Can—and Should—We Forgive?
L
ast week, in a stunning but welcome move, “ex-gay” organization Exodus International announced that they were closing their doors, and president Alan Chambers issued a lengthy apology to the LGBT community. More than Exodus’ closing, that apology is what has stayed with me. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly encourage you to do so. It’s an unequivocal apology to those who have been harmed by Exodus, with some specific ways Exodus has harmed people, including the destruction of families and communities. Personally, it’s fairly easy to forgive Mr. Chambers. I know from personal experience how people can recognize the torture that comes from their words and actions, and I believe that he’s seen the error of his ways.

As a community, though, I can’t say that we can or should forgive him. Even if I think it’s what we should do, I know there are plenty in our community who have been damaged by the actions of Exodus. Members of our community have gone so far as to commit suicide in part due to their activities. I sense that this will be a debate we’ll be having as a larger LGBT community for a while, and I’m curious to hear what you have to say. I’m sure my inbox will be filling up with opinions shortly. SheZow premieres without sun collapsing into the earth The crazies of the world love to use the word “transgender” to instigate fake outrage over anyone who doesn’t conform to gender roles, so when the latest children’s cartoon series SheZow premiered recently on The Hub, a kids cable channel, they went ballistic. That’s why it’s so nice to report that SheZow, the creation of Obie Scott Wade, is nothing more than a fun, colorful, superhero show that also just happens to be about a young boy who takes on his late aunt’s superhero persona whenever crime needs to be vanquished. He transforms into her character—including the wig and shirt—and becomes SheZow, the crime fighter. Then he returns, happily, to being a boy. Technically that makes him a situational transvestite in the service of law and order and, clearly, young audiences are already understanding that it no more makes the character transgender (a word most of them have probably never encountered) than the Batman costume turns Bruce Wayne into an actual flying mammal of the order Chiroptera. The Legend of
Cyndi Lauper Iconic singer on ‘unbelievable’ Tony win and standing up for her gay fans By Chris Azzopardi

B
efore this year’s Tonys, the legendary Cyndi Lauper was already considered a champion. A champion of the Grammys. A champion of the pop charts. A champion of gay rights.
Being the first woman to have won a solo Tony for Best Original Score is also a historical moment. Knowing that, how does it feel to break down gender barriers in that way?
But as a teary-eyed Lauper accepted her Best Original Score statue for the music of Kinky Boots (it also won Best Musical for a total of six Tonys), the Broadway coming-of-age sensation about a drag queen and a shoemaker as unlikely business partners, she was recognized for something she had never been before: The girl who just wanted to have fun, with her apple-red hair and heavy Queens accent, was now a champion of the Broadway stage.
I’m excited. I mean, they don’t put us in the rice fields anymore, so that’s good! (Laughs) And there’s more of me coming up. I’m excited that I was able to do that, but I also feel like I just wanted to do a really good job. That was really important. But hey, I’m big on firsts! It’s important to widen the horizon. For years you’ve been sticking up for the underdogs—particularly, and obviously, the gay community.
Between gigs on her She’s So Unusual Tour, which hits Atlanta Symphony Hall on July 2, Lauper gave us a ring recently to chat about her emotional night at the Tonys, freaking out rock stars with her “wildly nutty” persona and the reason she’s always stood up for her gay fans.
I’m a friend and family member, so of course. And we were all able to come together, at this one point, with everyone who’s worked at fighting for equality in the community for so long. This was an opportunity for everybody to step up at the right time, in the right moment—all of Big congrats on Kinky Boots and the Tony, Cyndi. us together—and make a “little fable,” as Harvey likes Could you feel the good gay vibes that night? to say, and put together some ideas in a catchy, rhythmic way. It’s to have people understand, because you can tell Aw, thank you. It was unbelievable. And yes. Yes, I did. It people stuff, but when you hear people’s personal experiwas a shock. ences, that’s different. That’s way different. This is one of the first times in a while you’ve been recognized on a mainstream level for your work. Was that at all on your mind as your name was being called? Was it maybe the cause of some of those tears?
