Atlanta’s best and most notable charities to individuals who are making a difference for others. As a publication, we tend to focus on things that are more “fun,” and while attention to some more serious parts of our community. Whether we’re talking about the fight against HIV and AIDS or combating the problem of homeless LGBT youth, or any other number of issues facing our community, it’s important for us to take some time to help out others. A Very Gaga Thanksgiving must have pulled in some decent ratings because she’s doing it again, this time with the Muppets on Lady Gaga and The Muppets’ Holiday Spectacular, set to air Thanksgiving night on ABC. True to its name – one where the show’s holiday content will straddle Thanksgiving and Christmas but is sure to be used as evidence by right-wing lunatics that there’s an ongoing “war” on Christmas taking place – Gaga will co-host alongside the Muppets. There’ll also be plenty of guest stars in the 90-minute musical special, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kristen Bell, RuPaul and Elton John. In other words, awesome TV. Do we start calling it ThanksGaga-ing now? Thanksgaying? Both would work.
Ellen DeGeneres wants Sophia Grace and Rosie as next Olsen twins
Their careers began with a YouTube video. British cousins Sophia Grace Brownlee, age 10, and Rosie McClelland, 7, sang Nicky Minaj’s “Super Bass” and became overnight sensations when they appeared on Ellen. Since then they’ve appeared on the show multiple times, charming audiences with every appearance and gathering big ratings for the show. They’ve interacted with Reese Witherspoon, Minaj and Taylor Swift and are now poised to be breakout stars on their own. DeGeneres is producing a sitcom pilot for the girls, set up now at NBC, and a direct-to-video movie in which they’ll star as Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood go versions of themselves. But hey, don’t take my word for it. I’m just a lady with silly lady thoughts. Instead, here’s Kevin Swanson, a man who voices his man thoughts on right-wing radio. “I don’t want to promote a wicked organization that according to its own website doesn’t promote godly womanhood,” Swanson says. “The vision of the Girl Scouts of America is antithetical to a biblical vision for womanhood.” And what’s the biblical vision for womanhood? Shut your whore mouth and make your man a sandwich. Amen. Now, I know what you’re thinking: But, but… does this mean no Girl Scout cookies? Yep. “I don’t want to support lesbianism, I don’t want to support Planned Parenthood and I don’t want to support abortion, and if that be the case I’m not buying Girl Scout cookies,” says Swanson. FACT: Every time you buy a box of Trefoils a girl swears off boys forever and gets an abortion. Look, I know this is going to be hard for a lot of you. Thankfully, Swanson offers a workaround. “I suppose if you take a big, fat, black magic marker and you say, ‘Give me that box,’ and you start marking out all of the references to the Girl Scouts of America on all the boxes then maybe we’re not promoting that organization anymore and I’d be willing to buy it,” he says.

Just cross out the Marlboro logo on your pack and write “KALE CHIPS.” Spend too much time watching TV and not enough time exercising? Grab that sharpie and scrawl “TREADMILL” across the cushions of your couch.

tlanta is among the top cities in the nation for charitable donations, ranking fourth in a study by The Daily Beast in 2011. A big contributor to that ranking ties into the LGBT community. With a wide number of charities focused on the LGBT population, our community is overflowing with resources for those less fortunate than others, those afflicted with chronic and fatal diseases, and those who have had to do without. With the Thanksgiving season kicking into gear, we’re highlighting just some of the best and brightest organizations serving Atlanta’s LGBT community.
Jerusalem House About the Organization: Like some of the other organizations on this list, Jerusalem House focuses on HIV/AIDS. For this organization, the focus is on housing. The organization is active in the LGBT and LGBT-friendly community, in order to provide our community with a way to positively impact the lives of children. The organization sends children to summer camp, and provides them with school supplies and holiday gifts.

