Young by Name The Scents and Sense of Summer At the start of the heatwave, I throw open my study window and am almost knocked over by the heady scent of honeysuckle immediately filling the room. On the first floor of my cottage, my study is at the same height as the vast drift of the stuff that has engulfed the old apple tree outside my back door. Daily, at my desk, I assess the passing of the seasons more by the state of the branches of tress than by shrubs and flowers at ground level. This is probably the closest I will ever get to having a tree house, which I hear is the latest trendy addition to the domestic garden, outranking in the “cool” stakes, the previous must-have “shed office,” or “shedquarters,” as my friends call theirs.
Subtler Scent Roses have a similar effect on me to honeysuckle, although their assault is more subtle, and you have to meet it halfway. Having grown up in a suburb where nearly every garden featured traditional roses, I still cannot pass a rose in full bloom without the impulse to bury my face in its petals and inhale.
me feel like I was swimming through perfume. No matter how glamorous or alluring the advertisements for modern designer perfumes, surely no chemical manufacturer will ever develop a product with such magical and transformative powers. I’m a naturally calm and optimistic soul, but such experiences always send me a few notches up the laid-back scale, to the nearly horizontal.

Living in a chaotic political age, when sometimes the whole world seems in turmoil, I can only draw hope from the knowledge that the grounds of both the White House and 10 Downing Street include a rose garden. I can only hope that this summer our leaders spend more time in such grounding and redemptive places, emerging stronger, saner, and more sensitive for the experience. There – I told you I was an optimist! Stealthy Stalker There’s something magical about the scent of honeysuckle. The fragrance is so thick and heady that I’m almost surprised I can’t see it as it sneaks up and takes possession of me, holding me captive before I’ve even noticed that it’s about to pounce. But the associations are all positive, and I’m sure it lowers my blood pressure, makes me calmer, more reflective, and more content with my lot.

This perfume takes me straight back to my suburban childhood home, where we had a vast hedge of it scrambling over the wall by the back door. That’s why I planted this one in a similar spot in my present country garden. Next on my list is to establish a rose garden. I may be some time.

Every July the Lions President stands down and another keen volunteer steps into the position. This past year Alan Cross held the reins and did a splendid job of leading our club with his own blend of enthusiasm, efficiency and humour (though his jokes sometimes caused a groan or two!) I am proud to be the new President of Tetbury Lions Club, especially as Lions International celebrates its Centenary on the 7th of June, this year. My thanks go to you Alan. Alan has been tireless in his desire for our club to do something special to recognise this anniversary, and after much deliberation, the club has decided that we will provide funds to Tetbury Hospital. This money, so generously donated by the people of Tetbury, will enable the hospital to replace ageing
Tetbury Food Bank Representatives of Tetbury Lions spent a very productive time recently… …with Rachel, the Food Bank Manager. Filling up the Lion’s trolley with very necessary food goodies for the coming month, it was great having Rachel help and advise Lion Steve and me on exactly what products families would really appreciate. The foodbank will weigh the Lion contribution over the coming year and also provide us with a monthly total, to see what we have actually achieved. This is a great measure for us; lets “Go for a Ton!”
Of immediate interest is the idea of a promotional film production, covering the Food Bank process from point-of-shop through collection, right up to the giving and receiving of the food parcel by the client. At the time of writing the voiceover process is planned, with production being undertaken by a local and up-and-coming 19- year-old production star. Watch this space. Lion Warren
Lion’s Den but vital ophthalmic equipment, allowing the treatment of eye ailments to continue in Tetbury. It will free up Hospital funds to allow the purchase of other additional equipment, so that even more people can be treated locally, rather than having to be sent further away for treatment. Members of the club have also been very busy organising the ‘Tetbury Cares’ workshop, which took place on the 3rd of June. The workshop was supported by the Tetbury Feoffees and Tetbury Town Council, to whom we are very grateful. It brought together seven inspirational speakers and over 50 organisations, all of whom provide various kinds of care and support to the people of Tetbury and surrounding villages. This sharing of information and ideas should result in a better understanding of just what Tetbury people need - and perhaps lack. The Lions Club will be producing a report covering all the ideas that came out of the workshop, and create and maintain a new website containing details of the organisations. This will be made available to everyone in Tetbury, including those providers of care services – and may well be just a start. It will be very interesting to see if anything more substantial grows out of this initiative. Tetbury Woolsack Races were again a huge success and I congratulate the organising committee and all the volunteers, for their unstinting hard work in putting on such a fun- filled day for the town. The Lions, as usual, had a stand for our tombola, which despite the wet weather did really well. We were delighted to welcome two new members at our June meeting, Nigel and Penny Dobson, and I look forward to working with them in the future.
Rachel also has lots of other exciting ideas to share with the Lions at some future stage.
We are now in the summer season and Tetbury will no doubt be extremely busy with events such as the Summer Show, Tetbury in Bloom and a little later the Classic Car Show. So much hard work always goes into organising these events, so please take the opportunity to visit them.

Puddle Ducks Unbelievably, we have once again come to our last Tetbury Advertiser column of the academic year. The summer term is always a busy one and this year has been no exception. The children were invited along to Tetbury Library recently, where the lovely Linda entertained us all with a story and a craft activity which we enjoyed hugely, and we looked wonderful walking back to Puddle Ducks wearing some very colourful rabbit ears that we had made! There have been opportunities for the children moving to St. Mary’s School in September, to get to know their new teachers this term too. Unfortunately the annual Teddy Bears Picnic was rained off, but we were very pleased to welcome Reception staff to our room during an afternoon pre-school session where the children were able to show off their artistic skills and have fun in our farm shop. As I write this article we are looking forward to St. Mary’s School KS1 Sports Day, when
we will put our best feet forward in the preschoolers race, as well as having a chance to spend an hour visiting the classrooms the following week. It is always a bittersweet time of year for the staff at Puddle Ducks as, of course, we look forward to the summer holidays and hopefully some lovely weather to enjoy, but it also means that it is time to say goodbye to some of the children we have cared for over the past months or years. Although we will miss them all, we know that they will have lots of fun in their new schools and we look forward to hearing how they are all getting on. If you have a child who is of pre-school age and you would be interested in finding out more about our setting, please contact Catherine Chidley on 01666 504 257 who will be pleased to give you more details and arrange a time to come and visit during session time. We are proud to be a small setting with a high staff to child ratio and can be found at the back of the Dolphins Hall where we provide a caring and fully holistic and inclusive environment. Spaces for next year are limited but we are able to take enquiries for September 2017 and January 2018. Younger children need not miss out though as our Ducklings toddler group will continue to run on a Friday afternoon. The last Ducklings session this year will be held on 14th July but we’ll be back on 8th September.
It only now remains to give our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to our successful year in any way and of course to the children and families who have made us what we are. Working with early years children is a genuine joy and a privilege and we have loved every moment. We wish you all a lovely summer and we can’t wait to do it all again next year! Puddle Ducks

SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED ABOUT LONG TERM CARE?
IF YOU HAVE ASSETS EXCEEDING £23,250, INCLUDING YOUR FAMILY HOME YOU MAY HAVE TO FUND LONG TERM CARE COSTS BY YOURSELF.
M
ost of us would prefer to see our home, savings and other assets eventually pass to our family and loved ones. Yet government guidelines for long term care funding mean that this wish may never become a reality.
State assistance towards the cost of social care is means-tested; primarily by imposing upper and lower capital limits on your income and savings, property and other assets. If your personal income and assets are in excess of the upper capital limits, and if you do not qualify for nursing care, you would normally be expected to pay for your own care in full. And with more of us needing long term care as a result of living longer than ever before, serious consideration must be given now to how you will fund these fees without eroding your family’s legacy. You may think you can avoid the problem by giving away your assets now and escaping the attention of your Local Authority in the future. However, under current rules, this would need to be done with caution as your Local Authority may have the power to include any gifted assets in their assessment, as if they had never been given away. The harsh reality therefore could be that you are still
expected to pay for care, even though you no longer have the assets to cover these costs. This could mean a reliance on state provision, which would naturally reduce your choice and location of care home. Having worked hard all your life to enjoy a lifestyle of freedom and choice, do you really want to have your care home chosen by your Local Authority? With careful financial planning it may be possible to fund care for as long as required, whilst safeguarding as much capital as possible. For this reason consulting with a care fees advisor is essential from both a health and financial perspective. Cotswold Wealth Solutions is a local Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, and is qualified to offer advice in this specialist area. “With the average cost of care rising, nursing homes in the UK now charge on average £39,300 per year (Laing & Buisson Care of Elderly People UK Market Survey 2014/15). Therefore, serious consideration should be given to protecting your hard-earned wealth.” Cotswold Wealth Solutions will be holding no obligation long term care Surgeries on 28 July 2017 at the Main office, 16 Church
Cotswold Wealth Solutions Ltd is based locally and is inviting Tetbury Advertiser readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to preserve the legacy available to your loved ones whilst managing your liability for long term care fees. Woolsack Day announcing the final total to donate to Longfield Hospice and local youth sports projects, before too long. Finally, a big thanks to everyone who helped before and during the day including the Snooty Fox, DJ Sweet Lightning, the Tomlinson’s, Westonbirt Arboretum, Eagle Plant, Car Care, the Royal Oak, Tetbury Council, MHC Cotswolds, Co-Op, British Wool, Phil Seal, the Cadets and pupils from Sir William Romney’s School, Lester Murphy for helping with the commentary as usual and the lovely time-keeping ladies. Blue Peter’s Radzi meets St Michael’s Obi
This year’s Woolsack Races took place on Bank Holiday Monday the 29th of May… …and we would like to thank all the entrants and runners from local schools that competed this year, as well as all those that braved the inclement weather to cheer them on. We had a great turn out of competitors, and for the first time in several years could run a youth team race for those aged between 14 and 17. Thanks to Tetbury Rugby Club for entering three teams, always with a smile, and also to our youth visitors from France who gamely fielded two more teams.
Results: Ladies individual winner: Abi Hamesse - 60.9 seconds a new record Men’s individual winner: Ben Sellick - 52.94 seconds Youth team winners: Tetbury RFC under 16’s - 197.7 seconds
Ladies team winners: The Royal Oak 2 - 40.34 seconds a new record Men’s team winners: George Vets - 198.03 seconds Mixed team winners: The Royal Oak - 274.72 seconds Veloton uphill cycle sprint: Neil Rutter - 26.9 seconds It must be pointed out that the woolsacks get incredibly heavy in the rain, so the fact that two records were broken shows how competitive our racers are!
Our committee consists of seven individuals who meet throughout the year to put on this free event, and to help raise money for charity. Contrary to popular belief we are not related to the Tetbury Lions club, and we desperately need more people to join our committee if this event, (which has now been going for over forty years,) is to continue. Please message us at tetburywoolsack@ gmail.com or look on our Facebook page for details of meetings, if you are interested in helping us, or can spare some time to join the committee. Tammy Stringer, Tetbury Woolsack Committee
We were also joined by Radzi from Blue Peter, who not only competed but put up a great time in the men’s individual race. The event was filmed and shown on CBBC in June; if you missed it it’s available for 30 days from the 15th of June on Iplayer. We would like to thank all the wonderful local businesses who gave so generously to this year’s raffle and those that provided sponsorship either by sponsoring races or hanging banners – all details are on our website at www.tetburywoolsack.co.uk Final numbers aren’t in yet, but we will be Pictures courtesy of K. Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun
freemasonry in the family at the time and practising law was respectable, at the end of the Victorian age.
Why a lawyer? My father died on the 6th May. He was 91. His passing brought to an end the second generation of lawyers in the family... and we are now into the fourth. I felt it appropriate to attempt a funeral oration, which left me with a huge feeling of inadequacy. My father was very strong on self-discipline and the kind of man who put himself second. The first generation of lawyers in my family were three brothers, John, James and Archie, who had seven sisters and originated from Fife. The eldest, John, started his own firm of solicitors in Weston Super Mare. The second Jim was a barrister and MP for Preston (who crossed the house,) and the youngest was my grandfather Archie, born in 1889 with the same initials and in the same year as Adolf Hitler. I cannot vouch for my great uncles as our paths did not cross, but there was a lot of
My grandfather was 20 years younger than his brother and worked for him. As Town Clerk of Devizes and “a clubbable man,” he was able to set up his own practice and attract friendly clients and loyal staff. My father, a guards officer, with his selfdiscipline and desire for perfection was a very good linguist and horseman. His friend Christopher French who joined the army in 1944 on the same day, was described by a national newspaper as “stiff-backed,” “well prepared” and “extremely studious.” It said you could pick him out as a guard’s officer. He was in fact a high court judge - but I can pick out several former army or naval officers who have been very successful solicitors and I would probably rate them higher than those with fancy degrees, because of their discipline and organisation. To be a successful solicitor, you need that discipline - and to be able to organise your day properly. In my case, I had none of these natural qualities! I like a game of chess though, and that may have set me up for civil litigation, which involves anticipating and “checking” the next
move from another litigator. My history degree has helped me see “beyond the long grass,” and this background assisted me in hearing cases at the bottom of the judicial ladder - but despite being pointed in the direction of advocacy in my early life, this was totally the wrong course for me. My grandfather and I liked the atmosphere of the court, but however much I prepared, case nerves would get the better of me and the result would be an embarrassment. Solicitor district judges would encourage solicitors to do their own advocacy, but I was never an actor - whilst my three sons were all good in their school plays. The consequence of this, is that my son Alex does have presentational qualities and has made a reasonably successful early career as a barrister. Michael Hodge, Lansdowne Legal

The Comic Book Workshop The first comic book workshop took place on Sunday the 21st of May at the Goods Shed Art Centre, and proved to be a very popular event, with both morning and afternoon sessions fully booked. Everyone who attended seemed to have a fantastic time and it was an event with a real “community” feel, with attendees of all ages, from Primary School children to retired people. Attendees created their own comic page, which some took home to finish and some left them behind for an exhibition planned to take place in the Tetbury Council Offices or Police Museum. Kevin Painter, who organised the event, said: “The response has been amazing, with lots of enthusiasm and real talent on show. Fantastic. Everyone seemed thrilled with the free graphic novels and comics for every age, and a visitor, Jo Ann, was quick to tell me how polite, well-behaved and enthusiastic everyone was. She was particularly amused to see how many fathers were enjoying their copy of the Beano!”

The Grenfell House disaster in Kensington has provided focus on fire safety and fire prevention.
On the other side of New Church Street lies the Grade Two listed St Saviours Church. Completed and consecrated in 1848 at a time when rich people paid for a pew in ‘the big church’ - St Marys’, St Saviours was for the poorer people who could not afford this charge, it became known as the little church for the poor.
Early warning of a fire in the home is all-important and many types of smoke alarms can be purchased. Did you know that our local fire service will carry out fire safety audits of your home? This audit will result in the provision of advice to increase safety where possible and even fit a modern smoke alarm. If you want to take
It was designed by the architect Samuel Daukes with Augustus Pugin (of Houses of Parliament fame) and John Hardiman designing and building the chancel roof. The interior of the church was lit by gas and the fittings can still be seen. The town’s burial ground is also part of the churchyard, and is the subject of local

interest because the Town Council are seeking to expand the available space by taking part of the Recreation Ground. The Council are discussing a two-stage plan, the first part is to expand the available space in the current burial ground by taking down two trees, one of which is dead, to add another twelve plots. At the current rate of use we will then have over two years supply of burial land. Councillor Hirst explains «C’est ma chaîne» to visiting French students
At the same time, we are planning expansion into the current recreation ground by taking up to 25 metres of space which will add at least another 30 internment spaces. We have been advised that the space that will be used was not part of the original recreation ground, but was bought by the Council in the 1970’s for future expansion of the burial area and was provided for sport until such time it was required for internments.

Geological advice is being obtained to confirm suitability of the land as a burial area and planning permission is being sought to provide change of use of the land from recreation ground to burial ground. The Town Council is confident that the new burial area will be complete before the existing burial ground is full. Following a successful Wacky Races and a rain interrupted but exciting Woolsack Day we come to the next traditional Tetbury event, the Summer Show on Sunday August the 13th. Let’s hope for warm sunny weather with a good attendance and that the parade through the town centre will be watched by a happy and cheerful audience. Have a great summer! Probus Sunshine, Strawberries and cream conjure up summer scenes at Wimbledon. Well, the sun shone but we only enjoyed our usual coffee and biscuits on the 18th of May, when Brian Partridge kept us entertained. He shared many personal stories describing his eleven years as a Wimbledon umpire and line judge. A former Gloucestershire county player himself, he then completed the training necessary and built up his experience at lesser tournaments before officiating at Wimbledon from 1992 to 2003.
Far less appealing than the prospect of strawberries and cream was the arrival of call-up papers. These required all healthy young men of 17 or over to serve in the Armed Forces for a period, which from October 1950 was extended to two years. Our member Brian Gammon, nobly taking the place of the planned speaker who had withdrawn, recalled on the 1st of June some of his experiences as a National Serviceman in the RAF in the early 1950’s. Initially the pay was one shilling a day! Humorous anecdotes flowed as he recounted his progress through periods at RAF Padgate, Wilmslow, St Athan and Upwood, including a posting to Egypt. Brian qualified as a skilled airframe mechanic (metal), and gave us an insight into some typical aircraft repairs. As an aside he mentioned an RAF technique to encourage voluntary services from airmen – time off, instead of three hours square-bashing. In his engaging talk, Brian said that food was better than civilian fare at the time, and 130208 GLC Williams

he made light of the less attractive aspects of his service. Members soon added their own service recollections – many like Brian’s. These memories had lingered long and well, conscription having ended over fifty years ago on the 31st December 1960. Thank you, Brian. Probus continues to be voluntary, of course. Future meetings include talks on music, films, China and Islam, as well as a visit to a vineyard. Watch this space! Or better still, come and join us. Theo Stening, Probus, 01666 504243 Page 1
G. L. C. & R. Williams Garden & Agricultural Gates & Fencing Rose Arches & Gazebos Field Shelters & Stables Wrought Iron Work Large Stock of Timber, Steel, Nuts & Bolts, Gate Fittings and Garden Tools Brian explained the responsibilities and court positions of line judges and umpires, the signals they used, and described the uniforms, all in a humorous way. One hour on court and one hour resting were apparently normal periods of duty. Secrets were shared about the hierarchy of line judges (from ‘L1’ up to ‘L5,’) based on experience and performance, and examples given of the quips they had to endure from players and spectators alike. We were reminded that the balls were made in the Philippines, were covered with Stroud-made cloth, and replaced after only seven games.

