Bisexual Burdens

“I mean, I am bisexual, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I don’t need to – I’m sorry if this is a bit vulgar – but I don’t need to eat pussy in front of the whole world for people to take me seriously. You can believe it or not, it’s just here, I’m honest. I’m not saying it to be controversial; there you have it, here I am, take it or leave it.” Lady Gaga made this statement regarding her sexuality to Attitude in advance of this week’s release of ARTPOP. It’s a reminder of the reaction some parts of the LGBT community have towards Gaga: the idea she’s trying to use the community as part of an image strategy. It’s also yet another reminder of the tendency to write off the “B” in LGBT as a phase or grab for attention. It’s not. It’s a legitimate orientation, just as much as being gay or straight. Of the various issues coming out of the LGBT community, this is one of the ones I’m most passionate about. While I don’t personally identify as bi, some of my closest friends do, and I’ve seen them encounter specific issues I didn’t have to face when coming out as gay. I’ve never had to even suggest proving my sexuality by demonstrating it in front of others. And while I’m not suggesting the entire gay and lesbian community feels this way, far too many of us treat bisexuals the way many straight people treat us. It’s an ugly part of our community, and it’s something we have to actively work to change.

Atlanta’s Own Envy Van Michaels Dances with Morgan Freeman!

E

ven though they cut the damn funeral scene I was a part of, I enjoyed the movie Last Vegas. It’s like a cross between The Bucket List, Grumpy Old Men and The Hangover! It stars Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline, Robert De Niro, and the great Morgan Freeman. However…I got over myself by the time they showed the party scene. One of the characters said, “Let the freaks in!” – and all kinds of characters entered the party including a lady with a snake, a few Cirque du Soleil performers, and to my delight, a few Atlantans like cutie pie local actor Joshua Holcombe, a quick second of Violet Chachki, a really nice scene with Savannah Leigh as an awesome Cher. And then, I perked up when I saw someone I’ve done several shows with looking like the star she was for that brief moment dancing with Morgan Freeman: Miss Envy Van Michaels. I left the theatre with a huge smile on my face. You know, it’s a great feeling to be happy for someone else! Envy has been doing drag for 10 years and has quite a few fans in Atlanta, and is currently Miss Black Continental at Large. Haha, shut up Envy! of the week: Bryan Fischer

“I do not believe people are born homosexual,” Fischer told his caller. “I believe it’s a matter of sexual behavior and conduct which is always a matter of choice.” This is no revelation. Fischer has long claimed that people aren’t born gay, but there are people who have gay sex because they eeny-meeny-miny-moed it or something. But worry not. He has scorn for single people, too. “We have single people in our churches,” he tells Wes, “and our message to them is, look, to have sex outside of marriage, I don’t care whether it’s gay sex or straight sex, to have sex outside of marriage is a sin in the eyes of God and we believe that you can remain abstinent, you can remain chaste, that you have a choice over what you do with your sexual impulses. You don’t have to give in to every sexual impulse that you feel.” You hear that pervs? Fischer is equal opportunity sexnegative. If you’re not married you shouldn’t be doing “it,” whether you’re doing gay “it” or straight “it.” Ha ha, just kidding. Fischer definitely cares whether you’re doing gay sex or straight sex. Because he doesn’t think same-sex couples should be allowed to get married. Which means he doesn’t think gays and lesbians should ever have sex. Unless, of course, they’re having sex with a straight person they tricked into marrying them. Wes then goes in for the kill. “I have something I would like to ask you,” he says. “Could you have sex with a man?” This question catches Fischer off guard. “Would I?” he asks. Wes corrects him: “Could you?”

t’s a dark day for gay and bi-curious men. Well, at least for all the gay and bi-curious men who were hoping to do the gay sex with the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer.

For years there have been rumors. Is he or isn’t he? Could this man who calls homosexuality a “disease” and “a sickness” secretly want to hump a hunk of a man?

“No,” Fischer replies, surprised laughter in his voice. When Wes reminds Fischer he claims gay sex is a choice, something people could chose to do or not do, rather than an orientation, Fischer responds, “Sure it is, I’m just saying it’s emotionally, morally, mentally impossible for me. …[T]here is nothing in me that would let me do that.” Alas. Sorry, guys.

