Life Lessons Learned From School
Never Give More Than One Excuse
Debbie Young www.authordebbieyoung.com
As my daughter knuckles down to revision on the home straight of her GCSEs, I can’t help wondering which of the many facts and concepts she’s memorising will be of greatest value to her in later life. When I ran an informal survey some years ago, asking the alumni of Westonbirt School the most useful thing they’d learned at school, my favourite answer was “Not to sign anything I hadn’t read – and at my prep school, how to steam open an envelope.” While I can’t promise to better those examples, here are the most lasting lessons from my own schooldays:
I can’t remember which two excuses I gave to Mr Crane, the school’s pantomime director, when I wanted to bunk off an after-school rehearsal, but neither of them was genuine. (The real reason was that I wanted to get to the local bookshop before it closed.) Whatever they were, he saw straight through them, kindly letting me off the hook with the advice that, for future reference, giving more than one excuse is unconvincing. I never missed another rehearsal. He was a wise man.
How to Write a Three-Point Essay Our English teacher, Mr Campbell, spent many lessons hammering home this simple but clear strategy for essay-writing. First, pick three points on your chosen topic, outline each one in a separate paragraph. Top and tail the trio with an interesting introduction and conclusion, and you’re done. Why three? Perhaps because it’s the magic number in rhetoric, or because of the limited staying power of a class of fourteen-year-olds – or because that’s all he could face marking. I must have written
Do you see what I did there?

The Masses Are Asses This blunt statement was frequently shared by Mr Judis, our A-Level history teacher, when trying to explain to a classful of teenage idealists why so many bad decisions had been made in the name of democracy. The topics of our study were the causes and effects of the First and Second World War, 20th century East-West relations, and the fall of Colonialism, but as I listen to 21st century news stories, his words frequently echo in my head. So if, Desert Island Discs style, I had to pick just one of these school-life lessons as the most important, which would it be?

On behalf of Tetbury Lions, we would like to pass on our condolences to Mayor Sandra Ball on the unexpected loss of her husband Brian, who passed away recently. He was one of life’s true gentlemen and will be sorely missed.
Lion’s Den Lions have purchased a Memorial Seat, celebrating the anniversary of the Great War. With fantastic support from GLC Williams, and with the agreement of the Feoffees, our members recently completed the installation of the seat at the Millennium Green. It’s a fitting memorial and a great addition to the Green – many thanks to all our Lions for their efforts to get the installation completed. They enjoyed the bacon butties while they worked – and also enjoyed a pause to be captured in a photograph by local resident Mr Peter Atkinson. After a long wait we’ve finally received our “Message in a Bottle” tubs and have passed them to local organisations for distribution around the area. More about this incentive in the “Tetbury Cares” article at the back of the magazine.
February has flown by, and the Lions have been busy with lots of follow-up items in support of the various pledges we’ve made to many organisations. At the end of January, we had the pleasure of handing over £5,000 to Longfields, our Charity of this year, at the Priory. The event was attended by Longfields’ CEO Ali Russell, Jan Ryder, their Community and Events Manager, other Longfields’ staff members and eighteen of our Lions; it proved to be an enjoyable evening. Ali Russell outlined the current plans for Longfields, including how the contribution

we handed over on your behalf would be used, how challenging the next years will be for them as government funding cuts continue, and how local organisations are crucial in providing them with fantastic support. It was a very uplifting evening and we hope to be able to make an additional contribution later this year. We’ve also recently presented a cheque in support of the Addison’s Society to Shaun Scotford, who has undertaken a sky dive over Salisbury. Well done! He’s a very brave and inspiring individual, who also enjoys fantastic support from his family. As mentioned a few months ago, Tetbury
An annual payment of £13 buys you into the Lions 200 Club lottery. We use these subscriptions to help local causes - you get the chance to win a cash prize! Application forms can be obtained from Malcolm at Tetbury Hardware. Each quarter, the Tetbury Lions 200 Club makes a special prize payment of £100. This month’s £20 winners were: Martin Fryatt, Audrey Dunster, Neil Tunley and Lion President Bill Walsh! Many congratulations to them all from the 200 Club. Lion Gail North Ed: I happened to be the one invited to draw this month’s winning tickets - and I had my eyes firmly closed. Honest.

On the social front we recently enjoyed an Indian evening at the Bell in Avening, great food, good company and the normal laughing and joking that happens at these Lions events. Many thanks to the Bell for hosting us. Our next social outing will be our Treasure Hunt, to be held on the 7th of April. Our committee is working hard on arrangements for Wacky Races, which this year will be held on Monday the 6th of May. We are looking forward to staging the seventh year of this event and it continues to be hugely popular. This year should generate record times, since the road has recently been beautifully resurfaced by Gloucestershire Highways. At our March meeting Tetbury Lions will be considering how we can increase our visibility within the community, how we can continue to try to be relevant in a rapidly changing society, and how we can make ourselves attractive to new members. If you feel that you can contribute with ideas or initiatives, please feel free to come along at 8.00 pm on Wednesday the 6th of March to the Priory Inn. We’d love to hear from you. Yours in Lionism,

Computer Advice OK Google, who is Alexa? ou may well have heard about smart speakers such as Alexa from Amazon and Google Home, but are not sure if they are for you. Or maybe you are worried about security? If so, then please read on. The ‘smart’ home is certainly with us and need not cost an arm or a leg. A basic device can cost as little as £30. They work in a similar way to the voice assistant built into your smartphone, such as ‘Siri’ within Apple devices. Features include access to your calendar, email, contacts, music, games, news, timers, alarms and reminders, video and voice calling – and anyone with a disability may find them particularly useful, for turning devices and lighting on and off, for instance. Heating systems and video doorbells can also be incorporated. The list is almost endless. To use one of these devices you will obviously need a broadband connection that is at least three megabits if you also wish to stream music and radio. Ideally, you should have an unlimited data package, so that you do not incur additional data charges. If you are on a limited ‘legacy’ package, I would recommend negotiating a new deal anyway, which will probably reduce your monthly payment.
changed, in case you already have someone in your life called Alexa! No information or sound is acted upon or uploaded onto the internet until after the wake word is heard. By the way, the microphone can be disabled when required. Now, let’s look at security. The devices themselves are pretty secure, but they can be compromised if the rest of your setup is flawed. Firstly, make sure your Wi-Fi is secure and ideally change the password and router admin password from the default. Also upgrade the firmware, if possible. Secondly, never use the same password twice - and ideally use a mix of letters and numbers, incorporating upper and lower case letters and punctuation if possible. You can turn off ‘online ordering’ very easily - or set a PIN to stop anyone ordering anything by accident! Also, you may use additional authentication when a new device or service is added to your
account, via a simple text to your phone. Easily set up, this makes your account much more secure. Personally, I find these devices incredibly useful. For appointments and reminders during the day, playing radio stations and music from around the world, showing my photos, controlling the TV, turning lights on and off and even for changing the colour and white balance to suit - what’s not to like? Anyway, if you are interested in these devices, or need help with decision-making or set up, do get in touch. Or, if you have any other queries affecting your computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone I am happy to help. Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun Health welfare and other traps for the unwary. While we await, with trepidation, the government’s probable ratification of the increase in probate court fees irrespective of any inheritance tax (e.g. for estates over £300,000 - £750 and £500,000 - £2,500 etc.,) there has been a remarkable amount of activity in the courts relating to the lasting powers of attorney which enable those appointed to make decisions on behalf of others - usually elderly people enjoying their twilight years in sheltered accommodation.
Recently a local authority prevented a devoted husband of 83 from having unsupervised contact with his wife of 58 years ‘because of his views on euthanasia,’ – even though there was no suggestion that he would do any harm to his wife, whom he would visit twice a day.
The good news is that there is a refund scheme for excess fees paid on registration of LPA’S between the 1st of April 2013 and the 31st of March 2017, when they were reduced to £82. Executors can apply, too. The Competition and Markets Authority recently conducted a survey into homes for the elderly to see if people were treated fairly - and concluded they were not. The result is that you need to watch the care home contracts, because some terms quoted may be void and unfair. Less than 28 days’ notice of any change of terms is likely to be unfair, as are hidden terms. Care home contracts are heavily regulated - particularly on notice terms and absence. Guarantors are also protected in consumer law and should check the contract’s validity before submitting to its terms.
The husband had very limited status as he was not in possession of a Health and Welfare LPA, and so decisions were implemented by the local authority on what they considered to be a ‘best interest’ In many ways the Government’s plans to basis. (The social worker may soon reign increase the probate court fees could be supreme, if no Health and Welfare attorney a stupid idea, because they could lead to is made available to fight the cause.) The punters giving away their assets to the next court decided that the restrictions imposed generation to avoid inheritance tax. by the local authority were neither 1130509 Springfields1:Layout 1 22/4/09 22:12 Page 1 “justifiable, proportionate nor necessary.” Michael Hodge, Lansdowne Legal

I was advised that when lasting powers of attorney were brought in, during October 2007, that they were planning for about 5,000 registrations per year. In the year 2017/18 there were 759,976 registered. This has led to heavy pressure on the courts, which during the last few years have been hideously understaffed and less capable of understanding what needs to be done. Historically, I have advised clients to concentrate on the power to deal with finances - but there have been disturbing cases that have indicated that this will not be enough, in certain situations.
The basic premise is that a Property and Affairs attorney does not have the capacity to make a decision as to residency - and if the donor or patient lacks the capacity to manage their property and affairs, then they lack capacity to decide where to live.

