For Your Entertainment
To those who know me, it’s no secret that I’m a total entertainment junkie. Movies, music, television, theatre – you name it, and I probably have at least some knowledge of what’s going on. It’s part of what makes my job here fun, too. I get to immerse myself in pop culture regularly, and then share what I know with others.

By Romeo San Vicente Anthony Rapp has new jobs to make the rent Original star of Rent Anthony Rapp has joined the cast of the new musical If/Then, from the creative team behind Next to Normal. He’ll reunite with former Rent co-star Idina Menzel for the show, one that centers on a woman about to turn 40 who moves to New York in the hopes of starting a brand new life. The musical opens March 2014, which shouldn’t interfere too much with Rapp’s need to promote his new film, Opening Night. It’s a comedy from Ryan Dixon, Nena Girsh and Jack Henry Robbins, with Robbins directing. Co-starring Cheyenne Jackson, the story centers on a high school drama club, their teacher and a visiting B-list TV star, which makes it sound something like a kinder, gentler Waiting for Guffman. It begins production this summer in Los Angeles so fans of anything that smells Rent- or Glee-adjacent can begin obsessing now. Philip Seymour Hoffman and John Cameron Mitchell are Trending Down Showtime has given a pilot order to something that sounds very promising, something that doesn’t involve vampires or dragons. A dark comedy, Trending Down, will star Philip Seymour Hoffman as a middle-aged man who finds himself facing career obsolescence when his advertising agency is sold into new hands. Hoffman will co-star with Kathryn Hahn (Revolutionary Road ) and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) will direct the pilot that’s being described as “a blistering attack on our youth-obsessed culture… a darkly comic examination of what it means to matter. Or matter not.” In other words, it’s about what’s 12 // davidatlanta.com
going to happen to everyone when the cast of Girls takes their jobs away from them. And who better than Hoffman, a master of portraying miserable characters, comic or not, to embody the anxiety of the age? Can’t wait. Pee-Wee Herman returns 2014 is going to be an excellent year for television because that’s when Pee-Wee Herman will be back on it. Children (and adults) of the 1980s who worshipped at the altar of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse will see their hero return next year in a new TV project whose details aren’t fully known just yet. Paul Reubens, Pee-Wee’s creator, is 60 now and still, thankfully, happy to put on that too-tight suit. And he isn’t spilling much information beyond the fact that, along with the long-anticipated Pee-Wee movie – to be produced by Judd Apatow – the show is a go and it will not necessarily be a reboot of Playhouse. One off or not, any Pee-Wee is better than no Pee-Wee at all. And as for that movie, if the Muppets can reboot successfully in theaters and remind the world how much they loved “Rainbow Connection,” now it’s “Tequila”’s time back in the sun as our national dancing-on-bars anthem. Amber Tamblyn is Two and a Half Men’s lesbian Usually when a series is as long in the tooth as Two and a Half Men, the producers bring in a cute kid to boost the ratings. But with Angus T. Jones all grown up and no longer a series regular (not to mention notoriously bad-mouthing his childhood job as “filth”), the hit sitcom’s producers – already having replaced Charlie Sheen with Ashton Kutcher – are playing by their own rules once again.

They’re bringing in a lesbian. Amber Tamblyn will join the show as Charlie’s long lost daughter Jenny, who moves to Los Angeles to become an actor and who shares all of her late father’s tastes, including his taste in women. It’s the coolest of possibilities, a bad-girl lesbian on prime time TV and not even wearing an Orange is the New Black prison jumpsuit. Guess it’s time to watch our first episode of Two and a Half Men. @DavidAtlantaGA // 13
creep
of the week: David Usher
Usher claims there’s no such thing as marriage equality, and that such a thing would actually create three classes of marriage, with lesbians benefiting over heterosexuals and gay men because women would marry each other as part of a diabolical scheme to enslave men. “Most women will bear children by men outside the [same-sex] marriage – often by pretending they are using birth control when they are not. Entrapped men become economically-conscripted third parties to these marriages, but get nothing in return,” Usher writes. I’d like to point out Usher’s use of the words “most” and “often.” He’s not saying, “Hey, here’s a crazy thing that could happen maybe.” He’s saying, “This is definitely going to happen and it’s going to happen the majority of the time.” Which is totally insane. Usher continues, “This is a significant advantage compelling women who would otherwise become (or are) single mothers to choose to marry a woman instead of a man. They can combine incomes, double-up on tax-free child support and welfare benefits, decrease costs, and double the human resources available to raise children and run their household.” He even adds that lesbos in name only (LINOs) would “often” keep boyfriends on the side and take their money, too. The bottom line? Clever bitches be hustlin’. And it’s not just straight men in danger here. Usher argues, “In most cases, [gay] men will become un-consenting ‘fathers’ by reproductive entrapment.” How a woman tricks a gay man into knocking her up is not made clear, however, he does use the word “most,” which means he believes that the majority of gay men will become duped daddies.

