Unlucky Timing?
Two
weeks ago I wrote my editor letter talking about Kasim Reed and the hypocrisy of him not coming out in support of marriage equality. Of course, my letter was published the day after he came out in support for marriage equality. Unlucky timing for my letter? Or was Kasim Reed psychic? Either way, congrats to Mayor Reed for joining the fight for marriage equality. His voice goes far in Georgia, so it is a great one to have. And with that, I will eat my words from my last editor’s note. Have a safe New Years everybody and see you all in 2013!

anice Dickinson is set to marry Dr. Robert Gerner, a plastic surgeon (naturally), in the spring. The two met a few months ago on a blind date at the Chateau Marmont and recently bought a house together in the Hollywood Hills. And here I thought necrophilia was illegal. In a revelation that should surprise absolutely no one, Lindsay Lohan’s probation stemming from her jewelry theft conviction has been revoked after she lied to cops about being behind the wheel of her Porsche when it rear-ended a semi-truck on the PCH. The judge— Commissioner Jane Godfrey—set a hearing for January 15th. Lilo faces 245 days in jail if she’s found guilty of violating her probation (which she likely will be), but if that does happen, it’ll basically be a drive-thru booking due to overcrowding. However, word on the street is that Commissioner Godfrey handles a lot of cases involving drug and alcohol offenders, and is a big fan of sentencing people to mandatory rehab. That sounds like a nightmare, not for Lindsay, but for me; who the hell am I going to write about if her drunk ass is stuck in rehab for months?! Speaking of which, Brooke Mueller, Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife and baby mama, is back in rehab, reportedly for the 19th (19TH!!!!) time. According to her attorney, it’s for problems with Adderall because she “was uncomfortable with the way Adderall was making her behave.” I get that. Have you ever met a full-blown Adderall addict? They are fucking CRAZY. Ever the class act, Denise Richards, Charlie’s other ex, obliged to taking care of Brooke and Charlie’s twin boys while she’s in rehab, so really she looks like the winner in this situation. All I’ve got to say is that when you make Charlie Sheen look like the better parent by comparison, you know you’ve hit rock bottom. Nick Cannon revealed on Howard Stern’s Sirius radio show that he and Mariah Carey listen to her music while they’re having sex. Am I the only one that got the mental 16 // davidatlanta.com
While speaking at the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey, Jon Stewart said that Hugh Grant was far and away his worst guest. Hugh was on The Daily Show to promote Did You Hear About the Morgans? and Jon explained, “He’s giving everyone shit the whole time, and he’s a big pain in the ass. And we’ve had dictators on the show.” In the interview, Hugh complained about the clip that was shown (that was chosen by the film’s publicist) and was visibly annoyed that Jon hadn’t watched the film. Apparently Hugh has also never seen the film, otherwise he’d have known that any clip from that godawful film would have been terrible. TLC, the network that brought us classics such as My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding and Honey Boo Boo, is now planning to “put the ‘fun’ back into funeral” (their words) by ordering a special/backdoor pilot “that goes behindthe-scenes of a unconventional funeral parlor.” Human tragedy is so entertaining! The real question, though: will Phaedra Parks be involved? In an interview with Esquire, mega-douche Sean Penn claims he’s never been loved, saying, “There is no shame in saying that we all want to be loved by someone. As I look back over my life in romance, I don’t feel I’ve ever had that.” Yeah, statements like that aren’t going to get you any closer.