have up to ten people on the committee, so if you want to work in partnership with the practice to help improve healthcare in Tetbury, come along to the AGM.
The Minor Ailment Scheme
As all patients registered with the surgery are deemed to be members of the PPG, everyone is welcome to attend. To make sure that we have enough refreshments please let the surgery or Jennifer know if you are coming; it will be an informal meeting that isn’t expected to last more than an hour.
There is a national scheme which is now being rolled out across Gloucestershire, where you can go to see your pharmacist at Lloyds or Cohens to be treated for minor ailments, such as seasonal bites and stings, hay fever, athlete’s food and many more. See our blog post or The Waiting Room Files for a complete list - or ask at the chemist.
The committee isn’t at full strength - so if you are interested in finding out more about us, and potentially joining, do come along on the evening or contact Jennifer via email. You could also leave a message at the surgery and she will ring you back. We can
Only pharmacists that are fully trained to provide this service can do so. They can prescribe certain drugs, without you having to go back to see a GP or nurse practitioner to get a prescription. If you are exempt from paying NHS charges, you will still be able

Don’t worry about taking away business from the GPs, they are fully behind the scheme, as it will free them up from dealing with minor ailments. This should make it easier to get an appointment with the GPs when you really need one.
Choice+ and Extended Hours The Choice+ clinics are switching to Monday and Wednesday from 4 - 8 pm and Saturday 9 am – 1 pm. Additionally, the surgery offers extended hours appointments on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, for those that can’t access the surgery during the normal hours because of work or other commitments. And don’t forget you can access Choice+ clinics in other parts of the county as well, making it more convenient for those that work outside of Tetbury. Summer Show must have been grown in the exhibitors own garden or allotment. Where required, exhibitors submitting floral entries must supply their own plates, baskets or vases for the display. The schedule is available free of charge from Tetbury Hardware or tetburysummershow.co.uk and contains other important details, including the allimportant entry forms.
There are just a few weeks to go now … …before the annual family fun day that is the Tetbury Summer Show arrives, and final preparations are progressing well. The event owes much to the continued generosity of many businesses and organisation in Tetbury - in particular, IHS Markit, located at the top end of Cirencester Road.
This company has once again provided an outstanding donation, for which the committee remains very grateful. With the good weather we have been enjoying, and which is set to continue according to most reports, the marquee is sure to be hosting a brilliant display of carefully nurtured flowers, fruit and vegetables. For those that have yet to obtain a schedule, it is important that I remind you that in all the amateur classes, exhibits

It has long been a tradition of this event that any produce left by exhibitors at the end of the show is auctioned off to raise additional funds. While this has been quite successful, it has often been a time- consuming process and so a change has now been implemented. This year, anybody who wants to buy produce that has been left need only make a donation, to secure the desired item(s). We’re hoping that this will not only save time, but also encourage more people to stay and see what high-quality food and vegetables are on show, and which may be secured for a relatively modest sum. There are already a dozen stalls booked to attend, and this will of course increase nearer the day, as confidence grows about the weather conditions. For those that are entering the Fun Dog Show that starts at 2.00 pm, (or owners of any pets, for that matter,) you may be interested to know that Bath Country Pets will have a stall offering advice and a range of pet foods. There will always be room for any local crafts people to have a stall too, so please look at the web page and download an application form. To keep you amused during the afternoon, the land train will be back - and will as usual be very busy, giving rides to all family members. In addition, and probably for the last time, we welcome the return of Spider Mountain. It looks easy, but this is a challenge for most age groups, as you have to negotiate a tricky vertical climb through webbing before coming down the slide. In addition, and provided we can satisfy some important safety issues, we hope to be offering visitors the chance to have a go at archery - something that will appeal to all age groups. We look forward to seeing you on the recreation ground on Sunday 13th August.

News from St Marys’ Church
July brings plenty of opportunities to party at St Marys’ Church!
Do please join us for all these celebrations. I look forward to seeing you there.
We are preparing for our annual Summer Fete on Saturday the 22nd July. It’s held in the Vicarage garden, with lots of stalls, a dog show and delicious cream teas. Not to be missed. Earlier in the month, we have a lovely celebration on Sunday 2nd July at our 10.00 am service, when Leah Neale will be confirmed by Bishop Christopher, Honorary Assistant Bishop in Gloucester Diocese. Confirmation is an important step in the Christian journey: it is the time when, as adults, we chose to confirm our belief in the promises made on our behalf at baptism as a baby or child. People often talk about their doubts about being ready to take this step. I try to assure them that even the greatest of saints feel unworthy! We can only ask for God’s grace to be the very best we can be, and for forgiveness when we fail. To be confirmed, we don’t need to be perfect. We just need to be sincere in our commitment to growing in faith.
With love and prayers, Poppy Now … over to Rob … It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself as the new Curate here in Tetbury, and of course also Beverston, Long Newnton and Shipton Moyne. I am a brand new member of the clergy who will be with you for about three years; our wonderful parish priest Poppy Hughes has the task of forming me into a fully-fledged vicar by the time I leave!
Finally, we are planning another party on Sunday 23rd July to welcome our new Curate, Rob Church (great name, isn’t it). You will see a short note here from Rob, introducing himself. And then we are having a special welcome service at St Marys’ followed by lunch on Sunday 23rd July. And the festivities begin at at 10.30 am.
I have spent the past three years training at a theological college just outside Oxford, where I read for a degree in theology. Before that I spent a year on the staff of Derby Cathedral. Prior to that I attended university in London, and then worked for a time at the House of Commons. I am married to Francesca, who I met at university. She is currently finishing a PhD, which means she is far more intelligent than I am.
Tetbury Sports Massage Helping you to get the most out of your body
I will be ordained as a deacon by the Bishop Rachel in Gloucester Cathedral on the 16th of July, and if you feel you are able to I would be very grateful for your prayers. A deacon is called to act as a link between the church and the community, so please do feel free to talk to me whenever you see me.
I feel very lucky to have been offered to spend my curacy in such a special place, with such beautiful churches with lots going on in them. I grew up in Cirencester, so returning to the Cotswolds is very much a homecoming for me. It will be wonderful to be reacquainted with the area, not to mention its hostelries.

Tetbury Goods Shed The sun is out, and we’ve got a fun-packed summer coming up at The Shed! Volunteers have been busy kitting out our kitchen, in preparation for the opening of The Goods Shed’s Café. Our aim is to provide simple, delicious food using local, seasonal produce. The kitchen itself is fabulous and will be a wonderfully inspiring environment for our team to work in, ensuring the Café becomes a hub for locals and tourists alike. We do hope you will pop along as soon as we’re open, to enjoy a cuppa and cake. Whilst writing we want to take the opportunity to thank Steve Yapp and his team from Speller Metcalfe. They have been responsible for installing the sound and light excluders around our huge wooden entrance doors. This means our building is better sound proofed for music events and lively theatre. Our Volunteer Office is now open for business from Monday to Saturday, between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm, so you can pop in to see us and we’ll always have a volunteer there waiting. Perhaps you want to ask about how to become a volunteer?
Or you’re already working for us and want to put your name down for an event? We’d be delighted to see you. And when you’re there next, you may even notice our Hare! We’re taking part in the Cotswold Hare Trail. Our stunning and very colourful Hare has been designed and painted by Stroud artist, Ed Swarez. There are eighty-four of them to be found in twenty-eight villages and towns around the Cotswolds and each is individually decorated. The trail runs until September, after which the Hares will go to auction with the net profits going to charity. This summer we’ve gone workshoptastic with loads to keep you and the kids occupied during the holidays. Starting on the 2nd of July, we’re celebrating the Japanese craft technique of ‘Hapa Zome.’ It’s a form of ‘natural printing’ achieved by beating leaves and flowers with hammers, which pounds natural pigment into cloth. Then towards the end of July, on the 22nd, we’re learning all about Alpacas with our Alpaca Wool Weaving Workshop. One for the children in the morning and one for the adults in the afternoon. In August, we’re launching our Hysterical Historical series of theatre and craft workshops. Three separate days, each celebrating a part of British history with a short theatre production, followed by an arts and craft workshop. Perfect family entertainment for children aged four and above. And for the ‘crafty’ adults among us,
you may want to take part in our three-day Stone Carving Workshop under the care of experienced sculptors, Pat Way and Will Whitmore. This August workshop offers a fun and practical approach to learning about the techniques and tools used to carve stone. Suitable for beginners, as well as for more experienced sculptors. You can find out all about these events as well as everything else we have happening on our website www.shed-arts.co.uk or from the leaflet inside this month’s Tetbury Advertiser. Tetbury Goods Shed

Since my last article, members have attended a number of events in our community… …and this included the Lions Club organised Tetbury Care Day, which brought organisations from within our community together with professional bodies, to look at how we can provide the best care for all our
residents. This was a really useful day and I am sure that we will all benefit from this initial meeting and its findings in the future. Dr Tony Walsh gave a very successful talk to the Malmesbury Probus Club on our history and another talk is planned for Westonbirt Ladies this month. If you are part of a group who would welcome an interesting, historic talk, please contact us directly via our website. We are planning to bring The Market Hall into the 21st Century by installing Wi-Fi,
The Feoffees and the Thirteen however, as you can imagine getting this in an historic, listed building is proving to be a challenge, however we will be shortly testing systems and look forward to updating you in the near future.