Could this man who rails against homosexuality, saying that he is “grossed out by what homosexuals do,” be just another right-wing closet case? After all, Fischer would be in storied company: Larry Craig, Ted Haggard, George Rekers, Jim West, Mark Foley. I could go on.

Wes then points out that he feels the same way about women that Fischer feels about men.

But that all changed when a gay named Wes called up Fischer’s AFA radio program to have words with the man who, quite frankly, seems obsessed with homosexuality and consumed with vitriol for gays.

How convenient that what God wants so perfectly aligns with what Fischer hates. So keep it in your pants, homos, and thank God for your sexless lives. What a gift.

Thankfully Fischer can mansplain that. “Well that’s fine,” Fischer says. “Wes, my point is that if an individual does not have a legitimate way to satisfy their sexual impulses, Until now, nobody knew for sure. Until now, nobody had been then the path that God has designed for them is the path of brave enough to ask Fischer directly. abstinence, chastity and celibacy.”

In August of 2011, the boys of Southern Star had an art show at Youngblood Gallery to commemorate their first year in business. The show was entitled, Opening Doors, because “When one door closes, another one opens”, a direct reference to their falling out with Liberty leading to a whole new (and quite successful) venture. The artists featured in the show were Damien Bouchon, Daks, Bill Conner, Keet D’Arms, Chris Howell and Eric Thrice, as well as the shop’s “extended family”. Personally, Southern Star is my shop of choice. I have tried several other Atlanta tattoo parlors, and have not been as satisfied with the work, personable artists and cleanliness and professional atmosphere than that of Southern Star. I see Brian Gaddis for color pieces, and Keet D’Arms for realistic, black and white pieces.

Southern Star With two locations in Atlanta, the guys at Southern Star tattoo boast over 50 years of combined experience between the six of them. After several artists decided to leave Liberty Tattoo in 2011 and open their own shop, the result was a bright and shiny new parlor almost directly across the street from their old stomping grounds. The artists have permanent homes at either location. The Ponce artists include Bill Conner, Brian Gattis and Demian Bouchon; Little Five guys include Chris Howell, Eric Thrice and Keet D’Arms, several of whom have been mentioned in Prick Magazine and Tattoo Artist Magazine. 16 // davidatlanta.com

What Makes Them Special: After only a little under three years in business, SST has done well enough to open a second location a few miles away from the original site. Timeless Tattoo Founded in 1995 by elite artist Cap Szumski, who alone has almost 25 years of experience, Timeless Tattoo has been a part of Atlanta’s alternative street scene for almost 20 years. Private booths make getting tattooed at Timeless a personal experience, unlike many other shops where you get tattooed in front of God and everybody. If your tat is in a more private place, or if you are just a delicate, shy little flower, consider getting your work done at Timeless. Szumski, and the shop itself, have been written up and mentioned in Prick Magazine, Skin & Ink, Tattoo Magazine and International Tattoo Art Magazine and on tattooroadtrip.com. The other artists on location are Lew Hands, Brian Snape, Jenny Bunny Bunns, David Long and Barbara. Walk-ins are now welcome, as until recently, the shop was appointment only. Although you can show up for ink, we suggest you book an appointment if you have more than a simple, tiny tat in mind. This applies for any and all tattoo parlors. Go speak to your artist first, and give them time to draw and perfect your tattoo before you go slapping it on permanently- removal is more painful than the acquisition. Ink and Dagger’s award-winning tattooists include Russ Abbott, Kelly Doty, Eddie Stacey and Race Dylan, some of whom have been seen on Ink-N-Iron and Sullen TV. Their website is very user-friendly, and technologically forward. After you decide what you want and whom you want to tattoo it on you, go ahead and reserve an appointment online using the “Book an Appointment” button, a feature pretty much unheard of on tat studio sites.

