WHY TAKE THE SURVEY

Political and Social Inclusivity and Equality

Funding Community Events and Charities

LGBT studies have opened doors (and minds) in leading corporations and organizations, which in turn have recognized the value of their LGBT employees through the establishment of equal hiring policies and domestic partner benefits. This has been a catalyst, leading to sweeping changes in political and social inclusivity.

Beyond simply advertising, though, these companies support us in many ways, including sponsoring community events and funding community-based charities in order to earn our loyalty.

Keep LGBT Publications and Websites in Business Demographic reports also influence marketing investment. Virtually absent until recently, we now see a growing variety of a products and services represented in LGBT media, celebrating our diversity. Ads keep LGBT publications and websites in business, serving their communities with independent news and information.

Taking an annual pulse on market trends through surveys helps demonstrate the LGBT community’s growing power, and influences positive change. Everyone who completes the survey by June 30, 2013 may enter into a drawing to win one of five US $100 cash prizes, or designate a non-profit charity to receive the prize. NATIONAL AD REP

Knowing Our History

ith Atlanta Pride making June its Stonewall Month, it’s an appropriate time to learn more about our community, whether it’s locally, nation-

ally or globally.

It’s something that’s important to me, because as a community, we have to be proactive about our history. Other minority groups in our country tend to be raised in households that acknowledge their pasts. For the vast majority of LGBT people, that simply isn’t the case. So what can you do to find out more about queer history? Stonewall Month’s a good place to start. Check out our list of activities for Stonewall Month going on this week on page 38. With Pride,

Pride A-Plenty LGBT Festivals Cover the Southeast in 2013

BY VAN GOWER

20 // davidatlanta.com

J

une is perhaps the one month of the year that LGBT’s look forward to more than any other. Known popularly by different titles—Pride Month; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month; Stonewall History Month—June is without a doubt our month to shine in all our rainbow-colored gay glory. It’s our month to make a unified, formal declaration of our pride in who we are, who we love, and what we stand for. The many Pride festivals taking place around the world will be absolutely fabulous testaments to that declaration. Of course, being folks who love a great party, the LGBT community will be throwing countless uninhibited soirees to counterpoint the more serious activism and historical aspects of the month. Many Pride events will combine all these elements.

June 5–9 • El Paso, TX Well, pardners, Texas sure is proving to be a surprise. In this rundown of Pride festivals in the Southeast, we highlight not one but three gay Pride festivals in the Lone Star State. The first one, El Paso Sun City Pride, is five days of affiliated events and parties, including a June 6 official launch party and a June 7 dance. The parade and street festival get busy on Saturday, June 8. Entertainment headliners this year include sex god rapper Cazwell and transgendered multi-hyphenate entertainer Amanda Lepore.

Key West Pride

This week, we take an overview of Pride events taking place in the country throughout June, with a special emphasis on those in the Southeast. Any of these would be ideal to tide Atlanta gays over until Atlanta Pride opens on October 12. Of course, be sure to check all the festivals’ website or Facebook pages, where applicable, for news and schedule updates.

Central Alabama Pride

June 5–9 • Key West, FL • keywestpride.org As Key West Pride’s website proclaims, “Street Fair, Pride Parade, Pool Parties, Dance Parties, Sunset Sails, Comedy, Film and so much more! All set on a tropical island that is legendary for its laid back style and its open and accepting atmosphere.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Razzle Dazzle Festival June 2–9 • Birmingham, AL • centralalabamapride.org Eight days of Pride includes casual social events like a picnic, bowling, skating, and bingo in locations across Birmingham, culminating in a parade on June 8 and the big festival on June 9.

El Paso Sun City Pride

June 6–9 • Dallas, TX • razzledazzledallas.org Remember the old joke about Texas that the only things there are steers and queers? Well, the joke is officially no longer a putdown. In fact, there may be just as many queers in Texas as there are ten-gallon hats, and Razzle Dazzle Festival in Dallas is proof of that. On June 7, disco legend Thelma Houston performs at Metroball, one of many very gay attractions worth taking in, with the main event festival on June 8. @DavidAtlantaGA // 21

Nashville Pride Festival

rival Atlanta Pride in popularity. Check them out on their website, Facebook, and Twitter for updates about events schedule and entertainment.

