Stone Age spear point to the solar powered lamp, captured the public’s imagination.
History in 100 Socks During a rare and much-needed tidying blitz on our house, I fall to musing on the current fashion for summing up a topic by listing 100 of something in a particular category. Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, kicked it all off with his fascinating BBC Radio 4 series, “The History of the World in 100 Objects. His list of iconic items, from a
Its success sparked many equally fascinating copycat series. I’ve just downloaded podcasts of “The History of Music in 100 Pieces”, and the Bath Fashion Museum is nearing completion of its History of (you guessed it) Fashion in 100 Objects.
Sock It To Me Turning out my husband’s wardrobe, it occurs to me that I could write his life story in the history of his socks, all of which seem to need pairing. Piled on the floor before me are at least 100, some so ancient that carbon dating would not go amiss to ensure the accuracy of my proposed catalogue. To get an easy tick – and to stop me losing the will to live before the task is complete - I marry up the obvious matches first, such as the scarlet pair to be worn with his kilt. (He’s not eccentric he’s just Scottish.) I then sit quaking as the enormity of the remaining task dawns on me.
Sock Swap Meanwhile next door in our daughter’s bedroom, where she is tasked with tidying up, all is quiet. On enquiry, I learn that she is “taking a rest” about five minutes after starting, as discouraged as I am. “I’d much rather do what you’re doing,” she hints, and I’m quick to agree to swap.
Andrew’s Mobile Disco
By the time my husband’s socks are paired and restored to his sock drawer, my daughter’s bedroom is immaculate. She’s also richer by nearly £14 from the notes and coins I found languishing forgotten beneath the dust and toys.
Sock Tension But where is my husband all this time, I hear you ask, and why was he not pairing his own socks? Surely neither my daughter nor I should be doing his wardrobe maintenance chores for him, in this liberated age?
Andrew Kent
She welcomes less enthusiastically the chocolate butterfly that was best before July 2014.
Hold fire before you condemn him: he is spending all day out of doors, tiling the roof of our new extension. As someone with the head for heights of Humpty Dumpty (though thankfully not quite the waistline), I’m happy to suppress my natural feminist leanings when it suits me. After all, one man socks are another man’s poison.

Isn’t it strange how some childhood activities often lurk deep in one’s memory, only to surface again many years later? This time of year particularly, I am always reminded of the poem by John Keats I had to earn at school, “Ode to Autumn.” “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun …” Come rain or shine though, Lions activities continue apace. Provisional planning is now underway, considering a conference later in the autumn. We’re examining how Tetbury Lions might facilitate a presentation of all service activities within the local area, so anyone in need could readily identify, from one central source, what is available to help them. Most recently, the Lions turned out in numbers to support the Classic Car Show at the beginning of Sept. Through the work of others, this event has grown to become a major event in the Classic Car calendar and
Lion’s Den
we were pleased to give practical support. Whilst much of our Club activity and support focusses on Tetbury, we do from time-to-time support urgent requests for assistance from further afield, whether in the UK or abroad. LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation) can react immediately to urgent crises worldwide – and recently sent a major donation to support the survivors of the earthquake in Italy. You may like to know that Tetbury Lions provided £1,500 towards this international donation. Having money in the bank, now, means that our Lions colleagues on the ground in Italy can react very quickly. Not all Lion’s events involve work though, we sometimes just enjoy ourselves! With that in mind, many of us went over to The Spice Merchant restaurant in Malmesbury for a sociable meal together. It was a great evening and we are planning another at The Snooty Fox in December. Several of us are also going to support the local Rotary Club at their annual Horseless Team Event in Badminton Park on the 2nd Oct. They supported the Lions Wacky Races and it is good to have the two organisations
helping each other in this way. Early in October, Tetbury Lions will have a visit from our regional District Governor. It’s an opportunity for him to learn about some of the things we are doing here in Tetbury and, equally, to hear from him about activities run by other Lions Clubs which we might consider appropriate here. For our Lion’s Club, October is a very special month as, on 23rd October, we celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of the formation of the Club. Whilst not the oldest, we are certainly one of the largest, and most active, Lions Clubs in our region. Over the years, in addition to providing hands-on support when needed, we have raised many hundreds of thousands of pounds for those in need in our local area, and we look well-set to continue our charity work for many years to come – so if anyone feels they might be interested in finding out more about what it means to be a Lion, please do get in touch. Girlguiding How many things did you manage to tick off our bucket list last month? We have received a wonderful donation from a Tetbury resident, which will help us deliver even more opportunities on it – thank you! Here are reports from two of our members who really hit the jackpot with their opportunities:
trip, our experiences and assisting them in their project about what Europe means to different Europeans – after Brexit. Of course, all of this was possible thanks to the support I received from The Feoffees of Tetbury, the Tetbury Lions club and the general generosity of the people who visited Guide stalls at the Flower show, Woolsack day and the Christmas lights.”
and how to achieve it. The following days included workshops on social media, handling stress and being resilient and a PR workshop which helped us prepare for our appearance on the local BBC news! |I absolutely loved the camp and definitely got some valuable advice and experience to take away with me, to use later in life and as I prepare for my GCSEs.”
Holly Turner had what could be a lifechanging opportunity – who knows what doors might open!
The rest of the District had a great camp at Cowley near Cheltenham in August in great weather. We took 31 Guides from all 3 units – 25 had never camped before but they all worked and played hard together and gained their camper badges. I’ve heard that at our final camp fire “The Story of Cecil” entertained three ex-members as they relaxed in the outdoor pool at Cowley Manor!
Hannah Moody was selected to join a County trip to Europe and had spent the previous year working hard to raise the funds to pay for it. “Despite not knowing any of the other Guides at the start, by the end we were firm friends who are still in touch. The trip itself was 8 days, starting at 4:30 in the morning at Gloucester bus station and ending there at 11:15 a week later. We spent a day traveling around Brussels searching for European comic murals scattered around the city, possibly the strangest treasure hunt ever.
Camp CEO was for Guides aged 14 - 18 which aimed to advise them on their career aspirations whilst supporting them to become future leaders in power. “I thought this camp sounded amazing and decided to apply right away. The application process wasn’t easy – first I had to write details of my career aspirations, social life etc. I was very nervous when I found I had got through and had to have a telephone interview led by the event organiser. Soon I received an email confirming that I was one of just twenty girls from around the country to be offered a place! I was very nervous, however, as soon as I arrived I was met with friendly faces.
“We also had a great time looking around Paris, Brussels and Bruges, taking in the architecture and seeing the sights. One moment I’ll never forget was after our visit to the European Parliament building, we ran into a group of European Guide Leaders – 3 Germans, 3 Polish and 1 French. We had a great time talking about our
“After ice-breaker games, we had a setting aims workshop and had to write our hopes and fears on a sheet - hoping to eliminate all the fears and fulfil all our hopes by the end of the week. We also made Smart Goals which stand for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. These helped us to see what we wanted to get out of the camp

Tetbury Rail Lands Trust This August and September we’ve made an Olympic sport out of fundraising… …and Jill Dodge and John Andrews both deserve gold medals for their dedication and track records. Sue Brown offered to let Jill pick all her lovely dahlias for the last month to sell for the Shed. Jill came home from one of her dahlia picking forays soaked to the skin but still marvellously enthusiastic and went on to make £92 from these flower sales! On Heritage Weekend the community was invited to sign bricks and see the progress so far. Although it swilled with rain it didn’t dampen spirits and the atmosphere was fantastic with the chance for the intrepid to go up ladders into the roof space and admire the newly treated timbers which are now looking great. Everyone was excited to see what is taking shape ready for delivery of Phase One by this Christmas. It will be amazing to have a local cinema once again showing recent releases and streaming National Theatre productions live, with something for everyone, including special showings for babies with their mother’s right up to classic golden oldies known as the Silver Screen. There
will be theatre in all its forms (did you know that the word theatre means to behold?) and there will be plenty to capture our imaginations and inspire us. The team at the Goods Shed are currently planning next years’ programme.
would be possible. John Andrews has also been amazingly effective and has come up with lots of initiatives which he is busy auctioning and most days feature a visit with happy news of his latest fundraising victory. It reminds me of Rod Stewart singing “Crazy she calls me” which contains the lyric “The difficult, I’ll do right now, the impossible will take a little while..!” The last Car Boot sale was well attended and the team moved on to the recreation ground in the afternoon for the Summer Show. The Goods Shed train was included in the procession with my grandson Harry driving and David Walker and Graham Cleaver pushing it along. By the end of the day we had raised over £350 and sold some more of our seats.
The generosity of individuals and groups within the community has been wonderful and by the end of this month we will have 92 seats paid for and just 90 to go, so we should soon be able to place our order. Jill held a Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy sale on Saturday 10th September which featured a freak storm with thunder and dramatic lightning.
We also had a stall at the Classic Car Show which attracted a lot of local interest and spontaneous offerings to buy bricks, seats and of course more dahlias! No fundraising opportunity has been missed and I would like to thank the team and the community for getting behind us in our hour of need.
All the soggy tables and chairs were moved inside onto Jill’s carpets and the show went on! This event raised £300 which went towards another seat and Jill has chosen Rainstorm as the name for its little brass plaque.
If you would like to join our dynamic group to help us with the challenges of fundraising and planning programmes we would be pleased to welcome you. Please visit our website www.tetburyrailands.com or shed-arts.co.uk/contact. Failing this you could simply ring me at home on 01666 502877 Thank you for your continued support.
Jill would especially like to thank all her loyal helpers, without whom none of it