Memorial Tattoo was opened in 2006 by 24-year career tattooist Phil Colvin in the East Atlanta neighborhood of the city. Tattoos and Progress A Preview of Ink & Drink Fest 2013 BY MAT THE W HARRELL

T

attoos serve a multitude of purposes: representing artistic expression, symbolizing important life events, looking sexy, and even benefiting youth. This weekend, Burkhart’s Pub will host an evening of fun to honor the craft of tattoo artistry as a benefit for Lost-N-Found Youth, an organization devoted to providing assistance to homeless LGBT youth in the Atlanta area. You may remember having seen these guys volunteering their time accepting clothing donations a couple of weeks ago outside of Burkhart’s. Ink & Drink Fest will kick off Saturday, Nov. 16 with a Meet and Greet with tattoo artists beginning at 8pm. This will also be the time to register for the contest to show off your ink and compete for over $1000 in prizes. The contest is to be judged by a panel headed by artist Amanda Mariscal and there will be first, second, and third place prizes awarded to the best tats. Don’t think that your ink has to be an awing masterpiece to win though; there will also be prizes awarded in the categories of “What Was I Thinking” and “Best Heartfelt Message.” Entry fee to the contest is a $10 donation to Lost-N-Found and, of course, larger donations are welcomed and appreciated.

Even if you’re not one of the lucky few to walk away with a prize you will not leave empty handed. Each paid registration includes a printed copy of the photo of you and your ink to be taken by Greg Brown of Greg Brown Designs as well as a gift from Jägermeister. You may also choose to make a donation and receive your gifts while opting out of the actual contest if you so wish. Burkhart’s encourages you to embrace your boldness and bare some skin to show those tats but remember guys, keep it legal. Be sure to arrive early, as registration for the contest will end at 10 p.m., with the winners to be announced soon after by Nicole Paige Brooks. The fun won’t end there, though, as Lost-N-Found will also be holding raffles throughout the night of gift baskets and gift certificates donated by sponsors. They will also be around all evening to share more 34 // davidatlanta.com

information with you about their inspiring cause that aims to provide shelter to those cast out and in need. Whether you want to show off that hot ink or just to help a good cause and maybe win some cash don’t miss this unique event. This will also be a great time to talk to some local tattoo artists and bring that idea you’ve had in mind for a while to life. It can often be scary trusting someone with a thing so permanent and this is the perfect chance to get to know some artist backgrounds and particular skill sets. So come out daring to bare, enjoy the artistry of tattoos, and help out a group that is set on making the future of the LGBT community brighter.

opardi z z A is r h C By CELINE DION, Loved Me Back to Life

KATY PERRY, Prism

To have the glassshattering lung power that Celine Dion has built an empire of love songs on in the last 20-some years hardly matters anymore. Shock value, personal stories of triumph and/or tragedy, and twerking – that’s how you sell an album, and Dion isn’t about to rub up on Robin Thicke. So that the singer is calling her latest, and first English-language album in six years, an “edgier” affair isn’t surprising. There’s a new generation of Adele fans still waiting to discover Celine’s still-powerful belt. And oh, does she belt. “Thankful,” a gospel-tinged highlight, is the kind of classic Celine song where you can practically see her doing that signature boob bop as she goes in for a series of runs. And there’s a choir. And that dramatic pause. But there’s also those notes that carry out the tunes that sound raspy and strained, like she’s serious about taking a trip to the dark side. Not like Eminem dark – but “Somebody Loves Somebody,” putting a no-good flame in his place, bites down with a set of teeth that Dion, always so sweet and pure, has rarely shown. Another glorious shift that goes gritty is “Breakaway,” a remarkable, spine-tingling showcase of the diva’s voice. Sounding smooth as silk, Celine reels it in on the refreshingly subtle “Thank You” and elicits man tears on “Always Be Your Girl,” a touching ode to her son. A collaboration with Ne-Yo, “Incredible” is a tepid mid-tempo, and the inclusion of two songs from her Vegas show – a cover of Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” and her duet with Stevie Wonder on “Overjoyed” – feel like padding on an otherwise strong, creative turning point in Dion’s career.

