on at the rear of the church is a memorial bed, created in 2011 to commemorate both Canon Michael Sherwood, the vicar of St Marys’ between 1961 and 1986 and Derek Bowsher, a highly respected churchwarden. This area has proved to be one of our simplest yet most successful planting schemes, using different coloured heuchera, golden euonymus and evergreen ferns. It hardly needs spring flowers to make it more colourful, but for good measure we’ve added in tête-à-tête dwarf daffodils. Over the years we’ve experienced a huge amount of pleasure and satisfaction from working in the churchyard, making it a place for people to enjoy whether they’re visiting the church, taking a walk, or just sitting quietly on one of the several benches we’ve supplied. For more information about all the work we have carried out in the churchyard, or anywhere else in the town, visit our website tetburyinbloom. org.uk and go to the ‘What We Do’ section.

Tetbury Rail Lands Trust

March saw a wide variety of events down at the Shed. Musically, we roamed from folk to jazz to classical with some sea shanties and a great big ceilidh in the middle - and tickets for the movie Bohemian Rhapsody completely sold out. But if you missed it, don’t worry! We are showing it again on the 25th of April. Third generation falconer, Jemima Parry Jones MBE, brought along a couple of feathered friends to her talk the other week, explaining the position and plight of birds of prey in this country and beyond. Our weekly afternoon tea concerts every Wednesday are proving extremely popular and the regular meeting of writers in our train carriage are well attended. We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant that will enable us to collect memories from people who either worked on or used the Tetbury Branch line in the 1950’s and 60’s, before it was closed by ‘the Beeching cuts.’ This will form part of an audio history of the Branch Line and allow us to create a bigger and better exhibition regarding the background to the site, highlighting the whereabouts of major buildings. This April sees the one hundred and thirtieth anniversary year of the establishment of the branch line after a major campaign in the 1880’s. After the line opened in December 1989, local farmers got together to open a new cattle market where the Millennium Green now sits. Much of the early rail traffic was animals being taken to and from that market, as well as milk being taken out and coal supplies brought in. The train was also the means for people wanting to explore beyond Tetbury - with excursions being organised to Cirencester, London and the sea-side.

Chair of the Trustees Christine Berry said: ”We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this chance to expand our knowledge of the place of the line in our history - and hope lots of people who remember using or working on the line in the 50’s and 60’s will come forward with their memories.” Another development down by the Shed is the “Tetbury Trail.” Running between Tetbury and the Trouble House it takes the course of the old railway enabling walkers, cyclists and horse riders to enjoy the surrounding countryside. As part of the trail a series of exercise stations have been added, created in partnership by Tetbury Town Council and Gloucestershire County Council, designed to allow people of all ages and abilities to exercise or simply stretch the muscles in their body. Each station has its own sign board, which local businesses are invited to support with their company name and logo, at a cost of £300. For more information how to get involved please contact David Walker, Treasurer of the Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust, on 01666 500137.

Tetbury Nursery Playgroup The sun shining at playgroup put everyone in a very good mood; the children were able to access the garden freely, without coats, at times! Soon the rain came again, but we were not deterred, and the children made rain catchers to help with their maths in the garden.* Having spent longer in the garden of late, we have started to look at how we can develop the outdoor area. We are planning on making a bigger digging area, having seen how much the children enjoy digging and exploring. We will be planting a herb garden for the children to use in cooking activities and so that they can investigate

the smells and textures of herbs during their free play. They will also be able to cook with them, in their mud kitchen. Before any of the planting begins, we are looking to have the outside of the building painted, to make the building look fresher. As the bulbs begin to appear and we approach Easter, we are looking at growth, change and ‘new beginnings.’ The children have looked at farm animals and talked about the baby animals that are born at this time of year; this helps with their understanding of the world. The children have made some lovely pictures of the spring bulbs and have planted cress seed which is a good activity for children to understand growth and caring for plants with quick results. The children in the crèche and playgroup room have been busy making Mother’s Day cards and gifts. They have also been

Having raised money and received some lovely donations, we are about to have new blinds put in the windows which we had fitted last year. We have also invested in some new chairs for the growing number of children. The ‘play and stay’ group’s signing-in system seems to be working - and we really appreciate the support and understanding of the families who attend. last witness. When the prisoner’s husband came home, he and the prisoner went upstairs and brought down the trousers. They gave him the trousers and told him to put them under his jacket out of sight. Maria Walker deposed to seeing the prisoner take the trousers from Mr. Fisher’s shop. Police Sergeant White apprehended the prisoner and charged her with theft, which she denied. The prisoner, who had nothing to say. was committed for trial.

