Pop Attack

When I write for this section each week, I tend to stick with at least somewhat serious topics. Not this week. I’ve been too overwhelmed by the proverbial avalanche of pop music that’s been coming out over the last few weeks. I’ll admit, when it comes to music, my tastes run almost squarely to Top 40 pop divas. For the last few weeks, that’s meant nearly nonstop playing of Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz and Katy Perry’s Prism, among others. In December, that list will likely include Britney Spears’ Britney Jean (side note: whenever I see that album title, an altered version of “Billie Jean” plays in my head). And let’s not forget my most-anticipated album of the year: Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP. If you haven’t heard her new single, “Do What U Want,” yet – change that immediately. And while I know that, at least when this issue hits stands, Halloween won’t have happened yet, it’s not too early for at least one Christmas album. The new Kelly Clarkson album, Wrapped In Red, is not just great – it’s got at least one song that should be a new staple on Christmas playlists yearly with “Underneath the Tree.” As we enter into the holiday season, I know what will be keeping me up: all this new pop music. You’ll hear no complaints from me.

The Legendary Princess Charles!

I

just finished doing the Starlight Cabaret show in Piedmont Park and was wore out! But of course, the celebration was not over yet. I had a show to do at 10th & Piedmont immediately afterwards…and I decided to do one of my classic acts. It’s a duet that I do with the worldfamous Princess Charles. Um, after we were done and after the thunderous applause, his ass just kept dancing… and would not stop! It’s like he was doing some kind of ritual pride celebration dance. Then I realized he gets it: life is short, be you as much as you can and celebrate you as much as you can while you can! (And it’s also time that we had a “talk.”) Girl, “sat” down for a second. Wait…do you need a drink of water? Look, I heard you’re hosting two new shows soon. The first one started Oct. 23 at Jungle called Dragnificent with your good girlfriend Phoenix, which will be every Wednesday. But tell us about the new one at 10th & Piedmont.

I’ve always dreamed of hosting my own show since my early twenties. Years later, around 2003-ish, that opportunity came while working at Blake’s as a “bareback” (no comment). Back then, Bart Clennon was the manager and Michael Bennidetii was the marketing director. Well child, one day there was a hosting spot available and they believed in me enough to give me a shot. I’ve been hosting ever since and I love it and have fun making folks laugh er’ now and then. That sounds dragnificent! Okay, so what advice do you have for up and coming emcees in this town? Always pay attention to what’s going on in the world around you. Just get up there and talk real talk because people are funny and everyone wants to laugh! Pop! Damn! He popped again!

Sure, Mr. World-Famous Brent Star. The new show, called “Pop Star,” starts Nov. 1. It’s my first monthly talent show. Basically we are looking for talent in Atlanta – including drag performers, singers, dancers, magicians, cheerleading teams, lions, tigers, bears, oh my! Girl! Stop playing; you know I only have one page. Now what’s the prize? Give us the rest of the tea! Oh, did I mention the show is on the first Friday of every month? I will have three celebrity (or local celebrity) judges. Each contestant who wins that month gets a $100 and those winners will have plenty of time to perfect their craft before they come back to compete in the finals 6 months later for $1000! Pop! It’s like America’s Got Talent… but with a pop! Oooh girl, if you pop that gum one more time! You have hosted several shows over the years; tell us how you got your start. 12 // davidatlanta.com

creep

of the week: Star Parker

“[Progressives] say that if you Christians would just get with the program. Rap a little, smoke a little pot, take off your clothes in front of total strangers a little, give up your guns, give up your God and your disapproval of gays and of course if you would just put some really liberal Republican candidates up for statewide and national seats then maybe, just maybe the national comedians will stop mocking you and the national news will just ignore you instead of try to destroy you,” she says. “Oh the lies of the left.” First of all, ha ha ha ha. Second of all, ha. Sorry, I can’t stop picturing some faceless “progressive” urging good conservatives to “smoke a little pot” and get nekkid. And then, of course, he’d goad them into using food stamps at 7-11 for some Doritos and ice cream. She does make a good point, however, about running more liberal (read: less right-wing) Republicans instead of the insufferable Tea Party idiots who currently have our government held hostage. I mean, there is something to be said for that very legitimate criticism on the part of “the left.” Not that Parker sees it that way. Alas. “[Progressives] declared a war on marriage which weakened women and opened a door to this new culture of meaninglessness,” Parker says. “Homosexuality is now dividing us and bringing hostility into the public square.”

