A Note from the

Editor

“Hot” is What You Make of It

A

s you can probably tell by our cover – and definitely will be able to tell by our content in this issue – our first-ever Men of David event is reaching its climax. After a few months where you, our readers, have nominated and voted on contenders for the Man of David title, you’ll get to decide on the recipient this Saturday. One aspect of the contest that’s created some discussion, though, revolves around one word we’ve used during this whole campaign: “hot.” More specifically, what constitutes being “hot.” We heard some of the initial mutterings about this being a contest only for “ripped, muscled, club kids,” or other niches within the community.

Fortunately, plenty of you didn’t think like this, and instead decided to nominate people you thought were hot. The result? A mix of ages, body types, and personalities comprise our finalists. The voting in this contest was fierce and highly competitive. Since I started as editor in chief of David Atlanta, one of my top priorities has been to make this magazine more representative of our community as a whole, while sticking with the types of coverage that have made David Atlanta an institution in our community. It has absolutely thrilled me to see the different communities represented throughout the Men of David contest, and I can only hope that the next time we do something like this, even more members of the community will be represented. I’ll do my part, and I hope you’ll do yours.

E

ven if she weren’t drop dead gorgeous, this blonde bombshell will take your breath away with her accent alone. She’s Belinda Escott, Blake’s own thunder from down under, and the Australian “beauty” of “Beauty and the Beat” Thursdays.

What has been your craziest experience as a bartender? This girl came in, and she seemed fine; I had only served her two drinks. But next thing you know, she’s trying to take all her clothes off on the bar, and just…(laughs)…like, went completely from 100 to zero in 2.5 seconds, and it was horrifying! And I just couldn’t get her to calm down, or keep her clothes on. And then she ran to a trash bin and proceeded to throw up. She wasn’t completely naked; she couldn’t quite figure it out. Say a customer walks up to order a drink, and says, “Surprise me.” What do you do? I always ask them if they like sweet…so if they go for sweet, I’ve got this cool drink – it kind of tastes like a SweeTart. I always find out what they’re about a little bit, and then just kind of go for it. But I’m at 100% so far; no one’s ever returned a drink. What is the worst thing a customer can do?

(Snaps) Ah…click their fingers. I think that if a person does that to anybody in customer service…I think most people here, though, have basic courtesy, and that’s really important. It’s been a great experience because of that; our clientele is really, really nice. And I think that being a gay club makes a difference, because most gay people have had, you know, situations in their life when they’ve been challenged with feeling accepted. So I think that gay people tend to be a little nicer in general, and a little more courteous. I mean, that’s my take on it. 10 // 04.23.2014

ou’ve nominated your picks for Atlanta’s hottest men. You’ve voted for the finalists of the competition. Now it’s your turn to select the firstever Man of David, live at Jungle at 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. Before you find out more about our finalists, though, we want to talk a little bit about the beneficiary of the Men of David event – AID Atlanta. We spoke with Branden Lane, one of the nominees of the Men of David contest and the Individual Giving Officer over at AID Atlanta, about his passion for the organization. Rather than filtering it through an interview, we decided to give Branden the space to talk at length about the importance of AID Atlanta as an organization, and the importance of the Men of David event as a fundraiser.

As gay males, I feel we have a social responsibility to care for what happens in our community and to raise awareness for the issues we deal with on a daily basis. I feel honored to be a part of Men of David because I try in my career and lifestyle to be the type of positive role model Men of David is looking for. This includes: living a natural/healthy lifestyle, making YouTube videos to teach people proper workouts/nutritional plans, helping my personal clients as a personal trainer to become the best they can be and being an active member in the Atlanta community. Are you involved in any community groups or as an activist? I help out with a nonprofit organization named Thriving Children, which helps abused/neglected/exploited children find shelter/food/support. TV Show: Scandal, House of Cards and Once Upon Time Atlanta Drag Queen: Evah Destruction Celebrity Crush: Zachary Quinto What does being a part of Men of David mean to you? For me it is all about being able to do something fun to help AID Atlanta and the community. The Atlanta community hosts a tremendous amount of fundraisers throughout the year. Not everyone is able to donate as much as they want to financially for all the great causes they love, but it is through participating in things such as the Men of David that really makes a difference for a charity on a different level. Volunteering to participate is just as important as writing a check. Are you involved in any community groups or as an activist? Through my various art shows I’ve had the pleasure to work with many of Atlanta’s charities. I’ve used art to raise funds for AID Atlanta, the MISTER Center, the Atlanta Bucks, Joining Hearts, Lost-N-Found and have donated art for various other charities. On some level with my art I’ve become a bit of an activist where I have strove through my works to teach people acceptance of those that are different and compassion for what we keep inside ourselves. What are some of your most unique attributes? I’d say that my most defining attribute is probably my mouth. I am a very open book and I tend to not leave anything off the table for discussion whether it be something hard to talk about or very light and humorous. I rarely have a filter when it comes to what I am passionate about and very much enjoy the process of getting to know yourself and asking questions. Anyone who has seen my art knows I have an incredible intensity to my thought process, but also a great sense of humor. I’ll make myself the butt of a joke if it made someone have a better day. That said...my tube sock picture does seem to get noticed a lot. 24 // 04.23.2014