This does feel very relevant to what’s going on in the world right now. It’s like a love letter to the gay community. Was that at all one of your reasons for taking on Kinky Boots in the first place?
Well, we worked really hard, and to have it be successful—and to be able to get to work with Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Mitchell, and see them that night—was great, but then to actually win a Tony was really unbelievable. Yeah, I wasn’t even thinking. To have the (theater) community welcome me in like that, that was really something. You don’t always get welcomed into a place, especially if you kind of, you know, talk a little funny. But that doesn’t matter. I was just really touched by that.
I took on Kinky Boots years ago. But yeah, I’m very excited that that’s the case—so is Harvey and so is Jerry and so are all of us, even the producers. This is a very key time for people to have an understanding about other people, to understand that you can overcome differences by acceptance and work together for the higher good.
In a sense, all of us can relate to drag performer Lola, played by Billy Porter, who struggles for acceptance. I sense that you two might have a Is that what was going through your mind when lot in common. What do you think? you won? That feeling of acceptance from the theater community? I was Lola for a long time before Billy showed up! (Laughs) Harvey was Lola, too. And then there was Billy. I was just looking at everything, thinking, “Remember But I was all those characters. You have to be. that you’re here. You made it to the winners’ circle.” And then when they announced my name, I looked over at What was your personal relationship to Kinky Boots? straps and buckles. I got a lot of boots! I don’t think of them as kinky; I think of them as pretty and sexy. What’s it like touring for your very first album, She’s So Unusual? Well, it’s the anniversary, so this tour’s a little different because I’m actually singing the record the way it was recorded. Right. What’s it like to have that, your earliest career accomplishment, intersect with the success of Kinky Boots, your latest accomplishment? It’s odd. I didn’t know I was gonna win the Tony, and I didn’t know that Kinky Boots would be nominated 13 times. So then we had to work, so I went to work. But I had no idea. I thought, “Well, I’ll have off in May, Tonys will come in June, then the tour.”

How has your relationship with the songs on She’s So Unusual changed since you wrote and recorded them for the first time over 30 years ago?
I listen to it and understand why some other rock ’n’ rollers were frightened of me. It was a little different and confusing, I guess, for some people. It was Thirty or 40 years ago, did you see Broadway in funny, wildly nutty and yet it had some very deep moments, which must have been very confusing. Though your future? I think it made perfect sense. It was very much me. Forty years ago? No! No, no. I was just trying to get the Are you still so unusual? hell out of those clubs. disappointed their dad. It’s about overcoming and acceptance, you know. And healing.
Thirty years ago?
I don’t know. I never really thought I was to begin with. The only reason we called it that was because we were doing “He’s So Unusual” with “Yeah Yeah” No. I wanted to record music. I was very excited about and (producer) Bill (Wittman) turned around and recording music. said, “She’s so unusual.” And then we’re like, “Oh So when did Broadway become a reality for you? yeah, that’s a great title.” I knew for the rest of my life that’d be my handle … but, you know, I was a good sport! I don’t know. My upcoming project is to take some time and sit on my big ol’ butt and not think for two seconds… and then it’ll come to me. Yes, I do want to do something else. I would like to work with Jerry; I’d like to work with Harvey. But right now I’m on tour. Maybe that was a good thing. Get away from it and think about what I’d like to do, and then choose wisely. Few performers have the connection you do with the gay community. Reflecting on your career, when did you decide to take the community under your wing? Well, I always saw people being discriminated against— my friends and people that I work with. At first, I was going to just take refuge and sing in the clubs at night. I thought, “Hey, that’s a lot of fun.” But when I couldn’t take the conservative straight community, I would run home kind of, and then I started seeing a lot of disparity going on, things that were wrong. I just felt like, “These are my fans. You gotta help them have more love for themselves.” As they were taking civil rights away, I thought, “Somebody better say something. And in two seconds, I will.” And I did. I had seen Harvey Fierstein speak and he said something once, that happy people don’t self-destruct—and I thought, “That’s right.” That’s all you want. People are 18 // davidatlanta.com
