Young by Name The Time-Travelling Shopping Basket When you reach a certain stage in life, it becomes nigh-impossible to know what you’d like for Christmas. Once you’ve paid off your mortgage and got the kids into net profit, if you want something, you buy it for yourself, regardless of the time of year. Or at least you do if, like me, you are a spendthrift with modest tastes. I’m in that happy stage between the habitual end-of-month overdraft of the heavily-mortgaged and the mid-life crisis for which the prescribed cure is a sports car. Consequently, until yesterday, my Christmas wish list was blank. Then, walking instead of driving up the road to buy a few groceries, (my usual car habit done for the sake of speed – if only Father Christmas could bring me more hours in the day, I’d put them on my list every year,) I realised I longed for an old-fashioned shopping basket on wheels. Not the horrid trolley only ever seen in supermarkets and upside down in ponds, nor the aluminium, nylon-bagged kind, nor even the medically-oriented type with so many

functions that it almost qualifies as a caravan - shopping bag, seat, balance aid. No! What I crave is the old-fashioned wicker basket on two wheels, pulled by a long wooden handle that looks like a walking stick sent out to work for its living. My grandmother, born in 1900, used hers on every expedition to her local shopping parade in the London suburb in which I grew up. Grandma’s trolley held just enough shopping for a few meals, plus a ball of knitting wool from her named box at Rema’s, the drapers. (We bought our jumpers in instalments in those days.) She could always squeeze in a quarter of sweets from the sweetshop too. Her every-other-day shopping habit had been formed when food was bought in small quantities, fresh, dried or in cans, before the fridge - never mind the freezer - had become commonplace.

Allsorts Allsorts Gloucestershire is asking people to help them grant Christmas wishes for children with additional needs. They’re asking for donations to make sure everyone can have fun in 2018. They are hoping to raise £5,000 over the festive period, to enable them to offer more activities and specialist equipment for children with disabilities or additional needs. Even a small donation can make a big impact and will be used to help children and families in Tetbury and across Gloucestershire. Families with children with additional needs often find it hard to access things that others take for granted; Allsorts exists to take barriers away and make sure that the whole family can have fun together. With experienced staff and specialist equipment, Allsorts has a great track record of providing family fun and making sure everyone can join in. From youth clubs to sports, a specialist toy library to a toddlers group and more, there’s something on offer for all ages and abilities. Chris is 15 and was diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome before he was

ten. He struggled from a young age and changed primary school so he could have a fresh start. He began trampolining with Allsorts three years ago. Initially he didn’t want to participate, he just came along with his brother, but once he’d had a go he was hooked and has never looked back. Trampolining became a positive outlet for Chris and his high energy levels and it’s given him more self-esteem, allowing him to switch off from the hassle of the day and things that make him angry. Chris says “When I trampoline I don’t think about anything except bouncing. Assimilating new businesses Many years ago, when my sons were at school, they unexpectedly received a new headmaster who we named “Marstock” after Harold Nicolson’s character in his amusing masterpiece “Some People”. “Marstock” told us he would change everything, despite numbers being up in the school, which had survived successfully through ups and downs for 400 years. True to his word he changed the names of the various houses and made other superficial alterations, (which only upset die-hard supporters,) - many to suit his own prejudices. The school then suffered a decline in numbers. I believe successful changes of regime are all about “maintaining a balance.” The same applies to cataclysmic events like death and divorce, which sometimes bring to the surface dark undercurrents that have lain dormant until the force that kept them

Likewise, mergers and takeovers at solicitor’s firms can be very tricky, especially when the previous owners are looking towards retirement. In one case I recall a family firm had been going along fine for 200 years until the “number two” - who had been responsible for taking it up a league said to the “number one” who was retiring, that to become a working consultant he would have to earn his keep now that number two was to become king - and would have to give up his room. Number one’s son objected, number two was fired, and the firm split. Number one came back, like Marshal Petain, to work out his twilight years without number two. Another firm’s senior partner devised a rule that everyone should retire at sixty-five - but when it came to his turn he thought better of it! He was duly cast out, though, despite his grandfather being the founder of the firm. Doctors used to have similar problems, although with the parlous state of the NHS and the bureaucracy I doubt if the idea of “staying on” appeals as much as it used to.

Being inherently weak when I have taken over firms, I have always wanted to please the retiring principal and find out more about the qualities that bred success - and what needed change. The problem with this policy, was that the former principals - now freed from the shackles of having to run their firms began to enjoy themselves too much, and often stayed in their rooms imagining that the firm was still theirs, maintaining their client relationships. The result is that with age discrimination against the employer it is difficult to get to know your own clients. It is only after the departure of the consultants that the firm is really yours, and the clients can genuinely test your own abilities. Using the school analogy again, on a different tack, Marstock could - I am sure - take delight in the success of his former pupils, succeeding despite his blunders. I have taken pride in my successful recruits, nurtured their careers and enjoyed their successes, only to find predators on the doorstep offering a future they cannot refuse …