T
hink back to all of the times you’ve heard straight women say things like, “Ugh, I wish I could be a lesbian, it would be so much easier.” And have you ever wondered why Judy Brady’s “I Want A Wife” essay from the early 70s is required reading in any and all Women’s Studies classes? Because ladies ain’t want no husbands. Oh, but ladies do want babies. If only there existed a way for women to marry each other, yet still be able to get some impregnating dick on the side…
If same-sex marriage is legalized Usher says, “economic advantage will still drive women’s marital decisions,” because, duh, women were gold diggers before marriage equality and they’ll be gold diggers after it, too. And so women will become a bunch of welfare dykes getting knocked up with bastard children for the fat government bennies. Usher claims that men will be “redlined” out of marriage and the “welfare state” will spiral out of control, putting the burden of supporting all of these penis-free families on the dwindling heterosexual tax base.
There’s nothing more terrifying to a right-wing nut than a lesbian couple raising children on welfare, which Usher makes very clear when he writes, “This is far more dangerous than ObamaCare, abortion, capital punishment, or Thankfully, David Usher, president of the Center for Marriage excessive gun regulations.” Policy, has it all figured out and he mansplained the whole thing in an Aug. 21 post on Renew America’s website. Something worse than ObamaCare? Than abortion? Than gun control? Considering Usher’s essay is titled, “Our Basically, Usher argues that once women can legally marry last chance to save traditional marriage,” I would say other women, feminists will take over, using men solely to he is doomed. But he certainly does have one hell of an empty their testes of sperm and their wallets of money. imagination. 14 // davidatlanta.com

NATALIA
KILLS IS TROUBLE BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN
Natalia Kills will be the first one to admit it: she’s a goddamn problem. That’s a frequently repeated line in “Problem,” the lead single to Kills’ sophomore album, Trouble. It’s also rather apt. Kills first broke into the pop music scene back in 2010 with the release of single “Mirrors,” a hit on the dance charts here in the U.S. A few other singles and a debut album, Perfectionist, followed over the next couple of years. The recurring theme in Kills’ music: her desire to be a perfectionist in life, and everything associated with the successes and failures relating to perfection. With her sophomore album, Kills is revealing more about why she wanted to create that image at the time. Trouble draws inspiration from her life, with a specific focus on the messiness and negative aspects of that life. Before the release of Trouble, I spoke with Kills about her inspiration in making the album, how it compares to her previous work, her gay fan base and more.

