Young by Name Please don’t be my Valentine! As a lapsed Anglican, I’ve never had Saints on my radar, apart from the obvious ones whose special days are pre-printed in our diaries, like Andrew, George, Patrick, David, Valentine, etcetera - and the quartet after whom my old grammar school named its houses: St Anne, St Bride, St Francis and St Mary. At primary school, our teams were distinguished only by colour: red, blue, green and yellow. On moving up to senior school, I was naturally more interested in the colour of the houses, rather than their saints’ pedigrees. In a kind of synaesthesia of the saints, for me St Bride (my house) will forever be associated with yellow, St Anne green, St Francis red, and St Mary blue. Strangely, we were never taught anything about our school’s four saints, and we never thought to ask. Nor did we query why in an all-girl’s school we had a single male, St Francis, alongside the female trio.

In jail, in what could be the earliest recorded case of Stockholm Syndrome, Valentine healed his jailer’s daughter’s blindness, after which, not surprisingly, they became friends. When led away to his final fate, he left her a note signed “From Your Valentine”.

Top Trumps of Saints. Looking back, I think my school’s management missed a trick to cement house loyalty. They could have turned the distinguishing features of each saint into a compelling game of Top Trumps. St Francis:100 points for animal husbandry, 0 for maternal instinct. I wish I could cite further examples, but my knowledge of even the most famous saints is slim. Just how slim I didn’t realise until doing some research for my latest novel, ‘Murder by the Book’ (out in April,) which culminates in a murder on the 14th of February. It turns out my perception of St Valentine was more ‘Hallmark’ than historically accurate.

May I take this opportunity to wish all our advertisers and readers a happy and healthy 2018? In the blink of an eye we are in February and once again the Advertiser, free to every household in Tetbury and surrounding villages, is back - providing you with plenty of interesting and informative reading. I am sure you are well into your New Year resolutions by now and are, hopefully, managing to stick to them.
The Lions Club had a busy time leading up to Christmas - out in force in Long Street selling our Christmas Raffle tickets. This time we collected over £1,600 and we must thank those of you who bought tickets for your wonderful generosity. We were also present at many other locations, including under the Market Hall for “Christmas in Tetbury,” where we collected £77 with our trusty tombola. People sometimes ask me what the Lions Club actually does for the town. The money we collect at the various events during the year goes into our fund for good causes – so perhaps it’s appropriate that I highlight some of the areas where we
Lion’s Den donated money in 2017? This list is by no means exhaustive, but it does give a good indication of just where the funds donated by the good people of Tetbury are spent. Tetbury Rugby Club Trip £600, Wednesday Club Trip £400, Ronan’s Trust £250, Monday Club £300, Tetbury Youth Club £500, Avening School (toward tablet computers,) £2,000, South East Asia Floods £2,500, Mexico Earthquake £1,500, Allsorts £1,000, Riding for the Disabled £1,000, Tetbury Youth Club £250. In addition, you may remember we donated £1,500 to Ben Wernham to allow the addition of a lift to his house. 2017 was Lions Clubs Centenary Year and for our major funding project we gave £15,000 to Tetbury Hospital, which allowed for the continuation of eye surgery in Tetbury. We have also given £100 each month to the Tetbury Food Bank and we will continue to do so in 2018. Our club is immensely proud of what we have been able to do to help survivors of tragedies, of which there have been too many recently, and in support of local individuals and clubs, living up to our motto: ‘We Serve’. We also administer the Lions 200 Club! The lucky winners of £20 this month are: Bob Hughes, Eileen Smith, Ron Pearson and Elizabeth Sykes. In 2018 we will be commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War and I am sure there will be many opportunities for us to remember the events from that time. One initiative already underway is to decorate St Saviours Church, St Marys Church and possibly the Market Hall with handmade poppies. Tetbury Football Club Having been appointed as Chairman of Tetbury Town Football Club, I am delighted and honoured to take on the role for a club that I am hugely passionate about. Hopefully, my experience and understanding of the Club over many years will help to continue to drive us forward, both on-and-off the pitch. There is a lot currently happening at our football club. We look forward to new improved flood lights being installed at Preston Park to enhance the training facilities, kindly funded through the community supporting us at our local Tesco store. At the Clubhouse, the male WC is being refurbished to help accessibility and to be more kid-friendly for the younger members. The bar area is also getting a much-needed lick of paint, new carpet and seating. We are now screening live Premiership and Champions League games, and you will always find our doors open on Wednesday club nights and Saturday, after matches. Current, new or even old members are always welcome at our club. Keep abreast of upcoming events on Facebook, Twitter or through the Club website. The senior teams are now proudly sporting new training tops, generously provided by Speller Metcalfe - and following the fabulous Christmas party, our youth players became proud owners of smart TTFC rucksacks. It was fantastic to sign on our 200th youth player for 2017/18 this month, with all receiving fabulous coaching and opportunities at the Club. Several players from the older youth teams are now feeding into the senior squads and producing some solid performances. This is great for the future of the Club and our experienced senior players are welcoming them into the team. We are extremely fortunate to have such a committed and enthusiastic group of volunteers who work alongside our management team and I am looking forward to giving my support to them both now and for future seasons. We will be working to improve our links within the town, to further develop the youth teams, and to secure the club’s long-term future. It is pleasing to see that there is a ‘feel good’ factor around the club, with everyone moving in the same direction. Every year we have a huge task behind the scenes to keep the club running and to maintain it to the best standard possible. With this in mind, I hope that together we can continue to make Tetbury Town FC not only a community club, but also a successful one. and thanks to a computer programme called Photoshop, it’s what helps a large proportion of the film stars who will be walking the red carpet at the Oscars on March 4th look so perfect, when they appear in papers and magazines.
Crayons or Cameras? The choice is yours.... To borrow one of Michael Caine’s catch phrases, “Not a lot of people know this…,” but there was a time when digital imaging was a term best used to describe colouring books, where little numbers showed you which crayons to use where. These days, it’s the way that more than nine out of ten of us take our photographs, digitally,
Far easier, unless you have a lot of time on your hands to learn how to use Photoshop (the manual has more than 700 pages,) and if you are like most of Tetbury Camera Club’s members, (keen to take great, rather than simply good images,) is to try and start off with a picture which you will enjoy looking at without any magical computing assistance.
Today, with most cameras and phones, that’s easier to achieve than it has ever been. If you have a modern digital phone, set the photography button or switch onto A for “automatic” and you can almost be halfway there. Modern phones and cameras have very high-quality lenses, the ability to capture moving images extremely effectively and an amazing ability to shoot even when lighting is very poor. Having said that, the most important factor is still the person holding the camera and pushing the shutter button. Before you can take any shot of merit you have to ”see it” - which doesn’t come naturally to everyone. It is an expertise that can be developed with practice though, which was a point underlined recently by a friend of Tetbury Camera Club called Bob Train. Bob is programme secretary of Gloucester Camera Club and has visited our regular meetings both as a guest speaker and as a competition judge. He’s also the Royal Photographic Society’s regional representative on the documentary photography group. With that hat on he took a group of our members on a walking tour of Bristol just before Christmas, which was when the picture of one of our members was taken. On the face of it the location was not the ideal spot for an interesting picture – a windy underpass at the Bristol city centre end of the M32. But before our group had set out that day Bob explained that when he sets off to do location shots, he always thinks it’s useful to have a brief in mind of what he’d like to shoot. That day he suggested we try to find subjects that could show work activity, a detail of the city, people, action of some sort, and something that could define the location. That was a list that obviously helped put us on our toes - and the illustration with this article is just one of many we ended up with that not only met Bob’s brief, but also captures an idea of the day out. Anyone wanting to see others, or who’d like to learn more about what we do, is welcome to come along to one of our weekly meetings, which are held upstairs at the Priory Inn on most Tuesdays at 7.30pm. Dear Friends, We celebrate a baptism of a new-born baby at Christ Church this month. It is always a privilege to pray a blessing on a young family and share this special moment. Someone somewhere has worked out that we spend in the average human life: two weeks kissing, six months on the toilet, nine months playing with children, sixteen months cleaning, five years eating, seven years working and 24 years sleeping. Well, I’m sure there is no such thing as an average human life. You are all extraordinary! If we live to be seventy, we will have lived for
twenty-five thousand five hundred and sixty-seven days. If you’ve outlived that number already, congratulations! At the beginning of a life we are full of hopes and dreams of what that life might become. We have aspirations for ourselves and for others. I wonder what we aim to achieve in that time, what our life goals are? Some of these perhaps? To become rich and famous. To make friends and have a good time. To make your mark on the world. To use your gifts to your fullest ability. To survive without too much pain. To pass on genes to the next

