Young by Name When Every Night is Fireworks Night The Lord Mayor of London’s proposal to abolish wood burners in the city’s Emission Zone should not have affected us out here in rural Gloucestershire, with our abundant supply of fresh air and local logs. I don’t know whether there’s a fuel equivalent to food miles, denoting how far a product travels from source to point of use, but the journey of some of the wood burned in our house can be measured in metres rather than miles. Even so, his announcement made me realise that it was time to replace my ancient
woodburning stove with a more efficient, less polluting contemporary model. The stove itself had been hinting to us for some time that it was ready for retirement. Bits kept falling off it, and running repairs had become more frequent. By the end of last winter, we’d reached the point at which closing its multi-paned double doors had turned into a Chinese puzzle. Unfortunately, I’ve always been very bad at doing Chinese puzzles. The stove’s efficiency was also decreasing. This went against the (wood)grain in a household fitted with solar panels, supplied by electricity from sustainable sources (Ecotricity), and populated by habitual wearers of jumpers, thermals and boots throughout the winter.
Considering that we’d bought it twentyfive years ago second-hand, for £150, we didn’t feel it owed us anything, so we made for the nearest stove showroom, prepared to splash out. We plumped for the most environmentally-friendly woodburner on display, designed to burn wood at the optimum temperature for fuel efficiency, while minimising emissions and particulates. In short: more heat for less logs – and a conscience as clear as the new stove’s window. Now in pride of place in our inglenook stands a neat iron box with one large rectangular window in its single door. The stove’s size and shape remind me of the television we had when I was a child, and it’s just as compelling to watch. Its clever design keeps the glass forever clear, providing a constant display of flames and sparks from an ever-changing array of kindling and logs. It’s like having a Guy Fawkes’ Night display in the comfort of my own front room. But best of all, the fire works. I wish you a cosy November, however you choose to keep warm. Remembrancetide is fast approaching and Lions members will be active again this year. On the 11th of November
Lion’s Den there is a ceremony in the Market Hall to Commemorate the Centenary of the 1st Wing (Training) Australian Flying Corps, who made use of airfields in this area during the first world war. The Guest of Honour will be Group Captain Carl Schiller, OAM, CSM, RAAF (Retired,) President of the Australian Air Force Association, Victoria Division. During the ceremony we will also exchange banners with the Lions Club of Point Cook Australia, whose banner recognises their ties to the RAAF at Williams Airforce Base in Point Cook - the birthplace of the Australian Air Force. On Remembrance Sunday, Lions will be attending the service in St. Marys’ Church, which will be followed by a parade through the town. As Lion’s President, I will have the honour of laying one of the wreaths at the war memorial at St. Saviour’s this year. It is with much sadness that we hear long serving Lions Club member Ron Poppleton has passed away. After distinguished service in the second world war, he was awarded the Légion D’Honneur. Avening Primary School Proud of our pupils! Sport has always been very prominent in our school and our pupils are given the opportunity to experience a great variety of different sports ranging from hockey to archery. We are only half a term into the new school year and already, our Avening sports stars have set a precedent for the year ahead with a recent win at the Quick sticks hockey tournament at Deer Park School and a triumphant performance by our y5/6 cross country runners who won the team race at Kingshill School. Looking forward, we have a girl’s football match and a netball tournament both at Kingshill, followed by a sports hall athletics event at SWR before Christmas. Last month we welcomed the new vicar of Holy Cross Church, Reverend Gerald into the school. He joined us for our harvest festival where this year, the pupil’s offerings were donated to Tetbury Food Bank. This month, the Reverend will be joining us again for our remembrance service held in the church and for a special service to be held during the forthcoming happiness week to coincide with national antibullying week. It was a very proud day on Friday 6th October when we opened our doors
to parents, relations, members of the community and prospective new pupils and parents, during our annual open morning. We couldn’t have been prouder of our fabulous members of the school council and members of y6, who took on the role of tour guides for the morning. One of the comments written in our visitor’s book truly reflects what a great job they all did: ‘Happy children, happy teachers and a lovely school.’ Aside from showing guests around the school, the school council have been run off their feet organising a cake stall to raise funds to buy new playground balls, as well as considering opening a KS2 tuck
shop, selling healthy snacks. They’re also planning ideas for Children in Need – one idea being a school ‘Danceathon.’ Watch this space for more on this! Thank you to everyone that has supported our Avening Primary School IT fund (APSIT). So far, we have managed to purchase a set of 16 LearnPads and 16 laptops, which will enhance our provision and help to ensure that our children become the digital citizens of tomorrow. Christmas in Tetbury Festivities Commence! As promised in my last article, here are the full details of this year’s Christmas Festivities. For more details of all the events, including an entry form for those wishing to have a stall at the switch-on evening, please visit our website: www. christmasintetbury.org.uk The Christmas trees and the lighting are to be installed during the week commencing Monday the 27th of November, brightening those dark winter evenings. The judging of the Christmas shop window displays will be held on Monday the 4th of December, from 7.00 pm. The theme is “The Twelve days of Christmas” and we look forward to seeing the wonderful displays for ourselves. The annual formal switch-on of the town centre Christmas lighting displays is to take place on the evening of Thursday the 7th of December and Church Street will be closed to traffic from 4:30 pm to 8 pm (30 minutes
later than in previous years.) This will allow stallholders and musicians to set up, and will also enable the procession to make its way safely from Saint Mary’s church. For those of you planning your journey home, do take this into account. There will also be a temporary “No Parking Restriction Order” from 3.30 pm in The Green, between Market Place Mews and St Michael’s Church. This will allow traffic
to pass through easily, without fear of obstruction or damage being caused to other parked vehicles. Those wishing to take part in the torchlit procession should assemble in Saint Marys’ church from 5:25 pm, where Santa Claus will be on hand to greet you, and Mel and I will be available to hand out glow sticks. The procession will leave at 5:35 pm promptly, to make its way to the Market House. At 5:40 pm, in front of the Market House, there will be entertainment from the children of St Mary’s School choir. They will also lead the community singing of “The Twelve days of Christmas” with Avening Silver Band there to accompany the singing.

