Just Snarky, or Negative?

ince I came on as Editor in Chief of David Atlanta back in January, one of my goals has been to make the magazine reflective of more parts of our community. It’s a goal that I don’t think we’ve fully reached, but I do think we’ve managed to reach out to various parts of our broad community. Over the past few weeks, one of our newer recurring features has started receiving some mixed reactions: Creep of the Week, a weekly column that offers a somewhat snarky overview of a recent incident by someone opposed to the LGBT community in some way. While we’re not a news publication, and we tend to focus more on arts, entertainment and nightlife, I feel that there’s some room in the magazine for political commentary, and this is a not-so-serious way of tackling some of the negativity aimed at our community. That being said, some of our readers do not share my opinion. Some feel that the column is too negative, that it brings us down to the level of those who hate us, and that it cheapens the value of our magazine. Again, the reaction’s been mixed; we also have readers who enjoy this feature. For the time being, the column will continue to run, but we’re opening the floor to you, our readers. Ian McKellen to star in a zombie movie. Excited? When you’re Gandalf and Magneto at the same time, you can do whatever you like. So you can forgive Sir Ian McKellen for deciding that another Shakespeare adaptation would be, of course, a wonderful idea… perhaps later. Right now he’d much rather run off to star in a zombie comedy sporting the unlikely title of The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet. You really can’t blame him. Set in the 18th century, the story concerns a small English village beset by a zombifying illness, causing the uninfected to flee, even if it means going to – oh dear – France. So think Shaun of the Dead with less electricity and more mud. Directed by Matthew Butler, the film also stars Gillian Anderson and Academy Award nominee Imelda Staunton and is due sometime in 2014. No word on who plays the Buxom Strumpet. Hope it’s McKellen.

J. Tyler: Atlanta’s #1 Gay, White Rapper

y monthly variety show, The Brent Star Variety Show, includes more than just comedy acts. For example, there’s this particular gay white rapper that I found on Facebook. I first invited J. Tyler to appear in my East Atlanta Got Talent show last year, then, my variety show this year. He has been performing all over Atlanta ever since. Recently, we both won GA Voice’s “Best of Atlanta” awards; I won Best Comedian and J. Tyler won Best Musician. I asked him how he felt about that, and he said, “I was literally in shock! I could not believe that all my hard work was finally paying off in such a short time. It’s a blessing.” And now it’s time for him to have an article in David Atlanta.

of the week: Ken Cuccinelli

You see, Cuccinelli, who is currently Virginia’s Attorney General and is running for Governor, is campaigning hard and fast to keep Virginia’s sodomy law, which makes anal and oral sex a felony, on the books. The very type of law that was declared unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court in the 2003 Lawrence v Texas ruling. But that is just a pesky little detail. Granted, any politician worth his salt knows that positioning is everything. (To be clear, I’m talking “positioning” as in public relations not, um, pubic relations.) So just how do you sell the criminalization of Virginian’s own sex lives to voters? Under the guise of keeping “kids safe,” of course! Cuccinelli would like you to believe that Virginia simply must keep “sodomy” illegal in order to protect children from child predators. Because apparently only pedophiles would stoop so low (figuratively, though also literally at times) as to have oral or anal sex. Granted, this is coming from the man who said in 2008, “When you look at the homosexual agenda, I cannot support something that I believe brings nothing but selfdestruction, not only physically but of their soul.” He reaffirmed this belief in a debate against his Democratic opponent, Terry McAuliffe, on July 20.

et’s say, hypothetically, that you wanted to become Virginia’s next governor and you want to find a way to stand out and get noticed. You could run on a job creation platform. You could promise to lower taxes. Or maybe even vow to improve public education. But let’s face it. Those issues are boring. Voters have been there done that. Let’s think. There’s got to be something… Wait, I’ve got it! If you really want to win, campaign on the promise to ban oral sex. Because if there’s one thing that people hate, it’s the scourge of fellatio and cunnilingus.