Pride San Antonio

June 15 • Nashville, TN • nashvillepride.org One might not think the conservative country music capital of Nashville would be a safe environment for a big, bold gay Pride festival, but in fact it’s one of the most entertaining and popular ones in the U.S., certainly in the Southeast. And there are a number of official celebrations in the week leading up to the big festival—they include a June 9 Nashville Pride Pageant; a June 12 Spirituality Night; and, on June 13, Curb Records presents Pride Rocks! Pre-Party.

South Carolina Black Pride

June 29 • San Antonio, TX • pridesanantonio.org Gay-inclusive, diverse, and artsy—what’s not to love about San Antonio, Texas? Well, consider Pride San Antonio, the annual day-long gay block party that includes a high heel race and caps off with a nighttime parade. This year’s theme? “Pride Bigger Than Texas.”

St. Pete Pride Street Festival & Promenade June 29 • St. Petersburg, FL • stpetepride.com St. Petersburg, Florida, is a big, beautiful, sunny metropolis and a perennial tourist hot spot in the Tampa Bay area. Nicknamed “The Sunshine City,” St. Pete is a perfect locale for a big, bright Pride festival that includes ample vendors, organizations, food, drinks, and entertainment. Check the website for schedule updates.

Savannah Pride Sept. 14 • Savannah, GA • facebook.com/savpride Okay, so we’re including an event that doesn’t take place until September, but no roster of Pride throwdowns in Georgia would be complete without mentionJune 19–23 • Columbia, SC • southcarolinablacking Savannah Pride. Savannah has a rich, mysterious, pride.com The African-American LGBT community of South Carolina evocative cultural history—both respectable and notorious. For our money, the annual Savannah Pride makes Pride their own with five days of togetherness, festival leans to the respectable. We think. We do awareness, and fun activities. know that Savannah’s LGBT’s are out, proud, and always ready for a fabulous party. Make your plans now Augusta Pride to head down in September to join the fun. June 21–22 • Augusta, GA • prideaugusta.org With a theme of “Proud 365,” Augusta Pride might even 22 // davidatlanta.com

All Hail ‘The Kin By Elijah Sarkesian

C

oming-of-age films are a staple of the format, and this summer sees a quirky new addition to the category with The Kings of Summer, which comes out in Atlanta June 7. The Kings of Summer follows teenager Joe (Nick Robinson, Melissa & Joey), who finds himself in an increasingly difficult relationship with his widowed father. He decides to start a new life in the woods with his best friend, Patrick (Gabriel Basso, The Big C), who’s also feeling smothered by his parents. The two boys, along with oddball tagalong Biaggio (Moises Arias, Hannah Montana) build their own house in the middle of the woods and learn about life over the course of the summer. The film, which was picked up by CBS Films after a highly popular screening at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, is succeeding where many independent films have failed: connecting to a wide audience. This isn’t lost on the stars of the film, all of whom have a wide range of credits to their names.

“I’ve done so many independent films that nobody knows of. It’s really fantastic to be involved with something you believe in,” says Arias, who signed onto the film while making the big-budget Ender’s Game, releasing later this year. “For it to even make it to Sundance, one, is amazing. A lot of films don’t even make it to Sundance, and to get compared to Stand By Me is just ridiculous. This has heart, it’s funny, it’s dramatic, beautiful—a wide variety of adjectives can describe this movie.” What drew each of the leads in was the script. According to Robinson, “It really captured what it’s like to be 15, to be in that weird place between adulthood and childhood.” Arias adds, “Normally, I don’t read for anything while I’m working. But they sent me the sides, and the sides made me laugh my ass off. It was just a genius script. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.” The humor of the script is brought to life by the leads,