Recording The Railway Shed Progress Anyone heading for Tetbury’s Herd Lane, the old railway line or the town’s long term car park must be pleased to see the progress that’s being made on the restoration of the historic Goods Shed. The transformation from rather neglected industrial relic to creatively designed, versatile and stylish arts centre is racing ahead - so swiftly that it is already easy to forget just how much has changed in the space of a couple of months.
The team behind The Goods Shed restoration is keen that a full record is kept of how it once looked and the various stages of redevelopment work, so over the summer months Tetbury Camera Club has been helping with this by regularly photographing progress on the site. The picture with this article is one of the shots taken by member David Jones before work began. Not only does it illustrate the entrance canopy as it had been for many years, without the luxury of glass to provide shelter, it also demonstrates a good tip
Tetbury Camera Club for anyone planning to take architectural photographs in the future -- don’t forget to look up and down, as well as straight ahead, before you press the shutter release. Some of the best shots, particularly when photographing buildings, are often had just by looking for a different angle. Among the most interesting aspects of our regular club meetings are the tips we pick up from the various speakers who join us for presentations throughout the year. They all have different photography styles and interests, from landscape to still life, wildlife to portraits. Some things that are common though are their knowledge, enthusiasm and expertise and we generally end our regular Tuesday evenings at The Priory having learned something new and been inspired to try something new. This season should be no different, since among the speakers we have scheduled for the coming months are Andy Beal, a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, talking on ‘From Good to Great Photography’ - Colin Walls, who is coming with the intriguingly titled ‘The Opportunistic Photographer’ - which he says could be called 100 Imperfect Pictures, and husband and wife team Jenny and Tony Byram who will be demonstrating that there is more than one way to shoot a subject. They are calling their presentation ‘Mr. & Mrs. Two People’ – the same place but different images. If any of these topics strike a chord we are always ready to welcome guests as well as new members to The Priory on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Should you be interested in what we are up to, but don’t have the time to join us, bookmark our web site: www.tetburycameraclub.org.uk for more information.

Tetbury Theatre Group
Do you have piles of paperwork? Unfortunately, our September visit to the theatre is past the deadline…
Would you like some help to organise it? Please call me for a chat and further information
…for this edition of the Advertiser, so we are taking this opportunity to remind readers of the aims of the group and to talk about future trips. Started over 25 years ago we visit the theatre each month for a play, concert, musical and sometimes the opera or ballet. The last two are often quite expensive to see a top flight performance, so over the last two years there have been visits to “Vue Cinema” in Stroud for direct live showings from London.

We go to theatres in Bath, Bristol, Malvern, Oxford and Cheltenham, as well as a few others. We travel by coach from the Chipping Car Park on each occasion and there is a yearly administration fee of £8 per household. During the summer we have an outing of a different nature to somewhere of interest, which enables members to mix and mingle more than usual. In January there is the AGM and we do not normally have an outing. On October 13th we’ll be going to The Everyman in Cheltenham for “French without Tears” and although it’s a matinee the coach will leave in the morning to give members time to shop and have lunch. On November 24th it’s off to see “Billy Elliot” at the Bristol Hippodrome, which is also a matinee but for which we’ll be leaving at 2.30 pm. By the time you read this, this the booking deadline with the Theatre Group will be past, but should you wish to book tickets independently and to then travel on the coach with us, this is a possibility. If this appeals, I suggest phoning Lin Ashby on 01666 505029 to check if seats are available. The group welcomes new members and should you wish for further information please phone Mrs Helen Price (Chairman) 01666 503187 or Mrs Lin Ashby 01666 505029. The Recreation Ground in Tetbury has looked extremely colorful over the past few Saturday and Sunday mornings, as football coaching for our young players has again taken off. I have received many pleasing comments of how good it is to see so many children having fun together. The enthusiasm is great to see, from the youngest boys and girls, whose bibs are very nearly down to their ankles, to the

very keen and more knowledgeable older age groups. Welcome to all our new and existing members and to the return of youth football to our thriving football club for the 2016/17 season. We can never forget how fortunate we are in having such a great facility as the Recreation Ground and such a talented and dedicated team of coaches, to ensure the youngsters are out there in the fresh air, developing new skills and making new friends. Never more so than with our “Tiger Tigers” for children aged between

3 and 6 years, offering specific coaching to introduce children into football, while having fun! These sessions, run by our charismatic and passionate coaches, both engage and entertain, whilst developing a child’s motor skills, social skills, selfconfidence and cognitive abilities. It is great to see the benefit of these sessions, as previous recruits are now moving through to U7 and U8 level, demonstrating skills that they never realised they were being taught during their time in the Tiny Tigers. All our teams have their league campaigns underway providing a great opportunity for players to put all their hard work at training into practice in game situations. Upcoming events and news regarding all of our teams can be followed by visiting our website ‘www.tetburytownfc.com’ as well as regular updates through Facebook ‘tetburytownyouthfc’ Ours doors are always open and we welcome boys and girls of all abilities and confidences, as well as those who would like to offer help, in any form, to support our club. Tetbury WI Finn and Nicki Spicer were our speakers in September, they own Riverbarn Gardens in Malmesbury, which covers three and a half acres. Since 2006 they have cleared the site and replanted the area to provide an ecologically sensitive space and their reward is that they are now visited by a truly rich variety of wildlife. We very much enjoyed seeing the video clips of some of their nocturnal visitors. (They were also visited by the WI last year....). Thank you to the Film Society and Kevin in particular for the use of the screen. Five members of the Tetbury in Bloom team came as our guests and we were very happy to present them with a cheque for £750. We appreciate the work they do in Tetbury and are pleased to be of practical help on their “Open Gardens” day.

Our next coffee morning will be on October 24th at the Snooty Fox and on October 10th our speaker will be John Greene, whose topic is Gloucester Film Makers - 7.30 pm at the Dolphins Hall. Chris Gibson, Tetbury WI

One hundred years on… Much has changed since the experimental youth camp on Brownsea Island in 1907 which led to the worldwide development of the Scout and Guide movements. Keith Walker’s talk on the 4th of August brought back memories to many former Scouts in Probus. Having summarised the history of World Jamborees since 1920, Keith described how the Scout Association has moved with the times to retain the interest of young people between 6six and twenty-five of all faiths. New awards, badges and activities covering more adventurous pursuits and modern

skills had been introduced: girls had been admitted to all sections since 1991. Keith had attended the 8th World Jamboree in Canada in 1955 and also the Chelmsford International Jamboree in 2012, which he illustrated with a video. His and his wife’s dedicated service to the Scouts and Guides had helped Eastcombe to become a local stronghold with 250 members involved in nine different sections. It was good to hear that Scouting is thriving, both in Tetbury and worldwide. The remarkable Captain Samuel Cornell Plant (b. 1866) was drawn to our attention on the 18th of August by Michael Gillam. In the early 1890s he had explored and established trade routes in Iran’s three upper rivers, eventually using sternwheeled paddle steamers. Moving to the Far East in 1898 he had then achieved the introduction of commercial steam navigation routes on the hazardous upper Yangste, with its formidable rapids, using side-paddled steamers. Highly regarded and a skilled cartographer, Captain Plant was appointed Chinese Maritime Senior River Inspector. He wrote a shipmasters manual, trained pilots and introduced navigation systems. The mighty so-called Dragon River had been tamed. His memorial was raised by 200ft when the river levels rose during dam construction. Captain Plant and his wife both died in 1920. They had adopted two orphaned

