biggest (self-imposed) hurdles I faced before coming out was feeling like I didn’t fit the go-to image of what a gay boy was supposed to be. By becoming engaged in the community, I’ve found areas where I can feel comfortable in my own skin. So thank you, Atlanta, for providing something for so many different types of people with a variety of interests and backgrounds. It’s that sense of diversity we try to represent each week. Angelica D’Paige: Giving us ALL the “tea”!
O
kay, so what had happened was…while stuffing my face with those soft chocolate chip cookies from Subway and catching up on that TV show, Teen Wolf, I almost choked on those cookies when I saw a familiar face grinning from cheek to cheek on my flat screen! I was caught off guard as I was trying to shout out ”OMG, that’s Angelica D’ Paige! Yes bitch!” Of course after I swallowed those cookies (whole) and washed them down with some almond milk, I went in! Imagine, you see this fabulous drag diva all the time at Burkhart’s then later on a TV show in the privacy of your own bedroom! Angelica D’ Paige has been a popular entertainer in the scene for a long time now. She currently hosts at Burkhart’s three nights a week (Monday and Tuesdays for karaoke, and Fridays for the Fab Five). She also gives Blake’s a piece of her on their Saturday show. But for now, we’re going to start this interview with the whole Teen Wolf show and what’s it like…then get down to the nitty gritty when we finally talk about what’s it like for a transsexual dating a girl. Let’s get Untucked! Let’s start off by you telling me how you got to do a club scene on the hot TV show, Teen Wolf (the show used Jungle for the club).
Yay, twinks! They’re great together actually; the show sometimes come off as if they’re dating! So could you tell if they were gay or not off camera? Give us the scoop, “gur.” All I know is, they held us in the dressing room the majority of the time, until one of the assistants would yell on his megaphone, “Send in the Drag Queens!” Sorry Brent, but I couldn’t tell if they were gay off camera. However, they were really nice and the pay was cute. Damn. Well girl, you need to see if you can be a recurring guest on that show right quick! I do want to say that I think it’s hot that the show embraced the gay community and filmed it at one of Atlanta’s popular gay clubs. And of course, it’s great to get that TV exposure! Amen…especially since the director is gay, even hotter! But moving right along, it’s no big secret that you don’t mind dating women as well as men. Isn’t that like being straight all over again? Angelica: Well…
One day my very good girlfriend from RuPaul’s Drag Race, Phoenix, called me and hooked me up. …along with Alissah Brooks and Dax Exclamation. That’s awesome. Phoenix? I’ve heard of her. (Haha…love you, Phoenix!) Did you get to meet any of the stars from that show? Yes, even though that club scene took 14 long hours. I was with Tyler Posey, who plays the main character [Scott McCall], and Dylan O’Brien who plays his best friend [“Stiles” Stilinski. 14 // davidatlanta.com

WOOF! Johnny Skandros Hooks Up with Atlanta By Elijah Sarkesian

L
ooking for love—or something significantly quicker—has never been possible in quite as many ways as it is today, thanks to the rise of the Internet and social apps on smart phones. Finding guys who fit a particular type, though, can sometimes be a bit more challenging. For many gay men across the world, that’s where Scruff comes in. “My friend Eric [Silverberg] and I, we wanted to create an app that really spoke to a different community,” says Johnny Skandros, a.k.a. Johnny Scruff, the co-creator of Scruff. Skandros and Silverberg launched Scruff back in 2010, and since then, it’s become one of the biggest social apps for gay men all over the world. Within three years, the app has garnered 5 million users all over the world. As for that community Skandros wanted to reach, it was one that was a little…hairier than the norm. “I had noticed in New York City, there was this new culture of scruffier guys—guys who were a little more masculine, guys with beards, a lot of bears,” Skandros says. “I was familiar with the bear community as well, so I saw this mix of the bear community and these scruffier guys.” With a wide number of social apps available for download, standing out is vital to becoming—and staying—a success. Skandros believes that Scruff’s users make the difference, both in number and range. “I think the thing that distinguishes us the most is the guys on Scruff. When you log on to Scruff, you see a different community of guys than you do on other apps,” Skandros says. “We have a lot of military men, we have a lot of athletes. We have a very strong presence of guys that, I think, are visibly different than what you see on the others. We’re definitely a little more niche, but we’re special, and I think people have responded really well to the name and the community. That’s risen around the app itself.” Part of growing that community is making sure the app is available to more users across the world. While Scruff started as an iOS app, it’s grown to include an Android version and, in the last month, a new Windows Phone version as well. While the app itself is free (and more robust than many competing apps), iOS and Android users can purchase subscriptions for more advanced features, with pro features coming to Windows Phone soon. Scruff is making sure that the app stays on top of its