Meanwhile, another intriguing Cold Case file from our archives:

Stolen trousers, 1872: Tetbury Petty Sessions, Wednesday, before Capt. Brookes and Percy Chaplin Esq. Elizabeth Mann, (an old offender,) was brought up in custody charged with stealing a pair of cord trousers, of the value of 9s 6d, the property of Mr W. Fisher, outfitter, Tetbury. WM. Cox deposed that he was an assistant in Mr Fisher’s shop. On Tuesday morning he hung the trousers produced outside his master’s shop. About 20 minutes past 4.00 pm in the afternoon he was told that the prisoner had stolen the trousers. He went to the prisoner’s house and asked her for them. She denied taking them. About a quarter of an hour after, John Tanner, the next witness, brought the trousers to Mr. Fisher’s shop. He identified the trousers by their private mark.

Tetbury Theatre Group Our first event of the New Year was our AGM, and as I’ve previously I mentioned, our Treasurer and Booking Agent Lin Ashby had decided that it was time to retire, after twenty-eight years. Which is sad! But our new committee list still contains many familiar names – and here they are: Helen Price, Chairman and Booking Agent, Vice Chairman Diana Challis, Secretary Sue Cole, Treasurer Linda Stokes, Programme Researcher Shirley French, Publicity Officer Celia Bayes and Laurence Moss Website and Computer member. In March we went to see ‘Annie’ – a terrific musical - at the Bristol Hippodrome, and on the 18th of April we are off to Oxford to see ‘The Remains of the Day’ at the Playhouse in Oxford. This will be a day trip, so If anyone would like just the coach trip to Oxford it will cost £11. Oxford is an interesting city with wonderful buildings, museums and also very good shops! The 9th May trip is to see ‘Calendar Girls’ at the Millennium Theatre Cardiff. (I’ve already seen this in London – lucky me - and it was even better than the film!) In June we are off to the lovely town of Malvern to see ‘Mindcraft,’ in their wonderful theatre. In July it is our summer outing, which this year will be a boat trip round Bristol harbour then onward to the Avon Valley Railway. As you can see, we have a varied and interesting programme! if you want more information about these trips look on our website which is tetburytheatregroup. co.uk Members will be sent details of the outings by post or email. If you would like to join the Theatre Group, if you’d just like to share our coach with us on any of these outings, or if you need more information, then do contact Helen Price on 01666 503187 or Diana Challis on 01666 502768. Tetbury Town Football Club Into the final! Tetbury Town Men’s first team have progressed into the Gloucestershire Junior County Cup Final, with a superb 3-1 win against fellow Stroud League team Randwick. In what promised to be a tight affair it was Tetbury who flew out of the blocks and never let their opponents into the game. Two wonderful strikes either side of half time saw Tetbury take a 2-0 lead - and when the Randwick striker saw red after his second yellow card, the game seemed to be over. This was all but confirmed when 2-0 became 3-0 - and despite a late consolation goal for the hosts, it was Tetbury who progressed after a fantastic team effort.

Tetbury Counselling Service

It has been another busy and actionpacked month in the Youth. As we get near to the business end of the season, the hard work that all the coaches and players have put in has been bearing fruit. We have already had two cup semi-finals played Business Cards.indd 1 and the under-16 team have secured their league championship win! The under-12’s side have been breaking their own records, with an impressive run of seven victories in a row, the latest being a 4-0 win over Cotswold Rangers. The under-13 team narrowly missed out on a place in their cup final too, after an epic match that was finally decided on penalties. Such was the competition, effort and end-to-end drama, spectators were drawn to watch from several other games being played at the same time. While the final result did not go Tetbury’s way, everyone agreed that the players had done both themselves and their club proud.