Our Beavers, who are between six and eight years old, have been learning about healthy eating and cooking. They have made smoothies and their smiley face pizzas could have given the Great British Bake-Off contestants some serious competition!

Our Scout (10 ½ -14 yrs) adventures included the Strategy camp, where they roamed the 3,000-acre Cirencester Park enjoying over twenty activities, from pioneering to Supermarket Sweep, climbing to caving, and even nail-painting and custard
jumping! This was followed by a narrowboat trip where scouts gained their Power Coxswain badge. We welcomed back one of our old Scouts, Ollie Davis, who presented his World Challenge trip to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Speaking of adventures, Jean has been chosen to lead the Gloucestershire contingent to the Haarlem Jamboree (Netherlands) in 2019 and we hope some of our Scouts will join her! We have a few spaces in our Scout Troop available so please contact us if you are interested. Sadly, we do not have a Cub Pack (8-10 ½ yrs.) and would like to make this available. Can you inspire? Are you bursting with energy and ideas? Do you want to make a difference to young people locally? We urgently need extra leaders, helpers and/ or committee members. Whether you can spare an hour a week or a day a year, we have roles working with young people or helping behind the scenes. With full support and training, you can experience the fun, friendship and adventure of Scouting. And no, you don’t need to have been a Cub or a Scout. If you can help, please let us know! St Mary’s Playgroup As the evenings draw in and a nip is in the air, we are looking forward to the excitement that Autumn brings – with conkers a-plenty, playing in the beautiful leaves and splashing in a puddle or two! This term has been fun so far, as we are still getting to know our new recruits, while refreshing our knowledge of our ‘old timers’ and allowing them to lead the play with their interests. The Pre-schoolers have started their Forest School sessions on the St. Marys School grounds and have great fun finding plenty of mini beasts, climbing trees, enjoying hot chocolate, as well as “driving to the motorway” in their newly built “car.” Forest School is a fantastic opportunity in which to allow the children to take risks, develop selfesteem and learn through our natural world. We have been reading the little red hen during sessions and the children have been baking bread, grinding seeds and singing “Five Currant Buns” very loudly! The children have also been exploring natural objects such as conkers in the sensory trays - and proudly showing us their own found treasures. After showing a particular interest in money and shops, the children have also had great fun turning the role-play area into a post office and have been posting
letters and parcels. This evolved into a visit to the Post office in Tetbury, to explore the sorting office (which was enjoyed by the grown-ups too!) and posting their own letters home. They loved meeting a real life “Postman Pat.” Thank you to all those who made our visit so much fun! On the 22nd of October we hosted a Family Fun day (with a bouncy castle, bar and plenty of fun activities) at the Rugby club to help raise vital funds for educational resources – look out for an update next month! We also have a Winter Fayre in the Market Hall on November the 12th which will see many local crafters selling their wares. Please pop by for tea (or mulled juice) and cake and a little Christmas shopping.

Our seedlings group continues every Monday morning from 9.30 - 11.30 am at the front of the Christ Church. It is run by Kelly, our Playgroup deputy, and is a great opportunity to meet other mums and children in a relaxed and friendly environment. The group is now very popular, with different sensory/craft activities each week and plenty of toys for those at all ages and stages, so please feel free to drop in. There is a view that the phone first called a smartphone was launched by IBM 20 years ago and about the same time, something similar was also being introduced in Japan. As well as being a mobile phone, the IBM device, called the Simon Mobile Communicator, incorporated a touch screen, an address book, a world clock - and could be used to send and receive emails and faxes. By today’s standards it actually wasn’t all that smart and other hand-held devices had already been able to do some of those things, but the Simon did pave the way for lots of additional technology, like that introduced by computer innovator Steve Jobs, when he launched the first iPhone a decade later, with a small lens installed because it could even take photographs. And how did it impact Tetbury Camera Club? Well it certainly means that when our members set off to take pictures they are currently the exception rather than the norm, using cameras and not smart phones. Today’s digital cameras can be as simple to operate as a smartphone, or as technically sophisticated as a computer - it just depends on what you want to do with them and how much you want to understand the technology. With this in mind, we constantly expand the photo tips section of the club web site. We are delighted to have new members come along to our meetings to seek advice and share our knowledge, but if that seems a step too far, just have a look at www.tetburycameraclub. org.uk for help and advice. The Dolphins Running Club The Dolphins outgrow their pod! Tetbury Dolphins Running Club will be celebrating its first birthday in November. Due to the clubs overwhelming success, it has now outgrown the ‘Pod’ it shared with the Youth Club and is getting a new home at the Rugby Club.

The club has grown from eight members to 80 in less than a year. The club was founded by Eileen Hodgson and Susan Rawle. Their aim was to bring all runners in and around Tetbury together in a friendly, encouraging and all-inclusive environment by offering a broad range of paced groups and activities for all abilities. The club look to promote running both as a sport for the competitive enthusiast and as a recreational fitness activity. Over the past nine months TDRC have been working with Active Gloucestershire and Glos Girl Can to encourage people to get active by offering free Couch to 5k courses. The course aims to get complete beginners running 5 km in 10-12 weeks. So far the club has lead 24 new runners to complete the 5km course. Many of these runners have now become qualified Run Leaders and now training for 10km races. The club is not just about running, it has recently set up a Wednesday morning ‘Tot Trot.’ A leisurely stroll along the old railway every Wednesday at 9.30am, meeting at The Goods Shed. Suitable for toddlers, bikes, babies and buggies. A great way to meet other parents. The club have achieved amazing success in many events over the last year. The Dolphin Dash turned Tetbury turquoise with over 70 runners taking part in 5/10k events, Ruth Walker got 3rd place at the Cheltenham Challenge 10k, and Darren Mustoe took 2nd place in his age category at the Race to the Tower 2017 ultra-marathon, covering 56 miles.