For people who aren’t familiar with you or your music, why should they listen to your music? That’s such a hard question. I don’t think about those types of things. I guess maybe it’s selfish of me, but I make my music for myself, you know? So…if I’m particularly haunted by a memory, or really enjoyed this crazy, wild night with a boy I think I’m in love with, something that just can’t leave me alone from my childhood or I really badly regret something from when I was a teenager – and I was really, really a bad teenager – I just write all the feelings down. I write the ideas down, you know, and that’s how a song happens. It’s hard for me to say why I might be feeling anything because I kind of just write songs about the things I find appealing, and the things I can sort of remember the most – the memories I have that stand out in my mind the most, and what’s the most meaningful stuff to me, and just how to find fun and freedom and release in those kinds of things.
”Saturday Night” is more about me shrugging it off and saying, “You know what? No matter how fucked up things were, somehow things can still be fucked up now and life goes on, no matter what. No matter what, Saturday night will always roll around, whether you feel like it’s the end of the world this time or it’s just another Saturday night. Whether it’s a good one or a bad one, you just have to deal with it. That’s what I did.” Of the songs on Trouble, which one’s your personal favorite, and why? I definitely love “Saturday Night.” Sometimes, when I sing “Saturday Night,” I feel like everything’s okay, everything’s going to be fine even when it’s really not.
But I have a song on the album I really love. I love the song “Daddy’s Girl.” It’s a love song I wrote to my dad. It’s kind of like the love story between my parents. When I was young, my parents were really, really rich, and my dad was very I’m curious: how does Trouble compare conceptu- generous, and I had this luxurious life. Then my dad got ally to your previous album, Perfectionist? in trouble with the police. They took everything. He went to jail, then went to trial, then went to prison, and we lost You know, when I was writing Perfectionist, I had just come everything. My family suffered hard for it. I was a teenager out of London. I had ruined my life. I had been in trouble with nothing, completely broke. with the police. I had terrible fights with my boyfriend. I had nowhere to live. I had no money. And I moved to Hollywood, “Daddy’s Girl” is about me finding out about what true love is chasing this dream, kind of just making it somehow, [and] for the very first time. It’s not someone buying you a million getting out of the bullshit. Perfectionist was really about me presents at Christmas. It’s not someone throwing luxury wanting to make everything perfect, when everything was and jewelry and cash and a gorgeous house and holidays not. At the time, that’s where my mind was. I was full of and vacations. It’s really that moment of knowing that, no desire and wanting control. matter what they’ve done wrong or what they’re accused of, you know they’re a good person because they have a good Trouble is really about now standing back and realizing that, heart, and they’re being treated unfairly, considering what you know, I was wild. I was out of control. The reason that their intentions were for it. There are some lyrics in that nothing was perfect was mostly because of me. I joined a song that are just like, [sings] “You know I’ll ride with you / cult. I had a terrible manager, terrible record deal. I got a job Right through this fire of hell.” I really feel like, if you really as an actress on TV, and then I quit! And then I had to work love somebody, you ride with them through the fire of hell. other jobs, even as a waitress, and I got fired from everything. No matter what they do, you’ll be there whenever they call. I used to think, “I want this wonderful life. Why can’t it just I don’t want to let anyone down. When I really love them, happen?” Trouble is me realizing that the reason nothing was perfect, the reason everything was messed up – a lot of it had to do with whether I was trouble, or troubled, or if trouble was just chasing me and hunting me down everywhere I went. The current single is “Saturday Night.” Can you tell me about the inspiration behind the song, as well as the music video? I wanted to be very literal and raw and honest on this album. I know having a bit of a shifty childhood should make you want to be an advocate for it, or feel defiant, or feel like an overcomer, but I don’t really feel like any of that. I feel like some of my worst moments, some of my real moments of madness, have defined me to this day, and not necessarily in a good way. I wanted to make my whole album, but especially the song “Saturday Night,” like the soundtrack to my life. Not me trying to stand up and be healed and be safe and be better, and say “I am an overcomer” and “I am succeeding,” you know? @DavidAtlantaGA // 17
I don’t care how the world sees them. I know that they’re good to me, and I think they’re a good person, and that’s all that matters, and I’m going to stay true to that. Can you tell me about the cover art for Trouble? I know you incorporated a lot of different elements into the artwork for it. Yeah, I did. Well, this whole album is very personal for me. Almost all of my life stories are in this album. A lot of my madness and wildness, memories and such. I wanted for the cover art to really include the bits that define me. I wanted to make a collage of the memories, the way the lyrics from my album [are] a collage of my memories, who I am, everything I think and feel, and my opinions and my damage and my madness, happiness. I wanted, for the cover, all these objects. We went and found the exact champagne my dad used to drink. There are handcuffs from when I was in trouble as a teenager with the police. The lipstick is from when I was watching my mom be glamorous and be luxurious, thinking that I was going to grow up with that kind of life. There’s pearls and roses and all of the gestures that all of the boys have given to me, trying to fix me, trying to faze me as a young woman now that I’ve thrown away, ripped apart, and ruined. I wanted all these elements. We took all these pictures and printed them into photos, and like a little girl with some kind of inspiration board, cutting out her favorite outfits from magazines, dreaming about being able to afford those clothes – I kind of did that, and stuck all these images together, and took a picture of that. And that’s how I made the album artwork – I literally just wanted to go back to being 14 again, cutting out all the things that I see and that mean something to me, like photos in a magazine, and just making something that looks beautiful and emotional and fun and silly. On the album artwork, I wanted it to be like this massive trip, kind of melting feelings to it. There’s nail polish dripping down the sides at the top. It’s kinda like when I was 16 and I left home. I lived alone and felt like a grown-up. “I’m gonna put my lipstick on and my high heels on. I’m gonna paint my nails.” But every time I tried to paint my nails, it would end up completely fucked. I basically ended up painting my whole finger, and the table too, and it was dripping everywhere. And that kind of sensation is madness, that melting, dripping feeling of thinking you’re in control, and you can do this and live life better than everyone else around you that’s fucked up. And you make a mess of it. I really wanted to find a way to capture that feeling, and that’s why I put the dripping pink nail polish down the sides. It’s how I feel.