different, but as long as they’re all happy, healthy-minded people then we’re all doing good, and how can I kind of change the image for them? And then one thing led to another. First it was just some T-shirts. It was talking at Cher’s concert. It was doing stuff with (my sister) Ellen for PFLAG. One thing led to another till I saw more opportunities. We did the True Colors Tour. I wanted my own tour and everyone said, “Why don’t you call it True Colors?” I said, “We can’t call it True Colors without including the community, because this song has become a very important song for the community.” I started to see more and more what could and should be done. With the Give a Damn Campaign, I saw an opportunity because I’m straight. I thought, “I shouldn’t be the only straight guy here. In every civil rights movement, you need everybody to stand up.” I think everybody coming from all sides breaks down the walls a little bit. Things are changing. You have to just get your foot in the door so it doesn’t close, and then keep widening that door till it opens. Cyndi Lauper brings her She’s So Unusual Tour to Atlanta Symphony Hall on July 2 at 8 p.m. To purchase tickets, stop by the Woodruff Arts Center box office, any Ticketmaster outlet, or visit ticketmaster.com.

THE SORDID LIFE OF
DEL
SHORES BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN
photo: Alan Mercer 26 // davidatlanta.com
Few people can tap into the gay South like Del Shores. Whether through his cult classic film Sordid Lives (which spawned a series on Logo) or newer productions like his Southern Baptist Sissies play or Blues for Willadeen film, Shores has been keeping busy with projects that feel familiar to plenty of his Atlanta fans.
very, very pleased with it. It’s emotional, it’s funny, and…we can’t make any big announcements yet, but we have several film festivals that have asked us to be [present]. I’m excited to share that as well. You balance between the one-man shows and ensembles. What is it like bouncing back and forth between those two very different types of projects? With one, you more or less have free rein, and with the other, you have to collaborate with others in some form.
David Atlanta caught up with the charming (and as you can see, quite verbose) Mr. Shores earlier this month to discuss his busy career, future plans, and when Yeah, you do have to relinquish some of the control. As audiences may get to see a return to the realm of Sordid you may suspect, I have a controlling aspect to my perLives. sonality. I guess that’s why I direct, write and produce. But I have such a great team with Emerson Collins, In the last few years, you’ve kept busy, career- who’s also the star of Southern Baptist Sissies and my wise. You’ve produced a couple of one-man producing partner. He’s fantastic. He started with me as shows; directed a film, Blues for Willadeen, an actor and then I saw how smart he was. I surround based on one of your plays, The Trials and myself in a collaborative way with people who I trust, Tribulations of a Trailer-Trash Housewife— with people who are talented. I love the actors. I’m at which is quite a mouthful to say, by the way… my best, I feel, when I’m directing material I’ve written, and I like being behind the scenes. It is, it’s a big one. Thus the change for the film. (Laughs) They beat me down and got me to change the And then there’s that little gift that happened a few title. But yeah, I shot it right there in Atlanta. Such a years ago, where I stepped on stage again. There’s good time there in your finest trailer courts. nothing wrong with being adored. (Laughs) It’s such a rush to be up there with a mic and no rules, you know. So I have to ask: how do you maintain such a You can just say…well, I sort of subscribe to how old busy creative pace? You have so much going on. How do you do it all? Del Shores You know what: I try to sleep. I was going to answer with something silly like drugs or whatever, which is not true—I try to live a pretty clean life. So sleep, and when I’m performing, I don’t drink too much. Those two things, and I exercise. And I make a lot of lists. It really helps me organize my day, to make lists and just check them off and figure it all out. You know, you can get a lot done. And I absolutely have an amazing team around me. I have great producing partners. We also just filmed the play Southern Baptist Sissies, which I think will be an incredible piece for many, many people. I just blocked the picture, and it’s got a crazygreat cast: Dale Dickey’s back with me, Leslie Jordan, Ann Walker, or Miss LaVonda in Sordid Lives, and Dr. Eve, Rosemary Alexander. You know, that play did very well. It actually had a wonderful production in Atlanta. But with the time and what’s going on politically, we’re seeing so much progress with equality, but in that, we’re seeing a response from the Religious Right. It felt like we had to film it, and I’ve staged it here in L.A. It’s been completely financed by an Indiegogo campaign, and it’s so beautiful. I’m @DavidAtlantaGA // 27
