Nothing Christ-Like About Ejection
F
ollowing the Boy Scouts’ decision to allow for gay members (but not gay troop leaders), Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta publicly kicked out and severed ties Troop 204. Pastor Ernest Easley received a standing ovation upon delivering the news to his congregation. Now, he’s making the story as public as possible in an effort to get other churches to do the same. Thanks to growing up as a preacher’s kid in the Southern Baptist church, I went to Easley’s church multiple times growing up. Hearing the disgusting, hateful words coming from Easley’s mouth through interviews, I can’t imagine letting my child anywhere near him.

What many people like Easley tend to forget is which crowds Jesus associated himself with, according to the Bible. Here’s a hint: they weren’t usually the ones accepted by society. The very people Easley and his congregation are quick to rush out the door are the ones Jesus preferred to be around. Assuming there is a heaven (I won’t speculate one way or another here), Easley might find himself in for a rude awakening one day.

THE RETURN OF
Atlanta’s Hottest Circuit Party Marks Second Year of Events By Daniel Jones
A
fter an amazing inaugural year in June 2012, Peach a hint of nepotism when it came to choosing this year’s Party returns with an even bigger arrangement of lineup. They felt it was important to feature the talent that DJs and events, including a free party in Piedmont has been with them throughout the years. Park with superstar DJ/producer Tony Moran headlining. “You always want to give back to who takes care of you,” said Young. So what is Peach Party and why do we have it? “Originally, the idea came because when I first moved to Atlanta, I didn’t see a lot of tourism traffic as far as the gay circuit community went,” said Keith Young, creator of Peach Party and GA Boy Productions. “It was a lot of local people, and the summer in Atlanta shouldn’t really be like that. And since obviously Atlanta Pride isn’t in the summer any longer, I think that leaves a huge gap for Atlanta and for the community.”
With such talented and widely recognized DJ/Producers as Paulo and Alyson Calagna on their side, who can really blame them? They are also giving newer local talents like DJ Corey David and drag performer Evah Destruction the opportunity to shine on a national level.
For only being in its second year, Peach Party has quite an impressive queue of DJs and entertainers. So what is the future of this event? Young says he hopes for it to Creator of Carioca Productions and Peach Party contribu- grow at least twice in size, giving opportunity for other tor Fernando Jardim adds, “I’ve always been an advocate satellite parties that will compliment the weekend. “I’d like it to be something people look forward to every year.” for Pride being in June, because it’s a perfect weekend weather-wise and circuit-wise for Pride weekend, but somehow we haven’t been able to make that happen. DJ David
Knapp By Van Gower
F
or any party, there are certain ingredients that are essential to making the mix successful. The right guests, the right atmosphere, the right entertainment – all of these can make or break a soiree. When it comes to a gay party in particular, the single most important and compelling factor that ties everything together is the DJ. So when one thinks of superstar DJ’s who never fail to keep the boys coming back to the dance floor time and time again, David Knapp consistently comes to mind. Knapp has been in the upper echelon of the DJ community for more than 20 years. He helped to pioneer the character and energy of the South Beach, Miami club scene in its foundational years. Knapp has also presided in the booths of such legendary nightspots and events as Amnesia Tea Dances in South Florida, Limelight in New York City, Disney’s Gay Days, Provincetown’s Fourth of July parties, and many, many more. Knapp brings his star power to Atlanta on June 16 for Peach Party Atlanta’s brunch at Las Margaritas. David Atlanta reached out to Knapp to reminisce about his beginnings and get a sneak preview of his Peach Party gig. Are you openly gay? Yes. I started dj-ing in the very early days of South Beach and was out from the start. Where do you hail from originally? Was growing up there easy for you? Like so many of us, did you feel out of place and too creatively fabulous to be contained by your hometown? I was raised in Southern California, in Orange County, in the heyday of punk and new wave. It was actually very cool to experiment with individual styles, though not totally accepting of gayness. That being said, I always felt very much at home with the music. When did you first get started as a DJ?
22 // davidatlanta.com
Because of my love of music, I started out as the DJ on campus at the University of Tampa. From then, I went on to Law School at University of Miami and settled in South Beach. I sold records to all the DJs of South Beach at Yesterday & Today. It was there that I met and became friendly with my first DJ inspiration, Danny Tenaglia. Danny gave me my first job in South Beach at his club. From there I kept playing the South Beach clubs, including Amnesia and Kremlin. I assumed the post of the Miami White Party in 1992 and played it for a record 11 years. These days, you live in Atlanta. Do you get to spend much down time here, given how busy you are?