Twelve new members of the club completed the Cancer Research Race for Life. A massive achievement, as these ladies had only joined the club eight weeks prior to the event. Eileen Hodgson took second place in her age category and Darren Mustoe took 18th place in his age category at this year’s Westonbirt 10k event. TDRC was awarded The Club Champions trophy at the Cotswold 24- Hour for their hard work and support during the event. Steven James clocked up 144 km and finished 13th in the solo category. Team captain Darren Shepherd successfully led the Tetbury Dolphins’ mixed relay team to complete 27 laps covering a total of 243 km in 24 hours! Twenty Dolphins completed this year’s Cheltenham Half Marathon. Six of the runners were first-timers who had only

The creep of the rubber stamp… Many years ago, I used to travel in faraway places and I collected a series of stamps and visas on my passport. The most exotic stamps would often denote the mark of a tyrannical regime. The rubber stamp did not feature greatly in Britain. When swearing papers, it was always enough to say that was your signature, rather than having to sign in the presence of the Commissioner that took the oath. But after 9/11 the process of authentication
became more demanding. The banks and the court officials - particularly in the Court of Protection, encouraged by the development of the Money Laundering regulations - have appeared to take a peculiar delight in rejecting documents that are important to the elderly and infirm. I can understand this on part, because I can recall being a part-time functionary in the courts, and being given a pile of divorce files to certify if the parties were entitled to be granted a decree nisi. The major excitement of the day was to spot an error in the papers and send them back…

If they fail, that choice has gone, if in the meantime they have lost their mental capacity. Anyone can then ask to be appointed by the court to take over the finances. although they will not necessarily be accepted, as the family can make representations. One solicitor in my employ had to certify that her client had capacity, but forgot to tick the box saying she was over eighteen. This came back to haunt us four years later, when we attempted to register. One nice old man struggled to date his signature in the year 2017, but he crossed the seven low down so that it looked like a two. I witnessed the document on the same day and certified it - but the application was rejected, even though the officials admitted when challenged by me, that the forms did not exist in 2012. To pass the certificate test when the document is registered, we must include the correct wording on each page and sign every page. The banks have begun to reject these, if they do not show the firm’s rubber stamp on them, even though I have not found anything in the regulations that say we must incorporate the rubber stamp. The land registry at least has the decency to ring me up if they cannot read my writing and ask me to confirm I did certify a document, but the banks do not, despite having my contact details. The courts loathe handwriting. This can lead to rejection if they can allege a different-looking name appears later in the document - even if a forename is in the wrong column, or looks vaguely different. Tetbury Nursery Playgroup Glitter season has begun at the playgroup! The children have just celebrated Diwali with lots of craft activities, including making sparkly clay candle holders. We are now about to start our firework display, where the children will be splatter painting, making kitchen roll rockets and Catherine wheels. Outside we will be building bonfires out of the natural resources in the garden. Children will be having hot dogs and jacket potatoes for snack.

At the play and stay group, Laura will be making her bread stick sparklers that go down so well with both the children and parents. The children are enjoying having a bigger say in the planning and it has been very interesting observing what has been selfchosen. Empty boxes that can be used for the small world toys, in the home corner or used in the creative area, has proven really popular. Now we have returned from the half term break the pre-school children have begun to practice for the nativity play, which will be held at the beginning of December. From Russia….. …with Marsha Lees, our speaker on the 7th of September. And what a good talk she gave! Now Living in Gloucestershire with her English husband, Bulgarian-born Marsha grew up in Moscow in the 1950’s and 1960’s from the age of six. She recalled the living conditions at that time, and how her family had interacted with the community. Enjoying a happy childhood, she praised her free education. Marsha illustrated the very poor and crowded living accommodations of many, but at no stage was she critical. Rent-free state-owned flats, allocated on the basis of five square metres per person, often led to a whole family of several generations living in one room, with shared washing and toilet facilities. Each family was allocated one ring on a fourringed cooker in a communal kitchen, which necessitated planned cooking.
Reactive people, political change and travel freedom led to improvements. Endless queuing for limited goods gradually eased except when the first McDonalds opened in Moscow in 1989. A three-hour queued formed for what was an eye-opener for Muscovites. But Marsha stressed Moscow had changed greatly. It had now become a busy modern crowded city with a thriving middle class, offering many shopping choices. She showed pictures of typical family life, activities and meals. On one public holiday, International Women’s Day, Marsha said it was customary for men to give flowers and a small gift, usually a cake, to the women in their lives. As a mark of respect, newly-married couples placed their wedding flowers on the grave of a soldier killed in action. It was a fascinating talk by a very articulate lady.

News from St Marys’ Church Goodbyes are as much a part of life as the seasons of the year. Those words are particularly poignant as November arrives. This is the time when the Church turns to remembering particularly those who have died: the goodbyes we have said to our loved ones, and to those who have served their country and their God. Remembering means – literally – to put something together, to “re-member”: integrating our past into our present. That means recalling all the good things and the difficult things about people, relationships, places and experiences which are now past. It means celebrating the “good stuff ”, and the way this has allowed us to become the people we are today. And it means facing things which have hurt and distressed us, and understanding how we can come to terms with those experiences.

For some time, a group of dedicated people have been working in Tetbury to produce a Neighbourhood Plan to plot the Tetbury of the future in terms of physical developments. The result has been the Tetbury and Tetbury Upton Neighbourhood Plan which has been submitted to CDC for examination by a Planning Expert to receive the go-ahead for adoption. The next step is a local referendum to accept the plan. This must have the result of a simple majority of over 50% so that it can take its place as part of local planning legislation. When the Referendum date has been decided, the Town Council will make the Development Plan available for all to read; please look out for advertised details - and more importantly make a strong effort to vote in the Referendum to accept the Plan so that it can be used to determine planning applications and guide planning decisions in Tetbury and Tetbury Upton. Two important developments for Tetbury: the introduction of CCTV cameras and the Neighbourhood Plan Referendum, both making sure that our town can safeguard its future, both in a physical sense and a planning sense, to protect and improve the environment.