year. My other producing partner is Louise Beard from Birmingham, and she produced my play Yellow with me out here. She’s got a Tony nomination—she produced the Broadway show A Christmas Story, and got a Tony nomination. But our whole philosophy was to tell stories and shoot stories that were less expensive to make, and also embrace the fan base that we have, especially with the Sordid franchise. I’ve worked really hard in the last year to get the rights to do that. You are actually the first interview I have done since this happened, where I am free and clear to make another movie or two. We can’t do another series, but I do have the movie rights back, and I’m very excited about that. So yeah, now I just have to figure out how to take y’all on another sordid journey with these characters. We all love each other—the actors and myself—so we love the franchise, we love going back to Sordid. So I think most of them will come back. And if not, I’ll replace them like I did in the series. If someone doesn’t come back, the character still lives. But I think I’ll get most of them back. Beyond Sordid Lives, what’s next for you? Southern women get. I just say whatever the fuck comes out of my mouth, you know? (Laughs) And I’m just having such a good time. My God, I had such a great show in Atlanta. One of the highlights of my tour last year. I love my Atlanta peeps; those fans are big fans down there. They come out and support. It’s just fun. I can be political. I can be bawdy and say something that’s—maybe poignant. I guess that’s a matter of opinion. And I feel like with my work, like with Southern Baptist Sissies or Blues for Willadeen, I can certainly tackle some big subjects and put them into capable hands of actors like Beth Grant, Dale Dickey, Leslie Jordan and Octavia Spencer. I’m pretty taken care of [with] those characters.
Well, of course I want to support Sissies through the festival runs. I’m writing a new movie with Leslie Jordan called The Happy Holloways. It’s a mockumentary about this crazy gospel-singing family group that’s on its last toenail of fame, and it’s really hysterical. I’m having such a good time working on it with Mr. Jordan. He has more talent per inch than anybody, I think, that works in our industry. And Atlanta sure loves him—and Swinging Richards. The boys at Swinging Richards love Leslie Jordan. So those are the two new things that are coming up. I just filmed my show that I did in Atlanta, Naked. Sordid. Reality. I’ll be editing that as well. And I’m developing a new TV show that I’m working on, and…lots of stuff, as you said. I stay busy. It helps me.
We’ve seen Sordid Lives as both a film and a TV series. Is there any chance you’ll be return- You know, I’m single again, so there’s some effort—I ing to that world in the future? shouldn’t say effort, but that takes some time. You know, trying to figure that out at age 55. It’s all good. It’s on our slate. I formed a production company last I’m happy. I wake up happy these days—I do. 28 // davidatlanta.com

When was the last time you were tested for HIV? Knowing your status is the first step into taking control of your own health. National HIV Testing Day is June 27. This annual campaign encourages people of all ages and risk groups to be tested for HIV.
Who should be tested? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says testing and screening should be included with routine medical care in all health care settings. The current recommendation is for all persons to be screened once for HIV and any person deemed high risk for HIV infection
should be screened at least annually. Based on that level of risk, more frequent testing should be considered in certain groups. According to the Department of Public Health, Georgia is ranked sixth highest in the U.S. for AIDS cases through December 2009. Statistics in Georgia reveal that in 2010, approximately 40,328 people were living with HIV/AIDS. Of that number, Fulton and Dekalb had the highest HIV prevalence in the state. The rate of new infections among men who have sex with men has increased from 26,700 in 2008 to 29,800 in 2010. African Americans are disproportionately affected, as compared to Caucasians. It is estimated that HIV infections within the African-American population are 7.9 times higher, as compared to Caucasians. The highest rate of new infections is among African-American females.