T

By D’Anne Witkowski

he Values Voter Summit that took place Oct. 11-13 was an all-you-can-derp buffet of right-wing lunacy. Needless to say, many VVS speakers chose “the homosexual menace” as one of the focal points of their mouth breathing. One such speaker was Star Parker, founder of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, who railed against homosexuality in addition to blaming the government for making black people poor. I do believe she used the term “slaves” in relation to government “dependency.” You see, Parker is black and she was on welfare for seven years at some point and then she went to college and now welfare is evil and no one should have it. The end. There were many things about her speech that belied a connection with reality, beginning before she even opened her mouth. She walked to the podium to “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” by Kelly Clarkson. Which made me wonder if speakers were allowed to choose their own intro music and if Parks thought that Clarkson was singing about breaking free from government shackles. Then again, Clarkson did once Tweet her love for Ron Paul, so who knows? Parker spent most of her speech calling progressives liars.

14 // davidatlanta.com

Yeah! This African-American woman is right. I simply cannot think of anything that has come before this whole homosexuality business that has divided Americans. If only I could think of something or maybe even two things in our nation’s history while this person with dark skin and a vagina is speaking. Hmm… Nope. I’ve got nothing. Parker is right. Everybody was nice and equal and un-hostile before these gays started causing trouble. Parker continues, “All sexual behavior’s adult behavior in my opinion, so keep it private!” This gets whoops and cheers from the audience. Because if only gays would stop being so public about their gayness then nice conservative folks could just keep oppressing them without so much meddlesome opposition. Then, after complaining about how government dependency has ruined black people, Parker goes in for the kill: “It is nowhere in our nation’s Declaration of Independence or Constitution that a politician has a right to force free people to pay for the lifestyles and indulgences of other free people. Not their housing, not their healthcare, not their food, not their childcare, not their retirement, not their habits, and certainly not their sex life.” And the predominantly white crowd goes insane. Finally, a black person saying what they’ve felt all along about black people (with a jab at homos thrown in for good measure) and it feels great. Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty the white conservatives at the Value Voters Summit are free, at last from having to pretend they give a shit.

Your Guide to Atlanta’s 2013 Elections BY ELIJAH SARKESIAN

G

eorgia may reside in the least gay-friendly part of the country, but in Atlanta, we have an increasing number of gay and gay-friendly politicians who are involved in our city’s government. As Atlanta enters another election on Nov. 5, here are some of the candidates and races that the LGBT community will be watching. Mayoral Race Mayor Kasim Reed, whose support of same-sex marriage came last December after the Atlanta City Council passed a resolution supporting same-sex marriage, is running to stay in the office he was first elected to in 2009. His opponents for the seat include Al Bartell, Fraser Duke and Glenn Wrightson. Unlike his 2009 race, though, where he narrowly beat Mary Norwood in a runoff election, Reed’s chances of winning on election night are high. City Council, Post 2 At-Large Of the three citywide posts on the City Council, Post 2 is one worth keeping an eye on. Mary Norwood, who was

Mayor Kasim Reed

elected to the seat in 2001 and held it until she decided to run for mayor back in 2009, faces off against her successor, Aaron Watson. Norwood is no stranger to Atlanta’s LGBT community. During her 2009 campaign for mayor, she announced her support for same-sex marriage, and enjoyed a wide showing of support from the LGBT community during that race. Watson, meanwhile, has also shown support for the LGBT community. He voted in favor of the Atlanta City Council’s resolution supporting same-sex marriage. Endorsements from LGBT organizations in this race have split between the two candidates. Georgia Equality declined to endorse either candidate outright, though they deemed both equally favorable to the community. The Stonewall Democrats have endorsed Watson, while the Log Cabin Republicans have endorsed Norwood. City Council, District 5 If you want to know where the biggest competition is for gay and gay-friendly candidates this year, look no further than District 5 – an eclectic district that includes East Atlanta, Cabbagetown, Glenwood Park, Edgewood, Reynoldstown, and East Lake. In this area, openly gay candidates Matt Rinker and Christian Enterkin are both looking to unseat incumbent Natalyn Archibong, who’s been in office since 2001. Also running against Archibong is resident John Paul Michalik.