On the flip side of the hectic pace that sweeps you along and keeps you so busy in the studio and on the road, is there ever time to nurture and maintain a relationship in your line of work? I think that, with any work that has you travelling and working weird hours, it can be hard to nurture a relationship. It really depends on what you want, but you are, in some way, married to your career when you are trying to establish and maintain yourself as a top tier DJ. What do you prefer most: producing and remixing in the studio, or getting out among the party crowds and pumping up the energy at a venue?
I love it all. There is nothing like getting into the studio and debuting your own, very hot mix for your crowds. I have also Many people don’t realize that I live here in Atlanta. henever a circuit party comes to town, the roster of DJ’s performing is almost an embarrassment of riches. For Peach Party 2013, which cranks out the high energy June 14–16, that’s certainly no exception. And one of the star soundmakers is none other than DJ Paulo. Paulo, a native of Portugal, specializes in tribal-injected house music that is laced with prominent veins of hypnotic vocals. When Paulo takes his act on the road and spins for his legions of appreciative fans, whether stateside or abroad, he sets the bar high for his contemporaries who share the bill.
his craft and what Atlanta boys can expect from his June 15 set at Jungle. Based on your own experiences or the experiences of others, what is life like—both socially and politically—for gays in Portugal? Is it open and accepting? I left Portugal when I was 10 so it’s been a while. Gay marriage is legal there, which is surprising for a Catholic country. In Portugal, like some of the Latin countries (Spain, Italy, etc), it’s really not that big of a deal.
When did you first get started as a DJ? I love Atlanta and the boys (and some girls) are Beatport, ITunes, on my Soundcloud and Podomatic. All always out to support me—love them! the links are up on my site. What are some of the most challenging aspects of being a circuit DJ? Also, is it difficult to gauge the beat preferences and musical tastes of different audiences or cultures around the world? Well first of all, I don’t necessarily consider myself a “circuit DJ” as that implies I only spin “circuit parties” and I actually play more “club events” (i.e. Viva in NYC) than circuit parties (White Party, Winter Party etc). Circuit parties tend to be more “anthem” based, thus I play accordingly. In certain countries (i.e. in Brazil) the boys like their beats faster than in the US whereas other cities (i.e. Tokyo) they like it slower. The key is to know your audience and play accordingly. I will play very different at an afterhours than I do main event—while keeping it always staying true to my sound. All the original productions that I do are the backbone of all my sets.
What criteria do you use in deciding which other artists’ songs that you’ll remix? What’s your creative process for reworking the songs once you take them on? I love good vocals, but they’re so hard to find—I’m not into some of the cheesy pop mixes out there. Many times I try to find the a cappella, as I just did with the Kelly Clarkson, and do my own mix. If it’s a good afterhours track I’m after, then that’s when I go for more percussion-based productions (i.e. Lula, etc.). As i mentioned, you’ll be in Atlanta on June 15 to spin at the Peach Party’s Peach Ball at Jungle. Can you tease us a little about what all the guys can expect to hear?
I wanted to remix something classic but with my twist on it, so I just finished a remix of “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You” by Angie Stone. Halleloo! Shangela Makes Her Way to Atlanta
By Elijah Sarkesian
H
The night before, one of the guys couldn’t go on, so they ere at David Atlanta, we’ve interviewed a number of contestants from RuPaul’s Drag Race, but it’s hard to asked if I could fill in. So I did. Someone had shoes, someone think of one doing as many different things career-wise had makeup, and—boom—Shangela was born. as Shangela. Having appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race in its second and third seasons, would you take anFrom a start as a choreographer, Shangela (a.k.a. D.J. other go at the show? Say, for another incarnation Pierce) moved into drag in what was originally a one-time of All-Stars? performance. Five months later, Shangela was on the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, where she was the first queen eliminated. In a surprise twist, though, Shangela I love the show, and I love what it’s done for all of the conwas brought back for the third season, making it all the way testants who have been on it so far. After going back both to the 11th episode of the season. times, I would definitely go back another time. I just feel like I’ve grown, and continue to show that growing process and Pierce also has a different persona, Laquifa, who specifically journey to my fans. I’d just do it for my fans. At this point, you performs comedy. Between Shangela, Laquifa, and Pierce, a know, I’m just so happy with where my career has taken off. slew of credits in popular TV programs and films have piled I continue to work, and work hard. So would I go back to the show? Yes, of course. Would I have to think about it first? up in recent years. And on top of that, there’s still time for live performances from Shangela, like her upcoming appear- Probably a little bit. When you put yourself in that environment, in a drag competition, it’s based on a lot of different ance at Burkhart’s June 20–21. criteria. But yes, I would give it a shot. In the midst of a busy schedule, Shangela had time to speak with David Atlanta about getting her start in drag, Drag Race, What is the origin of “halleloo”? and everything she’s been doing since. I’ve always said “halleloo,” just as a part of my own being. You can say it started in the church. I grew up Southern How did you get your start in drag? Baptist, in Parix, TX with my grandma. But really, it’s how I actually fell into drag a little over three years ago, nearly I live my life. You know, every day is positive-thinking. You don’t say “halleloo” when something bad goes down. I didn’t four years now. I was choreographing a “Single Ladies” know it was going to catch on the way that it did, and then it performance for these three guys at a bar in Los Angeles.