How are you tested for HIV? There are several technologies available to your care provider to test you for the presence of HIV. Ask which test is available to you:
RAPID HIV TESTS: These tests provide you with results in approximately 20 minutes. The rapid HIV test detects the presence of HIV antibodies for both HIV 1 and HIV 2. Rapid HIV tests can be performed with the use of whole blood (usually a “finger stick) or oral fluids. Recently, ORAQUICK has been approved for home testing with the use of saliva.
Advertorial feature spo
ENZYME IMMUNOASSAYS is a blood sample that is sent to a laboratory for the detection of HIV 1 and HIV 2 antibodies. The results of this test can take several days depending on the laboratory. THE WESTERN BLOT is considered to be a supplemental means of testing to confirm infection by HIV. Western Blot also requires a whole blood sample that is sent to a laboratory for testing and can take approximately 1 – 2 weeks to obtain the final results.
public health personnel have access to this information at the state level and the information is used for data collection only to determine the prevalence of HIV in the state. When this information is shared with the CDC for national health trends, all identifying information is removed. So, circling back to who should be tested: All adults and adolescents between the ages of 13 and 64 should receive an HIV test annually as part of their routine medical care.

A positive result with this test does not mean that you are definitely infected with HIV, but rather that additional testing should be done in a medical setting. A negative result with this test does not mean that you are definitely not infected with HIV, particularly when exposure may have been within the previous 3 months. • If your test is negative and you engage in activities that put you at risk for HIV on a regular basis, you should test regularly. • This product should not be used to make decisions on behavior that may put you at increased risk for HIV.

Newcomer Israel Broussard on gay role, wearing stilettos and the real-life ‘Bling Ring’ In The Bling Ring, Sofia Coppola’s flashy zeitgeist neo-noir based on true events of teenaged Hollywood bandits, Israel Broussard takes lead-role reins as a gay L.A. transplant befriended by a chick clique of thieving punks. Marc, together with his four girlfriends (including one played by Emma Watson), loot the cribs of the rich and famous—Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox—to get their own glam on. In a recent chat, Broussard, 18, talked about Marc’s homosexuality being a non-issue in the film, shooting in Paris Hilton’s actual house and learning to walk in heels.
written, so I wasn’t sure what exactly I was getting into. (Laughs) You must have known that Marc was gay, right? Well, reading the sides you can kind of tell, and I talked to Sofia about it; I was like, “What’s gonna come of this?” (Laughs) She said, “It is what it is. He’s not flamboyant or anything like that; there’s nothing over the top.” So I trusted her with that, and I think Sofia does a good job at not explaining it in the movie. There’s no scene where he’s coming out, where they actually point it out – it’s just accepted. It was refreshing to see that. You don’t have to have a big coming-out scene in every movie with a gay character, you know.
Especially if the boy has a thing for heels like How did you react when you first read the Vanity Marc does. Fair article, “The Suspects Wore Louboutins,” an Right, right. (Laughs) account of the San Fernando Valley teens who stole over $3 million from celebrities? What was wearing the stilettos like? Did you A lot of people say they were shocked and surprised and need practice? maybe even disgusted, but what stood out to me was that they got caught through Facebook – and I thought Yeah, we’d have little fashion shows and I had to learn how to walk in them and do the little runway walk … that was pretty stupid. that was interesting. I’m not meant for heels. (Laughs) But it went well. Katie (Chang) and I would have What did your audition entail? competitions of who can walk better. She said I won; The audition process for this one took a couple months. I said she won. We haven’t come to an agreement on that yet. It wasn’t until after I booked it that the script was
@DavidAtlantaGA // 43
Maybe in the future, yeah. And it would depend on how extreme the character was. I definitely want to take a break for a second and do a couple of movies where I’m straight. You know, homosexuality is being accepted more and more into our society. And there’s nothing wrong with it. The sooner people realize that, the better. But at the same time, I don’t want a finger being pointed at me. As the “gay actor”? Right. So were you at all worried about playing a real person? Are you more conscious of being as accurate as possible because of that? It crossed my mind. I wouldn’t say I was worried, though. Sofia was intent on making the movie a fictional film and yeah, there were a lot of true things that happened, but the storyline itself is completely fictional. We never met up with Nick Prugo or Alexis Neiers or any of the real Bling Ring…and we had no intent to. Now, if I were to meet him, it’d be all right. Maybe a little awkward. (Laughs) It doesn’t sound like wearing heels was that pleasant for you.
