‘Looking’ – Where Normal is Refreshing
W
hen HBO’s new series Looking premiered, the majority of the reactions I read to the pilot – whether positive or negative – came back to the fact that the characters were all pretty normal. Well, “normal” was used in the more positive reviews. “Boring” was the most frequent negative version of the term I read. I can understand where both sides come from on this series. Looking may air on HBO, but this isn’t an update on Queer as Folk. While sex is an important component on the show, as evidenced by the opening cruising scene, threesomes, joint bachelor parties, etc., sex is treated in a way that’s more intimate than titillating. While others may (okay, will) disagree, I think it’s refreshing to have gay men and relationships treated as normal on a consistent basis. We’ve gone through years of stereotypes in how gays are portrayed on television: frequently flamboyant, typically fashion-forward, and either single-mindedly focused on sex or completely neutered. And while there’s been growth in recent years – Happy Endings’ Max comes to mind – there are still plenty of gay characters I can’t stand watching on a regular basis. Case in point: while I applaud Modern Family’s inclusion of a gay couple, it frustrates me that Mitchell and Cam are frequently the couple most likely to be openly nasty toward each other, and the least likely to be romantic.
Now, do I think there’s room for a more diverse representation of the broader LGBT community on television? Of course. If anything, I welcome seeing different types of characters on television, since it helps break down this false idea that we are all just one type of person. As our community becomes more accepted by the larger society, some members are concerned we’ll begin to lose our gay identity. It’s a valid concern, and one we should watch carefully.
Still, I don’t think that’s an issue when it comes to Looking. If anything, Looking is more representative of parts of our community – for better and worse – than a lot of television shows in the past. That doesn’t make Looking a perfect show, by the way. But it does make looking Which brings me back to Looking. Maybe having a show normal a refreshing quality. where all of the leads, and the majority of the characters overall, are gay helps, but the show picks up on things that are unique to our community, like the aforementioned openness of sexual behavior, and uses them as parts of life in a matterof-fact way. Simple, done, the end. If you watch Looking and find it boring, that’s fine. But for me, seeing parts of culture I can recognize in some way is comforting.

Deep Inside Hollywood
Hee Haw! Bringing the Opry to Broadway If Green Day can go Broadway then the same thing can happen for old-fashioned country music, right? That’s the reasoning behind the move to bring TV’s one and only vintage country variety show, Hee Haw, to the stage. Steve Buchanan, head of Opry Entertainment Group, is developing Hee Haw: The Musical for arrival on Broadway in spring of 2015. A recent script reading (written by 13 co-creator Robert Horn) impressed a roomful of producers, and Nashville hitmakers Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark are already cranking out songs for the show. Instead of mimicking the TV show’s variety format, the story involves a young woman from Kornfield Kounty determined to see the world before she settles down with her boyfriend. Of course, word is that characters from the show, beloved folks like Lulu Roman, Grandpa Jones and Junior Samples, are a part of the action, which leads us to believe that those people all live somewhere along the Seine until discovered by our heroine. Or maybe not. Whatever tweaks are made to the program’s contributions to popular country culture, you can bet that tourists from the South (and, well, everywhere else, too) are going to eat it up like a bowl of buttered grits. Last question: Will Harvey Fierstein play Lulu or Minnie Pearl? SAHHHH-LOOT! Mo’Nique finally picks a new movie to be in Academy Award winners and career heat: they go together like peanut butter and jelly. Unless you’re Mo’Nique, of course. Then you hang back and chill until something you really want to do comes along. It took awhile but she’ll make her next bigscreen appearance in the new indie from gay filmmaker Patrik Ian Polk (Noah’s Arc) titled Blackbird. She’ll co-star alongside Isaiah Washington and executive produce the film, which is based on Larry Duplechan’s novel about a black teenage boy (newcomer Julian Walker) coming out as gay in the South and dealing with divorcing parents and a sister who disappears. Due for a 2014 release after finishing production in Mississippi, look for this one to find its way to an arthouse (or VOD platform) near you sooner rather than later. 12 // 01.29.2014