game, too, according to Skandros: “We have a big release coming up. I can’t tell you what features we’re coming up with, but I think the community’s going to love them. I think we’re one of the most feature-rich apps on the market already, so we have a lot of cool stuff planned that I think our members are really going to love. We’re excited about that as well.” One common criticism lobbed at apps like Scruff is that their popularity is killing gay nightlife as it’s been known for decades. Common complaints include talk about guys looking at their phone for men instead of around them in bars. Skandros politely, but firmly, disagrees with this assessment. “I think apps like Scruff haven’t killed gay nightlife, they’ve actually helped it,” says Skandros. “The birth of the Internet certainly changed the dynamics of the gay community; however, gay men have proven that they still want to go out, dance, and socialize face to face. Apps like Scruff also make connections happen faster, which can lead to grabbing a beer at a bar as a first date.” As part of making Scruff a community app, they’ve made opportunities available to bars and clubs as well: these venues have the ability to list events for free in the app, which provides users with information about where to go both locally and abroad. Scruff also hosts a select number of sponsored events throughout the year. According to Skandros, “Scruff sponsored events bring in some of the largest crowds most bars have ever seen, so it’s apparent to us that people want nightlife.” @DavidAtlantaGA // 17

Which brings us to Atlanta. Scruff is bringing its party to Atlanta for the first time ever on April 12 at Heretic, and Skandros for one is excited. “This is the first time I’ve ever been to Georgia. I’m excited. I know Atlanta’s really popular… I know Atlanta’s very active on Scruff, so I’m expecting a big night. (laughs) I’ve never been [to Atlanta], but I chat with guys from Atlanta all the time on Scruff, and they seem really friendly.” This aspect of the job—partying in various cities across the country—is what Skandros is famous for among Scruff users. It’s a part of the job that Skandros and his team enjoy. “Events are really a fun thing for me, and for Scruff,” says Skandros. “It’s not any source of revenue for us. This is just a way for us to have fun, meet guys, give out Scruff swag, and I think most importantly, bring the community together.” Skandros also predicts a huge turnout, if Atlanta’s like other locations where Scruff parties have been held. “When guys hear about a Scruff night, they know that they’re going to see a different crowd of guys at that bar that they’re not normally going to see, because it’s heavily advertised on our app, heavily advertised on Facebook,” says Skandros. “So you get a crop of guys that may not necessarily frequent that bar, or even come out, really.” “These events have become extremely popular whenever we do them, and during the event, it’s really me with my friends, and during this event [in Atlanta], I’m bringing a huge group of people from New York with me.” The group he’s bringing to Atlanta includes DJ Shane Stiel of San Diego alongside Atlanta’s own DJ Sean Mac, as well as faces familiar to Scruff users like Joey Scruff, Anthony Angelico, Nathan Parker, DJ Nando and Brian Raffery. The crew will be giving away special Scruff swag, including t-shirts and dog tags. Skandros also hints at something extra for those of you with the Scruff app on your phones: “There’s definitely going to be some booze involved for people who show me their Scruff app.” If making your way out that night is still up for debate in your head, Skandros has one last pitch for you. “It’s really a way for me to meet the community, and really for the community to meet each other. So…good music, dancing, fun, booze, Scruff…it’ll be a good night, I promise.” Scruff invades Heretic on Friday, April 12, beginning at 9 p.m. Entry is free before 10 p.m. and $10 after 10. Atlanta Leather Pride Returns By Van Gower
L
eather and fetish enthusiasts of all genders from Atlanta and across the country will descend upon gay Atlanta for the third annual Atlanta Leather Pride, April 12–14. The three-day weekend of fun and celebration will feature a packed schedule of events designed to glorify all things leathery, including a Mr./Ms. Atlanta Eagle Contest, at Atlanta Eagle, its host bar. The bar is celebrating its 26th anniversary this year. The festivities get underway on Friday, April 12 with a Leather Pride Kickoff featuring BDSM and fetish demonstrations by local clubs, Panther Leather/Levi club bar, 20 // davidatlanta.com
and bootblacking by Girl Dale. A DJ will spin hot sounds. Saturday’s schedule will feature an Afternoon Leather BBQ and beer bust, a private cocktail reception for Mr./ Ms. Atlanta Eagle Contest judges and contestants, the contest itself, “Sweat” Mr./Ms. Atlanta Eagle Victory Party, and more bootblacking by Girl Dale. The weekend concludes with a Leather Brunch at Roxx on Cheshire Bridge Road. Atlanta Leather Pride’s relationship with the venerable Atlanta
Eagle is special and unique in that it is a collaborative effort between the bar and the members of the Panther Leather/Levi Club, according to Pup Nitro, a co-coordinator of Atlanta Leather Pride with SIR Alan. “Atlanta Leather Pride coincides each year with the anniversary of the Atlanta Eagle. This year the Atlanta Eagle will be celebrating its 26th anniversary. The Panther Leather/Levi club will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in May,” said Nitro.