THE YEAR IN QUEER By Jimmy Newsum
2012
was a rollercoaster year, with terrific highs like gay marriage passing in Maryland and Maine, the first gay Senator (Tammy Baldwin) being elected, and of course, Obama winning a second term. Also, another delightful gay show joined prime time television - three cheers for The New Normal! But there were deep lows too including the devastation of storm Sandy and the continued rise of hate crimes against gay and transgender people. We polled some of our favorite bold-faced names on how they will remember the past year in queer.
Besides Obama winning the election, what was the gay highlight of 2012? AIDEN LESLIE: Obama announcing he was pro Gay Marriage! MARTI CUMMINGS: All the great exposure and characters of LGBT folks on television. RAPH SOLO: California banning reparative therapy. FRENCHIE DAVIS: That’s a hard one. Oh honey, there are gay highlights everyday. Just ask my hairstylist. KRISTINE W: We pushed gay bullying even farther into the spotlight this year. PAM ANN: My appearance as bar bitch on Andy Cohen’s show with Cyndi Lauper and Sherri Shepherd, of course.
Aiden Leslie: Out musician 18 // davidatlanta.com
What was the gay lowlight of 2012? RAPH SOLO: Jack Reese, the gay Utah teen, committing suicide after being subjected to bullying in school. PAM ANN: Hurricane Sandy’s devastating effects on my darling East Coast gays. MARTI CUMMINGS: Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. AIDEN LESLIE: Mitt Romney. KRISTINE W: Straight actors portraying gays as cartoons on TV and movies. I find it demeaning to my peeps.
Frenchie Davis: Out Diva
What is the biggest issue facing the gay community today? FRENCHIE DAVIS: The fights against homophobia in the straight community and bi-phobia in the gay community. KRISTINE W: We need to teach safe sex to the youth and educate them on the high cost of AIDS. People can’t survive the disease if they can’t afford the medication. RAPH SOLO: In a lot of countries, it is still illegal to be gay. Ignorance breeds a lack of tolerance. We need to stand up and educate people about who we are. MARTI CUMMINGS: What happened to the days of taking to the street and demanding to be heard in a peaceful protest the way Dr. King led his revolution to freedom? We need to take a page from the civil rights movement of the 20th century and form our fight based on those values.
Kristine W: Dancefloor Legend
@DavidAtlantaGA // 19
Who do you hope will disappear into the gay abyss in 2013? MARTI CUMMINGS: Bristol Palin and The Kardashians. Bye-bye! AIDEN LESLIE: Mitt Romney. FRENCHIE DAVIS: Michelle Bachman and her little husband. I’m sure he is secretly in the mirror somewhere with a hairbrush, lip-syncing to Dreamgirls. KRISTINE W: Honey Boo Boo. That poor kid. I hope a fabulous gay uncle appears and sends her to boarding school In Europe. Now that would be a reality show worth watching. PAM ANN: One Direction could disappear in one direction outta here.
Marti Cummings: Gender Bender
20 // davidatlanta.com
Who was the biggest out star of 2012? MARTI CUMMINGS: Lindsay Lohan, but maybe not for the best reason. AIDEN LESLIE: Ellen Degeneres. RAPH SOLO: I have a lot of respect for Neil Patrick Harris and his continued outreach to gay youth. KRISTINE W: Jane Lynche. She is amazing! PAM ANN: Joan Rivers… she’s gay, right?
Pam Ann: Comedian
How will you ring in 2013? AIDEN LESLIE: Performing my new single, Diamond Dreams, live on stage. MARTI CUMMINGS: In sequins with gratitude and surrounded by twinks. RAPH SOLO: With the biggest smile I have ever had, because, finally, I am here, queer and very comfortable with it! FRENCHIE DAVIS: Probably singing somewhere followed by lots of wine. KRISTINE W: I hope to ring In the New Year singing, hugging my fans and working “Everything That I Got “. PAM ANN: I will be at home, in the arms of someone special – a girl can hope! Raph Solo: Out musician

MIDTOWN GOES TO HOLLYWOOD PT.2
O
k, even if you live in Midtown, this may sound surreal but it’s true--- ONCE Atlanta drag performers Phoenix, Mariah Balenciaga, Savannah Leigh, Envy Van Michaels, Violet Chachki, Baton Bob, myself and A-list actors Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Carrot Top, and all the other extras were in place, the director yelled “Action!” It was a lot of folks for a seriously simple scene. All we had to do was sing a song using church programs in our hands as if we were at a Sunday morning service, on top of the fact that I’m dressed like Little Richard! That scene was ALMOST the most surreal thing I’ve done recently next to what I’m about to share with you in a second. After that, the director yelled “Cut”. Morgan Freeman used this between takes moment to ask the director a question in front of us. First of all, listening to him, he sounds like he’s still narrating that story about those penguins right quick…either that or God. Remember when he played God in that Jim Carey movie? LOVE him! So anyway, like I mentioned in Part 1, during this Vegas scene, in a crowd full of famous impersonators and drag queens, there was a lady with a live snake around her head that was constantly moving around (very Medusa). Well, as soon as we took that break Morgan Freeman goes “I have a question, when they play the music, does it make the snake angry?” and everyone broke 22 // davidatlanta.com
out into laughter. Michael Douglas asked the director something too, I can’t remember because when he spoke, it felt like I was watching him in Fatal Attraction or A Chorus Line. It was crazy! Now I must share with you the most SURREAL moment for me EVER! I can’t reveal anything about the movie, but there was a scene where my character had to carry something in front of EVERYONE! The director yelled cut and told me “You’re doing too much Little Richard, can you tone it down?!” which meant we had to do that scene over …AGAIN! Well, once everyone was back in place and right before he yelled action, I had my surreal moment. I noticed that for the first time EVER, of all the times I played an ‘extra’ in a movie, THIS time the A List actors were the extras and I was the STAR just for this one small 3 second scene. This moment went in slow motion for me as I walked passed Morgan, Kevin, Robert and Michael while they were all watching me do my part. Afterwards, the director told me “much better” in front of everyone… you’re probably thinking “So what who cares” but it felt VERY surreal and kinda hot and better than pot. And to that, my attitude for 2013 is ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE, IF YOU JUST BELIEVE! Happy New Year!