How much trash TV were you required to watch to prepare for this role?
No, it wasn’t. (Laughs) You know, I looked at this role as something to overcome personally. I didn’t want to do a gay character or a Disney character or some sci-fi character because I didn’t want to be typecast, so it was important to me that this was kind of brushed over. You can tell in the movie Marc’s gay but, again, it’s not pointed out. I think this was a personal battle I overcame and I became a new person, because I felt like I could expand and do more with my acting. Image is everything … and I like to have control of that image.
I had to watch quite a bit of reality TV. Keeping Up with the Kardashians was one of them. I watched Fashion Police. Mostly my focus was learning about fashion…and learning how to walk in heels.
Would you play gay roles in the future? And what would that depend on? 44 // davidatlanta.com
Do you have a favorite reality show? You know, it was Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Kim, Kourtney…man! And then gosh, I forget his name, but Kourtney’s husband – that dude is just like…he’s such a douche! How were you able to relate to Marc?
In elementary school, I didn’t have many friends. I wasn’t feeling the attention and the acceptance that I felt I deserved, so I just built the character up from that with his insecurities and lack of self-confidence.
That I bought? (Laughs) Maybe Hanes. You know what, I’ve got a peacoat from H&M that I bought. I’m comfortable in Levi’s and a T-shirt. It doesn’t take much to make me happy.
Tell me about shooting the scene where it’s just What did you learn about fashion from this role? you dancing in front of a webcam, one of the more telling and haunting parts of the film. I learned what lapels are on a suit! (Laughs) And I was surrounded by all these brand names, but it wasn’t until Sofia came up to me a couple of days before we filmed recently actually – when we started doing all the press that and said, “Hey, have you seen the video of Nick – that I really kind of dove into fashion and all its brand dancing in front of the webcam?” I said “no” and she showed me it and said, “I want you to do this.” You can’t names. Now I talk to my stylist and I’m like, “How about really say no to Sofia Coppola. So I’m trying to figure out we switch it from the Marni to the J Brand?” how I’m gonna pull this off, because a) I have no rhythm and b) I have no self-confidence—so now I’m gonna Filming in Paris Hilton’s house, the site of one of the robberies, were you surprised by how many walk up to a webcam in front of a bunch of people and of the belongings have her face on them? start dancing, pretty much half-stripping? I did it and I thought I was bombing it the entire time. Just completely destroying it. When I saw it, it was a little embarrassing, You know, I was kind of expecting it. It was kind of but people were saying it was real and vulnerable—and I overwhelming to be in her house. It was like the Garden don’t mean to toot my own horn with that. of Eden, stepping into some place nobody else has really been. Rummaging through all her stuff, I kind of felt like I was part of the Paris Hilton family. These days, it starts with social media. (People) get swept up and caught in the drifts of what’s cool and If you could legally break into a celebrity’s what’s not, and that’s when they lose touch with themselves. That scene was the truth. house, whose would you break into? You get to wear some blingin’ couture in the movie. What’s the most expensive piece of clothing you own? 46 // davidatlanta.com

HENRY’S FETCHES
MIDTOWN By Clayton Morey
H
larger patio space shaded by existing trees is under construction that will accommodate another 120 seats and is sure to be a popular space once it is completed sometime mid-summer.
