To Out, or Not to Out?

A

pair of stories over the past few weeks have me thinking about coming out. More specifically: when is it okay for a public figure to come out on their own terms, versus being forced out?

The first story concerns Robin Roberts, the anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America. Although her sexuality’s been an open secret for years, she didn’t publicly acknowledge it until just before New Years, when she thanked her “long time girlfriend, Amber” in a Facebook post. The second concerns Rep. Aaron Schock of Illinois. The second-term Congressman has been the subject of gay rumors since winning election to the House, thanks to his good looks and particular fashion tastes. Journalist Itay Hod has created some of the strongest rumors in the past few weeks, though, with a Facebook post about an unnamed Congressman caught in a shower with another man by one journalist, and by TMZ at various gay bars. The post concludes with a link to AMERICAblog’s article, “The 7 gayest Aaron Schock Instagram posts of 2013.” If Schock’s gay, though, he’s doing whatever he can to hide it through his voting record. The HRC assigned Schock a score of “0%” on gay rights issues. He’s opposed the repeals of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and DOMA. He supports the Federal Marriage Amendment, and opposes adding sexual orientation to hate crimes laws.

One comment I’ve seen mentioned concerns the documenting of her life as she fought breast cancer a few years ago – while family and friends were included in the footage, Amber was conspicuously absent. Roberts hasn’t explained it yet, but I have a theory: as much as coming out shouldn’t be a huge deal, it is. Having to deal with coming out as a public figure while fighting cancer is probably too much for anyone to bear. On top of that, coming out would likely overshadow Roberts’ work on breast cancer awareness, and it’s understandable why Roberts wants to focus on the latter. Schock’s case, meanwhile, is very different. His status as a public figure, in combination with his voting record, makes his work against the LGBT community harmful. I don’t believe that we should automatically assume that someone who’s virulently homophobic is also gay, but if there’s evidence that he’s a hypocrite, he should be called out. More specifically, if there’s concrete proof that journalists have that Schock is gay, it should be brought to the public’s attention.

In both of these cases, there are (or were) rumors about a That being said, if we’re just going off of public figure’s sexual orientation. Do both have a right to rumors we can’t verify and stereotypes come out on their own terms, or on someone else’s? regarding certain behaviors, we should reevaluate going after Schock and others What it comes down to, in my opinion, is the nature of their like him. There’s certainly ample room public status. In Roberts’ case, while she is a public figure, to argue against his voting record withand her coming out has the potential for changing someone’s out suggesting he’s a self-hating gay, if mind about our community, she’s also entitled to some pri- there’s no legitimate proof that it’s true. vacy in her life. Deciding not to come out publicly may not help us, but in Roberts’ case, it also doesn’t actively hurt the larger LGBT community.

W

hether he’s slinging tacos or liquor your way, this handsome little bartender at Woofs is ready to make you his new friend! Atlanta, meet Garrett!

What’s your favorite drink to make, and what’s in it?

Honestly I think my favorite drink to make is a margarita because I make it the way I like it. A lot of places pour margaritas way too sweet. I try to find a good balance. Which really means, just a splash of sour. So my margarita is a solid helping of tequila, triple sec, a shot of grand ma, splash of roses lime, splash of sour mix, and a fresh squeezed lemon and lime on top with a salt rim. Can you guess what people are drinking before they even order it? Working at F.R.O.G.S. we had a lot of regulars, so for them I pretty much always knew what they would have to drink. There is also a large patron group at Woofs, and I am learning people’s drinks, slowly. For me, it’s easier to remember someone by a drink order and face than a name. Why should they come see you at Woofs? I guess I don’t have any specific reasons for you to come see me. I am a good bartender, that does my job with a smile on my face, and thoroughly enjoy human interaction. So come introduce yourself and talk with me about all your cheeky shenanigans! 10 // 01.15.2014