ended up being on the 2010 LA Times “Top 10 Words from Reality TV,” right in between “GTL” [from Jersey Shore] and “prostitution whore” [from The Real Housewives of New Jersey]. You have a new DVD out, Laquifa is Halleloosin’ It! Can you tell me a little more about the project?
You also were in last night’s episode of America’s Got Talent. Can you talk about that experience? All I can say is that I did audition for America’s Got Talent. I had an amazing time, and I was so excited to see my death drop be featured in the premiere promo. What else is coming up for you in the near future?
It’s a DVD of a stand-up comedy show that I did in New York City at XL Nightclub. It’s a one-hour show, and it also has a number of bonus features, including never-before-seen footage from behind the scenes of “Werqin’ Girl,” as well as the music video, plus a still photo gallery. It’s a ho-ishly good time. I talk about my journey as Laquifa, from the beginning of Drag Race until now. It was just fun, it was a great audience, and we thought it would be a good idea to put it on DVD for fans around the world.
It’s Pride season, so I’m everywhere. Everywhere from Toronto Pride and New York City Pride to LA Pride. I mean, I’m just going all over. This summer’s a very busy one for me, but honey, as Laquifa and Shangela always say, I came to werq. Plus, I’m excited to continue filming a lot of stuff and auditioning, and continuing my journey. I’m just so grateful I have family and friends to support me along my journey.
What can fans of yours expect when you come to You’ve also released a few singles, “Call Me Burkhart’s later this month? Laquifa” and “Werqin’ Girl.” Any plans for another single (or more) soon? I can tell you that I’m bringing the best high-energy performance that Laquifa and Shangela have been known for, and You know, a great way to connect with fans is through they should expect high energy stage performance, a lot of music. Now, I’m no Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston—we fun, some stand-up comedy—I’m going to do it all. So for all know that. But I do have a particular sound that I think this triumphant return to Atlanta, I’m going to bring down the my fans have an attachment to, so I have a new song house. called “Turn the Party.” I’ve worked with a producer named Christopher CJ Emmons. He also worked with me on Shangela appears at Burkhart’s, in partnership with “Werqin’ Girl.” It’s coming out late summer. Bubbles Salon and Plaza Theatre, June 20 at 11:30 p.m. and June 21 at 11 p.m. For more information, visit You’ve appeared on a number of television proburkharts.com. grams over the past few years, including scripted programs like Glee, Community, 2 Broke Girls and The Mentalist. What’s it like working on these different programs? The reason I moved to Los Angeles was to work as an actor, and I’m just so happy that I’ve been able to do that through roles on television, whether it’s in drag or out of drag. I also work as a comedian out of drag. So I’m kind of dual-tasking it here, and I’m having the time of my life. Acting and working in this industry—you’ve got to have a really tough skin. You can feel like you’re the best at something, go in, and you’re not the person for that day. I’ve had tons of auditions, and I’ve just been fortunate to get good work. I actually did a role in drag in a new film that’s coming out this summer, R.I.P.D. with Kevin Bacon and Ryan Reynolds. However, you won’t see me, because the scene itself ended up getting cut. Thank God I still get the residuals, halleloo. You’ve just got to be set up for that kind of situation that may happen, but that’s the industry. And to work with great people like Sarah Jessica Parker, and all these amazing casts, it’s just mind-blowing. @DavidAtlantaGA // 47

COME ALONG
WITH VICCI BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN
E
ven though it’s crushing American Idol in the ratings, The Voice has yet to find its own superstar. That may be changing now that Vicci Martinez is gaining some steam at radio.
All right. Now, the song itself is a cover: Why did you choose to cover the song, and why did you choose it to be the lead single from your album?
Her catchy single, “Come Along,” was originally released in May 2012, but it’s just now getting airplay. In our exclusive one-on-one interview, we discuss recording her major-label debut, the growth of “Come Along,” being out while on The Voice, and which coach she has a major crush on.
I worked with Peter Svensson, who was one of the writers of “Come Along,” and we worked on and wrote a few songs together. As we were hanging out, he played it for me and I fell in love with it and I kind of was just kind of like—either copy the song [laughs], or redo it. It didn’t get much play in the U.S., so I thought it’d be a cool thing to try out.