ngs of Summer’ but some of the film’s funniest moments come from comedy pros like Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace), and Allison Brie (Community). Because of the improv background of many of the film’s supporting cast, the three leads went through an improv class. “We’re working with some of the funniest people on the planet,” says Arias. “Nick Offerman is one of the funniest people I’ve ever encountered. Jordan [Vogt-Roberts, the film’s director] knows a lot of improvisers and brought them in for cameos. He wanted us on our toes.” When asked to describe working with the seasoned comedy veterans, Robison found it “Intimidating at first. Nick Offerman is Nick Offerman. He’s Ron Swanson in real life. But once you get to know the guy, he’s a real teddy bear. But it was amazing. I learned more on set than I did in the improv class just by watching him work.”

made working difficult, though. “All of the scenes were difficult because they were flippin’ hilarious. I couldn’t keep a straight face,” says Robinson. Basso pointed to one particular scene that was difficult for him. “The dinner scene where I’m attempting to eat while Marc and Megan are being genius, it was so tough to get through. Honestly, they’re so funny. And they would sit there, and every other second Megan would give a brilliant joke, and I’d have to eat my burger to attempt to not laugh.” Arias had the most difficult time: “It’s worse for me, because my face can’t leave from—[mimics deadpan facial expression from the film]—that. I can’t lift an eyebrow. I can’t smile. That was the toughest part.” “And the minute he breaks, we both break,” adds Robinson.

The classes and various takes helped them develop improv skills. All three acknowledge that the improv also Basso faced an additional challenge during the shooting: @DavidAtlantaGA // 27

Patrick is wearing a medical boot on his foot throughout “Yeah, give us some credit there,” chimes in Basso. the film, including during the shots in the woods. “But yeah, definitely one of the most memorable experi“Yeah, it inhibited my movement. It was extremely gross ences I’ve had as an actor,” concludes Arias. by the end of [the shoot]. It got really sweaty and muddy, and every other disgusting adjective you can think of could be used to describe the boot,” says Basso. “Half of the stuff I did was probably actually impossible for a kid whose foot was actually injured, but for me, it was just difficult trying to keep my balance. The bottom of that thing was flat plastic, so when these guys were running around on slippery rocks, I was just trying to keep up with them.” All in all, though, all three acknowledge that this was one of the most entertaining and memorable films they’ve worked on. “It was one of the most fun [times] I’ve had shooting a film,” Arias says. “We were all there for the love of the craft. We believed in the script. What made the movie, I think, is Jordan’s ability to take b-roll and just make it coincide with the actual script, like the big pipe scene was improvised. We just went into the woods with the DP, the director, the writer and us three guys, and we started fucking around with sticks and jumping off stuff, and it just led to me getting on this pipe and doing these tribal dances—“ “Accompanied by our beats,” adds Robinson.

Datebook Stonewall Events

Following the move of Atlanta Pride to October in 2008, the Atlanta Pride Committee has hosted various events in June surrounding the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. While 2009–2011’s events were held over one week, 2012 saw the series of Stonewall events expand to a full month. That new tradition continues this year. Here’s a look at what’s going on this week for Stonewall Month:

Dine Out for Pride Wednesday, June 5; Monday, June 10; Wednesday, June 12 • 5–10 p.m. • Various Locations Want to support Atlanta Pride while you’re eating out this week? Multiple restaurants are donating a portion of their proceeds on certain days to Atlanta Pride. On June 5, Doc Chey’s Noodle House in Grant Park will donate a percentage of all dine-in and carryout sales to Atlanta Pride. If you miss that date, the Doc Chey’s by Emory will be doing the same thing on June 12. Meanwhile, on June 12, mention Dine Out for Pride while dining at any Communitas Hospitality restaurant—Gilbert’s, Hobnob and 10th & Piedmont—and they will donate a percentage of your bill. This repeats weekly on Monday nights throughout June.

