“The Rules of Feminism”?

It was the burn heard around the world. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Taylor Swift made the comment, “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women,” in reference to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s dig at Swift’s love life during the Golden Globes ceremony. Suddenly, the culture that had been bowing at Swift’s feet since Kanye West stole her spotlight at the VMAs seemed ready to turn on her. After all, Fey and Poehler are two of the most prominent pro-woman celebrities on the planet right now, and arguing that either of these trailblazers are not helping other women is laughable (not that Swift would be able to get the joke, apparently). In my head, I immediately thought of a line from Mean Girls, which was written by Fey in one of her first spotlight-grabbing career moves; when Cady (Lindsey Lohan) mentions her crush, the Plastics tell her that she can’t date the ex-boyfriend of a group member, because it goes against “the rules of feminism.” Look, I consider myself a card-carrying feminist. Equal rights, period. But Taylor’s comment seems like an ill-advised stab at feminism through an anti-feminist notion. Saying that all women must support other women without question, lest they face the fires of hell (or Taylor Swift’s ire) speaks to a hive mentality that negates ideas like freedom of choice or expression, two concepts fundamental to the whole idea of feminism in the first place. Now I’m not saying that Taylor Swift should be hit by a bus or anything, but…c’mon. This should serve as an object lesson in how not to take a benign joke. Hopefully it’s a lesson Swift will learn. If not, maybe the rest of us can at least learn from this mishap.

o…Atlanta’s very popular androgynous drag performer, EJ Aviance, recently had a makeover… and now she’s that! Oh, “no tea, no shade” (as the girls used to say), not “makeover” as in plastic surgery or anything, I’m talking about her appropriately titled CD, I Am Art. The tracks are done…it’s ovah…and now she’s asking, “Can you handle it?” Well, I damn sho’ can.

Child, one night, while driving on the way back to Midtown coming from some trick house way out in Alpharetta, I figured I had plenty of time to listen to all 12 tracks. Honey boo boo, this CD had me feeling it from start to end. For me, it was like a throwback to the good Now you know the “tea” about her new album, I Am Art! ole days when most of the gay clubs would proudly play And trust me, she’s that! mostly house music. I don’t know if any of you remember you could go to Backstreets or Loretta’s or the old TRAXX (or how about the Eagle) and dance all night to some house—it was the one common denominator of those clubs. But anyway, back to miss EJ’s music. I started gagging when I heard track eight, called “Are You Experienced,” where EJ tells us about this girl wanting to take you somewhere in the back of the club to give you a bump. This CD has that true “Aviance essence” where you get a mix of everything: she gives you a very avant-garde way of pretty much describing her version of the “attitude” and the “ambiance” of the club scene with a complete understanding of who she is, why she is and when she is…the nerve! All of this with plenty of fresh house beats by producer DJ Jorge “Coqui” Villalobos to carry you through this rhythmic journey. e at David Atlanta are never above indulging in some shameless lusting and worshipping of sex gods. We freely admit it. Some of us are even relatively good dancers. So imagine our ecstasy when we discovered DJ Aron Abizker. A native of Tel Aviv, Israel, the ridiculously hot, muscular beat maestro is one of the most in-demand circuit party DJ’s around the world. And around the world he goes, presiding over dance floors and Pride festivals from the U.S. to Latin America to Europe. Along the way, this rock-hard stud sets the boys’ tongues wagging and their breathing heavy. On Sunday, March 17, GA Boy Productions brings DJ Aron for his first-ever Atlanta gig. “Green Tea” is a St. Patrick’s Day party that will also feature a special performance by EJ Aviance and go-go boys. Are you openly gay? Yeah! Based on your own experiences or the experiences of others, what is life like both socially and politically for gays in Israel? Is it open and accepting? Yeah, it’s very open and accepting. Tel Aviv Pride is becoming the biggest gay festival in the world. I always go back to play for Pride and I’m amazed how the Israeli people are so open about it and we get full support. When did you first get started as a DJ? Was it in Israel, or did you explore it in your travels? Yeah, it was in Israel, playing for friends in some small house parties. I started to give demos to people and I started to get bookings very fast. Are there any other renowned world DJ’s who you drew inspiration from when you were getting started? I would say Junior Vasquez and Victor Calderone. What city do you call home-base now? Nowadays, New York. What are some of the most challenging aspects of being a circuit DJ? Also, is it difficult to gauge the beat preferences and musical tastes of different audiences or cultures around the world? To be a circuit DJ is pretty fun. You get to travel a lot and meet new people and new friends. The biggest challenge is always to stay as one of the top circuit DJ’s and to play at the best circuit events. I’m lucky because I have spun all over the world and I know what music to play. For example, when I play in Europe I don’t play a lot of tribal. They don’t really get into it. When in Brazil, Mexico, South America, and the USA, it’s more tribal and vocals like diva remixes. I do prefer to play the tribal sound though. What do you prefer most: producing and remixing in the studio, or getting out among the party crowds and pumping up the energy at a venue?

