Youthful Treasures With 2016 behind us, and with it, we hope, the relentless string of premature deaths of national and international treasures, I was startled to spot on social media today what struck me as a desperate headline: “See Cliff Richard live through 2017!” Good heavens, I thought, are people now so paranoid that they’re publicly rooting for the survival of their favourite celebrity? Could such an appeal really enhance one’s chances of escaping the Grim Reaper until 2018? I can think of more constructive tactics to keep a person feeling young and full of life, and I’m happy to share them here.

Age is Relative First, hang out with old people. By “old people”, I mean anyone who is at least twenty years older than yourself (because we’re all in our prime, aren’t we?) Accompanying my eighty-year-old aunt to my 100-year-old cousin’s funeral not only reassured me of my family’s strong genes but made me feel positively youthful. Secondly, marry someone older than you. My husband will reach his three score and ten a year before I have to start to wonder whether, in Paul McCartney’s immortal words, whether he’ll still need me when I’m 64. (Which echoes point #1 – hang out with Paul McCartney.) Thirdly, if you plan to change your name when you marry, pick a spouse whose moniker offers subliminal powers of

Finally, if you’re a writer, on the same principle that you can put someone in a novel and kill them, you can assume a younger persona and, in your head at least, spend quite a lot of your life pretending you’re them. I’m currently writing a series of novels, the Sophie Sayers Village Mysteries (yes, the name’s a tribute to the late great Dorothy L Sayers, creator of Lord Peter Wimsey), in which the eponymous heroine is 25. The stories are narrated in her voice, and I’m rather enjoying being 25 again. Naturally her love interest is 32. (The first book, Best Murder in Show, will be launched in April.)

As it is the first opportunity I have had in 2017, may I, on behalf of Tetbury Lions, wish you all a Happy New Year?

In my December article, I mentioned our project to collect as many old or unwanted pairs of glasses as we can. Arrangements have been made with our two Opticians in Tetbury (Haines & Smith and Poole’s,) and also with Tesco, to receive specs for Lions to collect and then to deliver to the Lions International re-cycling centre. Please do have a look in your pockets and drawers at home and see if you can help. It would be rewarding if Tetbury could provide a significant quantity towards this appeal. The collection points will be available at the above locations right through February.

In my role as President, I had the honour on behalf of the Lions Club to receive a lovely Christmas Card from the children and staff at St Mary’s Primary School. Our special thanks go to Paulina, who drew and coloured an original interpretation of the Christmas story on the front of the card.

May I also thank you for your generous support for our fund-raising events in December? Our bucket collections for Ben, both at both Tesco and in the town, raised an incredible total of just over £1,500. Thank you to everyone who supported us with this donation. Our traditional Christmas raffle also raised a record sum and around 20 lucky winners enjoyed their pre-Christmas surprises.

Lions 200 Club To borrow a catchphrase from that other lottery organisation, “you`ve got to be in it to win it,” and the photograph attached shows one of our very own Tetbury residents Mr Neil Tunley, receiving his winner`s cheque from Lion Colin Poole. The Lion’s 200 Club is simply a lottery licensed by Cotswold District Council and administered wholly by the Lions Club of Tetbury. Funds raised through this lottery are then used to help fulfil requests

considered suitable by the Club itself. Support continues to be given to a range of individuals, societies and sports clubs within our town. Membership of the 200 Club is fixed at £13 per year. Following a recent review of the monthly draw, future winnings will comprise four prizes of £20 in eight months of the year, and one prize of £100 in each of the remaining months.

Cycle Path Extension Opens The Tetbury Cycle Path that runs from the site of the old Tetbury station along the track of the former branch line has been extended. This was a result of a decision made in Cheltenham Magistrates Court in November. A footpath on Mike Tucker’s land was closed and he dedicated the section of the old railway line that crosses his land as a public bridleway which can be used as a cycle path. The new bridleway has doubled the length of the existing cycle path and can also be used by horse riders, walkers and runners. The cycle path used to come to a dead end at the far side of Preston Park and the new extension allows people to continue to Newnton Hill.

The Next Steps Mike Tucker has done a good job of clearing the undergrowth and making a new ramp up to the road, however the new bridleway’s surface is quite muddy and rough. The next stage is for the Trust to apply for grants to lay a crushed limestone surface like the original cycle/foot path. This is a multi-user surface that is ideal for horses as well as pedestrians and cyclists. With a good surface the flat railway line without styles and few gates will be suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters etc., allowing disabled access to the countryside.

History When the Tetbury to Kemble branch line closed 50 years ago, the rails were taken up and the track bed was used by local people for walking, riding and cycling. British Rail subsequently sold off the line to local landowners. The original cycle/foot path was built 17 years ago, after the Town Council bought a short stretch of the old line. The Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust has been working to extend the cycle path ever since. Ten years ago, the Trust

The next section of the old railway line is on the Duchy of Cornwall land. It is hoped the Duchy will also agree to dedicate their trackbed as a bridleway. This would allow people to reach the Trouble House and would effectively triple the length of the original cycle path. Paul Lockley

The circumstances giving rise to my involvement in these matters are created by similar occurrences - namely a change in the family balance, resulting from a specified event. Imagine there is a strict farmer called Eric, who has three sons and dominates the running of the farm. His sons fear him and his wife, who is another strong character. Eric gets in a rage, accuses one of his sons of being spineless, has an apoplectic fit and drops dead. Some other member of the family has to run the farm and the other members of the family have trouble mentally adjusting to these circumstances.