Chinese girls, one of whom died in China in 1966, the other in 2011. Michael closed his fascinating tale of unusual achievements by describing research which had established both had been born into the Chien family. Then it was war! In his comprehensive introduction to two Boer Wars (1880/1881 and 1899/1902) on the 1st of September, David Thorp explained clearly the events leading up to these conflicts. The Boers, descended from early Dutch settlers, had trekked from Cape Colony to the Transvaal in 1836, but in December 1880 ambushed and destroyed a British convoy. This initiated a war for the mastery of South Africa, for which the British were ill-prepared. David described the weapons, uniforms and tactics of both sides, stressing how the ‘shoot and scoot’ methods of the mounted Boer commandos were far more effective than the formal formations of the British. Supporting Empire troops eventually ensured that the British were numerically vastly superior in the second war. Descriptions in this very informative talk of the sieges at Kimberley, Ladysmith and Mafeking, together with the battles of Spion Kop and Colenso, were too detailed to summarise adequately. Suffice it to say that the Boers surrendered in May 1902. Theo Stening, Probus One

Tetbury in Bloom Secret Garden When I asked the Tetbury in Bloom volunteers for their favourite flowerbeds Frances and Ann both responded with the “Anniversary Gardens”. Anniversary Gardens is in Eccles Court, which runs between The Chipping and The Ferns. It was originally part of the grounds of the old Sir Williams Romney school, now the doctor’s surgery.
the lavenders in the rosa regosa beds and encircling the Rowan tree. “I am constantly surprised at how many Tetbury residents are unaware of this garden because it is not on a main thoroughfare but I urge you to visit it through the seasons to capture its varying moods and maybe enjoy a few moments on one of the two wooden seats.” Working with Tetbury in Bloom since 2009 has enriched France’s retirement “giving me wonderful new friends, a twice weekly work-
out and a constant learning opportunity!” At the time of writing, tickets were still available for Race Night on Saturday 29th October - our annual fund raising event. All profits go towards Tetbury in Bloom and Christmas in Tetbury projects. Tickets cost £5 per person and can be obtained from Sue Hirst on 504213. More details can be found on our website www.tetburyinbloom.org. uk or see the advertisement in this month’s Tetbury Advertiser. Do remember to visit Anniversary Gardens! Liz Farnham, Tetbury in Bloom
“A small haven of calm, character and colour” is how Frances describes it. “Just a two- or three-minute walk away from the bustling centre of the town and yet here traffic sounds are left behind and birdsong and peace dominate. Almost like a ‘secret garden,’ it nestles between two majestic Cotswold stone walls and the Coach House.” There are several borders planted with perennials, which give year-round colour, but for Frances the beginning of the year is the most inspirational, with a drift of white snowdrops appearing through the rosa regosa beds providing welcome light and colour after the darkness of winter. These are followed by glorious yellow tete-a-tetes and other daffodils creating a joyful spring greeting. The heucheras provide colour throughout the year, contrasting with the vivid geraniums in the summer. The garden is also fragrant at times with roses growing up the walls, and the pergola and

Christmas in Tetbury In order to raise additional funding for Christmas in Tetbury and Tetbury in Bloom projects, we are holding the ever-popular annual horseracing night on Saturday 29th October. Look out for our advertisement in this issue, for more details. We’ll also be holding a fund raising Wassailing Christmas Lunch at the Hare & Hounds Hotel on Sunday 18th December with entertainment from ‘The Wassailers of Stroud’. All the profits from this event will go towards the town’s Christmas lights. Full details will be in next month’s Tetbury Advertiser so look out for our advert, or ring Sue Hirst now on 504213 to reserve your place!
Dates for the Diary The grand switch-on evening will be on Thursday 1st December this year, preceded by judging of the best dressed shop window displays from 7pm on Monday 28th November. The lantern-lit procession will leave Saint Marys’ church at 5:20pm. There will be carol singing at the Market House in the run up to the switch-on of the Christmas lights at 6pm, followed by an evening of music, entertainment and the usual festive stalls in, under and around the Market Hall. Father Christmas will be available in his Grotto during the evening, ensuring that there will
be something for all members of the family. For a full calendar of the evening’s events, look out for next month’s article. To book your pitch for a stall at the Switch On event, download our application form at www.christmasintetbury.org.uk or contact Kathryn Limoi on kathryn@ christmasintetbury.org.uk The Christmas in Tetbury Committee is delighted that Highgrove Enterprises have agreed, once again, to sponsor new lighting for the town. Priory Inn Blog “Delicious Autumn...” “Golden October...” “the year’s last loveliest smile...” “the second Spring where every leaf is a flower...” We are now ensconced in the inspirational time of year which brings out greater depths in the true poets and drives hordes of visitors to the local leaf displays. Last year’s record-breaking apple crop doesn’t look quite as good this year for the team at Days Cottage. They grow dozens of varieties (some unique to the county, such as Taynton Codlin, Flower of the West
and Underleaves) and are selling apples each week at Stroud market from their unsprayed orchards and delicate grapes from their huge vine. www.dayscottage. co.uk. Rather than compost the lowly little crab apple, our kitchen team this year is making apple butter for the breakfast buffet. This is a highly concentrated apple sauce which is produced by long, slow cooking to caramelize the sugar, turning the apple butter a deep mahogany brown. Barter-at-the-back-door is running at full throttle with baskets of plums, courgettes, runner beans, French beans, redcurrants and figs regularly turning up. Any local gardeners can join our community scheme and bring us their surplus produce in exchange for vouchers which they can spend on meals and drinks here at The Priory Inn. Just bring your fayre in on the day of harvest and it’ll be on the menu by the evening.
Social Responsibility. The entry criteria are satisfied by demonstrating responsible business practices across four areas: local community, environment, people and supply chain. Live music continues through October to a laid-back Sunday night atmosphere: On Sunday the 2nd October, Steve Page plays some of the finest Americana being played in the UK today. The 9th welcomes a great performance from Steve Degutis and he is followed by Elliot Hall and Rapunzel on the 16th. A new musician for us plays on the 23rd – Matt Watkins walks the tightrope between American folk and country, performing original and traditional songs. Teri Bramah rounds out the month on the 30th October. Follow us on Twitter @ThePrioryInn and Instagram to stay informed. Tanya Kelly, The Priory Inn

Unsung Hero I have known Lesley Jablonski for many years and she is a kind, honest, hardworking member of our community. She always has a smile and makes you laugh with her clever wit – and if any organisation needs help with fundraising etcetera, Lesley will always be at the front of the queue, even though she has five children that she has brought up in latter years single-handed, due to her husband’s untimely death. She is well respected and has a style and personality that is unique. Here are just a few of the organisations Lesley is involved with, making them much richer for her dedication, hard work and sense of fun. The Goods Shed Car Boot sales, the Ferns Playgroup, Community Champion (Tesco Fundraiser,) Kingsley
House Nursing Home weekly, the Shipton Moyne Thursday Club, the Dolphins Dramatic Society, Tetbury Community Choir, the Tetbury weekly Scrabble Clubs and Tetbury Art Society. I would like to nominate Lesley Jablonski as “Unsung Hero” for October, as she’s undoubtedly a member of the Tetbury Community who makes a real difference.

Name and Address withheld. Ed: I’m delighted to accept this nomination for the tireless Lesley – and if she’s kind enough to contact me in the near future I shall ensure she receives her voucher for a meal for two, generously provided by the Priory Inn.

This year’s Tetbury Classic Car Show was the largest and most successful to date,
and exhibits. Money is still coming in, and we need to take out our costs, but we are hopeful that gross takings might reach five figures. Wonderful! Our main charity is “Allsorts”, who do outstanding work with local children with learning and physical difficulties. We were delighted to have Allsorts with us this year, and we hope you took the chance to speak to them on the day.
both in terms of the money raised for our charities and in the variety of vehicles
The show could not have happened without the support of the car show committee and our loyal band of supporters, notably Tetbury Lions who ably marshalled the event, the PTFA of Sir William Romney School, Jesse Smiths, and the teachers, parents and governors from Avening School.
Tetbury Classic Car Show Advertiser as we distribute the proceeds and some wonderful photos of both classic cars and charity recipients. If you brought your classic car or bike along thank you; you put on a wonderful display and we look forward to seeing you next year! Last but not least, thank you for the support of the residents in and around Lowfield Road. John Bevan Tetbury Classic Car Show Committee
We are very grateful for their support, without which the show could not run. We are lucky enough to have the use of the school site at SWR and we thank the staff and caretaker at SWR for hosting us. 1130509 Springfields1:Layout 1

The Feoffees and the Thirteen

PRINGFIELD
As the leaves on the trees change colour, we say goodbye to the long days and the nights start to draw in. This autumn we have had a successful Heritage Open Day at The Market Hall, despite the rainy weather, and by the time you read this we will have held the annual Beating of the Bounds, followed by the presentation of The Feoffees accounts in The Market Hall on 1st October. This is a traditional morning where we walk the boundaries of Tetbury, beating the boundary stones with a stick. A more modern version of this is the craze “Pokemon Go” and we are very pleased that our ‘late’ Feoffee Brian Smith’s Memorial Garden has been chosen as a “Pokemon Stop” – a wonderful tribute. It is great to see that we are joining this 21st Century craze. If you would like to know more about us and the type of grants and support we make available, please do not hesitate to contact us. Educational or Training Grants, as well as discretionary Grants to the town’s clubs and societies are available by application to the Feoffees.