PARTYING WITH A PURPOSE: Mike Woodside Sets Fundraising Record BY BILLY JONES

IDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run has experienced an amazing campaign this year. As of Oct. 20, the day of the major event, Atlanta and her friends and family raised $1,000,582, and the donations continue to roll in until the end of the campaign. Of the participants who raised funds, Atlanta resident Mike Woodside stands above the rest. With a goal of $16,000, Mike and his friends, Ready for Hope, have exceeded their goal by nearly 100%; as of October 30, Mike and the group have raised an astounding $31,920. Mike moved to Atlanta 11 years ago, and registered for the Walk a few months later with a friend/co-worker. That year, Woodside managed to raise $115, which wasn’t enough for the t-shirt fundraising incentive. This didn’t discourage Mike from being involved again; each year since, he has raised more than the previous year through Facebook, emails, bar busts, and involving community businesses. In early spring 2013, Mike came up with the idea of Ready for Hope, also known as R4H. The idea behind the group: “party with a purpose.” Ready for Hope started with a “Bear B Que” at the Atlanta Eagle. Next was a weekend of events: a Friday night kick-off party at Heretic, Saturday pool party at the home of Mark Baker (a friend of Woodside), and a wrap-up party at Jungle on Sunday. These four events alone yielded an astonishing $20,000.
fundraising is a community effort that requires commitment from friends who are just as passionate. Mike, friends, and a number of sponsors and in-kind donors made the purpose clear: raise funds; have fun; restore hope. For veteran fundraisers and newcomers to AWA5K, Mike emphasizes that one should “set a realistic goal” and to not be discouraged while fundraising. One should aim to meet the amount one raised the previous year, thank donors for their involvement, and have fun doing it. “Friends asking friends” goes a long way in making impact. Among the ways fundraisers can do this: send appeals to friends and family, post a personal fundraising link on Facebook (all walkers/runners have the opportunity to create a personal fundraising page when they register for AWA5K), thank donors personally and publicly, and keep everyone updated on the progress. AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run 2013 is still not finished. Ready for Hope will have one last hurrah on Nov. 10 at Jungle from 6 p.m. – midnight, where the group will celebrate Keith Young of GA Boy Productions’ birthday with a tea dance. A portion of the door sales will be donated to Ready for Hope. The final opportunity to make donations to AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run 2013 is Nov. 30. Planning for the second annual Ready for Hope, meanwhile, has already begun.
Over the years, Mike has learned the HIV statuses of friends, and discovered how important it is that AID Atlanta and other HIV/AIDS service organizations stay funded. Mike quotes the statistic that a new HIV infection occurs every 9.5 minutes; in the 36 minutes that we spoke, four people had become infected with HIV. ou may know him as Beverley Leslie, Brother Boy, or even Mr. Blackly from The Help, but this 4’11” actor is named Leslie Jordan and he wants you to know it! Hailing from Chattanooga, Jordan is a fierce queen and gay icon. Known to make appearances throughout Atlanta, Jordan will be back in town Nov. 24–25 with frequent collaborator Del Shores as part of a charity event for AID Atlanta. I got the chance to chat with Jordan about his favorite roles, his upcoming appearances in American Horror Story: Coven and more! You’re coming into town Nov. 24–25 for an event for AID Atlanta. How did that come about?
The head of AID Atlanta came down and asked my agency what it would cost to get me and, of course, my agency gave an astronomical quote of what I cost. But it’s a benefit for AIDS, so you don’t want to pay your entertainment too much, right? So, he actually flew to New Orleans where I was shooting American Horror Story, and I gave him a much lower quote, money wise. And I know some people think that I should do this for free, since it’s charity, but this is my bread and butter! This is all I do! But it will be a fun night full of comedy with Del Shores and me! What do you like most about Atlanta? What keeps you coming back here? Well, I’m from Chattanooga, so I practically grew up there! There was a restaurant called Kitty Cat’s Porch, and we would drive down there when I was a kid to eat. That place actually had the very first salad bar I ever saw, and I thought it was just the neatest thing! (Laughs) And then I left home at 17, for Atlanta and that’s when I came out of the closet – in ’73 or ’74. So, over the years, any chance I get to come back to Atlanta, I take it.
