Coming Out as HIV-Positive
W
ho says reality television can’t provide some inspiration? Take last week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked!, where contestant (and Atlanta resident) Trinity K. Bonet made a surprising confession:
It’s a strange twist for our community. As members of the LGBT community, the vast majority of us have experienced coming out in some form. We should be making it easier for people to come out in a different way – as HIV-positive, in this case – without feeling the stigmas “I am HIV-positive. I was diagnosed in August 2012, that many of us have faced coming out and I have so much to live for. I have so many goals as gay, bisexual, or trans. and aspirations that I want to conquer in my life, so I’m not going to let an obstacle get in the way. I wanted to That’s what makes Trinity’s admission come on this show, and I wanted to be that voice for so admirable. In the context of the show, people who are scared to speak out about that.” it’s an empowering moment. Outside of the show, Trinity’s desire to be a voice As a community, we’re still far too quick to stigmatize those for others living with HIV has already who are HIV-positive. I don’t mean to imply that we shun come true just by speaking out. It’s a those who are HIV-positive altogether. Just in our local com- tremendous move she’s made, and one munity, organizations that work to help those with HIV/AIDS that will hopefully make it easier for othare among our biggest charitable organizations. It’s some- ers living with HIV. thing that’s become engrained into our collective conscious, thanks to our historic connection to HIV. At the same time, though, when it comes to the way HIV is actually transmitted, there are still many members of our community who are too quick to judge those with HIV without a thought. Just go to your favorite dating app and see the number of people who will put something along the lines of “Neg here, looking for same.” Or worse. The thought process that those with HIV somehow were asking for it, or got what they deserved, is something that still exists in our community as well. Of course, stigmatizing people with HIV leads to other problems. As studies from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health have indicated, there may be a connection between HIV-related stigma and a reduction in testing interest. It’s unfortunate, but given the way people with HIV can be treated by others, it’s also understandable in some ways.

e’s an open book, an expert bartender and slings gummy bears like you wouldn’t believe! His name is Mark Henderson and he’s one of the resident drink slingers at Oscar’s in Ansley Square. A good ole southern boy at heart, he’ll be your listening ear and he’s definitely a bartender you want on your side! Favorite drink to make/signature drink/whats in it? My favorite drink is a White Gummy bear! It has Raspberry vodka, Peach Schnapps, sour, and Sprite. If you like the sound of that, come see me! It can be served as a drink or a shot! Can you guess what people are drinking before they even order it? Usually, but then again we have a lot of regular guests. I see them walking in and try to get their drink ready before they even sit down. What do you like about the Atlanta nightlife scene? Dislike? My favorite part is always meeting new people. There is always someone new to talk to, to get to know. And their stories are all so interesting! Of course, sometimes that’s the dislike as well. It can be hard to remember every single person you run into.

I’ve Got a Ru
ATTITUDE RuPaul’s Determined Rise to Fame
R
BY DYL AN S. GOLDMAN
uPaul Charles has never been guilty of dragging his feet when it comes to breaking down the walls of gender and show business. With 11 albums, numerous TV guest appearances and cameos on the silver screen, RuPaul obviously took his own advice when he wrote the simple yet poignant words, “You. Better. Work.”
have an idea of what it should be, and they spend the rest of their lives trying to make that work, when it’s smarter to work with what you have, and what the universe is telling you. And go with that. DA: (Laughs) You’re absolutely right. I think that people do try to put things in holes that don’t belong there.
Currently in the height of season number six of RuPaul’s Drag Race, drag’s own supermodel herself shared her personal RP: (Laughs) take on the many facets of drag, Atlanta’s influence on her career and the advice she gives her girls. DA: Right? David Atlanta: Obviously, you wanted to be in the industry from early on, I don’t know, from childhood even, perhaps? Not drag per se, but in music and the club scene. So did you always want to do drag? You definitely did jump headlong into it. From what I’ve heard, this happened in Atlanta.