Tetbury Camera Club Have a try at snapping under the cover of darkness. There’s never a dull moment if you’re a member of Tetbury Camera Club. We might have just finished the winter/spring season with our annual photography exhibition in the town Market Hall, but a keen photographer doesn’t pack up his bag because summer is here. Within two weeks we had already embarked on a splendid programme of casual summer evening shoots - the time of year when any member can suggest a subject for an evening, or even for an allday assignment. The first of these outings took us to Painswick, a spot almost as attractive as Tetbury, though the people who live there might well argue that in the scenic town stakes the awards should be in reverse order.
The Club’s market hall exhibition, which is timed to coincide with the famous Woolsack Races, has become a popular additional event on the bank holiday Monday, with visitors as well as locals attending it. This year we had attendees
not just from neighbouring towns and counties, but from as far afield as Newcastle and Nottingham. On average, it draws between 450 and 550 spectators, taking a relaxing break from the various athletic exertions of the Woolsack. This year the weather wasn’t very kind to the runners, but the pictures we had on display afforded a welcome refuge to those taking a break from the wind and rain. Already on the agenda for coming weeks are Corsham, Burford, Cheltenham, and nearer to home, Westonbirt, then Sharpness docks. By the way if you’re the kind of photographer who tends to dust off the camera primarily in time for the holiday season, don’t be put off if you are going to sunnier countries, where dusk often starts earlier than here in the UK. If you give it a try you’ll find that with the miracles of digital technology, some of the most dramatic shots can be captured at night. The one with this article was taken by member Jennie Esse on a trip to Japan earlier this year.

You’ll find it’s quite possible to achieve something similar if you decide to be bold and set the camera to manual, then find somewhere to rest it steadily. Raise the ISO level, to 800 or more, or alternatively, lower it to 100 if you have one with an adjustable aperture. In which case try a variety of shutter speeds and aperture openings and see what you capture. You could well end up with a creative surprise. One of the great things about modern digital cameras is it doesn’t cost you anything to experiment. You can simply delete what you don’t like, and start again. And if you fancy joining our group, put September the 12th in your diary and come along to The Priory for our regular Tuesday evening sessions. New faces are always welcome. You’ll find more information about what we have planned as well as photography tips on our web site: tetburycameraclub.org.uk Iain Smyth, Tetbury Camera Club

Tetbury in Bloom This year marks eight years of Tetbury in Bloom Open Gardens Day – where has the time gone? It is a rare privilege to be invited into private gardens not normally open to the public. Come along to gain inspiration, talk to garden enthusiasts or simply to enjoy a wonderful day out. Open Gardens Day is the perfect example of team work and a great example of what can be achieved when different local people and groups pull together. By that I mean the creativity, perspiration and dedication of the residents who generously open their gardens. The support of the Feoffees who allow us to use the Market House for the day, the expertise of the Women’s Institute who will be serving refreshments and a large selection of delicious cakes, all combined with the organisational expertise and warm hearted-ness of the TiB committee. A very big thank you to everyone involved. The £5 entry fee will gain you access to all eight wonderful gardens (five of which
have never been open before.) They are 21 Northfield Road, Di and Mont Bryan The Garden House, Northfield Road, Mary Lennie - 14 Courtfield, Joan and Mike Kniveton - Prince Court, Hampton Street - Five Trees Close, Chavenage Lane - 3 Newleaze Gardens, Sue and Charlie Grene - Close House, Close Gardens, Audrey and Roy Angell and 16 Close Gardens, Pam Cleaver. There is also the bonus of visiting our very own Anniversary Gardens, located in Eccles Court between The Ferns and The Chipping. This is a public garden we tend throughout the year. Tickets will be available on the day from a stall outside the Market House, or from any of the private gardens themselves. For more details or to download a map in advance please visit our website, www. tetburyinbloom.org.uk We are delighted to announce that our ‘sister’ organisation, ‘Christmas in Tetbury’ has been selected as one of three local community good causes in the Tesco Bags of Help Grant Scheme. If you’d like to help raise the funds needed to pay for the reinstallation of the Christmas lights and fund the Community Switch On event, which this year will be held on Thursday 7th December, then please add your token to the ‘Christmas in Tetbury’ box, located at Tesco Tetbury, during July and August– many thanks!. Footpath Clearance The last couple of months has been the time of year when vegetation is growing really fast, particularly from hedgerows around footpath stiles. All too quickly the stile and footpath route becomes hidden in the undergrowth. I have spent some time on footpath clearance in the fields around Tetbury and surrounding villages, particularly Long Newnton.
Drystone Walling In the work party, we have completed rebuilding the collapsed wall alongside the pathway below Bath Road Bridge in Tetbury. We have returned to Newark Park, at the request of the National Trust, to rebuild several more sections of their field boundary wall, to keep the sheep out of the woods.
Other Jobs The best part of the job is the lovely locations. We have done more clearance at Uley Bury to maintain the views and at Brackenbury Ditches Iron Age Hill Fort to reveal the ramparts and fortifications. We have renewed two stiles on footpaths at Luckington.
Local Walks As there is no Advertiser in August, here are the next two months’ worth of local circular walks lead by the Wardens.

St Mary’s Playgroup As we race into the final half term of this academic year… …the children are looking forward to playing in our improved outdoor space they have also enjoyed splashing in the puddles and painting with water in the rain this term. And in the moments of sunshine we have also had a reading area with beanbags and books, as well as a writing table and music outside too! The caterpillars have now graduated to beautiful painted lady butterflies and have been released much to the children’s delight. We have also seen the tadpoles emerge into frogs and these are now ready to be released with a few of the larger ones being kept back to observe for a few more weeks before the summer holidays. The children have loved seeing how these creatures have developed and having discussions about them – it’s such a handson and visual experience for them to see the life cycles in real time. Alongside looking at how our creatures have grown we have also talked about who we look like with photos of our own Mummy’s and Daddy’s and have been led by their interests to provide some exciting role play areas - particularly a sandwich shop (with real food that was enjoyed too) and a large- scale builders yard with ‘cement’ and bricks to boot. Leading on from their interests in ‘emergencies’ this term we are focusing on people who help us - starting with the fire service before moving onto the police. The children have built a huge fire engine, which they have now painted and enjoyed pretending to fight fires with their own ‘breathing apparatus’ and ‘burning buildings’! We can’t wait to visit the Fire Station next week as well.
lovely mum and Playgroup Deputy, Kelly, who every week offers fresh and exciting activities that the children love exploring, as well as always greeting everyone through the door with a welcoming smile and an ear to listen. At the end of last half term our preschool children absolutely loved having our first fire at Forest School over which they toasted marshmallows on their own whittled sticks. A big thank you to Timberpride for the continued supply of wood for these sessions. Every week the children lead the Forest School session in a different and exciting direction, and every week we see them grow in confidence and independence. We are also extremely grateful to St Mary’s Primary School for sharing their Forest School site with us, which provides such fantastic opportunities and regular exposure for the children to the school site, too. Our Seedlings group continues every Monday morning from 9.30 to 11.30 am at the front of the Christ Church (and now will for the next year!). It is run by our

Tetbury Classic Car Show
The show was started in 2012 as a spin-off from the Roses School show in Stroud, chiefly in support of a children’s charity called “Allsorts.” Their web site http://allsortsglos.org.uk/ - details the support they provide to children with disabilities or additional needs, and to their families. They are a very important local charity we’re very proud to support. The car show is important to them in turn, since they survive on donations only. Funds from the show also go to support Tetbury’s Sir William Romney’s School, who rent us their sports fields for the occasion. We’re a nonprofit event. This year we’ll be at SWRS on September the third. The Tetbury Classic Car Show has grown from those humble 2012 beginnings on the Rec. to now boast the attendance of more than 700 classic vehicles, lots of interesting stands and new car franchises – and most importantly 3,000 plus visitors. We think we’re already the biggest show in Gloucestershire and will continue to increase numbers, where sensible – and where interruption to life in Lowfield Road and the surrounding area can be kept at a minimum. The show is supported in the local media and with a show programme - and this year we’ll be pleased to welcome Radio Gloucestershire who will be broadcasting live from the grounds. Last year we distributed well over £5,000 in funds while also reinvesting in materials to make the show easier to attend and more professional. This year we’re hoping to do better. Our team remains small – there are just five of us in the core group – but we’re fortunate to get the support of Tetbury Lion’s club and the Rotary Club of the South Cotswolds on the weekend of the show, to manage the crowds and the traffic. More about us, the event and the schedule on our web site, here: http://www.tetburyclassiccarshow.org/ Thank you very much for your support in the past – we sincerely hope you can attend again this year. At present in the crèche they are doing lots activities linked to the theme of summer and making the most of the outdoor space. We will be pretending to go to the beach, camping out and having picnics at snack time. We will also be creating a summer display using all the children’s craft work. In the last week of term we will be having a beach themed party week, where staff and children get to dress up. The playgroup has been busy raising money for the new windows, before the half term holiday we had a danceathon and cake sale, which went really well. The first Friday back after the break we did a mini afternoon fete after school, it was lovely to see the sun out and lots of past, present and future families come along to join in the fun. The pre-school children are now fast approaching the end of their time with us; coming up for them is our annual preschool sports day and the end of term party with presentation of their special red mark making books etc. We would like to wish all our leavers good luck in their new schools.

