Migraine Awareness Week Migraine awareness week 4th-10th September 2016 Recognised by the WHO (World Health Organisation) as a disabling lifetime condition and affecting more than 8 million people in the UK - more than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined - migraines are complex in nature and complex to treat. Treatments range from acute to preventative medication, Botox injections, diet elimination and supplements as well as new treatments such as magnets and electrical stimulation. Chiropractic can also help with certain types of migraines leading to fewer attacks and less medication needed with more than 72% in a US study reporting noticeable or substantial improvement (these were patients who had suffered for 18 years on average). To support this awareness week, if you book in to receive treatment for migraines in the month of September, your first appointment will be half price. As I write this note the sun is streaming in through the window with not a cloud to be seen.

– the chance for kids to have their photo taken in the Lion “cut out”, produced by the very able Lion Alan G. (More about this device in future issues.) Several big kids who should have known better also looked through it…

Ideal weather for a fete! The Lions have been busy with their tombola stand at several of late, at the St Mary’s School fete, The Cherington Show and the Tetbury Summer Show. At the Summer Show our stand was enhanced with a new feature

In July I also had the opportunity to represent the Lions at St Mary’s School for their end-of-term Panto. What an afternoon! I was transported in just a few minutes to Arabia, watching Ali Baba being chased by nasty bandits intent on stealing the treasure. The music and the children’s energy was phenomenal, and, as for their jokes, they were even worse than mine. (Oh no they weren’t !!!) Well done to all who took part… a visit I will always remember. Although much of Lion’s activity is about raising funds for charity, we do have some time to relax together and we also enjoyed our evening with our friends at Tetbury Bowls Club, an annual fixture we always look forward to. Who wins or loses is never important and we are grateful for the effort they put in to organise the evening, thoroughly enjoyed by all involved.

Lion’s Den With the difficulties which the Cotswold Volunteers have recently been experiencing in connection with transport for disabled, the Lions are watching from the side-lines to see if some form of assistance might be needed to support a new venture. Whether there is a need, and what role, if any, Lions might play, has yet to be clarified. Time passes by for us all and, sadly, one of our longest-serving Lions has decided to retire. Tetbury Lions was chartered fortythree years ago and John Moules has been with Tetbury Lions for more than forty of those years. He has given outstanding service to the community during that time and we all wish him well in his retirement. He’ll be missed. In June 2017, the worldwide Lions organisation celebrates its centenary, 100 years of service to the community. Ideally, we need to do something to mark this special occasion, but so far, we have not found a suitable project. If you have any ideas we might consider, do let me know. As the sun shines today, from a cloudless sky, with more sun promised tomorrow, I can’t help but reflect on my recent holiday in Devon with the grandchildren, when we managed only one sunny day all week. Ah well, perhaps next year! Alan Cross, President, Tetbury Lions

The 2016/2017 season opens with a free taster evening on Monday September 12, 8-10 pm, where non-members are welcome to come and try their hand at badminton. Players of any level can attend and racquets and shuttles will be provided by the Club. The following week, on Monday September 19, the Club will host a free coaching taster session with well-respected coach, Roger Stroud. Coaching will take place from 8-9 pm for beginners and 9-10 pm for improvers. After the first session, players will have the opportunity to sign up for a five-week coaching course at £3 per session for adults and juniors. Again, racquets and shuttles will be provided. Lastly, any players looking to join can attend as a visitor for up to three sessions at a charge of £5 per night and then have the opportunity to join for the rest of the year for just £50 - half the regular annual fee. Established in the 1930s, the Club is well established and has enjoyed success in a

number of different county badminton leagues in the past. In the 2015/2016 season, the Club fielded three teams, a mixed team playing in the Mid Gloucestershire league, a men’s team in the Swindon league, and a second men’s team in the Mid Gloucestershire league. For the upcoming 2016/2017 season, Tetbury is increasing its coverage adding a Ladies team to Division 2 of the Gloucestershire league. While the games are competitive, the Club is friendly and sociable and open to players of any standard. Monday and Thursday club nights take place at Cotswold Leisure Tetbury in a modern sports hall with four

The summer months, June to August, see a change in the pattern of our activities. The first Wednesday evening of June saw us bringing in our own paintings to work on at St Michael’s Hall. It was later in June that we were delighted to hear that His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has kindly consented to remain as our President for a further term of five years.

Then in July, there was a visit by coach to Art In Action at Waterperry near Oxford. About 37 people went and, as usual, it was an enjoyable experience; there is always a lot to see and the displays and demonstrations are diverse and can include such things as furniture making and the performing arts as well as painting, printing and calligraphy; art materials can be bought at attractive prices too. Regrettably, this may be the last year that this event is held. August can be quite a busy month for us. We are painting outdoors on Monday

Tetbury Art Society afternoons, weather permitting. Our first planned foray outdoors did not happen due to inclement weather but our second Monday went a lot better. We visited Beverstone looking for suitable subjects and encountered Jane who kindly arranged for us to tackle a very good view of the castle. We would like to thank her and the owners of the castle. At the time of writing this article, Barry is arranging a summer social for later in August. This will be followed by our August Exhibition arranged by Gill Ashley and Jenny Riley and will be held in the Tetbury Market Hall over the Summer Bank Holiday weekend from Saturday 27th until Monday 29th.

So – you want something framed – it couldn't be more simple.

Then, on the evening of Wednesday 7th September, we start our autumn programme with a demonstration of watercolour portraits given by Catherine Beale. This will be held in St. Michael’s Hall, Silver Street, Tetbury.

• You call to make a half hour appointment for me to visit you on a no charge, no obligation basis • I bring sample picture moulding and mount board to your home • You receive professional advice and a quotation for framing prints, oil paintings, fabric, memorabilia and also for updating existing 'tired' frames • I take away your artwork, frame it and redeliver at the agreed price within an agreed time scale

Information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666503926. You will find that we are a friendly group welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached.

The Mayor’s Piece

Oh dear, here we go again. It must be six years ago since I wrote my last Mayors Piece, and in that time Tetbury has had a series of Mayors who have been a real credit to the town, and now the chain is back with me. I am very proud indeed to represent Tetbury to the outside world and to do what I can to improve what I believe is the perfect place to live, work and visit, as well as resolving the problems that people have with local council issues on a day-today basis.