So it’s understandable that one might think this whole “keep the sodomy law alive” crusade is just Cuccinelli’s way of saying, “Go blow” (figuratively only) to the gays. But don’t worry. The sodomy law applies to everyone, equally. Now whether or not it’s enforced equally is another story. But you can rest easy knowing that just about everybody around you is a felon. Cuccinelli claims that consenting adults are not impacted by the law, but as NBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell and others have pointed out, the law’s wording literally covers everyone or, as the law’s own language puts it, “Any person.” Added bonus fact: when Cuccinelli was a state senator he voted against exempting consenting adults from the law.

Lost-n-Found Youth was founded by Rick Westbrook, Art Izzard and Paul Swicord and is a project of the Atlanta Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. LnFY is Atlanta’s only organization actively housing our city’s homeless LGBT youth. On being a beneficiary of this event, Jim Swicord said, “We consider every donation we receive as significant. Whether from an individual who pledged $5 a month or more or a larger donation from a community business or organization, every donation has a direct impact on our ability to provide services to youth in need.” LnFY runs a six-bed housing facility as well as a 24/7 hotline for at-risk youth. “The monies will go into the Lost-N-Found Youth, Inc. general operating expenses account and/or toward our capital campaign,” said Swicord. “General operating funds are spent directly serving homeless and transitioning youth both on the street and at our six-bed facility.” They also provide food, clothing, and aid in obtaining personal documentation, guidance on getting off the streets and help provide medical attention and mental-health evaluations. According to Swicord, “Earlier this year we unveiled a capital campaign to expand our bed space and services we can offer LGBT youth; the strategic plan includes a thrift store (already funded), a drop-in center and larger transitional housing facility.” The young yet successful organization couldn’t be more thankful to be one of this year’s beneficiaries. “The community has consistently helped to meet the challenge of helping us provide the resources Atlanta’s homeless LGBT youth need to become stable and successful,” Swicord said. “We are proud of the Atlanta LGBT community, but even more so, we are grateful.” The Health Initiative was founded as the Atlanta Lesbian Cancer Initiative in 1996. Over the years, the organization evolved into the Atlanta Lesbian Health

The only requirement is for LGBT community members, friends, family and supporters to have an unforgettably fun-filled day while raising money and awareness for both the community and the beneficiaries alike. With the Silver Package ($41.99,) you get park admission, rides and parking; the Basic Package ($36.99) includes park admission and rides. Additionally, Six Flags’ Season Pass holders pay just $23.99 for admission to the private pavilion, buffet and parking.

Well thank you. I think I was the happiest on set doing Curb Your Enthusiasm. It was super fun, there was no script. We got to do the scene different every take. Larry I just love Southern audiences. You know, a lot of what David amazing to work with and JB Smooth was on set I do is storytelling, and I feel like Southern people and I don’t even remember what he was saying, just that I understand that and receive that more than anyone else. I was laughing so hard and half of what he did didn’t make am also super silly when I am on stage and say ridiculous it into the show. So having been there and seeing what it things sometimes, and I feel like Southern audiences looks like first before it becomes the edited version you embrace that and go with me in the joke more so than on television and it was incredible working with Larry Northern or West Coast audiences in some cases. Anybody? I would want to play “Azaka” from the musical Once on This Island. She is a big black woman and she plays Mother Earth and she has a great song called “Mama Will Provide” and I just love belting out that song in the shower so the idea of getting to do that on Broadway would awesome. In your opinion, is there a queer comedic sensibility based on our shared experiences? I think that there are things that are only funny to us (gay people) as we are a sub-culture. I talk about my girlfriend obviously and I use the pronoun ‘she’ when I am talking about the person I am dating but I don’t do a lot of “gay material”. I’m not talking about girls with wallets on a chain or rainbow stickers and the shit we’ve all heard 500 times, but certainly since I am a lesbian, that creeps its way into the material and my act. There are always big pockets of gay people at these shows, which I always enjoy. I was in Tampa for Pride weekend and I didn’t even @DavidAtlantaGA // 35