RP: Uh huh…
RuPaul: Yes! No, no, it wasn’t that I was set on drag; I always knew that I was going to be in show business. My real talent was that I was smart enough to listen to what the universe was telling me. And the universe said, “Drag is your golden ticket.” And I said, “Really, drag?” And it said, “Yes.” So I said, “Okay!”, and the moment that I said “Okay”, ancient doors opened. And I think it’s true for everyone who wants to set out and make a life for themselves, is that the universe has a frequency. The universe has stage direction that, if you listen to it, and you follow that frequency, it will guide you.
RP: Well, it did have an influence, a major influence. The thing is, when I was doing drag in Atlanta, I was kind of coming from the sort of punk world. We were doing it as a social message. It was kind of like a pith take. We were doing it as a social commentary. It wasn’t until much later until I decided, “Okay, I’m going to turn into Glamazon. And I’m gonna do it big time.” But I wasn’t doing… I was doing genderfuck back then.
DA: Now, when you’re in drag…I feel weird even calling you a “drag queen”, you’re so fish. Do you think that Atlanta had any influence…because it is so fishy here.
DA: When you released “Supermodel,” you were really Glamazon then – was that the point of transiLike, you see those hawks who are riding the heat waves tion? Like, did you do it for that? in canyons and stuff. They know where the swells are, and that’s what guides them. And the same thing that was true RP: Okay, in Atlanta, it was genderfuck. But then when I with my career. Most people try to fit a round hole in a square moved to New York and needed to make money, I started dopeg, or… (Laughs) or a square peg in a round hole…They ing my next favorite look, which was my black hooker davidatlanta.com // 15
look, which was so much fun. And I worked in clubs in New York. And then when I decided I needed to go above ground to make it in the mainstream, that’s when I changed to Glamazon. DA: Right. And I guess some people would call that selling out, but I don’t think that’s it at all. I think that it is making a living. RP: Right, I mean, selling out…We live in a consumer culture. If you’re not gonna sell it, you might as well just move to Cuba. DA: Girl, I know. And I am from New York City. RP: (Laughs) DA: So you’ve had four of our girls so far on the show. Do you have any expectations from Atlanta that are different? Higher? …Lower? RP: Actually, I do! The show is cast as an ensemble, and we want to represent many different factions and genres of drag. So when an Atlanta girl is on, I immediately go to the traditional, really show stopping, costumes galore drag aesthetic, which I learned in Atlanta. It is very distinctive. Back when I was living in Atlanta, [it] was the mecca of all drag. It was where everybody from the South came there to do their thing. And back then there were all of these show bars that were beautiful stages. It was like Las Vegas, you know. I don’t know if it’s like that anymore, but… DA: We’ve lost our way. RP: Yeah, yeah… DA: But we’re getting it back. RP: Yeah…I do expect a certain type. Even from Florida, there’s a certain Florida aesthetic; There’s a certain New York aesthetic that’s different from any other region. So, yeah, I do expect a certain thing, but I’m always willing to be pleasantly surprised by something different. DA: Have you dealt with, well, of course you have. When the girls get attitudes, because they think their shit doesn’t stink, how do you deal with that? RP: (Raised voice) Well, you know…I allow people to do their own thing. And you have to realize, too, that after the show is over, we are calling girls in to do other shows. So it’s important in business to not burn bridges. And it’s important for an entertainer to know that it’s really a small community, and if you create bad blood, or a bad attitude, nobody’s going to hire you. DA: I know that there are a lot of egos that go into entertaining. Have you had to…I mean, without burning any bridges, have you had to sit down with anyone? 16 // 04.2.2014