Thanks to Richard Norris and to the two hundred or so young footballers in Tetbury Town Football Club, who are bringing dried or tinned items to their weekly training sessions in order to generate a big handover to the Food Bank at their Christmas party. WSP Textiles Ltd staff, too, are filling decorated gift bags with ‘Christmas extras’ for our clients, which will be given out nearer Christmas. Avening Primary School It’s Showtime! As the countdown to the end of term begins, staff have been rummaging amongst the props and costumes in the craft cupboard, classes have been practising their singing and the rehearsals have begun for this year’s Christmas productions. This year, the Eagles and the Kestrels (reception, Y1 & Y2) will be performing ‘Wriggly Nativity’ – a Christmas performance where we just can’t keep still! Meanwhile, in KS2, the Hawks and the Owls have been getting magical, as they prepare to tell the story of Aladdin in their production of ‘A- lad- in trouble!’ Key Stage 2 are also rehearsing with SWR’s music teacher, Mr Dillon, ready to perform at the SWR Carol service in St Mary’s Church, Tetbury at the end of term. As well as performing, we are also enjoying some theatre trips ourselves. In December, the infant children are off the Wyvern Theatre to see Peter Pan and the Owls were fortunate to see War Horse last month at the Bristol Hippodrome. They were completely spellbound by the experience, so much so that they wrote some brief reviews to the director of the play. The production company were so impressed that they plan to use six of these reviews as part of their social media advertising for the show. Seeing the production really helped the children to appreciate the horrors of World War 1, and this was something we all thought about as the school participated in our Remembrance Service this year. The Year 6 children solemnly read the names of the fallen from Avening, while the School Council placed crosses around the base of the Millennium Cross.

Happiness Week lifted our spirits during mid-November, when the children took part in a range of activities designed to promote mental health and anti-bullying messages. The children took part in a yoga session, a samba drumming workshop and decorated friendship pebbles – a token of kindness for others to find around the school. As the end of term comes ever closer, the glitter is beginning to sparkle as we prepare for our festive season, starting with the FOAS Christmas Fair on Friday 1 December, 2.30-4.30 in the Village Hall. Term ends with a magical Christingle service in the church, followed by our Christmas parties – and you never know when a certain whitebearded, red-robed special guest might make an appearance....

Cotswold Voluntary Wardens Selsey Common We have had a session on the Common last month, at the request of the National Trust, where we spent a happy hour or two cutting back Cotoneaster, which is a nonnative species and would self-seed and spread rapidly over the open pasture land if left unchecked. There are lovely views from up on the common.

Coppicing We have been coppicing in the woodland near Didmarton. Coppicing is a traditional winter activity in hazel woods and it involves cutting down to the tree stumps, about every seven years, to produce bean poles, “heatherings,” for use in binding hedges (which we have laid,) and fence posts. We will use the heatherings when hedge laying later in the winter. We’ve also been over to Dursley, where we cleared an overgrown bridleway at Dursley, toward Uley.

Tetbury Railway Bridgeway At the request of the Rail Lands Trust, we returned for another session of clearance at the Trouble House - and from there half way toward the Long Newton Road. On this occasion, we were removing bramble and hawthorn so that the path is restored to the raised railway formation,

rather than in the wet ditch alongside the fence. In 1889, it certainly seems that the Great Western Railway knew how to build a dry route! The detail of this cover from Stephen Randolph’s 1985 book “The Tetbury Branch” illustrates just this section of the pathway.

I love these words, written by Archbishop Justin Welby. And he is right, isn’t he? So, through this time of Advent, perhaps find a place where you can be still and silent. In that moment, pay attention to what is going on within you and around you. Listening to your heart and to the world like this begins to enable us to listen to God. We might only hear him faintly, but as we do so we can catch his whisper of love. In Advent time, we are preparing ourselves to experience Christmas richly and joyfully: to know love from heaven to earth come down. History of Tetbury Society ‘The Death of a King’ was the subject of Peter Petrie’s talk to HOTS on the 2nd of November. That the King is dead is quite certain, since Edward II was king from 1307 to 1327 - but when, how and where he died will never be known for certain. Berkeley Castle firmly believe he was brutally murdered there in captivity, and have the very room on display. He had been forced to abdicate in 1327 by his Queen and her lover Roger Mortimer. It is said his body was taken to Gloucester Abbey (now the Cathedral,) and that it is buried in a vault underneath the magnificent tomb that Edward III had erected.

In 1314 Edward was blamed for the defeat at Bannochburn and this was followed by famine and troubles over the King’s new favourite, Hugh Despenser. War had broken out with France in 1324 so Queen Isabella went to France to negotiate with her brother, the new French King. She remained in France and became friendly with Roger Mortimer. They raised a small army to invade England, with the intention of removing Edward from the throne. They landed on the river Orwell near Felixstowe in 1326 where they were joined by others who disliked the Despenser influence. Later that year Hugh Despenser was executed and in January 1327 Edward was forced to abdicate in favour of his 14-year-old son,

Prince Edward III. Mortimer and Isabella acted as regents. Edward II’s reign is regarded as disastrous – and the influence of Gaveston and Despenser highly unorthodox. Mr Petrie dealt eloquently with a complex and controversial history. Our next meeting is our Annual Social on Wednesday the 6th of December for which tickets have been on sale. We then meet again in Christ Church at 7.30 pm on Thursday the 4th of January 2018, for our ‘Archive Meeting,’ when we would be pleased to see any of your historic items. There is some evidence that he was moved to Corfe Castle in Dorset and even onward to Ireland. However, a real mystery stems from a document known as ‘the Fieschi letter,’ that was discovered in France in a register dated before 1368. The letter was written in Latin by an Italian priest to King Edward III, telling him that after his father left Ireland he moved to Holland. It then gives details of a journey to the South of France, then northwards to Koblentz before turning south again to northern Italy. Modern scholars are convinced that this document is genuine and prefer the evidence of the ‘hard copy’ to the original history. So, his body may rest in Italy. Edward II’s life had its controversies. He was born in 1284 at Caernarfon Castle and Edward I presented the baby as the first Prince of Wales. He was the 14th child but the only boy to survive. He acceded to the throne in 1307 when his father died. In 1308 he married Isabella of France, which was an arranged marriage intended to ease tensions with France, since he was probably homosexual. We are well into autumn with Christmas fast approaching and when the sun has come out, it has been lovely - especially driving along the road with the sun is shining on the trees, showing their beautiful colours. It is lovely to appreciate the wonders of the world. Other parts of the world suffer war and famine and although some here are suffering too, when things have gone wrong either in work life or through illness, those who are doing OK should appreciate all that is around them. I have just returned from ten days in Cornwall which was beautiful, with lovely weather and with the sun shining. Never before have I been able to spend my birthday in this country and in the sunshine - without a coat! We will soon be approaching Advent and lighting the first candle on our Advent wreath. The circle of the wreath reminds Christians of God, His eternity and His endless mercy, which has no beginning and no end. The green of the wreath speaks of the hope that Christians have in God, the hope of newness, of renewal, of eternal life. Candles symbolise the light of God coming into the world through the birth of his son, Jesus, and the four traditional advent themes for the four advent Sundays are: God’s people – The Candle of Hope: Hope is like a light shining in a dark place. As we look at the light of this candle we celebrate