Celebrity Crush: I’m a whore: Channing Tatum, Vin Diesel, Kevin James, Seth Rogen, Jason Momoa, Noel Fisher, Ty Olsson, Andy Samberg, Drake, Pitbull What does being a part of Men of David mean to you? It means that finally a fat kid is represented. The gym bunnies are totes adorbs, but the Atlanta community is much more than perfect-bodied homos. Our beautiful community is comprised of transgendered, overweight, obese, rail thin, athletic, lethargic, older, monogamous, polyamorous, rich, poor, struggling, bored, happy, depressed, alcoholic, religious, engaging, dispondent, shy, outgoing, nervous, political, and self confident men and women...and they are just as important to be represented in David Atlanta. Their stories matter, and are what will really help connect the different facets within the GLBT Community of Atlanta. I want to help bridge that gap with a real and frank face and voice. I am a Man of David. Are you involved in any community groups or as an activist? Absolutely I am! Not only do I work for Dragon Con, an annual event that fosters over 45 million dollars in revenue for the downtown Atlanta community of businesses each year, but I engage in several activities and events each year for area charities. I recently assisted in a clean up project at Sweetwater Creek Park, and have a LUPUS walk at the end of April. I have a day in May where myself, and other Dragon Con superheroes will be assisting our Official Charity, the Atlanta Community Food Bank...with a day in their facility sorting food to be distributed. In the Fall, my softball team The Honey Badgers, will once again be part of the South Paw League. The League sets up several opportunities for all of us to assist the local animal charities. If I have the great honor of being the face of David Atlanta for 2014, I’m sliding some of those prizes right over to the Lost and Found Youth organization. 28 // 04.23.2014

I saw her in Aliens in the early nineties and that whole butch thing kind of got me going.) What does being a part of Men of David mean to you? Other than the obvious of competing for a title of ‘Hottest Man,’ being a part of Men of David is an honor. It means a great deal knowing that this is a competition that I was voted into by my peers, was catapulted into the top 9 by the overwhelming votes of friends and family; all the while being given the opportunity to give in return. It gives me a sense of pride being able to help and give hope to those in dire straits by donating to this great cause. What do you like to do in your free time? I spend hours in the gym on a daily basis. So one could say that fitness is my passion. Some who know me, know that I am an artist at heart. I live to draw, paint, write, or perform in any media that I can get myself into. It’s a passion that really gets ignited once I get that chance to create. Spending time with friends is also something that I love doing when I get the chance. There’s nothing like hanging around a bunch of guys that ‘get’ you and don’t care how weird you are. I also love being in the outdoors, especially when hiking and exploring new things are on the agenda. It’s my jam. I guess you could say that I am kind of a kid in that sense, always wanting to see and do and climb all over things. Lastly, I am a video game enthusiast. Give me a rainy day or stay-at-home night, and you can bet I will have a controller in my hand. What’s your favorite thing about Atlanta? Besides the food? Atlanta has some of the coolest neighborhoods. From Little 5 to Brookhaven, Atlanta is just as diverse as its people. With the Beltline underway, it makes venturing to the neighborhoods that much easier, and you know I love exploring! 30 // 04.23.2014

What does being a part of Men of David mean to you? To be quite honest, it is flattering to be involved in a contest looking for the “Hottest Man in Atlanta,” but it’s even more flattering and humbling to see the support that my friends, family, clients and even strangers have shown, and continue to show, through this process. There’s nothing like knowing a community has your back and wants you to succeed. What makes a guy “hot” to you? Besides having a full set of teeth? Hands down, it is a quick wit and a stellar sense of humor. Also, someone with a true, undeniable talent really turns me on. Following that, he has to be fit and live a healthy lifestyle, love animals, and be willing to live and embrace my Buffy the Vampire Slayer obsession. What is your passion? Keeping my boyfriend Griff out of the pantry! She can down an entire bag of Kettle Chips in a single breath! Obviously, fitness is extremely important to me, and sharing that passion with my friends, family and clients. Dance, choreography and acrobatics also continue to be great passions in my life, even though I’ve “retired” from that world. Outside of my professional world, cultivating honest, lasting relationships with the people closest to me is paramount. And writing....I still want to write novels when I grow up.

main event Y ou’ve nominated your picks for Atlanta’s hottest men. You’ve voted for the finalists of the competition. Now it’s your turn to select the firstever Man of David, live at Jungle at 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.