In the early days following such a death, as a solicitor you are involved in coping with this change and in helping parties come to terms with the changes, when the family has not. Imagine that instead of dying, Eric has a heart attack with the onset of dementia. Eric needs to make a lasting power of attorney so that another person can conduct his financial affairs. Again, the family will have to adjust. If Eric really has lost the capacity to manage his affairs, he may not have the capacity to appoint an attorney and so some member of the family or other person must apply for a deputyship order to run his affairs, a much trickier thing to do than register a power of attorney and at a considerably greater cost.

After nearly a decade of writing for the Advertiser, it is sometimes difficult to think what to write, but, after lots of positive feedback (thank you Basil and Jeremy,) I am encouraged to continue my updates on what Tetbury in Bloom is up to. But first, a confession! I am not a natural gardener as my neighbour, Jo, reminds me. It is my love

of flowers, (inherited from my Gran and my parents) and owning a house and not a flat or living in student accommodation that got me interested in gardening. Once I joined the Tetbury in Bloom team, originally to help with publicity and organisation, I got hooked and the rest, as they say, is history. Gran always had flowers in the house, even if it was only a simple arrangement of daises in a sherry glass on the kitchen worktop. Better still is to see flowers in their natural habitat.

Tetbury in Bloom 5,500 bulbs to the flowerbeds and green spaces around the town; a mix of daffodils, narcissus, grape hyacinths and tulips. This is not everyone’s favourite job but the beautiful displays make all the hard work worthwhile.

At this time of year, I enjoy the anticipation of looking for the first sign of the snowdrops poking through, which herald the end of the winter. Last autumn we added another

Tetbury Art Society Articles for the February issue of the Tetbury Advertiser are written in mid-January and I always find it a difficult job: quite apart from my settling back to normal after the Christmas and New Year revelries, news of what happened in December seems so long ago and 2017 has hardly begun at the time of writing yet by the time you read this, it is too late to wish you a Happy New Year! So, as far as 2016 is concerned, let me just say that it was a full year with the activities for our monthly meetings arranged by Jackie Sapp, exhibitions and a sale arranged by Gill Ashley and Jenny Riley, a trip to Oxford and publicity arranged by Barry Barnes and several socials arranged by Barry and Chris Lippiatt. Sue Russell managed our membership and Hazel Cudmore managed our funds. I offer a big thank you to them all. We were able to make donations to Tetbury Hospital, Longfield and the Goods Shed Regeneration Project. And now, in January, things are quieter. Members are doubtless busy painting in readiness for our Spring Exhibition, Hazel

is preparing the accounts ready for our AGM, Nicki Heenan is putting the finishing touches to our programme for 2017 and I am preparing the documentation for the AGM and looking around for people to fill a few vacancies on the committee. Then on the evening of Wednesday 1st March, Nicki herself will give a demonstration of working with cold wax and dried pigment with which I am not familiar – it sounds interesting.

The Council take seriously the care of trees on the land that they own, and an annual tree survey is carried out to determine the work required to maintain them. We carry out any required work as quickly as possible. Being in a Conservation Area also means that the Tree Officers at Cotswold District keep a watching eye too, so owners of land on which trees grow cannot just decide to cut them down, or even do work on their trees without getting permission

If they’re deemed to be dead, diseased or dying there’s no hesitation in allowing an owner to take the tree down - as well as replacing with a new one, but penalties for not getting permission can be quite severe, so abiding by the regulations is prudent.

Cooks Pool Recently we had “a situation” in Cooks Pool. As you know the fields nearby comprise one large building site right now, with up to 250 homes being constructed. The area is a hive of building activity. Two eagle-eyed Tetbury residents became aware of contamination in the Pool, from sand coming down from the building site, as the waterlogged area was cleared by the builders using pumps. Quick action by these residents alerted the Council, the Environment Agency, Bristol Water and the head office of Miller Homes, who I must say were very cooperative in resolving the situation. Their environmental experts were dispatched to site to carry out water quality surveys, their procedures for dealing with surface water on the site were strengthened to cope with the situation, and within a few days the water in the Pool started to clear, with the amount of sand residue coming from the site greatly reduced. Our resident colony of moorhens continues to thrive and enjoy living in and around Cooks Pool because of the great team effort to resolve the situation. This just shows how important it is to notify the Council of environmental matters which you are not happy with, so action can be taken

Just before Christmas HRH The Prince of Wales celebrated with us the completion of the main restoration works of the Goods Shed. It was a very happy occasion and many residents were invited to the ceremony. Even more people came to the following night’s Carol Service, organised by the Rail Lands Trust, and work is now continuing to fully fit out the Shed, to create a wonderful town asset. In recent months, we’ve been concentrating on improving the immediate area around the Goods Shed and up the drive toward Wiltshire Bridge. This year our focus will be on improving the area away from the Goods Shed down the old railway track toward Preston Park. We have received a grant from Tesco to fund this work, to include new picnic furniture. Hopefully by late spring we shall have completed these works, and the whole of the rail lands will benefit from the improvements.