The fifth candle represents the Birth of Christ: The flame of this candle reminds us that He is the light of the world and that if we follow Him; we will never walk in darkness, but will have the true light of life. As we prepare for Christmas, let us remember that Christmas should be a special time of year no matter what faith we have; as a child we always had a crib on display, a tradition that I have continued during my marriage; the sight of children’s faces lighting up at the sight of presents under the tree; coming out of the Church after Midnight Mass especially when it is a clear night and looking up at the stars after listening to the account of Jesus’ birth. As Christian’s we are brought up learning about the true meaning of Christmas but it is not until we get older we fully appreciate what it really means to believe. News from Christ Church In cowboy films of old, when the few embattled heroes were holed up in some shack fighting for their lives, surrounded by Red Indians who were hollering and waving tomahawks (sorry, that’s not very PC but let’s overlook that for now,) you would hear distant gunshots and catch the sight of men on horseback, one of them carrying the Yankee flag – and you knew that the end was in sight, that rescue was at hand and that in the nick of the time the heroes would be saved and the baddies dispersed. In short, the cavalry was coming. At moments in my life both in jest and in full seriousness I have wondered ‘When is the cavalry coming?’ Or as the Psalmist puts it more religiously and eloquently, ‘I lift up my eyes to the hills – from where does my help come?’ God’s conclusive answer to that question came in a remote village in Palestine, with a travelling man and woman, some shepherds from the nearby hillside, some travellers from the east, and later still some soldiers from the Emperor. God’s answer, God’s rescue plan, takes the form of a babe in arms. Computer Advice Are you at risk from the KRACK Wi-Fi vulnerability? You may have seen in the press, or have been notified by your security package, about a recent weakness found within the WPA2 Wi-Fi standard. This new threat has yet to be exploited, but could enable an attacker to see what you are doing and could intercept any unsecured web data from your wireless connection. They would however need to be within range of your Wi-Fi signal. Importantly, they would not be able to see any data from secure websites, such a banking or shopping sites as the data is further encrypted.

Make sure your computer is downloading regular Windows security updates, as they are imperative to keep you safe. If you have not seen an update when shutting down and restarting your PC recently, this may be affecting you. You may think that there is nothing important on your PC, so you are not concerned about its security. Well do think again, as it could be remotely controlled and used to attack another computer or network. You might also consider a free upgrade to Windows 10 (with only my time to cover,) as you only have around two years before it goes â&#x20AC;&#x153;endof-life.â&#x20AC;?

The Guides and Brownies were, as always, proud to be part of Tetbury’s Remembrance Service and Parade. This year 1st Tetbury Guides dressed the commemorative stone outside the Malt House and have also taken part in the Ribbon of Poppies. This is an initiative set up to create a carpet of poppies across the UK to mark the centenary of the end of the 1st World War in 2018. The Feoffees gave us permission to plant up a section opposite the allotments on Herd land and (luckily) Terry Lee kindly prepared the ground for us. We went out on a cold night and all helped to scatter the poppy seeds. Let’s hope for a carpet of red next year.

Now, our best memories of guiding are often the days we spend away - and from Charlotte’s report it sounds as though our current Brownies will have some great memories of their Pack Holiday.

During half-term we took eighteen Brownies away to Macaroni Woods. Our theme was “I’m a Brownie - get me out of here!” For several of them this was their first time staying away from home so after settling in we got stuck into making jungle camp flags, which were then displayed around our holiday home. In the morning, all the brownies were a little sleepy as the last brownie went to sleep just before midnight.

The Brownies said: “That Pack Holiday was amazing; my favourite part was the bug house building and I beat my biggest fear and held a massive spider!” All in all it was indeed a fantastic Pack Holiday, and I would like to thank every single leader for all their help - before, during and after the event. Here’s to Christmas Pack Holiday 2018.