We’ve revealed our finalists earlier in this issue, and they’re a diverse group of hot men representing different parts of our larger community. At the Men of David event, they’ll be working to raise money from you that not only benefits AID Atlanta, but helps determine if they’re the Man of David. But what else can you expect at David Atlanta’s first-ever Men of David event? Try a mix of what we’re most famous for including in our issues: sexy men, drag queens, hot music and drinks. We’re also holding a silent auction with some fine items provided by our evening’s various sponsors. And that’s just for general admission. VIP admission includes a special pre-event reception starting at 8 p.m., light snacks, samplings of Smirnoff, VIP swag bags, and more.

Calisto and the Smirnoff Men: The Honorary Men of David Calisto Harvalias, the LGBT Specialist for Diageo Spirits, never turns down an opportunity to give back to the LGBT community and his beloved City of Atlanta. When this former model and Mister New York found out that he was one of this year’s nominees for Men of David, he knew he had to be involved in the event. 44 // 04.23.2014

“When I was told about the nomination, I was so flattered,” he said. “Then I found out it benefits a wonderful charity, AID Atlanta. My managing director, Frank Mendez, and I definitely wanted to help out by being a sponsor of the contest with Smirnoff Vodka. I knew it might be a conflict of interest to be a sponsor and a contestant, so I decided to sit on the sidelines and cheer on my handsome peers.”

certainly opinionated – and that’s why we love her. Lady Bunny is our special guest performer for the Men of David event, but don’t be surprised if you find her somewhere else around the club that night looking for one (or more) of our finalists.

If the delicious libations of Smirnoff aren’t enough, keep in mind their involvement in Atlanta’s LGBT community. Numerous LGBT events in Atlanta are sponsored by Smirnoff throughout the year. Smirnoff has, most prominently, served as an official Atlanta Pride sponsor for 13 years.

For any party, there are certain ingredients that are essential to making the mix successful. The right guests, the right atmosphere, the right entertainment – all of these can make or break an event. And with an event like Men of David, the DJ is an element that ties the whole evening together. When it comes to Atlanta-based DJs who never fail to keep the boys coming back to the dance floor, David Knapp consistently comes to mind.

“Atlanta has always been well known for its drag and its bevy of male beauties,” says Lady Bunny. “Not that I’m At the Main Event, Smirnoff will be the official vodka of the that picky! Feel free to ask him, the Smirnoff Models, David Knapp: or Frank Mendez about the Smirnoff brand or a specialty The Men of David cocktail suggestion. DJ

Calisto adds, “Frank Mendez and I, and all the Diageo family, are so proud to sponsor the Men of David benefiting AID Atlanta, and we would like to cordially invite you to come out to Jungle and support AID Atlanta. And of course, the spirits that support you as you!” Ruby Redd: The Men of David Emcee

Knapp has been in the upper echelon of the DJ community for more than 20 years. He helped to pioneer the character and energy of the South Beach, Miami club scene in its foundational years. Knapp has also presided in the booths of such legendary nightspots and events as Amnesia Tea Dances in South Florida, Limelight in New York City, Disney’s Gay Days, Provincetown’s Fourth of July parties, and many, many more.

Last year, Woodside creating Ready For Hope, a soon-to-be organization focusing solely on fundraising events, with the help of nine close friends. Mike, through R4H, puts the fun in fundraising with inexpensive events around town. Woodside, with the help of R4H, is responsible for raising over $30k for AID Atlanta last year alone. This Week in Theaters The Other Woman: After discovering her boyfriend is married, a woman (Cameron Diaz) tries to get her ruined life back on track. But when his wife (Leslie Mann) comes looking for her, she realizes they have a lot in common. When yet another affair is discovered (Kate Upton), the three team up to bring the man down. Brick Mansions: Paul Walker, in one of his final films, plays an undercover cop in Detroit who teams up with an ex-convict to stop a plot that will devastate the entire city. Hateship Loveship: Johanna (Kristen Wiig) is a profoundly shy woman who is hired as a housekeeper and primary caregiver for a young girl. When the girl attempts to create a pseudo-relationship between her father and Johanna, Johanna is able to picture the dream of a future for the first time. The Quiet Ones: Tucked away in an estate outside of London, a professor and his team of university students conduct an experiment on a young girl, but the dark forces they uncover are more terrifying than any of them expected.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

You often use your considerable charms to get what you want, and you don’t give much in return, other than a pat on the butt, and cab fare. Worse, you’ve stopped feeling guilty about it some time ago. It’s when you stop treating humans like humans that you stop being human yourself. Think of that today, before your reputation as a user comes back to haunt you.

