Young by name Time to Reconsider! After a lifelong mission to find the perfect watch, I’ve found a surprising new solution. Over the years, I’ve owned many different kinds of timepiece. At an early age, I decided to be a nurse when I grew up, purely because I craved an upside-down watch, like the pretend one printed on my dressing-up nurse outfit. When I was about seven, my first real watch arrived as a Christmas present. This “Cinderella” Timex arrived wrapped round a china statuette of the Disney Princess, which made it seem very special. Well, Disney Princesses were a rarer commodity in those pre-Frozen days.
Spending Time My most extravagant-looking watch came much later, without the intervention of princesses. But it did look fit for one, at least until the gold rubbed off. Having bought my fake Rolex for a few dollars on a business trip to Hong Kong, I discovered on my return to work that my secretary had the same model, but hers was genuine. Back in my 20:20 vision days, I loved the daring simplicity of the Swatch, with its big, round, minimalist dial. But I wouldn’t wear one now, in case people mistook it for an aid for elderly eyes.
Running Time 1110609 Jo Gale:Layout 1
Then I went through a running phase, favouring sports watches that took nearly 19/5/09 22: as much energy to programme as my races did to run.

Next I went almost full circle, buying a Mickey Mouse watch on a trip to Disneyland. Its face showed a pleasingly retro Steamboat Willie style rodent rather than the brasher modern one, but the watch recently ran out of - er - steam. After that, I embraced the Fitbit. Better suited for my more sedentary lifestyle these days, it shamed me to get up from my desk every now and again. It made me disproportionately happy when I achieved 10,000 daily steps. But when the rubber strap has started to disintegrate, I cast it
aside, resorting to self-discipline rather than technology to mobilise myself. How quaint.
Olden Times Then recently I received a free sample of a steampunk fob watch from a company seeking a review. The attractive etched Victorian-style case requires both my hands to open it. As a result, I can’t look at the time without it being obvious, so I seldom do so in company, for fear of appearing rude. This fiddly mechanism means that even when I’m on my own I check the time less often than I would wearing a conventional watch. It takes too much time to check the time, so I don’t bother. And, do you know, that attitude’s been strangely liberating. Instead of feeling that I’m constantly racing against the clock, I focus on what I’m doing, and let each task take as long as it takes to do it well. With Throughthe-Looking-Glass logic, I’m making better use of the hours in the day and feel much more relaxed. So take that, Time’s Winged Chariot! You may still be at my back, but at least I’ve stopped looking in the rear-view mirror. Debbie Young www.authordebbieyoung.com

Dear Readers, Perspective – what a strange thing it can be. This is my last column for the Advertiser as Lion’s President and it really does seem to me that twelve months have flown past. And yet I’m reliably informed by my peers that it seems like years to them. Time to go! I’ve been very ably supported this year by my Lion pals and I owe them hearty thanks – as I do many many other people. Individuals as well as those from organisations, clubs and societies continue
to do good things everywhere in our area, all of whom have given me their time and their resources, for which I’m very grateful. The magazine has trundled along nicely while I’ve been distracted, because Lions David Ellison and Colin Poole give it their time and attention with great diligence - as does “Super Dave” Roberts. Always. And Wacky Races happened, due to the enthusiasm of the fantastic helpers, competitors and spectators alike which the rain couldn’t dampen. To top things off throughout “my” year, you the public have
Lion’s Den very generously given us thousands of pounds, which we’ve been able to pass on as wisely as we could. So well done to you. Happily, we’ve had the chance to channel your generosity to endow good causes everywhere, this past year. Personally, I’m particularly pleased that the Tetbury Relief in Need organisation have been recent benefactors. Their support of care facilities in Tetbury for the coming years will be vital. Well done to the committees working hard in the background to make these things happen, too. To all Lion Directors and in particular, thanks to Lions Steve Parr and Chris French for their Wacky work. Marvellous. Now! As I’m leaving my post I must extend my congratulations to Honorary Lion Councillor Stephen Hirst for being voted in as Mayor, again. The man seems to be inexhaustible. For the Tetbury Lions his opposite number and my able successor will be my friend Lion Alan Cross. I very much look forward to sitting quietly in Lion Meetings while Alan takes the reins to guide the club steadily onward, with his usual calm assurance.

But I haven’t gone yet and I’ve yet another proud boast to make before I do! The badging up of Gail and Ollie North, our most recent additions to the pride, took place last month. Since I’m mentoring Gail, I insisted they pop round to mine for a “lift the Lion mascot” visit and a quick lesson in how to sip alcohol in a genteel manner. I’m pleased to say they’re naturals at both, as the photo clearly shows, and I’m honoured to have been able to introduce them (and so many other new Lions of late) into our club. What else before I trudge off, dabbing at my eyes and sniffing, sadly? Oh yes! Wacky is over, but next comes Woolsack Day, the Queen’s Birthday Celebration, the Town Crier Competition, the Summer Show, the Music Festival, the Classic Car Show, the Dolphins “Jack and the Beanstalk” pantomime, and a further magazine or two to edit. Let’s get busy, shall we? Yours in Lionism, Richard Smith

Eating Out Of all local eateries, perhaps ‘The Trouble House’ has experienced more ups and downs than most in recent years. It once had a star chef (who, I believe, left to open The Chef’s Table, but correct me if I’m wrong) producing dishes like pigeon breast, or razor clam foam, but a slow decline saw less frequent opening, then a brief resurgence under new management, who eventually oversaw the slide into a protracted closure.
that: she has a burger addiction problem and hasn’t ‘owned’ it yet! Anyway, the fishcake was light and nicely herbed, with a wellbalanced ratio of fish to potato (we’ll have to take her word for that, since I wasn’t offered any, dammit) and the fresh, meaty burger was ‘carefully cooked’. The streaky bacon was quite strongly flavoured – almost overpowering, I’d say, but only ‘almost’ - I’ll never criticise a decent rasher. With good thickcut chips and well-dressed garnish, Flossy’s verdict: ‘very good value’. I chose baby monkfish tempura, salad and saffron aioli. The lovely tempura were cooked perfectly, though perhaps only two for £8.50 seemed a little stingy, even if monkfish is expensive (unless I’m being greedy?) The homemade aioli was delicious and needed finishing, even when everything else had gone!