Richard Pryor: from one gay director to another? Remember that Richard Pryor movie that was supposed to happen with Eddie Murphy and director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, The Fifth Estate)? It’s not happening anymore. That’s Hollywood. Oh, wait, now it might be happening again, just not with either of those guys. Now talks with Lee Daniels (The Butler) have begun and, while Murphy is still being considered for the role, so are younger actors like Marlon Wayans and Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station). Though Pryor died in his 60s, the biopic will cover the groundbreaking comic during his 30s, which would make a Wayans or Jordan choice more appropriate. And no matter what happens, don’t hold your breath for this one. It’ll probably happen eventually. But just look at how long it took The Normal Heart to get anywhere. And it still hasn’t aired. OK, yes, it’s slated for May on HBO. But you get it. For the Bible tells me so The Ten Commandments, who doesn’t love those tips for living? All that shalt not murdering and avoiding covetousness and quitting doing it with your neighbor’s wife – they’re very popular. And now they’re going to be a miniseries from The Weinstein Company on WGN America. The 10-part scripted series will employ a variety of filmmakers to tackle each golden rule, people like Michael Cera, Jim Sheridan (Dream House) and Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street). Acclaimed gay directors Lee Daniels (The Butler) and Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho) are also on board, putting their own contemporary (and maybe queer?) spin on the material. There’s no casting news yet but it could turn into a major ensemble event if everything comes together. One problem, though: If they include the one about graven images, doesn’t that make turning it into a film sort of automatically sinful? Oh well, can’t win them all, can you?

Kryean Kally: A Legend in the Making

ou may, or may not, know the name now, but trust me, in a few years, you will. The winner of the most recent cycle of the hit drag competition Dragnificent, started off as an “East Atlanta Village Queen” but is ready to take Atlanta by storm! I caught Kryean Kally in a brief moment of downtime, while she was busy planning her 2014 schedule. We got to chat a little about her roots, the competition, and that damned Reba.
DA: Princess Charles, who was the host of Dragnificent Cycle 2, liked to call you “Miss East Atlanta Village” during the course of the competition. How would you describe yourself?
David Atlanta: Congrats on winning Cycle 2 of Dragnificent! How does it feel to be part of a group of distinguished queens like Edie Cheezburger, Evah Destruction, Rapture Divine Cox and Janelle Brooks who have previously won these competitions?
KK: Whenever I think of Kryean, I think of someone who is eager and someone who wants to inspire people through artwork. And someone who wants to learn the craft of drag, and just do it right. In the beginning, I started off in East Atlanta and I could do whatever I wanted to and it was MY drag, ya know? I didn’t look the best, aesthetically, but it was mine. I did a lot of performance art, and I saw other people in the city looking polished. So, I kinda became envious of them and I wanted to reach a broader
Kryean Kally: It’s very inspiring because the people who have been in this competition, they have all sort of been newcomers when they start. And when it ends, they’ve bumped up their career by being a part of the competition. So, I am inspired to do more and take what I get from whatever comes next! I don’t really know what to feel, honestly, about what to come. Because I have no clue to be honest! (Laughs) I’m just taking the gigs that come at me and doing the best I can with them, and hopefully one day, I can be as legendary as those people. 14 // 01.29.2014
audience as well, with my performances. So, I started studying drag, so then I could say that I could do it all, but then I could go back to being more artistic. I learned so much from studying, for example, how to cover my brows and that kind of stuff. And I’m so glad that I ventured out and looked at other drag in the city. I do believe that I am an “East Atlanta Queen” cause that’s where I’m from, but the goal for me is to be an Atlanta icon. DA: Why did you decide do this cycle of Dragnificent? KK: I decided that I needed to jump into something more effective whenever it came to professionalism in drag. I definitely think that by winning a title, you can be respected. Because then people know you have worked hard to gain that title. And they can look at you, in the hiring perspective, and know that you are trust worthy and professional, as well as give a good performance. Whereas, if you didn’t have a title, if they didn’t know you personally, they wouldn’t know how to analyze you and figure out how you fit in professionally. So I really think that was a big push for me; I’ve been doing drag for about a year. But every opportunity I’ve been given, from the beginning of my career, I’ve taken them and smashed them up, ya know? I knew that every person who had entered Dragnificent, or Dragnique, has come out a better performer because they’ve taken the knowledge they’ve acquired in this eight-week crash course of drag and they’ve been able to make it work for them as performers and characters.