Damn you, divorce. You went and made Katy Perry all grown-up. Where’s the fireworks? The teenage dreams? They’re few and far between on Perry’s third major release, where her personal woes become cathartic self-empowerment anthems and criminally written true-life tales. Because this is possibly the worst of Perry’s career, let’s get “Ghost” out of the way. The track wants to be taken seriously. And it is a serious song: Aside from the introspective ballad “By the Grace of God,” it’s the most forward she’s been musically with regard to her relationship with Russell Brand and his text breakup. But these fourth-grade diary scribblings – “…but you hit send and disappeared in front of my eyes” – cheapen any emotion we’re supposed to be feeling. “This is How We Do” is an embarrassment, too. And not because Perry “raps.” Again, its rankness is due to how much the content is dumbed down with cringe-worthy words about getting nails done “all Japanese-y” and “sucking real bad at Mariah Carey-oke.” Prism doesn’t suck real bad, though. It has its moments, all of which come early: galvanizing mantra “Roar” has a chorus so insanely catchy it’s no wonder it ruled the charts for so long, power ballad “Unconditionally” soars to cosmic heights, and “Legendary Lovers” takes Perry to India, where the mysteriousness of the track, and the sultriness of her feathered voice, is imbued with a surprisingly not-lame Bollywood sound. So, cool – she’s taking artistic risks. But by the end of Prism, you kind of wish Katy were still kissing girls and blasting Reddi-wip from her tits.

DONNA SUMMER, Love to Love You Donna Spearheaded by her longtime collaborator and husband, Bruce Sudano, this posthumous tribute to Donna Summer recruits some of the best in the business to put a new spin on the disco gems in the queen’s catalog. It’s a (re)mixed bag. The good: Giorgio Moroder’s euphoric “Love to Love You Baby” and his other contribution, “La Dolce Vita,” a song he’d been working on with Summer before she passed last year that now – with his “we miss her so” intones – serves as an elegy. The not so good: A version of “Last Dance” that just goes to show that some songs of Summer’s should go untouched.

PANIC! AT THE DISCO, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! The arena-pop trio has always prided itself on being pretty odd. And though this isn’t them at their weirdest – or even their best, really – there are some unexpected turns on the band’s techno-tinged fourth album. Among them, a sample of a Sesame Street jingle on “Vegas Lights,” an EDM track as glittery as the city – the boys’ hometown – they’re celebrating; “Girls/Girls/Boys,” a bisexuality anthem with ’80s spirit; and the brooding standout “Casual Affair,” an electro-rocker that has more in common with Depeche Mode than Panic! at the Disco. @DavidAtlantaGA // 37

ndy Bell is nothing short of an institution of pop music. For over 28 years he and Vince Clarke, better known as Erasure, have made dance floors around the world pulse with infectious beats. Now, after a separation of over two years, the two have come back together to record Snow Globe, an unconventional but soul stirring and pulsating Christmas album that combines new takes on traditional holiday favorites and several original pieces that will soon find themselves as songs played year after year as the stockings get hung.

Christmas so we wanted a complete Christmas package.” When asked why they choose to put together an album that combined original compositions and long time favorites Bell says “We did half and half to take off the pressure. These are our favorite Christmas songs, my favorite being ‘White Christmas.’ It’s hard to put your own spin on songs that people know so well. We tried to make a music box version of ‘White Christmas.’ It’s very haunting and innocent just like a music box. It goes nicely with Christmas ornaments sparkling on trees. People can get jaded with Christmas, and we wanted to make it fresh.”

“We’ve been working on solo projects and the record company was pressuring us to get back together, “ says Bell. “Fans really wanted an album of Christmas music. We Bell says he is very proud of his vocals on this album; hadn’t produced anything since 1989 that had to do with when he began recording his vocals something strange 42 // davidatlanta.com

their album. It was like a vortex or spiritual connection.” Finding that inner choirboy as not as easy as it sounds. Bell and Clarke were admittedly nervous about seeing each other after such a long time apart.

Working on “Silent Night,” one of the album’s most beautiful tracks, Bell said he and Clarke were recording the song the same day some unusual neighbors were recording the same song.

“We were nervous to see each other again. You need a break after being together a long and intense time together. We needed time to cool off then come back together. But, it’s like meeting up with an ex, you feel a little embarrassed but then everything falls back into place again. You think, maybe, after writing 200 songs together, you worry that more won’t come out. Then by magic, it comes out.”