But the town is now a-changing. No matter which way you arrive in Tetbury from Cirencester, either via London Road or Cirencester Road, Tetbury is growing before your very eyes, changing day by day and this could be the situation for the next four years. Another 800 houses will bring with them around 2,250 new residents and I have no doubt that the new inhabitants will be accepted and made welcome as they contribute to the daily life of our town. There will be of course a good number of affordable homes; there could be over 200 in these new areas of housing, allowing young families and others to get on the first rung of the housing ladder. From what I hear the ‘affordables’ in the new Bovis development on Cirencester Road, Quercus Grange, have been much sought after and I know a number of people whose new address in the near future will be ‘Trubshaw Close’ and they are extremely pleased to be moving into a brand new home. The second completed development will be the ‘High Trees’ development alias the Dormers where another good number of housing opportunities will be available. Both the Quercus Grange and the High Trees are typical medium size housing developments with 50 homes on each site, unlike the next two sites, the SIAC site and Highfield Farm will be much bigger with almost 150 homes on one site and up to 250 on the other, both larger than some villages around Tetbury. The architects of these sites will also be challenged to provide interesting layouts, with maybe

We look forward to bringing colour and cleanliness back to your favourite floor coverings. Contemporary or traditional, large or small, piled or flat woven, hand knotted or tufted, shaggy or sheepskin, wool or silk – your rug will be cleaned using the right tools and techniques for the job. You can drop off or we can collect by appointment and either way you're very welcome to visit, discuss your requirements, and see us in action. 01453 836400 mail@rugcleaningworks.co.uk www.rugcleaningworks.co.uk Unit 11 Nailsworth Mills Estate Avening Road Nailsworth Stroud GL6 0BS

a number of courtyard developments making up the larger sites, rather than the straighter streets of conventional housing. One other interesting development currently underway is the Goods Shed conversion in the Rail Lands. At last builders are on site converting the old Brunel-type Goods Shed into a first class community asset that will provide many opportunities to provide interest and entertainment for our town. This site is well worth a visit to witness the progress that is being made - already a new concrete floor has been laid, the roof retiled and work started on the kitchen and toilet area. When this new extension starts to take shape, the site will provide evidence of just what a useful building the new ‘Goods Shed’ will become. It’s great to learn that the Post Office has shown confidence in our town with the investment in a new-look facility which will be open for longer hours, although I suppose I will still be rushing in at the last minute to buy a stamp or to catch the post. We will also be saying goodbye to Frances Lay who has run the Tetbury Post Office for eight years and endured the trials and tribulations of a modern day post mistress. Best wishes for the future Frances, we hope to still see you in the town. The Town Council have challenging times ahead, demands on local services will be bound to increase with our increased population. In times of local council budget cutbacks, it is local Town and Parish Councils that are in the front line of service delivery and who have to take the responsibility to maintain and improve where possible, local services. We have to become more inventive and more innovative to seek and provide new services and help town organisations to become more effective. In order to face these new challenges, we have put together a new town council organisation with the intention of being more proactive and responsive to the needs of the town. More of this next month. Cllr Stephen Hirst Mayor of Tetbury

Tetbury in Bloom Care and Respect It never ceases to impress me how much people care about Tetbury and how hard they work to maintain it for the benefit of us all – the Tetbury in Bloom volunteers are no exception. Dee joined the Tetbury in Bloom working team some five years ago and her favourite area is Saint Marys’ churchyard. This area is a joint effort with the Council team keeping the grass under control. Dee says “I take great pleasure in making Tetbury proud of itself. It says to residents

and visitors ‘I am loved’.” She explains that, “as I wander through other churchyards, in other towns and villages, I am often saddened by their state of neglect. It is not a criticism as I am well aware of dwindling congregations and the lack of funding, but in our churchyards there is a feeling of care and respect.” She goes on to say that “There is great variety in this oasis, from the magnificent trees, wildflowers and more formal flowerbeds, to the less formal corner. It is, of course an ongoing battle against the weeds, the weather and nature but we do our best to keep it looking good. We hope that it gives everyone a sense of peace, from the bride and groom and those wandering through and pausing for

a while and taking advantage of the many benches, to relatives of those who lie in the churchyard.” I hope that you enjoy the results too. On 31st July, in excess of 350 people took the opportunity to visit the beautiful private gardens as part of the sixth Tetbury Open Gardens Day, making it the biggest event yet. Visitors came from across the Cotswolds and as far away as the USA, many of whom said they will return sample all that Tetbury has to offer. A heartfelt thank you and a very well done to everyone involved including the wonderful gardeners (Pam Bird, Rachel Moody, Polly Reuter, Alan and Julie Simcock, Val Smith, Sue and Jeremy Townsend, Lance and Pat Vick, the residents of Five Trees Court, and our very own Sue and Stephen Hirst,) the ladies of the Womens’ Institute for the delicious homemade cakes and for serving the refreshments, the Feoffees for use of the Market House, Dee for the bunting that gave the Hall a celebratory feel - and to our Mayor, Stephen Hirst, for providing his cakes as unique and highly soughtafter raffle prizes. All profits raised will go towards Tetbury in Bloom projects and enable us to continue our good works. If you are interested in opening your garden in 2017, or being involved in such a great event for Tetbury, please contact Sue Hirst at sue@tetburyinbloom.org.uk or on 01666 504213. The New Season is Here! Training for our youth teams has begun and our team of Level 1 and Level 2 FA qualified coaches, led expertly by UEFA B Head Coach Phil Seal, eagerly await the kick off whistle. Our coaches understand that our young footballers play the game to have fun. It is not always about how many games are won or lost or how many goals are scored or conceded; emphasis is on continued development, enjoyment and participation for all. We continue to provide this in a friendly, safe environment based at Tetbury’s Recreation Ground. Our coaching

team continues to grow and some will be attending coaching courses in the near future. Anyone who may have an interest in coaching is always welcome to join the coaching team. With our Tiny Tigers (age 3 to 6) continuing their fun filled sessions and developing their early footballing skills this season, we are excited to see members from last season moving up to our Under 7’s. They will now be involved in small sided matches and we will watch their development closely to ensure they are continually being challenged in their football. Tetbury Camera Club Is it a bird, a plan, or creative lighting? Tetbury Camera Club will have an active autumn programme to look forward to when it launches its winter season on September the 6th. While most members have been enjoying the summer break, meeting up for evening ‘shoots’ and outings in the Cotswolds and a weekend trip to London, programme secretary Liz Cooper has been working hard to plan a full calendar of guest speakers and events for the next nine months. This year these will include five club competitions, which are open to all members - educational events created to help the less experienced camera user benefit from the guidance of more knowledgeable photography fans, plus regular guest speakers who will give presentations spanning a wide range of subjects and styles, from wildlife to landscape, artistic prints to digital imaging.

It was taken by David Calvert during a July visit to Canary Wharf and shows one of the many pieces of dramatic art which have become a feature of the financial district in recent years. The installation was created by designer and artist Ron Arad and is called “The Big Blue.” Not only a huge and dramatic focal point in the park, it also provides illumination for a sleek, modern shopping mall below.

This year the destinations included Chalford, Sevington, Malmesbury and Stroud and some of the shots taken on these outings will be shown on September 6th, so the evening will be a good one for visitors to see a cross-section of club work and hear what drew different members to the subjects selected.

