‘Don Jon’ Scores

This week’s cover story is an interview with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the writer/director/star of Don Jon, which hits theaters later this month. It’s a remarkably accomplished film that’s easily one of my favorites of the year, and not (just) because of his sexy physical transformation. The story of Don Jon is all about romantic relationships, and some of the problems that can form in how people approach them. The fact that the film’s being sold as a comedy (and it is – there are some genuinely hilarious parts to the film) makes the dramatic moments all the more palpable.

By Romeo San Vicente Welcome out, Wentworth and Whishaw Actors going public with their sexual orientation may be a more and more frequent occurrence, but it’s still a big deal when they do it. And it’s especially good when it feels like their own decision, rather than, say, being hounded by the press to hurry up and get it over with after you’re seen kissing your personal trainer in public and then buying a house with her (or him). So welcome to the other side of gayness, Wentworth Miller (who chose to come out as a political statement when he refused to attend a Russian film festival) and Ben Whishaw (who apparently just got around to it being a relevant topic of conversation). Both men have upcoming projects in the works: Miller, the former Prison Break star who also wrote this year’s thriller Stoker, has just wrapped The Loft. Co-starring James Marsden, Karl Urban and Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet, it’s a thriller – due in theaters during the summer of 2014 – about five men who share a loft for extramarital affairs until one day the body of an unknown woman is found in the clandestine love nest. Meanwhile, the hardworking Whishaw has five projects on his plate, including the new Terry Gilliam film The Zero Theorem, starring as Moby Dick author Herman Melville in Ron Howard’s The Heart of the Sea and, of course, he’s got Daniel Craig to deal with as he continues his role of Q in the next James Bond movie. Meanwhile, other actors, it’s your turn; who’s next?

of the week: Ray Rooney Jr.

Of course, few people outside of the homosexual coven know this closely guarded secret. And it may well have stayed hidden forever if it weren’t for the bravery of intrepid American Family Association blogger Ray Rooney Jr. On Sept. 6, the AFA website published a blog post by Rooney titled, “The Real Problem with Homosexuality” in which he tore the veil off of this sordid subject. “What I find perverse about homosexuality is the insistence from the gay community that I should know about their sexual proclivities,” Rooney wrote. “Normal people understand that sex is an extremely intimate and therefore private act. I would find it troubling, if not disgusting, for anyone to talk publicly about what kind of sex they like to practice. Normal people do not want to broadcast to the world the details of their sex lives. There is something wrong with those who want complete strangers to know who they like to have sex with.” In other words, homosexuals are icky because they just won’t stop it with the sex talk already. It’s as if poor Rooney is trapped in a gay episode of Taxi Cab Confessions. Keep in mind that Rooney’s criteria for sexual disclose does not apply to opposite-sex couples. A man can hold hands with a woman or display a photo of her and the child they created together on his desk at the office and no one accuses him of shoving his “sexual proclivities” down their throats. But if you dare be public about your sexual orientation, then you are perverse, abnormal, disgusting, and have something wrong with you, according to Rooney.

By D’Anne Witkowski

hen it comes to heterosexuals and homosexuals, there is a glaringly obvious difference between the two. And, no, it isn’t that gay men are far more likely to do drag than straight men or that lesbians tend to populate drumming circles more than straight women. Nope, the answer is: relationships. You see, heterosexuals form relationships with people. And homosexuals just have sex with them. This explains why when you go to a heterosexual couple’s home there are frequently photos hung on the wall of the husband and wife, perhaps at their wedding, or maybe a casual snapshot of the two embracing.

“I believe homosexuality is wrong,” Rooney continues. “But even though I believe I have good reasons for opposing homosexuality as a normative lifestyle based on science, medicine, and faith, that is not why I strongly oppose it. I believe anyone who insists everyone know what they do in their bedroom and with whom is perverse. Normal people do not define themselves solely on the basis of who they are sexually attracted to.” First of all, Rooney does not have real, actual science or medicine to back him up. But facts and the AFA have never really cared much for each other, so that’s to be expected.

Secondly, the idea that “normal” people aren’t defined “solely on the basis of whom they are sexually attracted to” is an interesting claim considering how strongly Rooney defends “traditional” (a.k.a. “one penis/one vagina”) marriage. Under his own definition, he is flaunting his sexuality and is However, if you go to a homosexual couple’s house you’ll see therefore a pervert. that, yes, they also have photos hung on the wall, but unlike the happy vacation photos their opposite-sex counterparts Conveniently, Rooney ignores his argument’s flawed logic, display, gays and lesbians only hang photos of genitalia on choosing, instead, to demonize gays and lesbians by reductheir walls. Dick pics and beaver shots plaster every availing their relationships to some kind of perverted animal able inch of wall space. Because gays and lesbians don’t instinct. OH JOE Gordon-Levitt talks Don Jon sex, ‘proud’ gay kiss and the harm in thinking he’s the ‘perfect man’

BY CHRIS A Z ZOPARDI 16 // davidatlanta.com

photos: Relativity Media

Who doesn’t see Joseph GordonLevitt as the “perfect man”? The one man who knows him best: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. And neither should you, he says. After playing a gay hustler in Mysterious Skin, a Mormon homophobe in Latter Days and Batman’s cool sidekick in The Dark Knight Rises, the actor takes on a porn-obsessed womanizer in his latest film Don Jon, a sex comedy he wrote, directed and stars in that contends there’s more to a person than meets the eye. Surely, plenty of Gordon-Levitt meets the eye in Don Jon: that chest, those arms and all the near nakedness of the New Jersey lothario he plays. Yeah, it’s easy to see why people might think he’s pretty perfect. In our interview, Gordon-Levitt discusses the dangers of believing he’s the ideal mate, contributing to the gay rights movement and what he’s really doing during those masturbation scenes in Don Jon.

videos, but they’re all very edited and cropped and they’re all very quick and sort of sanitized to fit into a Hollywood Let’s talk about this intense, seductive look on movie, if you want to call this movie a Hollywood movie. It’s your face during those masturbation scenes. What sort of an atypical one, but it’s a movie about mainstream were you actually thinking about? And were you culture, so I wanted it to become part of mainstream culture. really watching porn? I always intended it to be that way. I think, in that way, it’s self-referential and it wouldn’t be as strong or effective or Nah, I wasn’t really looking at porn. But I was pretending I as complete a film if it were outside of those Hollywood filmwas looking at porn. making traditions. I’ve never pretended to watch porn. [Laughs] I have now!