Tetbury Town Youth Football The club is seeing some fantastic performances and results across the youth teams, which is testament to the dedication of our coaches, the commitment of our players and the support of parents. Regular updates and photographs are included on our Facebook page ‘Tetbury Town Youth FC’. The U7’s had their first taste of league football, with many having progressed
from the Tiny Tigers. Their team photo is reproduced here, proudly showing off their new kit and I would like to thank their sponsors, Tigger’s Nursery, who continue to support our youth teams. The FA is keen to promote girls participation in football and regularly arrange events nationwide to support this. The FA Girls Football Week takes place between the 6th and 12th of November. At Tetbury Town F.C., we have a number of girls enjoying their football alongside the boys, with many age groups at the club having mixed teams. We are pleased to announce that two of our female members have been selected by the Gloucestershire FA to become involved in their specialist programme,
which supports the development of elite female players across the South West of England. Grace Purnell was selected for the U12 ‘Gloucestershire FA Girls Advanced Coaching Centre’ and Sophie Norris was invited to join the U10 ‘Gloucestershire FA Girls Skills Extra Programme’ for the 2017/18 season. Well done girls! More specific training sessions have been arranged for our goalkeepers. Alan Knott, ex-England Schoolboy international and Portsmouth player, has kindly given his time to run a few coaching sessions for any budding ‘Bruce Grobbelaar’ or ‘Joe Hart’ within the club. Specialised training like this will be a great benefit to our players and teams. Thinking of buying a new Tablet or Smartphone? I have included a few basic things here, which you should consider before making your purchase. The size of the screen should be your first decision since generally, the larger the screen, the higher the cost. However, you may well be torn between portability and visibility, so do make sure you get this right. Smartphones and tablets can be used in many ways, such as a basic laptop, video phone, camera, camcorder, calendar, calculator, address book, diary, e-reader, SAT NAV, map, music player, video and games player, torch, translator, notebook, voice recorder, video player, photo viewer, alarm clock, TV and radio - among many
other things. There are two primary operating systems available, Apple iOS and Google Android. They are both easy to navigate and to use. You can use a wireless keyboard with any device - great if the onscreen keyboard is not to your liking. Will there be enough storage? Most Android tablets can be upgraded with at least a 32GB memory card, giving you extra space to store your photos and music, for instance. But if you are purchasing an Apple device, these cannot be upgraded, so do buy as much capacity as your budget will allow. If you are planning on storing all your stuff on the Cloud (Internet), this will not be an issue, but bear in mind the reduced speed of access, your data allowance and occasions when you may not have a connection. Your smartphone will come with a 3/4G data connection and Wi-Fi, but the former is only available on a small selection of tablets,
Computer Advice so do check this is built-in if you wish to connect to the Internet away from Wi-Fi. Don’t forget you may be able to create a Wi-Fi hotspot with your mobile for use with any Wi-Fi only devices. If you are with BT, you can access thousands of Wi-Fi networks for free using BT FON & Open Zones. If you are using an open Wi-Fi network, do be careful as it will not be secure. I would recommend using some additional security software, particularly if you are using banking apps. Consider battery performance. Some models will barely last a day, depending upon how you use them. External battery packs are available, though - useful to keep you going on the move. Many current wireless printers support mobile devices, which is useful if you do not have a computer. Once you have your new device, you will have thousands of apps available. Be careful, as some may not be as harmless as they seem. Do check the permissions before you install, as you may be giving far more data to a third party than you realise. Priory Inn Blog “November always seemed to me the Norway of the year.” Emily Dickinson One of the best mornings of the week for us, is our trip to the Saturday Stroud Farmer’s market, where we load up The Priory Inn van with seasonal vegetables and fruit. We get cheese and other dairy products from our network of 30-mile suppliers, trays of mushrooms and charcuterie from Monmouthshire artisans, and fruit, apple juice and honey harvested from ancient Gloucestershire orchards, at Days Cottage. A mild Saturday morning at this bumper time of year brings hordes of shoppers, spawning sociable and chattering queues at the most popular stalls. One of those stalls is manned by Jim from Hotchpotch Organics. Jim is described online as “Peasant extraordinaire - he likes nothing better than resting on his hoe and surveying his brassica patch; he’s a proud cauli-grower and a whirling dervish behind the market stall.” Jim’s vegetables are organically grown from seed, fertilised from grazed clover, irrigated from the sky and helped along if necessary with a minimum of fossil fuels. A combination of his farming methods and being picked at their peak, alongside Jim’s enthusiasm and knowledge, results in a taste sensation with all of his produce. The Christmas Party season is almost underway and we have a tasty festive menu with choices to suit everyone available on our website. This can be pre-booked every day for lunch or dinner between now and January 2018, for groups between six and sixty in number. If so then I should like to nominate the four ladies who volunteer to clean St Saviour’s Church every fortnight. I often walk there visiting my son-in-law’s grave, when I also pop into the church. Avening WI In September we did “Walk No. 4” on our new leaflet… …produced by the Parish Council “7 Walks around Avening.” Copies of the leaflet may be found in the phone box in Avening High Street, if you wish to try any of the walks. After the walk we lunched at the Kitchen in Minchinhampton. In October we are planning to walk around Kingscote. Our catering team provided a delicious Champagne Tea to celebrate a special birthday in Cherington, which was very much appreciated.
Several ladies attended the WI Autumn Council meeting, at the Pittville Pump Rooms in Cheltenham. The winner of the BBC TV “Sewing Bee” competition was the speaker, who gave a most interesting talk about how the programme was put together and screened. A party of nine members are looking forward to attending the “Crafts for Christmas Day” show at Birmingham NEC at the beginning of November. Indeed, there are lots of events planned for the Autumn and Christmas period. We will be running our Village Quiz on November 3rd, the proceeds of which will be donated to Tetbury Hospital. This year our Christmas shopping trip will be to Worcester on Friday 1st December. This will be during the Victorian Christmas Market which is only open for a few days. The Inspirational Dolphins Awards ceremony took place at the Dolphin the 29th September and was very well attended. The aim of the awards is quite simply to say a heartfelt “Thank You!” to the various groups and individuals who do so much for the town. These are the people who go “that bit further” and who are an inspiration to others. A special thank you to Tara, Georgina, Sandra, Tina and Caroline who worked very hard to put the event together. Councillor Kevin Painter, responsible for the concept of the award, told the Advertiser “It’s already been suggested
that this should be a biennial event, as there were so many busy people unable to attend the evening, and so many other people who are also truly inspirational, so the next event is now planned as a major event for the town involving even more celebrants. A candle loses nothing by sharing and lighting another candle, it only gains; that is how inspiration works - and why our town shines so brightly.” The winners at this year’s awards were: Tetbury in Bloom, the whole team and Sue Hirst, Chair, the Dolphins Hall/Recreation Committee and Maggie Heaven, the Chair, the Dolphin Amateur Dramatics Group and
Jenny Miles, the History of Tetbury Society and Joy Peerless, the Tetbury and District footpath group and Ian Thomas, and the Tetbury Civic Society and Roy Angell. We are now “into top gear” at the Dolphins Hall! Several years ago, £11.000 was given to the Dolphins Hall by Wessex Water Board with the intention that it be put towards a project. This money has now been voted by Tetbury Town Councillors to be released to The Dolphins Hall Trustees. At the September meeting of the Hall Trustees, all but one of the votes cast was in favour of the money being used toward re-vamping the front car park. This involves lifting the gravel and taking down the centre barrier. It is yet to be voted on as to whether the car park will be returned to lawn or tarmac, but all the people currently paying for car park spaces will be accommodated within another area of the Dolphins Hall. The gentlemen’s cloakroom and the disabled cloakrooms are now complete and sparkling, and the ladies cloakroom commences refurbishment on November 6th. The full refurbishment is also on-track, to commence on the 1st of August 2018 – and Joe Stockvis has been very busy obtaining quotations for new stage curtains and curtains for the main hall windows, too. Meetings are taking place with the Drama Group so that they are
involved in the process of installation; these will also be installed next year. The next Tea Dance will be held on Saturday 5th November, between 2.00 and 4.00 pm. These dances are held on the first Saturday of every other month, and the modest cost of entry, £5 per person, includes tea and cakes. The very talented Angela and Bryan Palmer also take a “Learn to Dance” class every Tuesday evening at the hall. Christmas Charity Challenge
BPF Fitness Hub Tetbury are holding a Charity Challenge… …on Friday December the 15th, in aid of Cotswolds Dogs and Cats Home. We are also hoping to have some canine supporters from Cotswold Dogs and Cats Home come and cheer us along, to keep us going. Cotswold Dogs and Cats home are an amazing local charity helping abandoned, neglected and abused animals in the Cotswolds area. The challenge will consist of two teams of BPF Hub staff attempting to lift 200 tonnes (200,000 kgs) in weight over a 14-hour period, by clean and pressing in relays! The team hope to be assisted by gym members who will pop in to help throughout the day. The time and dedication they both put into supporting the girls and volunteers is indeed an inspiration. We would also like to say how much we appreciate the support of local people and organisations. One example being Dave Kelly and The Priory Inn who invited 15 very hungry girls from 2nd Tetbury Brownies to make and eat their own pizzas. As part of their Cook badge the girls have been learning about, and cooking food from around the world. Our Rainbows unit have been using the outdoor facilities available to us at St Mary’s Primary school, where they’ve been learning about making and following tracks and trails. The girls were split into groups and made a trail for each other to follow. They really enjoyed collecting all the materials; twigs, pine cones, leaves and stones, they set about making a trail from the forest school area back to the hall. They were very good too as no one got lost! 1st Tetbury Guides continues to offer a diverse range of activities to the ever increasing band of young women, from bridge building (with spaghetti) to slime making (with talcum powder), from sewing badges on camp blankets to making chocolate brownies. The girls enthusiasm and appetite to try new things, working in small groups to plan and execute activities, is fantastic to watch. This term has seen us open up the Parent Rota for the first time in some 8 years. We are very grateful to those that offer up an evening of their own time as this means we can accommodate more girls in the group.