Tetbury Community Bus A fantastic and muchneeded new initiative has been launched – for a Tetbury Community Bus. The aim is simple - for Tetbury to have its own minibus, which can be used by anyone. Originally the idea came when the local CVS service went into liquidation, and Tetbury lost its Dial-a-Ride bus. The intention is to acquire a bus which will cater for eight to ten people, and have fully accessible wheelchair facilities. Primarily, the idea was to have a replacement Dial-a-Ride bus, but in talking to people it has become apparent that there would be a far wider need for this type of bus -since many are concerned about relying on the existing bus service to get to towns such as Cirencester, Stroud, Malmesbury and so on - and even to and from Kemble station.

Friends of Tetbury Community Transport This recently formed association has been established to provide sponsored trips for the residents of Tetbury… …in conjunction with Community Connexions (CC) and local volunteers. To date we have received sponsorship from Tetbury Feoffees, Tetbury Lions and Tetbury Town Council to whom we are extremely grateful. Initially there will be three trips per month, the first of which took place in January. All residents of Tetbury who register with CC are entitled to apply for the limited number of places available and bookings are taken via CC (0345 680 5029). Passengers will be asked to give a voluntary anonymous donation to FTCT and receipts will be used to go towards future trips, details of which will be published in the Tetbury section of the Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Standard. To provide this service the Friends are reliant not only on the sponsors, but also on CC who are providing the bus on very reasonable terms, and on the volunteer drivers/escorts who give up their time for no reward. Perception and Deception An intriguing title. But first, David Hannam returned on the 17th of November to share more tales of his broadcasting career. Reminding us of his early life as an outside

TV producer in Northern Ireland, he recalled programmes including ceilidhs, national competitions and chat shows. Amusing stories from behind the scenes flowed. After a two-year secondment to Malawi, David had managed BBC Leicester and BBC Commercial Radio, all involving

He then turned his skills to reviewing historical news programmes, writing books and reading Bible stories for children David also explained how the BBC had moved over recent years from the high moral principles of Lord Reith to prioritising performance standards. He felt the chairmen of BBC broadcast debates today tended to be biased and current affairs interviewers excessively aggressive. His audience agreed. Then we perceived - and were deceived by author and artist Aylwin Sampson, on the 2nd of December. He demonstrated how the most perceptive of human organs, the eye, could be the most unreliable. He showed how we react to what we see, making assumptions based on very limited information, and then seeing what we expect to see. He then widened his talk into other areas, but poor light conditions prevented some of his rapidly shown illustrations from being fully absorbed. Nonetheless, it was a fascinating discourse by an erudite speaker, supported by anecdotes and observations which gave us food for thought. Then, on the 15th 0f December, the unexpected happened. Our speaker did not arrive. Undaunted, Denis Cartwright immediately delved into his memory with remarkable recall to tell us about different types of farming he had encountered. Tales of watching ploughing with two steam traction engines as a schoolboy were followed by stories of potato-picking, harvest camps and Percheron horses. Stooking and stacking were key skills, many now mechanised. Descriptions followed of rice-growing in Malaya in the 1950’s and 1960’s, ensuring food did not reach the communist guerrillas. Denis then turned to the very inefficient collective farming he had seen in communist Czechoslovakia, and talked about the western United States, with their irrigation problems and the salinity of the Californian soils. Finally, Denis described recent practices on a local farm, commenting especially on the strong relationships seen between the farm staff and their stock. We could only be grateful for his wideranging and entertaining reminiscences, which completed for us another year of enjoyable talks - safely seeing us through to launching this year’s programme.

The Children have returned after their Christmas break full of tales of their Christmas experiences.

The children had a busy lead-up to Christmas at playgroup. The pre-school children had a couple of visits to St Mary’s Primary school, one for forest school and the other to watch last year’s children take part in their nativity play.

It was lovely that they not only talked about the presents received, but also about their family and who they spent their time with.

At playgroup, we did our nativity play and then the pre-school children went to Tesco to sing Christmas songs for the customers and staff.

Prior to the holidays, we had a fundraising event “Ladies Pre-Christmas Shopping Evening” and raised £290. We would like to thank Clare Farthing for organising it and the following businesses in Tetbury for donating prizes for the raffle: Tetbury Hardware, The Priory Inn, French Grey and Jesse Smiths.

Now the tree has gone and the decorations are down, the children are busy with their craft work to make the room look colourful again. This half term we are looking at snow and ice, colours and celebrating Chinese New Year, which is always popular with the children, especially the food!

The pre-school children continue with their preparation for big school; they will be getting changed into a P.E kit and the letter basket will be starting shortly.

Bingo Our Christmas bingo was a big success and we would like to thank everyone who is involved in organising both the fortnightly and Christmas bingo. The bingo is open to everyone and the prizes are fresh meat from the butchers, chocolate, biscuits etc. There are complimentary tea and biscuits during the evening and a raffle during the tea break. If anyone would like to come along, please feel free to do so. The crèche and “play and stay” are up and running again. In the crèche, the children have done some lovely snow themed pictures. At play and stay the children have been making calendars. Now that the toddler room and play group rooms have been redecorated we are able to hire out the room for small parties and meetings.