However, the team who started up a couple of years ago have breathed new life into it, largely due to its ‘repositioning’, initially as a daytime café-style venue (which, I confess, I questioned at the time), but demand grew so quickly that they moved into three course lunches, and now also offer dinner on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday lunch. Its popularity has become such that, when we arrived for an unbooked midweek lunch at 1.00pm, we only just squeezed in. (Luckily, they’d forgotten us from before Christmas, when, over a tasty dinner, Flossy and I had one of those ‘Christmas and families’ conversations which possibly got a tiny bit more public than planned…)
To follow, calves liver, parsnip mash, green beans and bacon and shallot salsa sounded tempting, but since Bibury trout was the ‘fish of the day’ to accompany green vegetable risotto with salsa Verde, the choice was made for me - the trout nicely seared and the intensely-flavoured salsa complimenting fresh-tasting risotto. Being a fan of risotto cooked with a dash of vermouth and plenty of parmesan, it was a little under-seasoned for me, and maybe a tad drier than I would’ve liked, but it was light and refreshing - a perfect lunch for a warm day… And I haven’t even mentioned the luscious desserts and fantastic homemade cakes…

Food Bank in Tetbury Food Bank in Tetbury? Yes! Every Tuesday, 9.30 – 11am at St Mary’s Day Centre, St Mary’s Road. Is there a need for a Food Bank in Tetbury? Sadly, yes we believe there is. There have been 60 referrals to the Food Bank received in Cirencester for people living in Tetbury. A group of 14 trained, discreet but friendly volunteers on a rota run it – and clients are given vouchers which they can exchange for different size containers of pre-selected foods. Boxes contain a variety of items including basics such as milk, tea, cereal, sugar, tinned meat, tinned fish, baked beans, soup and pasta. A carton for a single person is valued at £27. Vouchers can be obtained from the Citizens Advice Bureau which operates from The Town Council Offices every Wednesday morning, the doctors surgery and other health care professionals, the schools and the churches. If in need go to one of these agencies. If that is not possible and you are in immediate need, just come along to the Food Bank. In a space of three months 3 vouchers can be issued but individual circumstances are always taken into consideration. The volunteers who run the Food Bank are very discreet and non- judgmental. The
fact that you have used the service is never discussed with others and your visit will not be noticed, other than that you have popped into the Day Centre along with many other different people who call there for a variety of reasons. You will always be offered a warm welcome and a cup of coffee or tea. The Food Bank, The Citizens Advice Bureau and Save ‘n’ Borrow are all new ventures in Tetbury. Please use them. If you don’t need to, spread the word to those with whom you come into contact, so that those who may need to use these services know of their existence.

The speaker fairly early in April was Leigh Woolford, a first time visitor to Tetbury. The first part of his talk covered his explorations of different print paper textures and different mount colours. He showed examples of how the appearance of images could be strongly affected by these choices. Although preferences are
dictated by personal opinions and likes/ dislikes, the comparisons were quite striking. He also covered his usage of plugins supplied by Topaz and NIK. The second part of his talk consisted of his showing of fifty or so prints, covering some of his favourite locations, one of which was Iceland. He was able to pronounce the names of Icelandic locations without any hesitation; no mean achievement. His enthusiasm for photography was evident and well demonstrated by his prints. These were accompanied by humorous anecdotes. He was not bad at accents either. The next week saw the judging of internal, annual competitions for Print of the year, Digital Image of the Year and, for digital images only, the set subject of ‘Patterns’. The judge on this occasion was Ralph Snook, the chairman of North West Bristol Camera Club. (www.rsnatureimages.co.uk) Ralph gave very well-considered opinions on all of the entries and was very complimentary about the imaginativeness of the entries. The following week was a talk given by Andrew Marker of Bristol Photographic Society. Andrew had originally been booked to come to Tetbury last November but his talk had to be rescheduled. The excellent prints he showed covered subjects such as Dungeness, Santorini, the Venice Carnival and interiors of churches and other buildings. The digital part of his presentation included images of
Tetbury Camera Club Yellowstone, set to music. Very evocative. More recently, the Club had a discussion evening which covered items on the agenda of the forthcoming agm, the thorny issue of replacing the current laptop which is now quite elderly in computer terms and the forthcoming exhibition. Most recently, the Club held its annual dinner at the Priory Inn, a meal enjoyed by all attenders. The Club Annual Exhibition will be held in the Market Hall on Woolsack Day. Please come along and see the prints produced by Club members. Free entry. Reproduced here is an image by Dave Jones which won an internal competition some weeks ago. If you wish to improve your photographic skills (or just enjoy looking at pictures) why not come along to a meeting? Please feel free to visit as a guest at some of our meetings and see what goes on, hopefully with a view to becoming a member. Tetbury Camera Club meets at 7.30 pm on Tuesday evenings at the Priory Inn, Tetbury. We are a very friendly group and anybody with an interest in photography will be very welcome to visit and get an idea of our activities and meet club members. Tetbury Nursery Playgroup The children are now enjoying the milder, drier weather and we are able to spend a lot more time outside; where most of our key learning activities will take place. Before the Easter holidays we held an Easter egg raffle which helped to raise money for our double glazing fund. We would like to thank the Lions Club for their kind donation of chocolate eggs and large cuddly bunny for our raffle. Coming up we are going to have a summer ladies evening shopping event as a follow on from our successful pre-Christmas shopping event. There will be lots of lovely stalls and we plan to have Pimms and a barbecue outside weather permitting. The date for this is the 10th of June, look out for fliers and posters for more information.
bear and now Burford bear. The pre-school children are now being encouraged to come into playgroup and sort out their personal possessions independently, in preparation for school. This term the children will have further opportunities to get know the teachers at St Mary’s, with visits to the school and visits from the teachers to the playgroup. In the crèche the children have helped to make a spring display and are now in the process of making a blossom tree to represent the one in our garden. Quite a few of the 2-year-old crèche children are staying for lunch and afternoon sessions, which they all appear to be enjoying. This enables them to get to know the bigger room ready for September. Our funding raising event for the playgroup run by Boxer of Tetbury; which was a Three Wheeler Challenge: John O Groats to Lands’ End in 48
Our toddler group has now re opened and is going to be held on Tuesday afternoons between 1.30 and 2.45. Laura will continue to run the group. Despite it having a slightly different look/routine it will still finish with one of Laura’s famous song/story times. We will be introducing the new golden rules set up in agreement with the Tetbury Toddler Alliance Group. So far the new look toddler group has been going really well. Please come along to find out more - there is no need to book. Karen Milhench
SUMMER SHOPPING NIGHT
This term we are looking at growth and change. We started the term with baby animals and planting plants, beans and cress seeds. We have also had some tadpoles from one of the grandparent’s pond and the children have been fascinated watching out for the tadpoles to change. At pre-school, the children are continuing with the letter basket and taking home Fluffy
hours, raised £1300 and still counting. The people taking part had an eventful journey and the weather was not particularly kind to them. Never the less everyone arrived back home safely having completed the challenge. The playgroup would like to thank the Perks family from Boxer Tetbury for giving up their time to raise money for the playgroups double glazing.
10TH JUNE 7 – 9PM - PIMMS TENT AND BBQ Lots of lovely stalls from chutney to glasswork to make-up, memory lockets, candles and many more... Please do come and support the playgroup and help us raise the money for our badly needed double glazing. 1070616

With a busy programme to get through at our last meeting… …we started the proceedings with a talk by Sue Black on a local organisation, People for You. Sue explained how this free service works. Volunteers are paired with people who live on their own and feel very isolated, bringing them much needed contact with the outside world. The resulting improvement in both the mind and body of the recipients made it a very worthwhile charity. We then had “Meet a Member” where two of our ladies gave a short talk. Shona Cole was our first member who gave a very entertaining view of her life as a naval officer’s wife, then Anne Glanville spoke about Charlotte’s Tandems, a charity set up to provide Tandem bicycles to lend to anyone with disabilities, she told us how it had started with a bike for her granddaughter and had grown to over one hundred tandems all over the country.