Taster packs for the new and updated Girlguiding programme to be launched next year, have recently been sent to us by HQ, and all the units are trialling them and reporting back on how they find them. Last month the girls of 2nd Tetbury Guides had the chance to see the new Senior Section resources and choose some to try out for the rest of the term. They will all be moving to the Senior Section soon. Other programme ideas were discussed and a Christmas visit to London by train is on the cards. This coming month girls from all our units will support Remembrance Sunday & Children in Need. In last month’s Advertiser the first 3 prize winners from our new 100 club were announced and the next draw will take place soon. “Before we left school, we split into groups so that we could see more when we got to We The Curious. We went upstairs and looked at the animation area. I worked with Edith and we made a short film using Lego. There was a machine that took shots of the landscape you created and you could move Lego people around slightly and take a shot. These shots were all put together to make it look as though the people were moving.” “Then we ate lunch together in a big hall. This was also an opportunity to find out what other groups had been doing during the morning.” “After that we went to the Planetarium, and as we entered, the ceiling was covered in beautiful, twinkling stars. We sat down and the seats went back so we could see the night sky. First, we watched a short movie about space. We found out about a worldwide competition to build a spacecraft to travel to the moon and to drive 500 metres, taking photos of what it saw. We looked around the galaxies in the sky and tried to spot where they were. The lady who was helping u, told us some information and asked us some questions. The movie was in 3D and it looked as though we were spinning around.” “When we came out, we had a last look around before going back to get on the coach to return to school. The changes in Gloucestershire roads since the early 18th century…
was responsible for ‘maintenance,’ so the standard was inconsistent as some found the cost excessive. Even the roads in towns could be in poor condition and Nicholas began by showing us Cheltenham High Street in about 1740!

Gloucester was the hub locally, especially as it was on the main crossing from England to Wales. The ‘Gloucester Journal’ in 1729 recorded coaches to Bristol, and a ‘waggoner’ taking goods and passengers to London once a week. Roads in the Severn Vale were poor and subject to flooding in the winter.
The original very ancient tracks, mainly used by horse riders, pack-horse trains or people on foot, were narrow, though drovers’ roads for moving cattle and sheep toward London were wider. Each village
History of Tetbury Society Changes were necessary as the country developed and improved travel facilities were required. Parliament began passing acts, setting up Turnpike Trusts which were empowered to improve and maintain the main roads and to levy tolls. Detailed schedules for tolls for each user of the road were included in the acts and gates were set up across the road to enforce the charges. The trusts did not always choose to maintain the current route and Nicholas mentioned the changes made to the roads from both Gloucester and Tewkesbury. Because of turnpikes, Cheltenham became an important junction. The turnpikes into Tetbury were from Cirencester and on to Bath – established 1743, to Malmesbury – 1756, to Wotton and Dursley via Kingscote and Beverston – 1758, and to Nailsworth – 1780. He drew attention to some of the more interesting road aspects in Tetbury, saying that the steepness of Blackhorse Lane was the reason for the packhorse bridge over the stream in Cutwell. Even some of the packhorse trains preferred to find an easier way! The ford alongside that bridge was obviously for drovers, wagons and other wheeled transport.