You will have a deep appreciation for male beauty in all it’s glory today, and you will flirt shamelessly. Whether in the gym, or on the dance floor, you will want to revel in hot guys, preferably with their shirts off, or wearing as little as is legally possible. So today go to places where you can sing the body electric. And if that doesn’t work, there’s always the Internet.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

You met at the gym, and soon became workout partners. Now you’re working it, and now the gym isn’t the only place where things are getting physical. As with all exercise, all this physicality is going to take strength, stamina and the ingestion of lots of protein. Hopefully this relationship will last and grow. If not, you may have to find someplace else to work out.

Decisions will be difficult today, as your mind will be as cluttered and unfocused as an episode of ‘Lost’. You’re not sure why this is, but you better snap out of it, as your day will demand clarity of thought. Do the best you can today, and put up a professional front. After work, relax, lie on the couch and pull out a DVD of Heroes or CSI. Anything but Lost.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

You love the excitement of starting new projects. It’s finishing them that you’re not crazy about. The same goes with your men. You like being flirty and come-hither, but you lose interest once they get interested. Work on developing some focus today. Otherwise, people will know you by the trail of unfulfilled dreams and unrealized goals that you leave behind.

You may have to be judge, jury and executioner today. You don’t like being in the middle, but you’re just so wise! Weigh all arguments, and take a recess if you must, but don’t use that as an opportunity to run far, far away. Resign yourself to the fact that someone is going to be upset by your decision. That’s when it’s time to run far, far away.

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

You have an acute sensitivity to the aesthetics of your home, and you demand the same in your partner. A marriage to Martha Stewart won’t be happening anytime soon, although what a wonderful dream that is. There’s bound to be a guy like you out there, and today’s a good day to find him. You’ll probably want to start somewhere other than IKEA.

You may want to start a new project around the house, but your partner isn’t keen on turning the back yard into a petting zoo. And who can blame him; all those animals can leave quite a stink. Scale down your plans today, and run them by him first. Chances are he may have creative suggestions you may have overlooked.

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

You have an amazing balance in your life. On the one hand, you’re kind and supportive, on the other, you’re selfish and greedy. Which side do you think people like best? It depends which one you decide to show on any given day. Think about who you want to be today, remembering, of course, that it’s always better to give than receive.

You may want to have your head in the clouds today, but you will need to have your feet squarely on the ground. Personal issues will demand your full attention, and you will need a sharp focus to deal with them. The view sure is pretty from up there, but you won’t be able to see the small details. Take care of your business and then return to the clouds above.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

You will be indecisive today, and for once, that will be a good thing. It may keep you out of the stores, because impulse buying can be a problem for you. You might try to shop today, but you won’t be able to decide between the brands. Your partner will breathe a sigh of relief when you come home empty handed, without the ‘Facts of Life’ box set you just had to have.

You may not follow the latest decorating trends, and that could explain why your home is so 1970’s. Maybe no one told you, or you just didn’t notice, but the ferns, beanbag chair and donut phone went out with disco and the Carter Administration. Some home improvement may be needed to bring that seventies house into the twenty-first century. Get some expert advice before you start.

Bitch SESSION SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH or email bitch@davidatlanta.com

Note to self: make sure, on a first date, both of us understand each other’s idea of “eating out.”

Young gays, don’t treat every guy you think is attractive as if you’re getting together.

Hot muscle tank top daddies everywhere. Don’t save me.

I don’t go to the bar to see your vapid, shallow self. Honey, get over yourself!

I’m undressing you with my eyes…oh, no. And now I’m redressing you. 76 // 04.23.2014

Second date, we fuck. Then you say you just want to be friends. Last time I checked, friends don’t stick their dicks in each other.

It’s amazing, the things you’ll do for a person when you want to see them naked.

The higher pitched my “hey!” the greater the chance I don’t remember who you are.

Why is it some of you gays think you know it all? My business – mind your own. Seems like being a know-it-all is what you’re all about.

Not telling me something because you don’t want to piss me off is probably the best way to piss me off.

Liberal parrots….oops, I mean gays… Why is it you think what’s best for you is what’s best for all of us? Queen, go get informed and quit mimicking everything you hear! *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