As mentioned, our under-16 side secured their place as champions of North Wilts Division league three. A huge achievement, especially considering that they still have two games left to play! Many congratulations to the team and to their manager Rich Norris. As the youth side of the club has grown to over two hundred players across eleven teams, we are seeking two volunteers to continue to develop our sponsorship and fundraising efforts. This relatively small commitment would make a huge difference to our thriving club. If you feel that you could support the club in this way, or just want to find out more, please do contact us at tetburytownyouthfc@gmail. com to discuss it further. Tetbury Town Football Club

of both social activities and learning, in subjects of interest to them. As such, it has proved to be a cohesive force for regular social interaction with fellow members. It is members who decide which groups to form - and it is the enthusiasm of the group leader of each that is the key to U3A’s success. There are no ‘teachers’ - members all experience their activity together and learn from each other. Every group is selffunding and expenses are shared. The U3A welcomes all retired or semi-retired people. We very much hope that those interested will come and meet at the Goods Shed

With enthusiasm,

U3A on May the 8th at 10.30 am. Entrance is free and there will be refreshments and plenty of time for you to explore your own interests. The meeting will probably take just over an hour. If you cannot make this meeting. Our local coordinator, Jeremy North, will be pleased to field any questions - and if necessary, to arrange one-to-one meetings. He can be reached at jeremy@jeremynorth.com or on 01666 502974. More information: www. u3a.org.uk

Tetbury residents look forward to the launch of ‘U3A Tetbury,’ with a ‘getting to know you’ meeting in the Goods Shed on May the 8th at 10.30 am. There, representatives from the region including members from Malmesbury and Cirencester, will introduce the aims and objectives of the U3A, both at the national and local levels. It will also be very important to gauge local needs and to define the activities that this new U3A can offer. Founded over 35 years ago, the U3A (the ‘University of the Third Age,’) is not an institute of higher education; indeed, no academic qualifications are needed, and no awards are given. It is a charitable organisation that looks to encourage groups of people in their ‘third age’ to come together and continue their enjoyment

Woolsack Races We are already deep in to the planning of the Tetbury Woolsack Races 2019, to be held on the late May bank holiday, the 27th of May. The children’s races for several of the local schools will begin at 12.30, with the main races beginning at 1.00 pm. As ever, the centre of the town will be closed to allow for the French market, the many other independent stallholders and the fun fair, so if you usually park on Long Street, please ensure your car is out of the way by 8.00 am at the latest. Residents of Gumstool Hill, too, will need to move their cars by 8.00 am the day of the races please. We had an issue last year with cars having to be left at the top of the hill – marooned - on the morning of the races. Please make sure this is not you… We are delighted to welcome BPF Sports Hub as a main sponsor this year, but we still need the support of other local businesses for sponsorship and raffle prizes, so please

contact the committee if you wish to get involved. We need your support to keep the event going, so if you feel you can help us by putting out bins or barriers, or by collecting litter at the end of the day, please contact the committee; we desperately need your help! ALL support is gratefully received – and this year we are giving profits to the

Think you don’t need a water softener?

Health

Clothes

Children in hard water areas are 54% more likely to suffer from eczema. Hair washed in hard water is duller and rougher.

Utility bills

Detergent

Washing clothes in hard water makes the texture rougher and colour duller. Clothing life is reduced by up to 40%.

It’s hard to get a lather up in hard water and this can mean up to 50% more soaps, shampoos and detergents used.

Hot water

Limescale build up in pipes can increase your energy bills by up to 25%.

Pressure

Heating a tank of water can take twice or even three times as long as in a soft water area.

Water flow through a shower head can reduce by 75% in just 18 months of untreated hard water.

The Cotswolds lie in a hard water area where the minerals in water create limescale deposits when heated. The most visible sign of limescale in your home is furred up kettles and hazy glassware, but the hidden problems are costing your household hundreds of pounds a year. Can you afford to ignore your hard water? Contact us at The Tetbury Soft Water Company for a FREE survey and we can help. Our water softeners are ‘fit and forget’ and come with a 10 year Warranty.