The final blog... After almost 14 years of owning the very special Priory Inn and Stargazy Fish Bar, we handed both sets of keys to Arkell’s Brewery in December. Their family approach and community ethos will be a great fit for the town, hand-in-hand with the operational and local experience of “Relish,” their trusted tenants for Tetbury. We truly hope The Priory Inn provides them a long, happy and successful venture. It certainly was a fantastic journey for us and our family, and since we sold, we have been touched by good wishes and kind comments from so many people and businesses. Every customer was of course crucial and influential and always at the heart of what we did. We thank you all for your custom. Our staff were a tight-knit family and despite many inevitable ups and downs, we know they offered above and beyond normal expectations in terms of service and food. Some of the good people from the early days and more recently we remain in touch with, and we hope to do so for many years. The Tetbury community through The Lions, (in particular the Tetbury Advertiser Editor!,) Tetbury in Bloom, the Music and Food Festivals’ teams, Barter-at-the-Back-
Door contributors, the town’s Unsung Heroes (whom we enjoyed treating on the town’s behalf ) and the local business community all played a significant role in our business lives. They continue to do so much to shape the town’s success; many thanks to them all. To the very few whom we had to ban for various reasons, it is a simple message - try and be a better person, and life will be more pleasant for you and everyone around you. The final positive word must go to our network of 30-Mile Food and Drink Zone suppliers, farmers, growers, brewers, producers, etcetera. They never failed to inspire and motivate us to do justice to their food and drink. Our business was entirely shaped by them and their endless thirst for quality.

Dear Editor, I would like to nominate Anne Smith as your February “Unsung Hero.” Anne has been with The Dolphins Dramatic Society (DDS) since 1973, and appeared on stage in many of their productions - two of the most memorable being “The Cemetery Club” and “’Allo ‘Allo.” In more recent years Anne has taken the reins and directed at least fifteen productions, in some cases performing in them as well. She has amazing ability and truly is brilliant at both.