Our main item for the evening was for our members to cast their votes on two resolutions to be put forward at the Annual Meeting in June, “Avoid food waste, address food poverty” and “Appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia” after a thoughtful discussion, the votes were taken. We have been very busy this last month, running a successful cake stall at the Wacky Races, enjoying a wonderful day out to Windsor, and a most delectable dinner at the Close Hotel. Forthcoming events include lunch at the Trouble House, and a garden tour of Whatley Manor.

On Saturday April the 23rd the group travelled to the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham. This was a new venue for us - and despite problems on the M5, the journey took under two hours, driven smoothly as always by Colin. The theatre is situated very close to the Bull Ring where there was excellent shopping and restaurants to suit everyone’s taste.
Tetbury Theatre Group
The play we were to see was “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” - based on the novella by Truman Capote first published in 1958 and made famous by the film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, in 1961. The play owes more to the book - but it would have been helpful to have read or seen either, as it wasn’t easy to follow.
clever - but even that seemed rushed and intrusive towards the end of the play.
The story is of Holly Golightly, a country girl living in an apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and now a Cafe Society Girl with no job but a socialise life preoccupied with wealthy older men who take her out and give her expensive presents and money.
It was not one of the most memorable plays the Group have been to.
Holly was played by Pixie Lott a “pop star” in our production, and this was her first acting role. All of the cast worked very hard but it didn’t quite come off. The American accents and poor acoustics made it very difficult to hear what was being said which didn’t help. The staging, however, was
“Moon River,” the hit song from the film, was beautifully sung by Pixie Lott and from the applause it was much appreciated by the audience.
As many of you will know, our Treasurer Lin Tanswell was married on April 1st and is now Lin Ashby. We offer our Congratulations to Norman and Lin. Probus One A local success story… Another active month. Twelve members visited Renishaw’s headquarters at Wottonunder-Edge on the 31st of March, where they enjoyed a fascinating and highly technical presentation about the research and manufacturing capabilities of this world-renowned company. It specialises in high precision metrology and associated tooling for computerised machines.
talk. The founder and present chairman started the company after successfully designing a measuring probe to check a critical component within a Rolls Royce aero engine. Today Renishaw has 70 locations in 33 countries, 95% of their sales being outside the UK. We then toured the demonstration items displayed. It was quite obvious to retired engineers in our group that computeraided design and machines have made phenomenal strides over the past few years. We were in awe of the present younger designers and application specialists.
We were received at the new Innovation Centre, best described as a state of the art conference facility, product show room and demonstration area. A wide selection of products was displayed, primarily related to very high-tech engineering but also including high precision items for use in dentistry and medical fields including brain surgery.
We became armchair travellers to Jordan on the 7th of April. Brian Ashworth explained how biblical kingdoms had been combined and absorbed into successive empires, the Ottomans being the rulers in the early 20th Century. Britain and France partitioned the country after the First World War, establishing the Emirate of Transjordan as a British Protectorate. This became independent in 1946, when the ruling emir (of the Hashemite family) became king. The country was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 1948. British support continued, but our influence declined after the mid-1950s when the king dispensed with the services of British military staff such as John Begot Pasha of the Arab Legion and officers in the Jordanian Army.
Renishaw’s origins and its subsequent expansion into the world-wide markets enjoyed today were described in an initial

Christian minority. Almost landlocked by other nations, not always peacefully, with a single port on the Red Sea, many of the population such as the Bedouins are still nomadic with strong tribal loyalties. Only 10% of the harsh terrain is arable, the main natural resources being phosphate, oil and natural gas deposits. Irrigation and foreign investments are limited, and Jordan’s hospitality to refugees (including 2.5 million Syrians) is an increasing strain.

With the days getting longer and the sun shining, our children have been making the most of the summer sun during their playtimes and lunchtimes. These are important times of the school day when children develop skills such as taking turns, speaking politely to one another and sharing. During whole school sessions we’ve all talked about what the children would like
to do during these times and whether there were any changes they would like to make. The children had many wonderful and creative ideas about things they would like to see included in our delightful grounds and we have been busy developing some of these. We try to use our school field all the way through the year which gives our children more playing space. Since our whole school discussions with the children, they have decided that they would like to play a wider range of ball

games – so this is what we are doing - each day a different ball game is offered. Already we have seen that more children are being included in these. Another activity the children were keen to include was den building and we have collected large pieces of fabric which are being used creatively to build a huge array of dens all around the outside area. The fabric is also being used for dressing up and for dancing with, wafting behind the children as they move along. Outside drawing and painting are also very popular and we have a large box of stationery which is taken outside each day.

Since the introduction of ‘Reading Fivers’ here at Leighterton, the children are reading even more and many of them enjoy sitting down and reading, either with a friend, in small groups or by themselves. We have an outdoor space with low walls, created by the Cotswold Wardens, where they sit, although the dens are popular places for reading too. On some days we get big games out, such as chess, and groups of children challenge each other. Older children run clubs for the younger children too.