Annual Report from Tetbury Town Council 2018-2019

Mayor’s Report It has been a very busy year as Mayor with various organised shows which I have had the privilege of att ending, including Woolsack Day, the Summer Show, the signing of the Twinning Agreement and the very memorable Poppy Day Remembrance. The Visitors Informati on Centre is looking superb with its refurbishment and signage and if you have not already been down there, I would recommend it. They have some lovely new merchandise in and the team, ably supported by Georgina, have worked very hard. I was able to meet up with the Guides and Air Cadets - and to see the work that they are doing; it was great fun. Due to illness, in December I was unable to att end all the Christmas Festi viti es, however my Deputy Mayor Kevin Painter stepped in and did a really good job. Thank you, Kevin. Budgets/Precepts are on everyone’s mind now, especially with the Council. It is always a diffi cult one when we have to look at our fi gures and increase our money. People have asked the questi on, “Why, when we have more houses built so a larger precept will be available, do we need to increase the Council Tax?” Unfortunately, like all householders, we must balance the books - and if people want a parti cular project to be done then this will cost money. We also like to support our local community, whether they are young or old, and this is an unknown amount when we set the new budget. Everything is expensive these days with the various shows and entertainment that is put on in the town, but if we did not have these events people would not come to visit our lovely town. Like everywhere else we need to adverti se events and people must be paid to entertain us. We need to be able to say that we are THE place to visit! Our various clubs do a brilliant job, including the Lions and Feoff ees. Sue and her team of gardeners keep our town looking beauti ful and colourful, and our Grounds Team do a brilliant job of keeping the town and surrounds looking spruce and ti dy. Thank you to all of you. And a Mayor can’t functi on successfully, unless they have a good team behind them - and we are very lucky to have an excellent Council and staff . Councillor Sandra Ball Mayor of Tetbury

The Annual Town Meeting will be taking place on Wednesday the 10th of April starting at 7.00 pm in the Dolphins Hall Please come along and have your say. A paid-for feature

Are you standing to become a Town Councillor in the elections on Thursday 2nd of May? We would like to give potenti al candidates the opportunity to promote yourselves and to provide the residents of the town with informati on on what you would hope to achieve if you were elected as a Town Councillor. The informati on you provide will be displayed on the noti ceboard at the Town Council offi ces from Monday the 7th of April through to Thursday the 2nd of May. Please forward a photograph and brief promoti onal details about yourself to executi veoffi cer@tetbury.gov.uk

Heritage and Regeneration Report With a ti tle such as ‘Heritage and Regenerati on’ you can imagine there is always something going on, and this Committ ee is known as the Council’s ‘doing’ committ ee. The statement “a committ ee is only as good as the team involved” may seem simplisti c, perhaps, but there is a mountain of truth behind it - and, our own Dynamic Duo Tara and Georgina have overseen, assisted in and, in most cases, run many of the Committ ee’s projects. In fact, our own Reverend Poppy Hughes called them the “Tetbury Fairies”! Here are a few of the edited highlights of what has been achieved: - Twinning Lighti ng of Candle Ceremony, Car Park Boards, Christmas Memory Tree and Carol Service, ‘Pride in Your Town’ Campaign, Council Representati on at the Remembrance Event in Châti llon-sur-Indre, the Poppy Appeal, the Burial Ground extension and design, the new ‘Visit Tetbury’ website and Social media, the Tourism boards and Civic Society plaques.

Our Police Museum is going from strength to strength, thanks to the work of our new Curator - Maria Marsh. The museum is now easily located, thanks to the Banksy-style police offi cer it has as life-size art. Well done too to the Visitor Informati on Centre Staff and Georgina, who have secured a VIC grant from Cotswold District Council for the next three years. We are also a listening Committ ee too – so when a resident spoke to the Committ ee to raise concerns about Health and Safety issues with the play equipment at the Recreati on Ground, the Dolphins Hall Management Committ ee obtained a quotati on, and we paid for the repairs instantly. Meanwhile, Councillor John Turton is working on Electric Charge Points for Vehicles and Electric Bikes and I am launching the 451 Comic Art Centre and the 451 projects/workshops/conventi on. Other projects being undertaken are the D-Day 75th Anniversary Celebrati ons, the Summer Expo Event, and the Inspirati onal Dolphin Awards. These successes are down to the Council’s Offi ce team, the Grounds Team, the VIC staff , my fellow Councillors and of course you the townsfolk, who not only inspire and assist us but are “our reason why.” Councillor Kevin Painter, Committee Chair