Since taking over on December the 11th following the property sale to our partner, Arkells, I have been busy getting to grips with what makes the Priory Inn so special. Dave and Tanya have been brilliant, spending lots of time mentoring me. Thanks guys! Firstly, I should say what a pleasure it has been getting to know the awesome team which we have inherited. Tetbury Dolphins Running Club have presented their “Dolphin Awards.” We’ve marked our first birthday with a fantastic awards night, held at the Dolphin Hall. The sold-out event celebrated various achievements, with a special award presented to Eileen Hodgson for her outstanding contribution to the club. Without her hard work, determination and love of running, the club would not exist. The awards were voted for by the club members and saw the following people honoured: Happiest Runner – Abigail
After a very successful recruitment increased membership to over one hundred members, the club were also in line to receive two places for the Virgin London Marathon of 2018. At the awards dinner we picked, at random, two club members: Fiona Dougan and Susan Rawle. On the day that applications were opened for clubs to claim their places, VLM moved the goal posts, literally days after the draw. It was therefore decided Fiona would get the place and Susan applied for a charity place. Susan will now be running for RFU Injured Players Foundation team and the club will get

Tetbury Scouts Many thanks to all of you who used the Christmas post this year, and particular thanks to Tetbury Hardware, Tenovus, Scentiments and Hampton Street Stores for hosting our post boxes. Despite a few delivery hiccups which we apologise for, we delivered more than 2,000 cards and raised a fantastic amount of funds to support our activities across the year. December saw the Beavers get into the Christmas spirit - and excited to join Tweedy the clown and friends at the Cheltenham pantomime. This has become a yearly tradition and Dick Whittington did not disappoint – and in addition, we enjoyed the extra treat of meeting both Santa and Mrs Claus before we went in. Many of the Beavers were able to give him their Christmas wishes, and we had a great photo with the man himself.
We are working hard to become involved in the community and are pleased to have established a link with the residents of Ilsom House. The Beavers created lovely Christmas cards, not only for their own families but for the residents too. At our final meeting of the year, the Beavers showed the Ilsom residents their brilliant singing voices with a carol concert before giving out their cards and talking about the badges they had earned. It was great to see the conversations flow between the generations. As we move into 2018, we look forward to making monkey hands and lava lamps in our science investigations, and toward finding out about fair trade in our global
issues badge. We are excited to have made a link with our old leader Michael Wagner too, and to be helping support the orphanage in his new home of Malawi. The Scouts are also looking forward to an exciting year, where aspiring Bear Grylls’ (our Chief Scout) have already been offered the opportunity to attend Expedition Challenge weekends, a Climbing Course, and a Survival Skills course. We have space for more young people (ages 10 and ½ to 14 years old,) to enjoy our packed programme of activities, so please get in touch with me if you would like to join the adventures! Brighter Days Ahead! As I write this article at the start of 2018, my thoughts turn to the year ahead and to keeping New Year resolutions. Unlike my painting, (which I’ve resolved to do more of this year,) where I get to the point when to continue will only spoil the overall effect, all gardeners know that your garden is never finished - it evolves from seasonto-season and year-to-year. As the seasons change, different plants take centre stage. The dainty white flowers of the snowdrop will soon transform Saint Marys’ churchyard. They will shortly be joined by cyclamen and wood anemone, bringing with them

a sense of wonder and the promise of the end of winter. When the snowdrops flower, spring cannot be far behind! Snowdrops are fully hardy. They have evolved especially hardened tips to push through any snow. They can be rather temperamental to grow but appear to enjoy the partial shade and moist soil of the Saint Marys’, where they have multiplied into drifts. Any garden will benefit from snowdrops. For the best results plant freshly-lifted snowdrops in late spring, when the foliage begins to die back. Alternatively buy just after flowering, when the leaves are green; this is called “in the green.”
Since Tetbury in Bloom “adopted” the churchyard in 2009, we have worked hard to create a balance between the “formal” and “natural” planting schemes. Our work continues. Like you, we look forward to seeing the results of last autumns work to refresh the main flowerbeds. Avening Primary School A busy start to 2018… 2018 is already well underway at Avening School. Already this year, the Hawks have journeyed to Bristol to watch a spellbinding performance of The Little Match Girl and other stories at the Old Vic. While the y5 pupils have stayed a bit closer to home, with their morning visit to SWR to take part in a design and technology lesson where they learned woodworking skills and produced their own key rack.
Our annual trip to the Young Voices concert at Birmingham NEC always generates a lot of excitement amongst pupils, staff and parents and this year’s performance was no exception. Children excelled themselves with energy, enthusiasm and impeccable behaviour as they took their places alongside 6,000 other school children and sang a medley of songs from artists such as Stevie Wonder and Ed Sheeran. On a similarly creative note, we had a

very captivating visit from storyteller Bill Church, who came into the Owls class to talk to pupils about developing their own story telling ideas. He also read from his new book ‘Don’t look at me like that’. Things are already getting sporty this term too, with the Hawks having participated in a gymnastics competition at SWR. Our y3, 4 and 5 pupils have started their weekly spring term swimming lessons and afterschool football, netball and running clubs already in full swing. Over the past few years our school has