Our 2nd Tetbury Brownies had some wild and wonderful visitors from a reptile roadshow – all the girls showed great courage in handling spiders, snakes and other bugs. I did go and check that they hadn’t left any behind! They then turned their imaginations into making fruit and vegetable models and have also enjoyed a meal at Ciao. Tetbury Summer Show With around ten weeks remaining before the Show takes place, it is pleasing to report that just about all the necessary arrangements are in place. Schedules have been printed and will be available from Tetbury Hardware from 1st June and also from the same date on our web page www.tetburysummershow.co.uk These contain all the information you will need to submit items for the show including the date and where/how to submit the completed entry forms. The schedule also details that all cups awarded in 2015 must be returned by 1st July and there is a choice of three addresses to which these should be delivered. The ever popular parade through the town will once again be led by the stirring sounds of the City of Bristol Pipes and Drums commencing at 12.45 from Market Place, and will this year feature two Tetbury favourites. These are the land train, which we hope will deliver our newly elected Mayor Hirst to the event - and the return of the colourful roving entertainer, Professor Crump hopefully astride his giant yellow bicycle.
including the ever-popular Segways, not the easiest of things to manoeuvre but a skill that can soon be acquired, it would appear. For the younger children there will be the opportunity to drive electric gokarts and for the older ones there is the challenge of climbing Spider Mountain. Appearing at the show for the first time last year, Spider Mountain is a strengthsapping activity requiring a vertical climb of over 22 feet through seven elasticated spider’s webs and then a down a fantastic vertical-drop slide. Despite the challenge, this proved immensely popular and is back by demand. Also back, and hopefully a regular feature of the show, will be the Cotswold Pheasant and Poultry Clubs with an impressive
On the recreation ground there will be a range of activities for all age groups,
display of rare breeds and a wealth of hints and tips for anyone keeping, or wanting to keep, chickens. We are working on one more activity promoting a local club and if this proves possible, it will be a first for the show. More on this in the next update as the activity requires a site visit and has some health and safety issues that need to be addressed. Subject to the weather we are expecting a big crowd again this year and provided the ground is not sodden, we should be able to park cars on the recreation ground allowing a short level walk to all the attractions. Mark the date, Sunday 14th August from noon, and we look forward to seeing you all and admiring your floral, craft, baking and wine making skills in the marquee. Summer Show Committee

Tresham – special views We’ve been back to Tresham again in the last month for a smaller job. This was on a footpath from the village, which goes steeply down from the ridge to Ozleworth Bottom, heading for Newark Park. We installed steps and a wooden handrail on the steepest section. Tresham is on a ridge between two valleys, so enjoys special views in all directions. The photograph kindly provided in last month’s Advertiser is taken from the lane through the village, but looking south towards Kilcott, in the opposite direction to Ozleworth and Newark Park. However, it does show, in the foreground, the small field purchased by the Tresham Parish Council with the picnic bench to enjoy
the view. It also shows the Warden’s work to good advantage – we were right here a couple of years ago with brush cutters, clearing bramble and scrub from this field.
Brush cutting clearance In the last month we have used brush cutters, which are petrol driven and larger and more powerful than strimmers, to clear the scrub and open up the views at three locations. One was at Woodchester Park for the National Trust. A second was at the Primary school in Wotton-under-Edge, on the steep bank along the edge of their football field. Now that much of the bramble is cleared, the pupils will be able to resume using this as a nature area for outdoor lessons, to give them an appreciation of the countryside,
Cotswold Voluntary Wardens However, we have to return here to complete the job. Thirdly, we have been in the Tetbury are with brush cutters, bow-saws and loppers, clearing along the old railway track towards the Trouble House. Again, there is more to do here before it is in a suitable state. Also, we need to make a safe access across the road at Newnton Hill. However, the intention is for the Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust, by agreement with the landowner and the County Council, to have this open as a bridleway, cycleway and footpath later in the year. In the meantime, it remains private, with access prohibited.
Crystal Fountain At Crystal Fountain (Inchbrook) on the A46 near Nailsworth there was a mill on the site of the retirement development, and a second adjacent to the A46. These were fed from the stream from the lakes in Woodchester Park. The mill adjacent to the A46 is still a dwelling house. Our job was to re-fence the edge of the field by this mill and adjacent stream, thus moving the boundary between these two properties to allow some planting and screening, to enhance the beauty of this area.

Tetbury in Bloom Watching the garden grow Anne Wakely has been a part of Tetbury in Bloom for four years. She is one of the team, out most Tuesday and Thursday mornings, tending the many flowerbeds. She particularly enjoys the variety of flowers in the many London Road flowerbeds, because they are close to her home and on a main road, so she passes them on a regular basis and can check on what is growing and take pleasure in how they look. Who can blame her? She doesn’t have a favourite season. The flowerbeds look impressive all year round. From the snowdrops, crocuses, delightful miniature “tete-a-tete” daffodils and the violets under the beech hedge - which brighten even the dullest of spring days - to the brightly coloured tulips and the willow tree coming into leaf, followed by the brilliant pink and red geraniums, begonias and antirrhinums from now until September and finally chrysanthemums, fuchsias and penstemons flowering into the late autumn – there is always something to see.

SATURDAY 25TH JUNE 1.30pm to 6pm - Opposite Willis Bros (B4042)
This spring Anne particularly enjoyed seeing crocuses, cyclamen and daffodils under the tree at the entrance to Priory Way. All this would not be possible without the on-going sponsorship of Highgrove Enterprises, Tetbury Town Council and The Feoffees together with donations we have received this year from Artique, The George Veterinary Group and The Tetbury Tailor. Thank you to Anne and the entire team for maintaining all the flowerbeds. Liz Farnham, Tetbury in Bloom

History of Tetbury Society
Within Bisley he built a new vicarage and the Blue Coat School, in which he established education for all parish children. Some ancient features are incorporated in the church; old grave covers, stone carvings and the effigy of a Knight. A carved Norman font is a special treasure. In the graveyard is a 13th century ‘Poor Souls Light’ – a stone construction rather like the apex of a tower. Small engraved brass plaques on the top of low walls commemorate former villagers. On the lower side of the churchyard there is a lych gate.
There was bright sunshine when HOTS visited Bisley on the evening of the 5th of May… …and the church bells were ringing as we arrived. We were met in the All Saints Church by the Rev. Tom Merry who has retired, but who assists with the ministry in the five parishes that are now joined with Bisley. Bisley is an extremely ancient settlement and those five parishes almost mirror its original area. Part of Stroud was once within Bisley. Tom centred much of his talk on the Rev. Thomas Keble who was the vicar from 1827 until 1873 and the brother of John Keble, who famously spoke in Oxford in 1833 at the beginning of the ‘Oxford Movement’. He spoke at length about the appalling state that the Church of England had drifted into by the early 19th century and the urgent need for reform and reinvigoration. Thomas Keble put new life into the church by introducing various changes at Bisley such as holding services daily. He also collected funds to alleviate poverty in the parish. We were told about the extreme hardships after the
Wool Trade collapsed and the agricultural depression after the Napoleonic wars with local families given money to enable them to emigrate to Australia. – “Beggarly Bisley!” The ancient church building was almost derelict and a former vicar had cut through timbers that supported private galleries. The vicar decided to rebuild and his curate, Rev. W H Lowder, who was an amateur architect, undertook the work. The church has a double piscina and a sedilia which indicates High Church worship, and was consecrated in 1862. Keble also instituted building of churches in the adjoining parishes such as France Lynch and Bussage.
When we left the church we saw the Bear Inn which occupies the former court house. Nearby is the ‘Lock -Up’ which has two draughty cells. Then we walked down through the village admiring the old buildings as we went to see the famous ‘Bisley Wells’. These were rebuilt for Thomas Keble in 1863 by W. H. Lowder and the last well had been ‘dressed’ with flowers for Ascension Day. It is most interesting to draw the parallels between the Church in Bisley and St Saviour’s in Tetbury. They were built about the same time, with similar high church features and another Lowder brother involved. Next month we visit Dunkirk Mill, Nailsworth to meet Ian Mackintosh. Numbers must be restricted to thirty and there is a charge of £3 per head. Alan Twelvetree History of Tetbury Society