“We were recording ‘Silent Night,’ and in the studio next to us were a group of Italian monks recording Silent Night for

Erasure was formed in London, England and entered the music scene in 1985 with their debut single “Who Needs @DavidAtlantaGA // 43

For decades now, Bell has been seen as an icon on the gay community. In 1986 he famously told a British music publication “I don›t want to go out of my way to talk about it but I›m not going to pretend I›m not [gay]. I won›t portray a heterosexual in videos and we›re consciously doing lyrics that could apply to either sex.” His gay fan base remains extremely important to him, even after all these years. “It’s brilliant really, it’s a complete network that runs itself. I’ve been to so many gay pride festivals, meeting so many interesting people, and they are always taken care of. That has kept me going. For a long time it felt like we were ignored by straight press, if there is such a thing. Love Like That”. Following the release of their fourth single “Sometimes”, the duo established itself on the UK Singles Chart and became one of the most successful artists of the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s. From 1986 to 2007, Erasure achieved 24 consecutive Top 40 hits in the UK, while having 3 Top 20 hits in the US on the Billboard Hot 100: ‘’The Circus’’, “A Little Respect”, ‘’Blue Savannah’’, “Chains of Love”, ‘’Love to Hate You’’, “Always”, ‘’Breathe’’ and ‘’In My Arms’’. Snow Globe follows the group’s reputation for blazing pop, which has influenced modern day pop and EDM artists. Bell, however, enjoys listening to less mainstream musical performers and still holds tight to the acts that have influenced his musical career. The two key songs on the Christmas Record are the opening cover of the Latin traditional “Gaudete,” made most famous by Steeleye Span in the early 70s, and the original composition “Make It Wonderful.” For “Gaudete,” Bell learned phonetically rather than studying the Latin. His inner choirboy didn’t quite stretch that far. Originally programmed by Vince with just a drum accompaniment, he ended up adding keyboard lines to complement the raw rhythmic surge. “I just love the song,” says Bell. “I’m quite fond of Pagan British rituals, I even quite like Morris Dancing. It’s so absurd.” The exposition involved in a song as open and hopeful as “Make It Wonderful” came easily to Bell. “But again what I love is that Vince managed to add something quite childlike and almost scary to it.” 44 // davidatlanta.com

“It’s strange, in the beginning we were a novelty. Now being a gay performer is almost mainstream. The world has become very commercial, but with the gay community there are still grassroots organizations underneath.” Fans, both gay and straight, can rest easy. After the release of Snow Globe the band plans to start writing new material again in March and April and in August will embark on a new tour, which he says will include dates in the United States. In the meantime, Bell is staying busy with solo projects including a one man show that he will perform as part of the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. That show, may not be Bell’s only foray into the theatrical word in the future. “I’m not really a fan of jukebox shows. I’d rather choose songs that have meaning and create a story, a mixture of previous tracks and new material. I’d have to write new stuff and you have to have a story. It’s can’t just be boy meets girl.” Until an Erasure musical every pops on Broadway, Bell will certainly stay busy. After close to three decades of making music and delighting audiences and fans around the world, he shows no signs of slowing down for the next three decades. Fans can watch the trailer for Snow Globe on YouTube, and the album is available now. Bell will be performing in Atlanta with Book of Love at Opera on Dec. 17. f you’re a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, then you’re bound to have fallen in love with the Asian queen who almost snatched the title: Manila Luzon. Now, most people would be sore losers, but not Miss Manila! We got to chat about life after Drag Race, her upcoming Atlanta debut at The Other Show XXXL and more. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me today, Miss Thing! You are forever on the go! What have you been up to? Well, I just cleaned my bathroom and I did it in a full on sexy French maid costume! I’m just kidding. I didn’t clean. I just premiered a new show with Jujubee and Raven called Drag My Dinner Party on the Cooking Channel. It was executive produced by RuPaul, and we’ve been getting a lot of great response from it. Check you listings, children! I’ve been working on new music and it’s been taking forever because I’ve been so busy traveling the world performing for my fans! But look out for “Helen Keller,” a hip-hop duet with the amazingly talented (and sexy) Cazwell. We’ve been perfecting this song and video all year and you’re gonna all gag! Also, I have another song coming out soon that features season 5 winner Jinkx Monsoon, who is such a kiki! I cannot wait for everyone to hear these songs. Speaking of Drag Race, how has life been since being on the show? things that I wanted to in my life; just as Sahara was able to Amazing! I love traveling and meeting new friends around the do with hers! She wanted to be a star and dance and that’s world. I was in Spain, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, just what she did, and many, many people will remember her and Canada, if you count that as a different country. (Laughs) forever. What would you do differently about your stint on Drag Race? You almost won!!