The leather and fetish lifestyles may seem taboo to the uninitiated or for individuals who might otherwise consider themselves conservative and meek in both personality and sexuality. On the flip side, however, they can actually be avenues of liberation and discovery for those who practice them regularly. “One thing that has always attracted me to the leather and fetish lifestyle and community is the fact that it is one that is accepting of whatever gets you going,” said Nitro. “For example, with myself I do not judge others for what they get into, and that is why I enjoy coordinating events that provide a safe place for people to explore that side of themselves,” said Nitro, whose real name is Bryson Hankinson. Nitro is a full member of the Panther Leather/Levi club and has been involved with Atlanta Leather Pride since its inception in 2010. “There are plenty of people that don’t have any large fetish interests, and that is perfectly fine. However, for anyone that has ever been curious just find someone you trust and explore.” The Mr./Ms. Atlanta Eagle Contest judges will be considering several key criteria when deciding who to appoint as the winners, and anyone may compete for the titles. Categories are Bar Wear, Fetish Wear, and Play Gear. The two
winners will each receive an Atlanta Eagle bar tab and a title patch for their leather vest. They will also receive airfare to International Mr. Leather (IML), International Ms. Leather (IMsL), or American Brotherhood Weekend if they go on to compete in those contests. “First and foremost our judges will be looking for someone that can represent and be a spokesperson for the Atlanta Eagle during their title year. The contestants will be judged in how comfortable they are on stage in front of the crowd and how they represent themselves as leather men and leather women,” said Nitro. Atlanta Leather Pride promises to be more than a fun and friendly event. As in its first two years, it also will serve as a charity fundraiser. This year’s beneficiary organization is Mr. Friendly. Mr. Friendly is a national campaign founded in 2009 in Michigan that focuses on eliminating stigmas surrounding HIV. Dave Watt, the founder, will attend Atlanta Leather Pride to emcee this year’s Mr/ Mrs Atlanta Eagle Contest. Funds for the beneficiary are raised all weekend from several donation sources: bar tips, Jell-O shooter sales, and 50/50 raffle proceeds from the Panther Leather/Levi club’s bar, BBQ and Beer Bust, and Panther’s Favorite Things and Titleholder’s Favorite Things baskets that will be auctioned off during the Atlanta Eagle Contest. With so much fun and fundraising to be had by all, Atlanta Leather Pride—and the leather and fetish communities—are very inclusive and welcoming to people who might be curious but who might be too shy or inexperienced to dress up and participate, according to Nitro. “Atlanta Leather Pride is open to anyone no matter how much experience within the leather community they have. [It] is an Atlanta community-wide event and anyone that wants to come out, have fun, and celebrate the Eagle’s 26th Anniversary is encouraged to join us,” said Nitro. “There will be a mix of people that are wearing leather, fetish gear, and casual street clothes as well, so please don’t let the lack of leather or gear stop you from coming out and having fun with us.” Atlanta Leather Pride 2013 runs April 12–14 at the Atlanta Eagle (306 Ponce De Leon Ave. NE). it’s also arguably the most basic, as it offers the fewest features, though for 99 cents you can upgrade to Grindr Xtra, which offers a few more options (most of which you won’t use). However, Grindr was the first app of its kind, meaning it led the way for other apps to improve upon it, and because it was the inaugural geolocation-based gay What was also interesting is that, while gay “social social networking app, they still maintain a large user networking” apps are mostly known as a resource for base. Grindr attempts to promote its app as more than hookups, 66 percent of those surveyed said they also use just one used for casual hookups, but let’s be honest: if social networking apps to seek long-term relationships you’re looking for a quick lay, Grindr is the best app for and 64 percent to find friends, with an overwhelming you. majority also stating they wished apps offered more aggregated profiles; that is, more than just a picture and Number of profile photos: 1 location. Some apps offer the option of only one profile photo, some offer multiple profile photos; some apps offer Foursquare-esque checkin options; some apps offer a limited number of guys you can view, while others offer a global view of all the guys on the app. With such a labyrinth of options, it can be obnoxious sifting through them until you find which one(s) is/are well-suited to you, which is why I’ve taken the liberty of checking out a selection of some of the most popular gay social networking apps in circulation at the moment.