The Scarlet Man Something was very unusual about our meeting on the sixteenth day of June. We were greeted by a genial upright scarletcoated Chelsea Pensioner. Ray Pearson, our speaker, was a widowed ex-National Serviceman who had lived for the last three years at the Royal Hospital, founded by King Charles II in 1682. The charity offers a home to former soldiers over 65 who have served in the ranks of the British Army, have no dependants and are in need. Ray was very positive about the Hospital. He said much there had changed in recent years. Still run as a military establishment, the three hundred residents (including fifteen women) are well looked after and the accommodation is good, with numerous social activities and excellent medical care in the facility, which Ray described to us.

volunteer not only at Atlanta but also at the London Games in 2012. Full of many humorous stories about his selection, training and responsibilities at both Olympics, he held our attention with tales from behind the scenes.

Well-stocked with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of facts and anecdotes, he revealed how at one stage 5000 Birmingham women produced 1500 million pen nibs a year and how 200 million ‘Thunderer’ whistles came to be sold to China. It was a talk with a difference. Twenty years ago Mike Cooper was a volunteer at the Atlanta Olympic Games. With the 2016 Games about to start at Rio, it was appropriate that he described to us on the 21st of July his experiences as a 1130509 Springfields1:Layout 1

Describing the opening ceremonies, many emotional moments, and the rapturous support for British athletes in winning positions at London, he stressed his overall feeling of being privileged to be there. But will he be at Rio? No, sadly not. Mike felt it was time to call it a day.

On July the 13th, eighteen junior football and rugby players set off from Tetbury… …at 3.00 am in the morning to take part in an exchange with Châtillon-sur-Indre, France. They were accompanied by Football coaches Richard Norris and Ian Stevens, Rugby Chairman Martin Lea, Councillors Tina Stevenson and Mel Hamlett.

Châtillon-sur-Indre Trip The purpose of the exchange was in part to pursue forming a partnership with Châtillon for the future – and Tetbury Town Council supported the four-day event with Ex-Mayor Sandra Ball representing Tetbury. July 14th, Bastille Day in France, was much celebrated - and the youths of Tetbury enjoyed both the celebrations and the cultures of 20 different countries all joining in the events. We would like to thank all those who donated towards helping fund this exchange which was an excellent experience. In particular The Feoffees, The Lions, Tetbury Town Council, The Mayor of Châtillon and those companies and individuals who so generously donated funds. C&R Pearce and The Pink Cab very kindly supplied the Football and Rugby Clubs with their uniforms. Maggie Heaven

More babies are born in late September and early October than at any other point of the year. According to new analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) the most common birthday in England and Wales was 26 September - nearly nine months after Christmas Day. Sandi Sorell, Advices Services Manager said, ‘There’s a good chance you’ll be able to get maternity pay if you’re having a baby and you have a job or had one recently. You could get one of these:

Town & Country News

Contractual Maternity Pay: some employers offer this instead of statutory maternity pay - your contract or company maternity policy should tell you if yours does

Maternity Allowance: you might get this from the government if you can’t get statutory maternity pay from your employer These payments would be as well as any maternity or paternity leave you get. It’s also worth seeing what other benefits you’re entitled to - such as Child Tax Credit, Healthy Start vouchers and a Sure Start grant. You can claim some benefits before you give birth, so it’s worth checking as soon as you can.

The Feoffees and the Thirteen

the presentation of The Feoffees accounts in The Market Hall - 1st October

What a busy summer the town has seen! It started with our annual community BBQ on the Millennium Green, where we all gathered for plenty of food, drink and catching up with old and new friends. It was great to see such a wide range of ages and it was particularly pleasing to welcome the young people from The Pod, who were a credit to both the youth club and their families. Thanks go to the Thirteen for all of their hard work in organising this free event for our town.

Following on from my last article, please note that the cows are in Preston Park and we would be grateful if you could keep all gates closed when using this area. If you would like to know more about the type of grants and support available, please do not hesitate to contact us. Educational or Training Grants, as well as discretionary Grants to the town’s clubs and societies are available by application to the Feoffees.

The Malthouse Update The Restoration Committee have been fundraising now for several months… …and with support from the local and wider community have raised over £4,500, with some exciting events taking place. The Lowsley-Williams family were kind enough to host a wonderful afternoon at Chavenage House. All the tickets were sold and everyone enjoyed a delicious cream tea and a tour of the house accompanied by a member of the family. We were very well entertained and the tour was fascinating. Pimms was flowing at the end as well! The Jenkins family hosted a fabulous evening in a marquee following the wedding of their daughter, to which everyone brought their picnics and enjoyed an entertaining quiz evening. There was not a spare seat in the house for the April coffee morning held in The Malthouse. This was a very happy occasion with delicious homemade biscuits and cakes and an excellent raffle run by Marlene. Our Woolsack Day stall sold delicious cakes and jams - this was the first time we have taken part in this fun event.

The team has worked very hard and spent many hours getting these fundraising events off the ground and by the time you read this there will have been a stand at the Tetbury Show with a Bottle Tombola and a Coffee Morning with Bring and Buy Stall in The Malthouse. There are still raffle tickets available to buy in the Summer Raffle with a first prize of £100, second prize of lunch at Calcot Manor and third prize of wine from Vinitopia plus many other exciting prizes.

This is part of the Heritage Day, when many buildings in Tetbury are open to the public. Other fundraising events are in the pipeline so please come and support them. The Committee is made up of the Trustees of the Malthouse, along with volunteers from the community, including the Mayor. If you would like to join the Committee or have some ideas of how to raise money, please contact me. We also have a ‘Friends of the Malthouse’ group which alerts you to everything happening, so please send me your email address if you are not already part of this group. This initial stage of fundraising will enable an architect to be hired along with surveyors to draw up the plans and costings for the restoration of the building. Tetbury Theatre Group During July the group enjoyed two visits to the Theatre. Thank you to Jane Bell who reviewed the first visit. On Saturday the 9th of July a near-full coach of members enjoyed a trip to the lovely Watermill at Newbury to see Watership Down, adapted by Rona Munro from the

book by Richard Adams. We arrived at the venue in time to have refreshments in the lovely and sunny mill gardens before entering the auditorium past the mill-race where we could see the remains of the water wheel from the original mill. It was a particularly appropriate choice of Theatre for this production as the original book was based in the fields and down land very close to Newbury. The young and dynamic cast produced an energetic and versatile performance providing their own music, song and sound effects. They utilised a limited range of props, costume and staging to bring the

lives and adventures of a group of rabbits to life, as they overcame various obstacles to setting up a new home at Watership Down. The cast brought out the variety of characters of the individual rabbits from a tyrannical General Woundwort preventing the Does from leaving their warren, to a timid Pipkin the youngest of the Bucks wanting to set up a new warren. The performance of Kehar, a seagull who the rabbits befriended, was great fun. The play appeared to have kept true to the main themes of the book and seemed to be enjoyed by a wide audience of young

and old, those who had read the book and those who hadn’t. An enjoyable afternoon in a lovely location.

October 1st is flu vaccination day!

This was followed by a select few travelling to Malvern for the Summer Classics Concert, performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ziegler, a native of Los Angeles and a conductor with a very different style.

Flu is not just a bad cold, it is a miserable week in bed at best, and can sometimes be worse. Healthy people can usually cope, but some groups of people are more susceptible and qualify for a free flu vaccination on the NHS.