How much did you want to get away with in this movie, and how much did you actually get away with?

There’s a bit of sex in the movie – and you’re alWhat’s in the movie is exactly what I wanted it to be. I wrote ways the one having it. How do you direct yourself it exactly that way. I don’t think it’s all that sexually explicit; in a sex scene? there are some very modified and stylized clips from pornography videos because that’s a central symbol in the movie, See, the sex scenes – with one exception – are very, very but there aren’t really any realistic sex scenes. It’s not a highly stylized and they’re not so much scenes that play out movie that’s about shocking you with anything graphic. in real time; they’re more like narrated storybook versions of a look inside the mind of this guy, and so shooting them is This film demonstrates what you’ve discussed in like putting together a puzzle. They’re made of lots of little the past: that the media – the films we watch, the pieces. When you put the puzzle together it seems like a sex music we listen to, and so on – can really screw scene, but when you’re shooting it, it’s not like that at all. with our minds. When choosing films, do you think about how much influence you have on the people This is a movie that has sex at its core, and who watch them? we see plenty of boobs but never any Joseph Gordon-Levitt bits. Was it a conscious decision I do, yeah. It’s always a balance between trying to keep for you to avoid being completely naked? an eye on my own self-fulfillment so that I’m always doing what’s inspiring to me, but also thinking about what this will Yeah, because that would just be distracting. It’s really not mean to people who see it. I know for me, the movies and the point of the movie. This is not a movie of brutal realism; TV shows that I watch, and the songs or the books or the it’s a comedy and it’s a story. It’s sort of a parable, so there articles, are a big part of how I make sense of the world. I would really be no reason to have any nudity. The only nudity feel fortunate to be a part of that cultural conversation. And I that’s in the movie are these clips from real pornography try to be something positive. @DavidAtlantaGA // 17

The way in which media affects romantic relationships is also explored in another film of yours, (500) Days of Summer, in which you embody more of the traditional female archetype. What parallels do you see between that film and Don Jon?

Yeah, there’s definitely a real parallel between (500) Days of Summer and Don Jon in that both male protagonists are quite selfish at the beginning of the story. Both of them in their own ways are very much objectifying the opposite sex. With Jon, his ideas of what women are supposed to be, or what love or sex are supposed to be, are sort of preset, and he’s not paying attention to the actual people in front of him. Then, they’re similar also in that they’re both coming-of-age stories, and by the end you see them both beginning to break out of their old ways and grow up a bit. You seem like the complete opposite of a meathead, so how did you get in the mind and body of Don Jon? Yeah, I worked out a ton. And I ate a ton of chicken! You know, I think we all know guys like that, and we all have some of Jon and some of Barbara (his love interest in Don Jon, played by Scarlett Johansson) within us. I know that I have some of both. They’re both at extreme ends of the spectrum of cultural norms: what a man is supposed to be and what a woman is supposed to be. But I think we all have that tendency in a way. It’s easier to just oversimplify ourselves and our identities and our lives, and especially our loves lives. It’s very seductive to think that it just ought to be simple – and in real life, it’s not. You use the word “faggot” at one point in the film, and even though it feels appropriate to the character, was there ever a discussion or any hesitation to use a word that many in the gay community find offensive? Like you said, that character would say that at that point. It’s at a moment when he’s sort of feeling threatened. His buddy just said that there was a hotter girl at the club than his girl, and so in that moment of insecurity he uses that word. I think that’s usually where that sort of hateful language comes from: out of people’s insecurity. When it comes to directing, what did you learn from Gregg Araki on Mysterious Skin that you fell back on during the filming of Don Jon? I remember working with Gregg and being very struck by the fact that he could watch the movie in his head while we were making it. It allowed him to be very decisive and specific because he knew how the whole movie was gonna cut together already, whereas oftentimes films are made and you just shoot lots of angles and cut it together later. With Don Jon, we took more of the approach that’s closer to what Gregg did. I already had in mind how I wanted the thing to be cut together while we were shooting. Another filmmaker who is like that is Rian Johnson (Looper). Another one is Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises). These are the guys who are thinking that far ahead. Gregg really stood out in that regard. You first really reached a gay audience with Mysterious Skin. How aware are you of having a gay following?

18 // davidatlanta.com

I don’t spend much time distinguishing people into categories like that, so to be honest, I can’t say it’s really something I think about any more than I think about, “Oh, how many black people are watching my movies?” and “How many Catholics are watching my movies?” I don’t really think about it in that way. If you were gay, you might realize how many gay people adore you. Well, that’s very nice to hear! I’m glad to hear it. With Don Jon and your new beefy body, are you prepared for the extra attention you might get from the gay community? [Laughs] I hadn’t thought of it. My body’s not like that anymore. I was working out every day to play that character, but bodybuilding isn’t really my thing. I’ve lost most of the weight. How do you reflect on your kiss with Topher Grace during a 1998 episode of That ’70s Show – the first gay kiss on North American primetime TV? Yeah, proud moment! When you look back on that moment, how far do you think we’ve come since that landmark kiss? I was actually just talking about this with a good friend of mine who’s gay. We were saying there really has been a change. I mean, that was more than 10 years ago that we shot that episode, and a lot has changed. I do think that television and movies have played a big part in it. It’s certainly not solely responsible, but that has been a part of it becoming a more normal and accepted part of our culture – that some people are gay and that’s just how it is, especially for people who are not used to that or close-minded toward that. There’s been a pretty big change, and we’re certainly not all the way open-minded – I mean, there was a civil rights movement in the ’60s and there’s still plenty of racism in the world – but we’ve come a long way. I certainly am proud to have made that small contribution of whatever kind to that progress.

I eat French fries and sometimes I’ll smoke cigarettes. We all do things that we know are bad for us. But I think it’s worth pointing out that stuff like that, it’s not harmless, especially if you consume a lot of that kind of media. I think it does seep into your brain and into your identity and will absolutely interfere in your ability to be happy – and that’s exactly what Don Jon is about. It’s a young man who watches too much pornography and a young woman who watches too many romantic Hollywood movies, and neither one of them can be satisfied in their relationship because they’re too busy comparing real life to these simplistic fantasies that they’ve seen on screen. Real life is so much more beautiful and rich and nuanced than those oversimplified fantasies, but you won’t feel that beauty if you’re too busy comparing it to the 42 reasons why your favorite actor is the perfect man. There’s no such thing as a perfect man. Every human being is a unique person.

BuzzFeed recently named off 42 things that prove you’re the perfect man. Included on that list: the forearms, your chic style, that you look great in women’s underwear. Even the 3rd Rock from the Sun pigtails got a mention.