Let’s talk about your single “Come Along”. It was released about a year ago originally, but it’s been picking up in the last few months; is there any particular reason why it seems to be picking up now - just media promotion, that sort of thing? Well, what happened was, my manager and I went out on a radio tour, kind of on our own, ‘cause she’d been in the business for a long time and knew that that…that’s a very important thing to do still, even though some people think that it’s not. So we went out on the road on our own just, you know, hustling, and then, there was a market in Minneapolis that came across the song and gave it a chance and they started playing it like pretty heavily and a lot of stations seemed to follow that. So, we kind of got lucky there, for that station to take a chance on us. 50 // davidatlanta.com
As far as it being the lead single, I really wanted that one to come out first because I felt like the moral of the songs on the album, what I believe in and my message and whatever - that it’s all on that song. You know even musically, its’ style and everything, it’s amazing. Thank God for Peter, and thank God for the label letting me make that choice. Now, before you released Vicci, you released six albums before that. What was it like coming up with this particular album, with the backing of a label, compared to those previous albums? Well, previous albums like others were on my dime, you know, on my time. When a guy was like “write enough songs to make an album” and I’d go in there and just try them out in a week, because I’m going to have to pay for
it. And having this opportunity and having so much more than standard tips as far as production and selecting some of the producers that we used, they’ve done so much, and to just be around them, I’m like a sponge the whole time just soaking it all in. That’s definitely more, I guess you could say, like a graduation to me from what I had been doing on my own for so long.
In my first audition, I even was asked to tell all, they were like “You don’t have to hide anything, you can say you’re gay, that’s not going to have any factor in you being on the show or not.” And that’s when I was like “Alright, that’s the show for me” [laughs].
On The Voice, your coach was CeeLo. What was it like working with him? He also worked on Any hints of what the next single will be from Vicci? “Come Along”—why did you choose to get him on the single? We were very set on something, but there might be a surprise coming up, but I’m not sure it’s going to happen. If it Yeah, CeeLo from the beginning was—not only with me, but doesn’t happen, the next single will be “I Can Love.” with everyone else—he wanted us to be comfortable, and I mean, that’s one of my biggest things. He also was able You are, of course, an openly gay artist. How has to pull me out of my comfort zone, and did it in such a great that impacted your career? way as far as letting me know what he would do. Working with someone so chill and so accepting at the same time— I mean at first, it was interesting. Some people had no idea, I he was just so good about making that uncomfortable zone guess I didn’t just blast it out there, but I guess I don’t hide it feel okay. When it came to asking him to work on the single, either. I’ve always had my girlfriends come to my shows, and it wasn’t hard; I didn’t want to bug him, and I don’t expect they’ve definitely been helpful in like selling merch. I think anything from him, and if he didn’t want to do it, he could people just picked up on it, but I never said anything. have said “no,” but he said “yes,” and I was very happy about that. And to him it was just like “It’s a great song, I’ll That’s kind of why I came out at such a young age, because help you out if you feel you really like the song”. I just, I didn’t want to have to—I didn’t want anybody to be—it’s just, when you come out later and everybody’s like CeeLo isn’t on the show’s most current season, “Oh, I guess I’m not going to follow her anymore”—I wanted but Shakira and Usher are. If you had been on the people to know upfront and like the music because they like show this season, and had your pick of any of the the music. I’ve seen that happen with other artists that have coaches, which one would you have selected? come out later, and sometimes people just kind of leave, and I wanted people to have that opportunity up front. If you’re Well, I have a little crush on Shakira, so I’m sure I would have not into this, then go. You don’t have to be. loved to work with her [laughs]. But getting to know Adam and Blake, they’re great guys too, so that would’ve been a You were one of the top three contestants on hard choice. If I didn’t know any of them, I would’ve definitely The Voice’s first season. The Voice has had more picked Shakira. openly gay artists on the show during the course of a season than other shows like American Idol or The X Factor. What is it about The Voice in particular that you think makes it okay for gay artists to be out and be successful on the show? I think what was a really cool idea was the staff and the crew and people that could come together and make a show like The Voice happen. The staff, they were very accepting of everybody—that’s what made the show so much fun for me, was feeling like I was around so many wonderful people. When a show like that has that energy all ready, it’s gonna come out—the audience is going to feel it, the artists are going to feel it, and even the people that they’ve hired as coaches, they picked the right ones because all of them are just really great people— even the new ones. It just felt like a family there, and I’m sure even the last season as well, it’s the same thing. The crew is wonderful. @DavidAtlantaGA // 51