In the first half we heard from amongst other pieces, “Waltz of the Flowers” from The Nutcracker, “Morning” from Peer Gynt, “Summer” from The Four Seasons - then came two wonderful and rousing pieces from Carmen sung by Rebecca Afonwy Jones.

On Saturday October 1st from 8 am to 12 noon the surgery will be running a flu morning. But it won’t just be for those needing their vaccination, we will be having a tombola, a stall selling handmade items and other donations related to caring for ourselves when ill - and the Computer Buddy from the library and others will be on hand to demonstrate the advantages of registering online to get access to your online patient record, test results, medications and of course to book appointments online.

These were followed by a unique and amusing rendition of “The Flight of the Bumble Bee,” played on the Tuba. After the interval (time for a glass of wine or an ice cream) we heard Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” - “Salut d’amour,” which was an engagement present from Elgar to his future wife - and a wonderful “Summertime” from Gershwin. The finish, and I am quoting here, ‘was a burst of summer ‘ by Rimsky - Korsakov with a Fantasy on Spanish Themes. All of the orchestra were involved with much moving around by the percussionists playing everything from drums and castanets, triangle and clashing cymbals. It was a wonderful evening of music.

Dispensary Hopefully by now everyone will have heard that the surgery is phasing out the ordering of all medication over the telephone. This is to ensure patient safety as the risk of mishearing over the telephone is too great. There are many other ways of renewing prescriptions; via email, in person, or even by post. The girls in the Dispensary are happy to answer any questions about this - just not by telephone!

Appointments

The PPG is supporting two initiatives this year, Community Smiles, the local patient transport service, and Longfield, the local hospice. Any funds raised during Flu day will go to those worthy causes. If you are interested in helping the PPG on the day pleased contact Jennifer via email or Pat Hodges in person at Skeins wool shop.

We seem to have two problems at the moment. Some people can’t get one, and others aren’t showing up for them. There were 67 appointments missed with GPs and 74 missed with nurses in the month of July alone. Sometimes missing an appointment can’t be helped, but if something happens so that you can’t make it, please ring the surgery to let them know, even if it is just before the appointment, as they can then allocate it to someone else. They can’t magic up any more appointments than they have now, so we have to make sure that we use them responsibly.

Booking appointments for the vaccination opens in the third week of August so ring or go in person to make an appointment before all the slots are taken. The receptionists can also check to see if you qualify for anything else. Free vaccinations are available to the over 65s, anyone who is immunocompromised and their families, and carers who get Carers Allowance or who would need extra support to help care if they were ill. There are others too, the best thing is to check

For more information on the Flu Morning and prescriptions and many other things, you can read the PPG blog or The Waiting Room Files. You can also sign up to join the vPPG* to get emails with the latest news.

fifty-one points, so congratulations to all involved.

We’ve had a very busy Summer! On the 2nd of July we served refreshments in the Dolphins Hall to the Town Criers who entered the competition here in Tetbury. We enjoyed talking to them and were very interested to see the beautiful gowns worn by the ladies (of course!)

A high spot, at the end of the month, was when we provided tea and cakes in the Market House for Tetbury In Bloom on the 31st. Many of our members had spent time making delicious cakes so we had a wide variety to offer. We are looking forward to presenting the Tetbury in Bloom team with a sizeable cheque at our September meeting.

will be on 12th September when Finn and Nicki Spicer will talk to us about River Barn Gardens in Malmesbury. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm so, if you are interested in coming along, please come a little earlier. We welcome guests and new members. As we did not hold a meeting in August, September will feel very much like a new start. We are all full of energy and open to lots of new ideas so that we keep moving forward. Do join us.

Our next meeting at the Dolphins’ Hall

Chris Gibson, Tetbury WI

At our monthly meeting on the 11th we welcomed Mary Day of Mary Day Silks. She exhibits at the Silk Mill in Chipping Camden and also teaches at Denman, the WI college in Oxfordshire. Our members were impressed with the examples of her work which included scarves, cushions and kimonos. Lunch at the Trouble House on the 21st was, as usual, very enjoyable. The restaurant was full and very busy so we were lucky to have booked well in advance. The monthly coffee morning at the Snooty Fox on the 25th was well attended. We encourage potential new members to join us here as it’s a good way of meeting us in smaller numbers. On the 27th our team played Ampney Crucis WI in the third round of the Skittles Plate Competition at the United Services Club. I am very pleased to report that we won by

We were also sorry that day to say goodbye to Claire Smith who has been manager at Puddle Ducks since we opened in 2009. Claire is also moving on to her new adventure at ‘big school’ and we all send her our very best wishes and thanks for all her hard work over the past years.

We must first though think back to July when we said goodbye to those children who will now be enjoying their first days at primary school. We are so proud of each and every one of them and we know that they will all settle quickly into their new classes and have a great time on this next step in their learning journey. We look forward to hearing how they all get on. We rounded off the year with our leavers’ ceremony and a lovely picnic. Thankfully the weather was kind and we were able to gather in the garden with many of the families who have supported us over the past year and a lovely time was had by all.

E R AT I ON

We are looking forward to opening our doors again on 5th September after the long summer break to catch up with some old friends who are coming back and to welcome new children and families who are joining us for the first time. We can guarantee a year filled with games, fun, laughter and learning!

Also remember that younger children need not miss out on the fun. We also run our Ducklings baby and toddler group on a Friday afternoon in the main Dolphins Hall from 1.30pm-2.45pm. Ducklings is a member of the Tetbury Toddler Alliance where parents and carers can meet for a chat and a cuppa and children can play and socialise in a safe environment. Catherine and Pat will be waiting with a warm welcome for all. Just knock loudly on the side door!

for the wonderful person that they are. We are situated at the back of the Dolphins Hall and run from 9.15am-12.15pm with an optional lunch club until 1.15pm each weekday during term time. A weekly afternoon session will also be available for those children due to start school in September 2017 running from January until July. Tetbury Summer Show What a great sight it was, to see so many families enjoying the 2016 Tetbury Summer Show on the recreation ground. There were near-perfect conditions, with a sunny afternoon and just a light breeze, which is fortunate as there are quite a few restrictions on inflatable attractions these days and if the wind picks up, they cannot be used. They are however very popular with Tetbury children and stayed busy all afternoon.

the gates for many years and were once again on hand to ensure all went smoothly and revenue kept coming in. IHS in the Cirencester Road have been the financial mainstay of this show for over a decade and kept loyal this year with another fourfigure donation. Another regular supporter has been John Newman of Jesse Smith Butchers, who not only ensured we got a good deal on all food associated with the Big Pan, but also gave up his day off to cook and make sure all went smoothly.