There’s been talk of you starring in a remake of Guys and Dolls with Channing Tatum. Should we expect to see you in it?

[Laughs] That’s exactly the kind of oversimplified fantasy shit that I’m making fun of in Don Jon.

It’s one possibility. Chan and I really like the idea of doing a musical together, and we’re working on making that happen. We don’t know exactly how it will happen or what it’ll be or how long it’ll take, but we’re determined to do it.

So you don’t like being the “perfect man,” then? I must say that every gay man also likes that idea. To be honest, I understand it’s all in good fun and that’s fine, of course. We all have our media that we consume that we [Laughs] I’ll keep that in mind! can admit is not the most healthy or positive, and sometimes @DavidAtlantaGA // 19

Pucker Up

Drag dining plants a big one on the South with the opening of Lips Atlanta

ith the star-studded drag entertainment our fine city has to offer, it is a wonder Lips Restaurant took so long to plant a big one on the Atlanta skyline. With locations in New York, Ft. Lauderdale and San Diego, our little peach seemed like the next logical step.

Former Gay Pride Grand Marshal and Atlanta legend Bubba D. Licious, will be one of Lips Atlanta’s many big-name entertainers. Bubba said, “Why not Atlanta? Atlanta is the major city in the South, still growing, yet affordable. Atlanta is a major city for tourism, and we hope to be another “must see” for local residents and visitors.” In the completely remodeled location of the former Club Glow, spanning nearly 7,000 square feet, Lips Atlanta is taking the stage with some serious fierceness. According to Bubba D., “Now rather than ‘glow’, it will ‘shimmer and shine’ with glitz and glam, like a drag queen’s jewelry box.” The restaurant will accommodate more than 200 people in one seating, but according to staff, “It will seem like many more as the staff seems to double during your dinner.” The startup and opening process has been lengthy and meticulous. These girls don’t fuck around! Owner, creator, founder, Queen Mother and Grand Dame of Lips USA, Yvonne Lamé, makes sure only the best and the brightest get to kiss the Lips stage. “We auditioned more than 100 drag queens, and selected two dozen that we will present at The Ladies of Lips. We chose a variety of queens, some seasoned like Charlie [Brown] and Bubba, some new and fresh like Evah [Destruction] and Violet [Chachki]. We also have Xena from Nashville, and Justice Counce from Las Vegas.” As far as staffing, Bubba said, “We advertise a local casting call, as well as post on our website, LipsUSA.com, and our social media sites. Please LIKE us on Facebook!” At Lips Atlanta, you’ll always have the best seat in town. Bubba told us Lips Atlanta offers “a fabulous stage giving the entire seated audience unobstructed views from every seat. The lights and sounds system are state of the art club systems with color optics, strobes, spot lights, video/TV monitors and more.”

“The menu varies at each location…for example, Ft. Lauderdale has lemon, Atlanta has sweet and New York has Long Island,” Bubba D. said. “Lips Atlanta’s menu includes a variety of dishes, salads, appetizers with something for everyone…fish, fowl, surf, turf, vegetarian, baked, broiled, blackened, fried, frozen, grilled, sautéed, seared, salads,

Once you get through appetizers and start on dinner, the real fun begins. “Shows are the desert to every dinner served,” said Bubba D. “There are specific reservation seating times and the shows start 30 to 45 minutes after everyone is seated- about the time everyone is finishing their dinner, and ready for dessert.” As far as the crowd goes, everyone is welcome. Bubba said, “We have customers from all walks of life at each of the locations. Of course it may vary somewhat just as the residential demographics may vary.” They hope to appeal to everyone, of course, except what Bubba called, “…the Right/Wrong wing segment of society.” Amen, sister. Lips Atlanta is going to be hot. “We are a tourist attraction in each city, and expect to be in Atlanta as well. So bring out your family or friends when they come to town, or send them to Lips to get them out of your hair!”

LIP SERVICE Don’t ever expect a dull moment from the girls at Lips. Every day except Monday boasts a special weekly event: Give the lip synching a rest and fire up those vocal chords for Retrotastic “Drag Karaoke” every Tuesday. On Wednesdays, dust your lucky daubers for “Bitch Bingo”; Or dress to the nines for “Dinner with the Divas” every Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the restaurant gussies it up for the “Glitz and Glamour Spectaculars”, followed on Sunday by a “Gospel Brunch” with Mother Bubba D. Licious and the Sisters of Sequins. Lips Atlanta is located at 3011 Buford Highway NE, right by the old Chapparal, in what is technically now Brookhaven. “The

newly created city of Brookhaven has been wonderful to us in getting our establishment up and ready to go. Many thanks to the Mayor and everyone for their help and guidance,” Bubba said. Lips is open for reserved dining guests on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7:15 p.m. showtime. Fridays and Saturdays, choose between the Early Show Seating from 6:30–7 p.m. or the Late Show Seating from 9–9:15 p.m. Rise and dine on Sunday mornings with Bubba D. Licious for Sunday Gospel Brunch reservations at 12:30 p.m., showtime at 1:30 p.m. Lips is closed on Mondays so the girls can get some much needed beauty rest – looking that good takes time, work and money, honey! The Grand Opening weekend is Sept. 20, starting at 6:30 p.m. Expect “a weekend of Glitz and Glam, with one seating Friday evening, two seatings Saturday evening, brunch on Sunday and the Joining Hearts Party Sunday night.” But don’t expect to just show up and get in. “The reservation book is filling quickly, so call now if you want to be among the first to see the newest show in town!”

ocial media has become a cultural phenomenon in the last decade that has allowed people from all different walks of life to be able to connect with one another. Whether that connection is an old classmate or a person just wanting to get their rocks off, social media has transformed the way each and every one of us interacts. One local couple is capitalizing on the internet trend to find their own connection. Their target: a baby. Chris and Thomas Ryan-Lawrence met through mutual friends four years ago. After their wedding at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens in May of 2012, the couple knew there was just one more piece to their family missing – a child. The couple said child children have always played a role in their lives seeing as their combined families has a ton of them. Their first attempt at having a child came in the form of Chris’ sister. Their plan was to use Thomas’ sperm and her eggs that way the baby would be genetically shared between the couple “In truth, we always considered adoption,” Chris told David Magazine. “But after the conference, Thomas and I started to look further into other options including international and domestic adoptions. We just wanted to explore all avenues.” The pair looked into different ways and forms of adoption. The discussion of Chris’ sister’s eggs as a surrogate was discussed. The couple had heard many success stories from friends and other couples, but Thomas said something in the air was pulling them in a different direction. “After looking at all options we just felt the universe was telling us [surrogacy] wasn’t the right option for us,” Thomas said. “We looked at all of our options and decided to go with an adoption. It’s more efficient and we’d be pretty much guaranteed a child.” At the conference, Chris and Thomas attended seminars and talked with other LGBT families. The decision was made to go through an agency that specialized in new born adoptions. Thomas had a coworker who had used them before so the couple felt very comfortable in their chosen path. Their choice of an open adoption opened up a world of benefits for them. For starters, the couple set up a profile for potential mothers to be able to get to know the couple better online.