Thank you to all those who made this possible, either by giving or helping, and of course thank you to Tesco for providing the opportunity.

Tetbury Food Bank Once again, due to generous donations of food for the Food Bank, in December we fed many Tetbury people, 65 on one day, with not only basic food but also with

festive treats. Amazing, and not possible without your generosity. We would not want our clients to go hungry for the rest of the year, so donations of food for the food bank can be left at any of the three Tetbury churches and very often Tesco has a trolley in store to receive gifts.

Vulnerable Syrian Refugees St Marys’ Church decided to raise money to support a family of Vulnerable Syrian Refugees, moving into a house in Tewkesbury. At least one member of the family has acute health problems and all have been traumatised by their experiences. The house they are moving into needs renovation including a new staircase and kitchen. Avonvale FC Despite multiple cancellations over the festive season, Avonvale United continued their good form. The U13’s side have had only one game, in which they held a strong Ramsbury side to a 1-1 draw. Vale started with lots of possession and chances, but Ramsbury began to catch them on the break. The game finished honours even - a great game of football, enjoyed by players, coaches and spectators alike.

With 5 minutes left on the clock, Theo Martin slotted Jack Sprange through on goal and Vale’s top scorer fired home with what looked to be his most important goal of the season. The U14’s enjoyed a 14-1 thrashing of FC Abbeymeads. After barely two minutes played, Freddie gave Vale the lead. 1-0. Freddie then doubled Vale’s advantage with his second of the game. With half time fast approaching, Freddie had already bagged six! Their first game of the new year saw Avonvale emerge 3-1 victors over Malmesbury. The two sides matched each other stride for stride, but Malmesbury put a fine ball through that beat Vale’s defence and left a misplaced Jack only able to look on as the ball sailed into the back of the net. Ben managed to bring the home side back into the game though, and shortly after half time, Freddie calmly struck the ball past the Malmesbury keeper to secure a long awaited 2-1 lead. Shortly before the end, Orlando launched a cracking cross to find Freddie, who struck the ball well to give Vale the 3-1 buffer they needed. The U18’s remain joint top of their league after a few impressive results over the holiday. They started off with an impressive 9-2 victory over Coleshill. Vale beat Marlborough 2-0 away from home. Good play by Adam Gale and Cristian Goodwin saw George Dandridge released on goal and he finished neatly for Vale’s first. Confident passing between Theo Martin and Dandridge released Johnson to tuck the ball past the Marlborough keeper for the second. The men’s team started with a 3-1 loss in the cup to McCadam. Vale were without key players all over the pitch for various reasons. It looked set to be a tough afternoon for Vale. A well-worked passage of play earned Vale a corner halfway through the first half and from the resulting corner, Kieron Witchard picked up the ball outside the box, turned his man and curled a left footed shot right into the top corner. One can pick up and rebroadcast your Wi-Fi - the other uses home plug technology to send the Internet around your house using your existing mains wiring. Patient Participation Group We will be seeing the return of some familiar faces to the surgery to support us over the coming months. I am sure that many of you will remember Dr Kath Jones and Dr Sana Shaikh who were registrars at the surgery as well as Dr Veronica Sawicki who has also worked here before. I am sure that Tetbury will give all three of them a warm welcome. There is a move to provide more support in the community, which is much appreciated as Tetbury is so far away from major hospitals. Although some people may still have to see their consultant from time to time, GPs have a role in our care too. All of those with chronic diseases will be getting a letter inviting them to attend a clinic for an annual review. There is a twist though, they will be spreading this out across the year, according to the month of your birthday. This includes those with COPD and Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as other chronic conditions. Even if you see your consultant regularly, your GP would like to see you too.

The first step is to make sure you are registered as a Carer with the surgery, then you can book your 30-minute appointment. Your GP might know you are a carer but you still have to register formally as a Carer. The Patient Participation Group is working closely with the Social Prescriber and the Frailty Service to help make sure that the needs of carers are being met, so if you have any feedback on the carer’s service or want to make any suggestions, please contact us. It isn’t too late to get the flu vaccine if you haven’t had it yet. You have until March to have one, and don’t forget the shingles and pneumococcal vaccines if you qualify. If you are not sure you can check the criteria on the blog or ring the surgery and ask. It isn’t easy to know what to do when we get ill. Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group has a website and app that can help called ASAP http://www.asapglos.nhs.uk It has been running for nearly a year now and has proved very successful. You can search for your condition or for the service you are looking for and it will give you the up-todate information about what to do.

And while we are on the subject of communication, please make sure that you keep your details with the surgery up to date, especially your phone numbers. More than a dozen of us set off to London towards the end of the year to investigate the dramatic architectural changes that are transforming the area around Kings Cross and the square mile of the City. Anyone who has been surprised by the amount of development taking place in Tetbury would come back from these parts of the capital amazed by just how places can be completely transformed when developers, diggers and tower cranes really get going at full speed! Around Kings Cross, areas that were once among the most dusty and desolate in the centre of the city are now the focus of architectural showpiece offices for high tech companies such as Google and plush apartments for executives in the City. Closer to home, in late December, there were photo opportunities here in Tetbury when Prince Charles came to take a look at the progress of development at the former GWR engine shed, which will soon reopen as the town’s showpiece arts centre. No tower cranes needed there, but the work that has been done is in its own way just as creative and dramatic. The visit was important enough to attract not just photographers from our own local papers, but also Arthur Edwards of the Sun, arguably the country’s best known Royal photographer. If you look carefully at television coverage when there is a royal visit at home or abroad, you’ll usually spot Arthur in the background. He’s been covering Royal events since the mid 1970’s and is responsible for some of the best pictures taken of the Royal family over the last 40 years. Having said that, he remains one of the best-liked and most