What are you most excited about when you think about coming to Atlanta?

I wouldn’t change a thing. Because I didn’t win on season 3, I have only ever been to the airport – I fly Delta – so I’m exI was able to compete on All Stars, and ultimately birthed my cited to come! Gloria Estefan Lives for Loving You The Queen of Latin Pop on covers album, being ‘saved’ by gay fans and Broadway musical BY CHRIS A Z ZOPARDI photos: Jesus Cordero 52 // davidatlanta.com

Y

ou’d be lucky to see Gloria Estefan busting out the conga these days, but that doesn’t mean she’s not keeping on her toes. A spot on Glee last year, a new album, an upcoming Broadway musical, restaurants, hotels – the singer’s busier than ever, she says. We caught up with Estefan to chat about plans for her upcoming autobiographical stage show, being “saved” by gay fans and punking people with Gloria drag queens. What’s life like now for you compared to what it was in the ’80s? Supposedly I’m leading a quieter life, but I’m busier than I’ve ever been! (Laughs) In the ’80s, I was on the same cycle: write, go into the studio, record, then go on tour. All I could do was sleep, exercise and sing in the shows. I could do absolutely nothing else. Now, we just do so many other things. Back then we didn’t have two hotels and seven restaurants – all that came later – so in essence, we’re probably busier now than we’ve ever been. Plus: We’re working on that Broadway show. It’s very exciting.

I sure hope so. Music is my life. It’s always been. Your life evolves, your career evolves, and you can’t always be at the top. But I love music, so I might take a step back from the performance angle – and have done that already when my daughter was in school. But now she’s off to college, and so I wanna stay busy as hell! People used to say you were too American for the Latins and too Latin for the Americans. What did it feel like living between those two worlds? Did you feel like an outsider? Because I’ve lived in this bubble, sometimes you do. Early on, when I was a very little girl, I still remember trying to look for an apartment in Miami – you’re talking 1960 – and there were signs that said “No children, no pets, no Cubans,” and my mom would cry. I would say, “Mommy, what’s happening?” And I could see it. She tried to keep it away from me, but I saw discrimination back then.

I’ve led a kind of sheltered experience, and there’s always gonna be bigotry and racism – that’s just the way human beings are. People feel better about themselves if they put The Broadway musical is inspired by your own life. somebody else down. They’re always gonna find a group to How did the idea first come to you? accomplish that. We’ve had many offers through the years to do something like this, so we’ve been working on an idea for a Broadwaytype show for over 10 years. You can’t do it on your entire life. We’ve been able to synthesize what part of our story would make a great Broadway show. It’s really on the fast track, and we hope to be done with the book by January. It’s being written by Alex Dinelaris, who just did The Bodyguard in London. He wrote that and he really gets it. I really loved his approach. We’re incorporating the songs (of mine) with a meaning into the storyline, and of course I’ll do some rewrites, some interesting little turns and some new music as well. I love that, because the creative process for me is my favorite part of everything. Also, we’re very excited about finding a young Gloria and Emilio (Estefan, her husband). Whoever plays me already has their work cut out for her!

Last season, you guest starred as Santana’s mom on Glee. I loved that you were the mother of a lesbian daughter. Me too! I have no qualms about any of that. My son’s already married, but if my daughter were to be gay, to me, it makes no difference. My daughter is the most wonderful human being in the entire world, and all I want her to be is happy and I will love whomever she loves. I wish every parent could say the same. People have a tough time with things they don’t understand. What was your experience on Glee last year?

There’s been talk of Jennifer Lopez playing you. How likely is that?