We have had an unusually busy summer in Avening. We provided teas for the village fete back in June and during July and August we have had several local events to cater for. We hosted the Gloucestershire Federation August walk.
Fortunately, we had good weather for the occasion – not too hot! We arranged walks of 2, 4 and 6 miles. Coffee was served on arrival and we provided a ham ploughman’s lunch on the walkers’ return. It is good to meet up with other members from around the County at these events. We had an enjoyable friendly skittles match in June and are hoping to arrange other
Avening WI ‘friendlies’ during the autumn. Meanwhile we are looking forward to taking part in the annual County knockout skittles competition. Our trip to Dyffryn Gardens near Cardiff in July proved very popular. With a full coach we were able to refund some of the fare just enough for an ice cream on a lovely summer’s day! We had an enjoyable group meeting at the Dolphin Hall with Tetbury and Kemble W.I.’s in June. Unfortunately, we were unable to take part in the main group competition as so many of our number were on holiday.

A garden party took place in July to say goodbye to our long serving member Mrs Beryl Milsom. We invited many of her friends made over the years. She had been a member of our W.I. as president, treasurer, catering manager and committee member. We shall certainly miss her but wish her every happiness in her new home in Cirencester. Pat Chase attended our July and September meetings. Once again we were pleased to give her lots of donations for her Vine Project in South Africa including little dresses for the girls made by the members, well mostly one member, Jean Chatelaine. Well done Jean! Now we have to make lots of plans for the Autumn. We are catering for a coach party of old friends in Cherington in late September. Also we have a walk arranged to Haresfield Beacon. A small group is attending the Autumn Gloucestershire Federation meeting in Cheltenham. Instead of a Christmas shopping trip our members agreed that we should go to Windsor Castle in October to see the Queen’s wardrobe exhibition. Our October speaker is a staff member from Waitrose talking about fish, fruit and vegetables. Shirley Hand, Avening WI

Puddle Ducks Well what a busy start to the new year it has been at Puddle Ducks! The children have all settled in extremely well and it is lovely to see how much our returning children are enjoying helping us to show the newcomers everything they know.
making the most of it in our fully enclosed garden every day where they have been exploring, bouncing, climbing, role-playing, gardening and ‘cooking’ in the mud kitchen! Huge thanks must go to all the parents of our leavers last July who presented us with some lovely big bucket scales, a drying rack and coat/welly rail. All items were very much appreciated and have been wellused already. Thank you.
Now, we British are not always good at ‘blowing our own trumpets’ but we are going to give it a bit of a go here! We were visited by Ofsted just 3 days into the new term and we are proud and pleased to say that we received a ‘Good’ rating in every area of inspection. We thought we would share some of the Inspector’s findings here:

Many thanks to the parents who took the time to speak to the Inspector on the day. We started the term with the topic ‘All about Me’ and all the children have contributed towards our fantastic display of selfportraits. We have talked about how we are all the same, but also different and looked in the mirror to see what colour hair and eyes we have. The early September weather has been very kind to us and we have been

Hard at Work? Here we are – caught on Candid Camera! Three men, looking down a hole! Well, the hole was for a waymark post, to clarify the route of the footpath – and we are pictured in a field at Ryeford, close to the Stroudwater Canal and River Frome. Now,
it’s a nice field – but, up to the 1960’s, it was an industrial area. We are into ash in this hole, maybe from the formation of the railway siding into the mills… Other work this month included repairing the steps and handrail on a steep path in Bowcott Wood, above Dursley. At Woodchester, in the valley below the church, we renewed the footbridge over the stream. At Avening, we repaired a stile and did some clearance, repaired two gates on the paths from the churchyard and also cleared ivy from the wall by the gates, which revealed some nice dressed stone.
High stone wall The National Trust asked us to repair a fallen length of the roadside boundary wall to Newark Park. This was over six feet high, so since I’m the tallest of the group I was volunteered to work on the top three

Later on today, I’m going along to the Market Place to open the modernized Post Office. As I said last month it’s pleasing to learn of the decision to invest in a new-look post office which will offer more services for longer hours which shows confidence in Tetbury for the future. The Town Council have joined in a Tesco Community Support scheme and have been chosen as one of the three finalists to take part in a public vote of shoppers to receive funding for a community facility in the town. The public vote entails shoppers voting for one of three projects, the town council’s project is to revitalize the picnic area in the Rail Lands and I would ask that you consider voting for this so that we can improve another town facility. Voting is from the 26th of September until the 9th of October, so it’s well under way. The winning project will receive £12 thousand pounds, the second £10 thousand and the third £8 thousand.

Smiles aims to make life easier for those who find getting out and about difficult or for those who simply need extra support. It caters for the elderly, children, people with disabilities or anyone who does not drive and would like to get out. A community resource supported by the whole community, it can be used by anybody to pre-book a journey. When used like a pre-booked taxi the commercial rate charged helps to subsidise a journey for someone who cannot access transport in any other way. We are very competitive most recently supported by a local Lion going on holiday, who needed taxi to Kemble Station. I hope he would recommend us! The service is different to “a taxi serviceâ€? because we offer support and assistance and a friendly face to our regular customers. One of our most recent customers moved into one of the flats in Lamb Court, opposite the Audi garage, from an area that had regular bus services to the facilities she needed such as the bank and the pharmacy. Although Tetbury has these facilities, they are a long way to walk to, and the bank has steps making it inaccessible without support. The Smiles car is distinctive and is easily accessed. It can accommodate a wheelchair, walker or boot-friendly scooter, pram and luggage. it is a door-to-door service - we collect - and the journey is decided by the individual. It can be one stop or to multiple stops, such as to the hairdresser and the doctors, and then the supermarket. All drivers are DBS checked, first aid trained, trained in Dementia awareness and safeguarding – and in personal manual handling to help customers in and out of the vehicle or with their wheelchair. With our person-centred friendly approach and local knowledge, we hope to make a real difference in Tetbury to the loneliness and isolation some people feel. Wacky Races 2017 The Wacky Races, in just five years, have become a “must see” event,
West, all of which boosted numbers - and it is crowd control issues that must now be addressed for safety reasons. Because attendance is free, there is no official record of numbers attending, but a rough estimate seems to be about 3,000 people attended this year and this is probably our capacity limit.
with competitors and visitors coming from great distances and from all points of the compass. It would appear that our event is one of only twenty-three annual downhill racing events in the UK, which of course adds to its appeal.
However, the situation must change, for if we have little ability to limit spectator numbers, we will be unable to address some serious potential crowd control issues for 2017 and beyond, especially since we have figures to suggest that attendance numbers are likely to grow.
Tetbury Wacky Races 2016 were featured in The Daily Mail, The Times, Cotswold Life, local “What’s On” guides and on BBC Points
We think so, because the Wacky Races web site has had over 82,000 hits since the middle of February from 60 countries – and it is still
generating over 1,200 hits a week. Those statistics alone are a little alarming, given the size of Tetbury and the need for the safe movement of the public at all times between the Chipping car park and Millennium Green, on what is a very narrow pavement. This May the support from the town was fantastic, with a wide range of business sponsors providing banners on the course, raffle prizes and full page adverts in the programme, all of which boosted what has become a major fundraising event for Tetbury Lions. It is difficult to tell exactly how much money was raised, but Tetbury Lions will probably net about £3,500 from the event – although when we take into account the car parking revenue from the two sites which generated over £4,000 - and the vastly increased takings in the town, particularly for the pubs, hotels and cafes, we have without doubt generated a major event. Of course, success comes at a price and Wacky Races is no exception. The increased visitor numbers this year did indeed create a number of congestion points and the situation, critical at times, was really eased only by a heavy downpour of rain in the early afternoon.