Cliff Perks went the extra mile to support the parade with three Reliant Robins, a giant crème egg and a “CHIPs” motorcycle. To the Lions, IHS, John Newman, Cliff Perks and all who contributed in any way to the success of the show, the committee extends its most sincere appreciation for a magnificent job. We can now look forward to some new attractions in 2017 - and of course the return of a few favourites. Put the date Sunday 13th August 2017 in the diary! Summer Show Committee

The show opening parade through the town, led as always by the City of Bristol Pipes and Drums, was once again well supported and drew an appreciative crowd. The land train, Mark Drakes beautiful vintage steam car transporting the Deputy Mayor of Tetbury, the extra long-legged Professor Crump, plus wacky race carts, Dolphins Dramatic Society in costume, 29 Regiment and so many others added colour and spectacle. This year we were able to add some glamour to the parade as it included costumes loaned us by the Art Couture festival of wearable art, held every two years in Painswick; definitely worth a visit in 2018. On the show ground it was heartening to see so many stalls this year, the majority of which were local traders, charities or clubs. One that drew quite a lot of interest all afternoon was that of the Model Railway Club, which had several layouts on display and many members on hand to give advice. An exception saw the return of stunt driver Dick Sheppard, who did some of the driving in the original film “The Italian Job” and who, in his career, has wrecked over 2,000 cars. He had an impressive display of photographs and was also selling copies of his latest book - an interesting guy if you had a chance to talk with him. The marquee was also a hive of activity all afternoon with the usual high standard of entries in all the exhibits, but it does get quite warm in there! Naturally, an event of this size cannot exist without a large number of volunteers and those traders in the town who make a contribution both on the day and in the months of preparation to help ensure success. The Lions have supported the Show both financially and by manning

Chelworth Bookworms The Versions of Us by Laura Barnett Cambridge 1958 – Eva swerves to avoid a dog and falls off her bike. Hurrying to help her up, Jim invites her back to his student room to fix her puncture.

Except that Eva doesn’t come off her bike, and cycles on to meet up with her boyfriend. On such small twists of fate are our lives built. Laura Barnett’s book follows three different versions of Eva and Jim’s lives. Version one sees them marry, have children and go through the common ups and downs of life. In version two, they do not meet until fifteen years later and then only fleetingly through the years that follow. Version three is the most disjointed, with their initial relationship halted abruptly, only for them to be drawn back together years later. The problem is keeping track of what is happening within the different versions at each stage - this is not a book you can put aside for any length of time without losing

your grasp on Eva and Jim’s ever-moving stories - however, it is an interesting concept – and you do want to know what happens next. The big question of ‘What if ....’ is something we have probably all asked ourselves at some point and the effects on Jim in particular show how precarious our happiness can be. This is a complex, well written book that ultimately suggests that even if some people are meant to be together, sometimes life doesn’t work that way. Just keep a pen and paper to hand… Ghilly Vincenti Chelworth Bookworms

Much of our recent work has comprised keeping footpaths and bridleways clear of spreading vegetation…

On the Cotswold Way near Wotton we’ve improved the surface on a muddy stretch and installed revetting boards to prevent erosion where the adjacent stream occasionally floods across the Cotswold Way path.

…we’ve cleared two paths at Hillesley and several around Cam Long Down. We have also renewed steps on the Cotswold Way up at the steep end of Cam Long Down and erected a replacement footbridge and stile near Wotton. We’ve also cleared paths for the National Trust at Newark Park.

The draft fifteen-year plan to 2030 for Tetbury and District has now been available for a while for comment, prior to submission to the Cotswold District Council.

Neighbourhood Plan

It states that an extensive rights-of-way network is a good resource for local people to use, for exercise and recreation – however, the nine proposals for linking existing paths mainly using former rights of way, including over Tetbury Common, are not shown – and neither is there a ma. This would have allowed short circular walks into the countryside. There is a map, though, for cycleway routes – which is good. Also, proposals for extending pavements along the roadside are listed on London Road at Ilsom, at Tetbury Upton Village to reach paths, and at Doughton to reach the path to Westonbirt. Surely a pavement is also required along Cirencester Road?

Local Walks Circular walks lead by the Wardens in September are:

Cotswold Voluntary Wardens

Monday the 5th of September at 10.00 am from Tetbury old Rail Yard car park for a 5-mile walk via Long Newton.

Friday the 16th of September at 10.00 am for coffee at the Swan, Wotton-underEdge, departing at 10.30 for 5.5 miles along the Cotswold Way via Wortley. Richard Glanville Cotswold Voluntary Wardens

Computer Advice Windows 8 is dead. Long live Windows 8.1 If you are running Windows 8 and have not upgraded to 8.1, you may see a message on your computer telling you that support has ended. This has come as a bit of a surprise as it had been said that support would be continued until 20203, but this only applies to Windows 8.1 Update. This has come at the same time that Microsoft has stopped supporting older versions of Internet Explorer. Now, only version 11 on Windows 7 SP 1 and above will be patched. Technical support and software updates for Windows 8 had stopped on 13th January this year. This may have come as news to some, but Microsoft had announced a while ago that one would need to update to the latest version. The latest version of Windows 8 is called “Windows 8.1 Update”. This isn’t a name you will find Microsoft using publically as they simply call it “Windows 8.1” which is the cause of the confusion. So, as well as Windows 8 [which should really be referred to as Windows 8.0], ! we also have Windows 8.1 with support that ended in August 2015 and “Windows 8.1 Update” which continues until January ! 2018 with extended support running to 2023. Phew!

If you don’t update to the latest version, you are more at risk from malware and other Internet threats than you would be with a fully supported and patched system. When a Windows version is no longer supported, the bad guys will look for vulnerabilities and take advantage of any weaknesses that are left open and you will be left exposed. Do not let this happen to you. Likewise, if you are using an old version of Internet Explorer, switch to another browser to keep yourself secure.

If you would like your computer cleaned, booked in for an annual service or to discuss any of the points above, do get in touch. For more information about Windows 8, including my previous articles from the Advertiser, go to my blogs on the website below. To check if your computer needs updating, right click on This PC icon and click on Properties. Near the top of the box that has opened up, it will tell you which version of Windows you are running. If you have Windows Updates configured to install automatically, you should be fine; otherwise you can run a manual update by clicking on the Microsoft Store App and then clicking on the Windows 8.1 update option. Although on paper the requirements for both versions look the same, I have found at least one system that will not upgrade to 8.1 although it was running 8 quite happily for years. If this is the case with your PC, check what the reason for the failure is and see whether an upgrade will help. If this proves expensive or is just not practical, you may have to replace your system, but do get in touch first.

Dolphins Dramatic Society Oh good grief, it’s September already; I hope you have had a good summer, at least there was bit more sunshine this year! Anyway enough of all that, you all need to know what has been going on with The Dolphins Dramatic Society.