Deep Inside Hollywood Michelle Rodriguez: 10% and 1% “Eventually it’s going to wrinkle up and I’m not going to be able to use it. I wanted to be honest about who I am and see what happens,” said Michelle Rodriguez several weeks ago when, after years of speculation, she addressed her bisexuality in her trademark blunt, funny style. Not that it was much of a secret, mind you, but it’s nice to finally have her quote-ready one-liners put to good queer use. And sadly, with the death of Paul Walker, Rodriguez’s appearance in Fast and Furious 7 won’t see theaters until 2015 (after a planned summer 2014 release). So in the meantime, a smaller project will have to do for her fans. She’ll appear in the indie 1%ers, written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Francesca de Sola (Rodriguez connection: She worked in the art department of Resident Evil: Retribution). Rodriguez will play a famous movie star looking to relax away from the spotlight by hitting an out-of-the-way dive bar with a friend (Danish actress Rie Rasmussen, Femme Fatale). And then things go wrong. Knowing and loving the typecast badass Rodriguez, we’ll just assume she regulates the situation when necessary. Could this be the Lady Road House we’ve longed for all this time? Sundance, bloody Sundance The LGBT offerings at this year’s upcoming Sundance Film Festival involve some freshly acclaimed names as well as some old-school indie vets (and one iconic pop culture personality). Ira Sachs, indie darling of the moment after his critically adored feature Keep the Lights On, returns with a new feature, Love is Strange, starring John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as a gay couple together for 39 years who must 12 // 01.15.2014

suddenly live apart. Meanwhile, Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin) has a new one, too: White Bird in a Blizzard, starring Shailene Woodley, Eva Green and Gabourey Sidibe, and based on the novel by Laura Kasischke. But it’s To Be Takei that looks like it’ll be the fest’s biggest crowd-pleaser. It’s a documentary about Star Trek’s funniest, most outspoken gay alumnus, George Takei, as he and his husband assume the role of activist around the country. And if you follow him on Twitter you already know that the man can work a crowd. Of course, then there’s the Nick Offerman documentary but, with the exception of the micro-culture of gay male Ron Swanson and/or mustache enthusiasts, it doesn’t really count as a queer offering. Porn, yes. Gay, not so much. Jim Parsons having Visions “In negotiations” means they’re hammering out the money, so when the official casting for the horror movie Visions makes the news, you’ll know that they met Jim Parsons’ (The Big Bang Theory) quote. Oh, yes, and “quote” means the minimum amount of money an actor will accept to appear in a film, Super Bowl ad, music video or dictator’s birthday party. Anyway, Visions, from director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D), concerns a pregnant woman experiencing horrific visions. That’s as much of a plot synopsis as is available for now, but it’s probably an easy guess that those visions aren’t just due to an overactive imagination. Isla Fisher is in negotiations to play the Rosemary in this Polanski-like thriller, and it can be assumed that Parsons would play her husband and, if the talks go well, that sassy Ellen Barkin will come aboard, too, perhaps as something demonic, which would be cool.

Toni Braxton Talks Retirement, Going Lesbian and the Hit Song She Hates

Toni Braxton is getting deep. Real deep.

Rap is Gay photos: FX

Comedian and Creator Talk ‘Dirty’ New Cartoon, Its Star (A Gay Rapper, What?) and Homophobia in Hip-Hop

H

e’s here, he’s queer…and he raps? It’s almost an oxymoron, or at least it used to be. But then there was Frank Ocean, the hip-hop queer who came out in 2012, and Macklemore, the emcee whose pro-gay “Same Love” made a splash on urban radio last year.

By Chris Azzopardi

In personifying the character, a creation that just came to Dekernion randomly one day, there was one fundamental goal: Do something that had never been done. “I chose his sexuality, which is obviously a huge part of him but not all of him,” he says, “and I also had the story where he’s been on hard times, he’s coming out of jail and he’s not necessarily a bad guy. It’s this whole idea of a man trying to re-enter society.” Voicing the titular emcee is Bobby Moynihan, the longtime Saturday Night Live comic who, as a regular on the show, is familiar with doing gay things – most of it involving drag.