Here’s a little something to ponder: Do the best photographers ‘take’ a picture or ‘make’ a picture?
Tetbury Camera Club
Sometimes a stunning shot requires undeniable creative vision and hours of patience before the light is perfect and the sun is in just the right position to complete a composition as visualised. On other occasions there is no time to dwell on being creative. What’s needed is a sharp eye and instant reflexes to record a memorable shot. We recently had a photographer called Aleks Gjika visit Tetbury Camera Club, to judge the entries submitted for our first competition of the year. Aleks has recently published a book of pictures on The Cotswolds, and if you look at his web site you will see a variety of shots he has taken which could definitely be described as ‘pictures he has made.’ Without his input, they would have looked entirely different. He has the talent to see things in a very individual way, and the expertise to translate that vision into something distinctive.

It was a picture taken by our member David Jones -- which illustrates this column -that stimulated the thought and the focus of this month’s article. While most club members spent last year’s holidays close to home, David set out to visit Australia. His tour included a visit to Uluru, which for most of us is probably best known as ‘Ayres Rock.’ Most pictures of this landmark are taken from several miles away, because it is so large that being a long way from it is the only way to capture a shot that shows what it looks like. And getting there isn’t easy. The nearest township is Alice Springs, which is 250 miles away – and it is also an area where it is normally hot and rarely rains. Being a keen walker as well as photographer, David decided he’d make the most of his visit and get ‘up close and personal’ with one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks, by walking around the 10-kilometre trail at its base. On the day of his visit David didn’t set out to capture this shot, which shows a waterfall created by a rainstorm which broke as he arrived there. Not the ideal welcome for most people wanting to take photographs, but if you are going to ‘make,’ not just ‘take’ pictures, every cloud has a silver lining! David’s shot shows that even when the odds are against you, there is always a picture there, if you have the inclination to find it. His is a picture that was there to be taken, but also one that he made, by looking at Uluru in his own individual way. Tetbury Camera Club meets at The Priory Inn each Tuesday at 7.30 pm. We are always ready to welcome new members, so if you are interested in photography and would like to see more - or you would like to further develop your own skills, do come along. Tetbury Art Society With arrangements made, the accounts balanced by our Treasurer Hazel Cudmore, and the weather not presenting problems, we were able to hold our AGM on the evening of Wednesday the 13th of February. We had enough members present for a quorum and managed to complete the formalities in thirty-five minutes. This then left members free to renew their membership, enjoy the buffet set by Doreen Pierce and her husband Derrick and Carol Barnes, to avail themselves of a drink served by Barry Barnes, to buy their raffle tickets - and to settle down at their tables to tackle the quiz set by Doreen Pierce and Sue Russell. It was a very pleasant evening. The programme for 2019 was prepared by Lesley Kenny and will start on Wednesday the 6th of March at 7.30 pm in St. Michael’s Hall, Tetbury, when local artist Brian Smith will give a demonstration in watercolour. His subject will be ‘A Busy Atmospheric Street Scene.’
In April we will be hearing from Elisabeth Hancock, well known in this area, about ‘The Art of Framing.’ Over the course of 2019 we have eight monthly meetings scheduled, comprised of six demonstrations in a
variety of mediums, a discussion with Stewart Geddes PRWA on abstract art, and a Christmas Social. We also plan to hold exhibitions in May and August and a sale in October. These three events will all be held in Tetbury’s iconic Market Hall. If the British weather cooperates, we will be sketching and painting outdoors on Monday afternoons in July and August. On top of this, we usually manage a summer social and a coach trip, so you can see that we have quite a busy year ahead of us! More information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or you can phone me on 01666 502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666 503926. We meet on the first Wednesday of most months in St Michael’s Hall, Silver Street, Tetbury at 7.30 pm, and you will find that we are a friendly group, welcoming those interested in art whatever level they may have reached.

and food, catching up with old friends and taking the opportunity to make some new ones. These events bring smaller groups together, offering a chance to meet up and providing fellowship and support. Similar nights are already being planned for later in the year, and we thank Ali for putting together such enjoyable suppers and lunches. The Food Group are also putting together some adventures, with a trip to a local Vineyard planned for the coming months.
The long dark winter evenings did not deter our ladies, who turned out in force for the Supper Club at The Close Hotel. Over thirty of our members came along to an evening of fun
The Craft Groups have also been busy over the last few months, knitting some hats for the baby unit in Cheltenham, which Pam has delivered to the hospital. These donations are always most welcome and provide a satisfying outlet for the groups talents. We received an appreciative letter from the Cobalt Unit in Cheltenham for our cheque donation to them late last year the institute is always happy to support this very worthwhile cause, which has provided great care and support to many of our ladies. Steve Baker joined us at The Goods Shed for our monthly meeting. Steve works as Manager of Tesco in Tetbury and was joined by Sarah, who heads up their

local HR department. They gave a very informative talk on the inner workings of our local branch, answering many probing questions, on topics which ranged from ‘Brexit planning’ to ‘plastic bags.’ He very proudly told us of the near-zero rate of consumable wastage in the store, with ‘near-to-date’ food being donated to local charities or given free to staff. His talk was very well received by the ladies.

Our coffee mornings continue next month, with coffee at The Snooty Fox on Monday March the 25th from 10.30 am onward. This is a wonderful way to come and meet up, over a casual cup of coffee. The venue lends itself to informal conversation and is perfect for those who would like to get to know more about our Institute. We are all from Tetbury and the surrounding villages - and always happy to welcome new members. Our Institute celebrates its 50th year in Tetbury this year, with lots of celebrations planned; a Gala dinner later in the summer, a very special speaker for our Group meeting in June and we kick off celebrations with a very special ‘Champagne Afternoon Tea’ next month. More of that to come! Meanwhile, our next meeting will be at The Goods Shed on Monday the 11th of March at 7.30 pm, where we will hear from Helen Price about ‘Life on the Inside.’ We’d love to see you there… 0860418

St Mary’s Playgroup Love was in the air at Playgroup, as we geared up for our Valentine’s disco and enjoyed preparing loving messages, cards and thoughts for all those that we love most. We really enjoyed our family disco, where all the families from the town and surrounding districts were invited to join us for food, music, games and prizes. We can’t thank Tetbury United Service Club enough for their continued support in hosting the event again this year – we always have such a great time and there were many tired little feet by the end of the evening! A big thank you to our parents in helping to ‘bring a plate’ to feed all the hungry tummies - and to everyone for coming along to show your on-going support at this and at our events too. With a new start to 2019 and after attending an inspirational ‘Excellence in Early Years’ conference in January, we have been looking at new ways to grow and develop our practice and have been reviewing what we do with the support of our parents through a recent questionnaire. We are really excited to see how this will change
what we do and have already started to see lots of great open-ended activities, where children can pretend an item, like a box, is whatever they want it to be. With the support of Tetbury Town Council, we have now begun to develop our Forest School site at Ilsom House Residential Home, with new resources and equipment. We’ve already sent one member of staff on