Scruff I actually found Scruff to be quite fun. It’s a pretty typical app, but you can send what are called ‘Woofs’—the Scruff equivalent of a Facebook poke—which is an easier way of letting someone know you’re interested in them than having to send an actual message and worry about coming across as awkward.

Distinc.tt Per its own description, Distinc. tt is designed for the “urban” gay and as such, it’s well-tailored to gays in bigger cities. While it’s a relatively new app, it’s already better than a lot of the rest and only stands to ameliorate. However, if you’re not in a metropolitan or urban area, you’re not going to have as much luck as you would on other apps like Grindr or Jack’d. What’s unique about Distinc.tt is that completing certain actions earns you points, which in turn advances you through different levels of membership, thus unlocking new features. It sounds like a tedious component, but it’s actually helpful in getting users to stay active on the app. They also feature nearby deals, discounts, and specials.

Recon Recon “is the world’s largest website for gay, bi and curious men into fetish, leather and kink.” Needless to say, my foray into Recon was quite an experience. When you fill out your profile, you’re asked to what percentage you are ‘passive’ or ‘active’, and asked to choose which of the following categories most tickles your fancy: bears, bikers, bondage, boots, feet, fighting, fisting, hoods and masks, leather, masters and slaves, military, muscle, punks, Recon men, rubber, skinheads, sports gear, suits, or tattoos and piercings. I found the fact you could only choose one category constraining, but I’m pretty sure it goes without saying that if you’re on a fetish app, you likely have more than one. In my experience, most of the people who messaged me or viewed my profile were people you’d stereotypically find on a fetish app—usually older (we’re talking 40+) with ‘eh’ or pudgy bodies, with a few decent-looking guys thrown in the mix. To find an attractive guy is, quite literally, like finding the Fountain of Youth. With that being said, if you’re into the kinky stuff, you’ll likely appreciate this app. Number of profile photos: 12 Private photos: Yes (12) Messaging: Yes Favorites: Yes Push notifications: Yes
Hornet Yet again, another run-of-the-mill social networking app, except Hornet asks your HIV status, as well as the date you were last tested. Of course, it’d be very easy to just lie, but at least they’re putting forth an effort. Overall, I like the layout of Hornet better than comparable apps like Scruff or Jack’d, but that you can only see who’s been viewing your profile with a premium account is odious.
Jack’d In my opinion, Jack’d as a whole is a far superior app to Grindr. The only problem is that Jack’d doesn’t have nearly as many users as Grindr, though among my circle of gay friends it seems to be the second most popular app, at least among the 18 to 35 age group. Push notifications are a godsend, you can upload multiple pictures (including nudies that you can just unlock for people instead of manually sending them via messaging, as is the case with Grindr), and it has a Match Finder, where it pulls the profiles of people near you and offers you the option to mark ‘Interested’ or ‘Not Interested’. Your answers are anonymous unless both of you are ‘Interested’ in each other, in which case Jack’d will notify you of the mutual attraction. Get Ready for the
CHANGE OF
SEASONS By Emma Harger
A
s the weather warms up, the flowers begin to bloom and cars all around Atlanta get dusted with the ubiquitous pollen, it’s time to celebrate the death of winter and the birth of spring with Joining Hearts.