In any business one has to adapt to changing conditions to survive. In the last fifty years, lawyers have always lived under pressure – and in the last ten years, emails, Government Department slow-downs and new regulations have all added to the existing telephonic and financial pressures. You then have to contend with social change and changes in forms of address. Having myself attended a primary school where the Headmaster would flog you if you mentioned the words “toilet” or “pardon” instead of “lavatory” etcetera - when I was told by others to refer to a “marquis” as a “tent,” I opted for “wigwam.” Twenty years ago, I would get angry when
salesmen would ring up greeting me by my Christian name. I now contemplate how many of my friends of fifty years ago might get arrested for behaving in their usual way. I attended the police station with a client not long ago. They used to call the prisoner “Sir” but now seem incredibly matey, even when interviewing a hard-headed sex offender. Most of the problems I have encountered have related to misunderstandings of regular communication and failure to recognise the true nature of the signal being given – or perhaps of one party taking advantage without the other party noticing, before it is too late. Personally I am very happy now to be called by my Christian name - although I usually can sort out the salesmen, still, because they unfailingly ask me how I am, when no one else seems to be worried about my health.

Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun With sons ranging from 33 -40, I know I am on tricky ground addressing female professionals in the 25 – 30 range, and it can become particularly tense when discussing over the telephone the dying wishes of a patient/client. My instinct is to address the other party by their Christian name but the doctor on the other end will expect to be addressed as “Doctor” and without seeing the individual you have to show the correct amount of respect. I had two months out of the office due to an accident earlier this year, when some from my office colleagues wondered if I had “had enough.” My enforced time in hospital gave me the holiday I had been waiting for and when back I realised the many plusses of the job. Over the past few months I have had to visit the terminally ill and to endeavour to find solutions to family problems. If you can provide the answers then that is very satisfying. As a sole practitioner, one has a certain amount of freedom to assist parties in communicating their anxieties and can set one’s own rules. It is all very well having forms to create will instructions - but one will not fully understand the family dynamics without meeting the parties, or at least having a talk. Clients have goals - and if you are fortunate enough to assist them in reaching those goals, then it is well worth going on working, rather than retiring “fed up,” as a lot of my colleagues have done. Wacky Races Without doubt the fifth running of the Tetbury Lions Wacky Races soapbox derby was the best yet, despite the heavy rain shower in the afternoon. The support from the town was fantastic with a wide range of business sponsors providing banners on the course, raffle prizes and full page adverts in the programme, all boosting what has become a major fundraising event. The event attracted many newcomers all of whom commented on the success of the day and are looking forward to coming back next year, which may mean we have to again close entries early. It was also apparent that we had a significant increase in the number of spectators, which is great, but the downside was that we sold out of 500 programmes in just over two hours. Magnificent! Thankfully we had anticipated a big crowd and managed to secure parking on the recreation ground while the football club assisted by opening a facility at their Preston Park site. Racing lived up to all expectations, with thrills and spills galore, a few broken vehicles and one or two bones, largely the result of

failing to negotiate the challenging corner by the Royal Oak. Racing was also very intense with C12 driven by Steve Thomas, having won all four previous events, being beaten into second place by Accelaramus driven by Richard Burton going into the final race. But Steve pulled out a brilliant last race and won by one tenth of a second to retain his title. The Youth trophy was won by for the second successive year by James Norris driving Dukes of Hazzard One. The Wackiest team trophy was won by the Parry Clan, another team that has been with us since the beginning, this time with a wagon and horses combination and all sporting cowboy outfits.
a good number of keen and hardworking volunteers from Sir William Romney school who helped sell programmes and collect donations from several points. The Rotary Club of the South Cotswolds also provided essential manpower all day and the Lions hope to repay the favour by helping them with their very popular Badminton Horseless event taking place on Sunday 2nd October.
Wacky Races is now very much a town event with a number of organisations all helping to make the day run very smoothly. We had

Dolphins Dramatic Society
Peter O’Loughlin Ltd Painter, decorator and property maintenance services.
Although we are all ‘resting’ at present, work still has to be done in preparation for the autumn production. Now you may well be thinking ‘Oh no, they can’t be talking about November already!’ Well ‘Oh yes we are!’ Come September, time will whizz by, so a lot needs to be put in place over the summer months. The Dolphins have decided that the production this autumn is going to be traditional pantomime – Jack and The Beanstalk - and it will be directed by Alex Ball. Alex thinks it would be a good idea for prospective actors to get a feel for the play before auditioning and so has booked the bar area of the Dolphins Hall for the 7th of June from 8:15 pm to have a read-through of the script. This means those that are interested in a part can get to know what they would like to audition for.

If you are interested in being part of the readthrough and auditioning for a part, please do come and join us. The pantomime will run from Thursday the 24th of November to Saturday the 26th of November (including a matinee) and, as always, there will be a special night out to the show for the older people of Tetbury on Wednesday the 23rd of November organised by Tetbury Lions. We are the champions! Sport mania is just around the corner with the Rio Olympics, Euro 2016 football tournament and Wimbledon - and at Avening School we’re already going sports mad with two amazing sporting achievements over the past month. Our tag rugby team came a brilliant first place in a Cirencester school’s tournament. It was the children’s great teamwork which gave them the edge. And if that wasn’t enough to make the whole school burst with pride, our Avening tennis stars followed their success by winning first place a couple of weeks later in a tournament held at SWR! An amazing achievement for a small school and huge congratulations to our talented sport-stars!
Go team Avening!
For the first time, Avening School will be particpating in the annual Tetbury Woolsack races which take place at the end of May. A team of pupils from KS2 will take part in the event, flying the flag for our school. Watch this space to find out how they got on! Last term, the school ran a competition to create a design for a mosaic which would be permanently displayed at the main entrance to the school. We were inundated with fantastic entries and finally chose the winning design created by Year 6 pupil Olivia Ciezarek. She drew a large Owl with an open wing around a smaller owl, which we have teamed with the words uttered during our recent Ofsted visit by Gracy Maidment from Year 5 who said that we were a ‘small school with a big welcome’. The mosaic has now been made and is hanging proudly outside the school for all to see. Last month our Year 2 and Year 6 children worked incredibly hard during their SATS weeks. Our Year 6s took subordinating and relative clauses, prepositions and modal verbs, the subjunctive form, various tense types, adverbs and adjectives, semicolons and inverted commas, conjunctions and antonyms all in their stride! We are proud of the children’s perseverance and determination.
Avening Primary School part in activities such as archery, high rope climbing and buggy riding. Meanwhile, the rest of the school will be preparing for our annual musical soiree at the end of term and also school sports day. An actionpacked diary as usual! Our school fundraising group, FOAS, are hoping for sunshine on Saturday 18th June when they hold the first ever, much anticipated Avening Bear Hunt to raise funds for the school. Please come along for a fun day out - and delicious tea and cake in the school garden! For further information about our happy, busy place of learning, please see our school website www.avening.gloucs.sch.uk or contact our school office 01453 833191. Jane Ruston, Head Teacher