The next step? Obviously a cartoon all about a gay rapper. Chozen, the brainchild of Grant Dekernion, is the first of its “They love putting me in dresses,” Moynihan laughs. “That’s kind – an FX original series starring an unapologetically queer their favorite thing to do. I didn’t mind it at first. But now – it’s just ex-con who slays with his wicked rhymes. And you know, he stockings are hard to put on, and I’m lazy.” just happens to like the penis. It’s pretty gay. But how gay? For his part as Chozen, the comedian jumped at the chance to “Oh gosh, I guess I don’t know what the parameters are for audition, and not just because this is probably a once-in-a-lifethat,” laughs Dekernion. “You know what, I can tell you this: time opportunity (there’s not exactly a demand for gay rapper Chozen is a super confident, super open type of guy. He’s a roles – or fake cartoon ones, at that). What had Moynihan most pretty sexual guy. I see Chozen as a 15-year-old boy in that he pumped was working with Method Man. (The show also features doesn’t have a filter and he has some basic needs – money, the voices of Michael Peña, Danny McBride and Nick Swardson, food, sex – and he’s very open about that.” the Reno 911! actor whose entire career has been one gay thing after another.)

22 // 01.15.2014

Moynihan compares the show to the edgy Eastbound & Down, also starring McBride, and says, “(Chozen) is gay in the show and he’s very aggressive and he does enjoy the company of men, and there are scenes with that, but it’s not just the gay, white rapper show.”

“If something good did come out of it, that would be great. I think we’d all love that,” Dekernion says. “But I didn’t create the character or pick hip-hop or anything with the thought that, ‘Hey, this is gonna make a change.’ I think those things happen organically anyway – hopefully. But I work with people in the hip-hop community and they haven’t always been warm and And GLAAD, don’t worry: Chozen isn’t here to represent all fuzzy, but I’m hoping that will change. There have been some the gays. “Chozen is one character – he’s one person – and steps made for it, but obviously we still have a long way to go.” he has traits that are unique to him, so I feel like he speaks for himself and the show speaks for him and he doesn’t speak One need only look to Eminem’s latest album to see that hofor any community as a whole,” Dekernion says. “He’s an out- mophobia in hip-hop isn’t just a thing of the past. What would there, brash guy and he behaves in that way. What you see is Chozen tell Eminem about his gay slurs if he were to confront what you get.” him? Moynihan isn’t sure he’d be able to face him…and only because the comedian himself couldn’t when the rapper was What you get, according to Moynihan, is one heckuva dirty right there in front of him on SNL. gay time. For instance, Chozen demonstrates how to play a butthole like a saxophone – and that, seen in the trailer, just “I just said ‘hi,’” he recalls, “and then ran away.” scratches the surface. “We go as far as we can,” Dekernion affirms. No full cartoon nudity, though. You will, however, Bobby Moynihan “see him (Chozen) in various stages of undress.” When he’s not making beautiful sounds out of a sphincter, Chozen is bonding with friends and having not-just-sexual relationships with other gay men. “It’s not political, it’s not about identity politics,” Dekernion says. “It’s, ‘How does this man relate to people? How did he go through his life? How did he experience things?’ These are all common themes that affect everyone, gay or straight.” Dekernion calls Chozen an “anomaly”; he doesn’t fit into any box, and he wasn’t directly inspired by any real-life rappers (and actually, Dekernion is the one spitting Chozen’s hot fire). But that doesn’t mean some of Dekernion’s own personal musical picks – like queer rapper/metropolitan virtuoso Mykki Blanco – didn’t rub off on Chozen. “Mykki Blanco is great visually and he does cool stuff, and his clothes are interesting,” Dekernion says. “I am definitely hip to a lot of different people in rap, both from the straight and gay scenes, and I think there’s some really cool stuff going on.” Could Chozen and the show inspire more of the same pro-gay progress Macklemore and Frank Ocean have already brought to hip-hop?

really look at them as “gay,” or whatever. I just looked at them as people. And that’s all I want in my career: variety. I want the opportunity to play different kinds of people. DA: Did you relate in any way to Tanner’s story in the film?

More Than a Label: Michael J. Willett Talks ‘G.B.F.’ By Elijah Sarkesian

What’s the hottest item for a popular teenage girl? In the film G.B.F., it’s a gay best friend. In the vein of Mean Girls, G.B.F. tells one teen’s story as he becomes a prize for his school’s most popular girls. G.B.F. comes from director Darren Stein (Jawbreaker) and first-time screenwriter George Northy, and cast members include Megan Mullally, Natasha Lyonne and Horatio Sanz. At the center of the film is Tanner, played by Michael J. Willett, best known for his role as Lionel on United States of Tara. Anyone familiar with Lionel shouldn’t expect a repeat of that character here, though. I spoke with Willett about the film, playing characters who happen to be gay instead of gay characters, and the film’s controversial rating. David Atlanta: How did you get involved with G.B.F.? Michael J. Willett: Well, George Northy saw me on United States of Tara as 26 // 01.15.2014