her Forest School Leader training course, with another two to follow, in the Summer. We have many exciting plans afoot, so keep your eyes open for more information as we have it. And while we are on the subject of working with the team at Ilsom House, we must thank their Management and Staff for being so kind and caring toward us, particularly during the very bitter weeks in January! We were able venture in, out of the cold, to warm up with a hot drink and have stories and songs with the residents. This partnership continues to grow and is of great benefit to the children and residents alike, as relationships blossom between the young and old. Our ‘Seedlings’ baby-and-toddler group continues to run on a Monday morning from 9.00 until 11.00 am, with plenty of fun and exciting activities for your little one to enjoy. Thanks to your ongoing support we have been able to purchase some lovely wooden toys, a new mat and rug for our babies and some beautiful sensory toys for all the children to explore - so please pop in for a cup of tea and a chat with the other families. News from St Marys’ Church
Tetbury Woolsack Races 2019 Monday 27th May Bank Holiday
Are you giving something up for Lent? This year, I think I will. This isn’t about denying myself the pleasures of life for the sake of it, (I don’t think God wants us to be miserable,) but we do use things to ‘prop ourselves up,’ don’t we? Chocolate, alcohol, shopping… And sometimes it is good for the soul to let ourselves be aware of what’s going on inside us: the feelings and concerns we might otherwise try to avoid. Yes, it makes us feel vulnerable, but it also helps us to be honest about our needs, and to be more aware of the needs of others. This is all at the heart of the meaning of Lent. It begins on Ash Wednesday on the 6th of March, when we will be keeping the centuries-old tradition of inviting people to have their foreheads marked in ash with the Sign of the Cross. We do this as a sign that we are sorry for all we have done that hurts others and our relationship with God - and asking for forgiveness. This happens first in the afternoon at St Mary’s Primary School, in a lovely service with the children in Key Stage 2, and in the evening, everyone is invited to the Ash Wednesday service at St Marys’ Church at 7.00 pm. Then, on each Sunday, our services at 8.30 am and 10.00 am will mark the journey through Lent. We are also running home groups each week, with opportunities for reflection and discussion. Entitled ‘Seeking Shapes for Living,’ our focus this Lent is on the whole business of living well – with ourselves, with each other and with God. Over five weeks, the course will offer a fresh way of exploring what is traditionally called a ‘Rule of Life.’ A way of growth, transformation and flourishing, helping to hold us true to our beliefs, values and priorities. To find out about joining a home group, call our Parish Office on 01666 500 088. And do join us for the special Mothering Sunday Service at 10.00 am on Sunday the 31st of March. We will be celebrating our mums, and all those who ‘mother’ and care for us, throughout our lives. There is a Mothering Sunday session for children in the ‘Little Fishes’ Sunday School – and gifts to share with all. All our Lent activity is about preparing ourselves for the events leading up to Easter, and Easter Day itself: more about this in the next edition. With love and prayers, Poppy. The Feoffees and the Thirteen As many of you already know, we are responsible for not only The Market House, but also areas of Open Space within our town for the benefit of the residents - and the snow at the end of January made those spaces not only beautiful but allowed many of you to enjoy our largest area, Preston Park, with snowy walks and sledging. This year will be another busy year for us, and the largest project will be starting on the 15th of April, when, as I mentioned last month, we begin the repair and decoration of The Market House. This historic building is the centre piece of our town, and this essential maintenance will mean it can remain so for many years to come. I would ask you to all please bear with us during the five weeks of work this will take. I’m very pleased to confirm that during this work, 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, that there will be manually-operated traffic lights, in order to ensure that any inconvenience is kept to a minimum. As a group, we are also very lucky that ‘Thirteen’ member, Dr Tony Walsh, gives talks on the history of the Feoffees and I am pleased to confirm that he will be speaking
over the next couple of months, not only in Tetbury and the surrounding villages, but as far afield as Cirencester and Cheltenham. If you are a member of a group who would like Tony to visit, please let him know, either personally or via our website. Finally, I am pleased to confirm that the Feoffee have made the following grants: • Tetbury Hospital - funds to assist with the purchase of an Ophthalmology Microscope •
Wednesday and Friday Day Centre – a
grant to allow this invaluable service to continue to operate • Tetbury RFC Minis – grants towards tours for under 10’s, under 11’s and under 12’s You can find out much more about our grants, our history and the current work we do for the town, by visiting our website at www. thefeoffeesoftetbury.co.uk or by speaking to any member of the Feoffee or Thirteen. We would be pleased to hear from you. Lance Vick , Chairman

Tetbury Scout Group After working hard delivering the Christmas Post, the Scout Group had a welcome break for Christmas. Thank you so much to everybody who supported us! We raised a fantastic amount of money to support our Scouting activities across the year. The Beavers have had a busy start to the new year, tackling three different badges this term. For the Pet Care badge, they made bird feeders and visited the animals at Pets-at-Home, to learn how to care for them. They also shared their favourite books, decorated book-related cookies, and made bookmarks for their ‘Book Reader’ badge. The Beavers will now make the most of the dark nights, by completing the ‘Space’ badge - for which they will be looking at the stars and learning about the planets. Once again, the Police Museum will host one of our sections, and the Beavers are very excited to learn about the history of our police service.
Since Christmas, the Scouts have been working toward their ‘Global Issues Activity’ badge. They have also set themselves personal challenges to complete by Easter. Our last meeting in January saw the Scout Hut covered in newspaper, as the young people attempted to build a bridge out of newspaper and Sellotape. There were some ‘interesting’ constructions, some of which were better weight-bearers than others! In our last meeting, our Scout MasterChef’s cooked a healthy vegetable curry. It smelled delicious and didn’t taste too bad either!
evenings, so that we can enjoy some more outside adventures. It is fantastic to see all of our sections thriving, with so many young people enjoying Scouting. We have a waiting list for Beavers and both the Cub and Scout sections are growing strongly, so if you are interested please drop us a line to the email address below. Tom Glover, Group Scout Leader gsl@tetburyscoutgroup.org.uk
In the next month, the whole group will be joining together for the annual Scout ‘Jambowlree’ competition at Stroud Bowling Alley. All sections are also very much looking forward to the lighter
! ! ! The Cubs started this term learning all about knots, which saw them playing a rope relay game in Sixer groups. This really tested their knot-making and teamwork skills under time pressure, as they raced to pull their team across the hall in a superfast time on carpet tiles. A recent evening session ended with their favourite ropespinning game, where the leader stands in the middle and rotates a large rope in a circle and all the cubs attempt to jump over it, to stay in the game. Other exciting sessions saw them gaining their ‘DIY’ badge, as they learnt how to make their own wooden key holders which they glued, nailed and painted. Our thanks to Stroud B&Q and to Travis Perkins, who kindly donated all the materials.

One of our parishioners of many years passed away just before Christmas and her memorial service is today in Long Newton. We give thanks both for her life and for what she took part in, in the life of the parish in general. May Trish Dent rest in peace - and we send our prayers and condolences to all her family and friends. On Friday the 2nd of March we hosted World Day of Prayer, with members of the other Churches of Tetbury taking part, for which we thank them. This year, the order of service was prepared by the women of Slovenia under the heading “Come, Everything is Ready.” Since I’ve begun taking part in the Women’s Day of Prayer over the past ten years, I have learnt a lot about various countries.

St Mary’s Primary School We have been beating the winter blues with a lot of singing… …and a lot of active play at St. Mary’s Primary School. Some of our older children have spent months practising songs in preparation for a ‘Young Voices’ concert at Birmingham Arena, attended by thousands of other children from all over the region. The children and staff had an amazing day at the arena and parents and family went along to watch the evening performance. It was an event to remember, with the aim of inspiring a love of music and singing within our pupils.
And the singing didn’t end there! At the end of January, St. Marys’ Church and the school invited ‘I Sing Pop’ back to Tetbury, to put on a concert for parents in the church. ‘I Sing Pop’ are a Christian charity who bring together church, school and community in a musical event over one week. The children were taught lots of different pop songs, which they then performed to the parents in two concerts. We are very grateful to St. Marys’ Church for both hosting this event and helping us to fund it - and to the members of the parent body and the church who gave up their time to put up and take down the staging. It was a real community event and a lovely atmosphere. Despite the cold and wet weather, we have continued to encourage our children to play together outside, making maximum
use of our wonderful school grounds. Thanks to our hardworking PTfA, we now have some fabulous welly sheds, erected by a local company ‘All Out Play’ which will hold hundreds of pairs of wellies! This means that children can put on their boots whatever the weather and get out onto the school field where they climb, dig, invent, build, imagine and create. We have also installed a brand new running track and climbing and play equipment on the field, to encourage our pupils to get more active at playtime. This was funded through the Diocese and the Healthy Pupils Capital Fund. We are looking forward to getting out even more in the spring sunshine. If you pop in to school and it’s a bit quiet - we are probably all out on the field! Mrs Woolley, Headteacher

Tetbury Library “It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.” Paulo Coelho – The Alchemist We all have dreams. Some are big, some are small, but each has the potential to change our lives. Is your dream to start a new hobby? Or perhaps your dream is to learn new skills? Or even to meet new people? Whatever your dream is, perhaps we can help. We offer a range of clubs and groups in the library. Fortnightly, on Monday mornings, our Inspiring Writer’s group meet up – and on the second Tuesday of the month our ‘Yarn Bombers’ gather at 2.00 pm, to knit and crochet. On Wednesday mornings (during term time only,) the National Childbirth Trust ‘Bumps & Babes’ group meet at the library, between 10.30 and 12.00. On Wednesday afternoons, it’s time for our ‘Baby Bounce and Rhyme’ session. This is aimed at babies of up to 18 months of age (and their accompanying grown-ups!) On the first Wednesday of the month our Scrabble Club meets up at 1.30 pm. The Library Club meets on the last Friday of each month and is designed for anyone
who struggles to get to the library on their own. Free transport is provided, though booking is essential. The Chess club meets up at 4.00 pm every Friday, too. The ‘Crafters’ group meet up on the first Saturday of the month to make cards and our ‘Computer Buddy’ is free on Tuesday’s and Fridays. Booking is essential for this activities – and you’ll need to book too, to speak to our Family History expert, who can help you research your family tree. Starting at 10.30 am on the 16th of March,
we are offering a five-week Italian/English story time and craft session, aimed at 3- to 7-year-olds. Hopefully reading about some of our groups has inspired you to think about starting something new – and having a new dream to make life more interesting? If you would like more information, or to book any places, please call us on 01666 502258 – and good luck in your adventures, wherever they take you! Linda, Sophie and Liz, Tetbury Library