Mary Norwood

Rinker became the first challenger for Archibong back in January. Rinker, a property manager who lives in East Atlanta, has focused on public safety, crime reduction and transportation as major issues of his campaign. Rinker has also acknowledged his support of returning bar closing hours to 4 a.m. Enterkin entered the increasingly crowded race back in May. She brings with her a background in business as a vice president at Landmark Dividends and involvement

as the public safety chair of the Kirkwood Civic Association. Her top priority? Crime prevention. She’s also focused on financial accountability and efficiency in city services. Up until last week, the race also included another gay man, Jon Jones. Jones was seeking to be the first black gay man elected to the Atlanta City Council. When withdrawing from the race, Jones endorsed Archibong. In a statement to Project Q Atlanta, Jones said that, “With 5 contenders vying for the District 5 council seat, the odds of a single candidate reaching the necessary ‘50% plus 1’ threshold to win are slim; thus triggering the need for a second run-off election to be held in December. Hopefully, by my exit from the race and supporting Natalyn, voters will see how important it is to re-elect someone with a proven track record to the seat.” Archibong has also picked up an endorsement from state Rep. Keisha Waites, currently one of three openly gay members of the Georgia General Assembly. Archibong was one of 11 council members to support the resolution to support same-sex marriage last year. She also voted against the legislation that would have forced adult businesses off of Cheshire Bridge Road.

Archibong has come under fire in recent weeks after settling with the city’s Board of Ethics for failing to disclose paying more than $11,000 in taxpayer money to her brother’s company in 2007 and 2008. The settlement included a $250 fine, and the papers indicate that Archibong cooperated in full during the investigation. City Council, District 6 Openly gay representative Alex Wan, whose popularity in the gay community took a hit during the Cheshire Bridge rezoning debate earlier this year, is running for reelection in District 6. He faces two opponents: Mike Boyle and Tracey Austin. During his first term, Wan pushed for the Atlanta City Council to vote on a resolution supporting same-sex marriage. The resolution passed 11-2 late last year, and it also led to Mayor Reed’s public support of same-sex marriage. More recently, Wan aided in helping restore Piedmont Park – a part of the councilman’s district – for Atlanta Pride and the AIDS Walk after Music Midtown’s rainsoaked event destroyed large portions of the park. Still, Wan’s popularity in the gay community was dinged earlier this year as he led the charge to remove adult businesses from the Cheshire Bridge corridor, including some gay-owned and gay-aimed businesses. That measure was ultimately voted down by the City Council in a 6-9 vote.

Alex Wan 20 // davidatlanta.com

Wan’s two opponents, though straight, have stated their own support for the LGBT community. In an interview with the GA Voice, Austin stated her desire to propose a position for an “Administrator for Equal Opportunities and Rights,” to be assigned by the mayor and council, which she hoped would encourage an LGBT employees and allies network. Boyle, meanwhile, has pointed to his support of Chelsea Manning during her trial, and has also criticized Wan for what he believes was a lack of involvement in smoothing over the relationship between the Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Eagle following the Eagle’s 2009 raid.

CARRIE FOR THE QUEER AGE ChloĂŤ Grace Moretz talks gay brothers, queer take on classic and not being a lesbian BY CHRIS A Z ZOPARDI photos: Screen Gems 24 // davidatlanta.com

W

e might not have telekinetic powers, but the gay community knows what it’s like to be Carrie. We know the torment from kids at school. We know the pressure from parents to change who we are. It only makes sense, then, that a lesbian filmmaker – Boys Don’t Cry writer/director Kimberly Peirce – give her spin on Stephen King’s creepy classic, first adapted to screen in 1976 with Sissy Spacek in the titular role.

eventually emotionally combust in several different ways: in suicide, in massacres, in whatever else. And the sadness about this movie is, it’s what you’ve seen in real life; it’s just portrayed on a screen. It’s relevant because of the things that have been going on, and it strikes a deeper chord than it did in the ’70s. What was it like working with Kimberly Peirce?