Rotary Club of South Cotswolds Since our 50th Charter Dinner in June it has been a busy time for the Club over the past few months. At the start of the new Rotary Year in July we had our “New Year BBQ” to celebrate the start of resident Alan Shepherd’s year in office. One of the main projects that the Club has undertaken since then was the annual Horseless Team Event cross country, run in the wonderful surroundings of Badminton Park. Several hundred runners enjoyed superb weather on the 8th of October, running five, nine or thirteen miles. As always, the club needs other organisations to assist them, and this year the ATC provided valuable radio support (which enhances their

training,) the Girl Guides operated the vital water points, Crudwell Scouts supported us with the provision of our registration marquee, and we had the invaluable support of Tetbury Lions and other Rotary Clubs, who provided us with marshals. Without them all we would not have been able to provide a safe environment for the competitors, so many thanks. Following hard on the heels of that event, we hosted the Rotary District 1100 Boules Festival at The Red Bull on the following weekend. Unfortunately, the club were unable to emulate the success of previous years; the competition was won by Royal Wootton Bassett and District Rotary Club. Our thoughts then turned to the annual Bonfire and Fireworks Spectacular, held at Sir William Romney School. Over a thousand people enjoyed a superb Fireworks display, put on by Cotswold Fireworks. Their finale seems to get better every year. The club were again grateful to Tetbury Lions for helping to marshal the event, which is intended to be a Community Service Project, providing a safe environment for families to enjoy fireworks at a reasonable cost. Tetbury Rugby Club provided the hot dogs and burgers. In addition to these major events we have continued to have an interesting variety of speakers at our weekly meetings. Of particular note was Shaun McCormack, a former Yeoman Warder of the Tower of London who gave a fascinating insight into

the Tower of London and its history. As we approach Christmas we will be preparing our Christmas Sleigh to take Father Christmas round the villages of Minety, Lea, Crudwell and Sherston and the town of Malmesbury. Tetbury is served by the Fire Brigade float. As Rotarians we continue to support the local community and have make donations to Friends of Tetbury Hospital as well as to St Mary’s School - in addition to our major grant to Tetbury Goods Shed earlier in the year in celebration of our 50 years as a Rotary Club. Tetbury Town Youth Football During the countdown to Christmas, players at the club are busy donating items to help support the Tetbury Food Bank. With so many organisations and businesses from the town continually showing support for the club, it is pleasing to see the players give something back to such a worthy cause. The donations will be presented to the food bank by the children following our Christmas Party.

We are looking forward to the Christmas Party on Saturday the 16th of December at the Dolphins Hall, where the younger members of the club and their families can begin their festive celebrations. The children will be entertained with a magic show, disco, face painting, lucky dip and the traditional visit from one of Santa’s little helpers. Who will draw the short straw this year?!

Fifteen ladies took part in a gin-tasting event, where they sampled gins from the four corners of the UK. The Scottish gin proved to be the most popular. Our visit to Cheltenham to see “The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain” was enjoyed by us all. The depth of sound produced by eight ukuleles was impressive, and many well-known songs were given an original twist. The performers were excellent and also very amusing, so the evening passed very quickly. In November we held our Annual Meeting after the usual monthly one, and it was followed by some social time during which we discussed some of our personal “Pet Hates,” some of which were unusual and many of which were really very funny. Our next meeting will be at 7.30 on December the 11th at the Dolphins Hall. This is our Christmas Social and we are going to learn a lot about cider - a typical West Country product. Its arrival the other day certainly created a bit of a stir, as it trundled through the town before being craned into position behind the main Goods Shed and now Will Cook and his team are now hard at work, checking the carriage out, ensuring it is waterproof, and starting on the renovation. Avening WI The members of Avening WI have been very busy over the last few weeks and we have an even fuller programme coming up before Christmas. We have had our fun quiz for members and villagers, which is always well supported. We will be sending the proceeds from the quiz to Tetbury Hospital. Shirley Hand who organises the quiz (and usually writes this report) was unfortunately unable to attend, as she fell and broke her hip the previous week. Happily, she is now on the mend.

We agreed that we would love to repeat the walk but on a dry day. Not put off, we are having a November walk along the newly restored Thames and Severn Canal followed by lunch at the Clothiers Arms. Our November meeting, which was also our AGM, was well attended. We were entertained by Sue Prentice and her friend, who call themselves ‘The Dame and the Diva’. They were a very funny duo with songs, poems and stories all aimed at women of ‘a certain age.’ Our pre-Christmas activities will be our

usual shopping trip when we will be going to Worcester during the Victorian Christmas Fair, Christmas lunch at the Snooty Fox, the WI Carol Concert at Cheltenham Town Hall and our own Christmas party where we have games supper and Secret Santa gifts. We fervently hope that both Shirley and our Senior Lion, Bert Hand, have a wonderful Christmas - and that they’ll both be fighting fit again for the New Year.

We had two teams through to the final of the biennial County WI Quiz and we came 5th and 14th. The winners were Frampton on Severn. Despite not winning we all enjoyed the evening very much. A group of members attended the Christmas Craft Fair at the NEC. It was an excellent show, but a very long day - and most of us came home laden with goodies, ideas and good intentions. Soon we will be holding a Christmas wreath-making session run by our own members. One of the wreaths will be used as a table decoration at the two Christmas lunches, which we will cooking and serving to local groups in December. We are having a friendly skittles match with Nailsworth WI, and we will have a bringand-share supper. This in an opportunity for members to have a go at skittling, even if they have not played before. Our monthly walk in October proved to be the wettest we have ever undertaken. We started at Hunters Hall and walked through the lovely valley to Lasborough Manor. We arrived back at the pub soaked to the skin and steamed gently while eating lunch!

“Take Six Girls,” the Lives of the Mitford Sisters a biography by Laura Thompson

father. The eldest daughter, Nancy, immortalised their unconventional childhood in her book ‘The Pursuit of Love’. At times exaggerated, at others downplayed, it is from this that much of the Mitford legend traces its roots.