Avening Playgroup The art students were then asked to come up with designs for each theme. The designs were chosen and, after the boards had been carefully prepared, the students set to work transferring them onto the boards. The students worked hard on the murals both after school and during open evenings, to get them done. When they were finished, Mr Davies kindly delivered them to the playgroup, where one of the Dad’s volunteered to help put them up.
February was an exciting time for the children at Avening Playgroup. On the very first day of February we were all greeted with quite a bit of snow, much to the children’s delight. They painted lovely snowman and snowmen pictures. We all dressed up to go outside and built a snowman, complete with a face, arms and a hat. And on Thursday the 14th of February, we had a visit from the Art Teacher and ten
students from the art department at Sir William Romney’s School. The purpose of this visit was for the playgroup children to meet the students who’d designed and painted the three murals which now form a great display on the outside wall of the playgroup building. The whole process started last year, when Mr Davies kindly agreed to refurbish our very tiredlooking murals. At playgroup, we asked the children what they wanted to be painted onto the murals and they decided on the following three themes: ‘Nature,’‘Fairy Tales’ and ‘Superheroes.’
So, after all their hard work, we found it only fitting to invite the students to see their art on full display. The children enjoyed meeting the students and were especially keen to meet the student who had painted ‘Batman!’ They loved having their photos taken and gave the students a round of applause for all the hard work they’d put in. The committee, staff, children and families at Avening Playgroup would like to say a very big thank you to Mr Davies and the art students at SWR for giving up their time and doing such a wonderful job! For more information about Avening Playgroup, please contact us, during term times, on 01453 832695 or email aveningplaygroup@gmail.com . Angie Heslop, Early Years Manager, Avening Playgroup

COX & HALL LTD PLUMBING AND HEATING ENGINEERS
Good day fellow athletes!
Established 1956
Even though it is Spring, and a time when hearing leather strike willow is still several months away, there’s a lot of activity going on within the Tetbury Cricket Club now, so finding time to put some of this on paper has been difficult this month. If I’ve forgotten anything or anybody, I apologise in advance!

Since I last wrote, ‘Winter Nets’ have commenced at SWR Leisure Centre, both for our senior teams and for our U13 girls’ team. The seniors run from 7.00 to 8.00 pm, while the girls are in action between 6.00 and 7.00 pm, every Friday evening. If any Advertiser readers out there are interested in coming along, please feel free! The sessions cover all abilities and we’re a friendly bunch, so everyone is welcome. We’re also pleased to announce, following a couple of years of the position being vacant, that we’ve appointed Emma Monks as Vice President of the club. We’re thrilled to have Emma on board, and we know she shares our ambition of expanding our women’s cricket offering, so this should mean exciting times ahead for the ladies’ section of the club. I’ve a number of ‘Thank You’ messages which I don’t want to overlook – so thank you to Lance Vick and the Bowls Club for the donation of the watering equipment, to the England and Wales Cricket Board for the grant they’ve issued us in relation to their World Cup Club fund, to the Lord Taverners for the container of kit they’ve supplied for the girls team - and also to Tetbury Tesco for the money from the Blue Token collection. Running a sports club isn’t easy and can prove to be quite expensive, so thank you to all these groups for making life easier. As the club continues to grow, we’re also pleased to announce we’re currently looking at setting up an Over 40’s team and are in discussions with the Gloucestershire Cricket Board about this. If you’re ‘retired’ but think you can still stroll around a cricket field a few times a year, please do let me know, since given my own advancing years, this is something I am certainly keen to progress! That’s it from me this month, thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings. If any of the above interests you, or you’d like to get involved either on or off the pitch at the cricket club, drop us a note at tetburycricketclub@gmail.com PJ, Tetbury Cricket Club

Friends of Tetbury Community Transport We are bidding to secure a massive cash boost from the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ initiative. In 2015, Tesco teamed up with the charity ‘Groundwork’ (web site https:// www.groundwork.org.uk,) to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 (raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores,) awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region are shortlisted to receive a cash award - and as you’re probably already aware, shoppers are invited to vote for who they think should take away the top grant, using a blue plastic token. Friends of a Tetbury Community Transport is a charitable organisation, run entirely by volunteers. We provide transport for residents who would otherwise be unable to get out and about. We provide doorto-door minibus trips and a separate car service, to take people to hospital, doctors and dentists appointments etc., in return for a voluntary donation. Tesco’s ‘Bags of Help’ project has already delivered over £63 million to more than 20,000 projects across Britain. Alec Brown,
Head of Community at Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists, and we can’t wait to see these
come to life in hundreds of communities.” For more details about Friends of Tetbury Community Transport or for further details of services offered and volunteering opportunities, contact Roger Bellairs on 01666 500910 or email roger.pamela@ btinternet.com Roger Bellairs, Tetbury Community Transport

Saving money on your fuel bills! Local motorists and businesses continue to face high fuel prices at the petrol pumps, and for many, running a car remains one of the biggest items of expenditure each month. Shopping around for lower fuel prices is something many drivers now undertake. Stroud-based husband and wife team Caroline and Jim Clennell have recently launched a new business venture: “Miles
Better.” They specialise in vehicle engine upgrades which can help you save up to 15% on your fuel bills. The award-winning VIEZU Technology used by Miles Better has already been installed on over 24,000 vans for BT, and 400 for “Homeserve,” as well as many other smaller fleets. Reported savings amount to £4m a year. Private vehicle owners can achieve the same results, with the average diesel car travelling 90 miles further with every tank of fuel.

Tetbury in Bloom Despite the recent cold weather, we’ve still managed to get out twice nearly every week, both to tend the beds and to catch up on maintenance jobs - clearing leaves, tree debris, weeding and cutting back dead growth, ready for the appearance of the thousands of spring bulbs that we’ve planted over the years. Throughout the town, for at least nine months of the year, we’ve made it so there’s always something in flower to complement the colourful foliage shrubs that make up the framework of the displays. Starting in early February with the snowdrops, hellebores and cyclamen, they quickly give way to primroses and crocus. Then come the daffodils which are followed by tulips and alliums. During the summer months, long flowering perennials, bolstered by seasonal bedding take over and towards the end of the year, the late fuchsias and penstemons come into their own by flowering right through to the first frosts in November. Our sole aim has always been to make the town look as attractive as possible, whether we do it by way of flowers or more recently, Christmas lights. Although we
VERSATILITY
don’t compete any more, we still follow the philosophy of RHS Britain in Bloom which is to make the town look cared for and a place where people can be proud to live, work and visit. If you’d like to support us, we are still taking orders for hanging baskets which will arrive during the first week of June and delivered to your door by arrangement. This is one of our main fund raising initiatives, the profits from which allow us to continue making Tetbury one of the most attractive small towns in the region. Having read John

Christmas is a distant memory, but the ‘traditional’ weather certainly arrived didn’t it? In January the children began to learn about winter weather: its effect on the garden, animals that live in colder climates and what it’s like to explore snow. We did not allow the cold to restrict our outdoor play - it helped with self-care and organisational skills; lots of layers to put on independently and how to sort out matching wellingtons and gloves. Every evening we put out shallow trays of water to see what happened. In February we couldn’t find the trays of water under their layer of snow! Inside, we talked about the Chinese New Year. The children enjoyed all the craft opportunities it makes available - and glitter made a re-appearance! We had a ‘Chinese Interest’ tray to explore, and they
put together a colourful display. Then, during pre-school, they made a Dragon and danced to the beat of Laura’s new drum as part their PE session. Also at pre-school, the ‘letter basket’ has begun. Here, children bring in a different item each week, beginning with a different letter sound. Our take-home bears have started to go home with them too, and the children enjoy hearing about the tales of their visits to their friend’s homes. The children recently had a story read to them by Teresa Bell from St Mary’s school, all about a paperchain doll. During ‘Play and Stay’ Laura usually either offers a sensory or craft activity that parent and child can explore together. There’s a healthy snack provided, and the session finishes on a story or song. The group has become extremely popular, but due to the size of the room and safety concerns, we have to limit the families we can have attend. We have a first-come first-served basis for entry, but we do apologise to the families that we have to turn away.
Tetbury Nursery Group Indeed, both crèche and playgroup are getting very full, and we’d like to open additional spaces. To enable us to do this, we’re looking for more staff. Initially, we’re looking for ‘bank staff ’ to cover sicknesses, holidays etcetera, and we would prefer that candidates hold a minimum of a Level Two qualification, please. If anybody would like further information, please contact the playgroup using the details below. Finally, we’d like to say ‘Thanks!’ to Richard, Nora, John and Mary who run our Bingo evenings. All the proceeds go to playgroup and enable us to buy resources for the children. The Christmas Bingo alone raised nearly £300. If anyone would like to come along and try to win some lovely prizes, it is held fortnightly on a Thursday evening, with ‘Eyes Down!’ at 7.30 pm. This month’s events are on the 14th and the 28th of March. If you wish to contact us about any of our facilities you can do this by ringing 01666 504855 and asking for Karen or Linda - or you can reach us via email through tetburynurseryplaygroup@ eygloucestershire.co.uk Karen Milhench, Tetbury Nursery Playgroup