He also shared with us the road map published by John Ogilby which shows the route through Tetbury via Cutwell. That changed when the Turnpike Commissioners built Bath Bridge in 1775. In answering our questions, he said a Turnpike Act in 1780 made the towns responsible for the turnpike in their area - hence it was the Feoffees who widened Chipping Lane (now Chipping Street) in 1781, including the changes to the road from the north-east corner of the Chipping to Cirencester Road. We showed our appreciation as usual and Jane Haines drew attention to the booklet ‘Road Travel and Transport in Gloucestershire’, written by our speaker, which has recently been reprinted. ‘The Death of a King,’ (Edward II,) is the subject of a talk by Peter Petrie on 2nd March. News from Christ Church If I had to sum up our month of October, I would say it was about “discovering connections.” We celebrated our harvest festival and gave thanks to God for the beauty and fertility of the world. We remembered the deep connections between all parts of creation. Without water, there is no life, without the light of the sun there is no life, without oxygen there is no life – at least for most creatures. In the words of Chief Seattle, a Suquamish Indian and early speaker in favor of ecological responsibility: “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” We discovered another side of interconnection, when we did our Skype linkup with a community in Malawi. It was fascinating to read Bible stories about bread, water and land and to compare our own thoughts with the responses of those living in the villages of Malawi. We are very different, and yet there is so much we hold in common. It brought to mind for me the wonderful poem “Human Family“ by Maya Angelou, which includes the lines: “We love and lose in China, we weep on England’s moors,
We remembered a connection of a very different kind too, in our service of thanksgiving for those who had died over the past two years. This is often a very helpful service for people who have been bereaved who want to remember their loved one a little while after the immediate loss. Those we have known and loved we are not forever divided from. As the popular poem by Henry Scott-Holland puts it: “I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near. Just around the corner. All is well.”

In the past we have also run our own bar which was very profitable, but recently we have been told that this is no longer possible, so we will lose approximately £220 per production. However, times change and although we are still keeping prices under £10, our expenditure is going up.
Costume costs vary from one production to another and are usually about £300. We’ve consciously tried to reduce the cost of costumes – and £187.91 should cover this production. The set will cost £89.67, we have £63.47 spent on props, £162.78 on the lighting, sound and music and £214.75 on Insurance, per production. Last, the banners for Sleeping Beauty cost £80.00 – and £54.50 goes toward the raffle.

St Mary’s CE VA Primary School Outdoor Activities, Engineering, Cheltenham Literature Festival, Avebury and Lowfield Farm. We have reached the end of the first half of the Autumn Term and what a busy time it has been. Half way through September our Year 6 children went to Morfa Bay in South Wales, for an unforgettable week of outdoor activities. The children came back exhausted but full of stories. Here is what Charlotte wrote: “Once we arrived at Morfa Bay after a threehour long bus journey, we were split into

Fears were conquered, hidden skills were found and most importantly everyone had a great time. Then we went off to start our first activities. In the evening we went for a walk on the beautiful Pendine Beach and enjoyed some delicious ice cream and later some hot chocolate. Over the week, all the children participated in 11 activities – high ropes, climbing, zip-lining, abseiling, mud assault course, woodland scramble, archery, sea activities, WWI trench visit, beach walk and last but certainly not least, the Disco!”

Year 5 children, in the meantime, stayed at school and competed in the KNEX challenge, where they used their engineering skills to build amazing playground structures. Well done to Max Benfield and Sophie Norris, who will go through to the finals of the KNEX challenge in the Spring. Some of our pupils also widened their horizons this term by visiting the Cheltenham Literature Festival. Key Stage 1 children met some of their favourite authors and learnt how to illustrate stories and they were over the moon to meet the author of ‘Beegu’ a book they are all familiar with. Key Stage 2 children listened to some truly inspirational authors talk about their books and asked some deep and meaningful questions – even going up onto the stage in front of hundreds of people. What a great experience for everyone!

MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE FACING A FINANCIAL DILEMMA AS THEY GROW OLDER.
M
any people would like to make monetary gifts to provide immediate benefit to loved ones as soon as possible. But there is a growing fear that money could run out, leaving them unable to maintain a standard of living later in life, especially if long term care is required.
The cost of care can vary considerably across the country, and will be dependent upon the type of care and level of support you will require. This will often be determine through a care needs assessment. However, with the average annual cost of residential care around £29,270, rising to over £39,300 for nursing care, the spectre of having to sell your property to meet care costs looms large for many (Laing & Buisson Care of Older People UK Market Report 2014/15). Even if people choose to remain in their own homes and receive care there, the cost is significant. And on top of all this, there is the threat of Inheritance Tax (IHT) taking as much as 40% of assets exceeding the nil rate band of £325,000 for a single person, or where the full allowance is passed to the surviving spouse, £650,000 for a couple. This can have a serious impact on people’s estates. More and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put pay to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil band rate. For married couples and civil
partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee. We are now in autumn; the days are cooler, the clocks change at the end of October when the nights are darker earlier - however, autumn can be a lovely time. The trees are changing colour, which can look lovely especially with the sun shinning on the leaves. This shows us God’s creation when he made everything for its time. Our Michael Fest Celebrations started with an Evening of Song, Music and Prose – and it was lovely to see the Church full. Our thanks go to Kieran, who did a great job as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, and Graham our photographer. We hope there was something for everyone! We would like to thank our performers, including younger members of our congregation and girls from Westonbirt. All four girls played beautifully. The instrumentalists played beautifully too
and our singers, including Canon Tom Gunning and Avening Angels, were wonderful too. The poem and story that were read added a different aspect to the evening. Unfortunately, Fr Isidore was away, but in his absence Fr Modestus came and enjoyed the evening. I gave a word of thanks to all who took part, on behalf of the Parish Pastoral Council, and the evening finished with that wonderful hymn “Here I am Lord.” We look forward to welcoming the artists, plus a few more who were unable to be with us, next year! Our Mass of celebration which Fr Modestus presided at followed by a ‘bring and share lunch’ concluded the weekend. The Church had been beautifully decorated by our flower ladies and the smell was lovely. The money raised has been put toward the Parish refurbishment.