continue to be involved in the child’s life so it’s important that her child is placed with a family she likes.” The profile helps to establish one important issue first: the mother will know her child is going to a gay couple. According to a 2007 report by the Williams Institute, 270,000 children were living in same-sex couples. Out of those children, 65,000 were adopted. Adoption is illegal in 10 states. Other states have laws or constitutional amendments allowing joint adoption and/or stepparent adoptions. Others, including Georgia, have no or ambiguous wording on the books. “The fact that we’re a gay couple was something we never thought would play into consideration,” Chris said. “A person can call us directly and the profile helps the birthmother get to know us directly. If she thinks a same-sex couple is unfit for her child, she’ll pass us over without any involvement.” The profile is a brainchild of both Chris and Thomas. Both work in marketing in one form or another and have been as proactive as two men can be when searching for a child. Their agency is marketing them to potential parents, but the pair isn’t just sitting idly by when leaving their fate in another’s hands. They have their own website, thomasandchris.com, as well as a Facebook fan page (facebook.com/thomasandchrisadopt) with over 700 likes where prospective mothers as well as anyone else can check the couple out. “We’re very proactive with our process,” Thomas said. “We have fliers people can send to their friends and even pens. It’s inevitable that adoption comes up with our waiter when we’re out to eat. We leave the pen with the check in the hopes they’ll be able to pass or search along.” The real reason for an open adoption is the fact that the mother selects the parents and remains involved, unlike a state or foster adoption. Chris said that the adoption process is a journey no matter what. “Gay or straight, there are a lot of ups and downs for adopting couples,” Chris said. “It’s just one huge roller coaster ride. We want the child’s family involved rather than walking into a place, picking up a child and having no idea who or where they came from. If something happens, you can’t call the state or an orphanage and ask if there’s a family history or even for help.” All in all, these two men are remaining optimistic. Right now, it’s just a waiting game. A no could come from either side. “We’re just sitting and waiting,” Thomas said “By the time a family calls they’ve been through tons of profiles. They don’t just pick us, we have to pick them too. For now we’ll just have to wait and see.”

“It’s like the Match.com of adoptions,” Thomas said laughing. “And in truth it really is. The mother will @DavidAtlantaGA // 29

It’s Money, Honey

The Importance of Financial Planning for the LGBT Community

BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN

A

s the LGBT community grows larger due to increased acceptance by society, the number of same-sex individuals and couples considering starting a family that includes children is also growing. Of course, for samesex couples, starting a family typically involves more time and planning than for heterosexual couples. All that time and planning can also involve a lot of money, as can planning for retirement and end-of-life care. With that in mind, I spoke recently with Bill Denton, Vice President and Senior Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch, about the importance of financial planning for members of the LGBT community. Can you tell me what your job entails, specifically in regards to the LGBT community? Absolutely. We do wealth management for domestic partners, as well as retirement and estate planning; we try to figure out who they are and what their priorities are, what’s important to them, and match those goals up to their investments. 32 // davidatlanta.com

What would your financial planning recommendations be for LGBT couples who are looking to have children, whether it be through surrogacy or adoption? Obviously, it’s an expensive process either way. Well, I think the main thing is to sit down and talk with the couple about what their wishes are with their children. So, whether it’s foster parenting or surrogacy or adoption – working closely together with their attorney and CPA. Of course the state adoption laws are different, so it takes everybody working together as a team with their attorney and their CPA to talk about their tax advantages like with adoption credits, thing like that. So, it can get complicated, but I think the main thing is just talking with the couple about what they want to do, and address the issues about having children. A lot of couples considering having children may not be aware of the costs involved. Based on your experience, what is the price range that a couple could be looking at for these processes?

Well… I really don’t know the pricing. Adoption, surrogacy, and foster parenting are all very different. I think it just really depends what the couple is trying to do; their parenting desires, their guardianship regarding months… so I don’t really know the cost involved; it would depend on the road the couple wanted to go down. Depending on what state an LGBT couple resided in, certain laws may be encountered that potentially make the process easier or more difficult regarding family planning. Based on your experience, what is entailed in the creation of estates or wills, that sort of thing? Well, I think the main thing is that you want to protect your assets. So with the state planning for domestic partners, you want to make sure that you have a will (of course) that specifies how you want your assets to be distributed after death: who should serve as your personal representative, whether it’s an executor or trustee, to settle the estate and distribute it accordingly. So, there are different types of legal documents that can help you do this, from wills and living trusts, living wills, power of attorney… so mainly, it’s a lot of legal documentation to make sure your desires are met. There’s also, of course, where you want to minimize the taxable value of your estate, so you want to make sure that you lessen some of the impact that a state tax has, and you can do this by using a variety of trust-related and wealth transfer strategies that would reduce the size of your taxable estate.

sion will change. Like estate taxes, that is one where you can leave roughly five million dollars to your spouse, so that is a huge thing with estate taxes. Also, social security benefits – when one spouse dies, the survivor has the option of either claiming his or her own social security benefits, as well as the spouses’, whichever is higher. Those are two huge things that affect same-sex couples. For LGBT individuals who don’t have children, or even for those who do, what can be done to prepare for retirement and living after retirement, in those years where they may not be working. We do a lot of retirement planning for domestic partners, so you get special privileges when it comes to rolling over at a higher rate from a 401K; the spouse is named beneficiary. So this is a privilege that’s limited to spouses, which will now allow retirement savings rollovers go to same-sex couples, which is terrific. We also look at the spouses’ taxes and whether it’s advantageous to file taxes jointly, or to do them individually; at least in some states, married couples will have the option of filing jointly, which could help them taxwise. We do a lot of retirement planning, really with all of our clients, just talking about how to secure a retirement that they want and sort of envisioning: “What is your dream?” “What is it that you’re trying to accomplish?” “When do you want to retire?” We help them determine how much is enough to retire. We do a lot of retirement planning with our clients. Is there any other advice that you would give to LGBT couples?