Tetbury Hospital This month I’m pleased to be able to introduce our updated Ophthalmology Service. We’ve heard that some patients haven’t been able to access Ophthalmology Services at Tetbury Hospital; we needed to put that right! For patients suffering problems with their eyes, which their Optician or GP feel needs a referral to a consultant, we now have even shorter wait times for an appointment. We’ve achieved this by
increasing our outpatient clinic availability throughout the week, and also increasing our theatre sessions. Our wait time for a first appointment is currently six weeks, and from first appointment to surgery a further two weeks – eight weeks from first appointment to surgery! And with virtually all cataract surgery performed in our Day Case unit, it’s not necessary for you to travel further for this procedure.
level of care, from initial consultation through to surgery and discharge. We’ve also “grown our own,” training two of our already very experienced healthcare assistants to become Ophthalmic Technicians. They now support our consultants during outpatient clinics.
Our service is a completely consultant-led process, which means you will always be seen by a consultant at your outpatient appointment, and it will always be a consultant who carries out your procedure. We have an experienced team of highly skilled Consultant Ophthalmologists, offering both NHS and private patient appointments. They deliver an outstanding

Tigger’s @ Tetbury We are very proud to have been announced ‘WINNERS’ at the National Nurseries Recognition Awards 2019, in the ‘Partnership with Parents’ category. We strive to work in partnership and harmony with all our families and carers and feel that we do so extremely well... and now we have the award that commends our dedicated staff team! We were up against 6 other finalist nurseries, representing the whole of the UK, so we are delighted to bring this award home. The team work so hard and are extremely dedicated in providing the best care and learning opportunities for each individual child. Communicating with parents via a ‘Parentzone’ app, immediately sends parents daily updates and pictures straight to their phones which can be reassuring, especially as some parents can feel that they are missing out on their child’s day, so now they too can feel a part of it! Well done #teamtiggers. On a more curious note, Tigger’s Nurseries are well on their journey to becoming an accredited ‘Curiosity Approach Setting’. We have been incorporating much more natural and open-ended resources into children’s play and exploration, including loose parts play and more opened ended resources into our daily experiences. Our vision is to help lay the foundations for a full, enriched and happy start to our children’s early education. We enthusiastically continue on our journey, providing children with long life skills in order to thrive throughout their young and adult lives, giving them a sense of belonging, whilst encouraging self-independence, confidence and the ability to spread kindness. As educators, we play a significant part in providing a magical learning environment where children can become inquisitive, deep thinking and engineers of the future. Incorporating curiosity, awe and wonder into our nursery life will help the children to become more adventurous, explore happiness and enjoyment within a nurturing environment.

Tetbury Town Football Club As the football season passes its half-way point, all three Tetbury sides are in and around mid-table and looking to mount a charge on the teams above them. The weather has played its part in recent weeks with all teams having fixtures cancelled, but as the snow and cold clears, a busy fixture calendar is ahead for all. The 1st XI have seen an unbeaten run stretch from November to February lift them from the bottom of the table, but there’s lots of hard work to be done in the remaining months. Our 2nd XI have had a mixed bag of results of late, but a fine performance against table-topping Kingsway, even though it resulted in a heart-breaking late defeat, has given Benj Spragg and his squad good momentum for the next group of games. The 3rd XI have also seen form ‘up and down,’ but have games in hand on teams above them. Rich ‘Tricky’ Horton has his
eye on a top-three-quarters finish, with a settled squad being key to any progress. All three sides have seen mixed fortunes in the respective cup competitions, with the reserves and 3rds bowing out early against tough opposition - whilst the first team enjoy a good run! Joel Skinner’s side are in the County Cup semi-final, where they

travel to ‘in-form’ Randwick with a place in the final up for grabs. The two sides have already met twice in the league this season, with both games finishing as a draw, so another tight game is on the cards! As a follow-up to the Christmas visit to Forest Green Rovers, the Youth team we were delighted to be asked to go back as ball boys, and to provide the guard of honour for the players at a recent home game. Coincidently, the game was against Mansfield Town FC, the same team against whom our previous visit was cut short due to the weather. The boys were able to get a real feel for the atmosphere and be ‘up close and personal,’ to see what is really involved in being a professional footballer. All the boys had a fantastic time again - and they even had the opportunity to learn some new words from the opposition supporters, which apparently aren’t yet in their Key Stage 2 or 3 curriculum.

Every year, to raise funds for the club, the younger age groups do a ‘Charity Fun Run,’ and this year is no different. It will be held at SWR School on the 6th of April, between 10.00 am and 12.00 pm and will present the kids with the challenge not just of running around the playing fields, but also of navigating their way over obstacles en route. Much fun will be had, and teas, coffees etc. will be available for anyone wanting to come along to see the kids in action. You are all very welcome! We always greet new players, committee members or fans with enthusiasm, so if you’d like to get involved in any way with Tetbury Town, please get in touch Nick Hall, TTYFC U10’s Coach

February was an ‘interesting’ month down at the Shed! We have been really pleased and encouraged to see how well attended and appreciated our Wednesday afternoon tea concerts are proving to be. Designed to raise funds towards the purchase of our Steinway B piano, they offer an opportunity for people to come along and enjoy some lovely music, perhaps with a cup of tea or coffee and maybe even some cake, from the Whistle Stop Café. To meet old friends too, as well as perhaps to make some new ones.

The other week, well-known and now ‘local’ pianist Clare Hammond was due to give a concert in the Shed. Unfortunately, the day before, she succumbed to flu - and despite her best efforts had to pull out. We thought at first that we were going to have to cancel the event, but the President of the Tetbury Music Festival and supporter of the Shed – Lady Smith – came to our rescue! She was able to reach Japanese piano virtuoso Maki Sekiya on our behalf, who agreed to come along at just 24-hours’ notice and with a mere couple of hours practise using our piano. Everyone who attended the replacement concert agreed it was a fantastic evening and we still have a performance by Clare Hammond to look forward to! We are most grateful to Maki and to Lady Smith for helping us avoid potential disappointment. March brings a variety of performers and performances to the Shed – including local performer and composer Jan Vriend together with a couple of colleagues Ralph van Raat and Ilonka Kolthof. Check out our advertisement alongside this piece, for more information on all that’s happening this month. We have a new Chair! I am very pleased to announce that Christine Berry has been elected by the Trustees to take over from Julia Hasler, who has stepped down after successfully steering the Trust through its first full year of operations at the Goods Shed. Christine is a retired teacher, and a Tetbury resident since 1980. She first threw herself into working for the success of the Goods Shed Arts Centre just before it opened in 2017 and has been a Trustee of TRLRT and Company Secretary for much of that time. She is also a member of the Events Committee, responsible for sourcing and booking the wide range of happenings and entertainment appearing at the Shed.