I loved it and I hope that it happens again. They’ve pretty much gone to a different arc and Naya (Rivera, who plays Santana) has a new girlfriend this season, but I’m a big Ryan Murphy I don’t know where people get all these rumors, quite honfan – and a “gleek” – so I’m really hoping I get back on. It was estly. I don’t think J. Lo would wanna do eight shows a week wonderful. I got to meet Cory (Monteith, who died earlier this on Broadway. I don’t think that’s high on her list of priorities! year from an overdose). Poor thing. He was very sweet and so (Laughs) But yeah, it’s an iconic role and I would love to find talented, and what a shame. It’s just really a shame because somebody new – a breakout. I honestly think there’s a reality it’s a waste. We lost a lot of great people that way. show in the search for them, so we may even do that. It’d be a fun thing to share. After seeing Smash – I used to love that What’s the story behind how The Standards came show and I don’t know why it got canceled – it’d be cool to to be? do something like that. The idea really goes back 25 years when I did “Conga” on The You mention writing new music. So despite doing Johnny Carson Show. I sang “Good Morning Heartache” as the this covers album you just released, The Stansecond tune because they wanted us to do a second song but dards, you must feel like you still have more to say they didn’t want it to be an original because we weren’t that musically? well known. “Conga” was just breaking through. So I sang “Good Morning Heartache” with my piano player. @DavidAtlantaGA // 53

I mean, I have seen a few of them through the years at different places, and at shows, where they would do different phases of me, and I thought, “Oh god, this would be so cool.” Then I took a couple of them on the road with me. And they would fool people! People would think it was me! (Laughs) At what moment in your career did you know a lot of gay people loved you? We were looking to do a remix of a song called “Dr. Beat” that we had put on our seventh album, which was our fourth Sony album. Someone told us there was a guy in Puerto Rico that was DJing at a gay club there and that he was doing amazing things with our Spanish hits, because we hadn’t had any English hits yet. So the gay clubs were very much onto our music even before the English stuff came out. We knew they were always cutting-edge and Pablo Flores did many remixes for us over the years, from “Conga” to “Rhythm is Gonna Get You” to, more recently, “Hotel Nacional” and “Wepa.” He’s been huge in our lives. Do you keep gay audiences in mind while making music, then?

I’ve sung this genre since I was a kid. I grew up listening to all this music with my mom at my home, and then when I could play guitar I would play these songs for my dad and my mom. When I started having a career, I thought one day I would love nothing more than to do an album like this.

Yes, totally! We knew we had an avenue to really express ourselves in a whole other genre in the dance market. Now the dance market is really mainstream, but back then people didn’t hear dance remixes unless they were in a club. That was the way it was. It was very much cutting-edge and very much its own genre.

Early last year you made a pit stop at a gay club in How do you put your own spin on songs that have Miami to thank your gay fans and introduce your new single at the time, “Hotel Nacional.” What’s it been covered so often already? like being in a room full of gay Gloria fans? I literally bought six to seven versions that I was doing – the biggest versions of all the songs – because I wanted to make A blast! They’re the best. The gay community has always been first on all my records and they were the ones who sure I wasn’t gonna make choices that weren’t mine. I just gave my dance music a shot to begin with, so they are an went inward and focused on the reasons I had chosen the amazing consumer of music, they’re very savvy and they’re songs and the inspiration for them and just let myself be free. Also, listening to those musicians was a big inspiration. always ahead of the curve. They’re very important to me. And I had a lot of fun there! They took me certain places. It was just about bringing the most me I could to the songs. What does it mean to have an audience that’s You can’t do an interview with Gloria Estefan for been so loyal over the last three decades? gay press without bringing up the video for “EverIt’s wonderful. I’m all about family – and my fans are famlasting Love,” which starred just drag queens. ily. The only reason I actually toured was to cement those (Laughs) Lemme tell you, baby, that was my favorite video relationships. It was grueling for me, but so worthwhile to – because they saved me! I was so, so pregnant, and there be there on the stage so we could share more than just the music, because for that they could stay at home. I’m very was no way I could even put my face in there. It was my idea, actually. I go, “Who does me better than my gays?” appreciative of that (relationship). I don’t take it for granted. 54 // davidatlanta.com

GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Hard work will definitely be rewarded today -- so avoid any temptations to slack off, no matter what your assigned tasks are. See if you can reschedule that social lunch date.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): If you’re concerned about your financial situation, the answer lies in saving more, not earning more. Take a look at your weekly budget, and see where you can perhaps cut a few luxury expenses.