They are facilitating access to all the care agencies available to us in Tetbury by bringing them together on a website. Their workshop on June 3rd was attended by two of our members who were very impressed with the range of speakers and how well the day was organised, Thank you to Steve Parr who came to speak at our June meeting to update us on progress. We shall also be supporting Tetbury in Bloom Open Gardens again this year on Sunday, July 30th. At the Market Hall we’ll be providing refreshments all day. All the money we raise will be donated to Tetbury in Bloom so please come along and join us. At our meeting in May we voted for the resolutions which will be discussed at the National Federation meeting. In June our speaker was Kerry Waite. She is a fund raiser for Hope for Tomorrow, the charity which provides mobile chemotherapy units, the world’s first ever mobile cancer treatment units, run in partnership with the NHS. Apart from the donation we gave, our members spontaneously donated even more at the end of the evening as Hope for Tomorrow relies entirely on voluntary donations. Our next meeting will be on July 10th when the speaker will be Jo Mansell of the Cirencester Furniture Bank. As usual it will take place at the Dolphins’ Hall at 7.30pm. Our coffee morning will be on July 24th, 10.30 am at the Snooty Fox. We always welcome new members and visitors. Tetbury WI

Good news! We have weekend openings on the second Saturday of each month this summer. This trial started on the 10th of June when we had over 35 visitors. The next dates are the 8th of July, the 12th of August and the 12th of September, when we will be open from 10.00 to 3.00 pm. If you haven’t been before, do pop along and see what we have to offer; if you have, then come and see what’s changed! Ever wondered what the history is, of a building in the town? Well, it’s quite

We have been in discussion with the Gloucestershire Police Archives and agreed that they can borrow our manual photo-fit system, to make up a replica system for use by children. We would then have a copy to use in the museum. We’re also discussing an illustrated board, with face cut-outs for photo opportunities - again, with the intention of us having a copy. We hope these initiatives work out well, as we’re always on the lookout for ways to make our displays more interesting and interactive. It must be time for another Cold Case File! A Foul Murder on the Cotswold Hills, 1902. On 15 August 1902, at around midday, a shepherd who worked at Saddleworth Farm, between Didmarton and Leighterton, in Gloucestershire, was walking along the road when he noticed a trail of blood and some skid marks, which looked like they had been made by a bicycle pedal. Following the trail, he came across the body of a man hidden in a copse. The police were called, and they found that the man had been shot in the head from behind. A bicycle was found in a nearby quarry. The deceased person was quickly identified as Mr John Dudley Scott, who had recently
taken up residence at the Priory in Horsley. Scott’s life-long friend, William Williams, had been staying at the Priory for a while. Scott’s wife and two children were away at the time. On 14 August, after dinner, the two men went out on a bicycle ride, as they often did in the evening. Williams returned to the Priory alone at about half past eleven, changed his clothes, then went off on his bicycle again. The police discovered that Williams had cycled to Stroud, where he had caught a train to London. Passing on this information to the Metropolitan Police, Williams was traced to a hotel in Dover Street, Piccadilly. He was found in his room, dead, having shot himself with a revolver. An inquest was held on the body of John Dudley Scott at Hawkesbury Upton, in Gloucestershire. The verdict reached was that Scott had been unlawfully killed by William Williams. The coroner commented that it was a very sad case, and because of the suicide of Williams, the reasons for his crime would never be known. News! Dolphins Hall
We are delighted to say that the Dolphins Hall is heading back to how it was in the good old days now, with lots of activities. We have already staged several ‘ad hoc’ family parties and they have proved very successful. Children enjoy the children’s disco with popcorn and candy floss, while parents can keep an eye on their children and enjoy a drink from our fully stocked bar. Weekends are now almost fully booked too, to the end of the year, with private parties for all ages – and once a month D. J. Lightning is putting on a regular monthly family disco. During the days, we are also busy with various Yoga and Pilates classes available. On the same day as our Annual General Meeting, plans for the extension of the Dolphins Hall were passed, so we can move forward - however, we need to phase in the refurbishment and building of the extension, due to the timing of the funds available to us. At the AGM, we also welcomed three new Trustees; Mark Wood and Colin Turley are both representing residents and Alex Evans will represent the Cricket Club. Mark has already taken on organising our Facebook presence. Entente Cordiale Last year Tetbury was invited to take part in France’s “Fête Nationale,” which had twenty-three countries taking part. On a return visit in May, French children joined Tetbury children for a weekend of sports and fun arranged primarily by Richard Norris and Ian Fletcher, together with a team of willing helpers. On the evening of the 26th of May, the French arrived in Tetbury and things got off to a good start with a good old British supper provided by Selina of ‘Tetbury Fish & Chips,’ who kindly prepared thirty portions. They were eagerly consumed by the hungry children and their teachers, and by the Mayoress of Châtillon and the President of BerryTouraine, who also travelled with them. Well fed, then it was off to bed - camping on the Memorial Recreation Ground under very smart tents kindly supplied by Richard Morgan of Pillows, Tetbury. Richard, Sarah, James and Sophie, Dave, Claire and family and Ian and Vicky and family all very kindly stayed in caravans nearby during the four nights, to make sure the children were both safe and happy.
www.dolphinshalltetbury.co.uk
Saturday morning was taken up with a conference for the young and Councillor Stephen Hirst, Mayor of Tetbury, opened proceedings by welcoming everyone from Châtillon. The visiting Mayoress gave insight into the purpose of making partnerships with different countries, and the President of Berry-Touraine emphasised that the visit was not about “twinning,” but about the young people of today creating relationships with other countries forming a partnership for the future. Councillor Hirst and the Mayor of Châtillon-Sur-Indre signed a “Partnership Agreement,” to benefit of the children of both towns. We owe a large debt of thanks to the Mayor of Châtillon for arranging EU funding. Following the conference, the children enjoyed lunch, followed by a Sports Extravaganza and a barbecue and disco. On Sunday, everyone enjoyed a day at the Cotswold Water Park, breaking for a picnic lunch organised by a volunteer team of local Mums, together with Tina Stephenson and myself. Later, it was back to Tetbury for a supper kindly organised by Sandra Ball. Monday, despite the rain, everyone enjoyed taking part in the Woolsack Races. The news that two of the French children had come in second and third was of course greeted with great excitement! On their last night together, the children enjoyed another barbecue and were joined by many more parents and

Tetbury children. Then came Tuesday morning, with a coach arriving at The Dolphins Hall at nine o’clock to be greeted by tears from both the French and Tetbury children alike, at the impending departure. It was an emotional time for everyone, saying goodbye after what had proved to be a wonderful long weekend. To show their appreciation the Mayor and Mayoress presented helpers with a present from Châtillon – and many thanks are due to Tetbury Town Council, the Feoffees, Tetbury Lions and all the private individuals who donated not just financially, but who also put in so much of their time in helping with feeding the children, helping with the washing up and affording the entertainment. The list is truly endless but special thanks to Caroline Morgan, who was in Tesco at 7.00 am each morning, collecting croissants and baguettes for breakfast If you’d like to the watch some of the events of the weekend, James Norris has a video on You Tube. And finally! We would like to thank all the people of Tetbury and surrounding areas for supporting us, and helping in the continued success of the Dolphins Hall. We look forward to a bright future, with the Dolphins Hall once again becoming a central hub for the community. Maggie Heaven, Chair of Dolphins Hall

Insect bites and stings Most bites or stings will cause a small red swelling in the skin but occasionally they can result in a swelling of the face and neck leading to excessive itching or discomfort. Very rarely your pet can have an allergic reaction and show symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or distress. Contact your vet immediately if you are concerned.
Dr Emma Pemberthy - BVM BVS MRCVS The George Veterinary Hospital Tetbury branch 01666 503531 SUMMER HAZARDS FOR PETS
Summer provides many opportunities to get outside with your pets but there are a few things to watch out for. Heatstroke Signs of heatstroke in dogs and cats include excessive panting, salivation, distressed behaviour and collapse. Older or overweight pets, or those with conditions such as heart disease, laryngeal paralysis or asthma are more at risk. If you think your pet has heatstroke you can: • • • • •
Provide cool water or add ice cubes to their water bowl Use a fan to provide cool air Keep them in the shade Cover them with wet towels Contact your vet if symptoms are severe or don’t resolve quickly
Avoid heatstroke by exercising your dog during the cooler parts of the day (e.g. first thing in the morning or late evening) and always have water available to drink. And please never leave your pet in a car during warm weather; even with the windows down the temperature inside the car will quickly exceed that outside the vehicle – it’s distressing for the pet and potentially fatal.
BBQs As tempting as it is to share titbits from your BBQ it can create problems for any pet. Unfamiliar or fatty foods can cause an upset stomach and hot food can cause scalding of the mouth and throat. Ensure your pet doesn’t have access to any alcohol or articles that won’t pass easily through the gut such as corn cobs, cooked bones (these can shatter easily) or kebab sticks. If your pet is sitting in the sun they may need protection with a pet-safe sunscreen. White animals or those with exposed pink skin are most at risk. Fly Strike Don’t forget your rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets this summer. Fly strike is caused when flies lay eggs on your pet and the hatching maggots eat the skin and underlying tissues. It is a very painful condition that can develop in just a few hours and can cause death if not treated urgently. Contact your vet as soon as you notice your pet has fly strike. But to help prevent it you can: • Check your pet’s bottom and above the tail at least twice daily • Make sure they are clean and dry • Check for and remove dirty bedding • Apply a product to help stop flies laying eggs • Check there is nothing preventing your pet from grooming such as obesity, arthritis or dental disease Contact your veterinary practice for further advice on any of these topics and we trust you will enjoy another glorious British summer! Our May Theatre trip was to the New Theatre in Oxford. We left Tetbury at 10.00 am on a beautiful morning, which gave us time in Oxford for a browse around the shops and for lunch. Some of us took the opportunity to visit the botanical gardens, before going to the matinee. The play we went to see was “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time,” which
Tetbury Theatre Group was written as a best-selling novel by Mark Haddon and adapted as a play by Simon Stephens. I had read the book and could not imagine how it would be adapted to a play, since it is about a 15-year-old boy with Asperger’s Syndrome, who attends a special school because of his behaviour problems. He is supremely logical in two different ways, however. Firstly, he is brilliant at mathematics and able to take his A-level examination three years earlier than is usual, since he derives a sense of peace and satisfaction from mathematics. In another way, he can use logic to work out accurately “how things happen.” It was amazing how it was shown what was happening “in his head,” with the use of very clever lightening effects and props – and the lead actor was excellent, making it a great play to watch.