Stonewall 101 Thursday, June 6 • 7 p.m. • Phillip Rush Center (1530 Dekalb Ave.) Touching Up Our Roots, Love Under Fire and Atlanta Pride present an informative look at the basics surrounding Stonewall.

IN THEATRES THIS WEEK Some of the funniest comedic talent working these days, including Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and Allison Brie, play supporting roles to the three young boys who make up The Kings of Summer. The film was a huge hit when it played at Sundance earlier this year, and for good reason—it’s one of the flat-out funniest films to hit screens in recent years. Newcomers Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso and Moises Arias play the titular characters, all searching for a way to escape their parents and jump into adulthood.

ALSO IN THEATRES The Internship: Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson team up again in a two-hour informercial for Google. From what we’ve been told, the film’s also a comedy. The Purge: In the future, society is peaceful 364 days a year. One night a year, though, people can do whatever they want without consequence. Question: why are the people in the trailer wearing masks if they can get away with anything? Stories We Tell: Oscar-nominee Sarah Polley plays with the documentary format as she interviews a family of storytellers, getting a variety of answers that don’t always mesh. @DavidAtlantaGA // 39

Spark of Fate THE

By Nicholas Grant

photos: BreeAnne Clowdus 44 // davidatlanta.com

F

ive years ago Brian Clowdus was a graduate student from the University of South Carolina who was visiting his family in Atlanta when a trip to Serenbe caused a spark to ignite is his brain. Thanks to that spark, and Clowdus’ unparalleled and unending passion, the Atlanta theatre community has been enjoying a renaissance of creativity over the past four theatrical seasons. If you haven’t ventured OTP south to the community known as Serenbe, it should quickly rise to the top of your summer to do list. Located about 30 minutes south of the city Serenbe is a 1,000-acre the community serves as a model of achievements in quality, environmentally friendly living. One of the community’s main focuses is fostering the arts and when Clowdus had the desire to found a professional theatre company knows as the Serenbe Playhouse, the community rallied around him and his vision. That support shows no signs of stopping anytime in the near, or distant future. “The first year we performed outside out of necessity,” Clowdus explains. That necessity quickly became the organizations cornerstone; presenting exciting and daring theatrical productions outside, utilizing Serenbe’s lush natural green spaces. “That’s all people were talking about; cutting edge theatre outdoors. So after season two we changed our mission statement to be an outdoor site-specific theatre company.” Creating exciting theatre every summer, and finding outdoor spaces that help to tell the story being presenting is daunting to say the least. Clowdus, who is openly gay and somehow single, knows how to work hard, but that allows him to play hard too. “It’s really intense, I literally say I’m married to my job. But I think that’s why the playhouse has been so successful. “ In 2011 Clowdus was named one of Atlanta’s most eligible bachelors, and the only gay man to achieve that status, by Jezebel. “Yes, I definitely want to be in love, I want that spark. But the people in my life, my family and friends, and my work, fulfill me. So it’s not like there is a void. It’s a hard life for someone to accept. If you’re not on the same scheduled you may not get [working in theatre]. “There is this hopeless romantic part of me that continues walking around, just waiting to bump into someone. I know it’s not a reality, but I always remain hopeful. I’m hopeful, that’s my thing. But I’m not bored these days. “I’m going to get Hallmark cheesy, but I’m a strong believer in fate.”

His attitude with love is strikingly similar to his outlook on work. Clowdus admits that starting the playhouse in Serenbe was perfect timing. He had lived in New York City, working as a professional actor before attending grad school. “I feel like I got burned out in New York, and decided I wanted to come back to the South east to pursue grad school. I ended up coming to see my sister and we visited Serenbe and I got a gut feeling. If I hadn’t proposed it, someone else would have swooped in and done it. It was just the right timing. I listened to my guy, I had a feeling and I worked my ass off. “That’s what art is. I think it’s so sad when I see artists that aren’t putting that effort into it. You can be a good artist, but if you don’t have a good business head about you, you’re screwed. You have got to balance the business with the art.” @DavidAtlantaGA // 45