The recent Supreme Court decision in United States v. Windsor was a major victory recently for same-sex couples in terms of financial benefits, but the ruling there doesn’t necessarily affect how every couple needs to plan at this point. Depending on what state someone lives in, is there a difference in how much work needs to be done in order to insure end-of-life planning and estate planning is met?

I guess the main thing is that we’ve taken a huge step in the right direction, and that, because it is a little confusing; some states recognize same-sex marriage, and some states don’t. I think it’s important to work with a professional, whether it’s a financial advisor or CPA or an attorney to make sure that you are taking advantage of the new benefits that are available. Full federal benefits are now available, like survivor benefits, military benefits, when you have a spouse that’s outside the U.S. These are some great benefits that are available to us, and we need Well, absolutely, DOMA is a huge step in the right direction. to make sure that you’re going down the right path Unfortunately, it still does matter in which state you live in, with a professional. especially as a married couple. So if you are a same-sex couple in a state that does recognize the marriage, clearly, you’ve got some really good benefits that this recent court deci-

Competition is fiercer than ever for DJs today. Seems anyone with an iPhone thinks he can mix a beat. It wasn’t always like that. When Out Magazine named Joe Gauthreaux “Hottest DJ of the Year” in 2005, it was a very different world in music. Back then, Gauthreaux’s sound was primarily vocal house mixed with tribal and melodic trance. Today, in order to stay ahead of the pack, he’s had to switch things up a bit. He doesn’t mind. “The worst thing a DJ can do is get stuck in a certain sound for too long,” he says. “If you don’t change with the sound, you’ll get left behind.” That’s why some nights, Gauthreaux will spin a full on banging tribal set. Other nights, he plays anthems and electronic tracks. ”I’m always trying to incorporate new beats and sounds into my set to keep the momentum going on my dance floor.” Because that’s the other thing. Crowds are forever changing. There are always new people to win over. “Whatever the event, I want people to think the experience was worth the cover charge and the long line they waited on to get in.” At the end of the night, the main job of any great DJ is to make sure clubbers have fun. That’s what Joe Gauthreaux will be working toward when he spins Heretic on Saturday, Sept. 21. How did you go from club DJ to remixing for the likes of Justin Bieber? After DJing for about ten years, I knew I really wanted to take things up a notch. I’ve always wanted to produce my own stuff but was so busy touring that I never took the time. I finally decided to make the time. How do you remix a track?

CLOSE-UP ON

DJ Joe Gauthreaux BY MARK SANFORD

36 // davidatlanta.com

I start with an acapella and build the track layer by layer. A remixer is basically reproducing the song, using different beats, chords, sounds, drums, keys… all that stuff. It’s a very long process to go from someone’s raw vocal to a full mix. Did the final product of your “Boyfriend” remix surprise you? I was really happy with that mix and so proud with how it turned out. Of course, listening to it now, I would do it so differently. I like to think I’m always growing as a producer. Do your remixes have a signature sound? Not exactly. I try to make them all sound different. I let the track guide me. Who has been your biggest inspiration?

DJ Peter Rauhofer. He’s my inspiration for remixing. The way he made each mix sound so different, yet you could always tell a Peter Rauhofer mix. Favorite diva? Madonna. We have the same birthday! What’s your number one song of all time? “Where Love Lives” by Alison Limerick. It’s a classic piano house track from the nineties. It still holds up to this day. What TV show are you most looking forward to this fall? Scandal on ABC. It’s my guilty pleasure show. Favorite spot in Atlanta? My friends’ houses. I have so many friends in Atlanta. It’s nice to visit their homes and not feel like a stranger. What’s one thing you wish you knew how to do? I wish I would have taken piano lessons as a kid. It’s hard to learn as an adult. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wish I could manage my time better. I think I do ok, but I feel like I’m in a constant struggle to get everything done. Favorite designer? I don’t really follow fashion. The only reason I look halfway decent when I leave the house is my roommate loves fashion and helps me out. What astrological sign do you best get along with? I get along with other Leos, but romantically, I think Libras are awesome. They’re best equipped to put up with my dramatic mood swings. What’s in your fridge right now? My fridge is always pretty well stocked with Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. I’m definitely an eat-at-home kind of guy. Fun fact about you: I’m a huge Apple tech head. All my friends call me when they need help with their iPhones or computers. I know them pretty much inside and out. opardi z z A is r h C By ARIANA GRANDE, Yours Truly

JANELLE MONÁE, The Electric Lady

Hold up, people. Ariana Grande, even with all the belts and coos and high notes, is not the new Mariah Carey. As good as the onetime child actress can be – and she has many earth-shattering, stratospherical vocal triumphs on her debut – she’s her own singer, and she’s not yet reached Careyat-the-height-of-her-career caliber. Not that she doesn’t come close on Yours Truly (just listen to the last bit of “Baby I,” where she goes for M.C.’s signature whistle note), especially when she breaks from the trends to deliver – with the help of ’90sdiva guru Babyface – a throwback to a classier, twerk-less time in music. “Tattooed Heart” swoops with the doo-wop sound of the early ’60s; it’s a lovely listen as its finger snaps and piano line reach a steady rhythm, so it’s easy to overlook the silly title and the track’s altogether nauseating mawkishness. The better ballad, “Almost is Never Enough” with The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes, goes subtler and turns in a sophisticated, handsomely produced sound that’s a definite highlight. What’s surprising – and pleasantly so – is that those are the only outright slow tempos. “Piano” is a buoyant delight that dances on air, “Right There” falls back to ’90s hip-hop and then, for the last song, the unnecessary “Better Left Unsaid,” it’s to the club with a slow-building bounce. Yours Truly, an exciting, very respectable debut that almost gets everything right, will give Ariana the platform and cred to make her next release the pop knockout this one so desperately wants to be.