Working with Kim is something that’s always been a dream for me. She’s an absolutely brilliant director and she taught me so much as an actor, especially not being scared to jump into things. Also, she shared a lot of her personal experiences with me. Because Kim is a lesbian, I saw a whole other side of what she went through (being gay) in a different time period. It was interesting to see the different takes on it, me being a young straight kid who’s never had to deal with that. As if you weren’t cool enough, you recently told I’ve dealt with bullying in different aspects, but my friends the press that you stuck up for your brothers when who are lesbians – and gay people in general – have dealt they were being teased for being gay. with another level of bullying. The reboot stars 16-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz as Carrie (Julianne Moore plays her intensely religious mother, Margaret White). We caught up with Moretz to chat about her gay brothers inspiring this take on the iconic character, the queerness of Peirce’s reimagining and why people think the actress is a lesbian (but shouldn’t).

Aww, thank you. People say that, but I don’t even do it to have that effect. I do it because I know what’s right and I know what’s wrong, and I grew up with my two gay brothers who were completely ostracized and manipulated into thinking what they were feeling, from the time they were born, was wrong and sinful and potentially life-threatening. That’s so aggravating to think about that when someone can, you know, smoke their entire life and people would never judge them. But just because you choose to be with the same sex, people can be a little cagey.

Does the lesbian question come up often for you – not because you have two gay brothers, but because I saw a YouTube video of you simply stating, “I’m not a lesbian”?

How much of your brothers’ personal experience became a part of your experience on Carrie? Did you have them in mind while you were playing her? Yeah, of course. Whenever you play a character that is going through certain things and you can, in some way, understand them even more – when you have a personal aspect that can actually relate to the character – then it takes (the role) to a whole other level, because you’ve seen it and you’ve experienced it. Why didn’t people mess with you when you were younger? They obviously didn’t know you’d grow up to be Carrie. (Laughs) I dealt with a lot of stuff when I was younger. I had girls tell me it was a dress-up party and I showed up in a ballet-dancing outfit and it turned out that it wasn’t a dressup party. No one was dressed up except for me. Bullying, particularly in the LGBT community, has been a hot topic in the last few years. With that said, how is Carrie particularly relevant now? It strikes a definite chord within us because we have seen these kids who have been pushed so far and have been so isolated and so ostracized within their communities that they @DavidAtlantaGA // 25

(Laughs) Wait, what? Why’d I say that? Did someone ask me? There’s no context to the video; it’s literally just you debunking a lesbian rumor. I’ve actually gotten so much shit my entire career. Because of the characters I play, people have always said, “Oh my god, are you a lesbian because you play an action hero?” And it’s just like, “Noooo! And why are you so stereotypical for thinking that you can’t be a strong woman without being a lesbian?” Why do you gravitate toward strong female roles? They’re close to home. For me, playing these fiercer characters is easiest for me. Where I thrive the most is playing these characters that are strong and forthright. Just being able to play characters like Carrie who are vulnerable and scared is more of a stretch for me and more of an acting job, which I find particularly a bit more interesting. But I also love playing the fierce, empowering female characters, just because I think we’ve passed the point in time where female actors always have to be the damsel in distress.

and accept you into the fold, it is one that is very, very true and honest and they are very supportive. That’s all my brothers want from me! Did Kimberly leave her queer mark on this film? Yeah. Honestly, I think what I found interesting is, with her take on it she didn’t exploit female characters. I feel like in a lot of movies, especially horror movies, women tend to become sexually exploited. I think working with a female director – one that is a lesbian – she definitely respects women more. I found that enlightening in a way, and refreshing compared to a lot of male directors who just want, you know, sex in their movies because they think that’s what hits the teen community. You have Laggies with Keira Knightley coming out soon. Rumor is there’s some lesbian action between you and Keira. So … is there? (Laughs) There isn’t any! That was such a lie. It’s so funny. I talked to Keira about that and she said, with every single movie she’s ever done, that’s a rumor and she doesn’t know why it’s a rumor. But literally, in any movie she does with another female actor, that rumor comes out.

You must know that gay men really admire strong female characters. Because of the tough roles you Would you be up for it if the role required it? play, how would you feel one day being regarded If it’s appropriately done, I don’t have any fears about it. It’s as a gay icon? a real part of life, and as an actor you have to be able to porThat’d be crazy! It’d be such an honor to be considered that. tray any character. If it’s a brilliant role with a great director I think that is a community that, when they recognize you and a great script and everything else, then why not? 26 // davidatlanta.com

n music, there are acts that transcend things like race, sexual preference, or age. And they stick around for years. To me, the act that sticks out in my mind as the most influential of the 90s is by far the girls from across the pond that took the US by storm, the Spice Girls! Comprised of five friends (who are still friends to this day), the Spice Girls released hit after hit and helped shape a generation. Geri Halliwell (a.k.a. Ginger Spice), Emma Bunton (a.k.a. Baby Spice), Victoria Beckham (a.k.a. Posh Spice), Melanie C (a.k.a. Sporty Spice) and Melanie B (a.k.a. Scary Spice) were the girls that I looked up to for inspiration and confidence as a young gay. The Spice Girls decided to take a hiatus in the early 2000s to pursue individual careers, and they’ve all had massive success in different respects. My favorite Spice Girl is, and will always be, Scary Spice. She was the craziest, most rock-n-roll girl in the group.