RP: Sit down with anyone and say, “Hey gurl, you better RP: Well, my new album, called Born Naked, came out on February 24th, the same day that our show premiered on watch yourself?” Logo. I couldn’t be more proud of it. I’ve got duets with so many people on this. It’s almost a duet record. It’s not DA: Yeah. Yeah. really a duet record, but I re-team with Big Freedia, who I RP: I talk to all of them eventually off camera, and say, did “Peanut Butter” with – she’s the queen of New Orleans “Okay, look, this is what’s happening. You’re about to be Bounce music. And then I have a duet with Michelle Visage, propelled onto the world stage. Everybody in the world is who is my friend and partner for years, and then Martha going to know you, so have your shit together. Handle your Wash and I do a duet on this album. shit, ladykins, and be prepared. Get your Twitter account up, get some products going, know that you’re representing my DA: I think I heard that somewhere before the rebrand throughout the world, and it’s important to be a lady, lease, about the duets. It may be the voices in my head, though, I’m still trying to figure out where in the mortal words of Stacy Layne Matthews. they’re coming from. DA: Exactly. And there’s a difference between reading bad press, and taking it like a lady, and RP: I’m sure it is. reading it and making fool of yourself. So what do you see the major differences between Atlanta DA: Thanks, Ru. You’re fabulous. We love you. We’re proud that you have roots here in Atlanta. and New York drag to be? RP: Well, Atlanta is more, and I can only base this on what my experience back then was, but it’s a more traditional drag. It’s more the look and feel of real, and the showmanship is pretty on point. In New York, it’s more irreverent. It’s more raw, and there’s a comedy aspect to it that is really irreverent. DA: You are working on several projects. Is there anything you can talk about?

BeBe Gives Good Face

eBe Zahara Benet was the last queen standing on the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She did it with creativity and attitude, working her curves on the runway and in front of the lens. Still, she doesn’t credit her hips with taking home the crown; she says it was her face. “Nothing beats the face,” she sings about it in her hot new single that hits streets this month. The ricocheting tribal rhythms and braggadocios dance lyrics in Bebe’s ode to beauty are sure to get the queens battling on the dance floor this season.
DA: How is “Face” different than “I’m the Shit” and “Cameroon”? BZB: “Face” face fuses tribal, pop, dance, and electro sounds all in one song. It’s modern, fresh, fun… something for the kids. DA: What inspires your music? BZB: Memories from my two homes, Africa and America.
DA: If you could give one piece of advice to young David Atlanta: Do people still scream “Cameroon” Bebe after winning the first RuPaul’s Drag Race, what at you everywhere you go? would it be? BeBe Zahara Benet: (Laughs) I am telling you, if I hear it one BZB: Enjoy every moment because they will become the memomore time! DA: Being on a big show like RuPaul’s Drag Race has to have been a boost to your career. Has it hurt in any way? BZB: I’m not sure I would say hurt, but it has its challenges. With so many entertainers coming from the show, we all naturally go for the same jobs. Luckily, there are many spaces out there that are in need of our art. DA: How are you different from the other Drag Race girls putting out songs? BZB: I am so happy that other drag entertainers are expressing themselves through music. I think it opens us up to a broader market. As for how different I am, I have a really good music foundation. I grew up singing in church. I do a lot of my own songwriting and compositions. DA: What is the main message in “Face”? BZB: When I was on Drag Race, “Face” became a tag word that resonated with a lot of my fans. What better way of celebrating “Face” than with a song? Remember “your face” is everything. 26 // 04.2.2014

Kiss & Tell Kylie Minogue on Starting Over, Sia’s Sex Songs and Australia’s ‘Backwards’ Gay Marriage Ban
K
ylie Minogue knows the power of fate, determination and survival. That along with her many celestial-pop confections (and, let’s face it, lots of gays) have propelled the Aussie showgirl further than a lot of doubters predicated when she was classified as a mere one-hit wonder back in the ’80s.
She sure showed them. Not even cancer could get in her way, because 26 years after her self-titled debut, Kylie, Minogue releases her 12th – and quite possibly best – studio album, Kiss Me Once.
By Chris Azzopardi ing more deliberate choices song-wise to reflect your life? And what was the turning point – when did you decide that it was important to choose songs that meant something to you? KM: I don’t know how to answer that. That’s a hard question. At the end of 2012 I had a realization: I needed to change in order to move forward, and essentially I’m doing the same thing. I’m recording, I’m touring, I’m doing, at the core, the same stuff. But I needed some new energy. I needed new life to reenergize. I was celebrating 25 years in the business, and yeah, I just had a very powerful realization and I felt very calm that this is actually the right thing to do. So this is why I changed management. I changed something that had been a constant for 25 years and I threw myself into a new environment.