We remember all those who have died for their country and all those who have lived but are seriously injured. As the weather changes we should check that our elderly relatives and neighbours are alright. How can it be that the first term of the new academic year has come and gone? We have been having lots of fun learning all about ourselves and each other, talking about bodies, homes, families and pets! It was lovely to have visits from both Laura and her puppy Merlin and ex-Puddle Duck Daisy’s whippet Pearl and we have welcomed our very own stick insects to our room! Physical play and fresh air are essential for the wellbeing of children and we have been fairly fortunate so far this year, able to make full use of our enclosed garden, bug hunting, role-playing and producing some very impressive art work. The pre-schoolers made a giant footprint painting worthy of any gallery!

Two different year groups were undertaking their assessed expeditions, with the first being our Year 11 students. The Bronze expedition includes two days hiking and one-night camping, and working in small groups. The students have to work as a team by carry everything they need,
including tents and cooking equipment, And preferably not get lost! The weather couldn’t have been better, with clear skies and a good forecast, as they headed out into our beautiful Cotswold countryside. Over 30km walked with some tricky navigation but all the groups met this challenge head on to complete the expedition with flying colours. Two weeks later it was the turn of Year 10 students, again completing their assessed expedition. This time we headed to the North Wessex Downs - Uffington White Horse to be precise. This is a beautiful area highly recommended. Having worked with this group from the start, I always knew they were a strong group. And having observed how well they did on their practice weekend, I worked with Ocean Rock to increase the challenge. The students were impeccable, I could not fault any of them and neither could the Ocean Rock team who commented as follows: “We have not seen such a good group for some time in terms of attitude and demonstration of skills, it was the most challenging Bronze we have assessed this year.” While all the groups did exceptionally well, I do want to mention one group in particular. Life is often hard enough as it is, but when you have additional challenges to overcome it makes undertaking something like the D of E award even more impressive. Two of our students had the added challenges of visual impairment and hearing impairment to deal with, and although their team did a slighter shorter route they still hiked over 25km with full backpacks, over what was often very uneven ground. An inspiration and perhaps even a challenge, to us all! It is my desire to raise the profile of the Duke of Edinburgh Award here at SWR as we believe it is an excellent award for young people to undertake. The Bronze Award commences in Year 9 and so we’re already promoting it, and, given the level of interest, it could well be the largest group we’ve had, which is very exciting. Tetbury WI October’s meeting proved to be enthralling, entertaining and educational. This was all down to our speaker Frances Benton, who gave us a talk about pearls also known as “The Tears of a Dragon.” Frances lives in Burgundy and comes twiceyearly to the UK from France, to give several talks about her passion and love of pearls. This life-long love has led to her amassing a huge collection of pearls from all the pearlproducing countries of the world. She buys the pearls loose and spends the winter evenings ‘’knotting” them into necklaces, earrings and bracelets. We learned of the different types of pearls, their colours and how they are formed. Members were then invited to have a look at the vast display – to look, to try on and to buy -- which many did! All the money Frances makes goes to help a small charity in Durban, which helps the street children there. This charity is very personal to Frances and she so far raised several thousand pounds.

We learned one member had won an art completion and another had raised £2,257 at her Macmillan coffee morning. Our groups continue to be busy; the needlework group showed us the Elves they have knitted for the Westonbirt Christmas Fair and all the little hats for the babies at Stroud maternity unit and the garden group have had a trip out to the nursery at Miserden. The Supper club had a very enjoyable meal at the Close Hotel. Our next meeting is our Annual meeting, which will be held on November the 13th at 7.30pm in the Dolphins Hall.

I have been alarmed to hear – on several occasions and from different people – that they cannot believe that there are people in Tetbury who need to use a foodbank, and that those who do so are “scroungers,” who have brought their circumstances upon themselves. Nothing could be further from the truth. One young person who uses the foodbank had an accident and can no longer work. She is living hand-to-mouth until benefits are available to her – which will happen, hopefully, within six weeks – but this is only a hope! Many have had to wait much longer. Another of our users became ill and is now unable to work. He lives in a privately rented house with rental of £725 per month. His benefits total £820. The difference of £95 is all that remains to pay all his bills, to help him to feed and clothe himself and to pay for public transport to get to the Benefits Office in Cirencester. He told me: “I am so thankful to the Food Bank. I don’t know what I would do without it! Everyone is helpful and kind, and I’m treated as if I’m like everyone else – not as a “non-person.”

It has been a time of change for our group in the last month, with our Treasurer, Campbell Higgins, retiring from his position after sixteen years. We welcome Kara Hassett, who will be taking on this very important role. The Thirteen welcome Mike Avis, who has been elected to join them in the important work of supporting the Feoffees with our work in the town.
With Christmas approaching, this month you will see a lot of activity in the town and particularly at The Market Hall, where members of the Thirteen will be organising the installation of the Christmas lights around the building and the Christmas trees either side of the steps. Do stop to say hello if you are passing by. This month we have been pleased to support three local people with grants, which totalled £900. If you would like to know more about the type of grants and support available, please do not hesitate to contact us. Ethylene Glycol poisoning: It won’t be too long before we’ll experience more frequent cold and frosty mornings with iced-up cars, so it’s a timely opportunity to discuss the dangers of ethylene glycol. It’s a chemical that is widely used in many of the products we purchase in order to de-ice our vehicles. It’s not just used as antifreeze in car screen washes but can also be found in hydraulic brake fluid and radiator coolant. Many of you will know that, if ingested, ethylene glycol (also known as ethanediol) is extremely toxic to dogs, cats and humans, even in very small amounts. The sweet taste of the chemical means animals will drink it willingly from puddles, or lick it off their feet after walking under a leaking car.