Avening WI We have enjoyed two walks recently. Although we were not able to visit the fritillary meadows at Cricklade in April as they were waterlogged, we took an alternative route entitled ‘Bulrushes to Bow Wow’! Starting at the Waterpark Information Centre eight members and three dogs set off in glorious sunshine along the canal path towards South Cerney. The bulrushes were by the old canal and also sculptured on an attractive canal bridge. Bow Wow is a lovely lane encountered later in the walk alongside the River Churn. We had a tasty lunch at the Gateway Centre café, sitting outside in the sunshine. Our second walk in early May started in our village, climbing up along West End and over the top towards Nailsworth. We did not have the sunshine but at least it did not rain! We had a good lunch at Tipput’s Inn on the A46 above Nailsworth before returning via a different route.
account of her life on the dairy farm near Gatcombe Park and the different products they make from their organic milk all of which is sold locally. Of course, the price of milk was discussed. This has been a great W.I. crusade to get a more realistic for dairy farmers, not easy against the might of the supermarkets. We also heard about all the bureaucratic red tape farmers have to endure these days. We enjoyed tasting the cheeses and were pleased to buy some to take home. Gwyneth read out a letter received from our friend Pat Chase with news of the Vine Project in South Africa. She came to our WI as a speaker a couple of years ago and we have been happy to support the project since then. She advises us what is needed and together with lots of other interested people, fills a container, which is sent in the autumn. Pat goes out the South Africa
We have had to order a larger coach for our visit to Dyffryn Gardens in June so we are hoping for good weather. Our skittles team is playing the next round of the County skittles competition at Haresfield against Newent Lakeside WI. We wish them luck! Our talk in June is entitled ‘Aromatherapy in the Home’ by Liz Allen. Shirley Hand

Our proficient cooks catered for a Christening in early May and we provided refreshments for the Avening village meeting. Our speaker at the meeting was Melissa Ravenhill from the Woefuldane Dairy. She brought along several of the cheeses she makes which we were able to sample at the end of her talk. She gave us an interesting
in January and February and supervises the distribution of the donated items. In her letter she said that it had been very hot whilst she was there with little or no water and very poor electricity supply. The region is totally corrupt with very little state support for desperate families. It is good to be directly involved in a Charity and get news first hand that our donations were needed and so gratefully received.

After exerting lots of energy, it was time to celebrate another successful season. Every player received a trophy in recognition of their contribution and commitment to Tetbury Town FC during the 2015/2016 season. The U13s were once again presented with the Wally Smith Cup and individual trophies were presented to commend those who demonstrated particular values during the season based around commitment, attitude, performance and respect. As always, these decisions are never made lightly! I would like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work to make the day such a success.

Tetbury Civic Society Long St – an unpleasant environment One of the prime roles of The Civic Society is to be a voice of the people on planning and civic matters. The Society is now extremely concerned about the present state and the future of Long Street.
Traffic There is too much! A recent Gloucestershire County Council Traffic Survey says there is a combined bi-directional flow of nearly 10,000 vehicles over a twelve-hour period on a weekday. Of these it’s calculated 20% comprises through traffic from London Road via Church Street to Bath Road. This traffic, directed by traffic signage, includes many heavy goods vehicles. The street also experiences much clogging-up by parking and unloading - and a high level of pollution. All this will worsen with the expected expansion of the local population. Tourists don`t like the environment, it’s not good for business and the road surface is poor. The many markings suggest that the street is “just made for traffic”.
Pedestrians and Residents Crossing opportunities are poor and made more hazardous by parked vehicles. Walking surfaces are cluttered up in places by `A`
boards - and the noise from cars and lorries is fairly continuous, especially between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. There is no greenery to relieve the monotony.
Historic Buildings These are a joy to see and visit, particularly by tourists braving the traffic, but many could be made more attractive by better maintenance. One of the Jewels in the Tetbury Crown is the Market Hall, rescued from its role as a traffic island a few years ago - but its present pedestrian arrangements are inappropriate and not at the correct height for a building of its purpose and distinction. Its immediate surrounding area also needs modification to enable greater public pedestrian use and to improve its setting.
To carry out improvements of this nature requires planning and, of course, financial backing from the Town Council, the Cotswold District Council and Gloucestershire County Council’s Highway Authority. Hopefully this will be planned and budgeted for over the next decade. The Civic Society hope that as many members of the public as possible, will find the time to give their views on both the Draft Neighbourhood Plan and the Atkins Report when these are put on public display this summer. Long Street sorely needs improvement. Roy Angell, Tetbury Civic Society
The Future Many towns, both large and small, have noticeably improved their historic area environment in varying ways over the last two decades. A recent report by wellknown consultants Atkins Ltd., was been commissioned for the Neighbourhood Plan. It sets out possible potential improvements to Long Street. This Report, along with the Draft Report for the plan will be available for all to see during the forthcoming public discussion and will include potential schemes for reconfiguration of the street layout, discouragement of through movement of traffic, and the treatment of that most important surface surrounding the Market House.

programme, they believe that their hard work will give them a chance to make their way in a free country.
Under this Unbroken Sky – by Shandi Mitchell Set in the 1930’s, this moving book describes the struggles that an immigrant family have to go through to try and make a new life for themselves on the vast Canadian prairies. Having escaped from the famines of the Stalinist collective
Having to show strength in both body and mind, Teodor and Maria try to raise a farm and five children with no help and with the added burden of trying to assist Teodor’s sister whose errant husband does little to support his own family. Unusually, the reader is given an insight into the thoughts of everyone involved, from the parents struggling to make ends meet, to their five-year old son who, whilst aware of the tensions between the adults, is more concerned in gaining advantage over his cousin. The book takes its time, developing the characters and explaining their motives slowly, at pace with the passing seasons. It is beautifully written, exploring the pain, pride, hopes and fears of the family so that we too feel the precarious balance that must be kept between success and failure. A sombre, thoughtful book which split the Bookworms – some feeling that the struggle was too much, whilst others drawn in and eager to discover whether the family would survive. Overall, recommended. Time to service your computer Servicing your PC or laptop as you would your car, can improve reliability and performance, whilst also preventing problems before you lose data or your hardware fails. If your computer is running slowly, unexpected pop-ups, freezing occasionally or if it takes for ever to start-up or shut down, it does not mean you have to go out and buy a new one. If you have never
had your computer serviced, you could notice a dramatic improvement in speed, last experienced when the hardware was new! I have listed some tasks that will help improve your computer’s health, but do get in touch to book it in for a thorough check. A typical computer is usually stuffed full of files you really don’t need. Removing these files should make your PC run faster. Uninstall any programs that you are not using, particularly cameras and printers that you no longer use and also run the Disk Clean-up utility.