This balancing act is an ongoing challenge, but one that is met head on. Staging a production of The Ugly Duckling a few season ago in a pond is seen by most observers at the moment that the Serenbe Playhouse made its mark on the Atlanta arts scene. Clowdus bases each season around a theme, and this summer audiences can experience “A Season of Change” with productions of The Velveteen Rabbit, A Walk in the Woods and HAIR. Not afraid to take on shows that touch on a gauntlet of subjects, the Serenbe Playhouse doesn’t shy away from productions appealing to gay audiences either. During the playhouses’ inaugural season, Clowdus mounted Shakespeare’s R & J, an all male play embracing the essence of the classic love story, and giving it a new dimension for modern audiences. 46 // davidatlanta.com

“Serenbe has a lot of buzz from the gay community. We opened the HRC dinner this year. Gay people love to do fabulous things, so Serenbe is the perfect community. “The Velveteen Rabbit actually has a lot of themes that I think resonate within the gay community. What makes real love, accepting yourself, reinventing yourself. The Velveteen Rabbit is the little outcast in the toy world, but someone loves him for who he is and he embraces it.” The playhouse has no plans to build a traditional theatre space. Audiences have loved the experience of a moonlight night acting as a natural backdrop for the productions, and it is what makes the Serenbe experience one of a kind. For audience members who may be curious, or concerned - in the playhouse’s history only two productions have been cancelled due to bad weather. When rain

clouds are on the horizon, the Serenbe community rallies around and finds alternate venues to house the productions for the evening. They offer a smaller version of the planned performance and invite guests back for the full scale spectacle when mother nature is more willing to cooperate. It seems that Clowdus thrives for challenges. Until a few months ago he was the only employee of the organization, but due to an explosion of popularity that is no longer the case. Employees, interns, performers, volunteers and the entire Serenbe family come together each summer to dazzle and amaze audiences. “I feel like, in the vein of fate, I’ve been very fortunate with the opportunities I’ve had and so it’s like ‘be patient” and if a part of my life is supposed to happen, it will happen naturally. I’m not saying you can’t be proactive, but it’s not something that I am going to get super stressed out about. I would like to date though, and I do have Monday nights off.” For information on all productions and tickets, visit serenbeplayhouse.com.

Margaret Cho Supports Atlanta’s Gay Comedians

A

s soon as I got home from performing, I do what I always do. I untuck (for me, that’s take off my super tight crouch grabbing dance belt), take my glitter off, eat (usually I have the munchies), then I get somewhere and “sat down!” But tonight, the first thing I did once I got home was sat down and reflected on what just happened. What had happened was, as soon as I arrived at my Thursday night show at the Laughing Skull, the manager told me “ Margaret Cho is performing on your show tonight”. I was like, “YES MA’AM,” and immediately posted on Facebook that she’s going to be there. Cho was very nice to me; she told me to place her wherever I needed her on the line up…but after the first act, she said she wanted to go next so she could watch the show. She pretty much laughed at all my jokes, called me a “genius” (shut up), and insisted on tying the loose laces on one of my stiletto boots. It was like I was in one of my and more stand up these days. He was also on my show weird ass dreams, but the good kind. that night and had folks in stiches. For example, when she told me she was going to host The View on June 19, I blurted out “Ooh, I wanna be on that show,” and she said, “I’ll get you on”. You’re probably thinking what I was thinking: “Yeah, right.”

I don’t think Margaret realizes just by her being there has been the “charge” that I needed. It gets hard sometimes always pumping shows and performing pretty much every night and sometimes feeling like I’m still at Start. Her presence and good energy gave me the pat on the back I needed to keep going.