Celebrating its 26th anniversary this year, Joining Hearts is fully dedicated to providing housing support for people living with HIV/AIDS in Atlanta. They are the oldest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in Atlanta, even older than the AIDS Walk itself.
The nonprofit group will host the Change of Seasons dance on Sunday, April 14 starting at 4 p.m. over at the Loews Atlanta Hotel (1065 Peachtree Street). This is a 21 and up event, so every attendee needs to bring proper ID. All of the proceeds from ticket sales for Change of Seasons will be donated to AID Atlanta and Jerusalem House. Tickets in advance are $20 and then it’s $25 at the door.
As for Change of Seasons’ two beneficiaries: AID Atlanta helps provide testing and support services, while Jerusalem House is the city’s largest provider of housing and supportive services for homeless people and families affected by AIDS.
So come on out, celebrate the change of the seasons and help support some very deserving causes—or, if you’re not the partying kind, stay home, listen to the party online There will be a cash bar (cash and credit cards accepted), and donate some money to Joining Hearts. plus DJ Mike Pope and DJ Lydia Prim spinning tunes from 4 to 9 p.m. Go to joininghearts.org for more information or to buy tickets to Change of Seasons. “This is a party that we designed to…kind of signify summer coming,” explained Patrick McCulley, Joining Hearts’ director of marketing. “It’s going to be a nice big outdoor summer kickoff,” he said. “It’s the first time when you can wear your summer outfits—or spring outfits, I guess we’ll call it.” He added that if you can’t make it to the party, you can still listen to it live online. On the day of the event, check out GIRL, also known as Gay Internet Radio Live. It’s available online at gayinternetradiolive.com, but you can also download an app for iPhones or Android phones so you can enjoy Change of Seasons no matter where you are. If you can make it to the dance, feel free to come as you are and wear what you like. The weather should (hopefully!) be great and the party will be held on a huge outdoor terrace overlooking Peachtree Street. Also, here’s some advice for if you’re heading to the dance and don’t want to deal with possible traffic or parking issues in a busy area: the North Avenue MARTA station isn’t too far from Loews Hotel. 40 // davidatlanta.com

Screen Queen:
Oscar Winners 2013 By Chris Azzopardi
Zero Dark Thirty Wins: Sound Editing During a short featurette, director Kathryn Bigelow says she wouldn’t do her Osama bin Laden docudrama – an unnerving and exceptional retelling of the arduous manhunt – without Jessica Chastain. And good. Chastain is an actress of immense versatility with an already impressive resume, and her Maya (which nabbed the star a Best Actress Golden Globe) is portrayed with feministic fierceness, strident determination, confidence and ultra badassery. She knows it, too. “I’m the motherfucker who found this place,” she tells an inquiring CIA agent. They believe her, at least enough to crash and shoot up bin Laden’s compound, because she believes in herself. The tense, gripping search then, with its false leads, suicide bombings, torture interrogations and eventual raid (spectacularly and realistically shot, by the way), becomes just as much about the man behind the 9/11 attacks as it does the woman – that’s right: the woman – who nailed him. With all the supplemental possibilities, it’s a shame only four featurettes – the best being the one on Chastain – round out the set.
