Welcome to the 2016 Tetbury Woolsack Day The Tetbury Woolsack Team have been working hard to provide a great day out in Tetbury and the 2016 Woolsack provides something different. At 11.30am we have a new departure, ‘The Veloton Woolsack Sprint’. This is a unique uphill cycle sprint competition sponsored by Veloton, the cycle shop in the Market Place, Tetbury. Eight men and Eight ladies will race up Gumstool Hill with special bikes hopefully carrying ladies woolsacks. It’s not as easy as you think and we are looking forward to a great spectacle. In the town centre we have over 50 stalls in our Woolsack Street Market, including our popular French Market adding a continental flavour to the day. The great Woolsack Funfair is situated in the Chipping Car park and together with a number of street entertainers we promise everyone a great day out. This year we have three local beneficiaries, Hope For Tomorrow our local charity who provide mobile well-equipped Mobile Chemotherapy units which allow cancer patients to receive treatment in a restful environment close to home. The Tetbury Gymnastic Club who meet at Sir William Romneys School and provide gymnastic lessons and training for young people. They have a great range of equipment and are open all the year round.

Gugge 2000

Gugge 2000 was formed in Bournemouth by Dave Brewer (their Musical Director) in November 1998, inspired by the Guggenmusik bands at a Fasnacht carnival in Lucerne and the subsequent visit of Swiss band ‘Qua Quager’ from Triengen, to Bournemouth. Nine people attended the first rehearsal; whereas now there are over 45 registered members!! When they started, most of their percussion was begged or borrowed. Now the band owns kit worth well over £5000. Although no longer the only Guggenmusik band in the UK, they are now regular and entertaining supporters of Tetbury’s Woolsack Day and are back again this year by popular demand. For more details visit: http:// www.gugge2000.co.uk/ or contact bandmaster@ gugge2000.co.uk Tel 01202 896114

Woolsack race history Tetbury thrived in the middle ages as a market for wool, standing as it does in the middle of sheep country on the important route from Oxford to Bristol. In the 16th Century Tetbury was one of the best-known wool and yarn markets in the country. The wool trade went into decline in the early 19th Century, leaving brewing as the important local industry. Today on Woolsack day we maintain this link; drinking beer in The Crown or The Royal Oak – then deciding that running up a 1 in 4 hill carrying a woolsack would be a great idea! It is thought that the races originated in the 17th Century by young drovers showing off to local women by running up the hill carrying a woolsack. An official race day has been going for over 30 years now with world records entered in the ‘Guinness book of Records’. The woolsacks were custom built by the British Wool Federation and are 60lb for men’s races and 35lb for women’s. The original course of 280yds ran from The Royal Oak to The Crown, but since 1999 a shorter course of 240yds has been run. The race events are complemented by a street fair featuring varied stalls, a funfair, musical entertainments and roving entertainers. In over thirty years of operation, the Woolsack Races have proven to be a fantastic family day out and (more importantly) have raised a considerable amount of much needed money for local causes.

YOUR WOOLSACK NEEDS

Woolsack doesn’t happen by chance. It relies on people like you giving up a little of their precious time once a year. It would be a great shame if a centuries old tradition was to be lost through apathy, so get involved: become a Friend of Woolsack, join the Committee or simply help out on the day.