The Mitfords came from an ancient and aristocratic family in decline. Educated at home near Moreton-in-Marsh, their main influences were their aloof mother and endearing but financially incompetent

Gaining adulthood in the early 1930’s, the opposing tides of Fascism and Communism vied for their attention. Some of the girls were attracted by these extremes, some repelled. Whilst Nancy became an established and successful writer, three of the girls sought to escape the bounds of family by rebelling against it. Diana, initially making a fantastic marriage to the heir of the Guinness fortune, outraged society by leaving him for the notorious womaniser and leader of the British Fascists, Oswald Mosely. Perhaps seeing the attention this brought her, the passionate but simplistic Unity then stepped up the shock-value by making friends with Hitler. To counter-balance both these sisters, Jessica became a Communist. Unable to reconcile herself to war between England and Germany, Unity tried to commit suicide. Although she survived, she was brain damaged, eventually dying eight years later from meningitis brought on from an infection from the bullet lodged in her brain. After losing her first child, Jessica left the country with her husband and went to live in New York, whilst Diana, reviled by press and public alike, was incarcerated in Holloway Prison, just weeks after the birth of her youngest son. She remained there for three years until released under caution due to ill health.

Chelworth Bookworms During the war Nancy met the love of her life, Gaston Palewski, a Free-French officer on General de Gaulle’s staff. She was completely smitten - totally infatuated. Once France was liberated, she followed him there and it was in Paris that ‘The Pursuit of Love’ was written. Published at the end of 1945, it was this book that started the rehabilitation of the Mitford’s in the public’s eyes. Their extremism was pushed aside, and the eccentricities of their upper-class English childhood turned them into the more benign ‘Mitford Girls’. After the war, the girls became more acceptable. Nancy’s writing had made her rich and famous, Diana retreated to rural France to avoid the British press and Pamela divorced her first husband to great financial gain. Deborah meanwhile began the great work of trying to save the Chatsworth estate after the ravages of death duties incurred when her husband inherited. Only Jessica remained stubbornly controversial. Joining the American Communist party, she and her second husband were constantly watched by the FBI, paranoid about ‘Reds under the Bed’. The Mitford’s story is a complicated one, but this book explores their motivations in detail, if never truly understanding them. What comes across most is their utter belief in themselves and their indifference to what other people thought. The people who really mattered to them were each other. The library’s front window and children’s zone will be decorated (come and see!) and there will be free family crafts:

When I last wrote, the Beavers were looking forward… …to a visit from the animal man and the anticipation was well worth it. Amongst other animals, they met a bullfrog, a tortoise and a snake … and many of them were even brave enough to hold Rosie the Tarantula! The Beavers and the Scouts have been making the most of the dark evenings this month. On our Beaver’s night hike, they solved puzzles to gain a share of the hidden treasure and enjoyed the flapjacks that they had made the week before. They also used the Forest School area at St Mary’s Primary School for some campfire

treats and songs, where they welcomed Arlo, Francis, Jack, Thomas, Noah and Caleb to join our fun, with a firelight investiture. The Scouts went down to the Goods Yard and played a game of “hunt the leader” by listening for whistle blows coming from their hiding place. They had a fun science evening where they made a sort of plastic from milk and vinegar, created bubble volcanos and made black snakes from sand and sugar. Both units were very proud to be part of the Remembrance Sunday parade. For the meeting closest to Remembrance Day, the Scouts recreated an air raid shelter and were treated to the joys of spam sandwiches and tea or camp coffee, for those brave enough to try it!

Since Helen Keller challenged Lions to become “Knights of the Blind” in 1925, Lions Clubs around the world have dedicated resources to improving eye health and eye care for hundreds of millions of people globally. In line with this global initiative to preserve the precious gift of sight for the world, Tetbury Lions have donated £300 to assist Jo Forss with her inaugural Vision Aid project.

Leaving her ophthalmic practice Jo, along with five others, has volunteered for a twoweek Vision Aid assignment in Nekemte, Ethiopia. During the visit she will be training ophthalmic nurses and eye clinic technicians in the local vision centre as well as performing eye tests in the local hospital. Jo will also spend several days

ophthalmologists in the whole country most in the capital, Addis Ababa. Dolphins Dramatic Society Once again, another production has been put to bed - and already the society is choosing its spring production. Anne Smith, with the help of Jenny Miles, worked - as always - very hard indeed on this production, and once again pulled off a great panto. Well done Anne and Jenny. They were both ‘Sleepless Beauties,’ from all the worry of putting on a good show – through things like issues with the hall and a big concern with Cotswold Costumes. Anne and Jenny, like many of us, were told that Cotswold Costumes were closing; luckily this proved to be wrong - they were changing hands. Yes folks, they are still going strong. The Society has been blessed with the five new members, recently joined:

Martin (The Dame,) Neil (Carabosse,) Carla (Princess Aurora,) Helen (Prince Orlando,) and Mark (chorus and stage management.) They were all brilliant! We so hope that they will all stay with The Dolphins. Thanks to the wonderful David Hudson, who travels from Cornwall to provide his knowledge and his vast library of lighting and special effects. Without him we would have no stage lighting. Thanks to Rick Hicks for all the amazing props he made, to Ian Smith, who works away quietly and does so much for the society – and an extra BIG thank you to The Snooty Fox for displaying our huge promotional banner and lending us two of their chairs. breakfast and after school club building when the new classrooms are ready after Christmas.