flashing my underwear. I would go onstage wearing fishnets, a thong and a mink coat, like in the “Problem” video. In the U.S., gay audiences seem to have latched on to your music. What do you think attracts gay audiences specifically to your music? I think it’s that they’re fucking fabulous and don’t take shit, and they’re also very emotional. And I think when you’ve got all those things figured out, like the gay community – when you’ve really been through it, and you have something to be proud of, and really, really defiant about, and that’s something we have in common. Overcoming. I’ve overcome and not overcome my best and worst moments in my own life, and because I choose to be open and raw, and really sing about it, and not really apologize or make excuses for it, not try and solve. There’s no cure or remedy for who I am. I feel that’s the sensation that I maybe can connect with my incredible gay fans. That feeling of not wanting to be “cured” or “fixed” or whatever society considers “good” or “moral,” or what parents consider “decent.” I reject a lot of those notions, and I feel like being able to be happy in yourself, no matter whether anyone thinks is good or bad, is the thing that connects us so much.

he end of 2013 is shaping up to be an exciting time for new music releases. The Beginning of
OSCAR SEASON 2013 BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN

ow that the box office has gone through yet another turbulent summer, with some surprising hits (like World War Z ) and a surprisingly high number of misses (including White House Down and After Earth), it’s the time of year where smaller films and Oscar bait start to take over the weekly new releases at theaters around the country. So what can we expect to see through the rest of the year? Let’s take a look.

Chris Hemsworth came into fame as Thor, but we get to see him show off his acting chops more in Rush, which comes from Frost/Nixon director Ron Howard and writer Peter Morgan. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. The two have each been the subject of gay rumors for years. Now, we get to see them on screen together in Prisoners, which follows two families and a detective as they try to find out what’s happened to two kidnapped young girls. In other words, if you were looking for some hot Jackman/Gyllenhaal action, stick to your fantasies. Prisoners comes out Sept. 20. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the best examples of a child actor making it as an adult. He’s worked his way up through the indie film circuit to become a box office star. October Just going by the trailers, Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity is going to be intense. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as astronauts stranded in space with limited air once their space shuttle is destroyed. Gravity lands in theaters Oct. 4. Oscar contender alert: Tom Hanks stars in Captain Phillips (out Oct. 11), a biopic of the captain taken hostage by Somali Pirates in 2009. The film comes from director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum), and buzz is already swelling for Hanks’ performance.