Tetbury Goods Shed Last year ended in an incredibly successful fashion for The Goods Shed. Three days before Christmas, we greeted His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales to the venue - and we need to thank the Avening Silver Band for the music which The Prince of Wales enjoyed whilst meeting the wellwishers who turned out to see him. His visit marked the official handover of the arts centre from the builders, Stonewood, to Tetbury Town Council and it was an historic occasion. because The Prince of Wales was first involved in the project over 20 years ago, at a meeting at the Royal Oak pub. How far we have come! The Goods Shed will now be leased to The Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust from the Council and it’s our responsibility to fit

it out and turn it into a working arts centre. We hope to open in the Spring so, as our Chairman, Will Cook, mentioned during the Royal Visit it’s now, “full steam ahead”. Our focus will be on fundraising, and organising events for 2017. If you’re able to help out with either, we’d be very grateful for your contact. Following His Royal Highness’ visit, we witnessed a second full house the very next day, the 23rd of December, when people packed into The Goods Shed for our annual Carol Service. It was standing room only as hundreds of festive fans turned out to sing their hearts out and enjoy mince pies and mulled wine. Thank you to everyone who came along. It was a real joy to see The Goods Shed busy, noisy and being used. Such a contrast to last year’s Carol Service in a dilapidated shell! And then we welcomed in 2017 with our regular New Year’s Day walk. Despite the

rain and the mud, many walkers turned up to try the new extension to the old railway bed bridleway. We do hope a lot of people make use of the footpath this year. It’s thanks to the landowner, Mike Tucker, that we’re now able to walk, run, cycle and horse ride as far as Newnton Hill. And we much appreciate the funds raised by the Mid Cotswold Tracks and Trails Group and the Heaven of the South cycling event to encourage this. Finally, we are on the lookout for an Arts Centre Manager to help us move things forward. Tetbury WI his slow return to health, regaling us with stories of his bizarre attempts to escape from hospital, since he was convinced that there was nothing wrong with him. Having recovered sufficiently, trying to find a job of work proved very difficult as he couldn’t drive due to still having seizures, and public transport never fitted in with his shift patterns. Having a love of wood and making wooden replica golf courses, he thought he would try to make and sell these. After attending several woodwork fairs selling magazines, he came up with the idea of making and selling stick helicopters, in kit form, which have proved quite successful. Nick obtained a pedlar’s licence and now, with his bike, tours various woodcraft fairs and towns selling them. Having previously been a successful writer and publisher, he has now started to write another book. It was a most inspirational and humorous talk, as Nick described his fight to regain some normality in his life and the long road he had travelled. Our next meeting will be on the 13th of February, when our speaker will be Matthew Sprotson, whose topic will be the Life and Songs of George Formby – 7.30 pm at the Dolphin Hall. Tetbury Theatre Group Welcome to 2017! Before we embark on this year’s programme. I’ll briefly refer to the final outings of 2016. In November, the Group went to Bristol to see “Billy Elliot.” The acting was brilliant and so was the dancing. The performances by the young children were amazing and the whole play both moving and emotional. In December, we were back in Bristol at the Colston Hall for a concert “Sing Noel” by Bristol Cathedral Choir School. What a range of musical talent! From the pure voices of the choristers to steel pans and a full orchestra. Fabulous. And now for this year. In January, there was the AGM, a review of which will be in the March Advertiser, and on February the 9th we are at a matinee of “The Play that goes Wrong” at the Everyman in Cheltenham. The coach will leave the Chipping Car Park in the morning, so there will be time for shopping and lunch before the performance. Apparently, this is “... a highly

physical and very silly comedy [featuring the] cast and crew of the “Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society” attempting to stage a 1920’s murder mystery - and everything that can go wrong, does.”

Wacky Races It is with great pleasure that we can confirm that the 2017 Wacky Races will take place as usual on Bank Holiday Monday 1st May. We have reviewed the aspects of the course that gave concern in 2016, in particular with regard to the safe movement of the public between the Chipping car park and the Millennium Green, on what is a very narrow pavement. This year we’re going to be erecting 10ft x 6ft Heras fencing all the way down the middle of Chipping Street, allowing spectators more than double the room they have had in previous years. It will reduce the track width for racers, but eliminate several “pinch points” for spectators while also reducing the number of straw bales that need to be placed on the course. There is one pinch point of about twenty feet that we cannot eliminate near the “Druids Hill” corner - the final sharp turn toward the finish line. Here, the fencing will be screened so that racing cannot be viewed and this will discourage spectators from standing at this point to watch - although there will still be plenty of other opportunities to view the corner from this area. From the final turn to the finish line there will no longer be spectator access from Cirencester Road. This section has always been congested, as the gap only allows single file movement in either direction. It’s been the cause of several safety issues - people smoking near the bales, children sitting on the bales with their legs on the course, people standing on the bales, and so on. To get from the Chipping car park to Millennium Green this year, then, there will be two options: a) Through the long stay car park past the Goods Shed, and b) From Chipping car park, back up past the Snooty Fox and down Gumstool Hill.