It is most likely the security has been compromised and your searches are running through a third party, whose results you certainly cannot rely on. The biggest news of the month if you haven’t already heard is that the full report from the Care Quality Commission is out and it is all good! It was an anxious wait between the day of the inspection at the beginning of March and the release of the full report, but it was worth the wait. The inspectors spoke to three members of the PPG as well as several patients, so we are confident that they listened to the patients’ voice. Getting patient feedback is very important to us all and one that both the practice and the PPG takes seriously. Each time you visit the practice you can fill out the Friends and Family Test. The PPG has now added an extra question, and will be changing the question from time to time so please make sure you always fill one out every time you visit. The committee visited Longfield (formally Cotswold Care Hospice) at the end of April and had a very enjoyable afternoon learning more about the facilities there. Check out The Waiting Room Files or the PPG blog website to read about this and other blogposts.

Puddle Ducks Amazingly, this is our penultimate article for this year - how the weeks have flown by! We have been busy continuing our journey through Jolly Phonics and have explored the world of music for ‘m’ week when we made several different kinds of instruments and had lots of fun singing and dancing, we looked at ‘r’ for robots, using different shapes to build our own robots and the children came up with some brilliant ideas as to what all their different buttons might do! Dinosaurs came to Puddle Ducks in ‘D’ week when we made Plaster-of-Paris fossils and then used paintbrushes to ‘dig’ them out of sand just like real archaeologists! ‘G’ week has seen lots of gardening and planting. We have been talking about what our seeds and plants will need to grow and hopefully our garden will be a riot of colour soon. Now we just have to keep our fingers crossed for some sunshine…
when we walked to town to buy our bread in the afternoon. Amanda and the staff at Hobbs House were very friendly and patient and the bread was delicious! We have been sad to say goodbye to Cath this term. Cath has been part of the Puddle Ducks family for many years now, both as a parent and a colleague, and we will miss her but wish her well in her new position. However, every cloud has a silver lining and in this case it is that we now get to say “Hello and Welcome!” to Kirsten, who will be joining us twice a week until July.

“What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfilment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh beauty will ever fade.” Gertrude Jekyll
The month of June astronomically heralds the first days of summer, when the sun is at its most northern point in the sky. The Summer Solstice, which represents the longest day of the year, falls on Monday 20th when the sun will rise at 04.53am and set at 21.31pm - treating us to 16 hours 37 minutes and 50 seconds of daylight. This is 8 hours and 48 minutes longer than on the December Solstice! Our front of house and chefs regularly take tours to our family of suppliers to meet the people and understand better the high quality products we serve. WE ARE HIRING GREAT PEOPLE! Priory Inn Blog Our most recent visit was to Uley Brewery who have supplied our House Ale for over 10 years. Unlike many breweries who have adopted technology to perfect their brews, the Uley team stick to old-fashioned methods honed over centuries. This makes Uley Ale a truly authentic, hand-crafted product. They have the unique ability to tap into a Cotswold Spring that brings water underground through endless layers of limestone on its long journey from the Welsh hills. Many thanks to any Cotswold Life Food and Drink Award voters out there. Your votes have taken The Priory Inn to another final in the “Best Cotswold Menu” category and also Stargazy to “Newcomer of The Year”. Our excited team will be digging out the posh frocks and black ties and heading off to Cheltenham racecourse next month for the grand award ceremony. News from St Marys’ Church
Woolsack Day will have seen the Tower open once again and coffee served in the Church. If you would like to go up the Tower, see the bells and experience the view – but have missed the opportunity on Woolsack day, it will be open again on Sunday August 7th 2.00 – 4.00 pm.
During May our Rector Poppy has disappeared with her husband… …for a well-earned holiday in the United States. She has asked me to give you the recent news from St. Marys’. We have just completed the redecoration of the Chancel, which with the lights on, now looks splendid as a focal point as you come into the Church particularly seen through the new glass door. Gradually we hope to get more of the Church redecorated at times when it is not actively needed for weddings and other major events.
On this occasion cream teas will be served in the Church. From the top of the tower there are excellent views over the town, and in the distance you can see Long Newnton Church and Highgrove.
At this time of year it is lovely to welcome so many visitors to the Church. All nationalities come and we provide leaflets in many languages. Our small shop is well stocked and if you are looking for cards for special occasions, baptism, confirmation, bereavement, get well, weddings, look no further, the Church Shop has an excellent selection. Also on sale are souvenirs of the Cotswolds, Tetbury and the Church. Do call in. Our friendly stewards will be pleased to see you. Diana Challis, Churchwarden

Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust May is the month that heralds in spring with two Bank Holidays like bookends marking its beginning and its end. It comes in like a Lamb and goes out like a Lion - and if you were in Tetbury you’ll know the Lions were all around the town masterminding the epic and hugely popular Wacky Races that has the town overflowing with visitors and locals, last month. This year the Goods Shed was represented by David Walker in his engine “The Donkey” and Graham Cleaver in “Froggy 2.” Both drivers managed to get clear runs without accident
or injury and each with a best time only some 10 seconds or so behind the record, so we felt proud of our intrepid heroes!

We held the regular boot sale and once again it was a well- attended and friendly local occasion that made about £200 for the shed. Fundraising remains a high priority as the project needs to make the extra money to cover the extra costs of fitting out a good kitchen and getting the fabulous but expensive raked seating. We have come up with a way of funding this by inviting our supporters to sponsor a seat. Each individual seat would cost £250 and this would include the dedicated nameplate of each sponsor on the back. It would certainly be a lovely gift to the Tetbury community that would be there for posterity. For the first time we put on our own market and ran a refreshment stall, which made a good profit of £725 for our trust funds. Sandra Ball our lady mayor cut the ribbon to mark the opening of our outside performance area that now stands fully restored and ready for use - and Nicola Clark and Heather Bristow gave us some songs to christen it. Stroud’s popular busker “Clover” made everyone happy with his keyboard music including his own compositions and all the traders were delighted with their custom, promising to come again. We’re pleased we had a go at running the market ourselves and that we’ll also have been doing the same again by the time you read this, for Woolsack Day.