The children at Leighterton Primary School enjoy the range of clubs we offer. Our wrap around childcare starts at 7.30 am until 6.00 pm and includes breakfast club and after school club. There are lots of other clubs available as well and the children would like to tell you about them:

Breakfast Club I like having marmite on toast for my breakfast. I like playing with the purple bear when I’ve eaten my breakfast. Today I was drawing a Christmas tree with my friends. Matilda (age 4)

After School Club My favourite snack is either cheese on toast or tomato soup with bread and butter. I like playing outside, especially when we go to the park. I enjoy playing on the climbing frame and going on the slide. When we go back inside, I enjoy reading and making things. I use my crafting skills to design and make paper planes. It’s fun when I test these too. My best plane flew all the way from one end of the hall to the other. I’m looking forward to moving into the new

Tag Rugby Tag rugby club is a really good way to keep fit and it’s fun at the same time. We always begin with a warm up and then we play some games. At the end, we usually have a match. The coach is nice, and he is good fun too. I enjoy it a lot and I know all the other people, who go, do too. This term we have a tag rugby club, and this is swapped each term. Last term we learnt football skills (and we got very wet!) and I can’t wait to see what we will learn next term. Joshua (age 9)

Running Club Each Monday morning, we all meet in the back field at school to do a warm up. Each age group does a slightly different warm up, for example, the Year One children weave in and out of the cones while the Year Six group have to move their bodies through hoops then weave in and out of the cones and run down back to the beginning. After that we start running around the edge of the field and complete as many laps as we can. Yesterday most people managed to complete either a half or a whole kilometre and we are rewarded with a snack so that we still have energy to go into school to begin learning. Alexander (age 10)

Probus Christmas… …is a time for giving worldwide, so our recent talks were focused on charities. We started in Romania, which in the time of Soviet power was an outstanding example of socialist rule. The cities were run like a lunatic asylum – and the countryside like a graveyard. The rabid policies of Nicolai Ceaucescu caused even greater problems, which charities such as Christian Aid to Romania are still striving to alleviate. Our speaker on the 5th of October, Mike Ogbourne, described his work, the desperate situation some younger Romanians face, and the beautiful country recovering from its dark years. His talk was a thorough account of his charity’s efforts and of the country itself. Another Christian charity, but with a very different aim, was the subject of our next meeting on the 15th 0f October. The Sailors’ Society, the oldest of several charities engaged in the same work, tackle the problems the seamen who man the world’s cargo ships face, our speaker Yvonne Penn explained. While some companies treat their crews fairly, others do not.

Our speaker described the many ways the Society provide assistance and comfort, and as a bonus treated us to a glimpse of the ships themselves, even a short clip of a bulk carrier in very heavy weather, decks awash. Very different again was the El Shaddai Street Child Rescue Charity, Also Christian-led, this currently supports 4,500 disadvantaged children across India through its shelters, homes, schools, medical centres and skills training centres. They are a safe and caring haven for orphans, street slum and other vulnerable children rescued from the eleven million homeless children of India. Founded by Anita Edgar, a committed humanitarian aid nurse, Anita told us on the 2nd of November how she had been appalled by the number of povertystricken and abandoned children she had seen during a visit to Goa in 1996. Since no-one was providing help in any way, she immediately opened a home. She explained to us how this entrenched and

sad situation for children had arisen and was being perpetuated, and the difficulties such children encountered in later life. Anita then described the formal setting up process of her charity, the amazing progress it had made, and the range of activities developed. Illustrating the day centres and shelters, she emphasized the charity’s need for sponsorship for the care and development of individual children. It was an impassioned talk from a remarkable lady who had achieved so much. Looking ahead we have a varied programme of talks planned for the New Year. Potential new members would be very welcome to come along on the first and third Thursdays of each month to share it with us. Tetbury and Tetbury Upton Neighbourhood Plan Referendum: Protect our green spaces As you may know, our Neighbourhood Plan has passed the examination stage and will be the subject of a referendum on Tuesday the 5th of December at the Dolphins Hall. The Neighbourhood Plan will give some protection from further development in Tetbury and District - and in particular to the seven Local Green Spaces (LGS,) identified in the plan. In the examination

stage the Examiner amended the Plan by adding that planning permission for the Green Spaces should not be given, “unless there were exceptional circumstances.” The Local Green Spaces are an important part of our town’s history, as many of them form the landscaped setting to Tetbury’s Historic buildings. In many cases these spaces are as important to our townscape as the historic buildings themselves. Many of the LGS contain ancient trees, which provide much of Tetbury’s green and pleasant environment and they need to be protected from development. Some of the LGS provide a quiet and tranquil

The Local Green Spaces form part of several “green corridors,” which bring the surrounding rural environment into the centre of our town, reinforcing the typical “Cotswold” character beloved by residents and visitors alike. These corridors also provide a haven for wildlife, which is able to find safe spaces in which to breed and a corridor away from busy roads to move from one source of food to another. The five main objections to the Draft Neighbourhood Plan were from developers or their agents who want to turn our historic green environment into an urban landscape. If the people of Tetbury and Tetbury Upton vote with a majority in favour of the plan, then we will have a valuable defence against further development in the Tetbury area. It’s that time of year when there is added sparkle and shine in every corner of the room, and the sound of jingle bells can be heard throughout the morning. But before we get too carried away with our festivities, we look back over the past couple of weeks when we have been rounding off our autumn topic. We all enjoyed a visit to see the wonderful new Gruffalo characters that have come to live in the deep dark wood at Westonbirt. The weather was perfect – cold and crisp but beautifully sunny and the children were so excited as they discovered the mouse, fox, owl, snake and squirrel. It was also fantastic that so many parents were able to join us on the

day. We collected lots of leaves for painting, printing and rubbing and conkers for rolling, and we’ve been busy decorating the tree kindly donated to us by the Tetbury WI into a colourful autumn display. The children have learned a little about hibernation, which was explored further when John and Julien from the Help a Hedgehog Hospital came to visit. They gave a little talk and brought with them a little spikey friend, who was a big hit. We are very grateful to John and Julien for taking the time to come and see us, and for being so wonderful with the children. We hope the hedgehogs at the hospital enjoy the cat food that the children collected for them!