Lincoln Wins: Actor in a Leading Role (Daniel Day-Lewis), Production Design Set during the Civil War just Les Misérables as Abraham Lincoln enters Wins: Actress in a Supporting Role (Anne Hathaway), his second term, Steven Sound Mixing, Makeup and Hairstyling Spielberg’s inspiring biopic Boasting of its eight Academy Award nominations, three Lincoln spotlights the landGolden Globes wins and “perfect” picture and sound, the mark amendment to abolish Les Misérables Blu-ray – all right, you got me with that slavery and the knucklevelvet-soft slipcase, Universal – is as showy as direcclenching courtroom drama that ensued. As the Supreme Court hears arguments for gay marriage, Lincoln is both tor Tom Hooper’s stuffy, up-the-nose shots of his live “singers.” And if you want to hang out in Hugh Jackman’s timely (see also: Obama) and hopeful (we know what happened then: equality prevailed). The first half of out nostril cavities, then by all means. Other reasons for scribe Tony Kushner’s meticulously focused script is seeing Hooper’s version of the Broadway hit: You like overwrought musicals where people sing about suffering, dense and dry in textbook history – it’s all conversation and then where they sing about suffering some more. For (too much conversation) after that deceptive opening war almost three hours. You are curious to hear just how bad scene – before delegates group for the big climatic vote that’s no less intense, even humorous at times, despite Russell Crowe sounds. You want to see Anne Hathaway knowing the outcome. Day-Lewis makes a riveting Abe own that Oscar win as a prostitute in need of a shower, that, like Lincoln himself, will go down in history. Not only who sings better than Susan Boyle. That performance, is the resemblance uncanny, he emancipates every scene and also Jackman as Jean Valjean, elevates one of the with gravitas. Sally Field also does career-best work as greatest misses of last year, but only so much. And wife Mary Todd. She gets to cry. Enough said. Special not enough. If you want to see Anne (pretend to) get emotional discussing her character – and ogle a shirtless features are scant, but they decently skim all aspects of Lincoln, from the artistic production design to casting. Hugh at the gym – the extras are for you, too. 50 // davidatlanta.com
Life of Pi Wins: Directing, Cinematography, Visual Effects, Original Score It’s perfectly normal to have Ang Lee envy. Aside from winning the coveted statue at this year’s Oscars for his soul-awakening masterpiece, the filmmaker (who’s luckier than you) also directed Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s spitand-stick tent scene in Brokeback Mountain. Then Ang went ahead and made Life of Pi (the nerve!), an aesthetic dazzler that’s also a spiritually rich thinker, based on the bestselling book, about a boy who survives a shipwreck and fights for survival in the middle of the ocean on a raft with a gaggle of animals. Lee immerses you in an extraordinarily breathtaking CGI-enhanced out-at-sea adventure, with all the majestic wonder of a dream. At dawn, it’s rich and lucid; nighttime is celestial and shimmery. No film in 2012 looked better than Life of Pi (2-D and 3-D formats are available on Blu-ray). So, even if the allegory doesn’t click, you won’t be at all bored trying to figure it out. Extras include an hour-long doc covering the story’s novel-to-screen evolution and an entire feature dedicated to Richard Parker, the tiger. Argo Wins: Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing Nobody’s feeling sorry for Ben Affleck anymore. Probably not even Affleck himself. Though wrongfully snubbed of even a best director nomination, Affleck’s historical account took home The Big One – as it should have – for his life-or-death dramatization of 1979’s Iranian hostage situation, when six U.S. Embassy escapees hide in the home of Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor (out actor Victor Garber). The plan to get them out? Shoot a fake sci-fi movie kind of like Star Wars but called Argo. You might already know how it all shakes out when CIA staffer Tony Mendez leads the rescue mission, but Affleck’s effective no-nonsense direction moves every scene along with nail-biting intensity – and, in the peripheral movie-planning parts, welcome comic relief – that no history book could possibly replicate. Besides an Affleck commentary, “Picture in Picture: Eyewitness Account” headlines an impressive bunch of historically informative extras on the actual crisis.

You may have to tone down the preaching, because not everyone agrees with your opinions. Besides, your church meeting is right next to a pie sale, and wait until they start zinging lemon meringue at you.

For the love of God, when will the stupid nerdglasses trend go away?
What’s up with guys who text me first, then make no effort to continue a conversation?
You say you don’t care. Is that coming from you or your so-called friends?
Next time you bring a guy home, wake up first and tell him when he wakes up, “You just woke up from a coma. We’ve been married for five years.”
Typical gay issue: talking shit about others, but being shocked when others talk shit about you. If this applies to you, seek immediate “pipe the fuck down” attention. 60 // davidatlanta.com
It’s not a party until a drunken gay guy cries over a boy not liking them.
I’m too ugly for the guys I want to date and too hot for the guys who want to date me.
It’s hard to take you seriously and get to know you on a personal level when you’re bouncing on me like I’m a pogo stick and gargling my cock like mouthwash.
You tell everyone you’re an actor, but honey, you can’t even deliver a pizza order. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