Miami and New York and worked with horses everywhere. Then, I went back to school when I was 27 at the University of Tennessee, and I got a degree in theater. After I graduated, I moved out to California. And for the first five years I was out there, I did mainly commercials. I had a really huge commercial career, I was kind of like that girl on the Progressive commercials; everyone knew me from my different commercials. I would say my “big break” would be a TV show called Murphy Brown. It was a really funny part. [Jordan played one of Murphy’s legion of secretaries during the show’s first season.] And the day after it aired, my agent called me and was like “Everybody’s on the phone right now. Steven Spielberg wants to work with you, Burt Reynolds saw it, Pee Wee Herman saw it.” And I’ve heard of overnight success, but I’ve never actually seen it happen until then. So I guess I would have to say Murphy Brown was my big break. Do you feel that being an openly gay man has hindered your career at all? Well, ya know, it was funny. When I got to L.A. in ’82, it was very wink, wink, nudge, nudge. All the casting directors were gay, the producers were gay, my agents were gay. And they would tell me “Don’t be so gay now. Keep your feet on the ground. Put your voice in a lower register, we can’t have all that carrying on!” And so I don’t think it really hindered it, because I’m a character actor. If I had been a young leading man like Zac Efron then it might have made a difference. But I was so character anyway. The fact that I was a little sissy was a selling point, ya know?
There’s something about Atlanta that I really love! If you go out in L.A., let’s say you go out in West Hollywood, all the boys have an agenda. They’ve planned their outfits, and they’re hoping to get discovered, or meet a producer. Everybody’s trying to slip you a script to read, that kind of stuff. You can go anywhere in Atlanta, like Blake’s, and it’s just cute boys in flip-flops and shorts in the summertime. I just really love the Midtown area. I love everything about Atlanta, I just don’t know if I could live there. If I moved back down south, I’d probably move closer to my mother, up near Chattanooga. Or even move up to the mountains of North Carolina. I have such a big life here in California that I don’t think I could leave it, but I do love visiting Atlanta! So you mentioned that you moved out to Atlanta at 17. How did you get your start? What was your “big break”? Well, I didn’t start acting for many years. I got into racehorses, actually. I worked as an exercise racer up in a tiny town north of Atlanta called Cartersville. After that, I went to @DavidAtlantaGA // 25
actually started as a short story that Del wrote, as well as a couple of others. And he called me one day and said that he had put all these stories together into a play. We did a reading of Sordid Lives, the play, and the next day I met him at the dog park, and I told him it was too much, that he needed to toss it. It was so all over the place. Now, in my defense, it didn’t have the funeral scene yet, which tied everything in so nicely! I told him to toss it, but I’m glad he didn’t listen to me! (Laughs) And then, of course, second would be Beverley Leslie from Will & Grace, beause I had so much fun with that part; it was so silly. Which actually leads me right into my next question! How did it feel to win an Emmy for Best Guest Actor against people like Martin Sheen and Patrick Stewart?
But they had different names for it back then. They would say a “mama’s boy” or someone a little “nebbish” or a little “fey”, cause they would want someone gay without them actually saying the word GAY. And then there came a time where everyone wanted a gay person on their TV show, but they would say “we want you to be a little more like Niles on Frasier.” He wasn’t even gay on that show! I mean, he’s gay in real life but gay to them was very urbane and witty. So they’d constantly tell me to act this way or this way and I was like “Honey! You can’t tell me how to be gay! I came out of my mama’s womb and landed in her high heels, honey!” So, out of everything that you’ve ever worked on, what has been your favorite experience? My favorite part was a movie called Sordid Lives. Have you ever seen it? I know you’re a bit young. Of course! That’s part of my gay trifecta along with 9 to 5 and To Wong Foo! Well, there you go! The reason that I think it’s my favorite part is cause I’ve have been able to work with people like Del Shores who have allowed me to do my thing. Like, right now, with American Horror Story, it’s very set. They know what they want the character to be like, to wear. With Del Shores, I have an open reign; I have a say. The Emmy that I won was given away at the Creative Arts Emmys, which is not the “Emmy” Emmys. And I didn’t even know that! I flew my mother out, paid $500 for a pretty new dress & the only one on the red carpet was Kathy Griffin! (Laughs) I said “Well, where are all the big stars?” and they said the Emmys weren’t until next week and I said “Well, what the fuck is this?!” (Laughs) But in my speech, I was so happy that I had won that I said in my speech, “There’s two ways to combat homophobia, that I know of. One is humor, which I learned in sixth grade when we had to play dodgeball. And two, is to put a face on it.” And I think when the history of the gay community is written, people will look at Will & Grace as a turning point. Things really changed radically during those four–five years. And I think it’s because the culture had a face. They accepted those characters. They laughed, they loved, they were normal people. I was so honored to be a part of it; even a small part. So, to have won that Emmy was amazing! Awesome! Well, my last question for you is what can you tell us about your role on the hit show American Horror Story: Coven? (Laughs) Not a whole lot! These people have threatened me with my life, if I tell you anything! All I can tell you is that I’m a warlock, I’m on a council and you’re just gonna have to watch to see! Broadway Combats AIDS BY NICHOL AS GR ANT
S
ome people may be surprised to learn that Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grantmaking organizations. It may surprise people even more to learn that since the founding of the organization (which actually started life as two separate non profits and combined in May of 1992) that the charity has raised over $225 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States. Across the Unites States really does mean just that. BC/ EFA awards annual grants to hundreds of groups nationwide, including several in the metro Atlanta area. “We work hard year-round to raise as much money as possible, to then make grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations, including 13 throughout Georgia (and six right in Atlanta such as Open Hand, Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalition and AID Atlanta,” says Danny Whitman, Director of Communications and Development for BC/EFA. A charity connected to Broadway can, of course, boast an “A-list” of supporters. Board members for the organization include Alan Cumming, Nathan Lane, Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera and dozens more.