Computer Advice 2018 – and security concerns continue! As this is my first editorial of the New Year, may I wish you a happy and healthy one? Over the coming year I will try to offer you more useful advice to keep your computer running well - and to keep the scams and vulnerabilities at bay. As you may have seen on the news and in the press, MELTDOWN and SPECTRE are the latest threats to your online life. These make use of vulnerabilities in the chips contained within computers, tablets and smartphones. The weakness appears to be in the way the information is moved around and the way the memory within the processor handles this. Usually this process is used to speed up your device to make the information available at the highest speed, but MELTDOWN could potentially use it to pass information on to a third party. For this to happen, some exploitative software called “malware” would have to be installed. This could be done via your web browser - fixes are being released now to prevent this - but if you are using an out-of-date version of a browser or the legacy Internet Explorer, switch now as there are no updates being issued and you really are putting yourself at risk.
malicious use of these vulnerabilities - and if anyone did use this path to get information it would be fragmented, and a lot of data would need to be harvested before anything meaningful could be gained. However, given time, this will happen. Do be aware that any patches that are released could slow down your computer. For everyday computing you might not notice much difference, but if you use processor-intensive applications, you could see a performance hit of up to 30%. Updates for Windows 7, 8 and 10 are out to counteract MELTDOWN and should be installed automatically, but it will be much harder to fix SPECTRE since so many devices use these chips, including those dating back as far as 1995. Intel chips seem to be the most vulnerable, but others are also affected. There will be software
updates from manufactures soon, which will help to limit the risk. If my explanation has left you rather baffled, don’t panic! The bottom line is to make sure you are getting the latest updates on your device. For Windows 8 and 10, go in to Settings and then check under Updates. Have a look in the History to see if there is recent activity. If you are using Windows 7, search for Windows Update. Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun for the largesse? Our hosts wanted to take charge of our clients’ investments. They need to tempt us to direct our funds in their direction, so we were handed leaflets on gift plans, discounted gift plans, loan plans and planning opportunities - but the real item on which they want to capture our interest was “inheritance tax planning through business relief.”
The joys of a breakfast seminar. A new year is upon us - and we will have to find new premises as our lease comes to an end. With advanced technology the need for space has diminished, which should be better for all concerned. During the festive season I had a frisson of excitement, because I was invited to a breakfast seminar in an upmarket garage by some financial advisers. The hosts of this kind of seminar are usually very generous with their fry-ups – and over the course of a
breakfast that is not rushed, have a story to tell. This meeting did not disappoint. The chosen subject was the ‘World of Inheritance’ - tax planning being a wide and tricky subject, especially as the government tries to seek greater control over any schemes put forward. The company was genial, and it was good to see one’s fellow lawyers in a relaxed setting eating their bacon sandwiches and not arguing the toss over whether his or her client is in the right! In amongst the general bonhomie I awaited the ‘main event’ - and the reason

The idea of business property relief was to enable small family businesses to pass from generation to generation, without being inflicted with 40% inheritance tax - or the need to sell the business to pay the tax burden. What our hosts had in mind was something completely different. Their plan is for a wealthy individual, who possibly may not have worked at all during his or her life, to invest in the shares of an unquoted trading company - and to then live on for two years. This is very good because the policy of giving 100% business relief for inheritance tax purposes enables all kinds of businesses to obtain outside investment. Having achieved that, none of the investment should be liable for inheritance tax. These products are recommended for investors, who wish to maintain control and have degree of flexibility, but which would also be suitable for a comatose client, under a lasting power of attorney, provided that the wording in the LPA gives sufficient discretion to the attorneys to alter the investments as and when desired. If you make a lifetime gift and want it taken completely out of your estate for inheritance tax purposes, you have to live seven years afterward - but by these means two years investment will achieve the same result - although the difference is that the eventual recipient of the gift cannot do anything until it is received after death, and the eventual donor can carry on. News from St Marys’ Church Here’s a nice story. A little girl was sitting on her grandfather’s lap as he read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek, then stroke her own face. Finally, she spoke up, “Grandpa, did God make you?” “Yes, sweetheart, “he answered, “God made me a long time ago.” The little girl paused. “Oh,” she said, “and did God make me too?” “Yes, indeed,” her grandfather replied, “God made you just a little while ago.”The little girl thought a bit more, and then then observed: “God’s getting better at it, isn’t he?”
baptised … we say the bubbles show we are surrounding them with our love and our prayers. As well as Little Fishes in church, we do lots at St Mary’s Church of England Primary School. The Churches Together “Open the Book” team go into school on the Thursday morning of most weeks. They act out all the favourite Bible stories, with lots of humour and great costumes. The children help too – and everyone loves it. On Wednesdays, we also run the St Mary’s Faith Explorers After-School Club. Up to twenty-five children can sign up, and I am delighted that we are always “full.” Together, we explore “big questions” about what we believe, with Bible stories, chatting, questions, craft activities and snacks. Our big question this term is “Who is Jesus?” In one session we think about why Jesus is like a Good Shepherd – and make our delicious sheep biscuits.

With Christmas and the New Year celebrations behind us, we are all looking ahead to what will be happening in 2018, so I will just briefly mention that in December 2017, Sheila Poole was the overall winner in our Christmas Card Competition - and our Christmas Social, masterminded by Barry Barnes, was greatly enjoyed. Hazel Cudmore devised a fiendish general knowledge quiz to entertain us and members each brought along a small contribution of finger food for our buffet.
Ashley and Jenny Riley, trips to the South Kensington museums and Bristol as well as several socials were arranged by Barry. Angela Scrivin managed our membership and Hazel managed our funds. I offer a big thank you to them all. Tetbury Hospital has benefited from the sale of members’ work at the hospital. With 2017 behind us, we now have an interlude: the committee are busy wrapping up 2017 (e.g. the treasurer is finalising the accounts for 2017.) The chairman and other committee members are preparing to start our 2018 programme with the AGM on Wednesday 14th February at 7.30 pm in St. Michael’s Hall and members are waiting for the AGM and hopefully also doing some painting! By the time that you read this article, the finishing touches will have been put to our programme for 2018 by Doreen Pierce. At the time of writing, demonstrations proposed will include mosaics, oil painting, illustration and cake icing and there will be a surgery for paintings that are not quite working, opportunities to paint and sketch outdoors (weather permitting!) as well as two exhibitions in the Market Hall, an Autumn Sale, and several socials and coach trips.