Finance & Scrutiny Report The Finance and Scruti ny Committ ee has the responsibility of overseeing the status of the Council’s fi nances and to ensure that good practi ce and legal statute is followed at all ti mes. We also ensure that appropriate staff development takes place. The year 2018/2019 has been a year of great fi nancial cauti on, our total income to date of £574,563 included S106 payments of £179,733 making net income £394,830 against an income budget of £384,295 - a surplus income of £10,535 Expenditure to date has been £430,912 against an annual budget of £547,659. We are sti ll working on two major projects, the new Burial Ground and supporti ng the Dolphin Hall Development. Grants to town organisati ons amounti ng to £9,450 have been paid to ensure that voluntary organisati ons can conti nue to provide benefi t to the town. Councillor Stephen Hirst Committee Chair

List of organisations benefitting from a Council grant in 2018/19: • • • • • • • •

New Picket Harp Allotments Association It has been a challenging year for the allotment associati on, with the cold start to 2018 followed by the summer heat, but good crops, parti cularly fruit, were sti ll reported by allotment holders at the AGM. Once again, the tenants conti nue to maintain their plots and treat their sheds - and this year some work is planned on some of the plot dividers, which are now in need of replacing. If you wish to join the waiti ng list for an allotment, please contact our Chairman and Secretary Charles Grene or myself, via the Town Council Offi ce. Councillor Nikki Ind Tetbury Town Council Representative on the Allotment Committee A paid-for feature

Planning Report The Planning Committ ee of Tetbury Town Council is a consultant body to Cotswold District Council Planning and our acti ons on planning applicati ons are recommendati ons only. This year we have had sixteen meeti ngs, with three more to occur before the end of the year. In these meeti ngs to date we have commented on eighty-nine applicati ons which cover full planning, outline planning, retrospecti ve planning, compliance applicati ons and tree works - either on trees protected by a Tree Preservati on Order or within the Tetbury Conservati on area. As a Committ ee we keep ourselves aware of any building works taking place, not already noti fi ed to us by Cotswold District Council or brought to our att enti on. We report to Cotswold District Council any work we feel requires a planning applicati on, or any work that contravenes a planning permission. Councillor Patricia Burrell, Committee Chair

Police Museum Report The past year has seen some changes at the museum. John Silvester reti red in August 2018 aft er many years at the helm. He then moved out of the area and we lost a valuable volunteer! We all owe John a huge amount of grati tude for all his hard work. I started as Honorary Curator in September and I am excited to be working with everyone in the offi ce, the town council and the people of Tetbury, to conti nue the work to make the museum a desti nati on for local people and visitors to the town alike. Meanwhile at the museum, visitor numbers are up. Throughout the summer holidays we were open every Saturday and as this proved very successful, it has been decided to open during special days like Heritage Open Days and Saturdays during school holidays in the coming year. That is, as oft en as possible, given that we need volunteers to open the museum on the weekends. We will be open over the whole of this Easter weekend and on Saturday the 13th of April, and I would like to thank all the ‘volunteer’ councillors who are making this possible. In the autumn we returned to Mr Alex Nichols all his foreign handcuff s and in exchange we received as a donati on eighty pairs of Briti sh handcuff s to add to our collecti on. This means we will certainly have one of the largest collecti ons of Briti sh handcuff s on display in Britain, once we get some new display cases. So watch this space! We’ve also recently received a beauti ful nineteenth-century presentati on clock, donated by two sisters descended from a former Deputy Chief Constable of Gloucestershire. It is now on display in the Courtroom. I att ended a meeti ng of the Gloucester Museum Group just before Christmas, which proved useful for making contacts among the area’s museums. In the future the aim is to have strong links with these museums. In January and February we were visited by students from St. Mary’s School and a class from Rodmarton School. We all had a lot of fun discussing Crime and Punishment, showing the students around and explaining the history of the police stati on. Hopefully next year we will get even more visitors of all ages. If anyone would like to volunteer or has any suggesti ons for the museum please contact me at curator@tetbury.gov.uk. Maria Marsh, Honorary Curator A paid-for feature