Our July trip is to the Watermill Theatre at Newbury to see “Nesting,” which looks like an amusing play – and the Watermill really is a lovely theatre. On Saturday the 19th of August we are undertaking a London trip, which is “coach only,” and attendees will be able to see and do whatever suits them, for instance theatre or museums trips, perhaps shopping or trip on the Thames. Tetbury Library Libraries … where adventures happen. Kristin A. Oakley This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme is Animal Agents! So there will be
some sleuthing (and even a bit of slothing!) with a wild flavour at Tetbury Library over the next few months. There will be an opportunity to track some animals (perhaps the likes of which have never before been seen in Tetbury!). Plus the perfect vantage point: a wildlife watcher’s hide in the corner of the Children’s Zone. With Tetbury’s lack of beaches making it difficult for many to take part in the Shark Trust’s ‘Great Eggcase Hunt’, the charity has kindly given us an
indoor version to do in the library (with free eggcase identification leaflets for the first fifteen completing families!). The reading challenge itself encourages and rewards 4 to 11 year olds for borrowing six books (fiction, non-fiction or audio books) between 15th July and 9th September. Anyone can sign up for the challenge and it doesn’t matter if the child reads the books themselves or the book is read to them. There will be a different, drop-in activity running throughout each week: 15th – 21st July: Sea Skate Kites 22nd – 28th July: Fun Felt Puppets 29th July – 4th August: Enchanting Elmer 5th – 11th August: Jungle Rowdy Rainmakers 12th – 18th August: Slow, Slow, Sloth 19th – 25th August: Adventurous Animal Masks 26th August – 1st September: Glorious Glow-in-the-dark Fireflies 2nd – 9th September: Maui Animal Markers

Tetbury Art Society With the Spring Exhibition and the May meeting behind us, we now enter a quieter period. We have a fair number of demonstrations over the year, but our June meeting is traditionally used for us to bring along our own in-progress paintings and work on them in a sociable atmosphere. Last year we had a loss of electricity mid-evening but this year there were no problems and members were able to work or to both work and chat throughout the session.
in July and August as the weather permits; the sites must be visually interesting, but also easily accessible for those members who are not as agile as they once were. So far, in mid-June, we have identified three places with interesting buildings - but we need to select some different challenges too. This should not be too hard, given the glorious countryside we have in this area. Members will also be busy working on paintings for our August Exhibition over the long Summer Bank Holiday – Saturday 26th until Monday 28th August. We continue to display our work in Tetbury Hospital, and a percentage of sales is
donated to help keep the hospital looking after our community. September will see us go back to meeting indoors again, with the start of our autumn programme. As I am writing this, it seems so far off! More information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666503926. You will find that we are a friendly group, welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached. Michael Kingham, Tetbury Art Society

Beverston is almost within walking distance from Tetbury, but fifty HOTS members travelled there by car on the 1st of June. Brian and Pam Blackah, who live in the village, had prepared notes and illustrations to supplement their excellent talk. Inevitably they concentrated our attention on the Castle. There were probably early Motte and Bailey earthworks and timber built castles before Maurice de Gaunt
rebuilt here in stone, circa 1220. His building has a roughcast finish, so can be distinguished from later cut or ashlared stone used by Thomas Berkeley in the 14th century. Today, the castle is in a poor state of repair so visitors are no longer admitted. In fact, the south west tower is held together with a strong chain! Sadly, therefore, we did not see the spectacular views in all directions from the top of the highest tower. At the west end and in the garden, there are clear remains of the inner moat that surrounded the castle. The remains of the
History of Tetbury Society 14th century gatehouse was explained to us and we needed some imagination, as little remains of the left side tower. Between the two gatehouse towers in which guards were stationed there was, firstly, a drawbridge over the moat. Then, after about a 3-yard gap, a portcullis could be lowered to provide a second defence of the entrance. Grooves in the walls show where this was. There was a second moat near the main road; both drain down into the brook that flows to Cutwell. Many changes have been made over the years, particularly since the fire in 1691 that gutted the building and destroyed the banqueting hall. The existing 17th century house is built into the castle, but the property to the right is quite modern. This property has been used for farming for many years and owned by Holford of Westonbirt when he foreclosed on a loan in

1845/50. He had new cottages built, but the location of the original village is uncertain. We were reminded of the story of the Parliamentarians occupying the castle, when the Royalist officer had gone to visit a lady at Chavenage House. Also, we were told that Lord Berkeley, whose family owned the property for 500 years, had to sell in 1597 when he lost a case of wife kidnap. His young wife was taken off riding on the back of her lover’s horse clutching the rider. Had it really been kidnap, it was adjudged, she would have ridden in front of the rider! Then we crossed to view St. Mary’s church. The direction sign on the main road points to a Norman Church, but there is little obvious Norman work to be seen, except for a small window in the north wall. The carving on the south side of the tower is Saxon. Many changes were made to the church by Lewis Vulliamy, Holford’s architect; the floor was raised, for instance, and the ancient wall pictures cleaned off. On the 6th of July, we’re going to Beckford’s Tower and Museum at Lansdown, Bath to meet the curator, Amy Frost. All are welcome but there is a charge of £4 per head. Cars will leave the Chipping at 6.30 pm. Alan Twelvetree,, History of Tetbury Society

Leighterton Primary School Behind the scenes, there are lots of people who work extremely hard to make Leighterton Primary School special. One group of people who do this are school governors - people who wish to make a positive contribution to children’s education. Together with the Headteacher, they set the future direction of the school and decide how the school’s budget should be spent. Governing bodies make decisions collectively on matters such as school policies and the school’s development plan.
A Double Glazing Service that you can rely on... • Heritage Cottage Windows • Reversible Windows
Our governors are each members of one or more committees, which have responsibility for an aspect of the governing body’s work. The Premises and Resources Committee is responsible for overseeing the financial management of the school and for all matters concerning the school premises. The Curriculum and Standards Committee is responsible for overseeing the school curriculum and the way it is implemented. Governors also have individual responsibility for other aspects of governance. We are currently recruiting co-opted governors to represent the wider community. If you are interested in finding out more about the role then our governors would be very happy to give you more information. They can be contacted via Mrs Davey in the school office on (01666) 890273 or through our website – www. leighterton.com. Meryl Hatfield, Leighterton Primary School

Governors monitor and support the teaching team and Headteacher in the implementation of the plan to improve - ensuring that the best possible opportunities are on offer for our children at Leighterton and that learning, achievement and progress are maximised. Within this role they support but they also challenge, developing and reviewing policies and procedures and holding the Headteacher to account by acting as a ‘critical friend’. Governors undergo training to help them carry out this role. Our governing body is made up of different categories of governors: Parent governors who are elected by parents and carers of children at the school - Staff governors who are selected by election from the staff team at school - Co-opted governors who are appointed by the governing body to represent the wider community - and Local Authority governors, who are appointed by the Local Authority.

Computer Advice After the recent Ransomware attacks on the NHS, could it happen to you?
Ramsomeware is usually spread via a web link or email attachment. There is only one way to recover your data without paying these scum and that is to use your backup, which you are doing regularly aren’t you? Even if you are, do not leave your backup drive connected to your computer as it will also encrypt that too! In fact, it will encrypt all data connected to your PC and possibly on your entire network (if you have one). This does not just affect business users but those of you at home as well. So if the children’s laptop is infected, your computer probably will be too!
0600717
I last covered this subject at the beginning of the year, but it really hit the headlines when the NHS was so badly affected, so here is an update. when opening attachments, and only open them if you are certain you are expecting it and you really need the data. Never click on web links from emails. If you must, hover your mouse over the link and look at the web address it points to, before taking the plunge! It really is not worth the risk. You must make sure Windows Update is working correctly as it is imperative you receive important security updates and patches, or you will be at risk. If you are not running Windows 10, it would be worth considering a free upgrade as it is the most secure version. I can give you a free upgrade if you cover my time to carry out the work. This will also prolong the serviceable life of your computer, particularly if you are using Windows 7, which expires in less than 3 years.
Online cloud storage such as Dropbox, One Drive and Google Drive are also vulnerable. If you use a dedicated online backup service, they usually save previous versions of files, so if you do not spot the infection straightaway, you may still be OK. However, For better email protection, do make sure most antivirus software will not detect it you have turned off your preview screen 140208 Classic Windows 22/2/08 22:04 Page 1 until it is too late, so do be super vigilant to make sure the emails are not opened by
default and you have the opportunity to delete suspicious ones immediately. If you are not regularly backing up, please do take a moment to copy your important stuff to a USB stick or external drive. Let me know if you need a hand with this or some software to synchronise your backup so that any new files are added and old ones removed automatically. It really does make the job so easy. Of course, do disconnect your backup from the PC when it is complete. If you have any queries or would like to book your PC in for a security check or an annual service: Please contact Nic on 01666 502067, mail@ inghamassociates.com or go to www. tetburycomputershop.co.uk Ingham Associates, THE TETBURY COMPUTER SHOP Now in my 29th year of Trading