Well it’s all change! We are still doing ‘Jack and The Beanstalk’ but sadly Alex Ball has had to step down as Director. He is starting teacher training and I am sure, as many of you know, the training and volume of work is immense. He was very reluctant to go but realised that he must concentrate on his training and so has passed the mantle of Director to Phillip Webb. Alex, all The Dolphins wish you the very best of luck, we know you will make a fantastic teacher and we do hope you will be back with us next year. This cast has already been selected; Anne Smith will be designing and painting the set with some help from Jenny Miles and Ian Smith of course. Phillip has directed several plays and has an excellent track record, so folks if you want a good night out full of fun, laughter and some drink, yes you can even purchase some wine, make sure you make a note of the dates 24 – 26 November.

when dress rehearsals take place. Talking of dress rehearsals, the costumes are going to be fabulous. Anne, Jenny and Phillip have been selecting materials, outlining their designs and working out how to make a cow! Any suggestions, polite ones please. David Hudson is providing the sound, lighting and some of the special effects; he is travelling from Cornwall to Tetbury once again to work his magic.

We must also say farewell to Casey and Joey Rymer, Casey is going to University and Joey will be moving on to Stroud to take A levels. They have both been a real asset to The Society and will be much missed. Good luck guys.

Wayne Hardiman

With the casting done it is now down to the hard work of learning lines, songs and making the story line come to life. The first rehearsal starts Thursday 1 September at The Dolphins Hall 8.00pm – 10.00pm, after which there will be at least one a week leading up to the Sunday 20 November

If you would like to join the Society, become a sponsor funding props/costumes (your sponsorship will be well publicised) or help with painting and sewing please contact either Terri White 01666 504189 or Jenny Miles 01666 503059. Terri White Dolphins Dramatic Society

HOTS has held two meetings since our last report – firstly, a group of us travelled to Thornbury on 7th July where we met our guides, Jane Marks and Pauline Montgomery, at their small museum. There was a display of salmon traps or “putchers” for us to examine whilst the group was being organised, and they had a number of booklets about Thornbury’s history that members had written. Before we set off on a guided tour of the town centre we were given a leaflet that had details of a Heritage Trail that referred to way-markers in paving slabs about the town.

The earliest record of Thornbury is dated 925 and the Domesday Book records the town and manor as owned by Queen Matilda. Like Tetbury, they were given the status of a Burgh by the local nobility - and there are other parallels. They had a short-lived railway connection and the cattle market is no more, they once had Feoffees, too, and gas was installed in 1856. Thornbury is a regular competitor in ‘Britain in Bloom’ and the plaques they have won are displayed on the Town Hall. They too had major problems with the water supply but for a very different reason - the town is built on a ridge of very hard impervious rock so it was necessary to carry water from streams and wells outside the town centre; one narrow footpath was pointed out to us. We were also told that some of the properties had cisterns in their cellars to store rainwater. Things improved when the railway piped their supply into the town. Their sewerage system was not installed until 1930, also due to the hard rock. The High Street has many small shops that appear to have been built separately because they vary so much above the ground floor. Almost all the roofs are covered with red quarry tiles - made fairly locally. Many, we were told, used to be thatched but some roofs are too steep for thatch. At one time there were a number of butchers and one narrow lane is called the Shambles. There is prominent “jettied”

History of Tetbury Society building near the ancient Market House. There are three old Coaching Inns. The Swan and the White Lion are almost opposite and on one occasion local lads swapped the large effigies for a laugh. Riddifords, grocers, was the inspiration for ‘Open All Hours’ and the original ‘Tailor of Gloucester’ moved to Thornbury. ‘Porch House’ down in Castle Street is an old hallhouse that can be dated 1402 and once was the home of the tailor who made the Berkeley yellow hunt livery. We did not have time to go into St. Mary’s church and the Castle was too far away but we had had a most informative and interesting visit. Out meeting on 4th August was the traditional tour of the Town. Jane Haines was our leader and she was very mindful of the new members that have joined HOTS recently so she was giving details of places and buildings that seldom appear in print. There is a change of programme for our next meeting on 1st September. George Cattermole will give his talk about ‘The Battle of Coronel and the Falkland Islands, 1914’ in Christ Church at 7.30pm. Young by Name The Power of the Summer Holiday On holiday in our camper van this summer, we had the usual struggle to recharge all the family’s electronic gadgets from a single cigarette lighter socket. Not that we’re hooked on our gadgets – in fact, we were trying to have an internet-free break. (Not difficult in Scotland, because the mountains block the signals.) But we still wanted to use our phones to take photographs and to text home, and I wanted to keep my Fitbit topped up. In case you’ve not come across the Fitbit, I should explain: it’s a fancy electronic pedometer that you wear like a wristwatch. It monitors your steps, heart rate, hours slept, stairs climbed, etc, and it keeps running totals against targets from day to day. With plenty of walking, swimming and cycling on our holiday itinerary, I didn’t want to miss the chance to boost my usually paltry average. It took a lot of electronic juggling to keep all our devices displaying the reassuring five blips of power. Although we have an adapter which allows us to plug in four devices simultaneously, the satnav and the reversing camera take up two slots permanently, so we still had to take turns with the other two.

If we stopped at campsites, the nightly electrical mains hook-up would solve the problem, but we’re too nomadic (and disorganised) for that. We just park wherever the fancy takes us, provided it’s legal and doesn’t spoil anyone’s view or privacy. This means our only chance of accessing mains power is if we strategically choose a table by an electrical socket when eating out.

you appreciate free Wi-Fi spots, but if you want to come back truly refreshed and revitalised, I think it’s better to turn off your phone’s Wi-Fi detector and ignore it. If you’re finding it hard to resist, just think of Wi-Fi providers as the drug-pushers of the internet, encouraging you to indulge your habit for free, while surreptitiously nurturing your addiction.

We’re not the only ones who shamelessly plug in at pubs. In Inverness I witnessed the manager of a fast-food outlet patiently explaining restaurant economics to two teenage girls. They’d plugged in their chargers and were using the free Wi-Fi service without buying anything to eat or drink. Eventually, the manager scored a moral victory, if not a very profitable one. Having bought one drink with two straws, the girls plugged their phones back in.

However, the most important battery was never connected to electricity at all. Instead it drew a steady charge from the stunning scenery, culture and heritage that was all around us as we toured the Highlands and Islands. Which battery was that? My own, of course. Scotland never fails to fill me with wonder or to renew my zest for life. I’m on five blips, me. Now that’s the true signal of a good holiday. Debbie Young www.authordebbieyoung.com @DebbieYoungBN

I would like to thank the person who nominated me as your Unsung Hero - it bought a tear to my eye as I don’t believe I do anything out of the ordinary. I am just fortunate to have the time I can commit to the school. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Woolley and all the staff, governors, parents and children at St Mary’s for a fantastic school, one that I am proud to represent, despite the many challenges.

Dear Editor,

Kind regards

We would just like all of those who contributed to know that a total of £1,537 and sixty-one pence was donated to Winston’s Wish in memory of Dan MarksBryan.

Liz Maisey

With very many thanks to everyone for such a wonderful tribute to Danny.

A big Thank You from Tetbury Hospital! The Friends of Tetbury Hospital’s recent annual door-to-door collection has raised a total of just under £35,000. Extra special thanks go to an anonymous donor who contributed a massive £20,000 to the collection.