We have had a very busy and exciti ng year at the Visitor Informati on Centre (VIC). We’ve seen a 5% overall increase in visitor numbers and a 57% increase in visitors from abroad over the last two years, which ti es in with the work which Cotswold Tourism has been doing in Europe, to promote the Cotswolds as a holiday desti nati on. We’ve successfully secured our grant funding from Cotswold District Council for another three year period, as well as our yearly grant from Tetbury Town Council. Although we are lucky enough to receive these two grants, unfortunately they don’t cover all of our overheads, so we are working hard to increase our gift ware ranges and to off er display space to more local craft smen and women. We conti nue to support Tetbury Goods Shed and the Tetbury Music Festi val through selling their event ti ckets although sadly the Forestry Commission decided not to use the VIC to sell their summer concert ti ckets this year. We are extremely happy with our new Visit Tetbury website; we’re very lucky to have Tourism Branding Consultant Alison McKay living in the town and she greatly supported us through the project. We would like to work more closely with the community and businesses in promoti ng their events both on our website and through our social media streams. We recently added Google analyti cs to our website, which has given us a brilliant insight into exactly how far we’re viewed across the world - from Malaysia to Bermuda! We have been working hard at improving the resources available to Tourists; hopefully by the ti me you read this report the new Town Tourism Maps and Informati on Boards will have been installed in the West Street and Chipping Car Parks, along with the board outside The Goods Shed. We stock bus ti metables and we are happy to help with any ti metable enquiries you may have; we also conti nue to sell Nati onal Express ti ckets, which conti nues to be a very popular service. I would like to thank our three wonderful Visitor Informati on Centre Assistants Jill, Suzi and Chris for their conti nued hard work and enthusiasm. Georgina Osman VIC Manager

County Council Report The County Council Tax will be increased by 4.99% overall this coming year 2019/2020, listed on the Council Tax Bill as a 2.5% GCC increase and Adult Social Care levy of 2%. We expect Gloucestershire’s Council Tax to be the third lowest of any county council in England. Despite keeping tax down, the investment increases in key areas are: •

£2m extra to protect older people.

£11m extra for children and young people

Year 2 of the £150m investment into road resurfacing

£45m for Gloucestershire schools (part of our overall £100m commitment)

Demand continues to grow in key areas: •

The level of children in care has increased by 39% since 2014 (478 – 707)

Since 2015 the number of children requiring an Educational Care Plan (what used to be called a statement

of special educational need) has increased by 47%

The level of older people in Gloucestershire has grown by 28% since 2007, with projections showing

that the number of older people needing help with an illness or disability will increase by 41% in

the next 11 years.

Research in the Municipal Journal (of the 27th of February 2019,) puts Gloucestershire County Council seventh out of 150 English councils, in ‘care for older people.’ The recently agreed budget provides the second year of the £150m investment road resurfacing programme. In its first year, this saw one hundred and sixty-four projects carried out across Gloucestershire, with over 108km of roads resurfaced and 60km surface dressed. Since the start of April 2018 the Council has repaired almost 50,000 potholes on Gloucestershire roads with over 99% repaired on time. This year’s budget also provides every councillor with £25,000 of local funding to invest in repairing and upgrading roads and footpaths in their division. The £100m investment in Gloucestershire schools continues this year, with a range of capital projects including a brand-new secondary school for Cheltenham. Extra government help for Gloucestershire schools saw a further £1.35m in funding this year, to help cope with demand. The county council and local MPs continue to lobby for the new, fairer, national funding formula to be brought in more quickly. Homelessness: Thanks to a £950,000 investment from the Government, the county council is opening two new centres in Cheltenham and Gloucester to support homeless people. As well as helping with accommodation, the centres will offer specialist support for mental health and substance abuse. Even before the effects of Javelin Park are felt, Gloucester County Council has reduced its carbon emissions by over 52% since 2008. We achieved the government emission reduction pledge years early and are on track for our target of a 60% reduction by 2021. We are investing a further £1.4m from April into delivering fast broadband across the county. So far 97% of homes and businesses have access and work continues on the harder-to-reach areas. The County Council allocated £25,000 to ensure that Gloucestershire is ready for 5G mobile internet, helping support county businesses and protect jobs.