Sir William Romney’s School GCSE results place SWR among UK’s top achieving schools! This year’s GCSE results at Sir William Romney’s School have placed SWR amongst the highest achieving schools throughout the UK for the second year in a row. The “Progress 8” figure is 0.48, which
means that on average students at SWR achieved a half grade higher in each of their GCSE’s than other students nationally. This is an outstanding achievement and shows further improvement from 2015 where the Progress 8 figure was 0.35. The 5+ A*to C pass rate was 63%. While progress of all students is excellent a number have achieved some outstanding results with Nielsan Abbot-Bohl , Annabel Griffin and Angus Greig achieving a clean sweep of A* and A grades. Many congratulations to them.
Headteacher Jon Bell said he was delighted with the results which, in terms of progress and achievement, were the best that the school had ever had. He commented: “We are elated with our 2016 GCSE results with students’ achievement being even higher than our previous success in 2015. Every student achieved at least half a grade higher than other students nationally. “Through aspiration and resilience our students have achieved outstanding outcomes that fully prepare them for the next step of their education at local sixth forms, colleges and apprenticeships.”

“However, what really attracted me to SWR was the commitment of all staff to develop the whole student, not only academically but by providing a variety of enrichment opportunities that support our students to become independent and resilient life-long learners.” The school strongly promotes participation in extracurricular activities, with high student participation in sports, creative and drama clubs. Sir William Romney’s School is able to understand each individual and recognises that each student is unique. This aspirational and personalised approach allows all students to feel safe and able to participate in school life in a supportive environment that is conducive to effective academic and personal development.
New SWR headteacher Jon Bell is proud of students’ outstanding progress
“We are very proud of our comprehensive status, high quality teaching and learning, and actively encourage prospective parents to see the school on a typical day,” added Mr Bell. “I would be delighted to personally take parents and students on a guided tour of the school and answer any questions they you may have.”
Excellent progress for students, vibrant lessons that challenge all pupils to realise their full potential and access to a variety of sporting, musical and creative extracurricular activities. This encapsulates the typical day of a student at Sir William Romney’s School in Tetbury.
There are also other opportunities to experience the unique culture, vibrancy and inclusive ethos of SWR at our Open Evening to be held on Thursday 29th September, and Open Mornings on Wednesday 28th September and Monday 3rd October.
Jon Bell is excited to be the new Headteacher and is proud of the school’s firm commitment to challenge and inspire students to achieve more than they believe possible. This is proven by the excellent examination results over the last three years.
If you would like to meet the Headteacher, Jon Bell, please contact the main office on 01666 502378 or email admin@ swr.gloucs.sch.uk.
Students are making exceptional progress and in 2016 they achieved at least half a grade higher than expected, placing SWR amongst the highest achieving schools for the second year in a row. With exceptional GCSE grades, 38.2% of which were A*-B, students are fully prepared to make mature and well informed choices about their future pathways in local colleges, sixth forms and apprenticeships. “Our proven track record in securing outstanding progress, supported by our recent OFSTED ‘good’ judgement in all aspects, speaks for itself,” commented Mr Bell.

convenient several years since, in the consequence of the loss of some pigs by the vicar of the parish, to breathe in the air of liberty in America. The reasons for his absence having gradually diminished, he wrote to his father for £5 to enable him to accomplish his voyage to England. The prisoner, [Lewin Clifford.] aware of the circumstance, conceived and executed a scheme to defraud his grandfather of the £5 by forging two letters – the second in the name of William Smart, desiring his father to remit an order on the Manchester post-office for £5, which he purloined.
Now here is another of the ever popular Cold Cases.
Policeman Indicted for Forgery, 1845 In the Oxford Circuit, Gloucester, on April 8th before Mr Baron Platt, Lewin Clifford, aged 21, a policeman of the Gloucestershire constabulary, was indicted for having forged a receipt for money purporting to be the receipt of William Smart, with intent to defraud Moses Smart. It appeared in the evidence of this singular and interesting case, that the prisoner was the grandson of Moses Smart, the surveyor of highways, living at Tetbury, whose son William who had found it
On the 30th of November William Smart really arrived at Liverpool, and immediately proceeded to his father’s house at Tetbury, in this county. The prisoner, in ignorance of his arrival, sent a forged letter of thanks from the son to the old gentleman, and which letter was delivered to the father after the return of his son. The contents of this letter naturally produced an inquiry as to the post-office order, and on its being discovered that William Smart had never heard of the transaction, an investigation took place. On the 11th December the prisoner was arrested in Cheltenham [and] on his apprehension, the prisoner stated to the police-officer, who took him into custody, that he had received a letter from his uncle, William Smart, who was at Bristol, directing him to enclose a letter to Moses Smart, applying for the £5, and that he acted only in pursuance of his uncle’s instructions. This statement was sought to be supported by the production of a letter, bearing a Bristol stamp, of August 30, 1844, which stamp proved also to be forged. It was also made apparent that at the period of that date William Smart was not in a position to correspond with the prisoner. After a trial which occupied nine hours, the prisoner was convicted and sentenced to seven years’ transportation. Source: The Times April 10th 1845

Vanity Fair – by William Makepeace Thackeray Thackeray uses his book as a social commentary, observing the manners, prejudices, aspirations and absurdities of society in the early 1800’s (or Vanity Fair as he calls the social whirl). He uses the lives of two young women, just leaving school and with their lives ahead of them as a platform to illustrate this.
Ships in Port Phillip Bay: courtesy State Library Victoria
As was the case for the majority of women in those times, their futures would lie in the hands of the husband they chose, so Becky Sharp, a penniless orphan, sets her cap at Rawdon Crawley, second son of a baronet and favourite nephew of a rich spinster. For Amelia Sedley on the other hand, the sweet-natured daughter of a rich
Further research shows that Clifford was one of 289 convicts transported on the “Thomas Arbuthnot” on 6th January 1847 destined for Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania,) but the convicts were disembarked at Port Phillip, Victoria (near Melbourne) - not Van Diemen’s Land. Chelworth Bookworms city dealer, her only wish is to marry her childhood sweetheart, George Osbourne. Thackeray observes that society values money and position ahead of intelligence and good character. Indeed, it appears that everyone is striving to improve their prospects and those of their children and although Becky and Amelia might be extreme cases, most people would be able to see something of themselves in the girls and their families. There is, however, a beacon of goodness and honour in the form of William Dobbie, George Osbourne’s trusted friend who worships Amelia from the sidelines – loyal and selfless at all times. Thackeray often comments directly to the reader in a similar way to an aside to the audience at a play or on TV. This gives one the impression of being a direct observer, a fly on the wall in the girls’ lives. Although the author’s opinions and moralising can at times be a distraction, the story has moments of both high drama and deep emotion. The Battle of Waterloo and its repercussions is one of the key episodes in the lives of both women – advancing one whilst bringing the other down. Neither of the two main characters is either wholly good or irredeemably bad, indeed, in a different age Becky Sharp might be lauded as an example of how to make the best of yourself and succeed in life. Unfortunately, in the seventeenth century the two great themes of money and love conspire against her. On the other hand, it is those universal themes, still true today, that mean that Vanity Fair remains a classic.

Tetbury Nursery Playgroup Everyone has come back much refreshed from their summer break and all children have settled in well.
ones that parents may not want to try at home! The session always ends with a story or with song time. As a playgroup we continue to fundraise for our double glazing and this year we are going to continue to involve the children
starting with our sponsored obstacle course on the 5th of October. The preschool children will be sponsored to do laps of an obstacle and then after there will be cakes on sale made by the staff. Tetbury Nursery Playgroup
After the summer holidays there was much excitement among the children and staff, due to all the changes in the garden. A team from Tesco’s spent three weeks volunteering their time to improve and add to our garden area. The team repaired our undercover area, painted sheds, play house and benches; they made us a tyre minion planter and a sunken sand pit, refreshed our hanging baskets and made the children a mud kitchen. The children have loved exploring the new areas, especially the mud kitchen and sunken sand pit. They are enjoying pretending to cook outside using the natural resources available to them, they can even access water through the rain water butt that was also donated to us by Tesco. As a playgroup we would like to give a massive thanks to all the Tesco staff who gave up their time to make such a difference to our garden.

This term in crèche and playgroup we start to look at Autumn - the food that is available and the changes to the trees and garden. Autumn always lends itself to lots of lovely craft activities. The children have been experiencing lots of sensory activities. Whilst these activities are always popular all-year-round, they are great for helping to settle the newer, younger children. The “Play and Stay” group has been moved to Tuesday mornings 9.15 - 11.15 am, and is going really well. Parents are really enjoying exploring the activities that are provided by Laura, especially the messy

By Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales P & S Timbrell Decorators Painters and Decorators
With the arrival of September, the nights are drawing in noticeably and we move indoors again. But, looking back, the weather permitted us to sketch and paint outdoors on three of the four Monday afternoons in August – a better success rate than we achieved in 2015. Views of Beverstone castle, the River Avon at Malmesbury and Tetbury from the hospital grounds were all tackled. In August we also held a Summer Social at Shipton Moyne Village Hall with members each bringing some contribution for the buffet. It was arranged by Barry Barnes with help from Christina Lippiatt and Barry’s wife Carol.