We have just celebrated my Unsung Hero dinner at The Priory and what a lovely experience it was! The staff and food at The Priory was superb. It made it all so very enjoyable, thank you. I should also again like to thank The Tetbury Advertiser for providing the voucher in the first place, it is such a lovely idea, and last but not least thank you to my “nominator.” It means a lot to me and I do appreciate it. St Mary’s Day Centre As I’m sure most of you have heard, the charity Cotswold Care Volunteer Services, which funded and arranged the St. Mary’s Day Centre Wednesday and Friday groups and the Dial -a-ride buses went into liquidation on 15th April 2016. This news came as a great shock to us all, as it left us without any support or funds with which to run. As we cater for some of the most vulnerable people in Tetbury, just letting the group close was not an option. Tetbury Town Council immediately put this issue on their agenda for the following Council Meeting and at this meeting it became obvious that the Day Centre was to be made a priority; the idea that it could be closed would not be sanctioned. Since the meeting, and since the town became aware of the significance of the liquidation, we have been overwhelmed by the good feelings and kind support of many groups and individuals. I should like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the splendid support so far – and especially from Tetbury Town Council, Tetbury United Services Club, The Feoffees, Tetbury Lions Club, The Bingo

Club (arranged by Ann & Norah West) and the St. Marys Church Charity, who have enabled us to use their charitable facilities to carry on with our work. Without these organisation’s generous donations and the determination of the town, we would not have been able to move forward. A working group has been set up by the council to explore the long-term future of the Wednesday/Friday Group. and the Dial-a Ride facilities, since many people rely on the transport too, for Doctor’s. Appointments, hospital visits and so forth.

on a permanent basis in the future – but without the wonderful support of the clubs, associations and friends and volunteers we have, this may not be possible. Thank you all so much from the bottom of our hearts. On behalf of all who attend the St. Mary’s Day Centre. Wednesday/Friday group, plus all our regular volunteers and drivers. If you would like to attend the Day Centre or know of someone you think would benefit please contact me. Penny Williams penny-williams@live.co.uk

Many clubs and societies have pledged to do sponsored runs and Tesco are also trying to help through the welfare side of its business. It is amazing how the people of Tetbury pull together when everything seems lost. As this publication goes to press we have secured enough funds to carry on in the short term, and been afforded some breathing space to apply for a grant from the NHS, since many of our clients have Alzheimer’s or Dementia or other difficulties. We are also hoping the District Council may help. Tetbury Town Council has also pledged to look into extra funding in next year’s budget. Transport is the other issue we are now trying to address. This, thankfully, has been taken over by Community Connexions based in Cheltenham and has allowed us to carry on, but remains far from ideal. We hope to be able to have our own bus in Tetbury

Appeal in Tetbury has always been very proud to be able to cover the whole town and district with house to house collections. With the expansion of the town and some collectors needing to give up or move out of the area, I think that this year could be very much more difficult to do this. As a result, I am making an appeal through the Tetbury Advertiser for volunteers to carry out some house-tohouse collections, especially in areas where there are new houses such as in Quercus Grange. It is not an onerous task, but may take just one or two evenings or afternoons in late October/early November. You will be supplied with instructions and the box of Poppies and collecting tin. If anyone is willing to volunteer or find out more information about this collection please do not hesitate to contact me. Jane Haines 410713 Paul Dyer:Layout 1 jane.haines97@btinternet.com

Tetbury Police Museum Park Row Industrial School, drawing by Peter Loxton by permission of Bristol Central Library

Tetbury Lady Robbed by Tramps Whilst cycling between Avening and Tetbury soon after 8.30 on Tuesday night Miss Rose Priday, a young lady of Tetbury, was made to dismount from her bicycle by a couple of tramps who demanded money from her.

We have been updating our collection register and now have around 940 items, and with some pending to be catalogued we are approaching the 1,000 mark. It would be good to break that barrier, so if anyone out there has any objects, old photos, cuttings or even memories of police activity in the area then do please get in touch with John Silvester curator@ tetbury.gov.uk Now here are two very different Cold Cases from back in 1910:

A Juvenile Beggar At the first children’s court held in on Thursday, before Major Bishop (in the chair) and Mr T S Crew, Percival James Nurdin aged 8 years and 9 months, was charged with begging in Tetbury Upton. The police had a long list of previous offences against the lad, who had been remanded to the workhouse. He was now ordered to be sent to the Park Row Industrial School Bristol, there to remain until he was 16. Source: Gloucester Citizen 25th February 1910

Fortunately, Park Row seems to have been quite an enlightened establishment. As well as the usual school subjects the boys were given training in subjects such as carpentry and joinery. They were taken to the public swimming baths, to the Downs to play cricket and football and also to the museum and the zoo. Prizes were given out at Christmas for good conduct and they were taken for a two-week holiday at Clevedon. It must have seemed to young Percival a great improvement to begging in Tetbury. Indeed, it seems Percival had a twin William who doesn’t seem to have fared so well. On the 1911 census, when Percival was at Park Row, William was living in Harper Street [now West Street] in the home of James Nurdin; but William is described as a boarder so presumably was not a direct relation. James was aged 68 and was a retired shepherd now living on parish relief. Though not certain how Percival’s life continued it would be nice to think that (allowing for the lack of attention to detail at the time) he was the Percival James Nurden who had been born in Tetbury and had joined the Royal Navy, serving on HMS Victory between 1918 and 1922. She endeavoured to evade them but they persisted in either being given money or they threatened to run away with her bicycle. So terrified was Miss Priday with the tramps’ threats that she took her purse from her pocket and was about to hand them a shilling to them when they snatched the purse and all her money from her and decamped.

Typical ladies bicycle of the period Miss Priday cycled home as fast as she could and so frightened was she that she had not the courage to inform the Tetbury police the same night, despite the fact that to get to her home she had to pass the Tetbury police station. It was not until Wednesday morning that the police were acquainted of the daring highway robbery and given a description of the suspects. The whole countryside is now being searched by the police of the district for the tramps answering to the description given by Miss Priday. Source: Gloucestershire Echo 24th August 1910

THE ALISON PARKHOUSE ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP

In 1990, the Royal School of Church Music, concerned by the dwindling number of church organists, launched a “National Learn the Organ Year”. Here in Tetbury, the late James Cowley, then Director of Music, took this initiative further by proposing that a scholarship should be set up for boys and Alison Parkhouse, a gifted musician, who, in her seven years in girls, regardless of denomination, who were interested in Tetbury until her death in 1987, had done much for the musical learning to play the organ. life of the community—particularly for the young. This proposal His proposal hung fire for over a year until Sheila Yates, a senior was agreed unanimously, and the first two scholars were member of staff at Westonbirt School, expedited matters by appointed in 1991, one being Jonathan Adkins, a former pupil of persuading The Friends of the Choir that the scholarship should Alison’s, who later became Director of Music of Tetbury Church. be set up forthwith; moreover, that it should be in memory of In the 25 years since the Alison Parkhouse Organ Scholarship was established, there have been 26 applicants of whom 11 have become Scholars. All, in their different ways, have benefited from the scholarship and made music an important part of their lives, some in ways far exceeding the expectations of the Scholarship Committee. To celebrate the Anniversary, three former Scholars and the current Scholar will be performing in a FREE concert in Tetbury Church on Saturday 1st October at 11a.m. The concert will be concluded with appropriate musical fireworks by the gifted organist and teacher, Robin Baggs, who has taught all but two of the scholars throughout the Scholarship’s history. This special occasion will be a rare opportunity to enjoy superb music and celebrate the achievements of a small, but remarkable local institution. A paid-for feature

Like Joe, customers of all ages loved this year’s Roald Dahl themed summer events! It was apparent not only from the happy hum of people taking part in all the activities, but also by the number of books left on the shelves! The shelves in the children’s area have been particularly spacious (especially the Roald Dahl section), with an amazing amount of our younger readers taking part in the popular Summer Reading Challenge. For anyone who is yet to complete this, the good news is that you have a week more than previously advertised in this column! The last day is actually Saturday 10th September.