know it was Pride weekend and the club didn’t know it was Pride weekend and they just happened to book me that weekend. I get to the show, and you know who gay people know other gay people, and I am looking out at the crowd and see that almost everyone is obviously gay and I am wondering “How the hell does this happen in Tampa?” They told me later that it was Pride weekend and it all made sense. They were coming to a show not knowing they were going to see a gay comedian, it was just a Pride Event, and I didn’t know I was performing for a gay audience. It turned out to be a perfect night. Gay audiences can be hard to make laugh sometime because often they are a more political correct crowd and may become offended by what you say more than a traditional audience.” When did you get your start in stand up? I was sixteen years old and my friend signed me up for an open mic at a bar we weren’t even old enough to get into at the time. I got up there and at the time I didn’t realize you had to do your own jokes, so I was doing Thea Vidals material. She is literally a 400 pound black woman and I was a little 16 white girl talking about being a 400 pound black woman and when I got off stage the host told me, “You are funny and got great timing, but you know you can’t just do Thea Vidals jokes,” and I was like, “What do you mean?” It didn’t make sense to me at the time, that I had to write my own jokes. I thought since bands play cover songs the same applied to comedians. I quickly learned that I better start talking about myself and making my own material.” 36 // davidatlanta.com

When did you first know you were funny? When I was a kid, I was always making up stories and acting them out for everyone; that was just who I was and it made perfect sense to everyone I am sure that I went into performing. When I was in high school I did speech and interpretation and won some national awards so it was all I could do. My parents were smart in that they helped hone me in on doing it pretty early. I started getting into plays and theater as early as first and second grade. If you could write a letter to your 13-year-old self, what would you say? Dear Jen: Don’t get married, don’t play with fire and don’t go to college. (Laughs), Love Jen If 13-year-old Jen could see you now, what would she say? My 13-year-old self would be very happy because lately in comedy, I have been meeting all these guys that I watched when I was that age. I just did a show with Tina Yothers – she was the youngest daughter on Family Ties – and then the next day I was meeting an entertainment lawyer, a guy who was interested in representing me and I am looking at him and I keep looking at him and finally I say “You look so familiar to me.” It turns he was Chunk from The Goonies. I was having a totally 80s week and then the next day I did stand-up at the Jon Lovitz club with Jon Lovitz, and Mr. Belding from Saved By The Bell was there. It was like my sixth grade dream day. So often

I am reminded of my 13-year-old self and I think she would be impressed because of who I get to work with and the fact that I don’t have to do anything during the day. (Laughs) Who are your comedic influences and do you feel they have a direct influence on your material and performance? I am in love with Lewis Black and Ron White – Black and White. I have opened for Ron White; he is fantastic. Those two guys are both storytellers. They are not afraid of silence, they are not afraid to be political, they are not afraid to be silly and I think I have definitely taken that from them. They both really light it up on stage and I think that there are comedians that are funny but they never light it up for me. That is something both of them are great it where they can take a topic from being funny to being genius, where it is so funny and so brilliant and so woven in on itself that goes to another level. That’s the kind of comedy I want to be doing. What role does the sexual identity of lesbian and the gender identity of woman play in defining comedic perspective? Well, I mean beyond the fact that I am a gay girl, which I think probably affects a lot of stuff, I really kind of identify more as a 14-year-old boy (Laughs). I don’t even think “lesbian” is even the most interesting thing about me and it is not necessarily the filter through which I view the world but it always find its way in the act. I did a show once in Huntsville, Alabama and I was wearing a button down shirt and had long hair at the time and as soon as I take the microphone some kid screams “Lesbian.” I laughed because I didn’t whether they were excited and they were a lesbian too or whether it was a scathing critique on my button down shirt. I just went with and said, “Yes. I am a lesbian. Captain Obvious has labeled me,” and I just went there and it really was a different show than most of my shows. If the topic occurs organically in the performance that it matters but my audiences always know they are dealing with a big ole dyke (Laughs).