There was a sale of art books and materials, a quiz, a raffle and time to just socialise. And we mustn’t forget the August Exhibition held in the Market Hall over the bank holiday weekend arranged by Gill Ashley and Jenny Riley. All of our display boards were needed to hang the work submitted and eighteen or nineteen pictures were sold. Then, on the evening of Wednesday 7th September, we started our autumn programme with a demonstration of watercolour portraits given by Catherine Beale in St. Michael’s Hall. Catherine was born on the edge of Salisbury Plain and was drawing from an early age. Moving to Singapore shortly after marrying, she continued drawing and painting. There were problems working in the Far East e.g. cockroaches tended to eat anything containing oil. Back in the UK, she felt the need to get some formal training and took life drawing classes for 2 or 3 years. Catherine will complete a portrait over about a month. Half the time goes into planning – sketching and getting to know the subject. Photography is useful, particularly with children. We were given a lot of technical information about materials and techniques e.g. painting eyes. Looking forward, the meeting at 7:30 pm in St Michael’s Hall on Wednesday 12th October will feature ‘Landscapes’, a demonstration by Steve Hall in water colour. Information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666503926. You will find that we are a friendly group welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached. Michael Kingham, Tetbury Art Society

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Malmesbury Bridge Club is looking for new members. If you play Rubber Bridge socially and would like to try to play Duplicate but feel that joining a bridge club is a bit daunting, then this may be the answer! The Club is planning to run assisted play evenings on the second and third Thursdays during October and November. These sessions would run at the same time as the normal club evenings and would use basic ACOL but would be at a less pressured pace. There would be one or two club members there to explain how duplicate works and to give advice, if wanted, on play, scoring and tactics. The hope would be that once people had tried it a few times they would move on to play in the main club sessions, although there would be no pressure to do that.
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor
I would like to nominate a couple as “Unsung Heroes” except that I don’t know their names!
A big “Thank You!” from The Malthouse Renovation Committee to all those who bought raffle tickets during the summer.
I punctured my car tyre in Doughton on Saturday evening, it was the one night my phone was out of battery and I was ready for a long walk home to Tetbury, in the dark – but they kindly stopped and drove me home. All I know is that they live in Springfields.
We also thank all those who donated prizes, including Calcot Manor, Vinotopia, Twig, Skeins, The Tetbury Taylor, Getty Bang Bang, Mayners Ali and Jo - and James Gouriet.
I’m so grateful to them – perhaps you could thank them for me through your letters page? Kind regards, Pauline Whittaker Ed: I’m delighted to be able to print this, Pauline. Our “Unsung Heros” are always people who’ve provided community service over a long period – but smaller acts of generosity and public spirit like this also deserve our collective thanks.
We are glad to announce that most of the winners came from Tetbury, a list of these can be obtained from myself – reach me via the Tetbury Advertiser. Over £5,000 has now been raised for the Malthouse Renovation due to the hard work of the Committee and through local generosity. This Grade II listed building is a valuable asset to Tetbury and deserves continued support. Juliet Fenton
The first session will be on Thursday October 13 at 7pm at Athelstan House in Malmesbury where tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. If you think you might be interested, or indeed would like to play at normal sessions, please email the membership secretary Jim Edwards at jimedwards2011@hotmail.co.uk Carol Paton, Secretary, MBC Dear Editor, New caretaker at SWR Sir William Romney’s School would like to extend a warm welcome to its new caretaker Arron Townsend. Arron is looking forward to building a close relationship with local suppliers and contractors. Ed: I had the pleasure of dealing with Arron for Classic Car Show arrangements and he seems a thoroughly pleasant young man and a very effective caretaker; I think he’ll be an asset to you. 380510 AGW Howell:Layout 1

News from St Marys’ Church “Where words fail, music speaks.” This tribute to the power of music comes from the famous wordsmith, Hans Christian Andersen himself. And he’s right, isn’t he? Music can express things we struggle to put into words, and can transport us to another world. So I hope you will join us for the variety of musical events we are hosting this month. It begins with the delights of The Tetbury Music Festival (Thursday 29th September - Sunday 2nd October). Highlights include a free concert on Saturday morning at 11am to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Alison Parkhouse Organ Scholarship. We are very proud of this local institution, which has encouraged and supported young organists for a quarter of a century. Four scholars will play - Adam Langston, Jonathan Adkins, Joseph Middleton and Charlotte Corderoy, and the concert ends with musical fireworks played by the gifted organist and teacher, Robin Baggs. The next day, we’ll be pulling out all the stops at our Festival Eucharist Service at 10.30am on Sunday 2nd October.
change key again and turn to remembrance with our All Souls’ Services on Sunday 30th October. This is an opportunity to give thanks for the lives of all those we have loved and lost. In the evening, we have a quiet and reflective service at 6pm which includes reading the names of all those we are remembering, and lighting candles in their memory.
They hang up stars for the people they are remembering, with prayers to say thank you for their life and asking God to care for them. Please call me if you would like more information, and do bring any children in your family who might find this comforting and helpful. I look forward to sharing all of this with you.

After an unintentionally protracted summer break, it was nice to get back to finding somewhere new to eat out. Having tried recently (and failed) to have lunch at The Cat and Custard Pot, we decided after a hard day’s work to visit for an evening meal instead. Several aspects of The Cat and Custard have an untouched feel, especially the carpet, which appears to be the same one we saw when we first visited nearly twenty years ago. But that said, the menu offers an interesting mixture of classic pub favourites and more ‘up to date’ specials. To start, Flossy chose the breaded camembert wedges with sweet chilli sauce and I had 250208 JS Painters & Decorators crab, avocado and grapefruit salad. On
reading, the grapefruit sounded an odd and potentially overpowering accompaniment, but when it arrived, the few small pieces of pink grapefruit were actually surprisingly complimentary. The presentation of both was very good, too. To follow, Flossy had the house chicken burger, which was a nice piece of breast with both bacon and cheese toppings, accompanied by fries and salad – and she was more than happy with her wellcooked hearty fare. For me, the intriguing sounding ‘Black Beast’ special was a must try: a thin-ish ribeye steak rolled in black pepper and flambéed in brandy. The steak was bigger than I was expecting and literally as black as an undertaker’s hat, and although it was thinner than your average steak, it was perfectly cooked. The pepper didn’t overpower meat 22/2/08 22:20 the Page 1 and the brandy

Eating Out provided well-judged subtle hints of extra flavour. It was served with thick cut chips and if I were to quibble about anything it would be that there was nothing else on the plate e.g. a salad garnish, or a grilled tomato or mushroom – you know the kind of thing. However, the ‘omission’ certainly didn’t spoil what was an enjoyable plate of food. Unusually for us, we both decided to take on the challenge of a dessert each, too. Flossy’s home-made lemon tart with raspberry sorbet looked a picture and tasted good, though the thin pastry had lost a little of its crispiness (presumably from having been kept in the fridge). My choice was the Baileys and white chocolate cheesecake with crème anglais, which was delicious. Very smooth, with just enough richness from the chocolate and a lovely So, not the most salubrious setting, maybe, but lots of nice outdoor space and especially good if you fancy a good walk with a tasty, rewarding lunch at the end. Seems to me it’s a good thing some locals kept the place from closing down a few years back, because I wonder where else you could have a three course meal for two, with a large sauvignon blanc and a couple of pints for just under sixty quid? Well worth a visit or two, in our opinion! Fill