Chloë Grace Moretz takes on one of the most famous horror characters of all time when the remake of Carrie unleashes on Oct. 18. The film, directed by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry), also stars Julianne Moore as Carrie’s overly religious mother. Even though Carrie is one of those iconic films that feels like it shouldn’t be remade, the casting and directing choices – along with the way school bullying has changed over the past few decades – makes this film a must-see.
November After years of making duds like Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Fool’s Gold, Matthew McConaughey has made a bit of a comeback over the past few years with a string of critically-acclaimed films like Mud and Killer Joe. Now he’s getting a lot of Oscar buzz for Dallas Buyers Club, based on a true story. McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a homophobic man who is diagnosed with HIV in 1986. He works with an HIV-positive, transgender woman (played by Jared Leto) to smuggle alternative HIV medications into the U.S. to extend his life past the 30 days given to him by doctors. Dallas Buysrs Club opens in theaters Nov. 1, expanding throughout November. Fans of British films Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Love, Actually will want to turn out for the newest film from writer/director Richard Curtis, who was responsible for all of those films. About Time stars Domhnall Gleeson as Tim, who discovers he can travel through time and change what has happened in his life, which he initially corrects by dating Mary (Rachel McAdams). When he accidentally erases their past, though, he has to work to win her back. About Time comes out November 1. Marvel fans are already preparing for the next post-Avengers Marvel film, Thor: The Dark World. The film, which takes place a year after the events of The Avengers, finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) battling to save the Nine Realms, reuniting with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), and…well, dealing with the troublemaking Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Thor: The Dark World releases Nov. 8. Are the odds still in her favor? Jennifer Lawrence returns to Panem in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and with new characters, a new release timeframe for the series, and a new director (Francis Lawrence, taking over for Gary Ross), we’ll see if this new entry meets or exceeds the bar set by last year’s The Hunger Games. Catching Fire arrives in theaters on Nov. 22.

FALL TELEVISION
PREVIEW BY DYL AN MICHAEL
F
all, the time for leaves to change, kids to go back to school and, for my favorite part: new television shows! As with every year, some favorites get cancelled (R.I.P. Smash) while others get renewed, season after season. There are a ton of new shows coming out this fall, some that look great and some…well, it was a nice try. I break down a few and give the yay or nay on whether they’re working checking out! The 100 (CW): “Nearly a century after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, a spaceship sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth to investigate the possibility of re-colonizing.” 97 years after a nuclear apocalypse killed everyone on earth, and all the survivors live in a spaceship, above earth. The earth needed 100 years to become livable again, so with 3 years left to go, 100 prisoners get sent down as an experiment. They decide to stay on Earth and take their chances building a new colony. This looks like another run-of-themill, end-of-days type of show. Nothing new and interesting about it but it’s from the producers of The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl, so they’re keeping it in the family, at least.
The 100 42 // davidatlanta.com
Almost Human (Fox): “This action-packed buddy cop show is set in a future in which LAPD officers like John Kennex are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids like Dorian.” Obviously set in the future, this premise actually shows a little bit of promise. Karl Urban plays the main character, John, who is partnered up with a robot named Dorian, played by the gorgeous Michael Ealy. Karl’s character is a wounded, emotionally broken cop who gets partnered up with Dorian, a “crazy android” that has some “technical bugs”. Dorian, unlike the other androids, has emotions and thoughts. Together, they create a cute buddy-cop premise that is endearing, but only on Dorian’s side. Back in the Game (ABC): “When Terry, a divorced single mother, moves in with her estranged father, a beer-swilling former baseball player, she reluctantly starts coaching her son’s Little League team and is drawn back into the world of sports she vowed to leave behind.” The preview for this show actually had me laughing out loud. It’s an old premise, the rag-tag baseball team that rises up

