Michael Sam + Atlanta Falcons = Win-Win
I
’ll admit upfront that I’m not really a sports fan. I learned about baseball from my parents, so I know the proper terminology, but outside of that sport, I really couldn’t tell you much of anything other than which athletes look good. That being said, I’m unexpectedly excited about Michael Sam, the Missouri Tigers football player who came out just before the NFL draft.
Still, we’ll see what team ultimately drafts Sam. A lot of speculation actually points to our very own Atlanta Falcons as a potential team for Sam. General Manager Thomas Dimitroff has publicly thrown his support behind Sam, and people who know much more about football Why? It’s not like Sam is the first out than me have noted that his pass-rush ability is someathlete, let alone the first gay football thing the Falcons need. player. On the record, plenty of team representatives have said they’d have no problem picking Sam, but some NFL executives and coaches have also indicated that he’d likely drop in the drafts now. In other words, coming out very well may have affected his career before he joins a team. 8 // 02.19.2014

ou know how you meet those people that never seem to meet a stranger? Well, meet Eric, a staple at local gay favorite Oscar’s. An amazing bartender with enough sass and heart to make you fall in love, Eric is definitely one to check out!
How did you get your start?
I’ve always been in the service industry/restaurant biz, working at other establishments in Atlanta like Roxx Tavern and The Fifth Ivory. But a little over a year ago, a former coworker called me and told me they were looking to hire a new bartender and he mentioned me. The owners knew me from being a regular, so I came in and talked to them and started the next week! What’s your favorite drink to make, and what’s in it? Whenever someone asks for something “sweet and fun” (and I get that a lot), I make what I like to call an “Eric.” It is Blueberry vodka, Peach vodka, cranberry juice and a splash of orange juice. It’s sweet and refreshing, like me! What do you like about the ATL nightlife scene? Dislike? Like: Being from a somewhat small town in Alabama, I love the fact that there are so many options of fun and exciting things to do every night of the week! Whether its watching a game and playing trivia at Woofs, hanging with the regulars at Oscar’s or getting a group of friends together to go to BJ Roosters then Heretic and dance the night away! Dislike: There is never enough parking anywhere you go! 10 // 02.19.2014

I do not like the segregation of it. I don’t like the fact I can come to one club on a certain night and I don’t see a single Caucasian person there. And, in order to build my fan base, I have to travel all over the place. I don’t do well with segregation at all. DA: Can you tell us anything about the challenges from this upcoming season?
DA: You’re the first Atlanta queen to be on the show since season three. How does it feel to be part of an elite group of performers from Atlanta that have been part of that show’s history, like Nicole Paige Brooks, Phoenix, Mariah and Sonique? TKB: It feels right. I feel like this city possesses tons of talent but I really think that I’m one of those charms on that bracelet of talent that just happened to get picked. I think any one of us could have gone, but if we were trying to find someone worthy enough to represent this amazing city, I think I was a good choice, amongst others who could have. I think it feels right, and I represented Atlanta well. I hope I didn’t say anything that would make anyone upset, but that’s just my opinion! (Laughs)
TKB: (Laughs) You know I can’t! But just to let you know, this is the best season; the most talented season thus far. The queens this season absolutely kill it. There will be no disappointment when it comes to talent because where one contestant lacks, another one gains. The ‘Drag Race’ Judge on Season Six, Her Relationship with RuPaul, and More!

ou may have seen her in the group Seduction (“it takes two to make a thing go right!”) or on RuPaul’s Drag Race. She’s fierce, she’s fine, and she’s set to take on the world, no matter what obstacles get in her way. I got the chance to talk with Michelle Visage, in between stops at Starbucks, to talk about life on set at Drag Race, what she looks for in a queen, her relationship with RuPaul and much, much more. David Atlanta: How have you been since the last time we saw you, since the end of season five? Michelle Visage: I’ve been busy, and blessed, and healthy. And everything’s good. I can’t complain! DA: How did you and Miss RuPaul become friends? MV: Ru and I knew each other in the clubs, back in the 80’s. I didn’t know him, he didn’t know me, but we were all hired by the legendary party promoter Suzanne Barge for an event. We had seen each other, we’d say hey girl, all that, and I would just sit there completely enamored by who he was because he’s just amazing to watch. It was until 1992 when we connected. We were both doing a show together in NYC and they put us in the same suite, and I finally was like “I don’t know if you remember me or not…” and he said “Bitch! I’ve been watching you for years! You are a fuckin’ star! I used to watch you with Seduction and your little blonde ass hopping across the stage, and I knew you were the star of that group.” And that was kind of the beginning! When 1996 rolled around, a new radio station in NYC was launched called WKTU. Radio was always something that I had a passion for and I wanted to do. Once again, I had no experience, but I somehow finagled my way in for them to see me. The way I do it, if I get a chance, I’m gonna nail it. All I need is a chance and I will drive the shit home. If I can’t deliver, I won’t put myself out there. I know what I can do and I know what my limitations are. If something called for someone to sing like Mariah Carey, I’m not gonna go for it.