Paloma Faith
“I’m an honorary drag queen,” exclaims Paloma Faith, obviously ready for the legion of gay fans her US debut album Fall to Grace will attract. The latest in a string of UK imports, Paloma stands out with a brazen style influenced by old Hollywood fashion and possesses a voice as soulful as yesterday’s silver screen specters. The album’s title plays on the cliché fall from grace and originates from a line in the track “Agony”. A song inspired by a relationship Paloma carried on with a drug addict, a conversation with a friend bore the album’s title. “I wanted [the album] to be something hopeful, to acknowledge I’ve had difficulty but I still have hope that it’ll be okay,” Paloma explains. Fall to Grace captures that hope with a unique blend of heartbreak and inspiration that spins across 13 tracks. The album’s lead single “Picking up the Pieces” builds a rebounded lover story sonically over orchestral strings to create a track that Paloma’s UK contemporaries should be jealous of. Comparisons will abound with Adele, Florence and the Machine and others but Paloma easily silences them with another album highlight “Black & Blue”. “I was slightly concerned around my writing process, looking at what most British female songwriters like myself were writing about- about how men had broken their hearts and ruined their lives,” Paloma reveals. “I had to think what else is important?” “Black & Blue” was inspired by a boyfriend who “irritated the shit” out of Paloma with his snobbish ways. Its striking and insightful observations into culture and society prove that we’ve yet to realize the depth of her songwriting potential. Fall to Grace is available now and with a hopeful American tour in March, Paloma Faith is our #1 reason to look forward to 2013. In addition to Franco, the film boasts the talented Michelle Williams as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, the lovely Rachel Weisz as Evanora, the Wicked Witch of the East and the tempting Mila Kunis as Theadora, the Wicked Witch of the West- three witches we’d definitely let cast a spell on us.
NBC’s Smash
With one of the most promising pilots of last year’s television season, Smash quickly became tedious with superfluous characters and storylines. We wanted more (original) music, less of those we cared nothing about and Oz is gearing up to not only please those who idolize the Katharine McPhee to become the star we always knew 1939 classic but also rope in a completely new generathe Idol runner-up was. tion of fans when it hits theaters in 2013. Welcome Smash back or as we are referring to it- Smash 2.0. Gossip Girl showrunner Joshua Safran comes aboard to shakeup season 2 as well as guest stars Jennifer Hudson and Broadway-star Jeremy Jordan. What should audiences expect?
Honorable Mentions Music Icona Pop From ABBA to Ace of Base and Max Martin to Robyn, Sweden has exported some of the sweetest ear candy we’ve heard in music over the last three decades. You can now add Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt, better known as the Swedish duo Icona Pop, to that roster.
More music! Not only from Bombshell, the season 1 musical based upon Marilyn Monroe, but also from a new show Hit List, which EW described as an edgy rock musical about fame (hmmmmmm Rock of Ages, anyone?). We’ll also see less of characters we care nothing about! Bye-bye Julia’s (Debra Messing) family and the conniving Ellis; hello more Julia, Karen, Ivy, Tom and Eileen. As for Katharine McPhee, hopefully her star will shine. Only you can decide when season 2 of Smash premieres February 5th.
Movies Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful
Dust off your ruby slippers Dorothy, we’re going back to the movies! Disney rekindles The Wizard of Oz with Oz: The Great and Powerful due in theaters March 8th 2013. Oz imagines Oscar Diggs’ (James Franco) beginnings from an ethically questionable magician to The Wizard of Oz in what is sure to be a visually stunning journey from director Sam Raimi.