DA: You were the fan favorite from pretty much the beginning of the competition. How did that affect your run? Did that add extra pressure? KK: It definitely added pressure, because you set the bar high for yourself and people expect you to meet that bar, or even jump over it. So by setting the bar high and by being the best I can be in the beginning, it pushed me to be even better, but it also worried me a bit, ya know? I would get a theme and I would wonder, “How can I make this more epic?” So, it was a blessing, too, ‘cause it also gave me more of a push and it made me really happy to see everyone on my side and it encouraged me and made me feel like I was doing something right. DA: There was a week where you had the opportunity to bring back an eliminated contestant and you brought back Marcella Grrleen Redd. Why? KK: I definitely think Marcella is a very talented queen. I had a list of people on that board, but I wasn’t about to not allow someone to come back, ya know? And I just feel that if I didn’t pick someone, it would have just been the easy choice. I see Marcella as one of my top competitors and had I not brought her back, it would have been the typical thing to do; to make it easier on myself. It kept me motivated because I knew that I had stiff competition and it pushed me to do better. Dragnificent was such a great crash course, as I said earlier, and I wanted to give someone that same opportunity. And I just feel that if I was in the bottom, I’d want someone to allow me a second chance, too! (Laughs) I wish I could have brought back everybody!
A competition like Dragnificent was necessary for me in my career, and I was looking for that. And I was gonna smash it up whether I was 2 months old or 2 years old in drag, ya know? I was still gonna bust my ass with this competition. It’s really ignorant to pass up something that gives you so much more knowledge about your craft. That’s the point of these competi- DA: If you had to lose the competition to one of tions, to grow. your competitors, who would it be and why? DA: Did you have a challenge that, when you heard KK: If I had to lose to any of them, I would definitely say about it, you instantly were worried about? Jai’Ne Van Michaels, because she is super talented; I see so much ahead for her. I admire someone who thinks outKK: I was instantly worried about the production number. It’s side the box, and she does! I performed with her at GLITZ hard as hell to manage yourself sometimes, and then add on at Mary’s and she’s always had it pulled together and she having to manage 4 other people? That’s a lot! It was kind of a always looks professional. She makes me want to watch worry of mine. I just wanted everyone to be on time and be open more performances of hers. So, I would definitely say ears and be flexible, but it’s difficult to find people like that. Jai’Ne. Luckily for me, it turned out really amazing; I was very proud of everyone who helped me with the production number. I was DA: What’s next for Kryean Kally? scared, but everyone was there behind me and pushing me and encouraging me and inspiring me to do better. KK: I am currently looking to find some musicians to work with and do a little music for the peoples and, before 2014 DA: Was there a challenge you wish you could redo? ends, I want to have at least one original song and an accompanying music video. Look What’s Cookin’ at
Burkhart’s
B
By Elijah Sarkesian
urkhart’s is one of Atlanta’s most popular gay bars, and with good reason. The crowds are diverse, there’s plenty of different areas to hang out within the bar, and the drag shows include some of Atlanta’s biggest names. But there’s one area that’s occasionally overlooked: the menu. And we’re not talking about a drink menu.
Indeed, Burkhart’s offers more than drinks to customers on a daily basis. The bar also serves a full menu of food, from starters and salads to sandwiches and entrées. Sandwiches are served with french fries or tater tots, while entrées are served with two sides – one of several potato-based sides plus one of the bar’s vegetables of the day. The best part of the menu, though, may very well be the prices. Without skimping on quality, the prices are some of the most inexpensive you’ll find around town. For my fellow carnivores out there, I have to recommend the ribeye steak. It’s one of the more expensive steaks on the menu, but well worth the price. The steak is cooked to order, and what came out was a deliciously juicy, large cut of meat. And the sides…oh, my. My dish was served with loaded mashed potatoes, and “loaded” is right – they’re filled with butter, sour cream, bacon and cheese. I also tried a newer side called pizza zucchini, which takes chargrilled zucchini and tops it with, among other ingredients, marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni. The “pizza” elements created a nice contrast to the steak and potatoes, and the zucchini was nice and fresh.
Filet Mignon A chargrilled 8 oz USDA choice Angus steak. Served with loaded mashed potatoes (flavored with sour cream, butter, bacon bits and cheddar cheese) and piccata zucchini (chargrilled zucchini with caramelized onions, flavored with garlic capers and white wine).