History of Tetbury Society For the January meeting of the History of Tetbury Society we always ask members to bring along an item of interest. This year Jane Haines, our Chairman, brought a DVD made by Dr. Phillip Hills of the ‘Tour of the Town’ in August 2006 – a tour led by Geoff Haines. Sadly, Geoff died aged 78 on the 18th of December last year after a debilitating illness, but he was obviously at his very best in 2006 as the footage showed, and it was most interesting to see and hear him pointing out places of particular interest. His presentation of the history of the town was always leavened with anecdotes he had collected. The film also reminded us of other Tetburians who were in his audience but are no longer with us. What a pity the microphone had picked up so much traffic noise! Upon arriving in Tetbury in 1995, Geoff immediately showed a great interest in the town’s history. He became Chairman of HOTS in 1998, but had to give way to Jane in 2013 when he realised his memory was failing. His enthusiasm was infectious - and our membership increased so that we needed progressively to move to larger accommodation. Today Christ Church would be over-full if all our members attended at once. Geoff carried out a huge amount of research into the history of the town helping HOTS produce two publications, and he also assisted enthusiastically many people researching their own family history. Jane has already
taken over where Geoff left off but, nevertheless, he will be greatly missed. Also at our January meeting, our archivist, Ann Lisle Taylor, read extracts from the diary of Thomas Pike who lived in Tetbury from 1751 to 1815 and who kept a diary from 1788 to 1801. Thomas recorded bitter frosts and heavy snow and, in 1790, that it was exceptionally cold in June. He must have travelled to witness executions too, and records a duel. In 1788, the church bells were rung all day to celebrate the passing of a ‘Wool Act’. Alarm was raised by the ‘Battle of Fishguard’ when a French ‘army’ was defeated by local militia reinforced by local ladies dressed in red coats resembling the army uniforms.
There were celebrations when they had news of Nelson’s victory at Cape St Vincent. In 1798 it took two months for news of the victory at the battle of the Nile to reach Tetbury, but they had a full day of celebrations. These are just examples from Thomas Pike’s diary, which also records many local happenings. Peter Lisle Taylor had been researching the local gentry who attended a Ball at the White Hart at the end of the 19th century - and gave us details of their ancestry and achievements. Mayor’s Piece It seems a long time since the turn of the year… …and January has been a damp cold month, but now Spring is on the way and the days are beginning to get just that bit lighter in the evening. The news that Tesco were closing their re-cycling centre due to the amount of fly tipping on the site was very disappointing, but not surprising. The nearest comprehensive recycling site is now at Pike Quarry on the way to Horsley. This site accepts all kinds of material for recycling and is a well-used facility. The Town Council have increased their stocks of recycling bags and containers so should you wish to add to your existing recycling containers, please call in at the Council Offices to collect extra recycling bags, caddies or boxes for kerbside collection. This year is the centenary of the end of World War One and plans are being made to celebrate this event in Tetbury. If you are a good knitter or can wield a crochet hook, please consider joining ‘Operation Poppy.’ Contact Tara Niblett at the Town Council Offices, either by ringing 504213 or by e-mail at deputyclerk@tetbury.gov.uk to register your interest.
We are losing litter bins at a fair rate of knots! Already five bins have disappeared from locations in and around Tetbury. We have to purchase new bins to keep our town tidy and the litter off the streets - and they are not cheap to replace – so if you see anyone attempting to take a litter bin from its location please report this as soon as possible to the Council Offices, with a description of the litter bin thieves - and if possible a registration number of any vehicle that they are using. Not only are we losing litter bins, but we are experiencing a high number of burglaries too. Private houses have been broken into and property taken away, which is greatly upsetting for the householders. Please ensure that your homes are secure and locked, should you be away from home for even a short time. Please also be alert to vehicles parked in our streets with their engines running and a driver at the wheel. They may be waiting for an accomplice to return to the vehicle with stolen goods to make a quick getaway. If you do witness any suspicious situation, please call the Police on 101 to report what you have seen, and of course make a note of the vehicle’s registration number. Winter is still with us and there could be a good number of cold days to experience yet before spring bursts through, so remember to look out for elderly and vulnerable neighbours during these winter days, to ensure that they are keeping warm and well. Many people comment that we
have a very caring community here in Tetbury, so let’s all be good examples of caring neighbours at this time of year. Tetbury Town Council held a Budget Consultation recently to obtain views on several major projects which are being considered for our town. As a result, we will have a budget which will fund a number of beneficial projects in the future. It’s going to be a busy year! Thank you all for playing your part in the positive Tetbury community. I hope you all had a good Christmas? We have lots of lovely trips to look forward to in 2018, and our last two in 2017 were to Salisbury and Bristol. Our Salisbury outing was to see “The Ladykillers” by Graham Lineham, which was about the glory Days of Ealing comedy, and very light and enjoyable. The scenery was amazing, set “in the round.” Salisbury playhouse is a lovely theatre and is located right in the centre of Salisbury, which was great as it was a day trip so we all had time to shop, have a look around the city, lunch and look at the wonderful world-famous Salisbury Cathedral. In December our trip was to Bristol Cathedral to “Carols by Candlelight.” The
choir has been singing on the site of the cathedral since 1140 - since the original monastery was founded, the church then formally became Bristol Cathedral. The choir was beautiful, and the seasonal readings were also quite wonderful, as an actor called John Telfer read them. He has been at Bristol old Vic as an actor, and has also been on TV in “Casualty” and “Bergerac” to name but two. At the moment he’s playing the Vicar of Ambridge on the Radio 4 program “The Archers,” so you can image the high quality of his delivery. Bristol Cathedral itself is a beautiful building and the stone work was amazing. All in all it was another lovely venue for us and it certainly put us all into the spirit of Christmas. Now, in 2018 lots of new treats! On the 26th of January it is our social evening and AGM which is at the Dolphins Hall at
Tetbury Theatre Group 7.00 pm. Probus A turbulent past, an unprecedented schematic genocide and still no peace of mind were soon made clear last year on the 19th of November, when Bob Adams described for us the complex history of Poland since Napoleonic times. Dropping arms and supplies to the Polish patriots during the 1944 Warsaw uprising had generated his lasting interest. His thorough account, including the oppression of the Polish people after the German and Russian invasions in 1939 and subsequent Nazi occupation, deserves a fuller report. But events such as the 1940 Katyn execution of 25,000 Polish soldiers and others by the Russians, and ruthless Nazi persecution of all Jews are just two of the many examples he cited which led to Poland losing 20% of its population during the Second World War. Bob was both comprehensive and enlightening.