I do like both. When I produce, I can get very creative with my ideas and my sound. And it’s an amazing feeling to play your tracks and see the crowed pumping up and an even better feeling is to know that other DJ’s are playing my remixes. You produce and host a podcast, right? For guys who may not have heard it yet, what’s the podcast like? I use Soundcloud. There, you can find a lot of my live sets from different parties and some originals and remixes of mine. What’s the story behind the “Blessed” tattoo on your chest? A lot of people are asking me that. You will have to know me better to understand that. I feel blessed in many ways. It’s hard to put in words. The only thing I don’t like is that people are copying my tattoo and I get upset because it’s mine, my idea. I have never seen a “Blessed” tattoo before. Now I have seen many with the same writing and the two birds. Oh well, I’ll take it as a compliment! You’ll be in Atlanta on March 17 to preside over the St. Patrick’s Day “Green Tea” dance at Jungle. Can you tease us a little about what all the guys can expect to hear? My sound is very sexy with good tribal beats and vocals. This will be your first appearance in Atlanta. Why haven’t you spun here before? What qualities about the city enticed you to make your Atlanta debut at the “Green Tea” party this year? I just moved to New York six months ago and I’m building my connection with big promoters and parties. Since I arrived to New York City, I’ve spun at White Party, Alegria, Masterbeat in L.A, Chicago, Boston, and soon I’ll be playing in a new big club in New York with top DJ’s. I do travel a lot to Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and of course to Europe, so I’m pretty busy. Clint Falin did help me to get in contact with the Green Tea promoter Keith Allen Young, and he booked me so I’m very excited and I’m sure it will be a great party. Jujubee Conquers the World

ujubee first came into the public eye as a contestant on the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2010. Even though Tyra Sanchez won that season, Jujubee finished third and her charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent made her a fan favorite. She was brought into the fold as one of the drag professors on the RuPaul’s Drag U makeovershow spinoff and she appeared on RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race last year. She now spends a lot of time on the road, traveling all over the country and doing shows—a few of her recent destinations include Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle and Houston—which is exactly the way she likes it. “I can’t stay still. I always have to do something. I get really bored—I watch court TV all day when I’m home,” she said. Among her upcoming trips is a two-night stand right here in Atlanta at Burkhart’s on March 21 and 22. Phoenix and Mariah, who both competed in the third season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and call Atlanta home, will be there too, along with what Jujubee estimated will be a “million drag queens.” It will be her second time visiting Atlanta. She came here previously to do an Atlanta Pride event at the Georgia Aquarium, a venue that dazzled her. “It was the most beautiful thing that I’ve ever seen. The fact that there is a room surrounded by an aquarium really boggles my mind,” she said. Though she did stand-up comedy in one of the challenges on All Stars, she said that she has no plans to make that a regular part of her act because of the pressure. “Stand-up comedy, for me, I think is one of the hardest things for a performer to do because it’s one of those things where if you bomb a joke, you bomb a joke…I don’t know how much nerve I have,” she explained. However, she has heard that fellow season two contestant Pandora Boxx does a half hour of stand-up comedy in her act. “It is hilarious. If you get a chance, check her out,” she recommended. The experience of being on the RuPaul’s Drag Race shows, all three of them, was rewarding for Jujubee. She spoke highly of RuPaul herself and of the camaraderie with the other queens. “RuPaul is legendary. She is just—she’s just amazing and crazy and such a great person,” she said. “I’d have to say my favorite part [of the show] was to really get to know a lot of the drag queens that were there. I didn’t expect to make really close friends because it was a competition, but yeah. Raven and I have been close friends and Jessica Wild and I see each other all the time now because she now lives in Boston—it’s a close-knit family. It’s really cool. It’s growing, definitely growing.” Though Jujubee loves to travel, there’s no place like home and Boston is just that for her. She loves a lot of things about the city, including its sports teams (she likes the Boston Bruins, especially the frequently-shirtless Tyler Seguin) and the fact that it’s walkable. “The city is just—it feels like home to me. There’s never the same feeling that I have traveling anywhere else. I get to see great places and meet great

Much later this year, at the end of November, Jujubee will be among legions of drag queens aboard the Drag Stars at Sea—Goddesses cruise from Al and Chuck Travel. “[The cruise is] right after Thanksgiving, so you get a little time to kind of get away from the family to hang out with your other family,” she said. Every single contestant from the fifth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race will be on the cruise, too, along with Raja from season three, Sharon Needles from season four, Alexis Mateo, Phi Phi O’Hara, Mimi Imfirst and more. Jujubee was previously part of Al and Chuck’s Drag Stars at Sea Caribbean Adventure in December 2012 and had a great time interacting with fans onboard. So Jujubee is kind of a busy gal, but she also wants to do something else. “I want to make music. I want to sing. I want to sing a couple of songs. Wait for that,” she said.