Ben’s DIY SOS
in the best light, perhaps, to show that we can also be a caring bunch of people.” As the work came to a close, we sent a lastminute round-robin to our own advertisers, for carpenters and decorators to help finish on time. It was very quickly and selflessly answered by Thornbury and Pearce and by Rob Tupper, from Corinium Paints. Well done lads – and to all the other volunteers who stepped in to help.
As many regular readers will know, Ben Wernham, (unfortunate victim of a holiday accident and recipient of your generous donations via the Tetbury Lions and the Wacky Races,) had the DIY SOS team at his house in Avening this June, spiffing things up and making sure he will be able to access his new rooms and new facilities via wheelchair. I popped down to see how things were going on two occasions, and chanced to meet up with not only the stars of the show Mr Nick
We do hope that Ben, Ella, Olivia and Iris all enjoy the benefits of the hard work of the DIY SOS team. Helped by selfless locals like Gary and Rob, finally Ben really has been able to return home. Knowles and Mr Billy Byrne (a very gracious man indeed,) but also with one of our own local stars, Gary Wedge.
Advertiser Reporter
Gary’s a Tetbury native with both project and site management expertise in the building trade, so when he read Advertiser coverage about Ben and the advert from the SOS team looking for tradesmen, he was inspired to help, as many other locals have also been. He approached his employers (Taylor Wimpey of Bristol,) to take time off to help with “the build,” and when I happened to visit I found him fully involved with the very large DIY SOS team. I asked Gary why the urge to muck in, and he told me: “It’s great to be given the opportunity to able to make a difference to Ben’s life directly – and since builders and the trade generally are not always regarded

Tetbury Community Choir have been busy getting ready for The Upton Upon Severn Choir Festival. On a very wet Bank holiday Monday 29th May, twenty-two members of our choir, plus of course our musical director Richard George and some supporters, boarded a coach at Tesco. We arrived at St Peter and St Paul’s Church at noon and learned the order of the day, taking advantage of the wonderful selection of drinks, homemade cakes and other delicious goodies. Before the main event we all warmed up with a song about reindeer herding, led by Hanley Voices, last year’s outstanding choir. The Mayor of Upton then opened
the festival. The choirs attending were Diatonic, Sing it loud, Powick Community Choir, Tetbury Community Choir, Droitwich Spa Community Choir and Village Voices. We listened to the first two choirs, then whilst Powick were singing we got “tuned up” in the nearby church hall, before returning to perform. I had to lead the choir out, and we sang “Get Happy,” “My God Called Me This Morning,” “The Sound of Silence” and finally “Something Inside So Strong,” which was the set song for all six choirs. Whilst everyone was entertained by a group of young people called “Close Harmony,” the judges deliberated and then told us what they thought of the performances, before the awards were announced. Powick won the Judges Cup, and Sing It Loud won the most outstanding choir award. Even though we didn’t win anything, it was a great experience and a fun day out.
Tetbury Community Choir In other news, two of the choir are taking part in a local event for BBC Music Day, on the 15th of June. Sixty local choirs will be represented at BBC Bristol, singing live on the radio between 4 and 5 pm, and then later in the evening, as part of the celebrations for BBC Points West’s 60th anniversary, they will be singing live on TV’s Points West between 6:30 and 7 pm. More about how we get on the next Tetbury Advertiser. Tetbury and District Footpath Group Despite some muchneeded rain, the Group has mostly had dry weather for the weekly walks. In the recent past the walks have varied between short (2 miles), reasonably flat walks to longer (5 – 6 miles) and quite hilly, so there is something for everyone. We are pleased to see visitors, who are asked to contact the leader of the walk, in advance of the day of the walk. All walks start from the free long-stay car park by the Goods Shed off Cirencester Road. We are a footpath group, so walks may be muddy and stiles may be encountered. Whilst all reasonable care will be taken, it is the responsibility of each individual walker to be able to complete the route and to look after their own safety. We look forward to seeing new people out walking with the Group.

Tetbury’s Unsung Hero - July & August Golden Hill
Dear Editor, I would like to nominate Mr Rodney Smith as this month’s Unsung Hero.
by Francis Spufford
A complex tale set in mid-1700 New York, when it was still a small provincial town. A stranger arrives with a promissory note for £1,000, but can he be trusted? What will he do with the money? Where do his allegiances lie?
Rodney is a stalwart of the Dolphins Committee and on most Sundays can be seen tidying up and litter picking around the skate board park, ensuring it is tidy. He clears bottles from the ditches, picks up the broken glass and even empties the dog poo bins – something which the town council contractors regularly seem to fail to do! As a working committee member of Tetbury Town Football club he also clears up and litter picks around the club facilities and keeps them looking smart. All this work is voluntary - off his own bat - to keep our memorial recreation ground clean. Without him “the Rec” would be a much less pleasant place. Ed: It’s high time Mr R. Smith was rewarded! If he is kind enough to contact me soon, I shall ensure he receives a voucher for a meal for two, generously provided by the Priory Inn. I’m reliably informed by Malcolm Philby that Colin Baber, Eagle Plant and Boxer
If there’s someone you know who repeatedly contributes selflessly to the community, then please do let me know; my details are on page three of the magazine.
Key Stage 3, 13+ and GCSE + c x Maths and Science Tutor m y = Relaxed and friendly tuition –
Richard Smith is aware that his arrival will interest the inhabitants of New York, once it is known that he has money. However, he keeps his intentions to himself, creating suspicion and bad feeling as he waits for his funds to clear. Despite attracting trouble, he does find friendship and even the possibility of love. The fledgling city is almost a character in itself, as Smith explores both the streets and the trade that the place relies on.
Power and Equipment have also been instrumental in keeping the facility tidy, so thanks to them too. Litter, bottles and cans, glass and dog fouling continue to plague the recreation ground – and dogs should be on leads in the area. Please do take note.

“A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.” James Dent A sweet and nectar-filled July now sings with summer life. The hedgerows are laced with heavily scented honeysuckle and billowy elderflower and countless butterflies waltz through rich fields in frenzied pairs.

As the seasonal treat of asparagus draws to a close in the kitchen, we welcome the arrival of succulent summer strawberries. More a fruit than a berry, what we know as the modern strawberry was first cultivated in France in the 1750’s from a cross between wild North American and South American varieties. Part of their appeal is the relatively brief outdoor growing season from June to early August. The ubiquitous Elsanta is the most common variety, mainly due to the supermarket and agri-businesses focussing on high yields and shipping qualities. This is not necessarily Elsanta’s fault, as commercial pressures favour easy handling over taste or juiciness.
strawberries from small-scale family growers who put quality before mass production, and who plump for lesserknown varieties with a better flavour. We have now re-introduced our strawberry, basil and Brinkworth Blue cheese pizza, which is an annual pleasure that has to be tried. As with any “glut”, this is the time to plan ahead for the long months when berries from within thirty miles are no longer available, so we are also making sauces and preserves for those inevitable cold months. Live music continues through July and August to a laid-back Sunday night atmosphere: In July, we welcome back Blind River Scare on the 2nd and on the 9th Shuwanfey, a Welsh indie-folk artist, a songwriter, and a reckless free-spirit plays for us. Soulful Lewis Clark is here again on the 16th and we are joined by The Funkinsteins on the 23rd. The familiar vocals and guitar playing of Steve Degutis rounds out July for us on the thirtieth. August sees Teri Bramah on the 6th, Chris Webb plays on the 13th, Leo James on the 20th and on the 27th August, we welcome Chester. There are more details on all the artists on our website. St Mary’s C of E VA Primary School The Summer Term is always a very busy one at St. Mary’s School… …and the children have been making the most of the fine weather, participating in a wide variety of sporting events over the term. We have had archery and mountain biking and ‘Quad Kidz,’ which combines running, throwing and jumping activities. We have had a cricket coach from Gloucestershire County Cricket working with the children every week and our amazing rounders team came first in the district rounders tournament. The older children have also participated in the area sports day - and some children have been lucky enough to go and experience watching county cricket matches. We have also continued to run or walk a mile every day around the school field. The children also thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Woolsack Races and spending time with Radzi from Blue Peter. What a great day that was! Our Year 4 children spent three days and two nights at The Wilderness Centre in Mitcheldean. The weather wasn’t brilliant, but their spirits weren’t dampened as they participated in orienteering, bush craft, archery, rock-climbing and tunnelling. The
Children enjoying Woolsack Day
children were fantastic - they encouraged each other and worked together really well. Here are some of their comments: ‘The activities and food have been great - It’s just been amazing!’ ‘It’s been the best three days of my life!’ ‘We’ve learnt so much about team work.’ Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 went to the beach at Weston Super mare for the day and had a fabulous time. They played on the beach, visited the Sea Aquarium and had an ice cream. Year 3 and 4 went on an informative walk around the local area as part of their geography learning, and Year 2 will be camping out on the field for
one night and participating in bush-craft activities at the end of term. Year 5 and 6 are currently rehearsing their end of term musical production of ‘YeeHa!’ and we are participating in the ‘Proms in the Park’ night with other local schools, toward the end of term. We have also had a ‘Healthy Eating Week,’ where children have been designing and making a wide variety of healthy snacks and drinks. I think all the teachers and teaching assistants will have earned their summer break when it comes. On behalf of all the staff and children at St. Mary’s CE VA Primary School we wish you a very happy summer! Mrs Jo Woolley, Headteacher