The interior features two bars with warm reclaimed wood accents and seating for about 100 people. The outdoor space is a work in progress. The small patio is now open but only has limited seating, however a
While the space is a bit brown for my taste, it does offer a cozy warmth that I found inviting and is indicative of a neighborhood pub. The renovation was overseen by Lucas Carter, who has now joined the team as the Front of the House Manager, making Henry’s somewhat of a grass roots undertaking.
enry’s Midtown Tavern, the second Midtown destination opened by Maureen Kalmanson—the first being Campagnolo Restaurant + Bar—opened June 8. The location at 132 10th Street between Peachtree and Juniper, formerly occupied by failing Thai concepts, has been reimagined as this modern take on tavern.
48 // davidatlanta.com
Henry’s also features a flat panel on almost every wall and will be playing every sports event you can imagine. So for all you sports enthusiast out there, Henry’s offers a more highbrow venue for viewing your favorite sporting events. Stop in and check out what the Henry’s team has done with the place. No matter if you want to have a pint at the bar, a nice dinner with friends in the cozy dining room, catch the big game with friends, or have a cocktail with your canine companion on the patio, Henry’s welcomes you. And, Henry’s, we welcome you to the Gayborhood. Henry’s takes its name from its owner’s beloved dog, Henry. His adorable face adorns the menus, staff shirts, and is the centerpiece of the “Wall of Dog”—a photo wall featuring the precious mugs of patron’s pooches. Dog friendliness does not end there. The patio will be dog friendly and welcome your canine companion with water bowls for all.
Henry’s Midtown Tavern is located at 132 10th St. For more information, visit henrysatl.com or call (404) 537-4477. Thoughts or comments? Contact Clayton Morey at clayton@feedinfrank.com or visit his website at www. feedinfrank.com for more restaurant reviews. Follow me on Twitter @FeedinFrank
The menu offers typical tavern fare and an extensive selection of beer and wine. A quick count shows about 60 craft beers both in bottle and on draft. The wine list is also well thought out and features some gems you might not find in some other tavern style concepts. Henry’s serves dinner seven days a week until late, as well as lunch Monday thru Friday, and has plans to add brunch in the near future. While I have not had the pleasure of a full dining experience, I can tell you they pour a good cocktail (Love you, Cole)! Some menu highlights that piqued my interest however are the Ahi Tuna Pizza with Tuna Tartar and a Sriracha and Sesame Dressing and four creative variations on my favorite food group, tacos! The bar features a good selection of spirits and will soon offer a specialty cocktail list created by the bar staff themselves. @DavidAtlantaGA // 49
zopardi By Chris Az Kinky Boots (Original Broadway Cast Recording) “The world seemed brighter six inches off the ground.” So goes the drag-inspired fabulousness of the British indieturned-Broadway hit Kinky Boots, a love letter to anyone who’s ever felt different, rejected and like they’d look hawt in a pair of stilettos; it’s self-discovery set to music. Who knows a thing or two about true colors shining through? About following your heart? Cyndi Lauper, of course. The pop icon takes the music-writing reins in this passion project, the culmination of a career that’s not only positioned her as a chart-topper but as Mama Bear to her queer cubs. The heartbreaking honesty of “Not My Father’s Son,” then, is something Lauper can empathize with – and that Billy Porter sings with gut-wrenching pathos and a bravo finish. “Hold Me in Your Heart,” the other slow-building centerpiece, is another showstopper; as Lola, Porter shows that song who’s boss with a very “And I Am Telling You…” moment of climatic vocal heat. Other highlights on a recording full of them: “Sex is in the Heel,” with its Scissor Sisters likeness; the other lead, Charlie (Stark Sands), on “Take What You Got”; and the finale, “Raise You Up/Just Be,” an empowerment pick-me-up echoing Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Even without live drag queens strutting in sequins and glitter, the Kinky Boots music alone sparkles. Grade: B+ 52 // davidatlanta.com