thirty years later. He illustrated how German forces had broken through the American lines near Bastogne in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge. There, American soldiers lost in the forest had stumbled across a cabin. Frau Winckler, the German living there with her 12-year old son, Fritz, offered them shelter from the bitter winter weather on the condition that they left their weapons outside. When three Germans also came upon the cabin, incredibly, she persuaded them to do likewise. One German soldier tended a seriously wounded American before they all shared a peaceful but meagre Christmas Day meal together. Shaking hands, they then returned to their own units. This compassionate tale became the basis for the film ‘Truce in the Forest’ shown to us in part. There were no new train sets at our last meeting before Christmas, but on the 19th of December Denis Cartwright described the world’s largest steam locomotives. These were the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad’s ‘Allegheny’ Class, designed to haul heavy coal trains across the mountains of Virginia. Sixty were built at the Lima Locomotive Works between 1941 and 1948, each weighing nearly 350 Imperial tons. This was about three times the weight of large British locomotives at the time. Displaying his wide knowledge of locomotive developments, Denis skilfully explained how changes in early 19th century technology, particularly the transmission of power to the wheels, had eventually led to the 2-6-6-6 Allegheny design. The introduction of improved positioning of key components, reversing engines and swivelling lead driving wheels had all played their part, as amply illustrated throughout with slides. In thanking Denis for yet one more of many enjoyable talks to us over the past 26 years, our chairman Malcolm Lomax paid tribute to his major contribution. Tetbury WI Our very enjoyable January meeting was packed, both with people and content. After a brief business meeting, Commander Robin Parry talked to us about the Royal Yacht. He illustrated its history with slides and showed us where the yacht is now located in Scotland in its new life as a tourist attraction. This was followed by cider tasting, which had originally been scheduled for December. Alex Sheen introduced us to five Aspall ciders, and we sampled different foods which showed how successfully cider can accompany various flavours. In addition to all this, we were entertained by two members who proposed the Votes of Thanks. One was very articulate and accomplished. The other was spontaneously very funny and engaging. I thought how appropriately they epitomised our membership. We are looking forward to this year’s activities. Since my last report, auditions have taken place, the cast has been chosen, and rehearsals have started for our production of “Abigail’s Party.” Mike Leigh’s classic play is regularly voted as one of the top 100 British comedies of all time, and, despite its age, it’s still relevant and enjoyable today. This production has a fantastic cast who will really bring the characters to life and put on a show that will ‘pack a punch’ and give the audience a great night out. The production is being directed by Helen Ryder, one of our very talented new members. Helen has been involved in the theatre for 22 years, since discovering it as her passion. Helen is quite new to Tetbury, originally hailing from Derby. Rather exotically, perhaps, she also lived in Japan for a time, where she was a member of the Tokyo Comedy Store. Along with comedy, Helen has experience of many genres including Shakespeare, Musical Theatre and Pantomime. She enjoys performing, working backstage and in directing roles too; she’s particularly excited about directing Abigail’s Party for the Dolphins.