“Into the Blue,” the disc’s liberating lead single, is a mantra of perseverance and self-reliance that only someone like Minogue could profess: “I’m still here, holding on so tight.” How did she keep her grip? In a recent chat, Minogue, 45, talked about the essentials to maintaining pop-icon longevity, Australia’s “backwards” gay marriage ban and how Kiss Me DA: And did you want this album to mirror your own Once ended up reflecting her own life. experiences?
David Atlanta: You’ve truly outdone yourself on KM: It actually didn’t transpire that way. I co-wrote one song this album, Kylie. on the album (“Fine”), and I felt going into this album, which is the case with every album, that I don’t mind if I write the Kylie Minogue: Oh, wow, I don’t even know what to say to song or if someone else writes the song – it’s really about the that. That’s amazing. Thank you. song. But I do feel like my frame of mind was open and I did a lot of songs that really – well, they’re not personal, but they’re DA: When we chatted at the end of 2012, around more like “Sexercise.” They just felt right for where I am in my the time you celebrated 25 years in the business life at the moment. with The Abbey Road Sessions, you said you wanted your next studio album to be more personal. now I’m no longer in that relationship. So it’s odd that the lyrics and the sentiment of “Into the Blue” resonate even deeper now. I kind of feel like some of these personal songs – songs that might seem personal – I just gravitated toward those. “Kiss Me Once” – I feel that. “Fine” – I feel. So I don’t have a tidy answer for that, but I just feel like it’s the headspace I was in. The songs just made sense to me.
She’s written for some of the biggest artists today, and she’s dialed in and knows what’s happening at the moment – I think she also knows what’s about to happen – so she’s really just perfect. And she’s an Aussie, and she’s a girl, and I’m a great admirer of her writing, and of how she breaks some of the rules and how she does things the way she wants to do them. I have so much respect for that. So I’m a bit of an uber fan, and now I can say that I’m a friend as well. It’s really just a DA: With regard to all the sex songs on the al- great, great result. bum, the media’s been saying you “blamed” Sia for them. KM: (Laughs) Well, maybe not on my first album, or even on my second album, but yeah, it’s nothing new. Let’s face it, most songs are about love, being out of love, sex, tears, breakup, makeup. It just so happens I have three with “sex” in the title on this album. It’s just how it transpired. You might as well do it in threes, right?
KM: Not really, but it might have been the intention of my new management! (Laughs) Roc Nation has a lot of connections, and they’re able to call someone like Pharrell and say, “Hey, have you got any time? We have Kylie and we want to get her with you.”
DA: Has one of your steamier songs ever come on in the middle of some sexy time? KM: (Laughs) Ah, no! I think I can honestly say no. That could really – oh my, I don’t even wanna think about that. Not for me anyway. I don’t mind for other people! DA: What line on Kiss Me Once makes you blush most? KM: Lemme think. Probably something from “Sexercise.” Mmm … oh gosh! “I’ll make you wait for more / Make you ache to the core / Tomorrow you’ll be sore. ... Lemme see you bounce, bounce, bounce.” DA: Sia wrote that song, and she obviously possesses something special; everyone’s been tapping into her lately. And she executive produces your album. What did you find so special about working with Sia? KM: Well, first, I went to write with her to record some of her songs, and we got on so well that after a couple of our sessions I asked if she’d write more of the album and if she’d come onboard with me as executive producer. She said “yes” right away. I really wasn’t sure if that would interest her, but long story short, she was on board right away. I gave her everything that I’d recorded, which at that point was already quite a lot of songs. And she wrote the title track, “Kiss Me Once,” which I just adore. But I had a bunch of songs already. Definitely not all of them, but I had quite a lot – at least, god, 40 or 50 songs – and she said that “Into the Blue” was the first single. Sure enough, that was the first single. davidatlanta.com // 31
I think we did what I normally do, which is work with some of the best and most dependable pop writers and producers. And I work with some new and upcoming people on this album – someone like MNEK, and someone left field like Ariel (Rechtshaid) – so it’s got all the same elements that I would have on a good album of mine. But I don’t know – I just think that everything feels a little more ... I don’t know the word for it. It just feels right.