At this meeting, there were some serious matters brought to light. which Becky Parish from the GCCG will be looking at in a joint NHS England investigation. Becky Parish is anxious to hear from patients and former employees about anything, good or bad, so she can complete a well-rounded and balanced investigation. If anyone wants to pass on information locally and in complete confidence - even anonymously - they can also contact Alison Hesketh, who would then pass on the information. There is respect and admiration for many of the doctors and staff at the surgery, both past and present. We’re all aware that you can’t please all the people all the time, but when matters are of a life or death nature - often quite literally – it is responsible, indeed imperative, that any concerns are brought forward. I am sure that any organisation would welcome any constructive criticism so that the service offered maintains its excellence. Whatever the outcome of the investigation, we will always have good doctors to see and who will take good care of us, in Tetbury. Romney House Surgery Petition Thank you to those 880 patients who signed the petition… …both to express appreciation for all the care Dr Katharina Nehrig had given to patients of Romney House Surgery, and to try to persuade her to change her mind. However, she felt that she could not do so unless the problems which she had experienced at the surgery had been addressed and they hadn’t, so very sadly she saw her last patient on the 10th of December. This does not mean that the petition was a failure – it most definitely was not! Copies were sent to the Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (GCCG), NHS England, the Secretary of State for Health, the General Medical Council and our MP. This has resulted in numerous meetings and letters and much work going on behind the scenes to resolve the problems. Our MP has provided a press release on the situation which some of you may have read. An independent investigation is being carried out jointly by the GCCG and NHS England. The easiest resolution would have been a second surgery, giving choice for patients and staff alike, but, unfortunately, we have been advised by the GCCG that patient numbers in Tetbury do not warrant

a second surgery. It is therefore hoped that the investigation will bring about an urgent resolution to the problems at Romney House which have resulted in staff resignations.

Due to the very generous donations received… …from individuals, legacies and gifts from other charitable organisations, Tetbury Hospital has been able to invest over £170,000 in the Hospital in 2016. It was a busy year! The lift was upgraded, the staffroom and Day Surgery Unit kitchen was refurbished, new chairs suitable for the elderly and larger patients were purchased for the outpatient’s department, air-conditioning was added to the Minor Injuries Unit, additional computers have been bought and the physiotherapy department has been refurbished. More blood pressure monitors and podiatric saws and drills were purchased, along with three surgical trolleys, new operating lights, a phototherapy machine, an anaesthetic machine and a new dermatoscope to magnify skin lesions.

New Anaesthetic Machine Thanks to a very generous anonymous donation the Hospital was able to buy a replacement anaesthetic machine. They

were also able to invest in additional surgical equipment for bone surgery and upgrade three of their surgical trolleys to electric ones.

New Phototherapy Service The Hospital has bought a phototherapy booth to complement its dermatology service. Patients who suffer from eczema and other chronic skin conditions will undergo a prescribed light therapy programme that will relieve their symptoms and improve their skin condition. This type of treatment is prescribed when oral and topical medications have not been effective. Three nurses have received specialist training and the service will ‘go-live’ in January 2017. This project had the added bonus of refurbishing the physiotherapy department which formed part of the enabling works for the booths installation.

Tetbury Hospital Newsletter donations this year meant that new state of the art theatre lights could be bought. This light has the added safety benefit of a battery back-up, so in the event of a power cut there will be no impact on the theatre light for the milliseconds it takes the Hospital’s generator to kick into action. On the first Monday morning back at School, the Hawks Class (y3/4) visited Cirencester’s Corinium Museum to discover more about the Romans, which is their topic for this term. Avening Primary School Flying further into the future, the Kestrels class (y1/2) are asking the question ‘Can it fly?’ as their term topic and will be exploring everything to do with flight and paying a visit to Kemble airport to see some real aircraft in action. January wouldn’t be January in our School without our annual trip to Birmingham’s NEC arena, to take part in the “Young Voices” concert. Each year, we take our Young Voices choir, comprised of pupils from years 4,5 & 6, to the NEC, where they join thousands of other school children, a live orchestra, conductor and professional singers, to perform a fantastic medley of songs ranging from soul classics to pop hits. Watch out for details on how it went in next month’s issue! It didn’t take long for our Avening sports stars to get back into shape after the Christmas break, with a fantastic performance by our girls’ football team at a girls’ football tournament in Cirencester during our second week back. The girls showed tremendous skill and team work, and came 4th out of 8 teams overall! FOAS have plenty of fundraising events planned for the coming year which will kick off with a quiz night in the Village hall. Other events throughout the year include a race night, the Avening Bear Hunt and the Summer Fete, which this year will be held on a Friday evening.

Christmas in Tetbury A Wonderful Time How beautiful the town looked back in December! The new tree decorations on Gumstool Hill added beautifully to the displays. Di put it so very well saying how the classic white lights “gave a magical quality to the town.” The evening of Thursday 1st December was cold but dry, drawing large crowds for the annual switch-on ceremony. Mark Cummings (broadcaster with Radio Gloucester), Masha Weerasekara (lucky pupil from Saint Mary’s Primary School), the Town Crier and Santa were on hand to entertain the crowds. It was even broadcast live on the radio.