they particularly enjoyed playing in the snow. The staff did too!! They also spent time making wonderful decorations, cards and calendars, while learning all about the meaning of Christmas. The end of term nativity tableaux was a huge success, and as usual well supported by parents, grandparents and other family members. Father Christmas even managed to spare a few minutes to pop in to say hello. With the dip in temperature we have moved nicely into this terms topic of winter stories and making a winter collage. However, this hasn’t stopped us getting outside and we have already been looking at the signs of Spring during Forest School and making ‘porridge’ for the ‘bears’ in the forest! Throughout the term we are hoping to have some information technology focus days where the children will enjoy activities by accessing the variety of IT equipment available - iPads, computers etc. And with our fantastic online journals that parents can access to see photos and videos of the children at playgroup at any time, it has also been a wonderful way of seeing all the fun the children have had in the snow at home, too. It is with great sadness that this term we will be saying goodbye to Amanda, who helped to lead the playgroup back in 2015 and who more recently has taken on the role of our SEND coordinator. She has been a huge part of playgroup life over the last few years and will be sadly missed by all the staff, parents and children. We wish you all the best in the future Amanda, and hope you enjoy a rest! In 2018 the Seedlings group continues every Monday morning from 9.30 to 11.30 at the front of Christ Church. It is run by our lovely mum and Playgroup Deputy Kelly, who offers fresh and exciting activities each week, as well as a welcoming smile to greet everyone through the door. It would be hard not to notice the huge strain that the NHS is under right now, from the shortage of beds, the long waits in A&E, right down to the extra busy GP surgeries. This season’s flu is expected to be one of the worst if Australia’s experience is anything to go by, and this will make things even more busy in the NHS.
If you do get flu, make sure you take care of yourself by keeping hydrated, taking paracetamol or ibuprofen for aches and pains, and resting. Washing your hands, staying home when sick and using tissues when coughing and sneezing will also help, as will only going to A&E if you have developed sudden chest pain, have difficulty breathing or start coughing up blood. If you are unsure of what to do, call NHS 111, or check out the ASAP app (http:// www.asapglos.nhs.uk)

They are both settling in well, and seemed to have brought both more appointments and a sunny disposition with them. Together they have brought us up to full numbers, which means that we will not have to depend on locums as much. This will bring the welcome continuity of care that we know our patients value. Our current registrar Dr Fazia Hussan will be moving on in February to continue her training. We wish her all the best, and hope like many other registrars that have trained with Romney House, she will consider coming back to work with us again. Kesh Meckecha has been the practice manager at Romney House Surgery for just over four years now and has been thinking about taking a break and ‘going in a different direction’ for some time now. The direction he will be going in he has not yet confirmed, but it definitely involves travel! Alongside supporting his son’s new business, he has decided to take a well-earned break and accompanied by his trusty backpack - will be travelling off the beaten track soon, in some interesting and far flung places. The PPG would like to thank Kesh for all the support he has given them over the years, including, but not limited to, the welcoming coffee, crisps and satsumas that appear during each PPG committee meeting. We wish him a safe journey. At time of writing interviews have been conducted for a new practice manager, but no decisions have been made. We will bring news in next month’s issue.

St Mary’s CE VA Primary School At St Mary’s we aspire to help all our children to be artistic, creative and to have a wealth of sporting opportunities. We want them to experience the world around them in as many ways possible, whether this is through the love of nature at Forest Schools, using bean bags to help them with maths skills, or learning to play an instrument or singing a solo in a school production. The Y3/4 Gymnastics team to take over forty children on the coach to Birmingham; a tiring day and night for the teachers but well worth it! The evening was uplifting, and it was amazing to see the children grow so much in confidence, self-esteem and enthusiasm. It was an experience that the children will always treasure. In sport, the Y5/6 children represented St Mary’s in the large schools qualifying round at Kingshill in Sportshall Athletics. They showed great teamwork, perseverance and belief and we were super proud of them for their achievements. The Y3/4 Gymnastics team competed in the local Key Steps Gymnastics Competition. After conquering their nerves, they all enjoyed performing their routines and demonstrated great agility and poise. Well done all!

…in the Market Place, Tetbury, on Thursday the 7th of December, and on the opening night – which coincided with Tetbury’s “Switch On” evening – were delighted to take just over £2,500 in just four hours. Sir William Romney’s School We were delighted to celebrate the Christmas season… …with students from Sir William Romney’s, St.Mary’s and Avening schools combining at St.Mary’s Church, in our second Christmas Carol Service. It was a wonderful evening full of amazing musical performances, singing and reading. Students from all schools displayed great confidence and helped to make the entire congregation feel very festive. Random Acts of Kindness Challenge Mental health awareness remains an important focus for our Student Council this academic year. Tetbury Police Museum And now for another Cold Case File:” Bad Ginger Beer.” At Malmesbury County Court on August the 1st 1864 before J. Francillon Esq., the case of Jane Giles v Isaac Cooley was heard. The claim was for 5s 10d for 10 dozen (bottles) of ginger beer. Both the plaintiff and the defendant resided at Tetbury, and the latter is the editor and publisher of a valuable publication called “The Tetbury Journal.” 2s 8d was paid by the defendant into court, and a breach of warranty pleaded as to the remainder. Jane Giles on being examined, stated she agreed to make defendant ginger beer at 7d per dozen, defendant finding bottles, corks and string. She made it very good, but if she had 8d per dozen could make it better. She washed the bottles with warm and cold water. Defendant’s cellar was not a good one to put it in, as there was a pony in one corner of it. Anna Howell also stated she drank some of it when made and it was very good. In defence, Isaac Cooley stated the plaintiff had engaged to make ginger beer good, but had failed to do so; his cellar was a good one, although it had a pony in it.