we got into the studio with my producer and a few of my co-writers and we just wrote the song! A few days later, we did the video, and then boom! And I was like “Okay, I’m not backed by a major record company, I’m doing this all myself. I have a single and I have a video. So, I just pressed send and put it all out there!” It’s everywhere! It’s all over Facebook, Twitter, all kinds of social media! Everyone I’ve spoken to has loved it! You know, usually you have to do six or seven weeks of a radio tour, or a TV tour, promotion saying “Okay, my song’s gonna be out in three weeks, my song’s gonna be out in two weeks,” and I didn’t wanna have to do that! And cause I’m doing it all myself, I just thought I’m gonna do it; I’m just gonna put it out there, and a good song is a good song. Luckily, I got a good reaction!

We connected on the phone, while she was across the country in LA. After the unavoidable “Oh my God, it’s Scary Spice!” fan Can we expect a new album from you? girl moment, we got to chatting about her crazy life, her new music and what exactly happened to the Spice Girls. Well, I’ve been in and out of the studio, like I said, but now I have a fire in my tummy; I just wanna perform! I wanna do Hi Mel! How are you? more and more music and hopefully that’s not going to stop. I’ve never been invigorated like that before! I’m good! Very good, thank you! That’s a good feeling to have! Now, I know you First off, lemme just say that it is an absolute mentioned mentoring on America’s Got Talent, so dream to talk to you, as I grew up listening to the how is it dealing with Howard Stern, Howie ManSpice Girls when I was a young gay! So, this is a del and Heidi Klum? I feel like you probably have dream come true! one of the most fun jobs out there right now! (Laughs) Well, I’m glad that we can talk! Okay, so my first question is always the same. For those of us who don’t know who Mel B is – and I don’t think anyone DOESN’T know you by now – would you please introduce yourself? I’m Mel B, I’m a Spice Girl, and I’ve got my new single “For Once In My Life” out now! You know, it’s a feel good song. It’s just about where I’m at right now. Life can be really humdrum and boring and we all have excess baggage and the song is just about letting it all go and doing it for you!

Well, I’ve known Heidi Klum for quite some time now; I’ve done her shows over in Europe. Howard Stern interviewed me, oh my God, 18 years ago! And this is the first time I’ve actually met Howie Mandel. We’re 4 completely different people and it just works. We all get on, we all like each other, and we all hang out after the show. We went over to Howard’s place for dinner the other day, went over to Heidi’s house for a nice private dinner, I mean, we actually just genuinely like each other! Well, that’s a good perk to have! Now, since it was a big part of my childhood, I would like to talk about the Spice Girls, if that’s okay with you.

It’s been eight years since you’ve released your last song, so let me ask you: why now? Why wait until now to release new music?

Oh yeah! Of course! I love the Spice Girls! Us girls have been friends for over 20 years. I was partying with Mel C a couple of weeks ago, I had dinner with Geri Halliwell three weeks I’ve been in and out of the studio for the last eight years, and ago. We’re really tight, us girls! same thing, which is spreading the word of feeling confident about yourself as a woman and just enjoying yourself! Life’s too short!

There was never a breakup! We got back together last year, so if you think about it, we haven’t really ever broken up in 20 years.