Whilst presenting for the role of Forest Green Rovers Ambassador, Grace Purnell stated that she wanted to get more girls playing football and hoped to run a club.

A little while later, Grace went on to lead the club and at a recent girls football festival in Cirencester, the team won! The lifeskills that are learned through team sports, such as football, really do develop far more balanced individuals.

They allow for the development of character and resilience, wellbeing and success in our learners whilst having fun at the same time. We pride ourselves on having the courage to be the best that we can be and share our passion and talents at St Marys. Whether this is achieved through meditation and mindfulness in our Yoga club, learning language and culture in French Club or through the perseverance and stamina gained in Cross Country Club; we are determined to give anything a go! The provision of activities we offer is something that we value enormously and we believe, must come from the children themselves. Our very active School Council regularly conducts surveys to find out if there are any other hobbies we could offer and also looks at the uptake of each club. The children at St Marys receive a wide range of interests and we encourage all staff and parents to help with our out of school offerings.

This term, the children in Y4-6 attended ‘Young Voices’, the largest school choir concert in the world. Hundreds of schools came together to celebrate their musical talents accompanied by a full live band, backing singers and an internationally acclaimed conductor. It is one of the most exciting and memorable musical experiences a child can have. We managed to take a whopping 60 children on the coach to Birmingham! A tiring day and night for the teachers but well worth it! The evening was uplifting and it was amazing to see the children grow so much in confidence, self-esteem and enthusiasm. Welcome to 2017 at Puddle Ducks! We are excited to be back after the Christmas break and have lots of activities and games planned for the coming weeks. However, first we turn back for a moment to the end of last year as we must mention a couple of events which rounded off the term for us. Our Nativity play this year was attended by every single ‘Puddle Duck’ and supported by many parents, grandparents and extended families which was lovely. All staff were so proud of the children who sang traditional carols so beautifully in the lovely setting of St. Saviour’s Church, by kind permission of The Churches Conservation Trust. Thank you to Reverend Poppy for leading our play with a prayer and for coming in to Puddle Ducks to see

the children and tell the Christmas story to them. We were also very lucky that Father Christmas himself found the time during his busiest time of year to visit the children to deliver some special parcels! On the last day of term we walked to St. Mary’s School where Mr. Knight was waiting to lead a special Forest School session for us. We were able to explore the woodland area, play in a den, hunt for bugs, watch a very bold squirrel and toast marshmallows on a bonfire before heading back to Puddle Ducks for our big Christmas party! Many thanks to Mr. Knight and St. Mary’s School for inviting us. Now though a new year awaits and the Spring Term is always a busy one! January sees the start of our extra afternoon sessions held especially for pre-schoolers who will be leaving us in July to head off

Puddle Ducks to big school. The afternoons are more structured and carefully planned to teach the children some of the skills they will need in September and lead to a smooth transition for them. The sessions will tie in with our weekly topic as we all begin to explore letters and sounds in more depth. Puddle Ducks is situated at the back of the Dolphins Hall where we run weekdays, term-time only from 9.15am-12.15pm with an optional lunch club until 1.15pm. We are a fully inclusive and holistic setting, welcoming all children aged between 2 years and school age. Pre-school afternoon sessions this year are held on a Wednesday until 2.45pm. Don’t forget Ducklings, our baby and toddler group on Fridays 1.302.45pm. Our pizzas continue to be popular through the post-Christmas period and our wood oven does great justice to the authentic Cotswold ingredients. The internal dome acts like a convection oven, reaching temperatures of 400° centigrade. The embers always burn, so once the breakfast chef has finished baking her bread in the cooler morning temperatures, our pizza chef rakes and builds the fire so that it reaches its maximum for lunch service. Cotswold Voluntary Wardens Tetbury Old Railway The old railway route has now been opened as a footpath/bridleway/cycleway beyond Preston Park as far as the Newnton Hill Road, following a hearing in the Magistrate’s Court to make it all official. The Cotswold Wardens have done quite a bit of clearance of the route and I have waymarked the route. Thank you to the landowner, Mike Tucker, for supplying his contractors to complete the route clearance and to install the gates and fencing. The route is fenced clear of the fields, so please close all gates behind you. It makes a very pleasant path, and I have seen many people using it. It is hoped to extend the railway path further, to the Trouble House, very soon.

Since more clearance will be done by the Wardens here, to make it suitable for a cycleway. This will fulfil an aim of the Rail Lands Trust – it’s been a good year for them, with the opening of the Goods Shed. In return, the footpath across the field beyond Preston Park toward Larkhill is now closed, but walkers can still reach the Larkhill crossroads by using the railway line as far as Little Larkhill Cottage – and then across the field to the crossroads. I have waymarked this also.

Greenway Cycleway at Cam We have also been involved with doing a lot of brushcutting and clearance alongside the M5 motorway near Cam. This is overgrown with bramble, eight feet high. Clearance is required to form the Greenway – a scheme to link various paths and a section of old railway line at Cam, Gossington and Slimbridge. At Slimbridge

it will link with the existing long-distance cycleway. One aim is to facilitate cycling to school at Rednock, from the outlying villages.