Christine has organised and trained over a hundred volunteers at the Shed, who staff our various events. She says she is delighted to be involved in such wonderful facility in Tetbury and will continue to do whatever she can to ensure events run smoothly. Her aim is to consolidate our success, helping us build our reputation as an outstanding Arts Centre. We are always looking for more volunteers, whether it is helping in the café or the bar, stewarding at exhibitions, managing our box office or front of house at events, projectionists for our cinema nights, sound and light technicians – the opportunities are varied and widespread. Probus Lew’s very comprehensive talk also included views of the city of Xi’an, with Chinese people performing tai-chi, gymnastic and ballet exercises. We returned to the Far East on the 17th of January, when Denis Cartwright took us along the River Kwai. This was the route of the notorious World War II railway, built between Malaya and Burma to support the Japanese forces in Burma - and perhaps also in India, later. Denis described Japan’s previous territorial ambitions and acquisitions, followed by its declaration of war against the United States and Britain in December 1941. Pearl Harbour and Singapore were bombed simultaneously, and Malaya invaded from Thailand. Singapore surrendered on the 15th of February 1942: some 130,000 people of different races became prisoners.
‘Bin Ma Yong’ is the Chinese name for the Qin Terracotta Army. Strains of Chinese music on the 3rd of January heralded Lew Lawton’s introduction to some Chinese language basics and a summary of the army’s history. Found in March 1974 by farmers digging a well, the first of three pits now contains 6,000 reassembled life-size clay figures. Enclosed by a roofed structure in 1979, they make an impressive sight, Lew said, dating back over 2,000 years to Qin Shi Huangdi.
had sought eternal life - unsuccessfully. He prepared for afterlife protection by placing this army 1.5 km to the east of the hill containing his tomb. Discovered up to five metres deep, together with clay horses and bronze chariots, the warriors were originally brightly painted, but the colours had dispelled on exposure to the atmosphere.
Lew showed how the soldiers, some armoured and others not, had been shaped in standard moulds with varying heights according to rank. All had different heads and faces but had been found smashed, their weapons looted, perhaps in subsequent raids. The new railway linked the existing Singapore-Bangkok and Burmese YeRangoon lines. Construction of the metregauge track started in June 1942, using forced labour supervised by two Japanese railway regiments. Eventually, 62,000 prisoners-of war and 279,000 civilians were involved, of whom 130,000 died as a result of the harsh conditions, brutal treatment, malnutrition and lack of medical care. With the help of well-prepared diagrams, Denis explained how the difficult jungle and rocky terrain had been tackled with only basic hand tools, in hot humid conditions and severe monsoon weather. Denis’s brother had been forced to work on the railway and had survived. A large steel bridge was built over the River Maiklung near its confluence with the River Kwai, not over the Kwai itself. The 285-mile railway was completed in October 1943: now only a section for tourist use remains. Denis’s thoroughly absorbing talk contained many enlightening facts and figures. Thirty members attended our AGM on the 7th of February. The existing officers and committee were re-elected, our financial arrangements reviewed, and many useful ideas exchanged. A buffet lunch at the Priory Inn followed. Theo Stening, Probus, Tetbury 01666 504243 All Aspects of Interior Exterior Painting

It’s hard to get a lather up in hard water and this can mean up to 50% more soaps, shampoos and detergents used.
Hot water
Limescale build up in pipes can increase your energy bills by up to 25%.

Heating a tank of water can take twice or even three times as long as in a soft water area.
Water flow through a shower head can reduce by 75% in just 18 months of untreated hard water.
The Cotswolds lie in a hard water area where the minerals in water create limescale deposits when heated. The most visible sign of limescale in your home is furred up kettles and hazy glassware, but the hidden problems are costing your household hundreds of pounds a year. News from Christ Church We read: Lots of people go to book clubs these days. Libraries run them, environmental groups do, political groups too. People read the same book beforehand and then meet to share their perspectives and insights. There are a surprisingly large number of ways to interpret Pride and Prejudice. We do the same kind of thing together in the churches. Usually, but not always, we meet to discuss a part of the Bible. We have different insights and perspectives on what we read. We don’t always agree either, but we do find it enriching and life-giving. On Friday afternoons at 2.00 pm in Lent, for not much more than an hour, we will search for what God is saying to us through the scriptures.
We party:

St Michael’s Catholic Church celebrates St Patrick Night’s each year. There is food and music and good company. This year it is on the evening of Friday the 15th of March and we at Christ Church are delighted to once again be the venue for the event. It is good when we work together! I have heard really good things about it and never managed to attend, but this year it is booked into the diary, firmly.

Mayor’s Report This is quite a difficult report to write, since as I am sure many of you will already know, my husband Brian who was also my consort died at the end of January. It was very sudden but very peaceful. My thanks to all of those who have supported me over the last few months. Brian tried to attend as many meeting and events as he could, to support me as Mayor, and he will be very greatly missed by many people. I had hoped to hold a surgery in March, however the date falls just after my husband’s funeral, so that’s not possible I’m afraid. However, please do contact me via the Council offices if you need to speak to me urgently. We are fast approaching the new financial year and busily sorting budgets. We know as a council that whatever decision we make it will not please everyone, however we need to try and balance everything and to prioritise what is most important for the town as a whole. We only have one pot of money and once it has gone – that’s it. If you feel that you personally can make a difference for Tetbury, then this could be your opportunity at the next elections in May.

We are hoping to get this area all levelled off and tidied up soon, to give us extra stallholder’s space. Kind regards,
THE NEW PICKET HARP ALLOTMENTS Many residents of Tetbury are unaware of one of the town’s hidden assets, located by Cornwall Close, off the Hampton Road – the New Picket Harp allotments. The current allotments, together with all the house plots in Cornwall Close, form a site that dates back to the 18th century. It was sold by the Feoffees in 1840 and remained in private hands until 2007. The developer of Cornwall Close then bought out the site. After strong representations from various bodies and individuals the developer agreed to keep a quarter of the site as allotments. Ownership was passed to Tetbury Town Council in 2011. The Council gave responsibility for day-to-day management of the site to an Association of tenants. The name of the site is recent, but based on a previous name of Pickett Harp. Where this came from is somewhat of a mystery, although if you look at a satellite map of the allotments and Cornwall Close (and squint a bit) you can imagine a harp shape! The site consists of twenty-eight plots, each of around one hundred and twenty square meters. All allotments have sheds and taps. Water troughs are evenly distributed over the site. A Community Orchard has been created for all plot-holders to benefit from and enjoy. There is growing awareness of the role gardening can have in promoting physical and mental well-being. Allotment gardening also gives a great sense of achievement – your own freshly picked fruit or vegetables always taste better than their supermarket equivalents. If managed properly, an allotment can produce enough food to supplement a family’s weekly shop, with fresh fruit and vegetables over the year. If you would like to be added to the waiting list please contact Tetbury Town Council on 01666 504670 or email executiveofficer@tetbury.co.uk and your details will be passed to the Association secretary. Girlguiding last month, (along with three others,) are helping across all units. Some of them are working on their Duke of Edinburgh awards through school; the good news is that all of them have come up through Brownies and Guides and are now giving something back. We really hope that some will remain in Guiding and become full leaders as soon as they are eighteen. We are also delighted that one of our leaders has also persuaded a friend to come and help at Brownies – welcome Cheryl! We would love another leader to join us on a Monday though, so if you want to find out more about the fun we have, get in touch.
Wow! Guiding in Tetbury started in 1920, which means we are 99 years old this month – we’d better start planning our celebrations for next year! If you were a past member and would like to be involved or kept up to date
with news, please let me know. Our five units rely on volunteer leaders to keep them running and in addition to them, we’re delighted that we have a further eight young people regularly helping, too. All five leaders, who were presented with their Baden-Powell awards

The Rainbows took part in a ‘future strategy’ session recently, to tell Guiding what they think about being a Rainbow. They all love making new friends and having fun – and this really sums up what we are trying to do! They had fun decorating glass jars to put their ‘Thinking Day’ candles in too, and I hope lots were on display on the 22nd of February. Both Brownies and Guides celebrated Chinese New Year with lots of different activities. It seems most included food and it is amazing how a race to move the most sweets can fit into that theme, if you’re using chopsticks. The Guides used Maltesers, but the Brownies had the harder task with Smarties!

Guides have started on their next ‘Skills Builder’ theme and this term it is called ‘Network.’ It is all about team working. They tried a game where they had to use different motivational techniques to help their team member do better. Brownies have tried ‘edible architecture’ – where once again food was involved. Very popular is the new Brownie ‘Baking Badge.’ I hope they take samples in for the leaders to taste! Another new activity that the Brownies tried made things look like ‘Strictly Come Brownies,’ as they learnt the Macarena and found out how tricky it can be to write the algorithms which help to teach dance moves.