Chicken Piccata Three chicken tender medallions, sautéed in a mix of extra virgin olive oil and butter, and flavored with garlic, capers and white wine. Served with a baked potato and creamed spinach.
So the next time you’re in the mood for a good steak, give Burkhart’s a shot. The food is excellent, and at prices you simply can’t ignore. Burkhart’s, located at 1492-F Piedmont Rd., is open for dining Monday–Saturday from 4:30–11 p.m., and Sunday from 2–11 p.m. For more information, including a full menu, visit burkharts.com. 24 // 01.29.2014
Gorgonzola-Bacon Steakburger A half-pound of choice cuts of ribeye and New York strip steak, ground in-house, topped with bacon and gorgonzola and served with lettuce, tomato, red onion and a Kosher dill pickle spear. Served with french fries.

Mary Lambert: Welcome to the Age of My Body The “Same Love” singer delivers on her new EP. If you’re into poetry and really deep, meaningful lyrics, check out this project.
By Dylan Michael
And it’s that type of sweetness that makes this track a must listen.
The third track, “Sarasvati” is the darkest track on the project, but Mary has said that she hopes it “sparks people’s ability to be vulnerable and say, ‘Yeah there have been times he’s most known for her feature on the widely where I’ve thought about killing myself, too. Maybe I can talk popular Macklemore song “Same Love”, in which about it.’” Super dark, super beautiful. she sings about a lesbian relationship. It’s very emotional charged, and she encourages women to be more than “who they fuck, or what they wear”. Overall, Mary’s EP is solid. Apart from “She Keeps Me Warm”, I don’t see her having much success on the radio, or selling The second track on the EP is the standout track. It is an out huge arenas. fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
You won’t take no for an answer, and your charming personality always has people saying yes. You usually get what you want, but are you using people for your own gain? Curb the selfishness today, and give back. As hard as it is to believe, it’s not all about you.
Today will be a great day to get out of the house or office, and breathe in the fresh air. Being in stagnant environments can have an oppressive effect on your mind and soul. So go for a brisk walk, or open the windows as you go on a long drive. You’ll be amazed how your energies will be revived when you let a little cool, clean water flow into that brackish pool.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
We’re living in a material world, and today you are a material girl. Your many possessions give you a strong sense of security -- add to them today by buying classy, tasteful things for the home. Persian rugs and Ming vases may be out of your price range, and you don’t have to travel to Bali for that bamboo room divider. Unearth treasures in you own backyard.
You’ve been pursuing that guy for some time now, and he’s proving to be quite elusive. Normally, you love the challenge of the chase, but your patience is wearing thin. Asking yourself the tough questions today may give you a new realization, and open you to some cold truths. Maybe he’s just not that into you.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
Everything, and everybody, has two faces today and you’re not sure which one is real. There are shadows lurking behind every corner, so be careful with the people you deal with today. Think clearly and be sure of yourself. Don’t add to the confusion by wearing a mask of your own.
Your two key words for today should be fun and laughter. And nothing’s more fun than laughing. So take in a comedy club, watch your favorite episode of The Simpsons or read the latest book from David Sedaris. Best yet, learn to laugh at yourself. As a wise writer once said, he who laughs, lasts.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
Starting new projects may prove to be a challenge today. Your first reaction may be to retreat, but that would be giving up, something that goes against your nature. Instead, find a like-minded pal who supports your views and ideas and tag-team your adversaries. Brilliant minds often think alike and together, the two of you can get the job done.
You’ve been so focused on work lately that you’ve been ignoring the friends who’ve been trying to reach you. Your dedication to your job is admirable, but you know what they say about all work and no play. Screw the overtime and reconnect with friends instead today. Having fun in your social life will rejuvenate your work life.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
You’ve met someone who is kind and supportive, and who enjoys being in the company of your larger-than-life personality. Your friends agree that you two seem made for each other, so what are you waiting for? So ask him out on a date. Take it slow, but let him know how you feel about him. He will love seeing the gentle side of the mighty lion.