Touring companies of The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Million Dollar Quartet, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Sister Act and Wicked as just a small handful of the theatrical artists that have crisscrossed our country entertaining millions, and raising millions as well. (This spring The Book of Mormon and The Lion King will be two of the shows being presented by Broadway in Atlanta at The Fox Theatre.)

‘DALLAS BUYERS CLUB’ The Unlikeliest of Love Stories McConaughey and Leto talk inspirational HIV drama BY CHRIS A Z ZOPARDI
T
he AIDS crisis reached a devastating peak in the mid ’80s, a time before cocktail therapies were sustaining life. Then, people were diagnosed and dead within days.
Ron Woodroof should’ve been. The party boy, who was given just 30 days to live after he contracted HIV in 1986, defied the odds – and, by smuggling anti-viral medications from across the globe into the U.S., helped others do the same. “The hard truth that I could see, and the way I approached it, was him getting HIV is what gave him his purpose in life,” says Matthew McConaughey from the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, still looking slender after dropping 40 pounds to play Woodroof in the critically acclaimed 32 // davidatlanta.com
dramedy Dallas Buyers Club. “That’s the first time that he had something that he grabbed ahold to for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day, until he was here no longer. That’s where he found a real identity. That’s where he found a purpose.” Jean-Marc Vallée, director of C.R.A.Z.Y. and The Young Victoria, tells the Texas cowboy’s story in this dramatized adaptation of his inspiring evolution from hard-edged homophobe to unlikely hero – and all from the perspective of a heterosexual man who thought only gay people got HIV. “He doesn’t start off as this crusader for the cause,” McConaughey says. “He’s not waving the flag. If anything, he’s a selfish son of a bitch who’s doing what he can to survive.”
To find that fortitude, McConaughey channeled a buddy’s real-life battle with cancer. “He had a lot of similar instincts, fight and characteristics that Ron had,” he says. “I secretly had some of this based on this guy and the way he was fighting against cancer.” Using a friend to inspire his performance – along with Woodroof’s diary, which the actor considered to be his “Pandora’s box” – McConaughey tapped into Ron’s humanity, says Vallée. “When he portrays a guy who’s racist and homophobic, and then his arc changes slowly but surely without even realizing it – he’s going to become the spokesperson of the gay community he’s been bashing for years and years – that’s what (McConaughey) brought naturally.” As he becomes a crusader for advancements in HIV medicine and the gay community, Woodroof’s journey leads him to Rayon (Jared Leto, who won our hearts in the mid ’90s during his My So-Called Life stint), an HIV-positive trans woman with just enough spunk to stand up to Woodroof’s narrow-minded machismo. “Rayon is quick to love and fall in love,” Leto says. “She’s full of grace and charm and a huge, open heart, and Ron provides some kind of a father figure. She was shunned by her father at a very young age and, in a lot of ways, Ron provided that father figure, that big brother – and there was a lot of love there.”