Any advice for up and coming queer comics? I can tell you the secret to being funny. You ready? Get on stage every single fucking chance you get. Being funny is a muscle and the more you work it, the funnier you are going to be. Anyone who will listen to you tell a joke, anyone who will turn down the light on the crowd and turn the lights up on the stage and let you talk there, you get up and talk there. ustUsATL is excited to share the news of their second annual Rainbow Jam! event that gives the stage to amateur performers while raising money to benefit the LGBTQQA community. JustUsATL works around the year to provide a safe place for gay youth and also offers opportunities for individuals to give back to the community. I caught up with the organization’s Melissa Cruz to talk about the upcoming show. So what is Rainbow Jam! all about? Rainbow Jam! was established to help provide a fun, liberating space for LGBTQQA youth to showcase their talents. JustUsATL hopes that Rainbow Jam! can serve as a platform for young people who may otherwise have fewer chances to express themselves in public settings. Some of our performers may be exhibiting their talent on stage for the first time, and we hope that our event can help foster and encourage their creativity. How does the program go about finding performers for the event? We try to do as much outreach as possible, from flyering around town, networking through our social media outlets, reaching out to schools’ clubs, to simple wordof-mouth to our own friends and contacts. This year’s event has had a great turnout for performers!

Will there be any performers from last year making another appearance? There will be a few returning performers, including some of our own organizers, and we’re also particularly excited to see some fresh faces and talent. What type of performances can we expect to see? We have a great lineup this year, including performances from musicians, dancers, poets, and even a professional comedian. We’ll also have visual art displayed throughout the event space. Which food establishments will be providing refreshments for the event? The refreshments for the evening will include a variety of sandwiches from Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, appetizers and sides from Doc Chey’s Noodle House, rainbow-themed desserts, and plenty more. We’ll be providing beverages for all ages including margaritas (alcoholic and virgin), cocktails, beer, sodas, and juice boxes. The proceeds go toward funding the opening of a LGBTQQA community center. What would be the goal/ purpose of this center and has a location been chosen yet?

The community center will serve as an open, safe place for LGBTQQA youth to come whenever they need somewhere to go, and find community support. We plan to offer drop-in counseling, mental health groups, peer discussion groups, weekly social activities, safer sex education and STI testing, a homework and computer center, workshops, story shares, and monthly community events open to parents and supporters. Some ideal amenities for the center include a kitchen, a shower, an event room, an office, a meeting room, a lobby, storage space, and outdoor space. We aim to find a location thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s convenient to the train line, and by highway to as many areas of Atlanta as possible. What other events can we look forward to seeing JustUsATL host throughout the year? Our next large event is providing the youth space at Atlanta Pride. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have a bandstand throughout the weekend full of activities for youth, and two hours of youth performances on stage. Later in the fall, we plan on an event for our supporters. In terms of events for members, we will be having monthly events including a back-to-school clothing swap on August 17th, a park day with PFLAG in September, holiday events later in the year, and more!

The group is eager to introduce these young performers and their talents and is also looking forward to raising money for their community center. he unofficial gay and lesbian summer beach resort of the Mid-Atlantic states, charming Rehoboth Beach is situated along a sweeping, sandy stretch of the Delaware shore that’s within a three-hour drive of Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Over the past decade, many of the town’s guest houses, shops, and restaurants have received stylish makeovers, and this once low-key, largely middle-class town has developed a see-and-be-seen cachet that extends well beyond nearby cities. Prices have risen, too, but Rehoboth largely retains a laid-back, welcoming vibe that makes it a perfect destination for summer fun, and a romantic weekend retreat during the quieter spring and fall shoulder seasons.

Although an increasing number of trendy, urbane businesses have opened here in recent years, Rehoboth’s beachfront is still lined with a bustling, honky-tonk boardwalk of saltwater taffy parlors, video arcades, and souvenir shops. Many visitors spend afternoons catching rays at the beach. Top-notch, gay-popular restaurants in Lewes include The Buttery (butteryrestaurant.com), which occupies a romantic Victorian house with a large veranda, and Café Azafran (cafeazafran. com), a Spanish-inspired tapas bistro open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - there’s a branch in Rehoboth, too.