Our repertoire is a very eclectic mix, with pop, rock, songs from musicals, classical and jazz among our vocal genres. The emphasis is always on fun and the pleasure of creating good music together! Please contact us if you are interested, see details below. We will have sung at the annual Holiday at Home event in Tetbury in August, on 18th and 19th. The project is to provide those in the town, who do not really get a holiday, a chance for a ‘day out’, but on Christ Church’s premises. It’s always a really fun and uplifting event and we love singing there. Then it’s our summer break, with the new term starting on 19th September. If you are interested in joining, hearing us sing, or booking us to help raise money for charity or for a local event, please email or call so we can arrange for you to attend a rehearsal, or discuss arrangements. Tetbury Rail Lands Trust Hooray! The renovation work has begun, and the daily progress is exciting to watch. At the beginning of June there was a landmark moment with a photograph taken to record the symbolic lifting of the first sod in the preparation for work to commence on the Goods Shed renovation. The Mayor, Stephen Hirst, his deputy, Kevin Painter, Managing Director of Stonewood, Matt Aitkenhead, the architect, Ian Maslin and me (representing the Rail Lands Trust) lined up with a shovel and a pile of bricks to symbolise the historic occasion. Now Stonewood are cracking on dramatically - and they certainly seem sure-footed in restoring the shed - we feel confident they will do a great job and deliver Phase One on schedule before Christmas this year. The footings for the extension are clearly visible now and an old well has been discovered in what will be the kitchen floor.

we have sold thirty-six, so we are not quite halfway. We have broken down the cost into an individual seat price of £250 and are selling these with brass nameplates on the back, engraved with the name of each donor or dedicated nominee.

some way towards our target. Finally we need to find the money for the glass foyer that will provide the entrance to the shed so there is still a lot of fundraising to do. We remain optimistic and continue to move things forwards whenever we can.

You can choose where you’d like your seat to be, and we started by reserving the seat in the middle of the front row to dedicate to Sue Stoner - it seems right to put her at the heart of everything we do, as her tireless dedication to the Goods Shed even in her final days was amazing.

It is harder to put on events without a building but we are continuing with Car Boot Sales outside on the second Sunday of every month and they remain well supported. We offer outside tables just beyond the platform because the contractors are now in the Shed. We make this area accessible to cars from the Wiltshire bridge end by unlocking the gate. If in doubt, look out for our banner and signs.

Louise Verity and Carsten Mikkelsen plan to dedicate seats to important artistic figures that have inspired them, so we shall have some famous names mixed into our seat dedications as well! Once the seats have been funded and ordered we will turn our attention to supplying the deficit to equip the kitchen. John Andrews already has a grant of £7,000 earmarked solely for this and we have had a very good quote from Nisbets for a professional set up for £14,000 so we are

Please feel free to come forwards to join our group if you would like to as we welcome new members and are glad of the wide ranging talents and experience of our committee. You can ring me on Tetbury 01666 502877 or go to our website wwwtetburyraillands.com. Thank you all for your continued support. William Cook (chairman) Tetbury Rail Lands Trust

The builders are capping it off as no one knows how deep it is, or if it feeds into a network of other wells underground. It is exciting to watch this wonderful new asset for Tetbury taking shape day by day. A fully loaded cement lorry came to Northfield Rd asking the way to the Goods Shed this morning and I had great pleasure directing the driver! We continue to fundraise and apply for grants to cover the cost of all the outstanding elements not covered by our Phase One budget. Of these items, seating is our most pressing concern, as we would like to order seats as soon as possible to give the supplier time to produce them to our specifications. We cannot place the order until full funding is in place and so far

Recently there has been much concern over cuts to rural transport. Community Connexions, a charity with over 30 years’ experience, has stepped in to help residents of Tetbury particularly those with mobility issues. Paul Riddick, CEO of Community Connexions said, “Our small team has risen to the challenge of ensuring the continuity of sustainable services in Tetbury to the 800+ GL8 passengers that we have registered, in no small part due to the fabulous team of local volunteer drivers, who have embraced the change in order to carry on doing what they all do so well.” We are a not-for-profit organisation but costs have to be covered, which has meant fare increases in some cases. From midAugust we have three new door-to-door shopper bus routes on which concessionary bus passes will be accepted, a considerable saving for many of our regular passengers. If they prove popular we will be happy to extend the service even further. In our experience passengers not only love the convenience but also the social side of these journeys. Getting together to travel in groups on a regular basis has founded many new friendships.

St Mary’s CE VA Primary School We are looking forward to a new school year at St. Mary’s Primary School. September is a fresh start in the life of a school. We are delighted to welcome our new Reception children to the school and the children are excited about moving up to their new classes and new teachers. It doesn’t seem long since the end of the summer term when our Year 6 children put on a fabulous performance of Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits and finished the school year with a Leavers’ Prom Night in the Market Hall. We have 60 new children starting in Reception this year which is the first time the school has been full in Reception for many years. We are very excited about welcoming them in and our Reception teachers, Mrs May and Mr Foster, have already been to visit some of the children at home and in their pre-schools to make that transition easier. We are also welcoming other children throughout the school in other year groups and our school roll has increased to over 300 pupils. This term we are welcoming Mr Meadows to the staff team who is taking over from Mr

Welch as class teacher and Assistant Head. Mr Welch and his wife have moved to Wales to start new jobs in Pembrokeshire. We also see Mrs Bladon and Mrs Stancombe joining the Key Stage 1 team.

we have had one of our rooms refurbished as a new classroom for our Year 1 children. So with fresh paint on the walls, new books on the shelves and new shoes on our feet we are ready for the school year ahead.

We sadly said goodbye to Mr Richardson, our long standing caretaker, in July but we are delighted to welcome Mr Lea who has replaced him.

We continue to focus on ensuring our children make good progress in their reading, writing and maths but we also provide opportunities to develop children’s natural curiosity and give them the courage to have a go at things whilst supporting them in our caring environment.

As our numbers rise we have increased our classes to 6 classes in Key Stage 1 consequently over the summer holidays 830709