There were other ‘dreamy’ promises made that I don’t want to get into, but she did make sure the next day I was a guest on her new podcast show with her funny Okay, that’s enough reflecting; time to take this glitter Australian comedian friend, Jim Short. I was already a fan off and get untucked. Until next time, go support gay of Margaret, now I love that whore! comedy! And it’s not just me, she supported other gay comedians in this town like Ian Aber and from 99X, Gay Bob. Those two were on her podcast as well and she invited all three of us back to the Laughing Skull to perform with her for the rest of the weekend. Ian hosts his own comedy show once a month at The Jungle and Gay Bob is doing more 52 // davidatlanta.com

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19): You’re willing to run over a few pedestrians in your drive for success. That makes you a high insurance risk. It’s good to be ambitious, but at what cost? They may remember you later when they’re in their Hummers, chasing you down in your little Miata.

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): A past mistake may be resurrected, but does lightning strike twice? An ex-boyfriend’s sentimental feelings may have you reverting, i.e. heading backwards. Been there, done that, is no direction to take. Thumb your nose at the past and skip gleefully into the future.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Being slow moving

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Respect

today will not be a bad thing. It’ll also make you meticulous and attentive to details. So let everyone race around you, rushing by at breakneck speed. At the end of day you’ll have gotten more done than them, and you’ll barely break a sweat.

opposing ideas and you can gain better insight into your own. But spurn and ridicule them and you’ll get a reputation for being unyielding and difficult to connect with. It’ll be easier for everyone to come together, and you may learn a lesson in community in the process.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20): The end of the week was tough and hard-boiled, like something out of Mickey Spillane novel. You needed to be a scrapper to wrestle through it, but you have no problem with getting a little dirty. There’s a guy out there who will be more than willing to clean you up today.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Whether to save your money or blow it all on frivolity will be your big question of the day. The answer will dictate the quality of your weekend. It would be prudent to lay low at home, but you’ll heed the call of the wild. Money will be no object as you charge through the weekend.

CANCER (June 21- July 22): You’ll want nothing

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): You’ll

more than to step away from people problems today. That could be a predicament, as they’ll loom everywhere. Curling into the fetal position isn’t going to help, so you may as well address them. ‘Tis better to deal with them today, and start next week with a clean slate.

witness the positive outcome of your plans today. So prepare to be energized by supreme satisfaction. This will make you quite a handful later in the evening, when you make an entrance with the swaggering selfconfidence of a rock star.

LEO (July 23 – August 22): People can’t help but

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Before you

notice your finely honed physique since you’re always pointing it out to them. Or wearing something skimpy that shows it off. Like Narcissus, you could become your own worst enemy. The purpose of building the perfect bod is not to chase people away.

concoct your grandiose plans to coerce your pals into helping you with that home improvement project, take heed: Trying to work with anyone else today will be like herding cats. You’ll want them under your thumb, doing your bidding, but they have minds of their own and they will be using them.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): It could be time to think about whether or not you’re interested in dipping your pen in the company ink. He’s smart, he’s focused, he’s just perfectly disheveled and obviously in need of some tender organization on your part. If you’re game to mix business with pleasure, call him up this weekend and ask him out.

PISCES (February 19 – March 19): You’ve never been impressed with the trappings of your friends in high places. It all seems so material. You prefer to keep things a little earthier. It’s a nice place to visit, but you’ll be happy down below in your home today. You’d get dizzy from being that high all the time.

You should at least wear a jockstrap under your workout shorts. Such a small appendage really isn’t cute on such a big guy like you!

Just because you’ve seen my dick doesn’t mean we’re having sex.

There’s a reason you never have a boyfriend, and it’s not every other guy. It’s you.

Here’s an idea: let’s move all of Atlanta’s adult businesses as close to Alex Wan as possible.

It might take strength and stamina to be a top, but it takes endurance to be a bottom. Disney princesses don’t have to leave their beds to find a boyfriend, so why should I? 60 // davidatlanta.com

“Bottom” line? Why can’t there be a “Top” line? Oh…because they don’t make those in Atlanta.

Friends with benefits > friends.

All the working out in the world won’t fix your face.

Get over yourself, pretty gym boy. When you start acknowledging my existence at least once for every five times I say hello, then I’ll stop treating you like a dick. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