KM: (Laughs) Yeah, well, if it ever happens I know whose door I’ll be knocking on. You know, I love him so much I probably couldn’t even be mad at him.
DA: Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, who worked with you on your last studio album, 2010’s Aphrodite, told Attitude magazine that you recorded enough songs with him over the years for an entire album.
DA: For over 25 years, you’ve successfully navigated the pop music scene and influenced a legion of stars. From your own experience, what does it take to be a pop icon and maintain not just your longevity but your sanity?
DA: What are the odds these tracks could surface?
KM: It’d be really good to do as a mixtape or something. If they were pressed and finished, then yeah. It’s different when things are leaked that are not where you want to get them, but I love the DA: Will you finally do a full-fledged tour of the idea that these little morsels are around. States? I’m not talking just a dozen dates – a full tour. DA: You have always been a proponent for equal marriage, but Australia, your home soil, still doesn’t KM: You know, I would love to. The last couple of times that I legally recognize marriage for gay couples. In Dehave toured I have done shows in the States, but the first time cember 2013, the court ruled against same-sex mar(in 2009) was because I really ran out of excuses. I mean, I just riages. What are your thoughts on the ban preventing kept saying “I can’t because my show is huge,” and logisti- gay people from getting married in Australia? cally and financially we couldn’t make it happen. Then I finally stomped my stiletto and said, “I have to go; I have to connect KM: As always, I support gay marriage. I feel like it will happen to the people who have supported me thus far.” So I would, of eventually, but wouldn’t it be great if it happened sooner rather course, love to travel to more cities, see more of the U.S. – and than later? I just came from Australia where they had Mardi Gras yeah, bringing my A-show to the States would be fantastic. and it actually struck me when I was there, because I did Mardi Gras a couple of years ago – and I also did it in the mid-’90s – and I thought, “Wow, it’s so fortunate that people can express DA: Make it happen, Kylie. themselves that way.” It seems ironic and a bit backwards that marriage isn’t fully embraced with that. KM: I’ll stomp the other stiletto!
KM: Jake’s always getting me in trouble! DA: He said he’s gonna leak that album. 32 // 04.2.2014
KM: Hmm, sanity? Oh god. Keep your feet on the ground. Keep dreaming. Try and take care of yourself. Yeah, it’s somewhere in between being realistic and being a dreamer.

ARIES (March 20 – April 19):
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):
In your drive for success, the on-ramp may not be readily apparent. Find the best approach by slowing down and waiting for opportunity to present itself. Make sure you’re ready to step on the gas when the light turns from red to green.
You love fashion. You love mixing and matching and flaunting your finely honed sense of style. Go out and buy yourself pretty today, preferably in pink, pale green and shades of blue. Don’t worry about affording it. If the devil can wear Prada, why can’t you?
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):
You will gain a deeper understanding of a person or situation if you look at things from a different angle. Your own personal ideals and sense of purpose may also undergo a sea change as your enlightenment grows.
Getting the ball rolling will prove easy today as roadblocks fall, and friends are receptive to your leadership. Even your partner will be impressed with your skill in implementing plans and communicating ideas.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20):
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):
Confusing undercurrents abound as your partner becomes more like your boss than your lover. There may be something he’s not telling you, and it’s what he’s not saying that has you concerned. Through gentle persuasion he could reveal a personal problem that’s causing his recent change in behavior.
The focus will be on finances today as unexpected expenses cut into your mad money. Since a sugar daddy isn’t readily available, some belt tightening may be in order. Be smart about how you spend, as you may have to live on the cheap for a bit, or at least until the next paycheck.