History of Tetbury Society George Cattermole spoke to the HOTS meeting on 1st September about two naval battles in the early days of WW1. Not a subject with which many of the audience would be especially conversant even though much attention that has been given to WW1 by the media in the last two years. The Battle of Coronel (1st November 1914) was off the coast of Chile and it resulted in a defeat for the Royal Navy. That defeat was avenged on 8th December 1914 at the Battle of the Falkland Islands.
essence the ships of the British West Indies Squadron at Coronel were old and therefore slow and out-gunned. Their commander, Rear Admiral Cradock who lost his life in the battle, was criticised by the Admiralty but, given the methods of communication at that time, he may not have received all signals. In opposition was the German Imperial East Asiatic Squadron commanded by Admiral von Spee who had five modern vessels including the two cruisers, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. (My memory says that in WW2 two ships bearing those names sneaked northwards one foggy morning through the Straits of Dover causing the Royal Navy much embarrassment.)
George, who lives in Malmesbury, had researched the subject thoroughly and he gave us a detailed account of the battles. In
To some extent, the two navies seem to have encountered one another by chance and it was not a long battle. Two British
ships were sunk- the HMS Monmouth and Cradock’s flagship, HMS Good Hope. And that is where the connection with Tetbury is made, because Electrical Artificer Horace William Harmer lost his life when the Good Hope went down. The photo is of the ship and Admiral Cradock. His name is incised on the War Memorial in St. Saviour’s churchyard. The German ships were ordered to return to Germany but first they needed to take on more coal at Valparaiso. They had used about half their ammunition but this they were unable to replenish. The Germans sailed around Cape Horn and then in the direction of the Falkland Islands. The Admiralty had ordered two modern battlecruisers, HMS Inflexible and HMS Invincible that had Vice Admiral Sturdee aboard, to sail for the Falklands. There they met the remnants of the West Indies Squadron with Rear Admiral Stoddart aboard HMS Carnarvon. Battle was joined on 8th December and, with the new ships and increased fire power, the Navy were able to turn the tables and avenge the defeat the previous month. The outcome of a fierce battle was that the Germans lost seven ships including the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the only overseas German naval formation ceased to exist. Remember, remember the 5th of November... are planned. They will be much calmer if you are there with them.
Perhaps you aren’t even thinking about it yet, but the firework and party season is fast approaching and can be a very stressful time for pets and their owners. Taking a little bit of time now to think about how you can reduce the anxiety often shown by pets during the firework season will ensure you all have a much more enjoyable and comfortable Bonfire Night. What can you do to help your pet? If you know that your pet becomes anxious during firework displays then it is best to keep them inside the house in the evenings for a few days before and after an advertised display – your neighbours may be planning a smaller event on a different day to the main one in your area. Some pets are driven away from their home by sudden loud bangs and flashing lights, only to become lost. It’s wise to remove that risk by keeping them inside where you know they will be safe. With your pet inside, draw the curtains to muffle outside noise and flashing of lights and put the television/radio on to mask the sound of any fireworks. Keep the lights on and continue as you would on a normal day. Reward calm behaviour in your pet and ignore fearful behaviour. Rewards can be food, treats or cuddles but try to resist the urge to comfort your pet if they show signs of anxiety – this will only reinforce that type of behaviour.
However, for phobic pets there are also medicines and techniques that can help them: • The use of calming pheromones e.g. Adaptil in dogs and Feliway in cats can help to keep animals relaxed in the home. Spray your pet’s bedding, crate or safe place and allow 15 minutes before allowing your pet access to the area. Use of these products should start at least 48 hours earlier than when any fireworks are likely to start. • Nutraceuticals (food supplements) such as Zylkene and Kalm-Aid can also be given to help pets feel more settled; these need to be given daily over a period of time. • Noise phobia CDs can be used to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a period of time in the run up to Fireworks Night. • If the above options haven’t worked, and for particularly nervous pets, we can use anxiety-relieving sedative medicines to help them through the worst of it. In April this year, microchipping dogs became a legal requirement. We highly recommend ensuring your cat or dog is microchipped so that if they do manage to escape or flee, you can be reunited with them much more quickly. For more information or if you have any concerns, speak to your local veterinary practice where your pet can be examined and further options can be discussed.
Try to walk your dogs earlier in the day to minimise contact with any sudden noises. Make a den for your pet in a place that he/she normally visits when scared. Cats prefer a position of height, so a comfortable bed on top of a cupboard can make them feel safer. Try not to leave your pets on their own when fireworks

St Mary’s CE VA Primary School It has been an exciting first few weeks at St. Mary’s Primary School… …and the school feels buzzing and vibrant at the start of the year. Reception and Key Stage 1 children have been dressing up as farmers and learning all about life on the farm - and I have been watching children retelling the stories of The Little Red Hen and Farmer Duck. Years 3 and 4 are learning all about the Ancient Egyptians in their topic ‘Pharoah Nuff ’ and they are off to see the Egyptian Mummies at the Bristol Museum. Year 5 and 6 children have been doing some scary stories based on Beowolf, which they have been studying as part of their English curriculum. Our Year 6 children went on a week’s residential outdoor education course at Morfa Bay in Wales in September where they participated in abseiling, archery, coastal activities and an assault course amongst other things. They had a fabulous time and came back exhausted. It is a great opportunity for the teachers and the children to bond at the start of a year - and the teachers really get to know the kids by the end of the week! Forest Schools is being run by Mr Knight every Friday and the children have been having
wonderful time learning together in the sunshine and fresh air. All of our sixty reception children have settled happily into school and I have really enjoyed meeting them and watching them at play. For the first week they were attending school in the mornings only and then in week two they stayed for lunch. We were a little worried about how they would cope with lining up, choosing their lunch and then (the trickiest bit) walking to their places carrying a tray without dropping the food on the floor – but goodness me they were all amazing! They have been so
well supported by a team of brilliant staff – the teachers, teaching assistants, lunch time supervisors and support staff who have worked together to ensure that our youngest children are happy in school. We are holding an Open Morning on October 12th at St. Mary’s School so if you are interested in a place for your child in September 2017 do come along and meet our staff and children and have a look around the school. We look forward to welcoming you! Jo Woolley, Head Teacher

It is always good to have feedback from users of the Food Bank… …and I quote from a letter sent in by a client after receiving food from us for the first time: “Thank you so much for today. I just can’t get over the amount of food I was allowed. We had pudding after our salad today and we are excited to have biscuits in the cupboard. You were so kind, welcoming and helpful. I nearly cried when I saw it all as I was so touched.” The Food Bank, which operates from St Mary’s Day Centre on Tuesday mornings, has been particularly busy during the school summer holidays - 51 mouths were fed at just one session in August! One reason for the increase was families
having to provide a main meal for children who would normally be fed at school. Having to do so puts an additional strain on some already tightly stretched budgets. Another reason was additional publicity throughout the town undertaken at the Summer Show and in the Bean Trail. For the latter we are indebted to the twentythree businesses throughout Tetbury who hid cans of beans in their window displays and to Eagle Plant, who generously funded the publicity. In case you are still wondering - a basket of food for a single person weighs 10.2kg and has a value of £27, and the words on the bean cans were ‘Love people stop hunger’. In Cirencester in the six months from April to the end of August 2015, 49 Tetbury clients were helped. Having the facility in Tetbury has enabled 244 Tetbury people to be helped in the same period this year -
Tetbury Food Bank so there is a proven need for the existence of the Food Bank in Tetbury and we are thankful to the volunteers from all our churches who run the facility. Anyone who wishes to donate food can leave it at the back of any of the Tetbury churches and sometimes there is a trolley for this purpose at Tesco. Donated food must be in date. Everything is acceptable (including toiletry items) and especially at this time tinned fish and meat and pasta sauces. Those in need of food can obtain a voucher from the Surgery, Community Health Professionals, The Pod, The Churches, The Council Offices or from the Food Bank itself where you will find a warm welcome and a cup of tea. Leighterton School The first term of our new school year at Leighterton is well under way… …and our children have settled extremely well into their new classes. This year we have selected new names for our classes, which have all been named after the woods and thickets around Leighterton. Our youngest, Foundation Stage children are in Apsemore Class with Miss Bence. Ms Hart teaches our Year One and Two children in Bowldown Class. Mrs Walker and Mrs Robinson are the teachers for our Year Three and Four children in Haymead Class and our oldest Year Five and Six children are with Mrs Laver in Ridge Class. We are extremely excited to be starting the year as a ‘Good’ school after our Ofsted inspection in the summer, where it was recognised that at Leighterton: • Pupils achieve well and make good progress from their starting points in reading, writing and mathematics. •
Teaching is good.
• Pupils’ behaviour in and around the school is good. They demonstrate high levels of respect and are extremely considerate of each other’s needs. •
Leadership of the early years is good.
Children are well supported, which enables them to make good progress. • Pupils develop a strong understanding and appreciation of British values through well planned activities that relate to current events in the news. • Improvements in curriculum design is inspiring and motivating pupils to learn well. It is complemented by an extensive range of enrichment activities to which all pupils have access. • Pupils are well cared for and thrive as a result of the support and guidance staff provide. •
Governance is strong.
Our new children in Apsemore Class have quickly become familiar with school routines and are enjoying their theme about ‘Magical Me’. The class topics are well under way. Bowldown are looking at toys – that children play with now and those from the past that their parents and grandparents would have played with and comparing them in their project about ‘Toy Box Tales’.
Haymead’s topic is history based and the children will be doing plenty of outside learning about the period in time from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. They are going to be archaeologists and dig around Leighterton which will link to their science work on rocks and fossils. They will find out about why hillforts developed as popular places to live during the Iron Age and about copper mining during the Bronze Age. The topic for Ridge Class is ‘Journey to the Rainforest’ and they are using the book ‘Journey to the River Sea’ to explore Maia’s journey to live in the rainforest. One of the highlights of the topic will be when some of the animals from the rainforest come to visit us in school. The children will be able to make comparisons between environments and look at adaptations of both plants and animals have had to make. If you would like to come a have a look around our school, please contact Mrs Davey in the school office on (01666) 890273 or through our website – www. leighterton.com to book a tour. Dolphins Dramatic Society Pantomime is a marvellous and wonderful (if a little eccentric!) British institution. “Oh yes, it is!”
women! Now the Dame is one of the most treasured roles a ‘larger than life’ character who engages with the audience drawing them in to this make believe world and all the magic that is pantomime. The Dame in The Dolphins production of Jack and the Beanstalk is very flamboyant - as are her outfits. Want to know who it is? I’ll give you a clue; he hasn’t been a Dame for at least four years. He is funny and will
definitely get you all involved, so come along enjoy the fun and see who it is. The show runs from Thursday 24th November to Saturday 26thNovember (two performances) and of course there is, as always, the special night for all the older people of Tetbury on Wednesday 23rd November, organised by Tetbury Lions. Terri White, Dolphins Dramatic Society
So how did this curious British institution come about? Pantomime literally means ‘all kinds’ of ‘mime.’ (panto-mime). It is generally acknowledged that British pantomime is modelled on the early masques of the Elizabethan and Stuart days. In the 14th century the early masques were musical, mime or spoken dramas, usually performed in grand houses although by the 17th century they were really no more than an excuse for a theme party. The timing of the British pantomime at Christmas and the role reversal of the lead characters (the principal boy being played by a girl and the Dame by a man) may have also evolved from the Tudor ‘Feast of Fools’ presided over by the Lord of Misrule. The Lord of Misrule was usually a commoner, who knew how to enjoy himself. The feast was an unruly event, involving much drinking, revelry and role reversal. Please be assured that is not what happens at The Dolphins Hall, although there is of course the usual slapstick, silly jokes and ‘overthe-top’ costumes. (Oh! That reminds me! In the last article I mentioned Anne Smith and Jenny Miles as being involved with the costumes; well I got that wrong, it is actually Gwen Hobson and she stitches them by hand. How she finds the time I don’t know but well done Gwen.) The changes that started to occur with pantomime in Victorian times meant that the shows were directed more towards a younger audience and led to a great increase in the number of children being taken to the various theatres. It was quickly realised that the entertainment was too long, so The Dame was introduced. Dan Leno, a musical hall entertainer, although not the first Dame was the most renowned of that time; he modelled the Dame on people he knew, garrulous working-class