Vallée shares that sentiment, noting a scene where Woodroof sticks up for Rayon. “This is a love story between two guys,” he says, “and we’re not telling that, and it’s not really about that, but these guys love each other.” He pauses, laughing about the possibility of taking their relationship one or maybe two steps further. “I was asking myself, ‘Should we hint to the audience that maybe they’ll have sex together?’” Leto’s ‘role of a lifetime’ So how did Jared Leto fare in heels? “I was a bit of a natural, to tell you the truth,” he laughs. “Size 12, baby!” The reason for that, and it’s just now dawning on Leto: This ain’t his first time at the rodeo. “I forgot about this, but there was another project years ago – I forgot what it was for – where I went and auditioned in drag for another film and walked down Fifth Avenue and thought I would have everybody fooled. But nope, nobody was having it.” In Dallas Buyers Club, every time Leto slipped into those heels, he slipped right into Rayon. And he did it often. “Every morning when I showed up on set – it didn’t matter how exhausted I was – I always stepped out of that van, that glorious passenger van, in my heels,” he says. “That

was one of the little things that helped me lock into the character.” The transformation, though, involved more than shoes. “You practice,” he says. “It’s one of the reasons why I was in character for the entire course of shooting, so I could get as much time in her skin as possible. But there was a lot going on. There was the gender. There was the voice. There was the dialect. There were the heels. There was the waxing. There were all kinds of things that made it a really unique experience.” He also had another priority: Embrace her as a sexual being.
But before securing the role of Rayon, Leto wanted to dig deeper. To do so, he met with young trans kids to discuss their challenges – and to give him a better understanding of what life looks like for transgender people. He calls that time with these teens “impactful.” “For me, it was important to identify with the desire to get to know oneself – one’s true self – because that’s what identity is really about,” Leto says. “It goes even beyond gender. It’s who are you in your heart, and how do you express who you are? And Rayon was in a process of discovery as well. She was finding out who she really was and certainly wanted to live her life as a woman and identify with that. So, (for me, it was) a really beautiful experience and a role of a lifetime.”
“Oftentimes, you see this role in a film and it’s a punch line, it’s a bit of a stereotype, and it’s also a safe choice for a lot of Behind the scenes it was too. Having minimal time to mingle during the intense 25-day shoot, McConaughey remembers it a little differently: “I gotta tell you, I had blinders on.” But he chuckles when asked how immersed he got with the gays. “Well, pretty immersed in those bars!”

ASO’s ‘Around the World’ Features Big Names and Beautiful Music BY MAT THE W HARRELL Carlo Montanaro
T
he Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is bringing in two musical icons for its first ever “Around the World” concert. The evening will feature three pieces from different areas across the globe to create an experience that accentuates the rich universality of symphonic music. Italian conductor Carlo Montanaro headlines the show in his first appearance at The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. After years of classical training Montanaro began conducting major concerts in 2001 and has since made appearances all over the world from Rome to Florence to Tokyo. Vice President for Artistic Planning, Evans Mirageas, says that “we’ve wanted to engage this exciting young Italian conductor for some time” and that “[he] suggested the New World Symphony.” Montanaro will conduct the orchestra in two pieces: Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien and Dvor˘ák’s “New World” symphony.
Rogé will be playing Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Egyptian”), the composer’s final piece which was written in 1896. Once the collection of works came together the theme culminated seamlessly. “That’s how it happens sometimes a series of seemingly unrelated events coalesce into a fun idea that is also artistically first rate” says Mirageas. “People love the idea of traveling with music.” “Around the World” promises to be a night filled with cultural diversity and beautiful music. The show with its brilliants guests will run from Nov. 7–9. Tickets are available for sale on the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s website at atlantasymphony.org.
Capriccio Italien was composed over a five month span in 1880. The fantastical piece was inspired by the artist’s trip to Rome during which he saw a carnival featuring Italian folk music and dance. The music represents classical elements of Italian history in an opulent manner and traditionally lasts around 15 minutes. The second piece Montanaro will conduct, Symphony No 9, “New World,” is a masterpiece of American Folk music composed over three years and is often considered metonymic of the romantic era of concert music. The grandiose piece varies in length and is made even more famous as being taken by Neil Armstrong on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. Pascal Rogé is making his return appearance at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Mirageas expressed the excitement surrounding him: “The pianist is one of the most respected and beloved French artists working today. He has not been in Atlanta for many years owing to his busy schedule and so we were delighted to bring him back.” The current Ambassador of French Music is one of the most well-known people in orchestral music, and his name can be found at nearly every major concert around the world.