If you have driven or walked past Avening School recently, you couldn’t have failed to notice our fantastic new outdoor classroom - funded by ‘Awards for All.’ This invaluable addition to our outside space will enable the children to do more of their learning outside. Forest school sessions have commenced during the school days each week, with children learning vital outdoor skills and a knowledge and respect for the natural environment. Our weekly Fledglings session for pre-school children have also resumed after the winter break and take place every Friday from 2.00 to 3.00 pm. Contact the school if you’d like more details about them.
The corridors are looking amazing at the moment, adorned with work from every class, displaying their term’s topic learning. This month the Hawks class (y3/4) will be travelling to Caerleon in South Wales to explore the amphitheatre,
baths and museum as part of their topic on ‘The Romans’ - and the Kestrels are off to @Bristol as the culmination of their ‘Superheroes’ theme, which has seen them take a look at their own superhero powers, as well as learn about fantastic historical role models such as Edith Cavell. Our school Eco-Council, made up of pupils from years one to six, recently had a meeting with one of our parents who helped them do a school ‘Eco Audit’ and to produce an action plan. The children are really passionate about making a difference to the world in which we live. us a picture of a lonely boy, one of the ‘Raj orphans’ sent ‘home’ to England from the far reaches of the empire, to make his own way in the world.
‘Old Filth’ by Jane Gardam
‘Filth’ is the misleading soubriquet given to Sir Edward Feathers, a pillar of the establishment and always smartly turned out. Filth actually stands for ‘Failed in London, Try Hong Kong,’ a nickname given to him by his colleagues in the legal profession. But it is his early life which is the focus of this book, rather than his career in the Far East. After the death of his wife Betty, Filth is left to reflect on his long life - and as his memories begin to stir, so does the impulse to put matters long buried, to rest. Snapshots from his childhood give
This book split the book club. Some loved its gentle exploration of loss and friendship, but others found it hard to connect with the character, finding the story slow and disjointed - but it produced an interesting debate. We were offered glimpses of a deep rivalry, both personal and professional, but left dangling as to what had actually
happened. Perhaps this was a reflection of Filth himself, emotionally stunted by losing those he loved, he found it difficult to communicate his true feelings, and so we too are only ever given part of the story. Overall, we gave ‘Old Filth’ seven out of ten. It’s a gentle, sentimental book which provided food for thought – and good reason to read the follow-up novel ‘The Man in the Wooden Hat.’ Ghilly Vincenti, Chelworth Bookworms

This is on the escarpment edge, so it’s becoming clearer what a fine defensive position it was, overlooking the Severn Vale. We have not had any footpath work allocated recently – Gloucestershire County Council have terminated the highways contract with Amey and taken the work back ‘in-house,’ into their ‘Rights of Way’ department. We await the council reassigning the priority needs and allocating the materials to us for the required installations of footbridges, gates, steps and so on.

Hedge Laying The Warden’s work party have spent many of their Winter sessions hedge laying. We have completed two long length of hedge; one at Pinkney near Sherston – the other alongside the Cotswold Way above Wottonunder-Edge, going up from Conygre Wood to Westridge Wood. There, the lovely Beech tree woods are on one side and the field’s boundary hedge, which we tackled, is on the other side.
The hedge had become very tall, turning into trees and making the trackway rather dark. Now that the hedge has been tidied and layed, the light is let in from the field and the view opened up and we have been complimented by users of the Cotswold Way, which is our National Trail.

History of Tetbury Society ‘Margaret Hills - from Suffrage to Citizenship’ was the title of Chas. Townley’s talk to HOTS on the 7th of February. She was the wife of Dr Harold Hills, who set up his GP practice at 11 Rowcroft, Stroud in 1922. Clearly an intelligent lady, she opened a branch of the Women’s Citizenship Association in 1923, to widen her life beyond her ‘unpaid domestic duties.’ In 1928 she was the first woman to
be elected to Stroud Urban District Council, and was Vice Chairman in 1935. She was a member of Gloucestershire County Council from 1937 to 1954. But Chas’s real interest was in her early life. She was born Margaret Robertson in 1882 in Primrose Hill, London and had a relatively privileged early life and education. She obtained a First Class honours degree at Somerville College, Oxford in 1904 and a BA degree at Dublin in 1906. Initially, she was a teacher - but in 1908 she joined the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies and quickly became a paid organiser for the society. This was the non-violent movement of which Millicent Fawcett was the leader; it was she who was commemorated with

a statue in Parliament Square last year. Members were known as ‘Suffragists.’ The ‘Suffragettes’ were the militants. The Suffragists organised meetings to promote their cause, and the first report of Margaret being involved in one was at Macclesfield in 1908, where there was much abuse and harassment of the women. Margaret was the main speaker at Manchester Free Trade Hall, by 1909. Other ‘Open Air’ meetings, and ‘At Home’ meetings in grand houses and at factory gates were also reported. There was a caravan tour in Yorkshire and pressure on candidates at a by-election in Oldham in 1911. Pressure on local councils was also organised – and in 1913 a ‘Great Pilgrimage’ drew women from right across England, to a large meeting in Hyde Park. Similar meetings took place in Cheltenham and in the Market Place at Cirencester. At these meetings women were greatly abused - and eggs and tomatoes were hurled at the speakers. Eventually the Suffragists had meetings with senior MPs including H. H. Asquith and Ramsay MacDonald, but their cause was not helped by the militancy of the Suffragettes and, of course, there was militant Irish Home Rule action at that time. Margaret was one of the delegates that met the Prime Minister in July 1913. Life changed for Margaret in 1914 when while on holiday in Italy, she met Dr Hills. They married on the 6th of August 1914 and Harold reported for military duty that evening. He was taken prisoner in France later that year but was repatriated in a non-combative prisoner exchange in July 1915. Margaret lived in Walsall and worked on Children’s Services and their daughters were born in 1917 and 1919, before they settled in Stroud. The weather was unkind to HOTS, but forty-four members still managed to attend the meeting - and thanked Chas. in our traditional manner. Annual Reports were distributed for the AGM, which will form the beginning of our next meeting at 7.30 pm at Christ Church on Thursday the 7th of March. Jane Haines will then tell us about the original incarnation of the ‘Tetbury Advertiser’ published at the end of 19th century. History of Tetbury Society

system has had a full repair service carried out and we have improved the way the system is operated. Once again, the hall is nice and warm for its users. Over the next few months, we will be making other fixes
and improvements to extend the life of the hall just a little longer, so if you are thinking of having an event or a party please do think about using your local hall. Steve Scott, Dolphins Hall Committee
…working on the requirements and initial planning for phase two of the building project, the new Dolphins Hall. By the time you read this, you will have hopefully seen the first draft of the plans for the new hall and had a chance to comment on them. We don’t expect to have got it right the first time so by now we will be taking on board all the comments we have hopefully received and will be working on revising the plans. Hopefully, for next month we will able to share the updates and ask for more comments before submitting the plans to a pre-planning process at Cotswold District Council. In a few months’ time we will be holding our AGM. At the meeting each year a number of residents are voted onto the board of trustees to serve for one year. Maybe you could be one of those residents? On Wednesday the 13th of March there will be a drop-in session at the Dolphins Hall between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm, where you can come and find out what it means to be a trustee, how to apply and to ask any questions you may have.
Are you looking for financial advice in later life?
Coming to find out what it is all about will in no way commit you, but it may inspire you to realise how you could be an asset to the community of Tetbury. If you are interested in what being a trustee entails but you are unable to attend the dropin session, please contact me on chair@ dolphinshalltetbury.co.uk and I will do my best to answer your questions and to provide the information you need.
Why use a SOLLA member?
With the hall now fully open again for bookings, we have begun the process of ensuring it provides the best space it can do for the people of Tetbury - until it’s replaced with a new one. So far, the heating

In World War II he served with the British Expeditionary Force in France, employed as a ‘Conducting Officer’ and tasked with supervising journalists who were visiting the front line. Not to be beaten, he did indeed join the Home Guard in Caterham where he lived - and he also toured the country with ‘ENSA’ – the Entertainments National Service Association.

Meantime, rehearsals are going well! The session we spent developing our characters was excellent and I do think you will notice this when you come to see the play between the 25th and the 27th of April at the Dolphins Hall. I mentioned, in my write-up for the autumn production, that Tetbury Fire Service kindly lent us their back room for rehearsals; well - they have extended their hospitality to us once again, so a huge thank you to them once more, for their kindness and generosity. Before Christmas we’d never seen our Tetbury firemen in action. The other evening, we did! The speed they moved at in responding to a ‘shout’ was amazing. They really are an impressive team. Eating Out Having spoken previously about discovering tuckedaway eateries, like The Bell at Sapperton, a rare opportunity presented itself for both Flossy and me to try out somewhere new. I’d heard tell that The Daneway, also in Sapperton, was worth a visit - so, in typical style (with no booking and entirely ‘on spec,’) we headed there hoping it wouldn’t be busy, what with it being a beautifully warm Valentine’s Day... Driving through sunlit lanes, impending spring was in the air as we pulled up outside. We toyed with the idea of eating ‘al fresco’ but, since this was our first visit, it seemed sensible to check out the interior, which was homely and nicely arranged into small-ish sections, with old racing photos, along with other interesting bits and pieces. And the ex-carpenter in me couldn’t help but admire the bar itself, which appeared to have been fairly recently stripped back to what looked like bare elm, but I wouldn’t swear to it. Lovely!
Anyway, alongside a tempting list of sandwiches, a nice-sized menu had a selection of nibbles, including whitebait and a small Cornish Yarg pasty, and an interesting range of starters, like panfried sardines, chorizo and mushroom bruschetta on sourdough (Flossy’s choice) and pigeon, black pudding and crouton salad (mine). After a brief comedy moment

in which Flossy went to cut through the toast too close to one end and almost catapulted the topping off the plate, both starters went down very well. The pigeon breasts were a little over-cooked for my liking, but they were full of flavour, and both the chorizo and black pudding had been splendidly chosen. On the mains list were some pub standards, but it was good to see a couple of vegetarian options and a few other delicious-sounding dishes of the day too, like lamb rump with chateau potatoes or an open steak and mushroom sandwich with truffle and parmesan fries, which I chose. Flossy investigated one of the veggie options: root vegetable pie with mash topping, carrot rosti and kale. My steak and mushrooms was delicious. The steak had been sliced, then both had been perfectly cooked in garlic and parsley butter and placed atop some toasted ciabatta, which soaked up the juices whilst retaining some crunch. It needed some seasoning, but I’m encountering that more and more these days; perhaps some chefs prefer leaving their customers to ‘season to taste’ rather then risk spoiling a dish? I don’t know. Flossy’s pie was hearty and filling and surprisingly umami* for a vegetarian option. The mash topping was smooth and included either kale or spinach and she said the rosti was a nice idea but that it could’ve been better executed, since it lacked a crispy outer layer. Mind you, she didn’t leave any, so I’m guessing it was OK! With a selection of Wadsworth beers and good wines, (although £7.50 for a mediumsized NZ Sauvignon seemed a little steep,) The Daneway has just about everything you could want. We certainly intend to go back when the weather warms up. Fill