Shopping and Dining Another popular daytime diversion is shopping. Rehoboth Avenue, the main drag, has plenty of fun retail as well as a few galleries. A block over, Baltimore Avenue is the hub of the town’s gay scene, home to a few boutiques, home-furnishing emporia, and the small but well-stocked Proud Bookstore, which carries GLBT books and gifts. Delaware has no sales tax, and out on Route 1 you’ll discover a bounty of outlet shopping centers. Back in town, take a break from browsing to grab a delicious lunch (maybe the best chicken salad sandwich you’ll ever taste) at Lori’s Café (lorisoyveycafe.com), or enjoy a snack or a latte at the Coffee Mill (coffeemillrehoboth.com), a cheerful coffeehouse. Rehoboth has an excellent dining scene, and several trendy newcomers seem to open each season. On the high end, the superb Blue Moon (bluemoonrehoboth.com) - site of the gay bar of the same name - turns out high-caliber contemporary American fare, like Maine lobster spaghetti and stout-brined Berkshire pork chops. Down the street, trendy Aqua Grill (aquagrillrehoboth.com) serves eclectic and reasonably priced international fare - Thai-mangochutney burgers, coconut shrimp, pot stickers - and then morphs into a fantastic gay video and dance bar, with a sprawling patio, as the evening proceeds. Drag brunches and T-dances are part of the fun on weekends. In the same neighborhood, Mixx (mixxrehoboth.com) is another high-energy, stylish restaurant and bar with a strong GLBT following, excellent food (macadamia-crusted local rockfish, seared scallops), and a see-and-be-seen cocktail scene - there’s live music some evenings.

Another hip spot where you’ll see plenty of family, Espuma (espuma-restaurant.com) serves contemporary Spanish and Mediterranean fare, including great lobster paella. And don’t miss the casual Purple Parrot (ppgrill.com), a good bet for burgers and diner fare; it’s a lively hangout for drinks and conversation, too, with a popular happy hour each day. Other notables include the Seafood Shack (seafoodshackrehoboth.com), which serves tasty fried-oyster po’boys and tender crab cakes and is known for its live entertainment, which includes piano, female vocalists, and acoustic bands. @DavidAtlantaGA // 47

Dos Locos (doslocos.com) is a great standby for Mexican food and cocktails. The ornately furnished, Asian-inspired Planet X (planetxcafe.com) scores high marks for its creative cocktails and unusual vegetarian and organic fare, from tofu sate with ginger-peanut sauce to grilled ahi fillet with asparagus, scallion herb salad, and lemon aioli. Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats (dogfish.com) is one of the most esteemed craft breweries in the country - it’s a fun place to sample a flight of unusual beers (Chicory Stout, Positive Contact Wit-style beer, Chateau Jiahu - which is brewed with rice from an ancient Chinese recipe), and the kitchen serves tasty modern pub fare, too.