Councillor Stephen Hirst, Gloucestershire County Councillor for Tetbury

Cotswold District Council Report Following two years of freezes and three years of cuts, Cotswold District Council has decided to increase Council Tax by 2%, which is equivalent to 5p per household per year. Cotswold District Council Tax is still the twenty-first-lowest in the country. Cotswold District Council is judged to be the most efficient in the Country too, having moved from ninth place to first place out of 201 Councils. Green Bin Charges have been frozen again and will be reviewed at the back end of the year, to determine how recycling can be improved. Cotswold residents recycled 59.6% of all waste last year, a higher figure than the previous year and one of the few areas to increase recycling rates over previous years. We are now the 13th highest recycling District Council in the country, out of 350 Councils. An investment of £150,000 has been made in the expansion project of the Corinium Museum, to increase its attractiveness as a destination, as well as to help increase the footfall in the town centre. CDC Car Park Charges have been frozen for another year and the ‘Free after 3’ parking scheme continues in all CDC Car Parks. Plans are underway for a decked car park in the Waterloo and studies are in hand to provide a temporary parking deck in the Old Station Car Park. There will be an investment of £300,000 into Electric Car Charging Points. CDC Councillors have been given £2,500 each per ward to support grants for local community developments. There will be a two-year investment for action against environmental crime such as fly-tipping and dog fouling. Cotswold District Council have partnered with ‘Publica,’ to provide a major part of their administrative services. Council services will be provided at lower costs on a year-by-year basis. Tetbury in Bloom 2018 was the thirteenth anniversary of the current Tetbury in Bloom team. Despite the extremely dry and hot weather conditi ons in July and August, during which we struggled to keep the plants alive, it turned out to be another very good year. On almost every Tuesday and Thursday morning throughout 2018, we were out maintaining the many communal fl oral displays to our normal high standard. We sold and delivered one hundred and thirty-seven hanging baskets to traders and residents, and on Sunday the 29th of July we held our ninth ‘Open Gardens Day,’ during which eight local gardens were open to the public. Both fundraising initi ati ves helped generate valuable funds for Tetbury in Bloom, to purchase and replace the troughs at each of the fi ve entrances to Tetbury and to add two stone troughs to match those now on the south side of St Marys’ Church. In November we organised the town’s Christmas lights in the fi ve large trees and the lampposts in and around the town centre. We also dressed and sold thirty-one Christmas trees, which adorned the shop premises. Using Christmas lights as well as fl owers has allowed us to conti nue our aim of making Tetbury look one of the most att racti ve small towns in the South Cotswolds, throughout the enti re year. Our grateful thanks go to The Feoff ees, The Tetbury Lions, The Tetbury Evening WI, St Marys’ PCC, The Rotary Club of the South Cotswolds, Tetbury Town Council, the Council grounds and offi ce staff and the many Tetbury businesses and residents for their support. We also send our heartf elt thanks to Liz and Kevin Farnham who, aft er twelve years of being members of Tetbury in Bloom, decided in December to reti re from the organisati on. It goes without saying that they will be greatly missed. Liz, in her ‘Publicity’ role, wrote every one of our Tetbury Adverti ser arti cles since the end of 2006 and Kevin was our IT expert, photographer and webmaster. Mrs Sue Hirst, Chairperson

Highways Working Group As a working group of volunteers we have no ‘powers’ as such, we can only recommend to the Town Council our concerns and how we feel they could be dealt with. We have held regular meeti ngs and in these we agreed to carry out a survey to ascertain the views of Tetbury people. These opinions were in regard to possible town highway safety improvements. This exercise proved successful and the main issues highlighted were dangerous parking at juncti ons, loading restricti ons, lorries in town and the lack of parking. With this informati on we drew up a list of proposed restricti ons, (yellow lines,) which have been agreed by Gloucestershire County Council Highways. The Town Council approved the fi nances to cover its half of the matchfunding - and Gloucestershire County Council is now moving the applicati on for a Traffi c Regulati on Order forward. The Committ ee arranged a Lorry Watch for a complete week in March, and the informati on gathered gave an indicati on of the volume of lorries and their sizes, passing through Tetbury. This enabled us to provide Gloucestershire County Council Highways with an overview of Tetbury’s problem. I would like to extend my thanks to all volunteers - those that att end meeti ngs, those who carry out Speed Watch and those who assisted with Lorry Watch.