Leighterton Primary School At Leighterton Primary School, we know how important it is to feel good about yourself so that you are ready to learn. Recently, as part of our work on developing the children’s wellbeing, we held a ‘mindfulness day’ throughout our school.
Apsemore Class: We listened to a CD that Cooper brought in. It sounded as though it was a storm and we closed our eyes and did some stretches. The music changed gradually, and it became very nice and calm and it made us relax. We did some mindfulness drawing and we coloured it in very neatly. Nathan (aged 4) and Stanley (aged 5.)
Bowldown Class: The children made glitter jars with recycled jam jars, adding liquid, coloured glitter and confetti. When they were full, they fixed the lids on the top so they wouldn’t leak and then taped them to make sure. When the jars are shaken, the glitter and confetti fills the jar and swirls around. As the children watch this, the glitter starts to settle, and it makes them feel calm.

Ridge Class: The day began with breathing exercises because we learned about good strategies we could use if we need to calm ourselves. We closed our eyes and pretended to blow bubbles. During another activity, we pretended that we were being blown into the ground. After that we coloured in boxes that we had designed, and then we cut them out and folded them. We used the boxes to collect positive comments. It is lovely to open the boxes and read all
After that the children listened to some music. They used pens and paper to doodle the mood of the music. When the music was loud, they drew large, heavy lines and if it was calm, they would draw calm things, such as the sea.

Tetbury Bowls Club Things are ticking over nicely here at Tetbury Bowls Club. Work on the new watering system is coming to an end and our green is looking - well - green again! March is the time when it’s all hands on deck to prepare for the start of the new season in April. There’s a spring clean of the club house and the changing rooms, an equipment check and final touches to our green. Fixtures are in place for our matches through until September, and we’re all looking forward to outdoor games in the sun again this year.

Try Tetbury before you travel, remember Tetbury Hardware is your local store and we can deliver locally.
Meanwhile, Friday socials continue to keep us entertained. Our lovely Bar Manager, Angela, makes sure stocks are topped up with our favourite tipples whilst Social Secretary Bev, organises weekly events. Bingo is always popular and on 15th February we had a fab ‘Love’ themed table top quiz. This month’s club Lottery winner was none other than our Chair, Angela Carey, who won £143. Of course, all these events also raise funds for the club – repairs and improvements don’t come cheaply.

Tetbury Police Museum and Courtroom
Sergeant Merritt figured in a strange experience, at the time when a Kingswood woman was murdered [about six years ago] in Tetbury. A strange man met the officer at a late hour on a Saturday night and quietly remarked that he ‘had just killed a woman.’ The Sergeant soon realised that the man was in real earnest.
At long last… …the final part of an epic tale from our Cold Case files. We do hope you’ve enjoyed reading this story and that it might tempt you to come into the museum and read more from our archives on display? We are open every weekday 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. The Tetbury Sensation 1924 - Part 4: The Execution Our research has revealed that the death of W G Bignell, age 32, was recorded in March 1925 in the district of Shepton Mallett, Somerset. Of further interest is the report
Shepton Mallet Gaol – the location of Bignell’s execution. When it closed in 2013, it was the UK’s oldest operating prison, dating from 1610.
in 1931 of the retirement of Police Sergeant Merritt after twenty-seven-and-a-half years of service.
ALLSEASONS COTSWOLD DRY STONE WALLERS
The man calmly went with the officer to a field on the outskirts of the town and showed him the body. In the early hours of the morning the murderer, whose name was Bignell, was handed over to the Wiltshire police - the terrible and deliberate act having been committed in a field which was then in Wiltshire and is now in Gloucestershire. All through the trial and at his execution Bignell showed the same unconcern and calm as he had when he communicated his startling news to the Sergeant on the Saturday night.
A small, friendly, family-run business with over ten years experience, we’ve worked on dry stone walling projects across the Cotswolds, both large and small. We offer competitive rates, free advice and free quotes

Tetbury Theatre Group We were very lucky to be able to travel to Cheltenham for our February theatre trip, since the day before we had lots of snow and we all wondered if we would make it. After a very slippery walk, (the side roads were bad,) once we reached Long Street our caring Council team had cleared the roads, so that was brilliant. Colin, our lovely coach driver, took us very carefully to the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham. It was a wonderful journey, as the countryside looked beautiful, covered with snow.
in many TV productions including East Enders, of course.) All the actors were very good. Since I always enjoy travelling on trains, watching all the houses and people when passing, (as they are often very near the track,) I can imagine how involved you would feel when seeing the same people as you commute every day.
We were going to see ‘Girl on the Train,’ the drama is based on the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins. I had read the book and could not imagine how it was going to be produced, but it was excellent! On the 18th of April we are going to see ‘The Remains of the Day’ at the Playhouse Theatre in Oxford. On the 9th of May its ‘Calendar Girls, the Musical’ at the Millennium Theatre, Cardiff, and on the 5th of June ‘Mindgame’ at Malvern Theatre. What does it do?
rg es . o
It saves the emergency services valuable time, if they need to enter a property, in an emergency situation. Not only does it help to identify who you are, it also identifies if you need special medication or have allergies. It is not only a potential lifesaver, but also provides peace of mind to you and to your family. You’ll know that prompt medical treatment can be provided and that next of kin and emergency contacts can be notified.
Who is it for? Anyone! Whilst it is focused on the more vulnerable people in a community, anyone can have an accident in the home, so this scheme can benefit anyone.
What does it cost? The scheme is free to the public and is funded by the Tetbury Lions Club.
You have probably all heard of ICE in your phone contacts? ‘In Case of Emergency,’ the telephone number of the person to be called. Well, the ‘Message in a Bottle‘ scheme takes this personal safety idea one step further, into your home. The green and white plastic ‘Message in a Bottle’ is kept in the fridge in a prominent place, so that it can be easily found and seen. In an emergency, the medical practitioner or paramedic can go there immediately to find all your key personal medical information. It might just save your life! The form inside contains all the key medical information needed to make a quick decision on what to do for you, next, if for instance you were to be unconscious
and not able to share the information needed for yourself. The ‘Message in a Bottle’ fast-tracks and focuses treatment, taking away guesswork and delay. This simple plastic bottle in the fridge can provide enough detail to ensure you are given the right treatment at the earliest opportunity, ensuring your needs met ‘right first time.’ The ‘Message in a Bottle’ is free, and your Social Prescriber at the surgery can help you fill in your form. Do it today and be reassured! Message in a Bottle, frequently asked questions:
What is it? It’s a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their basic personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location - the fridge.
Tetbury Sports Massage Sports, Remedial & Holistic Massage
Stiff & sore, neck, shoulder, back, knee pain? Have you injured yourself either through sport or everyday life? Is it putting you off sport/exercise or affecting your work? Eliminate aches & pains, increase your flexibility, improve your performance Sports massage can detect problems, prevent injuries occurring & speed recovery.
New Year fitness resolution starting to falter? Aching from a new exercise plan? Come and see me, I can help you stay on track. Christina Ticehurst BTEC ITEC MFHT 07738 597436 www.tetburysportsmassage.co.uk info@tetburysportsmassage.co.uk

All profits distributed locally and internationally
Who knows about it? All emergency services are aware of the message in a bottle scheme – and by displaying the green stickers in your home, the emergency services will know to locate the bottle in the fridge and to use the forms inside to ensure you are treated quickly. This can save time and save lives.
What’s in the bottle? A form you fill in with your name, medicines, allergies, and relatives contact details - and also two green stickers.
What do I have to do? Collect the bottle - available through your Social Prescriber in Phoenix Surgery. (I can also help you complete the form and an up-to-date medication list.) Fill in the form and put it in the bottle. Put the bottle in your fridge. Put one green sticker on your fridge door and the other green sticker on the inside of your house door. Done!