Everybody in the Spice Girls had their own indiOkay, so you would say that you guys are still vidual character, Sporty, Posh, Baby, etc. Why did together? you choose the name “Scary Spice”? Yeah! I mean, we’re friends! We enjoy each other’s company, You know what? None of us actually chose our names! It we hang out together, and there was never a breakup! was this little teeny bopper magazine, I think it was called Top of the Pops, and it listed all of our names and it just Well, fingers crossed for another reunion tour! Movstuck; we liked it! We didn’t wanna change it, we were like “I ing on, you are 38 years old and smoking hot for don’t mind that name. Do you mind that name?” and we just your age, even after having three biological children decided to roll with it. and one stepdaughter. What’s your secret? Well, that answers a question that has riddled me for years! I’ve always wondered that! Now, you said you still keep in touch with the girls, and I know you guys did a reunion tour which sold out everywhere, a couple of years ago, as well as the Olympics. Are you guys ever gonna get back together? Well, I’m actually the worst person to ask this because I’m always championing a Spice Girls reunion. I will be the first one to say “Okay, let’s get back together next month,” “let’s get back together next year,” “let’s get together in 2 years.” I’m the worst one you could ever ask that question to! (Laughs) (Laughs) Well, you keep on pushing for it! And I’ll be front row! Okay, now for the big question. What actually brought on the breakup of the Spice Girls? 32 // davidatlanta.com

You’ve just got to work out and eat healthy! That’s not a secret, everybody knows that. It’s a commitment! (Laughs) I work out 45 minutes at least 2-3 times a week and I try to eat healthy Monday through Friday and then on the weekend, I BINGE! I eat whatever I’m craving! So, you have your new song, your new video and (hopefully) a new album coming soon! Do you have any dreams of doing a solo tour? You know what, I’m booking that right now! I’m going to Australia in the next week, then I go back to the States, then I go to the UK! So, there you have it, folks! Keep an eye out for Mel B, cause she is on the move! And keep your fingers crossed for a potential Spice Girls reunion. To learn more about Mel B, follow her on social media at @OfficalMelB and her website www.melaniebrown.com!

HAIM, Days Are Gone

Goodbye, Hannah Montana; hello tonguewagging, midriff-baring Miley Cyrus. Slipping out of her child-star skin, the infamous twerker leads a band of misfits to independence and self-empowerment on Bangerz, a fully realized breakout from Billy Ray’s former Disney-star daughter. She’s not so innocent anymore, and that’s the point. At 20, Miley marks each song on her fourth release – from the single that launched her reinvention, “We Can’t Stop,” to the “edgy” vulgarities on “Do My Thang” – with the same defiance of the tattoo she got without telling her mom. It’s actually kind of…liberating. It’s just not all that surprising of a girl gone wild: “Love Money Party” – a song so straightforward it makes Ke$ha look like a code that needs cracking – is exactly what’s expected of a collection that has derived its name from the British word for sausage. Thankfully, Bangerz takes some interesting detours: “SMS,” featuring Britney Spears, is rooted in delicious Euro-house; “Adore You,” a strange way to launch and really kind of drudging, is sweet-sounding Cyrus, who parts the hardcore image for this vulnerable slow jam; “My Darlin’” is a bizarrebut-not-bad, and shockingly moving, collaboration with rap emcee Future that works a “Stand by Me” sample into fuzzy synths and a booming bass line. Then there’s “4x4,” where old Miley lingers in the twang leanings of the track’s “Cotton-Eyed Joe” gallop. It’s weirder than watching her hold up a fat foam finger on the VMAs. And in the case of Bangerz and its coming-out celebration, weird is good – and sometimes, even damn inspirational.

The charm of sibling trio Haim – twentysomething hipster sisters inspired by all the best early ’90s music you’ve been missing – is just the half of it. The fastrising California girl group obviously knows their way around a spirited easy-on-the-ears melody, and the ones on their outstanding Days Are Gone are ready to take over the charts. The blog-buzzed “Forever,” originally released on EP last year, features Danielle Haim’s whipped phrasing, a frenzied sound and a handclap breakdown, all coalescing into a thrilling pop piece. Percolating underneath these grooves are the throwback sounds of TLC, Prince and the Eurythmics, yesteryear’s heavy hitters who – along with Fleetwood Mac – have clearly laid the foundation for Haim’s R&B-tinged, classic rock-toned nu-folk. With the funkiness of a late ’80s jam, the title track – co-written with Jessie Ware, whose electro-soul presence just subtly shows up – sounds as awesomely old-school as it does new millennial. When the chorus comes, it’s as if Florence Welch went back a few decades and recorded one of the era’s biggest hits. A standout, certainly, is “Falling,” a punchy girl-power chant delivering an “if it gets rough, it’s time to get rough” mantra. And “The Wire,” with its vintage rock bop, is a sonic burst of divinity. Haim’s songs aren’t fussy, they’re not overproduced, and besides their obvious brilliance and infectiousness, what these girls do so well is making something new out of something old.