and becomes stars. Yeah, yeah, we’ve all seen it. I don’t think that this show will last particularly long; one, maybe two seasons. However, James Caan is always hysterical; Maggie Lawson, who plays Terry, is adorable; and the ga— feminine little boy on the team, who only wants to sing “Born This Way,” cracks my shit up. It’ll be a cute laugh about sports bringing family together. Bad Teacher (CBS): “Based on the Cameron Diaz film, a sexy, foul-mouthed divorcée becomes a teacher to find her next husband. “ There wasn’t much information about this show, however, if it’s anything like the original film, I’m gonna die for it. I mean, obviously it’s made for television so they have to tone everything down, from the language to the raunchiness. And let’s be honest here. The raunchy, dirty, filthy things Cameron Diaz said in that film made it as amazing as it was. I don’t see this getting renewed for a second season, because I don’t think they can make the story line that interesting, unless they can add in the original actress who played Amy Squirrel. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get schooled on this one. Believe (NBC): “An unlikely relationship develops between a young girl with a gift and a man sprung from prison who has been tasked with protecting her from the evildoers who covet her power.” Interesting concept here. A little girl with undisclosed super powers forms a bond with a convict sprung from prison by a priest, so that he can protect the girl from an unknown bad guy. We never quite figure out, from the trailer, what the little girl’s powers are. We see her screaming, levitating stuff around, but it never identifies what she is/does. And it never says why the convict is the one chosen to protect her. But I guess those are details that are revealed the more you watch the show. It looks cute, and it will be written and executive produced by Alfonso Cuarón, of Harry Potter fame, and also executive produced by J.J. Abrams of Lost fame. So, let’s see if it can hold up to its predecessors.
The Crazy Ones is bound to be a hit. Robin Williams is a comedic genius who plays the father of Sarah Michelle Gellar, who has perfected her “ice queen” role. Together, the duo run an advertising agency based out of Chicago, and together, create a show that will pull at your heart strings and make you laugh. You’ll love Robin William’s (as you usually do) and you’ll love SMG for being such a cold bitch (as you usually do).
Dracula (NBC): “This version finds Dracula in London posing as an American entrepreneur who wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. But his true plan — to seek revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier — is thwarted when he falls hopelessly in love with a woman named Mina, who seems to be a reincarnation of his Ah, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the guy from Jumanji in the dead wife.” same show? Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but this show The Crazy Ones (CBS): “A single-camera, half-hour workplace comedy about a father-and-daughter team in the world of advertising. Oscar winner Robin Williams plays the dad, while Sarah Michelle Gellar is the daughter.”
@DavidAtlantaGA // 43
Dracula Luckily for NBC, Dracula is one of those characters that you never get tired of; that you can never revamp too many times. This time, with the delicious Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the main character, it will give you more eye candy than Interview With a Vampire ever could (Sorry, Brad!). The plot is based on the aspect of revenge, with Dracula being the protagonist this time, rather than always the bad guy. He is out to exact revenge on those who wronged him long ago Talk about holding a grudge, huh? This will be a cute show, but I think it’s NBC’s attempt at something as successful as ABC’s Revenge. If nothing else, we can at least watch Jonathan, right?
getting waffles, or the mom who doesn’t want her babies to grow up, all the way to the son who only wants a set of keys “which means a car which means freedom!” Based on the trailer alone, I think this show could replace the void that The New Normal left and give Modern Family a straight run for its money.
Friends with Better Lives (CBS): “A group of thirtysomething friends, including gynecologists Bobby and Will and model Jules, each think the other has it better.” Ever since they pulled the plug on Don’t Trust the B---- In Apartment 23, I’ve yearning for some more James Van Der Beek. This time, he’s accompanied by Brooklyn Decker and Kevin Connelly in yet another primetime sitcom that will probably be canceled after one season. I love the Beek as much as the next person, but unless this is comedy gold in hiding, it won’t last.
James Van Der Beek
The Goldbergs (ABC): “A multigenerational, dysfunctional Wonder Years set in simpler times, inspired by Adam F. Goldberg’s own experience growing up in the ‘80s in a screwed-up but loving family” If you remember 8 tracks, side ponies, and jean jackets then you’ll love this show. The Goldbergs are a dysfunctional family who only communicate one way: at the top of their lungs. Set in the 80s, it’s a total true throwback to being a teenager, or younger, growing up and all the things you went through. Based on the trailer alone, the cast of characters they have will all end up touching your heart, whether it’s the grandfather whose best times are spent with his grandkids 44 // davidatlanta.com