Tetbury Food Bank Christmas is a time for giving... …and without a doubt Tetbury folk know how to give! Christmas is a notoriously difficult time for those on low incomes, especially when there are children involved, and those who use the Tetbury Food Bank are all on very low incomes for a variety of reasons – but through the generosity of Tetbury folk, their Christmases were made a little brighter than they may otherwise have been. Not only were we overwhelmed with gifts of food donated at Tesco and the churches, which included many seasonal treats which enabled us to give a few extras, but additionally both Bev, her family and ‘Silver Linings’ gave us enough wrapped individual Christmas presents so that we could give two gifts to each person using the Food Bank over the Festive Season. We also received many monetary donations, which help us out when needed, since users need food all year round, not just at Christmas. The Club’s actions and the need that is apparent in the town were also foremost in the mind of the Tetbury resident who won the huge Lions food hamper in the annual Christmas raffle, as she generously donated the entire contents to help this initiative. The Food Bank in Tetbury was born out of a growing need to support local people in crisis. It is an independent registered charity, run, managed and operated solely by volunteers - and it’s one of three Food Bank centres operated from Cirencester. The Food Bank comes under the wider “Trussell Trust” umbrella. The Tetbury centre was established in April 2016, following statistics that showed that of the town’s population, 15% of all households are over 65 and live on their own and that 4% of households are single parents with dependent children. Since opening, the Food Bank in Tetbury has made nearly 1,500 donations to people in need and over the Christmas period ensured that fifteen families in Tetbury provided their children with a much better festive period than they had anticipated. The Tetbury Lions donations have totalled just over 300 kilogrammes since April 2017. We remain committed to local people and projects so without hesitation we were pleased to able to pledge to increase the budget by 50% to £1,800 for 2018. Rachel Brindley, the manager of the Food Bank, has expressed her delight with the commitment, saying: “We are very grateful for the wonderful support offered to us by the Tetbury Lions. Hello and Happy New Year. This is my first article since becoming Project Manager for Tetbury Area Youth and Community Trust (TAYCT), which includes The Peoples Pod and Tetbury Job Club. It’s been a busy few months since I started last September, learning the ropes, getting to know the young people down at The Pod and re-launching the Job Club. I have big shoes to fill, as previous manager Mandy Scott has done a great job in providing excellent services for young people - activities and projects which are fun, build confidence and self-esteem, whilst also giving practical and emotional support. I look forward to developing what has already been created and getting to know the young people of Tetbury further.
In December we held our Christmas meal (with all the trimmings!) which was enjoyed by all. A big thank you to the Tetbury Dolphins Running Club for a donation that helped finance this. Thank you also to Tesco for the Christmas crackers, which helped make it a properly festive occasion. The young people prepared the puddings and made sauces for the meal themselves. We are very keen on cooking at the Pod and even with limited resources, we’re always keen to make and create! A love of baking was also evident in December, when some of the young people spent a Friday evening making mince pies, gingerbread, brownies and more for our Bake Sale on the 16th of December. It was inspired by young people wanting to raise money for the Pod, and they made delicious goodies and created a poster to advertise the event in Tetbury, too. At the Pod, we

Tetbury Area Youth & Community Trust love providing a safe and fun environment (albeit slightly cold at times!) for young people at our Tuesday and Friday drop-in sessions. However, we also love to empower young people to make their ideas happen and make a difference. An amazing £119.05 was raised by the bake sale. Thank you to all those who came by to support us. If you missed this opportunity, don’t worry because they seem keen to do another! We’d like to thank all those who voted for us with their blue tokens at Tesco during November and December, as well. It was great seeing the Tetbury community support young people in the area. This should allow us to provide a better outside area, which will be fabulous. Finally, Tetbury Job Club recently relocated to the Library on a Thursday afternoon between .00 and 3.00 pm. We are happy to help with internet access, online forms, to give support with CV writing, cover letters, email, job and apprenticeship searches, application forms, interview techniques and any other related support. This is for anyone of working age and is not specific to youth. We can also provide practical support for Universal Credit applications. Suitable for anyone from the age of 8 upwards, the micro:bit is a handheld, fully-programmable computer. Developing coding skills and encouraging both logical and creative thinking, this small device can help you to make your own games, apps, musical instruments, robots and so much more. It has 25 LED lights, programmable buttons, motion detectors, digital compass and can even interact with other devices via Bluetooth! 2018 is a big year for Tetbury Hospital, as it celebrates 25 years as a charitable trust. We exist to help older people in the county navigate later life, remain independent at home for as long as they wish to, and to help them connect socially. We do this in a variety of ways, by providing information, advice and

a range of services specifically designed for older people.
Information and Advice Our expert team can help you claim benefits you may be entitled to, navigate the social care system and generally plan for later life. Plus, our Joining Forces project, together with our partners SSAFA (Gloucestershire) provides specific help to older veterans and their partners who have served in the Armed Forces.
Staying Independent at Home Most people would like to remain at home for as long as possible, but this can become difficult as needs change. Age UK Gloucestershire can help you make those small adjustments and provide help with practical support, which could ensure you
are comfortable and safe at home. From specific products, such as riser-recliner chairs and bathing solutions, to personal alarms (free 6-week trial available), all are designed to make life easier. For those worried about managing after a spell in hospital, our free Out of Hospital service is available to help you get back on your feet and build longer-term confidence following your return home.
Connecting Socially As we get older there may be fewer opportunities to connect regularly with others. Age UK Gloucestershire can help you find groups and activities in your area to help you maintain that social contact which is so important for health and wellbeing. We run four choirs across the county, including one in Cirencester, which combine music-making with a great social environment and everyone is welcome. Getting friendly with a laptop, iPad or smartphone can open up new ways to shop, connect with others and research hobbies and interests. Age UK Gloucestershire can help you find local organisations who can offer tuition in getting on-line.