News from St Michael’s Church Well here I am, writing this on a warm and lovely summer day. We should appreciate each season for what it brings, and this summer, hopefully, will bring hot days, people enjoying picnics and children playing and enjoying what the nearby open spaces afford. I know that the hot weather has its effects on those in their later years, babies, small children and those of us in the middle too, though - so
stay safe, step into the shade if necessary, and do not forget the sun lotion! Many of you will know that our Parish Priest Fr Isidore Nnamdi Obi entered the Woolsack Races – and I’m pleased to tell you that Father completed the race in 1.23, raising £1,900 so far towards his favoured charity “Achieve Africa” of his homeland, Nigeria. It is not too late if you would like to support his achievement - the details of where to send your donation are below. We in the Parishes of St Michael’s Tetbury and St Peter’s Cirencester are very proud of him. As a Parish, we joined in the day by running a tombola stall – and thank you to all those who supported it. We raised £473.11, which will be donated to our Parish Refurbishment Fund, Longfield Hospice and Africa, as decided by our Social Committee. Social events in the future will be a Breakfast BBQ after our Sunday Mass in July, afternoon tea on a Sunday afternoon in August and our annual Michael Fest celebrations will start with a Musical evening with local choirs, music groups and the younger members of our Parish; Friday 29th September. Our celebration will close with a thanksgiving Mass followed by a “food bring” and a shared meal. I must mention all the heartbreak that has been suffered by those killed or injured in the events in Manchester and London including the tower block fire. Our hearts and prayers go out to all those who have been affected including those who lost
their homes. We must carry on as normal, no matter how scared or concerned we may be. Finally, we wish all those who are breaking up from nursery, school or university a happy summer and to all families going on holiday, enjoy yourselves and stay safe. At present The Dolphins Dramatic Society are resting, so there is not a lot to write about. However, as Anne Smith is directing our autumn production of Sleeping Beauty, which runs from the 23rd to the 25th of November, she is wide awake putting things into place so that rehearsals kick off promptly in September. To ensure that this happens, auditions for Sleeping Beauty will take place on Tuesday the 18th of July and on Tuesday the 1st of August at Christ Church, The Chipping, Tetbury, so if you would like to try for a part please arrive promptly at 7.30 pm on either or both of these dates.

News from Christ Church I used to run cross country races. The challenge of the race was always to pace yourself; if you set off too fast, in the last mile a stream of runners would go past you. If you set off too slowly, then there was too much catching up to do, toward the end. My life has seemed a bit like that ever since - dashing into some activity and then getting drained before coming to the end, or easing my way in slowly and finding time has run out. I need a pacemaker! Fortunately, there is one at hand.

Rev. Noel Sharp Minister of Christ Church Tetbury
Meanwhile, enjoy the summer; may the Lord be your pace setter too.
The Lord is my pace setter…I shall not rush. He makes me stop for quiet intervals. He provides me with images of stillness which restore my serenity. He leads me in the way of efficiency through calmness of mind and his guidance is peace. Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day, I will not fret, for his presence is here. … Truly harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruits of my hours, for I shall walk at the Pace of my Lord and dwell in his house for ever.

Sir William Romney’s School Sir William Romney’s School is getting a pipe organ! A chapel in the southwest of England is closing, and they have donated a 19th Century pipe organ to SWR. The organ has been dismantled over recent months and relocated, pipe by pipe, to the main school hall before being painstakingly rebuilt by Mr Dillon, our Head of Music. Once rebuilt, the organ will be used for assemblies, presentation and awards evenings and for public recitals and concerts. Mr Dillon, an organist himself, said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the school, and one that will enrich the education and experiences of both our staff and students. The instrument is one hundred and thirty-five years old, so this is an opportunity to acquire a piece of local history. It is a mammoth project that will take many months from start to finish, but I am certain it will be worth it in the end –
and I look forward to welcoming parents and the wider community to see the organ when it finally takes pride of place in the main hall. Watch this space!” To raise money for the rebuild we are offering a “Sponsor a Pipe” scheme. Please see www.swrmusic.wordpress.com for more details, or contact Mr Dillon via email
to p.dillon@swr.gloucs.sch.uk or by calling the school on 01666 502378.
Artwork on display in Tetbury Hospital In mid-May, four Year 10 students went to visit the mural they had created for Tetbury Hospital. It is currently on display in the Children’s Waiting Area. Staff at the hospital are thrilled with the mural and there have been many positive comments from visitors. Well done to Evie Garbett, Tegan O’Connor, Charlotte Rushton and Emily Saunders for helping to create the mural. Many thanks to parents and students, who have since September helped us raise over £3,500 for charity, including most recently almost £300 for Readathon and nearly £600 for Red Nose Day.
By the time you read this, our Year 11 students will have celebrated at their Prom and are probably now on holiday somewhere. We wish them well with the next stage of their learning. Many of our younger students will be experiencing their own travel adventures - at the end of June we have PGL activity trips to both The Ardeche and the Isle of Wight, a History trip to The Battlefields and a Year 7 trip to Normandy. During the first week of July Year 10 students will be on work experience whilst Years 7-9 will be taking part in activities ranging from bush craft and survival training, to creative writing with the addition of day trips to Swindon Town Football Club, West Midlands Safari Park and Weston super Mare. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Royal Mint. The tour lasted one and a half hours and, although there were no free samples, we were fascinated to watch thousands of coins being produced, in various stages throughout the factory. The staff work in twelve hour shifts
in a non-stop 24-hour operation. Our guide related many interesting facts and there was lots to see and learn in the exhibitions. There was a large cafe for refreshments before and after our tour. On the way home we visited Tredegar House, a National Trust property near Newport. At present, it’s undergoing a large refurbishment programme, but it has a

After our practice session at skittles, we played much better at the friendly match with Kemble and Ewen WI and had a very enjoyable evening and supper. In the County Plate competition, we will be playing Randwick WI in Nailsworth. The second round of the County Quiz is being held at Chedworth at the end of June. We hope our two teams will do well in the competition. Our May walk around Uley and Owlpen proved to be very popular and the weather was good, as was the lunch afterwards at the Prema Arts Centre in Uley. In June there will be a circular walk from Chavenage to Beverston, followed by a sharing picnic lunch on Chavenage Green. We have provided lots of cakes for the Three Counties Show in Malvern, as this year it is the turn of the Gloucester Federation of WI’s to do the catering there. Some of our members have volunteered to help at the Show.

After a very enjoyable practice session, we are all ready to enter the table flower arrangement competition at our group Meeting, being hosted by Kemble and Ewen WI. Our June speaker, Lorraine Stanton, gave a fascinating account of her life-changing move from the world of high finance in London to a small farm in Wiltshire, with her husband. As complete novices, the ups and downs of life on the land were very challenging, including the dreadful footand-mouth crisis, which happened soon after their move. There were many changes over the years, which we really enjoyed hearing about. In July, our speaker will be giving a talk entitled, ‘Laura Ashley: Her Part in My Downfall’. Visitors are always very welcome to come along to our meetings in the Memorial Hall in Avening, on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 pm.

Christian Aid During Christian Aid Week in May, an amazing £6,698.60p was raised. Early birds went to “Big Breakfasts,” whilst others had a relaxing lunch with neighbours and friends. Those in more of a rush took a soup lunch, and those with a garden to share opened it for others to enjoy. Three churches gave their Sunday collection, and fifty-two collectors took to the streets of Tetbury and the surrounding villages, to undertake a house-to-house collection. All this allowed us to once again send money to the poorest people in many parts of the world, of all faiths or none, helping the fight to overcome poverty. Thank you to all our helpers - and to those who gave so generously to make this possible. Thank you also to Perry Bishop Estate Agents, who took in all the bags of money and kept them safe until the contents could be counted. If there are any stray envelopes out there that were not collected, or if any one wishes to donate, it is never too late! Either send them to Christian Aid directly or just put them through my door at 10 The Green, Tetbury. Alison Hesketh, Christian Aid

People for You I am sure many of you have heard of People For You, the volunteer befriending service that supports older isolated people in the community by introducing them to a local volunteer who visits regularly.
Loneliness is sadly now generally recognised as being as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Its a sad reality that there are a growing number of people in the community who do not have regular companionship and every day spent alone becomes a day of endurance. Yet, regular companionship is basic to our human needs, we are starved emotionally without it. One of the reasons could be that we live in a very different world to that of even 20 years ago. Modern technology, however much it has a valued place in modern
society, is guilty of destroying the quality of human interaction – we need to see and talk to each other! So, if you think you might have the time and empathy to visit someone in your community – it only takes an hour a week – please do give me a call. And also if you think this service could be of interest to you, again please give me a call. Sue Black, People For You 07810 630167 Email: sue.peopleforyou@grcc.org.uk
Our service can go a long way in bridging the gap between isolation and inclusion. I am so proud of our volunteers, they go the extra mile to make sure the person they visit feels heard, listened to, acknowledged and their company enjoyed and appreciated. For someone who lives alone and who doesn’t enjoy regular companionship the volunteer regular visits can make a world of difference in raising self-esteem and increasing a belief in themselves as a valued member of the community. People For You is available in Tetbury and neighbouring villages.

Great music isn’t la-di-da 1320717
You don’t have to have a degree in music, a double-barrelled name, or a place in the country – all you need is a pair of ears to listen to some great music right on your doorstep. There’s one of the greatest clarinettists in the world playing a lyrical piece by Brahms; one of Britain’s leading tenors singing love songs; a group of old brass instrument players (the instruments not the players!) who will make St Marys’ church resound with Venetian music; and a small orchestra and choir performing uplifting church music. Tickets (from £10-£40) can be bought on line or from the Tetbury Information Centre; accompanied children (8-16) free. Visit our website for lots more information. Then just come and enjoy some beautiful music. 2