Lionel, and as much as my character was different on United States of Tara, he thought that I could potentially play the role of Tanner in his script. They asked me to do several readings of it with Darren Stein, and after reading it and really living in the character, I just felt like I had to play this role. Tanner was almost a friend that I knew in high school. He was very close to me. I ended up really fighting for the role. I’d been approached with lots of different scripts, and I turned a lot of them down for different reasons. But this one, I felt like it was so good, because it was funny and it just seemed more real than a lot of scripts I had read. It was perfect. DA: As you mentioned, you’re known for your role on United States of Tara. Did you have any concerns about playing another gay character? MJW: I had no apprehensions about it. Like I said, I’ve been approached with scripts for other roles, specifically gay roles, and I didn’t like either the way the character was represented, or I didn’t feel like the storyline was important. But Tanner was different. He’s just a kid, and he doesn’t have a problem with his sexuality. It’s everyone else who’s making it an issue. And Lionel was very different, because Lionel was much more confident. They’re just very different. I didn’t

MJW: Tanner is a lot like me in high school. I was much more introverted. I was a creative person who didn’t really know who the popular kids were. In my own head, I was popular. But no, I wasn’t exactly like Tanner’s story. There are parts of it that I relate to, like his relationships with the girls and stuff, but not really. I never had a fashion makeover montage. That’s why it’s awesome to have it in the film, because everyone wants that secretly. (Laughs) But I think there are elements to the story that are totally real and real to life. DA: The film’s rating generated some controversy. Were you surprised at all by the rating? MJW: Oh, I was totally surprised, because we never intended for the film to be rated R. We made a teen comedy. So if anything, I was disheartened to hear it was rated R, because that’s not what we intended to do. It’s not sought out to do. And I don’t think in the long run, it’ll do any damage, but it’s for kids. It’s for this new generation of young people. DA: What’s next for you, careerwise? MJW: I’m currently working on a new MTV series called Faking It. It’s a teen romantic comedy about two girls who are trying to be popular at a school where the more different you are, the cooler you are. So they get outed as lesbians, but they’re not – they’re just faking it. I play a hot, popular kid who happens to be gay, and I run the school, telling people what’s cool and what causes they should be fighting for and supporting. But it should be an interesting show that’s not stereotypical in the least. G.B.F. opens Jan. 17 at the Plaza Theatre. It’s rated R for sexual references. August: Osage County

By Elijah Sarkesian

Of the other cast members, three turn in performances that are worth mention. Margo Martindale and Chris Cooper play Violet’s sister Mattie Fae and her husband Charlie, respectively, and while they provide a lot of comic relief, each is able to switch instantly to some dramatic moments. Julianne Nicholson, meanwhile, delivers the most heartbreaking performance here. As the daughter still trapped in her mother’s world, there’s a faint glimmer of hope for an escape she displays that’s decimated by the film’s end.

Thanks to a sharp script and powerful performances by Streep and Roberts, August: Osage County delivers a brutal look at family dysfunction.

S

ometimes in life, the greatest blows we take come from those who are supposed to be the closest to us. In a nutshell, that’s what Tracy Letts explored in his Tony- and Pulitzer-winning play, August: Osage County, now adapted by the author from a three-hour play into a two-hour film.

The Weston family is a dark one. Patriarch Beverly is a drunk, and his wife, Violet, pops pills like they’re candy. Eldest daughter Barbara is separated from her husband, middle child Ivy is involved in an inappropriate relationship, and youngest daughter Karen runs from man to man across the country. When they’re brought together following Beverly’s disappearance, barely-covered tensions quickly turn this unplanned family reunion into a verbal - and occasionally physical - war zone.

If there’s one part of the film I have a small issue with, it’s the direction. Director John Wells makes a lot of obvious, safe choices here. He’s content to let the script and the actors do the heavy lifting. Now, when your script and cast are this strong, it’s easier to forgive, but I do have to wonder what a stronger director would’ve brought to the film.