Janelle Monáe is a consummate singer, rapper, performer, dancer, suit-wearer and … actress? She is if you’ve been following her idiosyncratic mythology of an alter-ego android named Cindi Mayweather, who’s basically a badass standing for the liberation of the “others,” much like Monáe herself. The third chapter in this ambitious sci-fi saga is a prequel to her other two outings, 2010’s The ArchAndroid and its predecessor, the Metropolis EP. This time, though, themes previously addressed – individuality, equality, self-empowerment and freedom from oppression – rise to the surface in Monáe’s musical vision to unify through song. It’s also the gayest of the three, with an interlude insisting that “robot love is queer,” an allusion to lesbian “undercover love” on “Givin Em What They Love” with Prince, and a crush on a girl in tights during the funky drag-anthem “Q.U.E.E.N.,” a morphing swag song featuring Erykah Badu and a fierce rap outro. Though far less psychedelic than on ArchAndroid, Monáe doesn’t forsake art for commercial appeal even as she vends her Afro-futuristic queerness – and opens up her sound – to the world. Slicking up the sonic palette with shades of straight-up R&B power-ballad adornment (“Primetime”), “oooh-oooh” girl-group melodies (“Electric Lady”) and retro-inspired synths (“What an Experience”), there’s still an air of cool hovering atop Monáe’s pompadour that tells you – with a thrilling, multifaceted and intellectual approach to performance – this android is the real deal.

KT TUNSTALL, Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon

“Don’t Let the Bastards Get You Down” is their advice, and over just a subtle bass rumble and guitar strums Bergquist sings with quiet intensity (and Aimee Mann on backup), “Are they gonna steal my love? Are you gonna free my love?” like she’s encouraging us to keep fighting for marriage equality. Detweiler takes the lead on the second disc’s elegant piano-painted “All Over Ohio,” a charming love letter to their home state. With overarching tropes of uncertainty and mortality, these lazy Sundaysounding songs end with a celebration of life: “Favorite Time of Light” cherishes fleeting moments of simplicity. There’s nothing simple about these songs, though; there is, however, something beautiful and poignant and near perfect about each one.

The fuzzy feelings of KT Tunstall’s optimistic radio-baiter “Suddenly I See,” a song hooked to your noggin because of your Devil Wears Prada DVD, is nowhere to be found on Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon. The Scottish songstress throws out the cute pop-girl façade and throws on a cowboy hat (literally; check out her being all Paula Cole on the cover), getting deeper into the folk zone she’s dabbled with in the past. She abandons the mainstream angling of previous work – the closest she comes here is Grade: Aon the rustically arranged single “Feel It All” – but sounds right at home with a guitar and her always mulled-over thoughts on heartache, heartache and more heartache. “Made of Glass” is a breakup lament that uses the title as a metaphor for the universal pain of a terminal relationship, and “Invisible Empire” is an eloquently composed rumination on rebirth. “Yellow Flower” is similarly graceful with its fairy-tale-like wistfulness; it’s the most moving song among the 13. Like the bulk of Tunstall’s surprising step back from the spotlight, these pieces are a part of the bigger picture: The album is a catharsis for dealing with the end of a marriage and the death of her father. And even if it doesn’t take to you instantly, and it’s sometimes languid, Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon is still an audacious, emotionally reaching work. Certainly, it’s her most admirable.

OVER THE RHINE, Meet Me at the Edge of the World The first time folkies Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist released a double album, in 2003 with their stunning masterstroke Ohio, the always wonderful husband/wife duo displayed as much talent as they did ambition. They’re at it again with Meet Me at the Edge of the World, a sprawling set of incredibly moving, gorgeously shaped reflections on life, loss, love and land. They imagine an idyllic universe on the title track, a fitting start that sets the tone for an earthy concept album bent on cherishing the time we have now and looking ahead to the hereafter. In the meantime,

JOHN MAYER, Paradise Valley Dressing the songs similarly to his cowboy-in-the-field look on the disc’s pastoral cover, John Mayer’s rustic Americana transition takes full flight on the follow-up to 2012’s also-country-inspired Born and Raised. But the wonderfully sincere Paradise Valley, with guests Katy Perry (“Who You Love,” an old-soul song where Perry sounds refreshingly raw) and Frank Ocean (who stuns on the “Wildfire” interlude) is a more laid-back, well-rounded and approachable set that reestablishes John Mayer as a top-tier music maker. @DavidAtlantaGA // 45

GOLDFRAPP, Tales of Us You could say the English duo’s last album, heavy on the Xanadu-inspired ’80s pop, was just a phase. On their daringly different Tales of Us, Will Gregory and Alison Goldfrapp reel it way, way in and go neo-folk with a musically mysterious and lyrically rich work that finds the pair creating sonic portraits of an androgynous boy secretly yearning to be a girl (the wondrous “Annabel”) and a Hollywood actress married to a serial killer (“Laurel”). The beats won’t stick in your head this time, but the stories – and the seductive vocals bringing them to life – will. JULIANNA BARWICK, Nepenthe If heaven were a sound, it would be this: musical experimentalist Julianna Barwick’s latest. Nepenthe, the Louisiana-born artist’s fourth release, floats about the ethers with only wordless murmurs and ethereal choral compositions that are akin to Sigur Rós at their most angelic (makes sense: the band’s producer, Alex Somers, had a hand in this, too). They mourn and cry and grieve, but always with a healing sensibility, which is especially evoked in the meditative state of “Labyrinthine.” This right here is divine intervention. RUDIMENTAL, Home British electro-pop quartet Rudimental assembles a groovy set of galvanizing songs for their mostly hit, hardly miss debut. Tracks featuring London music-maker MNEK – “Spoons” and its sexy slow burn, and the intoxicating house track “Baby” – rival the rest, standing out among some of the more standard EDM. “Feel the Love,” with a John Newman vocal, is a Graffiti6like rush of bass, organ and horns. And it’s never a bad thing when Emeli Sandé shows up; the soul powerhouse is a welcome addition on both “More than Anything” and the chill closer “Free.”

AUTUMN IN BOSTON AND CAMBRIDGE BY ANDRE W COLLINS

S

ummer may signal the end of high season at New England’s beach resorts, but September and October are the perfect months for visiting the region’s largest metropolis, Boston, along with its smaller neighbors, Cambridge and Somerville. At this time, the city comes alive as students return to the area’s many colleges, the leaves turn bold shades of orange and crimson in gardens and parks around town, and restaurants and bars with terraces and sidewalk seating entertain fans of alfresco dining for a few more weeks of warm weather. Here’s a look at one of the nation’s gay-friendliest destinations, with a particular eye toward what to see during the fall months. But you’ll find tips here on things to do, cool inns and hotels, and hip dining and nightlife that should come in handy no matter what time of year you visit. The South End This handsome neighborhood of narrow, tree-shaded streets lined with Victorian bow-front, redbrick townhouses has steadily evolved over the years into one of the city’s favorite destinations for an afternoon stroll, whether to admire the architecture, duck into tony boutiques, or seek out trendy neighborhood bistros and cafes. This upscale