The ladies smashed and crashed this summer with their infectious single “I Love It” which Entertainment Weekly named one of the best singles of 2012. But you can’t chalk these ladies up to just a summer smash. As they prepare their American full-length debut album, they released the Iconic EP this fall and it’s full of synthy hooks, big choruses and electro-pop sweetness. Look for big things from this duo in 2013. Boy Hamburg-based indie pop duo Boy (go figure it’s two girls) have had nearly 7 million YouTube views for “Little Numbers”, the first single from their debut album Mutual Friends due February 26th and it’s easy to hear why. The bouncy ditty about a phone number could be the perfect springtime romance track- if it takes that long to catch on. This could make you forget “Call Me, Maybe” because there hasn’t been a sweeter pop song about picking up the phone (that you can actually admit to your friends you like). @DavidAtlantaGA // 39
NBC’s Save Me, Heche is is back and crazier than ever, convinced that she hears the voice of God and must spread the word after a near-death experience. Crazy to think this could be hit? Decide when Save Me premieres in 2013.

Solange
This is the last time Solange should be referred to as Beyoncé’s little sister. Late last month, Solange released True, the EP follow up to her 2008 album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. Lead single “Losing You” has been blowing up and having settled into a neo-soul / old-school R&B style with adventurous production choices, Solange Zero Hour is proving that she’s an artist worth watching in her own right. Look for her third studio album sometime in 2013. ABC has struggled to have a real hit this year; audiences failed to tune in to 666 Park Avenue or Last Resort- not even Nashville can claim it’s reached the platinum status ABC had hoped it would. Zero Hour, a mystery-thriller involving 12 clocks and a treasure hunt (think National Treasure without Nicholas Cage), could change that. Premiering February 14th (Valentine’s Day), make sure you set your DVR timer to catch Zero Hour.
Movies Jessica Chastain
Austra Toronto-based electro-pop group Austra made waves in 2011 with their debut album Feel it Break. Maybe it’s the operatic undertones of vocalist Katie Stelmanis or the hopeful darkness that emanated for their first release. Either way with an upcoming winter tour with The xx (including a February 2nd Atlanta stop), look out for Austra’s sophomore album in 2013.
TV Save Me We always thought that Ellen DeGeneres dodged a bullet when she got off the crazy train that was Anne Heche but crazy suited Anne. Starring in 40 // davidatlanta.com
While she may not yet be a household name, Jessica Chastain is aiming to change that in 2013. You may recognize Chastain from her Oscar-nominated turn in The Help or 2011’s spy-thriller The Debt in which she played a younger Helen Mirren. But get ready for 2013 as Chastain will be starring in two movies in January about monsters. First, monumental Oscar buzz surrounds her role in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty (January 11th), which recreates the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Chastain later stars in Mama (January 18th), a new supernatural thriller presented by mastermind Guillermo del Toro. This is one actress to keep your eye on for 2013.
SAM’S The Great Gatsby Originally slated for release at the end of 2012, we were looking forward to seeing the illustrious Baz Luhrmann’s take on the F. Scott Fitzgerald story during the holiday movie season. In addition to Lurhmann’s pedigree, the film sports an all-star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. Despite production delay announcements, the rumored inclusion of Prince and Lady Gaga for the soundtrack makes this a film we’re anticipating when it’s released May 10 th 2013.

Man of Steel Hoping to recapture Christopher Nolan’s Batman success, Man of Steel launches its reboot bid on June 14th 2013. Henry Cavill is set to play Superman, the delightful Amy Adam plays Lois Lane and the underrated Kevin Costner and Diane Lane his parents. The cast is right, the timing is right but Superman films have had their share of kryptonite. Doesn’t matter- we’re looking forward to this superhero film in 2013.