Snowdrops at Newark Park In December, we were asked by the National Trust to use brushcutters to clear many of the slopes around the garden at Newark Park of intrusive brambles, bracken and rosebay willowherb. We hope this will improve the spectacular display of snowdrops.

Hedge laying at King’s Stanley We have spent several sessions hedge laying alongside a footpath and lane at King’s Stanley, and replacing two stiles on the route.

News from St Marys’ Church

to Sir William Romneys. St Marys’ Church sponsors our Youth Worker, Mandie Winbow, to work with the young people in school when they need some loving support and encouragement - from mentoring to running a Diners’ Club to build cooking skills and confidence. She does a wonderful job!

Here’s a nice story. A mum notices that the storm clouds are forming mid-afternoon, and is worried about her seven-year-old daughter who will be walking home from her primary school around the corner. Deciding to meet her, the mother finds her daughter walking nonchalantly along, stopping to smile whenever lightning flashed. Seeing her mother, the little girl runs to her, explaining happily: “All the way home, God’s been taking my picture!” Children can make us laugh – and bring us up short, can’t they? They have their own take on things, and can help us all to see things differently, or afresh. I always find that having to explain things to children helps me to sort out my thoughts too … especially when it comes to God! We’re delighted at St Marys’ Church that we now have a flourishing weekly Sunday School, “Little Fishes”. We’ve got a new Little Fishes’ room, and they meet every Sunday during our main 9.30 service (except the first Sunday of the month). They chat about a Bible story and do craft activities to help understand what it means for us. On Sunday 12th February, for example, we are focussing on God’s law of love, and decorating heart-shaped boxes to fill with chocolates and give to someone we love.

Then, on the first Sunday of the month, we usually have a baptism. All the children get involved in blowing bubbles as the child is baptised … we say the bubbles show we are surrounding them with our love and our prayers. The children also have Baptism activity books to fill out to help them think about what is going on. It asks: what’s your favourite bit of the service? This is one answer and picture …

So that tells you a little bit about what we are doing with children and young people. But whether you’re young or old, don’t forget Pancake Tuesday on 28th February. Then next day – Ash Wednesday – marks the beginning of Lent with our special Ash Wednesday service at 7pm on Wednesday 1st March. More in the next edition - until then, with love and prayers, Poppy. The weapon miraculously misfired and after a fierce twenty minute struggle Sergeant Pegler, who served 16 years as the Marylebone Court Gaoler, bravely disarmed the man. After 28 years in the Metropolitan Police, the retired Sergeant Pegler was awarded 25 National Savings Certificates and the Kings Police Medal for bravery on February 14th 1928. Sergeant Pegler’s parents lived in Cotton Lane, Tetbury, and his brother lived in Silver Street.

The first meeting of HOTS each year is an ‘Archive Meeting’… …to which we encourage members either to bring something historical or to tell us of something interesting. Peter Lisle-Taylor spoke first about a medieval route from Oxford to Bristol that is shown on the Gough Map in the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford. This ancient map is thought to depict medieval Great Britain in about 1360. Some towns, rivers and routes are clearly marked and there is a route drawn between Oxford and Bristol with Malmesbury clearly shown. Unfortunately, Tetbury was !not a sufficiently large settlement to have been marked, but Peter feels sure we can !claim that travellers using this track would have passed through Tetbury.

As a member of the Church choir he earned 2/6 at each service and 7/6 for a wedding. This funded his visits to the sweet shop at the corner of West Street/Cutwell, as well as at least two others. He gave us graphic descriptions of the formidable lady teacher at the ‘Nash’ school and the musical instruments that ‘Trooper’ Witchell stocked upstairs. Playing in the Cutwell stream, sledging in the snow and ‘free to roam’ was the rule in the countryside – his is a great story! Alison Hesketh spoke about the history of bells and how they are used to inform or summon people. She had brought along a handbell that had had a great bearing on her life. Her mother rang it furiously to call the family home, but her sick father used a gentler ring to call for assistance. Somehow,

that bell had led her to have some expertise about the cultivation of roses - and to her first employment. Syd Mosdell too spoke of his school days at Sir William Romney’s. He spoke of the history of the Snooty Fox and displayed an auction catalogue for the sale of the White Hart Hotel in 1900. The photograph on the cover showed the stone porch in Chipping Street with the figure of the White Stag on top, and you could just see the gateway into the stables at the rear. Michael Auden had a mystery object that none of us could explain and spoke briefly of Dunkirk. Alan Twelvetree spoke next of the North/ South route through medieval Tetbury, in the days when travel was either on foot or horse, and goods were transported by pack-horses. Alan made the case for Love Lane being the northern entrance, saying that land levels were radically changed by the construction of the turnpike in 1781 but the footpath is probably the natural ground level. Love Lane is a reasonably flat path that can be traced in 1900 as far as Braybrooke Close. At that point the traveller could turn towards Cirencester or take the existing footpath across the fields, to connect at Star Farm with the Great Cotswold Ridgeway. Barry Barnes then gave us an insight into childhood after WW2. Born in Didmarton, he moved to Cutwell in Tetbury in 1950, and was a member of the West Street gang, great rivals of the Market gang.