ALSO OUT

LORDE, Pure Heroine

GLEE, The Quarterback

Most 16 years olds are taking SAT prep and just getting their license, not knocking Katy Perry from the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and recording a debut as mature and captivating as Pure Heroine. “Royals” turned the New Zealand singer-songwriter into one of 2013’s most promising music stars, but this front-to-back gem – an ethereal-pop blend of gothic pop and Lana del Rey’s mysterious aura (see “Ribs,” a nostalgic standout) – proves she’s no fluke.

Saying farewell to Finn – and the actor who played him, Cory Monteith – prompted the recent episode of griefstricken musical catharses on Glee. Even more intimate than Adele’s version, Lea Michele’s deeply touching “Make You Feel My Love” is especially somber and painful considering her real- and TV-life relationship with him. The cast does an earnest version of “Seasons of Love” and Naya Rivera covers “If I Die Young” with affecting poignancy. The latter is a gut-wrenching elegy for a life gone too soon.

Matt Rinker for Atlanta City Council D I S T R I C T

While East Atlanta and our surrounding neighborhoods has had the same long-term, incumbent politician representing us since 2001, our crime rate has gone up, our job creation has gone down, and our voice on City Council voted AGAINST the Beltine and voted FOR an expensive new stadium we didn’t need. We deserve better from our City Council member. That’s why we need Matt Rinker. On Tuesday, Nov. 5th, vote Matt Rinker for Atlanta City Council.

Westbrook will be dependent on community support for survival over the 48 hour period. The vigil includes a community meeting and candlelight service at 6 p.m. on Nov. 2, and concludes with a party featuring the Armorettes. Why 48 hours? This Week in Theatres About Time: Richard Curtis, the writer/director of Notting Hill and Love, Actually, blends romance and time travel in his latest film. Don’t let the trailers fool you, though: this is less love story and more life story. Blue is the Warmest Color: Winner of this year’s Palme d’Or at Cannes, this French film focuses on a young girl who becomes involved with an older art student, leading to an intense love story between the two women. Ender’s Game: Based on the classic sci-fi novel, the film has been at the center of controversy over anti-gay statements made by author Orson Scott Card. The villains in the film being called “Buggers” doesn’t help.

Dear Miss Tiger, Do vampires and werewolves really exist? I’m a believer in the supernatural but my sister thinks I’m weird. I also think most of them are gay. How do you weigh in on the subject? -Alberto Dear Alwerido, Well, let’s see ... I’m sure you suck about every dick you can sink your teeth into and your sister howls while getting her upper lip waxed, therefore, I guess you could say they really do exist! Dear Miss Tiger, I’m a psychic and work out of my home. My husband is affecting my income. I got clients hollering and by God they got a right to! He’s wearing my pantyhose while they’re here getting their cards read. Some of them thought he was in a costume and others thought he was a transvestite. The truth is, he wears pantyhose to help with the varicose veins. I don’t really mind but my clients are kicking up a storm. Any advice? -Mandy Dear Take A Break From Reading Clients And Read Your Husband For Filth, Be glad you even have any goddamn clients! If you could really see into the future, you’d have put a stop to this bullshit the moment he dragged home that first pair of Sheer Energy L’eggs from Wal-Mart. I agree with your clients. When I’m asking some hillbilly to look into her crystal ball, I want the bitch to see my future, NOT the reflection of some jackass runnin’ around in some goddamn sheer-toe pantyhose! Just wondering ... does your husband prefer the control top or 100% cotton crotch? And another thing - does he have a fierce tuck? Give me a whiskey. Charge $13. Excuse me? Do I get a motorcycle with it? Does it come with Lady Gaga’s shoe?

Wow! You see how crazy someone is after you unfriend him on Facebook!

Funny you post shit about people being negative, but only a week ago you were bitching about being only a fuck bud. Can you say kettle, pot? Hypocrite!

When did gay people start becoming so “straight”? What happened to QUEER culture?! This horrible Halloween store clerk just called my priest outfit “fucking gay.” He knows I’m going for celibate gay.

To the previous post telling 5’9” guys not to top: from a guy who bottoms, I don’t mind 5’9” guys topping me good at all. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