Autumn Hog Watch from your Tetbury ‘Help a Hedgehog Hospital’ Warden Autumn is a quiet time for many animals, but in the world of hedgehog rescue our work focus changes and intensifies as the autumn juveniles start to come in. In response to warm days and plentiful food earlier in the season, many hogs will squeeze in another litter of hoglets, and it
is these babies who are in such a perilous situation when the days start to shorten and the nights are cold. They simply do not have the time or the food available to reach or exceed their minimum hibernation weight of 600g. This is where we need your help more than ever, as Autumn is the only time of year that we will ask you to call us if you find a hedgehog out after dark that is apparently fit and well. If it is under 600g, it will not survive and it needs to be gently caught up and given to us, so that we can care for it until it is at hibernation weight. A quick
Autumn Hog Watch check on a set of household scales is all you need to confirm whether it needs to come to us or not. Please also let us know if you see any female hedgehogs with babies, or if you suspect there is a nest somewhere in your garden. It is a certainty that these babies will not survive hibernation unless we take them in - and your vigilance is the difference between life and death. As always, if you find any hedgehogs out in the day, adult or juvenile, then they are always going to be in need of urgent help. Hedgehogs are strictly nocturnal, so although they may look fine and be rushing about, they are actually probably only hours from death, severely dehydrated and starving. Place the hedgehog, wrapped in a towel, into a secure cardboard or plastic box and contact the Help a Hedgehog Hospital. We will look after them and release back into the wild as soon as they are better. Please please take care when working in your gardens to clear long grass and moving garden debris! Sadly, we have seen an alarming increase this year in the number of hedgehogs severely injured, a number fatally, as a result of being strimmed or caught by a mower. A hedgehog will not run away on hearing a noise, it will curl up and wait for it to go away - so please check beforehand. Bonfires should be built just before burning.

Job for this month? Make a simple but effective hedgehog hibernation box or feeding station, using an upturned sturdy cardboard box. Cut out a small entrance at one end and cover it with plastic and then with earth, stones and leaves. Position the box in a quiet area against a bank or fence and make sure the entrance does not face north or north east. The hedgehog will make its own nest inside from garden debris, leaves and so on. Please continue to put out food, wet or dry non fishy cat or dog food, and water for our prickly friends. If you are looking for a completely original Christmas present we sell our own unique calendar and Christmas cards, Hedgehog feeding stations and much more. Please contact me for more information or take a look at our website. Many of you will have seen my very smart donation box in Tesco Tetbury. Donations of non-fishy wet or dry cat or dog food (chicken in jelly is a particular favourite,) kitchen towel, antibacterial wipes and spray are always gratefully received. Avening School Off to a wheelie good start! We have only been back for a month and already there have been three school trips, one school election and a fantastic opportunity for a small group of pupils who journeyed to Stroud to watch the ‘Tour of Britain’ cyclists whizz by. A big and warm welcome to the children in our reception class who are settling in well to the new routine and having a great time so far in the Eagles. The Kestrels have kicked off the new term with their new term topic ‘All about Avening’ which will include a visit to local mills and a felting workshop. The Hawks class have already been on a school outing to Avebury stone circles last month as they learn about the ‘Savage Stone Age.’ They will also be doing an archaeological dig in the school grounds and plan to make a round house out of the willow cuttings in the school garden.
Meanwhile, the Owls class have been on not one but TWO school trips already for their focus on Industry this term in ‘Work, Rest and Play in and around Avening’. They paid a visit to the Black Country Museum

Abi Geers Lively Minds One of the sessions I carried out was on child sacrifice prevention, as many of the communities believe child sacrifice is the best way to gain wealth. I was able to help change the opinions of the women about this matter and I also taught the women about the importance of positive communication with children, disability awareness and oral hygiene.
My family and friends were also tremendously supportive of my trip and as a result I was able to take the Lively Minds staff out for a meal to thank them for the work they do and to give them an extra contribution directly. This money went towards a local nursery school called “Pure Joy”, which is run by one of the Lively Minds staff. This school can sometimes go days without water, making it difficult to teach the children, so the money I donated will go towards a water tank. Once again, many thanks, Abi Geers

Have you created your Windows recovery media? If not, you may have to pay up to £100 to reinstall Windows should your hard drive fail!
only recovery options available are within Windows by using System Restore, or if the manufacturer has included a recovery partition on the hard drive, which can sometime be hard or impossible to access, should the drive fail.
With Windows 7 you will find a sticker As many of you will have noticed, when attached to your computer with a licence you buy a new computer these days you do key on it consisting of a series of letters and not get a Windows CD or recovery media numbers, 25 characters long. This can make included with you purchase. Often1 the21/9/10 681010 March Roofing:Layout 22:08 Page 1a doddle, as the key a re-install of Windows
is at hand, providing it has not worn or torn off! However, with Windows 8 onwards, the key is hardwired in to the motherboard of your computer. This stopped the key from being transferred or being used with another PC. Great for Microsoft as the ability to use keys on other PCs was stopped. However restoring Windows when the hard drive has completely failed can be a nightmare. To restore Windows 8 or 10 to a new hard disk, you will need an image file copied to a USB stick or recovery media for your PC. Oh, did you not make the recovery media when you bought your shiny new PC? Well, you can be forgiven. In the past you often had prompts the first few times you booted up to create them. Nowadays that rarely seems to happen or for others, the prompt is ignored or cancelled. This can be an expensive mistake.

Computer Advice
Faced with reinstalling Windows 8 to a new drive, I have found that using a generic image file, whether it is Windows 8 or 8.1 has usually proved effective at finding the hard wired licence key. This is important as the inbuilt key should work with Windows 8 or 8.1 media, but not both. However, in some cases neither will work and if a recovery disk[s] or USB stick have not been made then the licence code cannot be recovered and a fully licenced copy of Windows cannot be reinstalled. This is a disaster as a full copy of Windows could set you back around £100.