That new guy in your building seems like a loner, not the type of person an ebullient guy like you would associate with. Still, there’s something fascinating about him. You will have to break the ice. There are many ways to do that, and some don’t involve stalking. Just knock on his door, and welcome him to the neighborhood. He may surprise you by inviting you in.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
You’ve been hanging with the beautiful people lately, and you’re on the A-list for all the big social events. You love being part of the glitterati, but even you have to admit there’s something shallow about that scene. Your old friends have been wondering where you’ve been. Go back to them today. They’ll have a way of reminding you of who you really are.
A down-on-his-luck friend may owe you sum of money you know he can’t pay back. You could find ways for him to repay you short of making him your personal manservant. Still, this is putting a strain on your friendship. Be a humanitarian today, and absolve him of his debt. Never make money more important than the people in your life.

elieve it or not, yours truly has never been in jail nor have I been involved with anyone with a criminal record. I’m not saying that any of my former flames never broke the law, mind you ... they just happened to have been smart enough not to get caught. Now we all love a bad boy and I wouldn’t want to deprive anyone of that pleasure. Hell, I’m still holding out for Boomer Banks, but that’s a whole other story! What I’m saying is, a bitch needs to know when to move on to new trade - I don’t care how good that dick is. And when you find that new bad boy, make sure he doesn’t have frequent flyer miles at the state penitentiary. This week’s Favorite Bitch is all about bad boys gone wrong!
Dear Your Name Might Be Haute Couture But Your Life Is A Hot Mess, At least the motha fuckah told the truth for once in his goddamn life. Had he been more honest about other shit, his ass wouldn’t be gettin’ fucked in the jail house shower right about now ...
Dear Miss Tiger, I asked my boyfriend to rape me but he left me instead! I guess my fetish was too intense. Isn’t it healthy to explore fantasies? -Ron
Dear Miss Tiger, I make seven figures a year. I have a confession - I happen to get off on stealing. It’s fun and the rush is amazing! Is this wrong? -Tim
Don’t concern yourself with what goes on IN jail. Be concerned if the bastard is still craving dick once he get’s OUT of jail! NEXT!
Dear Miss Tiger, After so many boring nights of sex, I want to be fucked rough and dirty. I’ve been looking for a Latino ex-con to do the deed. Dear Miss Tiger, I haven’t found one. Any advice? I have a problem. My boyfriend is constantly in and out of jail. -Nice White Boy in Manhattan It has taken a toll on our gay relationship. Why can’t he just stay out of jail? Dear You’ve Been Looking For Love In The -Ryan Wrong Places, Try taking a train that doesn’t stop in your gentrified section of Dear It’s Also Taken A Toll On His Anal Manhattan. Better yet, get on a subway around 3am and get Sphincter, off at any stop in the Bronx. Not only will you get your wish ... I have one thing to say ... NEXT! but you’ll be granted 20 more from 20 other ex-cons. NEXT!
Dear He Knew What The Fuck He Was Doing, I’m all for a bitch gettin’ his freak on, HOWEVAH ...
Dear And Poor Folks Get Blamed For All the Retail Write-Offs, Once you, along with your sticky fingers, finally gets busted I bet your ex always suspected you got a case of the cray cray ... the only seven figures you’ll have on your mind is an atup in ya. Thankfully, he new better than to indulge your ass. torney’s phone number. Lord knows you probably would’ve regressed to some dark & twisted psychological hole while getting what you asked And the rush you’ll feel ... well, that’ll be your cell mate ramfor - And that poor bastard would’ve gone from the fantasy min‘ his big-ass dick in your non-lubricated boypussy! NEXT! to the county jail quicker than a welfare check cashed at a liquor store. NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, My boyfriend is in jail. He tells me he’s got sexual cravings that need satisfied. I do believe in love at first sight which is why I quit looking homeless people in the eyes. Just can’t risk it.
I’d rather be in a human centipede than a group text.
When the guy you slept with says, “Man, you have a lot of pill bottles,” should you feel bad?
A book is one of the very few things that can’t be judged by its cover. Get real! Who wants ugly, dirty, smelly or just plain bizarre? A list of things I’d like in a man: 1) My penis.
To the person that wants to suck a dick: you could suck my dick.
This daddy can keep it up all night for a clean hole. Otherwise you’ll have to suck it or go home.
Before you refer to someone as your ex, make sure they know you dated.
According to Coco Chanel, you should only spray perfume where you’d like to be kissed. Silly bitch. It burns like fuck.