or those who have pets, you understand the unbreakable bond that you share with them. So naturally, you want to make sure they are taken care of the best you can provide. That is where Bob Fawcett comes into the picture, owner of Atlanta based The Pet Set, which is the one stop shop for all your animal needs. He helps bring that extra personal touch of care to every customer (and pet).
We hide treats around the playground, and the dogs have to turn over in certain areas to get to them. Oh god, can you make one of those for us? The owner had no comment.
How has your past occupation as a distributor for pet supplies contribute to the selective criteria you choose to uphold in your stores? It’s clear that you’re very passionI’ve owned the Briarcliff location since 1975, and we added the Midtown ate about what you do, and you have a knack of finding a location 3 years ago. network of fellow animal-lovers. Can you fill me in on the history of The Pet Set, and how it came to be today?
What prompted you to open up the Midtown location? We’ve had a lot of positive reception, and I enjoy walking to work. Midtown is where I live. We’ve been featured on CNN, the New York Times. Well, I can imagine. Blueberry scrubs? I would love my hairstylist to offer me those. Just tell me where do I get in line to get reincarnated as a dog?
I still attend a lot of tradeshows around the country. A lot of the products we choose to carry are products that are “human-quality,” meaning we as human beings would use ourselves. Doggie-wear is free of saturated chemicals that can seep into your skin. You have to research what you buy, and we seek to establish that trust and eliminate that step for the consumer. When you buy animal toys, they tend to break apart, and these products are built like seat belts. The fabrics are hypoallergenic, detergent free. With rope bones, you don’t know where that rope has been. You want to look for clean, strong rope.
Our main focus is grooming and professional service with unique high quality products and all natural treats on the retail end of things. All of our staff members are passionate about what they do, most are multiple-pet owners. In any type of service business, passion often translates into high-end boutique, higher-quality to informative products. Animals which suffer from a poor diet manifest it naturally. But pets are domestic, which is why special care must be considered in the products selected for them.
Ooh, what about these holiday cookies?
When my little sister asked for a dog this Christmas, my mom told me the price of the special breed she wanted. Jesus Mom! That’s like a third of my car! So I guess in a way, it’s like paying that slight difference of price in premium gasoline to that large initial investment of yours.
They’re made from the finest ingredients, stuff that you don’t need to smell.
That’s actually a really good way of looking at it. For those who are new into the concept of doggie daycare, can you elaborate a little bit about what the Pet Set offers? Think daycare as a form of private school. We specialize in low-volume versus another place where there might be seventy or eighty dogs; we try to keep it around twenty. The animals go through a temperament test. We want to observe how they interact with other animals and humans, their overall demeanors. These playgroups often end up as repeat players. They tend to all know each other, chasing balls, playing fetch in packs. We switch it up, we let them play hide and seek. How do you get them to play hide and seek? 46 // davidatlanta.com
These cookies are made by local bakers; you can even eat these treats yourself. Yeah, these cookies don’t have that distinctive doggie smell that I normally smell from doggie treats (as I put the doggie treats back down . . .).

Cocktail Madness
Pop the Bubbly for 2013! New Years Eve Champagne Cocktails
The Black Bubbly The Black Bubbly is an unusual, but delicious, cocktail for your beer loving friends. Pour any dark stout beer (we recommend Guinness, of course), with champagne.
Blood Orange Mimosa Our favorite Sunday Funday drink just got a little more exciting for New Years Eve. Mix your champagne and OJ, and a splash of blood orange mix. Serve in a cocktail glass.

Limonchello
Poinsettia
A sweet and sugary twist on this Italian treat! First you need to take your cocktail glass and create a sugar rim (to do this, put sugar on a plate and then take a lemon wedge and wet the rim of your glass. Simply place the cocktail glass into the sugar for a sugar coated rim). Mix your champagne, a little lemon zest, and a splash of limenchello.
You like it sweet? Of course you do. Fill your champagne flute with a quarter of Triple Sec, top off with champagne and add a splash of cranberry juice and crushed cranberries for color.
The Classic
French 75
Bring in 2013 with an old fashioned toast; simply drop a cube of sugar into a champagne flute glass, and top with bitters (2-3 drops is perfect), Cognac, and champagne.
Many variations exist, but try ours. In a champagne flute, do a splash of simple syrup, a bigger splash of lemon juice, and a bigger splash of gin (about an ounce). Top off with champagne. @DavidAtlantaGA // 49

Nothing says “nice” like giving up being nice when you’re not personally gaining anything from it.
My life is 50 Shades of Gay.
Don’t ever worry about things that don’t worry about you.
I only added you to my buddy list so I could be alerted when your crazy ass got online! Sarcasm doesn’t belong in real life, hunty - it belongs on stage!
You’ve been around so much, you’re rated “E” for “Everyone.” 62 // davidatlanta.com
“I want to be with a dude who acts like a dude” is inappropriate and insulting.
After being approached and told, “I know you,” I replied, “You don’t know me. You just saw me.”
I don’t want another “project” boyfriend. Why can’t guys train themselves? “Imagine them in their underwear” is the worst idea to give a gay guy struggling with public speaking.
I only work out so I look good naked.
Don’t fuck up a good friendship over a silly relationship.