52 // davidatlanta.com

district is very much the heart of Boston’s gay scene, and it’s home to several long-running LGBT nightspots - the endearingly dive-y Boston Eagle, the classic dance club and video bar Club Café (clubcafe.com), the friendly sports bar Fritz (fritzboston.com). A favorite pastime around here is dining out, with most of the top restaurants along the main thoroughfares of Tremont Street, Washington Street, and Columbus Avenue. Longtime favorites of the gay community, like Franklin Café (franklincafe.com) and Tremont 647 (tremont647.com), are as popular as ever both for dining and drinking. But in recent years, quite a few other culinary stars have helped shine a light on the neighborhood, including Coppa (coppaboston.com), where you’ll find superb charcuterie and cheese plates, wood-fired pizza, and wines by the glass, and newcomer Estelle’s (estellesboston.com), which earns raves for its updated take on Southern cuisine, from crispy catfish burgers to buttermilk fried chicken. Jamaica Plain Slightly out of the way Jamaica Plain, or JP as it’s affectionately known, is a few miles southwest of downtown

Boston, in a relatively residential part of Boston that tourists sometimes miss. Especially if you’re visiting during the fall foliage season, this funky, progressive neighborhood with a solid gay and - particularly - lesbian following merits a visit.

Club Cafe

Boston’s famed Emerald Necklace - a string of dozen green spaces laid out by eminent 19th-century landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted - has several significant sections in Jamaica Plain, including Franklin Park (with its historic zoo), Arnold Arboretum (with 280 acres of plants and trees connected by well-marked paths), Jamaicaway (a tree-lined parkway), and Jamaica Pond. You can continue along the Emerald Necklace visiting the other linked parks, including Olmsted Park in Brookline, the Riverway, the Back Bay Fens (where you can access the outstanding Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts), Commonwealth Avenue Mall, and finally the Public Garden and Boston Common. The entire string of parks is about 10 miles (and popular as a biking route), but it’s easy just to choose a few portions of it and explore those on foot. All of the Jamaica Plain parks, for example, are great for strolling and jogging. Cambridge and Somerville These two neighboring cities just across the Charles River from Boston are sometimes considered mere extensions of their larger neighbor, but each has a great deal going for it and sizable LGBT populations. Cambridge (cambridgeusa. org), with about 106,000 residents, is most famous has the home of Harvard University and MIT, and indeed these world-renowned educational institutions are worth visiting, especially the many esteemed attractions related to the arts and sciences - the Harvard Art Museums, Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Museum of Science, MIT Museum. On a sunny September day, it’s a pleasure simply to walk through verdant Harvard Square, or on a path fringing the Charles River.

Emerald Necklace

You’ll also find quite a few performance spaces, from comedy improv to alternative music to modern dance. Check out the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.), where on Saturday nights Club Oberon (cluboberon.com) stages the queer-fabulous Donkey Show, a wildly entertaining disco extravaganza complete with hot go-go dancers. Actual gay bars have come and gone in Cambridge over the years, but one has persevered: The cruise-y Paradise (paradisecambridge.com) is a two-level club with porn showing on the TV screens in the main bar, and hot dancers in G-strings slinking about on the lower floor.

Donkey Show at Club Oberon

Cambridge has some particularly dynamic neighborhoods for exploring, among them diverse Central Square, with its live music venues and affordable ethnic eateries, and student-driven Porter Square, where - particularly along Massachusetts Avenue - the laudable dining options are many. Harvard Square is the hub of the eating action, but all throughout Cambridge, you can find plenty of inviting places to knock back local microbrews and feast on excellent food. @DavidAtlantaGA // 53

Among the favorite ethnic restaurants in Cambridge, and there are many, keep an eye out for the Maharaja (maharajaboston.com) for well-prepared Indian cuisine in an elegantly decorated dining room, Thelonious Monkfish (theloniousmonkfish.com) over in Central Square for sushi and mod Asian-Japanese fare, and Koreana (koreanaboston.com) for Korean fare. Cambridge is also at the forefront of locavoreminded, seasonal cuisine, with some true destination dining notables. T.W. Food (twfoodrestaurant.com) has helped to lead this charge with its farm-to-table menu - the Sunday jazz brunch is a lot of fun. Another gem, near MIT, is Salts Restaurant (saltsrestaurant.com), which turns out wellcrafted French-inflected contemporary food, from bergamotcured ocean trout to whole roasted boneless duck for two. Somerville, with a population of about 77,000 and a location just north of Cambridge, is primarily residential, but it’s home to several cool dining and nightlife options, especially around bustling Davis Square, where you’ll find the inviting Spoke Wine Bar (facebook.com/SpokeWineBar), which serves commendable food and vino well into the evening, and hipster-favored Diesel Café (diesel-cafe.com), a worthy source of sandwiches, salads breakfast fare, and craft coffee, with an emphasis on local provisions. Bergamot (bergamotrestaurant.com), a short walk from Cambridge, is one of the hottest tables in Somerville, thanks to the super globally inspired modern American fare, the nightly $39 three-course dinner special, and top-notch cocktails (plus great beer and wine lists). Where to Stay in Boston and Cambridge One of the most fascinating hotel adaptations in the country, the GLBT-popular Liberty Hotel (libertyhotel.com) is built around what had been the Charles Street Jail, an imposing granite building that dates to 1851. Since its masterful architectural conversion in 2007, this luxe 298-room property by the Charles River has become a desirable overnight destination, its rooms with huge windows overlooking the river, and its bars and restaurants drawing a see-and-be-seen crowd, especially Clink, where you can dine amid the grillwork of the former jail cells. The South End’s gay-owned Encore B&B (encorebandb. com) is a romantic but reasonably priced option; the redbrick townhouse on a tree-lined street has four stylishly appointed rooms with private baths, flat-screen TVs, and plush bedding. With rates starting at under $100 for a room with shared bath (rooms with private baths don’t cost too much more), the neighboring Adams B&B (adamsboston. com) and Oasis Guest House (oasisgh.com) are couple of the top bargains in the city. These gay-owned properties enjoy a great location by Fenway and the Back Bay, and have compact, simply furnished rooms, plus outdoor and indoor common areas; if you just need a clean and safe place base for exploring, these are a good bet. Gay-favored (and pet-welcoming) boutique-hotel brand Kimpton has a couple of dapper properties in downtown Boston: Nine Zero (ninezero.com) is situated by the Boston 54 // davidatlanta.com