Puddle Ducks We have, of course, been hard at work learning carols for our Nativity play, which will once again be held in St. Saviours Church. Our grateful thanks go to the Churches Together organisation, for giving us permission for this wonderful event. The Nativity last year was a real highlight for us, and we know this year will be even more special. If we are very, very lucky we may even be visited by a very special someone who has promised to try and fit us in, despite this being his busiest time of year! As we close the door on 2017 we would like to thank everyone who has shown their support to us over the last year, and in particular over recent weeks. Thank you to both St. Mary’s School and to Tetbury Library for inviting us to visit them several times throughout the year. These visits are always enjoyed by both the staff and the children. Thanks also to Hobbs House Bakery, for our yummy snacktime bread, which is very much appreciated every day. We are looking forward to returning on the 3rd of January, for more fun and learning through play, when we will also be adding our pre-school afternoon sessions for those children who will be moving on to primary school in September. These are always great fun and a fantastic way to prepare the children for their transition. And now it only remains for us to wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful holiday season. The Volunteer Befriending Service I am sure many of you have heard of People For You, the volunteer befriending service that supports older isolated people in the community by introducing them to a local volunteer who visits regularly. Our service can go a long way in bridging the gap between isolation and inclusion. I am so proud of our volunteers, they go the extra mile to make sure the person they visit feels heard, listened to, acknowledged and

Meeting Gorillas is not to be missed. For most of the year the members of Tetbury Camera Club are a happy lot, quite content to discuss, comment on and enjoy shots taken at local, or relatively local locations. There are times, though, when some of us are affected by a bit of David Attenborough envy and decide it would be good to head for the hills on the trail of something a bit more exotic - things like elephants, tigers, giraffes and even gorillas… And that’s exactly what two of the club’s

keenest camera fans have recently been up to. Around this time last year, Sandie Cox and Richard joined a dozen other members cruising on some of Bristol’s more scenic backwaters. Guided by two of the city’s most helpful and knowledgeable sailors, we were looking for interesting renovations, innovative architecture, colourful graffiti images and even on top of a couple of buildings, what appeared to be life-like fibreglass models of birds, sheep, a gorilla and probably the city’s most famous animal character, Gromit. Inspired by a keen interest in wildlife as well as photography, Sandie, Richard and

Tetbury Camera Club his wife and a couple of friends started this year by planning to leave these scenic sights behind and follow in Sir David’s footsteps to capture the real thing with a trip to Uganda and Rwanda. In their sights was a search for the steadily diminishing number of highland and lowland gorillas, which are now protected species in both countries. Once you have the necessary permits in your hand, the next hurdle is the small matter of personal protection from infections like yellow fever, a virus which can be caught from mosquito bites. It can be fatal to primates as well as humans and both countries demand advance sight of a valid certificate of inoculation before they will even allow entry. Looking for gorillas is obviously not what might be called ‘a walk in the park’, so is it worth it? According to Richard and Sandie the answer is definitely “Yes!” they told us: “Trailing the animals isn’t easy. The ground is very rough and hilly. It’s difficult to walk through the bush if you are trying to carry a camera and bag at the same time, and once the reservation wardens find a family of gorillas for you, there is a restriction of only one hour to try and take your pictures.

Hats off to the winner for the best ‘grown up’ pumpkin though – Chris, yours was truly a pumpkin in disguise… Thank you to all those who attended our Family fun day! It was a fabulous (albeit windy,) day - and the rain held off to allow all those attending to enjoy games, music, bouncy castle, food and more. Not only that, it raised an absolutely amazing £800 for playgroup! A great big thank you to all those involved in organizing it too – our committee and parents have been absolutely amazing in their fundraising efforts this year and we are so very grateful. We have a few other events coming up over the next couple of months, including our Winter Fayre this weekend at the Market House – we’re hoping lots of people will be out to browse and stop for a warm ‘top up’ and slice of something nice! Tetbury Nursery Playgroup The children are now becoming really excited about Christmas, so far they have performed their nativity play for the parents and made craft items to sell at our mini Christmas fete. The pre-school children will be taking their Christmas songs on the road and can be seen singing them outside Tesco on Wednesday 13th December at 10.00 am. We will have collecting buckets with us, so if anyone is in need of festive cheer please come along and support us and help raise funds for our windows.

Not only are the children using the glitter for all their Christmas creations, they are also using it to practice their mark making! A shallow tray of glitter is a good medium for children to use their fingers to form marks and letters in. The children will also get the opportunity to do some Christmas baking, including mince pies and biscuits. The Play and Stay group and crèche will also be doing some sparkly activities leading up to Christmas. Another event the children have taken part in is Children in Need, where the children made spotty biscuits, to fit in with the spotty theme. At the end of November, we did lots of activities around Thanksgiving,

smelt strongly of the aniseed used to thin the paint – and that the apprentices once cleaned portions of a dirty window, fooling their manager into believing that it was broken. The apprentices were supportive of one another too, and, if someone was out sick, they would help progress each other’s work so that the absent apprentice would get paid.

It seems a long time ago now, but in October we held our annual art sale in the Market Hall, which seemed to go well. Our organisers, Gill Ashley and Jenny Riley, chose a less-regimented layout of tables involving star-shaped arrangements around several of the central pillars. We do not record sales at this event, but a reasonable number of pictures were sold. This was Gill and Jenny’s last bit of organising and we would like to thank them for managing our exhibitions over the last two years.