CANCER (June 21- July 22):
CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):
How well you deal with a problem could spell the difference between a great day and a crappy one. Your proven ability to turn snatch victory from the claws of defeat may be tested as a solution could call for extreme measures that make you uncomfortable.
You’ve admired him from afar, and you’ve finally caught his eye. Now what? Good energy and confidence in yourself has gotten you this far, so don’t stop now. Taking things slow, or at a pace you like, will pay off, as you impress him with your quiet, yet steadfast pursuit.
LEO (July 23 – August 22):
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):
You’ve been quite the gym bunny lately, and you have the chiseled bod and six pack abs to prove it. This gives the you an even higher sense of ego, but don’t go overboard on the pumping and flexing. Others may get bored with your ‘look at me’ preening, and you risk looking silly.
Managing a roomful of monkeys banging on buckets may be easier than handling your pals today. You may have to dish out some discipline if anything is going to get done, a position the water bearer is never comfortable with. Do it with tact and grace, and they could see things your way.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):
PISCES (February 19 – March 19):
Problems with a relationship only strengthens your resolve to make it work. Get him involved and talk about it. Better yet, make plans to share some entertaining activities with him today. By not being so critical, and keeping things light, you might be able to put the ‘fun’ back in dysfunction.
A group you are part of suddenly finds itself rudderless, drifting along without direction. Take charge by helping to find someone who will take the reins. You’ll need someone who is loyal, dedicated and who leads with a quiet aura of empathy. Sound like someone you know?

o hell with Drunk In Love, these bitches are Stupid In Love! I’ve always advised that a person will be on their best behavior for about 90 days. But like a new hire employee, once that 90 days are up, expect that motha fuckah to clown and show their true goddamn self. And that’s exactly what happened in this week’s Favorite Bitch! Dear Miss Tiger, Me and my fiancé have been off and on for seventeen years. We broke up again last weekend. I threw that bastard and his clothes out for good this time! I know I’m a damn fool but I’m hoping you got some advice for me. -Trina Dear No You Didn’t Call Him A Fiancé, Trina, darling ... let me enlighten you on your fuckery: Had you married this motha fuckah, you’d be getting alimony and half of his pension. But instead ... you’re getting the toothbrush that ya forgot to throw in his damn bag. NEXT!
P.S. - Take comfort in knowing that she may be somebody’s first but she’ll never be anybody’s last. NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, My boyfriend attended his high school reunion. He left me soon after that, to go live out some fantasy with a guy he liked back then who ended up being gay. Any advice? Dear That’s Why You Don’t Send Your Man Solo To A Reunion, Yeah, I have some advice for you ... while he’s out looking for dick that’s 10 years older, get yourself some revenge and some dick that’s 10 years younger. NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, I left my boyfriend because I didn’t like the smell of his uncut dick. His dick was ten inches long and now I really miss it. Any advice? -Jayson Dear Couldn’t You Have Bought Some Goddamn Baby Wipes And Held Onto That Motha Fuckah, But then again, dicks are like the testers at the fragrance counter - and if you don’t like the smell, leave the bottle where ya found it. NEXT!
Dear Miss Tiger, I follow you on Twitter and need your help! My girlfriend ended our relationship. I thought she was still cool with Dear Miss Tiger, me, but she blocked me on Twitter. What’s this mean? My girlfriend found out that I had a one night stand with -Straight Boy my ex. I’m lost without her. What do you think? -Salvatore Dear Don’t Make Me Unfollow Your Ass Too, Baby, she blocked the pussy. Why wouldn’t she block Dear I Think This Is Why Straight People Twitter? NEXT! Need An App Like Grindr, Try handling your shit a little better the next time you and Dear Miss Tiger, your dick decide to take a trip down memory lane. NEXT! I lost my virginity to a girl at college. She has a wild reputation, but told me I was the type of woman she could settle down with. She dumped me two days after we had sex. What’s going on? Advice columnist • SiriusXM radio personality ... -Jeanette and everyone’s #FAVORITEBITCH