Bewitched and For cocktails and entertainment, most folks drop by the Bedazzled B&B lounges at local restaurants to socialize before or after dinner, with the aforementioned Blue Moon, Mixx, Aqua, and Seafood Shack among the favorites. Early in the evening, a lot of lesbians and gay guys head to the Frogg Pond (thefroggpond.com) tavern for karaoke and conversation, or nearby Rehoboth Ale House (rehobothalehouse. com), which has live music some evenings and drag brunch on Sundays. If you’re into the leather-and-Levi’s scene, be sure to check out the Double L Bar (doublelbar. net), which has a patio, two pool tables, and a cruise-y vibe. Royal Rose Inn (royalroseinn.com) is right in the heart of Baltimore Avenue’s gay scene and has seven charming Accommodations and attractive rooms, plus a rooftop hot tub and sundeck. Rehoboth has no shortage of appealing, atmospheric accommodations. Among the top guest houses, the Lighthouse Inn (lighthouseinn.net) is an attractive 1904 house that’s steps from the beach and has light-filled, nautically themed guest rooms with gas fireplaces, refrigerators, and TVs with DVD - the top-floor rooms are especially romantic and roomy, and a separate twostory cottage sleeps up to four. Rehoboth Guest House (rehobothguesthouse.com), which is two blocks from the beach and steps from Baltimore Avenue nightlife and dining, is a vintage three-story inn with clean, basic rooms, a friendly and helpful innkeeper, and some of the best summer rates in town - the simplest rooms, which share a bathroom, start at just $120 midweek in high-season, which is a bargain considering the location and lovely grounds and sun decks. Other good bets include the spacious, spotless, and contemporary Cabana Gardens B&B (cabanagardens. com), whose rooftop sundeck is one of the best in town; the Silver Lake Guest House (silverlakeguesthouse.com), a large and luxurious property with great views of the lake after which it’s named and close proximity to Poodle Beach; and century-old At Melissa’s B&B (atmelissas. com), an inviting six-room inn in a leafy residential neighborhood close to the beach and restaurants - it’s a nice option for LGBT families, as one room has a king and bunk bed, and another has two queen beds. Perhaps no property in town draws more praise for its colorful personality (and high camp factor) than the lesbian-owned Bewitched and Bedazzled B&B (bewitchedbnb. com), a decadent 13-room property that consists of two neighboring houses. One is playfully furnished as a tribute to the ‘60s TV classic Bewitched, and the other pays tribute to the glamour of Hollywood, with dozens of autographed photos of movie stars. Another romantic option, the Canalside Inn (canalside-inn-rehoboth.com) overlooks the historic Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and offers 12 elegantly outfitted rooms done in cheerful, pastel hues. It’s a 20-minute walk from the beach, as is the spacious, well-kept Shore Inn (shoreinn.com), a mostly male 14-room resort popular for its festive pool, deck, and hot tub. Guys on the make should try the clothing-optional Ram’s Head (theramshead.com), which is a 15-minute drive from the beach and caters largely to butch leatherand-Levi’s types. If you’re partial to larger, more anonymous mainstream properties, Rehoboth has several chain hotels, including Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Comfort Inn out on Route 1. But to fully experience the bustle and charm of this increasingly hip and trendy gay getaway, try to book a room in town and spend as much time as possible wandering the boardwalk, beach, and quiet residential streets, places where the authentic Rehoboth springs vibrantly to life.

Screen Queen: By Chris Azzopardi

Mud For all the obvious Mark Twain-ness of Mud, director Jeff Nichols’ coming-of-age triumph stands on its own as a poignant piece of literary cinema. Ellis (standout Tye Sheridan) and his buddy Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) discover a fugitive, Mud (Matthew McConaughey, continuing his acting hot streak), living in a boat hung up in the trees. Longtime bayou dweller Tom Blankenship (Sam Shepard) cautions the teens about the runaway, telling them to keep their distance, but Ellis does just the opposite. In the midst of his parents’ separation (Sarah Paulson plays the mother), Ellis finds a silver lining in Mud’s romanticized version of love – the happy ending he wants not just for Mud, but also for himself – and assists in reuniting him with his true love (Reese Witherspoon). After Nichols’ frantic modern-day allegory Take Shelter, the first-rate filmmaker demonstrates no sign of waning with Mud. It’s a great American masterpiece. Nichols discusses his personal relationship with the film during the extras, which also includes a feature on the Arkansas shoot. 56 // davidatlanta.com