TRIVIA THURSDAYS 8PM
Anyway, I ended up impressing everyone at the radio station. They were testing out a few people to take the morning show, which is the most important part of the day; it’s the most extensive. And they ended up putting RuPaul and I together for Fashion Week, and that was the beginning of the end. We did that show for two years, and a few months into it in 1996, Ru had his talk show and he brought me on as his co-host, and that was the beginning of our partnership.
DA: Who was your favorite in past seasons? MV: Nope. I don’t play that game. I don’t have favorites, because I only love them all. You might say “Oh well I know you love Manila” or whoever, but I don’t love anybody best. There might be challenges where I connect with a certain contestant or with their personality but I don’t play favorites. At all.
DA: We see a lot of what happens backstage with the DA: Do you have any solo projects? Books you’ve girls on “UnTucked”, but what about the judges? Tell written, blogs? me some of the crazy backstage antics that happen. MV: I have a lot of stuff that is being worked on, but I won’t talk about it until it’s done. I find it horrible when I read stuff and people talk a big game and they never deliver, and you go “Whatever happened to that TV show?” or “Whatever happened to that record?” So, yes, I have some stuff in the works and we should know about them soon, and I won’t talk about them, so don’t even bother! (Laughs) But I do blog for World of Wonder, the company that puts on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and I have a blog on my website, so you can keep up with what’s going on there.
MV: There really aren’t that many, to be honest. There are jokes being thrown around with the celebrities and all that, and then Santino and I just throw shade at each other all day, because we love each other.
People don’t get to see our real relationship, because we’re super close, but I think people think that we hate each other. (Laughs) It works better for the show, I guess, that we don’t agree. And we don’t, you know? We just have different aesthetics. Queens of the Green Screen: Learning from Atlanta’s Former Drag Race Contestants
R
uPaul’s Drag Race is back – and so is Atlanta. For first time since season three, our proud city will be represented by one of our very own queens, Miss Trinity K. Bonet. With a line of alums in her wake, Trinity has the advantage of the inside scoop, the dirt, the do’s and the don’ts – and you know these girls dish. As we send yet another beautiful Atlanta queen out into RuPaul’s world of glitz and glam, we provide her with the words of wisdom from none other than Nicole Paige Brooks and Phoenix.
By Dylan S. Goldman raises you to be a woman, and give the illusion of a woman. In some places they’re really animated with their bodies and their faces; that’s not really my aesthetic.
Favorite Moment: I really had the most fun afterwards, hanging out with the girls at the hotel. It was interesting to get to know the girls from different regions of the country, and how different drag is in different places, but how it is also similar. Everyone’s background is always so different; it’s interesting. We all have the same job, but we do it differently, because we are from different places.
Hardest Challenge: I had never been away from my son before, so when it came time to give my phone up, I didn’t sleep well. I was panicked; I was waking up every hour on the hour. So when there was the possibility of really going home, I was very excited. [When I was eliminated] I was relieved to be going home. I had also never been away from my extended family that long. And I have my son every day, so it was especially hard leaving him and his mother, and not being able to check on them or speak to them, or my friends. That was probably harder than anything else: the separation anxiety. But if I had the opportunity to do All-Stars or anything like that, that would be okay. My son is seven now, not two or three. I shouldn’t have such anxiety about being away from my family for a little bit. (Laughs) They are very capable, even though I try not to allow that very often! But not knowing what was happening and hope, and worrying about it was hard.
Biggest Shock: I was surprised at how draggy some of the girls were. Some cities are more clubby, which Atlanta was until recently, but I was raised to be a female impersonator, not necessarily, like, a drag queen. I was raised by trans girls: Shawnna Brooks, Heather Daniels…so that’s my illusion. I want to be perceived as a woman, mistaken for a woman, and a lot of places want it to be really overdone. I don’t pad my body, cover my eyebrows and draw them on or anything like that. I was exposed to the Backstreet girls; Charlie Brown
Advice for Trinity: First off, enjoy this. I never thought I would be doing drag to start with. This wasn’t like a career goal of mine, which it is now. Nicole kind of just avalanched and happened. Even being on RuPaul wasn’t something I was planning or had signed up for. So really enjoy the whole process of it. And don’t Google yourself. Don’t go onto anyone’s blog, don’t read their comments…because everyone is entitled to their opinion. Not everyone’s going to like you. You have to be okay with that.