I

do a monthly radio segment of #FavoriteBitch on the Derek and Romaine Show on SiriusXM. Since most of the people who write to me, usually need advice on sex and relationships, I choose a specific topic relating to those areas and then we kiki about it during the live show. These segments have covered everything from furry fandom fuckers to jack-off clubs to cuckholds to waxed asses & straight boy muscle worship. Nothing is off limits when I’m in the studio, hunty! Next week’s radio topic is about the bastards who steal your heart and your motha fuckin’ coins. I believe Sweet Pussy Pauline said it best in her club hit, Wham Bam with the lyrics, “You took my heart. You took my love. You took my body, but when you touched my money, you took too much!” In the spirit of next week’s appearance, I sifted through my mailbag and found some thieves of the heart and everything else in-between! Dear Miss Tiger,

Dear It Looks Like You Ain’t Got The Key To Heart Either, The apartment and the pussy are on lock down. Bitch, what part of ‘that shit is OVAH,’ don’t you understand? Dear Miss Tiger, I borrowed $150 from my boyfriend without asking. I needed to pay my bartender for a a tab I owed. When he found out about it, he was mad but told me to take my time with paying him back. We have since broken up. Its only been six months since I took the money but now he’s acting like some kind of loan shark and demanding that I pay him back right now! Any advice? -Todd Dear You’re The Hot Mess That Ruins It For His Next Boyfriend,

My boyfriend broke up with me while we were having dinner at Red Lobster. That boy stole my heart when we met. I just can’t believe he decided to throw it all away. I was embarrassed and humiliated because so many people were at the restaurant when this happened. What should I do to get over it?

Maybe if you’d lay off that booze you’d have the money and the clarity to know that ‘take your time’ doesn’t mean in light years, bitch. So yeah, I have some advice for you: Drink at home, ration out your Crown Royal whisky and pay that motha fuckah his goddamn coins!

-Shane

Wanna talk to me live about this kind of bullshit and more? Then join me next Monday, November 18th on Derek and Romaine • SiriusXM OutQ 109 at 9pm EST. For more information about my radio appearances, visit RadioBitch.com

Dear I Hope You At Least Had A Chance To Finish The Cheddar Bay Biscuits,

What you really should’ve been embarrassed and humiliated by, was the fact that the cheap son-of-a-bitch took Write me and get the goddamn answers you’ve been your ass to a raggedy Red Lobster in the first place ... looking for! NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger,

Miss Tiger

Advice columnist • SiriusXM radio personality ... and My girlfriend stole my key to her apartment. This went everyone’s FAVORITEBITCH down about three weeks ago. She hasn’t returned my Website FavoriteBitch.com Twitter @MissTiger Advice calls and we haven’t hung out or had sex. Is it over? Or ask@misstiger.com do you think she just needs some space? -Jasmine 74 // davidatlanta.com

“We’re the only A-listers here!” Really?! Go to another bar! We don’t need that here!

If all you can think about when you think gay is Britney, something’s missing.

Well, we were in bed, and you said you were hungry…so I bent over.

Oh hell no! I will not hesitate to kick a pregnant woman in the stomach if she doesn’t shut up!

What do you mean you don’t have any condoms?! You’re lying! 76 // davidatlanta.com

To be classy or not give a fuck? Hm…

Follow up on 10% bisexual: I caught him wiggling his butt to “Vogue” the other day. I’m raising it to 45%. Is there anyone left in this city that my ex hasn’t tricked with while we were together? #icant

Honey, there’s a big difference between forgiving and forgetting. I won’t be making that same mistake twice. If you don’t want to talk about it, why are posting vague statuses about it on Facebook, tagging me on every single one of them? You’re a grown man, and all this childishness is just unnecessary. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