We held a Christmas Card Competition on the 14th of November at the Old Manor House, Tetbury by kind invitation of the owners. Twelve of our members took part and the judging was still to be done when this article was submitted - so I can’t yet tell you who won. Looking forward, the only activity left this year is our Christmas Social on Wednesday the 13th December. As we approach the end of the year, we wish readers of our column a Happy Christmas and Good Health in 2018. More information

We had some difficulty with our November meeting when the expected demonstrator had to withdraw because of health problems. But one of our members, Allan Norwood, kindly stepped in and gave a talk mainly about his experiences working as an apprenticed ceramics painter for Royal Worcester. His artistic talents were encouraged by his father and art teacher - the latter urged him to apply to Royal Worcester, who accepted him for an apprenticeship.

Tetbury Theatre Group Unusually for this year, it was a wet morning… … when we left Tetbury for our October theatre trip. We were off to the Millennium theatre, Cardiff to see Slava’s Snowshow. The Millennium Theatre is a fantastic venue and it is really worth going there just to see it. We left Tetbury at 10.00 am, hopeful of a nice morning at Cardiff Bay and even though it was wet the time went very quickly. Some of us had coffee and then a leisurely lunch at one of the many eating places - others took a taxi to the city centre and shops. I went with friends to the Pierhead Building which is a Grade 1 listed building of the national Assembly for Wales. It stands as one of Cardiff ’s most familiar landmarks - built in 1897 as headquarters for the Bute Dock Company, whose original building burnt down in 1892. The Bute Dock Company was renamed the Cardiff Railway company in 1897, and the Pierhead became the administration office for the port of Cardiff in 1947. It was opened to the public in 2010 as a history museum and exhibition hall, and it is very impressive and interesting inside with beautiful tiles and ceilings. Outside it is built of terracotta bricks which came from Wrexham in North Wales. The architect was William Frame, who worked with William Bruges on Cardiff castle. The clock on the building is known as “Baby Big Ben.”

distinction had been made between the leaders of the mobs and the rest. Elizabeth Parker was singled out as a leader: “A woman, the only female prisoner, who had, by violent language and by every means in her power, been active in stimulating her companions to acts of outrage, and had even personally assisted with a large sledge hammer.” Along with other “leaders”, she was sentenced to be transported for seven years. Under cross-examination, Cole said he was the assistant overseer of the poor and collector of public taxes of the parish of Tetbury. He was married with one child. He went in to the inn at about 9 pm, and stayed about 2 hours, drinking in the parlour, with the landlord, Parker, and two others. He was not drunk, but he was “rather fresh.” He gave the prisoner no money. He saw Parker next morning at the “Prince and Princess” public house. He didn’t drink with her or give her any money. He did give her a shilling after she was committed. He never said that he would not have prosecuted her “if it was not for her own tongue”. (Presumably meaning he couldn’t trust her to keep her mouth shut.)

28 March, 1832. Daniel Cole was in the “Boat Inn” [Boot Inn?] in Tetbury, when Elizabeth came in. Cole “accompanied her down the yard”, where he stayed with her for about half an hour. The next morning, he realised that all his money was gone. One of his five pound notes was identified by him in a shop, where Parker had bought some items.

In her defence, Parker said that Cole had given her the money, and on the next day told her he did not care about the money, but was “apprehensive that he would lose his character as parish clerk.” Parker was found guilty, and the judge showed his disapproval of Cole’s conduct by not allowing his expenses as prosecutor to be waived. Although Cole had not been the only witness to give evidence against Parker at her first trial, it might be expected that he would have kept out of her way after she was pardoned and returned to Tetbury. Perhaps the parish officer was one of Elizabeth’s regular customers. Certainly he seems to have found her hard to resist when he was inebriated (despite her being missing two front teeth). Did she know this, and get him to “accompany her down the yard” with a view to stealing from him to get her revenge? It seems more likely that she knew that Cole had a great deal of money on him that night, and took her chances when she found him the worse for drink, hoping that if she was found out, he would not prosecute her, because of the damage it would do to his reputation. Perhaps she also thought that she could use her feminine wiles to persuade Cole not to prosecute her? If so, she was wrong, as she was sent to start a new life, in Tasmania. Beyond just his generous friendship and neighbourliness, Doug has held many offices in the South Cotswolds Rotary Club including that of President, and is the acting Secretary. In this capacity he as very active in running the Badminton Horseless event, at which this photograph was taken. As usual, Mary was at his side, doing all the catering, Doug also runs the Rotary Young Musician of the year competition, once again with the tireless Mary helping him very actively – and I know this is just a couple of the things they do.

A branch of “Men-inSheds” for Tetbury? A group of interested Tetbury Lions Club members have been investigating the setting up of a branch of Men-in-Sheds in Tetbury. They are happy to facilitate a group but unfortunately cannot run the organisation. Men-in-Sheds as a group started in Australia, and now has many branches throughout the UK and elsewhere. A “Men’s Shed” is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers members the chance to share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing, at their own pace, and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are

places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work. A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, marquetry, furniture renovation,) - but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car. Reclamation, reuse and restoration feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too… Although Sheds mostly attract older men, they can include men of any age, women and young people too. Whatever activities are, pursued the essence of a Shed is not a single building which some don’t have - but the network of

Tetbury Cares relationships between the members. The essence of Men-in Sheds is to appeal to men with a practical bent who are happy working with their hands to produce something useful. While they are working they feel relaxed and often talk freely to each other, building up a sense of camaraderie with the rest of the group. This reduces any sense of loneliness, isolation and gives many opportunities to provide support. You can find out more by having a look at the Men’s Shed organisation at ww.menssheds.org.uk In Tetbury, we have already had a presentation from Mark Weir, the organiser of the very successful Bourton-in-the water branch of MIS, and we have recently visited the MIS Nailsworth branch.