Tetbury Sports Massage Sports, Remedial & Holistic Massage
Thanks to the support of Tetbury Town Council, local charity Citizens Advice Cotswold District is now providing advice from the Town Council offices on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 -12.00. The CAB provide free, confidential information and advice to resolve people’s problems. The most common enquires are about money, family, employment, housing or welfare benefit problems. Hannah from Tetbury told us ‘It was a wonderful relief to talk to someone who knew what to do. My debts were a cloud over my head adding to my existing depression issues and overall filling me with a sense of helplessness. But now, with Janet’s help, I have taken control of the problem, assessed it and am beginning to deal with it. There even looks like there might be a light at the end of a very long, gloomy tunnel. I cannot thank you enough.’ Chief Officer Sally Pickering said ‘Our advisers have the skills and knowledge to help people deal with a huge range of problems. We are delighted that we will be more able to help people get the advice they need locally.
Stiff & sore, neck, shoulder, back, knee pain? Have you injured yourself either through sport or everyday life? Is it putting you off sport/exercise or affecting your work? Eliminate aches & pains, increase your flexibility, improve your performance Sports massage can detect problems, prevent injuries occurring & speed recovery.
Golfers – muscle soreness can affect your golf swing. Improve and enjoy your golf more by looking after your body.
Everyone can be assured that the Citizens Advice service is free, confidential, independent and non- judgemental. We hope by having a service at the Tetbury Town Council office on Wednesday mornings more people will be able to use our service.’

So we work on with an increasing and varied range of music, and look forward to some informal performances over the summer. we submitted an application to a new Gareth Malone TV programme ‘Sing’, aimed at choirs such as ours. There was a huge level of interest in this by many mixed-ability choirs across the UK, so sadly we have not progressed to the second stage - but it was a really useful and instructive process and we have learned a lot about how TV companies work! To have even been considered was a great boost to our collective egos.

In April 2014, St. Mary’s Primary School started a two-year programme working with the charity “Achievement for All.” Achievement for All is a movement focused on educational change. Its aim is to improve outcomes for all children – building a world where the potential of every child is recognised and where every child is enabled to be the best they can be regardless of background, challenge or
need. I am delighted to say that thanks to the commitment of the teachers, teaching assistants and support staff who work in our school, we have been awarded the Achievement for All Quality Mark for our work in enabling every child at St. Mary’s to be the best they can be. On Wednesday 11th May, Sue Burrows from Achievement for All, came to St. Mary’s to present our award at a meeting for staff and we celebrated with a few cakes! As part of our commitment to improving outcomes for all pupils we have recently set up a ‘Nurture Room’ in our school with the
St Marys’ CE VA Primary School support of local groups and individuals. The space was previously known as ‘The Caravan’ and it was a rather tired room which was used for storing maths equipment. Thanks to many very generous donations from the good people of Tetbury we now have a bright, comfortable and safe space where children spend time with two trained staff who give the children who attend whatever support they need in order to succeed. There is a great emphasis on language development and communication and the relationship between the staff is always nurturing and supportive which provides a role model for the pupils. Children share snack times sitting around the table and take part in different activities with much opportunity for social learning, helping children to attend to the needs of others, with time to listen and be listened to. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause. SATS week is over for another year. We were immensely proud of our Year 2 and Year 6 pupils who approached the tests with such a positive attitude. Year 6 were treated to a homemade, nutritious ‘SATS breakfast’ each morning to give them a good start before they tackled those papers! Thank you to Mrs Lee, Mrs Weston and Mrs Rudge who fed the children each morning. Jo Woolley

The section marked A-D on the map, which is on a slope and can be very treacherous in wet weather, would be stopped up, and the old railway line marked A-B would be opened. Walkers could then use a link to reach point D so that they could complete the circular walk, number four in our printed series of ‘Country Walks around Tetbury’. If you agree with this proposal it would help the process if you could register
your consent with Gloucester County Council. Either write to Miss Karen Pearman, Highway Records, Asset Data, Gloucestershire County Council, County Hall, Gloucester, GL1 2TH or email karen. pearman@gloucestershire.gov.uk . You need to mark your representation “Section 116 of the Highways Act 1980 – Proposed Stopping-up of part of Public Footpath NLN/3 at Little Larkhill, Long Newnton”. We are working on opening up a bridle way as far as The Trouble House.
We have enjoyed some lovely walks at the start of our new walking season, around Tetbury and slightly further afield. Four of our members have also stayed in Sicily, thanks to the generous hospitality of one of our members who has a house there, to explore the area as a possible base for a walking holiday there.

Sir William Romney’s School Jon Bell has been appointed as the new headteacher of Sir William Romney’s School in Tetbury. Mr Bell, aged 41, was the deputy headteacher at Brimsham Green School in South Gloucestershire and now succeeds SWR’s current head Steven Mackay, who will take up the position of headteacher at Oldfield School in Bath in September.
Mrs Roz Goodwin, chair of SWR’s Governing Body, commented: “We are absolutely committed to providing the children at Sir William Romney’s School with the very best educational experience that we can deliver. “We have appointed a worthy successor, who will continue Steven Mackay’s great work and take us on the next phase of our journey towards even greater success in the coming years.”
measurements during a 35-day growing period and record these on a wall chart. “Pupils won’t know which seed packet contains which seeds until all results have been collected by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and analysed by professional biostatisticians,” says SWR’s teacher of horticulture James Courtice.
Gardening isn’t rocket science – or is it? Pupils at Sir William Romney’s School in Tetbury have planted Rocket seeds as part of an experiment with astronaut Tim Peake. SWR is taking part in a nationwide research project to see how gravity affects the seeds, and to encourage children to get more involved in science. In September last year, 2kg’s of Rocket seeds were flown to the International Space Station on Soyuz 44S, where they spent several months in microgravity, before returning to Earth last month.
Married, with two young sons, Mr Bell started his career in the West Midlands, teaching History at schools in Solihull before moving to Yate in 2011 to take up the position of deputy headteacher at Brimsham Green School. He is passionate about teaching and learning that inspires students to maximise their full potential and his particular interest lies in developing positive attitudes to learning to maximise students’ achievement.
Using a booklet containing scientific experiment guidelines, SWR horticultural students will grow 100 seeds that have spent six months on board the Space Station with British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake - and 100 seeds that have remained on Earth. They will take a number of specific
“I am delighted to be joining Sir William Romney’s School. Following a recent good OFSTED report, and impressive GCSE results, I look forward to leading the academy to further academic and extra-curricular successes alongside our committed staff, students, parents and the local community,” he said. Mr Bell will be working extremely closely with Mr Mackay, staff and students throughout the summer months to ensure a smooth transition before he takes up his post in September.