While at home, Jujubee also enjoys the company of her cats Priss and Mister. “My drag mom was like, ‘hey, I know you want a cat. My friend’s cat just had a whole bunch of babies and he’s gonna have to put them in the animal shelter…,’” she explained. “So I went and grabbed him and I just named him Mister. He’s pretty lazy.” Mister also has his own Facebook page. In April, the well-traveled Jujubee will make the long trip all the way to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. “I’m very excited to go to Cambodia because I never thought that I would actually go that close to where my parents came from, right next to Laos,” she said. She’s fluent in Laotian and Thai and proud of her heritage. “It’s so exciting and totally surreal—I know it’s happening, but it’s not going to feel real until I’m actually on my way there. It’s a long trip, but it’s going to be worth every moment.” 22 // davidatlanta.com

Pink Peach Competition Brings LGBT Cinema to Atlanta By Elijah Sarkesian

ans of LGBT cinema looking for a fix before Out on Film returns this fall have an outlet at the Atlanta Film Festival, which returns to Atlanta March 15–24. The six films that make up the Pink Peach Feature Competition take on love, relationships, politics, religion, and some good old S&M. That last theme features prominently in the highest-profile film in competition: Interior. Leather Bar., the latest gay-themed project from James Franco. The film takes its inspiration from a rumor surrounding the 1980 film 26 // davidatlanta.com

Cruising, which starred Al Pacino as an undercover police officer investigating the murders of gay men. According to the film’s director, William Friedkin, roughly 40 minutes of S&M footage was cut in order for the film to avoid an X rating. Franco, along with co-director Travis Mathews, use Interior. Leather Bar. as an attempt to recreate this lost footage. In doing so, the film—and the characters involved—largely explore the process of making such a film, delving into areas including the representation of LGBT issues since Crusing’s original release.

Playing alongside Interior. Leather Bar. is the film Pit Stop. The film examines the lives of gay men in smalltown America through the stories of two men. Gabe is getting over an affair with a married man, while Ernesto is avoiding life at home with his live-in ex-boyfriend. Both Gabe and Ernesto long for romance, even in their small town. Relationships also come into play in Mosquita y Mari, a tender coming-of-age story between two young girls, Yolanda and Mari. An incident at school draws the two girls into a friendship that eventually leads into what the filmmakers term “unknown territory.” I’ll leave the composition of the territory to your imaginations.

Different relationship ideas are explored in Concussion, a fictional film based on a real-life incident that happened to writer/director Stacie Passon. In the film, following an incident involving a baseball hit to the head, Abby finds herself bored with her suburban life with her wife and kids. Instead, she wants to start a new life— and a new career—in Manhattan. The Pink Peach Feature Competition also includes a pair of documentaries. The first, God Loves Uganda, is a provocative examination of the influence of evangelical leaders in Uganda, particularly in regards to homosexuality. Think of Uganda’s infamous “Kill the Gays” bill from last year. The second documentary in competition is Breaking Through, a look at out LGBT elected officials through their own stories. Amsterdam is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on Sunday, with green martinis and green beer being served with brunch. Atlanta Eagle presents Mash Attack! Saint Patrick’s Day Edition with DJ Pat Scott on Saturday night, which also serves as the Atlanta Bucks Bar Night. Patrons wearing green get drink specials. Blake’s is bringing in special guest DJ Chris Griswold on Sunday to help celebrate the holiday. Burkhart’s throws a St. Patrick’s Madness Party on Sunday, with a traditional corned beef dinner on the menu and party favors given away. Friends on Ponce is hosting a Traditional Irish Dinner on Sunday, beginning at 4 p.m. Heretic presents DJ Escape on Saturday night. Cover for the event is free before 11 p.m. and $10 after that time. The Hideaway is throwing a St. Patty’s Day Party on Sunday, complete with green beer and beads. Jungle is hosting GA Boy Productions’ special Green Tea Dance, with special guest DJ Aron. The show begins at 7 p.m. and also includes a special performance by EJ Aviance. The Model T presents a Traditional Irish Dinner, complete with corn beef and cabbage, beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. My Sister’s Room is throwing Get Lucky: Glow Party Edition on Saturday, with glow bracelets given at the door—red for those who are taken, and green for the single people. Flip Cup and Lesbian Speed Dating are being held on the patio deck, with prizes and giveaways given out all night.

‘OUTlaw’ Singer Speaks About Bullying, New Album and Working with Willam from ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’

hile many artists these days spend half their records trying to convince you just how country they are, it is refreshing when an artist comes along who knows exactly who he is. Drake Jensen, who releases his second studio album OUTlaw March 12, is that artist. Growing up in Canada, Jensen was immersed in country music. “I was raised on Merle Haggard, George Strait, John Conlee, Ronnie Milsap and Charlie Pride,” Jensen said. “A lot of my singing style was adapted from my early days of listening to that kind of music.”