For those fans of the heavier side of music, head out to Philips Arena on Oct. 24 for Nine Inch Nails. Rockin’ it since 1988, lead man Trent Reznor brings a sexy dark side to the stage with songs like “Closer” and “Hurt.” If you’ve got kids, it’s time to bite the bullet and dive into the crazed scene of tweens and teens for Selena Gomez on Oct. 26. Gomez started her career as an actress on Barney, and later started singing and recording, while maintaining her acting career, getting a staring role on the kids show Wizards of Waverly Place. You might want to bring ear plugs, though: tween and teen girls have the rare ability to scream at the top of their lungs for the duration of an entire concert. But sorry, there will probably be no Bieber-sightings at this show. If you prefer to get some fresh fall air with your music, head out to Aaron’s Amphitheater at Lakewood on Sept. 12 for Depeche Mode. Flash back to the days of big hair and stirrup pants with the English electronic band that hasn’t stopped making music since they first broke onto the scene in 1980. Southern Comfort The transgender community of Atlanta, friends and allies, is happy to welcome back the Southern Comfort Conference in its 24th year, from Sept. 3–8 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia. The four-day symposium supports and educates the “T” of our LGBT community, which unfortunately seems to periodically fade into the background. It is important that all members of the LGBT community have the same opportunities and availability of resources and support as everyone else. For this, the Southern Comfort Conference is a must-attend. For more on Southern Comfort, check out our article from last week’s issue at davidatlanta.com, or visit sccatl.org.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19): You might have a different interpretation of the word perseverance than the guy you keep sending roses and chocolates. To you it’s the relentless pursuit of a goal; he calls it stalking. Oh well, you say tomato, he says tomahto.

all comers today. Entertaining many suitors will be good for your ego, even the guy with the third eyeball sticking out of his forehead. Quantity will trump quality for you today, mainly because you’re not getting any younger, dammit!
GEMINI (May 21- June 20): You’ll need to tell fact from fiction today. A new squeeze told you he’s the CEO of his own startup. Yet you’re always footing the movie and dinner bills. That startup may be in his mind, and he’ll prove to be nothing more than another letdown.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Focus on the smaller details of your new man today rather than on the more obvious bigger ones. Can you live with the nervous tic and weird fingernails? Too many peculiarities and you won’t care about those other features, no matter how huge they are.

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): With
a recipe for disaster by inviting recent ex’s to a dinner party tonight. Tensions may reach a boiling point and it could be three long courses of anger, tears and hostility. Oh well, at least your creme brulee will be a hit.
great perseverance and quiet dedication, you’ve finally snagged the man of your dreams. But you’ve found that the rewards weren’t worth the effort. You may have to throw this one back, although don’t expect it to go down without a fight.

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): The stories imparted by our older brothers should be more cautionary than entertaining. Men are making the same mistakes all over again, and those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Save a life today. Educate those on the fringe.
world today where everything right is wrong and vice versa. You’ll slap a guy in the face and he’ll be turned on. Another guy will burst into tears when you say his hair looks nice. Today will be anything if not interesting.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): You’re in the mood to work your voodoo tonight. Going on the prowl will make you feel sexy and feral. Make your intentions clear by dressing the part and letting your body language do the talking. You can’t attract bees without a little honey.

afternoon cocktails may quickly devolve into an evening of promiscuous behavior. Thankfully, you may not remember a thing tomorrow morning, but you’ll wonder what happened to your underwear and how you got that tattoo on your bum.
PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Using electrical language to impart words of affection don’t have the same impact for a Luddite like you. You’re sure Shakespeare never used an emoticon heart to express love and the words to that song from ‘Casablanca’ aren’t ‘A :-* is just a :-*.’

I know they say to go slow, but I’m just Russian to have more gay anal sex.
Girl, just because you changed your last name to a celebrity’s doesn’t mean you are one! Being flamboyant is completely okay. It takes more balls to be yourself than to fake being masculine.
Would the men in Atlanta please stop bringing women friends to the gay male strip bars with them? Seriously, stop it!
76 // davidatlanta.com
How many people complaining about Creep of the Week also complain about Bitch, Please?
Where do straight people keep all their trophies for “knowing someone was gay all along”?
I’m about ready for Lady Gaga to change her name to “Björk for Dummies.”
Sometimes I get the urge to post an underwear shot on Instagram. Then I remember my family members will see it. Then I remember they’ve seen worse. I recently met DJ David Knapp spinning in Atlanta. It’s so nice that there are still genuine people in the party scene. Plus his boyfriend is hot! I’m all for some homoerotic tension between Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck – I mean, Superman and Batman. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