Most poisonings occur in the winter when antifreeze is widely used or in the spring when radiators are drained. However, antifreeze containing ethylene glycol may be lying around in sheds and garages throughout the year. It’s important that you ensure containers are placed out of reach with the screw top tightened, and remember to check for any spillages under the vehicle when topping up the windscreen wash. How will you know if your pet has been poisoned? Stage 1: Initial signs occur between 30 minutes – 12 hours after ingestion of the poison. Signs can be subtle, and may include neurological signs such as lack of coordination of movement, salivation, weakness, convulsions and vomiting. These signals may be

Go on, you know you want to! Our trial of opening on the second Saturday of each month this summer proved successful, with 114 attending. These were additional visits which otherwise wouldn’t have occurred, and represent an average increase in visitor numbers of 7.2% for each month. A big thank you to the Town Councillors who staffed the museum each Saturday. We are considering continuing the Saturday opening, but really need further volunteers for a range of tasks and activities. And now another Cold Case from our archives: The Swing Riots of 1830/31 were disturbances which took place mostly in southern England. Agricultural labourers,
suffering low wages and a lack of work after several years of bad harvests, rose up when their employers introduced threshing machines. The riots got their name from threatening letters sent to farmers and other employers, signed “Captain Swing.”
Amongst the many arrested was Elizabeth Parker. She was cited as one of only two females who were transported for taking part in the Riots. She was sentenced to be transported, but never sailed, as she was pardoned a few months later.
The riots spread into Gloucestershire in November 1830, with the Tetbury area seeing the worst of the disturbances.
However, less than a year after being released from Gaol, she was back, awaiting trial for another offence. The circumstances in both cases reveal an intriguing relationship with Daniel Cole, parish clerk and assistant poor law officer in Tetbury.

Parker was committed to Gloucester Gaol on 4 December 1830, described as 23 and a “labourer”. She was in fact a prostitute, and unusually she could read and write. She was charged, on the oaths of Cole and others, with having been among a mob which destroyed a threshing machine belonging to Jacob Hayward at his farm in Beverstone, on 26 November. At the Quarter Sessions in Gloucester on 3 January 1831, Parker took the stand with 23 men. John Tidcomb, a Tetbury farmer, identified Parker as being part of the mob, and stated he heard her say, “Be d....d if we don’t go to Beverstone, and break the machine!” Cole stated he had seen the mob in Hayward’s yard, attacking the machine. He said Parker did not hit the machine when he saw her, but was holding a sledge-hammer. Isaac Hayward, the nephew of the prosecutor, stated he had seen Parker and some men in the act of breaking the machine. When it came to the defence of the accused, all the men produced character witnesses, but Parker had no-one to speak for her. The jury deliberated for 5 minutes, then found all the defendants guilty. Tetbury Art Society On Wednesday the 4th of October, we were visited by Phillip Kingsbury, his partner Catherine and their baby son too! Phillip, after attending art college, practised graphic design to make a living but now also makes lino prints. Over about a half hour, Phillip went through the process of making a design (in mirror image), transferring it to lino, cutting the design into the lino and printing it e.g. using the back of a wooden spoon to rub the paper onto the inked lino. Several ways of making multi-coloured prints were then described. At this point, the audience were invited to experiment with provided materials which they did, enjoying the remaining time carving, inking and printing. We were also invited to take part in the Inspirational Dolphin Award ceremony organised by our town council, with the suggestion that Barry Barnes would make a good nominee for an award since he contributed in other areas of town life too. We were happy to do that, as Barry has been an active member of our committee for many years. To give you some examples, he was responsible for the introduction of ‘5 by 5’s – (5-inch square pictures) - to raise money initially for Tetbury Hospital,
he proactively took on the organising of socials and trips, he runs our display of paintings at Tetbury Hospital (which still benefits the hospital) – and is truly inspirational. The only problem, which I feel sure other organisations share, is that we have many other members who also deserve to be recognised! I hope that there will be other opportunities in the future. From Friday the 13th until Sunday the 15th of October, we had our annual art sale in the Market Hall which I will be able to report on in the December issue of the Advertiser. Looking forward, at 7:30 pm on the evening of Wednesday the 8th of November in St Michael’s Hall, Allan Norwood will give us a talk about his experiences painting ceramics at Royal Worcester Porcelain.

Changes to the Village Agent Service Hello – as readers of the Tetbury Advertiser will know, my name is Aileen Bendall and I have been the Village and Community Agent in this area of the South Cotswolds for the last six years. From the 1st of October
this year, our scheme combined with Social Prescribing to become a new service called “Community Connectors.” I will continue to work in the South Cotswolds including Tetbury, Avening and the surrounding areas. In addition, there is another Community Connector, Lisa Hepworth, who works from a number of the surgeries in this same area. We, together with our other colleagues
across the whole of the Cotswold District, will be available to continue offering support to anyone over the age of sixteen. As before, there will be one-to-one support for individuals and signposting and referrals to activities and to other groups in our area. The service can be helpful for all people in times of change (after redundancy, health issues, retirement,) in times of emotional hardship, such as bereavement, when there are worries around debt or financial issues, to anyone who doesn’t otherwise know where to turn for support – and for those who would like to volunteer in the community.

Maggies Tetbury Cares Your Maggie’s Centre in Cheltenham
The Maggie’s charity arose from the idea of a lady called Maggie Keswick Jencks in Edinburgh. Maggie was diagnosed with a terminal cancer, and whilst she felt the Doctors and the treatments she received was fantastic – she also felt that once diagnosed she had nowhere to go where she could have space and time to think, talk and get support. In 1996 the first Maggie’s centre was opened in Edinburgh. Sadly, Maggie, despite being involved in the design and planning of the centre, died shortly before it opened, but her thoughts, ideas and ethos are very

The visual field machine currently in use at Tetbury Hospital will be past its useful life early next year, and if it’s not replaced, it would mean patients having to be referred to clinics at other hospitals, travelling much greater distances. Further, without a visual field machine, the ophthalmology service at Tetbury Hospital would not be sustainable, impacting negatively on current patients, particularly those with glaucoma who need to visit the hospital regularly to monitor their condition.