I say that, but I’m sure there is going to be a good quantity of readers who will read that and say, “Um, she is still Hardest Challenge: Of course besides being eliminated. just as bitchy as she was then.” And I know that is definitely a (Laughs) I think the hardest challenge was the game of reality characteristic of mine, but I am perfectly aware of and happy TV. It is such a game. When I went on the show, I wasn’t really with that characteristic. There’s just something about being in TV mode. I was more ready to do a competition, and that’s off the show now and having been on the show that has just what I was in for. But it’s not. DA: Do you demand too much from relationships? RS: I am pretty laid back about a lot of things except the core values of what a relationship is about. I am pretty headstrong in that respect. I like to keep it real. I don’t take the guy I am with for granted so I don’t want to be taken for granted either. I can show a guy a really good time in a relationship if he knows what he wants. DA: In “It’s Not Gonna Work 4 Me!,” you sing about dumping your lover for wanting an open relationship. Why are open relations not for you? RS: I can only speak for myself and what works for me. For me, personally, the purpose of a relationship is about wanting to be together with a special someone. If the guy I am seeing wants to be with someone else, then he should go and be with that someone else. It’s just how I feel at this point in time. I also never commit myself to a relationship until I feel that I can offer the same.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
You may need an emotional outlet today, but don’t get it through food. Being in the dumps could have you losing control, and the next thing you know you’ll be clearing out your refrigerator. Seek comfort of a friend instead, but avoid their invitations to talk about it over lunch.
A recent intellectual connection has inspired you to break outside your box and try something new. It’s a good day to get creative, and look no further than your own home. Maybe it’s time to change the color scheme of the bedroom, or look through swatches for the perfect curtain fabric. Feathering your nest will give you the feeling of comfort and security.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
You’ve inherited many traits from your mother, namely her hair, hips and cooking skills. You can work on those first two, but let the third one shine today. Invite friends to your table, whip up an extraordinary feast and make sure everyone leaves with leftovers. She would be so proud!
Let go of your emotions today and take in a weepy movie. ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ is a guaranteed three-hankie tearfest. Don’t be afraid to cry; it’s a great release. Have plenty of Kleenex close by or your popcorn will be coated in tears rather than processed butter substitute and salt.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
Keep your possessions close today as being selfish will be a good thing. Don’t care what people think as you refuse to share anything with them. That’ll include recent juicy gossip. Use that as your ace card today. With the possession of gossip comes great power!
Monitor your moods before you follow them today. Be active and social if you wake up happy and sunny, but clear out at the first sign of storm clouds. The heavens will let loose with lightning and thunder, and then a hard rain’s a-going to fall! Don’t subject others to that storm if you don’t have to.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
The 50’s sci-fi version of your life would feature a giant marauding crab, and you’d be playing the crab! Keep your larger than life emotions to a low roar today. The movie could end with scientists inventing a really big pot of boiling water, and an equally big ramekin of melted butter.
When you see what your partner serves for dinner tonight you may wish you were somewhere else. Like on an airplane bound to destinations of culinary delights. Uh-oh, that means you’ll have to eat whatever they’re serving on the flight. Hmmm, maybe dinner won’t look so bad after all.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
Your subconscious may play tricks with your mind today. How else to explain people suddenly morphing into chickens, cows and swordfish? The office will be like something out of a Pink Floyd album! You may want to take an early lunch today. Either that or a whole lot of sedatives.
There may be times today when thinking won’t do you any good at all. It’ll be better to close your eyes and let instinct guide you. When you reopen them you’ll see that the worst is over, and you were able to get down the meatloaf at the company cafeteria. Keeping it down could be another story.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
Don’t let dinner with friends turn into a therapy session tonight. Sometimes you just want to enjoy a nice meal without listening to everyone’s problems. Turn the tables on them. At the first sign of whining let them know that dinner will cost ninety dollars an hour. That’ll shut ‘em up!
Playing the strolling minstrel at the park or Renaissance Fair is one thing. Bringing that character to work is another. Coworkers wouldn’t mind the Jethro Tull costume and lute playing if your rhyming weren’t so awful, and you didn’t have bits of food hanging from your beard.

here is one type of bitch that I do not have time for, and that’s a bitch who can’t hold their alcohol. Why do these whores spend good money on guzzling down everything they can keep a steady hand on, only to “Roman Shower” all over our good shoes? What do you think about this? -Pebbles Dear Now I’ve Officially Heard It All, I’d be over your ass too! With all that toxic shit in your drunken system, I’m sure you used up one of kitty’s 9 lives.

Straights do…what on Sundays? Laundry? I’ll keep my brunch, thanks!
Really, gurl? Coming to work and complaining that you have so much to do; probably wouldn’t seem to be as much if you were sober.
Some people have their ways. Others just show them! Time for real men in this “community” to step up and show these kids a real man! Muscles don’t make the man; his actions and heart do, boys!

Why is there a Vienna sausage in your pants? Top?! I don’t think so, mister!
As a bottom, I wash, clean and prep my ass before going out as I never know who I’m gonna meet. Why can’t all bottoms just be like me?
I don’t ask for blow jobs. They sound like they involve physical labor. Instead, I ask for mouth hugs. I don’t like those shoes. White bottoms get dirty so fast. …Wait, what are we talking about, again?
I know what you’re thinking: is your dick bigger than mine?
I put the semen in amusement. The people who tell you to calm down are the people who piss you off in the first place. *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