That’s a minor nitpick, though. Thanks to Letts’ work and a set of strong performances, August: Osage County delivers a August: Osage County is a verbally-driven film, and its success sharp, brutal look into the damage that can be created in a or failure depends on the cast assembled. The film’s greatest family. Highly recommended. strength is in how many parts of the large ensemble work. The two biggest names, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, get August: Osage County is now playing in the juiciest roles as Violet and Barbara, respectively. Streep theaters. The film is rated R for language, is Streep, so she’s excellent as expected, but Roberts manincluding sexual references, and for drug ages to actually top Streep’s performance. Roberts sheds her material. movie-star persona and turns in her darkest performance since Closer a decade ago.

Goodbye, Mr. Chips solution

54 // 01.15.2014

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

Your enthusiasm for a new day will last only as long as your morning caffeine buzz. Better do something to get your energy levels up. A lunchtime workout could be the fix. Exercising will have you sweating bullets, while the eye candy will get your blood boiling.

A gathering heat in your head may be causing storm clouds to hover above. Your irritability will be intimidating to people, and the constant lightning strikes to your head will eventually need some moisturizing. Best lighten up before the rains start. A bad hair day won’t make you feel any better.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

The frenetic pace of hyper people won’t be to your liking today. You’ll prefer a slow ramp-up to a blastoff. So let them zoom right by you. They’ll crash by lunchtime while you plod right past them, getting things done.

Perhaps the clothes felt a little tight this past weekend. Maybe you were feeling less than sexy. Take your bruised ego back to the gym for some retooling. Be consistent and eat sensibly and your return to splendor and a 30-inch waist should only take a couple of weeks.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

Your moods will be fiery today, and the slightest spark could make them go kaboom. But setting off fireworks also puts you at the center of attention, never good when you’re in the middle of a hissy fit. That’s a display no one will be cheering, so put a lid on the drama today.

You’ll project a masculine energy today that will have all eyes on you. You may not even be aware of the effect you’ll have on guys, as even the non-smokers rush out to buy Marlboros. But stay humble and slightly naive today. A slight hint of innocence will drive them even crazier!

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

Opening your big yapper could land you in a hot water today. So formulate sentences in your head and analyze them before delivery. It may take you longer to say things, but that will be best for everyone today, yourself included.

Postpone any social engagements you may have today. A rough day at work will dampen your enthusiasm for being outgoing and bon vivant. And no one wants to be around a sullen recluse who speaks in grunts. So delay going out until later in the week when you’ll feel the love.

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

Be your own man today, and don’t let anyone shape your opinions. Stick to your guns, as people will be persuasive. But you’ll still buy a ticket for the Rufus Wainright show because it’s expected of you, and because you never get enough of a guy singing the Judy Garland songbook.

You may discover a dirty little secret about someone you don’t like today. Spreading this news discreetly through the general population will give you the upper hand in your tenuous relationship with this person. But take the high road and keep it to yourself, no matter how tempting it may be.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

Be willing to do what’s necessary to climb that ladder today. That may mean being cruel and bitchy, although people may not notice a difference. Be hard-boiled, but don’t surrender to the dark side. Resorting to dirty tricks and subversive actions is too low to stoop in the name of ambition.

You’ll feel as if you’re lost in a haze today. That won’t be a good place to be as the day swings into high gear. Better drink plenty of coffee to get you up to speed. But even that may not help, so you had best learn to fake it and hope no one notices.

Ever look at someone and just know they’re bad in bed?

Whose dick do I have to suck to get a dick to suck?

I don’t follow people on Instagram who have a private profile. I feel like they’re trying to trick me into thinking they have good pictures.

I’m not prejudiced. I’ll meet the black guy that was turned down by Lonely Boy. I don’t get the phrase “a practicing homosexual.” Is it a sport? If so, I’m an expert and I’m going to win a glittery medal for America. 60 // 01.15.2014

Making assumptions about someone because of how they look isn’t cute, isn’t witty and it doesn’t say anything good about your character.

When asked if I was in a frat, I said, “Oh no. I’m not that gay.”

It’s so cold outside I can’t even take my hand out of my glove to take a “BRRR” selfie.

Most of my life is smiling and nodding. Not because I don’t understand, but because I don’t want to put effort into talking.

Homosexuality is a gateway sin? Right, after kissing a guy, my next thought is, “I feel like killing a baby and looting the family.” Every time. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