42 The relevance of famed ball player Jackie Robinson rings true today as prejudicial injustices persist. But if there’s anything to gain from Robinson’s story of breaking color barriers, it’s this: hope. The handsomely filmed biopic 42 doesn’t go deep enough (we’re left with a perfect heroic figure that’s just too perfect), but it’s a feel-good film that’s hard not to feel good about whenever Robinson (newcomer Chadwick Boseman) uses his badass baseball playing to silence the haters and close racial gaps. Boseman hits a homerun in the role, displaying the tenaciousness and believability of a baseball great. But as the gruff Brooklyn Dodgers exec Branch Rickey, Harrison Ford plays too close to sports-drama cliché. Also: Look out for Grey’s Anatomy gay T.R. Knight as the team’s publicist. 42 includes a couple short making-ofs – one on the green screen used to create the baseball field – and how Jackie Robinson helped integrate not just baseball, but the world. Spring Breakers The intention of Harmony Korine’s unsettling spring break dramatization – as discussed during the disc’s interview with the director – was to create a surreal cinematic experience with the same hypnotically wormy sensation of a pop song. Something you play over and over in your head. Something you never forget. The entire film, then, is the hook, and there’s no shaking the drugging, boozing, hyper-violent debauchery these four girls gets mixed up in while vacationing. Not only are images and sounds looped for mind takeover effect, but also, Spring Breakers is ridiculous. Highly and awesomely

amusing, but ridiculous. James Franco totally makes the movie as a delusional gangsta named Alien; he’s super proud of all his sheeyit and considers Britney Spears one of the greatest pop stars to walk the earth (of course he does). His scene at the piano, where he serenades his chickadees with “somethin’ inspirin’” (see: Spears’ “Everytime”), is classic kitsch. Extras include a three-part doc, outtakes from the priceless Franco monologue and a single deleted scene in which the girls make a chubby nerd get naked at gunpoint. The Ice Storm A ’90s pinnacle, timeless suburban drama The Ice Storm – debuting on Criterion Blu-ray – was one of Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee’s first motion-picture triumphs. Before award champs Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi, Lee directed a distinguished ensemble of established Hollywood A-listers (Sigourney Weaver, Kevin Kline and Joan Allen) and young wannabes (Tobey Maguire, Katie Holmes, Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood) in this rich, moving and darkly comical story of escapism set during the early Nixon-era ’70s. Political turmoil looms over connection seekers, where people have affairs with their neighbors and adolescents experiment. Lee’s commentary from the 2007 DVD is included, along with cast interviews and a chat with novelist Rick Moody. The Place Beyond the Pines In Derek Cianfrance’s ambitious follow-up to Blue Valentine, it’s not just Ryan Gosling’s bare chest causing those heart palpitations. A harrowing narrative spanning 15 years, it’s a tense sketch of fathers, sons and their unbreakable bonds, where choices are made and unfavorable consequences result. Gosling, a low-income dad who robs banks to provide for his kid, continues to forge complicated roles and excel at them; Bradley Cooper, as a cop, makes you forget The Hangover Part III. It’s a gripping, emotionally cogent saga slighting, unfortunately, some of the nuance that made Valentine the better film. Rainbow Days at Six Flags Rainbow Days return to Atlanta for another year of community fun. The weekend kicks off Friday, August 9 with the official Rainbow Days preparty at Blake’s. The party starts at 9 p.m. Saturday, August 10 brings Rainbow Days to Six Flags, beginning at 10 a.m. Dining and entertainment begin at 6 p.m. with performances by Twinn City, Dylan Michael, Alissah Brooks, J. IN THEATRES THIS WEEK Blue Jasmine: One of Woody Allen’s best films from his recent output features an Oscar-worthy performance from Cate Blanchett. Elysium: Neill Blomkamp, creator of surprise hit District 9, creates a bigger-budget sci-fi action tale that tackles healthcare, immigration and the 1%, with a talented cast led by Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Lovelace: Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard star in this flawed biopic on Linda Lovelace, star of the adult film classic Deep Throat. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters: Box office be damned. This sequel to 2010’s underperforming Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief makes it to theaters with some improvements over its predecessor. Definitely aimed for young adults, though. Planes: Cars and Cars 2 are considered two clunkers in Pixar’s otherwise standout oeuvre. For this spinoff, Pixar’s name isn’t even attached, so let that be your warning. We’re the Millers: Jason Sudeikis plays a low-level pot dealer who gathers a group of people together to play his family (including Jennifer Aniston as a stripper) so he can smuggle large quantities of marijuana into the country from Mexico.