THE NATIONAL, Trouble Will Find Me It’s still early in the year, but hold a spot for The National on your best-of list. Trouble Will Find Me is a gloriously rich, life-changing listen that knows how to elicit emotion (see: sadness, more sadness) without overblown superfluity. The Ohio indie-rockers’ sixth release knows that subtlety can be just as, if not more, powerful—especially when heard alone in a dark room, these mellow slow-burners washing over you in peaceful solitude. With pensiveness that gets you in the gut (“I don’t know why we had to lose the ones who took so little space”) and the gentle ambiance of glistening guitars, “Hard to Find” is the perfect outro. The same quiet beauty is captured on the wistful standout “I Need My Girl,” an utterly gorgeous bass rumble carrying the track into a sublime state of shifting splendor as frontman Matt Berninger laments regret and being “a 45 percenter then”; “Pink Rabbits,” too, carries an emotional heaviness despite its feather-weight melody. It’s the case with a lot of this perfectly rendered work—more delicately produced than the band’s esteemed Boxer, or even 2010’s High Violet (though Berninger’s baritone still packs an aching punch), but no less affecting as it hangs over you long after the coda disappears into the horizon. Grade: A-
ALSO OUT DAFT PUNK, Random Access Memories This probably isn’t the Daft Punk disc that anyone was expecting— a sonic bed of mostly non-dance electro reverie for the mellowing afterparty—because it’s better than that. France’s music-making mystery men, as ambitious as ever, dole out a sound-doc on a techno legend (“Giorgio by Moroder”), a galvanizing space odyssey (“Contact”) that morphs into a frantic spellbinder and synth-rock stunner “Instant Crush” with The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas taking vocal lead. “Doin’ It Right” is inspiring robot music (that’s a good thing), and the retro-chic shakeout “Get Lucky” should get feet on the floor. Random Access Memories, though, doesn’t dance the night away; it’s moving in a way you don’t expect. CHARLI XCX, True Romance Who knows when Robyn’s gonna let her body talk again, so till then we have British pop newcomer Charlotte Aitchison (aka Charli XCX ) to tide us over. That’s not to say Charli’s on Robyn’s level talentwise—this chick’s only 20, so she has time to get there—but she has some of the Swede’s swag. Charli also sounds as deliciously pop as Robyn with “You’re the One,” and no wonder: The track’s producer, Patrik Berger, assisted “Dancing on My Own.” “Stay Away,” the blog hit that helped launch her into stardom, pulsates with synth fuzz and sass. “Lock You Up” is dreamy greatness. These are hooky, defiant pop tracks with gumption. More, please. @DavidAtlantaGA // 53

THIS SATURDAY! JUNE 29
IN THEATRES THIS WEEK There are plenty of reasons to watch The Heat. Maybe you love Melissa McCarthy, arguably the best part of both Bridesmaids and Identity Thief. Or perhaps you’re looking forward to Sandra Bullock’s first comedic venture since 2009’s The Proposal. In any case, The Heat is one of the funniest films of the year. White House Down, the latest film from Independence Day director Roland Emmerich brings him back to the White House in a surprisingly well-done mix of action and comedy. Between this film and Olympus Has Fallen, which shared some plot points with White House Down earlier this year, this film’s the one to watch. If that doesn’t sell you, Channing Tatum’s in a tank top for a large portion of the film.

Stop bringing your straight girl friends to the bar! It’s a man bar, not a sideshow for the straights to stare at! Why do we have so many drag bars now, but no bars for dancing? Not everyone likes drag!
What’s more important than straight teeth: tooth to gum ratio.

Tank Tops? More like Tank BOTTOMS.
Guys who don’t like uncut dick are literally insane.
STOP referring to everyone as “bottoms” (friends, strangers, anyone). You’re not cute, and you’re not funny. It’s offensive. The best way to deal with drama: ignore it. Let the bitch act like a psycho all on their own.
I want an ass so epic, people actually question its legitimacy. Like yeah, it’s real. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