Common and has 190 super-swanky rooms, including several urbane suites with distinct themes (note the carved deer heads in the Lodge Nouveau Suite). Kimpton’s Onyx (onyxhotel.com) is close to Faneuil Hall and the North End and has 112 boldly decorated rooms, each with iHome entertainment systems. In Cambridge, consider Kimpton’s dapper Hotel Marlowe, whose 236 handsomely furnished rooms have animal-print carpets and opulent velvet fabrics - the spacious suites are especially memorable, with their floor-to-ceiling windows and telescopes, perfect for ogling the Boston skyline just across the river. Guests can take out complimentary kayaks for a paddle on the Charles, and the restaurant, Bambara, serves delicious Italian-accented modern New England fare. A convenient Harvard Square location accounts in part for the tremendous popularity the Charles Hotel (charleshotel. com), a light-filled 295-room hotel that’s home to the acclaimed restaurants Henrietta’s Table (for regional American) and Rialto (modern Italian), two popular bars, and a terrific urban spa, Corbu. The hotel lends guests complimentary bicycles to pedal along the nearby Charles riverfront. The nearby Hotel Veritas (thehotelveritas.com) has just plush but intimate rooms, with commissioned artwork by local talents, Turkish bath linens, iPod docks, and plenty of other perks - this is a lovely place to stay if you’re seeking a more laidback, boutique hotel with exceptional one-on-one service. This Week in Theatres Battle of the Year: With the Step Up franchise running on fumes, financially speaking at least, one has to wonder why someone would greenlight another dance-driven film – especially one with Public Enemy #1 Chris Brown as a star. Prisoners: Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman have both been the center of intense speculation about their sexual orientation for years. Both actors have their gay fans. Now you can see both actors – along with a slew of Oscar-nominated actors like Viola Davis and Melissa Leo – in this disturbing dramatic film. Just don’t go in anticipating a Brokeback scene between Jake and Hugh. Thanks for Sharing: Speaking of people loved by the LGBT community, Alecia Moore – a.k.a. P!nk – is one of the stars of indie film Thanks for Sharing. Also starring Mark Ruffalo and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others, this film follows three different men and their struggles with addiction. The Wizard of Oz: Gay icon Judy Garland’s most famous film celebrates its 75th anniversary this year with a special one-week only screening in IMAX 3D.

here’s a new bitch in town. But not just any bitch… your soon-to-be Favorite Bitch! I’m so excited to bring this weekly advice column to David Atlanta and to all of you fierce & fabulous readers! Have you ever needed some good ol’ fashioned advice with the trifling people in your life? You know, the kind of advice that your evil auntie or drunken (but wise) grandma would give you. When you can’t bring yourself to tell them all about it – babies, you have Miss Tiger! What makes me an authority on such matters? Well, years ago, I used to run a cabaret in an infamous suck n’ fuck AKA adult theater in Chicago. I never took advantage of the “employee discount,” however, I did take on the unofficial role of madame, oops, I mean…den mother to all walks of life that wandered in to that dump. In this role, I was sought out by the patrons and employees, all of whom were definitely people with problems. I often found myself giving advice to the business men on the down-low, who came in for afternoon quickies. They were smart as hell when it came to financial matters, but dumb as fuck when it came to tricking. Then there were the strippers, escorts and porn stars. Jesus Christ, I should’ve charged those mother fuckahs for all the advice I gave, and for all the shit they stole along the way!

The SOON-TO-BE-EVICTED ‘cause you’re livin’ large instead of payin’ the rent • the twink and the perverted old troll that’s paying him in cash & prizes • the closet case gagging on dick during his lunch hour • the LESBIAN who can’t resist a bar fight • the drunk downing a shot of rubbing alcohol • the alimony collector and daddy owing back child support • the GANGSTA DRAG QUEEN with a criminal record • the baby makin’ wreck who blames allergic reactions to rubbers, as to why she’s pregnant for the fifth fuckin’ time • the FASHIONISTA • the motha fuckah plagued by chronic electricity disconnection notices • the glamazon • the deep throater and double penetrator • the cheap ass suburbanite buying fake-ass Louis Vuitton • the TRANSEXUAL & BISEXUAL • the recording artist with no signing ability nor contract • the breakdancer performing on public transportation • the aging housewife turned PLASTIC SURGERY MISHAP turned transvestite look-alike • the moonlighting hooker • the bad girl and thug 4 life • the CATWALKER & vogue walker • the sexual deviant and chronic masturbator • the rich & shamelessly famous • the broke & unknown • the STRAIGHT PERSON who finds this column by mistake and loves it • the millimeter peter and dude wearing a Magnum because it really fits • the PILL POPPIN MESS • the conspiracy-theory-misfit who is convinced she was abducted, probed and impregnated by extra terrestrials and last but not least, someone FABULOUS like you!

Then there were the wives. I can’t tell you how many of them sashayed in, only to get their faces cracked after they found out what kind of a place was behind the charges on their husband’s credit card. I helped them too. Hell, I even helped ‘em find new dick and a good divorce attorney. Ah, then there were the celebrities who were in town for more than movie productions. While we slurp on slushies, sitting in the front row watching their movies…these bastards were sitting in the front row of that adult theater slurpin’ on the biggest dick they could find! You know what they say about “Silence is Golden”? Well, so are my diamond rings that the silence paid for. Whether you’re fabulous or a hot mess, or maybe you just need a good laugh – I’m here to help you with both! Write me and get the goddamn answers you’ve been searching for! I help all kinds of people… 68 // davidatlanta.com

You’re more than acquainted with another guy’s penis. Calling yourself straight is not an option for you.

So there are pretty much two types of people in the world, those who can twerk and those you can’t. Bye.

“Big Brother” is an ironic tragedy where terrible people are voted back into society.

You can’t be talking to me with that breath. It stinks! Oh my god, people – oral hygiene. 76 // davidatlanta.com

Judging by his new boyfriend, his standards left when I did.

You’ve been dating your boyfriend for less than three months. Stop calling him your husband – you sound like two little boys playing make-believe.

If you’re in town visiting, stop saying you’ll call me after we’ve just hooked up. It just seems unnecessary at this point.

“I want to inspire people” is another way of saying “I hope people tolerate my loud narcissism.” Vanna White’s son Nikko says he “might be gay.” Guess who can confirm your sexual identity, “Nikko”? Th_s b_tch. Sweetie, the ex was dumped and took the first offer to replace me. They aren’t looking at the “scene” I’m supposedly causing. They’re looking at him hanging with his new grandpa while he still stares at and drools over me. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
